  1. We are not going to be continuing on in Ephesians.

  2. Our pastor George, it's a convenient table,

  3. our pastor George is currently on a study leave in the Holy Land.

  4. He'll get back this upcoming week.

  5. So this morning we'll be in 2 Corinthians 9, verses 6 to 15.

    2 Corinthians 9:6–15

  6. That is the section that Matt read for us.

  7. This morning we're going to talk about money.

  8. A good pastor always feels a bit uncomfortable with talking about money

  9. and preaching about money because his income comes from the tithes of the people.

  10. And let me just say, if that marks a good pastor, our pastor is excellent

  11. because our pastor has so much discomfort in talking about that,

  12. he's pawned off the sermon to me.

  13. His underling.

  14. And he is so excellent that he's not even in this room or the city.

  15. In fact, he's in another continent.

  16. Our pastor is fantastic.

  17. Listen, that's not actually how it went down.

  18. George, when he was leaving a few weeks ago,

  19. he gave us a couple passages to pick from.

  20. And this was one that felt like the Lord, out of all of them,

  21. said, give it a shot.

  22. Precisely because it made me feel uncomfortable.

  23. Talking about money can be dicey, especially for a preacher.

  24. Except that when I began to dig into this text

  25. and started to see what it had to say,

  26. realized that this text is less about money,

  27. although it most certainly is about money and giving.

  28. But this text, in fact, is about radical, loving, transformative,

  29. expressive, imitating discipleship of Jesus Christ.

  30. To be a disciple of Jesus is to be rich.

  31. And I'll just say this right off the bat.

  32. To be a disciple of Jesus Christ is to be rich.

  33. Why?

  34. Because God has sent Jesus, his son,

  35. to earth to pay for our sins completely.

  36. To ransom us from the grave completely.

  37. And to not just save us from something,

  38. but to give us something.

  39. New life.

  40. The resurrection of the dead.

  41. That we are now sons and daughters of the living God.

  42. That our cup is always not to the edge of the top.

  43. It's overflowing.

  44. We are blessed people.

  45. To be a disciple is to be rich.

  46. But to be a disciple also is to be an imitator of Christ.

  47. It means following the example and direction of our King Jesus.

  48. It means recognizing that we have been bought with a price

  49. and that the life we now live is not our own.

  50. I think for some of us here,

  51. we need to hear that.

  52. That the life you live,

  53. if you call yourself a Christian,

  54. if you have confessed faith in Jesus Christ,

  55. that he is your Lord and Savior,

  56. he has forgiven you of your sins,

  57. your life is not your own.

  58. His ways always lead to blessing and praise towards him,

  59. but they are his ways,

  60. not our ways.

  61. We don't enter into this relationship with God

  62. only to start calling the shots.

  63. He has laid out for us the way he wants us to live.

  64. And including in that is how we approach money

  65. and how we approach our resources,

  66. how we approach our talents,

  67. all the commodities that we may possess.

  68. And really the attitude towards those things

  69. as a Christian disciple of Jesus Christ

  70. is an attitude of generosity.

  71. So our text today, we'll jump right into that.

  72. We'll address that.

  73. It'll look at three things.

  74. Excuse me.

  75. It'll look at the motivation for being generous,

  76. the results of being generous,

  77. and the foundation of what generosity is all about.

  78. So we have the motivation of generosity,

  79. the results of generosity,

  80. and the foundation of what generosity truly is.

  81. But first let me pray

  82. and then we'll just jump into the text.

  83. Lord God, it's a dicey subject.

  84. Pastors in North America have not got the best rep

  85. for teaching on money.

  86. Lord, the heart of this text is generosity.

  87. Help us to see with your eyes,

  88. to be moved by your Holy Spirit.

  89. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  90. Amen.

  91. So before we get into the text,

  92. a bit of a background with what's happening here.

  93. Chapter 9, our text today,

  94. verses 6 to 15,

  95. is nestled within chapter 8 and 9,

  96. obviously.

  97. But what's not obvious is that

  98. Paul is making an appeal

  99. to the Corinthian people

  100. about a collection for the saints in Jerusalem.

  101. Paul here is essentially making

  102. a pitch for famine and poverty relief.

  103. So we know from the early chapters of Acts

  104. that in Jerusalem,

  105. the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost

  106. and there was a huge conversion.

  107. Thousands of people converted.

  108. But we don't necessarily see the fallout.

  109. We get a bit of it here.

  110. Undoubtedly, the saints in Jerusalem

  111. would have been ostracized from their family

  112. if their whole families didn't come to faith.

  113. Kicked out of their families.

  114. If they had businesses,

  115. it's likely that their businesses

  116. would have suffered.

  117. If they had any kind of employment

  118. with somebody who was not a believer,

  119. it's likely that they would have lost their job.

  120. They would be pushed to the fringes of society.

  121. You know, this actually happens a lot

  122. in the world today.

  123. Not so much in our culture,

  124. but in places like Iran or in China,

  125. places like India.

  126. The Jerusalemites were poor.

  127. They were very, very poor.

  128. And Paul here is making a big pitch,

  129. not only to the Corinthians,

  130. but also to the Macedonian church.

  131. We see that at the beginning of chapter 8.

  132. Macedonians were poor themselves,

  133. but he's making a pitch to them

  134. for this famine relief.

  135. And then he comes to the Corinthians,

  136. who have an abundance

  137. and have been collecting funds

  138. for over a year,

  139. but for whatever reason,

  140. are struggling with being generous.

  141. They're struggling with being ready,

  142. as the text says.

  143. Something has to do with,

  144. something about their lack of readiness

  145. must have had to do with

  146. not being cheerful in their giving.

  147. Maybe their zeal that they once had

  148. was waning.

  149. They were becoming reluctant

  150. in their giving.

  151. And it's this context

  152. that we find our text

  153. and bring us to our first point,

  154. the motivation for being generous.

  155. So look with me in chapter 9.

  156. We'll start in verse 6.

  157. And we'll go to verse 9.

  158. The point is this.

  159. Whoever sows sparingly

  160. will reap sparingly.

  161. And whoever sows bountifully

  162. will also reap bountifully.

  163. Each one must give

  164. as he has decided in his heart,

  165. not reluctantly or under compulsion,

  166. for God loves a cheerful giver.

  167. And God is able to make

  168. all grace abound to you

  169. so that having all sufficiency

  170. in all things,

  171. at all times,

  172. you may abound in every good work.

  173. As it is written,

  174. He has distributed freely,

  175. He has given to the poor,

  176. His righteousness endures forever.

  177. He who supplies seed to the sower

  178. and bread for food

  179. will supply and multiply their seed

  180. for sowing and increase

  181. the harvest of your righteousness.

  182. Paul makes it clear

  183. that what he is making an appeal to,

  184. this famine relief,

  185. is not some sort of tax.

  186. We see this if we go up

  187. just one verse in verse 5 of chapter 9.

  188. And he says,

  189. So Paul here plays on

  190. this imagery found throughout Proverbs

  191. of sowing and reaping.

  192. It's full, full of that imagery

  193. throughout Proverbs.

  194. And he's calling the Corinthians

  195. back to the scriptures,

  196. back to the heart

  197. that God so desires

  198. for His people.

  199. So Paul encourages the Corinthians

  200. to be generous

  201. in order that they may reap a bounty.

  202. What kind of bounty?

  203. Well, we'll see in verse 10.

  204. Notice that he doesn't say anything

  205. about a dollar amount.

  206. So in the Old Testament temple system,

  207. a tenth was what was required.

  208. But here Paul simply says

  209. that it is a personal matter

  210. and that personal choice

  211. must not be reluctantly given

  212. nor given under pressure.

  213. Why?

  214. Because God loves a cheerful giver.

  215. Here's the motivation for generosity.

  216. It is to reciprocate God's grace

  217. that He has given to us.

  218. And we know this because,

  219. like I mentioned,

  220. this section is nestled

  221. within a broader section

  222. of chapter 8 and 9.

  223. And in chapter 8, verse 9,

  224. this is what it says.

  225. For you know the grace

  226. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  227. that though He was rich,

  228. yet for your sake He became poor

  229. so that you by His poverty

  230. might become rich.

  231. So what we have here

  232. is Paul making an appeal

  233. to the Corinthians

  234. to remember the example

  235. of Christ Himself

  236. that He gave Himself up willingly,

  237. not through some kind of compulsion,

  238. but He sought joy

  239. to go to the cross

  240. to endure the sufferings.

  241. And that should be

  242. our attitude,

  243. our motivation

  244. to give generously.

  245. And this results

  246. in two things.

  247. The cheerfulness,

  248. God loves a cheerful giver,

  249. but also faith.

  250. So let's look first

  251. at the cheerful giving.

  252. Why is reluctant giving

  253. such a big issue?

  254. Why is it?

  255. I mean,

  256. if it results

  257. in the same thing,

  258. if you reluctantly

  259. give somebody $5

  260. or joyfully give somebody $5,

  261. they have $5 in their hand.

  262. I mean,

  263. the ends

  264. kind of work out.

  265. They both have

  266. the $5.

  267. But why is there something

  268. not okay

  269. with reluctant giving?

  270. Well, remember,

  271. we talked about

  272. how this text

  273. is about discipleship.

  274. And to be a disciple

  275. of Jesus Christ

  276. means to follow

  277. in His ways

  278. to be saved by Him,

  279. to follow in His ways,

  280. empowered by His Spirit.

  281. And this is not following

  282. the example of Christ.

  283. Like I mentioned,

  284. Christ did not

  285. give Himself up

  286. for us

  287. reluctantly.

  288. It did not,

  289. in one sense,

  290. it pained God,

  291. but in another sense,

  292. it pleased God

  293. that our suffering

  294. should be laid

  295. on the Messiah.

  296. That God gives

  297. freely and graciously,

  298. not reluctantly.

  299. And therefore,

  300. reluctant giving

  301. is not God honoring.

  302. And by the way,

  303. you might get

  304. a $5 bill,

  305. no matter what,

  306. from a reluctant giver

  307. and a cheerful giver.

  308. But that reluctant giving,

  309. it might be $5,

  310. but it comes with

  311. some strings attached,

  312. doesn't it?

  313. Or you feel like

  314. you might be

  315. in their debt.

  316. Or that person

  317. might scoff at you

  318. and look down

  319. their nose at you.

  320. Or maybe they just

  321. don't go through

  322. with it

  323. and take the money away

  324. and then you're

  325. left with nothing.

  326. But the point is,

  327. there is a difference

  328. between reluctant giving

  329. and generous giving.

  330. This giving

  331. that we're supposed

  332. to engage

  333. in this cheerful giving

  334. is voluntary.

  335. It's what Paul says

  336. in chapter 8,

  337. verse 3.

  338. It is given freely.

  339. We looked at it

  340. in chapter 9,

  341. verse 5.

  342. And generously,

  343. excuse me,

  344. in verse 6.

  345. So giving cheerfully

  346. to bring gifts

  347. with joy

  348. that come

  349. from a place

  350. of blessing

  351. and not with

  352. tight-fistedness

  353. that harbors

  354. resentment.

  355. That is what God wants.

  356. Growing up,

  357. I would hear

  358. every now and then,

  359. God loves a cheerful giver.

  360. And I just thought,

  361. it's just,

  362. it's like you're

  363. taking the edge off

  364. of asking people

  365. for money

  366. to,

  367. whether it be pastors

  368. or ministry leaders.

  369. But no,

  370. no,

  371. it is,

  372. it is,

  373. it is a call

  374. to follow

  375. in the very example

  376. of Jesus Christ himself.

  377. To give cheerfully.

  378. Cheerful giving

  379. and being a miser

  380. don't mix.

  381. But remember,

  382. if you're feeling

  383. like,

  384. oh,

  385. I don't want to give

  386. if I'm not giving cheerfully,

  387. understand

  388. that Paul is saying

  389. it is voluntary.

  390. You need to decide

  391. what you're willing

  392. to give yourself.

  393. Now,

  394. when we give to the church,

  395. all the resources

  396. come together

  397. and we have

  398. a godly council

  399. and a godly pastor

  400. that try their best

  401. to seek the Lord

  402. and ask for the Holy Spirit

  403. to lead

  404. and then invest

  405. and to bless

  406. in the different ministries

  407. in our church,

  408. in the city,

  409. beyond,

  410. with our missionaries.

  411. So,

  412. you know,

  413. there is this aspect

  414. of just a communal

  415. giving that ends up

  416. happening to the church.

  417. It's like

  418. more buying power,

  419. right?

  420. We put all our pot

  421. together.

  422. But ultimately,

  423. ultimately,

  424. you guys are individuals

  425. and the call is

  426. to make that call

  427. yourself.

  428. But make sure

  429. that it's done

  430. cheerfully.

  431. And again,

  432. why do we do this?

  433. Because God himself

  434. is a cheerful giver.

  435. But you might

  436. not feel like

  437. you can give much

  438. or you're reluctant

  439. to give.

  440. Or you might

  441. have this feeling

  442. inside that

  443. if I give,

  444. I will suffer.

  445. If I give,

  446. I won't have enough

  447. for bills,

  448. I won't have enough

  449. for potential car repair,

  450. I'm hoping to,

  451. you know,

  452. have some leisure activity,

  453. vacations coming up.

  454. Or maybe your kids,

  455. you know,

  456. like you've,

  457. you've budgeted

  458. a certain amount of money

  459. to put your kids

  460. in sports or activities.

  461. Whatever it may be,

  462. whatever it may be,

  463. the call is still

  464. to give generously.

  465. Again,

  466. but I'm not going to say to you,

  467. you have to give this amount.

  468. That's between you

  469. and the Lord.

  470. Seriously.

  471. Remember,

  472. Paul is making this appeal

  473. to the Corinthians

  474. who are in abundance,

  475. but he's also made the appeal

  476. to the Macedonians

  477. who are poor themselves.

  478. So,

  479. it's hard to be

  480. a disciple of Jesus.

  481. It is hard

  482. to counter

  483. our flesh,

  484. to counter

  485. the devil,

  486. and most certainly

  487. to counter

  488. the world

  489. and its influences.

  490. There are real

  491. and large obstacles

  492. standing in the way

  493. of walking with Jesus.

  494. We can keep

  495. this religious zeal

  496. for only so long,

  497. but you'll get wearied

  498. or you'll get worried.

  499. And just like

  500. the Corinthians,

  501. your excitement,

  502. your drive

  503. for the Lord

  504. will start to wane.

  505. And that's just

  506. a part of it.

  507. But,

  508. what do we have here?

  509. We have,

  510. in verse 8,

  511. this wonderful

  512. declaration of,

  513. sorry,

  514. in verse 6 and 7,

  515. this wonderful

  516. kind of charge

  517. to give generously.

  518. But then in verse 8,

  519. this wonderful

  520. kind of declaration

  521. by Paul

  522. that God,

  523. if you give,

  524. He will provide.

  525. Look with me

  526. at verse 8.

  527. And God is able

  528. to make all grace

  529. abound to you

  530. so that having

  531. all sufficiency

  532. in all things

  533. at all times

  534. you may abound

  535. or literally

  536. overflow

  537. in every good work.

  538. It's a bit of a wordplay

  539. going on there.

  540. You aren't able

  541. as yourself

  542. to change

  543. every problem

  544. that you see.

  545. Our church

  546. isn't able

  547. to address

  548. every issue

  549. or problem

  550. that we encounter.

  551. But the areas

  552. that we encounter

  553. that God

  554. is leading us to,

  555. He will,

  556. He will provide

  557. for us.

  558. Not so that we

  559. can store it up,

  560. so that we can be

  561. a conduit

  562. of blessing.

  563. But this requires

  564. faith.

  565. And that's hard.

  566. Because we are

  567. potentially putting

  568. ourselves out on the line

  569. when we give

  570. in such a way

  571. that hurts.

  572. But He is saying,

  573. listen,

  574. give generously.

  575. You'll reap generously.

  576. But understand,

  577. God will supply.

  578. Maybe the supply

  579. will be

  580. in the form

  581. of other people

  582. giving to you.

  583. That will require

  584. some humility.

  585. That's hard.

  586. It's easier to give

  587. than to receive

  588. for most of us.

  589. Maybe it will be

  590. one of those things

  591. where

  592. what He will end up doing

  593. is He will

  594. challenge you

  595. to refashion

  596. your life

  597. and priorities.

  598. So that certain

  599. areas of your life

  600. that previously

  601. you could afford

  602. or that you could

  603. devote time to.

  604. Because remember,

  605. this isn't just

  606. a money thing.

  607. This is a resource thing

  608. that you have time

  609. to put towards.

  610. Or certain talents

  611. that you've used

  612. for yourself.

  613. Now you're being

  614. challenged to use them

  615. for the benefit

  616. of other people.

  617. All of those situations

  618. might cause you

  619. to refashion

  620. your life a little bit.

  621. But again,

  622. God will provide.

  623. All sufficiency

  624. doesn't mean

  625. some sufficiency.

  626. It is absolute.

  627. We need to trust God.

  628. This is His word

  629. and we are disciples.

  630. Again,

  631. disciples of Him.

  632. Listen,

  633. I'm talking like,

  634. oh,

  635. I've figured out.

  636. Like,

  637. I am in the boat

  638. with you guys.

  639. And sometimes

  640. it is hard

  641. to put our faith

  642. and trust

  643. and hope in God.

  644. But sometimes

  645. I think

  646. that when Jesus says,

  647. if you have the faith

  648. of a mustard seed,

  649. He actually means

  650. the faith of a mustard seed.

  651. But who is that faith in?

  652. It's in Jesus.

  653. And it says here

  654. that He is able,

  655. verse 8,

  656. to make all grace

  657. abound to you.

  658. So I challenge you guys

  659. that as you think

  660. of generously giving,

  661. generously give,

  662. trusting that

  663. the God

  664. that created

  665. the universe,

  666. the God that did not

  667. withhold His own Son,

  668. will provide for us.

  669. We don't know how,

  670. but He will.

  671. He gives us His word

  672. that He will provide.

  673. I'll just pause

  674. really quickly here.

  675. If you think

  676. that this is

  677. some kind of,

  678. I don't know,

  679. like,

  680. I could potentially

  681. see this,

  682. like,

  683. we turn some words around,

  684. like,

  685. maybe this is

  686. a talk

  687. that a cult leader

  688. would give.

  689. Like,

  690. just give me the money

  691. and God

  692. or whatever deity,

  693. like,

  694. you will be blessed.

  695. But,

  696. I would encourage you guys

  697. that if you are truly,

  698. if you are truly moving

  699. in the direction

  700. of faith and trust

  701. and hope in Jesus,

  702. to hold God's feet

  703. to the fire,

  704. so to speak.

  705. God is,

  706. He is not

  707. a distant God.

  708. He is ever close.

  709. And,

  710. He knows the things

  711. we are going to ask

  712. before we ask them.

  713. So,

  714. I would challenge you

  715. to do your best

  716. to push away

  717. the skepticism

  718. and to look

  719. to be generous givers.

  720. There's a wonderful,

  721. wonderful,

  722. wonderful story

  723. in 1 Kings.

  724. It's the story

  725. of Elijah and the widow.

  726. And,

  727. this is precisely

  728. this generous giving

  729. that results

  730. in cheerfulness

  731. and an increased

  732. faith in God's provision

  733. that is talked

  734. about here.

  735. We see it

  736. in 1 Kings

    1 Kings 17 chapter mention

  737. chapter 17.

  738. I'll read this to you.

  739. You don't have to turn there.

  740. So,

  741. this is in light

  742. of a famine

  743. and a drought

  744. in Israel.

  745. And,

  746. this is what it says.

  747. Then the word of the Lord

  748. came to him,

  749. Elijah,

  750. saying,

  751. Arise,

  752. go to Zarephath,

  753. which belongs to Sidon,

  754. and dwell there.

  755. Behold,

  756. I have commanded

  757. a widow there

  758. to feed you.

  759. So,

  760. he arose

  761. and went to Zarephath.

  762. And,

  763. when he came

  764. to the gate

  765. of the city,

  766. behold,

  767. a widow was there

  768. gathering sticks.

  769. And,

  770. he called her

  771. and said,

  772. bring me a little water

  773. in a vessel

  774. that I may drink.

  775. And,

  776. as she was going

  777. to bring it,

  778. he called to her

  779. and said,

  780. bring me a morsel

  781. of bread

  782. in your hand.

  783. But,

  784. the widow said,

  785. as the Lord

  786. your God lives,

  787. I have nothing baked,

  788. only a handful

  789. of flour

  790. in a jar

  791. and a little oil

  792. in a jug.

  793. And,

  794. now I am gathering

  795. a couple of sticks

  796. that I may go in

  797. and prepare it

  798. for myself and my son

  799. that we may eat it

  800. and die.

  801. And,

  802. Elijah said to her,

  803. do not fear,

  804. go and do as

  805. you have said,

  806. but first make me

  807. a little cake of it

  808. and bring it to me.

  809. And,

  810. afterward,

  811. make something

  812. for yourself

  813. and your son.

  814. For,

  815. thus says the Lord,

  816. the God of Israel,

  817. the jar of flour

  818. shall not be spent

  819. and the jug of oil

  820. shall not be empty

  821. until the day

  822. that the Lord

  823. sends rain

  824. upon the earth.

  825. And she went

  826. and did as Elijah said,

  827. and she and he

  828. and her household

  829. ate for many days.

  830. The jar of flour

  831. was not spent,

  832. neither did the jug

  833. of oil become empty,

  834. according to the word

  835. of the Lord

  836. that he spoke

  837. by Elijah.

  838. God,

  839. he doesn't fool us.

  840. He's not a trickster.

  841. If he says it,

  842. he says it,

  843. he means it.

  844. He makes the promise

  845. and he follows through

  846. because he is able to.

  847. It's a wonderful,

  848. wonderful story.

  849. So,

  850. giving generously,

  851. the motivation

  852. for giving generously

  853. is in light

  854. of what Christ

  855. has done for us,

  856. the generous God

  857. giving to us,

  858. and it results

  859. in cheerfulness,

  860. it results

  861. in increased faith.

  862. But it also results

  863. in a couple other things,

  864. not for us,

  865. but for others.

  866. So you see

  867. what's happening

  868. is that

  869. there is

  870. trust in God

  871. that results,

  872. there's blessing

  873. from God

  874. that results

  875. in thanksgiving

  876. to God,

  877. and that we in turn

  878. put that blessing

  879. to other people

  880. that increases

  881. their faith

  882. and our faith,

  883. which then

  884. helps people

  885. to trust in God's

  886. blessing and provision

  887. as they give.

  888. good time

  889. to throw up

  890. that first picture

  891. if you have it.

  892. My drawing.

  893. Oh, there it is.

  894. So I scribbled this

  895. on a post-it.

  896. Andrew just

  897. made me not look

  898. goofy.

  899. So,

  900. this is essentially

  901. what we're going to see.

  902. This is what

  903. generosity results in.

  904. So we have generosity

  905. and it results

  906. in thanksgiving

  907. and faith.

  908. And we'll see here

  909. that blessing

  910. will ensue.

  911. The Jerusalemites

  912. will be blessed.

  913. They will be

  914. physically blessed.

  915. They will receive

  916. from Paul

  917. the gathered

  918. famine relief

  919. from the Macedonian

  920. church,

  921. the Corinthian church,

  922. and they will have

  923. their needs met.

  924. And then they will

  925. in turn

  926. thank God

  927. and bless God

  928. for that generosity.

  929. And then them,

  930. they themselves

  931. will give

  932. out of their blessing.

  933. And then we'll have

  934. this continual

  935. growth

  936. in thanksgiving

  937. and blessing

  938. and faith

  939. and generosity.

  940. continues

  941. and grows

  942. and grows

  943. and grows.

  944. It really truly is

  945. like just a little

  946. yeast

  947. that spreads.

  948. So,

  949. look with me

  950. in verse 11

  951. to 14.

  952. You will be

  953. enriched

  954. in every way

  955. to be generous

  956. in every way

  957. which through us,

  958. that's Paul,

  959. the apostle,

  960. talking about

  961. collecting the money,

  962. through us

  963. will produce

  964. thanksgiving to God.

  965. Thanksgiving to God

  966. from whom?

  967. The Jerusalemites.

  968. For the ministry

  969. of this service

  970. is not only supplying

  971. the needs

  972. of the saints,

  973. but is also

  974. overflowing

  975. in many thanksgivings

  976. to God.

  977. By their approval

  978. of this service,

  979. they will glorify God

  980. because of

  981. your submission

  982. that comes

  983. from your confession

  984. of the gospel of Christ

  985. and the generosity

  986. of your contribution

  987. for them

  988. and for all others

  989. while they long

  990. for you

  991. and pray for you

  992. because of the

  993. surpassing grace

  994. of God

  995. upon you.

  996. What ends up

  997. happening

  998. is the Jerusalemites

  999. have their needs

  1000. met

  1001. and the result

  1002. is

  1003. thanksgiving

  1004. and praise

  1005. to God.

  1006. Not only that,

  1007. they'll turn around

  1008. and they'll begin

  1009. praying

  1010. for the Corinthians.

  1011. Their affections

  1012. towards the

  1013. Corinthian people,

  1014. it will grow.

  1015. Corinth

  1016. is very far away

  1017. from Jerusalem.

  1018. Jerusalem.

  1019. Maybe these people

  1020. potentially could have met.

1021. My guess is not a chance.

  1022. But the point is

  1023. there's people

  1024. that are called

  1025. by the same God

  1026. that are brothers

  1027. and sisters in Christ

  1028. in Asia Minor

1029. and in the ancient Near East

  1030. and they have affection

  1031. for one another,

  1032. brotherly love

  1033. for one another.

  1034. They're unified together.

1035. But all of a sudden

  1036. it says

  1037. that the Jerusalemites,

  1038. they're going to be

  1039. praying for the Corinthians

  1040. and longing for them.

  1041. So this generosity

  1042. results not in

  1043. our own personal growth

  1044. in what it means

  1045. to be cheerful

  1046. and our personal faith,

  1047. but it will result

1048. in their needs being met

1049. and their praise to God.

  1050. And in verse 12,

  1051. Paul says this,

  1052. for the ministry

  1053. of this service

  1054. is not only,

1055. put your finger on that,

  1056. not only supplying

1057. the needs of the saints,

  1058. but also overflowing

  1059. in many thanksgiving

  1060. to God.

  1061. That not only,

  1062. but also,

  1063. it's taking something

  1064. that's good

  1065. and contrasting it

  1066. with something

  1067. that's better.

1068. So not only are you

  1069. supplying the needs,

  1070. but also

  1071. it's bringing thanksgiving

  1072. and glory to God.

  1073. That's the ultimate thing

  1074. when we're talking

  1075. about being generous givers.

  1076. It glorifies God.

  1077. He gets the praise.

  1078. He gets the honor.

  1079. It's wonderful.

  1080. People's faith grows.

  1081. Generosity ensues.

1082. All things are from God

  1083. and for God.

  1084. God enriches

  1085. for generosity

  1086. which results

  1087. in thanksgivings

  1088. to Him.

  1089. So the Jerusalemites,

  1090. although they themselves

1091. are unable to repay the money,

1092. not that that was a condition

1093. upon which they receive the money,

  1094. but instead they reciprocate

  1095. again with affections

  1096. and prayers.

  1097. And the wonderful thing

  1098. about this

1099. is that although we are

  1100. a local church

  1101. and like we're a part

  1102. of the Anglican Network

  1103. in Canada,

1104. which is a part of

  1105. the Global Anglican Communion,

  1106. we are connected

  1107. by virtue of faith

  1108. in Jesus Christ

  1109. to every true

  1110. Orthodox Christian

  1111. that lives today

1112. and that has ever lived

  1113. before us,

1114. we are unified with them.

  1115. And the thing is

1116. when we grow in unity

1117. and we grow in affection

  1118. with people,

  1119. it transforms the world.

  1120. So not only

  1121. is the result personal,

  1122. but it benefits others.

1123. It actually benefits the world.

  1124. In John 17,

    John 17:20–21

  1125. verses 20 to 21,

1126. Jesus in his high priestly prayer

  1127. prays this,

1128. I do not ask for these also,

  1129. but also for those

1130. who will believe in me

  1131. through your word,

1132. that they may all be one

  1133. just as you, Father,

  1134. are in me

  1135. and I in you,

1136. that they also may be in us

  1137. so that the world

  1138. may believe

1139. that you have sent me.

  1140. When we are generous,

1141. it proclaims to the world

1142. that there is a God

1143. and that he has sent his son,

  1144. Jesus Christ,

1145. and that God desires to bless.

  1146. So wherever the church

  1147. has been truly walking

1148. in the way God has called her to walk,

1149. there has been incredible blessings

  1150. for the world.

  1151. Hospitals have been built,

  1152. children have been educated,

  1153. widows and orphans

  1154. have been cared for,

1155. lepers have been tended to,

  1156. oftentimes,

1157. at the peril of the Christians

  1158. looking after them.

1159. It is a giving of themselves

  1160. cheerfully.

  1161. One example,

  1162. there is a letter,

1163. it's called the Epistle of Diognetus.

1164. It comes from the second century

  1165. and it talks about

1166. what the Christians look like.

  1167. It's a longer epistle,

1168. I'm only going to read

1169. a couple of the verses

  1170. and it says,

  1171. of Christians,

1172. they dwell in their own countries

  1173. but only as sojourners.

  1174. They bear their share

1175. in all things as citizens

1176. and they endure all hardships

  1177. as strangers.

  1178. Every foreign country

1179. is a fatherland to them

1180. and every fatherland is foreign.

1181. They marry like all other men

  1182. and they beget children

1183. but they do not cast away

  1184. their offspring.

1185. They have their meals in common

  1186. but not their wives.

1187. They find themselves in the flesh

1188. and yet they live not after the flesh,

1189. they obey the established laws

1190. and they surpass the laws

  1191. in their own lives.

  1192. They love all men

1193. and they are persecuted by all.

  1194. They are in beggary

1195. and yet they make many rich.

1196. They are in want of all things

1197. and yet they abound in all things.

  1198. So what happens

  1199. when brothers and sisters

  1200. dwell together in unity,

  1201. when they give generously,

1202. when they put their faith

1203. and trust and hope in Jesus,

1204. trusting that he will provide

  1205. for the things

1206. that he has called them

1207. to do as his disciples.

  1208. This last bit,

1209. we have the motivation for generosity,

1210. we have the results of generosity,

1211. but the ultimate foundation of generosity

  1212. is Christ himself.

1213. Look with me at verse 15.

  1214. Thanks be to God

  1215. for his inexpressible gift.

  1216. This inexpressible gift,

  1217. even though Paul here,

  1218. he talks about,

  1219. excuse me,

  1220. he talks about

  1221. how the Jerusalemites

  1222. will praise the Lord

  1223. because of the submission

  1224. of the Corinthians,

1225. because they have put their hope

  1226. and trust

  1227. and they're walking

  1228. in obedience

  1229. and faithfulness to Christ

  1230. in verse 13.

  1231. But ultimately,

  1232. the thanks

1233. that Paul gives to God

  1234. for his inexpressible gift

  1235. is Jesus himself.

  1236. Again,

  1237. chapter 8,

  1238. verse 9.

1239. For you know the grace

1240. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1241. that though he was rich,

  1242. yet for your sake

  1243. he became poor,

  1244. so that you,

  1245. by his poverty,

  1246. might become rich.

  1247. Jesus,

1248. when we put our hope

  1249. and faith in him,

  1250. again,

  1251. he saves us

  1252. from sin

  1253. and from death.

  1254. He gives us

  1255. a new family.

  1256. He unites us

  1257. with people

  1258. in far off lands

  1259. and far off parts

  1260. of our city,

  1261. with neighbors,

  1262. with relatives.

  1263. But the ultimate,

  1264. inexpressible gift

  1265. that God gives us

  1266. is himself.

  1267. We are made

  1268. to worship God.

  1269. We are.

  1270. And when you don't

  1271. worship God,

  1272. you don't stop

  1273. worshiping.

  1274. You just worship

  1275. other things.

  1276. But those other things

  1277. are not meant

  1278. to be worshiped

  1279. and they cause

  1280. a strife.

  1281. And in our

  1282. affluent city,

  1283. we struggle

  1284. with money,

  1285. whether it is

  1286. coming from

1287. a spot of great wealth

  1288. or great poverty.

  1289. Money is something

  1290. that is tough,

  1291. that we struggle with.

  1292. All too often

  1293. we worship.

  1294. But if we,

  1295. as God's people,

  1296. can understand

  1297. that he has given

  1298. us himself

  1299. in Jesus,

  1300. that we can

  1301. worship him

  1302. and know him,

  1303. and not just

  1304. know him,

  1305. but be known

  1306. by him,

  1307. warts and all,

  1308. like genuinely,

  1309. that we don't have

  1310. to strive

  1311. for more money,

  1312. we don't have to

  1313. strive for a better

  1314. reputation,

  1315. for a better job,

  1316. for more obedient

  1317. children,

  1318. for whatever it

  1319. may be,

  1320. that will somehow

  1321. give us credibility.

  1322. We don't have to

  1323. strive for that

  1324. because we have

  1325. credibility in Jesus

  1326. that we are already

  1327. operating at an

  1328. overflow,

  1329. not a surplus,

  1330. like at an overflow,

  1331. overflow,

  1332. overflow,

  1333. overflow,

  1334. because we have him.

  1335. That will change

  1336. the way we live.

  1337. And that is what

  1338. is offered to us

  1339. as Christians.

  1340. If you are not

  1341. a Christian,

  1342. this is the day,

  1343. because tomorrow

  1344. is not guaranteed.

  1345. It isn't.

  1346. Tomorrow may be

  1347. guaranteed for some

  1348. people,

  1349. but it's not

  1350. necessarily guaranteed

  1351. for you.

  1352. So I'd encourage you

  1353. to put your faith

  1354. and hope and trust

  1355. in God,

1356. and he will give you

  1357. himself,

  1358. and you will know

  1359. what it truly means

1360. to live as a human

  1361. being,

  1362. made in the image

  1363. of God,

  1364. made for God,

  1365. known by God

  1366. because of Jesus

  1367. Christ and what

  1368. he has done.

  1369. Lord,

  1370. thank you so much

  1371. for the call

  1372. to be generous.

  1373. Now,

  1374. this call to be

  1375. generous isn't

  1376. a sly way of

  1377. getting more money

  1378. into the church

  1379. coffers.

  1380. It is a call

  1381. to discipleship,

  1382. to be like Jesus

  1383. Christ,

  1384. who again,

  1385. chapter 8,

  1386. verse 9,

  1387. the grace that

  1388. he has shown us,

  1389. though he was rich,

  1390. became poor,

  1391. that in his

  1392. poverty,

  1393. we might become

  1394. rich knowing you.

  1395. Lord,

  1396. transform our hearts.

1397. Help us to see this.

  1398. Help us to spur

  1399. one another on

  1400. in good works.

  1401. Help us to do

  1402. the good works

  1403. you called us to,

  1404. knowing that you

  1405. will supply our needs

1406. so that we will be

  1407. all sufficient

  1408. in all things

  1409. at all times

1410. to do every good work.

  1411. And Lord,

  1412. thank you so much

  1413. that all of this

  1414. is for your renown,

  1415. for your glory.

  1416. Lord,

  1417. help us to be

  1418. disciples of Jesus

  1419. that are truly,

  1420. truly gripped

  1421. by your gospel

  1422. and learning to live

  1423. for your glory.

  1424. In Jesus Christ's name,

  1425. Amen.
