  1. Father, we thank you that you speak to us through your word.

  2. And Father, it's your word, not ours.

  3. And you have all sorts of different things that you bring into our lives,

  4. each of them different through your word.

  5. And we invite and give you permission, Father,

  6. to bring your word very deeply into our hearts,

  7. the command center of our lives,

  8. that your word would work its mighty power within us

  9. so that we would know how to love you and serve you

  10. in our day and in our age and in our context,

  11. that we would know how to bring you glory

  12. in our families, our friends, our neighborhoods,

  13. in our jobs, in our retirement.

  14. Father, to the very ends of the earth, including missionaries,

  15. Father, bring your word deeply home to us

  16. that we might know how to serve you

  17. and to live in a way that brings you glory and lifts Jesus high.

  18. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus,

  19. your Son and our Savior.

  20. Amen.

  21. Please be seated.

  22. So we begin a new sermon series today.

  23. This is sort of the first Sunday of the summer.

  24. In fact, it's so nice that I'm not here all by myself,

  25. just me and Andrew.

  26. This being a long weekend,

  27. always one of the lowest attended services of the year,

  28. so it's really good you're here

  29. to open God's word on the Lord's Day.

  30. And this 10-week sermon series,

  31. it's going to be called Real Jesus, Real Miracles.

  32. We're going to look at 10 different miracle stories in the Gospels.

  33. We're not going to do any of the miracle stories from the Gospel of John

  34. because those of you who, this is your church home,

  35. you'll know that in the spring,

  36. I finished a long series on John.

  37. So we're not going to look at any of the John miracles,

  38. but we're going to look at a variety of miracles.

  39. And this first one that we're looking at,

  40. I wish I had a flashy beginning.

  41. All I can really do is just share from my heart.

  42. I don't talk about this very much,

  43. but it's a very, very common thing for ministers

  44. that not maybe immediately after the service,

  45. but shortly after the service,

  46. a couple of hours after the service,

  47. we often feel very, very tired and down.

  48. And that feeling tired and feeling down

  49. can last for at least 24 hours.

  50. And scientists, doctors can tell you

  51. that to get up like this,

  52. standing in front of people and speaking

  53. is one of the scariest things for North Americans to do.

  54. And that's what I'm doing for you right now.

  55. And so you produce adrenaline to do this.

  56. And when the body produces adrenaline,

  57. then later on, something comes to lower the adrenaline.

  58. And that often makes you feel just blah, tired.

  59. My poor, long-suffering wife has to put up with me

  60. and not being very energetic or lively

  61. for the rest of the day and into tomorrow.

  62. But this week, I'm used to the fact

  63. that often on Mondays, I don't feel very good.

  64. And I just tell myself, well, tomorrow's Tuesday.

  65. This will go away and tomorrow's Tuesday.

  66. But this week on Tuesday,

  67. I was still feeling pretty down, actually.

  68. And I was walking down Bank Street in Centertown.

  69. And I was walking from where our ministry space was

  70. to a place where I was going to do some work.

  71. And I was pretty down.

  72. And I was just praying about it,

  73. about how down I was.

  74. And it was one of the things,

  75. I don't want to make it sound like I'm more mystical than I am.

  76. I'm not very mystical.

  77. But it was as if the Lord said to me,

  78. George, what is it you're preaching on on Sunday?

  79. And then as I sort of thought about what I was preaching on on Sunday,

  80. this text in Luke,

  81. the Lord used the text in a very powerful way just to encourage me.

  82. And I wish I could do that for you.

  83. I don't know how many of you are discouraged.

  84. I was just discouraged a little bit about how hard it is to be a Christian in today's world.

  85. How we're the away team in today's world.

  86. That's sort of what I was thinking of.

  87. You know what the away team means?

  88. Just think of those Raptor Golden State Warrior games.

  89. And just think of the Golden State Warriors coming into Toronto.

  90. Okay.

  91. Well, we're the Golden State Warriors playing in Toronto.

  92. That's just what it's like now to be a Christian.

  93. The world cheers for the other side, not us.

  94. Standing ovations for the other side, not for us.

  95. And I was just really feeling despondent about it.

  96. But this text, as I just thought about it,

  97. it really lifted my spirits.

  98. Between Somerset and Gladstone,

  99. the Lord did a work on my heart as I thought about this text.

  100. And I don't know what the Lord's going to do in your hearts today

  101. as we look at this text, but let's look at the text.

  102. So it's Luke chapter 5, verses 1 to 11.

    Luke 5:1–11

  103. Luke chapter 5, verses 1 to 11.

    Luke 5:1–11

  104. And this is a nature miracle.

  105. Excuse me, a nature miracle.

  106. And here's how it goes.

  107. Luke chapter 5, verses 1 to 11.

    Luke 5:1–11

  108. So just before I start reading this,

  109. just a little bit for those of you who don't know some of these things.

  110. The guy who's writing this never saw Jesus in the flesh.

  111. And he's not Jewish.

  112. He was a pagan who sometime after the death and resurrection of Jesus,

  113. this pagan doctor, so he was well-educated,

  114. he becomes a Christian.

  115. We're never told how he goes from being a pagan to being a Christian,

  116. but we know that he has gone from being a pagan to being a Christian.

  117. And so one of the things that he does,

  118. if you go back and you read the beginning of Luke

  119. and the beginning of Acts, because he wrote both books as sort of a two-parter,

  120. you'll see that what he said is he wanted to go

  121. and look up all the eyewitness people.

  122. And in a sense, he says, basically,

  123. I went and studied and listened to the eyewitnesses.

  124. And out of listening to the eyewitnesses

  125. and maybe looking at some written documents as well,

  126. I've put together a true story of things that really happened to Jesus.

  127. And that's what Luke has done.

  128. And that's who he is, and that's what he's done.

  129. And he does it because he wants this man, Theophilus,

  130. to know and understand who Jesus is.

  131. So this is part of that process.

  132. It's a book, and it's chapter 5.

  133. There's a lot of chapters in the book,

  134. but this is early on in the book, and it goes like this.

  135. On one occasion, verse 1,

  136. while the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear the word of God,

  137. Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret.

  138. I can't pronounce that very well.

  139. Just pause here for a second.

  140. Just a couple of things which are really interesting about this.

  141. The first one is this thing when he says, on one occasion.

  142. In the original language, it's a bit of a...

  143. What he's saying is, this is something that happened.

  144. He's saying two things by using this phrase.

  145. One of them is, this is something that really happened.

  146. If Luke was here and was doing it for you,

  147. he'd say, if there was ever an ability to have a time machine,

  148. and you folks went in a time machine, and you could program it,

  149. you could go back in your time machine,

  150. and you could watch this actually happen.

  151. So it's a phrase that talks about it actually.

  152. It's history.

  153. This really happened.

  154. The second thing is, he's trying to tell us

  155. that he's not giving us a chronological thing.

  156. He's...

  157. It would be a little bit if you went to a...

  158. It's a little bit like...

  159. Think about it as you go to a funeral,

  160. a memorial service,

  161. and somebody gets up to speak about their mom,

  162. or whatever, who died.

  163. And often, when people at a memorial service,

  164. when they get up and talk about their mom,

  165. they don't do a strict chronology.

  166. They'll tell you this story,

  167. then they'll tell you this story,

  168. then they'll tell you this story,

  169. and then they'll tell you this story,

  170. and some of them go on way too long.

  171. But afterwards, they might not...

  172. If you actually said,

  173. sorry, did those stories all happen in that order?

  174. They said, no, no, no, no.

  175. They didn't happen in that order.

  176. I just thought they were all interesting stories.

  177. I told them in a certain order for your interest,

  178. but I wasn't actually telling you the chronology.

  179. And what Luke says,

  180. when he says on one occasion,

  181. he's telling you the same thing.

  182. He's saying, I'm going to tell you a true story,

  183. but it doesn't necessarily just immediately follow

  184. after the last bit that I told you.

  185. Luke does this all the way through his gospel.

  186. And it drives 2019 Christians nuts,

  187. because one of the things that we like,

  188. that they didn't really care about,

  189. was chronology.

  190. We love chronologies.

  191. We love it if there's a blog or a tweet or something

  192. which can show a timeline.

  193. You hear something happen in the news,

  194. some shootings or something.

  195. We love things like that, all the timeline.

  196. Luke didn't care about that.

  197. He's telling you about Jesus.

  198. He's in a sense,

  199. well, he's just telling you about Jesus.

  200. And the stories are all true,

  201. but they're not necessarily in a chronology.

  202. Drives people like us nuts.

  203. The other thing is,

  204. just two other things about this story

  205. to take a long thing.

  206. It's very interesting.

  207. Look again at what it says here.

  208. They press in on him to hear the word of God.

  209. There's a lot of important Bible doctrine,

  210. which is just sort of,

  211. it peaks its head up every once in a while.

  212. And if you're not paying attention,

  213. you don't notice that it's just peaked its head up

  214. and then went underneath.

  215. And if you add up all the times it peaks up,

  216. you realize that it's a really important doctrine,

  217. but it's just a doctrine that peaks up.

  218. And what Luke is saying here is,

  219. when you heard Jesus speak,

  220. you were hearing God speak.

  221. That's what Luke is saying.

  222. If you had been there that day,

  223. and what people understood is that

  224. when they're listening to Jesus,

  225. they're hearing God speak.

  226. It's a huge claim,

  227. but it just peaks itself up,

  228. goes back underneath.

  229. And this all happens,

  230. the Gennesaret,

  231. it's another name for Galilee.

  232. So verse two,

  233. that's just how it begins.

  234. And now the story goes in.

  235. Verse two,

  236. and Jesus saw two boats by the lake,

  237. but the fishermen had gone out of them

  238. and were washing their nets.

  239. Getting into one of the boats,

  240. which was Simon's,

  241. Jesus asked him to put out a little from the land.

  242. And then Jesus sat down

  243. and taught the people from the boat.

  244. And just sort of pause here for a second.

  245. Simon is better known to most people as Peter.

  246. Jesus changes Peter's name later on in the story,

  247. but originally his name was Simon,

  248. a common Jewish name.

  249. And Simon is a commercial fisherman.

  250. So he's not just a guy going out there,

  251. casting a line,

  252. hoping to catch some fish

  253. so he can have some fish for breakfast.

  254. He's a commercial fisherman.

  255. In those days,

  256. commercial fishermen worked all night

  257. so that in the morning,

  258. the fish would be fresh

  259. that they could sell at the market to make a living.

  260. So Simon's a commercial fisherman.

  261. He would have been fishing with a net,

  262. not a line and a lure.

  263. And that's what he's been doing all night.

  264. And they're washing their nets.

  265. Their work day is over, so to speak.

  266. They're preparing to go home.

  267. And Jesus asked if they could just move out a little bit

  268. so he has a bit of distance to speak.

  269. Verse 4.

  270. And when he had finished speaking,

  271. that's Jesus,

  272. he said to Simon,

  273. put out into the deep

  274. and let down your nets for a catch.

  275. And Simon answered,

  276. Master, we toiled all night and took nothing.

  277. But at your word,

  278. I will let down the nets.

  279. And when they had done this,

  280. they enclosed a large number of fish

  281. and their nets were breaking.

  282. They signaled to their partners in the other boat

  283. to come and help them.

  284. And they came and filled both the boats

  285. so that they began to sink.

  286. Now just sort of pause here for a second.

  287. It's not as obvious in English.

  288. It's obvious if you think about it in a second

  289. when you see what Peter's going to say in a moment,

  290. what Simon's going to say in a moment.

  291. But the image here is

  292. as if the fish are swimming into the net.

  293. It's as if, you know,

  294. if you had Polaroid sunglasses

  295. and you could be looking at the water,

  296. it's as if you could see a fish coming from over there

  297. to get into the net.

  298. And another fish from over there

  299. coming to get into the net.

  300. And another fish from over there

  301. coming to get into the net.

  302. And these fishermen,

  303. they put down their net,

  304. they try to bring them back,

  305. and the fish are still swimming into the net.

  306. And they're swimming into the net

  307. and swimming into the net

  308. and they're jumping into the net

  309. and they're trying to pull the net into the boat

  310. and the fish are still coming

  311. and they call for the other boat.

  312. And the other boat comes

  313. and starts to try to help them

  314. and maybe they're also throwing in their net at first

  315. because they don't really know what they're doing.

  316. But the fish are going into that

  317. and the fish are going into that

  318. and that's the image which is going on.

  319. It's shocking.

  320. It's shocking to these fishermen.

  321. And we see that in terms of how Peter reacts.

  322. It's a very, very, very powerful graphic image.

  323. So you have to, you know,

  324. you just imagine they're bringing these nets

  325. into this flat-bottom boat

  326. and as they're bringing them in,

  327. the fish are flopping around

  328. and Jesus is in the boat

  329. with the fish all flopping around

  330. and the fish swimming to get into the net

  331. to get into the boat.

  332. And Simon is seeing this net.

  333. It's just pulling the whole boat over

  334. and there are fish flopping all over the place.

  335. And what does Peter do?

  336. Look at verse 8.

  337. But when Peter, Simon Peter saw it,

  338. he fell down at Jesus' knees.

  339. So if you're the type of person

  340. who likes to picture things,

  341. you picture Peter might even be kneeling

  342. on a couple of fish.

  343. They'd squish a way out of him,

  344. but he just kneels right now

  345. in the midst of all those fish

  346. flopping around.

  347. And he just goes on his knees.

  348. He falls down

  349. and he says to Jesus,

  350. verse 8,

  351. Depart from me,

  352. for I am a sinful man,

  353. O Lord.

  354. For he and all who were with him

  355. were astonished at the catch of fish

  356. that they had taken.

  357. And so also were James and John,

  358. son of Zebedee,

  359. who were partners with Simon.

  360. They're just completely

  361. and utterly shocked.

  362. We're going to talk in a moment

  363. about Peter's puzzling reply.

  364. Why?

  365. Like, why is it that Peter says

  366. something like,

  367. Depart from me,

  368. for I am a sinful man?

  369. That's a very puzzling thing to say

  370. if you think about it.

  371. Like, it's not something

  372. that we think a Canadian would say

  373. if that same thing was happening to us.

  374. Not the average Canadian.

  375. At least we don't think

  376. that's how a Canadian would respond.

  377. And so what does Jesus say?

  378. Does Jesus say,

  379. Come on, Peter, get up.

  380. Come on, get up.

  381. Come on, I'm just a guy.

  382. Get up, you know?

  383. He doesn't say something like that.

  384. What does Jesus say?

  385. Says the last part of verse 10.

  386. And Jesus said to Simon,

  387. Do not be afraid.

  388. From now on,

  389. you will be catching men.

  390. And when they had brought

  391. their boats to land,

  392. they left everything

  393. and followed Jesus.

  394. And just that little thing

  395. that Jesus says,

  396. Do not be afraid.

  397. From now on,

  398. you will be catching men.

  399. In the original language,

  400. that word catching

  401. is a very rare word

  402. in the New Testament.

  403. It's only used two times.

  404. And the significance

  405. of the word is

  406. it means catching alive.

  407. Not catching to kill,

  408. but catching alive.

  409. And it only occurs

  410. one other time

  411. in the New Testament.

  412. So he says,

  413. Do not be afraid.

  414. From now on,

  415. you will be catching men.

  416. And when they had brought

  417. their boats to land,

  418. they left everything

  419. and followed him.

  420. Now what to think about this.

  421. You know,

  422. when I was a kid,

  423. I loved comic books.

  424. And where we grew up,

  425. I mean,

  426. not only did I get my allowance,

  427. but where we grew up,

  428. they were building developments

  429. all around.

  430. And my friends and I

  431. would go after the working day

  432. was over.

  433. And we'd go and find Coke bottles

  434. because back then

  435. when you wanted to drink pop,

  436. it had to be in a bottle.

  437. They didn't have cans.

  438. That's how old I am.

  439. I was a kid

  440. when they invented cans,

  441. actually.

  442. That's how old I am.

  443. The wheel was just a couple

  444. of weeks before I was born.

  445. Fire the day after I was born.

  446. But they still had to drink Coke

  447. and stuff like that

  448. in bottles.

  449. And so me and my friends,

  450. we would go

  451. and go around the work sites

  452. looking for a bottle

  453. so we could take them

  454. to a store,

  455. collect the deposit

  456. because they were deposit,

  457. two cents

  458. to bring a bottle back.

  459. And I won't bore you

  460. about how much you could get

  461. for two cents

  462. in those days.

  463. Ask me after the service.

  464. But for six bottles,

  465. I could buy a comic book.

  466. And that's the main thing I did.

  467. And Silver Surfer,

  468. the X-Men,

  469. believe it or not,

  470. my top favorite comic book character

  471. was the Black Panther.

  472. But I also really liked Spider-Man,

  473. the X-Men,

  474. and the Silver Surfer.

  475. And I loved comic books.

  476. And when I went to university,

  477. and actually when I was

  478. in high school as well,

  479. if we were to have,

  480. if I was to have read a text

  481. like this to my non-Christian friends,

  482. we'd get into a big argument

  483. about how a miracle

  484. could possibly happen

  485. because that used to be

  486. a big thing for lots of people.

  487. But I have a feeling

  488. that if I read this

  489. to my barista friends

  490. who are non-Christians,

  491. not a single one of them

  492. would ask the question

  493. about how a miracle

  494. could happen

  495. because we're used

  496. to Harry Potter.

  497. We're used to the fact

  498. that Dr. X

  499. can just freeze everybody.

  500. He could freeze.

  501. It wouldn't be beyond belief

  502. that Dr. X

  503. could just make fish

  504. to go into a particular net.

  505. Aquaman can control fish.

  506. Wonder Woman can control animals.

  507. In Star Wars,

  508. Luke Skywalker

  509. could probably get fish

  510. to do things.

  511. He can do that

  512. to the bad guys.

  513. And so when I was in university,

  514. something like this miracle story

  515. would be a problem,

  516. but it's not a problem

  517. often for people today.

  518. They just look at it

  519. and say,

  520. well, that's a pretty cool thing.

  521. But here's the thing

  522. to try to make it

  523. a little bit less cool,

  524. to look at the story

  525. because it's not just

  526. an early Marvel comic book.

  527. I know Aquaman

  528. and Wonder Woman were DC.

  529. It's not an early comic book.

  530. It's something very different

  531. that's going on here.

  532. If you could put up

  533. the first point, Andrew,

  534. that would be very helpful.

  535. This is a true story

  536. about Jesus

  537. and a real miracle.

  538. This is a true story

  539. about Jesus

  540. and a real miracle.

  541. Now, some of you might say,

  542. like I'm sure

  543. if I was to say this

  544. to some of my barista friends

  545. and others

  546. that I've met in coffee shops,

  547. that I can well picture

  548. some of them

  549. would just mock me openly

  550. and say that

  551. this is all just invented.

  552. In fact, George,

  553. your comic book analogy

  554. is perfect.

  555. It's just as real

  556. as Dr. X is real

  557. or Wolverine is real.

  558. Wouldn't it be cool

  559. if Wolverine was real?

  560. But that's an aside.

  561. He's my favorite guy.

  562. Anyway,

  563. amongst those superheroes.

  564. That says something

  565. about my personality

  566. that he would be my favorite.

  567. But, you know,

  568. lots of people

  569. would still just say,

  570. George, a story like this,

  571. it's not a true story

  572. and it's not a real miracle.

  573. And just because

  574. it's in the Bible,

  575. are you saying

  576. that just because

  577. it's in the Bible

  578. that we should believe it?

  579. And I'm saying

  580. yes and no to that.

  581. Yes and no.

  582. For Christians, yes.

  583. For Christians, yes.

  584. If it's in the Bible,

  585. we believe it.

  586. That's what Christians

  587. are supposed to do.

  588. Jesus believed the Bible

  589. and we should believe him.

  590. But for non-Christians,

  591. no, I'm not obviously

  592. saying that,

  593. that just because

  594. it's in the Bible

  595. you have to believe it.

  596. But, but, but,

  597. at least let me

  598. have a conversation with you

  599. about what the Bible

  600. is claiming.

  601. Because beyond the fact

  602. that it's a Bible,

  603. this is something

  604. that was probably written

  605. before the year 70

  606. by a pagan

  607. who was a doctor

  608. who became a Christian.

  609. And he probably

  610. became a Christian

  611. because whether directly

  612. through him talking

  613. to eyewitnesses

  614. or somebody who was

  615. telling him what eyewitnesses

  616. said,

  617. he heard about Jesus

  618. and Jesus' death

  619. on the cross

  620. and his resurrection.

  621. And as a result

  622. of hearing about Jesus,

  623. he left being a pagan,

  624. broke with his culture

  625. to become a Christian,

  626. and Luke is claiming

  627. that this actually happened.

  628. Now, you might say

  629. that he's lying.

  630. That's fine.

  631. We can have a conversation

  632. around that.

  633. But let's at least

  634. just grant him

  635. what he's making the claim of.

  636. And the claim is

  637. that what I just read

  638. to you

  639. is a true story

  640. about a man named Jesus

  641. performing a real miracle.

  642. It's not a myth.

  643. It's not a comic book.

  644. It's not a fantasy.

  645. It's not a moral tale.

  646. Luke is claiming

  647. that it happened

  648. in space and time.

  649. And what he's claiming

  650. is that Jesus

  651. willed the fish

  652. into the net.

  653. He didn't pray to God

  654. that God would hear

  655. his prayer and act.

  656. Jesus willed

  657. the fish

  658. into the net.

  659. And the evidence

  660. that Luke gives

  661. is that it's not

  662. a natural process.

  663. It shocked

  664. people who'd been

  665. making their living

  666. fishing

  667. for years and years

  668. and years

  669. who grew up

  670. by the Sea of Galilee.

  671. It shocked them.

  672. That it's not

  673. a natural occurrence

  674. that fish would come

  675. swimming

  676. into the net

  677. to be caught.

  678. It shocked them.

  679. And that's what Luke

  680. is claiming.

  681. He's claiming

  682. that it's

  683. not a natural process,

  684. that it's something

  685. that natural processes

  686. can't account for.

  687. Now here there's

  688. a bit of an aside.

  689. You know,

  690. it's really interesting

  691. that superheroes

  692. and Harry Potter

  693. are so popular

  694. in our day and age.

  695. Like it really is.

  696. I think it shows

  697. something about

  698. what we want

  699. in our culture.

  700. I have a,

  701. I was talking

  702. to a person

  703. the other day

  704. and I don't know

  705. how it came up.

  706. It came up about

  707. human origins

  708. and evolution.

  709. And people

  710. who aren't Christians,

  711. they often like

  712. to bring up

  713. evolution with me

  714. because they think

  715. I'm going to become

  716. very red in the face

  717. and embarrassed

  718. and start to go

  719. like this

  720. and try to

  721. change the topic.

  722. But amongst other things

  723. what I said to her

  724. was I said this.

  725. I said,

  726. how is it that you believe

  727. she's really big

  728. in social justice?

  729. Really, really, really,

  730. really big

  731. in social justice?

  732. I said,

  733. how is it that you believe

  734. that everything

  735. that came to be

  736. is a result

  737. of the strong

  738. eating the weak

  739. but you think

  740. that we should

  741. love one another?

  742. If that's in fact

  743. the story

  744. about how all things

  745. came to be

  746. that the strong

  747. eat the weak

  748. and the weak die

  749. and the strong live,

  750. if that's actually

  751. how all things

  752. came to be,

  753. how on earth

  754. could you believe

  755. that it's important

  756. that you love

  757. one another?

  758. That doesn't fit at all.

  759. And I think

  760. what we're seeing

  761. in our culture

  762. is this.

  763. On one hand,

  764. there's still

  765. a very strong

  766. belief in science

  767. that everything

  768. is a result

  769. of cause and effect

  770. and that evolution

  771. is true.

  772. It must be true

  773. because our high school

  774. science teachers

  775. taught us

  776. that it's true

  777. and many of the

  778. biology teachers

  779. in university,

  780. if you've taken

  781. any biology,

  782. and it's definitely

  783. the case.

  784. I think I told you

  785. a couple of weeks ago

  786. how,

  787. this is about a year ago,

  788. a CBC cameraman

  789. stopped me

  790. on a glorious summer day

  791. when I was out

  792. for a run along

  793. the canal

  794. and there'd been

  795. some study

  796. that middle-aged guys

  797. like me who ran

  798. were less likely

  799. to have some type

  800. of health problem

  801. and he asked me

  802. if I'd heard of the study

  803. and I said I hadn't heard

  804. and I paused and said

  805. but that makes sense

  806. because God probably

  807. designed us

  808. in such a way

  809. that if you do

  810. something like exercise

  811. it's going to mean

  812. other bad things

  813. don't happen

  814. and it was,

  815. it was a deer

  816. in a headlight moment

  817. for him

  818. because I think

  819. the last thing

  820. he'd ever met

  821. was somebody

  822. who talked about

  823. God creating

  824. human beings

  825. in all other life

  826. and he went

  827. blah, blah, blah, blah

  828. and then he tried

  829. to get me

  830. to backtrack

  831. and I said no, no,

  832. no, no, I'm not

  833. just saying

  834. it's a result

  835. of evolution

  836. I think God

  837. designed us

  838. in such a way

  839. so that if we do

  840. things that are healthy

  841. it has other,

  842. anyway, I'm sure

  843. I didn't make

  844. the clip on it

  845. but in our culture

  846. on one hand

  847. we want to believe

  848. that it's all

  849. a result of just

  850. of time and chance

  851. and naturalistic laws

  852. but on the other hand

  853. there's something

  854. within us

  855. that rebels against it

  856. because the fact

  857. of the matter is

  858. is that in comic books

  859. Dr. X

  860. is obviously

  861. a fantasy

  862. Wonder Woman

  863. is a fantasy

  864. Wolverine

  865. is a fantasy

  866. people who have

  867. these supernatural

  868. type powers

  869. and these unbelievable

  870. powers

  871. there's a fantasy

  872. yet on what

  873. so we

  874. I think our culture

  875. there's this

  876. double motion

  877. that's going on

  878. on one hand

  879. we believe in evolution

  880. and we believe in science

  881. on the other hand

  882. we believe in

  883. we want to believe

  884. in something like

  885. a Harry Potter universe

  886. and we want to believe

  887. in something like

  888. a Luke Skywalker world

  889. where there's something

  890. beyond just the physical

  891. and the material

  892. we want to believe

  893. in something like

  894. Dr. X

  895. but these are

  896. like two separate

  897. realities

  898. that don't connect

  899. at all

  900. but in the Bible

  901. they do

  902. in the Bible

  903. they do

  904. the Bible

  905. they do

  906. in a very

  907. very powerful way

  908. and

  909. and only the Bible

  910. communicates this

  911. in a way

  912. that actually

  913. makes sense

  914. because you see

  915. at the end of the day

  916. the Bible says

  917. that all things

  918. came to be

  919. it's not

  920. not because of a what

  921. matter and energy

  922. and laws of motion

  923. and laws of nature

  924. but a who

  925. that our world

  926. depends upon

  927. something outside

  928. of the world

  929. for our world

  930. to exist

  931. our world

  932. depends upon

  933. something outside

  934. of the world

  935. for our world

  936. to exist

  937. and that's what

  938. we see so

  939. powerfully here

  940. in the story

  941. can you put up

  942. the next point

  943. Andrew

  944. the creator

  945. has invaded

  946. his creation

  947. to begin

  948. to set things

  949. right

  950. and liberate

  951. his fallen

  952. image bearers

  953. the creator

  954. has invaded

  955. his creation

  956. to begin

  957. to set

  958. things right

  959. and liberate

  960. his fallen

  961. image bearers

  962. the reason

  963. that science

  964. developed

  965. in a Christian

  966. world view

  967. it isn't that

  968. before

  969. Christianity

  970. there wasn't

  971. cleverness

  972. and it wasn't

  973. it's not that

  974. outside of

  975. like in Islam

  976. and Buddhism

  977. and Hinduism

  978. and Confucianism

  979. cultures

  980. they didn't

  981. invent

  982. individual

  983. things

  984. but science

  985. is something

  986. more than

  987. just being

  988. able to be

  989. clever

  990. and invent

  991. particular

  992. things

  993. at the

  994. heart

  995. of

  996. the heart

  997. of what

  998. why it was

  999. that Christianity

  1000. ended up

  1001. rooting

  1002. that which

  1003. we call

  1004. science

  1005. is because

  1006. that Christianity

  1007. believed in a

  1008. sense that a

  1009. designer

  1010. created all

  1011. things

  1012. and if a

  1013. designer

  1014. created all

  1015. things

  1016. then we

  1017. in a sense

  1018. could reverse

  1019. engineer what

  1020. he did

  1021. to figure out

  1022. how things

  1023. work

  1024. and it

  1025. really is

  1026. in the

  1027. context

  1028. of that

  1029. belief

  1030. you see

  1031. in animism

  1032. things can

  1033. just happen

  1034. in paganism

  1035. things can

  1036. just happen

  1037. you can't

  1038. trust that

  1039. there's any

  1040. type of

  1041. order in

  1042. reality

  1043. because a

  1044. god might

  1045. just decide

  1046. to do

  1047. this or

  1048. that

  1049. in animism

  1050. it might

  1051. be that

  1052. you angered

  1053. the plant

  1054. or you

  1055. angered

  1056. this or

  1057. you angered

  1058. that and

  1059. that's why

  1060. you get

  1061. sick

  1062. there's no

  1063. type of

  1064. order ultimately

  1065. it's chaotic

  1066. and in

  1067. Buddhism and

  1068. Hinduism in

  1069. a sense

  1070. all things

  1071. are one

  1072. to believe

  1073. that things

  1074. are different

  1075. is an

  1076. illusion

  1077. and so

  1078. why do

  1079. you try

  1080. to figure

  1081. out how

  1082. an illusion

  1083. works

  1084. that's

  1085. an illusion

  1086. it's

  1087. an illusion

  1088. to pursue

  1089. that

  1090. and even

  1091. in Islam

  1092. it's not

  1093. so much

  1094. that they

  1095. have a

  1096. doctrine

  1097. of creation

  1098. it's just

  1099. that god

  1100. does this

  1101. and god

  1102. does this

  1103. and god

  1104. does this

  1105. it's almost

  1106. like a

  1107. pagan god

  1108. but made

  1109. big with

  1110. no other

  1111. gods

  1112. but only

  1113. in

  1114. Christianity

  1115. is there

  1116. this

  1117. sense

  1118. that god

  1119. has created

  1120. all things

  1121. he designed

  1122. this world

  1123. to be

  1124. our home

  1125. for us

  1126. to fit

  1127. here

  1128. and he

  1129. designed

  1130. this world

  1131. not only

  1132. for us

  1133. to fit

  1134. here

  1135. but for

  1136. us to

  1137. tend

  1138. the garden

  1139. to care

  1140. for the

  1141. world

  1142. which

  1143. implies

  1144. that there's

  1145. ways for us

  1146. to care

  1147. for the

  1148. world

  1149. to figure

  1150. out how

  1151. the world

  1152. works

  1153. and god

  1154. is not

  1155. just a god

  1156. who made

  1157. things

  1158. and then

  1159. he sort

  1160. of forgot

  1161. about it

  1162. and it's

  1163. just sort

  1164. of running

  1165. and on

  1166. no no

  1167. that god

  1168. is

  1169. they look

  1170. at this

  1171. story

  1172. and how

  1173. Jesus

  1174. can

  1175. the same

  1176. god

  1177. who just

  1178. said

  1179. out of

  1180. nothing

  1181. let there

  1182. be light

  1183. and let

  1184. just there

  1185. to be

  1186. fish

  1187. to exist

  1188. let there

  1189. to be

  1190. birds

  1191. to exist

  1192. the same

  1193. god

  1194. the same

  1195. creator

  1196. who has

  1197. made all

  1198. things

  1199. and sustains

  1200. all things

  1201. he comes

  1202. and enters

  1203. this story

  1204. and the same

  1205. god who can

  1206. say let there

  1207. be fish

  1208. can say let

  1209. the fish

  1210. go to that

  1211. net

  1212. there's no

  1213. contradiction

  1214. to that

  1215. it's the

  1216. creator

  1217. he's entered

  1218. the story

  1219. and we

  1220. understand

  1221. at a very

  1222. very deep

  1223. level

  1224. that on

  1225. one hand

  1226. this world

  1227. really does

  1228. feel sometimes

  1229. like it

  1230. is our

  1231. home

  1232. when you

  1233. have a day

  1234. when the

  1235. temperature

  1236. is perfect

  1237. and you've

  1238. had a really

  1239. nice meal

  1240. and you're

  1241. with your

  1242. friends

  1243. and you're

  1244. just

  1245. you don't

  1246. feel healthy

  1247. because health

  1248. is natural

  1249. you don't

  1250. feel pain

  1251. you don't

  1252. feel unhealthy

  1253. and you

  1254. feel at one

  1255. and the

  1256. sunset is

  1257. beautiful

  1258. and the

  1259. city is

  1260. beautiful

  1261. and everything

  1262. is beautiful

  1263. and you

  1264. just

  1265. this feels

  1266. like home

  1267. the other

  1268. hand

  1269. when we

  1270. look in the

  1271. newspaper

  1272. or go

  1273. online

  1274. and we

  1275. see the

  1276. terrible

  1277. evil

  1278. things that

  1279. are done

  1280. in this

  1281. world

  1282. we realize

  1283. that on

  1284. one level

  1285. sometimes we

  1286. feel like

  1287. this is at

  1288. our home

  1289. on the other

  1290. hand

  1291. it feels

  1292. at times

  1293. as if the

  1294. world is

  1295. not right

  1296. and only

  1297. the Christian

  1298. faith makes

  1299. those two

  1300. experiences

  1301. comprehensible

  1302. and understandable

  1303. God made

  1304. this world

  1305. as our

  1306. home

  1307. and we

  1308. human beings

  1309. have rebelled

  1310. against it

  1311. and brought

  1312. evil and

  1313. destruction

  1314. and disorder

  1315. into this

  1316. world

  1317. and when

  1318. we see

  1319. this story

  1320. it isn't

  1321. just a few

  1322. things on

  1323. a creed

  1324. the

  1325. communication

  1326. that there

  1327. is a

  1328. creator

  1329. who entered

  1330. his creation

  1331. and reveals

  1332. that he is

  1333. the creator

  1334. by doing

  1335. this remarkable

  1336. thing that

  1337. only the

  1338. creator can

  1339. do

  1340. which is

  1341. just to

  1342. order the

  1343. fish around

  1344. merely by

  1345. his will

  1346. the creator

  1347. himself

  1348. has invaded

  1349. his creation

  1350. and we

  1351. fallen human

  1352. beings

  1353. often feel

  1354. threatened

  1355. by the

  1356. invasion of

  1357. the creator

  1358. because we

  1359. feel as if

  1360. this is

  1361. mine

  1362. and so it

  1363. is in our

  1364. culture

  1365. when God

  1366. draws close

  1367. we worry

  1368. about his

  1369. commands around

  1370. sexuality

  1371. and his

  1372. commands around

  1373. money

  1374. and his

  1375. commands

  1376. around forgiveness

  1377. and his

  1378. commands around

  1379. gentleness

  1380. and his

  1381. commands around

  1382. compassion

  1383. and his

  1384. commands around

  1385. mercy

  1386. and his

  1387. commands around

  1388. identity

  1389. and sometimes

  1390. we feel these

  1391. things as a

  1392. threat as if

  1393. this kingdom

  1394. is ours

  1395. but this

  1396. story reveals

  1397. that the

  1398. creator is

  1399. entering his

  1400. creation to

  1401. set things

  1402. right

  1403. we human

  1404. beings in

  1405. Canada

  1406. basically always

  1407. think that

  1408. I'm the

  1409. judge

  1410. I'm the

  1411. emperor

  1412. and God

  1413. whatever God

  1414. pretends to

  1415. be

  1416. he's on

  1417. trial

  1418. and the

  1419. fact of

  1420. the matter

  1421. is things

  1422. are looking

  1423. very bad

  1424. for God

  1425. it looks

  1426. as if

  1427. he's just

  1428. going to

  1429. be condemned

  1430. to being a

  1431. bad God

  1432. a bad idea

  1433. a bad thing

  1434. he's threatening

  1435. he threatens

  1436. my sense of

  1437. identity

  1438. he threatens

  1439. what I want

  1440. to do

  1441. with my

  1442. money

  1443. what I

  1444. want to

  1445. do

  1446. with my

  1447. time

  1448. what I

  1449. want to

  1450. do

  1451. with my

  1452. sexuality

  1453. my time

  1454. my money

  1455. my sexuality

  1456. and he

  1457. threatens that

  1458. but

  1459. this story

  1460. is saying

  1461. that what

  1462. we're seeing

  1463. here in

  1464. Luke is

  1465. more like

  1466. D-Day

  1467. and we

  1468. have fallen

  1469. prey to the

  1470. propaganda as

  1471. if Nazi

  1472. rule is

  1473. natural

  1474. and will be

  1475. forever

  1476. but the

  1477. king himself

  1478. the creator

  1479. himself has

  1480. come into

  1481. his creation

  1482. to begin to

  1483. set all

  1484. things right

  1485. all

  1486. things

  1487. right

  1488. there's

  1489. another

  1490. thing

  1491. which is

  1492. really

  1493. important

  1494. in terms

  1495. of

  1496. how

  1497. he

  1498. sets

  1499. all

  1500. things

  1501. right

  1502. when

  1503. you

  1504. come

  1505. to

  1506. read

  1507. the

  1508. end

  1509. of

  1510. the

  1511. story

  1512. if

  1513. later

  1514. on

  1515. maybe

  1516. as

  1517. part

  1518. of

  1519. your

  1520. project

  1521. for

  1522. the

  1523. summary

  1524. you

  1525. decide

  1526. you're

  1527. just

  1528. going

  1529. to

  1530. sit

  1531. down

  1532. and

  1533. every

  1534. day

  1535. read

  1536. a

  1537. couple

  1538. of

  1539. chapters

  1540. of

  1541. Luke

  1542. and

  1543. you're

  1544. going

  1545. to

  1546. read

  1547. it

  1548. all

  1549. right

  1550. from

  1551. chapter

  1552. one

  1553. and

  1554. you're

  1555. going to

  1556. read

  1557. it

  1558. all

  1559. the

  1560. way

  1561. and

  1562. you're

  1563. going

  1564. to

  1565. come

  1566. eventually

  1567. to

  1568. Luke

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  1569. chapter

  1570. 22

  1571. and

  1572. 23

  1573. where

  1574. Jesus

  1575. is

  1576. caught

  1577. and

  1578. then

  1579. he

  1580. dies

  1581. on

  1582. the

  1583. cross

  1584. and

  1585. the

  1586. resurrection

  1587. one

  1588. of

  1589. the

  1590. things

  1591. we

  1592. need

  1593. to

  1594. do

  1595. is

  1596. we

  1597. have

  1598. to

  1599. realize

  1600. that

  1601. what

  1602. Luke

  1603. is

  1604. doing

  1605. is

  1606. he's

  1607. asking

  1608. you

  1609. to

  1610. remember

  1611. everything

  1612. in

  1613. the

  1614. story

  1615. when

  1616. it

  1617. comes

  1618. to

  1619. that

  1620. time

  1621. of

  1622. the

  1623. crucifixion

  1624. because

  1625. if

  1626. you

  1627. remember

  1628. you

  1629. have

  1630. to

  1631. ask

  1632. yourself

  1633. how

  1634. is

  1635. one

  1636. who

  1637. can

  1638. cause

  1639. the

  1640. fish

  1641. to

  1642. come

  1643. from

  1644. all

  1645. over

  1646. the

  1647. lake

  1648. to

  1649. jump

  1650. into

  1651. the

  1652. net

  1653. how

  1654. can

  1655. one

  1656. like

  1657. that

  1658. die

  1659. upon

  1660. the

  1661. cross

  1662. and

  1663. who

  1664. is

  1665. dying

  1666. upon

  1667. the

  1668. cross

  1669. and

  1670. what

  1671. on

  1672. earth

  1673. is

  1674. going

  1675. on

  1676. if

  1677. Jesus

  1678. is

  1679. dying

  1680. on

  1681. a

  1682. cross

  1683. and

  1684. Luke

  1685. is

  1686. setting

  1687. it

  1688. up

  1689. through

  1690. story

  1691. not

  1692. through

  1693. doctrine

  1694. that

  1695. the

  1696. creator

  1697. has

  1698. invaded

  1699. his

  1700. own

  1701. creation

  1702. to

  1703. begin

  1704. to

  1705. set

  1706. things

  1707. right

  1708. and

  1709. the

  1710. pinnacle

  1711. and

  1712. the

  1713. linchpin

  1714. and

  1715. the

  1716. foundation

  1717. of

  1718. him

  1719. setting

  1720. things

  1721. right

  1722. is

  1723. the

  1724. creator

  1725. dies

  1726. for

  1727. his

  1728. rebellious

  1729. creature

  1730. the

  1731. creator

  1732. dies

  1733. in

  1734. the

  1735. place

  1736. of

  1737. his

  1738. rebellious

  1739. creature

  1740. is

  1741. key

  1742. to

  1743. him

  1744. setting

  1745. things

  1746. right

  1747. the

  1748. one

  1749. who

  1750. controls

  1751. nature

  1752. dies

  1753. on

  1754. the

  1755. cross

  1756. Peter

  1757. says

  1758. depart

  1759. from

  1760. me

  1761. for

  1762. I'm

  1763. a

  1764. sinful

  1765. man

  1766. and

  1767. Jesus

  1768. doesn't

  1769. say

  1770. yes

  1771. you

  1772. disgust

  1773. me

  1774. you

  1775. are

  1776. sinful

  1777. I

  1778. hate

  1779. you

  1780. no

  1781. he

  1782. says

  1783. in

  1784. such a

  1785. way

  1786. that

  1787. Peter

  1788. knows

  1789. that

  1790. it's

  1791. proper

  1792. that

  1793. he

  1794. follows

  1795. him

  1796. he

  1797. says

  1798. he

  1799. says

  1800. you

  1801. are

  1802. going

  1803. to

  1804. be

  1805. catching

  1806. men

  1807. catching

  1808. men

  1809. in

  1810. such

  1811. a

  1812. way

  1813. that

  1814. they

  1815. live

  1816. that

  1817. they

  1818. are

  1819. delivered

  1820. and

  1821. live

  1822. Peter

  1823. knows

  1824. he

  1825. has

  1826. to

  1827. follow

  1828. him

  1829. just

  1830. two

  1831. final

  1832. things

  1833. very

  1834. briefly

  1835. enclosed

  1836. if you

  1837. could

  1838. put up

  1839. the

  1840. third

  1841. point

  1842. to

  1843. follow

  1844. Jesus

  1845. means

  1846. doing

  1847. what

  1848. he

  1849. tells

  1850. you

  1851. to

  1852. do

  1853. and

  1854. also

  1855. to

  1856. pardon

  1857. me

  1858. I

  1859. had

  1860. to

  1861. bring

  1862. in

  1863. something

  1864. from

  1865. the

  1866. old

  1867. book

  1868. of

  1869. common

  1870. prayer

  1871. do

  1872. your

  1873. meat

  1874. right

  1875. and

  1876. bound

  1877. in

  1878. duty

  1879. old

  1880. English

  1881. that's

  1882. what's

  1883. that's

  1884. one of

  1885. the

  1886. things

  1887. which

  1888. is

  1889. so

  1890. powerfully

  1891. but

  1892. by

  1893. the

  1894. way

  1895. you

  1896. know

  1897. the

  1898. thing

  1899. that

  1900. encouraged

  1901. me

  1902. this

  1903. week

  1904. is

  1905. this

  1906. I'm

  1907. the

  1908. away

  1909. team

  1910. and

  1911. I

  1912. wish

  1913. I

  1914. had

  1915. more

  1916. fruitfulness

  1917. in

  1918. my

  1919. evangelism

  1920. than

  1921. I

  1922. do

  1923. but

  1924. at

  1925. the

  1926. end

  1927. of

  1928. the

  1929. day

  1930. the

  1931. creator

  1932. has

  1933. invaded

  1934. his

  1935. creation

  1936. and

  1937. the

  1938. one

  1939. who

  1940. creates

  1941. and

  1942. sustains

  1943. all

  1944. that

  1945. is

  1946. around

  1947. me

  1948. has

  1949. asked

  1950. me

  1951. unworthy

  1952. as

  1953. I

  1954. am

  1955. to

  1956. follow

  1957. him

  1958. and

  1959. to

  1960. proclaim

  1961. who

  1962. he

  1963. is

  1964. to

  1965. his

  1966. glory

  1967. and

  1968. the

  1969. Lord

  1970. brings

  1971. the

  1972. fish

  1973. that's

  1974. what

  1975. encouraged

  1976. me

  1977. the

  1978. creator

  1979. of all

  1980. things

  1981. invaded

  1982. this

  1983. world

  1984. and

  1985. died

  1986. for

  1987. me

  1988. and

  1989. he

  1990. asks

  1991. me

  1992. to

  1993. follow

  1994. him

  1995. encourage

  1996. me

  1997. and

  1998. in

  1999. this

  2000. story

  2001. you

  2002. see

  2003. this

  2004. wonderful

  2005. thing

  2006. on

  2007. one

  2008. hand

  2009. you

  2010. see

  2011. this

  2012. element

  2013. of

  2014. discipleship

  2015. which

  2016. is

  2017. if

  2018. Jesus

  2019. tells

  2020. us

  2021. to

  2022. do

  2023. something

  2024. we

  2025. have

  2026. to

  2027. do

  2028. it

  2029. now

  2030. I'm

  2031. not

  2032. saying

  2033. that

  2034. we

  2035. do

  2036. it

  2037. I'm

  2038. not

  2039. saying

  2040. we

  2041. do

  2042. it

  2043. with

  2044. a

  2045. smile

  2046. because

  2047. a lot

  2048. of

  2049. times

  2050. really

  2051. you

  2052. mean

  2053. I

  2054. can't

  2055. I

  2056. have

  2057. to

  2058. do

  2059. this

  2060. I

  2061. can't

  2062. do

  2063. this

  2064. with

  2065. my

  2066. sexuality

  2067. I

  2068. have

  2069. to

  2070. do

  2071. this

  2072. really

  2073. this

  2074. is

  2075. wrong

  2076. everybody

  2077. around

  2078. me

  2079. says

  2080. it's

  2081. right

  2082. really

  2083. you

  2084. know

  2085. we

  2086. can

  2087. have

  2088. these

  2089. conversations

  2090. with

  2091. God

  2092. but

  2093. at the

  2094. end

  2095. of

  2096. the

  2097. day

  2098. a

  2099. person

  2100. who

  2101. follows

  2102. Jesus

  2103. means

  2104. that

  2105. you

  2106. follow

  2107. Jesus

  2108. and

  2109. that

  2110. involves

  2111. first

  2112. of

  2113. all

  2114. you

  2115. do

  2116. what

  2117. he

  2118. says

  2119. but

  2120. the

  2121. second

  2122. thing

  2123. is

  2124. Jesus

  2125. never

  2126. actually

  2127. says

  2128. in

  2129. this

  2130. story

  2131. follow

  2132. me

  2133. does

  2134. he

  2135. but

  2136. Peter

  2137. knowing

  2138. Jesus

  2139. realizes

  2140. that

  2141. it

  2142. is

  2143. his

  2144. meat

  2145. right

  2146. and

  2147. bound

  2148. and

  2149. duty

  2150. some

  2151. things

  2152. follow

  2153. naturally

  2154. from

  2155. knowing

  2156. Jesus

  2157. that's

  2158. what

  2159. meat

  2160. right

  2161. and

  2162. bound

  2163. and

  2164. duty

  2165. later

  2166. on

  2167. the

  2168. communion

  2169. I

  2170. think

  2171. we

  2172. don't

  2173. use

  2174. the

  2175. old

  2176. language

  2177. of

  2178. it's

  2179. meat

  2180. right

  2181. and

  2182. our

  2183. bound

  2184. and

  2185. duty

  2186. I

  2187. think

  2188. it's

  2189. right

  2190. and

  2191. fitting

  2192. and

  2193. our

  2194. true

  2195. duty

  2196. to

  2197. do

  2198. this

  2199. it's

  2200. language

  2201. that

  2202. describes

  2203. how

  2204. in

  2205. a

  2206. created

  2207. world

  2208. there

  2209. are

  2210. certain

  2211. things

  2212. that

  2213. just

  2214. are

  2215. natural

  2216. that

  2217. just

  2218. follow

  2219. and

  2220. so

  2221. the

  2222. natural

  2223. thing

  2224. that

  2225. follows

  2226. from

  2227. Jesus

  2228. and

  2229. from

  2230. this

  2231. miracle

  2232. that

  2233. Peter

  2234. just

  2235. understands

  2236. not

  2237. as a

  2238. result

  2239. of

  2240. a

  2241. command

  2242. it

  2243. fits

  2244. it's

  2245. right

  2246. it's

  2247. the

  2248. appropriate

  2249. thing

  2250. that

  2251. if

  2252. the

  2253. creator

  2254. of

  2255. all

  2256. things

  2257. has

  2258. entered

  2259. his

  2260. creation

  2261. to

  2262. begin

  2263. to

  2264. make

  2265. things

  2266. right

  2267. and

  2268. he's

  2269. come

  2270. on

  2271. your

  2272. boat

  2273. and

  2274. done

  2275. this

  2276. miracle

  2277. that

  2278. the

  2279. meat

  2280. right

  2281. and

  2282. bound

  2283. and

  2284. duty

  2285. thing

  2286. that

  2287. you

  2288. do

  2289. is

  2290. you

  2291. follow

  2292. him

  2293. meat

  2294. right

  2295. and

  2296. bound

  2297. and

  2298. duty

  2299. it's

  2300. fitting

  2301. it's

  2302. right

  2303. it's

  2304. a

  2305. good

  2306. duty

  2307. can

  2308. you

  2309. put

  2310. up

  2311. the

  2312. last

  2313. point

  2314. Andrew

  2315. I

  2316. talked

  2317. about

  2318. this

  2319. a

  2320. little

  2321. bit

  2322. in

  2323. my

  2324. blog

  2325. knowing

  2326. Jesus

  2327. leads

  2328. me

  2329. to

  2330. leave

  2331. every

  2332. idol

  2333. behind

  2334. and

  2335. follow

  2336. him

  2337. you

  2338. know

  2339. the

  2340. thing

  2341. about

  2342. literally

  2343. leaving

  2344. all

  2345. of

  2346. your

  2347. net

  2348. and

  2349. all

  2350. the

  2351. fish

  2352. sometimes

  2353. that

  2354. literally

  2355. means

  2356. what

  2357. it

  2358. will

  2359. be

  2360. to

  2361. be

  2362. a

  2363. Christian

  2364. if

  2365. you

  2366. when

  2367. next

  2368. time

  2369. we

  2370. have

  2371. Aaron

  2372. I

  2373. me

  2374. and

  2375. his

  2376. ministry

  2377. to

  2378. the

  2379. Jewish

  2380. people

  2381. give

  2382. your

  2383. life

  2384. to

  2385. Jesus

  2386. it

  2387. will

  2388. mean

  2389. you

  2390. are

  2391. disowned

  2392. and

  2393. you

  2394. don't

  2395. have

  2396. a

  2397. place

  2398. to

  2399. live

  2400. and

  2401. one

  2402. of

  2403. the

  2404. things

  2405. that

  2406. Christians

  2407. have

  2408. to

  2409. do

  2410. in

  2411. a

  2412. place

  2413. like

  2414. Israel

  2415. is

  2416. actually

  2417. come up

  2418. with

  2419. hospitality

  2420. and

  2421. houses

  2422. so

  2423. that

  2424. when

  2425. the

  2426. ultra

  2427. Orthodox

  2428. give

  2429. their

  2430. lives

  2431. to

  2432. Jesus

  2433. they

  2434. actually

  2435. have

  2436. a

  2437. place

  2438. to

  2439. live

  2440. in

  2441. Iran

  2442. if

  2443. a

  2444. person

  2445. becomes

  2446. a

  2447. Christian

  2448. it

  2449. becomes

  2450. known

  2451. in

  2452. parts

  2453. of

  2454. and

  2455. it

  2456. might

  2457. be

  2458. in

  2459. our

  2460. day

  2461. and

  2462. age

  2463. that

  2464. we

  2465. will

  2466. lose

  2467. promotions

  2468. or

  2469. some

  2470. other

  2471. types

  2472. of

  2473. things

  2474. when

  2475. people

  2476. discover

  2477. that

  2478. we've

  2479. given

  2480. our

  2481. lives

  2482. to

  2483. Jesus

  2484. and

  2485. that

  2486. he

  2487. is

  2488. our

  2489. Savior

  2490. and

  2491. Lord

  2492. and

  2493. we

  2494. have

  2495. to

  2496. be

  2497. prepared

  2498. for

  2499. that

  2500. but

  2501. more

  2502. important

  2503. the

  2504. overall

  2505. teaching

  2506. of the

  2507. thing

  2508. is

  2509. what

  2510. is

  2511. an

  2512. idol

  2513. an

  2514. idol

  2515. is

  2516. a

  2517. false

  2518. god

  2519. and

  2520. a

  2521. false

  2522. god

  2523. will

  2524. give

  2525. you

  2526. a

  2527. sense

  2528. of

  2529. purpose

  2530. a

  2531. sense

  2532. of

  2533. direction

  2534. a

  2535. sense

  2536. of

  2537. identity

  2538. a

  2539. set

  2540. of

  2541. rules

  2542. and

  2543. the

  2544. main

  2545. task

  2546. of

  2547. discipleship

  2548. is

  2549. that

  2550. the

  2551. one

  2552. who

  2553. gives

  2554. us

  2555. our

  2556. direction

  2557. the

  2558. one

  2559. that

  2560. gives

  2561. us

  2562. meaning

  2563. the

  2564. one

  2565. that

  2566. tells

  2567. us

  2568. how

  2569. to

  2570. live

  2571. the

  2572. one

  2573. that

  2574. gives

  2575. us

  2576. purpose

  2577. true

  2578. north

  2579. all

  2580. of

  2581. that

  2582. becomes

  2583. Jesus

  2584. and

  2585. if

  2586. it's

  2587. Jesus

  2588. it

  2589. means

  2590. all

  2591. the

  2592. other

  2593. idols

  2594. that

  2595. we

  2596. have

  2597. all

  2598. of

  2599. the

  2600. ways

  2601. whether

  2602. it's

  2603. power

  2604. or

  2605. being

  2606. a

  2607. Canadian

  2608. or

  2609. a

  2610. Canadian

  2611. understanding

  2612. of

  2613. this

  2614. or

  2615. that

  2616. or

  2617. whatever

  2618. that

  2619. gives

  2620. us

  2621. meaning

  2622. and

  2623. direction

  2624. and

  2625. sense

  2626. and

  2627. purpose

  2628. and

  2629. all

  2630. of

  2631. that

  2632. these

  2633. we

  2634. have

  2635. to

  2636. set

  2637. behind

  2638. us

  2639. and

  2640. die

  2641. to

  2642. it

  2643. when

  2644. we

  2645. follow

  2646. Jesus

  2647. because

  2648. there

  2649. is

  2650. only

  2651. one

  2652. God

  2653. and

  2654. only

  2655. one

  2656. Savior

  2657. and

  2658. Luke

  2659. is

  2660. communicating

  2661. that

  2662. the

  2663. creator

  2664. of

  2665. all

  2666. things

  2667. himself

  2668. is

  2669. the

  2670. one

  2671. who

  2672. dies

  2673. upon

  2674. the

  2675. cross

  2676. because

  2677. he

  2678. loves

  2679. you

  2680. and

  2681. to

  2682. be

  2683. gripped

  2684. with

  2685. who

  2686. Jesus

  2687. is

  2688. that

  2689. the

  2690. creator

  2691. has

  2692. invaded

  2693. his

  2694. creation

  2695. to

  2696. begin

  2697. to

  2698. set

  2699. all

  2700. things

  2701. right

  2702. and

  2703. we

  2704. know

  2705. that

  2706. one

  2707. day

  2708. he

  2709. will

  2710. return

  2711. and

  2712. when

  2713. he

  2714. returns

  2715. all

  2716. this

  2717. world

  2718. will

  2719. come

  2720. to

  2721. an

  2722. end

  2723. and

  2724. all

  2725. idols

  2726. will

  2727. be

  2728. unmasked

  2729. and

  2730. come

  2731. to

  2732. an

  2733. end

  2734. and

  2735. this

  2736. in

  2737. between

  2738. time

  2739. will

  2740. come

  2741. to

  2742. an

  2743. end

  2744. and

  2745. all

  2746. who

  2747. are

  2748. alive

  2749. will

  2750. be

  2751. judged

  2752. and

  2753. those

  2754. in

  2755. Christ

  2756. will

  2757. be

  2758. Christ's

  2759. with

  2760. resurrection

  2761. bodies

  2762. in a

  2763. resurrection

  2764. world

  2765. to

  2766. live

  2767. with

  2768. him

  2769. and

  2770. each

  2771. other

  2772. forever

  2773. please

  2774. stand

  2775. just

  2776. bow

  2777. our

  2778. heads

  2779. in

  2780. prayer

  2781. father we

  2782. thank you

  2783. for the

  2784. sound of

  2785. children

  2786. in the

  2787. other

  2788. room

  2789. we know

  2790. it's a

  2791. bit

  2792. distracting

  2793. but

  2794. it's

  2795. so

  2796. nice

  2797. to be

  2798. distracted

  2799. by

  2800. children

  2801. in

  2802. church

  2803. rather

  2804. than

  2805. being

  2806. in

  2807. a

  2808. dead

  2809. place

  2810. without

  2811. the
