  1. Father, we ask that, Father, we confess that we often don't think you want to give us things

  2. which are really important to us. Father, that's just a problem many of us have.

  3. So we ask, Father, that the Holy Spirit would do a gentle but very deep work on us this morning

  4. and help us to trust you and to believe you, Father. And we ask in particular

  5. that you would grow good hope within us, that you would grow a good hope

  6. that allows us to live well for the good of ourselves, the good of this community,

  7. the good of our families and our friends, and for your great glory and praise as the gospel is spread.

  8. So, Father, grow good hope in us this morning. This we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. So I've had an interesting or an odd type of week. I had two conversations about suicide this week.

  11. And that's not something which I normally have a conversation about.

  12. But this week I had several conversations about suicide.

  13. One, in one case, it was because it's coming up to the, like almost any day,

  14. it will be the one-year anniversary of a very shocking, for this person,

  15. a very shocking and gruesome suicide.

  16. The one-year anniversary of it.

  17. And in the other case, it was a person sharing, I can't remember now if it was two or three,

  18. but the person sharing with me how a very close family member

  19. has now had either two or three suicide attempts, serious suicide attempts.

  20. And it was just in each of those cases, just pure, I mean, some people would just say by chance,

  21. others would say by providence of God.

  22. A person who wasn't supposed to drop in, who had a key, dropped in and had a key.

  23. Like those types of weird situations.

  24. And if it hadn't been for that, the person would have successfully committed suicide.

  25. And so we had, you know, these conversations about it.

  26. And, you know, in both cases, you know, one of the people who'd committed suicide,

  27. I mean, it's always tragic, right?

  28. In fact, actually, in the one with the several attempts, the person who tried to do it is very wealthy.

  29. And in the other case, this is a person who was just brilliant.

  30. A doctor, you know, young, like all, from the outside, in both cases,

  31. you'd look as if you'd think that these people had everything going for them in their life.

  32. You might even wish that you could be like them.

  33. You might even be saying, my life sucks, I wish I could be like them,

  34. without knowing that one of them would then, as I said, coming up a year ago, commit suicide,

  35. very in a gruesome manner.

  36. And in both cases, as I'm talking in these cases,

  37. they shared how, especially with the person who talked through the person,

  38. I can't remember now if it was two or three suicide attempts,

  39. they just shared how an overwhelming darkness and hopelessness,

  40. overwhelming darkness and hopelessness,

  41. just descended upon them and settled upon them,

  42. and settled and settled and settled.

  43. And, I mean, hopeless doesn't begin to capture the darkness of the state that they were in.

  44. Believe it or not, the Bible text that we are going to look at today

  45. has an awful lot to say about hope

  46. and how to understand hope and God and hope

  47. and help anybody to think about hope better.

  48. So it'd be a great help for me if you would take your Bibles

  49. and turn in them to Ephesians 1, verses 15 to 23.

    Ephesians 1:15–23

  50. Ephesians 1, verses 15 to 23.

    Ephesians 1:15–23

  51. And we're going to look at this whole problem of what hope is.

  52. And here's the thing to begin with.

  53. Isn't it puzzling that we need hope to live?

  54. Isn't it puzzling that we need hope to live?

  55. Like, most of us might never have thought about it, but we do.

  56. Without hope, we want to die.

  57. But that's an interesting thing about us as human beings,

  58. that that would be so important about us.

  59. So let's see what the Bible says.

  60. And in this particular case, we'll have the text up on the screen as well

  61. for those who don't have your Bibles with you.

  62. And hopefully I'm doing this correctly.

  63. So this is how it begins.

  64. For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus

  65. and your love toward all the saints,

  66. I do not cease to give thanks for you,

  67. remembering you in my prayers.

  68. And we'll just sort of pause there for a second.

  69. What I should have mentioned before we started to read this

  70. is one of the things which is very puzzling,

  71. and if you go back on your own and read the whole letter to Ephesians,

  72. is that the man who's writing this is in jail.

  73. He's in jail.

  74. And in fact, it doesn't sound like he's in jail.

  75. I think as I shared last week,

  76. if I was in jail writing you folks a letter,

  77. it would begin probably,

  78. I'm so glad nobody's beat me up yet.

  79. Then the second thing might be,

  80. get me a better lawyer.

  81. The third one might be, pray like crazy or whatever.

  82. But when you read this letter,

  83. it doesn't sound like it's written by a guy who's in jail.

  84. And he's in jail in Rome.

  85. The letter is written around somewhere between the year 60 and 62.

  86. And he's writing a letter to a group of churches

  87. in a place called Ephesus,

  88. in what we now know of as Turkey,

  89. which was an important city in the Roman Empire at the time.

  90. And he writes like this.

  91. He actually spent three years,

  92. the writer of the letter,

  93. spent three years in Ephesus.

  94. He planted the church and the multiple churches.

  95. But he writes like this because he's been gone from them

  96. for several years,

  97. but he's heard that they're growing

  98. and they're doing really well.

  99. And so he's filled with thanks.

  100. Right?

  101. I do not cease to give thanks for you,

  102. remembering you in my prayers.

  103. I'm going to say one other thing.

  104. So here's a,

  105. okay,

  106. time out.

  107. Grammar geek moment.

  108. Time out.

  109. You know who you are.

  110. Okay?

  111. So this is for you.

  112. This,

  113. 15 to 23 in Greek,

  114. is one sentence.

  115. No modern editor would ever let you write this sentence today in English.

  116. But it's one long sentence.

  117. But in the original language,

  118. I'm breaking the verses up into six sections

  119. because,

  120. okay,

  121. grammar geek moment,

  122. in the original language,

  123. this would have been read out loud.

  124. Many people were illiterate,

  125. right?

  126. So this would have been a letter that was written in all of the different churches

  127. in Ephesus and the surrounding community.

  128. And,

  129. and one of the things that they taught you in the ancient world

  130. was how to read properly.

  131. And so,

  132. if you just,

  133. trust me on this,

  134. if you analyze it in the original letter,

  135. there's breathing spots

  136. because they were trained to be able to stand.

  137. I don't know how they stood,

  138. but they would have stood there in a proper way.

  139. They read a bit

  140. and then there'd be a,

  141. and then they'd speak and speak and speak

  142. and then be,

  143. they breathe.

  144. And so it's designed that way

  145. and that's how I've divided up the verses.

  146. It helps you to understand the units of meaning.

  147. Okay,

  148. Greek,

  149. geek,

  150. not Greek,

  151. geek moment over

  152. back to the rest of you

  153. who are not geek grammar nerds.

  154. Okay,

  155. so,

  156. so that's how it begins.

  157. He's very thankful

  158. and then he's thanking

  159. and remembering you in your prayers.

  160. And what does he say next?

  161. The next thing he says is this.

  162. And,

  163. this sounds a little bit innocuous,

  164. but he actually

  165. sort of enters into a very interesting riddle

  166. that we don't really think about that often.

  167. Look at what he says.

  168. That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  169. the Father of glory,

  170. may give you the spirit of wisdom

  171. and of revelation

  172. in the knowledge of him,

  173. having the eyes of your hearts enlightened.

  174. Now,

  175. that just looks like a pretty innocuous thing,

  176. but here's this interesting thing.

  177. Remember I said,

  178. why is it that we can't live without hope?

  179. Like,

  180. why is that?

  181. Well,

  182. here's this other thing.

  183. I am not a dog person.

  184. I married a dog person,

  185. so we have dogs.

  186. Louise loves dogs.

  187. She also loves birds and fish

  188. and all sorts of other things,

  189. so we live in a small zoo

  190. almost sometimes.

  191. But,

  192. we have this humongous

  193. German shepherd

  194. and a dog not quite as big

  195. that's a cross between

  196. a standard poodle

  197. and a sheep dog.

  198. The big dog is called Rocky

  199. and the smaller dog

  200. is called Wooly.

  201. But,

  202. here's the thing.

  203. I observe these dogs

  204. and dogs,

  205. you know,

  206. domesticated dogs,

  207. they're pretty high up

  208. in terms of animals.

  209. Dogs never hope.

  210. If you think about it for a second,

  211. dogs don't hope.

  212. not really.

  213. Like,

  214. Rocky's not hoping

  215. for Christmas.

  216. That's a bit too far for us.

  217. Rocky's not hoping

  218. for Halloween.

  219. So,

  220. I mean,

  221. I observe the dog.

  222. It's not as if

  223. they're just a lump.

  224. Louise,

  225. often on many days,

  226. she goes to one of our

  227. kids

  228. and she meets

  229. their kids,

  230. our grandkids,

  231. off the bus

  232. because,

  233. you know,

  234. Victoria can't be home

  235. in time for it

  236. and so Louise goes

  237. and meets the kids,

  238. some of our grandkids

  239. and,

  240. you know,

  241. brings them and looks at it

  242. and then when Louise

  243. comes home at quarter to six

  244. or six o'clock

  245. or something like that,

  246. as soon as she comes in,

  247. as soon as she pulls in,

  248. the dogs are very excited

  249. and because it's six o'clock

  250. at night,

  251. the dogs know that

  252. unless Louise

  253. desperately has to go

  254. to the bathroom,

  255. the very first thing

  256. Louise does

  257. will be to feed

  258. the dogs

  259. and they're really excited

  260. about that,

  261. let me tell you,

  262. they really jump up and down,

  263. it is a big,

  264. big moment.

  265. I think actually

  266. first she gives them a cookie,

  267. then what parents

  268. aren't supposed to do

  269. with your kids,

  270. you don't give them a cookie

  271. and then their dinner

  272. but it works with dogs,

  273. right?

  274. So,

  275. but I don't think

  276. they think all day,

  277. I wonder what type of cookie

  278. I'm going to have,

  279. I hope I get a good,

  280. like,

  281. dogs don't hope,

  282. so just think about it

  283. for a second,

  284. like,

  285. why is it that human beings hope?

  286. It's not obvious,

  287. like,

  288. if naturalistic evolution

  289. is true

  290. and we're just a result

  291. of cause and effect

  292. and the natural physical laws

  293. and processes,

  294. like,

  295. we're no more

  296. biologically adapted

  297. to live well than,

  298. well,

  299. in fact,

  300. they used to say,

  301. some of us are old enough,

  302. remember when the thing

  303. that used to be

  304. mutually assured destruction

  305. and the worry

  306. that there'd be nuclear bombs

  307. that would kill everything

  308. and the only things

  309. that would survive

  310. wouldn't be humans,

  311. it would be cockroaches,

  312. and they never hope,

  313. by the way,

  314. they're just bugs,

  315. right?

  316. So it doesn't really

  317. add any advantage,

  318. like,

  319. why do human beings hope?

  320. Why do we hope?

  321. And why is it that hope

  322. is so important to us

  323. that without hope

  324. we'd die?

  325. And in fact,

  326. it's even curious

  327. because from Eastern

  328. religion's point of view,

  329. if in the way,

  330. like,

  331. the CBC

  332. or the University of Ottawa

  333. would tell you

  334. about how you began,

  335. which is through

  336. blind chance,

  337. like,

  338. how does hope exist

  339. in such a world?

  340. Yet from the Eastern religions

  341. where there's either

  342. this constant cycle,

  343. but at the end of the day,

  344. all things that exist

  345. are a result

  346. of an ancient catastrophe

  347. where the divine unity

  348. somehow or another

  349. started to have separation

  350. and we're all trying

  351. to get back to it.

  352. But if it all began

  353. by a catastrophe,

  354. then why does hope exist?

  355. Huh?

  356. Like,

  357. why?

  358. Well,

  359. you,

  360. now go back

  361. and look at the text again

  362. because the text

  363. actually says

  364. we're just so familiar

  365. with it

  366. we don't realize

  367. that the text

  368. says something

  369. very,

  370. very significant.

  371. Look at it again.

  372. The last bit,

  373. having the eyes

  374. of your hearts

  375. enlightened.

  376. See,

  377. here's the thing.

  378. Human,

  379. the Bible teaches

  380. that human beings

  381. are deep

  382. and that we're

  383. not just bodies.

  384. there's something

  385. deeper about

  386. a human being.

  387. In the language

  388. of a heart,

  389. we not normally

  390. hear it

  391. and we think

  392. of emotions

  393. but in fact,

  394. the Bible here

  395. is not referring

  396. to the fact

  397. that human beings

  398. have emotions.

  399. Dogs have emotions.

  400. What it's referring

  401. to is the command center.

  402. So those of you

  403. who really like

  404. Star Trek,

  405. just picture

  406. where Captain Kirk

  407. sits

  408. and that's

  409. the biblical

  410. understanding

  411. of the heart.

  412. that there's

  413. something

  414. non-physical

  415. that makes

  416. us human

  417. that's

  418. obviously

  419. connected

  420. to our bodies.

  421. It's like

  422. having bodies

  423. isn't sort of

  424. an accident

  425. or just a chance.

  426. We were designed

  427. to be a body

  428. with a command center

  429. that's not purely

  430. physical.

  431. One being.

  432. And this command center,

  433. out of this command center,

  434. out of this thing

  435. which is the very center

  436. of who we are,

  437. which can't be explained

  438. purely by cause

  439. and effect

  440. or by genetics

  441. or biology

  442. or anything like that,

  443. out of that one command center,

  444. this is what's so unique

  445. about the Christian worldview

  446. because it fits with us.

  447. Out of this one command center

  448. comes the mind

  449. and thinking,

  450. comes the mind

  451. and imagination,

  452. comes the mind

  453. and memory.

  454. Out of it comes

  455. the ability

  456. to will,

  457. to choose.

  458. Out of it comes

  459. creativity.

  460. Out of it comes

  461. feelings

  462. and emotions

  463. and affections

  464. and longings

  465. and apprehension

  466. of beauty

  467. and glory.

  468. And out of this

  469. one spot,

  470. it's not as if there's a,

  471. it's not as if there's,

  472. over here is the,

  473. you know,

  474. the feeling part

  475. and over here

  476. is the willing part

  477. and over here

  478. is the thinking part.

  479. No,

  480. there's just one center

  481. of a human being

  482. and that's how God

  483. designed us.

  484. And it's because

  485. God designed us

  486. to be a body

  487. with a heart,

  488. with a command center

  489. that's not purely

  490. physical.

  491. It's because

  492. that God

  493. designed this.

  494. designed us

  495. in such a way

  496. not as a catastrophe,

  497. not as just

  498. mere chance,

  499. that we understand

  500. that the heart

  501. that out of us

  502. comes a natural

  503. desire to think.

  504. If we had a baby

  505. and it wasn't

  506. showing any sense

  507. of thinking,

  508. we would be worried.

  509. If we had a baby

  510. and it showed no sign

  511. of ever wanting

  512. to smile or cry,

  513. we would be worried.

  514. If we had a young child

  515. and it never had

  516. any imagination

  517. or creativity,

  518. we would be worried.

  519. If we had a child

  520. and it had no longings,

  521. we would be worried.

  522. And so in this

  523. little tiny thing,

  524. we don't realize

  525. that one moment,

  526. all of a sudden,

  527. with this one text,

  528. a whole different way

  529. of understanding

  530. human being

  531. is opened up to us.

  532. That human beings

  533. are deep

  534. and that out of

  535. the very center

  536. of who human beings

  537. are,

  538. we think,

  539. we reason,

  540. we remember,

  541. we imagine,

  542. we will,

  543. we feel,

  544. not out of different

  545. places,

  546. but out of one place.

  547. Even though,

  548. as fallen human beings,

  549. we recognize

  550. that those things

  551. can sometimes be at war.

  552. We think one thing

  553. and we emote,

  554. we feel emotions

  555. around another thing

  556. and we long

  557. for different things.

  558. But we understand

  559. that they're at war

  560. because God,

  561. you know,

  562. the Eastern religions

  563. are right,

  564. there is a catastrophe,

  565. but the catastrophe

  566. isn't what created us.

  567. The catastrophe came

  568. after God made

  569. a good creation

  570. and the catastrophe

  571. came when we,

  572. human beings,

  573. desire to be like

  574. gods ourselves.

  575. And in seeking

  576. to do that,

  577. we broke our connection

  578. with the true

  579. and living triune God

  580. and division

  581. and brokenness

  582. entered into our lives.

  583. And God made us

  584. to hope.

  585. If you think about it,

  586. go back and look again

  587. at the Genesis 1

  588. and Genesis 2.

  589. Why did God

  590. create human beings?

  591. He created us

  592. to be at home

  593. in this universe

  594. and he created us

  595. to tend the garden.

  596. He created us

  597. to be fruitful

  598. and multiply

  599. and have dominion

  600. over all of the earth.

  601. Now,

  602. true confessions,

  603. again,

  604. I am not a gardener.

  605. If you want your garden

  606. to die,

  607. ask me to be the gardener.

  608. If you want all the plants

  609. in your house to die,

  610. ask me to care for them.

  611. I have a black thumb,

  612. not a green thumb.

  613. But,

  614. here's what I understand

  615. about gardeners

  616. because my wife

  617. likes to garden

  618. and I know lots of gardeners.

  619. You know,

  620. you can't tend a garden

  621. without hope.

  622. Like right now,

  623. gardeners are just,

  624. you know,

  625. there's a sense

  626. that they're going to be

  627. winding everything up

  628. but even as they're

  629. winding everything up,

  630. as they start to bank things

  631. and cover things,

  632. it's also,

  633. the garden will flourish

  634. this coming spring.

  635. And over the winter,

  636. they'll buy seeds

  637. at the right time

  638. and they'll start

  639. to plant them

  640. and try to get them

  641. germinating

  642. inside their house

  643. and they'll think,

  644. I know them,

  645. they'll talk about,

  646. should we buy

  647. these types of plants

  648. or these types of tomatoes

  649. or these types of flowers?

  650. I'm thinking of

  651. extending this.

  652. I think we'll have

  653. less corn

  654. and rather than that,

  655. there will,

  656. right?

  657. It's hope.

  658. They think,

  659. they plan,

  660. they hope.

  661. God created us that way.

  662. That's why we can't live

  663. without hope.

  664. God created us.

  665. This text opens us up

  666. on this very,

  667. very,

  668. very profound riddle.

  669. But the text then goes on

  670. and does something else

  671. which is very,

  672. very,

  673. very interesting.

  674. Look again at what it says

  675. up there,

  676. right?

  677. It asks,

  678. it asks,

  679. that,

  680. I have to look at the right

  681. spot in my Bible,

  682. that may give you

  683. the spirit of wisdom

  684. and of revelation

  685. and knowledge of him,

  686. having the eyes of your hearts

  687. enlightened.

  688. It's very interesting

  689. that what he's praying for

  690. is that light

  691. will come into the center

  692. of the hour.

  693. Remember what suicide,

  694. suicide I described

  695. as this overwhelming darkness

  696. that comes to you.

  697. And Paul's prayer,

  698. his insight,

  699. is that we need to be praying

  700. into people

  701. that light

  702. comes into the very center

  703. of who they are.

  704. And then he asks

  705. for three very interesting

  706. connected things.

  707. Look at verses 18

  708. through the beginning

  709. of verse 19.

  710. And there's three things

  711. that he prays for,

  712. each begin with the word

  713. what.

  714. That you may know

  715. what is the hope

  716. to which he has called you.

  717. What are the riches

  718. of his glorious inheritance

  719. in the saints?

  720. And what is the immeasurable

  721. greatness of his power

  722. toward us who believe

  723. according to the working

  724. of his great might?

  725. Now, these things

  726. are like a Rubik's cube.

  727. It's not three completely

  728. separate things.

  729. It's three things

  730. which you get aligned

  731. just as you want to get

  732. the Rubik's cube

  733. to be aligned

  734. with all the colors

  735. in the right way.

  736. And they fit with each other

  737. and they communicate

  738. with each other.

  739. And it's not just

  740. pie in the sky.

  741. In fact,

  742. if you look at it,

  743. once again,

  744. it helps you to understand

  745. how we think about hope.

  746. I know a person.

  747. I haven't had very many

  748. conversations with this

  749. person for a while.

  750. It happens,

  751. but because of their past,

  752. because of the fact that

  753. they were rejected

  754. by their dad,

  755. they've been rejected

  756. by their family,

  757. they've had a hard time

  758. with bosses,

  759. this person's a really,

  760. really, really,

  761. really hard worker.

  762. A really hard worker.

  763. But it's other people

  764. who will take credit

  765. for the work.

  766. It's other people

  767. who get the promotions.

  768. And their entire past

  769. just seems to be

  770. one of rejection

  771. and failure.

  772. And so they have no hope

  773. for the present

  774. or for the future.

  775. And others,

  776. they look at something,

  777. maybe their future,

  778. they look at their finances,

  779. they look at their health,

  780. they see death coming

  781. and they have no hope

  782. for the future.

  783. I know of one person

  784. who wanted to get

  785. the doctors

  786. to administer drugs

  787. to them

  788. so they could die quickly

  789. because they couldn't

  790. look good anymore.

  791. They couldn't get

  792. their hair done

  793. and their makeup done.

  794. I'm not making this up.

  795. Could not get their hair done

  796. and their makeup done

  797. and wear good clothes

  798. because of their

  799. medical condition

  800. and they wanted to die.

  801. The future just looked

  802. bleak and bleak

  803. and bleak

  804. and the present,

  805. no power.

  806. Look at how this is structured.

  807. Just look at,

  808. listen to it again,

  809. that you may know

  810. what is the hope

  811. to which he has called you.

  812. So Paul wants Christians,

  813. he wants the people

  814. in Ephesus

  815. to have hope.

  816. And the first thing

  817. to remember about hope

  818. is that God called you.

  819. That's the past.

  820. Sorry, I guess for you

  821. I should point that way.

  822. That's the past.

  823. You know,

  824. the reason you're a Christian

  825. is that God called you first.

  826. You become a Christian

  827. not when you call out to God

  828. hoping he'll answer,

  829. but when you call out to God

  830. who has been already calling you.

  831. And you're to remember

  832. that God called you.

  833. And then he looks to the future

  834. and he says,

  835. what are the riches

  836. of his glorious inheritance

  837. in the saints?

  838. In other words,

  839. he's telling you

  840. to look forward to heaven.

  841. This is really,

  842. remember,

  843. Paul's in jail.

  844. And he said,

  845. you know,

  846. I want you to grow in hope.

  847. And one of the ways

  848. to grow in hope,

  849. one of the ways

  850. to have light

  851. come into your life

  852. is to reflect

  853. and remember

  854. that God called you

  855. to be his child.

  856. And one of the things

  857. to bring hope

  858. into your life

  859. is to remember

  860. and reflect upon the fact

  861. that even though

  862. from the world's point of view,

  863. you might not be

  864. the most successful person.

  865. And at some point in time,

  866. you who might have been

  867. very, very, very beautiful

  868. or very, very handsome

  869. or very, very important

  870. or very, very powerful

  871. if you live long enough,

  872. all of a sudden

  873. you become old

  874. and wrinkly

  875. and not as important

  876. and have no positions of power

  877. and the people look through you,

  878. not at you,

  879. past you,

  880. not at you,

  881. and all of that.

  882. But that's not the final word about you.

  883. The final word about you

  884. is that God,

  885. who has called you,

  886. is preparing for you

  887. these glorious,

  888. like,

  889. you are part of God's treasure

  890. that he will enjoy forever.

  891. You are to understand

  892. that in Christ,

  893. that is the final word about you.

  894. And then it's not just the past

  895. and it's not just the future.

  896. Look at the next what.

  897. The next what says,

  898. and what is the immeasurable greatness

  899. of his power toward us

  900. who believe

  901. according to the working

  902. of his great might?

  903. That that power of God

  904. hidden in a body

  905. that is frail

  906. and aging.

  907. That God's power

  908. is present

  909. and working in you.

  910. You see,

  911. that's the way,

  912. isn't that the way,

  913. but aren't those three things

  914. all really important

  915. in structure and hope

  916. that sometimes

  917. when you're trying

  918. to encourage somebody

  919. and hope you want them

  920. to think about the past

  921. in a different way

  922. or you want to say,

  923. well, you can't deal

  924. with the past

  925. but look at the future

  926. or look at the present.

  927. Just look at the casual wisdom

  928. and insight of the Bible

  929. as it talks about

  930. this particular thing.

  931. But some of you might say,

  932. well, George,

  933. it's all religious stuff

  934. but here's the thing

  935. which is even.

  936. Remember I said,

  937. why is it that hope

  938. is so important

  939. and without hope we die?

  940. Why is that?

  941. And we talk about the fact

  942. that, well,

  943. what if it is

  944. that there is something human

  945. that's not just cause

  946. and effect

  947. that makes us different

  948. than a dog,

  949. makes us different

  950. than a cockroach,

  951. makes us different

  952. than an animal,

  953. that there's something

  954. in fact that only

  955. only the fact

  956. that we were designed

  957. by a triune God

  958. for love and fellowship

  959. with him

  960. and for harmony

  961. with the creation

  962. and harmony

  963. with other human beings,

  964. only that can account

  965. for the reality

  966. of what a human being

  967. is like

  968. and within that

  969. hope makes some sense.

  970. But you see,

  971. there's something

  972. even deeper here

  973. is that hope,

  974. if it is to be real,

  975. real, true,

  976. deep, enduring hope

  977. has to be something

  978. beyond this world.

  979. Like, if we are something

  980. beyond just the physical,

  981. doesn't it make sense

  982. that what we should

  983. really hope for

  984. should be beyond

  985. what is just physical?

  986. But it goes even more,

  987. if you think about it

  988. for a second,

  989. just like think about it

  990. for a second.

  991. One of the things

  992. that's really neat

  993. about having grandchildren,

  994. I don't want to harp

  995. on this all the time,

  996. but one of the things

  997. which is really neat

  998. about it is

  999. they come over

  1000. and they're all young

  1001. and so you have

  1002. the four-year-old grandchild

  1003. or the three-year-old

  1004. and my wife has

  1005. lots of different blocks

  1006. and, you know,

1007. so you get a kid,

  1008. it's a natural thing

1009. at a certain point in time,

  1010. they like to see

  1011. if they can make

  1012. the black blocks

1013. as hard as they possibly can.

  1014. I'm picturing

  1015. a three-year-old right now

1016. and one of the things

  1017. which is very natural

  1018. for the 18-month sister

  1019. tottering around

1020. is when they see a block,

1021. a pile of blocks like this,

  1022. she does,

  1023. pushes them all down.

  1024. Two natural processes

1025. that work at the same time.

  1026. Child number one,

  1027. the three-year-old goes,

  1028. ah, mommy,

  1029. and the 18-month-old

  1030. just totters away

  1031. with a big smile

  1032. hoping the three-year-old

1033. will make a tower of blocks

1034. again so they can be

  1035. knocked down.

  1036. But here's the thing,

  1037. isn't really,

  1038. if all there is

  1039. is this human life,

  1040. isn't it really

  1041. like a three-year-old

1042. making a tower of blocks

  1043. not knowing

  1044. when the 18-month

  1045. is going to come

1046. and knock them all down?

  1047. If all there is

  1048. is life,

  1049. isn't that what

  1050. life is really like?

  1051. I put money aside

  1052. for my pension,

  1053. I buy a house,

1054. I try to pay off

  1055. the mortgage,

  1056. I do this

  1057. and I don't know

1058. if I will be in a car accident

  1059. tomorrow

1060. that will wipe it all out,

  1061. I don't know

1062. if I'll die on my way home,

  1063. I don't know

  1064. if tomorrow

  1065. that lump

  1066. will turn out

  1067. to be cancer.

  1068. That in fact

  1069. all human life,

1070. if all you hope for

  1071. is in this life,

1072. the fact of the matter

  1073. is is that

  1074. we are the three-year-old

  1075. building a tower

  1076. not knowing

  1077. when the 18-month-old

  1078. is going to

  1079. knock it all down.

  1080. But the very nature

  1081. of hope implies

  1082. that there's something

  1083. more than that.

  1084. And what can be

  1085. more than that?

  1086. It has to be

  1087. something outside

  1088. of this world

1089. that fits with the fact

  1090. that our heart,

  1091. our soul,

  1092. our spirit,

  1093. our mind

  1094. is not just

  1095. of this world

  1096. of cause and effect.

1097. If hope is to be

  1098. real and enduring,

  1099. there must be

  1100. something outside

  1101. and more,

  1102. but not just

  1103. all outside,

  1104. which has nothing

  1105. to do with now,

  1106. but is present

  1107. amongst us.

  1108. And that's why

  1109. this next little bit

  1110. is so important.

1111. Look at what it says

  1112. next.

  1113. Verse 20.

  1114. Remember it said,

  1115. what is it?

  1116. The immeasurable greatness

  1117. of his power.

1118. That just went on before.

  1119. The immeasurable greatness

  1120. of his power.

  1121. Verse 19,

  1122. toward us,

  1123. I believe,

  1124. according to the working

  1125. of his great might.

  1126. Verse 20,

1127. that he worked in Christ

  1128. when he raised him

  1129. from the dead

  1130. and seated him

  1131. at his right hand

  1132. in the heavenly places.

  1133. You see,

  1134. here's the thing

  1135. which people don't

  1136. understand.

  1137. The Christian faith

1138. is not about being good.

  1139. If you're not good,

  1140. God will send lightning.

  1141. He'll get you.

1142. It's not about being good,

  1143. being good,

  1144. being good,

  1145. being good,

  1146. being good.

  1147. In fact,

  1148. it's about,

  1149. amongst other things,

  1150. coming to the point

  1151. in time you say,

1152. that is a rat race

  1153. that I am only

  1154. going to lose.

  1155. If I am honest

  1156. with myself,

  1157. if I am not a Pharisee,

1158. I am only going to lose

  1159. in that.

  1160. And the Christian life

  1161. is amongst other things

  1162. this very counterintuitive

  1163. message

1164. that the door to life

  1165. is behind you.

  1166. Accomplishing,

  1167. accomplishing,

  1168. accomplishing,

  1169. accomplishing,

  1170. accomplishing,

  1171. planning,

  1172. religious,

  1173. spiritual,

  1174. this,

1175. a little bit of that,

  1176. a bit of meaning,

  1177. going through life,

  1178. going through life,

  1179. going through life.

1180. But the door to life

  1181. begins when you stop.

  1182. It's called repentance.

  1183. And you realize

1184. that the door to life

  1185. is behind you.

  1186. God is calling you

  1187. back to himself.

  1188. And it's not just a call.

  1189. See,

1190. this is the wonderful thing

  1191. about this verse.

1192. Look at this verse again.

  1193. That he worked

  1194. in Christ

  1195. when he raised him

  1196. from the dead

  1197. and seated him

  1198. in his right hand

  1199. in the heavenly places.

  1200. You see,

1201. the gospel is the message.

  1202. That it's not just

  1203. that there's this hope

  1204. in a God

  1205. who is distant,

  1206. who created all things

  1207. and he's distant.

1208. He made us for himself,

  1209. but he's distant.

1210. The message of the gospel

1211. is that this distant God

  1212. became Emmanuel,

  1213. became God with us,

  1214. among us,

  1215. in our mess.

  1216. But without sinning,

  1217. without breaking fellowship

  1218. with God,

  1219. and this God

1220. came and dwelt among us

1221. and died on the cross.

  1222. He died the death

  1223. that we deserved.

  1224. All the death

  1225. which crushes us

  1226. and brings an end

1227. of all of our longings

  1228. and our yearnings,

  1229. if this life

  1230. is all there is,

  1231. all that death

  1232. that we deserve

  1233. and that we will

  1234. someday face

  1235. unless Christ returns

  1236. first for his people,

  1237. fell on him.

  1238. He died my death.

  1239. And the Christian faith

1240. is to put your hand

  1241. out to Jesus

  1242. and he comes

  1243. who's called you.

  1244. He takes your hand.

1245. He takes him to yourself,

  1246. takes me to himself,

1247. and I am united with him

1248. which is why Paul is saying

1249. that even in the midst

  1250. of my aging,

  1251. I'm united with Christ.

  1252. I'm united with Christ.

1253. I was united with him

  1254. in his death

1255. and I am united with him

1256. as God took a man

  1257. who died

  1258. and experienced

  1259. all there is

  1260. to experience of death

  1261. and rose

  1262. into resurrected life

  1263. and ascended

  1264. into the heavens

  1265. and that is who

  1266. the lowliest Christian

  1267. is united with.

  1268. Paul is in jail

1269. because he is a Christian.

  1270. Paul is in jail

1271. because he is a witness

  1272. to the resurrection

  1273. of Jesus.

1274. That is why he is in jail.

  1275. He says,

  1276. you can't stop me

  1277. from saying

  1278. that Jesus didn't rise

  1279. from the dead

1280. because if I did that,

1281. that would be a lie.

  1282. I saw him.

1283. He rose from the dead.

  1284. I know he died.

1285. I know the grave is empty.

1286. I know they never found

  1287. the body.

  1288. I saw him.

  1289. He is alive.

1290. And if I have to go to jail

  1291. because I won't deny that,

1292. I will go to jail.

1293. in five to six years after this,

1294. he dies a gruesome death.

1295. And he dies a gruesome death

  1296. saying,

  1297. he lives.

  1298. And he came

  1299. and died

  1300. and rose

  1301. for you.

  1302. He came and died

  1303. and rose

  1304. for you.

  1305. And then this

  1306. next little bit

  1307. as we start

  1308. to wrap it up.

  1309. It's something

  1310. that worries us,

1311. but it shouldn't worry us.

  1312. It's very wise.

1313. Look at the next little bit.

  1314. Verse 21.

  1315. Remember it says

  1316. that Jesus was seated

  1317. at the right hand

  1318. of the heavenly places

  1319. far above all rule

  1320. and authority

  1321. and power

  1322. and dominion

  1323. and above every name

  1324. that is named

1325. not only in this age

1326. but also in the age to come.

  1327. Jesus is above

  1328. all rule

  1329. and authority

  1330. and power

  1331. and dominion

  1332. and above every name

  1333. that is named

1334. not only in this age

1335. but in the age to come.

  1336. See,

  1337. here's what

  1338. it opens up

  1339. for us for hope.

1340. Every single one of us

  1341. have had times

  1342. when we've talked

  1343. to a friend

1344. to try to talk them

  1345. out of hoping

  1346. in something.

  1347. Really?

  1348. You hope

  1349. that guy's going

  1350. to make you happy?

  1351. Come on.

  1352. Smarten up.

  1353. That guy's going

  1354. to ruin you.

  1355. You really think

  1356. doing that's

  1357. going to make

  1358. like

  1359. we all know

  1360. what bad hopes are

  1361. and we all wish

  1362. that we could intervene

1363. and try to have people

  1364. sort of walk away

  1365. from bad hopes

  1366. and pick up

  1367. good hopes

  1368. and what this text

  1369. is pointing to

  1370. isn't a scary thing

  1371. but it's saying

  1372. listen,

  1373. anything that you

  1374. might hope in

  1375. anything that you

  1376. might hope in

  1377. put your trust in

  1378. anything that you

  1379. might long for

  1380. Jesus is higher

  1381. and it's not just

  1382. that Jesus is higher

1383. this is the same guy

  1384. he's for you

  1385. he's for you

  1386. he came

  1387. because he loves you

  1388. he came

  1389. and died for you

  1390. he took

  1391. his death

  1392. he took your death

  1393. and made it his

  1394. and he gives you

  1395. his life

  1396. and now

  1397. he's above everything

  1398. he sees everything

  1399. he can rule

  1400. in your life

  1401. this is good news

  1402. because the fact

  1403. of the matter is

  1404. is that every single

  1405. one of us

  1406. have something

  1407. right now

1408. going on in our lives

  1409. that if we're lucky

  1410. and if we're wise

  1411. in a year

  1412. we will say

  1413. we shouldn't have

  1414. been hoping in that

  1415. he can start to

  1416. rule your hopes

  1417. order your hopes

  1418. see that's what's

  1419. so important here

  1420. about this next

  1421. little bit

  1422. as well

  1423. look at this

  1424. verse 22 and 23

1425. and he put all things

  1426. under his feet

1427. and gave him his head

  1428. over all things

  1429. to the church

  1430. which is his body

  1431. the fullness of him

1432. who fills all in all

  1433. you see this

  1434. God puts everything

1435. under the feet of Jesus

  1436. he puts Canada

  1437. he puts United States

  1438. he puts Russia

  1439. he puts China

  1440. he puts hostile

  1441. spiritual powers

  1442. he puts idols

  1443. he puts good things

  1444. he puts bad things

  1445. he puts good things

  1446. he puts good things

  1447. he puts good things

  1448. he puts good things

  1449. he puts good things

1450. you're not under his feet

  1451. why?

  1452. you are his feet

  1453. you're his body

  1454. and the same God

  1455. who fills all things

  1456. orders all things

  1457. comes and fills you

  1458. to order you

1459. and so we can call out

  1460. to God

  1461. to give us hope

1462. and not just to give us hope

  1463. but God

  1464. Lord Jesus Christ

1465. may you be our true

  1466. wise

  1467. long

  1468. deep

  1469. enduring hope

  1470. and Lord Jesus Christ

1471. may you come into me

1472. and may you put to death

1473. help me to put to death

  1474. those things

  1475. that I should not

  1476. be hoping in

  1477. because they will only

  1478. hurt me

  1479. they are empty things

  1480. and may you come

  1481. into my life

  1482. and may you

  1483. help me to understand

1484. those things I'm hoping for

  1485. that are wrong

  1486. that they're bad

  1487. may you help me

1488. to no longer do those

  1489. and Father

1490. may you come and order

  1491. my hopes

  1492. because you see

1493. when Jesus comes into us

  1494. it doesn't mean

1495. that like for the gardener

  1496. it doesn't mean

  1497. well I can't hope

  1498. for a nice garden

  1499. next June

1500. because I have to only

  1501. hope in Jesus

  1502. no

  1503. no

  1504. he doesn't say

  1505. just pretend

  1506. you're not physical

  1507. pretend you're only

  1508. spiritual

  1509. and only hope

  1510. no

  1511. no

  1512. he comes

  1513. to restore

  1514. hope

  1515. to order

  1516. hope

  1517. to put them

  1518. in the right

  1519. place

  1520. that there be

  1521. a harmony

  1522. and a unity

  1523. and a union

  1524. of hopes

  1525. all centered

  1526. in Jesus

  1527. our great

  1528. hope

  1529. who came

  1530. and died

  1531. for us

  1532. and rose

  1533. from the dead

  1534. and is above

  1535. all powers

  1536. and authorities

  1537. and fills

  1538. all things

  1539. and he is present

  1540. not just in me

  1541. but in us

  1542. his church

  1543. and he doesn't

  1544. come

  1545. and fill

  1546. us

  1547. so

  1548. that we

  1549. should rule

  1550. no

  1551. he fills

  1552. us

  1553. so we will

  1554. proclaim

  1555. who Jesus

  1556. is

  1557. and so we

  1558. will bless

  1559. just close

  1560. how do I

  1561. grow good

  1562. hope

  1563. here's the

  1564. first thing

  1565. ask the question

  1566. think and pray

  1567. about it

  1568. how many of us

  1569. ever actually

  1570. say

  1571. Lord

  1572. what's good

  1573. hope

  1574. that's a good

  1575. question to bring

  1576. to Jesus

  1577. it's a good

  1578. question to bring

  1579. to your friends

  1580. what's good

  1581. hope

  1582. and then ask

  1583. what are my

  1584. functional hopes

  1585. like what are the

  1586. hopes that actually

  1587. go on in my

  1588. life

  1589. like how much

  1590. of my happiness

  1591. depends

  1592. true story

  1593. I shouldn't say

  1594. this

  1595. I went through

  1596. a period

  1597. of about

  1598. eight years

  1599. seven years

  1600. maybe

  1601. where I didn't

  1602. follow sports

  1603. I was walking

  1604. to school

  1605. one day

  1606. true story

  1607. this is before

  1608. the senators

  1609. okay so give me

  1610. some grace

  1611. and the maple

  1612. leafs had lost

  1613. the night before

  1614. and I was sick

  1615. to my stomach

1616. and it was as if

  1617. God said to me

  1618. George

  1619. why did your

  1620. happiness all

  1621. depend upon

  1622. whether the

  1623. maple leafs

  1624. live

  1625. win

  1626. and I realized

  1627. I had to go

  1628. cold turkey

  1629. I had to dive

  1630. I had to stop

  1631. following sports

  1632. completely

  1633. like what a

  1634. stupid thing

  1635. to base a

  1636. person's happiness

  1637. on is whether

  1638. a group of guys

  1639. who don't know

  1640. you who happen

  1641. to wear a blue

  1642. jersey win a

  1643. game

  1644. like what are

  1645. your functional

  1646. hopes

  1647. and one more

  1648. thing before I

  1649. do this final

  1650. slide I want to

  1651. say something

  1652. here it was

  1653. in my notes

  1654. I forgot to

  1655. say it

  1656. if there is

  1657. anybody here

  1658. today who's

  1659. struggling with

  1660. suicide

  1661. you need to

  1662. talk to somebody

  1663. talk to somebody

  1664. before you leave

  1665. okay talk to

  1666. somebody before

  1667. you leave

  1668. in fact if

  1669. you're struggling

  1670. with hope

  1671. speak to one

  1672. of the people

  1673. beside you

  1674. leave the church

  1675. go talk to

  1676. them about it

  1677. you got to

  1678. deal with it

  1679. don't do

  1680. something foolish

  1681. that will end

  1682. up in you

  1683. dying okay

  1684. you really need

  1685. to deal with it

  1686. and for some

  1687. of us remember

  1688. I said how

  1689. Jesus by

  1690. ruling over

  1691. all of our

  1692. hopes it

  1693. doesn't mean

  1694. he stops

  1695. using means

  1696. for some

  1697. of us we

  1698. need to maybe

  1699. have we need

  1700. to see a

  1701. doctor we

  1702. need to have

  1703. some other

  1704. type of

  1705. professional help

  1706. you need to

  1707. talk to a

  1708. counselor you

  1709. don't just

  1710. say well

  1711. because I'm

  1712. going to hope

  1713. in Jesus he's

  1714. going to take

  1715. away this no

  1716. no no no no

  1717. no no no no

  1718. no no

  1719. speak to come

  1720. and speak to

  1721. somebody okay

  1722. please do that

  1723. and you might

  1724. you might need

  1725. to talk to

  1726. counselor you

  1727. might need to

  1728. see a doctor

  1729. who can give

  1730. you some help

  1731. while you sort

  1732. some of these

  1733. things out

  1734. but one final

  1735. slide here's

  1736. what we pray

  1737. ask Jesus to

  1738. help you to

  1739. kill all

  1740. false hopes

  1741. ask Jesus to

  1742. help you to

  1743. kill all

  1744. false hopes

  1745. ask him to

  1746. help you to

  1747. kill all

  1748. fell hopes

  1749. in quotes

  1750. fell just

  1751. means evil

  1752. if you're

  1753. hoping that

  1754. somebody who

  1755. hurt you

  1756. that they

  1757. lose their

  1758. job that

  1759. their dog

  1760. dies their

  1761. car breaks

  1762. down they

  1763. break a

  1764. leg yeah

  1765. it's not

  1766. good got to

  1767. be working on

  1768. forgiveness you

  1769. want that hope

  1770. to die ask

  1771. Jesus to help

  1772. you ask Jesus

  1773. to order your

  1774. disordered hopes

  1775. to put your

  1776. hope that

  1777. the sends

  1778. win in a

  1779. proper place

  1780. finish 30th

  1781. it'll be a

  1782. good year

  1783. ask Jesus to

  1784. be your

  1785. highest deepest

  1786. fullest enduring

  1787. ruling hope

  1788. and ask Jesus

  1789. to grow hope

  1790. in you

  1791. ask him to

  1792. grow hope

  1793. in you

  1794. ask him for

  1795. it

  1796. please stand

  1797. let's bow

  1798. our heads

  1799. in prayer

  1800. father we

  1801. thank you so

  1802. much that you

  1803. know what's

  1804. going on in

  1805. each of the

  1806. lives that are

  1807. present in this

  1808. room and

  1809. and those who

  1810. will be listening

  1811. to this sermon

  1812. later on

  1813. online father

  1814. you know what's

  1815. going on in

  1816. their lives

  1817. and and so

  1818. father we

  1819. thank you that

  1820. you know what's

  1821. going on in

  1822. our lives and

  1823. still you love

  1824. us so you

  1825. sent Jesus

  1826. to die

  1827. and father if

  1828. there's anyone

  1829. here who has

  1830. not given their

  1831. life to Jesus

  1832. and they feel a

  1833. tug as a result

  1834. of this father

  1835. please come upon

  1836. them in a

  1837. powerful way

  1838. help them to

  1839. realize that you

  1840. are calling them

  1841. to be yours

  1842. you are hoping

  1843. they will stop

  1844. walking away

  1845. from you to

  1846. understand the

  1847. door to eternal

  1848. life is behind

  1849. them that they

  1850. need to stop

  1851. and turn and

  1852. look at you

  1853. and look at your

  1854. son who died on

  1855. the cross for

  1856. them father may

  1857. this be the day

  1858. that they come to

  1859. saving faith in

  1860. Jesus and father

  1861. you know those

  1862. of us who are

  1863. struggling with

  1864. despair struggling

  1865. with darkness

  1866. struggling with

  1867. hopelessness around

  1868. different things

  1869. father please grow

  1870. within us good

  1871. hope just as I've

  1872. put up here father

1873. help us to die to

  1874. false hopes to

  1875. recognize them and

  1876. die to them help

  1877. us to die to

  1878. things we are

  1879. hoping for that

  1880. are just morally

  1881. wrong father

  1882. please come in and

  1883. order our hopes

  1884. because they can be

  1885. so disordered we

  1886. can hope too much

  1887. in some things and

  1888. not enough in

  1889. something else and

  1890. most of all father

  1891. may Jesus be our

  1892. deep hope grow in

1893. us a deep hope that

  1894. Jesus is the ruler

  1895. he is the savior

1896. that he is the one

  1897. who is fitting us

  1898. for heaven father

  1899. grow in us this

  1900. deep hope and make

1901. each of us in the

  1902. midst of our

  1903. circumstances whether
