  1. The scripture reading comes from Micah chapter 6. Please follow along your bulletin or on the screen.

    Micah 6 chapter mention

  2. Hear what the Lord says.

  3. Arise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice.

  4. Hear, you mountains, the indictment of the Lord, and you enduring foundations of the earth.

  5. For the Lord has an indictment against his people, and he will contend with Israel.

  6. O my people, what have I done to you? How have I wearied you? Answer me.

  7. For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery,

  8. and sent before you Moses, Aram, and Miriam.

  9. O my people, remember what Balaam, king of Moab, devised,

  10. and what Balaam, the son of Beor, answered him,

  11. and what happened to Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of the Lord.

  12. With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high?

  13. Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?

  14. Would the Lord be pleased with the thousands of rams and ten thousands of rivers of oil?

  15. Shall I give my firstborn to my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

  16. He has told you, O man, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you,

  17. but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.

  18. This is the word of God.

  19. Thank you. Sylvie?

  20. We're not going to have an extended pastoral prayer today,

  21. but let's just pray briefly as we come to God's word.

  22. Heavenly Father, as we look at the scripture this morning,

  23. as we've said so many times, we are not here merely to be inspired,

  24. or merely encouraged, or entertained.

  25. We are here to meet with you, the living God,

  26. and we want to do that in your word.

  27. And so, we pray, O God, that you will speak to us from your word.

  28. We pray, Holy Spirit, take your words that are from your scripture,

  29. and apply it to our hearts and our lives.

  30. God, as we look at this topic this morning,

  31. this theme of your love for justice and mercy,

  32. we pray, God, that you transform our own hearts,

  33. that we will become more like you.

  34. And so, help us, we pray,

  35. that your word come alive to us, God.

  36. We pray that this won't just be the opinions of man,

  37. but that really, God, we'll encounter you today in your word.

  38. Come and lead and guide us, we pray.

  39. In your powerful and your majestic name.

  40. Amen.

  41. If you've been coming to Watermark for a while,

  42. you'll know we are working through this series called Watermark Essentials,

  43. and we're coming to the end,

  44. and we've been looking at our values as a church,

  45. the foundations upon which we as a church are built.

  46. And so, for four weeks, we looked at the gospel.

  47. What is the gospel?

  48. And the gospel really is the heart of Watermark Church.

  49. You take away the gospel,

  50. or if we start to drift from the gospel,

  51. let's close the doors.

  52. It's the reason why we exist.

  53. It's the heart of our church.

  54. And then we said,

  55. okay, but the gospel makes us a kind of community.

  56. And so, we looked at community for a couple of weeks,

  57. and how the gospel shapes us as a community.

  58. And then, over the last couple of weeks,

  59. we've been saying,

  60. yes, but God also calls us

  61. to be on mission with Him.

  62. That part of being part of the people of God

  63. is to be part of the mission of God.

  64. To be someone who follows Jesus

  65. is to join Him in His redemption plan,

  66. and what God is doing in the world.

  67. And so, we've been saying that

  68. mission is not something that the super Christians do.

  69. It's not an optional extra.

  70. It's not something that the pastors and the elders do.

  71. It is part of what it means to be a follower of Jesus

  72. is to join His redemption plan in the world.

  73. But then the question is,

  74. okay, but what does that mean?

  75. What does it actually look like?

  76. And so, last week, we answered that question one way

  77. by saying,

  78. to be part of God's plan for the world,

  79. His redemption plan,

  80. is to be agents of reconciliation.

  81. And so, we said,

  82. we are reconciled to bring reconciliation.

  83. Today, I want to look at part two of that question.

  84. What does it mean to be part of God's mission in the world?

  85. And not only are we agents of reconciliation,

  86. we are also God's agents of mercy and justice.

  87. Okay?

  88. So, that's where we're going today.

  89. To be part of God's people

  90. is to be part of His mission.

  91. What does that look like?

  92. It's to be His agents for mercy and justice in the world.

  93. And we're going to do that

  94. by looking at this very famous passage in Micah chapter 6.

    Micah 6 chapter mention

  95. Now, the background is this.

  96. The book of Micah is written by this prophet called Micah.

  97. You would never have guessed.

  98. And he writes to the nation of Israel around 740 BC.

  99. Now, at the time, Israel is not in a very good way.

  100. Okay?

  101. They've lost their way.

  102. The nation is actually divided into two.

  103. There's a northern kingdom and a southern kingdom,

  104. and they don't really get along so well.

  105. There is rampant wickedness and idolatry.

  106. There's all sorts of craziness that is going on in the nation of Israel.

  107. And God is bringing His judgment on the nation of Israel.

  108. And the way that Micah is written,

  109. it's written like a lawsuit.

  110. God is bringing His charge or His indictment against His people.

  111. And so, look at how it starts off.

  112. He starts off in verse 1,

  113. and He's calling His witnesses.

  114. Okay?

  115. So, it starts off,

  116. and His witnesses is creation.

  117. Look at what it says.

  118. Arise.

  119. Okay?

  120. Remember, you've seen those scenes in the movies,

  121. All Rise, the court is in session.

  122. Okay?

  123. He says,

  124. Arise.

  125. God, arise.

  126. Plead your case before the mountains.

  127. Let the hills hear your complaints.

  128. Listen to the Lord's lawsuit,

  129. you mountains and enduring foundations of the earth,

  130. because the Lord has a case against His people,

  131. and He will argue it against Israel.

  132. And so, God says,

  133. I'm coming to bring my case and my lawsuit against you,

  134. and He calls His witnesses to listen to His case.

  135. Except, He doesn't, in the next verse,

  136. lay out His case.

  137. You think He's now going to say what the problem is,

  138. but He doesn't actually read from the charge sheet,

  139. as it were.

  140. And the reason is,

  141. because He's done that previously in the book of Micah,

    Micah 2 chapter mention

  142. chapter 2 and chapter 3.

  143. God details the charges that He's bringing against His people.

  144. And so, look at what He says here in chapter 3.

  145. He says,

  146. This is what the Lord says,

  147. concerning the prophets,

  148. those who lead my people astray.

  149. Those who proclaim peace, peace,

  150. when they have food to sink their teeth into,

  151. but declare war against anyone

  152. who puts nothing in their mouths.

  153. Okay, so what's going on here?

  154. The leaders of Israel,

  155. when their bellies are full,

  156. when their bank accounts are full,

  157. when people are being generous and kind to them,

  158. ah, peace, peace, everything's fine.

  159. God bless you, brother.

  160. Go on your way, as you were.

  161. All's fine.

  162. But as soon as things don't turn out the way that they want,

  163. as soon as their bank accounts are getting a little empty,

  164. or maybe somebody in the congregation

  165. doesn't do what they want,

  166. war!

  167. God's not going to bless you.

  168. If you don't do what I say,

  169. well, you've got to be under God's judgment, right?

  170. So when the people are doing what they want,

  171. ah, peace, God bless you.

  172. Go on your way.

  173. But if not,

  174. oh, well, God's going to be displeased with you.

  175. Likewise, He goes on, verse 9.

  176. Listen to this,

  177. leaders of the house of Jacob,

  178. you rulers of the house of Israel,

  179. you who abhor justice,

  180. or pervert justice,

  181. and make crooked everything that's meant to be straight.

  182. Her leaders issue rulings for a bribe.

  183. Her priests teach for payment.

  184. Her prophets practice divination for money and silver.

  185. Okay, so corruption,

  186. perversion of justice is taking place.

  187. Maybe there's a dispute that's taking place in Israel.

  188. Two people aren't getting along.

  189. And they come to the leaders and say,

  190. how should we deal with this?

  191. And who do you think is going to get the favorable outcome?

  192. The one that's going to pay the higher bribe, right?

  193. Or maybe two friends,

  194. or there's disagreement,

  195. they come to the leaders,

  196. and the leaders are always favorable towards their friends,

  197. or to those that give the most money.

  198. And so what happens in Israel

  199. is the rich are getting richer,

  200. the poor are getting poorer.

  201. Those that have access to opportunities

  202. get more access to opportunities.

  203. Those that are disadvantaged

  204. get more disadvantaged.

  205. Those that are being tread on

  206. or become more downtrodden,

  207. because of the injustice that's happening in Israel.

  208. Now, how should God's people respond?

  209. God is saying there's a problem.

  210. We've got to do something about it.

  211. What should God's people do?

  212. Well, God's people have some ideas.

  213. Look at verse 6.

  214. They say,

  215. What shall we bring before the Lord

  216. when I come and bow before the God on high?

  217. What can I do to appease God

  218. or to win back His favor?

  219. Shall I come before Him

  220. with burnt offerings

  221. and year-old calves?

  222. In the Old Testament,

  223. a year-old calf is the choice offering.

  224. So should I come with a choice offering?

  225. That'll really please God.

  226. Verse 7.

  227. Would the Lord be pleased

  228. with a thousand rams,

  229. ten thousand streams of oil?

  230. So pure olive oil,

  231. very expensive,

  232. but very important to the offering.

  233. Is that what God wants?

  234. Maybe I should bring

  235. ten thousand streams of pure olive oil.

  236. God will be pleased with me then.

  237. Maybe rams and sheep,

  238. a hundred rams,

  239. a thousand rams.

  240. Should I give my firstborn son

  241. for my transgression,

  242. the offspring of my body?

  243. God, is that what you want?

  244. God, what do you want from us?

  245. Name what you want

  246. and God will do it.

  247. We'll bring it.

  248. Will that earn your favor, O God?

  249. Well, look what God's going to say.

  250. What is it that God wants from His people?

  251. Look at verse 8.

  252. He says,

  253. He has told you, O mankind,

  254. what is good.

  255. What does the Lord require of you?

  256. To do justice,

  257. to love mercy or kindness,

  258. and to walk humbly with your God.

  259. See, for the Israelites,

  260. they knew that things weren't good.

  261. God's bringing His charge against them.

  262. And their response is,

  263. Okay, fine.

  264. God, name your price.

  265. What is it that you want?

  266. Do you want money?

  267. We can give you money.

  268. You want offerings?

  269. We can give you offerings.

  270. Let me write a check.

  271. I can do that.

  272. God, you want sacrifice?

  273. How much do you want?

  274. A hundred sheep?

  275. A thousand sheep?

  276. Ten thousand sheep?

  277. God, what do you want from us?

  278. And God's response is,

  279. I don't want your stuff.

  280. I don't want your religious piety.

  281. I want your hearts.

  282. I want your hearts.

  283. Imagine a married couple.

  284. Imagine a couple are married,

  285. and the husband,

  286. let's just say,

  287. is,

  288. something goes wrong.

  289. And he is unfaithful to his wife.

  290. And he comes back and he says,

  291. Honey, I'm so sorry this has happened.

  292. How can I put this right?

  293. I'll tell you what,

  294. I'll buy you a diamond ring.

  295. You want an overseas holiday?

  296. Let's go on an overseas holiday together.

  297. Well, I don't know.

  298. I'll buy you a new car.

  299. Will that make you happy?

  300. What's the wife going to say?

  301. She says,

  302. I don't want your stuff.

  303. I want your heart.

  304. Friends,

  305. this is what God says to his people.

  306. He has told you,

  307. a man,

  308. what is good.

  309. And what does the Lord require of you

  310. but to do justice,

  311. to love mercy,

  312. and to walk humbly with your God?

  313. Now,

  314. why is it that God requires this of them?

  315. Of all the things that God could ask for his people,

  316. why does he want this?

  317. Why is this one of the pinnacle descriptions

  318. of what it means to love and trust and follow God?

  319. Throughout the scriptures,

  320. these two things of loving and serving God

  321. and loving and serving people

  322. are always come together.

  323. These two things of acting with justice

  324. and mercy towards people

  325. and walking with God

  326. are always found together.

  327. As we work our way through scripture,

  328. these two things are almost married to one another.

  329. It's almost as if God says,

  330. it's impossible for you to say,

  331. you love me,

  332. and yet have no regard for the people

  333. that I'm concerned about.

  334. And so that's why I remember Jesus.

  335. One day somebody comes to him,

  336. says,

  337. Jesus,

  338. what is the greatest commandment?

  339. Out of all the laws in the Old Testament,

  340. the hundreds of them,

  341. narrow it down.

  342. What's the greatest thing that we should do?

  343. And what does Jesus say?

  344. I want you to love the Lord your God

  345. with all your heart,

  346. your soul,

  347. your mind,

  348. and your strength.

  349. But then,

  350. he quickly adds the second one.

  351. But don't forget the second one,

  352. which is just like it.

  353. To love your neighbor as yourself.

  354. Now remember,

  355. nobody comes to Jesus and says,

  356. Jesus,

  357. what are the two greatest commandments?

  358. Just,

  359. look,

  360. I know there's 600,

  361. just give us the top two.

  362. Nobody does that.

  363. They come to him and say,

  364. Jesus,

  365. what's the greatest thing?

  366. And he says,

  367. to love God.

  368. But,

  369. there's another one,

  370. which is just like it.

  371. To love God,

  372. and to love your neighbor.

  373. For on these two things,

  374. hang all the law,

  375. and the prophets.

  376. Friends,

  377. to love God,

  378. and to love others.

  379. To serve God,

  380. and to serve others.

  381. To walk humbly with God,

  382. and to walk righteously with others.

  383. These two things,

  384. are actually two sides,

  385. of the same coin.

  386. Do you know that phrase?

  387. Two sides of the same coin.

  388. You've got a coin,

  389. and you look at,

  390. you can't say,

  391. well,

  392. I like this side,

  393. but the other side,

  394. I think I'm just going to throw it away.

  395. Right?

  396. If you've got a coin,

  397. it's got two sides,

  398. but they join together,

  399. they married.

  400. And what God has joined together,

  401. let no man separate.

  402. Right?

  403. Jesus says,

  404. to love God,

  405. and to love others,

  406. is what he's all about.

  407. And so that's why God says to his Israelites,

  408. mankind,

  409. he has told you what is good,

  410. and what does the Lord require of you?

  411. Now you might say,

  412. but when did God say this?

  413. When did he tell them?

  414. I mean,

  415. what verse is there,

  416. that he told them,

  417. this is what he requires of you?

  418. Friends,

  419. this is what God has always said.

  420. This is what the entire scriptures are all about.

  421. In many ways,

  422. this is what the entire Old Testament is about.

  423. Remember the Ten Commandments,

  424. we're going to look at them in a few weeks time,

  425. we're going to,

  426. in two weeks time,

  427. we're going to start preaching through the Ten Commandments.

  428. The first four commandments are all about

  429. what it means to walk humbly with God,

  430. to have no other gods,

  431. no other idols,

  432. to honor God's name,

  433. and honor his Sabbath.

  434. The next six are what it means to do justice,

  435. and righteousness,

  436. and mercy in the world,

  437. to honor your wedding vows,

  438. to honor your parents,

  439. to honor your words from your mouth,

  440. to not take from others.

  441. This has always been God's instruction to his people.

  442. This is what it means to be part of the people of God.

  443. And so in Jeremiah chapter 9,

    Jeremiah 9 chapter mention

  444. God says this,

  445. listen to this amazing verse.

  446. He says,

  447. this is what the Lord says,

  448. let not the wise man boast in his wisdom,

  449. let not the strong man boast in his strength,

  450. let not the rich person boast in his riches,

  451. but if you're going to boast in something,

  452. boast in this,

  453. that you understand and know me.

  454. And what does that mean?

  455. Who am I?

  456. That I am the Lord who practices mercy,

  457. and justice,

  458. and righteousness on the earth.

  459. For in these things I delight.

  460. He has told you a man what is good,

  461. and what does the Lord require of you,

  462. but to do justice,

  463. to love mercy,

  464. and to walk humbly with your God.

  465. Now,

  466. we need to define our terms here.

  467. What does that actually mean?

  468. What is justice and mercy?

  469. What does it mean to do these things?

  470. Well,

  471. are you getting ready?

  472. This is going to be a little theoretical

  473. for a few seconds,

  474. okay?

  475. You're going to have to have your game on.

  476. In the Bible,

  477. the word justice is the Hebrew word mishpat.

  478. And mishpat is a very common word

  479. in the Old Testament.

  480. It's translated in many different ways.

  481. But the broader sense is

  482. for things that are wrong

  483. or out of sync with God's order,

  484. for those things to be put right again.

  485. Or it can mean for things to operate

  486. as God intended in His created order.

  487. Now,

  488. of course,

  489. one of the ways that things can be put right

  490. is through punitive justice.

  491. So,

  492. somebody does something wrong

  493. and they commit a crime

  494. and they've got to pay for their crime.

  495. Things are put right that way.

  496. But in the Bible,

  497. justice,

  498. mishpat,

  499. often means more than that.

  500. It means restorative justice.

  501. It means to go out

  502. and seek

  503. things that are wrong in the world

  504. and to restore them

  505. or to put them right

  506. as God originally intended.

  507. It means specifically

  508. looking out for people

  509. that are disadvantaged,

  510. that are vulnerable,

  511. people that are powerless,

  512. those that are taken advantage of,

  513. those that are pushed

  514. on the outskirts

  515. or the margins of society,

  516. and to restore them

  517. to a place of dignity

  518. and equity

  519. and fairness.

  520. And so,

  521. that's why the Bible

  522. so often talks about

  523. these four things,

  524. the widows,

  525. the orphans,

  526. the immigrants,

  527. or the fatherless.

  528. These people

  529. that are most likely

  530. to be taken advantage of,

  531. God says,

  532. go out and find them,

  533. go and seek them

  534. and restore them

  535. to a place of dignity

  536. and equity

  537. and equality

  538. in society.

  539. And so,

  540. for instance,

  541. in Zechariah 7,

  542. God says this,

  543. this is what the Lord Almighty says,

  544. administer justice,

  545. okay,

  546. there's our word,

  547. mishpat,

  548. show mercy

  549. and compassion

  550. to one another.

  551. Do not oppress

  552. the widow,

  553. the orphan,

  554. the immigrant,

  555. or the poor.

  556. This is what God

  557. calls His people to do,

  558. to pursue justice,

  559. to pursue mishpat,

  560. to go out and seek

  561. those that are treated

  562. less than image bearers

  563. of God

  564. and to restore them

  565. to things that are right.

  566. Okay?

  567. So,

  568. that's our first word.

  569. Second word

  570. is the word mercy

  571. or loving kindness

  572. and it's the Hebrew word

  573. chesed.

  574. Is that right,

  575. Eric?

  576. Eric Amir

  577. is going to correct

  578. my Hebrew

  579. later on.

  580. And in the Bible,

  581. this word mercy

  582. or loving justice

  583. doesn't speak so much

  584. about our actions,

  585. what we do,

  586. it talks about

  587. our hard attitudes.

  588. It's an attitude

  589. of having compassion

  590. and kindness

  591. towards those around us.

  592. It's actually the word

  593. that most often

  594. describes God's

  595. steadfast love

  596. to His people.

  597. And so,

  598. in Micah 6 verse 8,

    Micah 6:8

  599. it talks about this.

  600. It says,

  601. I want you to do justice,

  602. I want you to go out

  603. and find those

  604. that are oppressed,

  605. but I want you to do it

  606. with an attitude

  607. of compassion

  608. and kindness

  609. in your hearts.

  610. So,

  611. Tim Keller says

  612. it like this.

  613. At first,

  614. we may think

  615. acting justly

  616. and loving mercy

  617. are two different things,

  618. but they're actually not.

  619. Acting justly

  620. is the action

  621. what we must do,

  622. but being full of mercy

  623. and compassion

  624. describes the attitude

  625. or the motive

  626. behind that action.

  627. So,

  628. think about this.

  629. You can say,

  630. okay,

  631. yes,

  632. yes,

  633. I must do justice,

  634. right?

  635. We must go out

  636. to the marginalized

  637. and the poor,

  638. and you can go

  639. and do that,

  640. but you can do it

  641. with an attitude

  642. of arrogance

  643. or superiority

  644. like,

  645. oh,

  646. these guys,

  647. they're so lucky

  648. to have me

  649. in their life.

  650. They're so lucky

  651. that I'm such a kind person.

  652. I'm giving of my time.

  653. All we can do

  654. is with a savior complex,

  655. right?

  656. Like,

  657. I will come

  658. and save the world.

  659. Thank goodness

  660. that Hong Kong

  661. has a church

  662. like Watermark.

  663. Here we are.

  664. Welcome us.

  665. No,

  666. no,

  667. no,

  668. no.

  669. Friends,

  670. God says,

  671. I want you

  672. to do justice,

  673. but do it

  674. with mercy,

  675. do it with compassion,

  676. with steadfast love

  677. in your hearts.

  678. Then there's a third word

  679. that the Bible uses

  680. to describe God's heart,

  681. and it's the word

  682. tzedekah,

  683. or in English,

  684. righteousness.

  685. When you think

  686. of someone being righteous,

  687. we can often think

  688. of someone

  689. who is morally superior

  690. or very religious,

  691. right?

  692. But in the Bible,

  693. the word righteous

  694. actually has to do

  695. with the way

  696. we handle our relationships,

  697. both with God

  698. and with one another.

  699. Alec Mottier

  700. is an Old Testament scholar,

  701. and he said

  702. that those that are righteous

  703. are those who are right

  704. with God

  705. and therefore committed

  706. to putting all other

  707. relationships in life

  708. right as well.

  709. And so,

  710. according to scriptures,

  711. to be righteous

  712. is not

  713. a private standard

  714. of morality

  715. like being honest

  716. and not being greedy

  717. and being sexually pure.

  718. Okay?

  719. According to scriptures,

  720. being righteous

  721. is inherently social.

  722. It's communal.

  723. It's the way

  724. that we treat

  725. other people

  726. with dignity

  727. and equity

  728. and respect.

  729. And so,

  730. look at God's call

  731. to his people

  732. to practice righteousness

  733. and justice.

  734. It's all over the Bible.

  735. Look at Proverbs 31.

  736. He says this,

  737. Speak up,

  738. judge righteously.

  739. Now,

  740. what does that mean?

  741. What does it mean

  742. to be those

  743. that judge righteously?

  744. He says,

  745. Speak up for those

  746. that have no voice.

  747. Pursue justice

  748. for the oppressed

  749. and the dispossessed.

  750. Defend the cause

  751. of the oppressed

  752. and the needy.

  753. Or,

  754. Jeremiah 22,

  755. this is what the Lord says.

  756. Administer justice

  757. and righteousness.

  758. Rescue the victim

  759. of robbery

  760. from his oppressor.

  761. Don't exploit

  762. or brutalize

  763. the immigrant,

  764. the orphan,

  765. or the widow.

  766. And so,

  767. throughout the scripture,

  768. God constantly says,

  769. this is what it means

  770. to be the people of God,

  771. is to love

  772. and practice justice,

  773. to find those

  774. that are oppressed

  775. and to raise them up,

  776. to do so with mercy

  777. and compassion in our hearts

  778. and to practice righteousness

  779. towards those around us.

  780. Old Testament scholar,

  781. Jane Oswald,

  782. says it like this,

  783. When God called

  784. the rulers of his people

  785. to do justice

  786. and righteousness

  787. for his people,

  788. this didn't mean

  789. enforcing some abstract

  790. law code

  791. or to ensure

  792. the rights of his subjects.

  793. Rather,

  794. it meant to be

  795. so in tune

  796. with the sovereign God

  797. of creation,

  798. to walk with the author

  799. of life,

  800. so in tune

  801. with his character

  802. and his desires

  803. and his wishes,

  804. that his rightness,

  805. his order for life,

  806. would be made

  807. to prevail in the nation

  808. with the inevitable result

  809. that the good,

  810. which is inherent

  811. in the creation

  812. of the good God,

  813. will be unleashed

  814. upon the earth.

  815. See what he's saying there?

  816. He's saying

  817. the people of God

  818. are meant to so walk

  819. with God

  820. that God's heart

  821. of compassion

  822. for the poor

  823. and the marginalized

  824. becomes our heart.

  825. That God's desire

  826. for those that are oppressed

  827. becomes our desire.

  828. That we so walk

  829. with God

  830. that becoming like him

  831. changes the world

  832. and the city

  833. in which we live.

  834. And so that's why

  835. Jesus gets so upset

  836. with the religious leaders

  837. of his day.

  838. Remember at one point

  839. he says to religious leaders,

  840. he says,

  841. you guys have got

  842. the technicalities down.

  843. You tithe on everything,

  844. even your pot plants

  845. in your garden.

  846. You know,

  847. you've got a mint bush

  848. in your garden

  849. and you work out,

  850. okay,

  851. nine leaves for me,

  852. one leaf for God.

  853. You've got some herbs

  854. and spices,

  855. you've got,

  856. okay,

  857. nine pots for me,

  858. one pot for God.

  859. You've worked it out

  860. technically,

  861. but you've forgotten

  862. and what God's

  863. really concerned about

  864. is justice

  865. and mercy

  866. and righteousness.

  867. These,

  868. Jesus says,

  869. you should have abandoned,

  870. you should have pursued

  871. without abandoning

  872. the first things.

  873. Friends,

  874. God's call for his people

  875. to be those

  876. who practice righteousness

  877. and justice

  878. and mercy

  879. is all over the Bible.

  880. almost every book

  881. in the Old Testament,

  882. there's this call

  883. to be his people

  884. that administer justice,

  885. to pursue righteousness

  886. and mercy.

  887. And it's all over the place

  888. and God's call

  889. for his people

  890. is not just to be nice people,

  891. it's not just to be kind-hearted

  892. and certainly not just

  893. to write a check

  894. to ease our conscience.

  895. God calls us

  896. to be those

  897. that seek out

  898. the vulnerable,

  899. that pursue

  900. the disadvantaged,

  901. who go after

  902. those that are susceptible

  903. to abuse

  904. and to stand with them,

  905. to speak up

  906. for those

  907. that have no voice

  908. in society

  909. because they've got

  910. no authority

  911. in society,

  912. to come alongside

  913. those that are downtrodden

  914. or forgotten

  915. and to give them

  916. dignity and honor

  917. where society

  918. gives them

  919. no dignity and honor

  920. because they are made

  921. in the image of God,

  922. because they inherently

  923. have dignity

  924. as his people.

  925. Now,

  926. as we come to a close,

  927. let's ask the question,

  928. why?

  929. Why should we do this?

  930. Friends,

  931. why is it that as a church

  932. we must be those

  933. that are agents

  934. not only of reconciliation

  935. but agents of justice

  936. and mercy

  937. in our city?

  938. There are about

  939. 2,700 reasons

  940. and we'll just

  941. look at a bunch of them.

  942. Okay?

  943. It's all over the scripture.

  944. Let me just give us

  945. a couple.

  946. One of the first reasons

  947. is this.

  948. Because God identifies

  949. with the poor

  950. and the vulnerable.

  951. Do you know what I mean

  952. when I say,

  953. when I talk about

  954. name dropping?

  955. Do you know that phrase?

  956. Name dropping

  957. is when you are

  958. in a conversation

  959. with your friends

  960. and you drop the name

  961. in the conversation

  962. of somebody

  963. really important

  964. or famous

  965. so that other people

  966. will associate you

  967. with that famous person.

  968. Right?

  969. So for instance,

  970. you may be

  971. with your friends

  972. and you just casually say,

  973. I was talking to my friend

  974. Jack Ma this week

  975. and we were just

  976. talking about

  977. investment stuff

  978. and suddenly people say,

  979. you know Jack Ma?

  980. And your status

  981. in their eyes

  982. gets increased.

  983. Okay?

  984. Or you say,

  985. I was just emailing

  986. this guy John Piper

  987. and we were just discussing

  988. Micah 6

  989. and talking about it

  990. and suddenly people say,

  991. you know John Piper?

  992. Wow, okay,

  993. you must be

  994. really somebody.

  995. Well, you know,

  996. I was talking to my friend

  997. Brett Iliad

  998. and you know Brett?

  999. Wow, okay,

  1000. something like that.

  1001. In the Bible,

  1002. God constantly

  1003. stands with

  1004. or associates

  1005. with a certain group

  1006. of people.

1007. But it's not the kind

  1008. of people you'd think

  1009. he does.

  1010. God constantly

  1011. identifies

  1012. or takes his stand

  1013. with the outcasts

  1014. and the marginalized

  1015. and the poor

  1016. of society.

  1017. The downtrodden

  1018. and those that society

  1019. don't look

  1020. very well upon.

  1021. In Psalm 68,

  1022. God says this,

  1023. he introduces himself,

  1024. think about this,

  1025. think about how you

  1026. introduce yourself.

  1027. Maybe you're going to

  1028. give a talk

  1029. at an evening

  1030. and someone says,

  1031. this is, you know,

  1032. Reverend Dr.

  1033. Chris Thornton.

  1034. Okay?

  1035. Or this is

  1036. Dr.

  1037. Samson,

  1038. you know,

  1039. whatever it is.

  1040. Look at how God

  1041. introduces himself.

  1042. I am the father

  1043. to the fatherless,

  1044. the defender

  1045. of the widows.

  1046. Some killer

  1047. comments on this

  1048. and he says,

1049. this is one of the

  1050. main things that God

1051. is doing in the world.

  1052. He identifies

  1053. with the powerless

  1054. and he takes up

  1055. their cause.

  1056. In the ancient world,

  1057. this was absolutely

  1058. scandalous.

  1059. The gods

  1060. and the deities

  1061. of the day

  1062. were always

  1063. associated

  1064. with society's

  1065. elites,

  1066. with the captains

  1067. and the commanders

  1068. of armies,

  1069. with the leaders

  1070. and the generals,

  1071. with the kings

  1072. and the rulers

  1073. of the world.

  1074. The priests

  1075. were always those

  1076. that were associated

  1077. with cultural elites.

  1078. But here God,

1079. the God of the Bible,

  1080. chooses to associate,

  1081. to identify,

  1082. to name drop

  1083. the outcasts

  1084. and the vulnerable

  1085. and the abused

  1086. and the poor

  1087. of society.

  1088. God takes a stand

  1089. with the widows

  1090. and the orphans

  1091. and the evangrists

  1092. and the powerless.

  1093. Those that are

  1094. most vulnerable,

1095. most likely to be abused,

  1096. have a special place

  1097. in God's heart.

  1098. And therefore,

  1099. dear friends,

  1100. they must have

  1101. a special place

1102. in our hearts as well.

  1103. Okay?

  1104. That's one reason.

  1105. God identifies

  1106. with the poor

  1107. and the vulnerable.

  1108. Second reason is this.

  1109. Every human being

1110. is made in the image

  1111. of God.

1112. If you think about it,

  1113. sometimes in a city

  1114. like this,

1115. we can treat our animals

  1116. better than we can

  1117. treat human beings.

  1118. That wasn't meant

  1119. to be funny.

  1120. I'm sorry.

  1121. It was.

  1122. We really can, right?

  1123. But every human being,

  1124. whether they are

  1125. mentally challenged,

  1126. whether they are crippled,

  1127. whether they live

  1128. in a cage home,

  1129. whether they are

  1130. multi-billionaires,

  1131. every human being

  1132. was knit together

  1133. in their mother's womb.

  1134. And inherently

  1135. has a dignity

  1136. and an equality

  1137. and something beautiful

  1138. about them

  1139. because they are made

1140. in the image of God.

  1141. Every human being

  1142. Jesus Christ

1143. hung on the cross for

  1144. and said,

  1145. it is finished.

  1146. Every human being

  1147. Jesus poured out

  1148. his life for.

  1149. And therefore,

1150. there is no human being

  1151. on the planet

  1152. that does not deserve

  1153. the dignity

  1154. and the respect

  1155. and the equality

  1156. that every other

  1157. human being

  1158. deserves

  1159. and is expected of.

  1160. fundamentally,

  1161. our dignity

  1162. and our identity

  1163. as people

  1164. is not found

  1165. in our bank accounts

  1166. or where we live

  1167. but in the fact

  1168. that we are made

1169. in the image of God

  1170. and carry his fingerprint,

  1171. his thumbprint

  1172. upon us.

1173. Here is one last reason.

  1174. Why is it imperative

  1175. that as a church

  1176. we become agents

  1177. of mercy and justice

  1178. in our city?

  1179. One of the reasons

  1180. is because it will

  1181. show us the gospel.

  1182. about 200 years ago

  1183. there was this

  1184. Scottish preacher

  1185. called Robert Murray

  1186. McShane.

1187. It is a strange name.

1188. He died as a young man.

1189. He was 29 years old

  1190. when he died.

1191. He was only a pastor

  1192. for 8 years

1193. and yet God used him

  1194. really powerfully

  1195. in Scotland.

  1196. He was trying to

  1197. urge his congregation

  1198. to be those

  1199. that give generously

  1200. of their finances

  1201. to the marginalized

  1202. and the vulnerable

  1203. in their city.

1204. But as he did this

  1205. he found that people

  1206. were coming back

  1207. to him and saying

  1208. but the people

  1209. are not thankful

  1210. or the people

  1211. in our city

  1212. they don't deserve it

  1213. or when we give

  1214. of our money

  1215. to the poor

  1216. and the marginalized

  1217. they are just

  1218. going to abuse it.

  1219. They are going to

  1220. go and buy alcohol

  1221. or they are not

  1222. going to take care

  1223. of themselves.

  1224. When we are generous

  1225. people abuse

  1226. our kindness

  1227. and they are not

  1228. even thankful.

1229. Why should we do this?

  1230. Listen to how

  1231. Robert Murray

  1232. McShane

  1233. answered them.

  1234. He says

  1235. some of us

  1236. might say

  1237. but my money

  1238. is mine.

  1239. I worked hard

  1240. for it.

  1241. I studied hard

  1242. for it.

  1243. I labored for it.

  1244. It's my money.

  1245. Friends

  1246. might not Jesus Christ

  1247. have said the same

  1248. thing.

1249. My blood is my own.

1250. My life is my own.

  1251. Friends

  1252. if Jesus had said

  1253. that to us

  1254. where would we

  1255. have been?

  1256. Some of us

  1257. might say

  1258. yeah but the poor

  1259. and the destitute

  1260. they are undeserving.

  1261. Friends

  1262. might not Christ

  1263. have said that

  1264. about us.

  1265. Jesus might

  1266. have looked at us

  1267. and said

  1268. but they're wicked.

  1269. They rebel

  1270. against my father.

  1271. Shall I lay down

  1272. my life

  1273. for these undeserving

  1274. sinners?

  1275. No

  1276. I'll give my life

  1277. for the good angels.

  1278. Dear friends

  1279. he gave his blood

  1280. for the undeserving

  1281. for you

  1282. and for me.

  1283. Some of us

  1284. might say

  1285. but the poor

  1286. will abuse

  1287. our kindness.

  1288. They'll take advantage

  1289. of our generosity.

  1290. Dear friend

  1291. might not Christ

  1292. have said the same

  1293. of us

  1294. and with far

  1295. greater truth.

  1296. Christ knew

  1297. that thousands

  1298. would trample

  1299. his blood

  1300. under their feet.

  1301. That most of us

  1302. would despise

  1303. his death

  1304. on the cross

  1305. and that many

  1306. of us

  1307. would use

  1308. his mercy

  1309. and his grace

  1310. as an excuse

  1311. to sin even more.

  1312. And yet

1313. he went to the cross

  1314. for us still.

  1315. Oh dear brother

  1316. if you would be

  1317. like Christ

  1318. give much

  1319. give often

  1320. give freely

  1321. to the outcasts

  1322. to the poor

  1323. to the thankless

  1324. to those

  1325. who seem

  1326. undeserving

  1327. Christ is glorious

  1328. and he's happy

1329. and so will you be.

  1330. It's not your money

  1331. I want

  1332. it's your happiness.

  1333. Remember

  1334. Christ's own words

  1335. it is more blessed

  1336. to give

  1337. than to receive.

  1338. Friends

  1339. as we

  1340. come to a close

  1341. I want us to

  1342. look at one last

  1343. verse in Micah

    Micah 6 chapter mention

  1344. chapter 6.

  1345. I wonder if you

  1346. picked up on it

1347. when we read it earlier.

  1348. The people of Israel

  1349. they are convinced

1350. that they are in the wrong.

  1351. Things have not

  1352. they are wicked

  1353. they are unjust

  1354. things are going wrong

  1355. and they are saying

  1356. what should we do?

1357. How can we put this

  1358. right again?

  1359. Should we bring

  1360. an offering?

  1361. Should we bring

  1362. gold and silver?

  1363. Should we bring

  1364. a thousand rams?

  1365. What should we do?

1366. And then in verse 7

1367. there is this amazing line

  1368. should we offer up

  1369. our offspring?

  1370. Should we give

  1371. our own son

  1372. to please

  1373. the gods?

  1374. Friends

  1375. in the ancient world

  1376. that's what you did.

  1377. If you wanted

  1378. to please the gods

  1379. you burnt your children

  1380. in the fire

  1381. as an offering

  1382. to the gods

  1383. to earn their favor.

  1384. Friends

  1385. in the gospel

  1386. we have a God

  1387. who doesn't require

  1388. that of us

1389. but he did that himself.

  1390. Friends

  1391. in the gospel

  1392. we have a God

  1393. who knew

  1394. that we were lost

  1395. who knew

  1396. the wickedness

  1397. in our hearts

  1398. that knew

  1399. that we deserved

  1400. his judgment

  1401. and rather than

  1402. requiring that of us

  1403. he gave

  1404. of himself.

  1405. He sent

  1406. his own son.

  1407. He sent

  1408. Jesus

  1409. to die

  1410. on the cross

  1411. in our place

  1412. rather than saying

  1413. what will you give

  1414. of me

  1415. to be reconciled?

1416. Here we have a God

  1417. that came

  1418. to the outcasts

  1419. to the unjust

  1420. to the undeserving

  1421. to the lost

  1422. and the broken

  1423. and he said

  1424. I will give

  1425. you

  1426. my son

  1427. that you

  1428. can be included

  1429. in my family.

  1430. Friends

  1431. in the gospel

  1432. we have a God

  1433. that doesn't require

  1434. that of us

  1435. but he gave

  1436. of himself.

  1437. Friends

  1438. as we be those

  1439. that go out

  1440. to be agents

  1441. of mercy

  1442. and justice

  1443. as we join

  1444. God

  1445. what he's doing

  1446. in the world

  1447. friends

  1448. let us never

  1449. forget

  1450. that the basis

  1451. for any

  1452. mercy and justice

  1453. any grace

  1454. that we give

  1455. to our city

  1456. is the great

  1457. mercy and grace

  1458. that we have

  1459. received in God.

  1460. Friends

  1461. let us remember

  1462. that we were dead

  1463. in our sins

  1464. and God sent

  1465. his son.

1466. He came to find us

  1467. he came to hang

  1468. on the cross

  1469. to pour out

  1470. his life for us

  1471. to give us

  1472. new lives

  1473. that we can

  1474. be reconciled.

  1475. Friends

  1476. if God

  1477. had left us

  1478. where we were

  1479. where would we be?

  1480. Friends

  1481. if God

  1482. had treated us

  1483. as we deserve

  1484. what would our

  1485. future look like?

  1486. Friends

  1487. if God

  1488. had only loved

  1489. and served

  1490. the worthy

  1491. who of us

  1492. would be saved?

  1493. No dear friends

  1494. Christ came

  1495. from the lost

  1496. and the broken

  1497. he came to

  1498. pour out his life

  1499. as an offering

  1500. he came to

  1501. rescue and to

  1502. save us

  1503. that we might

  1504. have hope in him

  1505. out of the overflow

  1506. of the mercy

  1507. and the justice

  1508. we have received

  1509. let us be agents

  1510. of mercy

  1511. and justice

  1512. in our world.

  1513. He has shown you

  1514. a man

  1515. what is good

  1516. and what is it

  1517. that the Lord

  1518. requires of us?

  1519. To act justly

  1520. to love mercy

  1521. and kindness

  1522. and to walk

  1523. humbly

  1524. with our God.

  1525. Let's pray together.

  1526. Heavenly Father

  1527. good and gracious God

  1528. God

  1529. when we look

  1530. at your word

  1531. Father God

  1532. what should we say?

  1533. God

  1534. when we read

  1535. your word

  1536. we like the nation

  1537. of Israel

  1538. have to get on

  1539. our knees

  1540. and say

  1541. guilty as charged.

  1542. Father

  1543. we are

  1544. not that different

  1545. from them.

  1546. We are not that

  1547. different from the

  1548. Pharisees God.

  1549. In our lives

  1550. we come and we

  1551. do our religious

  1552. thing but God

  1553. in our hearts

  1554. so often we are

  1555. living for ourselves.

  1556. Oh Father

  1557. be gracious

  1558. towards us.

  1559. Father

  1560. be merciful

  1561. towards us.

  1562. Oh great God

  1563. do not give us

  1564. what we deserve

  1565. we pray.

  1566. Father

  1567. we pray

  1568. that as your

  1569. gospel gets

  1570. into our hearts

  1571. that you will

  1572. not only save us

  1573. but you will

  1574. transform us.

  1575. And we pray

1576. that we as a church

  1577. will be those

  1578. that are so moved

  1579. by the gospel

  1580. so changed

  1581. by your

  1582. incredible

  1583. faithfulness

  1584. to us

  1585. that God

  1586. it will soften

  1587. our hearts

  1588. towards our

  1589. brothers and

  1590. sisters in the

  1591. city and in

  1592. this world.

  1593. God we pray

  1594. that you really

  1595. will use us

  1596. as a church.

  1597. God use us

  1598. disproportionately.

  1599. Help us God

  1600. to be those

  1601. that do

  1602. love and act

  1603. justly in our

  1604. city God.

  1605. that do so

  1606. with mercy

  1607. and compassion

  1608. and steadfast

  1609. love in our

  1610. hearts

  1611. because we are

  1612. those that are

  1613. walking humbly

  1614. with you.

  1615. Father we give

  1616. you permission

  1617. to wreck our

  1618. lives God

  1619. where our lives

  1620. are comfortable

  1621. and convenient

  1622. God where our

  1623. lives are tame

  1624. we pray God

  1625. come and help us

  1626. to walk with you

  1627. and God that

  1628. will mean changes

  1629. we acknowledge that

  1630. Christ come and

  1631. have your way

  1632. in our life.

  1633. come and have

  1634. your way God.

  1635. Christ come and

  1636. have your way in

  1637. our church Lord.

  1638. Christ come and

  1639. have your way in

  1640. our city.

  1641. Lord we pray that

  1642. it will be in

  1643. Hong Kong as it

  1644. is in heaven.

  1645. Use us we pray

  1646. in your powerful

  1647. and majestic name.

  1648. Amen.

  1649. Amen.
