  1. The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah, king of Judah,

  2. which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.

  3. At that time, the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem,

  4. and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard that was in the palace of the king of Judah.

  5. Verse 6, Jeremiah said,

  6. The word of the Lord came to me. Behold, Hanamo, the son of Shalom, your uncle, will come to you and say,

  7. By my field that is in Anathoth, for the right of redemption by purchase is yours.

  8. Then Hanamo, my cousin, came to me in the court of the guard in accordance with the word of the Lord and said to me,

  9. Buy my field that is at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is yours.

  10. Buy it for yourself.

  11. Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.

  12. And I bought the field at Anathoth from Hanamo, my cousin, and weighed out the money to him, seventeen shekels of silver.

  13. I signed the deed, sealed it, got witnesses, and weighed the money on scales.

  14. Then I took the sealed deed of purchase, containing the terms and conditions and the open copy.

  15. And I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch, the son of Neriah, son of Masaiah, in the presence of Hanamo, my cousin,

  16. in the presence of the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase,

  17. and in the presence of all the Judeans who were sitting in the court of the guard.

  18. I charged Baruch in their presence, saying,

  19. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,

  20. Take these deeds, both the sealed deed of purchase and this open deed,

  21. and put them in an earthenware vessel, that they may last long for a long time.

  22. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,

  23. Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be bought in this land.

  24. After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch, the son of Neriah,

  25. I prayed to the Lord, saying,

  26. Ah, Lord God, it is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm.

  27. Nothing is too hard for you.

  28. You show steadfast love to thousands,

  29. but you repay the guilt of fathers to their children after them.

  30. O great and mighty God, whose name is the Lord of hosts,

  31. great in counsel and mighty in deed,

  32. whose eyes are open to all the ways of the children of man,

  33. rewarding each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.

  34. You have shown signs and wonders in the land of Egypt,

  35. and to this day in Israel and among all mankind,

  36. and have made a name for yourself as at this day.

  37. You brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders,

  38. with a strong hand and outstretched arm,

  39. and with great terror.

  40. And you gave them this land,

  41. which you swore to their fathers to give them,

  42. a land flowing with milk and honey.

  43. And they entered and took possession.

  44. But they did not obey your voice or walk in your law.

  45. They did nothing of all you commanded them to do.

  46. Therefore you have made all this disaster come upon them.

  47. Behold, the siege mounds have come up to the city to take it.

  48. And because of sword and famine and pestilence,

  49. the city is given into the hands of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it.

  50. What you spoke has come to pass,

  51. and behold, you see it.

  52. Yet you, O Lord God, have said to me,

  53. Buy the field for money and get witnesses,

  54. though the city is given into the hands of the Chaldeans.

  55. The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.

  56. Behold, I am the Lord,

  57. the God of all flesh,

  58. is anything too hard for me?

  59. Now therefore, thus says the Lord,

  60. the God of Israel,

  61. concerning this city of which you say,

  62. It is given into the land of the king of Babylon

  63. by sword, by famine, and by pestilence.

  64. Behold, I will gather them from all the countries

  65. to which I drove them in my anger

  66. and my wrath and in great indignation.

  67. I will bring them back to this place

  68. and I will make them dwell in safety.

  69. And they shall be my people

  70. and I will be their God.

  71. I will give them one heart

  72. and one way

  73. that they may fear me forever

  74. for their own good

  75. and the good of their children after me,

  76. after them.

  77. I will make with them

  78. an everlasting covenant

  79. that I will not turn away

  80. from doing good to them.

  81. And I will put the fear of me

  82. in their hearts

  83. that they may not turn from me.

  84. I will rejoice in doing them good.

  85. I will plant them in this land

  86. in faithfulness

  87. with all my heart

  88. and all my soul.

  89. For thus says the Lord,

  90. Just as I have brought all this great disaster

  91. upon this people,

  92. so I will bring upon them

  93. all the good that I promised them.

  94. Fields shall be bought in this land

  95. of which you are saying,

  96. It is desolation.

  97. Without man or beast,

  98. it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

  99. Fields shall be bought for money

  100. and deeds shall be signed

  101. and sealed and witnessed.

  102. In the land of Benjamin,

  103. in the places about Jerusalem,

  104. and in the cities of Judah,

  105. in the cities of the hill country,

  106. in the cities of Shefella,

  107. and in the cities of the Negev.

  108. And I will restore their fortunes,

  109. declares the Lord.

  110. This is the word of God.

  111. Amen.

  112. Great. Thanks, Jeremy.

  113. So, we're going to take a little bit of a break

  114. this morning from what we've been looking at

  115. over the last few weeks

  116. with the Missional Justice series,

  117. so that we can kind of come back together

  118. and do that really well

  119. when we're gathering together.

  120. So, just over these next couple of weeks,

  121. we're going to have a little look

  122. at a couple of passages

  123. to really kind of refocus our minds

  124. and our hearts at this time.

  125. And so, today,

  126. we're going to look at this passage

  127. from Jeremiah 32,

  128. which actually we were just looking at

  129. in our staff retreat

  130. just a few days ago.

  131. And so, I want to give us

  132. a little breakdown

  133. of what is going on in this passage,

  134. how then Jeremiah prays

  135. in the context of what's going on

  136. in the situation,

  137. and then think about a few implications

  138. for us as a church.

  139. So, before we do that,

  140. let me just pray for us

  141. that God would really speak to us

  142. through His Word.

  143. Father, we just thank You

  144. that everything else may collapse

  145. everything else may fail,

  146. but You don't.

  147. Because You are the sovereign Lord.

  148. You're the one who has been in control

  149. from the beginning of history

  150. to the end of history.

  151. You're the one who holds our lives

  152. in Your hands.

  153. You're the one who enters into history

  154. to bring us and rescue us

  155. out of darkness

  156. and bring us into light.

  157. You're the one who knows us.

  158. You're the one who cares for us.

  159. You're the one who wants to bring

  160. Your Word to us even today.

  161. And Lord, we just pray

  162. that You would be with us

  163. as Your church.

  164. We pray that we would be

  165. the people that You've called us

  166. to be at this time.

  167. We pray where there is fear

  168. in our hearts, Lord.

  169. We pray You would be

  170. the Prince of Peace to us.

  171. We pray, Lord,

  172. where there is doubt and anxiety.

  173. We pray that You would come

  174. and reassure and rest our hearts in You.

  175. We pray where we're tempted

  176. to turn in on ourselves, Lord,

  177. that You would lift our eyes up to You

  178. and lift our eyes out

  179. to other people around us, Lord.

  180. Show us what it means

  181. to be a light at this time

  182. because of the great hope

  183. we have in You.

  184. And Father, we just pray

  185. for our city

  186. and for the world

  187. with everything that's going on

  188. at the moment.

  189. There's many people, Lord,

  190. who are going to be struggling,

  191. whether it's with jobs,

  192. with finances,

  193. with health.

  194. Lord, we pray for the medics, Lord.

  195. We pray for Graham,

  196. who's going to be going

  197. into the coronavirus wards.

  198. We pray, Lord,

  199. Your protection over him.

  200. We pray, Lord,

  201. for him and all the believers

  202. who are going into the city

  203. from our church

  204. and the churches around this city

  205. that we would be

  206. just an incredible hope

  207. for this city.

  208. We would bring Your light.

  209. We would bring Your joy.

  210. We would have this confidence

  211. which would cause others to ask

  212. what the hope that we have is.

  213. Lord, please work in this situation,

  214. we pray,

  215. because You want to get glory

  216. even when we have no idea

  217. what You're up to.

  218. So show us Your play.

  219. Show us Your plans.

  220. Speak to us this morning, I pray.

  221. In Jesus' mighty name.

  222. Amen.

  223. So the situation in Jeremiah 32 is this.

  224. It's desperate.

  225. The Babylonian army,

  226. the most powerful,

  227. the most fearsome army

  228. in the entire world,

  229. is besieging the city of Jerusalem.

  230. And they have been there for a while.

  231. And it's only a matter of time

  232. before the defenses come down

  233. and they rampage through

  234. and they destroy everything.

  235. Inside the city,

  236. if you can imagine a siege time,

  237. famine has hit.

  238. There's no food on the shelves any longer.

  239. And when famine hits,

  240. malnutrition starts to rise

  241. and disease starts to spread.

  242. And everyone inside the city

  243. will see the bodies lying on the streets

  244. of people who,

  245. one by one,

  246. are dying in the midst

  247. of this terrible situation.

  248. And in this,

  249. Jeremiah,

  250. who God has used to speak to the people,

  251. telling them again and again

  252. to turn back to God,

  253. who has prophesied

  254. the arrival of the Babylonians

  255. and the destruction of Jerusalem,

  256. he's been put in prison

  257. because he's been speaking God's word.

  258. And he cannot escape at all.

  259. So the situation is dire.

  260. It's terrible.

  261. But then in the midst of this,

  262. God gives Jeremiah

  263. this crazy command.

  264. He says to Jeremiah,

  265. buy a field.

  266. And his cousin then comes to him.

  267. And basically in the Old Testament,

  268. people wanted to keep property

  269. within the family

  270. for the inheritance.

  271. So he was either next in line

  272. or he was one of the people

  273. down the line

  274. who,

  275. this guy,

  276. cousin,

  277. who presumably

  278. is finding it difficult

  279. to make ends meet.

  280. He needs the money.

  281. So he comes to Jeremiah,

  282. buy this field.

  283. But this is the craziest investment ever

  284. because at that moment,

  285. property is worthless

  286. because the Babylonians

  287. are just about to overrun everything

  288. and take everything

  289. from themselves.

  290. And Jeremiah,

  291. at this time,

  292. even though this investment

  293. is worthless,

  294. he cannot even go out

  295. and see these fields

  296. because he's in prison.

  297. So he doesn't know

  298. anything about

  299. what this field is like

  300. and yet the word of God

  301. comes to him

  302. and he's just got to obey

  303. and got to trust God

  304. in what he says.

  305. Because you know,

  306. sometimes God will speak things

  307. which to our own minds

  308. don't seem to make sense

  309. in our human wisdom.

  310. but he wants us

  311. to learn how to trust him

  312. because he's up to something.

  313. And for Jeremiah,

  314. this is the time of famine

  315. and when you're in famine,

  316. you want to keep

  317. all the money you can

  318. because prices inflate

  319. and yet,

  320. he's paying

  321. all this money

  322. for what seems to be

  323. a worthless piece of paper

  324. and yet God says,

  325. buy this field

  326. as a sign

  327. that out of death

  328. life will come.

  329. That this won't last,

  330. that there will be

  331. property investments again.

  332. There will be restoration

  333. in my people.

  334. And so that's kind of

  335. the background

  336. to there where I want to focus

  337. on the prayer of Jeremiah

  338. from verse 16.

  339. And normally

  340. when your back's against a wall,

  341. in this kind of terrible situation,

  342. you see no way out.

  343. We normally kind of pray,

  344. God, get me out of here.

  345. We give him the laundry list

  346. of all the things

  347. that we want him to do for us.

  348. But Jeremiah doesn't start there.

  349. Jeremiah starts

  350. with great theology,

  351. with a perspective

  352. of who God is

  353. in this situation.

  354. So let's just kind of

  355. run through this

  356. and here's what he says.

  357. He says,

  358. Our Lord God,

  359. it is you

  360. who have made the heavens

  361. and the earth

  362. by your great power

  363. and your outstretched arm.

  364. Nothing is too hard

  365. for you.

  366. What he's doing,

  367. he's saying,

  368. God, you are the creator

  369. of the universe.

  370. From the asteroid belt

  371. beyond Pluto

  372. to the gecko

  373. in my prison cell

  374. and all the bacteria

  375. and all the atoms

  376. and molecules

  377. in between,

  378. everything of existence

  379. has come to be there

  380. because of you.

  381. That's power.

  382. That means,

  383. I know that

  384. if you can do that,

  385. then there's nothing

  386. that's too difficult for you.

  387. That's great theology.

  388. That's what every Christian

  389. should believe

  390. because that's who our God is.

  391. God can do anything.

  392. And then he goes on.

  393. He says,

  394. You show steadfast love

  395. to thousands

  396. but repay the guilt of fathers

  397. to their children after them.

  398. So what is he saying?

  399. He's saying,

  400. You're a great lover

  401. and you're a great judge.

  402. God shows hesed.

  403. That's the word

  404. Kevin talked about

  405. the other week.

  406. That means unflinching,

  407. unshakable,

  408. unmovable love.

  409. He is utterly devoted

  410. to his people.

  411. You know,

  412. many people these days

  413. have commitment phobia.

  414. We're always looking

  415. for a better option.

  416. God doesn't look

  417. for a better option.

  418. His love is a relentless

  419. pursuit of his people

  420. and nothing throws him off.

  421. But,

  422. what he's also saying here

  423. is he's a great lover

  424. but he's also a great judge.

  425. His love isn't soft.

  426. He takes sin seriously

  427. which is why the Israelites

  428. are in the situation

  429. they are right now.

  430. It's the judgment of God

  431. is upon them.

  432. And then finally he says,

  433. verse 19,

  434. he says,

  435. Your eyes are open

  436. to all the ways

  437. of the children of man,

  438. rewarding each one

  439. according to his ways

  440. and according to the fruit

  441. of his deeds.

  442. What he's saying is

  443. God sees everyone right now.

  444. So,

  445. he knows what Donald Trump,

  446. Xi Jinping,

  447. Carrie Lam

  448. are thinking,

  449. feeling,

  450. desiring,

  451. and doing

  452. right at this moment.

  453. He also knows

  454. how the beggar

  455. in the slum in Mumbai

  456. is thinking,

  457. feeling,

  458. desiring,

  459. doing right at this moment.

  460. He also knows

  461. what you are thinking,

  462. fearing,

  463. desiring,

  464. feeling

  465. right at this moment.

  466. No one escapes

  467. his eyesight.

  468. And your future reward

  469. and my future reward

  470. rest with him.

  471. Not with your investments,

  472. not with your MPF,

  473. not with your career,

  474. not with your health policy.

  475. Our entire future

  476. rests in him.

  477. That's a biblical view of God.

  478. That's great theology

  479. that Jeremiah starts with

  480. in this situation.

  481. He wants us to start

  482. with perspective.

  483. But then he goes on

  484. and he says,

  485. it's not just theology.

  486. He's also,

  487. this is a God of history

  488. who works in reality.

  489. So he goes through

  490. the story of the Exodus.

  491. And he says,

  492. Israel's great moment

  493. of redemption

  494. shows that God's power

  495. is not just in creation.

  496. God's power is in history.

  497. We've seen his love

  498. and his judgment

  499. and his justice

  500. in delivering us

  501. from slavery.

  502. He's taken us

  503. from the worst circumstances

  504. before.

  505. And it says,

  506. even to this day,

  507. even right up till now,

  508. this is the kind of God

  509. we know he has provided for us.

  510. He has done everything for us

  511. again and again and again.

  512. And as Christians,

  513. we might say,

  514. we'll look back to the death

  515. and resurrection of Jesus

  516. and say,

  517. we have seen God's power

  518. in our lives

  519. through forgiveness,

  520. through his provision,

  521. through his power,

  522. through his love

  523. and through his justice.

  524. And if you are a Christian

  525. and you've been walking with him

  526. and seeking to put your faith in him,

  527. then you will have stories

  528. of seeing how God

  529. has been continually faithful to you.

  530. You've seen his provision.

  531. You've seen his grace.

  532. You've seen his love

  533. in your life.

  534. And so Jeremiah

  535. starts with theology

  536. and then God in history

  537. to show that actually

  538. this God is not just theoretical.

  539. But then he brings it down

  540. to the reality.

  541. The reality of the people

  542. here.

  543. Because there's a problem.

  544. The people of Israel,

  545. why are they in this mess?

  546. Because Jeremiah says,

  547. we've just disobeyed.

  548. We've been like a stubborn,

  549. rebellious,

  550. spoilt teenager.

  551. We did not obey your voice.

  552. We did nothing of all

  553. that you commanded us to do.

  554. Jeremiah's been preaching

  555. for 40 years

  556. the same message,

  557. calling people back to God.

  558. And for 40 years,

  559. they have not listened to a single word

  560. that he said.

  561. I mean,

  562. just imagine

  563. preaching a sermon

  564. for 40 years

  565. and never having anyone

  566. listen to you.

  567. In fact,

  568. it's not just they don't listen to him.

  569. They've thrown him in prison

  570. and have tried to kill him

  571. multiple times.

  572. He's not on Israel's

  573. top 10 preacher list.

  574. And the reality is

  575. because of their hearts,

  576. the shelves are empty.

  577. The equivalent of ISIS

  578. is about to enter

  579. into the city.

  580. The devastation is total.

  581. There's a virus going around.

  582. And Jeremiah says,

  583. God,

  584. I know that you're in this.

  585. I know you've promised judgment.

  586. But then you've told me

  587. to go and buy a field.

  588. That is insane,

  589. God.

  590. Like,

  591. I don't know if you

  592. have ever

  593. done something

  594. that God calls you to do

  595. and then had second thoughts

  596. about it.

  597. You start getting doubts.

  598. But Jeremiah,

  599. he's got all this great theology.

  600. He's got this history

  601. that he knows of God

  602. in his life

  603. and God in

  604. the people of God.

  605. And yet,

  606. right now,

  607. he's facing a situation

  608. where he's going,

  609. is that really real?

  610. Right now,

  611. it's the test for him

  612. whether what he knows

  613. in his head,

  614. what he's known

  615. in his experience

  616. is actually

  617. whether he's going to

  618. bank his life on it

  619. right now

  620. in the reality

  621. in the present circumstances

  622. that he's facing.

  623. You see,

  624. faith in God

  625. often remains in your head

  626. until it's tested,

  627. until it costs you something.

  628. Until you have to rely on it.

  629. I don't know if you ever saw,

  630. a few years ago,

  631. Jean-Claude Van Damme,

  632. the Belgian actor,

  633. did an advert

  634. for Volvo trucks.

  635. I don't know if you ever saw that.

  636. Volvo's claim

  637. was that they had

  638. the most incredible

  639. precision steering

  640. on their trucks.

  641. So to prove it,

  642. what they had were

  643. two trucks

  644. were going to reverse

  645. backwards side by side,

  646. and Van Damme

  647. was going to

  648. have his feet

  649. on the wing mirrors

  650. of either truck

  651. and then the trucks

  652. were going to move apart

  653. until finally

  654. Van Damme was going to

  655. do the splits

  656. in the middle of them

  657. as they moved backwards.

  658. And you see

  659. the kind of

  660. the making of this

  661. and you see

  662. the Volvo mechanic

  663. explaining how amazing

  664. the Volvo system is.

  665. The precision is incredible.

  666. And at one point,

  667. Van Damme goes,

  668. but, you know,

  669. if you move slightly aside,

  670. I'm going to fall, right?

  671. And the guy says,

  672. listen, you've got to trust us

  673. because our drivers

  674. are the best.

  675. And for Van Damme

  676. at that moment,

  677. Faith wasn't going,

  678. oh, okay, yeah,

  679. I believe you,

  680. but I don't think

  681. I'm going to go

  682. on the truck.

  683. Faith was actually saying,

  684. okay, I will basically

  685. bank my life

  686. on you guys

  687. because I can trust

  688. that you are reliable.

  689. That's what faith does.

  690. And, you know,

  691. afterwards,

  692. when he gets off the truck

  693. and he's still in one piece,

  694. his faith in those drivers

  695. would have gone from

  696. just being a theoretical faith

  697. to now he knows.

  698. Now he knows.

  699. And Jeremiah,

  700. he's bought this field,

  701. he's wondering,

  702. am I stupid

  703. for trusting God?

  704. This makes no sense.

  705. And God comes to him

  706. and says,

  707. I am Yahweh,

  708. that God

  709. that you've just been

  710. praying about,

  711. God of all flesh,

  712. the God of the Babylonians,

  713. the God of the Israelites

  714. you've been trying

  715. to preach to.

  716. Your God

  717. is anything

  718. too hard for me.

  719. Like,

  720. is even

  721. this situation,

  722. is your theology

  723. enough for this situation

  724. to know that

  725. me,

  726. God,

  727. right now,

  728. I am that same

  729. God of creation,

  730. that same God

  731. of history.

  732. And God's just

  733. got real with Jeremiah.

  734. And he says,

  735. it's going to get worse

  736. before it gets better.

  737. That's not the news

  738. you always want to hear.

  739. But he says,

  740. no,

  741. the Babylonians,

  742. like I've been promising,

  743. are going to come in.

  744. But I want you to know

  745. that I'm doing

  746. something bigger

  747. than you realize

  748. right through this.

  749. In 70 years,

  750. I'm going to bring

  751. the people back

  752. to the land.

  753. But in 600 years,

  754. through Jesus,

  755. I'm going to bring

  756. in an everlasting covenant.

  757. And I'm going to

  758. change people's hearts.

  759. I'm going to do

  760. miracles

  761. in your life.

  762. This moment

  763. right now

  764. is a little moment

  765. in the whole history

  766. of what I'm up to.

  767. Will you trust me?

  768. So that's kind of

  769. the story

  770. of what's going on.

  771. That's his prayer.

  772. That's how God answers him.

  773. So now,

  774. I just want to bring

  775. this down to us

  776. and think,

  777. how does this really

  778. engage with us

  779. in times of trial

  780. and testing

  781. when we go through?

  782. And I think

  783. there's three things

  784. that I think

  785. this passage

  786. draws out for us.

  787. One,

  788. when we face

  789. challenging trials

  790. and crises,

  791. we see it as

  792. an opportunity

  793. to grow

  794. in faith

  795. and love.

  796. You know,

  797. people,

  798. these days,

  799. they love talking

  800. about the Chinese

  801. word for crisis.

  802. I think it's

  803. ngai gei

  804. and the ngai

  805. from ngai him

  806. meaning danger

  807. and gei from gei wui

  808. meaning opportunity.

  809. So people say,

  810. danger is an opportunity.

  811. But what normally

  812. happens in crisis

  813. is we turn in

  814. on ourselves

  815. and we just get

  816. focused on our own issues.

  817. we try and protect

  818. ourselves.

  819. In Jeremiah's day,

  820. it's no different.

  821. We don't know

  822. why his cousin

  823. came to Jeremiah

  824. to sell his field

  825. but it could be

  826. that other relatives

  827. were not willing

  828. to take their responsibility

  829. because,

  830. man,

  831. it's a worthless investment.

  832. You can understand it.

  833. When times are hard,

  834. you try and batten

  835. down the hatches.

  836. Right now,

  837. in Hong Kong

  838. and globally,

  839. people are afraid.

  840. we feel the crisis.

  841. We feel the economy.

  842. We feel

  843. whether it's the virus,

  844. whether it's the stock market,

  845. whether it's the loss of jobs,

  846. whether it's the frustration

  847. with our kids

  848. of what to do with them

  849. for the next few months,

  850. whether it's the loneliness

  851. of isolation.

  852. We can tend to turn in

  853. on ourselves.

  854. But I wonder whether

  855. you see this moment

  856. as an incredible opportunity

  857. that this is what

  858. scripture calls a test,

  859. an opportunity

  860. for our faith

  861. to get real.

  862. You know,

  863. we've been talking about

  864. being part of God's people

  865. means being part

  866. of his mission.

  867. But how does that go

  868. from being just

  869. a head knowledge

  870. to actually being real

  871. right now

  872. in the present circumstances?

  873. Well,

  874. let's take our love offering.

  875. Some of you

  876. may have planned

  877. to give based on

  878. your current financial position.

  879. You've got it all planned out.

  880. And now,

  881. your plans are ruined.

  882. Your investments have collapsed.

  883. And we're still asking you

  884. to consider giving

  885. a love offering.

  886. And maybe you're going,

  887. yeah, but,

  888. okay,

  889. I would have done that

  890. like a couple of weeks ago,

  891. but it's insane now.

  892. Not at this time.

  893. And God will say,

  894. will you trust me?

  895. Buy the field.

  896. Buy the field.

  897. Do you believe

  898. nothing is too hard for me?

  899. Put your money

  900. where your faith is,

  901. where your doctrine is,

  902. where your theology is,

  903. because then you will see

  904. whether I'm truly trustworthy.

  905. Maybe it's not money.

  906. Maybe it's sharing the gospel.

  907. You've been so worried

  908. about everything

  909. that's going on,

  910. you haven't even thought

  911. about the lost people

  912. around you.

  913. We so often just

  914. get wrapped up

  915. with how we're feeling.

  916. But God's word

  917. comes to you today

  918. and says,

  919. buy the field.

  920. And what that means is,

  921. this week,

  922. you're going to have

  923. conversations about the virus.

  924. You're going to have

  925. conversations about the economy,

  926. about investments,

  927. about people's fears.

  928. And instead of just going,

  929. yeah,

  930. it's really crazy

  931. at the moment,

  932. I want us as a church

  933. to actually seize the moment

  934. and say,

  935. God,

  936. give me grace

  937. for this.

  938. But,

  939. to reply

  940. in those moments

  941. when they're going to

  942. come up this week

  943. to go,

  944. hey, listen,

  945. yeah,

  946. I know it's been crazy

  947. at the moment.

  948. But one thing I've realized

  949. through this time

  950. is that my security

  951. has never been

  952. in my investments.

  953. My security

  954. has never been

  955. in just whether

  956. everything's working out

  957. because this is

  958. an insecure world.

  959. but I've discovered

  960. something that's more secure

  961. than any of those things

  962. and that's Jesus.

  963. Can I tell you about him?

  964. I challenge

  965. every one of us

  966. this week,

  967. be praying

  968. because there will be

  969. opportunities

  970. and God's saying to us,

  971. by the field,

  972. trust me,

  973. the people's response

  974. may be,

  975. you're insane.

  976. Your own thoughts may be,

  977. that feels insane.

  978. But will you trust him?

  979. By the field,

  980. let's see what I'll do.

  981. It's the first thing.

  982. See the opportunities.

  983. Second thing,

  984. God plays the long game.

  985. Jeremiah would never

  986. actually get to see

  987. his field.

  988. The Babylonians

  989. retreated briefly.

  990. He tried to go out

  991. to see the field

  992. while there was

  993. a bit of a gap.

  994. But then he got arrested

  995. on the way

  996. because people thought

  997. he was going to go

  998. and defect to the other side

  999. and he gets put back

  1000. in prison again.

1001. And then he gets dragged

  1002. off to Egypt,

  1003. never sees the field.

1004. I find this really challenging

1005. because we tend to think

1006. the world revolves around us.

1007. We tend to think that

  1008. if I'm trusting God,

1009. then it should all work out

  1010. for me,

  1011. in blessings for me

  1012. and for my interests.

1013. But what if we trusted God

  1014. right now

  1015. and it wasn't us

  1016. who benefited from it,

  1017. but there were others

  1018. down the line

  1019. who were the recipients

  1020. of that blessing?

  1021. What if it was

  1022. generations down the line

  1023. that the fruit

  1024. of our faithfulness now

  1025. was experienced?

  1026. You know,

  1027. when we first started

  1028. Watermark,

  1029. there was this phrase

  1030. that we kept using

  1031. which was,

  1032. one plants the seed,

  1033. the next generation

  1034. enjoys the shade.

  1035. What if we planted

1036. the seed of the gospel

  1037. through our words

  1038. or in our finances

  1039. but somebody else

  1040. reaped the harvest?

  1041. You know,

  1042. faithfulness to God

  1043. resounds into eternity.

  1044. Babylon

1045. is a pile of dust

  1046. in the Iraqi desert

  1047. right now.

1048. They couldn't even find it

1049. until a few years ago.

  1050. Jerusalem still exists

  1051. with a property market

  1052. that's thriving.

  1053. Many of us,

  1054. and even today,

  1055. we're still reading Jeremiah

  1056. 2,600 years later

1057. what if in 2,000 years time

  1058. if God allows that?

  1059. Hong Kong

1060. is a bunch of mountains.

  1061. Beijing

1062. is a pile of dust.

  1063. But our faithfulness

  1064. to God

  1065. is still bearing fruit

  1066. because He

  1067. is making

  1068. something much

  1069. greater happen.

  1070. God plays

  1071. a much bigger game

  1072. and He calls us

1073. to be part of it

  1074. where we trust Him.

  1075. Thirdly

  1076. and finally,

  1077. so He doesn't just

  1078. want us to see

  1079. as an opportunity.

  1080. He just doesn't want

  1081. to see us

  1082. that actually

  1083. there's a much

  1084. broader perspective.

  1085. He also is more

  1086. concerned about our hearts

  1087. than just our fields.

  1088. You know,

  1089. God makes a promise

  1090. to the people

  1091. who will be exiled

  1092. and defeated

  1093. by the Babylonians

  1094. and He says this,

  1095. I will gather them.

1096. I will bring them back.

  1097. I will make them

  1098. dwell in safety.

  1099. I will give them

  1100. one heart

  1101. and one way

1102. that they may fear me

  1103. forever

  1104. for their own good

  1105. and the good

  1106. of their children.

  1107. Now for Jeremiah,

  1108. what promise

  1109. do you think

1110. is the most miraculous here?

  1111. You know,

  1112. he's gone out

  1113. to buy this field

  1114. when it seems like

  1115. the whole property market

1116. is going to be devastated.

  1117. He knows

  1118. it's going to require

  1119. a miracle

  1120. for that ever

  1121. to mean anything again.

  1122. For there ever

  1123. to be a thriving

  1124. property market

  1125. which isn't just

  1126. controlled by the Babylonians.

  1127. He knows

  1128. that people

1129. are going to be exiled.

  1130. But Jeremiah

  1131. also sees

  1132. that there is

  1133. a greater miracle.

  1134. Jeremiah,

  1135. as we've said,

  1136. he's been preaching

  1137. for 40 years

  1138. and not one

  1139. single sermon

  1140. has anybody

  1141. listened to.

  1142. I don't know,

  1143. have you ever

  1144. tried to warn someone

1145. not to date a person

  1146. because you can see

  1147. their bad news

  1148. and the person

  1149. refuses to listen

1150. and then six months later

  1151. they come to you

  1152. on the phone

  1153. crying because

  1154. disaster just happened

  1155. and you predicted

  1156. it all along.

  1157. But then

  1158. they go back again

  1159. to do it again

  1160. and again

  1161. and again

  1162. well for 40 years

  1163. and longer

  1164. that's been Israel.

  1165. And this disaster

  1166. is God's judgment

  1167. on rebellious sinners

  1168. but notice

  1169. what he says.

  1170. He says

  1171. I will give you

  1172. one heart.

  1173. I will make

  1174. with them

  1175. an everlasting covenant.

  1176. I will put

  1177. the fear of me

  1178. in their hearts.

  1179. I will rejoice

  1180. in doing them good.

  1181. I will plant

  1182. them in the land.

  1183. the greatest miracle

  1184. in this passage

  1185. is that God

  1186. doesn't abandon

  1187. rebellious

  1188. unbelieving

  1189. people

  1190. like you

  1191. and me.

  1192. He doesn't

  1193. give up

  1194. on his people.

  1195. He takes

  1196. rebels

  1197. and he draws

  1198. them to himself.

  1199. And notice

  1200. who's doing

  1201. it all.

  1202. This is not

  1203. kind of clever

  1204. Jeremiah.

  1205. It's God

  1206. who takes

  1207. the hard-hearted

  1208. and changes them.

  1209. It's God

  1210. who takes

  1211. divided people

  1212. and makes them

  1213. one.

  1214. It's God

  1215. who takes

  1216. the disinterested

  1217. in his voice

  1218. and brings them

  1219. to fear him,

  1220. to love him,

  1221. to obey him.

  1222. And he says

  1223. he does it

  1224. through making

  1225. a covenant.

  1226. A covenant

  1227. in blood.

  1228. Through Christ's

  1229. sacrificial death

  1230. on the cross

  1231. God does

  1232. what we

  1233. couldn't do.

  1234. Jesus

  1235. pursues

  1236. rebels

  1237. and he will

  1238. do anything.

  1239. Even dying

  1240. on the cross.

  1241. Even taking

  1242. them through

  1243. the most

  1244. painful

  1245. circumstances

  1246. to awaken

  1247. them to

  1248. see their

  1249. need of

  1250. him.

  1251. Because

  1252. God,

  1253. is anything

  1254. too hard

  1255. for God?

  1256. Can he

  1257. even change

  1258. the hardest

  1259. heart and

  1260. turn it

  1261. back?

  1262. We cannot

  1263. revive our

  1264. own hearts.

  1265. We cannot

  1266. change anybody

  1267. else's hearts.

  1268. We cannot

  1269. stop ourselves

  1270. from fearing.

  1271. We cannot

  1272. stop anybody

  1273. else from

  1274. fearing.

  1275. But nothing

  1276. is too hard

  1277. for God.

  1278. He can

  1279. change

  1280. even you

  1281. and me

  1282. and the

  1283. people around

  1284. us right

  1285. now.

  1286. You know,

  1287. Jesus said,

  1288. unless a grain

  1289. of wheat

  1290. falls to

  1291. the ground

  1292. and dies,

  1293. it will

  1294. not bear

  1295. fruit.

  1296. Jesus

  1297. didn't just

  1298. buy a field

  1299. he'll never

  1300. see.

  1301. He poured

  1302. out his

  1303. life for

  1304. people who

  1305. keep on

  1306. ignoring him.

  1307. And yet he

  1308. has continually

  1309. chased after

  1310. us.

  1311. And we

  1312. today are

  1313. the

  1314. beneficiaries

  1315. of that

  1316. love

  1317. 2,000

  1318. years ago.

  1319. Again and

  1320. again.

  1321. He could

  1322. have said,

  1323. it's insane

  1324. to give so

  1325. much for

  1326. people who

  1327. be so

  1328. ungrateful,

  1329. who be so

  1330. centered on

  1331. themselves.

  1332. But he

  1333. didn't.

  1334. Because God's

  1335. love is so

  1336. much more

  1337. expansive,

  1338. so much

  1339. more generous

  1340. than mine

  1341. is or

  1342. yours is.

  1343. The reason

  1344. we can

  1345. worship him

  1346. today and

  1347. say that

  1348. theology is

  1349. real in our

  1350. lives is

  1351. because he

  1352. said,

  1353. not my

  1354. will but

  1355. yours be

  1356. done to

  1357. his father.

  1358. He entrusted

  1359. his entire

  1360. life, not

  1361. just a field

  1362. to his

  1363. father, so

  1364. that you

  1365. and I

  1366. could be

  1367. his, so

  1368. we could

  1369. be secure.

  1370. Right now,

  1371. the biggest

  1372. problem in

  1373. your life and

  1374. in the people

  1375. around you is

  1376. not the

  1377. coronavirus.

  1378. It's not

  1379. the economy.

  1380. it's not

  1381. what to do

  1382. with your

  1383. kids.

  1384. It's our

  1385. hearts.

  1386. And God

  1387. shakes

  1388. everything down

  1389. sometimes to

  1390. expose to us

  1391. the reality of

  1392. where our

  1393. hearts are.

  1394. You know,

  1395. one of the

  1396. best things

  1397. that is

  1398. happening in

  1399. Hong Kong

  1400. right now in

  1401. the midst of

  1402. this tragedy

  1403. is God is

  1404. shattering our

  1405. sense of

  1406. security and

  1407. our sense of

  1408. self-control

  1409. and our sense

  1410. of being able

  1411. to control

  1412. the world.

  1413. God is

  1414. because in

  1415. history,

  1416. when society

  1417. is stripped

  1418. of the

  1419. crutches that

  1420. it leans

  1421. on apart

  1422. from God,

  1423. when the

  1424. church

  1425. realizes it's

  1426. got nothing

  1427. left,

  1428. absolutely

  1429. nothing left

  1430. to lean on

  1431. other than

  1432. God himself,

  1433. that's when

  1434. revivals

  1435. break out.

  1436. That's when

  1437. you begin to

  1438. see the

  1439. awesome power

  1440. of God

  1441. coming.

  1442. Because you

  1443. see,

  1444. the way that

  1445. God works

  1446. through the

  1447. cross,

  1448. he takes

  1449. you through

  1450. death to

  1451. bring you

  1452. into life.

  1453. That's the

  1454. way the

  1455. gospel always

  1456. worked,

  1457. the cross

  1458. before the

  1459. resurrection.

  1460. God is

  1461. bringing death

  1462. in multiple

  1463. ways in

  1464. our lives,

  1465. to our

  1466. dreams,

  1467. to our

  1468. hopes,

  1469. to our

  1470. idols,

  1471. to all

  1472. kinds of

  1473. things,

  1474. because he

  1475. wants to

  1476. bring us

  1477. life.

  1478. That's where

  1479. he's taking

  1480. us.

  1481. He wants

  1482. to resurrect

  1483. us through

  1484. this with

  1485. his power.

  1486. So how do

  1487. we respond?

  1488. We get on

  1489. our knees.

  1490. We repent

  1491. where we

  1492. haven't bought

  1493. the field

  1494. that he's

  1495. been telling

  1496. us to

  1497. buy.

  1498. We haven't

  1499. listened to

  1500. him where

  1501. he's been

  1502. calling us

  1503. to risk

  1504. and step

  1505. out in

  1506. faith.

  1507. And we

  1508. ask him

  1509. to revive

  1510. us.

  1511. Give us

  1512. that fear

  1513. of you so

  1514. we can step

  1515. out in faith

  1516. this week to

  1517. say, God,

  1518. what's the

  1519. field you

  1520. want me to

  1521. buy?

  1522. I don't

  1523. just want to

  1524. have a

  1525. theoretical

  1526. knowledge of

  1527. you.

  1528. I don't

  1529. even want

  1530. to rely

  1531. on my

  1532. past history

  1533. with you.

  1534. I want

  1535. an experience

  1536. and encounter

  1537. with you

  1538. today and

  1539. I want to

  1540. trust you

  1541. to know

  1542. that you're

  1543. powerful and

  1544. your love

  1545. is unfailing.

  1546. This is an

  1547. opportunity for

  1548. us to grow

  1549. deeper into

  1550. who God

  1551. is and

  1552. our faith

  1553. to grow

  1554. and our

  1555. love for

  1556. others to

  1557. grow.

  1558. This is

  1559. where we

  1560. as a church

  1561. need to

  1562. arise and

  1563. be a light

  1564. in the

  1565. city.

  1566. So let

  1567. me pray

  1568. for us.

  1569. Father,

  1570. I'm just

  1571. so aware

  1572. that I

  1573. can say

  1574. the right

  1575. doctrines

  1576. about you.

  1577. We all

  1578. can.

  1579. We can

  1580. say the

  1581. right

  1582. experiences

  1583. and testimonies

  1584. of you

  1585. that we

  1586. have known

  1587. in our

  1588. past.

  1589. But

  1590. Father,

  1591. today is

  1592. the day

  1593. you want

  1594. to take

  1595. us deeper

  1596. into you.

  1597. Forgive us,

  1598. Lord,

  1599. where we've

  1600. been so

  1601. clinging to

  1602. other things

  1603. that we have

  1604. failed to see

  1605. you in the

  1606. midst of all

  1607. that's going

  1608. on.

  1609. Forgive us

  1610. where we've

  1611. not been

  1612. willing to

  1613. step out in

  1614. faith to

  1615. trust you

  1616. with what

  1617. you're calling

  1618. us to,

  1619. Lord.

  1620. Please open

  1621. our eyes

  1622. to see you.

  1623. Speak

  1624. to us for

  1625. where you're

  1626. calling us

  1627. to buy a

  1628. field this

  1629. week,

  1630. Lord,

  1631. that may

  1632. seem insane

  1633. in this

  1634. current

  1635. circumstances.

  1636. But because

  1637. we know

  1638. that we

  1639. know

  1640. that we

  1641. know

  1642. that you

  1643. are the

  1644. creator,

  1645. God,

  1646. nothing is

  1647. too hard

  1648. for you.

  1649. Give us

  1650. that faith

  1651. and that

  1652. confidence

  1653. to trust

  1654. you.

  1655. Please work

  1656. in our

  1657. church,

  1658. revive us,

  1659. Lord.

  1660. Let nothing

  1661. else provide

  1662. the security

  1663. in our

  1664. lives

  1665. that you

  1666. do,

  1667. Lord.

  1668. I pray

  1669. that we

  1670. would run

  1671. to you

  1672. with a

  1673. new

  1674. desperation

  1675. and that

  1676. you would

  1677. just bring

  1678. incredible

  1679. life,

  1680. incredible

  1681. fruit,

  1682. incredible

  1683. freedom

  1684. through this

  1685. situation,

  1686. we pray.

  1687. In Jesus'

  1688. name,

  1689. Amen.
