  1. And then turning to the New Testament, we'll look there at John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  2. John's gospel, you know, John has the seven miraculous signs.

  3. He has the seven I am sayings.

  4. But John captures conversations that no other gospel writer captures.

  5. And one of these momentous conversations occurred at night

  6. and occurred between the religious man Nicodemus and Jesus.

  7. And you'll notice if you read through John's gospel that we read of Nicodemus three times.

  8. It's, again, quite unique for a peripheral character that we see a character like Nicodemus more than once.

  9. And we see the way in which God is at work.

  10. And maybe there's a point of connection here because you might be, it's night,

  11. you might be coming to find out a bit more about Jesus.

  12. You might be coming for any number of reasons.

  13. Nicodemus came to see Jesus at night and he got more than he expected.

  14. And my prayer is that we all get more than we expect tonight.

  15. John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  16. Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council.

  17. He came to Jesus at night and said,

  18. Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God.

  19. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you were doing if God were not with him.

  20. In reply, Jesus declared.

  21. Now actually what this says is Jesus answered him.

  22. And you'll notice in verse 2, there's no question.

  23. Nicodemus isn't asking a question.

  24. But Jesus is answering the unasked question.

  25. And each one of us has unasked questions.

  26. Each one of us has questions that have no easy answer.

  27. And Nicodemus, the religious man, is coming to the public figure Jesus at night.

  28. Not just to give him compliments, but because there's answers that he is looking for.

  29. Jesus answered, I tell you the truth.

  30. No one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.

  31. How can a man be born when he is old?

  32. Nicodemus asked.

  33. Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born.

  34. Jesus answered, I tell you the truth.

  35. No one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the spirit.

  36. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the spirit gives birth to spirit.

  37. You should not be surprised at my saying you must be born again.

  38. The wind blows wherever it pleases.

  39. You hear its sound.

  40. But you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.

  41. So it is with everyone born of the spirit.

  42. How can this be?

  43. Nicodemus asked.

  44. You are Israel's teacher, said Jesus, and do you not understand these things?

  45. I tell you the truth.

  46. We speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen.

  47. But still, you people do not accept our testimony.

  48. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe.

  49. How then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?

  50. No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven, the son of man.

  51. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the son of man must be lifted up,

  52. that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

  53. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him

  54. shall not perish but have eternal life.

  55. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

  56. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already,

  57. because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only son.

  58. This is the verdict.

  59. Light has come into the world.

  60. But men love darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

  61. Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

  62. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light,

  63. so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.

  64. Amen.

  65. And may God add his own blessing to this reading of his word.

  66. We're not going to sing again a portion of the Psalms.

  67. We're going to sing from Psalm 48b, and we'll sing from the beginning down to verse 9.

  68. Let's stand together to sing these words to God's praise.

  69. Great is the Lord, his praise all else excels.

  70. In our God's city, on his holy hill,

  71. Mount Zion is the joy of all the earth.

  72. So high and fair like mountains of the north.

  73. Here is the city where the great King dwells.

  74. God is the fortress of Jerusalem.

  75. When kings joined forces ready to advance,

  76. They looked and fled in terror and surprise,

  77. Gripped like a woman who in childbirth cries,

  78. Like ships destroyed by storm, you shattered them.

  79. As we have heard, now have we have seen it so,

  80. Within the city of Almighty God,

  81. The city of the Lord,

  82. Which by his grace,

  83. He makes secure within your holy place,

  84. Your never-failing love,

  85. We seek to know.

  86. Many years ago, it was helpfully explained to me that there's a significant contrast

  87. between Christianity and all other world religions or world philosophies.

  88. As a rule, most world religions suggest that the problems of life are primarily outside of ourselves,

  89. Whereas the solutions to life's problems are primarily within ourselves.

  90. Look deeply, look deeply, dig deep, look into yourself and you will find the way,

  91. And you will come to know the truth, and then you can live the life.

  92. However, Christianity is not one of those world religions.

  93. It's not one of those world philosophies,

  94. Because it has quite a different outlook.

  95. It says the problems are primarily in here.

  96. And the solution lies outside of myself.

  97. So if I want to look for the way,

  98. I'm not going to find it by looking in.

  99. If I want to find the truth,

  100. I'm not going to dig deep into my own heart or strive in my own mind.

  101. And if I'm looking to live the life that I'm intended to live,

  102. I do not have the ingredients for such a life within me.

  103. I must look outside of myself.

  104. And you see, that strand, that theme is seen throughout the whole of Scripture.

  105. That there is a profound problem that is within us.

  106. But that there is a solution that comes from outside of ourselves to us,

  107. in the person and in the work of Jesus Christ.

  108. So whether we read from Isaiah 45, or John 3, or Romans 8,

  109. which we'll turn to in a moment,

  110. this strand brings together the old and the new,

  111. brings together the law and the prophets.

  112. You see, we need help.

  113. We need guidance.

  114. We need wisdom.

  115. We need direction.

  116. But it must come from a different source.

  117. We can't figure out our own problems.

  118. We can't even understand the problems, let alone devise a solution.

  119. But if you turn with me to Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  120. we have in that first verse,

  121. a summary statement that captures something profound.

  122. Therefore, Romans 8, 1,

  123. there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  124. No condemnation.

  125. You see, sin, and by sin we mean doing those things you ought not to do.

  126. But I would suggest that sin, even more,

  127. is not doing the things that we ought to do.

  128. So it's not just the unkind words.

  129. It's not just the thoughts or the actions.

  130. But think of all the generous words that you should speak.

  131. Think of all the kind deeds that you should do.

  132. But you know what?

  133. We just don't have enough time.

  134. We just don't have the opportunity.

  135. And we just leave all those good things undone.

  136. Well, you bring those together,

  137. what we call the sins of commission, what you do,

  138. and the sins of omission, what you don't.

  139. You bring them together.

  140. And there's a verdict that is passed against humanity.

  141. Against the rich and the poor.

  142. Against the wise and the foolish.

  143. Against the east and the west.

  144. The north and the south.

  145. There is a universal verdict.

  146. And that verdict is condemnation.

  147. Now the Apostle Paul begins at chapter 8 by saying,

  148. there's now no condemnation.

  149. Well, something's happened.

  150. Because my heart condemns me.

  151. My mind condemns me.

  152. My life condemns me.

  153. If I am honest with myself,

  154. I am not the person I am meant to be.

  155. I am not the person I was made to be.

  156. And I'm certainly not the person

  157. that will satisfy the righteous requirements of a righteous God.

  158. So I want to notice a few things tonight with you.

  159. You see, we read from some monumental portions of God's word.

  160. Isaiah 45 is a chapter that's rich in a prediction of a worldwide gospel.

  161. Where the whole world is told,

  162. look, look to me and be saved.

  163. All the ends of the earth.

  164. For I am God and there is none else.

  165. And then there's an image of every knee bowing,

  166. every tongue confessing,

  167. that somehow, some way,

  168. there will be a proclamation to the world

  169. and there will be a message of salvation

  170. that is made available not just to one nation,

  171. not just to one people,

  172. but to all nations and to all peoples.

  173. And then you have that evening encounter with Nicodemus.

  174. He comes to Jesus looking for answers.

  175. But the answers that he gets,

  176. he could never have predicted.

  177. You must be born again.

  178. Something has gone wrong fundamentally

  179. and it must be transformed.

  180. But the transformation does not take place from us.

  181. The transformation takes place within us

  182. from God who now dwells in the hearts and lives of people.

  183. And the message to Nicodemus, again,

  184. was presented very clearly.

  185. It's a message of salvation, not condemnation.

  186. So you see, if you come tonight

  187. and you're searching or seeking or curious

  188. and you wonder what God's desire is for this world

  189. and for its people,

  190. Jesus sums up that very simply with the word of salvation.

  191. Jesus has not come to condemn,

  192. but he's come in order that the world might be saved.

  193. And the Apostle Paul here is drawing together

  194. in chapter 8 an argument,

  195. a profound argument to a clear conclusion.

  196. He says, therefore.

  197. Now, I'm not sure if it's Martin Lloyd-Jones or John Stopp,

  198. but one of these great 20th century preachers said this.

  199. Whenever you see the word therefore,

  200. always ask, what is it there for?

  201. 4.

  202. Now, the Apostle Paul is a logical reasoning argument.

  203. You know, he's creating a logical, reasonable argument.

  204. Now, it's not surprising.

  205. You might say, well, the beginning of chapter 8,

  206. he's obviously drawing together something from chapter 7.

  207. And you'd be right.

  208. Because Paul in chapter 7 is talking about a struggle.

  209. He says, you know what?

  210. The things I want to do, I don't do those.

  211. The things that I don't want to do,

  212. those are the things I do.

  213. You know, what a wretched person I am.

  214. What a struggle.

  215. I find myself conflicted in my heart,

  216. conflicted in my mind,

  217. conflicted in my life.

  218. Who will rescue me from this body of death?

  219. Thanks be to God,

  220. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  221. But you know, this chapter 8,

  222. I think is even bigger

  223. than a conclusion from chapter 7.

  224. Because I think what Paul is doing here

  225. is he's drawing together

  226. his argument

  227. that he began in chapter 1.

  228. At the very beginning of the letter,

  229. he said in chapter 1, verse 16,

  230. I am not ashamed

  231. of the gospel.

  232. Now, this is quite remarkable

  233. because the Apostle Paul is speaking

  234. to a people in Rome,

  235. the very center of the empire.

  236. And this group is small.

  237. This group is weak.

  238. This group is poor.

  239. This Christian community

  240. is not up to much.

  241. You see, it's fragile.

  242. It's fragmented.

  243. You just wonder,

  244. how is it possible

  245. that such a movement

  246. will ever have a second generation?

  247. So on one level,

  248. there's much to be ashamed about.

  249. But Paul says,

  250. I am not ashamed of the gospel

  251. because it is the power of God

  252. for the salvation

  253. of everyone who believes.

  254. You see, the power

  255. in the ancient world

  256. resided in Rome,

  257. resided with the emperor,

  258. resided with the army.

  259. But Paul says,

  260. no,

  261. the real power of God

  262. resides in a message

  263. concerning his son.

  264. How remarkable that is,

  265. that the power of God

  266. is now found

  267. in a person

  268. called Jesus,

  269. and that power

  270. is demonstrated

  271. in the life

  272. and the death

  273. and the resurrection

  274. and now the proclamation

  275. of Jesus.

  276. I am not ashamed

  277. of the gospel

  278. because it is the power

  279. of God

  280. for the salvation

  281. of everyone who believes.

  282. That's his proposition.

  283. He then goes on

  284. to demonstrate

  285. that all have sinned

  286. and fallen short,

  287. that there is a shared guilt

  288. and that there is

  289. a shared responsibility

  290. on our part.

  291. We don't do

  292. what we ought to do

  293. and we leave undone

  294. the things

  295. that we ought to do.

  296. So salvation

  297. is found in the gospel.

  298. So if that's his proposition

  299. and then he goes on

  300. to demonstrate

  301. the reality

  302. of the gospel

  303. and if you're wondering

  304. who is this gospel for,

  305. well, in chapter 1 he says,

  306. first for the Jew,

  307. then for the Gentile.

  308. That's another way

  309. of meaning everyone.

  310. So ethically,

  311. your nationality,

  312. so whatever your nationality is,

  313. you're in one of those

  314. two categories.

  315. You either have

  316. a Jewish heritage

  317. or a Gentile heritage.

  318. But if you're not sure

  319. that you're included,

  320. you can just flick a few pages

  321. to chapter 5

  322. because Paul describes

  323. the kind of people

  324. that Jesus has come to help.

  325. If you look at Romans 5

  326. at verse 6,

  327. he says,

  328. you see at just the right time

  329. when we were still powerless,

  330. Christ died for the ungodly.

  331. Very rarely will anyone

  332. die for a righteous man,

  333. though for a good man

  334. someone might possibly

  335. dare to die.

  336. But God demonstrates

  337. his own love for us

  338. in this.

  339. While we were still sinners,

  340. Christ died for us.

  341. There are three descriptors

  342. in this passage

  343. that sum up us,

  344. individually and collectively.

  345. We're described here

  346. as the powerless,

  347. we're described here

  348. as the ungodly,

  349. and we're described here

  350. as sinners.

  351. That characterizes you

  352. and me.

  353. It characterizes

  354. all of us in here.

  355. It characterizes

  356. all of them out there.

  357. We are not strong.

  358. We're weak.

  359. We are not godly.

  360. We are ungodly.

  361. And we are not sinless.

  362. We are sinful.

  363. And this is exactly

  364. the class and category

  365. of people

  366. that the gospel

  367. is intended for.

  368. You see,

  369. Jesus did not come

  370. into this world

  371. to make good people better.

  372. He came to find

  373. lost people.

  374. He came to give life

  375. to spiritually dead people.

  376. He came to give salvation

  377. to those whose category

  378. was otherwise

  379. only condemnation.

  380. So the Apostle Paul

  381. is drawing his conclusion

  382. to a clear end.

  383. There is therefore

  384. now no condemnation.

  385. But he's doing something as well.

  386. The second point

  387. I'd like to identify

  388. is that Paul

  389. is drawing a critical contrast.

  390. Now I used to teach English.

  391. And one way

  392. of building vocabulary

  393. if you're learning English

  394. as a second language

  395. or if you're learning

  396. another language

  397. one way of building

  398. your vocabulary

  399. is learning opposites.

  400. You learn tall

  401. and you learn short.

  402. You learn thin.

  403. You learn fat.

  404. You learn old.

  405. You learn young.

  406. The Apostle Paul

  407. is showing us

  408. that there are

  409. two clear opposites here.

  410. There's the word salvation

  411. condemnation

  412. and there's the word condemnation.

  413. And these two never meet.

  414. You are in one

  415. or the other.

  416. You are in the category

  417. of those who are saved

  418. or you are in the category

  419. of those who are condemned.

  420. And you see

  421. John 3.16

  422. that magnificent summary

  423. of the gospel

  424. for God so loved

  425. that he gave.

  426. He so loved this world

  427. that he gave his son.

  428. That whoever believes in him

  429. will not perish

  430. but have everlasting life.

  431. And if you didn't get it

  432. in chapter 3.16

  433. chapter 3.17

  434. goes on to say

  435. for God did not send

  436. his son into the world

  437. to condemn the world

  438. but in order that the world

  439. might be saved through him.

  440. So there you have the contrast.

  441. John is great at this

  442. because John tells us

  443. about light and darkness.

  444. He tells us about darkness

  445. which is ignorance.

  446. He tells us that darkness

  447. is evil

  448. and he tells us

  449. that darkness is confusion.

  450. By contrast

  451. he says light

  452. is knowledge

  453. and light

  454. is goodness

  455. and light

  456. is clarity.

  457. And he draws

  458. this contrast

  459. in chapter 3

  460. saying

  461. there's salvation

  462. and there's condemnation.

  463. So the apostle Paul

  464. begins the letter

  465. to the Romans

  466. saying

  467. I am not ashamed

  468. of the gospel

  469. because it is the power

  470. of God

  471. for the salvation

  472. of everyone

  473. who believes.

  474. And in chapter 8

  475. verse 1

  476. therefore

  477. there is now

  478. no condemnation

  479. for those

  480. who are in Christ Jesus.

  481. If salvation

  482. is found in Jesus

  483. the one thing

  484. that the follower

  485. of Jesus

  486. will never experience

  487. is condemnation

  488. is judgment.

  489. And this is a present reality.

  490. It's not just

  491. a future event

  492. because in John 3.18

  493. what do we read?

  494. Whoever believes

  495. in him

  496. is not condemned

  497. but whoever

  498. does not believe

  499. stands condemned

  500. already

  501. because they have

  502. not believed

  503. in the name

  504. of God's

  505. one and only

  506. son.

  507. So this evening

  508. there are two categories

  509. of people here.

  510. It's not the rich

  511. and the poor

  512. it's not the educated

  513. and the illiterate

  514. it's not the wise

  515. and the foolish

  516. the young or the old

  517. but the categories

  518. that we have here

  519. in the Bible

  520. are this.

  521. There are those

  522. who are saved

  523. and there are those

  524. who are condemned.

  525. Those who are saved

  526. are those

  527. who have come

  528. to know Jesus

  529. they've come

  530. to trust him.

  531. Those who are condemned

  532. are those

  533. who do not yet

  534. believe in the name

  535. of God's

  536. one and only son.

  537. At the end

  538. of his first letter

  539. John puts it this way

  540. he who has the son

  541. has life.

  542. He who does not

  543. have the son of God

  544. does not have life.

  545. So this is a matter

  546. of life

  547. or death

  548. a matter of salvation

  549. or condemnation.

  550. A significant character

  551. in the missionary movement

  552. in the 19th century

  553. was a man called

  554. A.B. Simpson

  555. he was an American guy

  556. he founded the

  557. Christian and Missionary Alliance

  558. it's not a large church

  559. in the west

  560. but if you go to

  561. south and central America

  562. the Christian and Missionary Alliance

  563. church is a large denomination

  564. and he summed up

  565. the gospel in this way

  566. he said

  567. the gospel tells

  568. rebellious men

  569. that God

  570. is reconciled

  571. that justice

  572. is satisfied

  573. that sin

  574. has been atoned for

  575. that the judgment

  576. of the guilty

  577. may be revoked

  578. the condemnation

  579. of the sinner

  580. cancelled

  581. the curse

  582. of the law

  583. blotted out

  584. the gates

  585. of hell

  586. closed

  587. the portals

  588. of heaven

  589. opened wide

  590. the power

  591. of sin

  592. subdued

  593. the guilty

  594. conscience

  595. healed

  596. the broken

  597. heart

  598. comforted

  599. and the sorrow

  600. and misery

  601. of the fall

  602. undone

  603. that's what we mean

  604. by the gospel

  605. that's what we mean

  606. by the message

  607. of Jesus

  608. so Paul says

  609. no condemnation

  610. but you might say

  611. but why does he need

  612. to emphasize that

  613. why does he need

  614. to stress that

  615. because I would suggest

  616. that there are voices

  617. that speak

  618. of condemnation

  619. you see the Christian

  620. has three graces

  621. we're told that

  622. our lives

  623. should be characterized

  624. by three things

  625. by faith

  626. by hope

  627. and by love

  628. but the Bible

  629. also tells us

  630. that we have

  631. three enemies

  632. the Bible tells us

  633. that we have

  634. the world

  635. and the flesh

  636. and the devil

  637. and each of these enemies

  638. has the capacity

  639. to condemn

  640. to accuse

  641. and to make us

  642. think

  643. that we are not

  644. saved

  645. but rather

  646. lost

  647. so the world

  648. the world that

  649. lives without Jesus

  650. the world that is going

  651. in a different direction

  652. the world that prioritizes

  653. different things

  654. we can be condemned

  655. by the world

  656. we can be condemned

  657. by ourselves

  658. by our conscience

  659. by our mind

  660. by our heart

  661. and we can be condemned

  662. by the devil

  663. the evil one

  664. I was reading

  665. Pilgrim's Progress

  666. and there was a remarkable

  667. scene in Pilgrim's Progress

  668. Apollyon

  669. the character

  670. that represents

  671. the devil

  672. and Christian

  673. you know

  674. the follower of Jesus

  675. they meet

  676. and Apollyon

  677. begins by condemning

  678. or accusing

  679. Christian

  680. and he says

  681. you have failed

  682. your prince

  683. many times

  684. how have I failed

  685. my prince

  686. and then Apollyon

  687. goes on to list

  688. all of the mistakes

  689. that Christian made

  690. and you know

  691. we could list

  692. all the mistakes

  693. that we made

  694. and there are many

  695. and what I love

  696. is Christian responds

  697. to Apollyon

  698. and says

  699. all that you have said

  700. is true

  701. and much more

  702. but my prince

  703. is a forgiving prince

  704. you see

  705. when the evil one

  706. accuses you

  707. respond by saying

  708. your accusation

  709. is insufficient

  710. I am much worse

  711. than you say

  712. I've done far worse

  713. than you accuse me of

  714. and that's exactly

  715. why I'm a Christian

  716. I'm not a Christian

  717. because I'm strong

  718. I'm a Christian

  719. because I'm powerless

  720. I'm not a Christian

  721. because I'm godly

  722. I'm a Christian

  723. because I'm ungodly

  724. I'm not a Christian

  725. because I'm sinless

  726. I'm a Christian

  727. because I'm a sinner

  728. the terms and conditions

  729. of Romans 5

  730. are a great response

  731. to the world

  732. the flesh

  733. and the devil

  734. we are not

  735. good people

  736. made better

  737. we are ungodly

  738. powerless sinners

  739. saved and set free

  740. transformed

  741. by the grace

  742. of God

  743. so we have a conclusion

  744. to Paul's argument

  745. we also have a contrast

  746. a contrast between

  747. salvation

  748. and condemnation

  749. they are completely

  750. opposite

  751. so if I am not ashamed

  752. of the gospel

  753. because of the power

  754. of God

  755. for the salvation

  756. of everyone who believes

  757. for the everyone

  758. who believes

  759. one thing that is

  760. never possible

  761. is that you or I

  762. would ever be condemned

  763. but I want to

  764. my final point

  765. is this

  766. is that this whole verse

  767. indeed this whole gospel

  768. hinges

  769. on a crucial

  770. connection

  771. this small word

  772. in

  773. for those who are

  774. in

  775. Christ Jesus

  776. you see

  777. it's not what you know

  778. now what you know

  779. is important

  780. there's a certain knowledge

  781. that's needed

  782. it's not what you know

  783. but it's who

  784. you know

  785. we've heard that

  786. haven't you

  787. that you know

  788. if you know somebody

  789. with power

  790. or with authority

  791. somebody that can

  792. make things happen

  793. well you see

  794. when we are

  795. believers in Jesus Christ

  796. we are now

  797. united to him

  798. we know him

  799. he knows us

  800. but even more than that

  801. we are united

  802. to him

  803. he is within us

  804. we are within him

  805. story was told

  806. in London

  807. in the end of the

  808. 19th century

  809. a regular visitor

  810. to the United Kingdom

  811. also to Edinburgh

  812. was D.L. Moody

  813. D.L. Moody

  814. was a physically

  815. large man

  816. he was from

  817. Massachusetts

  818. and he commenced

  819. a worldwide

  820. evangelism campaign

  821. he was educated

  822. in the fourth grade

  823. he was not well educated

  824. his pronunciation

  825. was unique

  826. and yet

  827. he felt

  828. called by God

  829. to bring the gospel

  830. to the world

  831. by the end

  832. of the 20th century

  833. 19th century

  834. he didn't succeed

  835. but he did

  836. succeed in preaching

  837. to 100 million

  838. people in person

  839. that's not

  840. not bad

  841. for someone

  842. with a 10 year old

  843. education

  844. but the scene

  845. was told

  846. in London

  847. a young boy

  848. made his journey

  849. across London

  850. to hear Moody

  851. preach

  852. he was poor

  853. he wasn't

  854. particularly well

  855. dressed

  856. he wasn't

  857. particularly clean

  858. and he came

  859. to the hall

  860. where Moody

  861. was preaching

  862. and the usher

  863. asked

  864. what are you

  865. doing here

  866. I've come to hear

  867. Mr. Moody

  868. preach

  869. not looking like

  870. that you don't

  871. and he was

  872. told to go

  873. away

  874. just then

  875. as the boy

  876. was sitting

  877. on the curb

  878. crying

  879. a carriage

  880. pulls up

  881. a large man

  882. steps out

  883. and says

  884. young man

  885. what's the

  886. problem

  887. I've come

  888. to hear

  889. Mr. Moody

  890. preach

  891. but they

  892. won't let

  893. me in

  894. he said

  895. put your

  896. hand in

  897. mine

  898. and let's

  899. see if I

  900. can help

  901. you

  902. something

  903. strange

  904. happened

  905. because the

  906. door that

  907. was shut

  908. a moment

  909. ago

  910. was now

  911. open

  912. the

  913. same

  914. ushers

  915. that had

  916. said

  917. go away

  918. now

  919. welcomed

  920. the

  921. large

  922. man

  923. and

  924. the

  925. small

  926. guest

  927. now of

  928. course

  929. the

  930. large

  931. man

  932. was

  933. Moody

  934. himself

  935. but you

  936. see

  937. so it

  938. doesn't

  939. matter

  940. what

  941. you

  942. know

  943. but it

  944. matters

  945. who

  946. you

  947. know

  948. closed

  949. doors

  950. become

  951. open

  952. when we

  953. know

  954. Jesus

  955. Christ

  956. the

  957. doors

  958. that

  959. were

  960. otherwise

  961. shut

  962. have

  963. now

  964. opened

  965. to

  966. us

  967. when

  968. we

  969. come

  970. to

  971. know

  972. Jesus

  973. Christ

  974. all

  975. the

  976. benefits

  977. and

  978. all

  979. the

  980. blessings

  981. that

  982. belong

  983. to

  984. all

  985. the

  986. people

  987. of

  988. God

  989. come

  990. to

  991. us

  992. Sinclair

  993. Ferguson

  994. who's

  995. a

  996. 21st

  997. century

  998. Bible

  999. teacher

  1000. put it

  1001. this

  1002. way

  1003. he said

  1004. remember

  1005. these

  1006. three

  1007. words

  1008. he said

  1009. remember

  1010. that there

  1011. are

  1012. benefits

  1013. for being

  1014. a

  1015. Christian

  1016. remember

  1017. that

  1018. these

  1019. benefits

  1020. belong

  1021. to

  1022. all

  1023. of

  1024. us

  1025. we

  1026. are

  1027. beneficiaries

  1028. but

  1029. he

  1030. said

  1031. never

  1032. lose

  1033. sight

  1034. of

  1035. the

  1036. benefactor

  1037. you

  1038. see

  1039. it's

  1040. quite

  1041. easy

  1042. to

  1043. focus

  1044. on

  1045. forgiveness

  1046. you

  1047. might

  1048. focus

  1049. on

  1050. grace

  1051. you

  1052. might

  1053. focus

  1054. on

  1055. justification

  1056. or

  1057. sanctification

  1058. or

  1059. regeneration

  1060. all these

  1061. big

  1062. theological

  1063. words

  1064. and

  1065. these

  1066. are

  1067. so

  1068. important

  1069. but

  1070. what

  1071. Ferguson

  1072. is

  1073. saying

  1074. is

  1075. always

  1076. focus

  1077. on

  1078. the

  1079. one

  1080. through

  1081. whom

  1082. all

  1083. of

  1084. these

  1085. benefits

  1086. flow

  1087. to

  1088. all

  1089. of

  1090. these

  1091. beneficiaries

  1092. never

  1093. lose

  1094. sight

  1095. of

  1096. Jesus

  1097. because

  1098. it's

  1099. our

  1100. connection

  1101. with

  1102. Jesus

  1103. that

  1104. brings

  1105. all

  1106. of

  1107. these

  1108. benefits

  1109. all

  1110. of

  1111. these

  1112. blessings

  1113. long

  1114. time

  1115. ago

  1116. in

  1117. Oxford

  1118. John

  1119. Owen

  1120. was

  1121. preaching

  1122. and he

  1123. said

  1124. this

  1125. he said

  1126. that our

  1127. union

  1128. with

  1129. Jesus

  1130. those

  1131. who

  1132. are

  1133. in

  1134. Christ

  1135. Jesus

  1136. is

  1137. the

  1138. cause

  1139. of

  1140. all

  1141. the

  1142. other

  1143. graces

  1144. that we

  1145. are made

  1146. partakers

  1147. of

  1148. they are

  1149. all

  1150. communicated

  1151. unto

  1152. us

  1153. by virtue

  1154. of our

  1155. union

  1156. with

  1157. Christ

  1158. hence

  1159. is

  1160. our

  1161. adoption

  1162. our

  1163. justification

  1164. our

  1165. sanctification

  1166. our

  1167. fruitfulness

  1168. our

  1169. perseverance

  1170. our

  1171. resurrection

  1172. our glory

  1173. when we

  1174. are united

  1175. to

  1176. Jesus

  1177. everything

  1178. that belongs

  1179. to him

  1180. flows

  1181. to us

  1182. everything

  1183. that he

  1184. earns

  1185. we

  1186. receive

  1187. every

  1188. benefit

  1189. every

  1190. merit

  1191. that he

  1192. achieves

  1193. that he

  1194. is worthy

  1195. of

  1196. flows

  1197. to

  1198. everyone

  1199. who is

  1200. connected

  1201. to him

  1202. no other

  1203. world

  1204. religion

  1205. no other

  1206. world

  1207. philosophy

  1208. presents

  1209. the message

  1210. in this

  1211. way

  1212. there's

  1213. no

  1214. solution

  1215. within

  1216. the

  1217. only

  1218. solution

  1219. that

  1220. we

  1221. have

  1222. to

  1223. life's

  1224. problems

  1225. comes

  1226. in

  1227. a

  1228. person

  1229. Jesus

  1230. his

  1231. life

  1232. his

  1233. death

  1234. his

  1235. resurrection

  1236. and

  1237. when we

  1238. come to

  1239. know

  1240. him

  1241. everything

  1242. that

  1243. he

  1244. deserves

  1245. is

  1246. ours

  1247. by

  1248. gift

  1249. he

  1250. we

  1251. are

  1252. united

  1253. to

  1254. him

  1255. so

  1256. there's

  1257. this

  1258. crucial

  1259. connection

  1260. that we

  1261. now

  1262. have

  1263. with

  1264. Jesus

  1265. so

  1266. we

  1267. have

  1268. Paul

  1269. drawing

  1270. his

  1271. argument

  1272. to a

  1273. conclusion

  1274. we

  1275. have

  1276. him

  1277. drawing

  1278. this

  1279. very

  1280. sharp

  1281. contrast

  1282. between

  1283. salvation

  1284. and

  1285. condemnation

  1286. if you

  1287. are

  1288. saved

  1289. one

  1290. thing

  1291. that

  1292. is

  1293. never

  1294. going

  1295. to

  1296. happen

  1297. is

  1298. that

  1299. you

  1300. will

  1301. be

  1302. lost

  1303. remember

  1304. the

  1305. language

  1306. of

  1307. John

  1308. 10

  1309. I

  1310. give

  1311. them

  1312. eternal

  1313. life

  1314. said

  1315. Jesus

  1316. and

  1317. no

  1318. one

  1319. can

  1320. snatch

  1321. them

  1322. out

  1323. of

  1324. my

  1325. hand

  1326. he

  1327. is

  1328. placing

  1329. his

  1330. reputation

  1331. on

  1332. his

  1333. ability

  1334. to

  1335. hold

  1336. on

  1337. to

  1338. his

  1339. people

  1340. sometimes

  1341. we

  1342. as

  1343. Christians

  1344. we

  1345. look at

  1346. our

  1347. lives

  1348. we

  1349. look at

  1350. our

  1351. faith

  1352. we

  1353. look at

  1354. our

  1355. commitment

  1356. to

  1357. God

  1358. and

  1359. it

  1360. seems

  1361. very

  1362. inconsistent

  1363. it

  1364. seems

  1365. very

  1366. weak

  1367. it

  1368. seems

  1369. very

  1370. fragile

  1371. it

  1372. seems

  1373. very

  1374. sometimes

  1375. it's

  1376. here

  1377. today

  1378. sometimes

  1379. it

  1380. appears

  1381. to be

  1382. gone

  1383. tomorrow

  1384. primarily

  1385. the

  1386. Bible

  1387. does

  1388. not

  1389. define

  1390. our

  1391. relationship

  1392. with

  1393. God

  1394. based

  1395. on the

  1396. strength

  1397. of our

  1398. commitment

  1399. to

  1400. him

  1401. that's

  1402. important

  1403. we

  1404. believe

  1405. we

  1406. trust

  1407. we

  1408. rely

  1409. upon

  1410. him

  1411. that's

  1412. important

  1413. but

  1414. primarily

  1415. the

  1416. foundation

  1417. of our

  1418. Christian

  1419. life

  1420. is based

  1421. on his

  1422. commitment

  1423. to us

  1424. his

  1425. promise

  1426. his

  1427. perseverance

  1428. his

  1429. victory

  1430. his

  1431. success

  1432. so

  1433. what do

  1434. we do

  1435. with this

  1436. what does

  1437. a life

  1438. look like

  1439. if this

  1440. is true

  1441. for you

  1442. and if

  1443. you're

  1444. trusting

  1445. in Jesus

  1446. it is

  1447. true

  1448. for you

  1449. how

  1450. should

  1451. this

  1452. find

  1453. expression

  1454. I'm

  1455. going to

  1456. suggest

  1457. three

  1458. things

  1459. I'm

  1460. going to

  1461. suggest

  1462. first of

  1463. all

  1464. safety

  1465. you

  1466. and I

  1467. are safe

  1468. in the

  1469. hands

  1470. of Jesus

  1471. we are

  1472. safe

  1473. in him

  1474. there is

  1475. no more

  1476. secure

  1477. place

  1478. than to

  1479. be

  1480. in

  1481. Christ

  1482. Jesus

  1483. because

  1484. he

  1485. will

  1486. keep

  1487. us

  1488. he

  1489. will

  1490. hold

  1491. us

  1492. he

  1493. will

  1494. protect

  1495. us

  1496. second

  1497. word

  1498. I want

  1499. to

  1500. say

  1501. is

  1502. confidence

  1503. we

  1504. have

  1505. confidence

  1506. to

  1507. commend

  1508. this

  1509. Jesus

  1510. to

  1511. others

  1512. we

  1513. know

  1514. what

  1515. he

  1516. has

  1517. done

  1518. we

  1519. know

  1520. who

  1521. he

  1522. has

  1523. done

  1524. this

  1525. for

  1526. so

  1527. we

  1528. have

  1529. every

  1530. confidence

  1531. to

  1532. share

  1533. this

  1534. message

  1535. with

  1536. others

  1537. and we

  1538. have

  1539. every

  1540. confidence

  1541. to speak

  1542. and every

  1543. confidence

  1544. to serve

  1545. and third

  1546. and finally

  1547. is this

  1548. if there is

  1549. such a thing

  1550. as an

  1551. optimist

  1552. and I'm

  1553. not talking

  1554. about

  1555. temperament

  1556. I'm not

  1557. talking about

  1558. the glass

  1559. half empty

  1560. person

  1561. or the glass

  1562. half full

  1563. person

  1564. but if

  1565. there's

  1566. ever such

  1567. a thing

  1568. as an

  1569. optimist

  1570. surely

  1571. the

  1572. Christian

  1573. should be

  1574. an optimist

  1575. you see

  1576. we are

  1577. filled

  1578. with hope

  1579. not to

  1580. spare

  1581. our

  1582. lives

  1583. are filled

  1584. now

  1585. with joy

  1586. with peace

  1587. with comfort

  1588. with meaning

  1589. with purpose

  1590. we are safe

  1591. we are secure

  1592. we are confident

  1593. in him

  1594. so we above

  1595. all people

  1596. should look

  1597. upon this

  1598. world

  1599. should look

  1600. upon this

  1601. city

  1602. should look

  1603. upon this

  1604. nation

  1605. with great

  1606. optimism

  1607. to see

  1608. what God

  1609. can do

  1610. to see

  1611. what God

  1612. has done

  1613. and to see

  1614. what God

  1615. is able

  1616. to do

  1617. in this

  1618. day

  1619. and in

  1620. this age

  1621. you see

  1622. he's not

  1623. the God

  1624. of the

  1625. past

  1626. only

  1627. he's the

  1628. God

  1629. of the

  1630. past

  1631. the present

  1632. and the

  1633. future

  1634. Jesus

  1635. Christ

  1636. is the

  1637. same

  1638. yesterday

  1639. today

  1640. and

  1641. forever

  1642. so as

  1643. you read

  1644. the pages

  1645. of scripture

  1646. you see

  1647. what God

  1648. has done

  1649. but when

  1650. you see

  1651. what God

  1652. has done

  1653. that should

  1654. give you

  1655. great hope

  1656. for what

  1657. God

  1658. is able

  1659. to do

  1660. today

  1661. what he's

  1662. able to

  1663. do

  1664. in your

  1665. family

  1666. what he's

  1667. able to

  1668. do

  1669. in your

  1670. community

  1671. what he's

  1672. able to

  1673. do

  1674. in this

  1675. city

  1676. what he's

  1677. able to

  1678. do

  1679. in the

  1680. country

  1681. of

  1682. Scotland

  1683. and to

  1684. the

  1685. ends

  1686. of

  1687. the

  1688. earth

  1689. you

  1690. might

  1691. not

  1692. believe

  1693. it

  1694. but the

  1695. 21st

  1696. century

  1697. is going

  1698. to be

  1699. the

  1700. greatest

  1701. century

  1702. of church

  1703. growth

  1704. ever

  1705. more

  1706. people

  1707. are coming

  1708. to know

  1709. Jesus

  1710. in this

  1711. century

  1712. than they

  1713. have

  1714. in

  1715. any

  1716. other

  1717. century

  1718. the

  1719. expansion

  1720. of the

  1721. Christian

  1722. church

  1723. throughout

  1724. the

  1725. world

  1726. is

  1727. remarkable

  1728. we

  1729. don't

  1730. see

  1731. it

  1732. here

  1733. to

  1734. the

  1735. same

  1736. extent

  1737. but

  1738. you

  1739. go

  1740. to

  1741. Africa

  1742. you

  1743. go

  1744. to

  1745. Asia

  1746. you

  1747. go

  1748. to

  1749. South

  1750. men

  1751. and

  1752. women

  1753. coming

  1754. to

  1755. faith

  1756. so

  1757. let's

  1758. be

  1759. let's

  1760. recognize

  1761. that we

  1762. are

  1763. safe

  1764. let us

  1765. be

  1766. confident

  1767. in the

  1768. gospel

  1769. and

  1770. let us

  1771. be

  1772. optimist

  1773. to

  1774. see

  1775. what

  1776. God

  1777. is

  1778. doing

  1779. what

  1780. God

  1781. has

  1782. done

  1783. and

  1784. what

  1785. God

  1786. is

  1787. able

  1788. to

  1789. do

  1790. in

  1791. us

  1792. what

  1793. God

  1794. is

  1795. able

  1796. to

  1797. do

  1798. through

  1799. us

  1800. because

  1801. there

  1802. is

  1803. now

  1804. no

  1805. condemnation

  1806. for

  1807. those

  1808. who

  1809. are

  1810. in

  1811. Christ

  1812. Jesus

  1813. let's

  1814. pray

  1815. Father

  1816. we

  1817. thank you

  1818. for

  1819. your

  1820. word

  1821. we

  1822. thank

  1823. you

  1824. for

  1825. its

  1826. truth

  1827. for

  1828. its

  1829. power

  1830. we

  1831. thank

  1832. you

  1833. that

  1834. the

  1835. gospel

  1836. indeed

  1837. is

  1838. good

  1839. news

  1840. the

  1841. gospel

  1842. is

  1843. the

  1844. good

  1845. news

  1846. of

  1847. salvation

  1848. that

  1849. is

  1850. found

  1851. in

  1852. Jesus

  1853. and

  1854. for

  1855. those

  1856. of

  1857. us

  1858. whose

  1859. faith

  1860. is

  1861. in

  1862. him

  1863. all

  1864. of

  1865. his

  1866. benefits

  1867. and

  1868. blessings

  1869. belong

  1870. to

  1871. all

  1872. of

  1873. his

  1874. people

  1875. help

  1876. us

  1877. Lord

  1878. to

  1879. recognize

  1880. that

  1881. in

  1882. him

  1883. we

  1884. are

  1885. safe

  1886. that

  1887. we

  1888. are

  1889. secure

  1890. help

  1891. us

  1892. to

  1893. realize

  1894. confidently

  1895. serve

  1896. him

  1897. that

  1898. we

  1899. can

  1900. make

  1901. him

  1902. known

  1903. through

  1904. word

  1905. and

  1906. through

  1907. deed

  1908. and

  1909. help

  1910. us

  1911. Lord

  1912. to

  1913. look

  1914. upon

  1915. this

  1916. world

  1917. with

  1918. optimism

  1919. help

  1920. us

  1921. not

  1922. to

  1923. see

  1924. a

  1925. day

  1926. of

  1927. small

  1928. things

  1929. but

  1930. help

  1931. us

  1932. to

  1933. see

  1934. a

  1935. harvest

  1936. field

  1937. that

  1938. is

  1939. ripe

  1940. and

  1941. let

  1942. us

  1943. pray

  1944. to

  1945. you

  1946. oh

  1947. God

  1948. the

  1949. Lord

  1950. of

  1951. the

  1952. harvest

  1953. to

  1954. send

  1955. forth

  1956. many

  1957. more

  1958. workers

  1959. into

  1960. this

  1961. harvest

  1962. field

  1963. so

  1964. that

  1965. more

  1966. churches

  1967. could

  1968. into

  1969. the

  1970. world

  1971. into

  1972. those

  1973. places

  1974. where

  1975. they

  1976. don't

  1977. know

  1978. anything

  1979. about

  1980. Jesus

  1981. Lord

  1982. we

  1983. come

  1984. to

  1985. you

  1986. you

  1987. are

  1988. the

  1989. Lord

  1990. of

  1991. the

  1992. harvest

  1993. help

  1994. us

  1995. to

  1996. see

  1997. things

  1998. as

  1999. you

  2000. see

  2001. them

  2002. and

  2003. help

  2004. us

  2005. to

  2006. pray

  2007. as

  2008. you

  2009. command

  2010. us

  2011. to

  2012. do

  2013. and

  2014. all

  2015. these

  2016. things

  2017. we

  2018. pray

  2019. in

  2020. that

  2021. precious

  2022. name

  2023. of

  2024. Jesus

  2025. through

  2026. whom

  2027. every

  2028. blessing

  2029. and

  2030. benefit

  2031. flows

  2032. to

  2033. every

  2034. one

  2035. of

  2036. his

  2037. people

  2038. we

  2039. pray

  2040. in

  2041. his

  2042. name

  2043. amen

  2044. we're

  2045. now

  2046. going

  2047. to

  2048. conclude

  2049. by

  2050. singing

  2051. the

  2052. Lord

  2053. is

  2054. my

  2055. salvation

  2056. let's

  2057. stand

  2058. together

  2059. to

  2060. sing

  2061. and

  2062. then

  2063. we

  2064. can

  2065. remain

  2066. standing

  2067. for

  2068. the

  2069. benediction
