  1. One of the things at Watermark that we want to do is be a church which is also raising up other people to preach and to lead in different ways.

  2. So today's going to be a little bit different from normal. There's going to be two of us preaching.

  3. Don't worry, it's not going to go on until past your lunchtime.

  4. But Ed and myself will be preaching this morning and just bringing God's word to us as we continue the series looking at mission.

  5. But before we do that, I want to invite Gary and Iris to come and bring God's word to us in scripture reading.

  6. The scripture reading comes from Matthew and 1 Peter.

  7. Please follow along in your bulletin or on the screen.

  8. In Matthew chapter 28, we read,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  9. Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

  10. And when they saw him, they worshipped him.

  11. But some doubted.

  12. And Jesus came and said to them,

  13. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  14. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,

  15. baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  16. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  17. And behold, I am with you always,

  18. to the end of the age.

  19. And in 1 Peter chapter 3, we read,

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  20. Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?

  21. But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake,

  22. you will be blessed.

  23. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled.

  24. But in your hearts, honor Christ, the Lord as holy,

  25. always being prepared to make a defense to anyone

  26. who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.

  27. Yet do it with gentleness and respect,

  28. having a good conscience,

  29. so that when you are slandered,

  30. those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

  31. For it is better to suffer for doing good,

  32. if that should be God's will,

  33. than for doing evil.

  34. For Christ also suffered once for sins,

  35. the righteous for the unrighteous,

  36. that he might bring us to God,

  37. being put to death in the flesh,

  38. but made alive in the spirit.

  39. This is the word of God.

  40. God bless you.

  41. Amen.

  42. Hi, good morning, Watermark.

  43. My name is Ed.

  44. I'm one of the members here,

  45. and also one of the elders here.

  46. Now I just want to lead us into a time of pastoral prayer.

  47. It's not me praying,

  48. but it's Watermark praying to our sovereign and living God.

  49. So if I could just invite you to pray with me.

  50. Dear Heavenly Father,

  51. as we enter into this Lenten season,

  52. we thank you for your son, Jesus Christ,

  53. who advocates for our righteousness and salvation.

  54. We thank you for being a powerful and sovereign king,

  55. and yet a gentle servant king,

  56. who continues to pursue us individually.

  57. We pray for your Holy Spirit to minister to those who are affected by the COVID-19 virus,

  58. for those who are sick in Hubei and across the globe,

  59. for the health workers who are strained and pushed to their limits.

  60. We pray for those family who have experienced loss and are hurting.

  61. Families in China who may have had their relative pass away in Hubei

  62. and experience a scent of hopelessness because there's nothing they can do.

  63. The city remains closed and they cannot visit them.

  64. God, will you draw close to them.

  65. We pray that the Holy Spirit be with those who suffer and mourn,

  66. and now pouring of your grace and love upon them,

  67. may you let them know that there is a Heavenly Father that deeply cares for them,

  68. that they are not alone.

  69. We pray that as the world tackles COVID-19,

  70. we pray that you will use this time and situation for an awakening,

  71. for the hearts to become receptive to receiving you as Lord and Savior,

  72. as confidence in man-made things diminishes.

  73. We pray that as you take away busyness from the lives of people in Hong Kong and globally,

  74. that we will learn to be still and know to grow in all of you being God.

  75. We pray against fear.

  76. We pray against racism.

  77. We pray against division.

  78. We pray against bigotry.

  79. We pray that we will see each other as inherently valuable as you do during this time.

  80. We pray for unity among Hong Kong churches as you prepare your church for a new season.

  81. We pray that your will be done, that you will prune the church as you will,

  82. that you will bring unity to church as you will,

  83. and that we will be a united church ready to be your hands and feet for the revival in Hong Kong,

  84. that we pray that is to come.

  85. We pray for Watermark Church, that will be a body of Christ that takes on the mission of Christ.

  86. We pray that the missions, the value of missions, drops deep into every one of our hearts,

  87. and that we will take up our cross for the sake of the cross.

  88. We pray for an emboldening of our hearts.

  89. We pray for testimonies, many, many testimonies, as we step out in faith and encounter Jesus in the mission fields.

  90. We thank you, Heavenly Father, for who you are, for sustaining us and giving us this very day.

  91. And all these things we pray in Jesus' name.

  92. Amen.

  93. Now, last week, Kevin preached that to be a people of God, we are also the mission of God,

  94. that we were invited to take part of God's movement to restore a sinful and broken world to him.

  95. Now, as in Acts, and as in Psalm 67, it reads,

  96. May your ways and salvation be known among nations.

  97. May all nations praise you.

  98. Now, this week, as Chris just mentioned, we will continue in talking about missions,

  99. and you get two for the price of one.

  100. I guess there's a lot of bargains out there during the COVID virus, and you get one today.

  101. Now, the Great Commission is a sermon passage that I think a lot of us are very familiar with,

  102. probably heard a lot.

  103. And for me, personally, as the sinner that I am, when I reflect on the Great Commission,

  104. what I think of in my mind is my highlight reel of Ed's greatest evangelistic moments.

  105. Top five, top ten.

  106. Was it the time that I got to minister to my colleague at work because he started dating a Christian girl?

  107. Or was it the time that I brought my long-term high school friend, who I haven't met in a long time,

  108. after a casual steak dinner and invited him to pray the repentance prayer, and he did.

  109. At other times, I approached the Great Commission with this laissez-faire approach.

  110. It's like, I treat it as, Great Commission is great, but it's for those who are called to the mission fields.

  111. Someone like Amelia.

  112. Amelia was called to minister to the Hakka people of Taiwan, so she dropped her things, decided to drop her life in Hong Kong,

  113. moved to Taiwan, started learning Chinese for the past two or three years, and she's following that mission.

  114. Great Commission is for her.

  115. You know, people in the foreign mission fields, not for me.

  116. But in both of these responses, whether I act as a performance Christian or a licensed Christian,

  117. those, my heart is in the wrong place.

  118. And today, we're going to be talking about what the Great Commission is really about.

  119. Jesus.

  120. It's all about Jesus.

  121. In fact, the Great Commission begins because of Jesus, is a response to Jesus, and is sustained by the Spirit of Jesus.

  122. When we read the passage of the Great Commission, it's very easy to focus on,

  123. go and make disciples of all nations.

  124. Because that's kind of probably the most famous phrase.

  125. But, there is a radical claim that Jesus makes right before that,

  126. that I would argue is probably even more important.

  127. Because Jesus says,

  128. all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  129. That is, when the resurrected Jesus makes the claim,

  130. Jesus is claiming in no uncertain terms that his status is that of equal to God.

  131. One who rules over kingdoms is Lord of Lords and King of Kings.

  132. I think we're just working.

  133. There's some slides in the background that could pop up.

  134. Now, to the Jewish people, the Gospel of Matthew was written for the Jewish people.

  135. To the Jewish people, this would have been a radical, radical claim.

  136. Very eye-popping.

  137. Because to the Jewish people, there's only two authority.

  138. There's Torah, the Word of God, and Yahweh, God himself.

  139. And so, when Jesus makes this claim and challenges the authority and worship of the Jewish,

  140. the paradigm of authority and worship,

  141. Jesus is making a very bold claim.

  142. And that's really the key point to the Gospel of Matthew.

  143. That Jesus is Emmanuel, the fulfillment of the Messiah that is,

  144. the promised Messiah of the Old Testament.

  145. In fact, in Matthew chapter 1, Matthew begins with tracing the lineage of Jesus to Abraham.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  146. And as we learned last week, from Genesis 22, 18, it says,

  147. through your offspring, this is God speaking to Abraham,

  148. through your offspring, all nations would be blessed.

  149. Every Jewish reader would know that the implied implication of that is that Jesus is the Messiah.

  150. Twelve times Matthew mentions that Jesus is the fulfillment of this prophecy and that prophecy.

  151. And at the bookend of the Matthew of Jesus, it said,

  152. Jesus, what does Jesus say?

  153. Go and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  154. Equality, but distinct.

  155. Distinct, but equal.

  156. The point is this.

  157. It was always God's plan to bring salvation to this world.

  158. And Jesus is the fulfillment of that.

  159. Jesus is God's promised salvation to mankind.

  160. Without Jesus, there is no Great Commission,

  161. because there would be no path to salvation.

  162. There is no way back to be with our Heavenly Father who is holy and righteous.

  163. The Great Commission is a movement that begins because of Jesus,

  164. because of who He is and what He has done.

  165. Now, in the passage, the disciples are traveling to Galilee,

  166. and they encounter Jesus, and they worship Him.

  167. And that's a natural response for seeing a resurrected Messiah.

  168. You just saw this guy die maybe like, you know, a couple weeks ago,

  169. and here there he is, the resurrected Messiah standing there.

  170. And of course, you're going to worship Him.

  171. And then Jesus goes and commissions them and says,

  172. go and make disciples.

  173. Now, why is this sequence of events important?

  174. The disciples first encounter, then the disciples worship,

  175. and then the disciples get commissioned.

  176. This is important because missions always starts with an encounter and worship of our Lord.

  177. You have to be changed by the gospel to want to share the gospel.

  178. You know, I believe everyone, I believe,

  179. has a thing that they like to share with their friends or family.

  180. You know, it could be your favorite book, your favorite restaurant.

  181. I think most topical these days is we want to share the most latest COVID news, right?

  182. Where to go to get toilet paper, where to go to get masks,

  183. where not to go because there's infected people.

  184. Well, my thing is sharing good deals.

  185. I love to scour the, if you know me, you know me.

  186. I love to scour the internet for good deals,

  187. mostly with regards to good places to take Trish to a discounted date night dinner,

  188. good places for a staycation, best value,

  189. or also best ways to accumulate Asian miles for free flights.

  190. Now, I love to share this with my friends.

  191. Why?

  192. Because these are good things.

  193. I mean, these are good experiences and good deals,

  194. and I want to share good things with my friends.

  195. And in the similar way, the motivation of missions comes from the worship of our Lord.

  196. Mission begins with an encounter with Jesus that changes you.

  197. Unless you encounter Jesus and see that he is a treasure above all earthly treasures,

  198. you wouldn't naturally look to make disciples.

  199. But where this analogy totally ends is that, you know,

  200. Jesus is not merely a good thing.

  201. Jesus is life-giving.

  202. And so, if I'm so willing to share about good things and good experiences with my friends,

  203. sometimes I always ask myself,

  204. why am I not more bold in sharing about Jesus,

  205. who gives life and is infinitely more valuable?

  206. Now, the most integral part of this passage is make disciples.

  207. Like, this is a really important instruction that you read in this passage.

  208. And as such, it is imperative that we understand what discipleship looks like.

  209. Now, discipleship, as it was meant in this, written in this text,

  210. is defined in the context of the Jewish religion.

  211. If a rabbi agreed to be a disciple of a younger boy and a man,

  212. that disciple will agree to submit to the authority of the rabbi

  213. in all areas of his life with regards to the interpretation of scripture for all of his life.

  214. That's a very, very high bar for devotion.

  215. The rabbi-disciple relationship is deep, is relational, and transparent.

  216. The disciple would observe how the rabbi deals with things,

  217. matters of the family, with marriage, with money,

  218. and he would choose, he would seek to copy him, to emulate him.

  219. And that's the role of the disciple.

  220. And there's a story once told that a disciple so wanted to learn from the rabbi

  221. that he hid in the rabbi's bedroom

  222. so that he can learn from the rabbi how to be intimate with his future wife.

  223. So that's how close there is.

  224. It's total devotion, and there's total transparency, and it's very deep.

  225. When we translate this rabbi-disciple relationship to what it means to be a disciple of Jesus,

  226. it means that as a disciple of Jesus, we are to fully surrender to him

  227. and take Jesus and his teachings as our only and ultimate authority.

  228. Our love for Jesus versus the things of this world must be like in Luke 14, 26,

  229. which says,

  230. If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters,

  231. yes, even their own life, such a person cannot be my disciple.

  232. That is, on a relative basis,

  233. versus our love for even the most dearest things to us in this world,

  234. we must love Jesus infinitely more, many folds more.

  235. A disciple then, therefore, if we read into all this context,

  236. would naturally take on the mission and the purpose of Jesus.

  237. As in the parable of the lost sheep,

  238. where the good shepherd leaves the 99 sheep to seek that one sheep.

  239. That is the heart of Jesus.

  240. Jesus' heart is for that lost sheep.

  241. His heart is so that he knows that everyone is so valuable

  242. that he will go to the ends of the earth to go after every one lost sheep.

  243. And if to be the disciple of Jesus means to take Jesus as the only authority

  244. and ultimate authority,

  245. and if Jesus' heart was about lost sheep,

  246. then as disciples, we have to be about lost sheep as well.

  247. To be the people of God is to be the mission of God.

  248. And I think you heard that from Kevin yesterday.

  249. But this is the key point.

  250. You cannot be a true disciple of Jesus

  251. and not be seeking to make disciples.

  252. And I just repeat that because this really spoke to me.

  253. Because being a disciple of Jesus,

  254. this sermon really helped me define what my walk with Jesus should really be like.

  255. You cannot be a true disciple of Jesus

  256. and not be seeking to make disciples.

  257. Because that is his heart.

  258. Now, making disciples, that's a daunting task.

  259. I mean, that's a daunting task.

  260. And I think in our culture, you know, our DIY, do-it-yourself culture,

  261. we, you know, we just think about, let's pull up our bootstraps

  262. and let's just go out there.

  263. Let's follow a formulaic plan.

  264. You know, five steps to evangelize in the workplace,

  265. ten steps to make a disciple, and let's go.

  266. But the reality is, the Great Commission is not a movement that belongs to us.

  267. It's God's movement.

  268. And so making a disciple means changing the hearts of an individual.

  269. And how can man, how can we change the hearts and affection of another person?

  270. That is impossible.

  271. Heart change is the work of the Holy Spirit.

  272. And so this impossible task is only possible with the help of Jesus,

  273. the Spirit of Jesus.

  274. The Holy Spirit is so important that in the movement,

  275. that in Acts 1-4, it says,

  276. Do not leave Jerusalem.

  277. Jesus says to his disciples,

  278. Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised,

  279. which you have heard me speak about.

  280. And in the same vein, Jesus reassures his disciples in verse 20,

  281. Surely I am with you always to the very end of age.

  282. And now he instructs them to go.

  283. Go to all nations.

  284. Now remember in verse 17,

  285. when the disciples encountered Jesus,

  286. it says,

  287. They worshipped him, but some still doubted.

  288. Well, Jesus' disciples weren't the crackerjack, hot shots, faithful men

  289. that we all put them out to be.

  290. They were actually still very much sinners.

  291. And they still struggled to trust in Jesus.

  292. But yet, Jesus still entrusts his mission to them.

  293. The thing that is going to make you successful is not how well you speak,

  294. or how well you argue.

  295. It's that Jesus is with you.

  296. And practically speaking, that means we need less of us and more of him.

  297. It means that we pray for heart change more than try to change hearts.

  298. It means that we are bold in impossible situations,

  299. because it's not about us.

  300. And it means that we can be bold in missions,

  301. because nothing is impossible with him.

  302. This is God's movement, and not our movement.

  303. And I think John 15, 5 summarizes best.

  304. I am the vine, you are the branches.

  305. If you remain in me, and I in you,

  306. you will bear much fruit.

  307. Apart from me, you can do nothing.

  308. So when I reflect back at how I respond to the Great Commission,

  309. whether it be Ed Choi's greatest evangelistic highlight reel,

  310. or passing the buck to missionaries like Amelia,

  311. I am led to repentance.

  312. I repent that I fall short of being a true disciple of Jesus,

  313. where someone who takes Jesus as my only authority,

  314. and ultimate authority in my life.

  315. How many voices do I have

  316. commenting to me on this and that,

  317. about how to live life?

  318. And how many times do I listen to those voices instead of Jesus?

  319. I repent that there still exists a large gap

  320. between my heart and the heart of Jesus,

  321. especially with regards to lost sheep.

  322. And I repent that oftentimes I choose to glorify myself

  323. than to bear the cost of missions.

  324. I want to invite Chris now to share about 1 Peter

  325. and the cost of missions.

  326. Great. Thanks, Ed.

  327. That was really helpful.

  328. So I want to just really follow on from what Ed was talking about

  329. and having a look at the 1 Peter passage,

  330. which is written about 30 years or so after the Great Commission.

  331. And you're getting to see where this Great Commission flows out in practice

  332. in people's lives.

  333. Because many of us,

  334. if you're a Christian and you've been in church for a while,

  335. you know that we're supposed to share the gospel

  336. and be bringing Jesus' love to people.

  337. Most of us are not unaware of the information.

  338. But actually, most of us struggle in reality with that.

  339. And it's not because we don't know the information.

  340. It's because mission will always cost us.

  341. You see, it costs Jesus everything.

  342. His whole life.

  343. And if we are following as his disciples,

  344. it's also going to cost us too.

  345. You know, I read a story of a family in the U.S.

  346. who befriended this guy in their neighborhood

  347. who is a very private, kind of lonely, reclusive kind of guy.

  348. And their relationship started off

  349. as they just got to walk their dog with him.

  350. And they built up a friendship.

  351. And eventually, they invited him into their home.

  352. And they were beginning to share the gospel.

  353. He was hanging out with their family.

  354. And then one day, they woke up to see over in his house,

  355. the police had cordoned off the whole of his house.

  356. And they were bringing out drug-making equipment

  357. from his property.

  358. And they discovered that he'd actually been making crystal meth

  359. and producing it in his basement.

  360. And then all the neighbors around them,

  361. suddenly, because this family had associated with him,

  362. they began to start, like, rumors started going around.

  363. Everyone started kind of backing off and backing away from,

  364. like, are you involved?

  365. Like, how could you do this?

  366. How could you encourage this in our neighborhood?

  367. And people, they would walk down the street,

  368. and people would just walk the other way from them.

  369. Because they had associated with this guy.

  370. And their reputation became linked to this guy's reputation.

  371. Now, when we are following Jesus as God,

  372. as the Lord of our life,

  373. Jesus isn't a drug dealer.

  374. He's not actually even just a nice teacher.

  375. If you really see who Jesus actually is,

  376. for many people,

  377. he's really somebody who's actually quite weird and dangerous.

  378. If you really see what he's actually saying in our lives.

  379. You see, in Peter's day,

  380. who's writing this,

  381. no one had a problem with worshiping Jesus.

  382. They had a problem with worshiping only Jesus.

  383. Because that was too exclusive.

  384. Because the pagans around them,

  385. all their gods required worship.

  386. And if you weren't worshiping them,

  387. then you could bring the anger of the gods on your community.

  388. And that was going to be dangerous for you.

  389. And so Christians at that time,

  390. were treated either indifferently,

  391. or they were mocked,

  392. or just treated as a threat.

  393. You know, when I was in the UK,

  394. actually, there was Franklin Graham,

  395. who was the son of Billy Graham,

  396. was actually coming to just,

  397. do some sharing of the gospel with people.

  398. But he was banned from speaking,

  399. because of some of his views on gay marriage.

  400. And there was actually,

  401. when I was there in the city,

  402. there was a massive campaign against him.

  403. Because people think that Christians,

  404. and some of their beliefs,

  405. it's not just old-fashioned any longer.

  406. It's even dangerous.

  407. And isn't that what we fear?

  408. We fear a sense of social rejection by people.

  409. Don't we?

  410. That was the situation for them.

  411. And Peter here,

  412. he says this in the passage.

  413. He says,

  414. even if you should suffer for righteousness sake,

  415. you will be blessed.

  416. Don't have no fear of them,

  417. nor be troubled,

  418. but in your hearts,

  419. honor Christ the Lord as holy.

  420. You see, when Christ is Lord,

  421. it challenges our idols and our fears.

  422. Do you know that word,

  423. honor Christ as Lord?

  424. It's actually one word in Greek,

  425. which is sanctify Christ as Lord.

  426. That means set him apart as Lord.

  427. He is Lord.

  428. He has all authority.

  429. But actually,

  430. we can sing about Jesus as Lord,

  431. and we worship him on a Sunday,

  432. but actually we can go out in the rest of our weeks

  433. and worship somebody else as Lord

  434. or something else as Lord in our weeks.

  435. Because in our hearts,

  436. we fear other people more than we fear him.

  437. In our hearts,

  438. we want to please other people

  439. more than we want to please him.

  440. We fear awkward conversations

  441. more than we fear dishonoring him.

  442. And you know,

  443. the mission of God puts in crystal clear focus

  444. whether Jesus is not just Lord of our mouths,

  445. but is Lord of our hearts too,

  446. because it's uncomfortable.

  447. And I'm really challenged by this,

  448. but actually I think it's true

  449. that the only reason,

  450. the only reason that stops me

  451. from boldly proclaiming Jesus as Lord

  452. and shaping my life around his mission

  453. is because functionally,

  454. I'm making something else in my heart

  455. Lord and not him.

  456. I'm worshiping something else and not Jesus.

  457. Because if,

  458. like Ed was saying,

  459. if Jesus is filling my heart,

  460. he's got to overthrow flow

  461. in the way that I live my life

  462. and the words that I speak.

  463. You know,

  464. last week I was in a cafe

  465. and I got talking to the server

  466. behind the counter

  467. and we started having a great conversation.

  468. We were talking about,

  469. we talked about sin,

  470. we talked about death,

  471. we talked about church,

  472. and then I knew I needed to come on

  473. and talk about Jesus.

  474. And suddenly I was like,

  475. I felt weird.

  476. I was kind of,

  477. and Jesus,

  478. it's kind of mumbling.

  479. And I thought to myself,

  480. why do I do that?

  481. And I do that because,

  482. you know,

  483. you see that look?

  484. Here's a religious nut kind of look.

  485. You know that?

  486. Right?

  487. And I don't like awkward conversations

  488. and I don't like making other people

  489. feel awkward either.

  490. I'd like just life to be fairly smooth

  491. for you to like me.

  492. You know,

  493. you can have your faith,

  494. but I want nothing much

  495. to disturb my life.

  496. Anyone like me?

  497. One person at the back.

  498. Good.

  499. Everyone else is sorted.

  500. I'll just talk to you,

  501. Tiff.

  502. But I've got this friend in Shanghai

  503. and he's a lawyer.

  504. And at board meetings

  505. or client meetings,

  506. he would come in

  507. and he'd bring his Bible with him

  508. and put it straight on the table.

  509. And then people would look at it

  510. and go,

  511. what's that?

  512. And he'd go,

  513. well,

  514. just very briefly,

  515. he'd say,

  516. well,

  517. I'm a Christian

  518. and Jesus is the most important thing to me

  519. and I just want to rely on his words.

  520. That's risky,

  521. right?

  522. That's like,

  523. he could lose clients

  524. because of that.

  525. That's like somebody

  526. who's actually saying,

  527. Jesus is really Lord.

  528. Because for him,

  529. he knows

  530. that actually,

  531. even though someone thinks I'm weird,

  532. and actually,

  533. I can tell you,

  534. he's had so many conversations

  535. where people have then gone to him,

  536. huh,

  537. so what is it that you believe?

  538. And what Peter says is,

  539. be prepared to give a reason

  540. for the hope that you have.

  541. And because he's been living in a way

  542. where he's honoring Jesus as Lord,

  543. so it's actually enabled him

  544. to have opportunities

  545. to then go,

  546. and here's why I believe this.

  547. This is what Peter is talking about.

  548. But in mission,

  549. if Jesus is Lord,

  550. then my reputation isn't.

  551. And so we don't play it safe any longer.

  552. We're willing to put our reputations

  553. on the line.

  554. So,

  555. you know,

  556. Peter says here,

  557. have no fear.

  558. Have no fear.

  559. Have no fear.

  560. Why?

  561. Because I've got this.

  562. You can trust me.

  563. But actually,

  564. we often justify

  565. our idolatries,

  566. the things we put before God,

  567. with excuses.

  568. Some of the excuses we go,

  569. I'm not very good at arguments.

  570. Right?

  571. I'm not very smart.

  572. I always seem to kind of mess up conversations.

  573. Things always seem to go badly.

  574. Has anyone ever thought like that?

  575. But if Jesus is Lord,

  576. do you know what he says?

  577. He says,

  578. why are you relying on your ability?

  579. If I,

  580. as the great king

  581. of the whole universe,

  582. have entrusted you

  583. and you're representing

  584. with a message

  585. of the king

  586. whose love is so expansive

  587. and great

  588. that the universe

  589. cannot contain it,

  590. how on earth do you think

  591. that you can possibly

  592. adequately

  593. communicate that

  594. by yourself?

  595. That's actually arrogance.

  596. Why are you making

  597. all about you?

  598. Because he says,

  599. no,

  600. the gospel

  601. humbles us to go,

  602. Jesus doesn't choose

  603. adequate people.

  604. He chooses you

  605. if you're completely inadequate.

  606. In fact,

  607. if you think you're adequate,

  608. then you're going to

  609. screw it all up.

  610. He chooses people

  611. who fumble

  612. and are clumsy

  613. and, you know,

  614. just make mistakes

  615. and just,

  616. we're sinful.

  617. So that's why

  618. he gets the glory,

  619. which is what Ed was saying.

  620. That's why he says,

  621. when I am with you,

  622. he's the only one

  623. who can guarantee

  624. this mission will succeed.

  625. Isn't that encouraging?

  626. I'm encouraged.

  627. Maybe three of you are,

  628. but I...

  629. But the things,

  630. there's this great passage

  631. in Acts 4.

  632. I don't know if you've read it,

  633. the disciples

  634. come before

  635. the most powerful

  636. religious leaders

  637. of the time

  638. and they're grilling them

  639. about their faith in Jesus.

  640. These are the most

  641. intimidating intellectuals

  642. of the time.

  643. You know,

  644. we always have some people

  645. who are intimidators,

  646. right?

  647. These guys are intimidating

  648. and it says in Acts 4,

  649. they knew that

  650. the disciples

  651. were uneducated

  652. common people.

  653. Okay?

  654. Intellectuals,

  655. uneducated.

  656. They hadn't even got

  657. through grade three

  658. at school.

  659. But it says here,

  660. and I love this,

  661. this is beautiful,

  662. it says,

  663. and...

  664. But these religious leaders,

  665. they were astonished

  666. because they saw

  667. that these people

  668. had been with Jesus.

  669. That's our qualification

  670. for mission.

  671. Have we been with Jesus?

  672. Have you been with him?

  673. Have you experienced him?

  674. Let the fact

  675. that most other powerful people

  676. in the world

  677. only want to be with you

  678. if you've got something

  679. to offer them.

  680. But Jesus,

  681. who already has all power

  682. and you have nothing

  683. to offer him,

  684. wants to be with you.

  685. Today,

  686. tomorrow,

  687. every day this week

  688. in your family,

  689. in your workplace,

  690. wherever you are,

  691. he's going to be with you.

  692. And he's Lord.

  693. That's encouraging.

  694. So if Jesus is Lord,

  695. it strips and challenges

  696. our idols

  697. and our fears.

  698. Practically,

  699. if he's also Lord

  700. in your hearts,

  701. it means we're going

  702. to prepare

  703. for his mission.

  704. He says this,

  705. always being prepared

  706. to make a defense

  707. to anyone

  708. who asks you

  709. for a reason

  710. for the hope

  711. that is in you.

  712. Many of us go,

  713. but I don't know

  714. how to share.

  715. And Peter would go,

  716. have you prepared?

  717. Like,

  718. have you actually

  719. even thought about

  720. how to share

  721. the gospel with people?

  722. because,

  723. you know,

  724. if something's

  725. really important to you,

  726. you prepare for it.

  727. Right?

  728. Like,

  729. you've got a presentation,

  730. you're not just going to,

  731. like a really major presentation,

  732. you're not going to just go,

  733. I'm going to wing it today.

  734. No,

  735. but if the mission of God

  736. is that crucial

  737. to who we are

  738. and what Jesus calls us to be,

  739. then we're going to prepare for it.

  740. We're going to go,

  741. okay,

  742. in our CG's,

  743. like,

  744. if someone comes to you

  745. and says,

  746. why are you a Christian?

  747. Do you know how to answer that?

  748. If someone says to you,

  749. like,

  750. what's happened in your life?

  751. Are you able to just

  752. share your testimony

  753. in two minutes?

  754. I want to encourage

  755. every one of us

  756. in our community groups

  757. to actually take the time

  758. to just

  759. prepare.

  760. You know,

  761. my mom,

  762. whenever we'd have people

  763. around at our house,

  764. sometimes we had people

  765. who are not Christians,

  766. and at the end of the meal,

  767. they'd be leaving,

  768. and she'd just kind of go,

  769. oh,

  770. I've got a great book

  771. I'd love to hand to you.

  772. And I'd be going,

  773. God,

  774. that's just really awkward.

  775. But not because

  776. Jesus was Lord,

  777. more important than just

  778. whether it was awkward or not.

  779. And actually,

  780. for some of us,

  781. if you're looking for,

  782. like,

  783. resources to help you

  784. or to give,

  785. this is a great book.

  786. It's called

  787. Confronting Christianity

  788. by Rebecca Glocken.

  789. I highly recommend it.

  790. It's great for you

  791. to read,

  792. to prepare yourself.

  793. It's great to give

  794. to other people to read.

  795. I really encourage us

  796. to have some resources

  797. and tools

  798. just so that you can be ready

  799. and prepared.

  800. Is that clear?

  801. Yeah?

  802. Because if Jesus is Lord,

  803. it's going to strip us

  804. of our idols.

  805. It's going to help us

  806. to actually prepare.

  807. Last thing,

  808. if Jesus is Lord,

  809. it's going to help us

  810. to be courageously gentle.

  811. Peter says this.

  812. He says,

  813. you know,

  814. if you get into this conversation

  815. about Jesus

  816. with people

  817. who might be pushing back

  818. against you,

  819. do it with gentleness

  820. and respect.

  821. It's really interesting.

  822. You know,

  823. I don't know,

  824. I have many conversations

  825. with people

  826. who are atheists

  827. or call themselves agnostics.

  828. And often what happens

  829. in the conversation,

  830. it goes something like this.

  831. Christianity is stupid

  832. and unscientific.

  833. And I just go,

  834. atheism is stupid

  835. and irrational.

  836. And then we just kind of start

  837. attacking each other

  838. and trading blows.

  839. And then it just,

  840. the temperature goes up

  841. and afterwards,

  842. I never want to do that again.

  843. That is not gentleness,

  844. by the way.

  845. Because when you're attacked,

  846. we naturally want to feel

  847. like we want to attack back.

  848. But if we're disciples of Jesus,

  849. how does Jesus respond

  850. when he is attacked,

  851. what does he respond with?

  852. Grace, gentleness.

  853. It's not weak gentleness,

  854. it's courageous gentleness.

  855. Someone once said,

  856. gentleness is strength

  857. under control.

  858. I love that.

  859. Strength under control.

  860. Doesn't that typify

  861. Jesus on the cross?

  862. Strength under control.

  863. Everyone's throwing things at him.

  864. Strength under control.

  865. And if Jesus is Lord,

  866. we're secure because

  867. we're under his control.

  868. So whether someone laughs at me

  869. or, you know,

  870. I lose the argument.

  871. Sometimes you can win an argument

  872. and lose a person.

  873. Right?

  874. But actually he says here,

  875. the way that you bring Jesus

  876. to people is not just

  877. with your words,

  878. it's also how you respond

  879. to people.

  880. There are many people here

  881. that I know,

  882. you have said to me,

  883. I was just like obnoxious

  884. to every Christian

  885. that came to me

  886. for like a long time,

  887. but they were so patient

  888. with me

  889. and gentle with me

  890. that actually after a while

  891. God just did something

  892. in my heart

  893. and now I'm a believer.

  894. Anyone else

  895. seen that?

  896. What would it be

  897. if we have a community

  898. of courageously gentle people

  899. who know Jesus is Lord?

  900. And the thing is,

  901. sometimes we want to attack

  902. because we feel insecure

  903. and if we lose the argument

  904. we feel like we're defeated.

  905. But if Jesus is Lord,

  906. then I'm not a failure

  907. for trying to obey him

  908. because his verdict over me

  909. is more important

  910. than somebody else's verdict over me

  911. or what I think of me.

  912. And what he says is,

  913. if you're a Christian,

  914. you're his child.

  915. He delights in you.

  916. And do you know

  917. when you see a child

  918. learning to speak

  919. and they go like,

  920. da-da here

  921. or something,

  922. da-da here.

  923. The father doesn't go,

  924. you stupid child,

  925. get your grammar correct.

  926. He doesn't,

  927. he goes,

  928. yes,

  929. woohoo,

  930. he said da-da.

  931. That's how Jesus

  932. looks at us

  933. when we try and share

  934. the gospel with people.

  935. Not in a kind of like,

  936. and you know,

  937. it's fumbling,

  938. we're like,

  939. oh,

  940. I just should have said that.

  941. He's going,

  942. yes.

  943. Because he loves us

  944. as his children

  945. and he loves us

  946. to respond to him.

  947. And the thing is,

  948. if someone laughs at me

  949. or mocks me

  950. or rejects me,

  951. it's okay

  952. because Jesus is my savior

  953. and I have laughed at him.

  954. I have mocked at him

  955. with my life

  956. in so many ways

  957. and yet he's so patient with me.

  958. He's so gracious to me.

  959. He's so forgiving of me.

  960. And if that gets into my heart,

  961. it doesn't matter.

  962. And I need to hear this

  963. again and again,

  964. right?

  965. It doesn't matter

  966. because Christ is Lord

  967. and that gives me

  968. the courage

  969. and patience

  970. and gentleness

  971. to be able to respond

  972. in that way to others.

  973. I'm going to

  974. finish with two things.

  975. One is,

  976. I love Simon here.

  977. If you don't know Simon,

  978. you've got to get to know Simon.

  979. He's great.

  980. You know,

  981. ever since I've known Simon,

  982. I've known him for years.

  983. He's always been telling me

  984. about him trying to share

  985. the gospel with his brother.

  986. And quite often,

  987. over the last time,

  988. he's come back to me

  989. just feeling very discouraged.

  990. It's kind of like,

  991. it felt like talking to a brick rule.

  992. He thinks everyone

  993. who believes this is stupid.

  994. All that kind of stuff,

  995. right?

  996. For years.

  997. But Simon has just been

  998. trying to share the gospel.

  999. And recently,

  1000. I can't remember when,

  1001. but God's done a miracle

  1002. in your brother's life,

  1003. hasn't he?

1004. You can talk to him later.

  1005. But what he's done,

  1006. he said this,

1007. and Simon told me this

  1008. just on Tuesday.

  1009. He said,

  1010. his brother told him,

  1011. I think last week,

  1012. was it?

  1013. That actually,

  1014. you're the only person

1015. I know who would ever

  1016. keep on telling me

1017. this message for so long.

  1018. Now,

  1019. I don't think he was just

1020. beating him into the ground

  1021. into submission.

  1022. But there's something

  1023. that actually just

  1024. that persistent,

  1025. courageous,

  1026. gentleness,

  1027. but kindness,

  1028. just continually saying,

1029. I just want this person

1030. to come to know Jesus.

  1031. That is actually

  1032. what Jesus does.

  1033. And he said,

  1034. like,

  1035. he's gone from being

  1036. this worry-driven,

  1037. fret-filled man

  1038. to suddenly have

  1039. this lightness and joy

  1040. in his life.

  1041. That's what the gospel

  1042. does in people.

  1043. That's why we want

1044. to share it with people.

1045. And if Jesus is truly

  1046. Lord of our lives,

  1047. we can trust him.

  1048. We can trust him.

1049. So how do we respond?

  1050. How do we respond?

1051. I think the first response

  1052. we need to do

  1053. is to get real.

  1054. Our problem with mission

  1055. and sharing the gospel

1056. is not a lack of skill.

  1057. It's a problem

  1058. of our priorities.

  1059. And we just need

1060. to be honest about that.

  1061. We need to remove

1062. any excuses that we have

1063. and just come before God

1064. and just repent before him

  1065. and say,

  1066. God,

  1067. I've placed so many

  1068. other things before you.

  1069. I get distracted

1070. by so many other things.

  1071. I fear other people

1072. more than I fear you.

  1073. change my heart.

1074. We repent of making it

  1075. about ourselves,

  1076. about our performance.

  1077. And we start praying.

  1078. You know,

  1079. what would it be

  1080. if 150,

  1081. 100,

  1082. 150 people

  1083. in Watermark,

  1084. and this is something

  1085. I'm just really praying,

1086. that we get on our knees

  1087. and ask God

1088. to do such a work

  1089. in our heart

  1090. that his spirit

  1091. takes us

  1092. from being chickens,

  1093. cowards

  1094. who just,

  1095. we kind of,

  1096. you know,

1097. we like fumble over Jesus.

  1098. He takes us

  1099. from chickens

  1100. to lions.

  1101. He takes us

  1102. from cowards

  1103. to courageous

  1104. gospel warriors

  1105. for him

  1106. who are willing

1107. to put in the work

  1108. to prepare

  1109. for the mission

1110. that he's called us to,

  1111. knowing that

  1112. we are inadequate,

  1113. completely inadequate.

  1114. But if we're

  1115. an adequate people

  1116. who are Jesus-loving,

  1117. spirit-filled,

  1118. humble,

  1119. gentle,

  1120. yet irresistibly fearless,

  1121. because we know

  1122. that Jesus is Lord,

  1123. and he's Lord

1124. not just in our mouths,

  1125. but he's Lord

  1126. in our hearts,

  1127. and we know

  1128. that he loves us,

  1129. then I think

  1130. from this week,

  1131. Satan is going

  1132. to be trembling

  1133. in his boots.

  1134. As we launch out

  1135. from here

  1136. for the rest

  1137. of this week,

  1138. every day,

  1139. every morning,

  1140. why don't you

  1141. start by saying,

1142. today I'm not my own.

  1143. I'm yours.

  1144. Spirit,

  1145. would you just

  1146. lead me today?

  1147. Give me that courage

  1148. to put you

1149. as Lord in my life.

  1150. And I think

1151. he's going to do something,

  1152. because God loves

  1153. answering prayers

  1154. like that.

  1155. If you are not

  1156. a Christian,

  1157. Jesus is calling

  1158. you today,

  1159. because if he truly

  1160. is Lord,

  1161. that means anything

  1162. else in your life

  1163. is going to be

  1164. always lesser

  1165. than him,

  1166. and one day

  1167. you will come

  1168. before him,

  1169. and you'll have

  1170. to give an account

  1171. of your life.

  1172. And Jesus says

  1173. to you,

  1174. I have given

  1175. my entire life

  1176. to die for you

  1177. so that you

  1178. could come

  1179. to know me.

  1180. Now lay down

  1181. your own sense

  1182. of wanting

  1183. to live your life

  1184. your way.

  1185. and say,

  1186. Jesus,

  1187. I want to accept

  1188. the gift

  1189. of your salvation

  1190. to me.

  1191. And right now

  1192. to recognize

  1193. you're a sinner

  1194. who is in desperate

  1195. need of saving,

1196. but you have an amazing

  1197. Savior in Christ.

  1198. And come to him

  1199. today.

  1200. Come and see me.

  1201. Come and see one

  1202. of the other elders,

  1203. because we want

  1204. you to come

  1205. to know him.

  1206. So let me just

  1207. stop here.

1208. I want you to pray.

  1209. And I want you

  1210. just to get real

  1211. with God.

  1212. Let me just

  1213. stop and just

  1214. think,

  1215. where has my

  1216. heart been

  1217. as I think

  1218. about the

  1219. mission that

  1220. God has called

  1221. me to?

  1222. Is Jesus

  1223. really Lord

  1224. of my heart?

  1225. And let's just

  1226. do some business

  1227. with him.

  1228. Maybe the musicians

  1229. can come up.

  1230. Maybe the prayer

  1231. team can come up.

  1232. If you like prayer,

  1233. and you just know

  1234. actually,

  1235. this is an area

  1236. you just struggle

  1237. with.

  1238. Jesus is not

  1239. bringing condemnation

  1240. to you.

  1241. He's bringing

  1242. challenge to you,

  1243. but he wants you

  1244. to come and run

  1245. to him.

  1246. So come and

  1247. just spend some

  1248. time.

  1249. Get right with

  1250. God right now.

  1251. Pray that

  1252. before him.

  1253. Lord,

  1254. I'm not my own.

  1255. Help me to live

  1256. this week

  1257. not as my own,

  1258. but for the one

  1259. who died for me,

1260. gave his life for me,

  1261. so that I might

  1262. no longer live for

  1263. myself,

  1264. but him who loves

  1265. me outrageously.

1266. You might just want to ask yourself,

  1267. do I ever prepare?

1268. Or am I so wrapped up with fear

1269. that I don't see the people around me,

1270. so wrapped up with my circumstances,

1271. with the things I want to do,

1272. I want to get on and do,

  1273. but I don't think,

1274. well, God, what do you want me to do?

1275. Father, I pray for us as a church,

  1276. we desperately need you.

1277. I know in my own heart, Lord,

1278. so many other things compete with you

  1279. as Lord.

1280. I don't want that to be the case, Lord.

1281. Pray for us as a church

1282. that we would see that you are more beautiful

  1283. than anything else,

1284. and we may take gospel risks

1285. because of the fact that we're utterly,

  1286. utterly secure in you.

1287. give us that courage this week

1288. not to play it safe any longer,

1289. but to really want to seek your face

1290. and love you with all of our being

1291. and that other people might come to know you.

  1292. in Jesus' name,

  1293. in Jesus' name,

  1294. Amen.
