  1. Father, this is your word, and in many ways, your word to us this morning is a great offense to us.

  2. And so, Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would move deeply in our hearts

  3. to pause us in our offense or dismissing of your word.

  4. And, Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would bring your word very deep into our hearts,

  5. the center of whom we are, that we might, Father, understand and be gripped by the gospel,

  6. this almost unimaginable good news that you offer to people like us.

  7. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  8. Please be seated.

  9. Amen.

  10. So, in morning prayer, we get to begin the sermon with the sound of children singing,

  11. which is sort of an interesting thing.

  12. I don't know how many of you paid attention to Matt when he was reading the text at the beginning of the service,

  13. but if you were listening, it's a very, very offensive text.

  14. It's a text of the Bible that says you're all dead, you're by nature children of wrath,

  15. by nature you follow hostile spiritual forces, and you follow a spirit of rebellion,

  16. and it's a very, very hard text, a text that people often turn away from.

  17. And I don't like offending people.

  18. I'm very Canadian, so I don't like offending people.

  19. But one of the things we do here in this church is we preach through the Bible.

  20. We preach through whole books of the Bible, and we don't try to hide things or avoid things

  21. or pretend that certain things aren't here.

  22. And so, what we're going to do is we're going to walk towards this problem,

  23. and what you have to understand is that this is, in a sense,

  24. a red pill and a blue pill moment for each of us.

  25. Many of you instantly get the analogy.

  26. There's a famous movie from some 20 years ago or whatever called The Matrix,

  27. and in it, early on in the movie, there's this moment where a man named Morpheus

  28. speaks to a man named Neo, and he holds out his hands,

  29. and he said there's a red pill and a blue pill.

  30. The choice is yours.

  31. If you take the blue pill, you just continue to live your life the way it is right now,

  32. and you just live thinking the things that are thought and going the way that things go.

  33. But if you take the red pill, if you take the red pill, you'll know the truth,

  34. and your life will be completely changed.

  35. And as those of us know, this isn't a spoiler or anything like that in the movie

  36. for those who haven't actually seen it, the red pill reveals a very, very harsh and uncomfortable truth

  37. that everybody in the world is living a delusion.

  38. They're, in fact, in real life, they're hooked up to a machine,

  39. and basically a world of machines is sucking the energy out of them to fuel the machines,

  40. and to stop human beings from disconnecting themselves to the machines.

  41. They basically work in the brains of human beings to create an illusory world

  42. where they're all happy and going about and free.

  43. And Neo, in the movie, chooses the red pill, not the blue pill.

  44. He chooses the pill that's going to be uncomfortable, but it's true.

  45. And that's what the Bible is doing for us here today.

  46. The last two weeks, as we've been looking through chapter 1,

  47. it's told us spectacular promises and truths about what it means to be in Christ.

  48. And now the text is going to take a step back and says,

  49. I want you to understand what's going on, what's really going on,

  50. what the choice is, what the before story is before these wonderful promises.

  51. And that's what we're going to look at right now.

  52. So here's how we begin.

  53. If you have your Bibles, you can follow along.

  54. And I'll also have the text up there on the screen.

  55. In a couple of cases, you'll notice that the translation,

  56. I'm basically using the ESV a couple of times.

  57. There's going to be a slight difference in some of the wording,

  58. and that's just you can thank a man whose last name is Baugh, B-A-U-G-H,

  59. who's a Greek scholar.

  60. And sometimes I've changed it to be a little bit less grammatical,

  61. but to actually bring home the underlying language better.

  62. And here's how the text begins.

  63. And you were dead in the transgressions and sins in which you once walked.

  64. Remember, this is a red pill moment.

  65. And you were dead in the transgressions and sins in which you once walked.

  66. Think if you're using the ESV, it says trespasses.

  67. The word transgressions means that there's a sense of the rightness of the world,

  68. and there's the sense of moral laws and rightness of the world,

  69. and that at different times in your life, you specifically go against what you know is the right thing to do.

  70. You fail to do the good that you should, or you do something that you know is wrong.

  71. And that's this idea behind transgression.

  72. It's consciously going against things which you know are right.

  73. And sins is a more personal word, in a sense, getting right in God's face

  74. or saying something to God about how you're going to turn your back on him.

  75. You don't like him.

  76. You don't want him present.

  77. It's a very God-centered word.

  78. But here's the thing.

  79. The word dead actually means dead.

  80. In fact, here's my point connected with it.

  81. By nature, you are dead.

  82. That's what the Bible is saying.

  83. By nature, you are dead.

  84. Now, the things which are going on in these first three verses of the text,

  85. it deeply offends, especially contemporary Canadians,

  86. where we believe that fundamentally we're good,

  87. and we don't like to think about death or talk about death

  88. or think about death's finality.

  89. We like to amuse ourselves and think about anything other than death.

  90. But this text, when it says dead,

  91. it really means if you go to a funeral home

  92. and you see the bodies in the caskets,

  93. that's us.

  94. And that's a bit of a shocking thing to say about human beings.

  95. Now, actually, interestingly enough,

  96. it's actually empirically true.

  97. If you think about it for a second,

  98. it's actually empirically true.

  99. From the moment that you're conceived in your mother's womb,

  100. when you become a zygote,

  101. if I'm pronouncing that word correctly,

  102. from that moment,

  103. and you become, in a sense,

  104. you, in a real sense,

  105. you become you at that moment.

  106. Your DNA is all there.

  107. The basic things as to whether you'll have certain illnesses,

  108. whether, like,

  109. I have my mother's father's hairline,

  110. for instance.

  111. You know, I have,

  112. if you know,

  113. I have, like,

  114. I have a true nose.

  115. I mean,

  116. it's a real nose.

  117. My mother's maiden name was True,

  118. T-R-E-W.

  119. I have a true nose.

  120. I have the same type of nose as my mother's dad.

  121. All those things are sort of programmed into you

  122. right from the moment you become a zygote.

  123. You know what else is also true from the moment you become a zygote?

  124. You'll die.

  125. You'll die.

  126. Like, isn't that true?

  127. That's empirically true.

  128. You know,

  129. death isn't something that

  130. you're going to live forever,

  131. live forever,

  132. live forever.

  133. Dang, you made a mistake.

  134. You know,

  135. it's not like

  136. you live forever,

  137. live forever,

  138. live forever,

  139. you know,

  140. you eat the wrong food,

  141. now you're going to die.

  142. No.

  143. From the moment you're a zygote,

  144. the moment you become you,

  145. you're also going to die.

  146. It's actually empirically true.

  147. There's,

  148. you might notice that there's

  149. three dozen roses

  150. at the front of the church,

  151. and they're here today

  152. as a symbol

  153. or as a sort of an illustration.

  154. After the service,

  155. I invite every adult

  156. in the room

  157. who wants one

  158. to take a rose.

  159. You bring it home,

  160. it's just our gift to you this morning.

  161. But here's the thing.

  162. This, in a sense,

  163. is a symbol

  164. and a metaphor

  165. and image

  166. of what every human being

  167. here is in the room.

  168. This rose is beautiful,

  169. isn't it?

  170. I mean, many of us,

  171. some of us are as beautiful

  172. as the rose.

  173. All of us wish we could be

  174. as beautiful as the rose.

  175. But this rose

  176. is a cut flower.

  177. It's a cut flower.

  178. And the biblical message is

  179. that we were designed

  180. to be connected

  181. to God forever.

  182. But we've separated ourselves

  183. from God.

  184. We've, in a sense,

  185. cut ourselves off

  186. from the ground,

  187. from the source of nutrients,

  188. from ongoing life.

  189. And every human being

  190. that's born

  191. is born

  192. a cut rose.

  193. And, um,

  194. it must be true

  195. because I looked it up

  196. on the internet.

  197. Um,

  198. but once that rose is cut,

  199. you can't do anything.

  200. Like, it's,

  201. it's doomed.

  202. You can't reconnect it

  203. to a plant

  204. so that it'll live

  205. because it's a cut plant.

  206. And that's what the Bible

  207. is saying here.

  208. We are

  209. a cut flower.

  210. It gets worse.

  211. Look at the next text.

  212. It's the, uh,

  213. second part of verse 2.

  214. Chapter 2.

  215. So we began with

  216. chapter 2, verse 1.

  217. And you were dead

  218. in the transgressions

  219. and sins

  220. in which you once walked.

  221. Now the rest of the verse 2

  222. goes like this.

  223. Following the course

  224. of this world,

  225. following the prince

  226. of the power of the air,

  227. the spirit

  228. that is now at work

  229. in the sons

  230. of disobedience.

  231. And, um,

  232. it's saying something else.

  233. It's saying now,

  234. it's getting even deeper

  235. into our problem.

  236. By nature,

  237. you love acts of rebellion

  238. against the living God.

  239. See, that's,

  240. that's what the text

  241. is trying to say.

  242. Um,

  243. the first analogy

  244. is that we're all

  245. walking a life

  246. and the natural,

  247. the, the, the, the sense,

  248. the natural way

  249. we're bent

  250. is to, in a sense,

  251. be on the same side

  252. as any human being

  253. or any spiritual being

  254. that also rebels

  255. against God

  256. and desires

  257. to be a God themselves

  258. and chart their own path

  259. and their own way forward.

  260. And so,

  261. this image

  262. of the ruler

  263. of the spirit

  264. of the air

  265. is this,

  266. this image

  267. of,

  268. of demons,

  269. of hostile

  270. spiritual forces.

  271. And then the other one

  272. isn't a spirit thing.

  273. It's, it's saying that,

  274. in fact,

  275. if we think about it,

  276. human life is organized,

  277. not always in rebellion

  278. against God,

  279. but there's always

  280. a bit of a flavor

  281. of it

  282. against the presence

  283. of the living God.

  284. And that that's,

  285. in a sense,

  286. what animates

  287. social life

  288. and social institutions.

  289. That there's always

  290. just something in there

  291. which likes to be

  292. in rebellion

  293. against God.

  294. And that's the side

  295. that we naturally

  296. side with

  297. as human beings.

  298. Once again,

  299. this is actually

  300. offensive to us

  301. because we believe

  302. that we're basically good.

  303. But once again,

  304. it's actually

  305. empirically true

  306. if you think about it

  307. for a second.

  308. It's empirically true.

  309. I've used this analogy

  310. before.

  311. Some of you

  312. might remember it.

  313. But when you watch a movie

  314. or you read a story

  315. and in the movie

  316. or in the story

  317. it looks as if

  318. there's a perfect society,

  319. a perfect place,

  320. a utopia.

  321. What do we all

  322. instantly know?

  323. At root,

  324. there's something evil.

  325. That's what we all know.

  326. It's just obvious.

  327. Nobody goes and says,

  328. oh, look at that.

  329. This is a betrayal

  330. of a perfect society,

  331. a perfect world.

  332. No.

  333. We know there's

  334. something going on.

  335. We know there's

  336. some powerful force

  337. manipulating people.

  338. We know that somehow

  339. or another

  340. they might be food.

  341. We know that something

  342. else is going on.

  343. We instinctively

  344. both long for utopias

  345. and often many people

  346. are suckers for them.

  347. But at the same time

  348. when we see it

  349. very plainly put forward,

  350. we know,

  351. we know,

  352. we know,

  353. we know,

  354. we know

  355. that there's something

  356. not right going on there.

  357. See,

  358. it's a very interesting thing

  359. that in this text,

  360. on one hand,

  361. when we think about it

  362. and reflect upon it,

  363. it offends us.

  364. On the other hand,

  365. if we actually think about it

  366. a bit more,

  367. we realize that what offends us

  368. is that which is actually

  369. empirically known

  370. to be true.

  371. And it gets worse.

  372. Look at verse 3,

  373. chapter 2,

  374. verse 3.

  375. So it just said

  376. how we follow

  377. basically the devil

  378. and we follow up

  379. and we naturally

  380. are aligned

  381. with the spirit

  382. that is work in society.

  383. In verse 3,

  384. among whom

  385. we all once lived

  386. in the passions,

  387. or another way to put it

  388. would be lusts,

  389. of our flesh.

  390. That doesn't mean

  391. our body.

  392. it means that there's

  393. a part of us

  394. that likes to rebel

  395. against God,

  396. carrying out the desires

  397. of the body

  398. and the mind

  399. and we're by nature

  400. children of wrath

  401. like the rest

  402. of the human race.

  403. By nature,

  404. children of wrath

  405. like the rest

  406. of the human race.

  407. You know,

  408. once again,

  409. this is something

  410. which is empirically

  411. true.

  412. if we think about it.

  413. Can you just imagine

  414. for a second

  415. if one of your friends

  416. or one of your nephews

  417. or your own child

  418. had a baby

  419. and as they're holding

  420. the baby

  421. and looking at it

  422. and if they were

  423. to say to you,

  424. do you know,

  425. do you think

  426. this will be

  427. the first child

  428. that never does

  429. anything wrong

  430. in their entire life?

  431. I think this is the child.

  432. I think this child,

  433. just like my previous one,

  434. will never,

  435. ever,

  436. ever,

  437. ever,

  438. ever,

  439. ever,

  440. ever,

  441. do anything wrong

  442. and if you watch

  443. that person say that,

  444. you'd think they were joking.

  445. If it became obvious

  446. that they were serious,

  447. you'd go,

  448. that's what you do,

  449. isn't it?

  450. Oh,

  451. good grief.

  452. How stupid

  453. is this person?

  454. How,

  455. isn't that what we all do?

  456. Like empirically,

  457. that's what we do.

  458. Nobody believes that

  459. even though we also

  460. at the same time

  461. believe that we're all

  462. basically fundamentally good.

  463. Like why is it

  464. that that goes on

  465. within us?

  466. Why are we offended

  467. by the word of God?

  468. You see,

  469. by nature,

  470. do I have the right thing?

  471. Here's my,

  472. here's my third point.

  473. By nature,

  474. with middle finger

  475. raised at him,

  476. you stay the course

  477. away from the living God.

  478. I tried to pick

  479. a very graphic image.

  480. This description covers

  481. the religious

  482. and the irreligious.

  483. It covers the spiritual

  484. and those who want to have

  485. nothing to do with spirituality.

  486. It covers me and you.

  487. It covers Bill Gates

  488. and it covers

  489. the most broken

  490. street person

  491. that you could ever meet.

  492. And why does the text say wrath

  493. but I don't use wrath

  494. in my text?

  495. Well,

  496. if you think about it

  497. for a second,

  498. imagine that you did

  499. come across somebody

  500. that,

  501. they're really,

  502. a really great person.

  503. Let's say you,

  504. you grew up with somebody

  505. and,

  506. okay,

  507. your mom wasn't very good.

  508. I don't know,

  509. your mom was terrible

  510. and this person's mom

  511. was fantastic.

  512. Like,

  513. just fantastic.

  514. You know,

  515. she made cookies,

  516. she made your lunch,

  517. she was a good listener,

  518. she was always kind,

  519. she always gave you

  520. good advice,

  521. she was all,

  522. she was just great.

  523. In fact,

  524. you and all your friends

  525. would say,

  526. I wish that mom,

  527. I wish your mom

  528. was my mom.

  529. Like,

  530. you have such a great mom.

  531. But then,

  532. if you have this person

  533. who,

  534. you know,

  535. humanly speaking,

  536. is just a spectacular mom,

  537. but all of the time,

  538. your friend,

  539. we'll call him Bob,

  540. every time Bob

  541. is at his mom's,

  542. where his mom wants

  543. to come and talk to Bob,

  544. Bob yells,

  545. Bob turns his back on her,

  546. he hangs up on her,

  547. he never answers her texts.

  548. When she starts to speak to him

  549. or give him a gift,

  550. he rolls his eyes,

  551. he just,

  552. it just visually shows

  553. he doesn't want to have

  554. anything to do with her,

  555. that doesn't like her,

  556. that he hates her,

  557. that he just wants

  558. to live his own life

  559. and have her nowhere.

  560. And everybody else,

  561. all of Bob's friends

  562. is saying,

  563. your mom is great.

  564. Like,

  565. she just,

  566. she just wants to,

  567. she's just great.

  568. Like,

  569. what's going on?

  570. Why are you always

  571. giving her the finger?

  572. The finger.

  573. And then finally,

  574. the mom says,

  575. gets mad at Bob,

  576. and then Bob goes around

  577. everywhere.

  578. Why on earth

  579. is my mom mad at me?

  580. That's why I don't like my mom.

  581. She's always getting mad at me.

  582. And what will you say to Bob?

  583. You'll say,

  584. but Bob,

  585. like,

  586. your mom's unbelievably patient

  587. with you.

  588. You're basically giving her

  589. the finger all the time.

  590. And she turns the other cheek.

  591. Why are you surprised

  592. that she's mad at you?

  593. That's what's going on

  594. in the text.

  595. God is unfailingly good.

  596. He's unfailingly kind.

  597. He's unfailingly loving.

  598. Unfailingly merciful.

  599. And we don't want him

  600. in our lives

  601. unless we're stuck.

  602. And then we'd like him

  603. to be like a genie

  604. that we rub the bottle,

  605. we make our wish,

  606. he fixes the problem,

  607. then he goes back in the bottle

  608. and lets me live

  609. my own life

  610. on my terms.

  611. And whether that is

  612. saying the rosary

  613. and going to church,

  614. whether it's

  615. doing yoga,

  616. you know,

  617. whether it's just

  618. singing praise courses

  619. or something like that

  620. just because it's

  621. something spiritual

  622. that we happen to like,

  623. whether it's drinking

  624. Jack Daniels,

  625. whatever it is,

  626. it can have a religious form

  627. and irreligious form.

  628. It can have a secular form

  629. and a spiritual form.

  630. But bottom line

  631. is what we don't want

  632. is we want what we want

  633. when we want it

  634. in the way that we want it.

  635. And we don't want God

  636. getting in there,

  637. the true and living God

  638. messing things up.

  639. Thank you very much.

  640. Finger extended

  641. back to him.

  642. That is what we are

  643. by nature.

  644. It is what we are

  645. by nature.

  646. This is the red pill.

  647. Religion or spirituality

  648. that says

  649. you just follow these rules

  650. and then God will

  651. be your God

  652. and he'll accept you.

  653. How does that work?

  654. Well, it works exactly the same

  655. as going into the funeral home

  656. and speaking to all the bodies

  657. in the caskets

  658. and say just start

  659. improving your diet

  660. and you will live longer.

  661. How does that work?

  662. It doesn't work at all.

  663. This is very, very, very,

  664. very tough and bad news.

  665. It's very counter-cultural

  666. bad news.

  667. But I would suggest

  668. it's the red pill.

  669. It's the red pill.

  670. But

  671. it reveals to us

  672. that we need

  673. a true and greater Morpheus.

  674. We need a true

  675. and greater Neo.

  676. It reveals to us

  677. that you are not the hero

  678. that you have been waiting for.

  679. You are not the hero

  680. the world has been waiting for.

  681. There is nothing

  682. in this world

  683. that is the hero

  684. that you have been waiting for.

  685. This is me.

  686. This is us.

  687. But this very, very stark

  688. bad news

  689. is a way to introduce

  690. spectacular good news.

  691. Look at how

  692. the very next verse begins.

  693. Notice how it begins

  694. with the word

  695. but.

  696. It's going to tell us

  697. that there is a true

  698. and greater hero.

  699. That there is, in fact,

  700. a longing

  701. and a dream

  702. made flesh.

  703. Let's read it.

  704. But God,

  705. this is where my translation

  706. is just going to be

  707. a little bit different

  708. to bring out

  709. the original force

  710. of the original language.

  711. But God,

  712. being rich in mercy

  713. because of the great love

  714. with which he loved us.

  715. This is verse 4.

  716. But God,

  717. being rich in mercy

  718. because of the great love

  719. with which he loved us,

  720. even when we were dead

  721. in our transgressions,

  722. co-made us alive

  723. with Christ.

  724. By grace,

  725. you have been saved.

  726. And co-raised us

  727. with him.

  728. And co-seated us

  729. with him

  730. in the heavenly places

  731. in Christ Jesus.

  732. Look at verse 4 again.

  733. Verse 4 goes,

  734. but God,

  735. being rich in mercy

  736. because of the great love

  737. with which he loved us.

  738. Here's the beginning

  739. of the good news.

  740. God is rich in mercy

  741. and he's rich in love.

  742. Our hope

  743. doesn't flow

  744. from anything

  745. within ourselves

  746. or anything

  747. within our world.

  748. Our hope

  749. has to come

  750. from God

  751. being rich in mercy

  752. and rich in love.

  753. Our hope

  754. comes in a sense

  755. from outside of the world

  756. but present in the world.

  757. There might be

  758. some of you here

  759. this morning

  760. who are feeling

  761. deeply unloved.

  762. What this Bible text

  763. is telling you,

  764. this isn't just me

  765. having a Maya Angelou moment.

  766. What the text

  767. is telling you

  768. is there has never

  769. been a time

  770. in your life

  771. that you have been unloved.

  772. Never.

  773. And if you're sitting here

  774. right now feeling unloved,

  775. you are not unloved.

  776. There is a God

  777. who does exist

  778. who right now

  779. loves you

  780. and has always loved you.

  781. And whatever good news

  782. is going to emerge

  783. is going to originate

  784. out of God

  785. who really does exist,

  786. the living God,

  787. the true and living God.

  788. It is going to come

  789. not out of the fact

  790. that you were able

  791. to wink

  792. or accomplish something

  793. or learn how to say

  794. the rosary

  795. or learn how to be good

  796. or learn how to do yoga

  797. or learn how to do

  798. or, you know,

  799. do all the Islamic prayers

  800. or just be very successful

  801. in life.

  802. Whatever hope you have

  803. is not going to emerge

  804. out of anything you do

  805. or anything you can accomplish.

  806. It's going to emerge

  807. out of God himself

  808. being unfailingly loving

  809. and unfailingly merciful.

  810. That is where hope

  811. is going to emerge out of.

  812. But you might say,

  813. but how can he help

  814. a cut flower?

  815. How can he help

  816. a cut rose?

  817. Look at what he says

  818. in verse 5 and 6.

  819. Look at what he says there

  820. again.

  821. Remember, he loves us.

  822. He loves us not

  823. when we've accomplished things,

  824. but he loves us,

  825. verse 5,

  826. even when we were dead

  827. in our transgressions.

  828. And what does he do?

  829. He co-made us alive

  830. with Christ.

  831. By grace,

  832. you have been saved.

  833. And co-raised us with him.

  834. And co-seated us with him

  835. in the heavenly places

  836. in Christ Jesus.

  837. Co-made, co-raised, co-seated.

  838. Here's what the text

  839. is trying to bring out.

  840. The living God,

  841. united you to Jesus,

  842. and in him,

  843. you have been co-made alive,

  844. co-raised,

  845. and co-seated

  846. in the highest heaven.

  847. You see, what happens is

  848. Jesus is described

  849. as Emmanuel,

  850. as God with us.

  851. God, the Son of God,

  852. sets aside his glory

  853. and his splendor

  854. and his divine prerogatives

  855. in appearance as God.

  856. And remaining God

  857. comes and is born

  858. amongst us

  859. and lives amongst us.

  860. We have a hard time

  861. thinking about that.

  862. Just think a little bit more

  863. about being a zygote.

  864. Remember I told you

  865. that if you see me,

  866. you're seeing my grandfather's nose.

  867. You're seeing a true nose.

  868. See my hairline?

  869. That's my grandfather's hairline.

  870. You know,

  871. I have asthma.

  872. That's my mom's asthma.

  873. You know,

  874. my eyesight

  875. didn't get that from my mom,

  876. got that from my dad.

  877. You know,

  878. you can go on.

  879. Then there's other things

  880. that people wonder

  881. where it comes from.

  882. That's what happens

  883. when you just, you know,

  884. bang all those things together,

  885. the DNA of two people

  886. into a blender.

  887. But here's the point.

  888. If you went and saw

  889. a baby picture of me at one,

  890. you might say,

  891. look at that,

  892. that's George.

  893. I can look at that.

  894. I can see his nose

  895. is cuter then,

  896. but that's George.

  897. I can tell from his eyes

  898. just the way he looks, right?

  899. But you look at a zygote,

  900. if there was able

  901. to go back in time

  902. and there was able

  903. to be a camera

  904. that could take a picture

  905. of you as a zygote,

  906. you don't look like that at all.

  907. Zygots don't have noses.

  908. But everything that makes you you

  909. is right there

  910. in that second,

  911. that moment

  912. when you become a zygote,

  913. when you become you.

  914. Doesn't look like you.

  915. Doesn't have your power.

  916. Doesn't have your intellect.

  917. Doesn't have your charm.

  918. Doesn't have your wit.

  919. But it's you

  920. with nothing left.

  921. It's you.

  922. And if we understand that

  923. as a human level,

  924. then we understand

  925. that God does something

  926. the very same thing

  927. with his son.

  928. That God,

  929. the son of God,

  930. sets aside his divine prerogatives,

  931. his appearance as God,

  932. but remaining still

  933. by nature,

  934. God takes into himself

  935. our human nature

  936. and lives

  937. and walks amongst us.

  938. And he lives a life

  939. where he is not

  940. in rebellion against God.

  941. He is not

  942. in separation from God.

  943. He is in complete

  944. harmony and obedience

  945. to God

  946. in love of God

  947. and in love of us.

  948. He came and dwelt among us

  949. out of love.

  950. He dwelt among us.

  951. And in time

  952. and in history,

  953. he is betrayed.

  954. He is condemned

  955. and he dies upon the cross

  956. and there is a charge

  957. put about him

  958. as he dies on the cross.

  959. And his death

  960. upon the cross

  961. happens in history

  962. just as he spends

  963. three days in the grave

  964. and then on the third day,

  965. the grave is empty.

  966. The body is gone.

  967. He is risen.

  968. He has defeated death

  969. and he appears

  970. to prove

  971. that he is physically alive

  972. and has defeated death

  973. in a wide range

  974. of resurrection appearances

  975. over 40 days

  976. in many different locations

  977. to very, very many

  978. different people

  979. privately in groups,

  980. different locations.

  981. He is alive.

  982. But that death

  983. upon the cross

  984. happened in history.

  985. But because

  986. he is not just

  987. the man,

  988. Jesus Christ,

  989. but also God,

  990. the Son of God

  991. made flesh,

  992. his death

  993. upon the cross

  994. is not just

  995. something that happens

  996. in time,

  997. but something that happens

  998. outside of time

  999. in eternity.

  1000. Outside of time,

  1001. which means

  1002. it can be present

  1003. and available

  1004. at any time

  1005. to any person.

  1006. And what this text

  1007. is saying

  1008. so powerfully

  1009. is this.

  1010. God,

  1011. by the Holy Spirit,

1012. moves and works in you.

  1013. We'll see this

  1014. in a moment,

  1015. by which

  1016. you come to realize

  1017. that God the Father

  1018. is calling to you

1019. in your state of rebellion

  1020. and calling to you

1021. in your state of death

  1022. and saying,

  1023. come to me.

1024. I long to have you

  1025. as mine.

  1026. And as you,

  1027. with the help

  1028. of the Holy Spirit,

  1029. say, yes,

  1030. Jesus,

  1031. be my Savior

  1032. and Lord.

  1033. What actually happens

  1034. is that,

  1035. is as if

  1036. God,

  1037. the Son of God,

  1038. Jesus,

  1039. who has died

  1040. upon the cross

  1041. to take your place,

  1042. He has identified

  1043. so completely

  1044. and utterly

  1045. with you

  1046. and He is

  1047. your substitute,

  1048. He is your act

  1049. of exchange

  1050. and He comes

  1051. and He unites

  1052. with you,

  1053. with you.

  1054. And so,

  1055. by this profound

  1056. act of identification,

  1057. substitution,

  1058. and exchange

  1059. that both

  1060. happened in history

  1061. but because

  1062. He is God,

  1063. the Son of God

  1064. is also outside

  1065. of history,

  1066. that even though

  1067. I live

  1068. 1900,

  1069. 22,000

  1070. some years

  1071. after He died

1072. and rose from the dead

  1073. but because

  1074. it's outside of time

1075. when I put my faith

  1076. and trust in Jesus,

  1077. God,

  1078. Jesus,

  1079. embraces me

  1080. and unites with me

1081. so that on the cross

  1082. He died with me

1083. and I died with Him.

  1084. And on Easter Sunday

1085. He is still so united

  1086. with me

  1087. and is so united

  1088. with you

  1089. that He rose

  1090. from the dead

  1091. and you rose

  1092. from the dead.

  1093. and just as He

  1094. has ascended

  1095. into heaven

  1096. and is seated

  1097. at the right hand

  1098. of God,

  1099. so are you

  1100. because you are

  1101. united with Him.

  1102. Profound

  1103. act,

  1104. miracle

  1105. that only

  1106. God

  1107. can do

  1108. and He did it

  1109. for you

  1110. and for me.

  1111. It's all grace.

  1112. All grace.

  1113. This image

  1114. of the seated

  1115. in a sense

  1116. that's already true

  1117. but in another sense

  1118. it's not true.

1119. I live in the already

  1120. not yet

  1121. because obviously

  1122. I'm not sitting there

  1123. right now.

  1124. But I wonder

  1125. just 15 years ago

1126. I tried to do the math

  1127. 15 years ago

  1128. there was a man

1129. that Louise and I knew

1130. and he wanted to do

  1131. a fundraiser

1132. at the National Arts Center

1133. and this is 15 years ago

  1134. we had a $500

  1135. a seat

  1136. $500 a plate meal.

  1137. $500

  1138. 15 years ago

  1139. I don't know what that is

  1140. like what's that

  1141. like that

  1142. $2,000

  1143. like going to a $2,000

  1144. a plate meal today.

1145. Let me just tell you

  1146. Louise and I

  1147. don't normally go

  1148. to meals like that.

1149. In fact we would never

1150. go to a meal like that.

1151. We wouldn't spend the money

1152. we don't have the money

  1153. but this fellow

  1154. we'll call him Bob

1155. he said I'd like you

  1156. to come to this

  1157. and we were actually

  1158. a bit nervous

  1159. because I don't know

  1160. like how exactly

  1161. like we just think

  1162. we don't hang out

1163. with a crowd like that

  1164. like how do you

  1165. hold the wine glass

1166. how do you do this

1167. how do you do that

  1168. we don't really have

  1169. the clothes for it

  1170. we got some clothes

1171. not nearly at their level

  1172. or anything like that

  1173. we go to this

  1174. but here's the thing

  1175. we go there

  1176. we know nobody

  1177. we don't know people

  1178. who go to $2,000

  1179. a plate meals

1180. unless one of you folks

  1181. go to them

  1182. and I just don't realize

1183. you go to meals like that

1184. then I guess I do know somebody

1185. and it would have been

  1186. a bit of a shock

  1187. you know

1188. almost as big of a shock

  1189. as the first time

1190. I ever went to jail

  1191. the very first time

1192. I ever went to jail

  1193. to visit somebody

  1194. to my shock

  1195. and another person's

  1196. was another person

  1197. from my church

  1198. he was really shocked

1199. when I walked in the door

1200. and I was pretty shocked

  1201. to see him

  1202. and I would be

  1203. almost as shocked

  1204. if I walked into

  1205. a $2,000 plate meal

1206. and one of you were there

  1207. I'd go wow

  1208. but here's the thing

  1209. here's the thing

  1210. about the co-seated

  1211. right

1212. Bob paid for the plates

1213. Bob paid for Louise and me

1214. he gave us the tickets

  1215. and what's more

  1216. he also said

  1217. don't worry about

  1218. where you're sitting

  1219. you're sitting

  1220. at the head table

  1221. with me

1222. we didn't have to find our seat

  1223. and we went into

  1224. that reception

  1225. what did we know

  1226. we'd be sitting

  1227. with

1228. actually I'll say his name

  1229. he's with the Lord

1230. we were sitting with Tom

  1231. as his guests

  1232. at the head table

  1233. united with Christ

  1234. that is you

1235. that is what awaits you

  1236. when you die

  1237. and it's no longer

  1238. the already

  1239. not yet

  1240. it is the already

  1241. you feel unloved

  1242. you feel no hope

  1243. you feel rejected

1244. listen to what God says

1245. listen to what the text

  1246. of scripture continues

  1247. to teach

  1248. look at verses

  1249. 7 through 9

  1250. remember he said

1251. he seated us with Christ

  1252. in the heavenly places

  1253. verse 7

1254. so that in the coming ages

1255. why does God do this

1256. why does God unite us

  1257. with Jesus

1258. in the power of the Holy Spirit

1259. why does he do this miracle

  1260. within us

  1261. that we cannot do

  1262. by our own power

1263. so that in the coming ages

1264. any age that might come

  1265. he might show

  1266. the immeasurable riches

  1267. of his grace

  1268. in kindness

  1269. toward us

  1270. toward us

  1271. in Christ

  1272. Jesus

1273. look at that verse again

1274. so that in the coming ages

1275. any age that you will face

  1276. he might show

  1277. the immeasurable riches

  1278. of his grace

  1279. and kindness

  1280. towards us

  1281. in Christ

  1282. Jesus

  1283. and it continues

1284. he just wants to drive

  1285. the point home

  1286. for by grace

  1287. you have been saved

  1288. through faith

  1289. and this is not

  1290. your own doing

1291. it is the gift of God

1292. not a result of works

  1293. so that no one

  1294. may boast

1295. look how he brings it home

  1296. he reminds us again

  1297. how has this happened

  1298. has it happened

  1299. because George is white

  1300. has it happened

  1301. because he's well educated

  1302. has it happened

  1303. because he's a Canadian

  1304. does it happen

  1305. because he's a priest

  1306. no

  1307. by grace

  1308. I have been saved

  1309. by grace

  1310. you are saved

  1311. saved means

  1312. we were lost

  1313. by grace

  1314. you have been saved

  1315. how does this happen

  1316. only by faith

  1317. only by accepting

  1318. only by accepting

  1319. what God

  1320. has completely

  1321. and utterly

  1322. done for you

  1323. with nothing else

  1324. it isn't

1325. you have to be good

1326. until you can have faith

  1327. it isn't

1328. you have to go to church

  1329. before you have faith

  1330. it isn't

1331. you have to become successful

  1332. it isn't

1333. you have to become married

1334. it doesn't have to have children

1335. it doesn't have to have

  1336. your sexuality dealt with

  1337. or anything like that

1338. it has nothing to do

1339. with what you have to do

1340. or what you can accomplish

  1341. because

  1342. you are

  1343. a cut rose

  1344. and so am I

  1345. so was I

  1346. you are saved

  1347. by God's action

  1348. received by faith

1349. and to make it clear

1350. it's not your own doing

  1351. is it become

  1352. because I've worked hard

1353. and it's like my wages

  1354. no

1355. it is the gift of God

  1356. to remind us again

1357. not a result of works

  1358. why

  1359. so no one

  1360. no one

  1361. no one

  1362. may boast

  1363. look at me

1364. look how successful I am

  1365. look at me

1366. I can say the liturgy

  1367. really well

1368. I can sing praises well

  1369. I know bible verses

  1370. I have things memorized

  1371. no boasting

  1372. none

  1373. it is a foolish

  1374. delusion

  1375. to boast

  1376. before the Lord

  1377. it is wisdom

  1378. to learn

  1379. to humbly boast

  1380. in

  1381. the Lord

  1382. there is an obvious

  1383. problem

  1384. of proud Christians

1385. of which I am one

  1386. one of the things

  1387. for us to take

  1388. from this

  1389. when we

  1390. get bent out

  1391. of shape

  1392. because of our pride

  1393. it is

  1394. all grace

  1395. it is all

  1396. a gift

1397. so it is a foolish

  1398. delusion

  1399. to boast

  1400. about anything

  1401. that I have done

  1402. when the Lord

  1403. is present

  1404. it is wisdom

  1405. to learn

  1406. to humbly

  1407. boast

  1408. in him

  1409. it is all

  1410. his doing

  1411. it is none

  1412. of mine

  1413. we will just

  1414. finish the text

  1415. in verse

  1416. 10

  1417. oh by the way

  1418. just one other

  1419. thing here

  1420. just

  1421. almost finished

  1422. you see one of

  1423. the things here

  1424. which is so important

  1425. this is just like

  1426. a bit of a time

  1427. thing

  1428. for a Christian

  1429. we need to get

  1430. our identity

  1431. from this text

  1432. and not

  1433. from nature

  1434. I'm not a white

  1435. Christian

  1436. there's no black

  1437. Christians

  1438. there's no white

  1439. Christians

  1440. there's no gay

  1441. Christians

  1442. there's no heterosexual

  1443. Christians

  1444. if you're a Christian

  1445. your identity

  1446. comes from Christ

  1447. not from your nature

  1448. you're not a conservative

  1449. Christian

  1450. you're not a liberal

  1451. Christian

  1452. if you're a Christian

  1453. your identity

  1454. my identity

  1455. has to come

  1456. not from nature

1457. but from this new reality

  1458. that God

  1459. has won for me

  1460. and given me

  1461. in Christ

1462. just bringing it to a close

1463. did I put verse 10 up there

  1464. no I haven't

1465. let's put it up here

1466. just to bring it to a close

1467. how shall we then live

  1468. this is really interesting

1469. how shall we then live

1470. if this is all true

  1471. does this mean

  1472. that we've been raised

  1473. and co-seated with Christ

  1474. so we rule

  1475. so that we think

  1476. we're better than others

  1477. so that we become

  1478. the elite

  1479. would the true

  1480. Christian

  1481. would the true

  1482. best society

  1483. be one

  1484. where only Christians

  1485. are elected

1486. so that we can have power

  1487. because we are

  1488. the elite

  1489. no

  1490. no

  1491. look at verse 10

  1492. for we are

  1493. his workmanship

  1494. created in Christ Jesus

  1495. for good works

  1496. which God prepared

  1497. beforehand

1498. that we should walk in

  1499. not that we rule

1500. but that as the gospel

  1501. grabs us

  1502. as it becomes

1503. the way that we understand

  1504. our identity

  1505. as it becomes

1506. the place on which we stand

  1507. the air with which

  1508. we breathe

1509. the food with which we eat

1510. the covering over our head

1511. the center of our identity

  1512. of who we are

1513. it starts to push us

  1514. and ground us

  1515. to show compassion

  1516. to be generous

  1517. to forgive

  1518. to seek to serve

1519. to seek the common good

  1520. to not care

  1521. if we rule

  1522. as we seek

  1523. the common good

  1524. to be faithful

  1525. in our marriages

  1526. to treat people

  1527. with dignity

  1528. and respect

  1529. and integrity

  1530. as the gospel

  1531. grips us

  1532. as it grounds us

  1533. as we breathe it

  1534. as we eat it

  1535. as it surrounds us

  1536. as it covers us

1537. as we live in it

  1538. as we see

  1539. that the story

  1540. of our lives

  1541. is the story

  1542. of the gospel

  1543. as that grounds us

  1544. then we learn

  1545. to face adversity

  1546. in a different way

1547. we learn to show compassion

  1548. we learn to seek

  1549. the good

  1550. of our city

  1551. and the good

  1552. of our workplace

  1553. and the good

  1554. of the world

1555. we learn to be generous

1556. we learn to be generous

1557. we learn to be generous

1558. just want to wrap it all up

  1559. with a challenge

  1560. here's the first one

  1561. if you are here

1562. and you have not yet

  1563. given your life

  1564. to Jesus

  1565. the Bible

  1566. is not proposing

  1567. an hypothesis

  1568. the living God

  1569. is making a proposal

  1570. to you

  1571. this morning

  1572. he's making a proposal

  1573. to you

  1574. and here's what

  1575. he's proposing

  1576. to you

  1577. it's a proposal

  1578. will you let me

  1579. come to you

  1580. with grace and mercy

  1581. unite you with Christ

  1582. and make you alive

  1583. the Bible here

  1584. isn't something

  1585. that we can win

  1586. debates with Dawkins

  1587. or we can win

  1588. debates with a Hindu

  1589. or a Muslim

  1590. it's not about that

  1591. if the Bible

  1592. and the gospel

  1593. doesn't grip us

  1594. so we have compassion

  1595. and love

  1596. for real people

  1597. if it just becomes

  1598. debating points

  1599. we haven't actually

  1600. heard it

  1601. God himself

  1602. this morning

  1603. if you have not

  1604. given your life

  1605. to Christ

  1606. God himself

  1607. is saying to you

  1608. will you let me

  1609. come to you

  1610. with grace and mercy

  1611. will you let me

  1612. unite you with Christ

  1613. will you let me

  1614. make you alive

  1615. for those of us

  1616. who are in Christ

  1617. the Bible

  1618. is not proposing

  1619. an hypothesis

  1620. Jesus is asking you

  1621. and he's asking me

  1622. have you forgotten

  1623. that you are

  1624. united to me

  1625. that you have

  1626. been made alive

  1627. raised and seated

  1628. with me

  1629. it's the proposition

  1630. that Jesus is saying

1631. to each one of us

  1632. this morning

  1633. have you forgotten

  1634. have you forgotten

  1635. that you are united

  1636. with me

  1637. have you forgotten

  1638. that you've been

  1639. made alive with me

  1640. have you forgotten

  1641. that you've been

  1642. raised with me

  1643. have you forgotten

  1644. that you're co-seated

  1645. with me

  1646. in the high heavens

1647. is this truth becoming your identity

1648. in the way you see the world

1649. in the way you understand who you are

1650. is this helping you understand

1651. your failures and your successes

1652. your trials and your successes

  1653. and your tribulations

  1654. have you forgotten this

  1655. please stand

  1656. if you are here

  1657. and you do not

1658. have not given your life to Christ

1659. that proposal was very serious

  1660. that's what

  1661. that's what God's word

  1662. is saying to you

  1663. not George

1664. God's word is saying to you

1665. and I encourage you to take the moment

1666. to ignore the rest of my words

1667. and just call out to Jesus

  1668. and say yes

1669. I would like to accept that proposal

1670. I'd like to have Jesus united with me

  1671. I would like that

  1672. I say yes

1673. take the time to do it

1674. like just do it now

1675. but for the rest of us

1676. and then after you've said that prayer

  1677. you join with this

  1678. Father

  1679. thank you that

1680. that your word isn't just

1681. so we can be clever in arguments

  1682. or witty in conversation

  1683. but that Father

1684. you make this proposal to us

  1685. that you

  1686. that Jesus himself

  1687. is asking us

  1688. if we remember

1689. who we are in him

1690. and what he has done for us

  1691. and so Father

1692. you know how easy it is

  1693. for us to forget

1694. you know how easy it is

1695. for us to get sidetracked

1696. and still you love us

1697. and we thank you Father

  1698. for this time

  1699. when your words

  1700. directly speak to us

  1701. and Father

1702. we ask that you help us

  1703. to remember

1704. and that you help us

1705. to live out of this

  1706. true and real identity

1707. that has been one in history

1708. and is true for all eternity

  1709. for every age

  1710. that we might face

  1711. that we might live

  1712. out of this identity

  1713. in Christ

  1714. knowing we are united

  1715. with him

  1716. made alive

  1717. co-made alive

  1718. with him

  1719. co-raised with him

  1720. and will one day

  1721. see face to face

1722. what is now only true

  1723. in longing and hoping

1724. that we will be seated with him

1725. that that is the final word

  1726. about us

  1727. and help us Father

  1728. to live generous

  1729. compassionate

  1730. forgiving

  1731. lives

  1732. ground in that truth

1733. and all God's people said

  1734. Amen
