  1. We read from Isaiah chapter 9, roughly 732 BC.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  2. I'd like to read now from Matthew chapter 4, roughly 28, 29 AD.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  3. Matthew 4 at verse 12.

  4. And you see, Matthew, the author, is capturing this beginning of Jesus' ministry, the first sermon.

  5. And he connects the ministry of Jesus and the message of Isaiah seamlessly.

  6. So Matthew chapter 4 at verse 12, and I'll read to the end of that chapter.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  7. When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee.

  8. Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali,

  9. to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah.

  10. Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way of the sea along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.

  11. The people living in darkness have seen a great light.

  12. On those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

  13. From that time on, Jesus began to preach.

  14. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.

  15. As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew.

  16. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

  17. Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will make you fishers of men.

  18. At once they left their nets and followed him.

  19. Going on from there, he saw two old other brothers, James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John.

  20. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets.

  21. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

  22. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom,

  23. and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

  24. News about him spread all over Syria.

  25. And people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases.

  26. Those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them.

  27. Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and the region across the Jordan followed him.

  28. Amen.

  29. Amen.

  30. And may God add to this reading of his word, his blessing.

  31. So we have this great text, this great promise of Isaiah chapter 9, fulfilled, yes, in the incarnation, the birth of Jesus.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  32. But notice that the gospel writer Matthew connects the fulfillment of the promise with the commencement of Jesus' preaching.

  33. That not only has he been born, but now he is beginning to preach.

  34. And that great promise that was recorded seven centuries earlier is being fulfilled.

  35. Crowds of people from all different places, all different backgrounds are coming to him.

  36. And finding the fulfillment of that promise.

  37. You see, our God keeps his word.

  38. He makes and he keeps promises.

  39. And his timing is perfect timing.

  40. Now, on my computer, when I log on, I get a notification.

  41. And the notification is, on this day in history.

  42. I love history.

  43. I love, and I was reminded yesterday that on the 1st of January, 1863, I should have known this, but I had to be reminded.

  44. But on that day, the Emancipation Proclamation came into force.

  45. Abraham Lincoln, a few months earlier, had declared.

  46. And he declared powerfully.

  47. He said that on the 1st day of January.

  48. See, this is in September.

  49. And he's looking ahead 100 days.

  50. He says, on that 1st day of September, in the year of our Lord, 1863,

  51. all persons held as slaves within any state or designated part of a state,

  52. the people whereof then be in rebellion against the United States,

  53. shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.

  54. A proclamation of freedom that would take effect 100 days in the future.

  55. And when that proclamation was issued, it was issued not just as words, but as words accompanied by power.

  56. And that's exactly what God's word is.

  57. Words accompanied with power.

  58. Because God has the power to achieve what he promises.

  59. So in 1863, on the 1st of January, the proclamation commenced with these words.

  60. Now, therefore, I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States,

  61. by virtue of the power in me vested as Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States.

  62. So he is saying, on this day, anyone held as a slave in these states

  63. will be then, thenceforward, and forever free.

  64. So it is a proclamation of freedom accompanied with all the power and the authority

  65. that he has as the Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army and the United States Navy.

  66. Turn with me for a moment back to Isaiah chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  67. And let's grasp something of the promise that is given

  68. and something of the power that accompanies this promise

  69. to see how God has a way of bringing into effect

  70. a message of hope, a message of encouragement,

  71. and a message of enthusiasm.

  72. And if you can leave with those three words in your mind at the start of this new year,

  73. hope, encouragement, and enthusiasm,

  74. then I think the message of Isaiah will be rooted in our hearts, in our minds,

  75. and we can look to see God working out his plan and his purpose.

  76. So we come to chapter 9,

  77. and if we want to emphasize hope, encouragement, and enthusiasm,

  78. it's a strange commencement, isn't it?

  79. Because we have a motif here,

  80. and this motif is characterized by three words that each begin with the letter D.

  81. The first word is defeat,

  82. the second word is darkness,

  83. and the third word is death.

  84. Not a promising start for a promise, is it?

  85. Defeat, darkness, and death.

  86. At the beginning of chapter 9,

  87. nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who are in distress.

  88. In the past, he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali.

  89. It's interesting that Matthew, when he begins to quote Isaiah 9,

  90. he quotes from the beginning,

  91. and he mentions Zebulun, and he mentions Naphtali,

  92. these places in the northern part of Israel, of the kingdom of Israel.

  93. And this is a place,

  94. and this is why we have an insight into the rough date of Isaiah 9,

  95. is because in 732 B.C.,

  96. the Assyrian Empire began to conquer the north.

  97. The Assyrians began to conquer these lands,

  98. and to absorb these lands into their empire.

  99. So this is a period of time

  100. where the people of God are experiencing defeat,

  101. and they are experiencing distress.

  102. Now, in the ancient Near East,

  103. the predominant empire at this time

  104. was the Assyrian Empire.

  105. If you remember in Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  106. the year that King Uzziah died,

  107. this was a good time for Judah.

  108. It's often called a golden age of Judah.

  109. But even that is a far cry from the real golden age

  110. which existed under Solomon.

  111. Solomon's reign,

  112. the empire that Solomon built,

  113. was the largest

  114. that the combined nation of Israel and Judah had together,

  115. the United Kingdom had.

  116. Ever since Solomon's time,

  117. it was a time of decline.

  118. And by the time of Isaiah chapter 9,

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  119. the decline is obvious.

  120. The enemies are getting stronger,

  121. and the people of God are getting weaker.

  122. Now, it's interesting that Isaiah

  123. doesn't even mention the Assyrians by name.

  124. Doesn't mention them as a nation.

  125. Doesn't mention their emperor.

  126. This happened to be Tiglath-Pileser III.

  127. Now, like yourself,

  128. we're all interested to some extent

  129. in the history of the ancient Near East.

  130. But there are weeks that go by

  131. when I don't even think of the Assyrian Empire.

  132. There might be months that go by

  133. where you don't give that empire a second thought.

  134. You see, that empire is a footnote now in history.

  135. It was a big deal at this time,

  136. but it's no longer a big deal.

  137. You see, empires rise and empires fall.

  138. The Assyrians had all power and all authority

  139. so much that their emperor would sign decrees.

  140. There was a later king called Ashurbanipal.

  141. He would sign his decrees.

  142. I am Ashurbanipal,

  143. the king of the world,

  144. the king of Assyria.

  145. Because it was true,

  146. if you were king of Assyria,

  147. you were effectively king of the known world.

  148. And now we don't think much of the Assyrian Empire.

  149. We don't remember Ashurbanipal or Tiglath-Pileser III,

  150. but we remember Jesus.

  151. Because Jesus, the one promised here,

  152. is the king.

  153. And his empire is not an empire of time or of place,

  154. but his empire expands across ages,

  155. across generations,

  156. so that this promise given 2,700 years ago

  157. has now found its fulfillment

  158. in time, in place,

  159. but also in experience.

  160. You see, this isn't just a study in ancient history.

  161. This is a present reality for the people of God.

  162. Because we read these promises,

  163. and we read these guarantees

  164. that God gives us about himself and about us.

  165. So it's a time of defeat.

  166. The Assyrians are on the rise,

  167. and Israel is on the decline.

  168. It's a time of darkness,

  169. the people walking in darkness.

  170. And it's not only dark,

  171. but it's deep darkness,

  172. in the second half of verse 2,

  173. on those living in the land of the shadow of death.

  174. Darkness is so deep

  175. that it's like the words that we sang in Psalm 23.

  176. Yea, though I walk through the valley

  177. of the shadow of death.

  178. So darkness is deep,

  179. and death is near.

  180. So that's the motif.

  181. Death.

  182. Defeat,

  183. darkness,

  184. and death.

  185. But the remarkable thing is that

  186. when light shines,

  187. darkness disappears.

  188. And we're told that a light is shining,

  189. and it's a bright light.

  190. And you see,

  191. the first point I want to make here

  192. is that at just the right time,

  193. at just the right place,

  194. in just the right circumstance,

  195. God shows up.

  196. Unexpected,

  197. in many regards.

  198. Surprising,

  199. by many accounts.

  200. But yet,

  201. God shows up

  202. at just the right time,

  203. in just the right place,

  204. at just the right setting.

  205. When you would least expect it,

  206. there he is.

  207. And you see,

  208. this scene of darkness,

  209. this scene of defeat,

  210. this scene of death,

  211. is transformed

  212. by light,

  213. is transformed

  214. by the arrival

  215. of one

  216. who will soon be described,

  217. a son,

  218. a child.

  219. So this darkness

  220. now is dispelled.

  221. This defeat

  222. is somehow being unraveled.

  223. Why?

  224. Because light has come.

  225. As you read,

  226. the opening verses

  227. of John's Gospel

  228. were told,

  229. in him was life,

  230. and that life

  231. was the light of men.

  232. Jesus enters this world

  233. of darkness,

  234. and he brings light.

  235. Jesus enters this world

  236. that is characterized

  237. by death and defeat,

  238. and he brings victory,

  239. and he brings life,

  240. and he brings joy,

  241. and he brings peace.

  242. So this scene

  243. is now transformed

  244. at just the right time.

  245. Now,

  246. I mentioned

  247. the Emancipation Proclamation,

  248. and there was

  249. a hundred-day gap.

  250. The president

  251. makes a promise,

  252. and he says,

  253. in a hundred days,

  254. this will be the case.

  255. It's not a hundred days.

  256. It's over 700 years

  257. between the promise

  258. and the fulfillment.

  259. And you think

  260. that's quite a long time.

  261. That's quite a long wait.

  262. Well,

  263. God's timing

  264. is perfect timing

  265. because he is

  266. infinitely wise,

  267. he is infinitely great,

  268. he is infinitely good,

  269. so this promise

  270. was intended

  271. to keep

  272. the people

  273. of God

  274. going.

  275. And sometimes

  276. we need

  277. that promise

  278. to keep

  279. going.

  280. Our circumstances,

  281. if we look

  282. at our circumstances,

  283. we are attempted

  284. to distress

  285. and despair.

  286. But when we turn

  287. to God's word,

  288. there we have

  289. an ample supply

  290. of hope,

  291. an ample supply

  292. of comfort,

  293. an ample supply

  294. of encouragement.

  295. So this opening

  296. motif,

  297. death,

  298. defeat,

  299. and darkness,

  300. now light

  301. is shining.

  302. Verses 3 and 5,

  303. again,

  304. we see

  305. this transformation

  306. taking place.

  307. Verse 3,

  308. So now we have

  309. a new scene.

  310. Instead of defeat,

  311. darkness,

  312. and death,

  313. we have

  314. increase,

  315. multiplication,

  316. joy,

  317. and celebration.

  318. How has this

  319. happened?

  320. How is this

  321. possible?

  322. You see,

  323. this is a time

  324. when the people

  325. of God

  326. are experiencing

  327. not increase,

  328. but decrease.

  329. They're not

  330. experiencing addition,

  331. they're experiencing

  332. subtraction.

  333. The land

  334. is reducing.

  335. Why?

  336. Because the northern

  337. neighbor,

  338. Assyria,

  339. is advancing south.

  340. And it's not

  341. going to be too long

  342. before the whole

  343. northern kingdom

  344. disappears,

  345. absorbed into

  346. this vast empire.

  347. But God says

  348. that's not the

  349. case.

  350. You see,

  351. God is at work

  352. in multiplication.

  353. Now you might

  354. remember,

  355. maybe some of you

  356. younger people here

  357. are taking maths

  358. at school.

  359. You might remember

  360. that there's what's

  361. called a progression,

  362. an arithmetic

  363. progression.

  364. When you go 2

  365. and 4

  366. and 6

  367. and 8,

  368. you add

  369. 2 plus 2

  370. plus 2

  371. plus 2.

  372. And you see

  373. that's a steady

  374. progression.

  375. But if you have

  376. what's described

  377. as a geometric

  378. progression,

  379. you go from

  380. 2 to 4

  381. to 8

  382. to 16

  383. to 32.

  384. It's a multiplication.

  385. Something that's

  386. small becomes

  387. very big

  388. very quickly.

  389. And this message

  390. that Isaiah

  391. is delivering

  392. to the people

  393. seems so unusual

  394. because the writing

  395. is on the wall.

  396. We have a northern

  397. neighbor that's

  398. far more powerful

  399. than us.

  400. We are not getting

  401. bigger,

  402. we are getting

  403. smaller.

  404. There's not light,

  405. there's darkness,

  406. there's not hope,

  407. there's despair,

  408. but God is saying

  409. a time is coming

  410. and a time is coming

  411. where the nation

  412. will expand

  413. and expand rapidly.

  414. You see,

  415. God has a way

  416. of multiplying.

  417. Let me give you

  418. an example.

  419. For over

  420. a hundred years,

  421. there was an

  422. intensive effort

  423. to bring the

  424. gospel to the

  425. nation and to

  426. the people of

  427. China.

  428. Hudson Taylor,

  429. China Inland

  430. Mission for one,

  431. but many

  432. Western organizations

  433. and Western

  434. missionary

  435. organizations

  436. sent people

  437. to China.

  438. By 1949,

  439. it was estimated

  440. that there was

  441. one million

  442. Chinese Christians.

  443. And in that

  444. year,

  445. Chairman Mao

  446. expelled every

  447. Western missionary,

  448. expelled every

  449. Western mission

  450. organization,

  451. and the thinking

  452. was quite

  453. understandable.

  454. This is a

  455. Western faith.

  456. If we get

  457. rid of the

  458. Westerners,

  459. if we get

  460. rid of the

  461. Western money,

  462. this faith

  463. will soon

  464. disappear.

  465. Something

  466. remarkable

  467. happened.

  468. In those

  469. next 60 or

  470. 70 years,

  471. the church

  472. of one

  473. million probably

  474. by estimation

  475. became a

  476. church of

  477. a hundred

  478. million.

  479. One Chinese

  480. Christian person

  481. in 1949,

  482. there's now

  483. a hundred.

  484. That's what

  485. multiplication

  486. looks like.

  487. When God

  488. takes something

  489. that looks

  490. small and

  491. he says,

  492. I'm going

  493. to make

  494. it big.

  495. I'm going

  496. to make

  497. it big in

  498. the circumstances

  499. that you

  500. would think

  501. is impossible.

  502. The resources,

  503. the personnel,

  504. everything that

  505. you would expect

  506. is necessary.

  507. God says he

  508. can work in

  509. ways that we

  510. can never

  511. understand or

  512. predict.

  513. So I want

  514. us to begin

  515. this year with

  516. optimism.

  517. I want us to

  518. see what God

  519. is able to do

  520. and I want

  521. us to see

  522. what God

  523. has promised

  524. to do

  525. and how

  526. God can

  527. take a

  528. situation

  529. that seems

  530. hopeless

  531. and bring

  532. multiplication

  533. and bring

  534. increase

  535. and bring

  536. joy.

  537. Because the

  538. language of

  539. these verses

  540. is the

  541. language of

  542. Egypt.

  543. It's the

  544. language of

  545. oppression.

  546. It's the

  547. language of

  548. slavery.

  549. For as in

  550. the day of

  551. Midian's

  552. defeat,

  553. you have

  554. shattered the

  555. yoke that

  556. burdens them,

  557. the bar

  558. across their

  559. shoulders,

  560. the rod

  561. of their

  562. oppressor.

  563. God has

  564. a way of

  565. removing

  566. and transforming.

  567. He removes

  568. the oppressor.

  569. He transforms

  570. the circumstances

  571. of his people.

  572. So instead of

  573. being a captive

  574. people,

  575. they're a free

  576. people.

  577. Instead of

  578. being an

  579. oppressed

  580. people,

  581. they are now

  582. a joyful

  583. people.

  584. And even

  585. that mention

  586. of Midian,

  587. remember

  588. the account

  589. and judges

  590. of Gideon?

  591. The first

  592. time we

  593. encounter

  594. Gideon,

  595. what is he

  596. doing?

  597. He's

  598. threshing

  599. wheat in

  600. a wine

  601. press.

  602. Why is he

  603. threshing

  604. wheat in

  605. a wine

  606. press?

  607. Because the

  608. Midianites

  609. are plundering

  610. the harvest.

  611. They're taking

  612. everything

  613. away.

  614. So if you

  615. want to

  616. preserve what

  617. you have,

  618. you need to

  619. hide it.

  620. And Isaiah

  621. is saying,

  622. you remember

  623. what happened

  624. in Midian,

  625. when Midian

  626. was the

  627. enemy,

  628. you remember

  629. what happened

  630. in Egypt.

  631. God

  632. intervened.

  633. God intervened

  634. at just the

  635. right time,

  636. in just the

  637. right situation,

  638. and he

  639. transformed

  640. the

  641. circumstances

  642. of his

  643. people.

  644. And this

  645. is why it's

  646. so important

  647. to study the

  648. history of

  649. the past.

  650. Because we

  651. see what

  652. God has

  653. done,

  654. and we

  655. see what

  656. God can

  657. do,

  658. and we

  659. are then

  660. given

  661. comfort and

  662. encouragement

  663. for today

  664. and for

  665. tomorrow.

  666. And as

  667. you read

  668. through this

  669. passage,

  670. you might

  671. notice that

  672. the verbs

  673. that are

  674. used,

  675. because Isaiah

  676. is talking

  677. about the

  678. future,

  679. but strangely

  680. he uses

  681. past tense

  682. verbs to

  683. talk about

  684. the future.

  685. We don't

  686. do that

  687. normally.

  688. If I tell

  689. you I'm

  690. going home

  691. to have

  692. lunch and

  693. I will

  694. have,

  695. you know,

  696. I will use

  697. words like

  698. will.

  699. You know,

  700. when I

  701. describe the

  702. future,

  703. I don't

  704. talk about

  705. past tense

  706. events,

  707. but Isaiah

  708. is so

  709. confident,

  710. or in

  711. this word,

  712. in this

  713. message,

  714. that he's

  715. presenting

  716. something as

  717. if it has

  718. already been

  719. achieved.

  720. That is how

  721. reliable God

  722. is.

  723. You can

  724. take his

  725. word to

  726. the bank,

  727. and you'll

  728. never be

  729. disappointed.

  730. You'll

  731. never be

  732. discouraged.

  733. So instead

  734. of slavery,

  735. instead of

  736. hardship,

  737. instead of

  738. suffering,

  739. we have

  740. here a

  741. picture of

  742. joy,

  743. a picture

  744. of abundance,

  745. a picture

  746. of freedom,

  747. a picture

  748. of security,

  749. a picture

  750. of safety.

  751. You see,

  752. God has

  753. a way of

  754. changing our

  755. circumstances

  756. and transforming

  757. our status.

  758. The 1st of

  759. January,

  760. 1863,

  761. the President

  762. of the United

  763. States declared

  764. those that

  765. were held in

  766. slavery to be

  767. free.

  768. And from

  769. that point

  770. forward,

  771. they were

  772. free.

  773. Because he

  774. said it,

  775. he meant

  776. it,

  777. and he

  778. accompanied

  779. his

  780. proclamation

  781. with power.

  782. God is

  783. describing his

  784. people now,

  785. no longer

  786. as slaves,

  787. no longer

  788. as in

  789. danger,

  790. no longer

  791. in distress,

  792. but a

  793. people who

  794. are to be

  795. characterized

  796. by joy,

  797. by

  798. celebration,

  799. and by

  800. increase and

  801. multiplication.

  802. salvation.

  803. And as we

  804. come then

  805. to the

  806. final portion

  807. of this

  808. passage,

  809. how is it

  810. possible that

  811. this transformation

  812. can take

  813. place?

  814. How can a

  815. scene of

  816. defeat,

  817. of

  818. captivity,

  819. of suffering,

  820. of darkness

  821. and distress,

  822. how can that

  823. situation be

  824. transformed?

  825. Verse 6,

  826. for to us

  827. a child

  828. is born,

  829. to us

  830. a son

  831. is given.

  832. There is

  833. one who

  834. comes

  835. and who

  836. achieves

  837. and fulfills

  838. and provides

  839. and enables

  840. the impossible

  841. to be

  842. possible.

  843. Isn't that

  844. the refrain

  845. that we often

  846. see throughout

  847. the Bible?

  848. With man,

  849. this is

  850. impossible.

  851. With us,

  852. this is

  853. impossible.

  854. Your

  855. circumstances

  856. today might

  857. seem to be

  858. impossible.

  859. The despair,

  860. the distress,

  861. the discouragement.

  862. The Bible

  863. is not

  864. a self-help

  865. book.

  866. Whatever it

  867. is,

  868. it's not

  869. that.

  870. Because the

  871. help that

  872. we need

  873. does not

  874. come from

  875. ourselves.

  876. If we

  877. could help

  878. ourselves,

  879. surely we

  880. would have

  881. helped

  882. ourselves

  883. by now.

  884. The help

  885. that is

  886. described here

  887. is not

  888. coming from

  889. the people,

  890. but is

  891. coming from

  892. God for

  893. his people.

  894. A child,

  895. a son.

  896. And we're

  897. told that the

  898. government will

  899. be on

  900. his shoulders.

  901. Think of

  902. that image.

  903. The government

  904. of the world

  905. rests upon

  906. the shoulders

  907. of this

  908. child,

  909. this son,

  910. which means

  911. that he

  912. can carry

  913. a heavy

  914. load.

  915. You and

  916. I cannot

  917. carry heavy

  918. loads.

  919. We are

  920. often burdened

  921. or weighed

  922. down or

  923. oppressed.

  924. And that's

  925. why when you

  926. think of the

  927. ministry of

  928. Jesus,

  929. we look

  930. at the

  931. beginning of

  932. Jesus'

  933. ministry in

  934. Matthew,

  935. if you

  936. read through

  937. just a few

  938. more chapters,

  939. you'll come

  940. to the end

  941. of Matthew

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  942. chapter 11,

  943. where Jesus

  944. says,

  945. come to

  946. me,

  947. all who

  948. are weary

  949. and burdened,

  950. and I

  951. will give

  952. you rest.

  953. Now,

  954. how is he

  955. able to

  956. say that?

  957. He's able

  958. to say that

  959. because he

  960. can carry

  961. the whole

  962. world on

  963. his shoulders.

  964. He is

  965. that strong.

  966. He is

  967. that powerful.

  968. So that

  969. which crushes

  970. us has

  971. no impact

  972. on him

  973. because he

  974. is that

  975. strong,

  976. that great,

  977. and that

  978. mighty.

  979. So not

  980. only does

  981. he carry

  982. the government,

  983. we're told

  984. that he

  985. is called

  986. Wonderful

  987. Counselor,

  988. Mighty God,

  989. Everlasting

  990. Father,

  991. Prince of

  992. Peace.

  993. Wonderful

  994. Counselor.

  995. In this

  996. city,

  997. there's a

  998. counseling service

  999. called New

  1000. Growth

  1001. Counseling.

  1002. Louise

  1003. McMillan and

  1004. colleagues provide

  1005. Christian counseling

  1006. for people

  1007. who have

  1008. problems.

  1009. Many

  1010. different kinds

  1011. of problems,

  1012. many different

  1013. kinds of

  1014. situations,

  1015. and there's

  1016. a huge

  1017. value in

  1018. Christian

  1019. counseling

  1020. of talking

  1021. with someone

  1022. who can

  1023. help you

  1024. see or

  1025. maybe work

  1026. through

  1027. problems,

  1028. but any

  1029. counselor will

  1030. tell you

  1031. that they

  1032. encounter

  1033. situations that

  1034. are beyond

  1035. them.

  1036. They've

  1037. never seen

  1038. this kind

  1039. of problem,

  1040. they don't

  1041. know what

  1042. to say,

  1043. but the

  1044. counselor that

  1045. we have

  1046. in the

  1047. sun,

  1048. in the

  1049. child,

  1050. never

  1051. encounters a

  1052. problem that

  1053. is too

  1054. great,

  1055. never

  1056. encounters a

  1057. difficulty that

  1058. is too

  1059. complex.

  1060. This

  1061. counselor never

  1062. needs advice,

  1063. this counselor

  1064. never needs

  1065. wisdom because

  1066. he has all

  1067. wisdom and

  1068. all knowledge.

  1069. We're describing

  1070. him here also

  1071. as mighty

  1072. God or as

  1073. a warrior

  1074. God.

  1075. Now the

  1076. Assyrians were

  1077. a warrior

  1078. empire,

  1079. but our

  1080. God fights

  1081. for us,

  1082. and he

  1083. can defeat

  1084. any foe,

  1085. he can

  1086. thwart

  1087. any enemy.

  1088. So when

  1089. we have

  1090. him on

  1091. our side,

  1092. we not

  1093. only have

  1094. all wisdom,

  1095. we have

  1096. all strength.

  1097. And not

  1098. only do we

  1099. have a

  1100. God who

  1101. is mighty

  1102. and a

  1103. God who

  1104. is wise,

  1105. but we

  1106. have a

  1107. God who

  1108. is relational

  1109. by his

  1110. very nature.

  1111. He knows

  1112. us,

  1113. he loves

  1114. us,

  1115. he makes

  1116. us part

  1117. of his

  1118. family.

  1119. You see,

  1120. there's a

  1121. change of

  1122. status.

  1123. The captive

  1124. people have

  1125. become free.

  1126. The people

  1127. in distress

  1128. have become

  1129. joyful.

  1130. But those

  1131. who are

  1132. separated from

  1133. God now

  1134. become part

  1135. of God's

  1136. family.

  1137. It's

  1138. interesting that

  1139. here one of

  1140. the titles

  1141. given to

  1142. the Son

  1143. is Everlasting

  1144. Father.

  1145. Now this

  1146. doesn't mean

  1147. that,

  1148. this doesn't

  1149. conflict with

  1150. our understanding

  1151. of Father,

  1152. Son,

  1153. and Holy

  1154. Spirit.

  1155. But the

  1156. title here

  1157. is one

  1158. who has

  1159. no beginning,

  1160. one who

  1161. has no end,

  1162. and one

  1163. who looks

  1164. upon us

  1165. as a

  1166. member of

  1167. his family

  1168. with care,

  1169. with concern,

  1170. and with

  1171. compassion.

  1172. So the

  1173. mighty God,

  1174. the warrior

  1175. God,

  1176. is Everlasting

  1177. Father.

  1178. And he's

  1179. Prince of

  1180. Peace.

  1181. In an

  1182. age of

  1183. warfare,

  1184. God is

  1185. a God

  1186. who brings

  1187. peace.

  1188. In an

  1189. age of

  1190. military

  1191. defeat,

  1192. a God

  1193. who brings

  1194. victory,

  1195. but a

  1196. God who

  1197. declares

  1198. peace.

  1199. Another

  1200. anniversary that

  1201. passed in

  1202. December,

  1203. December 7,

  1204. 1941,

  1205. was the

  1206. attack on

  1207. Pearl Harbor

  1208. by the

  1209. Japanese

  1210. Empire,

  1211. and war

  1212. commenced.

  1213. Human beings

  1214. can declare

  1215. war,

  1216. but only

  1217. God can

  1218. declare

  1219. peace,

  1220. because his

  1221. declaration is

  1222. accompanied with

  1223. the power to

  1224. achieve peace.

  1225. And we're

  1226. told that this

  1227. peace and

  1228. his government

  1229. will extend

  1230. and extend

  1231. and extend.

  1232. The 20th

  1233. century was

  1234. the most

  1235. successful

  1236. century for

  1237. the missionary

  1238. enterprise of

  1239. the Christian

  1240. church.

  1241. We might not

  1242. realize that,

  1243. but it is.

  1244. That 100-year

  1245. period was the

  1246. most successful

  1247. period of

  1248. Christian evangelization

  1249. since the

  1250. book of Acts.

  1251. The 21st

  1252. century has

  1253. the ability

  1254. of being

  1255. even greater

  1256. in terms of

  1257. more people

  1258. being reached

  1259. with the

  1260. gospel.

  1261. Just to

  1262. give you a

  1263. statistic that

  1264. is remarkable,

  1265. in 1900,

  1266. the high

  1267. water mark

  1268. of the

  1269. Western

  1270. missionary

  1271. endeavor,

  1272. there were

  1273. 10 million

  1274. Christians on

  1275. the continent

  1276. of Africa,

  1277. 10% of the

  1278. population.

  1279. By the end

  1280. of the 20th

  1281. century,

  1282. there were

  1283. 360 million

  1284. Africans on

  1285. the continent

  1286. of Africa,

  1287. half of

  1288. which were

  1289. Christians.

  1290. This is the

  1291. largest shift

  1292. in religious

  1293. affiliation that

  1294. has ever been

  1295. identified anywhere

  1296. at any time.

  1297. This is what

  1298. God does when

  1299. he extends his

  1300. kingdom.

  1301. I mentioned

  1302. the word

  1303. enthusiasm,

  1304. and with this

  1305. I want to

  1306. close,

  1307. because at the

  1308. end of this

  1309. great promise,

  1310. we're told that

  1311. the zeal of

  1312. the Lord

  1313. Almighty will

  1314. accomplish this,

  1315. that God has

  1316. an intense

  1317. commitment to

  1318. fulfill his

  1319. own promise.

  1320. and he

  1321. fulfills that

  1322. promise with

  1323. great zeal,

  1324. with great

  1325. enthusiasm,

  1326. with great

  1327. intensity.

  1328. And I would

  1329. like to suggest

  1330. that as this

  1331. year commences,

  1332. that we might

  1333. hope to share

  1334. something of

  1335. this enthusiasm.

  1336. So I want you

  1337. to be optimistic,

  1338. not pessimistic.

  1339. I want you to

  1340. have hope and

  1341. not despair.

  1342. I want you to

  1343. reflect on light

  1344. and not darkness,

1345. but I want you to

  1346. consider what it

  1347. means to be

  1348. enthusiastic.

  1349. We all have

  1350. different temperaments.

  1351. Some of us are

  1352. half empty people,

  1353. some of us are

  1354. glass half full

  1355. people,

1356. but I want us to

  1357. be enthusiastic

  1358. if we are

  1359. Christians.

  1360. Ralph Waldo

  1361. Emerson, a great

  1362. essayist in America,

  1363. put it this way.

  1364. He said,

  1365. enthusiasm is one

  1366. of the most

  1367. powerful engines

  1368. of success.

  1369. When you do a

  1370. thing, do it

  1371. with all your

  1372. might.

  1373. Put your whole

  1374. soul into it,

  1375. stamp it with your

  1376. own personality,

  1377. be active,

  1378. be energetic,

  1379. be enthusiastic

  1380. and faithful,

  1381. and you will

  1382. accomplish your

  1383. object.

  1384. Nothing great

  1385. was ever achieved

  1386. without enthusiasm.

  1387. There's a zealous

  1388. enthusiasm of God

  1389. that not only does

  1390. he promise,

  1391. but he achieves.

  1392. Not only does he

  1393. make commitments,

  1394. but he fulfills

  1395. those commitments.

  1396. And I think there

  1397. should be something

  1398. of that enthusiasm

  1399. in the people

  1400. of God.

  1401. Let me give you

  1402. just one example.

  1403. In the early part

  1404. of the 18th

  1405. century,

  1406. the 1700s,

  1407. the cause of

  1408. Jesus was at

  1409. a very low

  1410. ebb in the

  1411. United Kingdom,

  1412. in the American

  1413. colonies.

  1414. It was exactly

  1415. the opposite.

  1416. It was exactly

  1417. the time in which

  1418. you didn't expect

  1419. much to happen

  1420. because not much

  1421. was happening.

  1422. But God raised

  1423. up a generation

  1424. of preachers,

  1425. of pastors,

  1426. of evangelists

  1427. that brought

  1428. the gospel

  1429. to the United

  1430. Kingdom,

  1431. to England,

  1432. to Scotland,

  1433. to Wales,

  1434. to Ireland,

  1435. to the United

  1436. States,

  1437. at just the

  1438. right moment

  1439. when things

  1440. seemed to be

  1441. going from bad

  1442. to worse.

  1443. And these

  1444. preachers were

  1445. described as

  1446. enthusiasts.

  1447. But that wasn't

  1448. a compliment.

  1449. They were

  1450. described as

  1451. enthusiasts in

  1452. religion.

  1453. And religion

  1454. wasn't meant

  1455. to be enthusiastic.

  1456. Religion was

  1457. something that you

  1458. had in your

  1459. private life,

  1460. and you

  1461. kept that

  1462. privately.

  1463. But people

  1464. like John

  1465. Wesley or

  1466. George

  1467. Whitefield

  1468. became

  1469. enthusiasts

  1470. for the

  1471. gospel.

  1472. Whitefield

  1473. once said,

  1474. other men

  1475. may preach

  1476. the gospel

  1477. better than

  1478. I,

  1479. but no man

  1480. can preach

  1481. a better

  1482. gospel.

  1483. John

  1484. Wesley,

  1485. his contemporary,

  1486. said this,

  1487. he said,

  1488. catch on fire

  1489. with enthusiasm

  1490. and people

  1491. will come

  1492. for miles

  1493. to see you

  1494. burn.

  1495. George

  1496. Whitefield

  1497. traveled many

  1498. times to the

  1499. United States,

  1500. to the U.S.

  1501. colonies,

  1502. and on his

  1503. last journey

  1504. there,

  1505. it was clear

  1506. that his

  1507. life was

  1508. coming to

  1509. an end.

  1510. He was

  1511. only in

  1512. his 50s,

  1513. but still

  1514. it was obvious

  1515. that he was

  1516. growing weaker.

  1517. And on one

  1518. evening,

  1519. it was the

  1520. 27th of

  1521. September

  1522. 1770,

  1523. a friend

  1524. said,

  1525. sir,

  1526. you are

  1527. more fit

  1528. to go to

  1529. bed than

  1530. to preach.

  1531. And George

  1532. Whitefield

  1533. replied,

  1534. true,

  1535. sir.

  1536. But then

  1537. he prayed,

  1538. Lord Jesus,

  1539. I am weary

  1540. in thy work,

  1541. but not of

  1542. thy work.

  1543. I have

  1544. not yet

  1545. finished

  1546. my course.

  1547. Let me

  1548. go and

  1549. speak for

  1550. thee once

  1551. more in

  1552. the fields.

  1553. Seal thy

  1554. truth and

  1555. let me

  1556. come home

  1557. and die.

  1558. He stood

  1559. on a barrel

  1560. and preached

  1561. for two

  1562. hours that

  1563. evening.

  1564. When he

  1565. went to

  1566. bed,

  1567. he said,

  1568. I would

  1569. rather wear

  1570. out than

  1571. rust out.

  1572. This was

  1573. in the

  1574. Massachusetts

  1575. colony.

  1576. That next

  1577. morning,

  1578. he died

  1579. and was

  1580. buried there

  1581. in the

  1582. United States.

  1583. That's what

  1584. enthusiasm

  1585. looks like,

  1586. going forth

  1587. in the

  1588. name of

  1589. Jesus

  1590. with the

  1591. sure

  1592. promise

  1593. of the

  1594. gospel,

  1595. knowing

  1596. that God's

  1597. word will

  1598. always be

  1599. fulfilled,

  1600. God's

  1601. promises are

  1602. always yes

  1603. and amen,

  1604. and God

  1605. has a way

  1606. of using

  1607. ordinary

  1608. people to

  1609. accomplish

  1610. extraordinary

  1611. things so

  1612. that all the

  1613. credit,

  1614. all the

  1615. praise,

  1616. all the

  1617. honor is

  1618. his.

  1619. So we

  1620. have hope

  1621. today in

  1622. Jesus,

  1623. the son,

  1624. the child.

  1625. we have

  1626. hope in

  1627. his gospel,

  1628. even that

  1629. portion of

  1630. chapter 4 in

  1631. Matthew that

  1632. we read.

  1633. All different

  1634. kinds of

  1635. people,

  1636. with all

  1637. different kinds

  1638. of problems,

  1639. from all

  1640. different kinds

  1641. of places,

  1642. came to

  1643. him and

  1644. each one

  1645. was healed.

  1646. That's his

  1647. power,

  1648. that's his

  1649. authority.

  1650. So this

  1651. promise goes

  1652. forth in

  1653. the name

  1654. of God,

  1655. who cannot

  1656. lie,

  1657. goes forth

  1658. with his

  1659. power,

  1660. and has

  1661. been and

  1662. is being

  1663. achieved.

  1664. So if

  1665. you are a

  1666. follower of

  1667. Jesus,

  1668. be hopeful,

  1669. be encouraged,

  1670. be enthusiastic,

  1671. and if you're

  1672. not yet trusting

  1673. in this

  1674. Jesus,

  1675. place all of

  1676. your cares

  1677. on him,

  1678. come to

  1679. him and

  1680. come to

  1681. know this

  1682. joy,

  1683. this light,

  1684. this life,

  1685. this hope,

  1686. and come to

  1687. experience for

  1688. yourself what

  1689. it means to

  1690. be a child

  1691. of this

  1692. God,

  1693. to be a

  1694. member of

  1695. this family,

  1696. to be a

  1697. follower of

  1698. this Savior.

  1699. And may God

  1700. bless you this

  1701. day,

  1702. and this

  1703. year,

  1704. and may

  1705. all the

  1706. glory be

  1707. his.

  1708. Let's

  1709. pray.

  1710. Father, we

  1711. ask that you

  1712. would encourage

  1713. us, strengthen

  1714. us, and equip

  1715. us.

  1716. We thank you

  1717. for these

  1718. precious promises

  1719. that are

  1720. yea and

  1721. amen in

  1722. Christ Jesus.

  1723. We thank you

  1724. that what you

  1725. say you mean,

  1726. what you

  1727. promise you

  1728. fulfill,

  1729. and you

  1730. delight in

  1731. using ordinary

  1732. people like

  1733. us to

  1734. demonstrate the

  1735. extraordinary

  1736. power,

  1737. the

  1738. extraordinary

  1739. grace,

  1740. the

  1741. extraordinary

  1742. wisdom,

  1743. the

  1744. extraordinary

  1745. love that

  1746. is found in

  1747. Jesus Christ.

  1748. We thank you

  1749. that he can

  1750. carry the

  1751. whole world

  1752. on his

  1753. shoulders,

  1754. and that his

  1755. government is

  1756. increasing day

  1757. by day,

  1758. that his

  1759. kingdom is

  1760. growing,

  1761. that men

  1762. and women

  1763. and boys

  1764. and girls

  1765. throughout this

  1766. world are

  1767. coming to

  1768. know him,

  1769. and in

  1770. knowing him

  1771. are coming

  1772. to know

  1773. life abundant

  1774. and life

  1775. eternal.

  1776. So give us

  1777. encouragement

  1778. today,

  1779. Lord.

  1780. Give us

  1781. hope in

  1782. great measure

  1783. and help us

  1784. to be

  1785. enthusiastic

  1786. in the

  1787. gospel,

  1788. in the

  1789. service of

  1790. our Lord,

  1791. in the

  1792. encouragement

  1793. of one

  1794. another,

  1795. and in

  1796. the

  1797. proclamation

  1798. of these

  1799. great and

  1800. precious

  1801. promises,

  1802. the son,

  1803. the child,

  1804. the wonderful

  1805. counselor,

  1806. the mighty

  1807. God,

  1808. the everlasting

  1809. father,

  1810. the prince

  1811. of peace.

  1812. We pray in

  1813. the name of

  1814. Jesus.

  1815. Amen.

  1816. Now our

  1817. final item

  1818. of praise

  1819. is that

  1820. magnificent

  1821. hymn written

  1822. by Charles

  1823. Wesley,

  1824. Hark the

  1825. Herald

  1826. Angels Sing.

  1827. Let's stand

  1828. together.
