  1. Father, we come now to think upon your word.

  2. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would move and work in our lives

  3. so that the very best of our minds, Father, might come to listen and attend to your word,

  4. that we might have a humble spirit, Father, so that you might teach us,

  5. that we might learn, that we might, if necessary, be rebuked, change how we think.

  6. We ask, Father, that you help us to use the best of our mind.

  7. We ask that you humble our minds so that our mind might be changed.

  8. We ask that you make us hungry to know more of you and know more of your truth.

  9. And at the same time, Father, we ask that you would grant us that even deeper humility, Father,

  10. that acknowledges that unless you draw us to yourselves,

  11. even the most brilliant mind will not understand you or know you in a saving way.

  12. So, Father, we ask that you would do this wonderful work in our lives as we think upon your word,

  13. and now all these things we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  14. Please be seated.

  15. So, it's good to be back.

  16. If God wanted people to believe in him, why doesn't he do more to prove it to them?

  17. Why doesn't he do miracles?

  18. Why doesn't he show up?

  19. Why doesn't he reveal himself?

  20. And it's a very, very common idea, and I have to confess that for a long time I sort of thought that as well.

  21. I sort of wish that God would show up in some particular way,

  22. that there'd be some dramatic miracle that would make it easier for me to believe in him

  23. or maybe help me to start to believe him for the very first time.

  24. It's a very common thing.

  25. Maybe some of you have thought that.

  26. Maybe some of you are thinking that right now.

  27. The Bible story that we're going to look at today has some interesting things to say about that, believe it or not.

  28. Sort of some interesting observations in the form of a story.

  29. So, it'd be a great help to me.

  30. The words will be on the screen.

  31. We're doing a sermon series called Real Jesus, Real Miracles.

  32. We're going to look at a miracle story,

  33. so something where Jesus shows up, where he does a remarkable miracle,

  34. and we see how that impacts different people.

  35. So, it'd be a great help if you have your own Bibles to open them up

  36. because it can be very helpful to make notes in your own Bible

  37. or just to see it in the one that you actually use yourself for reading.

  38. And it's Luke chapter 17, verses 11 to 19.

    Luke 17:11–19

  39. That's the story that we're going to look at.

  40. And it's interesting.

  41. All of the other miracle stories that we've been looking at,

  42. that we will look at over this series, are in several Gospels.

  43. This story is only told in Luke.

  44. Luke, but if you are an old Anglican, old in spirit, maybe not in body,

  45. and you're used to the old lectionary,

  46. this story actually is one of the stories that's read every year

  47. in the cycle of the readings.

  48. So, the prayer book thought it was an important story,

  49. and that's one of the reasons I put it down,

  50. even though it's the only miracle story we'll look at

  51. that's only found in one of the Gospels, not all of them.

  52. And just before we look at this story as well,

  53. just to understand a little bit about it,

  54. what we're looking at now,

  55. you know, I love saying this,

  56. you probably start to fade out when I start to say it.

  57. It now is in the Bible,

  58. and it all looks fancy and fancy paper,

  59. but what we're reading when we're reading the Gospel of Luke,

  60. look at how it begins, look at how Acts begins.

  61. There was a doctor who was a pagan,

  62. who became a Christian,

  63. and he decided that he would write a biography of Jesus

  64. based on eyewitness testimony.

  65. And that's what we have in front of us.

  66. It was probably written in the mid to late 60s,

  67. so it was written within 30 years of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

  68. It was written while there were many eyewitnesses around.

  69. You could have just said,

  70. sorry, but that's not right.

  71. You got that wrong.

  72. That didn't happen.

  73. And it's an eyewitness biography

  74. written while many eyewitnesses were alive,

  75. and that's what we're reading,

  76. and here it goes with verse 11 of chapter 17.

  77. It starts this way.

  78. It says,

  79. on the way to Jerusalem,

  80. Jesus was passing along between Samaria and Galilee.

  81. Now, just pause here for a second.

  82. If you go back, remember this is a story.

  83. It's a biography.

  84. It's a story.

  85. And the way that Luke writes the Gospel,

  86. the story,

  87. is that in chapter 9,

  88. Jesus reveals to his disciples,

  89. he's been with them for a couple of years,

  90. but he reveals to them in chapter 9

  91. that he's going to start going to Jerusalem,

  92. and that he's going to go to Jerusalem,

  93. and this time when he goes to Jerusalem,

  94. something very different is going to happen.

  95. This time when he goes to Jerusalem,

  96. he's going to be captured,

  97. he's going to die on the cross,

  98. and he's going to rise from the dead.

  99. And everything that happens in the Gospel,

  100. in this story from Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  101. right up until he actually gets to Jerusalem,

  102. it's all Jesus walking towards Jerusalem.

  103. And it's all,

  104. it's going to be reiterated time and time and time again

  105. to the disciples.

  106. By the way,

  107. we're going to Jerusalem.

  108. In Jerusalem,

  109. I'm going to die on the cross,

  110. and I'm going to rise from the dead.

  111. And so he's on his way to Jerusalem.

  112. And there's an interesting thing here,

  113. which isn't translated into the English,

  114. and it happens twice in this story.

  115. There's a word,

  116. a phrase,

  117. in the story,

  118. which isn't translated into English,

  119. because it messes up the flow of the English.

  120. But what it is,

  121. is it says,

  122. it happened that.

  123. I was just,

  124. on Friday,

  125. when I was working in a certain coffee shop,

  126. on my sermon,

  127. one of the people who talks to me regularly,

  128. come up and says,

  129. well,

  130. what are you preaching on this week?

  131. And so I started to tell him the story

  132. that I was going to be preaching on.

  133. And he said,

  134. well,

  135. we know that that can't happen.

  136. There's no miracles can't happen.

  137. So is it an allegory?

  138. Is it a myth?

  139. Like,

  140. what's going on?

  141. And I just paused.

  142. I said,

  143. like,

  144. one moment here.

  145. Here's the ground rule.

  146. This fellow that talked to me,

  147. he's written several books

  148. of a sort of a cultural analysis.

  149. Those are the types of books that he's written.

  150. And so I said to him,

  151. listen here,

  152. hold on for a second here.

  153. You have to understand something.

  154. And he had one of his books

  155. right with him on the table.

  156. I said,

  157. if I took that book of yours

  158. and started reading it

  159. and said to you,

  160. this is wonderful poetry,

  161. you'd be offended.

  162. You'd say,

  163. it's not poetry.

  164. You don't know how to read.

  165. It's a work of cultural criticism.

  166. Or if I said,

  167. this is a wonderful myth.

  168. He said,

  169. no,

  170. no,

  171. it's not a myth.

  172. I'm giving you history.

  173. I'm giving you sociological facts.

  174. It's not a myth.

  175. You'd be offended

  176. if I said that it was a type of writing

  177. that it isn't.

  178. So I said,

  179. what you need to do

  180. is you need to extend that

  181. same

  182. respect

  183. to the story.

  184. And I can tell you that Luke,

  185. and I said,

  186. you go back,

  187. just the same thing

  188. I just said to you.

  189. 69 times

  190. in the Gospel of Luke,

  191. he says,

  192. and it happened that.

  193. It's a marker to say

  194. that I'm writing history.

  195. It's not once upon a time,

  196. it's,

  197. and it happened that.

  198. And if you read the beginning

  199. of the book,

  200. he says he's writing a biography.

  201. So here's the thing.

  202. I almost said his name.

  203. Here's the thing,

  204. Bob.

  205. You might say that he's full of bleep.

  206. You might say that he's a liar.

  207. You might say all sorts of things,

  208. but what you can't say

  209. is that it's a myth or an allegory.

  210. He's claiming he's writing history,

  211. and you have to deal with it

  212. on that level.

  213. And this is one of those times

  214. he nodded and said,

  215. well,

  216. that makes a bit of sense.

  217. I mean, he's a writer.

  218. He understands that.

  219. So he still thinks

  220. it's a bunch of hooey.

  221. He thinks it's wrong,

  222. but at least he now understands

  223. that it's history.

  224. And so that's what happens here.

  225. Luke is recording this story.

  226. And once again,

  227. on the way to Jerusalem,

  228. and because you haven't been reading

  229. from the beginning,

  230. you don't,

  231. there's this reminder why

  232. the first time Jesus said

  233. he was going to Jerusalem,

  234. he told them,

  235. I'm going there to die.

  236. So now,

  237. okay,

  238. he's going there to die.

  239. And he was passing along

  240. between Samaria and Galilee.

  241. Verse 12,

  242. and as Jesus entered a village,

  243. he was met by 10 lepers

  244. who stood at a distance

  245. and lifted up their voices saying,

  246. Jesus,

  247. master,

  248. have mercy on us.

  249. Now,

  250. just sort of,

  251. you want to pause.

  252. I don't know if there's any lepers

  253. in Ottawa.

  254. I mean,

  255. like literal lepers.

  256. There's lots of social lepers

  257. in Ottawa,

  258. but that's a separate type of thing.

  259. People who aren't sort of welcome

  260. in polite society.

  261. And,

  262. but,

  263. there's still,

  264. I think it's,

  265. I looked it up on the internet,

  266. so it has to be true.

  267. I think it said something

  268. about somewhere between,

  269. actually,

  270. it's one of those things

  271. that has to be true,

  272. but I saw two different numbers

  273. on the internet.

  274. There you go.

  275. 100 to 200,000 cases

  276. of leprosy

  277. are diagnosed

  278. every year.

  279. New cases are diagnosed

  280. every year

  281. in the United States of America.

  282. United States.

  283. All in the southern states.

  284. And there's a,

  285. I can't remember what it was,

  286. but it was like

  287. several million new cases

  288. of leprosy

  289. are diagnosed every year.

  290. Over half of them

  291. in India.

  292. But it's a,

  293. it's a terrible disease.

  294. It's now curable.

  295. And in fact,

  296. the World Health Organization

  297. funded through

  298. richer countries,

  299. primarily the United States,

  300. of course,

  301. but also probably Canada

  302. in a small way.

  303. Anywhere in the world

  304. that a person's diagnosed

  305. with leprosy,

  306. all the medication,

  307. drugs are free.

  308. And it doesn't reverse

  309. the problem,

  310. but it will at least

  311. heal the problem.

  312. But in the ancient society,

  313. and it would be

  314. probably the same now

  315. if you've seen pictures

  316. of lepers

  317. with their blindness,

  318. the disfigurement

  319. of their fingers,

  320. the disfigurement

  321. on their feet,

  322. maybe missing limbs

  323. as well altogether,

  324. they were outcasts.

  325. They weren't allowed

  326. to be part,

  327. and especially in this Jewish

  328. and in Samaritan culture,

  329. they weren't allowed

  330. to really be part

  331. of the community.

  332. They had to live separate.

  333. They could no longer

  334. live with their wives,

  335. their wife or their kids.

  336. They couldn't go to events.

  337. They couldn't go to parties.

  338. They had to live separate.

  339. They were unclean,

  340. not able to be part of society.

  341. So when they're standing there

  342. from a distance,

  343. it's not because

  344. they're just sort of like

  345. heckling Jesus

  346. as he walks by,

  347. you know,

  348. hey, dude,

  349. you know,

  350. or anything.

  351. No, it's not like that.

  352. They're just,

  353. they're respecting

  354. the social norm

  355. because bad things

  356. would happen to them

  357. if they disregarded it.

  358. And it's very interesting.

  359. It's important to the story.

  360. Remember I said how this,

  361. I began by saying

  362. how people

  363. sort of think,

  364. why doesn't God

  365. just show up

  366. in a very powerful way?

  367. And if he did,

  368. then I'd believe in him.

  369. And in this particular case here,

  370. they say,

  371. it's a very odd thing.

  372. They say,

  373. Jesus, Master,

  374. have mercy on us.

  375. And it's the only place

  376. in all of the New Testament

  377. that the word Master

  378. is found,

  379. but it's a completely

  380. non-religious term.

  381. It's boss.

  382. Hey, boss.

  383. Boss man.

  384. Hey, boss.

  385. Have mercy on us.

  386. And have mercy on us

  387. is an indirect

  388. and polite way

  389. of saying,

  390. could you heal us?

  391. They've heard about him.

  392. They're not making any claim

  393. that he's a rabbi,

  394. that he's special.

  395. They're just calling him boss.

  396. Very neutral term.

  397. And they ask indirectly

  398. that he'd heal them.

  399. I don't know how many of you

  400. have seen a wedding

  401. that I've done.

  402. I have lots of fun

  403. at the rehearsal

  404. when I explain something

  405. to the couple

  406. that's getting married.

  407. And if you've been

  408. in the wedding,

  409. sometimes I say something,

  410. sometimes I don't.

  411. But I like to say

  412. that there's an Anglican

  413. polite,

  414. indirect way

  415. of saying,

  416. you may kiss the bride.

  417. And I say,

  418. if you've ever heard

  419. a wedding that I've done,

  420. I'll say,

  421. you may now greet each other,

  422. which means kiss.

  423. But it's just,

  424. it's a bit of an indirect,

  425. it's a very old

  426. prayer book

  427. way of referring to it.

  428. And here,

  429. they're indirectly

  430. making a request

  431. for healing.

  432. And obviously,

  433. if he's going to heal them,

  434. it's going to be

  435. an act of mercy

  436. on his part,

  437. that he's paying attention

  438. to them,

  439. he's showing them mercy.

  440. But they're asking

  441. for healing.

  442. So what does Jesus do?

  443. Does he go over?

  444. Does he touch them?

  445. What does he do?

  446. No, he keeps

  447. the same distance

  448. in this particular case.

  449. Look what happens

  450. in verse 14.

  451. When Jesus saw them,

  452. he said to them,

  453. he would have had

  454. to yell back,

  455. go and show yourselves

  456. to the priests.

  457. And as they went,

  458. they were cleansed.

  459. Now,

  460. they hear what

  461. he asked them to do

  462. and they go.

  463. Now,

  464. they've asked for healing

  465. in an indirect type of way.

  466. And Jesus says,

  467. I'm going to heal you

  468. in an indirect way.

  469. Because what they would

  470. have known

  471. is that the only way

  472. that they could rejoin

  473. society,

  474. that they could go back

  475. to making money,

  476. having businesses,

  477. getting married,

  478. playing sports,

  479. going to the temple,

  480. going to whatever,

  481. the synagogue,

  482. the only way

  483. they could do that

  484. is if a priest

  485. authenticates

  486. that the leprosy

  487. is gone.

  488. So they would hear

  489. Jesus saying,

  490. go to the priests

  491. and show yourselves.

  492. And they would take it.

  493. But that means

  494. that somehow or another,

  495. they don't know how,

  496. that they'll be healed

  497. as they go.

  498. And as they go,

  499. they're cleansed.

  500. You'll see in a moment

  501. that that also means healed.

  502. That actually,

  503. they're healed

  504. the leprosy is gone

  505. and that they're now

  506. clean.

  507. They're now able

  508. to rejoin society.

  509. That's what Jesus

  510. does for them.

  511. Now you might wonder,

  512. how is it that they know

  513. they were cleansed?

  514. How did they know?

  515. Well, there's two things

  516. that went on here probably.

  517. And the first thing,

  518. which had to be there,

  519. it has to be there.

  520. If it's not there,

  521. it's not a healing

  522. or a cleansing.

  523. And this is actually sort of,

  524. if you just try to picture it,

  525. I don't know if you have

  526. an imagination

  527. that you could try to picture

  528. what would happen,

  529. it would be that

  530. they're walking along

  531. and all of a sudden

  532. as they're walking along,

  533. I'll take off my sand,

  534. all of a sudden

  535. as they're walking along

  536. they hit something

  537. and they go,

  538. ow!

  539. And then there'd be

  540. this pause.

  541. And one of them said,

  542. did you just say ow?

  543. And you go,

  544. my foot hurts.

  545. I'm healed.

  546. Experiencing pain

  547. would show them

  548. that they'd been healed.

  549. Over a third of all people

  550. with leprosy,

  551. loose,

  552. have numbness

  553. and no longer feel pain

  554. on their face,

  555. their arms,

  556. and their legs.

  557. It's one of the main reasons

  558. why they end up

  559. having stumps for fingers

  560. and losing limbs

  561. because they can have

  562. their hand in the fire

  563. and not feel the fire.

  564. They can drop a large rock

  565. on their foot

  566. and not feel it.

  567. They won't feel

  568. the pain of the infection

  569. to have it clean.

  570. They don't feel pain.

  571. And so,

  572. incontrovertibly,

  573. one of the ways

  574. that they would know

  575. as they're walking

  576. that they'd been healed

  577. is when they go,

  578. ouch!

  579. In fact,

  580. it could have been

  581. a very, very funny situation.

  582. It could be that

  583. all of a sudden

  584. you'd see them,

  585. you try it!

  586. And they kick a rock,

  587. ouch!

  588. That hurts!

  589. And before you know it,

  590. they're crying with the pain

  591. and laughing

  592. and it would look like

  593. the weirdest thing

  594. in the world.

  595. Ten guys hurting themselves

  596. and cheering

  597. and high-fiving

  598. and laughing

  599. because they're healed.

  600. They feel pain.

  601. The leprosy's gone.

  602. The leprosy's gone.

  603. Now, it could very well be

  604. as well

  605. that at the same time

  606. that they feel pain

  607. that Jesus does

  608. this other miracle

  609. as well

  610. that

  611. the fingers

  612. that were gone

  613. are there.

  614. The toes

  615. that were gone

  616. are there.

  617. The eye

  618. that was blind

  619. can now see.

  620. The Bible's not clear.

  621. It could very well be

  622. that that's also part

  623. of what the miracle is.

  624. But it's also really important

  625. to understand

  626. that if

  627. their fingers

  628. were regrown

  629. and their eye

  630. was remade

  631. and their foot

  632. was regrown

  633. but there was no pain,

  634. they would only be

  635. in deeper despair.

  636. Because how much despair

  637. would it be

  638. to have your fingers

  639. regrow

  640. but you know

  641. that the leprosy

  642. is still there

  643. and you're going

  644. to be banging

  645. your finger

  646. and banging your toe

  647. and before you know it

  648. you're back

  649. to all of the disfigurement.

  650. You haven't been healed.

  651. So whether or not

  652. Jesus actually

  653. regrows fingers,

  654. I think he did.

  655. I think he,

  656. all of a sudden

  657. there were fingers,

  658. there were toes,

  659. there was an eye

  660. but at the same time

  661. to cure the leprosy

  662. there was

  663. the restoration

  664. of the nerve endings,

  665. the disease is gone,

  666. they feel pain.

  667. That's what they do.

  668. Remember I said to you

  669. that what Luke

  670. is writing here

  671. is he's claiming

  672. this is a true story.

  673. This is something

  674. that really happened.

  675. If Luke was able

  676. to come

  677. and be here

  678. amongst Canadians

  679. he would say

  680. that if you could have

  681. a time machine

  682. and go back in time

  683. you would see this

  684. happen yourself as well.

  685. If I took you

  686. to the right village

  687. you would see

  688. this happen yourself.

  689. This really happened.

  690. It's a remarkable miracle.

  691. It's not a spell.

  692. It's not medicine.

  693. It's not prayer.

  694. Jesus doesn't say

  695. Father heal them.

  696. He doesn't come

  697. and touch them.

  698. He doesn't do anything.

  699. He doesn't do anything

  700. like the magicians

  701. and the sorcerers do

  702. that would have been

  703. present in Jewish

  704. and Samaritan

  705. and pagan culture.

  706. He doesn't do anything

  707. that a doctor

  708. would have done.

  709. He doesn't even do anything

  710. like an Old Testament saint

  711. or you and I

  712. would do where we pray.

  713. He merely wills it

  714. from a distance

  715. and the leprosy

  716. is gone

  717. the nerve endings

  718. are restored

  719. and quite likely

  720. the limbs

  721. are remade

  722. all merely

  723. by willing it

  724. and it

  725. is so.

  726. Remember I said

  727. why doesn't God

  728. just show up

  729. and do a remarkable miracle?

  730. I've shared the gospel

  731. with so many people

  732. and they don't seem

  733. to come to faith

  734. right then.

  735. Like why isn't it

  736. that he just doesn't

  737. give me that ability

  738. that I could say

  739. here cut off your fingers

  740. I'm going to pray for you

  741. they're going to grow

  742. right back.

  743. You know

  744. why doesn't he do

  745. something like that?

  746. Like you know

  747. surely if he did

  748. something like that

  749. all sorts of people

  750. would become Christians

  751. and that's what we think

  752. but what happens

  753. in the story?

  754. Well let's see

  755. what happens

  756. in the story

  757. verse 15

  758. then one of them

  759. remember ten of them

  760. are healed

  761. one of them

  762. out of the ten

  763. one of them

  764. when he saw

  765. that he was healed

  766. turned back

  767. praising God

  768. with a loud voice

  769. and he fell on his face

  770. at Jesus' feet

  771. giving him thanks

  772. now he was a Samaritan

  773. only one

  774. and it's very very

  775. interesting

  776. in the language here

  777. the three things

  778. he's giving thanks

  779. praising God

  780. and the falling on his face

  781. is an act of worship

  782. he praises God

  783. he starts to

  784. to worship Jesus

  785. and giving him thanks

  786. I think it's like 37

  787. the word for thanks

  788. there is the word

  789. that we get Eucharist from

  790. and all the way

  791. through the New Testament

  792. it's only

  793. that word is only used

  794. when it's in a reference

  795. to God

  796. it's one of the small

  797. indirect ways

  798. that the Bible

  799. affirms that Jesus is God

  800. he praises God

  801. he worships Jesus

  802. and he gives thanks

  803. to God

  804. for what's happened

  805. and he's a Samaritan

  806. now we're all

  807. very well instructed

  808. in the Bible

  809. but one of the things

  810. you have to remember

  811. if you ever tell a story

  812. like this to a non-Christian

  813. is that for non-Christians

  814. when they hear

  815. the word Samaritan

  816. if they understand it at all

  817. they're liable to think

  818. that Samaritans

  819. are the good guys

  820. why?

  821. because one of the few

  822. Bible stories

  823. that most non-Christians

  824. might know

  825. is the story

  826. of the good Samaritan

  827. Samaritans are good

  828. and so one of the things

  829. you have to understand

  830. about this is

  831. and this is a Canadian

  832. analogy here

  833. I'm not making this

  834. as

  835. I'm not making any type

  836. of political content

  837. but this is just how

  838. most Canadians think

  839. okay

  840. so the analogy

  841. I would say

  842. no you have to understand

  843. that from a Jewish perspective

  844. Samaritans are the bad guys

  845. that's the whole point

  846. of the story

  847. they're the unclean

  848. they're the unwashed

  849. they're the ones

  850. you don't want to go near

  851. they're the ones

  852. who are confused

  853. they're heretics

  854. they don't think

  855. the right way

  856. it's a story

  857. of you know

  858. a really really good

  859. social justice warrior

  860. getting hurt

  861. and by the side

  862. of the road

  863. and you know

  864. the liberal

  865. goes by

  866. and the NDP

  867. goes by

  868. and the Green Party

  869. person goes by

  870. and then

  871. a good old boy

  872. with a big fat gut

  873. with a

  874. I love Trump

  875. and an NRA sticker

  876. on his truck

  877. he stops

  878. and helps

  879. the social justice warrior

  880. for Canadians

  881. that's the Samaritan

  882. the good old boy

  883. Trump loving

  884. NRA supporter

  885. for a Canadian

  886. we don't like

  887. those people

  888. that's a Samaritan

  889. it's a shock

  890. but one person

  891. out of ten

  892. the other nine

  893. they go on

  894. they

  895. they go to

  896. get cleansed

  897. so they can go

  898. and start making money

  899. so they can start

  900. making babies

  901. so that they can

  902. they can get back

  903. to worship

  904. that they can go

  905. traveling

  906. that they can play sports

  907. like whatever it is

  908. all those things

  909. good things

  910. in and of themselves

  911. they go on

  912. to do all those things

  913. it's only one person

  914. and it's the worst

  915. possible person

  916. out of the ten

  917. who comes back

  918. and acknowledges

  919. Jesus as God

  920. and gives him thanks

  921. as if he's God

  922. so what does Jesus say

  923. verse

  924. six

  925. verse 17

  926. then Jesus answered

  927. we're not ten

  928. cleansed

  929. Jesus makes the point

  930. if we've forgotten

  931. that nine of them

  932. saw something remarkable

  933. it's saying something

  934. very important

  935. about our heart

  936. that what we can

  937. understand is this

  938. and there's constant

  939. stories like this

  940. in the Bible

  941. time after time

  942. after time

  943. after time

  944. after time

  945. the thing that

  946. keeps us from Jesus

  947. isn't that God

  948. doesn't do a miracle

  949. in front of us

  950. now the rest of the

  951. gospel is going to

  952. talk about that more

  953. but in a powerful

  954. story level

  955. it makes it very

  956. clear to us

  957. for nine of the ten

  958. ninety percent of them

  959. the miracle made no

  960. difference in their

  961. lives whatsoever

  962. zero

  963. zilch

  964. verse 17

  965. again

  966. then Jesus answered

  967. we're not ten

  968. cleansed

  969. where are the nine

  970. was no one found

  971. to return and give

  972. praise to God

  973. except this

  974. foreigner

  975. now just sort of

  976. pause there

  977. that word

  978. foreigner is the

  979. only place in the

  980. New Testament

  981. that that word is

  982. found

  983. and it sounds a

  984. little bit like

  985. it's a bit of a

  986. racist thing for a

  987. lot of Canadians

  988. when they hear it

  989. it sounds like a

  990. bit of a put down

  991. but it's actually a

  992. really significant

  993. word

  994. because

  995. Josephus reports

  996. and the Jewish

  997. readers of this

  998. gospel would have

  999. understood

  1000. that if you went

  1001. to the temple

  1002. to pray

  1003. you come to an

  1004. important gate

  1005. and it would say

  1006. no foreigners

  1007. allowed to enter

  1008. and the exact

  1009. same word

  1010. that bars

  1011. non-Jews

  1012. is the word

  1013. that Jesus

  1014. uses here

  1015. and so

  1016. Jesus

  1017. well look what

  1018. he says in

  1019. verse 19

  1020. he said

  1021. rise and go

  1022. your way

  1023. your faith

  1024. has saved

  1025. you

  1026. your faith

  1027. has saved

  1028. you

  1029. it's talking

  1030. about some

  1031. completely new

  1032. thing that God

  1033. is doing

  1034. in a sense

  1035. it's not a new

  1036. thing

  1037. it's just really

  1038. going back

  1039. to what God

  1040. had said he was

  1041. going to do

  1042. through Abraham

  1043. if you read

  1044. Genesis 12

    Genesis 12:1–3

  1045. verses 1 to 3

  1046. it's not that

  1047. salvation is going

  1048. to come through

  1049. the Jews

  1050. for the entire

  1051. world

  1052. and we see

  1053. this Jewish

  1054. boy Jesus

  1055. and through

  1056. him and what

  1057. he has done

  1058. and what he

  1059. accomplishes

  1060. it is through

  1061. him that a

  1062. foreigner

  1063. who before

  1064. is kept

  1065. far from

  1066. God

  1067. is now

  1068. able to

  1069. come and

  1070. be at the

  1071. very feet

  1072. of Jesus

  1073. and to be

  1074. made right

  1075. with God

  1076. it's not a

  1077. put down

  1078. word

  1079. it's a

  1080. word that

  1081. for Jewish

  1082. readers at

  1083. the time

  1084. would have

  1085. gobsmacked

  1086. them

  1087. Jesus

  1088. carefully

  1089. picks the

  1090. word that

  1091. was on the

  1092. walls of

  1093. the temple

  1094. and says

  1095. this person

  1096. is saved

  1097. now what

  1098. do some

  1099. of these

  1100. things all

  1101. sort of

  1102. mean for

  1103. us

  1104. you know

  1105. I was having

  1106. a conversation

  1107. with somebody

  1108. this week

  1109. and one

  1110. of the

  1111. things I

  1112. tried to

  1113. get across

  1114. to him

  1115. is this

  1116. he was

  1117. having

  1118. here's the

  1119. thing I was

  1120. trying to

  1121. get across

  1122. to him

  1123. I said

  1124. to him

  1125. you know

  1126. what

  1127. if life

  1128. and death

  1129. are both

  1130. natural

  1131. why is it

  1132. that you

  1133. that we

  1134. all sense

  1135. that life

  1136. is good

  1137. but not

  1138. death

  1139. if health

  1140. and sickness

  1141. are both

  1142. natural

  1143. why is it

  1144. that we

  1145. pay lots

  1146. of money

  1147. to doctors

  1148. to heal

  1149. people

  1150. but if there

  1151. was somebody

  1152. else

  1153. in fact

  1154. there's a

  1155. case in

  1156. the paper

  1157. right now

  1158. about a

  1159. man who

  1160. was intentionally

  1161. having

  1162. unprotected

  1163. sex

  1164. with other

  1165. men

  1166. intentionally

  1167. to give

  1168. them AIDS

  1169. to make

  1170. them HIV

  1171. positive

  1172. so why

  1173. is it

  1174. we throw

  1175. that guy

  1176. in jail

  1177. but we

  1178. give the

  1179. doctor

  1180. and the

  1181. nurse

  1182. lots of

  1183. money

  1184. but if

  1185. they're both

  1186. natural

  1187. because that

  1188. isn't that

  1189. true like

  1190. in nature

  1191. you have

  1192. health

  1193. and you

  1194. have

  1195. sickness

  1196. you have

  1197. life

  1198. and you

  1199. have

  1200. death

  1201. you have

  1202. light

  1203. and you

  1204. have

  1205. darkness

  1206. you have

  1207. kindness

  1208. and you

  1209. have

  1210. hatred

  1211. it's

  1212. all

  1213. natural

  1214. so if

  1215. these things

  1216. are all

  1217. natural

  1218. why is it

  1219. in a sense

  1220. that we

  1221. sense that

  1222. there's

  1223. something on

  1224. one hand

  1225. that's good

  1226. and proper

  1227. and right

  1228. and good

  1229. and the

  1230. other we

  1231. want to

  1232. say

  1233. shouldn't

  1234. be

  1235. like why

  1236. is that

  1237. have you

  1238. stopped to

  1239. think about

  1240. it

  1241. and he

  1242. tried to

  1243. then make

  1244. this claim

  1245. that from a

  1246. Christian point

  1247. of view

  1248. he said

  1249. George you

  1250. can say

  1251. that but

  1252. the problem

  1253. is that

  1254. that means

  1255. that God

  1256. has created

  1257. all those

  1258. evil things

  1259. and I

  1260. said no

  1261. no it's

  1262. not like

  1263. that

  1264. in fact

  1265. we had

  1266. this odd

  1267. conversation

  1268. and here's

  1269. one of the

  1270. things to

  1271. encourage you

  1272. I wish I

  1273. could tell

  1274. you he

  1275. said that

  1276. and right

  1277. away I

  1278. had this

  1279. perfect

  1280. reply

  1281. and before

  1282. you know

  1283. it he

  1284. was in

  1285. tears

  1286. and fell

  1287. on his

  1288. knees

  1289. in the

  1290. Starbucks

  1291. and gave

  1292. his life

  1293. to Jesus

  1294. and we

  1295. all go

  1296. hooray

  1297. no that's

  1298. not how

  1299. it worked

  1300. we did

  1301. have a

  1302. conversation

  1303. but it

  1304. was only

  1305. when I

  1306. was driving

  1307. home that

  1308. I came

  1309. up with

  1310. the analogy

  1311. that I

  1312. should have

  1313. given him

  1314. and the

  1315. analogy that

  1316. I should

  1317. have given

  1318. him is

  1319. that I

  1320. said you're

  1321. trying to

  1322. the mistake

  1323. you're making

  1324. is this

  1325. it's as if

  1326. I invite

  1327. my son

  1328. maybe who's

  1329. come from

  1330. another city

  1331. and he's

  1332. come back

  1333. from Calgary

  1334. my son

  1335. Jacob

  1336. and I

  1337. say I

  1338. got two

  1339. cottages

  1340. and you

  1341. can have

  1342. your choice

  1343. of one

  1344. cottage

  1345. or the

  1346. other

  1347. and in

  1348. one

  1349. cottage

  1350. everything's

  1351. broken

  1352. the fridge

  1353. is filled

  1354. with meat

  1355. and the

  1356. meat's

  1357. all rancid

  1358. and all

  1359. the vegetables

  1360. are rotten

  1361. and you

  1362. could choose

  1363. that cottage

  1364. you can choose

  1365. this other

  1366. cottage

  1367. and this other

  1368. cottage

  1369. everything works

  1370. there's air

  1371. conditioning

  1372. the lights

  1373. work

  1374. there's stocked

  1375. with great

  1376. food

  1377. you just

  1378. choose which

  1379. one of them

  1380. I've made

  1381. both of them

  1382. for you

  1383. you just

  1384. go ahead

  1385. and choose

  1386. and I said

  1387. that's not

  1388. how it works

  1389. you see

  1390. what the

  1391. Bible says

  1392. is this

  1393. is that the

  1394. Bible understands

  1395. and teaches

  1396. that God

  1397. that in a sense

  1398. if you think

  1399. about it

  1400. that all

  1401. things

  1402. I did use

  1403. this part

  1404. of it

  1405. that all

  1406. things came

  1407. to be as a

  1408. result of

  1409. light

  1410. life

  1411. and love

  1412. the Father

  1413. the Son

  1414. and the Holy Spirit

  1415. John's Gospel

  1416. compares them

  1417. with love

  1418. with life

  1419. with light

  1420. and light

  1421. life

  1422. and love

  1423. creates

  1424. all things

  1425. and one of the

  1426. reasons that

  1427. God made

  1428. human beings

  1429. is that so

  1430. we would love

  1431. him

  1432. that we would

  1433. have companionship

  1434. with him

  1435. and you can't

  1436. have love

  1437. and you can't

  1438. have companionship

  1439. without freedom

  1440. and if you

  1441. give somebody

  1442. freedom

  1443. there is

  1444. always a choice

  1445. that they will

  1446. use their freedom

  1447. not for love

  1448. not for companionship

  1449. for something

  1450. very different

  1451. I did use

  1452. this analogy

  1453. I didn't think

  1454. of the cottage

  1455. analogy

  1456. which is what

  1457. I should have

  1458. thought of

  1459. so I said

  1460. this is what

  1461. I would say

  1462. now if I could

  1463. go back in time

  1464. I'd say

  1465. so what you

  1466. have to understand

  1467. is it would

  1468. be like my son

  1469. Jacob coming

  1470. to spend

  1471. some time

  1472. and I say

  1473. oh you can

  1474. go use this

  1475. cottage for a week

  1476. and in the cottage

  1477. it's all perfect

  1478. the air conditioning

  1479. works

  1480. and the water

  1481. is clean

  1482. and the fridge

  1483. is stocked

  1484. with great food

  1485. and stuff

  1486. to drink

  1487. and then

  1488. Jacob goes

  1489. and he turns

  1490. off the fridge

  1491. and he makes

  1492. all the meat

  1493. rancid

  1494. and he pisses

  1495. in the stuff

  1496. and he makes

  1497. everything broken

  1498. and he doesn't

  1499. have anything

  1500. which is good

  1501. but I made

  1502. it all good

  1503. and you

  1504. threw out

  1505. the good

  1506. you made

  1507. the good

  1508. foul

  1509. you broke

  1510. things

  1511. and I said

  1512. that's

  1513. how it is

  1514. we've used

  1515. our freedom

  1516. and so

  1517. what we see

  1518. in this story

  1519. if you could

  1520. put up

  1521. the first point

  1522. is that

  1523. we now know

  1524. that we live

  1525. in a world

  1526. with brokenness

  1527. and evil

  1528. and death

  1529. on one hand

  1530. it's completely

  1531. natural

  1532. but we know

  1533. that it's not

  1534. really natural

  1535. it's not good

  1536. and so

  1537. what we see

  1538. in this story

  1539. is this

  1540. only health

  1541. himself

  1542. can do

  1543. what Jesus

  1544. did

  1545. only life

  1546. himself

  1547. can do

  1548. what the man

  1549. Jesus

  1550. did

  1551. and it's

  1552. really interesting

  1553. because when I

  1554. was writing

  1555. these things

  1556. I had to

  1557. keep fighting

  1558. I was writing

  1559. himself

  1560. but as I'm

  1561. writing himself

  1562. I want to

  1563. not make it

  1564. himself

  1565. I want to

  1566. make it

  1567. impersonal

  1568. I want to

  1569. say only

  1570. health

  1571. itself

  1572. can do

  1573. what Jesus

  1574. did

  1575. only life

  1576. itself

  1577. can do

  1578. what Jesus

  1579. did

  1580. as if

  1581. it's

  1582. something

  1583. impersonal

  1584. and I'm

  1585. greater

  1586. because a

  1587. person

  1588. a human

  1589. being

  1590. is greater

  1591. than the

  1592. impersonal

  1593. I'm

  1594. greater

  1595. than

  1596. electricity

  1597. I have

  1598. mind

  1599. intelligence

  1600. and I

  1601. want to

  1602. keep

  1603. putting

  1604. in

  1605. itself

  1606. but what

  1607. is being

  1608. revealed

  1609. here

  1610. only

  1611. health

  1612. himself

  1613. can see

  1614. a leper

  1615. and merely

  1616. by willing

  1617. make the

  1618. leper

  1619. well

  1620. only

  1621. life

  1622. and it's

  1623. not in

  1624. itself

  1625. health

  1626. is revealed

  1627. as a

  1628. person

  1629. life

  1630. is revealed

  1631. as a

  1632. person

  1633. and if

  1634. this story

  1635. really

  1636. happened

  1637. it means

  1638. that life

  1639. himself

  1640. stood

  1641. before the

  1642. lepers

  1643. health

  1644. himself

  1645. stood

  1646. before

  1647. the lepers

  1648. if you could

  1649. put up the

  1650. next point

  1651. and so

  1652. what we see

  1653. in this

  1654. story

  1655. is that

  1656. life

  1657. himself

  1658. has invaded

  1659. his dying

  1660. creation

  1661. to begin

  1662. to put

  1663. things right

  1664. and deliver

  1665. his fallen

  1666. image bearers

  1667. health

  1668. himself

  1669. has invaded

  1670. his sick

  1671. creation

  1672. to begin

  1673. to put

  1674. things right

  1675. and deliver

  1676. his fallen

  1677. image bearers

  1678. that's what

  1679. we see

  1680. that's

  1681. you see

  1682. the bible

  1683. is in

  1684. the course

  1685. of the

  1686. story

  1687. through a

  1688. narrative

  1689. the bible

  1690. through a

  1691. narrative

  1692. I mean

  1693. like in the

  1694. book of

  1695. romans

  1696. it might

  1697. just give

  1698. you certain

  1699. doctrinal

  1700. points very

  1701. clearly

  1702. but what

  1703. the story

  1704. does

  1705. is the

  1706. story

  1707. helps us

  1708. changes

  1709. our

  1710. imagination

  1711. our

  1712. consciousness

  1713. our

  1714. categories

  1715. in a way

  1716. that just

  1717. having like a

  1718. creed

  1719. doesn't do

  1720. it

  1721. and that

  1722. as we

  1723. realize

  1724. that's what

  1725. happened

  1726. you see

  1727. life

  1728. invading

  1729. life

  1730. himself

  1731. invades

  1732. and when

  1733. life

  1734. himself

  1735. invades

  1736. his dying

  1737. creation

  1738. he gives

  1739. life

  1740. he gives

  1741. health

  1742. he begins

  1743. to put

  1744. that right

  1745. now

  1746. how should

  1747. we then

  1748. live

  1749. we're just

  1750. going to

  1751. close with

  1752. the next

  1753. couple of

  1754. minutes

  1755. about a

  1756. couple of

  1757. very important

  1758. things

  1759. this first

  1760. point

  1761. or the

  1762. third

  1763. point

  1764. if you

  1765. could put

  1766. it up

  1767. right now

  1768. Andrew

  1769. this is

  1770. really

  1771. important

  1772. for us

  1773. as

  1774. Christians

  1775. I think

  1776. it's

  1777. statistics

  1778. are that

  1779. 2-3%

  1780. of Ottawa

  1781. the population

  1782. of Ottawa

  1783. are evangelicals

  1784. and I

  1785. you know

  1786. if you're

  1787. a guest

  1788. here

  1789. and you're

  1790. non-Christian

  1791. and this

  1792. might be

  1793. a bit

  1794. of a

  1795. surprise

  1796. to you

  1797. but let

  1798. me tell

  1799. you

  1800. often

  1801. if I

  1802. was to

  1803. say to

  1804. people

  1805. that I'm

  1806. an

  1807. evangelical

  1808. Christian

  1809. at a

  1810. party

  1811. of my

  1812. neighbors

  1813. they

  1814. smirk

  1815. or they

  1816. get

  1817. like

  1818. often

  1819. in lots

  1820. of

  1821. settings

  1822. I'm

  1823. a

  1824. leper

  1825. so what

  1826. should

  1827. we do

  1828. so in

  1829. this city

  1830. should we

  1831. just say

  1832. ah the

  1833. heck

  1834. with them

  1835. you know

  1836. let them

  1837. all go

  1838. to hell

  1839. in a

  1840. hand

  1841. basket

  1842. let

  1843. everything

  1844. fall

  1845. apart

  1846. like why

  1847. should I

  1848. do any

  1849. no no

  1850. or should

  1851. we just

  1852. like

  1853. only if

  1854. we want to

  1855. feed the

  1856. poor

  1857. do you

  1858. only feed

  1859. the poor

  1860. who are

  1861. actually going

  1862. to listen

  1863. to the

  1864. god

  1865. no

  1866. what does

  1867. this gospel

  1868. text tell

  1869. us

  1870. in this gospel

  1871. text

  1872. Jesus heals

  1873. ten people

  1874. nine of whom

  1875. have no regard

  1876. for him

  1877. whatsoever

  1878. afterwards

  1879. and he

  1880. doesn't say

  1881. well I'm going to

  1882. take it back

  1883. I'm not going

  1884. to do that

  1885. again

  1886. the story

  1887. teaches

  1888. this in a

  1889. very significant

  1890. way

  1891. it teaches

  1892. us

  1893. it teaches

  1894. us

  1895. that if

  1896. Jesus

  1897. bestows

  1898. blessing

  1899. and grace

  1900. on those

  1901. who do

  1902. not trust

  1903. in him

  1904. or have

  1905. regard

  1906. for him

  1907. so will

  1908. I

  1909. in a

  1910. very

  1911. powerful

  1912. way

  1913. this

  1914. story

  1915. is

  1916. saying

  1917. you know

  1918. what

  1919. if you

  1920. start

  1921. a

  1922. business

  1923. do

  1924. your

  1925. business

  1926. really

  1927. really

  1928. well

  1929. if

  1930. you

  1931. work

  1932. in

  1933. the

  1934. government

  1935. work

  1936. really

  1937. really

  1938. well

  1939. be

  1940. the

  1941. man

  1942. or the

  1943. woman

  1944. in your

  1945. office

  1946. or in

  1947. your

  1948. that

  1949. really

  1950. cares

  1951. about

  1952. your

  1953. employees

  1954. who

  1955. cares

  1956. for

  1957. the

  1958. other

  1959. people

  1960. who

  1961. are

  1962. with

  1963. you

  1964. do

  1965. the

  1966. best

  1967. you

  1968. can

  1969. if

  1970. you

  1971. do

  1972. a

  1973. business

  1974. start

  1975. a

  1976. business

  1977. go ahead

  1978. we want

  1979. you to

  1980. make

  1981. money

  1982. but at

  1983. the

  1984. same

  1985. time

  1986. do

  1987. make

  1988. business

  1989. in

  1990. such

  1991. a

  1992. way

  1993. that

  1994. people

  1995. are

  1996. really

  1997. blessed

  1998. that

  1999. services

  2000. that

  2001. they

  2002. really

  2003. need

  2004. that

  2005. they

  2006. get

  2007. to

  2008. receive

  2009. them

  2010. that

  2011. people

  2012. are

  2013. treated

  2014. with

  2015. respect

  2016. be

  2017. a

  2018. blessing

  2019. bestow

  2020. grace

  2021. be

  2022. the

  2023. one

  2024. who

  2025. turns

  2026. the

  2027. other

  2028. cheek

  2029. and

  2030. do

  2031. that

  2032. and

  2033. it

  2034. doesn't

  2035. matter

  2036. if

  2037. they're

  2038. a

  2039. satanist

  2040. an

  2041. atheist

  2042. a

  2043. Christian

  2044. a

  2045. Catholic

  2046. a

  2047. Muslim

  2048. a

  2049. Hindu

  2050. a

  2051. Buddhist

  2052. doesn't

  2053. matter

  2054. if

  2055. they're

  2056. rich

  2057. or

  2058. they're

  2059. poor

  2060. be

  2061. a

  2062. blessing

  2063. that's

  2064. how

  2065. you

  2066. should

  2067. live

  2068. and

  2069. why

  2070. should

  2071. you

  2072. live

  2073. that

  2074. why

  2075. because

  2076. if

  2077. Jesus

  2078. heals

  2079. nine

  2080. who

  2081. pay

  2082. no

  2083. regard

  2084. to

  2085. him

  2086. and

  2087. he

  2088. is

  2089. my

  2090. master

  2091. so

  2092. will

  2093. I

  2094. that's

  2095. how

  2096. we

  2097. should

  2098. then

  2099. live

  2100. but

  2101. it's

  2102. not

  2103. just

  2104. about

  2105. doing

  2106. good

  2107. because

  2108. in

  2109. this

  2110. story

  2111. Jesus

  2112. says

  2113. something

  2114. I

  2115. don't

  2116. know

  2117. if

  2118. you

  2119. noticed

  2120. that

  2121. he

  2122. says

  2123. something

  2124. very

  2125. very

  2126. significant

  2127. he

  2128. said

  2129. only

  2130. one

  2131. the

  2132. one

  2133. who

  2134. comes

  2135. back

  2136. only

  2137. he

  2138. does

  2139. he

  2140. say

  2141. to

  2142. him

  2143. your

  2144. faith

  2145. has

  2146. saved

  2147. you

  2148. the

  2149. implication

  2150. is

  2151. that

  2152. the

  2153. other

  2154. nine

  2155. are

  2156. lost

  2157. they're

  2158. not

  2159. saved

  2160. if

  2161. you

  2162. could

  2163. put

  2164. up

  2165. next

  2166. point

  2167. Paul

  2168. later

  2169. on

  2170. the

  2171. Bible

  2172. another

  2173. author

  2174. he

  2175. sort

  2176. of

  2177. captures

  2178. what's

  2179. happening

  2180. in

  2181. the

  2182. story

  2183. in

  2184. the

  2185. conclusion

  2186. of

  2187. the

  2188. story

  2189. he

  2190. says

  2191. but

  2192. God

  2193. being

  2194. rich

  2195. in

  2196. mercy

  2197. because

  2198. of

  2199. the

  2200. great

  2201. love

  2202. with

  2203. which

  2204. he

  2205. loved

  2206. us

  2207. even

  2208. when

  2209. we

  2210. were

  2211. dead

  2212. in

  2213. our

  2214. trespasses

  2215. made

  2216. us

  2217. alive

  2218. together

  2219. with

  2220. Christ

  2221. by

  2222. grace

  2223. you

  2224. have

  2225. been

  2226. saved

  2227. you

  2228. see

  2229. everything

  2230. in

  2231. the

  2232. story

  2233. in

  2234. this

  2235. story

  2236. here

  2237. all

  2238. of

  2239. its

  2240. lead

  2241. remember

  2242. I

  2243. said

  2244. it's

  2245. all

  2246. about

  2247. Jesus

  2248. going

  2249. to

  2250. Jerusalem

  2251. to

  2252. die

  2253. upon

  2254. the

  2255. cross

  2256. and

  2257. so

  2258. what

  2259. this

  2260. story

  2261. is

  2262. helping

  2263. us

  2264. to

  2265. understand

  2266. is

  2267. this

  2268. how

  2269. on

  2270. earth

  2271. could

  2272. a

  2273. man

  2274. who

  2275. can

  2276. regrow

  2277. limbs

  2278. how

  2279. could

  2280. he

  2281. ever

  2282. possibly

  2283. die

  2284. on

  2285. the

  2286. cross

  2287. like

  2288. how

  2289. could

  2290. he

  2291. like

  2292. the

  2293. he

  2294. could

  2295. just

  2296. keep

  2297. healing

  2298. himself

  2299. that's

  2300. even if

  2301. he

  2302. didn't

  2303. want

  2304. to

  2305. use

  2306. his

  2307. power

  2308. just

  2309. to

  2310. get

  2311. off

  2312. the

  2313. cross

  2314. but

  2315. he

  2316. could

  2317. just

  2318. keep

  2319. healing

  2320. himself

  2321. he

  2322. loses

  2323. blood

  2324. through

  2325. his

  2326. head

  2327. and

  2328. through

  2329. his

  2330. arms

  2331. and

  2332. through

  2333. his

  2334. feet

  2335. he

  2336. just

  2337. creates

  2338. new

  2339. blood

  2340. and

  2341. necrosis

  2342. begins

  2343. to start

  2344. up around

  2345. those

  2346. wounds

  2347. he

  2348. just

  2349. creates

  2350. new

  2351. flesh

  2352. like

  2353. he

  2354. could

  2355. be

  2356. at

  2357. the

  2358. cross

  2359. he

  2360. would

  2361. never

  2362. die

  2363. how

  2364. can

  2365. life

  2366. die

  2367. how

  2368. can

  2369. health

  2370. die

  2371. only

  2372. if

  2373. he

  2374. dies

  2375. out

  2376. of

  2377. love

  2378. for

  2379. us

  2380. and

  2381. so

  2382. what

  2383. the

  2384. bible

  2385. is

  2386. showing

  2387. us

  2388. is

  2389. that

  2390. on

  2391. the

  2392. cross

  2393. not

  2394. just

  2395. a

  2396. clean

  2397. person

  2398. but

  2399. the

  2400. clean

  2401. itself

  2402. the

  2403. clean

  2404. himself

  2405. dies

  2406. for

  2407. the

  2408. unclean

  2409. health

  2410. himself

  2411. dies

  2412. for

  2413. the

  2414. sick

  2415. life

  2416. himself

  2417. dies

  2418. for

  2419. the

  2420. dying

  2421. light

  2422. itself

  2423. himself

  2424. dies

  2425. for

  2426. those

  2427. of

  2428. us

  2429. in

  2430. darkness

  2431. that

  2432. is

  2433. what's

  2434. happening

  2435. on

  2436. the

  2437. cross

  2438. and

  2439. it's

  2440. offered

  2441. to

  2442. the

  2443. lepers

  2444. to

  2445. the

  2446. samaritans

  2447. to

  2448. the

  2449. trump

  2450. supporters

  2451. to

  2452. the

  2453. social

  2454. justice

  2455. warriors

  2456. it's

  2457. offered

  2458. to

  2459. the

  2460. gay

  2461. activists

  2462. the

  2463. heterosexual

  2464. activists

  2465. the

  2466. abortionists

  2467. the

  2468. anti

  2469. abortionists

  2470. it's

  2471. offered

  2472. to

  2473. the

  2474. good

  2475. the

  2476. bad

  2477. the

  2478. ugly

  2479. and

  2480. everything

  2481. in

  2482. between

  2483. Jesus

  2484. dies

  2485. for

  2486. you

  2487. health

  2488. himself

  2489. dies

  2490. for

  2491. those

  2492. who

  2493. are

  2494. sick

  2495. if you

  2496. could

  2497. put up

  2498. the

  2499. final

  2500. point

  2501. if

  2502. Jesus

  2503. made

  2504. clear

  2505. that

  2506. he

  2507. came

  2508. and

  2509. lived

  2510. and

  2511. died

  2512. to

  2513. save

  2514. those

  2515. who

  2516. trust

  2517. in

  2518. him

  2519. so

  2520. will

  2521. I

  2522. so

  2523. will

  2524. I

  2525. please

  2526. stand

  2527. father

  2528. we

  2529. ask

  2530. that

  2531. you

  2532. would

  2533. bring

  2534. this

  2535. story

  2536. home

  2537. to

  2538. us

  2539. at

  2540. a

  2541. very

  2542. deep

  2543. and

  2544. powerful

  2545. level

  2546. father

  2547. that

  2548. you

  2549. would

  2550. bring

  2551. this

  2552. story

  2553. to

  2554. our

  2555. heart

  2556. father

  2557. I

  2558. confess

  2559. that

  2560. I

  2561. don't

  2562. know

  2563. why

  2564. you

  2565. don't

  2566. say

  2567. yes

  2568. to

  2569. all

  2570. of

  2571. my

  2572. prayers

  2573. I

  2574. don't

  2575. know

  2576. why

  2577. you

  2578. don't

  2579. say

  2580. yes

  2581. to

  2582. all

  2583. my

  2584. prayers

  2585. father

  2586. I

  2587. I

  2588. wouldn't

  2589. pray

  2590. it

  2591. if

  2592. I

  2593. didn't

  2594. want

  2595. you

  2596. to

  2597. say

  2598. yes

  2599. but

  2600. father

  2601. I

  2602. thank

  2603. you

  2604. so

  2605. much

  2606. for

  2607. this

  2608. story

  2609. that

  2610. you

  2611. reveal

  2612. to

  2613. me

  2614. that

  2615. you

  2616. are

  2617. health

  2618. you

  2619. are

  2620. life

  2621. and

  2622. you

  2623. hear

  2624. and

  2625. you

  2626. you

  2627. are

  2628. love

  2629. and

  2630. you

  2631. died

  2632. for

  2633. me

  2634. and

  2635. if

  2636. you

  2637. don't

  2638. answer

  2639. my

  2640. prayer

  2641. the

  2642. way

  2643. that

  2644. I

  2645. wish

  2646. you

  2647. would

  2648. answer

  2649. my

  2650. prayer

  2651. it's

  2652. not

  2653. because

  2654. you're

  2655. bad

  2656. it's

  2657. not

  2658. because

  2659. you

  2660. are

  2661. wisdom

  2662. and

  2663. I

  2664. am

  2665. not

  2666. you

  2667. are

  2668. light

  2669. and

  2670. I

  2671. am

  2672. not

  2673. you

  2674. are

  2675. life

  2676. and

  2677. I

  2678. am

  2679. not

  2680. you

  2681. are

  2682. love

  2683. and

  2684. I

  2685. am

  2686. not

  2687. you

  2688. you

  2689. know

  2690. and

  2691. I

  2692. don't

  2693. and

  2694. so

  2695. father

  2696. we

  2697. thank

  2698. you

  2699. so

  2700. much

  2701. for

  2702. this

  2703. story

  2704. bring

  2705. it

  2706. home

  2707. to

  2708. our

  2709. heart

  2710. grant

  2711. us

  2712. father

  2713. a

  2714. great

  2715. love

  2716. for

  2717. this

  2718. city

  2719. help

  2720. us

  2721. father

  2722. to

  2723. be

  2724. a

  2725. source

  2726. of

  2727. blessing

  2728. and

  2729. grace

  2730. that

  2731. is

  2732. bestowed

  2733. upon

  2734. all

  2735. whom

  2736. we

  2737. meet

  2738. and

  2739. at

  2740. the

  2741. same

  2742. time

  2743. father

  2744. we

  2745. help

  2746. you

  2747. ask

  2748. us

  2749. to

  2750. we

  2751. ask

  2752. that

  2753. you

  2754. would

  2755. help

  2756. us

  2757. to

  2758. understand

  2759. the

  2760. lostness

  2761. of

  2762. the

  2763. lost

  2764. and

  2765. the

  2766. importance

  2767. of

  2768. the

  2769. gospel

  2770. that

  2771. just

  2772. as

  2773. that

  2774. Samaritan

  2775. father

  2776. did

  2777. not

  2778. understand

  2779. everything

  2780. about

  2781. who

  2782. you

  2783. are

  2784. and

  2785. all

  2786. of

  2787. the

  2788. work

  2789. that

  2790. you

  2791. would

  2792. accomplish

  2793. but

  2794. still

  2795. he

  2796. trusted

  2797. in

  2798. you

  2799. and

  2800. all

  2801. those

  2802. works

  2803. that

  2804. you

  2805. would

  2806. do

  2807. in

  2808. this

  2809. life

  2810. father

  2811. help

  2812. us

  2813. to

  2814. share

  2815. the

  2816. gospel

  2817. knowing

  2818. that

  2819. you

  2820. are

  2821. still

  2822. drawing

  2823. people

  2824. to

  2825. yourself

  2826. and

  2827. all

  2828. these

  2829. things

  2830. we

  2831. ask

  2832. in

  2833. the

  2834. name

  2835. of

  2836. Jesus

  2837. your

  2838. son

  2839. and

  2840. our
