  1. The scripture reading comes from Deuteronomy chapters 4 and 5.

    Deuteronomy 4 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen.

  3. See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the Lord my God commanded me,

  4. that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.

  5. Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples,

  6. who, when they hear these statutes, will say,

  7. Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

  8. For what great nation is there that has a God so near to it as the Lord our God is to us,

  9. whenever we call upon him?

  10. And what great nation is there that has statutes and rules so righteous

  11. as all this law that I set before you today?

  12. Only take care and keep your soul diligently,

  13. lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen,

  14. unless they depart from your heart all the days of your life.

  15. Make them known to your children and your children's children.

  16. And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them,

  17. Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today,

  18. and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.

  19. The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.

  20. Not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant,

  21. but with us, who are all of us here alive today.

  22. The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain,

  23. out of the midst of the fire,

  24. while I stood between the Lord and you at that time

  25. to declare to you the word of the Lord.

  26. For you were afraid because of the fire,

  27. and you did not go up into the mountain.

  28. He said,

  29. I am the Lord your God,

  30. who brought you out of the land of Egypt,

  31. out of the house of slavery.

  32. This is the word of God.

  33. Great.

  34. So, today we're starting on a new series,

  35. looking at the Ten Commandments.

  36. And this time that we are going through

  37. is a time where rules really count at the moment.

  38. I don't know if you have looked around you.

  39. The rules are everywhere.

  40. Don't enter any shop without a mask.

  41. Don't gather more than four people in a place.

  42. Our experience of life is totally shaped by rules.

  43. And for some of us, that gives us comfort.

  44. For some of us,

  45. it's just feeling very restricted at this time.

  46. And it raises a lot of questions

  47. about what does it mean to be free?

  48. What does it mean to live life well?

  49. Well, one Greek philosopher called Epictetus,

  50. he said,

  51. is freedom anything else other than the right to live as we wish?

  52. Nothing else.

  53. American philosopher,

  54. pitbull,

  55. rapper Pitbull,

  56. said,

  57. I'm free to do what I want and have a good time.

  58. And so,

  59. both of these people are saying to us,

  60. the absence of rules is freedom.

  61. That's the good life.

  62. But if you've ever been to a nation

  63. where the drivers follow that principle

  64. of the absence of rules is the way to live,

  65. you know that is not the way to freedom.

  66. That's the way to chaos.

  67. But some people love rules.

  68. They love morality.

  69. You know,

  70. in Hong Kong,

  71. I think many people around the world

  72. think that Christianity is just a set of rules.

  73. So I have met many people

  74. who have brought their kids,

  75. non-Christians,

  76. they've brought their kids to church on Sunday.

  77. They've dropped them off

  78. and I've heard them say,

  79. listen,

  80. be good,

  81. learn how to be good through these people,

  82. but don't listen to any of the religious stuff they talk about.

  83. And,

  84. because what they think is,

  85. get the rules,

  86. but don't worry about the God part.

  87. But,

  88. I'm not sure whether people who love rules

  89. or people who hate rules

  90. will have the perception

  91. that King David in the Psalms had

  92. of the Psalm that Jeremy read to us earlier.

  93. Let me just read a little bit of it again to you.

  94. The law of the Lord is perfect,

  95. reviving the soul.

  96. The precepts of the Lord are right,

  97. rejoicing the heart.

  98. More to be desired are they than gold,

  99. even much fine gold,

  100. sweeter also than honey

  101. and drippings of the honeycomb.

  102. That's Psalm 19.

  103. You see,

  104. have you ever read the Ten Commandments

  105. and go,

  106. that is better

  107. than making a billion dollars on the stock market,

  108. having a 50% raise in your salary?

  109. But that's what the psalmist is saying.

  110. He's saying,

  111. if that is not our heart,

  112. God wants to change our heart,

  113. and that's what I want us to see

  114. and to get this morning,

  115. that I want us to come away going,

  116. God's commands are good for us.

  117. Because you see,

  118. freedom and life

  119. is not doing what we want to do.

  120. It's doing what we ought to do

  121. so we become the people

  122. we were created to be.

  123. Freedom,

  124. let me say it again,

  125. freedom is not doing what we want to do,

  126. but doing what we ought to do

  127. so we become the people

  128. we were created to be.

  129. You know,

  130. a goldfish is most free

  131. when it's swimming in water.

  132. It is not free

  133. if it starts trying to hike up the peak.

  134. It's going to die

  135. because fish were made to swim.

  136. Well,

  137. we were made to swim in God's will,

  138. which means that you and I

  139. will learn to live well

  140. even at this time

  141. where some of us feel very restricted

  142. if we get the commands of God in Scripture.

  143. So,

  144. we're just going to go on this journey

  145. of the next few weeks

  146. looking through the Ten Commandments

  147. and I'm going to just introduce them

  148. to you today.

  149. And so,

  150. by way of background,

  151. let me just start off by saying

  152. there are two versions

  153. of the Ten Commandments.

  154. One of them comes in Exodus 20

  155. where God had brought the people

  156. out of Egypt

  157. and he takes them

  158. to the Mount Sinai

  159. and he gives them the law

  160. for the first time.

  161. But then,

  162. the people just keep disobeying

  163. and keep disobeying.

  164. They wander through the wilderness.

  165. Forty years later,

  166. most of them have died out

  167. and now,

  168. they're back on the edge

  169. of the land,

  170. of the promised land

  171. in Moab

  172. and God comes again

  173. through Moses

  174. to bring them

  175. a second time

  176. the Ten Commandments.

  177. And Moses is like a parent

  178. who is about to send

  179. their teenage son

  180. off to boarding school

  181. and giving them a pep talk

  182. of everything you need to know

  183. for how to live well

  184. in the new land

  185. that I am taking you into.

  186. That is what

  187. the Ten Commandments

  188. are part of.

  189. They're part of this talk

  190. to the people.

  191. And by the way,

  192. the Ten Commandments

  193. are never called

  194. the Ten Commandments

  195. in the Bible.

  196. They are called,

  197. in Hebrew,

  198. the Ten Words.

  199. Which should tell us something.

  200. It should tell us

  201. that these are not

  202. some cold,

  203. divine,

  204. impersonal government

  205. laying down the law

  206. to us.

  207. These are the words

  208. of a personal God

  209. speaking

  210. to create a people

  211. and these are

  212. His constitution

  213. that they can be

  214. the kind of community

  215. that He wants them

  216. to be.

  217. So what that means is

  218. the law

  219. and the commandments

  220. are not

  221. some legalistic way

  222. to try and get

  223. into heaven.

  224. They never were.

  225. The Ten Commandments

  226. here

  227. starts off,

  228. I am the Lord

  229. your God

  230. who brought you

  231. out of Egypt,

  232. out of the house

  233. of slavery.

  234. before you have

  235. a single rule

  236. God reminds

  237. the people

  238. I have saved you,

  239. I have redeemed you,

  240. I have brought you

  241. to myself.

  242. God doesn't say

  243. keep these ten rules

  244. and then you can

  245. be my people.

  246. No,

  247. He is saying

  248. I have brought you

  249. to be my people,

  250. I have brought you

  251. to be free,

  252. I have brought you

  253. to know how to live,

  254. now live

  255. in the way

  256. that I want you to

  257. because that is

  258. going to be your life.

  259. It is grace,

  260. it is not legalism.

  261. So,

  262. if you have

  263. the passage

  264. with you,

  265. I am going to

  266. dive between

  267. the two passages

  268. in Deuteronomy 4

  269. and 5

  270. and really learn

  271. what are the ten

  272. words all about.

  273. And I have got

  274. four things

  275. that they are about.

  276. They are revelation,

  277. they are wisdom,

  278. they are lifestyle

  279. and they are window.

  280. Okay?

  281. Revelation,

  282. wisdom,

  283. lifestyle

  284. and window.

  285. So,

  286. let's have a look,

  287. first one.

  288. The revelation

  289. of God.

  290. What they are doing,

  291. they are revealing

  292. His authority.

  293. So,

  294. first of all,

  295. they reveal His authority.

  296. Mount Sinai,

  297. in Deuteronomy 5,

    Deuteronomy 5:4

  298. verse 4,

  299. Moses says,

  300. the Lord spoke

  301. with you

  302. face to face

  303. at the mountain

  304. out of the midst

  305. of fire.

  306. You see,

  307. at Mount Sinai,

  308. there was thunder,

  309. there was lightning,

  310. there was smoke,

  311. there was darkness.

  312. This was a multimedia

  313. spectacular

  314. with surround sound.

  315. This wasn't God

  316. as kind of a nice

  317. grandfather in the sky

  318. speaking some words

  319. to His children.

  320. This was a terrifying

  321. thunderstorm

  322. and a forest fire

  323. combined

  324. and out of that,

  325. God speaks.

  326. You see,

  327. His holy authority

  328. is shown.

  329. And the people,

  330. they can't even

  331. touch the mountain

  332. or come near

  333. and they go,

  334. like,

  335. how can an awesome

  336. God like this

  337. speak to us

  338. and we can still live?

  339. Because,

  340. you know,

  341. what it's showing

  342. is that we often

  343. tame God down

  344. to kind of our level.

  345. But God is not

  346. a tame God.

  347. The God who made

  348. the galaxies,

  349. made black holes,

  350. made meteorites

  351. is not a God

  352. you can just

  353. put in a box.

  354. You see,

  355. when God speaks,

  356. He's not making

  357. suggestions.

  358. He's speaking

  359. with authority.

  360. You know,

  361. I've been in

  362. team meetings

  363. with an older,

  364. really experienced

  365. guy there

  366. and for 45 minutes,

  367. younger people,

  368. we're all kind of

  369. talking ignorantly

  370. about a whole load

  371. of issues

  372. and we're getting nowhere.

  373. And then at the end

  374. of about 45 minutes,

  375. the older guy

  376. just says

  377. one or two sentences

  378. and suddenly

  379. everyone goes,

  380. oh,

  381. that's it.

  382. That's settled it.

  383. You see,

  384. that's what God

  385. is doing.

  386. We humans

  387. are like ignorant

  388. people with all

  389. of our opinions

  390. but when God

  391. speaks,

  392. that settles it.

  393. His authority

  394. is complete.

  395. So it reveals

  396. His authority

  397. but it also reveals

  398. His desire

  399. for relationship.

  400. I love this.

  401. This is great.

  402. Verse 2

  403. of chapter 5

  404. says,

  405. the Lord,

  406. Yahweh,

  407. made a covenant

  408. with us

  409. in Horeb

  410. at Mount Sinai.

  411. You see,

  412. these 10 words

  413. are God's covenant.

  414. Now,

  415. we don't really

  416. talk about the word

  417. covenant a lot

  418. these days

  419. but in ancient times,

  420. a great and powerful

  421. king would make

  422. a covenant

  423. with a smaller king

  424. and basically

  425. what would happen,

  426. it was a relational

  427. agreement where

  428. the great king

  429. would call for

  430. the other person

  431. to give loyalty

  432. and taxation

  433. to him

  434. and in return

  435. what he would do,

  436. he'd give protection

  437. and maybe some provision.

  438. You see,

  439. it was a win-win

  440. kind of situation.

  441. And so,

  442. the Deuteronomy

  443. is actually

  444. written

  445. very much

  446. like the style

  447. of an ancient

  448. treaty.

  449. You know,

  450. there's God,

  451. the great and powerful

  452. king,

  453. Israel,

  454. the smaller

  455. power

  456. except for

  457. there's just one

  458. thing that's different.

  459. God doesn't get

  460. any mutual benefit

  461. out of this.

  462. He wasn't looking

  463. for some extra benefits

  464. just to increase

  465. his power

  466. or his wealth.

  467. God was already

  468. a powerful ruler

  469. of the world

  470. and Israel

  471. had already

  472. proved itself

  473. to be completely

  474. unfaithful

  475. in every way

  476. and yet God

  477. still comes

  478. and makes a covenant

  479. with them.

  480. Why?

  481. Deuteronomy 7

  482. says this,

  483. it was not

  484. because you were

  485. more in number

  486. than any other

  487. people

  488. that the Lord

  489. said his love

  490. and chose you.

  491. For you are

  492. the fewest

  493. of all peoples

  494. but it is

  495. because

  496. the Lord

  497. loves you.

  498. The Ten Commandments

  499. are pure grace

  500. from an authoritative

  501. but loving God.

  502. this is less

  503. like a treaty

  504. and more

  505. like a ridiculous

  506. marriage ceremony

  507. with God

  508. as the king

  509. who needs nothing

  510. chasing after

  511. a wretch.

  512. It's like Prince Harry

  513. chasing after

  514. a disfigured,

  515. battered,

  516. obnoxious,

  517. slum dwelling

  518. old beggar

  519. and pursuing her

  520. in marriage

  521. and then bringing her

  522. to Buckingham Palace

  523. to show everyone

  524. and he's proud

  525. of her

  526. and everyone goes

  527. what?

  528. You're with her?

  529. Totally out of your league

  530. and yet God

  531. through the exodus

  532. is showing again

  533. and again

  534. and again

  535. his love

  536. and the Ten Words

  537. are Israel's

  538. marriage vows

  539. to be exclusively

  540. Yahweh's

  541. and to love him

  542. in this relationship.

  543. It's all grace.

  544. It's all grace.

  545. You know in marriage

  546. the worst thing

  547. as a guy

  548. is when your wife

  549. assumes you know

  550. exactly how to love her best

  551. without ever communicating

  552. what she really wants

  553. and so you know

  554. as guys we're pretty dumb

  555. and we really don't know.

  556. You need to spell it out to us.

  557. You know it's like

  558. okay

  559. don't buy me

  560. a car magazine

  561. subscription

  562. for my birthday.

  563. Buy me a spa treatment

  564. or something.

  565. You go

  566. oh right

  567. okay

  568. that's what we need

  569. but pagan religions

  570. always left you

  571. guessing

  572. what their gods liked

  573. and then they punish you

  574. for getting it wrong

  575. but God in his grace

  576. tells us exactly

  577. how to do a relationship

  578. with him

  579. and how it can flourish.

  580. He doesn't leave you wondering.

  581. That's grace.

  582. That's the Ten Words.

  583. So he shows us his authority.

  584. He shows us his desire

  585. for relationship

  586. and he also reveals

  587. his character.

  588. You know in Deuteronomy

  589. God keeps telling the people

  590. walk in my ways

  591. which means

  592. image me

  593. do what I do.

  594. You know

  595. every commandment

  596. which is here

  597. reveals something

  598. of God's character

  599. to us.

  600. You know

  601. when Jesus

  602. he summarized

  603. the commandments

  604. he said

  605. you can summarize them

  606. in two ways.

  607. Love the Lord your God

  608. with all your heart

  609. soul mind and strength

  610. and love your neighbor

  611. as yourself.

  612. What he was saying is

  613. the commandments

  614. are all about love.

  615. Why?

  616. Because God is love.

  617. You see

  618. if you want to know

  619. what love is

  620. look at the commands.

  621. The first four

  622. are all about

  623. how to love God

  624. upwards

  625. in that direction.

  626. The next six

  627. show us

  628. what love for our neighbors

  629. look like

  630. in very practical terms.

  631. They reveal

  632. the heart of God.

  633. Ray Ortlund

  634. a pastor

  635. says this

  636. what kind

  637. of amazing person

  638. would say to us

  639. you shall not steal

  640. only a just

  641. and generous person

  642. who can be

  643. fully trusted

  644. who would never

  645. rob us

  646. or defraud us

  647. who would never

  648. lie or cheat

  649. who would never

  650. hold out on us wrongly

  651. who is not out

  652. for himself

  653. who feels no need

  654. and no appetite

  655. but only overflowing

  656. kindness

  657. and abundance.

  658. You see

  659. in each command

  660. you will see revealed

  661. a passionate

  662. devoted

  663. faithful

  664. loving

  665. just

  666. contented

  667. God

  668. who wants us

  669. as his people

  670. to be the same.

  671. It reveals

  672. God

  673. these commandments

  674. his authority

  675. his desire

  676. for relationship

  677. and his character.

  678. But that's not all

  679. they do.

  680. Don't just reveal God

  681. they also

  682. are wisdom

  683. for abundant

  684. living.

  685. This is why

  686. we've actually

  687. called these series

  688. 10 words

  689. for abundant

  690. life.

  691. Have a look

  692. at what it says

  693. in chapter 4

  694. verse 6.

  695. It says this

  696. keep these laws

  697. and do them

  698. for that will be

  699. your wisdom

  700. and understanding.

  701. Wisdom

  702. is the ability

  703. to make

  704. good decisions

  705. which lead

  706. to flourishing

  707. and the good life.

  708. That is what wisdom is.

  709. And so

  710. throughout Deuteronomy

  711. God keeps saying

  712. keep these commands

  713. so that it's going to go

  714. well with you

  715. so that you might

  716. live well.

  717. Deuteronomy 6.24

  718. says this

  719. the Lord commanded us

  720. to do

  721. all these statutes

  722. to fear the Lord

  723. our God

  724. listen

  725. here it is

  726. for our good

  727. always

  728. not just sometimes

  729. for our good

  730. always

  731. that's what the command

  732. is.

  733. Commands are all about.

  734. You know

  735. every one of us

  736. wants to live

  737. the good life

  738. don't we?

  739. That's why

  740. we watch

  741. all those TED talks

  742. and buy so many

  743. self-help books.

  744. We want wisdom

  745. because we want

  746. a flourishing life.

  747. You know

  748. in Genesis 2

  749. and 3

  750. God gives us

  751. this abundant

  752. garden

  753. with like a

  754. gazillion trees

  755. in it

  756. which are amazing

  757. and he tells them

  758. he gives them

  759. one command

  760. don't eat

  761. from that one tree

  762. you can eat

  763. from anything else

  764. that one tree

  765. will bring you death

  766. but just trust me

  767. with that one

  768. everything else

  769. you can have life

  770. but then the serpent

  771. comes along

  772. in Genesis 3

  773. and he says

  774. did God

  775. really say

  776. you can't eat

  777. from any

  778. tree

  779. in the garden

  780. no he didn't

  781. he just said

  782. one tree

  783. he didn't say

  784. any tree

  785. but you see

  786. that is always

  787. the lie

  788. behind every

  789. single sin

  790. that you will

  791. ever commit

  792. it's the lie

  793. that says

  794. God is trying

  795. to restrict you

  796. God is trying

  797. to make your life

  798. miserable

  799. God is trying

  800. to take joy

  801. from you

  802. it's not really

  803. for your good

  804. that's why

  805. Satan always

  806. wants you to focus

  807. on the one thing

  808. you don't have

  809. and to miss

  810. all the things

  811. that God wants

  812. to give you

  813. and has given

  814. you already

  815. he wants

  816. to focus

  817. you on

  818. what you're

  819. going to

  820. miss out

  821. on

  822. rather than

  823. what you're

  824. going to

  825. gain

  826. by trusting

  827. God

  828. and his

  829. word

  830. and obeying

  831. him

  832. but just

  833. imagine

  834. the kind

  835. of community

  836. that if they

  837. follow the ten

  838. words

  839. what it would

  840. be like

  841. you know

  842. you would

  843. never have

  844. to lock

  845. your door

  846. because there

  847. would be

  848. no theft

  849. you would

  850. never have

  851. to fear

  852. going out

  853. at night

  854. because there's

  855. no murder

  856. families

  857. would be

  858. in harmony

  859. because people

  860. are honouring

  861. father and

  862. mother

  863. it would be

  864. a society

  865. of justice

  866. and integrity

  867. where you can

  868. trust whatever

  869. anyone says

  870. and also

  871. there would be

  872. no workaholic

  873. bosses driving

  874. you into the

  875. ground

  876. this is a place

  877. of freedom

  878. there would be

  879. no lawyers

  880. actually

  881. and no police

  882. probably

  883. some of us

  884. may think

  885. that's a good

  886. thing

  887. some of us

  888. may not

  889. but it's a place

  890. of freedom

  891. and life

  892. any command

  893. in scripture

  894. forgive

  895. those who've

  896. hurt you

  897. don't watch

  898. porn

  899. don't sleep

  900. with your

  901. girlfriend

  902. pray

  903. share the

  904. gospel

  905. every command

  906. is for your

  907. good

  908. always

  909. do we

  910. believe that

  911. because

  912. God wants

  913. to change

  914. our hearts

  915. so that it

  916. goes from

  917. here

  918. to here

  919. and changes

  920. us

  921. so what I

  922. want us

  923. to do

  924. now

  925. is

  926. I actually

  927. want us

  928. to stop

  929. for a minute

  930. and I want

  931. you to take

  932. a minute

  933. to reflect

  934. if you're

  935. with someone

  936. you can just

  937. discuss

  938. with the

  939. person

  940. next to

  941. you

  942. but I've

  943. got a

  944. couple

  945. of questions

  946. that we're

  947. going to

  948. show on

  949. the slide

  950. that I

  951. want you

  952. to look

  953. at

  954. how is

  955. God

  956. calling

  957. you to

  958. obey

  959. him

  960. right at

  961. this

  962. time

  963. and how

  964. do you

  965. view

  966. his

  967. commands

  968. do you

  969. view

  970. what he's

  971. calling

  972. you as

  973. something

  974. that's

  975. to give

  976. you life

  977. or

  978. restrictive

  979. why do

  980. you see

  981. that

  982. why don't

  983. you

  984. and if

  985. you're

  986. not a

  987. Christian

  988. whose

  989. words

  990. do you

  991. rely on

  992. to help

  993. you live

  994. well

  995. and then

  996. how is

  997. that

  998. working

  999. for you

  1000. so

  1001. if

  1002. you're

  1003. by

  1004. yourself

  1005. I encourage

  1006. you to

  1007. take a

  1008. pen

  1009. write

  1010. down

  1011. your

  1012. answers

  1013. if

  1014. you're

  1015. with

  1016. someone

  1017. take

  1018. the

  1019. time

  1020. to

  1021. reflect

  1022. and

  1023. discuss

  1024. and

  1025. we'll

  1026. come

  1027. back

  1028. in

  1029. a

  1030. couple

  1031. of

  1032. minutes

  1033. time

  1034. Thank you.

  1035. Thank you.

  1036. Thank you.

  1037. Thank you.

  1038. Thank you.

  1039. Thank you.

  1040. Thank you.

  1041. Thank you.

  1042. Thank you.

  1043. Thank you.

  1044. Thank you.

  1045. Thank you.

  1046. Thank you.

  1047. Thank you.

  1048. Thank you.

  1049. Thank you.

  1050. Thank you.

  1051. Thank you.

  1052. Thank you.

  1053. Thank you.

  1054. Thank you.

1055. And like you and God.

  1056. And we go.

  1057. Thank you.

  1058. Thank you.

  1059. Thank you.

  1060. Thank you.

  1061. Thank you.

  1062. Thank you.

  1063. Thank you.

  1064. Thank you.
