  78. Thank you.

  79. Thank you.

  80. Thank you.

  81. Though the storms may rage, He is strong to save. He's the King forever, Jesus.

  82. When I plead His case, I will sing my praise to the King forever, Jesus.

  83. All my sorrows past, I am home at last with my King forever, Jesus.

  84. With my King forever, Jesus.

  85. With my King forever, Jesus.

  86. So as we've joined our voices in praise, let's now unite our hearts in prayer. Let us pray.

  87. Our Father in Heaven, we thank You that we have much cause to give You praise and to give You thanks.

  88. We thank You that You are great and good. We thank You that You are mighty and powerful.

  89. We thank You that You look upon us with grace and favor.

  90. We ask that You would guide us tonight as we read Your Word, as we consider its truth.

  91. We ask that You would remind us that as Your people, we have great and precious privileges.

  92. We have this open access to Your throne of grace.

  93. We are Your witnesses, Your ambassadors.

  94. We are those that represent You here on earth.

  95. So help us, Lord, to represent You well with our character, with our words, with our actions.

  96. We pray that we would be signposts like John the Baptist.

  97. Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  98. We thank You that You have placed us here in this church, in this community, in this city.

  99. We thank You that there are many people in this city who call upon Your name.

  100. And we thank You that You do not leave Yourself without a witness.

  101. We pray that You would strengthen Your work, Your church here in Edinburgh.

  102. And we thank You that there are many pulpits from which the good news of Jesus sounds forth.

  103. So we pray that You would strengthen that work and that You would extend that work.

  104. That there would be many churches that would soon be planted.

  105. And many new people who would come in contact with the gospel.

  106. We pray for the work of chaplaincy, whether in prisons or in hospitals, in schools, in the armed forces.

  107. We thank You that You place Your people in these key strategic places.

  108. We thank You for organizations like Gideon's who give away thousands of thousands of copies of Your word.

  109. And who supply schools and prisons and the armed forces with copies of the scriptures.

  110. And we thank You that there are many of Your people who have come to faith through the reading of Your word.

  111. And through the circumstances that place them in difficult settings.

  112. Heavenly Father, we pray that You would bless Your word now as we read it.

  113. That You would speak to our hearts.

  114. That You would encourage us.

  115. That You would strengthen us.

  116. That You would correct us.

  117. That You would renew us and restore us.

  118. Lord, You know each of one of our stories.

  119. You know each of our circumstances.

  120. You know the burdens that weigh us down.

  121. You know the joys that bring us smiles.

  122. You know the hope that leads us forward.

  123. And You know at times that sense of sadness or sorrow or despair that can so easily entangle us and bring us down.

  124. So Lord, whatever is needed, we pray that You would amply provide.

  125. And now as we turn to Your word, we thank You that the Holy Spirit promises to accompany the reading of Your word with Your power.

  126. With Your presence.

  127. And You tell us that Your word can never go out and return to You without effect.

  128. So we commit ourselves to You this evening.

  129. In the name of Jesus.

  130. Amen.

  131. Well there are two passages I'm going to read to us.

  132. The first comes from Exodus chapter 19.

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  133. And the second from Leviticus.

  134. Again in my prison work I try to explain the Bible to people.

  135. And to say most of the books of the Bible either have the name is where it was written to or who wrote it.

  136. Of course that doesn't hold for books like Exodus and Leviticus or Numbers.

  137. But you know you quickly get corrected if you say something that is not completely true.

  138. Exodus chapter 19 verses 1 down to 8.

    Exodus 19:1

  139. In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt.

  140. On the very day they came to the desert of Sinai.

  141. And after they set out from Rephidim.

  142. They entered the desert of Sinai.

  143. And Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.

  144. Then Moses went up to God.

  145. And the Lord called to him from the mountain and said.

  146. This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob.

  147. And what you are to tell the people of Israel.

  148. You yourselves have seen what I did in Egypt.

  149. And how I carried you on eagle's wings and brought you to myself.

  150. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant.

  151. Then out of all the nations you will be my treasured possession.

  152. Although the whole earth is mine.

  153. You will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

  154. These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.

  155. So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people.

  156. And set before them all the words that the Lord had commanded him to speak.

  157. The people responded together.

  158. We will do everything the Lord has said.

  159. So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.

  160. And if you move forward a few pages.

  161. We'll pick up in Leviticus chapter 19.

    Leviticus 19 chapter mention

  162. Leviticus 19 and we'll read from verses 1 down to 18.

  163. The heading is various laws and Leviticus means the law or laws.

  164. The Lord said to Moses speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them.

  165. Be holy because I the Lord your God am holy.

  166. Each of you must respect his mother and father.

  167. And you must observe my Sabbath.

  168. My Sabbaths I am the Lord your God.

  169. Do not turn to idols or make gods of cast metal for yourselves.

  170. I am the Lord your God.

  171. When you sacrifice a fellowship offering to the Lord.

  172. Sacrifice it in such a way that it will be accepted on your behalf.

  173. It shall be eaten on the day you sacrifice it or on the next day.

  174. Anything left over until the third day must be burned up.

  175. If any of it is eaten on the third day it is impure and will not be accepted.

  176. Whoever eats it will be held responsible because he has desecrated what is holy to the Lord.

  177. That person must be cut off from his people.

  178. When you reap the harvest of your land.

  179. Do not reap to the very edges of your field.

  180. Or gather the gleanings of your harvest.

  181. Do not go over your vineyard a second time.

  182. Or pick up the grapes that have fallen.

  183. Leave them for the poor and the alien.

  184. I am the Lord your God.

  185. Do not steal.

  186. Do not lie.

  187. Do not deceive one another.

  188. Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God.

  189. I am the Lord.

  190. Do not defraud your neighbor or rob him.

  191. Do not hold back the wages of a hired man overnight.

  192. Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind.

  193. But fear your God.

  194. I am the Lord.

  195. Do not pervert justice.

  196. Do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great.

  197. But judge your neighbor fairly.

  198. Do not go about spreading slander among your people.

  199. Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor's life.

  200. I am the Lord.

  201. Do not hate your brother in your heart.

  202. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so that you will not share in his guilt.

  203. Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people.

  204. But love your neighbor as yourself.

  205. I am the Lord.

  206. Amen.

  207. And may God add his blessing to these readings from his own word.

  208. Let's pray together before we turn back.

  209. Father God, we do again thank you for your word.

  210. We ask once again that you would speak to us from it.

  211. That you enable us to hear and to store up in our heart.

  212. And to put into practice those things that you have for us.

  213. Amen.

  214. So we are continuing to think about the mission of God's people.

  215. Thinking about this reality, as we mentioned at the beginning, that we are called to represent God to the world.

  216. Often when we hear the word represent, representation, maybe we think in terms of the privileges that that involves.

  217. In certain cases, in certain cases, other times responsibility.

  218. For those of us who were paying attention to football yesterday, World Cup qualifying was on again.

  219. And you'll notice whenever somebody is called up to represent their national team for the very first time.

  220. They'll always, without fail, talk about the honor that they have in representing their country.

  221. Of course, that also brings with it a certain measure of responsibility.

  222. And Scottish players have that responsibility to make sure it's not another 20 years before we have a major championship.

  223. So there's privilege, there's responsibility.

  224. Closer to home, perhaps we have been asked to represent our school, our university, or our company in some way or another.

  225. Giving a talk, perhaps.

  226. Launching a new product.

  227. And there, while there is privilege, perhaps the emphasis there falls on responsibility.

  228. For that time, you become the face of your school or your business and industry.

  229. So these are the ideas that we're going to focus on together.

  230. That sense of the privilege of being chosen by God's grace.

  231. We've seen that week after week as we've been in Genesis and Exodus.

  232. But also the responsibility.

  233. The responsibility to represent God well in the world for His glory and on His mission.

  234. So again, as with our usual pattern tonight, we'll look at the Old Testament to see this theme.

  235. In our community groups and student and young workers group, we'll look at the New Testament.

  236. So we'll turn first of all to Exodus 19.

  237. Where we'll see privileges and responsibilities as the people are called into covenant with their God.

  238. So we're told at the beginning, the setting.

  239. So this is the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt.

  240. So three months ago, they were enslaved.

  241. But now, by God's grace, by God's power, they've been set free.

  242. And they're meeting God at Mount Sinai.

  243. They're about to get the Ten Commandments.

  244. This covenant relationship is about to be established where God will say to them,

  245. You will be my people and I will be your God.

  246. It's a covenant of grace, as we've seen all the way through for the last few weeks.

  247. And that's crucial to understanding the place of the law for the people.

  248. It's crucial to understand how they are to live in the promised land and for their mission.

  249. Exodus 19 is crucial for the people of God in helping them to understand,

  250. And indeed, by extension, helping us to understand who are we?

  251. And what are we here for as God's church?

  252. And this chapter helps us to do that by looking at these privileges and responsibilities within the covenant.

  253. So let's begin thinking about the privilege.

  254. Verse 3,

  255. So Jacob, Israel, here are reminders for them that God has already spoken promises to their forefathers.

  256. This is recalling for us that original promise made in Genesis 12 that then gets passed down the generations.

  257. And it's a reminder that God has been faithful to his promises and will continue to be faithful when it comes to the covenant.

  258. And then in verse 4,

  259. Again, the privilege of God working for his people and working for his intended goal.

  260. Why does he set them free?

  261. Why does he bring salvation?

  262. That they might know God.

  263. That they might enjoy relationship and life with God.

  264. That's always the goal of salvation, to know and enjoy our God.

  265. The privilege continues in verse 5, the second part.

  266. If you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.

  267. Boys and girls, when we think of treasure, probably we think something like pirate gold.

  268. Might be our first connection.

  269. Perhaps if you've read The Hobbit, you'll think of Gollum and my precious.

  270. But it can be anything that we have and hold on to dearly.

  271. And what God is saying to the people here is that God has a special Father's love for his church.

  272. He looks at his people and considers them to be precious, treasured in his sight.

  273. Who are we as the people of God?

  274. Exodus 19 says we are a people who've been saved by grace.

  275. We are a people who've been saved by God's power.

  276. The New Testament reminds us we've been saved at great cost.

  277. The cost of the blood of the Lord Jesus.

  278. Saved from slavery to enjoy freedom.

  279. For us, again, that's slavery to sin leading to death.

  280. Freedom to know forgiveness and life with God.

  281. And who are we as the people of God?

  282. We are precious to him.

  283. We are loved by him.

  284. And as Christians and as the church, we need to feel that sense of privilege.

  285. That amazing grace, as it were, would be the song of our heart.

  286. Amazing grace.

  287. How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.

  288. That we understand how desperate our situation was because of sin.

  289. And to understand God's grace in saving us and opening blind eyes.

  290. We need to feel it.

  291. We also need to believe it.

  292. We need to be telling ourselves the truth of the gospel.

  293. We need to learn to listen to the right voice.

  294. Because we have in the devil an accuser.

  295. Who would be very glad to pull away any sense of security and joy we might have

  296. from knowing God by pointing to our sin and taking our eyes off our Savior.

  297. We need to let the privilege of the gospel shape our identity.

  298. Individually as Christians and together as a church.

  299. That our unity comes from being united to the Lord Jesus.

  300. Our whole Christian life then is to be built on this.

  301. To recognize it is an honor to represent our Savior God.

  302. So, so much for privilege.

  303. What does Exodus 19 tell us about responsibilities for the people of God?

  304. Verse 5 speaks of responsibility.

  305. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant,

  306. then out of all nations you'll be my treasured possession.

  307. God has acted in saving grace.

  308. The people, God's people, are to respond with obedience.

  309. We've said it before, but the order is vital.

  310. In chapter 19 we have,

  311. You have been saved by grace, therefore obey.

  312. Ten commandments begins with that reminder of rescue, redemption from Egypt,

  313. therefore obey.

  314. The law was, never, is, never, will, never be

  315. God's way for people to be right with Him.

  316. Rather, the law as it gives us God's perfect standards

  317. show just how far short we fall of that and how much we need a Savior.

  318. We need the saving work of God first.

  319. Because when that happens,

  320. we're given a new heart.

  321. We're given a new will to obey.

  322. And we're given the Spirit,

  323. so we have a new power to help us to obey.

  324. So we don't use the law as a way to earn God's favor,

  325. to earn God's salvation.

  326. Following this, in verse 6,

  327. there are two pictures of God's people,

  328. two ways to think about the reality,

  329. how do we represent God,

  330. and they're very much connected.

  331. First of all,

  332. in verse 6,

  333. there's the idea of being a kingdom of priests.

  334. Although the whole earth is mine,

  335. you will be for me a kingdom of priests.

  336. Now, to help us to understand that,

  337. we need to think about,

  338. well, what did a priest do

  339. that God is then saying to the people of God collectively,

  340. we are then to do?

  341. Well, we know that one of the key jobs of a priest

  342. was to teach the law.

  343. The law of God was brought to the people.

  344. And we also know that the priests

  345. had the responsibility to offer sacrifices,

  346. offer the right sacrifices,

  347. so that the people's sin could be atoned for,

  348. it could be forgiven,

  349. it could be cleansed.

  350. And the priests also had a responsibility

  351. to speak God's blessing over God's people.

  352. Ed Welch has written a whole book,

  353. little book on this topic called

  354. Created to Draw Near,

  355. what it means for the church to be royal priests.

  356. And in that book,

  357. he emphasizes holiness

  358. for the sake of relationship.

  359. God calls us to be holy

  360. so that we might be near to our holy God

  361. and that we might serve our holy God

  362. because we are in a living fellowship,

  363. relationship of love with him.

  364. When we think about the task

  365. of representing our school

  366. or representing our job,

  367. we are saying, you know,

  368. these are our values.

  369. This is the product.

  370. These are the skills we offer.

  371. What are we saying as we represent God

  372. as a kingdom of priests?

  373. What's the mission of God's people?

  374. We're saying we represent not ourselves,

  375. we represent the one true and living God.

  376. And we are saying these are his ways

  377. in the way that we live,

  378. in our obedience,

  379. in our ethics.

  380. And we'll think about that in a few moments.

  381. And as we say,

  382. this is the way to be right with him

  383. as we speak of Jesus

  384. and salvation

  385. through his work on the cross.

  386. We are to be that kingdom of priests

  387. representing our holy God.

  388. And for the nation of Israel to do that,

  389. for the church today to do that,

  390. what must we be?

  391. And the answer is there in verse six.

  392. We must be holy.

  393. You will be for me a kingdom of priests

  394. and a holy nation.

  395. And again, it's important for us to recognize here

  396. that the whole nation is in view.

  397. Their shared life together

  398. is what is being referenced here.

  399. God understands

  400. and wants the people to understand

  401. from the beginning

  402. the power of Christian community

  403. to make God's truth

  404. and to make worship

  405. credible and attractive.

  406. that our shared life

  407. and worship

  408. is to draw attention

  409. to our God.

  410. I was thinking about this

  411. in terms of

  412. baptizing people.

  413. Like over the years,

  414. thinking about people

  415. who've come for baptism.

  416. People from very different countries,

  417. very different backgrounds often.

  418. But one common feature

  419. of their stories,

  420. especially if they didn't have

  421. any Christian background at all,

  422. was coming around a church

  423. or coming around a group

  424. of Christian friends

  425. and receiving a welcome

  426. and seeing a different kind of love

  427. in operation

  428. and enjoying hospitality

  429. from people who were strangers

  430. just moments before.

  431. And all of those things

  432. serving to give that sense of intrigue

  433. and a compelling quality

  434. then to the Bible

  435. that we read and spoke about,

  436. the Jesus that we spoke of as Savior.

  437. There is something compelling

  438. about the shared life of God's people

  439. when we live God's way.

  440. And so he calls on his people

  441. to be a holy nation.

  442. Now recognize

  443. that that in one case

  444. is a fact.

  445. You will be a holy nation.

  446. New Testament letters

  447. speak of Christians

  448. as being saints,

  449. not something that happens

  450. when we die

  451. and we go up to heaven.

  452. Saints today set apart

  453. from the world

  454. to belong to God

  455. in our relationship

  456. of love and response.

  457. That's fact.

  458. That's who we are

  459. as Christians.

  460. It's fundamental

  461. to our identity,

  462. but it's also,

  463. at one and the same time,

  464. our mission.

  465. We're called to live out

  466. who we truly are.

  467. In a sense,

  468. verse 8 is the ideal.

  469. Moses went back

  470. and summoned the elders

  471. of the people

  472. and set before them

  473. all the words

  474. the Lord had commanded

  475. and the people responded,

  476. we will do everything

  477. the Lord has said.

  478. That's the ideal.

  479. We know that Israel

  480. falls short.

  481. We know that we fall short,

  482. but the ideal is that

  483. we seek to live

  484. in joyful obedience

  485. so that others might see

  486. something of God

  487. in us,

  488. something of Christ

  489. in us.

  490. So when it comes

  491. to representing God,

  492. we have this wonderful privilege,

  493. but we also have responsibilities.

  494. Now,

  495. perhaps we're asking the question,

  496. well,

  497. what does it look like

  498. to be a holy nation?

  499. We might understand that

  500. as concept,

  501. but how do we see it

  502. on the ground?

  503. That's why we need

  504. to turn to Leviticus 19.

  505. So turn with me

  506. in your Bible

  507. or your device

  508. to Leviticus 19,

  509. and let's see

  510. very briefly

  511. what representing God

  512. in all of life

  513. looks like

  514. according to this chapter.

  515. It's a wonderful chapter

  516. and we read half of it,

  517. Bob read for us,

  518. half of it

  519. and it's a wonderful chapter

  520. because it's so remarkably diverse

  521. in its laws

  522. and we'll think about that

  523. in a moment,

  524. but it's governed

  525. by one great reality

  526. which is there in verse 1.

  527. Speak to the entire assembly

  528. of Israel

  529. and say to them,

  530. Be holy

  531. because I,

  532. the Lord your God,

  533. am holy.

  534. And that's then repeated

  535. in shorthand

  536. and perhaps as you read

  537. you noticed

  538. the number of times

  539. the verse would end,

  540. I am the Lord your God.

  541. See it there in verse 3,

  542. each of you must respect

  543. your mother and father,

  544. you must observe my Sabbaths,

  545. I am the Lord your God.

  546. But then you can go

  547. to verse 4,

  548. verse 10,

  549. verse 12,

  550. verse 14,

  551. it's all the way through.

  552. What's the point?

  553. God is saying,

  554. keep these laws,

  555. do these things

  556. to reflect me.

  557. He's saying to his people,

  558. let my holiness

  559. shape your,

  560. our whole of life,

  561. holiness.

  562. How can we go wrong

  563. when we think about

  564. the idea of holiness?

  565. holiness?

  566. Two ways I think

  567. we can easily go wrong

  568. is we can think holiness

  569. is for special Christians,

  570. some kind of special category,

  571. but not for a,

  572. might be for a monk,

  573. or it might be for a minister,

  574. but not me.

  575. You might be tempted

  576. to think that.

  577. Holiness is for special people.

  578. Or we might think holiness

  579. is for special occasions.

  580. Well,

  581. we know Sunday

  582. is the Lord's day,

  583. that's a holy day,

  584. but maybe sometimes

  585. we struggle to think,

  586. well,

  587. how does that holiness

  588. work through Monday to Friday?

  589. How does it work

  590. through my nine to five

  591. or life at school

  592. or university

  593. or in the family?

  594. How does holiness

  595. apply there?

  596. That's why Leviticus 19

  597. is so important,

  598. because as we look

  599. at the details

  600. very briefly,

  601. we're going to notice

  602. that holiness

  603. isn't just for some people,

  604. for a special category,

  605. it's for every one

  606. of God's people.

  607. Holiness is for every Christian,

  608. and holiness

  609. isn't just for Sunday.

  610. Holiness is for all of life.

  611. As Chris Wright

  612. puts it in his book,

  613. Old Testament Ethics

  614. for the People of God,

  615. holiness is thoroughly practical,

  616. social,

  617. and very down to earth.

  618. Holiness was a community ethic

  619. with a wide range

  620. of implications.

  621. So what we're going to do

  622. is we're going to

  623. very briefly survey

  624. just how wide

  625. this idea of holiness

  626. goes in this chapter.

  627. So let's think about

  628. how these various laws,

  629. and these aren't all the laws

  630. by any stretch,

  631. but these are various laws,

  632. how do they impact

  633. on society

  634. in the first place?

  635. We could go to verse 11.

  636. Do not steal,

  637. do not lie,

  638. do not deceive

  639. one another.

  640. There is to be

  641. truth-telling

  642. within the community.

  643. Verse 14,

  644. do not curse the deaf,

  645. or put a stumbling block

  646. in front of the blind,

  647. but fear your God.

  648. There is to be

  649. care and compassion

  650. for those with disabilities.

  651. Verse 17,

  652. do not hate

  653. a fellow Israelite

  654. in your heart.

  655. Rebuke your neighbor

  656. frankly,

  657. so that you will not

  658. share in their guilt.

  659. There is to be

  660. love within the community,

  661. a love that sometimes

  662. says hard things

  663. in order to draw

  664. a person back from sin.

  665. Verse 32,

  666. stand up

  667. in the presence

  668. of the aged,

  669. show respect

  670. for the elderly,

  671. and revere

  672. your God.

  673. respect

  674. within society,

  675. respect for

  676. our elders is there.

  677. Verse 34,

  678. the foreigner

  679. residing among you

  680. must be treated

  681. as your native-born.

  682. Love them

  683. as yourself.

  684. In light of the gospel,

  685. in light of God's

  686. saving grace,

  687. love those

  688. who come

  689. from other countries.

  690. So when you see

  691. how wide-ranging

  692. this is,

  693. holiness applies

  694. to so many levels

  695. of society.

  696. Let's take a couple

  697. of examples

  698. as it applies

  699. to family.

  700. Verse 3

  701. gives us that

  702. command that heads

  703. up the second table

  704. of the law.

  705. Each of you

  706. must respect

  707. your mother

  708. and father.

  709. Essential,

  710. family essential

  711. to society,

  712. and essential

  713. to good family living

  714. is respect

  715. and honor.

  716. But there's also

  717. reference

  718. to family

  719. in verse 29,

  720. a very different way.

  721. Do not degrade

  722. your daughter

  723. by making her

  724. a prostitute,

  725. or the land

  726. will turn to

  727. prostitution

  728. and be filled

  729. with wickedness.

  730. So God's people

  731. are to follow

  732. God's sexual ethic,

  733. not that of

  734. the surrounding

  735. countries.

  736. There are laws

  737. about agriculture

  738. in here.

  739. Verse 9,

  740. When you reap

  741. the harvest

  742. of your land,

  743. do not reap

  744. to the very edges

  745. of your field.

  746. Do not go over

  747. your vineyard

  748. a second time

  749. or pick up

  750. the grapes

  751. that have fallen.

  752. Leave them

  753. for the poor

  754. and the foreigner.

  755. As they went

  756. about their

  757. essential business,

  758. they were to be

  759. concerned for the

  760. weakest and the

  761. most vulnerable

  762. within society

  763. and to make

  764. provision for them.

  765. Justice is mentioned

  766. in verse 15.

  767. Do not pervert

  768. justice,

  769. do not show

  770. partiality to the

  771. poor,

  772. or favoritism

  773. to the great,

  774. but judge

  775. your neighbor

  776. fairly.

  777. The idea that

  778. justice is to be

  779. blind.

  780. Now,

  781. we don't show

  782. favoritism on

  783. either side.

  784. What about

  785. business?

  786. Verse 35,

  787. do not use

  788. dishonest standards

  789. when measuring

  790. length,

  791. weight,

  792. or quantity.

  793. Use honest

  794. scales

  795. and honest

  796. weight.

  797. Integrity

  798. in business

  799. practices.

  800. Religion is in

  801. here as well.

  802. Verse 3,

  803. you must observe

  804. my Sabbaths.

  805. Verse 4,

  806. do not turn

  807. to idols

  808. or make metal

  809. gods for yourselves.

  810. Verse 30,

  811. observe my

  812. Sabbaths

  813. and have

  814. reverence

  815. for my

  816. sanctuary.

  817. So,

  818. religious life

  819. matters

  820. because God

  821. is holy,

  822. but so too

  823. does family

  824. life and

  825. business life

  826. and agriculture

  827. and life

  828. in society.

  829. All of life

  830. matters to

  831. God.

  832. All of life

  833. is an

  834. opportunity

  835. to represent

  836. God.

  837. Holiness

  838. represents

  839. a morally

  840. consistent

  841. and good

  842. God.

  843. God.

  844. So,

  845. in these

  846. values,

  847. we see

  848. honesty,

  849. we see

  850. compassion,

  851. we see

  852. truth-telling,

  853. justice for

  854. all,

  855. respect,

  856. generosity,

  857. care for

  858. the weak,

  859. racial equality,

  860. all of these

  861. reflecting the

  862. character of

  863. our God

  864. and all of

  865. them matter

  866. to God,

  867. all of

  868. these and

  869. more.

  870. and in

  871. that way

  872. then,

  873. we have

  874. so many

  875. opportunities

  876. in day-to-day

  877. life

  878. to bear

  879. witness to

  880. the character

  881. of God,

  882. to live

  883. for the

  884. glory of

  885. God,

  886. to recognize

  887. what a

  888. gift it

  889. would be

  890. to our

  891. workplace,

  892. to our

  893. school,

  894. to our

  895. family,

  896. to our

  897. community

  898. if we

  899. were to

  900. live out

  901. these holy

  902. lives as

  903. recognized

  904. here in

  905. Leviticus 19

  906. and throughout

  907. God's

  908. Word.

  909. And think

  910. about this

  911. as well.

  912. Think about

  913. what a

  914. difference it

  915. would make

  916. to your

  917. Monday morning

  918. if you

  919. were to

  920. get out

  921. of bed

  922. or to

  923. go out

  924. of the

  925. door

  926. recognizing

  927. I go

  928. as one

  929. of God's

  930. representatives.

  931. I have

  932. been called

  933. to be part

  934. of that

  935. kingdom

  936. of priests,

  937. to go

  938. to our

  939. work,

  940. to go

  941. into our

  942. day,

  943. to go

  944. onto our

  945. university

  946. campus saying

  947. I want

  948. to be a

  949. blessing

  950. to others

  951. and to be

  952. on the

  953. lookout for

  954. how that

  955. might happen.

  956. I want

  957. to be able

  958. to speak

  959. God's

  960. Word to

  961. others

  962. just as

  963. the priest

  964. used to,

  965. to encourage

  966. a fellow

  967. Christian or

  968. to perhaps

  969. share with

  970. a non-Christian

  971. friend something

  972. that we've read

  973. in the Bible

  974. or something

  975. we were thinking

  976. about on Sunday.

  977. Imagine what

  978. difference it

  979. would make

  980. if we went

  981. out praying

  982. day by day.

  983. I want to

  984. bring the

  985. hope of

  986. God's saving

  987. grace to

  988. someone.

  989. I want to

  990. have the

  991. chance to

  992. tell someone

  993. about the

  994. good news

  995. of Jesus.

  996. Can you

  997. imagine what

  998. difference it

  999. would make to

  1000. our sense of

  1001. purpose and

  1002. mission,

  1003. our sense of

  1004. dependence on

  1005. God,

  1006. our prayerfulness,

  1007. if we were to

  1008. recognize that

  1009. we're called to

  1010. be that kind

  1011. of ambassadors,

  1012. to be those

  1013. kingdom of

  1014. priests,

  1015. to be that

  1016. holy nation.

  1017. So as we

  1018. close,

  1019. let me,

  1020. I'm not a

  1021. teacher so I'm

  1022. going to invite

  1023. you to do a

  1024. homework assignment.

  1025. Teachers don't

  1026. usually invite you

  1027. to do it.

  1028. But imagine,

  1029. go home tonight

  1030. or find some

  1031. time in the

  1032. next few days

  1033. by yourself,

  1034. in your family,

  1035. with a friend,

  1036. read through

  1037. Leviticus 19,

  1038. ask yourself,

  1039. what is the

  1040. principle being

  1041. taught here?

  1042. And how would

  1043. this law apply

  1044. to my

  1045. 21st century

  1046. context?

  1047. Bearing in mind

  1048. that holiness

  1049. matters,

  1050. and representing

  1051. God well

  1052. matters,

  1053. how can I

  1054. take these

  1055. laws that

  1056. reflect the

  1057. heart of

  1058. God to

  1059. understand them

  1060. in our

  1061. context and

  1062. then to

  1063. prayerfully seek

  1064. to live them

  1065. out?

  1066. Why do that?

  1067. Why take the

  1068. time to do

  1069. what would

  1070. seem like a

  1071. homework exercise?

  1072. Because of our

  1073. privilege.

  1074. God's

  1075. because it's a

  1076. privilege to

  1077. represent our

  1078. holy God who

  1079. saved us through

  1080. Jesus.

  1081. It's a privilege

  1082. to be part of

  1083. God's holy

  1084. priesthood.

  1085. But it's also

  1086. a responsibility,

  1087. a responsibility

  1088. we want to do

  1089. well for the

  1090. honour of our

  1091. God and for

  1092. the sake of

  1093. those around

  1094. us.

  1095. God says,

  1096. be holy

  1097. because I,

  1098. the Lord,

  1099. your God,

  1100. am holy.

  1101. Let's pray

  1102. together.

  1103. Lord,

  1104. our God,

  1105. we thank

  1106. you for

  1107. these passages

  1108. that we have

  1109. read and that

  1110. reminder that

  1111. you are a God

  1112. who entered

  1113. into covenant

  1114. with your

  1115. people, a

  1116. covenant with

  1117. grace.

  1118. And we thank

  1119. you for the

  1120. new covenant

  1121. in the body

  1122. and blood of

  1123. Jesus given

  1124. for us.

  1125. Thank you for

  1126. your saving

  1127. and eternal

  1128. commitment to

  1129. love your

  1130. church and to

  1131. save your

  1132. church.

  1133. And Lord,

  1134. as you have

  1135. called us,

  1136. we ask that

  1137. you would

  1138. enable us to

  1139. be that royal

  1140. priesthood and

  1141. that holy

  1142. nation, that

  1143. you would give

  1144. us that sense

  1145. of privilege and

  1146. wonder, a joy in

  1147. the gospel day

  1148. by day.

  1149. But you'd also

  1150. give to us that

  1151. sense of

  1152. responsibility,

  1153. that we would

  1154. be aware of

  1155. our mission,

  1156. of our

  1157. calling, so

  1158. that we would

  1159. want to think

  1160. about how to

  1161. live holy

  1162. lives for you,

  1163. recognizing that

  1164. we all have

  1165. different families

  1166. and friendship

  1167. groups and

  1168. different workplaces

  1169. and different

  1170. levels of

  1171. responsibility.

  1172. responsibility.

  1173. Lord, may you

  1174. make each one

  1175. of us wise to

  1176. make the best

  1177. use of our

  1178. time and to

  1179. be aware of

  1180. you at work

  1181. in the people

  1182. around us and

  1183. to see how you

  1184. might use us for

  1185. your kingdom and

  1186. for your glory.

  1187. And please help

  1188. us together to

  1189. endeavor to live

  1190. those holy lives

  1191. as we recognize

  1192. that we are saved

  1193. by your grace,

  1194. we are united to

  1195. the Lord Jesus

  1196. and united to

  1197. one another

  1198. through faith.

  1199. We pray in his

  1200. name.
