  1. Heavenly Father, you are supremely wonderful and worthy of our worship, God.

  2. It is a privilege and a joy to gather with brothers and sisters in Christ,

  3. those that are different from us culturally all across the globe, God.

  4. We've come together this morning, and we are unified in this,

  5. that we have found our life and our hope and our identity in you, God.

  6. For so many of us in this room, Christ, you have changed us and transformed us,

  7. and it's an absolute delight to fix our eyes on you, God,

  8. and to worship you and to sing your praises.

  9. We love doing that, God, and so thank you, God,

  10. for welcoming us into your throne of grace this morning, God.

  11. Father, you are God, and there is no one else like you.

  12. God, it's a privilege to remind our own souls and our own hearts and one another

  13. of your many attributes and to find our hope and our rest in you.

  14. And so we do that this morning, God.

  15. Father, thank you for your greatness and your grace.

  16. Thank you for your majesty and your mercy, God,

  17. your sovereign magnificence and your tender patience with us.

  18. God, we need you and we adore you this morning.

  19. You are Lord and King.

  20. Father, this morning we want to pray for the youth and the children at Watermark, God.

  21. We want to pray for the next generation of our church family.

  22. And Father, we bring our youth and our children before you,

  23. and we pray, Father, that at a young age their identity and their hope will be found in you, God,

  24. not in their school performance, not, God, in what society says about them or impresses upon them.

  25. Father, we pray that the next generation in our church will be so grounded and rooted in you,

  26. that their identity and their security will be in you, Father God.

  27. Father, we pray as many of them head towards exams in the coming weeks and months and with stress.

  28. Father, help us as parents in a church family to love them through it.

  29. And Father, we really do want to ask you, God, that you help us as a church

  30. to help the next generation get the gospel deeply,

  31. not just in their heads but in their hearts, God,

  32. to be formed by the good news of Jesus.

  33. Father, even this morning as our kids go off to kids' church,

  34. we pray that your Holy Spirit will be there,

  35. drawing them closer to yourself.

  36. Make the gospel clear and vivid and beautiful to them, we pray.

  37. Father, this morning we also want to pray for Chris, who's on sabbatical.

  38. We pray that you refresh him and encourage his soul, God.

  39. We pray that you speak to him wonderfully in this time.

  40. God, won't you wash him in your love and your acceptance.

  41. We pray that this sabbatical season will be profoundly good for his own soul

  42. and also for him and Fiona and little Etienne and their family.

  43. God, we pray that you will continue to speak to them, God.

  44. I pray that when he comes back early next year,

  45. he'll be so charged and ready, God, having spent amazing time with you.

  46. So we pray that this won't just be rest from work,

  47. but, God, it'll be deep soul work in his heart.

  48. Even this morning, God, wherever they are as a family,

  49. wash over them, God.

  50. Pour your love into their hearts, we pray.

  51. Father, finally we want to pray for our friends in Bangalore,

  52. Rajiv and Sarah and Coram Deo Church.

  53. Thank you, God, for bringing them to Hong Kong last week

  54. and the chance to meet them.

  55. God, we pray for that church,

  56. and we know, as they shared last week,

  57. the many challenges they're facing.

  58. So many people in this city are victims of abuse.

  59. And, God, we pray that you give them profound wisdom and insight,

  60. that they minister to their city.

  61. We pray that Coram Deo, God, will be more than just a gathering of saints.

  62. It'll be salt and light in the city of Bangalore.

  63. God, won't you encourage them and strengthen them

  64. as they go about that very important work.

  65. God, as they gather this morning for their services,

  66. we pray, Holy Spirit, fill them and flood them.

  67. Wash them with your gospel, God.

  68. Pray, encourage Rajiv and Sarah as they plant this church, Lord.

  69. And we pray for the finances of that church,

  70. that you'll bless them, that they'll be able to carry out their mission.

  71. We pray for new leaders to be raised up.

  72. God, we bring Coram Deo before you this morning

  73. and ask in your amazing grace to strengthen them and be with them.

  74. May they know that you, Christ, are head of the church.

  75. And so we stand with our brothers across Asia this morning,

  76. lift them up before your throne,

  77. and say, Father, won't you strengthen them?

  78. We pray these things in your wonderful and your very faithful name.

  79. Amen.

  80. Amen.

  81. Great. We're going to listen to the scripture reading.

  82. Annabelle's going to do that.

  83. If you are new to Watermark,

  84. we are working our way through the book of Revelation,

  85. and we are in Revelation chapter 12.

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  86. And this passage, sorry, that was my fault.

  87. This passage that Annabelle's going to read to us

  88. is a really interesting one with lots of strange imagery.

  89. We're going to try and make sense of it a little later.

  90. So if you're new, just listen up,

  91. and let's see if we can make sense of it.

  92. But go for it, Annabelle. Thank you.

  93. The scripture reading comes from Revelation chapter 12.

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  94. Please follow along in your bulletin or on the screen.

  95. And a great sign appeared in heaven.

  96. A woman clothed with the sun,

  97. with the moon under her feet,

  98. and her head a crown of twelve stars.

  99. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains

  100. and the agony of giving birth.

  101. And another sign appeared in heaven.

  102. And behold, a great red dragon,

  103. with seven heads and ten horns,

  104. and on his head seven diadems.

  105. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven

  106. and cast them to the earth.

  107. And the dragon stood before the woman

  108. who was about to give birth,

  109. so that when she bore her child,

  110. he might devour it.

  111. She gave birth to a male child,

  112. one who is to rule all the nations

  113. with a rod of iron.

  114. But her child was caught up to God

  115. and to his throne,

  116. and the woman fled into the wilderness,

  117. where she has a place prepared by God,

  118. in which she is to be nourished

  119. for 1,260 days.

  120. Now war arose in heaven.

  121. Michael and his angels

  122. fighting against the dragon,

  123. and the dragon and his angels fought back.

  124. But he was defeated,

  125. and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.

  126. And the great dragon was thrown down,

  127. that ancient serpent,

  128. who is called the devil and Satan,

  129. the deceiver of the whole world.

  130. He was thrown down to the earth.

  131. And his angels were thrown down with him.

  132. And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying,

  133. Now the salvation and the power

  134. and the kingdom of our God

  135. and the authority of his Christ have come.

  136. For the accuser of our brothers

  137. has been thrown down,

  138. who accuses them day and night before our God.

  139. And they have conquered him

  140. by the blood of the Lamb

  141. and by the word of their testimony.

  142. For they loved not their lives,

  143. even unto death.

  144. Therefore rejoice, O heavens,

  145. and you who dwell in them.

  146. But woe to you, O earth and sea,

  147. for the devil has come down to you

  148. in great wrath,

  149. because he knows that his time is short.

  150. And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth,

  151. he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.

  152. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle

  153. so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness

  154. to the place where she is to be nourished

  155. for a time and times and half a time.

  156. The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman

  157. to sweep her away with a flood.

  158. But the earth came to the help of the woman

  159. and the earth opened its mouth

  160. and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth.

  161. Then the dragon became furious with the woman

  162. and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring,

  163. on those who keep the commandments of God

  164. and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

  165. And he stood on the sand of the sea.

  166. This is the word of God.

  167. Great. Thank you, Annabelle.

  168. You read that so well with such expression.

  169. That was fantastic.

  170. Okay, just before we dive in,

  171. I've actually forgotten to say this the last few weeks.

  172. Revelation obviously is an interesting book with lots of imagery.

  173. If you have questions,

  174. let's say you think,

  175. what on earth is the dragon?

  176. Like, what does that mean anyway?

  177. Or who's the woman?

  178. Or what's up with the numbers?

  179. Please come and talk to us.

  180. You can come talk to me or any of the leaders.

  181. We'd love to answer your questions.

  182. Okay, so don't go away confused

  183. or even more confused after the sermon than you were before.

  184. Come and ask your questions.

  185. You can ask any question you want about anything in the world.

  186. And we would love to try our best to answer.

  187. Okay, so just know that.

  188. Now, as we have said many times before in the last couple of weeks,

  189. the book of Revelation is about showing us

  190. what is happening in the story of the world,

  191. particularly the story of the church,

  192. from the time of Jesus, his death and resurrection,

  193. to the time when Jesus comes back.

  194. A short way of saying that is from the cross until the throne,

  195. this period of the already,

  196. when Christ's kingdom has already come,

  197. but it's also not yet fully come.

  198. It's the story of the church,

  199. and Revelation is showing us the story

  200. from many different angles

  201. and many different perspectives.

  202. It's like in a sports game,

  203. something happens,

  204. and the referee isn't so sure if that trial was allowed

  205. or if that goal should have happened

  206. or someone committed a foul,

  207. and so he radios the referee upstairs

  208. that's watching on the TV,

  209. and they look at these different angles,

  210. and different angles show a different perspective

  211. on the same event.

  212. And that really is the book of Revelation.

  213. We're looking at it from many different angles

  214. that show us the story of the church.

  215. Now, in this passage today,

  216. we see the story of the church as a great big drama,

  217. and there are three acts or scenes in this drama,

  218. and there are three characters,

  219. and the three characters are this woman,

  220. this child that she gives birth to,

  221. and a fiery red dragon, okay?

  222. And so let's dive in and see if we can make sense of it.

  223. So act one is the coming of Jesus.

  224. So the drama starts off like this.

  225. It says in verse one,

  226. there's a great sign appeared in the heavens,

  227. and a woman is clothed with the sun and the moon

  228. and her feet and on her head is a crown,

  229. and she's pregnant.

  230. And she's crying out in birth pains

  231. at the agony of giving birth.

  232. Now, John, who wrote the book of Revelation,

  233. is drawing on a whole bunch of Old Testament passages,

  234. specifically Isaiah 26, Isaiah 66,

  235. and a whole lot of others,

  236. that picture the nation of Israel,

  237. the Old Testament people of God,

  238. as this lady who is waiting to bring forth this child,

  239. the Messiah.

  240. And for the Jewish people,

  241. whenever they heard that or read those passages,

  242. they would have thought of an earlier passage,

  243. Genesis chapter three,

  244. in which what happens is Adam and Eve sin

  245. in the Garden of Eden.

  246. They are faced with the consequences of their sin.

  247. All humanity is cursed.

  248. But in the midst of that curse,

  249. God promises them a promise of hope.

  250. And this is his promise.

  251. He says,

  252. Eve, from you are going to come a whole lot of descendants,

  253. and one of your descendants

  254. is going to be born of a woman,

  255. and he will be the savior of the world.

  256. He will crush the head of Satan.

  257. And so, for the rest of the Old Testament,

  258. the people of God,

  259. the nation of Israel,

  260. is waiting for the time

  261. when someone from the nation of Israel

  262. will give birth to this Messiah King

  263. that will save not only them,

  264. but humanity from the curse of sin.

  265. And so, Israel itself,

  266. throughout the Old Testament,

  267. is pictured as this lady

  268. waiting to give birth to the Messiah King.

  269. Okay?

  270. Does that make sense?

  271. Okay.

  272. Well, anyway, moving on.

  273. So, that's the first character.

  274. And who is this child that's born?

  275. Well, it's Jesus.

  276. Remember Matthew chapter 1?

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  277. There's this long lineage

  278. describing Jesus and his ancestry

  279. and where he comes from.

  280. And all of that is meant to point

  281. to the fact that Jesus is the one

  282. that God promised to Eve

  283. and to the nation of Israel.

  284. But then we meet this third character,

  285. and that's this evil kind of looking dragon.

  286. And he's pictured as having seven heads

  287. and crowns and horns on his head.

  288. And seven is the number of completeness.

  289. And crowns and horns and heads

  290. are pictures of sovereignty

  291. and authority and power.

  292. In other words,

  293. here is this dragon

  294. and his false claims

  295. to having absolute sovereignty

  296. and power in the world.

  297. In other words,

  298. here is this being

  299. that has set himself up

  300. as a rival to the one true God.

  301. Okay?

  302. And what is this dragon doing?

  303. Well, look at verse 4.

  304. It says,

  305. The dragon stood at the woman's feet

  306. who's about to give birth

  307. so that when she bore her child,

  308. he might devour it.

  309. He might destroy this coming child.

  310. He's bent on destroying the child

  311. that the woman is about to bear.

  312. Now, throughout the Old Testament,

  313. we see this,

  314. that God's people,

  315. the one through whom

  316. the Messiah from the world

  317. is going to come,

  318. are constantly being attacked

  319. by the forces of evil.

  320. I think of Exodus chapter 1

    Exodus 1 chapter mention

  321. where God's people,

  322. the nation of Israel,

  323. are in Egypt.

  324. They're being oppressed there.

  325. And Pharaoh issues this decree

  326. saying all male children from Israel

  327. are to be drowned in the river.

  328. They're getting too strong,

  329. too powerful.

  330. It's time just to wipe them out.

  331. And that parallels

  332. what happens later on in the Bible

  333. in Matthew chapter 2

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  334. where Herod hears that Jesus

  335. is the new king of the Jews.

  336. Remember, he hears from the wise men

  337. that come.

  338. They say,

  339. we're looking for the king of the Jews.

  340. Herod gets a fright

  341. and realizes,

  342. oh boy,

  343. my throne is being threatened.

  344. And he issues this decree.

  345. All male children

  346. under two years old in Bethlehem

  347. get slaughtered.

  348. And so throughout the Bible,

  349. God's people

  350. are constantly under attack.

  351. But what John is telling us

  352. is that behind

  353. the acts of humanity

  354. is another force.

  355. Behind the evil

  356. that's going on in the world,

  357. there is a demonic force

  358. in the spiritual realm as well.

  359. Satan is

  360. doing his best

  361. to destroy God's people

  362. and specifically

  363. to destroy the Messiah.

  364. And all of this

  365. is an attempt

  366. to destroy the promised Messiah,

  367. the one whom God promised

  368. way back in Genesis 3

  369. that this Messiah

  370. would bring about

  371. the downfall of Satan

  372. and the salvation

  373. of those who trust in him.

  374. And so this continues

  375. throughout Jesus' life.

  376. Remember,

  377. he's tempted in the wilderness.

  378. Satan comes and tempts him.

  379. And this climaxes

  380. in the cross.

  381. Jesus is nailed to the cross

  382. and finally,

  383. forces of evil

  384. think we've done away

  385. with him.

  386. But verse 5

  387. in our passage today

  388. tells us something else.

  389. It tells us

  390. that all Satan's efforts

  391. are in vain.

  392. Because just when he thinks

  393. he's about to destroy

  394. the Messiah,

  395. the one who God promised

  396. Eve would crush

  397. the head of Satan,

  398. just as he thinks

  399. he's got him,

  400. Jesus evades him

  401. and he is taken up

  402. into the throne of heaven.

  403. It's a reference

  404. to his ascension

  405. after his resurrection.

  406. Look at what it says,

  407. verse 5.

  408. She gave birth

  409. to a male child,

  410. the one who is to rule

  411. the nations

  412. with a rod of iron,

  413. but her child

  414. was caught up to God

  415. and is now

  416. before his throne.

  417. And so Act 1,

  418. verses 1 to 6,

  419. tells the story

  420. of Jesus' first coming.

  421. His promise coming,

  422. his birth,

  423. his death on the cross

  424. where Satan thinks

  425. he's about to destroy Jesus

  426. and his resurrection

  427. and his ascension

  428. up to heaven.

  429. That's the end of Act 1.

  430. Act 2,

  431. the defeat of Satan.

  432. Now look at what happens

  433. in verse 7 here.

  434. Verse 7 describes

  435. this cosmic battle

  436. that takes place

  437. in the spiritual realm,

  438. in the heavens.

  439. Now just by the way,

  440. the heavens isn't

  441. a physical place

  442. up in the sky somewhere.

  443. Okay?

  444. Someone once said,

  445. if you take a space rocket

  446. and you go far enough,

  447. you'll eventually get to heaven.

  448. I don't know where

  449. they got that from.

  450. Heaven describes

  451. the realm of God's rule and reign.

  452. It's where God rules, right?

  453. Remember, Jesus says

  454. he's going to bring heaven to earth.

  455. Jesus brings his kingdom

  456. and he's,

  457. Jesus is going to rule on earth

  458. one day.

  459. The kingdom of heaven

  460. will come to earth.

  461. And so in the spiritual realm,

  462. there's this battle.

  463. We shouldn't take it literally.

  464. There's not a wrestling ring

  465. up in the sky

  466. between Michael and Satan.

  467. It's this battle

  468. that's taking place

  469. between the armies of God

  470. and Satan.

  471. But verse five told us

  472. that Jesus eluded

  473. or escaped Satan.

  474. Verse eight tells us

  475. something else happens.

  476. Jesus doesn't just flee

  477. from Satan,

  478. he actually defeats him.

  479. Look at what verse eight says.

  480. It says there's a battle

  481. in the sky,

  482. in the heavens,

  483. but Satan was defeated.

  484. Now here's the question.

  485. How is Satan defeated?

  486. How does Jesus

  487. conquer

  488. Satan?

  489. Well, paradoxically,

  490. he does it in the very moment

  491. when Satan thinks

  492. he's conquering Jesus.

  493. He does it on the cross.

  494. As Jesus dies on the cross

  495. and rises from the cross,

  496. the very moment

  497. that Satan thought,

  498. we've done away

  499. with the Messiah,

  500. we've got him,

  501. that's actually the moment

  502. when Jesus conquers Satan.

  503. Look at what happens

  504. in verse 10.

  505. After this happens,

  506. he says,

  507. now,

  508. now is the salvation.

  509. Now has the kingdom

  510. of our God come

  511. for the accuser

  512. of our brothers

  513. has been defeated.

  514. In John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  515. Jesus,

  516. it's,

  517. I think it's the night

  518. before he is betrayed.

  519. Maybe the week before.

  520. He's about to go

  521. to the cross

  522. and he says

  523. to his disciples,

  524. he says,

  525. the hour has come

  526. for me to be glorified,

  527. which is a strange thing

  528. for Jesus to be glorified

  529. when he's put to open shame

  530. on the cross.

  531. But actually,

  532. the moment of the cross

  533. was his moment of glory.

  534. And he says

  535. to his disciples,

  536. now the Son of Man

  537. will be lifted up

  538. and I will draw

  539. all men to myself.

  540. And then he says,

  541. and the ruler

  542. of this world

  543. will be cast out.

  544. See,

  545. as Jesus is hung

  546. on the cross,

  547. as he dies

  548. and as he rises again,

  549. the forces of evil

  550. are destroyed,

  551. are crushed.

  552. Jesus' death

  553. on the cross

  554. and his resurrection

  555. from the grave

  556. was actually

  557. his decisive moment

  558. of victory

  559. over Satan,

  560. sin,

  561. and the curse of sin.

  562. Remember,

  563. Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  564. says God disarmed

  565. Satan's forces,

  566. putting them

  567. to open shame

  568. by triumphing them,

  569. triumphing over them

  570. in Christ.

  571. How did he do this?

  572. By canceling

  573. our record of death

  574. that stood against us,

  575. setting aside,

  576. nailing it

  577. to the cross.

  578. Okay,

  579. so now the question

  580. is this,

  581. how does Jesus'

  582. death on the cross,

  583. how is that his victory

  584. over forces of evil?

  585. Well,

  586. the one way

  587. is Jesus defeated

  588. death and the grave.

  589. Remember,

  590. death is the consequence

  591. of sin.

  592. Romans says that

  593. the wages,

  594. in other words,

  595. the paycheck

  596. of investing your life

  597. in sin

  598. leads to death.

  599. That's the consequences

  600. of our sinful nature.

  601. But Jesus conquered death.

  602. He conquered the grave.

  603. That's why in Corinthians,

  604. Paul mockingly says,

  605. death,

  606. where is your victory?

  607. Jesus has conquered

  608. the grave.

  609. Death,

  610. where is your sting?

  611. Your trump card

  612. that Satan thought

  613. he could pull out

  614. on followers of Jesus

  615. has been rendered powerless.

  616. It's been defeated.

  617. Jesus conquered death

  618. and conquered the grave.

  619. But that's actually

  620. not what our passage says.

  621. Our passage doesn't

  622. talk about that at all.

  623. Look at what the passage

  624. says here.

  625. How does it describe

  626. the devil?

  627. Look at verse 10,

  628. I think it is.

  629. It talks about him

  630. being the accuser

  631. of God's people.

  632. The one who accuses them

  633. night and day.

  634. Remember in the book of Job

  635. in the Old Testament,

  636. the devil is allowed

  637. to come into God's presence.

  638. And what does he say

  639. in chapter 1?

  640. He says,

  641. God,

  642. you know that servant

  643. of yours, Job.

  644. Well,

  645. Job doesn't really love you.

  646. He doesn't really serve you.

  647. He only serves you

  648. because you bless him.

  649. Satan comes before God

  650. and he brings an accusation

  651. against God's people.

  652. Okay?

  653. And that's the job

  654. of the accuser.

  655. That's what Satan does.

  656. He accuses you and I

  657. day and night.

  658. He says,

  659. he comes before us

  660. and he says,

  661. hey,

  662. sorry,

  663. he comes before God

  664. and he says,

  665. God,

  666. that guy,

  667. Jeremy,

  668. that guy,

  669. he doesn't deserve

  670. to be your child.

  671. How can you really love him?

  672. You know the things

  673. he's done this week?

  674. Do you know

  675. what's in his heart?

  676. He doesn't deserve

  677. your favor

  678. and your acceptance.

  679. Satan comes

  680. and he brings accusations.

  681. And what's God's answer

  682. to those accusations?

  683. Silence.

  684. The accusation

  685. doesn't stick.

  686. Now those things

  687. may be true.

  688. Jeremy may have had

  689. a bad week.

  690. Jeremy.

  691. Those things

  692. may be true

  693. but the accusation

  694. doesn't stick.

  695. And why doesn't it stick?

  696. Because God's people

  697. are declared righteous

  698. through the death

  699. and the resurrection

  700. of Jesus.

  701. The verdict

  702. in the courts

  703. of heaven

  704. has been given.

  705. God's people,

  706. those that trust

  707. in him

  708. and come to him

  709. in faith

  710. and repentance

  711. are declared

  712. guiltless,

  713. righteous,

  714. blameless,

  715. above reproach

  716. because our sin

  717. has been put on Jesus

  718. and Jesus' righteousness

  719. has been put on us.

  720. Our perfect standing

  721. before the God

  722. is credited to us

  723. because of Jesus.

  724. And that means

  725. that the accusations

  726. of the devil

  727. have no bearing.

  728. Now it doesn't mean

  729. they're not true.

  730. Satan comes to me

  731. and says,

  732. Kevin,

  733. you're such a lousy sinner.

  734. You're so self-centered.

  735. You're so full of pride.

  736. It's true.

  737. Those things are true

  738. of me.

  739. I'm far worse than that.

  740. Satan,

  741. if you only knew

  742. how bad I was.

  743. But the accusation

  744. doesn't stick

  745. because my righteousness

  746. doesn't depend

  747. on how good I am.

  748. It depends on

  749. what Jesus says

  750. about me.

  751. My standing before God

  752. depends on one thing only.

  753. Am I righteous

  754. in Christ?

  755. Have I come to Him

  756. and put my faith

  757. and my hope in Him?

  758. And if the answer is yes,

  759. the accusations

  760. don't stand.

  761. In 1 John chapter 2,

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  762. Jesus is described

  763. as an advocate,

  764. a barrister.

  765. Right?

  766. We've got a couple

  767. of barristers here

  768. this morning.

  769. And what happens

  770. is Satan comes

  771. before God

  772. and he accuses us.

  773. He says,

  774. God,

  775. have you seen

  776. that guy Leo?

  777. You know what he's done

  778. this week?

  779. And Jesus,

  780. our advocate,

  781. our barrister,

  782. comes before God

  783. the Father

  784. and he brings

  785. the evidence

  786. and he says,

  787. Father,

  788. look at my

  789. blood-stained hands.

  790. Look at my

  791. nail-scarred hands.

  792. The price has been paid.

  793. No guilt remains.

  794. The penalty

  795. has been dealt with.

  796. No guilt remains.

  797. Jesus,

  798. our barrister,

  799. comes

  800. and he removes

  801. the accusation.

  802. Remember the great hymn

  803. we often sing?

  804. When Satan

  805. tempts me to despair

  806. and tells me

  807. of the guilt within,

  808. what do we do?

  809. I put our look

  810. and see him there

  811. who made an end

  812. to all my sin.

  813. Friends,

  814. that's the hope

  815. of the Christian

  816. because that's the hope

  817. of the gospel.

  818. And friends,

  819. do you know what?

  820. If you're here today

  821. and you're not a follower

  822. of Jesus,

  823. you may be here

  824. and think,

  825. the message of the church

  826. is to be kind.

  827. That's not the message

  828. of the church.

  829. You may think

  830. the message of the church

  831. is to be good moral people.

  832. Now that is a good thing

  833. to do,

  834. but that's not the message

  835. of the church.

  836. That's not the message

  837. of the Bible.

  838. You may be and think,

  839. the message of the church

  840. is to tell us

  841. to love one another,

  842. to be nice to people.

  843. Now that's a good thing

  844. to do,

  845. but that's not the message

  846. of the Bible.

  847. The message of the Bible

  848. is that there is great hope

  849. in Jesus

  850. because if we come to him

  851. in faith and repentance,

  852. God has made a way

  853. for our sin

  854. to be removed from us,

  855. for us to be declared

  856. righteous in him.

  857. And all that means

  858. is that the accusations

  859. of Satan,

  860. that's how Jesus

  861. defeats Satan.

  862. He disarms

  863. his accusations.

  864. He removes

  865. his accusations

  866. from him.

  867. And that brings us

  868. to Acts chapter 3,

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  869. which is Satan's

  870. warfare on the church.

  871. Look at verse 12

  872. and onwards.

  873. In verse 12,

  874. we see that Satan

  875. has been thrown out

  876. of heaven,

  877. as it were,

  878. and in great rage,

  879. knowing not only

  880. that Jesus

  881. has evaded him,

  882. but actually defeated him,

  883. he now turns

  884. his tyranny

  885. and his anger

  886. and his rage

  887. away from Jesus

  888. towards Jesus' people

  889. here on earth.

  890. Because while Satan

  891. has been defeated,

  892. he hasn't yet

  893. been destroyed.

  894. While the death sentence

  895. has been signed,

  896. it hasn't yet

  897. been carried out.

  898. Satan's judgment

  899. has been declared,

  900. the judgment

  901. has been given,

  902. but the sentence

  903. hasn't been carried out.

  904. And so,

  905. in this interim period,

  906. Satan now wages war

  907. against,

  908. not against Jesus,

  909. he knows he's defeated him,

  910. but against Jesus' people,

  911. against the followers

  912. of Jesus.

  913. Look at verse 13.

  914. It says,

  915. When the dragon saw

  916. he had been thrown

  917. down to the earth,

  918. he pursued the woman

  919. who had previously

  920. been given birth

  921. to a male child.

  922. That's to God's people.

  923. The woman was given

  924. two wings of the great eagle

  925. so that she might fly away

  926. from the serpent

  927. into the wilderness

  928. to the place

  929. where she has been nourished

  930. for a time,

  931. times,

  932. and half the time.

  933. Verse 17.

  934. Then the dragon

  935. became furious

  936. with the woman

  937. and went off

  938. to make war

  939. on the rest

  940. of her offspring,

  941. on those who keep

  942. the commandments

  943. of God

  944. and hold

  945. to the testimony

  946. of Jesus.

  947. So,

  948. the image here is,

  949. I don't know if you've seen

  950. a movie

  951. where there's a battle

  952. going on.

  953. There's two forces,

  954. they're fighting each other,

  955. and the one team,

  956. the one army,

  957. is completely demolishing

  958. the other army.

  959. They've taken up,

  960. so let's say,

  961. I was going to say

  962. Team England,

  963. but let's just say

  964. Team A,

  965. is holding the fort,

  966. right?

  967. And they're trying

  968. to preserve

  969. this stronghold.

  970. And there's this

  971. other advancing army

  972. that is taking them down,

  973. and they're shooting

  974. off their defenders,

  975. right?

  976. Their defense.

  977. And so finally,

  978. there's one person

  979. that is defending

  980. this force.

  981. And he's been shot up,

  982. and he's bleeding profusely,

  983. and he knows

  984. that the end is done.

  985. He's the only guy left,

  986. and there's this whole army

  987. that's approaching him.

  988. And he knows

  989. he's going to die,

  990. he knows that

  991. their team has lost,

  992. the victory for the other team

  993. is any minute now,

  994. but he's still got

  995. a few bullets in his gun.

  996. And so what does he do?

  997. The dying,

  998. last gasps

  999. of a dying man,

  1000. the final kicks

  1001. of a dying man,

1002. is he's trying his best

  1003. to shoot off

1004. a few of the advancing enemy

1005. before they take him out.

  1006. Does that make sense?

  1007. You see that image?

  1008. In other words,

  1009. the victory is assured.

  1010. It's already done.

  1011. There's no way

  1012. he's going to win.

  1013. But he decides,

  1014. just before I die,

1015. let me at least see

1016. if I can take out

1017. some of the enemy forces.

  1018. That's exactly

  1019. what's going on here.

  1020. Satan has been defeated.

  1021. It's done.

  1022. There's no way

  1023. he can win.

  1024. Christ has already

  1025. died and risen.

  1026. The victory is assured.

  1027. But just before

  1028. Satan is utterly destroyed,

  1029. he's going to try

  1030. his best

  1031. to take out

  1032. a few of Christ's followers

  1033. and to destroy them

  1034. and to destroy

  1035. their faith.

  1036. Satan's been defeated,

  1037. but now he's attacking

  1038. the church

  1039. in the final,

  1040. last kicks

  1041. of a dying enemy.

  1042. But look at what

  1043. happens here.

  1044. Jesus says

  1045. in verse 14,

  1046. I think it is,

  1047. or 15,

  1048. that the woman,

  1049. God's people,

  1050. are carried away

  1051. on the great wings

  1052. of the great eagle

  1053. into the wilderness.

  1054. And it's a picture

  1055. of how the people

  1056. of God

  1057. were delivered

  1058. from Exodus

  1059. out of the tyranny

  1060. and the rage

  1061. of Pharaoh

  1062. and they were brought

  1063. by God safely

  1064. into the wilderness

  1065. and in the wilderness

  1066. God looked after them,

  1067. he protected them,

  1068. he cared for them,

  1069. he fed them,

  1070. their clothes

  1071. didn't wear out,

  1072. their shoes

  1073. didn't wear out.

  1074. God took care

  1075. of them

  1076. out of Egypt

  1077. into the wilderness

  1078. until they got

  1079. to their promised land,

  1080. until they got

  1081. to the place

  1082. of their rest.

  1083. God brought them

  1084. out of slavery

  1085. into the wilderness

  1086. and finally

  1087. into freedom.

  1088. And Jesus is saying

  1089. the same thing here,

  1090. that for the people

  1091. of God,

  1092. you've been delivered

  1093. from the tyranny

  1094. of Pharaoh,

  1095. you've been delivered

  1096. from Satan,

  1097. sure,

  1098. and now God

  1099. is delivering you,

  1100. he's taking you

  1101. into the promised land

1102. for a period of time,

  1103. not forever,

  1104. and finally he'll

  1105. take you into glory,

  1106. into your place

  1107. of rest,

  1108. the promised land,

  1109. into heaven.

1110. The story of the people

1111. of God in the Old Testament

1112. is the story of the people

1113. of God in the New Testament.

  1114. And then all this

  1115. is a reference

  1116. to Deuteronomy 32

  1117. where God says,

  1118. you saw what I

  1119. did to the Egyptians,

  1120. not what you did,

  1121. we didn't save ourselves,

  1122. not how you

  1123. saved yourselves,

  1124. you saw how I

  1125. saved you from Egypt

  1126. and I carried you

  1127. on the wings

  1128. of the eagle

  1129. and I brought you

  1130. to myself.

  1131. Friends,

  1132. this is what John

  1133. is showing us,

  1134. that yes,

  1135. Satan is alive,

  1136. yes,

  1137. Satan is real,

1138. and for those of us

  1139. who are Christians

1140. as the children of God,

1141. there is a spiritual battle,

  1142. there is an enemy

1143. you need to be aware of.

1144. He won't win in the end,

  1145. he's been disarmed,

  1146. he's been defeated,

1147. but he is still out there

  1148. to destroy your life

1149. and to destroy your faith

  1150. in Jesus.

  1151. And so we shouldn't

  1152. be apathetic,

  1153. we shouldn't be naive

  1154. or indifferent,

  1155. there is an enemy

1156. and in his final few bullets

1157. he's trying to take you out.

1158. He does want to destroy you,

1159. but at the same time

  1160. don't be alarmed.

1161. You don't need to be given

  1162. to despair

  1163. because he's a defeated foe.

  1164. Those who trust

1165. in the blood of Jesus

1166. who died on the cross,

  1167. God is rescuing us,

  1168. he's preserving us,

1169. he will carry you through

  1170. to glory.

  1171. C.S. Lewis said,

  1172. there's two mistakes

  1173. we can make.

1174. The one is we can be

  1175. overly enamored

  1176. with the devil

  1177. and think there's a devil

  1178. behind every rock,

  1179. but the other mistake

  1180. we can make

1181. is to completely ignore him

1182. and think he doesn't exist.

  1183. This is what John

  1184. is telling us.

  1185. Now,

  1186. think about what

  1187. this would have meant

  1188. to the Christians

  1189. in the first century.

  1190. The Roman Empire

  1191. is expanding and growing.

  1192. The emperor

  1193. is consolidating

  1194. more and more power

  1195. in his hands.

  1196. Christians are being seen

  1197. as a threat

  1198. because they won't acknowledge

  1199. that Caesar is Lord.

  1200. Christians won't take on

  1201. the cultural practices

  1202. of their day

1203. and so they claim allegiance

  1204. to another authority,

  1205. a higher authority

  1206. and all this meant

  1207. that the Christians

  1208. were ostracized,

  1209. they were persecuted,

  1210. they were cast out,

1211. some of them were imprisoned,

1212. some of them were even killed.

  1213. Remember at the beginning

  1214. that it says

1215. to the church in Smyrna,

  1216. it says you're slandered

  1217. by the Israelites

  1218. because you say

  1219. Jesus is Lord,

  1220. but you're also slandered

  1221. by the Romans

  1222. because you won't say

  1223. Caesar is Lord.

1224. And so for the Christians

1225. in the small town of Smyrna,

  1226. from every side,

  1227. from the religious

  1228. and the not religious,

  1229. they are being ostracized.

1230. In the church in Smyrna,

  1231. Jesus says,

1232. some of you will be

  1233. thrown into prison

  1234. and some of you

  1235. will even die.

1236. Some of you will be

  1237. thrown to the lions.

  1238. Or to the church

  1239. in Pergamon,

  1240. Jesus says,

  1241. I know you're situated

  1242. where Satan's throne is.

  1243. In other words,

  1244. you're situated in a town

  1245. where the cultal temples

  1246. are so strong,

  1247. it feels like you're

1248. in Satan's very living room.

  1249. And so here,

  1250. John shows these Christians

  1251. that behind the hostility

  1252. of Rome on earth

1253. is the hostility of Satan.

  1254. But that's not all

  1255. he shows them.

  1256. He shows them

  1257. that Satan's power

  1258. has been stripped.

  1259. That what they're experiencing

1260. now is the final kicks

  1261. of a dying enemy

  1262. because Satan

  1263. is a defeated foe.

1264. And so what are they to do?

  1265. How would John's writing,

  1266. how would Revelation

  1267. help these Christians

  1268. in the first century?

1269. What are they to do

  1270. in light of this

1271. when they go to the marketplace

1272. or they go to social settings

  1273. or their family members

1274. have turned in on them

  1275. and are ostracizing them?

1276. How is the book of Revelation,

  1277. how is this man

  1278. who helped them?

  1279. Friends,

  1280. maybe it's a good question

  1281. for us.

1282. How does this help you

  1283. and I

1284. as you go to work tomorrow,

1285. as you go to the marketplace,

  1286. as you are

  1287. maybe in social settings,

  1288. as your family

  1289. don't understand

  1290. your Christian faith?

1291. How do we live our lives

  1292. knowing that

  1293. the spiritual warfare

  1294. is real

  1295. but that Satan

  1296. who is an accuser

  1297. and a deceiver

1298. is out to destroy us

1299. but that he's been defeated?

1300. Well look at verse 11

  1301. because the answer

  1302. is given to us

  1303. in verse 11.

1304. And this is the most

  1305. important verse

  1306. of the passage.

  1307. It says this,

  1308. Friends,

  1309. to be a Christian

1310. at its most basic level

  1311. is to be someone

  1312. who lives

  1313. by simple faith

  1314. in who Jesus is

  1315. and what he's done

1316. on the cross for you.

  1317. Knowing that our lives

  1318. and our hope

  1319. are not found

1320. in the things of this world

1321. but they're found in Jesus

1322. and him who conquered the grave.

  1323. Remember when Jesus

  1324. writes his letters

  1325. to the seven churches

1326. he ends off each one

  1327. and he says

  1328. to those that conquer

  1329. I promise life

  1330. and blessing

  1331. and abundance.

1332. But how do we conquer?

  1333. How do we conquer

  1334. when Satan

  1335. is doing everything

1336. he can to conquer you?

  1337. Friends,

1338. how are you this week

1339. not going to be conquered

  1340. but to conquer him?

  1341. Well remember

  1342. when Satan

  1343. tempts me to despair

  1344. and tells me

  1345. of the guilt within

  1346. I put a look

  1347. and see him there

  1348. who made an end

  1349. to all my sin.

1350. The way that we conquer

  1351. the work of Satan

  1352. is not by looking

  1353. to ourselves

1354. but to look to the one

  1355. who truly did conquer.

  1356. Friends,

  1357. when we see

  1358. that we conquer

  1359. his accusations

  1360. by trusting

  1361. the sufficiency

  1362. of Jesus

  1363. on our behalf

  1364. Satan comes to us

  1365. and says

  1366. Kevin you're such

  1367. a lousy Christian

1368. God could never love you

  1369. you mess up

  1370. so many times

  1371. you're so self-centered

1372. God could never love you

  1373. and my answer is

  1374. it's not true.

  1375. The cross of Jesus

  1376. proves it.

  1377. Jesus loved me enough

1378. to go to the cross

  1379. for me.

  1380. I was thinking

  1381. about it yesterday

  1382. when I was

  1383. 16 years old

  1384. I was a very

  1385. insecure teenager

  1386. probably more so

  1387. than the average teenager

  1388. and remember

  1389. I was 16 years old

1390. and I was at this

  1391. youth camp

1392. I might have told you

  1393. this story before

1394. and I was just feeling

  1395. like I am a pile

  1396. of rubbish.

1397. No one could love me

1398. and if there is a God

  1399. he certainly doesn't

  1400. love me.

  1401. As I'm at this

  1402. like Christian youth camp

  1403. and there's a service

  1404. going on inside

  1405. and I walk outside

  1406. because I didn't want

  1407. to even be inside

  1408. the service

  1409. I was just feeling

  1410. so lousy

  1411. and I thought

  1412. God you could never

  1413. love me.

  1414. Anyway I'm outside

1415. and I pray this prayer

  1416. I say God

  1417. if you're real

1418. somebody needs to tell me

1419. of your love for me.

  1420. So I'm standing outside

1421. and I'm doing my own thing

  1422. and someone

1423. a guy called Steve Wimble

1424. he goes to the microphone

  1425. during worship

  1426. and he says

  1427. I just feel

  1428. there's a young man here

  1429. and God says

  1430. he loves you

1431. and he wants to be

  1432. your father

  1433. and he wants you

  1434. to be his son.

  1435. In that moment

  1436. I knew that God

  1437. loved me

  1438. but you know what

  1439. in some ways

  1440. I didn't actually need

  1441. Steve Wimble

  1442. to say that.

  1443. All I needed

  1444. was somebody

1445. to tell me the gospel.

  1446. All I needed

  1447. was somebody

  1448. to say

  1449. Kevin

  1450. Jesus loves you

  1451. enough to die

1452. on the cross for you.

  1453. You see

1454. how am I going to

  1455. defeat the accusations

  1456. of Satan

1457. when Satan comes to me

  1458. and says

  1459. Kevin

  1460. you're a pile of rubbish

1461. God could never love you

  1462. you're such a lousy Christian

1463. how am I going to

  1464. defeat

1465. how am I going to

  1466. conquer over Satan

  1467. we conquer

  1468. by faith

  1469. in the blood

  1470. of the lamb

  1471. knowing that

  1472. Jesus died

1473. on the cross for me

  1474. yes I'm a lousy Christian

  1475. I know it

  1476. but Jesus loves me

  1477. enough to go

1478. to the cross for me

  1479. and you know

  1480. sometimes Satan

  1481. will come to me

1482. and say the opposite things

  1483. sometimes you'll say

  1484. Kevin

  1485. you're an amazing Christian

  1486. God is so lucky

1487. to have you on his side

  1488. if only more people

  1489. could be like you

  1490. and Satan will come

  1491. and tell me

  1492. you're such a moral person

1493. oh God must love you

  1494. so much

  1495. and you've done

  1496. so many good things

  1497. you must really be

  1498. in his good books

1499. and how do I conquer

  1500. the lies of Satan

  1501. about what a wonderful

  1502. incredible person I am

  1503. I say Satan

  1504. the cross of Christ

  1505. proves you wrong

  1506. I'm such a sinner

1507. that Jesus had to die for me

  1508. I'm so depraved

  1509. I couldn't save myself

  1510. I needed Jesus

  1511. to die for me

1512. how am I going to conquer

  1513. the lies

  1514. and the accusations

  1515. of Satan

  1516. they're conquered

  1517. by the blood

  1518. of the lamb

  1519. by simple faith

  1520. in Jesus' death

  1521. and resurrection

  1522. and friends

1523. that's why we take communion

  1524. the way Oscar

  1525. led communion

  1526. this morning

  1527. was beautiful

  1528. the reason we come

  1529. to communion

1530. week in and week out

1531. is so that every week

  1532. we see the body

1533. of Christ broken for you

  1534. the blood of Christ

  1535. shed for you

  1536. remember Psalm 103

  1537. it says

  1538. praise the Lord

  1539. oh my soul

  1540. and forget not

  1541. all his benefits

  1542. forget not

  1543. he has removed

  1544. your sin

1545. as far as the east

  1546. is from the west

  1547. friends

  1548. when the Bible

  1549. says forget

  1550. it's not like

  1551. we've forgotten

  1552. where our keys are

1553. or our cell phone is

  1554. when the Bible

  1555. uses the word forget

  1556. it talks about

  1557. not being

  1558. the truth

  1559. of the scripture

  1560. not being vivid

  1561. in our consciousness

  1562. the Bible says

  1563. remember the gospel

  1564. it's not because

  1565. we've forgotten it

  1566. it's because

  1567. it's no longer

  1568. vivid in our consciousness

  1569. how are we going

  1570. to conquer Satan

  1571. it's by having

  1572. the gospel

  1573. the fact that

  1574. Jesus died

1575. the blood of the lamb

1576. has been shed for us

  1577. vivid

  1578. in our consciousness

1579. let me see where I am

  1580. friends this is what

  1581. the life of faith

  1582. is all about

  1583. a Christian is someone

  1584. not just who knows

1585. the gospel in their head

  1586. it's someone who

  1587. lives by faith

  1588. in the goodness

  1589. and the sufficiency

  1590. of Jesus

  1591. and his death

  1592. on the cross

  1593. and that's the way

  1594. we conquer the schemes

  1595. of the evil one

  1596. but

  1597. last thing

  1598. that's not all

  1599. because look at what

  1600. else verse 11 says

  1601. it says

  1602. they conquered him

1603. by the blood of the lamb

  1604. by faith in what

1605. Jesus did on the cross

1606. but also by the word

  1607. of their testimony

  1608. even to the point

  1609. of death

1610. now what does that mean

  1611. it means that

  1612. the Christians

  1613. conquered the schemes

  1614. of the devil

  1615. by knowing that

  1616. this world was no

  1617. longer their home

  1618. and that the things

  1619. of this world

1620. no longer had a pull

  1621. on them

  1622. the desires and the

  1623. allures of this world

  1624. no longer seduced them

  1625. because they've been

  1626. so captured by the

  1627. beauty and the wonder

  1628. of Jesus

1629. and the hope of the

  1630. gospel

  1631. that's how you conquer

  1632. the schemes of the

  1633. evil one

1634. and so in this day and

  1635. age

  1636. the Romans would come

  1637. and say

  1638. hey you want to

  1639. preserve your life

  1640. just deny Jesus

  1641. and the beauty of

  1642. Jesus was so real

  1643. to them

  1644. that the word of

  1645. the testimony

  1646. they'd say

  1647. no Christ is Lord

  1648. not Caesar

  1649. even to the point

  1650. of death

  1651. the things of this

  1652. world no longer

1653. had a hold on them

  1654. Christ so long

  1655. so had a hold

  1656. on their hearts

  1657. that they were

  1658. even in the face

  1659. of death

  1660. were able to stand

  1661. firm and say

  1662. Christ is Lord

  1663. that's how they

  1664. conquered the evil

  1665. one

  1666. friends this week

  1667. you can be sure

  1668. that the deceiver

  1669. the accuser

  1670. is going to try

  1671. his absolute best

  1672. to destroy your

  1673. faith

  1674. and to

  1675. rid you of

  1676. following Jesus

1677. he's going to do it

  1678. through accusation

  1679. and deceit

1680. he's going to do it

  1681. through

  1682. lies

1683. he's going to do it

  1684. maybe through

  1685. tempting you

  1686. with comfort

  1687. and ease

  1688. that you start

  1689. to love

  1690. and hope

  1691. the things

  1692. of this world

  1693. how are we

  1694. going to overcome

  1695. him

  1696. friends the way

  1697. to overcome

  1698. him

  1699. is not by

  1700. looking to

  1701. ourselves

  1702. it's by

  1703. turning our

  1704. eyes

  1705. to the

  1706. wonder of

  1707. Jesus

  1708. friends this

  1709. week you

  1710. and you

  1711. at work

  1712. the way

  1713. to overcome

  1714. the evil

  1715. one

  1716. is not by

  1717. going to your

  1718. boss's door

  1719. before he arrives

  1720. at work

  1721. and anointing it

  1722. with holy oil

  1723. from the holy

  1724. land

  1725. right

  1726. that's not how

  1727. you're going to

  1728. defeat the evil

  1729. one

  1730. the way you're

  1731. going to do

  1732. it is by

  1733. having your

  1734. eyes of your

  1735. heart so

  1736. captured by

  1737. the beauty

  1738. of Jesus

  1739. that even

  1740. in the face

  1741. of opposition

  1742. in your

  1743. heart of hearts

  1744. you can say

  1745. Christ is Lord

  1746. even to the

  1747. point of death

  1748. that's conquering

  1749. by the word

  1750. of the testimony

  1751. to the point

  1752. of death

  1753. friends this

  1754. week Satan

  1755. is going to

  1756. try his absolute

  1757. best to destroy

  1758. your faith

  1759. to ruin your

  1760. life causing

  1761. people to turn

  1762. against you

  1763. causing people

  1764. to slander you

  1765. and talk badly

  1766. about you

  1767. causing people

  1768. to stab you

  1769. in the back

  1770. are you going

  1771. to get defensive

  1772. are you going

  1773. to fight back

  1774. are you going

  1775. to preserve

  1776. your life

  1777. by slandering

  1778. them back

  1779. or stabbing

  1780. them in the

  1781. back

  1782. is it in a

  1783. dog eat

  1784. world

  1785. dog eat

  1786. dog world

  1787. the one who

  1788. gets the top

  1789. is that how

  1790. you're going

  1791. to win

  1792. friends the

  1793. way you're

  1794. going to

  1795. conquer the

  1796. schemes of

  1797. the evil

  1798. one

  1799. it's not

  1800. looking to

  1801. yourself

  1802. not trying

  1803. to save

  1804. yourself

  1805. it's by

  1806. seeing in

  1807. your hearts

  1808. the beauty

  1809. and the

  1810. wonder

  1811. and the

  1812. faithfulness

  1813. and the

  1814. trustworthiness

  1815. and the

  1816. majesty of

  1817. Jesus

  1818. it's been

  1819. more enamored

  1820. and captured

  1821. by who

  1822. Christ is

  1823. in the

  1824. things of

  1825. this world

  1826. and that

  1827. way that's

  1828. how we

  1829. conquer the

  1830. word of

  1831. our testimony

  1832. even to

  1833. the point

  1834. of death

  1835. friends this

  1836. week the

  1837. deceiver and

  1838. the accuser

  1839. is going to

  1840. try and

  1841. destroy your

  1842. faith by

  1843. bringing

  1844. something beautiful

  1845. in your life

  1846. maybe some

  1847. romantic relationship

  1848. maybe the most

  1849. beautiful person

  1850. you've ever seen

  1851. is going to

  1852. come waltz into

  1853. your life

  1854. and you're

  1855. going to

  1856. think my

  1857. savior has

  1858. come this

  1859. person is

  1860. going to

  1861. make my

  1862. life worthwhile

  1863. and romantic

  1864. relationships are

  1865. good but they

  1866. are not your

  1867. savior they will

  1868. not save you

  1869. friends how

  1870. you're going to

  1871. overcome sin

  1872. this week

  1873. you won't do

  1874. it by promising

  1875. to be a good

  1876. Christian

  1877. you won't do

  1878. it by looking

  1879. at the Bible

  1880. and saying how

  1881. much can I

  1882. get away

  1883. with what

  1884. am I allowed

  1885. to do and

  1886. what am I

  1887. not allowed

  1888. to do

  1889. friends the

  1890. way we're

  1891. going to

  1892. conquer the

  1893. schemes of

  1894. the devil

  1895. is by

  1896. seeing with

  1897. the eyes of

  1898. our hearts

  1899. that Jesus

  1900. is more

  1901. satisfying than

  1902. any sexual

  1903. experience

  1904. Jesus is more

  1905. beautiful and

  1906. glorious than

  1907. any intimate

  1908. relationship

  1909. that Jesus

  1910. the one who

  1911. died on the

  1912. cross and gave

  1913. himself for

  1914. you loves

  1915. you supremely

  1916. to the world

  1917. and back

  1918. friends that's

  1919. the way you

  1920. conquer sin

  1921. by saying yes

  1922. to the beauty

  1923. of Jesus

  1924. that's conquering

  1925. with the word

  1926. of our testimony

  1927. even to the

  1928. point of death

  1929. in other words

  1930. the way we

  1931. overcome Satan

  1932. is being willing

  1933. to die to

  1934. ourselves because

  1935. we've seen how

  1936. wonderful Christ

  1937. is how glorious

  1938. and faithful and

  1939. majestic and

  1940. beautiful and

  1941. reliable he is

  1942. as we come to

  1943. a close do you

  1944. remember John

  1945. Newton he

  1946. wrote that

  1947. famous hymn

  1948. amazing grace

  1949. amazing grace

  1950. how sweet the

  1951. sound that

  1952. saved a wretch

  1953. like me I

  1954. once was lost

  1955. but now I'm

  1956. found was blind

  1957. but now I see

  1958. do you remember

  1959. that hymn the

  1960. final stanza is

  1961. amazing it says

  1962. this through many

  1963. dangers toils and

  1964. snares we have

  1965. already come but

  1966. it was grace that

  1967. has brought us

  1968. safe thus far and

  1969. it's grace that

  1970. will lead us

  1971. home friends many

  1972. believers think

  1973. that the way you

  1974. become a Christian

  1975. is by trusting

  1976. Jesus and then

  1977. the way you get

  1978. to glory is by

  1979. self-effort and

  1980. determination and

  1981. just by making

  1982. sure that you

  1983. don't mess up

  1984. but John Newton

  1985. is right the

  1986. grace that has

  1987. saved us thus far

  1988. is the grace that

  1989. will get us home

  1990. the way you become

  1991. a Christian is

  1992. fixing your eyes

  1993. on Jesus and

  1994. putting your hope

  1995. in him who died

  1996. on the cross

  1997. but the way that

  1998. you get to glory

  1999. and the way that

  2000. you conquer the

  2001. schemes of the

  2002. evil one is the

  2003. exact same way

  2004. by fixing our

  2005. eyes on Jesus

  2006. the one who

  2007. died on the

  2008. cross for us

  2009. friends traditional

  2010. religion will tell

  2011. you be more

  2012. disciplined be more

  2013. dedicated be more

  2014. moral go to more

  2015. church events do

  2016. more stuff

  2017. contemporary self-help

  2018. will say blow that

  2019. stuff look to

  2020. yourself just you be

  2021. free throw for the

  2022. shackles of other

  2023. people's expectations

  2024. do whatever you want

  2025. friends Jesus says

2026. look to me look to

  2027. me they conquered

2028. by the blood of the

  2029. lamb by faith in

  2030. Jesus and what he

2031. did and by the word

  2032. of their testimony

  2033. friends you see what

  2034. this passage is

  2035. telling us that

  2036. followers of Jesus

  2037. conquer the evil

  2038. one by simple faith

  2039. in the one who

  2040. conquered him on the

  2041. cross the grace that

  2042. saved us is the

  2043. grace that has

  2044. brought us thus far

  2045. that same grace will

  2046. lead us home they

  2047. conquered him by

  2048. their faith in the

  2049. blood of the lamb

  2050. and the word of

  2051. their testimony let's

  2052. come to him now

2053. maybe I can ask you

  2054. to stand if you

  2055. let's stand together

  2056. and pray

  2057. oh sovereign God

  2058. loving father

  2059. wonderful Christ

  2060. beautiful spirit

  2061. Trinitarian God we

  2062. come before you this

  2063. morning and

2064. God our hope is in

  2065. you God for those

  2066. of us this morning

  2067. that have been

  2068. overcome by the

  2069. things of this world

  2070. either seduced by the

  2071. pleasure of this world

  2072. or been overcome by

  2073. the accusations of

  2074. Satan those of us

  2075. God that have

  2076. believed the lies

  2077. and the deceit of

  2078. Satan we pray God

  2079. that you'll help us

2080. to fix our eyes on

  2081. you God we don't

  2082. we know these things

  2083. in our head but

  2084. Christ we need you

2085. to open the eyes of

  2086. our hearts to see

  2087. your majesty and your

  2088. beauty Jesus more

  2089. than just a sermon

2090. and more than just a

  2091. Bible study Jesus we

2092. need you to come by

  2093. the power of your

  2094. spirit to come and

  2095. breathe fresh life into

  2096. our hearts and souls

2097. God and to fix our

2098. eyes on you God I

2099. pray for each one of

  2100. us here this morning

2101. that really we will be

  2102. those who live our

  2103. lives by simple faith

2104. in the blood of the

2105. lamb that God just as

  2106. your people were saved

  2107. from Egypt by the

2108. blood of the lamb so

2109. we too are saved and

  2110. redeemed and brought to

  2111. glory brought to our

  2112. promised land by our

2113. faith in the blood of

  2114. Jesus Christ we do

2115. pray that you will come

  2116. and apply this message

2117. to our hearts God come

2118. and lead us I pray this

  2119. week God that as

  2120. Satan does try to

  2121. destroy our faith and

2122. take our eyes off of

2123. you that God you will

2124. by your grace and by

2125. your spirit God lead us

2126. back to your throne of

2127. grace and help us to

2128. fix our eyes on you

2129. help us be those that

  2130. conquer by our simple

2131. faith in the blood of the

2132. lamb and the word of our

  2133. testimony we pray these

  2134. things in your wonderful

  2135. and your powerful name

  2136. amen
