  1. Father, each of us know people who have a real problem with anger, and Father, we just lift them before you at this time.

  2. Father, you know that there are some of us here who have great problems with anger,

  3. and some of us, Father, who don't know that we have anger problems or anger issues at all,

  4. and we ask that you, with gentle but loving power, make that clear to us.

  5. But, Father, we also know that we often get angry, and sometimes we regret it, and sometimes we don't, but we should,

  6. and we're just confused about anger.

  7. We ask that you would speak to our hearts this morning.

  8. You'd bring your word, your grace, your gospel to our hearts,

  9. that we might live well in the face of injustice,

  10. that we might live with anger in a way that is good for people and good for us and brings you glory.

  11. And so we want to know your wisdom.

  12. So pour out the Holy Spirit, and we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  13. Amen.

  14. Please be seated.

  15. If you Google this question about negative emotions,

  16. and, of course, when you Google something, you always get the right answer.

  17. But if you Google things about negative emotions,

  18. on all of the lists that I looked at,

  19. the first list that come up in every single case, anger,

  20. is listed as one of the negative emotions.

  21. In fact, it's often the first negative emotion which is listed.

  22. But last week, I talked about how if the day ever came that in Canada,

  23. every Canadian was doing a meditation technique,

  24. or a type of meditation that meant that they didn't get angry,

  25. or if every Canadian was in a type of therapy or counseling

  26. which meant that they didn't get angry,

  27. or if every Canadian was taking a drug that meant that they wouldn't get angry,

  28. if in any one of those three situations or a combination of that day came

  29. when something came that nobody in Canada or nobody in any country was getting mad,

  30. getting angry,

  31. that would be the day that tyrants and oppressors and abusers

  32. would throw a party and dance a jig

  33. because it would mean that they weren't being confronted ever

  34. by the wrong that they were doing.

  35. And so, the fact of the matter is that the Lord will never,

  36. part of God's common grace is that God in his common grace

  37. will never remove from human beings their sense of anger

  38. because to do that, he'd have to destroy our sense of right and wrong.

  39. Now, having said that, we all know that anger still is problematic in all sorts of ways.

  40. Some of us get too angry.

  41. Some of us don't get angry when we should because we've been so beat up.

  42. Some of us get angry about the wrong things.

  43. Some of us, anger becomes a type of an addiction, a type of habit.

  44. And often, our anger leads to hatred.

  45. And it's like a drug and it can do all sorts of harm.

  46. But so, it's just complicated.

  47. Anger is complicated.

  48. Well, believe it or not, the story that we're going to look at is the book of Jonah comes to an end.

  49. This book that was written over 2,700 years ago, almost 2,800 years ago,

  50. this book that was written so long ago has such deep wisdom about anger.

  51. So, it'd be a great help to me if you would turn in your Bibles to Jonah chapter 4.

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  52. Jonah chapter 4.

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  53. And we're looking at the fifth verse.

  54. We've been preaching through the book of Jonah.

  55. And as I've shared before, the way to look at the book of Jonah, the way to understand it,

  56. as you're reading it, is to think of a Netflix series that had four or five episodes.

  57. I've taken, in a sense, the fourth episode and turned it into two.

  58. And, you know, if you see a good Netflix series from the BBC or from Germany or France or Belgium or something like that,

  59. each episode tells a story.

  60. But if you look at all of the episodes together, they tell a far more nuanced and interesting story.

  61. And that's the way to understand the book of Jonah.

  62. So, if you were making a Netflix special for it,

  63. Jonah chapter 1 tells the story of God wanting Jonah to go to Nineveh,

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  64. the capital of the most powerful empire in the ancient Near East,

  65. to go there and confront them.

  66. Jonah doesn't want to do this.

  67. He goes the opposite direction.

  68. And that part of the story of Jonah, many people, secular people, people of other religions,

  69. they know this part of the story.

  70. It becomes clear that Jonah is the one responsible for the storm.

  71. He's thrown overboard.

  72. End of episode 1, great cliffhanger.

  73. Episode 2, a great aquatic beast, just as Jonah's about to drown,

  74. a great aquatic beast comes, swallows Jonah, and Jonah discovers that rather than being dead, he's alive.

  75. Unfortunately, the good news, he's not dead, he's alive.

  76. The bad news is he's in the intestines of a great aquatic beast.

  77. And how he describes what happens, he does in the form of a prayer,

  78. which is also a bit of a conversion prayer.

  79. Him just being, in a sense, gobsmacked at the mercy of God and the kindness of God

  80. and his trust in God that God will deliver him.

  81. And episode 2 ends with Jonah being vomited by the great aquatic beast onto the shore.

  82. End of episode 2.

  83. Episode 3, he goes to Nineveh.

  84. He proclaims the message.

  85. He says, if you don't repent, you will be overthrown in the same way that Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown,

  86. completely and utterly.

  87. And to his complete and utter shock and amazement,

  88. well, not entirely, but to our shock and amazement,

  89. Nineveh repents from the king right down to the lowest individual.

  90. And what they do is they say, even though this is a message which seems that we have no hope,

  91. we are going to repent of our violence, our evil, and our injustice,

  92. and we are going to cast ourselves upon the mercy of the Lord

  93. in the hope that he will have mercy upon us.

  94. And God relents from his justice upon them,

  95. which would then make you wonder why on earth could there be any episodes after that?

  96. Well, the episodes after it go at a very interesting thing

  97. because, you see, the fact of the matter is,

  98. is that the Bible and the Lord is concerned not just with what we do,

  99. but the motivation of what we do,

  100. the motivation behind why we do things,

  101. what we want to have happen,

  102. is also very important in trying to understand what's going on in our lives.

  103. And so what we looked at last week, the first four verses,

  104. is this shocking thing that the reason that Jonah had run away from God

  105. was because he believed that God was merciful and compassionate and all-powerful,

  106. and that it might very well be that if he went to Nineveh

  107. and proclaimed their need to repent, they might repent,

  108. and if they repented, God might not destroy them.

  109. And Jonah hated the Ninevites so much,

  110. he didn't want them to be spared.

  111. He wanted God to destroy them.

  112. And we looked at that last week.

  113. But now, and we looked at it, we talked about it in terms of mercy.

  114. But if you think about it for a second,

  115. and many people in the ancient world,

  116. when they were reading this for the first time,

  117. they would have maybe said,

  118. well, one moment, before we go any farther,

  119. I don't know if Jonah was wrong to be angry,

  120. and I don't know if maybe God, the Lord was,

  121. like maybe Jonah was right to be angry at what the Lord did,

  122. and maybe what the Lord did was wrong.

  123. Like, they are, you know, I don't know if I said this last week,

  124. I've said it, you know, some other time,

  125. and you might or might not remember it,

  126. but the fact of the matter is that Nineveh,

  127. the Assyrian Empire,

  128. literally, literally practiced genocide.

  129. They literally practiced genocide.

  130. And in fact, about,

  131. if this was written around 755 BC,

  132. 33 years after this,

  133. Assyria would reinvade the northern kingdom of Israel,

  134. take all of the people away

  135. in bondage and slavery,

  136. and the ten and a half tribes

  137. that made up what was then known as Israel

  138. completely disappeared from history.

  139. Like, real genocide,

  140. real, complete, utter, thorough genocide.

  141. These were bad people.

  142. And many people in the ancient world,

  143. reading this in 755 or 722 or 700,

  144. they'd go, I don't know, you know,

  145. maybe I don't know about this story,

  146. what's going on with this story.

  147. So that's why the story continues.

  148. The Lord is going to press in,

  149. and we're going to see,

  150. well, let's just see what happens.

  151. Look at verse 5.

  152. So remember, what's just happened is

  153. Jonah blasts the Lord

  154. and says, I'm so angry, I want to die.

  155. He blasts the Lord.

  156. The Lord asks him a question.

  157. Do you think it's right for you to be angry?

  158. Verse 5, Jonah responds,

  159. in verse 5,

  160. Jonah went out of the city of Nineveh

  161. and sat to the east of the city

  162. and made a booth for himself there.

  163. He sat under it in the shade

  164. till he should see

  165. what would become of the city.

  166. In other words,

  167. Jonah hopes,

  168. I've just given the Lord a blast

  169. and I think I'm right

  170. and I think he's wrong

  171. and I'm going to give him a blast

  172. and I hope I've changed his mind.

  173. So I'm going to just sit out here,

  174. still angry,

  175. and I'm going to make something

  176. so I have a bit of shade

  177. and I'm just going to sit

  178. hoping that the Lord changes his mind

  179. and fire comes down from heaven

  180. and completely obliterates

  181. and kills all of the people in Nineveh.

  182. That's where Jonah is.

  183. Well, does the Lord change his mind?

  184. Well, let's see what happens

  185. in verse chapter 6.

  186. There's sort of a surprising thing

  187. that happens in verse 6.

  188. Now, the Lord God appointed a plant

  189. and made it come up over Jonah

  190. that it might be a shade over his head

  191. to save him from his discomfort.

  192. So Jonah was exceedingly glad

  193. because of the plant.

  194. Now, just pause.

  195. What's described here,

  196. the word appointed is very important.

  197. It shows the Lord being sovereign

  198. over the world.

  199. It's the Lord appoints

  200. a great aquatic beast to it.

  201. Just the perfect time swallowed Jonah

  202. and he appoints the plant.

  203. You're going to see in a moment

  204. he's going to appoint a worm.

  205. He's going to appoint a scorching wind

  206. and it shows how the Lord is sovereign.

  207. But what the Lord does here

  208. is he causes a plant to grow

  209. very, very quickly

  210. and it would have been like a vine

  211. that sort of entwined itself

  212. over the booth

  213. and it would have had

  214. very, very large leaves.

  215. So while the booth itself,

  216. which would have just been made out of sticks,

  217. wouldn't have provided very much shade,

  218. all of a sudden with the leaves

  219. it would have provided

  220. very, very good shade.

  221. I don't know how many of you

  222. have been in a country

  223. like Iraq or like Israel.

  224. The heat is if you're,

  225. I mean, not if you're down by the ocean,

  226. but in where this is,

  227. it's a dry heat.

  228. And so when it's a dry heat,

  229. it means if you're in the shade

  230. and there's a breeze,

  231. it actually can be surprisingly comfortable

  232. even though the temperature

  233. might be quite high.

  234. And so the Lord does this.

  235. And there's sort of an interesting thing

  236. in the original language.

  237. The language is that

  238. when it says the Lord wants to save him,

  239. what it's saying is that

  240. the Lord hopes

  241. that by cooling Jonah off,

  242. he can cool off his anger as well.

  243. Because as we all know,

  244. sometimes if things are just going wrong,

  245. if you're a bit in pain,

  246. you're more grumpy.

  247. I shared last week,

  248. I can get hungry

  249. and not realize that

  250. because I'm hungry,

  251. I'm getting more grumpy.

  252. Somebody in fact told me

  253. there's a word for it,

  254. hangry.

  255. H before the word angry.

  256. And so I can be prone

  257. to being hangry.

  258. And so there's a similar type of thing

  259. that goes on here.

  260. And then it says that

  261. Jonah's exceedingly glad.

  262. And it's a link

  263. to what just happened

  264. in the previous story.

  265. Because if you go back

  266. and read verse 1,

  267. Jonah is exceedingly,

  268. like just hopping,

  269. unbelievably deeply

  270. high level angry

  271. that the Lord didn't destroy Nineveh.

  272. And now that same description

  273. of just unbelievably fever pitch,

  274. but now he's happy.

  275. He's happy over the plant.

  276. And it's connecting the two stories

  277. at the level of the original language.

  278. So what's going to happen now?

  279. Is Jonah in fact going to say,

  280. oh yeah,

  281. okay, now that I'm a bit cool

  282. and there's a breeze,

  283. I don't know,

  284. yeah, maybe I have to tone down

  285. my anger a little bit.

  286. Maybe the Lord was right.

  287. I'm a little bit too angry.

  288. Well, let's see what happens.

  289. Verse 7,

  290. but when dawn came up the next day,

  291. God appointed a worm

  292. that attacked the plant.

  293. Actually, in the original language,

  294. if you use real technical language,

  295. it's smite.

  296. It's an old-fashioned word,

  297. you know,

  298. like he has a sword,

  299. you smite,

  300. he smites the plant.

  301. And sorry,

  302. I like old words.

  303. I just,

  304. for the three of you

  305. out there in the room,

  306. that's how you could translate it

  307. who like old words.

  308. We'll read verse 7 again,

  309. but when dawn came up the next day,

  310. God appointed a worm

  311. that attacked the plant

  312. so that it withered.

  313. In other words,

  314. it dies.

  315. And when the sun rose,

  316. God appointed a scorching east wind

  317. and the sun beat down

  318. on the head of Jonah

  319. so that he was faint.

  320. And he asked that he might die

  321. and said,

  322. it is better for me

  323. to die than to live.

  324. He'd said that before.

  325. He was so angry,

  326. it would be better for him

  327. to die than to live.

  328. He says that in the previous story.

  329. But God said to Jonah,

  330. do you do well

  331. to be angry for the plant?

  332. And Jonah said,

  333. yes,

  334. I do well to be angry,

  335. angry enough to die.

  336. That's what he says.

  337. I probably should have said that

  338. without a smile

  339. to be really communicate the anger.

  340. And just sort of pause there.

  341. Earlier,

  342. as I shared,

  343. the same type of question

  344. was asked in the previous story,

  345. do you do well to be angry?

  346. And it's very interesting.

  347. In the original language,

  348. it does something

  349. which you can't really do in English.

  350. There's many of you here

  351. who speak multiple languages.

  352. And you know how sometimes

  353. it's complicated

  354. to try to communicate something

  355. in another language.

  356. And that's one of these cases.

  357. And really,

  358. the question

  359. could be understood two ways

  360. or the same way,

  361. but with two different senses.

  362. Part of it is

  363. just asking Jonah,

  364. do you realize how angry you are?

  365. Do you realize

  366. how thoroughly,

  367. completely consumed

  368. you are with anger?

  369. I've done counseling sessions

  370. with people.

  371. It's so,

  372. like it's not funny,

  373. but it is funny.

  374. And I sit there

  375. and they're across from me

  376. and they're red.

  377. They're red.

  378. You can see veins

  379. throbbing in their temples.

  380. And they're either sitting there

  381. grabbing the tape,

  382. the arms like this,

  383. or they're tapping furiously.

  384. And I might eventually say,

  385. do you think you,

  386. like,

  387. you're really angry?

  388. I'm not angry.

  389. They say in an angry voice.

  390. And you can't even do any counseling

  391. until you get them to realize,

  392. one second,

  393. just time out here,

  394. you're angry.

  395. You don't realize you're angry,

  396. but you're really angry.

  397. Okay,

  398. and you can't have

  399. any other conversation

  400. about anything else

  401. until the person realizes

  402. how angry they are.

  403. So this is like

  404. a modern counseling question

  405. that the Lord asks them.

  406. First of all,

  407. do you realize

  408. how angry you actually are?

  409. And the second sense of it,

  410. it could also,

  411. and some of your English versions

  412. show the two different senses.

  413. The other question is,

  414. is it right that you're so angry?

  415. Like,

  416. do you think it's right

  417. that you're so angry

  418. over this?

  419. Just this,

  420. I know that,

  421. you know,

  422. in modern counseling,

  423. you're not supposed to say,

  424. you know,

  425. make judgmental comments

  426. about emotions

  427. and all of that type of stuff,

  428. but that's wrong.

  429. It's just sometimes just wrong.

  430. Sometimes it's very right.

  431. You know,

  432. a person has their emotions,

  433. but sometimes you have to,

  434. in fact,

  435. in counseling,

  436. you often go off,

  437. you often use emotions

  438. as a key

  439. to figure out

  440. what's actually going on

  441. because emotions show

  442. what we value,

  443. what we think is important.

  444. It reveals our moral order.

  445. It reveals the idols

  446. that we have.

  447. That's what emotions

  448. often reveal.

  449. Or the good things,

  450. not all bad things

  451. because sometimes

  452. it reveals a good sense

  453. of,

  454. a good way

  455. of understanding the world

  456. and they're very healthy,

  457. but they reveal things.

  458. I was just talking

  459. to somebody

  460. within the last couple of weeks.

  461. This is a professional

  462. and the court

  463. had asked

  464. that he do an assessment

  465. of a person

  466. around a particular issue

  467. that was within

  468. his medical area

  469. of expertise

  470. because it affected

  471. whether or not

  472. a certain type

  473. of sentencing

  474. was going on

  475. and the person,

  476. it was a very,

  477. very serious offense.

  478. It could mean

  479. a long time

  480. doing hard time

  481. in jail.

  482. And basically,

  483. as he was sharing

  484. this with me

  485. and he was sort of

  486. laughing about it

  487. a little bit,

  488. the person tried

  489. to fake it

  490. and they were doing

  491. a terrible job

  492. of faking it

  493. and he eventually

  494. just said,

  495. okay,

  496. you don't have

  497. this condition,

  498. you're just trying

  499. to fake it.

  500. And as they left

  501. the room,

  502. they were furious

  503. with him

  504. because they were

  505. trying to manipulate

  506. the medical assessment

  507. so they could get out

  508. of doing hard time

  509. and he caught them

  510. and their response

  511. wasn't,

  512. oh,

  513. I'm so relieved

  514. I don't have it.

  515. No,

  516. they were,

  517. I won't say

  518. all the different

  519. F-bombs

  520. and other types

  521. of expletives

  522. that they used

  523. as they walked

  524. out of the room

  525. shaking with fury.

  526. Sometimes what

  527. we're angry about,

  528. as we all know,

  529. isn't right

  530. and it's good

  531. to confront them.

  532. So here,

  533. just to bring it

  534. back to the story,

  535. so what's happened?

  536. God has had,

  537. has shown mercy

  538. to Nineveh.

  539. They,

  540. when they're,

  541. they come face-to-face

  542. with God,

  543. their response

  544. to coming face-to-face

  545. to the Lord

  546. is to say

  547. that we're going

  548. to stop acting unjustly,

  549. we're going to stop

  550. doing that which is evil

  551. and we're going to stop

  552. all of our habits

  553. of violence

  554. and we're going

  555. to cast ourselves

  556. upon the mercy

  557. of the Lord

  558. in the hope

  559. that he will stay

  560. his judgment

  561. and the Lord sees it

  562. and he does stay it

  563. and Jonah,

  564. who's not a Ninevite,

  565. not an Assyrian,

  566. he's furious

  567. over this.

  568. He's furious

  569. and remember I said,

  570. well,

  571. maybe there's something,

  572. maybe Jonah had,

  573. maybe God's bit,

  574. the Lord's a bit wrong

  575. to show that

  576. and maybe Jonah

  577. has something right

  578. but now this instance

  579. with the plant,

  580. the plant grows,

  581. the plant dies,

  582. Jonah's furious,

  583. furious,

  584. furious at the death

  585. of a plant

  586. and now the Lord

  587. is going to ask

  588. two very,

  589. another very searching

  590. question.

  591. Remember,

  592. he's already said,

  593. do you think it's,

  594. do you realize how angry

  595. you are?

  596. Do you think it's right

  597. to be so angry

  598. over the plant?

  599. Is it right for you

  600. to be so consumed

  601. with anger

  602. over the death

  603. of a plant?

  604. And Jonah's response

  605. is,

  606. I'm so angry

  607. I could die

  608. and then here's

  609. how the Lord goes on

  610. and the book of Jonah

  611. is very interesting.

  612. The only other book

  613. in the Bible

  614. is Lamentations.

  615. It's the only other book

  616. in the Bible

  617. that ends with a question

  618. and everything

  619. in the book of Jonah

  620. is leading

  621. to these last two verses

  622. where the Lord

  623. is going to ask

  624. a question

  625. and here's how it goes.

  626. And the Lord said,

  627. verse 10,

  628. you pity the plant.

  629. The other way

  630. you can translate

  631. that word pity

  632. is you have compassion

  633. and want to do something

  634. out of compassion

  635. for the plant.

  636. You pity

  637. or you have compassion

  638. for the plant

  639. for which you did not labor

  640. nor did you make it grow

  641. which came into being

  642. in a night

  643. and perished in a night.

  644. In other words,

  645. if you know anything

  646. about plants,

  647. those are plants

  648. that don't last very long.

  649. They're very,

  650. very transient.

  651. Here's the big question.

  652. Verse 11,

  653. And should I not have compassion?

  654. Should I not have pity

  655. on Nineveh?

  656. That great city

  657. in which there are

  658. more than 120,000 people

  659. who do not know

  660. their right hand

  661. from their left

  662. and also much cattle.

  663. And that's how

  664. the book of Jonah ends.

  665. Shouldn't I have compassion

  666. and pity on people?

  667. Shouldn't I have that?

  668. That's how the book ends.

  669. Just as a bit of an aside,

  670. did you know

  671. that the same man

  672. who was responsible

  673. for the long, long, long,

  674. most responsible,

  675. humanly speaking,

  676. for the long, long struggle

  677. in England

  678. to ban all slavery,

  679. William Wilberforce,

  680. was also the man

  681. who started

  682. the first in the world

  683. Society for the Prevention

  684. of Cruelty to Animals.

  685. Did you know that?

  686. The same man

  687. who worked

  688. to abolish slavery

  689. set up an SPCA,

  690. the Society for the Prevention

  691. of Cruelty to Animals.

  692. The Lord has compassion

  693. on animals.

  694. And if the Lord

  695. has compassion

  696. and mercy

  697. to animals,

  698. we should too.

  699. We should too.

  700. Just a bit of an aside

  701. as a throwaway.

  702. So,

  703. let's,

  704. how do we bring

  705. this all home?

  706. Remember,

  707. I began by saying

  708. that if the day ever came

  709. that through counseling,

  710. therapy,

  711. meditation,

  712. or drugs

  713. that we no longer

  714. experienced anger,

  715. then the husbands

  716. who abused their wives,

  717. the employers

  718. who abused their employees,

  719. the tyrants

  720. who abused their people,

  721. they would be happy

  722. if people no longer

  723. experienced anger.

  724. And so,

  725. we realized

  726. that you don't,

  727. that anger

  728. is a complicated emotion

  729. and that we don't want to,

  730. we don't want to get rid of it

  731. I mean,

  732. that actually

  733. wouldn't really be wise

  734. because anger

  735. is connected

  736. even if our moral order

  737. and moral understanding

  738. is all confused

  739. and even deeply confused,

  740. you'd think you want to change

  741. the order of understanding

  742. of what's right and wrong

  743. but not ever get rid of that aspect

  744. that when we see

  745. great evil being done,

  746. great wrongdoing being done,

  747. great sin being done,

  748. great injustice being done,

  749. that the proper response

  750. should be that we are angry

  751. at the injustice

  752. and the wrong.

  753. So,

  754. it's complicated.

  755. What we think about,

  756. if you think about it

  757. in a second,

  758. is we want something

  759. to disrupt anger

  760. but not eliminate it

  761. in a way

  762. which also eliminates

  763. our sense of right and wrong.

  764. we want to disrupt anger

  765. in the sense that

  766. part of the problem

  767. with anger

  768. for us human beings

  769. is that anger

  770. very quickly leads

  771. to hatred

  772. and that anger

  773. quickly leads

  774. to something becoming

  775. like a habit of anger

  776. that we can go to anger

  777. to relieve stress,

  778. that we can go to anger

  779. to make ourselves feel good

  780. and lose sense

  781. of the other person

  782. and so on one hand,

  783. anger is connected

  784. to a sense of injustice

  785. and wrongdoing.

  786. On the other hand,

  787. there is something problematic

  788. in terms of where anger

  789. can go

  790. and so,

  791. you need something

  792. to disrupt the anger.

  793. But here's the problem

  794. in our culture.

  795. Most of our attempts

  796. to disrupt anger

  797. want to give evil a pass.

  798. Most of our attempts,

  799. in fact,

  800. all Buddhist compassion,

  801. at the end of the day

  802. is indifferent

  803. to whether or not

  804. we give evil a pass.

  805. The meditation technique

  806. is to lose that sense of self,

  807. to see yourself

  808. distant from yourself

  809. and so you can just observe

  810. the wrong

  811. that you've either done

  812. that's caused the anger

  813. or the wrong

  814. that somebody else is doing

  815. and it's in a sense

  816. an attempt to desensitize us

  817. to the wrongness

  818. of what has been done.

  819. A lot of counseling

  820. and therapy

  821. is really just get over it,

  822. which means,

  823. okay, yeah,

  824. they've done that

  825. and just get over it.

  826. In a sense,

  827. it's advice to give it a pass

  828. and if you take the drug

  829. so that you don't show anger

  830. or anything that happens,

  831. once again,

  832. it's giving evil a pass

  833. and so,

  834. part of the complication

  835. with this is

  836. how do we actually

  837. disrupt anger

  838. so that it doesn't lead

  839. to hatred,

  840. it doesn't become a habit,

  841. it doesn't become an addiction,

  842. but how do we do that?

  843. One of the reasons

  844. we don't want to practice forgiveness

  845. is that for many people

  846. in our culture,

  847. the way we understand forgiveness

  848. is it's going to mean

  849. giving evil and injustice

  850. a pass

  851. and one of the reasons

  852. we don't want to do

  853. some other things about anger

  854. is because it's going to give evil

  855. a pass.

  856. So,

  857. is there something

  858. that can disrupt anger

  859. that does not give evil

  860. and injustice

  861. a pass

  862. or say

  863. that it's not evil?

  864. that's what the book

  865. of Jonah

  866. tackles brilliantly

  867. at the level of the story

  868. because if you think about it,

  869. we looked at it last week,

  870. there's three things

  871. in the Bible

  872. that disrupt anger

  873. in a good way.

  874. If you could put up

  875. the first point,

  876. that would be very helpful.

  877. I had a hard time

  878. wording this point.

  879. I'm not really satisfied

  880. with how I worded it.

  881. I couldn't figure out

  882. how to fix it.

  883. You know,

  884. you folks can tell me

  885. how to fix it later.

  886. It's the best I could do.

  887. Only that which is rooted

  888. in a just moral order

  889. can disrupt anger

  890. in a good way.

  891. Only that which is rooted

  892. in a just moral order

  893. can disrupt anger

  894. in a good way.

  895. Now,

  896. I'm not going to say much

  897. about it this way.

  898. There's in a sense

  899. one of the ways

  900. to disrupt anger

  901. in a good way

  902. or to start to heal

  903. our anger.

  904. And for those of us

  905. who struggle with anger,

  906. and you know who you are,

  907. we know who we are,

  908. part of what we have to do

  909. is not just pray

  910. that we won't experience anger,

  911. but partly what we need to do

  912. is first pray

  913. that the Lord

  914. will heal

  915. our sense of right and wrong.

  916. It happens in the story

  917. in a very simple way.

  918. Okay, Jonah, really?

  919. You don't think people

  920. are worth more than a plant?

  921. Like, really?

  922. Plants matter more

  923. than a human life?

  924. Really?

  925. Like, what moral order

  926. does that come out of?

  927. People matter more than plants.

  928. They do.

  929. So partly the story itself

  930. in some small way

  931. is trying to help us

  932. to shape,

  933. to reconsider

  934. our moral order.

  935. And for some of us,

  936. you know,

  937. we can get angry

  938. about lots of things.

  939. We can get angry

  940. at the fact

  941. that we're not making

  942. enough money.

  943. And in a sense,

  944. what that is trying

  945. to tell us

  946. is that having a lot

  947. of money

  948. is very, very,

  949. it's right

  950. to have lots of money

  951. and it's not right

  952. to have lots of money.

  953. Or we can get angry

  954. because we're just not

  955. losing that weight

  956. that we want to lose.

  957. And the fact of the matter

  958. is,

  959. is that losing weight

  960. is good

  961. and having it on

  962. is bad.

  963. Or we can have,

  964. we can get angry

  965. that we're just not

  966. putting on the muscle.

  967. Or we can have,

  968. it can have angry,

  969. we can get angry.

  970. Here's the thing.

  971. It is not a virtue

  972. to have more money

  973. than somebody else.

  974. Bay Street,

  975. it's not.

  976. It's not.

  977. It's not a sin

  978. to be low income.

  979. It might be a sin

  980. if somebody's doing something

  981. to force you

  982. to be low income

  983. because they're ripping you off.

  984. That can be a sin.

  985. But it's not a sin

  986. to be low income.

  987. It's not a sin

  988. to have a few extra pounds

  989. or not have as much muscles

  990. or not be beautiful.

  991. Just to be plain.

  992. Those aren't moral things.

  993. Those are things

  994. in our culture

  995. we get all upset about.

  996. And so part of our prayer

  997. can be the healing

  998. of our understanding

  999. of right and wrong.

  1000. But the Bible here

  1001. is going to go

  1002. to something deep

1003. and I want to spend more time

  1004. on something different.

  1005. There's three things

1006. that the Bible talks about

  1007. that are rooted

  1008. in the moral order

1009. when you understand it properly.

  1010. You see,

1011. if something's coming out of the,

  1012. since if we understand

  1013. that anger

  1014. is connected

  1015. to the moral order,

  1016. you get angry

  1017. at injustice,

1018. you get angry at evil,

1019. you get angry at sin,

1020. you get angry at that,

  1021. it's connected

  1022. to the moral order.

1023. So maybe if there's something

  1024. that's also rooted

  1025. in the moral order,

  1026. it can disrupt anger

  1027. in a way that's actually

  1028. going to be good

  1029. for people.

1030. And the Bible has three things.

  1031. This story only talks

  1032. about one of them.

1033. One of them is forgiveness.

  1034. Second is mercy,

  1035. which we talked about

  1036. last week.

1037. And the third is this,

  1038. compassion.

  1039. Compassion not just

  1040. as a feeling

  1041. but as an action.

  1042. In the Bible,

  1043. compassion is never

  1044. just a feeling.

  1045. It's something which leads

  1046. to benevolent,

  1047. caring,

  1048. charitable,

  1049. generous action.

  1050. It's not just a feeling.

  1051. It's something

  1052. you see.

  1053. You see,

  1054. how is it?

  1055. Well, here,

  1056. you can put up

  1057. the next point.

  1058. True compassion

  1059. is clear-sighted

  1060. about what is unjust

  1061. and or wrong.

  1062. True compassion

  1063. is clear-sighted

  1064. about what is unjust

  1065. and or wrong.

  1066. You see,

  1067. that's why

  1068. so many of the

  1069. meditation techniques

  1070. and therapies

  1071. and drugs,

  1072. they're amoral.

1073. And they want to dull

1074. the sense of right and wrong

1075. for you to move forward.

  1076. But compassion,

  1077. real compassion,

1078. I'll give you an example

  1079. in a moment,

  1080. is clear-sighted

  1081. about right and wrong.

  1082. Could you put up

  1083. the next point?

1084. Help to nuance it a bit.

  1085. True compassion

  1086. does not do wrong

  1087. or act unjustly.

  1088. Injustice and evil

  1089. are never,

  1090. injustice and evil

  1091. are never compassionate.

  1092. True compassion

  1093. does not do wrong

  1094. or act unjustly.

  1095. Injustice and evil

  1096. are never compassionate.

1097. I'm going to lose you all,

1098. but I'm just going to say

  1099. one thing.

1100. That's one of the many,

  1101. many, many reasons

  1102. why euthanasia

  1103. is wrong

  1104. and it's not compassionate.

  1105. To take the life

1106. of an innocent human being

  1107. is never compassionate.

  1108. To use the power

  1109. of the state,

  1110. true compassion

  1111. does not do wrong

  1112. or act unjustly.

  1113. Injustice and evil

  1114. are never compassionate.

  1115. You think about that

  1116. for a second.

  1117. Imagine that Trump

  1118. loses the next election

  1119. and the day before

  1120. he leads office

  1121. all of his friends

  1122. who are in trouble

  1123. and going to maybe

  1124. go to jail,

  1125. he pardons them all.

  1126. Would you say,

  1127. oh, it's so wonderful

  1128. that Trump is compassionate?

1129. No, you would not say that.

  1130. You'd say,

  1131. that dirty rat.

  1132. Showing compassion.

  1133. And you know what?

  1134. If the Canadians

  1135. had the same power

  1136. and Trudeau did it

1137. in his last day of office,

1138. you'd say the same thing.

  1139. You would.

  1140. It's not compassion.

  1141. Okay?

  1142. If a manager

  1143. treats you terribly

  1144. and you complain

  1145. over their head

  1146. and the boss

  1147. says to you,

1148. I think with your complaint

  1149. they've suffered enough.

1150. I'm going to show compassion.

  1151. You'd go,

  1152. that's not compassion.

  1153. That's not compassion.

  1154. And by the way,

  1155. here,

  1156. I'll throw out

  1157. all of these points.

  1158. I'm using the word

  1159. evil, wrong, and sin.

1160. They're all the same idea

  1161. in the Bible.

  1162. I've just used them,

  1163. varied them

  1164. for a different effect.

  1165. Evil, wrong, and sin.

  1166. Evil isn't sort of

  1167. really bad wrong things.

  1168. Wrong is evil.

  1169. Evil is wrong.

  1170. Sin is wrong.

  1171. Sin is evil.

  1172. Evil is sin.

  1173. You get the picture.

  1174. Now,

  1175. you know,

  1176. one of the things

  1177. is that

  1178. the Lord is described

  1179. in chapter 4 earlier

  1180. as being slow

  1181. to anger.

  1182. Why?

  1183. Because mercy,

1184. as we talked about it

  1185. last week,

  1186. which is also

  1187. rooted in a clear-eyed

  1188. understanding

  1189. of right and wrong,

  1190. in a sense,

  1191. disrupts the anger

  1192. of the Lord,

  1193. in a sense.

  1194. It's a different thing

  1195. because he doesn't

  1196. experience passion.

1197. Here we see the same thing

  1198. happening with compassion.

  1199. Well,

  1200. how on earth

  1201. does this work?

  1202. And why is it?

  1203. I mean,

  1204. on one level,

  1205. at a natural level,

  1206. people do show compassion,

1207. but on the other hand,

  1208. there's a...

  1209. Here,

  1210. let's just talk a little bit

  1211. more about compassion.

1212. If you could put up

  1213. the next point,

  1214. Andrew,

  1215. that would be great.

  1216. You cannot act

  1217. compassionately

  1218. without bearing

  1219. a personal cost.

  1220. You cannot

  1221. act compassionately

  1222. without bearing

  1223. a personal cost.

  1224. Otherwise,

  1225. it's just a feeling.

  1226. Good example.

  1227. Let's say,

  1228. you all know

  1229. I love going

  1230. to coffee places.

  1231. I have a great affection

  1232. for baristas.

  1233. There's all sorts

  1234. of reasons for it,

1235. but one of the things...

  1236. And the same thing

  1237. with people who work

  1238. at McDonald's

  1239. or Tim Hortons.

  1240. You know what?

  1241. These guys and gals,

  1242. they're making minimum wage.

  1243. They could maybe

  1244. be better off

  1245. on welfare.

  1246. But they work.

  1247. They work hard.

  1248. I really admire it.

  1249. I really do.

  1250. They get up,

  1251. especially those

1252. who work in Tim Hortons,

  1253. they wear those

  1254. ugly uniforms.

  1255. You know?

  1256. Or Burger King.

  1257. Ugly,

  1258. ugly,

  1259. ugly uniforms.

1260. They show up on time.

  1261. They do a hard day's work.

  1262. They go home.

  1263. You know what?

  1264. There's all sorts

  1265. of other things

1266. they could do to be late.

  1267. I admire them.

  1268. I really do.

  1269. Anyway,

  1270. so let's say a barista,

  1271. I find out that

1272. they're going to be moving

  1273. and I say,

  1274. you know what?

1275. You can borrow my car.

  1276. Here's the keys.

1277. You can borrow my car.

  1278. I'm not doing anything

  1279. with it all day.

  1280. You borrow the car.

1281. At the end of the day,

1282. if they're borrowing the car,

  1283. I get a call

1284. and they've wrecked my car.

1285. And I can smell alcohol

  1286. off their breath.

1287. Now let me tell you,

  1288. you all know

  1289. that I'm very,

  1290. very,

  1291. very wealthy

  1292. because I drive

  1293. a 1998 Honda Accord.

  1294. And nothing says

  1295. making lots of money

  1296. like driving

  1297. a 1998 Honda Accord,

  1298. which I got,

  1299. I think,

  1300. for $1,800.

  1301. But here's the thing.

  1302. It runs well.

  1303. Somebody totals

  1304. my 1998 Honda Accord,

  1305. I think I'd be lucky

  1306. to get $300

  1307. from an insurer.

1308. and I will not be able

  1309. to replace my car

  1310. for $300.

1311. So what do I do

  1312. to the barista?

  1313. And maybe I know

  1314. that that barista,

1315. if I call the police,

  1316. you know,

  1317. and the insurance,

  1318. I decide I'm going

  1319. to just be justice.

  1320. You're drinking

  1321. and driving

1322. and you wrecked my car.

  1323. There has to be

  1324. consequences for you.

  1325. That's justice.

  1326. But if I happen

  1327. to know as well

  1328. that, you know what,

  1329. they're going to start

1330. a new job next week

1331. and they need to be able

  1332. to have a driver's license,

  1333. if this comes out,

  1334. they might lose

  1335. their driver's license,

  1336. might lose their job,

  1337. might lose their opportunity

1338. to no longer be making

  1339. $14 an hour

1340. to start to move forward

  1341. with their life.

1342. And I look at it

  1343. and I decide,

  1344. you know what,

  1345. I'm going to have

  1346. compassion on them.

1347. I'm still out of car.

  1348. I'm out of car.

  1349. But I've acted

  1350. compassionately.

  1351. I haven't said,

  1352. oh yeah,

  1353. it's all right.

  1354. Yeah, go ahead.

  1355. Drink and drive.

  1356. Here I have a van

  1357. and a six-pack.

  1358. Go for a drive.

  1359. No.

  1360. I decide I'm going

  1361. to swallow it

  1362. out of compassion.

  1363. You cannot act

  1364. compassionately

  1365. without bearing

  1366. a personal cost.

  1367. And you can see

  1368. how compassion here

  1369. is still clear-eyed

  1370. about right and wrong.

  1371. It's based on

  1372. the moral order.

  1373. But I decide

  1374. I'm going to show

  1375. compassion to the barista

  1376. who's maybe heartbroken

  1377. over what they've done,

  1378. just pleading for mercy.

  1379. And I decide

  1380. I'm going to show

  1381. compassion.

  1382. I'm going to show

  1383. compassion maybe

  1384. because I,

  1385. for a whole,

  1386. I won't go into

  1387. the reasons for it,

  1388. but I do it.

  1389. It's going to glorify

  1390. the Lord.

1391. It's good for that person.

  1392. And I'll get over

  1393. the finances,

1394. but it's going to be

  1395. good for them

1396. and it's going to also

1397. bring glory to the Lord

  1398. that I'm going to

  1399. forgive them.

1400. I'm going to forgive the debt.

1401. If you could put up

  1402. the next point.

  1403. On the cross,

1404. we see the Lord himself

  1405. bearing the cost.

1406. We see the Lord himself

  1407. bear the cost

  1408. of showing you

  1409. compassion.

  1410. You see,

  1411. one of the things

  1412. about this whole story

1413. with the book of Jonah

  1414. is there's a riddle

  1415. in this story.

  1416. And the riddle

  1417. in this story is,

  1418. you know what,

1419. the fact of the matter is

  1420. is the Ninevites

  1421. have been doing

  1422. terrible, terrible,

  1423. terrible things

  1424. and it seems

1425. as if they get off.

  1426. One of the things

  1427. to understand

  1428. about this story

1429. is that when the Lord

  1430. shows compassion

  1431. in that particular case,

  1432. it doesn't mean

  1433. he drops the charges,

  1434. so to speak,

  1435. against the Ninevites,

  1436. but they're stayed.

  1437. By stayed,

  1438. it means

  1439. if you're charged

  1440. with an offense

1441. and I wish we had Victor here,

  1442. I think I'm getting this right,

1443. and they stay the charges,

1444. it means they can still

  1445. be brought up.

  1446. It just means

  1447. you're not going forward

  1448. with the prosecution.

  1449. And at the same,

  1450. maybe that's Victor calling

1451. to give us that I got that right.

1452. And it's the same thing,

1453. at the end of the day,

  1454. every single human being

  1455. is going to appear

1456. before the judgment seat of God

  1457. and nobody gets away

  1458. with injustice

  1459. and doing wrong.

  1460. Nobody.

1461. You and I right now,

1462. whether we realize it or not,

1463. the city of Ottawa right now,

  1464. every single person

  1465. walking around right now,

  1466. even though they might

  1467. laugh at God,

  1468. mock God,

  1469. hate God,

1470. shake their fist at God,

  1471. intentionally do things

  1472. that are against God

  1473. just because they want

1474. to give Him the finger

1475. as many times as they want.

1476. They might be doing evil

1477. as much as they want.

  1478. They might lie,

  1479. cheat, steal,

  1480. commit adultery,

  1481. do all those things.

  1482. Every single human being,

  1483. in a sense,

  1484. the charges are stayed,

  1485. but not dropped.

1486. And so it is with Nineveh

  1487. that we'll experience

  1488. the judgment of God

1489. and every one of those Ninevites

  1490. will have,

  1491. by now,

  1492. appeared before

1493. the judgment seat of God

  1494. and they will know

  1495. the Lord's justice.

1496. He has compassion on them

  1497. for a season

  1498. that they might repent.

  1499. So there's a riddle.

1500. But the fact of the matter is

1501. is that you and I

  1502. have done wrong things.

1503. You and I are enmity with God.

1504. And what we see is

  1505. on the cross,

1506. we see the Lord Himself

  1507. bear the cost

  1508. of showing you compassion.

  1509. To use the story

  1510. of the barista,

1511. in the story of the barista,

1512. I use myself as an example,

1513. but at the end of the day,

1514. if you look at it

1515. from the Bible's point of view,

  1516. I am the barista

  1517. who took the car,

  1518. drank,

  1519. wrecked the car.

  1520. That's me.

  1521. And that's you.

1522. Can you put up the next slide,

  1523. please?

  1524. On the cross,

  1525. the Lord dealt

  1526. with your wrongdoing

  1527. with perfect justice

  1528. and perfect compassion.

1529. He dies in your place.

  1530. He takes your judgment

  1531. in your stead

  1532. because He knows

  1533. it will unmake you.

  1534. It's not a matter

1535. that the Lord just says,

  1536. you know what,

  1537. George,

  1538. you're so cute,

1539. I'm just going to pretend

  1540. you didn't do

  1541. those bad things.

  1542. It's,

  1543. George,

  1544. you've done,

1545. this is the wonderful thing

  1546. about the cross

1547. and the fact that God

  1548. is completely just

1549. and knows every single thing

  1550. I've ever done.

1551. Is it one of the reasons

  1552. that it can begin,

1553. I can begin to change

  1554. my moral order

  1555. is that I understand

1556. that God knows me perfectly.

1557. He knows every single thing

  1558. I've done,

  1559. every good thing

  1560. I should have done

  1561. but didn't do.

1562. He knows all my thoughts,

  1563. all my motivations,

  1564. all of those things.

  1565. He knows it

1566. from the moment of my birth

1567. to the moment of my death.

  1568. He knows it all

  1569. and all

  1570. was dealt with

  1571. when Jesus died

1572. in my place on the cross.

  1573. So if it comes

  1574. and it will come,

  1575. I have kids

  1576. and it comes up

  1577. that sometime

  1578. whether it's next week

  1579. or next month

  1580. or next year,

  1581. one of my kids

  1582. tells me,

  1583. Dad,

1584. you did this to me,

1585. you said this to me

  1586. five years,

  1587. ten years ago

  1588. and it has just,

1589. it has been really hard on me.

1590. Now it will be hard

  1591. to hear that

  1592. from my child.

  1593. I like the illusion

  1594. that I'm a perfect dad.

1595. I try never to believe it

1596. but I like the illusion.

  1597. I'm a fallen human being

  1598. like you.

  1599. But you know,

  1600. one of the things

  1601. I can do

  1602. is I can understand

  1603. not that it means

  1604. I get a pass

  1605. because the Lord

  1606. has forgiven me

  1607. but because I know

  1608. there is no evil

  1609. even in my past

  1610. that could be revealed

  1611. to me today

  1612. that the Lord

  1613. did not know about

1614. when he hung upon the cross

  1615. and died for me.

  1616. That there's the possibility

  1617. that my identity

  1618. rooted in the cross

  1619. and Jesus

1620. and what he's done for me

  1621. and the knowledge

1622. of his love for me

  1623. that I can then

  1624. maybe have

  1625. the self-possession

  1626. to say

  1627. I am so sorry

1628. I did that wrong to you.

  1629. Can you forgive me?

  1630. Can you pray

  1631. that I learn

1632. how to do it better?

  1633. And I don't have to live

  1634. in the illusion

  1635. of my perfect life.

1636. I can live in the reality

  1637. of his perfect compassion

  1638. and bearing the cost

  1639. of my sin

  1640. upon the cross.

1641. I can live in the real world

  1642. because Jesus died

  1643. for me

  1644. bearing the cost

1645. for him to show compassion

  1646. to me

  1647. in the real world.

  1648. If you'll put up

  1649. the final slide.

  1650. See the gospel

  1651. shapes you and me

  1652. to desire

  1653. a healthy conscience.

  1654. and to have

  1655. compassion

  1656. disrupt your anger

1657. for the good of others

  1658. and for the glory

  1659. of the Lord.

  1660. It's not automatic.

  1661. But as the gospel

  1662. shapes you

  1663. as it grips you

  1664. as it molds you

  1665. as it forms you

1666. as you think upon it

  1667. it will desire you

  1668. to have

  1669. a better sense

  1670. of right and wrong.

  1671. It'll give you

  1672. the sense of security

  1673. to look at

  1674. what's actually

  1675. right and wrong

  1676. without having to worry

  1677. that if I actually

  1678. acknowledge that

  1679. this is wrong

  1680. I have to say

  1681. that I did wrong

  1682. for a long time

  1683. and that's really

  1684. hard for us

  1685. but as the gospel

  1686. grips me

  1687. and shapes me

  1688. as it becomes

  1689. the air I breathe

  1690. and that on which

  1691. I stand

  1692. by which I understand

  1693. my identity

  1694. my past

  1695. my present

  1696. and my future

  1697. as that becomes

  1698. more real to me

  1699. who Jesus is

  1700. and what he did

1701. for me upon the cross

  1702. there is the possibility

  1703. for me to look

  1704. at right and wrong

  1705. in a way

  1706. that does not

  1707. threaten my identity

  1708. and I can say

  1709. you know what

  1710. that's wrong

  1711. and that has

  1712. characterized me

  1713. for the last

1714. 20 years of my life

  1715. but it's wrong

  1716. and as my moral

  1717. order becomes

  1718. more healed

  1719. becomes healthy

  1720. and my conscience

  1721. becomes healthy

  1722. that will mean

  1723. my anger

  1724. becomes more healthy

  1725. but the gospel

  1726. does more than that

  1727. the gospel

  1728. shapes you

  1729. to desire

  1730. a healthy conscience

  1731. and to have

  1732. compassion

  1733. disrupt your anger

  1734. for the good

  1735. of others

  1736. and for the glory

  1737. of the Lord

  1738. I am a recipient

  1739. of compassion

  1740. a very deep

  1741. and total

  1742. and complete

  1743. compassion

  1744. that frees me

  1745. to begin

  1746. to live

  1747. eternal life

  1748. and if I have

  1749. known such

  1750. compassion

  1751. maybe I need

  1752. to show compassion

  1753. in this case

  1754. and I can call

  1755. out to the Lord

  1756. for what it's

  1757. going to mean

  1758. in terms of

  1759. forsaking revenge

  1760. for forsaking

  1761. what I might

  1762. like to do

  1763. in terms of

  1764. slander

  1765. or gossip

  1766. or hatred

  1767. or punching

  1768. or vengeance

  1769. or all of those

  1770. things

  1771. and I need to

  1772. swallow that

  1773. and I might

  1774. have to call

  1775. out to the Lord

  1776. Lord I think

  1777. you're calling

  1778. me to show

  1779. compassion

  1780. and that's a cost

  1781. I know you

  1782. showed compassion

  1783. for me

  1784. I don't know

  1785. how to bear

  1786. but Lord

  1787. I ask

  1788. I just

  1789. I know

  1790. that you are

  1791. calling me

  1792. for compassion

  1793. in this particular

  1794. case

  1795. Lord

  1796. I come to you

  1797. help me

  1798. to bear

  1799. the cost

  1800. to show

  1801. compassion

  1802. to this person

  1803. for their

  1804. true good

  1805. and your

  1806. great glory

  1807. let's stand

  1808. and let's

  1809. just pray

  1810. Father we

  1811. are so

  1812. grateful

  1813. that your

  1814. just anger

  1815. at the wrong

  1816. that each

  1817. one of us

  1818. has done

  1819. not that it

  1820. was disrupted

  1821. Lord but we're

  1822. using that

  1823. language that

  1824. forgiveness

  1825. mercy

  1826. compassion

  1827. your forgiveness

  1828. is perfect

  1829. your mercy

  1830. is perfect

  1831. your grace

  1832. is unfailing

  1833. your compassion

  1834. is perfect

  1835. as is your

  1836. justice

  1837. and that you

  1838. bore the cost

  1839. Father

  1840. without

  1841. injustice

  1842. becoming

  1843. justice

  1844. injustice

  1845. becoming

  1846. injustice

  1847. without

  1848. any of

  1849. that

  1850. happening

  1851. you

  1852. bore

  1853. the cost

  1854. paid

  1855. the price

  1856. to show

  1857. compassion

  1858. to me

  1859. Father

  1860. we are

  1861. so grateful

  1862. grip us

  1863. Father

  1864. with the

  1865. mystery

  1866. and the

  1867. wonder

  1868. of what

  1869. you did

  1870. for us

  1871. on the

  1872. cross

  1873. grip us

  1874. with that

  1875. Father

  1876. that it

  1877. might be

  1878. that upon

  1879. which we

  1880. stand

  1881. that upon

  1882. which covers

  1883. our head

  1884. that upon

  1885. which we

  1886. breathe

  1887. that which

  1888. pushes

  1889. and pulls

  1890. us

  1891. and shapes

  1892. us

  1893. to live

  1894. well

  1895. every day

  1896. with people

  1897. for their

  1898. good

  1899. and your

  1900. great glory

  1901. Father

  1902. we ask

  1903. in Jesus'

  1904. name

  1905. and all

  1906. God's

  1907. people

  1908. said

  1909. Amen
