  1. The scripture reading comes from Colossians chapter 3 verses 12 to 17.

    Colossians 3:12–17

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin or on the screen.

  3. Put on then as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,

  4. bearing with one another, and if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other,

  5. as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

  6. And above all this put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony,

  7. and let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.

  8. And be thankful, let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,

  9. singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

  10. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,

  11. giving thanks to God the Father through him.

  12. This is the word of God.

  13. Before I do that pastoral prayer and we kind of look at this passage,

  14. I just want to say a massive thank you to you as a congregation.

  15. Fiona and I and Etienne have just been so blessed by able to take some time away.

  16. As you can see, we've had a little bit of transition in our family.

  17. And during this time, we've been able to really spend a lot of time together as a family,

  18. and particularly even in the UK.

  19. Some of you know my dad had a stroke back in August,

  20. and we were able to really spend a lot of time with him.

  21. And just the physios who are looking after him just said,

  22. your timing of coming has just been absolutely miraculous,

  23. because it was the perfect time to come.

  24. And as I was looking at my dad, who basically,

  25. it was like having two kind of babies in the house.

  26. I don't know if you know about strokes, but my dad's been stripped of everything.

  27. He can almost, he's learning how to walk again.

  28. He's learning how to dress himself again.

  29. He's learning how to go to the toilet by himself.

  30. And yet in the midst of all of this,

  31. he said to me something just that really, really struck me.

  32. He said, you know, I've been stripped of everything.

  33. You know, when you're 76 years old, you've got a lot of life behind you.

  34. And to be kind of back like a baby, it's very humbling.

  35. But he said, I've been stripped of everything.

  36. But in this place, I realize

  37. that when you have nothing left,

  38. Jesus is all that you need.

  39. And as we kind of think about all that's going on at the moment,

  40. I want us to pray just in the light of that

  41. and to just ask God to come and be with us

  42. and to work in our city.

  43. So would you come and pray with me, the pastoral prayer?

  44. And don't just listen to me praying.

  45. Let's just pray this together and I'll lead you.

  46. So please bow your heads and let's pray.

  47. Father, we live in what seem to be very troubled times.

  48. A lot of fear.

  49. A lot of suspicion.

  50. A lot of division.

  51. A lot of criticism.

  52. And yet this is the world that you came in.

  53. Your son, Jesus Christ, came.

  54. And you said and you called a group of people,

  55. your disciples, a messy bunch of people.

  56. And you said, my peace I give to you.

  57. I don't give as the world gives.

  58. I give as I give.

  59. And Father, you gave Jesus to be our prince of peace.

  60. We pray, Lord, that you would draw near to us today

  61. as your people in all our anxieties,

  62. in all our uncertainties, in all our failures.

  63. Bring us your peace.

  64. Because if we have you,

  65. then we have everything that we need, Lord.

  66. Lord, you're our refuge in the storm.

  67. You're a firm foundation.

  68. You're an anchor that is never swayed.

  69. Forgive us, Father, where we have put our hopes

  70. on shifting sands.

  71. We have so much from you,

  72. and yet we feel that our life

  73. is more in the gifts you've given us

  74. than in you, ourself.

  75. We look to our stuff that we have,

  76. the plans that we have,

  77. the certainties that we have,

  78. that you tell us that our life is in you.

  79. Help us to believe that, Lord.

  80. Help us to go deeper in our hearts, Lord.

  81. Because you are rock solid.

  82. Teach us to trust you,

  83. the one who's the never failing rock of ages.

  84. Drive the gospel deeper into our hearts.

  85. So that even if everything is stripped away from us

  86. and our city and all these other things,

  87. if we have you, we have everything that we need.

  88. Lord, we just completely pray for Wuhan

  89. and for all those who are affected there by the virus.

  90. We pray for our brothers and sisters,

  91. particularly in that province.

  92. Lord, I pray that you would be their confidence

  93. at this time, that they would know

  94. that their lives are utterly in your hands

  95. and they are immortal until you decide

  96. it is their time to go.

  97. May they mirror your sacrificial love

  98. for the people there

  99. by not running away from people,

  100. but running towards them with your love.

  101. Protect them, we pray,

  102. and even in this terrible situation,

  103. would you use it for good?

  104. Would you draw people to yourself through this?

  105. We pray for the medical workers.

  106. We pray for the government officials.

  107. We pray that you protect them.

  108. You give them wisdom.

  109. You give them grace.

  110. You keep their hearts from fear.

  111. Just give them wisdom to know how to treat patients

  112. and how to deal with the situation wisely, Lord.

  113. And we pray, Lord, against fear

  114. just further dividing our society.

  115. Prince of peace, would you come?

  116. And Lord, we also want to pray,

  117. I want to pray for India too at this time, Lord.

  118. It just, there's a country with so much beauty

  119. but so much darkness, Lord.

  120. Just even this last week

  121. with the hostage taking of 20 children,

  122. the beating of a man's wife to death,

  123. the persecution of believers,

  124. the protests of a religious freedom,

  125. we just pray for our partners in the church in Delhi,

  126. for Akshay and Shruti there.

  127. We just pray, would you give their church

  128. boldness and confidence to witness to you

  129. in the midst of all of this situation.

  130. Use them to release many from darkness into your light.

  131. And Father, finally, we just want to pray

  132. also for the students here.

  133. Lord, even in the disruption of their classes

  134. and kids not being able to go to school,

  135. we pray in the midst of this turmoil

  136. that they would just have, again,

  137. this courage and this confidence

  138. that even when it feels like there's so little time

  139. and there's so much pressure on,

  140. that they can know that you've got this one.

  141. That their life, their grades,

  142. their future is utterly in your hands

  143. and they can trust you.

  144. Thank you that you are our Prince of Peace.

  145. You are our Rock of Ages.

  146. In Jesus' name.

  147. Amen.

  148. Great.

  149. So if you have your bulletin open,

  150. we're going to be looking through at this passage.

  151. And we're really following on from the series

  152. that we've started, the Watermark Essentials.

  153. And if you haven't been here, like me,

  154. you can listen back to some of the previous sermons.

  155. And we're going through the three core values

  156. that we have as a church,

  157. which are...

  158. Very good.

  159. Okay.

  160. A few of you.

  161. Okay.

  162. The rest of you can just look on the banner and cheat.

  163. But what, as Kevin said earlier,

  164. there is a virus which is infecting us.

  165. There's a virus which is destroying

  166. and devastating relationships, communities,

  167. individuals' lives throughout this city.

  168. And it's a virus which is more significant

  169. than the coronavirus.

  170. And that is sin.

  171. And as Kevin said earlier,

  172. sin is not just what the Bible says,

  173. sin is not just doing bad stuff.

  174. It's a heart that wants to go our own way,

  175. wants to rely on ourselves,

  176. wants to live life in our timing,

  177. in our way,

  178. in the way that we think things should happen

  179. and rejects the way God has designed us

  180. and called us into relationship with himself.

  181. And we've seen over the last few weeks

  182. that in the gospel message,

  183. the gospel message is not good advice

  184. to try and self-cure yourself

  185. because the disease is too deadly

  186. for your little bit of moral improvement

  187. to fix you.

  188. But the gospel is this good news

  189. that Jesus Christ,

  190. he lived the life that you and I couldn't live

  191. free from this virus.

  192. And he died the death that you and I should have died

  193. so that we could have this restored,

  194. healed relationship with him

  195. and with each other.

  196. And as we believe and trust

  197. in this gospel message in Christ,

  198. that gospel then is not just the entrance point

  199. into the community of faith,

  200. it's also the power to transform our lives.

  201. And that's what we've been looking at.

  202. And the power to make us more and more like Jesus.

  203. And so I want to show today,

  204. we've been looking at gospel,

  205. how that gospel message then flows into our life

  206. as a church in the community.

  207. So I'm going to look at three things, okay?

  208. It's a classic sermon with three points.

  209. So you're not going to be too confused.

  210. The first one,

  211. a chosen people formed by the gospel,

  212. a messy people,

  213. a sinful people changed by the gospel,

  214. and then a word-filled people speaking the gospel.

  215. Okay?

  216. So have your passage open

  217. and we're going to have a look through.

  218. So a chosen people.

  219. Just some background.

  220. The book of Colossians

  221. is written by Paul

  222. to a small house church

  223. in a place in Turkey,

  224. which some of us have been very close to,

  225. called Colossae.

  226. And this church is probably a mix

  227. of Jews and non-Jews, Gentiles,

  228. in the midst of the pagan Roman Empire.

  229. And Paul has spent three chapters,

  230. as Kevin said last week,

  231. telling the Colossians

  232. that Jesus is so much better

  233. than all the philosophies

  234. that are going around.

  235. These were philosophies

  236. which told you

  237. if you just rely on yourself,

  238. if you just get a bit of self-improvement,

  239. you can make your life

  240. a better you.

  241. And they had these things

  242. that if you're keeping the rules,

  243. then you're kind of in,

  244. in the in crowd.

  245. And if you're breaking the rules,

  246. then you're out.

  247. And the Jews had certain rules,

  248. like don't eat pork,

  249. circumcise,

  250. keep the Sabbath.

  251. And the non-Jews

  252. had certain rules,

  253. like eat pork,

  254. don't restrict my diet,

  255. like don't impose on my freedom,

  256. worship all these other gods,

  257. don't kind of restrict yourself

  258. down to one.

  259. The Jewish people

  260. had a license to performance

  261. of everything that they wanted

  262. to do through the rules.

  263. Some people wanted to do everything

  264. breaking the rules.

  265. And the clash of cultures and rules

  266. often resulted in division

  267. and separation.

  268. But Paul has been saying

  269. that now in the gospel,

  270. Jesus who's the supreme Lord

  271. of all creation,

  272. he's the ruler and sustainer

  273. of everything,

  274. through his death,

  275. he has brought together

  276. these people who are totally divided,

  277. and he's brought them together

  278. in one radically different community.

  279. Not based on a performance

  280. to a whole lot of rules,

  281. not based on a license to sin

  282. and do whatever you want,

  283. but based on the gospel,

  284. and this is what we call church.

  285. So,

  286. if I were to ask you,

  287. what is church?

  288. What would you normally say?

  289. Anyone?

  290. Sorry.

  291. You're whispering very loudly.

  292. Sorry?

  293. A community of believers?

  294. Where you get baptized?

  295. Yes.

  296. We have all kinds of definitions of church.

  297. Some of us think it's a building,

  298. some of us actually think

  299. it's a meeting place.

  300. Many of us will say,

  301. oh,

  302. it's a community of believers,

  303. but functionally,

  304. we treat it as something different.

  305. But,

  306. here's Paul's definition of church,

  307. or one of his.

  308. He says,

  309. verse 12,

  310. put on then,

  311. as God's chosen people,

  312. holy and beloved,

  313. or dearly loved.

  314. God's chosen people,

  315. holy and beloved.

  316. And what he's doing,

  317. he's taking a title from the Old Testament

  318. for Israel.

  319. People who were chosen out of many nations

  320. to know and be in this covenant relationship

  321. with the living God.

  322. They had to be given his word and his promises,

  323. and then to live,

  324. they were called to then live a distinctive lifestyle

  325. among the nations,

  326. so that other people would know that he truly is God.

  327. And what he does,

  328. what Paul does,

  329. is he takes this same title,

  330. and now he says to this little group of believers in Turkey,

  331. and he says,

  332. just as God chose Israel to be his special people,

  333. so God has chosen you.

  334. He's chosen you

  335. to be his people.

  336. You know,

  337. when I was growing up,

  338. and I'm sure you do this in Hong Kong as well,

  339. but we used to play football in the playground.

  340. And so whenever we'd start playing football,

  341. people would pick teams.

  342. And you know,

  343. there was always one kid who was left at the end

  344. who nobody wanted

  345. because he was useless at football.

  346. And everyone would be going,

  347. oh, you have him.

  348. You have him.

  349. No, no, I don't want him.

  350. You have him.

  351. And the thing is,

  352. what God comes along,

  353. and he says,

  354. you are like that kid.

  355. That kid is you and me.

  356. Because your performance

  357. really doesn't stand up to anything.

  358. But I'll have you.

  359. I'll have you for my team.

  360. Not based on anything that you have done.

  361. Not based on anything of how great you are,

  362. but based on something of how great I am.

  363. And how great my love is for you.

  364. You know,

  365. the Israelites,

  366. in the book of Deuteronomy,

  367. God says to them,

  368. I didn't choose you

  369. because you're more numerous,

  370. because you are amazing.

  371. I chose you because I loved you.

  372. I chose you because I loved you

  373. to show my power and my glory

  374. to people around.

  375. Which means this.

  376. Church is not my idea or your idea.

  377. It's God's idea.

  378. And church is not just a place you go to.

  379. It's an identity.

  380. It's a people you belong to.

  381. Jesus didn't save us

  382. to go to a meeting once a week.

  383. Did you know that?

  384. He saved us

  385. to be part of his people.

  386. random selfish individuals

  387. brought together

  388. to be his family for his glory.

  389. It's his choice.

  390. His initiative.

  391. And it's not just an identity

  392. initiated by God.

  393. He then says,

  394. your chosen people,

  395. holy.

  396. Do you know what holy means?

  397. Holy means set apart

  398. for God.

  399. Belonging to him.

  400. We're his.

  401. You know,

  402. in the Old Testament,

  403. there's Moses.

  404. When he sees this burning bush,

  405. he comes and approaches

  406. the burning bush.

  407. And God says to him,

  408. take off your sandals

  409. because you are standing

  410. on holy ground.

  411. Why is it holy?

  412. It's holy

  413. because God's presence is there.

  414. It's reserved for God.

  415. If you are a Christian,

  416. you and I are reserved for God.

  417. Did you know that?

  418. His church is reserved for God.

  419. That is an incredible privilege.

  420. You know,

  421. when I married my wife,

  422. I became set apart for her.

  423. I'm hers and she's mine.

  424. Now the thing is,

  425. that cannot just be an idea in my head.

  426. That shapes me.

  427. I can no longer do everything I could do

  428. when I was single.

  429. If I try,

  430. things won't go well.

  431. Because I've got a new identity.

  432. I'm not my own,

  433. Paul says.

  434. I was bought at a price.

  435. Which when we're talking about church,

  436. means this.

  437. If we're holy to God,

  438. it means this is God's church.

  439. It's not my church.

  440. It's not Kevin's church.

  441. It's not the elder's church.

  442. It's his church.

  443. Which means something

  444. even more uncomfortable.

  445. It means,

  446. if this is truly his church,

  447. then there should always be something in church

  448. which will make you uncomfortable.

  449. Do you know why?

  450. Because if everything's comfortable

  451. for a sinful person like me,

  452. I've probably made it into my church,

  453. not God's church.

  454. Right?

  455. Because I want it the way I want it,

  456. not the way God wants it.

  457. And so like,

  458. we come along on a Sunday morning

  459. and we go,

  460. I wonder if the sermon's gonna be good today.

  461. Or you're in your CG

  462. and you're like,

  463. I just don't click with my CG leader.

  464. I think I'd like to go and join another CG.

  465. Rather than going,

  466. God, this is about you.

  467. So how can I worship you

  468. and serve you

  469. and love the people around me?

  470. How can I love even these people

  471. I don't always get on with?

  472. Well,

  473. because we're holy people.

  474. We belong to him.

  475. We're his.

  476. We're chosen.

  477. And also,

  478. thirdly,

  479. he says here,

  480. we're beloved.

  481. We're dearly loved.

  482. Do you know Jesus loves this church?

  483. Oscar knows it.

  484. Just look around you, okay?

  485. Look around you

  486. at the motley crew

  487. that is around you right now

  488. and say to the person next to you,

  489. God says you are part of

  490. his chosen,

  491. holy,

  492. dearly loved people.

  493. And,

  494. God says you are part of

  495. your kingdom.

  496. He's chosen.

  497. He's chosen.

  498. He's chosen.

  499. He's chosen.

  500. He's chosen.

  501. He's chosen.

  502. He's chosen.

  503. He's chosen.

  504. He's chosen.

  505. He's chosen.

  506. Now,

  507. I know somebody,

  508. I know somebody

  509. who is considering

  510. donating their kidney

  511. for their brother

  512. to save his life

  513. because

  514. even though the operation

  515. is very dangerous

  516. and could have consequences

  517. for him,

  518. he loves his brother

  519. that much

  520. that he's willing to do it.

  521. Do you know,

  522. Jesus didn't just give a kidney

  523. for us,

  524. for his church.

  525. He gave his life for us.

  526. That's how much he loves

  527. and delights in the church.

  528. And he doesn't delight in it

  529. just worldwide,

  530. although that's true.

  531. He delights in a specific

  532. individual church.

  533. Regardless of your sin,

  534. regardless of your past,

  535. regardless of anything

  536. you have done before,

  537. his love is upon us

  538. if you are a believer in him.

  539. He died

  540. so that the person

  541. sitting next to you

  542. could be sitting next to you

  543. here right now

  544. because he wanted them

  545. in this church.

  546. Did you know that?

  547. You might not want them

  548. in this church.

  549. You might be wishing

  550. they were in another church,

  551. but Jesus wanted them here.

  552. And it's his church.

  553. It's not our church.

  554. And so the question is,

  555. if I love Jesus,

  556. I'm called to love

  557. those he loves.

  558. So do I love them?

  559. Do I see them as his family?

  560. How does the gospel

  561. help us to become better lovers

  562. of those God loves?

  563. Let's have a look at that.

  564. We said the gospel

  565. is what creates this community.

  566. We're chosen,

  567. we're holy,

  568. we're dearly loved.

  569. We're people from many,

  570. many different backgrounds.

  571. And second point,

  572. we're sinful people

  573. changed by the gospel.

  574. You know,

  575. Kevin said last week

  576. that it's easy

  577. for people to believe

  578. we become a Christian

  579. through just believing

  580. this gospel message

  581. and then we kind of move on

  582. to like a whole load

  583. of working hard

  584. spiritual practices,

  585. pray hard,

  586. do a lot of good

  587. moral behavior.

  588. And it's very easy

  589. in the same way

  590. to do that.

  591. When we join the church,

  592. we come to join the church

  593. through believing the gospel

  594. and then we think

  595. that actually we kind of

  596. carry on as church

  597. through being very moral

  598. and good

  599. and behaving well.

  600. That's why some non-believers

  601. have said to me,

  602. I don't want to come to church

  603. because I'm not good enough.

  604. You ever had people say that?

  605. Do you know,

  606. church should be the very place

  607. that messed up people

  608. feel most welcome.

  609. Right?

  610. Why?

  611. Well,

  612. let's have a look at this.

  613. Paul knows this.

  614. He says,

  615. verse 12,

  616. put on then

  617. as God's chosen,

  618. holy and beloved.

  619. Put on.

  620. You know,

  621. when you get up in the morning,

  622. you're going to look

  623. in your wardrobe

  624. and you decide

  625. what you're going to wear.

  626. Right?

  627. You have to put something on.

  628. What Paul is saying is,

  629. every morning,

  630. you have to decide

  631. what are you going to put on,

  632. what attitude

  633. you're going to dress yourself in.

  634. Am I going to dress myself

  635. in what Christ has done

  636. for my identity in the gospel

  637. or just in my own selfish ways?

  638. So he says,

  639. put on then,

  640. what does he say

  641. you've got to put on?

  642. Compassionate hearts,

  643. kindness,

  644. humility,

  645. meekness,

  646. patience,

  647. bearing with one another.

  648. And if one has a complaint

  649. against another,

  650. forgiving each other

  651. as the Lord has forgiven you,

  652. so also you must forgive.

  653. If you have a look

  654. at that list of qualities,

  655. how many of you would like

  656. to have those qualities

  657. in your relationships?

  658. Okay,

  659. good number.

  660. Well,

  661. just think about it.

  662. Why do you need

  663. to have compassionate hearts?

  664. Because people

  665. that you come into,

  666. even today,

  667. are more broken

  668. than you realize.

  669. Why do you need kindness?

  670. Because there's going to be

  671. a whole lot of times

  672. when you're tempted

  673. to be harsh and judgmental.

  674. Why do you need meekness?

  675. Because you're going

  676. to be tempted

  677. to try and push

  678. your own way forward

  679. all the time.

  680. Paul says,

  681. bear with one another

  682. in love.

  683. That means be in the long

  684. haul with people.

  685. Don't just tolerate them.

  686. Keep persevering

  687. in loving them.

  688. Don't back out.

  689. Now,

  690. why do you need

  691. to command someone

  692. to bear with people?

  693. Because sometimes

  694. people can be unbearable,

  695. right?

  696. Especially Christians.

  697. Right?

  698. You see,

  699. living out

  700. what God has called us to

  701. is hard work.

  702. It's messy

  703. because we're a bunch

  704. of sinners.

  705. And if you put

  706. one sinner

  707. and another sinner

  708. together

  709. in the same room,

  710. it's like putting

  711. stones together.

  712. And you rub them

  713. long enough,

  714. what do you get?

  715. Sparks or fireworks,

  716. right?

  717. Right?

  718. And in one sense,

  719. what Paul knows

  720. is the reality

  721. that actually,

  722. if you are in church

  723. long enough,

  724. there will be conflict.

  725. There will be times

  726. it rubs up against you.

  727. And if you never

  728. have conflict

  729. in your CGs,

  730. your community groups,

  731. then that's a clear

  732. sign to you

  733. that you're simply

  734. either not close enough

  735. to each other

  736. or not honest enough

  737. with each other.

  738. because at Watermark,

  739. we've really tried

  740. to build a stronger

  741. sense of community.

  742. And I don't know

  743. about you,

  744. but community is

  745. such a blessing

  746. to us.

  747. Like,

  748. while we've been away,

  749. just guys have been

  750. amazing.

  751. But there is a danger

  752. for us,

  753. and the danger is

  754. that we surround

  755. ourselves with people

  756. we like and people

  757. who are like us,

  758. and we call it

  759. Christian community.

  760. Church the way

  761. we want it.

  762. You know,

  763. you go to community

  764. lunch,

  765. and who do you

  766. sit with?

  767. You just sit with

  768. the people

  769. who are just like you.

  770. But you have to think

  771. what Paul is saying.

  772. Has that displayed

  773. the gospel

  774. where Jew

  775. and non-Jew,

  776. where rich and poor,

  777. where single and married

  778. are brought together

  779. in Jesus?

  780. I might want to put

  781. to you that maybe

  782. that isn't gospel

  783. created community.

  784. Sometimes we may be

  785. creating our own

  786. community,

  787. and just avoiding

  788. the rub,

  789. the awkwardness,

  790. the challenge

  791. of Christ-centered

  792. community.

  793. Because we're

  794. a bunch of sinners.

  795. But,

  796. God's chosen people,

  797. if I left you with that,

  798. that would just

  799. depress you.

  800. But God's chosen people

  801. are his means

  802. to take the gospel

  803. deeper into your heart.

  804. Tim Keller,

  805. and I know we've said

  806. this a number of times,

  807. so I think it's just

  808. helpful,

  809. summarizes the gospel

  810. as you're more sinful

  811. than you dare believe,

  812. and you're more loved

  813. than you dare hope.

  814. Right?

  815. The gospel tells us

  816. that we're sinners.

  817. You need a grace.

  818. But actually,

  819. I think in practice,

  820. most of us don't really

  821. think we're that sinful.

  822. Or,

  823. we actually don't

  824. really believe

  825. that other people

  826. in the church

  827. are that sinful

  828. until you experience it.

  829. until you experience

  830. something of the difference

  831. of them.

  832. And it brings out

  833. your own sin.

  834. And sometimes,

  835. it's not even their own sin,

  836. it's sometimes the fact

  837. that they're just

  838. different from you.

  839. But you see,

  840. your heart gets exposed.

  841. You know,

  842. I don't think

  843. I'm that judgmental.

  844. But I was once asked

  845. to usher

  846. at a wedding

  847. of some Nigerian

  848. Christian friends

  849. of a friend

  850. who had very little money.

  851. And so I agreed

  852. to help out.

  853. And so the wedding

  854. was 11,

  855. I arrived at 10,

  856. there was no one.

  857. 10.15,

  858. 10.30,

  859. 10.45,

  860. 10.50,

  861. no one turned up.

  862. About 10.50,

  863. the groom arrived.

  864. And then,

  865. there was kind of

  866. this slow trickle

  867. of people

  868. suddenly started arriving.

  869. About 11.15,

  870. things started kicking off

  871. a little bit.

  872. So I decided to go down

  873. five minutes down the road

  874. to the reception venue

  875. just to see

  876. what was going on.

  877. I walked into the hall.

  878. There was nothing.

  879. There were tables

  880. just kind of

  881. up at the side

  882. and there was no one.

  883. And I thought,

  884. man,

  885. the reception's starting

  886. in like an hour.

  887. And so I just started

  888. taking down the tables,

  889. putting up the tables

  890. and started putting them out.

  891. And then at about 12 o'clock,

  892. some ladies came in.

  893. And they came in with food

  894. and they came in

  895. with some tablecloths.

  896. And I thought,

  897. great,

  898. now they're going to

  899. kind of come and help.

  900. So they put everything

  901. down on the table

  902. and then they started

  903. doing their hair

  904. for the next half an hour.

  905. And so I'm taking everything.

  906. There's 150 people at this.

  907. I'm taking all the cutlery around.

  908. I'm putting it all up

  909. on there.

  910. And people are going,

  911. okay,

  912. they're coming in like

  913. five minutes.

  914. And I'm rushing to and from.

  915. And I ask one of them,

  916. hey,

  917. could you help me?

  918. And she kind of

  919. takes down one plate,

  920. puts one plate down

  921. and carries on doing her hair.

  922. And while I'm doing this,

  923. I get to the end of it

  924. and finally I just put down

  925. the last kind of set,

  926. the last table

  927. and then the bride and groom

  928. and the other people

  929. walked in.

  930. And here I am like

  931. collapsed on the floor

  932. and everyone else is happy.

  933. But I was furious.

  934. Someone said to me,

  935. oh,

  936. thank you very much

  937. for helping.

  938. And I'm like,

  939. that's not what I need.

  940. And you see,

  941. in my heart,

  942. I was judging

  943. and I'm just being honest,

  944. I was judging

  945. every Nigerian at that point.

  946. But let me tell you,

  947. in what seemed to me

  948. as a British guy,

  949. disorganization

  950. and just cultural difference,

  951. for me was actually

  952. a gospel moment

  953. because it started exposing

  954. something in my own heart.

  955. Because when people

  956. don't perform

  957. up to the expectations

  958. you have,

  959. maybe they're good,

  960. maybe they're bad expectations,

  961. when someone even

  962. sins against you,

  963. and it wasn't really

  964. sin against me,

  965. even then,

  966. doesn't their sin

  967. or their difference

  968. start provoking your own?

  969. And you slide off

  970. what Kevin called

  971. that gospel horse

  972. that he talked about

  973. last week,

  974. where you slide

  975. either into performance

  976. or into license.

  977. When you go into performance,

  978. you just start judging people

  979. and condemning them

  980. for their behavior,

  981. don't you?

  982. Telling everyone else

  983. about them.

  984. or then we slide

  985. the other way,

  986. justifying the reason

  987. why I'm angry

  988. because it's righteous anger.

  989. Don't we?

  990. And when we're doing that,

  991. what happens

  992. in that moment,

  993. I'm pressing

  994. what I call

  995. a gospel delete button.

  996. Because at that moment,

  997. if I allow

  998. those things

  999. to carry on

  1000. in my heart,

  1001. what happens

  1002. is my spiritual veins

  1003. begin to harden.

  1004. My love for Jesus

  1005. gets infected

  1006. by that sin virus.

  1007. And what happens

  1008. is it begins

  1009. to destroy

  1010. not only my joy

  1011. in Christ,

  1012. but it also destroys

  1013. the community around.

  1014. And Paul here

  1015. says,

  1016. if any of you

  1017. has a complaint,

  1018. what do you do?

  1019. Forgive one another.

  1020. And he knows

  1021. this is really hard.

  1022. So what he says,

  1023. he says it again.

  1024. As the Lord

  1025. has forgiven you,

  1026. so you also

  1027. must forgive.

  1028. Because when we get

  1029. offended,

  1030. when anger happens,

  1031. when complaining

  1032. arises in my heart

  1033. and I allow it

  1034. to fester,

  1035. do you know

  1036. that reveals to me

  1037. that I've lost

  1038. sight of the gospel?

  1039. people.

  1040. But Paul says,

  1041. forgive as the Lord

  1042. has forgiven you.

  1043. How did the Lord

  1044. forgive me?

1045. When I was at my best

1046. or when I was at my worst?

  1047. Right?

1048. And if we don't get this,

1049. have a look at this

  1050. whole list.

  1051. Compassion,

  1052. kindness,

  1053. humility,

  1054. meekness,

  1055. patience,

  1056. bearing with one

  1057. another,

  1058. forgiveness.

  1059. Do you know

  1060. that every single

  1061. one of those

  1062. are the characteristics

1063. of how God in Christ

  1064. has treated us?

  1065. I mean,

  1066. let me just take

  1067. like one verse

  1068. which shows you this.

  1069. Romans 2 verse 4.

    Romans 2:4

  1070. Do you presume,

  1071. this is Paul talking,

  1072. on the riches

  1073. of God's kindness

  1074. and forbearance

  1075. and patience,

  1076. not knowing

  1077. that God's kindness

1078. is meant to lead you

  1079. to repentance?

  1080. I wonder,

  1081. do you know

  1082. the kindness

  1083. of God towards you?

  1084. Do you know

  1085. the patience

  1086. of God towards you?

  1087. Before he chose you,

  1088. he knew how impatient

  1089. you could be.

  1090. He knew how unkind

  1091. you could be.

  1092. He knew

  1093. that you can be

  1094. unbearable at times.

  1095. And if you're married

1096. and you don't believe me,

  1097. just ask your spouse.

  1098. What?

  1099. God,

  1100. God,

  1101. in his great mercy,

  1102. because he's rich

  1103. in love

  1104. and compassion,

  1105. he still died

  1106. to bring people

  1107. like you and me,

  1108. he still chose you

  1109. and me

1110. to be part of his family.

  1111. So when we're impatient,

  1112. when we're unkind,

  1113. when we won't forgive,

  1114. it's a sign

  1115. that we've lost sight

  1116. of the immense

  1117. nature of his kindness

  1118. and patience

  1119. and forgiveness

  1120. towards us.

1121. Let me just make that

  1122. personal.

  1123. Some of you here

  1124. have had issues

1125. with people in the church,

  1126. maybe even your family,

  1127. maybe your spouses.

  1128. Some of you

  1129. have had needs

  1130. which you felt

  1131. were unmet.

  1132. Some of you

  1133. have felt

  1134. that people just

  1135. were judgmental

  1136. or too harsh

1137. or they didn't care enough.

  1138. There were things

  1139. which was left said

  1140. or that you wish

  1141. had been said,

  1142. things that were unsaid

  1143. that you wish

  1144. hadn't been said.

  1145. And what God

1146. wants to bring to you

  1147. is first of all,

  1148. he wants to bring

  1149. the gospel

  1150. of his kindness

  1151. to you.

1152. He wants to tell you

  1153. first of all

  1154. that his arms

  1155. are open wide

  1156. for you.

  1157. And in these moments

  1158. what he's trying

  1159. to do

  1160. is he wants you

  1161. to run to him,

  1162. to be honest

  1163. with him,

  1164. to allow him

  1165. to come

  1166. and expose

  1167. your heart

  1168. and as you preach

  1169. the promises

  1170. of God

  1171. that you are

  1172. chosen by him,

  1173. dearly loved

  1174. by him,

  1175. he begins

  1176. to expose you

  1177. so that you

  1178. begin to see

  1179. that as you dwell

  1180. on his glory

  1181. of his forgiveness

  1182. and grace,

  1183. it begins to melt

  1184. your heart.

  1185. Because it's only

  1186. as I see

  1187. that I'm more sinful

  1188. than I dare believe

1189. and yet I'm more loved

  1190. than I could ever

  1191. possibly imagine

  1192. that I can begin

  1193. to extend that

  1194. to other people

  1195. who I think

  1196. are far more sinful

  1197. than I dare believe

  1198. but are also

  1199. far more loved

  1200. than I could ever

  1201. possibly imagine.

1202. And as we do that

  1203. it teaches us

  1204. not to wash

  1205. our hands

  1206. of people

  1207. but to show

  1208. grace,

  1209. kindness,

  1210. compassion,

  1211. persistent grace

  1212. to people.

  1213. You know,

  1214. there's never been

  1215. a person

  1216. who when there's

  1217. been a conflict

  1218. or an issue

  1219. who has run away

  1220. from that

  1221. or withdrawn

  1222. from that

  1223. and withdrawn

  1224. from community

  1225. who has ever

  1226. fallen more in love

  1227. with Jesus

  1228. because of that

  1229. decision.

  1230. And there has

  1231. never been a person

  1232. who experiences

  1233. the pain of community

  1234. and yet runs

  1235. to Jesus

  1236. in the midst

  1237. of it

  1238. in desperation

  1239. seeking him

  1240. who through

  1241. that experience

  1242. as they've

  1243. allowed the gospel

  1244. to deepen their heart

  1245. go in their hearts

  1246. and lead them

1247. to seek to love others

  1248. who has not gone

  1249. deeper in the gospel

  1250. and has not seen

  1251. the love of Jesus

  1252. more beautiful

  1253. than they realized

  1254. it was before.

  1255. Because you know

1256. if you have a conflict

  1257. with someone

1258. and you work through it

  1259. what happens

  1260. to that relationship?

  1261. Doesn't it go deeper?

  1262. Doesn't it go deeper?

  1263. And so

  1264. this is what God

1265. wants to do with us

  1266. in community.

  1267. He wants to both

  1268. take his love

  1269. deeper into us

  1270. through each other

  1271. through our messiness

  1272. to show you

  1273. his grace

  1274. in multi-color

  1275. and then to share

  1276. that with each other.

  1277. But how does that

  1278. not lead us

  1279. to what we called

  1280. license to sin

  1281. before?

  1282. Like

  1283. you know

  1284. someone comes to you

  1285. and says

  1286. hey I didn't tell you

  1287. I wasn't turning up

  1288. to help with kids

  1289. ministry today

  1290. because I thought

  1291. you could learn

  1292. patience.

  1293. Don't go there

  1294. okay?

  1295. That's not the gospel.

1296. But we come to the

  1297. how do we stop

  1298. just sliding into

  1299. well you just

  1300. got to forgive people

  1301. and let them

  1302. let them off

  1303. everything.

  1304. How do we stop

  1305. that becoming

  1306. licensed to sin?

  1307. The third thing

  1308. the final thing

  1309. we're not just

  1310. a chosen

  1311. holy

  1312. dearly loved

  1313. people

  1314. we're not just

  1315. a sinful people

  1316. that God wants

  1317. to change

  1318. through even

  1319. the rub of each

  1320. other

  1321. we're also people

  1322. who speak the gospel

  1323. to each other.

  1324. Let me ask you

  1325. what's the difference

  1326. between doing

  1327. Airbnb

  1328. and dwelling

  1329. in a place?

  1330. You can answer.

  1331. Sorry.

  1332. Yeah one's permanent

  1333. the other one's temporary.

  1334. Airbnb you're there

1335. for one, two, three days

  1336. maybe a week

1337. but you dwell in the place

  1338. you unpack your bags

  1339. you settle in

1340. you're just camped out there.

  1341. It's home.

  1342. Here's what Paul says

  1343. in verse 16.

1344. Let the word of Christ

  1345. Airbnb in you.

  1346. Doesn't say that.

1347. Let the word of Christ

  1348. dwell in you

  1349. richly.

  1350. What is he saying?

  1351. He's saying

  1352. this church

  1353. Airbnb

  1354. is like

  1355. okay

  1356. God's word Sunday

  1357. and then maybe

  1358. I'll do midweek

  1359. once

  1360. you know

  1361. once or twice.

  1362. No he's saying

  1363. no no no

  1364. it's got to dwell

  1365. so that your community

  1366. is so camped out

  1367. in God's words

  1368. that it's filling

  1369. your WhatsApp

  1370. that it's filling

  1371. your prayers

  1372. that it's filling

  1373. your community life

  1374. together.

  1375. It cannot be

  1376. Sunday

  1377. Airbnb only.

  1378. How does it dwell

  1379. with us?

  1380. He says

  1381. through teaching

  1382. admonishing

  1383. and singing.

  1384. That's why we sing

  1385. together

  1386. so that Christ

1387. may dwell in our hearts.

  1388. Who does he say

  1389. the word of Christ

  1390. should dwell in?

  1391. you.

  1392. You there

  1393. is plural.

  1394. So he's not

  1395. talking

  1396. to the pastor

  1397. of Colossian

  1398. Watermark Church.

  1399. Who is he talking

  1400. saying it's the

  1401. responsibility

  1402. of mine

  1403. to help

  1404. the gospel

  1405. be taught

  1406. and admonished?

  1407. Whose responsibility

  1408. is that?

  1409. After me say

  1410. mine.

  1411. Mine.

  1412. whose responsibility

  1413. is it?

  1414. Okay.

  1415. Good.

  1416. It's my

  1417. responsibility.

  1418. Why is it

  1419. all of our

  1420. responsibilities?

  1421. Because I have

  1422. a gospel delete

  1423. button

  1424. and so do you.

  1425. Every day

  1426. it resets

  1427. again and again.

  1428. Sin is

  1429. this virus

  1430. is deceitful

  1431. because

  1432. every single

  1433. day I am

  1434. tempted to forget

  1435. the mercies

  1436. the patience

  1437. the kindness

  1438. of God

  1439. to me.

  1440. You've got

  1441. work deadlines

  1442. and a boss

  1443. who is breathing

  1444. fire and you're

  1445. tempted to fear

  1446. and believe that

  1447. your boss

  1448. determines your

  1449. life.

  1450. You look over

  1451. your peers

  1452. how their kids

  1453. are doing

  1454. and you're

  1455. tempted to feel

  1456. like oh

  1457. I'm behind

  1458. my kids

  1459. are behind

  1460. I've got to

  1461. prove myself

  1462. we've got to

  1463. somehow do

  1464. something to

  1465. catch up.

  1466. It doesn't

  1467. matter how long

  1468. you've been a

  1469. Christian

  1470. today

  1471. tomorrow

  1472. and every

  1473. day this week

  1474. there's going

  1475. to be moments

  1476. which are going

  1477. to come

  1478. and the gospel

  1479. in those moments

  1480. flies out of the

  1481. window and fear

  1482. flies in

  1483. unforgiveness

  1484. flies in

  1485. anger flies in

  1486. insecurity

  1487. flies in

  1488. unforgiveness

  1489. flies in

  1490. and the heart

  1491. can begin to

  1492. harden

  1493. and you know

  1494. what I lose

  1495. joy

  1496. I lose

  1497. peace

  1498. I lose

  1499. confidence

  1500. in Christ

  1501. and what

  1502. do I need

  1503. I need a

  1504. group of

  1505. people

  1506. a chosen

  1507. holy

  1508. dearly loved

  1509. group of

  1510. people

  1511. who are going

  1512. to come to

  1513. me and

  1514. remind me

  1515. of the

  1516. incredible

  1517. kindness

  1518. and grace

  1519. and patience

  1520. of God

  1521. himself

  1522. who come

  1523. to me and

  1524. bring the

  1525. gospel to

  1526. bear saying

  1527. Chris don't

  1528. fear

  1529. doesn't matter

  1530. what people

  1531. say about

  1532. you

  1533. your identity

  1534. is secure

  1535. you're chosen

  1536. you're holy

  1537. you're dearly

  1538. loved

  1539. so don't

  1540. let Satan

  1541. walk all

  1542. over you

  1543. this week

  1544. rise up

  1545. overcome

  1546. in him

  1547. because in

  1548. Christ you

  1549. are more

  1550. than a

  1551. conqueror

  1552. because he

  1553. has done

  1554. everything

  1555. for you

  1556. don't we

  1557. need that

  1558. so let me

  1559. ask you

  1560. who are you

  1561. doing that

  1562. with

  1563. who are you

  1564. encouraging

  1565. in the

  1566. gospel

  1567. daily

  1568. things I'm

  1569. just really

  1570. encouraging our

  1571. community

  1572. I just see

  1573. that happening

  1574. in just so

  1575. many different

  1576. ways and I

  1577. want to

  1578. encourage us

  1579. as a church

  1580. just to keep

  1581. going with

  1582. that

  1583. do you

  1584. know

  1585. who you

  1586. are called

  1587. to gospel

  1588. to bring the

  1589. gospel to

  1590. bear

  1591. are you doing

  1592. it

  1593. because our

  1594. brothers and

  1595. sisters we

  1596. need it

  1597. it's the only

  1598. way this

  1599. community can

  1600. flourish

  1601. but let me

  1602. finish with

  1603. there's one of

  1604. those things

  1605. that it says

  1606. the word of

  1607. Christ dwells in

  1608. us which is

  1609. maybe a little

  1610. more challenging

  1611. Paul says

  1612. admonish one

  1613. another

  1614. do you know

  1615. what to

  1616. admonish means

  1617. it means to

  1618. correct

  1619. to bring

  1620. someone back

  1621. to the right

  1622. path

  1623. you know

  1624. some people

  1625. think Christians

  1626. should be

  1627. nice to each

  1628. other

  1629. we think

  1630. that niceness

  1631. is like a

  1632. like a

  1633. Christian

  1634. virtue

  1635. I'm British

  1636. the British

  1637. invented

  1638. niceness

  1639. that's why we

  1640. say sorry

  1641. all the time

  1642. only Canadians

  1643. say sorry

  1644. more

  1645. and yet

  1646. niceness

  1647. is not

  1648. a fruit of

  1649. the spirit

  1650. love

  1651. joy

  1652. peace

  1653. patience

  1654. niceness

  1655. it's not

  1656. there

  1657. because

  1658. sometimes

  1659. niceness

  1660. can actually

  1661. mask our

  1662. lack of

  1663. love for

  1664. our

  1665. brothers

  1666. and sisters

  1667. and I'm

  1668. guilty of

  1669. this as

  1670. anyone

  1671. you know

  1672. Fiona and

  1673. I we try

  1674. and involve

  1675. other people

  1676. in our

  1677. lives

  1678. and

  1679. and one

  1680. of the

  1681. things that

  1682. has happened

  1683. in the

  1684. past is

  1685. people are

  1686. involved in

  1687. their lives

  1688. they see

  1689. Fiona and

  1690. myself

  1691. fighting

  1692. and I'm

  1693. generally

  1694. trying to

  1695. hide it

  1696. away

  1697. Fiona's

  1698. like out

  1699. and proud

  1700. like

  1701. no we're

  1702. we're gonna

  1703. do it

  1704. if we're gonna

  1705. do it

  1706. do it

  1707. in front

  1708. of

  1709. everyone

  1710. which is

  1711. good

  1712. I mean

  1713. because

  1714. I remember

  1715. one partway

  1716. through one

  1717. fight

  1718. and you know

  1719. I'd gone

  1720. off and

  1721. you know

  1722. we separated

  1723. and

  1724. and one of

  1725. the people

  1726. who was

  1727. who was

  1728. with us

  1729. came up

  1730. to me

  1731. and said

  1732. hey Chris

  1733. you know

  1734. I've just

  1735. noticed

  1736. that

  1737. sometimes

  1738. you struggle

  1739. with really

  1740. listening and

  1741. trying to

  1742. understand

  1743. Fiona's

  1744. perspective

  1745. I think

  1746. you should

  1747. actually

  1748. stop

  1749. thinking

  1750. about

  1751. yourself

  1752. and start

  1753. trying to

  1754. think about

  1755. your wife

  1756. here

  1757. obviously

  1758. my response

  1759. was filled

  1760. with kind

  1761. of thank

  1762. you

  1763. every

  1764. defensive

  1765. bone in

  1766. my body

  1767. was kind

  1768. of raised

  1769. but you

  1770. know

  1771. that person

  1772. loved me

  1773. because

  1774. that person

  1775. loved me

  1776. enough

  1777. to not

  1778. let the

  1779. sin virus

  1780. harden my

  1781. heart

  1782. and break

  1783. into my

  1784. relationship

  1785. with my

  1786. wife

  1787. and as I

  1788. went away

  1789. and thought

  1790. about it

  1791. I realized

  1792. she had

  1793. loved me

  1794. more than

  1795. all the

  1796. people who

  1797. stayed silent

  1798. about my

  1799. sin

  1800. and that

  1801. caused me

  1802. to turn

  1803. back to

  1804. Jesus

  1805. and say

  1806. God

  1807. forgive me

  1808. and as

  1809. I saw

  1810. that I'm

  1811. more sinful

  1812. than I

  1813. realized

  1814. I also

  1815. realized

  1816. but God

  1817. still loves

  1818. me

  1819. he still

  1820. accepts

  1821. me

  1822. and as I

  1823. could go

  1824. and apologize

  1825. to my

  1826. wife

  1827. do you see

  1828. the gospel

  1829. had begun

  1830. to go

  1831. work deeper

  1832. in my

  1833. heart

  1834. and actually

  1835. work deeper

  1836. into our

  1837. relationship

  1838. you see

  1839. you see

  1840. that's it

  1841. he agrees

  1842. you see

  1843. this is

  1844. what it is

  1845. to be

  1846. church

  1847. some of

  1848. us here

  1849. we need

  1850. to repent

  1851. of our

  1852. niceness

  1853. we need

  1854. to repent

  1855. that we've

  1856. not allowed

  1857. the gospel

  1858. to give

  1859. us courage

  1860. in a

  1861. loving

  1862. relationship

  1863. and I'm

  1864. not talking

  1865. about being

  1866. harsh

  1867. I'm talking

  1868. about being

  1869. kind

  1870. but we

  1871. need to

  1872. have people

  1873. that love

  1874. us enough

  1875. to bear

  1876. with us

  1877. and forgive

  1878. us

  1879. to keep

  1880. sharing

  1881. the gospel

  1882. with us

  1883. to admonish

  1884. one another

  1885. without it

  1886. being harsh

  1887. without it

  1888. being judgmental

  1889. and this

  1890. is the

  1891. community

  1892. that Jesus

  1893. died for

  1894. that is

  1895. more precious

  1896. than a

  1897. thousand

  1898. of the

  1899. greatest

  1900. sermons

  1901. you could

  1902. ever listen

  1903. to

  1904. this is

  1905. the church

  1906. Jesus

  1907. died for

  1908. a sinful

  1909. messy

  1910. bunch

  1911. of people

  1912. but who

  1913. through

  1914. his power

  1915. and his

  1916. power

  1917. alone

  1918. can begin

  1919. to change

  1920. and we

  1921. are instruments

  1922. in each

  1923. other's lives

  1924. to enable

  1925. that to

  1926. happen

  1927. and Jesus

  1928. gets the

  1929. glory

  1930. because nobody's

  1931. going to look

  1932. at us

  1933. and say

  1934. wow

  1935. you're

  1936. amazing

  1937. but they'll

  1938. look at him

  1939. and say

  1940. Jesus

  1941. it says

  1942. here

  1943. whatever you

  1944. do

  1945. in word

  1946. or do

  1947. everything

  1948. in the name

  1949. of the

  1950. Lord

  1951. Jesus

  1952. giving

  1953. thanks

  1954. to God

  1955. the

  1956. father

  1957. through

  1958. him

  1959. that's

  1960. what

  1961. church

  1962. is about

  1963. the glory

  1964. of God

  1965. through a

  1966. broken

  1967. messy

  1968. people

  1969. like us

  1970. let's

  1971. just pray

  1972. actually on

  1973. the screen

  1974. there's a few

  1975. questions

  1976. here

  1977. and I want

  1978. you to

  1979. think about

  1980. these questions

  1981. in the light

  1982. of the grace

  1983. of God

  1984. I want you

  1985. to take

  1986. just a minute

  1987. to allow

  1988. God just

  1989. to speak

  1990. to your

  1991. heart

  1992. do you

  1993. see

  1994. the immensity

  1995. of what

  1996. Christ has

  1997. done to

  1998. bring you

  1999. into his

  2000. people

  2001. and do you

  2002. see how he

  2003. wants to

  2004. use you

  2005. and he

  2006. wants to

  2007. work

  2008. in his

  2009. people

  2010. and I

  2011. want to

  2012. give you

  2013. just a

  2014. minute

  2015. to just

  2016. do business

  2017. with God

  2018. right now

  2019. some of you

  2020. have

  2021. unforgiveness

  2022. in your

  2023. hearts

  2024. God wants

  2025. you to run

  2026. to him

  2027. today

  2028. not to

  2029. let that

  2030. go

  2031. another

  2032. day

  2033. where you

  2034. just

  2035. kind of

  2036. put that

  2037. off

  2038. and brush

  2039. it under

  2040. the carpet

  2041. some of

  2042. you have

  2043. got hurts

  2044. some of

  2045. you realize

  2046. you'd be

  2047. more wrapped

  2048. up in

  2049. yourself

  2050. than really

  2051. thinking about

  2052. anybody else

  2053. some of

  2054. you just

  2055. feel

  2056. there have

  2057. been things

  2058. in church

  2059. which have

  2060. hurt you

  2061. and just

  2062. wonder whether

  2063. God really

  2064. loves you

  2065. through

  2066. because you've

  2067. seen his

  2068. people hurt

  2069. you but

  2070. actually God

  2071. wants to

  2072. bring healing

  2073. to you

  2074. today

  2075. spend time

  2076. with him

  2077. right now

  2078. to

  2079. you

  2080. Amen.

2081. Father, I just want to thank you.

2082. That you would actually choose to choose us.

2083. Thank you for your love.

2084. Because without it, Lord, we would just be lost in.

2085. And bitterness and harshness and judgmentalism.

2086. A whole load of things which just tear people apart.

2087. But because of what you have done.

2088. Because of your great love for us.

2089. We are not consumed, but you bring us the power to change.

2090. The power to live life.

  2091. With a new perspective.

2092. I pray, Father, for those of us who actually struggle with what it really means to be this people.

2093. We struggle with the people in our community groups.

2094. We struggle with things not being the way we want them to be.

2095. I pray, come and minister.

2096. And show, Lord, that you are everything that we need.

2097. I pray for those of us, Lord, who are sometimes cowardly.

2098. When we see things in other people's lives, we either respond with harshness or respond with silence.

2099. But I pray, teach us to know how to love with such great compassion.

2100. That we have such great boldness.

2101. Because we have such a great savior.

2102. That our identity is not at stake.

2103. When we come and share just how to point each other back to you.

2104. Make us a people who are willing to be courageous with the gospel.

  2105. Give us your power.

2106. Work in this church, Father, that your name might be glorified.

2107. Thank you for your goodness.

  2108. In Jesus' name.

  2109. Amen.
