  1. In Romans 1 we read,

  2. Great. Thank you, Victoria.

  3. Will you join me as we pray?

  4. Let's come before our Father.

  5. And just, if you're new, this is something we do every week.

  6. This isn't me praying.

  7. This is us as a church praying.

  8. So agree with me.

  9. Join in me.

  10. Let's pray together.

  11. Heavenly Father, gracious Lord,

  12. we come before you this morning to adore you and to worship you.

  13. We come before you to sing your praises,

  14. to remind ourselves, to remind one another of your greatness and your grace,

  15. of your majesty and your mercy.

  16. We come to proclaim your worth, God, that there's no one like you.

  17. There's none in all creation that even comes close to being compared to you.

  18. God, you are majestic and sovereign and glorious and wonderful.

  19. And God, you are tender and gracious and gentle and so patient and so forgiving and so kind.

  20. God, where could we go to find one like you?

  21. God, we come to worship you and adore you this morning,

  22. to find rest for our hearts and peace, God, in troubled times.

  23. Father, thank you for your word that speaks to our hearts.

  24. God, thank you for the wonder of the scriptures that aren't just good advice,

  25. but it's your proclamation of good news to us, Lord.

  26. Lord, and as we look at this passage in Romans 1 again today,

  27. and as we consider the gospel,

  28. Lord, we pray that for us as a church,

  29. you'll calibrate our hearts or recalibrate our hearts with the truth of the gospel.

  30. God, won't you realign our hearts to your hearts?

  31. Jesus, come and do a deep work in us, I pray.

  32. Fathers, over these weeks, we consider the good news of the gospel.

  33. We pray that you set us free.

  34. We pray, God, that you arrest our insecurities and our fears.

  35. We pray, God, that you humble us of our pride.

  36. And Jesus, come and make us more like you.

  37. God, we really do want to be a gospel-centered church,

  38. and so we ask you to come and do that in our midst.

  39. But God, as the gospel goes deeper into us,

  40. we pray also that the gospel will go through us to this great city,

  41. that many people will come to know you,

  42. come to know the life and the truth and the wonder of Jesus

  43. because of ordinary people like us.

  44. God, we pray that our friends and our family and our neighbors and our colleagues

  45. and those we play sports with and those we interact with,

  46. that God, some way we'll be able to share the wonderful news of Jesus with them.

  47. We pray this Chinese New Year, God, as we get together with family

  48. and as we are reunited, we pray, God, for opportunities to share the wonder of Jesus.

  49. God, we pray that the gospel will go through us.

  50. Father, we pray also for our great continent of Asia,

  51. billions and billions of people that do not know you.

  52. Father, we want to pray for churches and missionaries across Asia,

  53. those that are in China and Korea and Japan and Mongolia and Indonesia and Bangladesh

  54. and Pakistan and Myanmar and Malaysia.

  55. God, we pray that across Asia a revival of the gospel will spread.

  56. We pray for those that don't know you, God,

  57. and we pray for our brothers and sisters across this continent that do know you.

  58. Pray this morning you encourage them and strengthen them.

  59. We pray for this great continent of ours.

  60. Lord, we want to pray for Amelia, our sister in Taiwan.

  61. We pray today, won't you encourage her and strengthen her.

  62. Flood her with your love this morning, God.

  63. Finally, God, we want to pray this morning for our friends Chris and Fiona

  64. in the final weeks of sabbatical.

  65. As they come back at the end of this month, we pray for them.

  66. As they're spending good time with their family in the UK,

  67. we pray that it will be a rich time, a rewarding time.

  68. So I want you to be with them.

  69. Pray for Chris and Fiona and little Etienne.

  70. Encourage them and strengthen them.

  71. We pray that they come back to Watermark so full of faith and courage, God.

  72. And so be with our friends, we pray.

  73. We pray these things in your wonderful and your powerful name.

  74. Amen.

  75. Amen.

  76. Amen.

  77. Okay.

  78. We are in a series called Watermark Essentials.

  79. And we are looking at the Watermark values,

  80. these things that we talk about all the time.

  81. And just like banks and schools and corporations and any NGO,

  82. it's very easy for the values, the things that we talk about,

  83. the things that are on the website and on posters and that,

  84. just to merely be theoretical or aspirational,

  85. things that we hope we will one day become.

  86. But as a church, these values that we talk about,

  87. gospel, community, and mission,

  88. these are things that we don't just want to be theoretical.

  89. We want them to be actual.

  90. We want them to be the reality of our lives and our church.

  91. And so we're taking a couple of weeks to talk through these

  92. and to explain them and to dive back into the scripture

  93. and to look at these things.

  94. And we are starting off by looking at this thing called the gospel.

  95. And the question we're asking is,

  96. what is the gospel and what's the big deal about it?

  97. Why is it that at Watermark,

  98. we are always talking about the gospel?

  99. What does gospel-centered actually mean anyway?

  100. Why is it so special?

  101. And why do we not shut up about this thing called the gospel?

  102. Now, if you weren't here last week,

  103. we started off last week and we said that the gospel

  104. is the announcement of God's good news.

  105. Not just his good advice about how to live your life.

  106. That's one of the most important distinctions.

  107. The gospel isn't just good advice how to become a nicer person.

  108. It's the announcement of God's good news.

  109. And we said that this good news, it leaks from our hearts.

  110. Or we forget it.

  111. Now, we don't forget the data points.

  112. But its vividness, its potency leaks from our hearts.

  113. And when that happens,

  114. we lose some of the power of the gospel to transform us.

  115. And so at Watermark,

  116. one of the things we try to do is we want to be a church

  117. that isn't only referencing the gospel

  118. or considering the gospel.

  119. We want to be a church that really,

  120. our lives and as a church,

  121. we are centered on the gospel.

  122. We are empowered by the gospel.

  123. So another way of saying that is,

  124. as a church,

  125. we really do believe that the commands

  126. and the instructions that Jesus gives us,

  127. all the things we find in the Bible,

  128. these are good things.

  129. These are important things.

  130. We really do want to follow Jesus.

  131. We really do want to live lives that honor Him

  132. and glorify Him.

  133. Jesus said,

  134. Be holy as I am holy.

  135. We want to do that.

  136. But at the same time,

  137. we want to be empowered by the gospel.

  138. And we've realized the only way we can live the lives

  139. that God has called us to

  140. is from deep meditation,

  141. deep reflection,

  142. and deep heartfelt response

  143. to who God is

  144. and the good news of the gospel.

  145. And so that's one of the things that,

  146. as a church,

  147. we're passionate about.

  148. And that means that,

  149. as a church,

  150. we don't just want to consider the gospel

  151. the way into the Christian life.

  152. It's the way of the Christian life.

  153. It's not just the way you become a Christian.

  154. It's the way that you grow as a Christian

  155. and become the Christian

  156. that God has called us to be.

  157. And so today,

  158. I want us to explore that a little bit further.

  159. And in order to do that,

  160. let's just go back and recap

  161. what exactly is the gospel.

  162. And so one of the things we said last week

  163. is this good news announcement

  164. of the good news.

  165. And the reason it's good news

  166. is because there was prior to that

  167. some bad news.

  168. And the bad news is our sin, right?

  169. And sin is not just the bad things we do,

  170. like lying or stealing

  171. or being dishonest

  172. or having an affair.

  173. Okay, that is a bad thing.

  174. We shouldn't do that.

  175. Okay, don't do those things.

  176. That's not good.

  177. But sin is actually far more than that.

  178. Sin is the orientation of our hearts

  179. that says,

  180. I want to be my own God.

  181. I want to live for myself.

  182. At its essence,

  183. sin is a rejection

  184. of the one true God

  185. and His role

  186. as being Lord of the world

  187. and Lord of my life,

  188. God of the world

  189. and God of my life.

  190. And at its essence,

  191. sin is saying,

  192. I want to be my own God.

  193. I want to be my own Lord.

  194. I want to be in control of my life.

  195. And ever since sin entered the world,

  196. that has been the default position

  197. of every human being.

  198. It's the root cause

  199. behind everything else

  200. that goes wrong.

  201. It's the infection

  202. behind the fever, right?

  203. It's the cancer

  204. behind the headache.

  205. It's the underlying issue.

  206. And so every horizontal

  207. and human problem

  208. we see in the world

  209. is symptomatic

  210. of a deeper real issue,

  211. which is that our lives

  212. are out of sync

  213. with the God that made us

  214. to be in relationship with Him

  215. because we want to be

  216. our own gods.

  217. And to this problem,

  218. the stunning announcement

  219. of the good news

  220. of the gospel

  221. rushes in

  222. with incredible force

  223. that says,

  224. Jesus lived the life

  225. that we should have lived.

  226. Jesus,

  227. by dying the death

  228. that we should have died,

  229. took the punishment

  230. for our sin

  231. upon Himself.

  232. God poured it out

  233. upon Jesus

  234. as our substitute.

  235. He took our punishment

  236. in our place.

  237. And the reason He did this

  238. is because of

  239. His profound love for us.

  240. His incredible love for us.

  241. That's the essence

  242. of the gospel.

  243. Okay, did you get that?

  244. Does that make sense?

  245. Okay, this is going

  246. to be hard work.

  247. Okay.

  248. And so,

  249. in light of that,

  250. what I'm trying

  251. to persuade us of

  252. in these couple of weeks

  253. is that this

  254. stunning announcement

  255. of good news

  256. is not just

  257. the power

  258. to save us,

  259. it's also the power

  260. that changes us.

  261. Well, another way

  262. of saying that is

  263. it's not only necessary

  264. to believe

  265. and respond to the gospel

  266. in order to become

  267. a Christian.

  268. Okay, that is important.

  269. You do need to do that.

  270. But if our lives

  271. are ever going to become

  272. anywhere close

  273. to the kind of lives

  274. that the Bible describes

  275. or anywhere close

  276. to the kind of lives

  277. that Jesus wants us to have,

  278. we need to be those

  279. that are continually

  280. being shaped

  281. and formed

  282. according to that

  283. good news announcement

  284. of the gospel.

  285. And more and more

  286. and more

  287. as the years go by,

  288. not less

  289. and less and less.

  290. Okay, that's what

  291. I'm trying to do

  292. these couple of weeks.

  293. And that's why

  294. the New Testament

  295. is absolutely full.

  296. The apostles

  297. are constantly

  298. hammering home to us

  299. that every instruction

  300. they give us,

  301. everything they ask us

  302. to do,

  303. always comes back

  304. to the gospel.

  305. That's why Paul says

  306. in Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  307. what Victoria read

  308. to us this morning,

  309. he says,

  310. you Christians in Rome,

  311. I want to come to you,

  312. I want to strengthen you,

  313. I want to impart

  314. some spiritual gift to you,

  315. I want to remind you

  316. of the gospel.

  317. I'm not ashamed

  318. of the gospel,

  319. it's the power of God

  320. for salvation.

  321. But not only for salvation,

  322. but also to change us.

  323. It's why Paul writes

  324. in Corinthians,

  325. he says,

  326. now I want to remind you,

  327. brothers and sisters,

  328. of the gospel.

  329. That Jesus died

  330. as the scripture said,

  331. that he rose again

  332. as the scripture said

  333. he would.

  334. It's why

  335. when Paul in 2 Corinthians 8

  336. wants to encourage

  337. the Christians

  338. to be generous

  339. with their money,

  340. he comes back

  341. to the gospel.

  342. He says,

  343. remember how

  344. God left heaven

  345. and became poor

  346. for your sake

  347. and said you can be

  348. rich in Jesus.

  349. Your riches aren't found

  350. in your bank account,

  351. it's found that you're

  352. in Jesus.

  353. It's why

  354. when Peter writes

  355. to the Christians

  356. and says,

  357. I want you to share

  358. the gospel

  359. with those that don't know it.

  360. But don't do it arrogantly.

  361. Don't do it like

  362. you're superior

  363. or better than them.

  364. Do it humbly.

  365. Do it gently.

  366. Why?

  367. Because Jesus died for you

  368. and you didn't have it

  369. all together.

  370. Every single thing

  371. the Bible says

  372. comes back

  373. to this gospel.

  374. Okay,

  375. so that's what

  376. we're trying to do.

  377. Now today,

  378. I want us to look

  379. at this question,

  380. how does the gospel

  381. actually change us?

  382. And by the way,

  383. I'd produced some

  384. very beautiful

  385. PowerPoint slides.

  386. They were amazing.

  387. And I uploaded

  388. the wrong ones

  389. to the website.

  390. And so,

  391. Henry and Christina

  392. put some slides together

  393. and so,

  394. I'm sorry,

  395. some of the quotes

  396. that aren't there today.

  397. You just kind of

  398. have to pay extra attention

  399. to listen to me.

  400. Okay,

  401. so maybe I should

  402. do that more often.

  403. So,

  404. how does the gospel

  405. change us?

  406. Well,

  407. three ways.

  408. The gospel gives us

  409. a new identity

  410. that is not based

  411. on performance.

  412. The gospel drives,

  413. it gives us,

  414. how do I say,

  415. it gives us

  416. humility

  417. that drives out pride.

  418. And the gospel

  419. gives us a love

  420. that drives out fear

  421. and insecurity.

  422. Okay,

  423. so firstly,

  424. the gospel gives us

  425. a new identity.

  426. 500 years ago,

  427. there was this German monk

  428. called Martin Luther

  429. and he was grappling

  430. with the gospel.

  431. And in fact,

  432. the verse that Victoria

  433. read to us,

  434. Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1:17

  435. verse 17 and 18,

  436. was the verse

  437. that changed his whole life.

  438. He was meditating

  439. on this verse

  440. and he suddenly realized

  441. the gospel.

  442. And Martin Luther

  443. then went

  444. and was sharing

  445. the gospel with others

  446. and he lit a bomb

  447. in Europe.

  448. He didn't light

  449. a physical bomb.

  450. But as he shared

  451. the gospel,

  452. the whole of Europe

  453. was turned on its head.

  454. Now,

  455. Martin Luther summarized

  456. the Christian life

  457. as this.

  458. Okay,

  459. you ready for a little

  460. Latin lesson?

  461. This is what he said.

  462. The Christian

  463. is simul justus

  464. e precator.

  465. Did you get that?

  466. Okay.

  467. Simultaneously,

  468. sinful,

  469. and yet accepted.

  470. The Christian life

  471. is somebody

  472. who is simultaneously

  473. at one and the same time

  474. sinful,

  475. broken,

  476. flawed.

  477. They don't have it

  478. all together.

  479. And yet at the same time,

  480. loved,

  481. and accepted,

  482. and cherished by God

  483. because of who Jesus is

  484. and what he's done

  485. on the cross.

  486. So Tim Keller

  487. very famously

  488. says a simile.

  489. He says,

  490. the gospel tells us

  491. that if I am in Christ,

  492. at one and the same time,

  493. I am both more broken

  494. and sinful

  495. than I could possibly

  496. think I am.

  497. In other words,

  498. my heart is more

  499. self-centered,

  500. self-orientated.

  501. There's more pride

  502. in my heart

  503. than I realize.

  504. And yet at the same time,

  505. I am more loved,

  506. more accepted,

  507. more acceptable

  508. to God

  509. than I could ever

  510. dare,

  511. possibly,

  512. even hope

  513. to be possibly true.

  514. You see, friends,

  515. apart from the gospel,

  516. your identity

  517. and your self-worth

  518. is always going to be

  519. based on some kind

  520. of performance,

  521. on how well you think

  522. you're doing,

  523. either in God's eyes

  524. or in the world's eyes

  525. or in your parents' eyes

  526. or maybe in your own eyes.

  527. But in the gospel,

  528. we are given an identity,

  529. a sense of self-worth

  530. that says you're loved

  531. and accepted

  532. and acceptable

  533. despite your flaws

  534. and your shortcomings.

  535. And it is an identity

  536. which is not earned

  537. or achieved

  538. through hard work.

  539. It's not earned

  540. or achieved

  541. through some kind

  542. of performance.

  543. It is freely given to you

  544. because Jesus died

  545. on the cross.

  546. And friends,

  547. that changes everything.

  548. It changes the way

  549. that you relate

  550. to yourself.

  551. It changes the way

  552. that you relate to God.

  553. But it also changes

  554. the way that you relate

  555. to every other person

  556. in your life.

  557. So Richard Lovelace,

  558. who is a seminary professor

  559. in the U.S.,

  560. he said it like this.

  561. This is one of the quotes

  562. I'm meant to have up there.

  563. So you're going to have

  564. to listen.

  565. He says,

  566. for most Christians,

  567. we intellectually know

  568. that God's acceptance of us

  569. is because of what Jesus

  570. did on the cross.

  571. Okay?

  572. We know that

  573. in our heads.

  574. But in our actual

  575. day-to-day existence,

  576. most of us still rely

  577. on our performance

  578. as good Christians

  579. to assure us

  580. of God's love

  581. and acceptance.

  582. We rely on either

  583. our spiritual sincerity

  584. or our past experience

  585. of conversion

  586. or maybe our recent

  587. religious performance

  588. or the relative infrequency

  589. of our conscious sin.

  590. Okay?

  591. So saying,

  592. we believe in our heads,

  593. yes, Jesus died for me,

  594. I know He loves me,

  595. but actually,

  596. in the day-to-day

  597. trenches of life,

  598. Monday to Friday,

  599. what gives me confidence

  600. or assurance

  601. that God loves me

  602. is that I think

  603. I'm not such a bad person.

  604. Now, friends,

  605. can I just say,

  606. up until a few years ago,

  607. that absolutely

  608. described my life.

  609. Absolutely.

  610. If I had a good week,

  611. I did my devotions,

  612. I led a Bible study,

  613. I led some meeting

  614. and it went well,

  615. I felt good about myself.

  616. God must really love me.

  617. He must be so thankful

  618. that I'm on His side.

  619. I mean,

  620. I wouldn't say that,

  621. but somewhere in the back

  622. of my mind,

  623. I thought that.

  624. And sure,

  625. a tinge of self-righteousness,

  626. right?

  627. But if I had a bad week,

  628. some sin,

  629. didn't do my devotion

  630. so well,

  631. oh,

  632. felt miserable.

  633. What Richard Loveless

  634. is saying,

  635. how easy it is

  636. for his Christians

  637. to believe

  638. that we need the gospel

  639. to become a Christian,

  640. but from there on out,

  641. we operate

  642. by a different principle,

  643. which is that

  644. we look inside of ourselves.

  645. Yesterday,

  646. I was walking in the street

  647. and I walked past a lady

  648. who wore a t-shirt

  649. and it said,

  650. look for the inner peace

  651. inside of yourself.

  652. And I wanted to grip her

  653. and say,

  654. no, no, no,

  655. don't do that.

  656. That's a terrible idea.

  657. What Richard Loveless

  658. then goes on to say

  659. is this.

  660. Listen up,

  661. this is so important.

  662. It says,

  663. Christians who are not sure

  664. of God's love

  665. and that God accepts them

  666. in Jesus,

  667. apart from some spiritual performance,

  668. are subconsciously

  669. radically insecure persons.

  670. Oh my goodness.

  671. Friends,

  672. am I the only one

  673. that that describes?

  674. I think not.

  675. Friends,

  676. until I understood the gospel

  677. clearly a few years ago,

  678. I was radically,

  679. radically insecure.

  680. Now,

  681. as a Christian,

  682. I would do all the right things.

  683. I acted like a fantastic Christian,

  684. but deep inside,

  685. I was so radically insecure

  686. because I wasn't assured

  687. of the,

  688. despite the fact that I'm sinful,

  689. God loves me.

  690. So what does that actually mean?

  691. Friends,

  692. in the gospel,

  693. you and I are given

  694. the truth

  695. that while it's true,

  696. we are flawed and broken.

  697. At one and the same time,

  698. we are unbelievably loved.

  699. Not because of what we've done,

  700. but because of what Jesus

  701. has done for us

  702. in the gospel.

  703. So what does that mean?

  704. Many,

  705. many years ago,

  706. there was a guy called

  707. Jonathan Edwards,

  708. one of America's greatest

  709. theologians and pastors.

  710. He was a theologian

  711. at Yale University.

  712. And he wrote this book

  713. about 300 years ago

  714. called

  715. The Nature of True Virtue.

  716. Virtue means morality or ethic,

  717. the nature of good behavior.

  718. And in this book,

  719. he says that

  720. for most of us,

  721. the motivation that we have

  722. for it to be moral

  723. or ethical or virtuous

  724. is we appeal to either

  725. pride or fear.

  726. And he gives an example.

  727. He says,

  728. how do we teach people

  729. to be honest

  730. or to be truth-telling?

  731. How do we teach our children

  732. to tell the truth?

  733. Well,

  734. we often say something like,

  735. you know,

  736. you really should tell the truth.

  737. Don't lie

  738. because one day

  739. somebody will catch you

  740. and then

  741. bad things are going to happen.

  742. Then nobody will trust you anymore.

  743. Okay?

  744. So we appeal to a sense of fear.

  745. Don't lie

  746. because the consequences

  747. will be bad.

  748. Now,

  749. we do this in contemporary

  750. Christianity as well.

  751. We say to people things like,

  752. don't have sex

  753. outside of marriage.

  754. Don't sleep with your girlfriend

  755. because,

  756. you know,

  757. someone may fall pregnant

  758. and then,

  759. you know,

  760. you may drop out of college

  761. or out of high school

  762. and then you won't get the job

  763. that you want

  764. and your life will just be difficult.

  765. So don't sleep around

  766. outside of marriage.

  767. Okay?

  768. Or don't sleep around

  769. outside of marriage.

  770. You might contract some disease.

  771. So we use fear

  772. as a motivation.

  773. Or,

  774. we use pride

  775. as a motivation.

  776. We say,

  777. don't lie,

  778. don't be dishonest

  779. because one day

  780. somebody will catch you out

  781. and then everyone will know

  782. that you're a liar.

  783. No one will trust you anymore.

  784. You'll bring shame

  785. on your family.

  786. Then your reputation

  787. will be gone.

  788. So we appeal

  789. to some kind of pride.

  790. We think,

  791. don't do that

  792. because you're better than that.

  793. That's not what Murphys do.

  794. Right?

  795. I remember my dad

  796. growing up saying,

  797. Murphys,

  798. we don't lie.

  799. Right?

  800. We're better than that.

  801. Those guys down there,

  802. maybe.

  803. But us Murphys,

  804. we don't do that.

  805. Now,

  806. motivating somebody

  807. out of fear

  808. and pride

  809. isn't necessarily wrong,

  810. but it's just ineffective.

  811. It doesn't change

  812. the inner driver

  813. or the motivation

  814. of my heart.

  815. Now,

  816. it's not necessarily wrong

  817. to warn somebody

  818. of the consequences

  819. of their actions,

  820. but just think about this.

  821. If I tell somebody,

  822. don't lie,

  823. don't be dishonest

  824. because one day

  825. they're going to catch you out,

  826. that can stop me lying,

  827. but it doesn't make me

  828. love truth.

  829. It doesn't make me

  830. love honesty.

  831. If I tell somebody,

  832. don't sleep around

  833. because there might be

  834. bad consequences,

  835. I might constrain

  836. or restrain

  837. their behavior,

  838. but that doesn't deal

  839. with the lust in the heart.

  840. That doesn't deal

  841. with the addictions

  842. in my heart.

  843. It might restrain

  844. my behavior

  845. so I act like

  846. a good Christian

  847. and do the right things,

  848. but the sin

  849. and the self-centeredness

  850. of my heart

  851. is still intact.

  852. In fact,

  853. if anything,

  854. it's strengthened

  855. because I appeal

  856. to my self-centeredness.

  857. I say,

  858. you want to live

  859. a good life?

  860. Well,

  861. then don't do this,

  862. don't do this,

  863. don't do this.

  864. You'll have a successful life.

  865. I look to my own interests

  866. to think of myself

  867. as a better person

  868. and I strengthen

  869. the self-centeredness

  870. in my heart.

  871. I can stop somebody lying,

  872. but that doesn't make them

  873. love truth and honesty.

  874. I can stop somebody

  875. sleeping around,

  876. but that doesn't dismantle

  877. the lust or the addiction

  878. in our hearts.

  879. So how are we really

  880. going to change?

  881. The Bible says

  882. that the gospel

  883. needs to get hold

  884. of our hearts.

  885. The gospel needs

  886. to get hold of our hearts.

  887. In the book of Titus

  888. in the New Testament,

  889. the Apostle Paul

  890. writes to the readers

  891. and he says this,

  892. I want you to say no

  893. to ungodliness

  894. and worldly passions

  895. and to say yes

  896. to self-controlled,

  897. upright,

  898. godly lives.

  899. Okay,

  900. so that's a good thing.

  901. As Christians,

  902. if you're a believer

  903. this morning,

  904. that's what we want.

  905. No to ungodliness

  906. and worldly passions.

  907. Yes to a self-controlled,

  908. upright,

  909. godly life.

  910. Okay?

  911. Now think about this.

  912. Think about all the

  913. different ways

  914. that you can tell yourself

  915. to say no

  916. to ungodliness

  917. and worldly desires.

  918. You can say no

  919. because it'll make me

  920. look bad.

  921. You can say no

  922. because then I'll be

  923. excluded from certain

  924. social circles

  925. that I want to belong to.

  926. You can say no

  927. to doing the wrong things

  928. because then God

  929. will not give me

  930. health and wealth

  931. and happiness.

  932. You can say no,

  933. I'm not going to do

  934. those bad things

  935. because then one day

  936. I'll go to hell.

  937. You can say no

  938. because then I'll hate

  939. myself in the morning

  940. and my self-esteem

  941. will go down.

  942. All of those things

  943. appeal to a self-centeredness

  944. and they keep

  945. the self-centeredness

  946. of my life still intact.

  947. But look at how Paul

  948. calls Christians

  949. to change.

  950. Paul says

  951. it's the grace of God

  952. in the salvation

  953. of Jesus

  954. that teaches us

  955. or trains us

  956. or coaches us

  957. to say no

  958. to ungodliness

  959. and worldly desires

  960. and yes

  961. to self-controlled,

  962. upright,

  963. godly lives.

  964. You see what he's saying?

  965. He's saying

  966. it's the grace

  967. of God

  968. in Jesus

  969. that coaches

  970. or trains our hearts

  971. that reorientates

  972. our hearts

  973. away from

  974. a self-centeredness

  975. to saying yes

  976. to God,

  977. yes to loving

  978. those around me

  979. and yes to the life

  980. that God wants me to.

  981. And how does he define

  982. this grace of God

  983. and salvation?

  984. Well in chapter 3

  985. he goes on and says

  986. God saved us

  987. not because of

  988. righteous things

  989. we've done

  990. but because of

  991. his mercy.

  992. See another way

  993. of saying that is

  994. it's God's profound

  995. love for us

  996. expressed in the gospel

  997. that gives our hearts

  998. such a security

  999. such a peace

  1000. and a confidence

  1001. that it changes

  1002. not only our behavior

  1003. it changes the inner

  1004. workings of my heart.

1005. It makes me the kind

  1006. of person that wants

  1007. to tell the truth.

1008. It makes me the kind

  1009. of person that wants

1010. to say no to lust

  1011. and addiction.

1012. It makes me the kind

  1013. of person that wants

  1014. to be the person

1015. that Jesus wants me to be.

  1016. Not just somebody

  1017. that behaves

  1018. in a Christian way

  1019. but actually reorientates

  1020. the inner workings

  1021. of my heart.

  1022. Paul is saying

  1023. friends if you want

  1024. true change

1025. you must let the truth

  1026. of the gospel

  1027. train our hearts.

  1028. Say no to ungodliness

  1029. yes to him

1030. let the grace of God

  1031. that brings salvation

  1032. train us

1033. to say no to ungodliness.

  1034. Friends when we let

1035. our hearts to be trained

  1036. by the gospel

  1037. through deep meditation

  1038. and reflection upon it

  1039. two things happen.

  1040. The first is

1041. it gives us a humility

  1042. that drives out pride.

  1043. See the gospel

  1044. gives us a new

  1045. kind of humility.

  1046. A humility

  1047. that dislodges us

  1048. from being the center

  1049. of our lives

  1050. because the gospel

  1051. tells us

  1052. Kevin

  1053. you're more sinful

  1054. than you realize.

  1055. You're actually not all

1056. that you think you are.

  1057. And that dislodges

1058. the pride in my heart.

  1059. I remember a few years ago

  1060. reading Scotty Smith

1061. if you've never read him

  1062. he's an amazing blogger

  1063. find Scotty Smith.

  1064. I remember a few years ago

  1065. reading an article

  1066. by Scotty Smith

  1067. in which he talks

  1068. about the way

  1069. that the Apostle Paul

  1070. updates his

  1071. professional resume

  1072. throughout the New Testament.

  1073. Anybody here

  1074. updated your resume

  1075. recently?

  1076. If your boss

1077. is sitting next to you

  1078. don't raise your hand.

  1079. Water marks off

  1080. don't raise your hand.

  1081. Anyone?

  1082. Okay.

  1083. The Apostle Paul

  1084. throughout the New Testament

  1085. updates his

  1086. professional resume.

1087. Look at what he says.

  1088. In 57 AD

  1089. he says

  1090. I'm the least

  1091. of all the apostles.

  1092. 1 Corinthians 15.

  1093. 3 years later

  1094. in 60 AD

  1095. he says

  1096. I am the least

1097. of all of God's people.

  1098. Ephesians 3.

  1099. 3 years later

  1100. 63 AD

  1101. he says

  1102. I am the chief

  1103. of sinners.

  1104. Now if you know

  1105. anything about

  1106. the Apostle Paul

  1107. this humility

  1108. that the gospel

  1109. produced in him

  1110. wasn't because

  1111. he is a naturally

  1112. humble person.

  1113. Okay.

  1114. In Ephesians

  1115. in the Philippians

  1116. it tells us

  1117. what an arrogant

  1118. self-centered person

  1119. he was

  1120. before he encountered

  1121. Jesus.

  1122. He was bent

  1123. on destroying

  1124. anyone that

  1125. disagreed with him.

1126. He went to the courts

  1127. and said

  1128. got a court order

  1129. to arrest

  1130. and persecute

  1131. and throw in jail

  1132. anybody

  1133. that wanted

  1134. to follow Jesus.

  1135. Anyone that wasn't

  1136. like him

  1137. that disagreed

  1138. with him

  1139. he hated them

  1140. he wanted them

  1141. in jail

  1142. he wanted nothing

  1143. to do with them.

  1144. But when he

  1145. encounters the grace

  1146. of God

  1147. in the gospel

  1148. what happens?

  1149. Something changes

  1150. inside of him.

  1151. He doesn't just

  1152. put on Christian

  1153. behavior

  1154. he doesn't just say

  1155. I guess I better

  1156. act humble now.

  1157. Something inside

  1158. the inner driving

  1159. of his life

  1160. changes.

  1161. The gospel

  1162. gave him

  1163. a humility

  1164. that drove out

  1165. the pride

  1166. of his life

  1167. and continued

  1168. to do so

  1169. as he got

  1170. older and older.

  1171. The more

  1172. that he grew

  1173. in the gospel

  1174. the more humble

  1175. he became.

  1176. The gospel

  1177. friends

  1178. produces

  1179. a different

  1180. kind of person

  1181. a genuine

  1182. gentleness

  1183. and a humility

  1184. humility

  1185. because such

  1186. a person

  1187. is seen

  1188. inside

  1189. their own

  1190. heart

  1191. and knows

  1192. what it is

  1193. that they've

  1194. been saved

  1195. from.

  1196. Remember the

  1197. famous C.S. Lewis

  1198. quote?

  1199. He says

  1200. being humble

  1201. isn't thinking

  1202. less of yourself

  1203. it's thinking

  1204. about yourself

  1205. less.

  1206. Okay?

  1207. So you might

  1208. begin to think

  1209. I'm a really

  1210. humble person

  1211. because I'm

  1212. just

  1213. I think of

  1214. myself

  1215. so miserable

  1216. I'm such a

  1217. sinner

  1218. I'm such a

  1219. loser

  1220. no one could

  1221. ever love me

  1222. woe is me

  1223. friends that's

  1224. not a humble

  1225. person

  1226. that's a proud

  1227. person

  1228. you're still

  1229. thinking about

  1230. yourself all

  1231. the time

  1232. a genuinely

  1233. humble person

  1234. is someone

  1235. that's forgotten

  1236. about themselves

  1237. all together

  1238. and the gospel

  1239. does that

  1240. because it says

  1241. yes you're a

  1242. sinner

  1243. yes you're

  1244. broken

  1245. but at the

  1246. same time

  1247. you loved

  1248. in Jesus

  1249. and you're

  1250. perfectly

  1251. acceptable

  1252. by him

  1253. so you don't

  1254. need to think

  1255. of yourself

  1256. as a miserable

  1257. loser

  1258. you're loved

  1259. by Jesus

  1260. you have an

  1261. identity

  1262. that's found

  1263. in him

  1264. I'm sure

  1265. my parents

  1266. won't mind

  1267. me sharing

  1268. this

  1269. but if they

  1270. do

  1271. maybe they'll

  1272. never find

  1273. out

  1274. so let's

  1275. just keep

  1276. this between

  1277. the 200

  1278. of us

  1279. okay

  1280. my parents

  1281. are the

  1282. greatest parents

  1283. in the entire

  1284. world

  1285. honestly

  1286. I'm sure

  1287. you have

  1288. wonderful

  1289. parents

  1290. I've got

  1291. the best

  1292. parents

  1293. in the whole

  1294. world

  1295. and growing

  1296. up

  1297. the greatest

  1298. mom and dad

  1299. my dad

  1300. was a businessman

  1301. for most of his

  1302. life

  1303. fairly

  1304. successful

  1305. and when my

  1306. dad turned

  1307. 50

  1308. my parents

  1309. felt God

  1310. called them

  1311. to move

  1312. to Asia

  1313. so they

  1314. moved to Asia

  1315. first to

  1316. Malaysia

  1317. Jehor

  1318. Baru

  1319. and then

  1320. Singapore

  1321. and then

  1322. they were there

  1323. for 6 or 7

  1324. years

  1325. and when my

  1326. dad was

  1327. about 57

  1328. they felt

  1329. God calling

  1330. them to move

  1331. to Vietnam

  1332. and so they

  1333. moved to

  1334. Ho Chi Minh

  1335. City

  1336. and after a

  1337. year

  1338. coincidentally

  1339. or by God's

  1340. leading

  1341. my dad became

  1342. the pastor

  1343. of this church

  1344. and they

  1345. led that church

  1346. fantastically

  1347. this church

  1348. just grew

  1349. massively

  1350. led it for

  1351. 6 or 7

  1352. years

  1353. and then they

  1354. moved back

  1355. to Singapore

  1356. and they were

  1357. in Singapore

  1358. for 2 or 3

  1359. years

  1360. and they were

  1361. and during

  1362. that time

  1363. they joined

  1364. a church

  1365. that was

  1366. so crystal

  1367. clear on

  1368. the gospel

  1369. what the gospel

  1370. is and how

  1371. it changes

  1372. you

  1373. and so for

  1374. 2 or 3

  1375. years my

  1376. parents were

  1377. part of this

  1378. church and

  1379. then they

  1380. moved back

  1381. to South

  1382. Africa

  1383. one of the

  1384. things that

  1385. was so

  1386. incredible

  1387. for me

  1388. is to

  1389. see my

  1390. parents

  1391. then in

  1392. their mid

  1393. 60s

  1394. these incredible

  1395. incredible

  1396. people who

  1397. had loved

  1398. us so well

  1399. and loved

  1400. God so well

  1401. these people

  1402. who are my

  1403. biggest heroes

  1404. in their

  1405. mid 60s

  1406. soften

  1407. become more

  1408. gentle

  1409. more gracious

  1410. more generous

  1411. more humble

  1412. my friends

  1413. what makes

  1414. a 65 year

  1415. old man

  1416. that has been

  1417. successful in

  1418. business

  1419. successful in

  1420. ministry

  1421. CEO of

  1422. large corporations

  1423. what's going to

  1424. make someone like

  1425. that grow in

  1426. humility in their

  1427. mid 60s

  1428. most men

  1429. get more

  1430. agitated

  1431. and more

  1432. grumpy

  1433. and more

  1434. cantacorous

  1435. as they get

  1436. older

  1437. ladies

  1438. don't

  1439. nudge

  1440. your husbands

  1441. you can talk

  1442. about this

  1443. at home

  1444. but honestly

  1445. most men

  1446. the older we

  1447. get the more

  1448. grumpy we

  1449. become

  1450. what's going to

  1451. make a 65

  1452. year old man

  1453. more humble

  1454. more gracious

  1455. more generous

  1456. friends I'll tell you

  1457. what it was

  1458. it was a deep

  1459. heartfelt reflection

  1460. and revelation

  1461. and meditation

  1462. on the gospel's

  1463. penetrating

  1464. proclamation

  1465. that yes I'm

  1466. simultaneously

  1467. sinful

  1468. and yet loved

  1469. and accepted

  1470. you see friends

  1471. often we look

  1472. at Christians

  1473. people look at

  1474. Christians as

  1475. judgmental and

  1476. bigoted right

  1477. and if I'm honest

1478. I look back on my

  1479. life with such

  1480. embarrassment and

  1481. shame oh my

  1482. goodness that was

  1483. me I wish I could

  1484. go back in the

  1485. years and change

  1486. that and when I

  1487. look back at the

  1488. kind of Christian I

  1489. was I was so

  1490. judgmental and

  1491. bigoted arrogant

  1492. I did all things

  1493. that Christians were

  1494. meant to do but

  1495. man if I'm honest I

  1496. was such a dork

  1497. about it I knew

  1498. how to act the

  1499. part I looked

  1500. down on those that

  1501. weren't as good

  1502. as me or I

  1503. didn't think they

  1504. could get their

  1505. lives together

  1506. friends what's the

  1507. antidote to that

  1508. kind of arrogance

  1509. what's the antidote

  1510. to that kind of

  1511. judgmentalism it's

  1512. not following Jesus

  1513. less it's not

  1514. becoming less

  1515. committed to Jesus

  1516. it's getting the

  1517. truth of the gospel

  1518. deeper into my

  1519. heart it's more of

  1520. Jesus not less of

  1521. Jesus it's more

  1522. humility and

  1523. following him not

  1524. less following him

  1525. it's more realization

  1526. of the sinfulness of

  1527. my heart and the

  1528. love of Christ that

  1529. he poured out for

  1530. me that's what's

  1531. going to change my

  1532. heart and if I

  1533. dare am allowed

  1534. to say I've

  1535. seen it probably

  1536. still arrogant and

  1537. still judgmental but

  1538. I know I'm less so

  1539. now than I was a

  1540. few years ago

  1541. friends when my

  1542. identity and self

  1543. worth are centered

1544. on how good I am

  1545. on my performance I

  1546. can't help but look

1547. down at those that I

  1548. think are weaker

1549. than me or not as

  1550. good as me of

  1551. course I'm going to

  1552. feel superior to

  1553. others but when my

  1554. identity and self

  1555. worth are centered on

1556. the one who went to

1557. the cross for me who

1558. died for me because I

  1559. was unable to rescue

  1560. and save myself I

  1561. can't look down to

  1562. those who are

  1563. different at me I

  1564. can't look down on

  1565. those who practice

  1566. something different to

  1567. me or treat or

  1568. believe something

  1569. different to me because

  1570. everything that I have

1571. is by grace and grace

  1572. alone see that the

1573. gospel gives us a new

  1574. identity that isn't

  1575. based on performance and

1576. it gives us a new

  1577. humility that drives

  1578. out pride third thing

1579. and final thing how does

1580. the gospel change us it

1581. gives us a love that

  1582. drives our fear and

  1583. insecurity I know we

1584. spoke about this a lot

  1585. but the gospel gives

  1586. us a real honest

  1587. assessment of

  1588. ourselves we're

  1589. broken we're sinful

  1590. our hearts are

  1591. disorientated that's

  1592. true but friends if

  1593. that's all that you

  1594. think the Bible says

  1595. about you you haven't

  1596. understood the gospel

  1597. and you haven't

  1598. understood Christianity

  1599. because the gospel

  1600. says that while that

1601. is true at the same

  1602. time we are so

  1603. extravagantly I'm

  1604. trying to think of

  1605. adjectives to describe

  1606. this super extravagantly

  1607. abundantly loved and

  1608. accepted not because of

  1609. what we've done but

  1610. because of what Jesus

  1611. has done over and

  1612. against us the gospel

  1613. screams at us it's a

1614. loud halo it says God's

  1615. extravagant love for you

  1616. and I his radical

  1617. acceptance and pleasure

1618. at us God's love for us

  1619. isn't based on anything

1620. that I've done but based

  1621. purely on what Jesus

1622. done God's love for us

  1623. friends isn't based

  1624. because of what's found

1625. in my life or my

  1626. heart or my performance

  1627. it's based solely because

1628. of what's found in his

  1629. heart and that's never

1630. going to change if I'm

1631. honest I think up until

  1632. a year and a half ago I

  1633. didn't fully understand

  1634. this I remember about a

1635. year and a half ago

  1636. saying I was praying a

  1637. prayer and I remember

1638. saying God I know you

  1639. love me because that's

  1640. your job but I don't

1641. know if you really like

  1642. me I don't know if you

1643. really please with me and

  1644. as I was praying and I

1645. felt like God just say

1646. to me Kevin do you

1647. think I love you because

1648. of what's in your heart

1649. or because of what's in

  1650. my heart and I

  1651. realized God's love for

1652. me his acceptance of me

1653. is not based because of

1654. what's in my heart my

  1655. heart is rotten and

  1656. sinful it's based because

1657. of what's in his heart

1658. and his heart is rock

  1659. solid and steadfast and

  1660. it's never going to

  1661. change friends that is

1662. going to change us forever

  1663. I don't know if any of

1664. us have ever been in a

  1665. relationship where the

  1666. doesn't need to be a

  1667. romantic relationship

  1668. could be your relationship

1669. with your boss maybe your

  1670. parents maybe a friend

  1671. maybe a spouse a

  1672. relationship where you

  1673. never feel like you're

  1674. good enough everything

1675. you do you just feel

  1676. like they're going to

  1677. criticize me I'm going

1678. to try my absolute best

1679. and for some reason it's

1680. not going to be good

1681. enough you know how that

  1682. feels does that soften

  1683. your heart does that

1684. make you want to be

  1685. generous does that make

1686. you want to be gracious

  1687. does that make you

  1688. want to be servant

  1689. hearted and loving

  1690. friends when you're in

  1691. a relationship and you

  1692. are never good enough

  1693. what happens our heart

  1694. closes over we become

  1695. hard-hearted to protect

  1696. ourselves we become

  1697. more defensive in the

1698. gospel Jesus tells us no

1699. matter what you do I

1700. love you and my love

1701. for you is not going to

  1702. change Romans Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1703. chapter 1 Jesus says

1704. this his love for us or

1705. it says this God is

1706. in his love for us he

  1707. predestined us for

  1708. salvation before the

  1709. foundation of the world

1710. before you done a single

1711. thing right or a single

1712. thing wrong God in his

1713. love chose to set his

  1714. love upon you

  1715. Ephesians chapter 2 says

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

1716. because of his great love

1717. for us Jesus went to the

  1718. cross for us

1719. friends in Romans in John

    John 15 chapter mention

  1720. chapter 15 Jesus says

1721. this as the father has

1722. loved me so I have loved

  1723. you

  1724. is that not astounding

1725. as God the father loves

1726. Jesus Jesus loves you and

  1727. I

  1728. Claire and I once knew a

1729. young lady in Cape Town

1730. who always struggled not to

  1731. be in a romantic

  1732. relationship she was

  1733. forever in a romantic

  1734. relationship didn't always

1735. last long but as soon as

1736. the one ended within a week

1737. or two she was in another

  1738. one and these romantic

  1739. relationships were always

1740. a mess she was always

  1741. getting herself in trouble

1742. and just they didn't end

1743. well right I remember one

1744. day she said to us this is

1745. bad news I've got to stop

1746. this I've decided no more

1747. dating and no more dating

1748. good news but then pretty

  1749. soon she started drinking

  1750. quite a lot every day a

1751. bit more and one weekend

1752. she went away to a music

1753. festival with some friends and

1754. the week after she told us she

1755. said you know on Sunday

1756. often you know realized I

  1757. couldn't remember anything of

1758. the festival it's just one

1759. big blur my drinking is

1760. really getting out of hand

1761. I've got to stop this

1762. drinking so she signed up

1763. for AA join the club got

1764. clean got sober right but

1765. when she stopped drinking she

  1766. couldn't stop spending money

1767. she always get herself into

1768. debt credit card debts she

1769. buy expensive bags and shoes

  1770. and nice clothing and

  1771. accessories she get

1772. herself in credit card debt

1773. she then realized this is bad

1774. she'd save her pay off her

1775. debts and as soon as she paid

1776. off her debts she'd spoil

1777. herself with a big splurge

1778. right go and buy a nice

1779. handbag as a reward for

1780. paying off her debts what was

  1781. happening there what is

  1782. happening friends all those

1783. things were symptoms of a far

1784. deeper insecurity you see what

1785. is happening was even though

  1786. she'd call herself a Christian

1787. and served in church in many

1788. ways unfortunately she had no

1789. concept that she was loved and

1790. accepted by the one person in

  1791. the universe whose opinion

1792. really counts and so initially

1793. she'd throw herself at boys

1794. wanting to be loved and wanting

1795. to feel loved and lovable wanting

1796. to feel acceptable by the boys in

1797. her life she'd throw herself and

1798. give herself foolishly to these

1799. guys and they would just take

1800. advantage of her and then she

1801. realized this isn't good and so

1802. she'd try and numb the pain with

1803. alcohol and then realized this

1804. isn't good and so she'd try and

1805. buy expensive bags and shoes and

1806. clothing to make herself feel

1807. loved and lovable friends all those

1808. things were mere symptoms of a far

  1809. deeper insecurity Richard Lovelay

1810. said this Christians who are not

1811. sure that God loves and accepts

1812. them in Jesus are subconsciously

1813. radically insecure persons friends do

1814. you know the deeply profound profound

1815. love of God has it arrested your

1816. hearts has it brought about a deep

1817. security which is not only humbling

1818. you but also drawing you near softening

1819. your heart friends that's what the

1820. gospel does and that's why we must be

1821. a community which is continually being

1822. shaped by the good news of Jesus now

1823. there are a thousand applications of

1824. this but I want to just land with one

1825. of them pointing out the obvious when

1826. this gets in our hearts this will make

1827. us a completely new kind of community of

1828. course this church won't be perfect of

1829. course we will still make mistakes why

1830. because we still sinners we still

1831. flawed right the gospel doesn't deny

1832. that so we won't be a perfect community

1833. we will let each other down there'll be

1834. misunderstanding of course but you know

1835. what the gospel will make us a

1836. community which is gracious and not

1837. judgmental because we know that we're

1838. just as flawed as the person next to us and

1839. so we'll have to offer grace to them just

1840. as we've been offered grace when we see

1841. someone has let us down we're not on a

1842. high horse judging them but we see

1843. ourselves just as much in need of grace

1844. as them friends this will make us a

1845. forgiving and not a resentful community

1846. because as we meditate on the

1847. forgiveness of God towards us our hearts

1848. will be softened with love to forgive

1849. those around us it'll make us a

1850. vulnerable and not a defensive community

1851. you'll be able to come to church and

1852. don't have to have this squeaky clean

1853. image of perfect lives you'll come and

1854. we can just be real this is who I am

1855. this is the kind of week I've had

1856. because we know that everyone in the

1857. church is in the same position we don't

1858. have to show up put our best foot

1859. forward we can be full of weakness and

1860. fear and we people challenge us we

1861. don't need to get defensive because we

1862. will be secure in God's love friends

1863. those will make us a community which is

1864. real and not fake because the gospel

1865. gives us a security that allows us just

1866. to be ourselves can I just say one of

1867. the things that I love the most about

1868. watermark church as we've been here two

1869. years this is an incredibly real church

1870. one of the things that actually amazes

1871. me I've never encountered a church that

1872. is as real as watermark people can

1873. confess sin really people are just real

1874. this is who I am this is the kind of

1875. week I've had it's an incredible thing

1876. and that's the gospel that's at work

1877. within us the reason watermark is like

1878. that is because of for 10 years Tobin

1879. for six years the elders for years off

1880. that have been sharing the gospel with

1881. this community it'll make us real and

1882. not fake and finally it'll make us a

1883. community which is giving and not

1884. taking we don't need to look to others

1885. to get a whole lot of stuff on

  1886. affirmation we're securing God we're

1887. able to give ourselves away friends

1888. we're only beginning to scratch the

1889. surface of what the gospel is and what

1890. it means to be a gospel center church

1891. Paul writes to Romans and he says I

1892. long to be able to come to you to

1893. share the gospel with you to encourage

1894. you and you to encourage me I long to

1895. come and share the gospel to you for

1896. indeed I'm not ashamed of it it's the

1897. power of God for salvation for

1898. everyone who believes friends whatever

1899. we do let's continue to make sure that

1900. we are church that doesn't just talk

1901. about the gospel but loves trust obeys

1902. the Jesus of the gospel and as a

1903. result of that are being changed into

1904. his image from one degree to the next

  1905. let's pray together

1906. Lord Jesus we so thankful for

1907. so many things God we thank for God for

1908. simply who you are that you're glorious

1909. and majestic thank you Jesus for your

1910. for who you are but God not only who you

1911. are but also what you've done for us on

1912. the cross Jesus thank you that when we

1913. were far gone from you when we were at

1914. our worst you loved us enough to go to

1915. the cross and die for us God I pray for

1916. each one of us as a church each one of

1917. us here this morning God I pray Lord

1918. Jesus that the truth and the reality of

1919. the gospel won't just be things that we

1920. talk about but it really will get deep

1921. inside of our hearts it really will

1922. change us and transform us God I pray

1923. that we father will become more humble

1924. more gracious more gentle more generous

1925. more loving and kind as the gospel

1926. changes and transforms us God I pray

1927. that at the same time we'll be more

1928. secure Lord God oh father God come and

1929. wash us and flood us in the good news of

1930. Jesus God I pray that our identity be

1931. rooted in this and that though we are

1932. sinful and flawed that God your love for

1933. us covers over a multitude of sins

1934. Jesus I pray that these won't just be

1935. words father but these will be the deep

1936. reality of our hearts God come and cause

1937. revival to take hold of each one of us

1938. revive us we pray God revive our hearts

  1939. Lord

1940. father come and renew us I pray

1941. father for those of us that still look to

1942. our spiritual performance for some kind of

1943. confidence or assurance God won't you

  1944. humble us

1945. won't you humble us God

1946. God for those of us that feel

  1947. unloved unlovable

1948. for those of us that feel God insecure

1949. Christ come and change us come and give us a

1950. new identity come and let your love change

  1951. our hearts God

1952. father we don't just want to be religious

1953. people going through the motions we don't

1954. just want to do the Christian thing we

1955. want to be those that are in the deepest

1956. recesses of our hearts being changed by

  1957. you

1958. are becoming more like you

1959. because we secure in our relationship

1960. with you we are obeying you and trusting

  1961. you and loving you

1962. Christ come have your way I pray

1963. God bless you we are志 mate for'?
