  1. The scripture reading today comes from Colossians chapter 2 and 3.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin or on the screen.

  3. Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition,

  4. based on the elements of the world rather than Christ.

  5. For the entire fullness of God's nature dwells in bodily in Christ,

  6. and you have been fulfilled by him, who is the head over every ruler and authority.

  7. You were also circumcised in him with a circumcision not done with hands,

  8. by putting off the body of flesh in the circumcision of Christ,

  9. when you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him,

  10. through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

  11. And when you were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh,

  12. he made you alive with him and forgave us all our trespasses.

  13. He erased the certificate of debt with its obligations that was against us and opposed to us

  14. and has taken it away by nailing it to the cross.

  15. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly.

  16. He triumphed over them in him.

  17. Therefore, don't let anyone judge you in regard to food and drink

  18. or in the matter of a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day.

  19. These are a shadow of what was to come.

  20. The substance is Christ.

  21. Let no one condemn you by delighting in ascetic practices

  22. and a worship of angels, claiming access to a visionary realm.

  23. Such people are inflated by empty notions of their unspiritual mind.

  24. He doesn't hold on to the head, from whom the whole body,

  25. nourished and held together by its ligaments and tendons,

  26. grows with growth from God.

  27. If you died with Christ to the elements of this world,

  28. why do you live as if you still belong to the world?

  29. Why do you submit to regulations?

  30. Don't handle, don't taste, don't touch.

  31. All these regulations refer to what is destined to perish by being used up.

  32. They are human commands and doctrines.

  33. Although these have a reputation for wisdom by promoting self-made religion,

  34. false humility, and severe treatment of the body,

  35. they are not of any value in a curbing self-indulgence.

  36. So if you have been raised with Christ,

  37. seek the things above, where Christ is,

  38. seated at the right hand of God.

  39. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

  40. For you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

  41. When Christ, who is your life, appears,

  42. then you also will appear with him in glory.

  43. Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature,

  44. sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed,

  45. which is idolatry.

  46. Because of these, God's wrath is coming upon the disobedient,

  47. and you once walked in these things when you were living in them.

  48. But now, put away all the following,

  49. anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth.

  50. Do not lie to one another,

  51. since you have put off the old self with its practices

  52. and have put on the new self.

  53. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your creator.

  54. In Christ, there is no Greek and Jew,

  55. circumcision and uncircumcision,

  56. barbarian, Scythian, slave and three,

  57. but Christ is all and in all.

  58. This is the word of God.

  59. Great.

  60. Thank you, Christina and Jefferson.

  61. Will you join me as we pray?

  62. Let's spend a few minutes praying for ourselves

  63. and for our city and for our world together.

  64. Will you join me?

  65. Gracious Father, Lord Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit,

  66. we do come before you this morning

  67. to have our own hearts ministered to,

  68. to set our hearts aright with you,

  69. but also, God, to bring you worship and glory,

  70. to praise your name,

  71. to worship you for who you are.

  72. Father, this morning we are reminded

  73. that you are the sovereign, glorious God.

  74. As Angie reminded us earlier,

  75. there is no one like you in all creation, God.

  76. You are glorious and majestic,

  77. and yet you are also deeply personal.

  78. You are close and caring.

  79. You are compassionate, God,

  80. to the hurts in our hearts

  81. and, God, the hurts of our city.

  82. Father, thank you that you know our deepest concerns.

  83. You know everything about us.

  84. You know the fears and the anxieties,

  85. and, God, you are concerned about that with us.

  86. God, your heart is compassionate towards us.

  87. We do praise you for that, Lord.

  88. God, thank you that you alone hold these two tensions,

  89. your majesty and your mercy,

  90. your glory and your grace, God.

  91. Where could we find someone like you, God?

  92. In all creation, we could go to the ends of the earth, God.

  93. We could search for all eternity

  94. and not find anybody that comes close

  95. to your majesty and your mercy, God.

  96. And so we do come before you

  97. with such humble hearts

  98. and considered incredible privilege

  99. to be called your children.

  100. Father, this morning we've read,

  101. this morning in Colossians,

  102. as we ask, God, that it will be true of us.

  103. Lord, we pray that as a church

  104. and as followers of Jesus,

  105. we will not be deceived by human tradition,

  106. by human philosophy.

  107. We pray, God, that as Colossians has reminded us,

  108. we will hold fast to Christ.

  109. God, we pray that we won't be sidetracked

  110. by the shadows,

  111. but we'll come to know deeply, God,

  112. the substance of the gospel,

  113. which is you, Jesus Christ.

  114. We pray, God, that we won't be those

  115. that are interested in religion,

  116. but miss the person of Jesus.

  117. Oh, Christ, we pray,

  118. get the gospel deeper into us.

  119. God, help us to see and to savor you, Jesus,

  120. as our Lord.

  121. Help us, God, to apply the gospel

  122. to our own hearts and lives, God.

  123. Help us, God, to see our sin

  124. and yet to revel in the good news of Jesus.

  125. God, we really do pray

  126. that as a church, Watermark,

  127. whatever else happens, God,

  128. may one thing be true of us.

  129. May the gospel get deeper into us

  130. as a church, we pray.

  131. Father, come and pray

  132. for a move of your spirit amongst us.

  133. We pray, revive our hearts, oh God.

  134. Lord, where our faith has become dry,

  135. oh God, let the water of your spirit

  136. come and revive our hearts,

  137. the wind of your spirit revive us, God.

  138. God, come be at work in our church, we pray,

  139. and start with each one of us.

  140. Father, this morning, we want to also pray

  141. for our city and our world

  142. and our neighbors in mainland China

  143. as we think of the coronavirus.

  144. God, we pray for those that are affected

  145. and infected and suffering.

  146. We pray for those that are in hospital,

  147. those that are at home and are sick.

  148. God, we pray for your grace and your mercy

  149. to minister to them.

  150. Lord, we want to pray for families

  151. of those that are suffering,

  152. especially over Chinese New Year

  153. when families would normally come together.

  154. We pray, God, where families are apart

  155. or are unable to travel.

  156. We pray that you, God,

  157. will minister to those families.

  158. We pray, God, for the medical staff

  159. and for doctors,

  160. and especially those in Wuhan

  161. that are working so hard

  162. many, many hours.

  163. God, we pray for their protection.

  164. We pray they won't be infected.

  165. But we also pray, God,

  166. that you just strengthen them,

  167. encourage them in this time.

  168. We pray for our government officials, God,

  169. that you will give them profound wisdom

  170. how to handle this.

  171. God, put policies in place

  172. that will stop the spread,

  173. and yet, God, not be harsh and hard.

  174. God, may we be a sympathetic people.

  175. May we be gracious.

  176. And Father, we pray for Christians

  177. that as a church,

  178. we will move towards the pain.

  179. God, we won't just think about ourselves

  180. and distance ourselves,

  181. but we will move towards those that are hurting,

  182. have compassion in our hearts

  183. and sympathy and empathy.

  184. God, we pray for us.

  185. And finally, Father,

  186. we pray for this Chinese New Year period.

  187. We pray for the Watermark family.

  188. We pray as families are traveling around the world,

  189. won't you be with each one of us.

  190. I pray for good family times

  191. around the dining room table,

  192. around meals.

  193. As we are visiting family,

  194. we pray for warm hearts and soft hearts, God.

  195. God, we pray that you help us

  196. to be salt and light in this time.

  197. And Christ, we pray for you to give us opportunities

  198. to share the hope of the gospel,

  199. the reason for the hope that is within us

  200. with our family and our loved ones in this time.

  201. Christ, may this be a great time

  202. for the gospel to go forward

  203. in our homes, in our families,

  204. and the various cities of the world

  205. as we travel.

  206. And so we do, God, bring this weekend before you

  207. and ask your spirit to fill us

  208. and to lead us and to guide us.

  209. We pray these things in your wonderful name.

  210. Amen.

  211. Amen.

  212. Amen.

  213. Okay, well, good morning, everybody.

  214. Sonny Phylock.

  215. I probably said that all horribly wrong,

  216. but happy new year.

  217. It's great to see a bunch of people

  218. and it's great to see some new people,

  219. some guests, some visitors.

  220. Welcome.

  221. Wonderful to have you with us.

  222. If you are from out of town

  223. and you're visiting Hong Kong at this time,

  224. a warm welcome to you

  225. and welcome to Watermark.

  226. As a church, for the last couple of weeks,

  227. we've been exploring what the Bible has to say

  228. about the gospel.

  229. What is the gospel

  230. and what are its implications for our lives?

  231. Why is it that as followers of Jesus,

  232. we need to make sure that the gospel

  233. is front and central in our lives,

  234. not just one of 17 priorities in our life,

  235. but really front and central.

  236. And we've been exploring that for a couple of weeks.

  237. And so, so far we've seen that the gospel

  238. is God's announcement of good news.

  239. It's not just God's good advice

  240. about how we should live our lives,

  241. even though it does have implications

  242. for how we should live our lives.

  243. It is God's announcement of his good news

  244. that God has done for us,

  245. in the person of Jesus,

  246. what we could never do for ourselves.

  247. Jesus lived the life we should have lived.

  248. Jesus died the death that we should have died.

  249. God, Jesus went to the cross and died

  250. so that when we put our faith in him,

  251. our sin is credited to him

  252. and we don't bear the consequences for our sin.

  253. That's the good news of the gospel.

  254. But we've also seen,

  255. I've tried to show us the last few weeks,

  256. that as followers of Jesus,

  257. we constantly need to get the gospel

  258. deeper into our own hearts and our own lives.

  259. If we're gonna become anything like the people

  260. that God is calling us to be,

  261. we have to be those that are constantly meditating

  262. on the beauty and the wonder of the gospel.

  263. And one of the reasons for that

  264. is the way that we change as human beings

  265. is, or let me put it this way,

  266. we will never really change

  267. unless we confront the stuff that's in our hearts.

  268. Unless we really look at what's in our hearts,

  269. what's going on in our lives,

  270. what's the motivation behind the fears

  271. and the anxieties and the things that we do,

  272. unless we really explore the deep recesses of our hearts,

  273. we never really change.

  274. But the gospel alone gives us a security

  275. to be able to do that.

  276. The gospel gives us an identity

  277. that allows us to really explore

  278. what's going on in our hearts

  279. without crushing us,

  280. without making us feel like failures.

  281. And so the gospel gives us the power to change.

  282. And then last week we saw Oscar shared with us

  283. how the gospel gives us a new identity.

  284. 2 Corinthians says we are new creations in Christ.

  285. The old is gone.

  286. The new has come.

  287. The gospel gives us a new heart,

  288. a new motivation.

  289. Jesus doesn't just come and help us to fix our lives up

  290. or to make us slightly nicer people.

  291. He completely revolutionizes the interior of our lives.

  292. And so what this means is that as a church,

  293. one of the things that I've been trying to impress upon us

  294. is we must get the gospel deeper inside of us.

  295. And so I want you to know

  296. that that is the prayer that I have prayed for myself

  297. and it's the prayer that I've prayed for us as a church

  298. more than anything else over the last two years.

  299. More than praying God grow us as a church,

  300. even though that's not a bad thing.

  301. More than God give us more finances,

  302. though I have prayed that as well.

  303. The one prayer that I've prayed more than anything else

  304. is God for Watermark, for me.

  305. Help us get the gospel deeper into our hearts.

  306. And so prayer, I'm gonna keep on praying for us.

  307. Now today I want us to look at

  308. how the gospel relates to

  309. the moral and ethical commands of the scripture.

  310. Okay?

  311. So how the gospel, the good news of Jesus,

  312. relates to where Jesus calls us to obedience,

  313. to follow him and to love him,

  314. and to the moral and ethical commands of scripture.

  315. Now there's a bunch of ways that we can get it wrong.

  316. Okay?

  317. There's two ways that we can get

  318. the commands of scripture wrong,

  319. but there's a gospel way that is completely different.

  320. And I want us to look at that today.

  321. Now, and we're gonna do that

  322. by looking at the book of Colossians,

  323. but we'll get there in a bit.

  324. I wanna set up a framework first,

  325. and then we're gonna come to Colossians.

  326. In the book of Galatians, chapter two,

  327. the apostle Paul does an amazing thing.

  328. He confronts and he challenges another apostle

  329. the apostle Peter over his hypocritical behavior.

  330. So Peter, this apostle that walks with Jesus,

  331. at one point he's acting one way

  332. in front of one group of people.

  333. Then there's another crowd,

  334. and he starts to change his behavior

  335. and act a different way.

  336. And the apostle Paul calls him out on his behavior.

  337. But the interesting thing is,

  338. Paul doesn't go to Peter and say,

  339. hey Peter, you've broken the Exodus 17 law

  340. by acting hypocritical.

  341. Paul doesn't go and say,

  342. hey Peter, you've just broken the Matthew 23 rule

  343. in the Bible by your hypocritical behavior.

  344. What does Paul do when he challenges Peter's hypocrisy?

  345. He says, Peter, your behavior is not in step

  346. or not in line with the gospel.

  347. You see that?

  348. He could have gone to the Bible and said,

  349. look Peter, there's this verse that says,

  350. treat your neighbors as yourself, love others.

  351. He could have done that, but he doesn't.

  352. He says, Peter, your behavior, your conduct

  353. is offline, is veering off

  354. from the conduct of the gospel.

  355. In other words, Paul is saying to Peter,

  356. your hypocrisy is not merely a behavior,

  357. it's a gospel issue.

  358. Okay, does that make sense?

  359. Paul challenges Peter,

  360. not because Peter's broken the rules,

  361. but because there's a disconnect

  362. between Peter's actions

  363. and the life that the gospel produces.

  364. And friends, you've got to believe

  365. that if that can happen to the apostle Peter,

  366. the guy who walked with Jesus for three years,

  367. who saw him being crucified,

  368. who saw him being raised from the dead,

  369. Peter who preached the gospel on Pentecost

  370. and 3,000 people got saved,

  371. if Peter can forget the gospel

  372. and so his behavior veers off

  373. from the conduct of the gospel,

  374. friends, you've got to believe

  375. that it can happen to you and to I.

  376. And so how does our behavior

  377. disconnect from the gospel?

  378. How do we get it wrong?

  379. Well, I'm so glad you've asked that question.

  380. That joke is so old.

  381. I've really got to stop saying that.

  382. Okay, I'm so sorry.

  383. I will try my best to stop saying that.

  384. There's two ways that we can get it wrong.

  385. I don't know if you've ever been horse riding.

  386. Okay, in this rural setting of ours called Hong Kong,

  387. we don't have too many horses.

  388. The only time I've ever been horse riding,

  389. I was in Mongolia.

  390. I was 19 years old.

  391. I was visiting a friend there

  392. and he had some horses

  393. and so we're out in the countryside

  394. and he says, come, let's saddle up

  395. and I'll show you how to ride a horse.

  396. And so I get on this horse

  397. and at first, you know, we are walking slowly

  398. and then the horse starts trotting gently

  399. and after five minutes,

  400. I can feel myself leaning to the one side

  401. and I can still remember,

  402. I can still picture remembering,

  403. this is not a good thing, right?

  404. And so more and more and more

  405. and after five minutes,

  406. I was being dragged on the Mongolian countryside

  407. by this runaway horse, okay?

  408. And eventually I let go

  409. and my friend holds onto his horse,

  410. grabs the other horse's reins

  411. and then they split.

  412. They go separate ways.

  413. And so it pulls him off his horse

  414. and he's being dragged

  415. holding onto these two horses

  416. across the Mongolian countryside

  417. and eventually he reined them in.

  418. What were we talking about?

  419. This is the point.

  420. This is the point.

  421. Like riding a horse

  422. or a bicycle without hands, right?

  423. You can fall off on two ways, okay?

  424. You think you're getting it right

  425. and before you know,

  426. you're on the ground.

  427. You can fall to the left

  428. or you can fall to the right.

  429. There's two ways

  430. that we can get the gospel wrong.

  431. Two opposite but equal errors that we make.

  432. The first one is what we could call

  433. moralism or performance Christianity.

  434. Performance Christianity.

  435. It's where we think that

  436. our acceptance of God,

  437. or God's acceptance for us,

  438. or God's love for us

  439. on theological language,

  440. our justification is based upon

  441. our moral or our spiritual performance.

  442. Essentially how good a Christian you are, okay?

  443. So remember this quote

  444. from Richard Lovelace a few weeks ago?

  445. He said this,

  446. most Christians intellectually know

  447. in our heads that God accepts us

  448. because of what Jesus did on the cross.

  449. But in our actual day-to-day existence,

  450. most of us rely on our spiritual

  451. or moral performance

  452. to assure us of God's love and acceptance.

  453. Either our spiritual sincerity

  454. or our past experience of conversion

  455. or our recent religious performance

  456. or the relative infrequency of conscious sin.

  457. Okay, so I've got some props here.

  458. Sorry, I'm not very good at props,

  459. but let's see if we can get this going, okay?

  460. So this is what Richard Lovelace is saying.

  461. For most Christians,

  462. this is what we believe, okay?

  463. We believe that,

  464. we believe the gospel,

  465. Jesus died on the cross for our sins,

  466. plus my good works,

  467. my moral performance,

  468. my obedience to Jesus.

  469. And if I can get these two things right,

  470. then God will love me and accept me.

  471. Okay?

  472. Does that make sense?

  473. So most of us think.

  474. Faith in Jesus plus good works

  475. or obedience or moral performance

  476. leads to my salvation or my acceptance.

  477. Friends, think about that for a second.

  478. How many of us think or feel

  479. that God's love for us

  480. or his acceptance of us

  481. is based on our recent moral,

  482. spiritual performance,

  483. our recent lack of sin,

  484. or some other thing that we've done for God?

  485. Now the problem with this is many.

  486. One of the problems is

  487. it makes us insecure about God's love for us, right?

  488. Because if our feeling of how much God loves us

  489. depends on our performance,

  490. or you have a good week,

  491. you feel like, yes, God loves me.

  492. You have a bad week,

  493. oh, God doesn't love me anymore.

  494. We feel insecure about God's love for us.

  495. Remember Richard Lovelace said,

  496. Christians who are not sure

  497. that God loves and accepts us in Jesus,

  498. apart from our spiritual performance,

  499. are subconsciously radically insecure persons.

  500. But ironically,

  501. it also makes us judgmental and arrogant

  502. because we cannot help looking down

  503. at people that aren't performing as well as us.

  504. So I think I'm a pretty good Christian,

  505. but I look at my friend Leo there,

  506. and shame,

  507. he's not doing as well as me,

  508. and you know,

  509. I just,

  510. I can't help but feel better about myself.

  511. But you know what,

  512. also when I'm having a bad week

  513. and I'm not doing that well,

  514. and Leo is suddenly amazing,

  515. he's on stage,

  516. and he's leading worship,

  517. what do I do?

  518. I find somebody else

  519. that I think I'm doing better at.

  520. I cannot help

  521. to find somebody lower than me

  522. in order to feel better about myself.

  523. And so Christians that operate like this

  524. are naturally judgmental

  525. and arrogant

  526. and bigoted.

  527. Here's the third thing it does.

  528. It makes us deny

  529. and cover up our sin

  530. because we just cannot look

  531. at what's really going on in our hearts.

  532. To look at the real stuff

  533. that's going on in our hearts

  534. is just too painful.

  535. It makes me feel like a failure.

  536. And so I cannot help but cover up

  537. and deny

  538. or what I tend to do

  539. is get defensive

  540. or I will admit

  541. to some minor sin,

  542. some lesser indiscretion

  543. in order to avoid

  544. the real things

  545. that's going on in my heart.

  546. Kristen this week

  547. reminded me of

  548. a pastor a few years ago

  549. who was caught embezzling money,

  550. right?

  551. So taking money

  552. from the church coffers

  553. and redirecting it

  554. to a family business.

  555. He was convicted of this

  556. and put in jail.

  557. But when he had to face

  558. his congregation,

  559. this is what he said.

  560. He said,

  561. I'm so sorry

  562. if I've caused any hurt

  563. or offense.

  564. You see?

  565. It's so much easier

  566. to admit to some lesser sinner,

  567. I'm sorry if I've hurt you

  568. or caused offense,

  569. rather than saying,

  570. I'm wrong.

  571. I shouldn't have done that.

  572. I'm a sinner.

  573. Right?

  574. But the problem is

  575. that when we do that,

  576. we never really change.

  577. In order to really change,

  578. we have to be able

  579. to look at what's going

  580. in our hearts,

  581. to have an honest assessment

  582. and bring stuff to the light.

  583. But here's the fourth problem

  584. with this,

  585. is that it blinds us

  586. to seeing the reality

  587. and the beauty

  588. and the majesty

  589. of Jesus.

  590. That's the problem

  591. with the Pharisees,

  592. right?

  593. Remember the Pharisees?

  594. They're always judgmental,

  595. they're always arrogant,

  596. they're always doing things wrong,

  597. but the problem is

  598. they never see

  599. the beauty of Jesus.

  600. Remember in John chapter 9,

    John 9 chapter mention

  601. Jesus heals somebody

  602. and they say,

  603. he must be casting out demons

  604. by satanic power.

  605. Rather than just saying,

  606. man, Jesus,

  607. who are you?

  608. Or they say,

  609. this man must be a sinner.

  610. There's something about Jesus.

  611. They cannot see

  612. the beauty of Jesus.

  613. Friends,

  614. when we believe

  615. that God's love

  616. and acceptance of us

  617. is partly based

  618. on how well we perform,

  619. it'll blind us

  620. to the beauty of the gospel,

  621. to the wonder of Jesus,

  622. to the majesty

  623. of his grace,

  624. to the problem

  625. of sin in our lives

  626. and how glorious he is.

  627. That's the problem

  628. of performance Christianity.

  629. But then there's another side

  630. that we can fall off the horse,

  631. okay?

  632. You don't fall off this side,

  633. you can fall off the other side.

  634. And that's what we could call

  635. licensed Christianity

  636. or relativism.

  637. And that says,

  638. because we are saved

  639. by grace alone,

  640. because Jesus died

  641. on the cross

  642. to cover our sins,

  643. obedience to Jesus,

  644. the ethical commands

  645. of the scripture

  646. are all relative.

  647. They're not really important.

  648. Jesus died

  649. to cover our sin.

  650. It's okay.

  651. And so what this is,

  652. is faith in Jesus

  653. simply means

  654. God loves

  655. and accepts us

  656. and who cares

  657. about good works

  658. or obedience anyway?

  659. Because Jesus died

  660. to cover our sins,

  661. right?

  662. In other words,

  663. when we think

  664. that the gospel

  665. is simply

  666. pray a prayer

  667. or put your hand up

  668. and you've got

  669. life insurance

  670. and fire insurance

  671. from hell

  672. and everything's

  673. going to be rosy,

  674. well you're suddenly

  675. given a license

  676. to do whatever you want.

  677. You can sin

  678. however you want,

  679. you can say

  680. whatever you want,

  681. live however you want,

  682. because Jesus

  683. is some big

  684. grandfather in the sky

  685. that just

  686. loves to forgive.

  687. Remember Voltaire

  688. on his deathbed,

  689. he supposedly said this,

  690. of course God's

  691. going to forgive me.

  692. That's his job,

  693. right?

  694. Or some people think

  695. I enjoy sinning,

  696. God enjoys forgiving sins.

  697. This is a good arrangement.

  698. But friends,

  699. if that's how we think

  700. of the gospel,

  701. there's many problems.

  702. One is the problem

  703. is it'll again

  704. blind us to the beauty

  705. and the reality of Jesus,

  706. but the other problem

  707. is it'll never deal

  708. with the real stuff

  709. that's going in our hearts

  710. and we never

  711. therefore change.

  712. We never change.

  713. Look at what Paul

  714. says to Peter here.

  715. When Peter

  716. is acting hypocritically,

  717. what does he do?

  718. He calls him out

  719. and he says,

  720. Peter,

  721. you're not walking

  722. in step with the gospel.

  723. He says,

  724. because the gospel

  725. is true,

  726. because Jesus

  727. died on the cross,

  728. the righteous

  729. for the unrighteous

  730. that he might bring us

  731. to God,

  732. this has implications

  733. for our lives.

  734. How we treat people,

  735. how we forgive those

  736. that have hurt us,

  737. whether we fear people,

  738. what we do with grudges

  739. and unforgiveness

  740. in our hearts,

  741. how we handle money

  742. and sexuality.

  743. There is a gospel conduct

  744. which is not the essence

  745. of the gospel.

  746. The essence of the gospel

  747. is Jesus died on the cross

  748. for sinners like me

  749. and sinners like you.

  750. That's the essence,

  751. but there is a consequence

  752. of the gospel

  753. which is our conduct.

  754. In other words,

  755. the life of the Christian

  756. looks something like this.

  757. Let's see if I can get

  758. this maths right.

  759. I was never really good

  760. at maths,

  761. but let's see if I can

  762. get this right.

  763. The life of the Christian

  764. looks something like this.

  765. Faith in Jesus Christ

  766. leads to our salvation.

  767. But our salvation,

  768. because it changes us,

  769. it gives us a new identity,

  770. a new motivation,

  771. a new heart,

  772. does lead to a new

  773. kind of lifestyle,

  774. a good works,

  775. an obedience,

  776. a morality that is different

  777. from our life

  778. apart from Jesus.

  779. Obeying the ethical teachings

  780. of the Bible

  781. doesn't contribute

  782. to your salvation at all.

  783. Not one little bit,

  784. but it is a consequence

  785. of loving and trusting Jesus.

  786. Obeying the teachings

  787. of Jesus,

  788. loving and trusting Him

  789. doesn't contribute

  790. to God's acceptance

  791. of you at all,

  792. but it is a consequence

  793. that does flow out

  794. of God's acceptance

  795. for you.

  796. Friends,

  797. if on the one hand

  798. we approach God

  799. either out of performance

  800. mindset,

  801. like I've got to earn

  802. God's love

  803. by my good moral works,

  804. or if on the other hand

  805. we approach God

  806. out of license mindset,

  807. anything goes.

  808. I can just sin like I want

  809. because who cares?

  810. Jesus is coming for it.

  811. Both of those problems

  812. will rob us

  813. of the power of the gospel

  814. to change us.

  815. Both of those

  816. will rob the gospel

  817. of its power

  818. to save us,

  819. but both of those

  820. will also rob us

  821. of the beauty of Jesus,

  822. of the horror of sin

  823. in our lives,

  824. of the wonder

  825. of what Jesus did

  826. on the cross for us.

  827. both of those

  828. will leave us

  829. with the gospel

  830. being irrelevant

  831. and powerless

  832. in our lives.

  833. And that brings us

  834. to Colossians chapter 2.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  835. In Colossians chapter 2,

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  836. the apostle Paul

  837. is going to unpack

  838. the gospel

  839. and then he's going

  840. to show us

  841. how both of these errors

  842. are wrong

  843. and to call us

  844. to Jesus.

  845. Okay?

  846. In the beginning

  847. of chapter 2,

  848. he says this.

  849. He says,

  850. Brothers and sisters,

  851. I want you to know

  852. how much I have been

  853. wrestling and struggling

  854. with you

  855. that you may know

  856. deeply and be

  857. deeply assured

  858. of the hope

  859. of the gospel

  860. which is Christ in you,

  861. the hope of glory.

  862. So Paul says,

  863. I've been wrestling,

  864. I've been struggling

  865. in prayer.

  866. I've sent Epaphras

  867. from Rome

  868. all the way to Colossae.

  869. I'm doing everything I can.

  870. I want you to know,

  871. brothers and sisters,

  872. deeply in your hearts

  873. the riches of Christ in you,

  874. the hope of glory.

  875. Okay?

  876. That's what he says

  877. in verses 1 to 4.

  878. And then in verses 8 to 15,

  879. he unpacks

  880. what is this gospel.

  881. I don't know

  882. if you've ever had

  883. friends or family members

  884. visiting you from afar

  885. and they open their suitcase

  886. and there's a whole lot

  887. of goodies and treats inside.

  888. Do you know what I mean?

  889. No?

  890. Okay.

  891. Last,

  892. about a year ago,

  893. my parents-in-law,

  894. Claire's parents,

  895. came to visit us

  896. for Christmas.

  897. And it was Claire's dad's

  898. first time in Hong Kong.

  899. And so they opened

  900. their suitcase

  901. and there were all these

  902. treats from South Africa.

  903. First thing,

  904. rooibos tea.

  905. Great South African tea.

  906. Okay?

  907. Second thing,

  908. zoo biscuits.

  909. Zoo biscuits are like

  910. these wonderful cookies

  911. that our kids love.

  912. Okay?

  913. Third thing,

  914. a home-baked Christmas cake.

  915. A massive Christmas cake

  916. baked by my mother-in-law.

  917. The fourth thing,

  918. a frozen leg of lamb.

  919. Okay?

  920. We wanted roast lamb

  921. for Christmas.

  922. They figured it was cheap

  923. in South Africa.

  924. They put it in their suitcase.

  925. Cathay Pacific didn't know

  926. they were bringing

  927. roast lamb into Hong Kong.

  928. Okay?

  929. That's kind of what Paul

  930. is going to do now

  931. in the next couple of verses.

  932. He's opening his gospel suitcase

  933. and he's going to bring out

  934. one truth after another

  935. of showing these Colossians

  936. what is the gospel

  937. and then he's going to show

  938. the implications of it.

  939. So let's look at what he says.

  940. Look at verse 8.

  941. Okay?

  942. He says this in verse 8.

  943. Sorry,

  944. can you see the slides?

  945. Should I move these things?

  946. Okay, let's...

  947. You get the point.

  948. Okay?

  949. Let's move that out the way.

  950. In verse 8,

  951. he says this.

  952. Be careful

  953. that no one takes you captive

  954. through human philosophy,

  955. empty deceit

  956. based on human tradition,

  957. based on the elements

  958. of this world

  959. rather than Christ.

  960. So he's saying,

  961. brothers and sisters,

  962. Watermark Church,

  963. make sure that you don't get

  964. veered off the gospel,

  965. don't fall off the horse

  966. by human tradition

  967. and human philosophy.

  968. Make sure that Jesus,

  969. who Christ is,

  970. is front and central

  971. in your eyes.

  972. Then in verse 9,

  973. he pulls out

  974. the first gospel truth

  975. out of his bag.

  976. Look at what he says.

  977. For the entire fullness

  978. of God's nature

  979. dwells bodily in Christ

  980. and you have been filled

  981. in Him.

  982. So Paul is saying here,

  983. a Christian is not just

  984. someone who's had

  985. their sins forgiven,

  986. though that is true.

  987. A Christian is not just

  988. somebody who one day

  989. will get to be with God

  990. in glory,

  991. though that is true.

  992. A Christian is someone

  993. who is now spiritually

  994. united with God

  995. in Christ.

  996. There is a fusion

  997. that has taken place.

  998. It's like a marriage.

  999. The two have become one.

  1000. Christ is in us

1001. and we are in Christ.

  1002. Every good promise

  1003. of the gospel

1004. is a result of us

  1005. being united

  1006. or fused

  1007. into Christ.

  1008. So the reason why

  1009. as a Christian

  1010. your sins are forgiven

  1011. is not just because

  1012. God offers this

  1013. blanket amnesty

  1014. to anyone.

  1015. It's not just because

  1016. God is this kind

  1017. grandfather in the sky

  1018. that just loves

  1019. to dish out forgiveness.

  1020. It's because

  1021. we have been fused

  1022. and united

  1023. with Jesus

  1024. and what happened

  1025. to Jesus

  1026. happens to us.

  1027. And so Jesus

  1028. dies on the cross,

  1029. pays the penalty

  1030. for sin,

  1031. it is finished

  1032. and that

  1033. dealing with sin

  1034. is now credited

  1035. to us

  1036. because we are

  1037. in Christ.

  1038. The life that Jesus

  1039. lived is now

  1040. our life.

  1041. The death that Jesus

  1042. died is now credited

  1043. to us.

  1044. Jesus' acceptance

  1045. before the Father

1046. is now given to us

  1047. because we are

  1048. in Christ.

  1049. Christ is in us

1050. and we are in Christ.

  1051. Does that make sense?

  1052. Okay.

  1053. The first gospel truth.

  1054. Second thing,

  1055. look where he pulls

  1056. out his bag here.

  1057. Look at verse 11.

  1058. He says,

  1059. you were also

  1060. circumcised with him

  1061. when you were buried

  1062. with him

  1063. in baptism.

  1064. In the New Testament,

  1065. circumcision

  1066. is always a picture

  1067. of cutting off

1068. the old way of life

  1069. and dealing with it

  1070. and moving on

1071. to a new way of life.

  1072. Okay?

  1073. So you cut off

1074. the past way of thinking,

  1075. old behavior,

  1076. old way of life,

  1077. and you're welcomed

1078. into a new way of life.

  1079. It's kind of like

  1080. the picture of baptism.

  1081. When you get baptized,

1082. you go under the water.

  1083. Hopefully,

  1084. we bring you out

  1085. of the water again.

1086. You go under the water.

  1087. It's a picture

  1088. of your old life

  1089. being buried.

  1090. It's dead.

  1091. And you come out

  1092. of the water.

  1093. It's a picture

  1094. of your new life

  1095. in Christ.

1096. The old is cut off.

  1097. It's done away with.

  1098. It's dead.

  1099. It's buried.

  1100. The new life

  1101. is given to you

  1102. in Christ.

  1103. Baptism is a picture

  1104. of that.

  1105. Paul is saying

  1106. this is what happens

  1107. when you're born again

  1108. in the gospel.

1109. Your old way of life,

  1110. your old self,

  1111. with its selfish motivations,

  1112. ambitions,

  1113. and passes away,

1114. your old way of living

  1115. for yourself,

  1116. by yourself,

  1117. with your only hope

  1118. being in yourself,

  1119. that has died.

  1120. It's been cut off.

  1121. It is buried.

  1122. And now you're given

  1123. a new identity

  1124. in Christ.

  1125. This is what Oscar

1126. was telling us last week.

1127. If anyone is in Christ,

1128. he is a new creation.

  1129. The old has gone.

  1130. The new has come.

  1131. It's kind of like,

  1132. and this is not

  1133. a great analogy,

  1134. so work with me

  1135. for a second.

  1136. Just imagine,

  1137. your father

1138. has got an old car.

  1139. Okay?

1140. An old blue Toyota van.

  1141. Burn it.

  1142. Okay?

1143. You've got an old car.

  1144. And it's always

  1145. costing money.

  1146. It's always

  1147. breaking down.

  1148. The seats are torn.

  1149. The steering wheel

1150. is a little bit dodgy.

  1151. And your father's

  1152. got this old car,

  1153. and he's always

  1154. late for meetings

  1155. because he's breaking down

1156. on the side of the road.

  1157. And you get given

  1158. this massive bonus

  1159. at work one day,

  1160. and so you decide,

  1161. I'm going to buy

1162. my dad a new car.

  1163. Okay?

  1164. Finally.

1165. So you go to your dad.

1166. Dad, he has a brand new Tesla.

  1167. Out of the box.

  1168. Brand spanking new.

  1169. And your dad

  1170. is so grateful.

  1171. He's so pleased.

  1172. Thank you so much.

  1173. A month later,

  1174. you're driving

  1175. down the road,

  1176. and you see

  1177. this old blue van

  1178. with its hood up

1179. on the side of the road,

  1180. and your dad

1181. is peering into the hood

  1182. looking at what's wrong

  1183. with his broken car.

1184. And so you pull over

  1185. and you say,

1186. Dad, what's up with this car?

  1187. Where's your Tesla

  1188. that I gave you?

  1189. And he says,

  1190. No, no.

  1191. Thank you so much

  1192. for the gift.

1193. I took out the seats

1194. and I've put them in here.

1195. I took out the steering wheel

  1196. from the Tesla

1197. and I've put it in my car.

  1198. It is so much

  1199. more comfortable.

  1200. Thank you for making

  1201. my blue Toyota

  1202. so much more comfortable.

1203. If only I can fix the engine,

1204. it drives so much nicer now.

  1205. Does that make sense?

1206. That would be crazy, right?

  1207. Friends,

  1208. Jesus doesn't come

  1209. to just help us

  1210. improve our lives.

  1211. Jesus didn't come

  1212. just to give us

  1213. new car seats

1214. or to make our lives

  1215. slightly better.

  1216. Jesus says,

  1217. The old is gone.

  1218. You've been circumcised

  1219. in Christ.

  1220. You've been buried

  1221. in baptism.

  1222. The old life

  1223. is thrown away.

  1224. He has given you

  1225. a new life

  1226. in Christ.

  1227. Friends,

  1228. because the gospel

1229. gives us a new heart,

  1230. a new motivation,

1231. that means that we will

  1232. act and behave differently.

1233. We will fear people less.

  1234. We will love

  1235. our enemies more.

  1236. We will give away

  1237. more money.

1238. We will love our wives

  1239. and our children.

  1240. But these things

1241. are done as a consequence

  1242. of God's love

  1243. and acceptance

  1244. melting and shaping

  1245. our hearts,

1246. not in order to try

  1247. and earn God's love

  1248. and acceptance.

1249. Look at the third thing

  1250. Paul pulls out

  1251. of his bag.

  1252. He says this,

  1253. verse 13,

  1254. Previously,

  1255. because of our sin,

  1256. we were dead

  1257. in trespasses,

1258. but now he has made

  1259. us alive with Christ

  1260. for giving us

  1261. our sins.

  1262. When the Bible says

  1263. that apart from God,

  1264. we are dead

  1265. in our sins,

  1266. that doesn't mean,

  1267. he's not talking

  1268. about physical inability.

  1269. It's not like

  1270. half of your cells

  1271. in your body

  1272. are dead

  1273. and then you become

  1274. a Christian

  1275. and your cells

  1276. wake up

  1277. and come alive.

  1278. He's not talking

  1279. about mental incapacity.

1280. Your brain is half dead

  1281. but you become

  1282. a Christian

  1283. and suddenly you can

  1284. think new thoughts.

  1285. He's not talking

  1286. about personality,

  1287. even though some people

  1288. maybe do need

  1289. a fresh personality

  1290. awakening.

  1291. What he's talking

  1292. about is that

  1293. the most important

  1294. part of our lives,

  1295. our relationship

  1296. with God,

  1297. our heart,

  1298. and knowing God

  1299. and walking with Him

  1300. is dead,

  1301. spiritually dead.

1302. We are dead to God

  1303. and God is dead

  1304. to us spiritually.

  1305. We are blind

1306. to the glory of Jesus,

  1307. deaf to the voice

  1308. of His Spirit.

  1309. We have no love

  1310. for God,

  1311. no awareness

  1312. of His presence,

  1313. no conviction of sin,

1314. no longing to please Him

  1315. and know Him.

  1316. That's our state

  1317. outside of Christ.

  1318. But in the Gospels

  1319. we see God reaches

  1320. into the deepest

  1321. and the most fundamental

  1322. part of our lives

  1323. and our hearts

  1324. and He breathes

  1325. fresh life into us.

  1326. He pours His love

  1327. into our hearts

  1328. that causes

  1329. the deepest part

1330. of us to come alive,

  1331. to know God

  1332. and to love Him,

  1333. to trust Him

1334. and to walk with Him

  1335. and to obey Him.

  1336. And that, friends,

  1337. changes everything.

  1338. It changes the way

  1339. we relate to people.

  1340. It changes the way

  1341. we handle success

  1342. but it also changes

  1343. the way we handle

  1344. disappointments.

  1345. It frees us up

1346. to love and serve people

  1347. without strings

  1348. being attached.

  1349. It allows us

1350. to give of our time

  1351. and our lives

  1352. but not in order

  1353. to receive God's love

  1354. but because we have

  1355. received it.

1356. Look at the final thing

  1357. that He says

  1358. in verse 14 and 15.

1359. This is the roast leg of lamb.

1360. This is the big one.

  1361. He says,

  1362. all of this

  1363. is because Jesus

  1364. died on the cross

  1365. to take our sin,

  1366. our record of death,

1367. He took it to the cross,

1368. He nailed it to the cross

1369. and He left it there.

  1370. Friends,

  1371. the record of death

  1372. in my life,

  1373. my sin,

  1374. has been nailed

  1375. to the cross

  1376. and is left there

  1377. no longer

  1378. to be held

  1379. against me.

  1380. Remember that old hymn?

  1381. He took my sins

  1382. and my sorrows,

  1383. He made them

  1384. His very own,

  1385. He bore the burden

  1386. to Calvary

  1387. and suffered

  1388. and died alone.

  1389. How marvelous,

  1390. how wonderful

1391. our song shall ever be.

  1392. How marvelous,

  1393. how wonderful

  1394. is my Savior's love

  1395. for me.

  1396. Friends,

  1397. that's the wonder

  1398. of what Jesus did

  1399. on the cross.

  1400. He died for sinners

  1401. like you and I

  1402. to welcome us

  1403. into His family.

  1404. Now,

1405. we're going to wrap up soon.

  1406. Paul then goes

1407. in the rest of chapter 2 and 3

  1408. and actually the rest

  1409. of Colossians,

  1410. he unpacks the implications

  1411. for this.

  1412. What are the implications?

  1413. There's many,

1414. but I want us just to focus

  1415. on two of them.

  1416. The first implication

  1417. is this,

  1418. because of the gospel,

  1419. forsake performance

  1420. Christianity.

1421. Don't fall off the horse.

  1422. Because of the gospel,

  1423. get rid of performance

  1424. Christianity,

  1425. get rid of

  1426. dead religious rituals.

1427. Look at how he says this

  1428. in verse 16.

  1429. He says,

  1430. because of the truth

  1431. of the gospel,

  1432. because you've died

  1433. with Christ,

  1434. because you've been

  1435. raised with Christ,

  1436. because you've been

  1437. given a new identity

  1438. in Christ,

  1439. because your record

  1440. of sin has been

  1441. nailed to the cross,

  1442. because of what

  1443. Jesus did for us,

  1444. therefore,

  1445. verse 16,

  1446. do not let anyone

  1447. judge you

  1448. with regard

  1449. to food and drink

  1450. on the matter

  1451. of a festival

  1452. or a new moon

  1453. or a Sabbath.

  1454. These things

  1455. are just a shadow

1456. of what is to come,

  1457. but the substance,

  1458. the reality,

  1459. is Christ.

  1460. So what's happening here

  1461. is some people

1462. are coming to the church

  1463. and they're saying,

  1464. oh, you're a Christian.

  1465. That's good.

  1466. Well, because you're a Christian,

  1467. that means that,

  1468. you know,

1469. you better not do this,

1470. you better eat this food,

  1471. not eat that food,

1472. you've got to drink this,

  1473. don't drink that.

  1474. You have to go

  1475. to that festival

  1476. and observe that Sabbath.

  1477. There are all these

  1478. religious rituals

  1479. that are now

1480. putting on top of them

  1481. to saying,

1482. if you really want God

  1483. to love you

  1484. and accept you,

  1485. you're going to have

1486. to do all these rituals

  1487. as well.

  1488. And Paul says,

  1489. you're in Christ.

  1490. Those things

  1491. are just a shadow.

  1492. The reality is Jesus.

1493. Fix your eyes on Jesus.

1494. Look again at verse 20.

  1495. It says,

  1496. why do you submit

  1497. to these regulations?

  1498. Do not handle,

  1499. do not taste,

  1500. do not touch.

  1501. These things

  1502. have a reputation

  1503. for promoting wisdom

  1504. or self-made religion.

  1505. These things

  1506. make you falsely humble,

1507. but they are of no value

  1508. in curbing self-indulgence.

1509. Isn't that what we said earlier?

  1510. You veer away

  1511. from the gospel,

1512. you can act like a Christian,

  1513. you can behave

  1514. like a Christian,

  1515. you can do

  1516. all the Christian things,

1517. but that has no power

  1518. to actually change

  1519. the inner motivations

  1520. of my heart.

  1521. It has no power

  1522. to change

  1523. what's really going

  1524. on in my heart.

1525. And so I can act

  1526. the talk,

  1527. I can put on

  1528. a good false image,

  1529. falsely humble,

  1530. that doesn't make me

  1531. more like Jesus.

  1532. Friends,

  1533. can I confess something?

  1534. Pastors

  1535. are the worst

  1536. at this.

  1537. Because we have

  1538. to pretend

  1539. like we've got it

  1540. all together,

  1541. right?

  1542. No one wants

  1543. to go to church

  1544. with a pastor

  1545. that looks like

1546. his life is falling apart.

  1547. And so as pastors,

  1548. we are the best

  1549. at acting it.

  1550. We are the best

  1551. at faking it

  1552. and looking like

  1553. our Christian life

  1554. is all in order.

  1555. Paul says,

  1556. if your Christian faith

1557. is I've got to do

  1558. the right thing

1559. and play the right part

1560. in order to be accepted

  1561. and loved,

  1562. your Christian faith

  1563. is a fake.

  1564. It has no power

  1565. to save you

1566. and it has no power

  1567. to change you.

  1568. And so what's

  1569. the implication?

  1570. Forsake

  1571. empty religious rituals.

  1572. Friends,

  1573. looking to your

  1574. spiritual sincerity,

  1575. your religious effort,

  1576. the relative infrequency

  1577. of sin

  1578. to assure you

  1579. of God's love

  1580. is powerless

  1581. and deceiving.

  1582. It cannot save you

1583. and it cannot change you.

  1584. Friends,

  1585. look to Jesus.

  1586. Look to Jesus.

  1587. Look to the one

1588. who died on the cross

  1589. for you.

  1590. Friends,

1591. if you've come to Christ

  1592. in faith and repentance,

1593. you are united in Him.

1594. Your life is in Him.

1595. His death is your death.

1596. His life is your life.

  1597. His obedience

  1598. is your obedience.

  1599. His acceptance

  1600. before the Father

  1601. is your acceptance

  1602. before the Father.

  1603. Look to Him.

  1604. Look to Jesus.

  1605. Friends,

  1606. this day,

  1607. this week,

  1608. look to Jesus.

  1609. Don't look to yourself.

  1610. Don't look to your

  1611. moral performance.

  1612. Look to Jesus.

  1613. Here's the second implication.

  1614. Forsake

  1615. licentious Christianity.

  1616. Forsake the lie

  1617. that says

  1618. because Jesus died

  1619. I can live however I want.

  1620. It doesn't matter.

  1621. In chapter 3,

  1622. Paul says this.

1623. He says the same thing

  1624. that he's just said

  1625. in chapter 2.

  1626. He says,

1627. your life is with Christ.

  1628. You're united with Christ.

  1629. You've died with Christ.

1630. You've been raised with Christ.

1631. Your identity is in Christ.

1632. Your hope is in Christ.

1633. Your meaning is in Christ.

1634. Your purpose is in Christ.

1635. Your future is in Christ.

  1636. And then he says,

  1637. verse 5,

  1638. therefore,

  1639. because of that,

  1640. put to death

  1641. what belongs

  1642. to your earthly nature.

  1643. Sexual immorality,

  1644. impurity,

  1645. lust.

  1646. Christ.

  1647. Remember,

1648. we looked at this verse

  1649. two years ago

  1650. and we said,

  1651. friends,

1652. John Owen said it like this,

  1653. be killing sin

1654. or sin be killing you.

  1655. Friends,

  1656. if we struggle

  1657. with sexual immorality,

  1658. put a shotgun

  1659. to your computer.

  1660. Take a hammer

  1661. and smash your iPhone.

  1662. Buy a dummy phone

  1663. that can't access

  1664. the internet.

  1665. Do whatever it takes.

  1666. Put to death

  1667. the sinful nature.

  1668. It's serious.

  1669. It really is.

  1670. What about hypocrisy?

1671. Peter put hypocrisy to death.

  1672. That's not how Christ

  1673. calls us to live.

  1674. He says,

  1675. evil desires,

  1676. selfish greed,

  1677. these are idolatry.

  1678. Put them away.

  1679. Anger and wrath,

  1680. malice,

  1681. that means unforgiveness

  1682. in our hearts.

  1683. Slander,

  1684. filthy language.

1685. Do not lie to one another.

  1686. Why?

1687. So that God will love us?

  1688. No, no, no.

1689. Because you have put off

  1690. your old self

  1691. with its practices.

  1692. You have been given

1693. a new self in Christ.

  1694. You are renewed

  1695. according to the image

  1696. of your creator.

  1697. Friends,

  1698. the gospel doesn't come

  1699. and tell us

1700. to pull up our socks

1701. in order to be loved

  1702. and accepted by God.

  1703. No, it says,

  1704. because we have come

  1705. to Jesus in faith

  1706. and repentance,

  1707. we are accepted.

  1708. We are loved.

  1709. We are given

  1710. a new identity,

  1711. a new life,

  1712. a new power,

  1713. a new purpose,

  1714. a new motivation.

  1715. And that leads

  1716. to a powerful change

  1717. in our lives.

  1718. Last thing,

1719. I want to say this.

  1720. in Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  1721. and 5,

  1722. the apostle Paul

  1723. wants the Christians

  1724. to live forgiving

  1725. and loving lives.

  1726. And so this is

  1727. what he says.

  1728. He says,

  1729. therefore be imitators

  1730. of God

  1731. as dearly loved children

  1732. and walk in love.

  1733. He says,

  1734. brothers and sisters,

  1735. walk in love.

1736. Now is that a good thing

  1737. to do?

  1738. Yeah, that's a good thing

  1739. we should do.

1740. Is that a gospel conduct?

  1741. Yeah, that's a good thing

  1742. to do.

  1743. But what's the motivation?

1744. Why should we be loving?

1745. Is it so that God

  1746. will love us?

1747. Is it so that we'll be

  1748. more acceptable

  1749. before God the Father?

1750. Is it so that Jesus

  1751. will be more favorable,

  1752. more blessed,

  1753. will be more blessed

  1754. in our life?

  1755. No, he says,

  1756. friends,

  1757. walk in love

1758. just as Christ loved us

1759. and gave himself for us.

  1760. Gave himself up

  1761. as a sacrificial offering

  1762. to God.

  1763. Friends,

  1764. because you've received

  1765. the immeasurable love

  1766. of Christ,

  1767. because your heart

  1768. has been melted

  1769. by God's love

  1770. for you in Christ,

  1771. because you're secure

  1772. in his love,

  1773. because you've been humbled

  1774. by his love,

  1775. therefore,

  1776. dear brothers and sisters,

  1777. walk in love.

  1778. Friends,

  1779. throughout the New Testament,

  1780. the paradigm of obedience

  1781. and holy living

  1782. is this,

  1783. because you're a new creation

  1784. in Christ,

  1785. because of the gospel,

  1786. therefore obey Jesus,

  1787. because you're in Christ,

  1788. therefore pursue holiness,

  1789. because your life

  1790. is in Christ,

  1791. forsake immorality,

  1792. because you're rich

  1793. in Christ,

  1794. therefore be generous

  1795. with your riches,

  1796. because you're secure

  1797. in Christ's love,

  1798. therefore give yourself

  1799. away in serving

  1800. and loving others.

  1801. Friends,

  1802. this stunning announcement,

  1803. though we were dead

  1804. in our sins,

  1805. cut off from God,

  1806. under God's wrath

  1807. and his judgment

  1808. and his fury,

  1809. Jesus died for us

  1810. on the cross

  1811. to take our sin,

  1812. to reconcile us

  1813. to the Father,

1814. to bring us home again.

1815. Jesus did what we could

  1816. not do for ourselves,

1817. so that we can be

  1818. united with him.

  1819. Friends,

1820. that is why we must,

  1821. we must,

  1822. we must,

  1823. as followers of Jesus,

  1824. get the gospel

  1825. deeper into us.

  1826. Friends,

  1827. that's why if you're not

1828. a follower of Jesus today,

1829. you must believe the gospel.

1830. You must become a Christian.

  1831. It's your only hope.

  1832. Friends,

  1833. that's why as a church,

  1834. we must be getting

  1835. the gospel deeper

  1836. inside of us.

  1837. Jesus,

  1838. our Christ,

  1839. our Lord

  1840. and our King.

  1841. Let's pray together.

  1842. Father,

  1843. O Lord Jesus,

  1844. God,

  1845. we need you.

  1846. God,

  1847. we so,

  1848. so need you.

  1849. Father,

1850. we need you more today

  1851. than we needed you

  1852. ever before.

  1853. We need you more

  1854. this week,

  1855. God,

  1856. than ever before.

  1857. God,

  1858. we need a work

  1859. of your Holy Spirit

1860. to be getting inside of us.

  1861. We need you,

  1862. God,

  1863. to open the eyes

  1864. of our hearts

  1865. to see our sin,

  1866. to see our brokenness,

  1867. but to see you,

  1868. Jesus,

  1869. and what you've done

  1870. for us.

  1871. God,

  1872. won't you give us

  1873. a fresh revelation

  1874. of the gospel.

  1875. God,

  1876. I pray for Watermark

  1877. like we've prayed

  1878. so many times.

  1879. God,

1880. may you get the gospel

  1881. deeper inside of us.

  1882. I pray,

  1883. Lord Jesus,

1884. that if there's one thing

  1885. that marks us

  1886. as a church,

1887. though we are very far

  1888. from being perfect,

  1889. God,

  1890. if there's one thing

  1891. that marks us,

  1892. may it be this,

  1893. that God,

  1894. we know

  1895. and trust in

  1896. and love deeply

  1897. and respond to

  1898. and walk in obedience

  1899. to you,

  1900. Christ,

  1901. our King

  1902. and our Lord.

  1903. God,

  1904. show us the gospel

  1905. once again.

1906. Show us how it relates

  1907. to our lives,

  1908. Lord.

  1909. Father,

  1910. where we have

  1911. put our hope

  1912. or our trust

  1913. in empty religion,

  1914. God,

  1915. forgive us.

1916. Where we've put our hope

  1917. or our trust

  1918. in ourselves,

  1919. God,

  1920. in our spiritual performance,

  1921. in our moral performance

  1922. or in some recent

  1923. spirituality,

  1924. Father,

  1925. forgive us

  1926. of the idolatry

  1927. of that.

  1928. Forgive us,

  1929. God,

  1930. of trusting ourselves.

  1931. Father,

  1932. where we've

  1933. taken your grace,

  1934. taken advantage

  1935. of your grace,

  1936. where we have not

  1937. realized that it's

  1938. your kindness

  1939. that leads us

  1940. to repentance,

  1941. God,

  1942. God.

  1943. Oh,

  1944. Father,

  1945. forgive us as well,

  1946. we pray.

  1947. God,

  1948. we pray,

  1949. come and change us.

  1950. We pray,

  1951. Jesus,

1952. that we really will be

  1953. salt and light

  1954. in the city.

1955. We pray that as followers

  1956. of Jesus,

  1957. we will stand out,

  1958. we will be different.

1959. We pray there will be

  1960. a different conduct,

  1961. a different ethic,

  1962. a different morality,

  1963. not because we're

  1964. trying to be good

  1965. Christians,

  1966. but because we're

  1967. overwhelmed by your

  1968. love that you have

  1969. for us.

  1970. We are secure

  1971. in your gospel.

  1972. We've been given

  1973. a new identity,

  1974. God.

  1975. Oh,

  1976. Christ,

  1977. I pray,

  1978. do that.

  1979. Father,

  1980. finally,

  1981. I want to pray

  1982. for those of us

  1983. that don't know you

  1984. this morning.

  1985. Maybe we've been

  1986. very religious,

  1987. we've tried to do

  1988. all the right things,

  1989. but we've never

  1990. been born again.

  1991. Oh,

  1992. God,

  1993. I pray this morning,

  1994. give us your

  1995. Holy Spirit,

  1996. give us faith

  1997. to trust you,

  1998. cause us to be

  1999. born again.

  2000. God,

  2001. I pray for my

  2002. brothers and sisters,

2003. I pray for those of us

2004. here that don't know you,

  2005. God.

  2006. Come and do what

  2007. only you can do,

  2008. Lord.
