  1. Now, can you turn with me in your Bibles back to the book of Colossians, Paul's letter to the Colossians,

  2. and we're going to read his prayer, verse 9 to verse 14, as we think together about living to please the Lord.

  3. So Colossians chapter 1 and at verse 9.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  4. For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you.

  5. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,

  6. so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way,

  7. bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,

  8. being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might,

  9. so that you may have great endurance and patience,

  10. and giving joyful thanks to the Father,

  11. who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.

  12. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness

  13. and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,

  14. in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

  15. So if you have your Bible, keep it open there as we continue to think through Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  16. Let me begin with an observation,

  17. and it's this,

  18. how we think about Jesus shapes how we live for Jesus.

  19. I want to begin with a letter I read this week,

  20. written by a chap at the age of 66,

  21. and he wrote this,

  22. as he spoke about the work of God in his life.

  23. Did he not redeem and deliver me from being a slave in Africa?

  24. Take me up from the dunghill of sin and misery?

  25. Put me among the princes, even his own children?

  26. Tame the fierce tiger in my heart,

  27. and give me a name, a place, and service in his house.

  28. The author of that letter,

  29. the author of many hundreds of wonderful gospel-rich letters,

  30. was John Newton,

  31. the author of the famous hymn Amazing Grace,

  32. which we'll sing at the end.

  33. John Newton, the former slave owner,

  34. who actually himself became a slave in Africa

  35. before being converted,

  36. becoming a pastor,

  37. working to end slavery in the UK.

  38. And what I find so lovely about this letter,

  39. written by him in those days,

  40. the late 1700s,

  41. fairly elderly man,

  42. he still had that sense of joy in knowing Jesus.

  43. That song of amazing grace

  44. was one that he still sung in his heart.

  45. He was somebody who was joyfully serving Jesus decades later.

  46. It's always a wonderful thing to see.

  47. We know in our own church

  48. the wonderful privilege of seeing

  49. older, mature Christians

  50. who have walked with Jesus for many years

  51. and continue to do so joyfully.

  52. In many ways, I think he matches,

  53. John Newton matches,

  54. the sentiments of Paul, the apostle.

  55. Paul, who would talk about himself

  56. as the chief of sinners,

  57. described himself as a blasphemer

  58. and a persecutor and a violent man.

  59. And yet God showed him grace and mercy

  60. so that he would say,

  61. for me to live is Christ

  62. and to die is gain.

  63. How we think about Jesus

  64. shapes how we live for Jesus.

  65. And that takes us to Paul's prayer here.

  66. Because what we'll see

  67. is that Paul is praying

  68. that the believers here

  69. would know God's will

  70. so that they would do God's will.

  71. And God's will is here expressed

  72. as walking worthy of Jesus

  73. and living to please Jesus

  74. and to do that because of God's saving grace.

  75. So let's see this together.

  76. Let's think, first of all,

  77. about living to please Jesus.

  78. Verses 9 to 12,

  79. we focus on Paul's prayer.

  80. But before we do that,

  81. almost as a by-the-by,

  82. let's just think for a minute

  83. about training in language.

  84. So think about parents

  85. perhaps training their children

  86. in a language

  87. or you're perhaps trying to encourage someone

  88. to learn another language.

  89. How does that process happen?

  90. Well, there is a listening in

  91. and there's attempts at repeating,

  92. copying words and phrases

  93. and then adapting them

  94. for their own use.

  95. And I think that process

  96. of language learning

  97. is helpful whenever we come

  98. to the prayers

  99. that we find in the Bible

  100. because I guess as Christians,

  101. if we're Christians,

  102. many of us will have found ourselves

  103. thinking, asking, saying,

  104. I wish I had a better prayer life.

  105. I wish I had a way

  106. to pray for myself

  107. and for others

  108. and the church.

  109. I don't feel particularly good

  110. at prayer.

  111. I'm sure we can probably

  112. all resonate with that

  113. at some point in our lives.

  114. Jesus' disciples, of course,

  115. turned to Jesus

  116. recognizing his unique relationship

  117. with the Father

  118. and they said,

  119. Lord, teach us to pray.

  120. And perhaps it's always been the case

  121. that in the church

  122. there's that desire

  123. to want to grow in prayer

  124. and for centuries

  125. what the church has done

  126. is we have learned

  127. from the language of prayer

  128. that we find in the Bible.

  129. That's why Jesus gave

  130. the Lord's Prayer.

  131. Christians down

  132. through the centuries

  133. have used the Psalms

  134. to form their own

  135. prayer language.

  136. And then we have

  137. the models of prayer

  138. that we find in the Bible.

  139. For example,

  140. Paul's one here.

  141. So even as we're thinking

  142. about what he prays,

  143. perhaps we can also be conscious

  144. of here is a way

  145. that I can learn

  146. to develop

  147. in my own prayers.

  148. One of the things

  149. that we recognize,

  150. verse 9,

  151. if you look at the way

  152. Paul begins there,

  153. he says,

  154. For this reason,

  155. since the day we heard about you,

  156. we have not stopped

  157. praying for you.

  158. And again,

  159. it's significant.

  160. Paul is praying

  161. for a church

  162. that he's never met.

  163. He knows Epaphras,

  164. but he doesn't know the church.

  165. And so here's a connection

  166. for us.

  167. You know,

  168. we have the privilege,

  169. I'm saying this to someone

  170. this week,

  171. and in Beclu,

  172. we have the privilege

  173. of welcoming

  174. for different times

  175. people involved

  176. in ministry and mission

  177. all over the world.

  178. And we may not know

  179. their congregations

  180. or their ministries,

  181. but we know the leaders

  182. so we can pray

  183. for those that they serve.

  184. So this can help us

  185. as we think about mission

  186. and connecting it

  187. to our prayer.

  188. But we also see

  189. that he says,

  190. We have not stopped

  191. praying for you.

  192. There's a consistency.

  193. These things

  194. that are important

  195. to Paul

  196. are things

  197. that he's going

  198. to commit

  199. to praying

  200. for regularly.

  201. Here are some principles

  202. that he wants

  203. to see established

  204. in God's people,

  205. so he's going

  206. to bring them

  207. to God regularly.

  208. So even there,

  209. before we even get

  210. to what Paul's praying

  211. for,

  212. there are lessons

  213. for us

  214. in how we ourselves

  215. pray for others.

  216. And again,

  217. just before we get

  218. into how Paul prays,

  219. let's just frame this

  220. in the context

  221. of another form

  222. of training.

  223. So we train people

  224. in language,

  225. but we were those

  226. who were trained

  227. in politeness,

  228. and as parents,

  229. again,

  230. we train our children

  231. towards politeness,

  232. don't we?

  233. From a very early age,

  234. we want our children

  235. to appreciate

  236. if someone does

  237. something for you,

  238. if somebody gives

  239. something,

  240. the polite response

  241. is to say,

  242. thank you.

  243. Now,

  244. apply that to

  245. what we have here,

  246. and we can say

  247. that when we understand

  248. that God has given

  249. his one and only

  250. son for us

  251. to qualify us

  252. for an eternal

  253. inheritance,

  254. when he has rescued

  255. and redeemed us

  256. at the cost

  257. of his son Jesus,

  258. then our lives

  259. as the people of God

  260. ought to become

  261. one big thank you.

  262. Worship as thankfulness,

  263. obedience as thankfulness.

  264. Now,

  265. having said all that,

  266. let's look at

  267. what Paul prays,

  268. and let's think about

  269. what it looks like

  270. when Paul says

  271. to aim to walk

  272. worthy of Jesus

  273. as Lord

  274. because of

  275. what he's done

  276. for us

  277. in the gospel.

  278. So,

  279. what does Paul pray?

  280. Verse 9,

  281. we find his request.

  282. The second sentence there,

  283. or the beginning

  284. of sentence 2,

  285. we continually

  286. ask God

  287. to fill you

  288. with the knowledge

  289. of his will

  290. through all the wisdom

  291. and understanding

  292. that the Spirit gives.

  293. What's he praying?

  294. He's praying for believers

  295. to know

  296. God's will,

  297. to have that wisdom

  298. that comes from

  299. God,

  300. the Holy Spirit,

  301. so that they might,

  302. as it were,

  303. think God's thoughts

  304. after him.

  305. Now,

  306. it may be the case

  307. when we hear

  308. that phrase,

  309. you know,

  310. God's will,

  311. what's God's will

  312. for my life,

  313. we might think

  314. of something

  315. that's very personal,

  316. we might think

  317. of choices

  318. that we have to make,

  319. it might be about

  320. our future,

  321. career,

  322. relationship,

  323. that can be

  324. where our mind goes,

  325. but the emphasis

  326. typically in

  327. God's word

  328. is that we would

  329. know God's word,

  330. that's God's will,

  331. that we would know

  332. him in his word,

  333. and that we would

  334. have the wisdom

  335. to apply God's word

  336. to our lives,

  337. that the Holy Spirit

  338. would help us to know

  339. how to live wisely,

  340. applying God's word

  341. in everyday life.

  342. Three things we can say

  343. about the Spirit,

  344. the Spirit inspired

  345. the writing of God's word,

  346. and that same Spirit

  347. then in the life

  348. of a believer

  349. illuminates God's word,

  350. lights it up for us,

  351. so we can see it come alive,

  352. and we can understand

  353. how it applies to us,

  354. and the Spirit also

  355. instructs us

  356. in wisdom

  357. so that we can

  358. in very practical ways

  359. show love

  360. and obedience

  361. to God

  362. in our day-to-day life.

  363. So that's what Paul

  364. is praying for.

  365. We need to ask the question,

  366. why does he pray that?

  367. Why does that matter?

  368. Well, look with me

  369. at verse 10.

  370. He explains it.

  371. We've not stopped

  372. praying for you

  373. so that

  374. you may live a life

  375. worthy of the Lord

  376. and please him

  377. in every way.

  378. To know God's will

  379. so that believers

  380. in the Lord Jesus

  381. would then do

  382. God's will.

  383. Specifically,

  384. that we would walk

  385. worthy of the Lord Jesus.

  386. That we would live

  387. to please him

  388. always.

  389. praise.

  390. Perhaps we can think

  391. of it this way.

  392. Think about

  393. the setting

  394. of a family.

  395. Christians are called

  396. into the family

  397. of God.

  398. God is our Father,

  399. Jesus,

  400. our Savior,

  401. our elder brother.

  402. Paul is praying

  403. that we wouldn't,

  404. as Christians,

  405. drag the name of Jesus

  406. through the mud,

  407. but positively

  408. we would bring glory

  409. to him.

  410. That we wouldn't bring

  411. shame on our God

  412. and Father,

  413. but rather we would

  414. honor him

  415. in our everyday lives.

  416. Paul prays for Christians

  417. to know and do

  418. what pleases Jesus

  419. in every way,

  420. in all of life.

  421. So,

  422. not just the religious part,

  423. how do I live for Jesus

  424. on Sunday?

  425. Disconnect that

  426. from Monday to Friday.

  427. Not just how do I

  428. please Jesus

  429. when it's convenient

  430. and comfortable.

  431. How do I please Jesus

  432. in every way,

  433. in every setting?

  434. It made me think

  435. of that famous phrase

  436. from the Dutch

  437. theologian Kuiper.

  438. I don't think that's

  439. how you say it,

  440. but anyway,

  441. that's how I'm going

  442. for it.

  443. He said,

  444. there is no square inch

  445. over all of creation

  446. in which Jesus

  447. does not say,

  448. mine.

  449. The lordship of Jesus

  450. is absolute.

  451. And if that's the case,

  452. then we can say,

  453. and Paul,

  454. in effect,

  455. is saying to us,

  456. remember

  457. that there is no square inch

  458. of our lives

  459. over which Jesus

  460. does not say,

  461. mine.

  462. And so wisdom

  463. looks like,

  464. how do I live

  465. to please Jesus

  466. in this particular situation,

  467. in this relationship?

  468. Paul's prayer,

  469. in a sense,

  470. is that as Christians

  471. and as a church,

  472. there would be

  473. this guiding principle.

  474. What would please Jesus?

  475. Perhaps we remember

  476. those wristbands.

  477. What would Jesus do?

  478. What would please Jesus

  479. as guiding principle?

  480. What does walking

  481. worthy of Jesus

  482. look like here,

  483. in my workplace,

  484. in my family situation,

  485. as I face this experience?

  486. So, we pray,

  487. and we ask the Spirit

  488. to lead us,

  489. in a sense,

  490. to ask that question

  491. in the first place,

  492. because if we're honest,

  493. there are times

  494. when living to please Jesus

  495. falls down

  496. our priority list.

  497. So, we ask for the Spirit

  498. to remind us,

  499. that's our calling,

  500. and then we ask

  501. for the Spirit

  502. to help us

  503. to have the wisdom

  504. to answer the question well,

  505. so that we might

  506. represent Jesus

  507. well in the world.

  508. And to think about

  509. what that looks like,

  510. Paul draws attention

  511. to four particular

  512. aspects.

  513. So, continuing in verse 10,

  514. we see four elements

  515. mentioned

  516. about what it looks like

  517. to live worthy of a Lord

  518. and please Him

  519. in every way.

  520. The first of those,

  521. in verse 10,

  522. is bearing fruit

  523. in every good work.

  524. That if we are wanting

  525. to live to please Jesus,

  526. we will want to do good

  527. to bless others.

  528. Really, to follow

  529. the pattern of Jesus.

  530. Perhaps it's helpful

  531. here to think about

  532. the image that Jesus

  533. uses in John 15,

  534. I am the vine

  535. and you are

  536. the branches

  537. that we will bear fruit

  538. when we are abiding

  539. in Christ

  540. by the Spirit.

  541. That's a prayer point

  542. for this church

  543. in Colossae.

  544. That's a prayer point

  545. for our church also.

  546. That we as Christians,

  547. we as a church,

  548. may bear the fruit

  549. of good work.

  550. So that's one way

  551. that we can live

  552. to please Jesus.

  553. Then he goes on

  554. to say,

  555. at the end of verse 10,

  556. to pray that they would be

  557. growing

  558. in the knowledge

  559. of God.

  560. Growing

  561. in knowledge.

  562. It's a reminder

  563. that our Christian faith

  564. is not about

  565. a static relationship.

  566. I came to faith

  567. at this point

  568. and I know God

  569. to this extent

  570. and that's me done.

  571. Rather,

  572. because God is infinite

  573. and eternal,

  574. there's always more

  575. to know

  576. and he invites us

  577. to know more

  578. and to delight

  579. in that knowledge

  580. and to grow

  581. in that knowledge

  582. of him.

  583. Not for knowledge's sake,

  584. that we'd know him better

  585. so we'd know

  586. how to please him.

  587. When we think about,

  588. I guess,

  589. any friendship

  590. or a family relationship

  591. where we know someone

  592. or we're getting

  593. to know somebody well,

  594. we will find ourselves

  595. instinctively

  596. studying.

  597. Studying to know

  598. what pleases

  599. the other person.

  600. Likes, dislikes,

  601. what pleases

  602. another person,

  603. what makes them

  604. happy.

  605. We grow

  606. in the knowledge

  607. of God

  608. and his word

  609. so that we might

  610. know how to live

  611. to please him.

  612. So there's another

  613. prayer point

  614. that Paul has

  615. that we can

  616. wisely introduce

  617. to our own prayers

  618. that our church

  619. might grow

  620. to know

  621. and love

  622. God

  623. more.

  624. The third

  625. way

  626. in which

  627. as Christians

  628. we can live

  629. to please Jesus

  630. we find

  631. in verse 11.

  632. Being strengthened

  633. with all power

  634. according to his

  635. glorious might

  636. so that you may

  637. have great endurance

  638. and patience.

  639. Living with

  640. endurance

  641. and patience.

  642. Faith

  643. to stand

  644. in the face

  645. of opposition

  646. or persecution.

  647. A faith

  648. that continues

  649. to hope

  650. in Jesus

  651. through the trials

  652. that come

  653. into our lives.

  654. A faith

  655. that clings

  656. to our solid

  657. future hope

  658. when we suffer.

  659. faith

  660. that trusts

  661. our good shepherd

  662. to care for us

  663. to provide for us

  664. to walk

  665. with us.

  666. And so Paul

  667. prays

  668. that the church

  669. would be

  670. strengthened

  671. with God's

  672. power and grace

  673. so that they

  674. might continue

  675. to run the race

  676. with patience

  677. recognizing that

  678. faith is a marathon

  679. and not a sprint.

  680. That

  681. as

  682. they

  683. begun

  684. the race

  685. of faith

  686. that they

  687. would finish

  688. it

  689. with the

  690. help

  691. that God

  692. provides.

  693. And again

  694. what a wonderful

  695. prayer

  696. for ourselves

  697. to pray

  698. for one another

  699. in our church

  700. that we would

  701. stand firm

  702. in faith

  703. that we'd be

  704. strengthened

  705. by the grace

  706. of God

  707. to endure

  708. to hold on

  709. and not to fold.

  710. The fourth way

  711. that Paul

  712. gives

  713. or Paul

  714. prays for

  715. as he seeks

  716. for God's

  717. people to live

  718. worthy of

  719. Jesus.

  720. Verse 12

  721. giving joyful

  722. thanks

  723. to the

  724. Father.

  725. A heart

  726. that's full

  727. of love

  728. and gratitude

  729. and thankfulness

  730. worship

  731. and deep

  732. joy

  733. rooted

  734. in their

  735. relationship

  736. with

  737. God.

  738. A life

  739. lived out

  740. of God's

  741. love

  742. for them

  743. in and

  744. through

  745. the Lord

  746. Jesus

  747. leading to

  748. thankfulness

  749. and joy.

  750. Should be a

  751. mark of

  752. God's people.

  753. Should be a

  754. mark of

  755. a church

  756. that we

  757. have a joy

  758. that runs

  759. deeper than

  760. happiness

  761. rooted in

  762. circumstance.

  763. A joy

  764. because we

  765. know that we

  766. know our

  767. God and

  768. he knows

  769. us

  770. and that

  771. our future

  772. is secure

  773. and that we

  774. have the love

  775. of God

  776. and we have

  777. peace with

  778. God.

  779. And so

  780. again we

  781. can pray

  782. for our

  783. church to

  784. be a

  785. place of

  786. gospel driven

  787. joy and

  788. thankfulness.

  789. Living to

  790. please

  791. Jesus

  792. is something

  793. that clearly

  794. mattered to

  795. Paul and it

  796. matters to

  797. God and so

  798. he prays.

  799. And now let's

  800. notice how he

  801. frames it.

  802. he asks that

  803. they would

  804. live to

  805. please

  806. Jesus

  807. in light

  808. of the

  809. gospel.

  810. That's where

  811. he shifts in

  812. verses 12

  813. to 14.

  814. Why would

  815. we live to

  816. please Jesus

  817. in every way?

  818. Why make

  819. the effort?

  820. Why commit

  821. for the long

  822. haul?

  823. Why have

  824. loyalty and

  825. love to

  826. Jesus?

  827. Paul says

  828. because of

  829. the gospel.

  830. Because of

  831. what God

  832. has done

  833. for us

  834. in Jesus.

  835. Because

  836. specifically

  837. here

  838. verse 12

  839. God has

  840. qualified us

  841. to share

  842. in his

  843. eternal

  844. inheritance

  845. through Jesus.

  846. Verse 13

  847. because he

  848. has rescued

  849. us from

  850. the dominion

  851. of darkness.

  852. And verse

  853. 14 because

  854. in Jesus

  855. we have

  856. redemption.

  857. So let's

  858. think about

  859. these.

  860. Recognizing

  861. that they

  862. transform

  863. life in

  864. the present

  865. and life

  866. in the

  867. future.

  868. Verse 12

  869. the Father

  870. through Jesus

  871. has qualified

  872. us.

  873. He has

  874. qualified you

  875. to share

  876. in the

  877. inheritance

  878. of his

  879. holy people

  880. in the

  881. kingdom

  882. of light.

  883. Qualified

  884. for that

  885. inheritance

  886. as part

  887. of God's

  888. family,

  889. his holy

  890. people.

  891. There is a

  892. treasure

  893. stored up

  894. for us

  895. in heaven

  896. who ultimately

  897. is Jesus

  898. himself.

  899. that

  900. inheritance

  901. of living

  902. in the

  903. kingdom

  904. of light

  905. looking

  906. forward

  907. to that

  908. future

  909. kingdom,

  910. God's

  911. kingdom,

  912. life with

  913. him and

  914. with his

  915. son Jesus

  916. forever.

  917. That's

  918. our

  919. inheritance.

  920. And he's

  921. going to make

  922. clear that that

  923. comes to us

  924. because of what

  925. God has done

  926. for us in

  927. Jesus in

  928. rescuing us.

  929. But he

  930. reminds the

  931. church that

  932. the gospel

  933. speaks good

  934. news and

  935. says to us

  936. in the

  937. Lord Jesus

  938. Christ we

  939. are

  940. children of

  941. God.

  942. There is a

  943. treasure in

  944. heaven stored

  945. up for us

  946. and the

  947. basis for

  948. that

  949. inheritance

  950. claim has

  951. nothing to do

  952. with us and

  953. everything to

  954. do with

  955. Jesus and

  956. his saving

  957. work that

  958. we have

  959. applied to

  960. us by

  961. faith.

  962. It's a

  963. remarkable

  964. truth when

  965. we stop

  966. and think

  967. about it.

  968. We think

  969. about our

  970. God who

  971. is our

  972. God.

  973. God is

  974. holy.

  975. God is

  976. sinless.

  977. He is

  978. perfect.

  979. He cannot

  980. bear sin.

  981. We think

  982. about our

  983. own lives

  984. and we

  985. know that

  986. we are

  987. sinful by

  988. nature.

  989. We are

  990. disqualified

  991. by nature.

  992. We have

  993. no claim

  994. to this

  995. eternal

  996. inheritance.

  997. So how

  998. does it

  999. come to

  1000. us?

  1001. And that's

  1002. where he

  1003. goes next.

  1004. He reminds

  1005. us that

  1006. God has

  1007. rescued us.

  1008. Verse

  1009. 13.

  1010. He has

  1011. rescued us

  1012. from the

  1013. dominion of

  1014. darkness

  1015. and brought

  1016. us into

  1017. the kingdom

  1018. of the

  1019. Son he

  1020. loves.

  1021. Rescued

  1022. from dominion,

  1023. rescued from

  1024. being in

  1025. the grip of

  1026. a hostile

  1027. power,

  1028. brought into

  1029. the kingdom

  1030. of light,

  1031. the kingdom

  1032. of the

  1033. Son he

  1034. loves.

  1035. There's

  1036. been a

  1037. transfer of

  1038. kingdoms that

  1039. takes place

  1040. in the

  1041. gospel.

  1042. perhaps we

  1043. might think

  1044. of a

  1045. prisoner of

  1046. war camp,

  1047. a soldier

  1048. who becomes

  1049. a prisoner

  1050. or a slave

  1051. in another

  1052. country with

  1053. no way of

  1054. escape,

  1055. locked in

  1056. darkness

  1057. until the

  1058. forces of

  1059. liberation

  1060. come.

  1061. The Bible

  1062. would say

  1063. that by

  1064. nature we

  1065. are prisoners

  1066. of war.

  1067. We live

  1068. in the

  1069. kingdom of

  1070. darkness,

  1071. ruled by

  1072. the devil,

  1073. slaves to

  1074. sin.

  1075. Not just

  1076. the things

  1077. we do,

  1078. but our

  1079. sin nature.

  1080. Because of

  1081. that, by

  1082. nature we

  1083. are enemies

  1084. of God,

  1085. we are

  1086. opposed to

  1087. God and

  1088. his rule

  1089. and his

  1090. word,

  1091. and because

  1092. of that we

  1093. find ourselves

  1094. under the

  1095. just judgment

  1096. of God

  1097. and heading

  1098. for death

  1099. and eternal

  1100. separation

  1101. from God.

  1102. The dominion

  1103. of darkness

  1104. is real

  1105. and it's

  1106. serious.

  1107. But then we

  1108. have the good

  1109. news of

  1110. God's

  1111. action.

  1112. What has

  1113. God done?

  1114. Verse 13,

  1115. he's rescued

  1116. us through

  1117. his son

  1118. Jesus.

  1119. We've been

  1120. delivered by

  1121. faith out

  1122. of the

  1123. prison camp

  1124. into a

  1125. kingdom of

  1126. perfect

  1127. freedom.

  1128. God's

  1129. kingdom of

  1130. light and

  1131. love.

  1132. How does

  1133. this rescue

  1134. happen?

  1135. Verse 14

  1136. tells us.

  1137. In whom,

  1138. in the

  1139. son,

  1140. we have

  1141. redemption,

  1142. the

  1143. forgiveness

  1144. of sins.

  1145. The Bible

  1146. speaks a

  1147. fair bit

  1148. about

  1149. redemption

  1150. and we

  1151. still speak

  1152. about it

  1153. today.

  1154. The price

  1155. paid to

  1156. buy

  1157. something

  1158. back,

  1159. the price

  1160. paid to

  1161. buy

  1162. someone

  1163. back,

  1164. thinking

  1165. about the

  1166. Old

  1167. Testament.

  1168. A person

  1169. could find

  1170. themselves

  1171. falling into

  1172. hard times

  1173. when he

  1174. had to

  1175. sell

  1176. their

  1177. land,

  1178. but they

  1179. or someone

  1180. else could

  1181. save up

  1182. money and

  1183. pay the

  1184. redemption

  1185. price to

  1186. buy the

  1187. land back.

  1188. Or they

  1189. might find

  1190. themselves

  1191. falling into

  1192. debt so

  1193. great that

  1194. they had to

  1195. sell themselves

  1196. into slavery

  1197. to work for

  1198. another person.

  1199. Well,

  1200. again,

  1201. they could,

  1202. or a

  1203. family member

  1204. could pay a

  1205. redemption

  1206. price to

  1207. be set

  1208. free.

  1209. And what

  1210. Paul does

  1211. is he takes

  1212. this idea

  1213. of redemption

  1214. and he makes

  1215. clear that the

  1216. debt we owe

  1217. is the debt

  1218. of our

  1219. sin.

  1220. Jesus said

  1221. the great

  1222. commandment

  1223. is love

  1224. the Lord

  1225. your God

  1226. with all

  1227. your heart

  1228. and with

  1229. all your

  1230. soul and

  1231. all your

  1232. mind and

  1233. all your

  1234. strength.

  1235. And our

  1236. failure to

  1237. do that

  1238. is that

  1239. debt

  1240. that we

  1241. pile up.

  1242. Jesus said

  1243. the second

  1244. great

  1245. commandment

  1246. is to

  1247. love our

  1248. neighbor as

  1249. ourselves.

  1250. With the

  1251. same amount

  1252. of energy

  1253. and effort

  1254. that we

  1255. apply to

  1256. caring for

  1257. ourselves,

  1258. we are to

  1259. care for

  1260. our neighbor.

  1261. And our

  1262. failure to

  1263. do that,

  1264. again,

  1265. is building

  1266. up a

  1267. debt of

  1268. sin.

  1269. And that's

  1270. a debt

  1271. that we

  1272. could never

  1273. repay

  1274. ourselves.

  1275. The

  1276. gospel says

  1277. there is a

  1278. redemption price

  1279. that has

  1280. been paid,

  1281. and it's

  1282. been paid

  1283. in and

  1284. through the

  1285. blood of

  1286. Jesus on

  1287. the cross.

  1288. In chapter

  1289. 2 of

  1290. Colossians,

  1291. Paul takes

  1292. us there in

  1293. picture language.

  1294. If you look

  1295. with me,

  1296. chapter 2,

  1297. halfway through

  1298. verse 13,

  1299. we find

  1300. there,

  1301. God made

  1302. you alive

  1303. with Christ.

  1304. He forgave

  1305. us all

  1306. our sins,

  1307. having

  1308. canceled the

  1309. charge of

  1310. our legal

  1311. indebtedness.

  1312. So there's

  1313. the gospel,

  1314. forgiveness,

  1315. and a debt

  1316. canceled,

  1317. that debt

  1318. which stood

  1319. against us

  1320. and condemned

  1321. us.

  1322. So there's

  1323. that honesty.

  1324. Because of

  1325. our sin,

  1326. we stand

  1327. justly

  1328. condemned

  1329. because of

  1330. that debt.

  1331. But what

  1332. has God

  1333. done?

  1334. He has

  1335. taken it

  1336. away,

  1337. nailing it

  1338. to the

  1339. cross.

  1340. And having

  1341. disarmed

  1342. the powers

  1343. and authorities,

  1344. he made

  1345. a public

  1346. spectacle of

  1347. them,

  1348. triumphing

  1349. over them

  1350. by the

  1351. cross.

  1352. Sometimes

  1353. when in

  1354. the Roman

  1355. Empire,

  1356. when they

  1357. were executing

  1358. a prisoner

  1359. on the

  1360. cross,

  1361. they would

  1362. nail above

  1363. that person's

  1364. head the

  1365. charges.

  1366. This is the

  1367. reason why

  1368. this person

  1369. is being

  1370. condemned

  1371. to death.

  1372. A warning,

  1373. don't find

  1374. yourself doing

  1375. likewise.

  1376. Well,

  1377. what does

  1378. Paul do?

  1379. To help

  1380. us understand

  1381. the gospel,

  1382. he says,

  1383. at the

  1384. cross,

  1385. that record

  1386. of debt

  1387. that should

  1388. be over

  1389. our heads

  1390. is pinned

  1391. over the

  1392. head of

  1393. Jesus,

  1394. the sinless

  1395. one,

  1396. the perfect

  1397. one.

  1398. He takes

  1399. that record

  1400. of debt.

  1401. He dies

  1402. in our

  1403. place for

  1404. our sins

  1405. so that

  1406. God can

  1407. justly write

  1408. paid in

  1409. fool

  1410. when our

  1411. faith

  1412. is in

  1413. Jesus.

  1414. The

  1415. just

  1416. anger

  1417. of God

  1418. falls

  1419. on

  1420. Jesus

  1421. and not

  1422. on

  1423. those

  1424. who

  1425. trust

  1426. in

  1427. him.

  1428. With

  1429. the

  1430. result

  1431. of the

  1432. power

  1433. of sin

  1434. is broken,

  1435. the power

  1436. of darkness

  1437. is broken,

  1438. we're made

  1439. alive with

  1440. Christ,

  1441. we enjoy

  1442. victory

  1443. with

  1444. him.

  1445. And what

  1446. Paul says

  1447. in this

  1448. prayer is

  1449. that in

  1450. light of

  1451. how wonderful

  1452. the gospel

  1453. is,

  1454. in light of

  1455. that transformation

  1456. that God

  1457. in Jesus

  1458. has worked

  1459. for us,

  1460. we should

  1461. live to

  1462. please

  1463. Jesus.

  1464. We should

  1465. live to

  1466. walk worthy

  1467. of him

  1468. in light

  1469. of the

  1470. gospel.

  1471. Just as

  1472. we close

  1473. some

  1474. random

  1475. visitor

  1476. stats,

  1477. and a

  1478. question,

  1479. what is

  1480. it that

  1481. makes

  1482. 35,000

  1483. people a

  1484. year

  1485. climb

  1486. Mount

  1487. Everest?

  1488. What is

  1489. it that

  1490. draws

  1491. 650,000

  1492. people a

  1493. year to

  1494. visit the

  1495. Isle of

  1496. Sky?

  1497. What is

  1498. it that

  1499. draws

  1500. 30 million

  1501. people to

  1502. stand at

  1503. the edge

  1504. of

  1505. Niagara

  1506. Falls?

  1507. doesn't

  1508. it speak

  1509. to the

  1510. fact that

  1511. as people

  1512. we are

  1513. looking for

  1514. a sense

  1515. of awe

  1516. and wonder,

  1517. something

  1518. bigger than

  1519. ourselves,

  1520. that we are

  1521. drawn to it,

  1522. we long

  1523. for that

  1524. sense of

  1525. awe and

  1526. wonder,

  1527. and when

  1528. we find

  1529. it,

  1530. you might

  1531. do yourself

  1532. at the

  1533. top of a

  1534. mountain

  1535. range,

  1536. you might

  1537. imagine

  1538. yourself

  1539. in a

  1540. really

  1541. dark

  1542. night

  1543. looking up

  1544. at the

  1545. stars,

  1546. what does

  1547. it do

  1548. for us?

  1549. Doesn't

  1550. it fix

  1551. our

  1552. perspective

  1553. so often?

  1554. Doesn't

  1555. it helpfully

  1556. cut us

  1557. down to

  1558. size and

  1559. help us

  1560. to remember

  1561. our God

  1562. who is

  1563. infinitely

  1564. bigger?

  1565. Paul in

  1566. his prayer

  1567. speaks to

  1568. our hearts

  1569. and our

  1570. minds.

  1571. He says

  1572. to us,

  1573. remember the

  1574. gospel is

  1575. powerful,

  1576. the gospel

  1577. is beautiful,

  1578. as we

  1579. long for

  1580. awe and

  1581. wonder,

  1582. we're

  1583. invited to

  1584. find it

  1585. in the

  1586. gospel.

  1587. And as

  1588. we reflect

  1589. on that,

  1590. that it

  1591. sorts our

  1592. perspective,

  1593. as we

  1594. understand that

  1595. God in

  1596. Christ has

  1597. done everything

  1598. for us,

  1599. then that

  1600. should motivate

  1601. us to

  1602. live for

  1603. him.

  1604. Because how

  1605. we think

  1606. about Jesus

  1607. shapes how

  1608. we live

  1609. for Jesus.

  1610. So let's

  1611. pray for

  1612. ourselves,

  1613. for our

  1614. church,

  1615. for our

  1616. churches,

  1617. that we

  1618. would be

  1619. transformed

  1620. by the

  1621. gospel

  1622. constantly,

  1623. so that

  1624. we would

  1625. want to

  1626. live to

  1627. please

  1628. Jesus.

  1629. Let's

  1630. do that

  1631. this

  1632. night.

  1633. Lord,

  1634. our God,

  1635. we thank

  1636. you for

  1637. how wonderful

  1638. the gospel

  1639. is.

  1640. Thank you

  1641. for the

  1642. many pictures

  1643. that we

  1644. find through

  1645. your word

  1646. that speak

  1647. of the

  1648. life-transforming

  1649. power of

  1650. power of

  1651. the work of

  1652. Jesus for

  1653. us in

  1654. his perfect

  1655. life,

  1656. death,

  1657. and

  1658. resurrection.

  1659. Thank you

  1660. that by

  1661. faith in

  1662. Jesus,

  1663. we are

  1664. qualified for

  1665. that eternal

  1666. inheritance that

  1667. is laid up

  1668. for us,

  1669. that treasure

  1670. in heaven

  1671. that can never

  1672. be lost or

  1673. taken from

  1674. us.

  1675. We thank you

  1676. that you

  1677. have rescued

  1678. us,

  1679. taken us from

  1680. darkness into

  1681. your wonderful

  1682. light,

  1683. that you

  1684. have set

  1685. us free

  1686. from slavery,

  1687. giving us

  1688. true freedom

  1689. in Jesus.

  1690. We thank you

  1691. that he came

  1692. to pay that

  1693. redemption price

  1694. to forgive

  1695. our sins,

  1696. to bring us

  1697. peace with

  1698. you,

  1699. our God.

  1700. Lord,

  1701. we pray

  1702. that you

  1703. would help

  1704. our hearts

  1705. to be drawn

  1706. to the gospel,

  1707. our minds

  1708. to be drawn

  1709. to the wonderful

  1710. truth of

  1711. the gospel,

  1712. so that it

  1713. would change

  1714. how we live,

  1715. that it

  1716. would influence

  1717. how we

  1718. approach each

  1719. day and

  1720. each situation.

  1721. Lord,

  1722. may you give

  1723. to us as a

  1724. church and

  1725. as families

  1726. and as

  1727. individuals that

  1728. guiding principle

  1729. that we would

  1730. want to live

  1731. to please

  1732. Jesus,

  1733. who lived

  1734. and died

  1735. and rose

  1736. for us.

  1737. We pray

  1738. that you

  1739. would give

  1740. the spirit

  1741. to us,

  1742. so that we

  1743. would have

  1744. wisdom

  1745. to know

  1746. what that

  1747. looks like

  1748. in our

  1749. lives and

  1750. in our

  1751. situations.

  1752. We know

  1753. that we're

  1754. all different

  1755. and our

  1756. lives are

  1757. different.

  1758. The opportunities

  1759. and challenges

  1760. we face

  1761. will differ

  1762. from person

  1763. to person,

  1764. but Lord,

  1765. you know us

  1766. and your spirit

  1767. can help us

  1768. and equip us.

  1769. And so we

  1770. pray that he

  1771. would do

  1772. just that,

  1773. that he would

  1774. cause us to

  1775. be asking

  1776. ourselves,

  1777. how can we

  1778. walk worthy

  1779. of the Lord

  1780. today?

  1781. And that by

  1782. the spirit

  1783. you would

  1784. help us

  1785. so that we

  1786. would give

  1787. glory to

  1788. you,

  1789. our great

  1790. God and

  1791. Saviour.

  1792. Amen.

  1793. Now we

  1794. will close

  1795. our time

  1796. singing the

  1797. great hymn

  1798. from John

  1799. Newton,

  1800. Amazing Grace,

  1801. and we'll

  1802. stand together

  1803. to sing.
