  1. It is a great pleasure to be here with you all this evening to bring you the word.

  2. Please turn with me, if you would, in the word of God to Psalm 126.

  3. Our text this evening is particularly verse 3, but we will look at and read the whole psalm.

  4. Psalm 126, let us hear God's own word.

  5. A song of ascents.

  6. When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream.

  7. Then our mouth was filled with laughter and our tongue with shouts of joy.

  8. Then they said among the nations, the Lord has done great things for them.

  9. The Lord has done great things for us.

  10. We are glad.

  11. Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negev.

  12. Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy.

  13. He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

  14. So far, the reading of God's word.

  15. Psalm 126 is one of 15 psalms that all bear the title Songs of Ascents.

  16. Or we might translate that as Songs of Going Up.

  17. Or maybe even Songs of Climbing Stairs.

  18. And scholars are somewhat divided as to exactly what that title means.

  19. But it seems related to the annual pilgrimages that God had said to ancient Israel.

  20. The people were to make three times a year to Jerusalem.

  21. Three times in the year.

  22. Faithful Israelites, at least men with their older sons representing their families, though women and other children could come too.

  23. They were to go to Jerusalem to worship God.

  24. And that must have been quite a burden on a lot of people.

  25. Three times in the year to leave behind family and work.

  26. Many would have been farmers.

  27. They would have been concerned about the farm.

  28. Many would have lived far from Jerusalem, near border areas.

  29. They would have been concerned about enemies coming in to attack, perhaps, while they were gone.

  30. Many would have had to make difficult journeys.

  31. They couldn't just pile the family in the car and drive there in an hour.

  32. And so we may wonder, why did God impose such a difficult burden on his people?

  33. At Passover, the Feast of Weeks, the Feast of Tabernacles or Booths, they were to go up to Jerusalem to worship.

  34. But God tells his people why he has laid this requirement upon them.

  35. In Exodus 34, verse 24, where he says,

    Exodus 34:24

  36. For I will cast out nations before you and enlarge your borders.

  37. No one shall covet your land when you go up to appear before the Lord your God three times in the year.

  38. And what God is saying here is,

  39. When you go up three times a year, you will remember that I gave you the land.

  40. And as I gave it to you, so will I preserve it for you.

  41. This is an exercise in which you can remember the blessings of the Lord,

  42. in which you can call to mind again that it is not by the skill of your farming,

  43. that it is not by the strength you have to protect your border,

  44. that you have what you have and you are what you are.

  45. But it is because the Lord has given it to you.

  46. And one of the things that is striking about these 15 psalms,

  47. that may well have been sung when the pilgrims went up to Jerusalem,

  48. or that may well have been sung when the pilgrims arrived in Jerusalem,

  49. is how they celebrate different ways in which the Lord comes to his people to deliver them.

  50. We can summarize them if we wanted to in short lines.

  51. Psalm 120 is about how the Lord delivers.

  52. Psalm 121, how the Lord keeps or guards.

  53. We could go on through the songs of ascents,

  54. how the Lord helps, how the Lord surrounds,

  55. how the Lord builds, how the Lord blesses,

  56. how the Lord forgives, how the Lord remembers.

  57. And you see, these relatively brief songs are all intended to draw the mind of God's people back to the Lord

  58. and to the various ways in which he remembers and blesses and provides for his people.

  59. And this particular psalm, we might well say, could be summarized as the Lord restores.

  60. Verse 1, we read,

  61. When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion.

  62. God restores blessings to his people.

  63. That's part of the character of our God.

  64. And the first half of this psalm looks backward,

  65. reflecting on the ways in which God restored his people in times past.

  66. And the second half of this psalm looks forward

  67. to how the Lord is going to restore the fortunes of his people in the future.

  68. So it seemed to me a good psalm to think about at this time of year,

  69. the beginning of a new year,

  70. when we're prone to look back at the year past

  71. and to look forward to the year to come,

  72. that we might also reflect on what God has done

  73. and what God promises that he will do.

  74. And I'd like to suggest tonight that we can take a text from this psalm

  75. for the new year of 2022.

  76. A text that can direct us, inspire us, encourage us,

  77. at least for the rest of the evening.

  78. And it can be a verse, I think, to have in our mind

  79. to encourage us as we live for the Lord in this year.

  80. And that verse is Psalm 126, verse 3.

    Psalms 126:3

  81. The Lord has done great things for us.

  82. We are glad.

  83. The Lord has done great things for us.

  84. We are glad.

  85. This verse declares to us that we should know something.

  86. And it's an important thing for us to know

  87. because there are many in this world, sadly, who do not know it

  88. or are those who are prone to forget it.

  89. You and I are prone to forget the truth of this verse

  90. amid the trouble and the difficulty and the struggle of this life.

  91. But this verse calls upon us to know, to acknowledge,

  92. to embrace that unique relationship that exists with our covenant God.

  93. Know that the Lord, Yahweh, the covenant God of his people,

  94. He has done great things for us.

  95. This is a verse about God's grace, about his provision,

  96. about his mercy for his people.

  97. Know that the Lord has done great things for you

  98. if you are among his people.

  99. And that should be a great encouragement for all of us in the new year.

  100. That should help guide and direct us in our living.

  101. We are those for whom the Lord has done great things.

  102. And we need to know that.

  103. We need to remember that.

  104. We need to be reminded of that

  105. so that when we find ourselves in need,

  106. when we find ourselves discouraged,

  107. when we find ourselves depleted,

  108. tired, angry, anxious,

  109. feeling losses in this life,

  110. we can be assured that our God is a restoring God.

  111. That the grace of our God surrounds us as his people to restore us.

  112. So how does this psalm draw us to that truth

  113. that God is a restoring God?

  114. Well, the first half of this psalm really invites us to remember.

  115. To remember what God has done for us in the past.

  116. The Israelites, as they walked to Jerusalem,

  117. had many things to think back on, didn't they?

  118. That God had done for them.

  119. How God had delivered them from slavery in Egypt

  120. through his servant Moses.

  121. How God had established a kingdom and a holy city for them

  122. through his servant David.

  123. How God had brought them back out of exile

  124. and given them once more a land,

  125. even after their sin and disobedience.

  126. Perhaps the particular focus of this psalm.

  127. How God again and again and again restored his people.

  128. And we can look back at the history of the church, can't we?

  129. And think of times of restoration.

  130. Times amid chaos and controversy

  131. when God restored his church.

  132. In the ancient church.

  133. We might think especially of the time of the Reformation.

  134. God throughout the history of his people

  135. comes from time to time

  136. in remarkable power and blessing

  137. to restore our fortunes.

  138. Fortunes there not meaning riches,

  139. but restoring the well-being of his people.

  140. And it is good for us to think back

  141. on those times of blessing

  142. from the hand of the Lord.

  143. As he builds up his church,

  144. as he restores the life of his people.

  145. But it's not just the blessings

  146. that the Lord brings

  147. into the people of God as a whole,

  148. on a grand scale in view here.

  149. This psalm, I think,

  150. invites us to consider

  151. more personally,

  152. more individually,

  153. about those times of blessing

  154. and restoration and renewal

  155. that the Lord brings into our own lives.

  156. In fact, we might notice

  157. that the next psalm

  158. is a celebration of family.

  159. The psalm after that

  160. is a celebration of prosperity,

  161. even in this life.

  162. And I think that's not accidental.

  163. So this psalm encourages us,

  164. and certainly this time of year

  165. encourages us to look back

  166. and think,

  167. how many are the blessings

  168. that I've received

  169. from the hands of the Lord,

  170. even in my own personal life.

  171. Maybe I wasn't at the Exodus,

  172. or at the establishment of Jerusalem

  173. at the capital city,

  174. or even at the Reformation.

  175. None of us here are that old,

  176. I think.

  177. But I see, nevertheless,

  178. in my own family life,

  179. in the life of my friends,

  180. in the life of my work,

  181. the hand of the Lord's blessing,

  182. how he has been with me in the past,

  183. how he has restored

  184. and done so

  185. in so many wonderful ways.

  186. And of course, above all,

  187. when we think of the restoration

  188. of our God,

  189. of his mercies in the past,

  190. we must think of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  191. That's why we've read

  192. from Acts chapter 3,

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  193. the wonderful sermon of Peter,

  194. as he had healed the lame man.

  195. But Peter did not want anyone

  196. to think that this wonderful work of God

  197. came from him,

  198. or from anyone else.

  199. It was a wonderful work of God

  200. that should draw attention

  201. only to Jesus Christ,

  202. and the times of refreshing,

  203. as he wrote.

  204. The times of refreshment

  205. that come from the hand of our Savior.

  206. Times of refreshment.

  207. It's a phrase we find

  208. only there in Acts 3

  209. in the New Testament.

  210. Times of refreshment.

  211. Times of restoration.

  212. But that captures, I think,

  213. the spirit of the first half

  214. of Psalm 126.

  215. That the Lord comes to his people

  216. with times of restoration,

  217. with times of refreshment.

  218. And I hope for every one of us here,

  219. at the end of 2021,

  220. however difficult this year may have been,

  221. a year that has been filled

  222. with real difficulty for many of us,

  223. that we can also look back

  224. and think,

  225. the refreshment of the Lord,

  226. the restoration of the Lord,

  227. the grace of the Lord,

  228. the mercy of the Lord,

  229. has been with me.

  230. And this psalm

  231. is a very happy psalm.

  232. You might just go through some time

  233. and underline

  234. the number of times

  235. the word joy appears

  236. in this psalm.

  237. When the psalmist,

  238. or when the pilgrims, perhaps,

  239. as they're heading towards Jerusalem,

  240. think about what the Lord

  241. has done for them,

  242. they say,

  243. we were like men who dreamed.

  244. Have you ever had that experience?

  245. Something happened to you

  246. that's so good

  247. that you can hardly believe it.

  248. That's what the psalmist here is saying.

  249. When we contemplate

  250. those times of restoring

  251. from the hand of the Lord,

  252. sometimes we just have to step back

  253. and say,

  254. how can this be?

  255. Am I dreaming

  256. that the Lord would be so good,

  257. so kind,

  258. so merciful to me?

  259. How could I have ever deserved this?

  260. Am I dreaming?

  261. Our mouth,

  262. the text says,

  263. was filled with laughter,

  264. and our tongue

  265. with shouts of joy.

  266. Mouths filled with laughter.

  267. It's a beautiful picture,

  268. isn't it?

  269. Laughter, I think,

  270. may not always be

  271. our greatest strength,

  272. especially as Presbyterians

  273. sitting in church,

  274. but this psalm encourages us

  275. to think about

  276. that joy bubbling up in the heart,

  277. so profound that we can't hold it back.

  278. Songs of joy,

  279. such blessings

  280. that the psalmist says,

  281. even the nations,

  282. even the Gentiles

  283. have to stand back and say,

  284. the Lord has done

  285. great things for them.

  286. Great things.

  287. Great things for them.

  288. Do you know

  289. that in your own heart

  290. that the Lord

  291. has done great things

  292. for you?

  293. It is one thing

  294. to say with the nations,

  295. the Lord has done

  296. great things for them.

  297. The nations watched

  298. while Pharaoh

  299. and his armies

  300. were plunged into the sea.

  301. A great thing of God.

  302. And they shuddered.

  303. But it's another thing

  304. to say with the people of God,

  305. the Lord has done

  306. great things for us.

  307. Moses and the Israelites

  308. crossed through

  309. on dry ground.

  310. A great thing of God.

  311. And they smiled.

  312. And of course,

  313. in the coming of our Lord Jesus,

  314. the nations,

  315. the Gentiles,

  316. don't only stand back

  317. and observe

  318. great things of God

  319. or only wonder

  320. at the power of our Lord

  321. as he comes

  322. in great judgment

  323. against them.

  324. But the Lord is now

  325. doing great things

  326. for them too.

  327. Praise God for that

  328. or probably none of us

  329. would be here tonight.

  330. We're included

  331. in the restoration,

  332. in the times of refreshing,

  333. so that we too

  334. can say with Israel of old,

  335. the Lord has done

  336. great things for us.

  337. And we are filled with joy.

  338. Do you know that?

  339. Do you feel that?

  340. It's okay to feel things.

  341. Don't overdo it.

  342. But it is okay to feel things.

  343. And this is what should

  344. well up within us

  345. when we think of the Lord

  346. Jesus Christ

  347. and his saving work for us.

  348. When we think of God's

  349. faithfulness to his people

  350. through the centuries.

  351. When we think

  352. how he overcame

  353. again and again

  354. the sin and rebellion

  355. of his people,

  356. we should be filled

  357. with joy.

  358. We should be filled

  359. with thanksgiving

  360. that the Lord

  361. has done such things,

  362. that the Lord

  363. has done

  364. great things

  365. for us.

  366. It's interesting

  367. to note

  368. just a couple of

  369. psalms over.

  370. In Psalm 131,

  371. David,

  372. in another song

  373. of ascents,

  374. writes,

  375. O Lord,

  376. my heart is not

  377. lifted up,

  378. my eyes are not

  379. raised too high,

  380. I do not occupy

  381. myself with things

  382. too great

  383. and too marvelous

  384. for me.

  385. With things

  386. too great,

  387. with great things.

  388. It's the same phrase.

  389. David the king

  390. is saying,

  391. you know,

  392. great things

  393. aren't really

  394. for me.

  395. Why does he say that?

  396. Not to deny

  397. that he has

  398. responsibilities

  399. that are serious,

  400. but to confess

  401. before the Lord

  402. that even though

  403. he is king,

  404. great things

  405. ultimately,

  406. always,

  407. only belong

  408. to God.

  409. It is God

  410. who is always

  411. the one doing

  412. great things

  413. for his people.

  414. And that's why

  415. we rejoice.

  416. That's why

  417. we are filled

  418. with joy.

  419. That's the truth

  420. of our past

  421. as the people

  422. of God.

  423. But this psalm

  424. goes on to say

  425. that's the truth

  426. of our future

  427. as the people

  428. of God as well.

  429. Verse 4,

  430. restore our fortunes,

  431. O Lord.

  432. This implies

  433. that in the present

  434. things are

  435. somewhat problematic

  436. for the people

  437. of God.

  438. They look back

  439. to a great day

  440. of blessing.

  441. They look forward

  442. to a great day

  443. of blessing,

  444. but they're praying

  445. for that blessing

  446. because the present

  447. is difficult.

  448. Restore our fortunes,

  449. O Lord,

  450. like streams

  451. in the Negev,

  452. like streams

  453. in the wilderness,

  454. like water

  455. in the desert.

  456. What is the picture

  457. of water

  458. in the desert?

  459. It's unexpected,

  460. isn't it?

  461. Because water

  462. is so often

  463. unexpected

  464. in the desert.

  465. But it's also

  466. delightful.

  467. It's powerful.

  468. The delightfulness

  469. of suddenly seeing

  470. the desert

  471. overflowing,

  472. even blooming

  473. in all of its beauty.

  474. That's the image

  475. we're given

  476. for when God

  477. restores the fortunes

  478. of his people.

  479. Unexpected,

  480. delightful,

  481. glorious,

  482. wonderful times

  483. of refreshing

  484. from the hand

  485. of the Lord.

  486. Lord.

  487. And we should

  488. look forward

  489. to that.

  490. We should

  491. anticipate that.

  492. We should be

  493. confident in that.

  494. But there's also

  495. a kind of hard

  496. realism in this

  497. psalm,

  498. isn't there?

  499. The psalmist

  500. is never sentimental,

  501. but is always

  502. honest.

  503. Verses 5

  504. and 6.

  505. Those who

  506. sow in tears

  507. shall reap

  508. with shouts

  509. of joy.

  510. He who

  511. goes out

  512. weeping,

  513. bearing the

  514. seed for

  515. sowing,

  516. shall come

  517. home with

  518. shouts of

  519. joy,

  520. bringing his

  521. sheaves

  522. with him.

  523. This is,

  524. of course,

  525. the picture

  526. of a farmer,

  527. isn't it?

  528. A farmer

  529. who begins

  530. by sowing

  531. the seed

  532. and then

  533. only months

  534. later is able

  535. to reap

  536. the harvest.

  537. And the

  538. picture drawn

  539. here is of

  540. a farmer

  541. who finds

  542. it hard

  543. to do

  544. that work,

  545. knowing that

  546. there will

  547. be fruit

  548. to it

  549. only months

  550. later,

  551. and then

  552. only should

  553. the Lord

  554. bless his

  555. labor.

  556. So the

  557. sowing is

  558. seen as

  559. this hard

  560. struggle

  561. of weeping.

  562. But the

  563. promise is

  564. that out

  565. of that

  566. hard struggle

  567. will come

  568. blessing

  569. and fruit

  570. and joy.

  571. And that's

  572. a description

  573. of the

  574. Christian

  575. life,

  576. isn't it?

  577. First

  578. comes

  579. suffering

  580. and then

  581. comes

  582. glory.

  583. First

  584. comes

  585. suffering

  586. and then

  587. comes

  588. glory.

  589. It's the

  590. picture of

  591. David's

  592. life as

  593. he suffered

  594. under

  595. Saul

  596. and only

  597. later

  598. enjoyed

  599. the fruits

  600. of kingship.

  601. It's

  602. certainly

  603. the picture

  604. of our

  605. Lord

  606. Jesus

  607. Christ

  608. who

  609. suffered

  610. in this

  611. world

  612. only

  613. later

  614. to enjoy

  615. the fruits

  616. of

  617. resurrection,

  618. the glory

  619. of

  620. resurrection.

  621. And the

  622. psalmist

  623. says to

  624. us,

  625. you know,

  626. this may

  627. well be

  628. the picture

  629. of your

  630. life too.

  631. It may

  632. well be

  633. that in

  634. the present

  635. it is

  636. not so

  637. clearly

  638. good.

  639. It is

  640. not so

  641. obviously

  642. joyful.

  643. It is

  644. not so

  645. evidently

  646. wonderful

  647. that this

  648. life is

  649. and often

  650. can be

  651. a life

  652. of weeping.

  653. I

  654. often

  655. think about

  656. this

  657. sometimes

  658. at

  659. baptism

  660. recalling

  661. the

  662. words

  663. of one

  664. of the

  665. old

  666. Reformation

  667. era

  668. forms

  669. for

  670. baptism.

  671. Some

  672. of you

  673. may

  674. know

  675. it.

  676. The

  677. prayer

  678. that

  679. God

  680. in

  681. his

  682. mercy

  683. would

  684. be

  685. pleased

  686. to

  687. call

  688. out

  689. of

  690. this

  691. life

  692. this

  693. one

  694. baptized

  695. out

  696. of

  697. this

  698. life

  699. which

  700. is

  701. nothing

  702. but

  703. a

  704. constant

  705. death.

  706. I've

  707. wondered

  708. is that

  709. too

  710. strong?

  711. does

  712. that

  713. too

  714. much

  715. deny

  716. the

  717. blessings

  718. of

  719. this

  720. life?

  721. The

  722. joys

  723. of

  724. this

  725. life?

  726. I

  727. think

  728. it's

  729. right

  730. to

  731. say

  732. that

  733. this

  734. life

  735. even

  736. amidst

  737. blessing

  738. and

  739. joy

  740. is

  741. filled

  742. so

  743. often

  744. with

  745. suffering

  746. from

  747. sin

  748. that

  749. it

  750. can

  751. be

  752. a

  753. veil

  754. of

  755. tears

  756. if

  757. not

  758. only

  759. at

  760. least

  761. really

  762. and

  763. truly.

  764. But

  765. there

  766. is a

  767. promise

  768. here

  769. isn't

  770. there?

  771. There

  772. is a

  773. promise

  774. of

  775. laughter

  776. of

  777. shouts

  778. of

  779. joy

  780. there's

  781. a

  782. promise

  783. of

  784. times

  785. of

  786. refreshment

  787. even

  788. here

  789. in

  790. this

  791. life.

  792. But

  793. Acts

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  794. chapter

  795. 3

  796. not

  797. only

  798. promises

  799. times

  800. of

  801. refreshment

  802. in

  803. this

  804. life

  805. but

  806. also

  807. it

  808. calls

  809. us

  810. to

  811. look

  812. forward

  813. doesn't

  814. it?

  815. To

  816. a

  817. time

  818. of

  819. restoration

  820. of

  821. everything.

  822. Acts

    Acts 3:20

  823. chapter

  824. 3

  825. verse

  826. 20

  827. Pray

  828. that

  829. he

  830. may

  831. send

  832. the

  833. Christ

  834. appointed

  835. for

  836. you

  837. Jesus

  838. who

  839. must

  840. remain

  841. in

  842. heaven

  843. until

  844. the

  845. time

  846. comes

  847. for

  848. God

  849. to

  850. restore

  851. everything.

  852. And at

  853. the beginning

  854. of a

  855. new year

  856. it's

  857. good

  858. for us

  859. to remember

  860. that a

  861. time is

  862. coming

  863. when God

  864. will

  865. restore

  866. everything

  867. when

  868. Jesus

  869. Christ

  870. returns

  871. in

  872. glory.

  873. That's

  874. our ultimate

  875. hope

  876. isn't

  877. it?

  878. God

  879. that

  880. no

  881. matter

  882. how

  883. good

  884. the

  885. harvest

  886. of

  887. 2022

  888. will

  889. be,

  890. no

  891. matter

  892. how

  893. glad

  894. we

  895. are

  896. to

  897. turn

  898. the

  899. page

  900. of

  901. the

  902. calendar,

  903. to

  904. move

  905. on

  906. from

  907. difficult

  908. times

  909. for

  910. so

  911. many

  912. of

  913. us

  914. of

  915. isolation,

  916. of

  917. illness,

  918. of

  919. the

  920. needs

  921. we

  922. have

  923. as

  924. sinful

  925. creatures

  926. in

  927. a

  928. sinful

  929. world,

  930. that

  931. this

  932. is

  933. not

  934. a

  935. restoration

  936. of

  937. everything,

  938. but a

  939. restoration

  940. is

  941. promised

  942. to

  943. us

  944. one

  945. day

  946. in

  947. the

  948. glorious

  949. appearing

  950. of

  951. our

  952. Lord

  953. Jesus

  954. Christ.

  955. And

  956. whatever

  957. the

  958. weeping

  959. of

  960. this

  961. life

  962. has

  963. been,

  964. the

  965. joy

  966. of

  967. that

  968. great

  969. day

  970. will

  971. be

  972. unimaginable

  973. to

  974. everyone

  975. who

  976. is

  977. in

  978. Christ.

  979. We

  980. will

  981. be

  982. like

  983. those

  984. who

  985. dream.

  986. Then

  987. there

  988. will

  989. be

  990. laughter

  991. and

  992. shouts

  993. of

  994. joy

  995. among

  996. the

  997. righteous.

  998. So

  999. as we

  1000. remember

  1001. God's

  1002. restoring

  1003. grace

  1004. in

  1005. the

  1006. past

  1007. and

  1008. as

  1009. we

  1010. look

  1011. forward

  1012. to

  1013. God's

  1014. restoring

  1015. grace

  1016. in

  1017. the

  1018. future,

  1019. what

  1020. are

  1021. we

  1022. to

  1023. do

  1024. in

  1025. the

  1026. present?

  1027. Well,

  1028. this

  1029. psalm

  1030. would

  1031. say

  1032. to

  1033. us

  1034. we're

  1035. to

  1036. pray.

  1037. Verse

  1038. 4

  1039. is a

  1040. prayer.

  1041. Restore

  1042. our

  1043. fortunes,

  1044. O

  1045. Lord.

  1046. In

  1047. this

  1048. life,

  1049. one of

  1050. the

  1051. great

  1052. privileges

  1053. and

  1054. one

  1055. of

  1056. the

  1057. great

  1058. tasks

  1059. to

  1060. which

  1061. we are

  1062. called

  1063. is the

  1064. task

  1065. of

  1066. prayer.

  1067. Many

  1068. of you

  1069. will

  1070. know

  1071. one of

  1072. John

  1073. Calvin's

  1074. more

  1075. profound

  1076. statements

  1077. that

  1078. prayer

  1079. is the

  1080. chief

  1081. exercise

  1082. of

  1083. our

  1084. faith.

  1085. How

  1086. do we

  1087. build up

  1088. our

  1089. faith?

  1090. It's

  1091. by

  1092. praying.

  1093. Because

  1094. prayer

  1095. is a

  1096. turning

  1097. to

  1098. God

  1099. with

  1100. an

  1101. acknowledgement

  1102. that

  1103. he is

  1104. in

  1105. charge.

  1106. God

  1107. that

  1108. he is

  1109. the

  1110. one

  1111. who

  1112. can

  1113. do

  1114. what

  1115. we

  1116. cannot

  1117. do

  1118. for

  1119. ourselves.

  1120. That

  1121. he is

  1122. the

  1123. one

  1124. who

  1125. undergirds

  1126. us

  1127. with the

  1128. loving

  1129. arms

  1130. of a

  1131. father.

  1132. That

  1133. he is

  1134. the

  1135. one

  1136. who

  1137. has

  1138. given

  1139. us

  1140. the

  1141. gift

  1142. of

  1143. his

  1144. own

  1145. son

  1146. to

  1147. save

  1148. us

  1149. and

  1150. to

  1151. preserve

  1152. us.

  1153. That

  1154. he

  1155. is

  1156. the

  1157. one

  1158. who

  1159. sends

  1160. his

  1161. spirit

  1162. into

  1163. our

  1164. midst

  1165. to

  1166. refresh

  1167. us.

  1168. So it

  1169. is good

  1170. for us

  1171. to call

  1172. upon

  1173. him,

  1174. to plead

  1175. with

  1176. him,

  1177. that he

  1178. might

  1179. restore

  1180. us

  1181. when we

  1182. are in

  1183. need

  1184. of

  1185. times

  1186. of

  1187. refreshing,

  1188. times

  1189. of

  1190. restoration.

  1191. But we

  1192. should be

  1193. praying,

  1194. shouldn't we,

  1195. also for

  1196. one another.

  1197. We should

  1198. be praying

  1199. for the

  1200. difficult

  1201. times that

  1202. some of

  1203. us

  1204. face.

  1205. We

  1206. should be

  1207. praying

  1208. for the

  1209. church

  1210. around

  1211. the

  1212. world,

  1213. some

  1214. of our

  1215. brothers

  1216. and sisters

  1217. who are

  1218. persecuted,

  1219. or living

  1220. in parts

  1221. of the

  1222. world

  1223. where the

  1224. church

  1225. has become

  1226. so old

  1227. and weak

  1228. or

  1229. impressed

  1230. more with

  1231. itself

  1232. than with

  1233. the Savior

  1234. that it

  1235. seems

  1236. hardly to

  1237. function.

  1238. We

  1239. should be

  1240. praying

  1241. with the

  1242. psalmist,

  1243. restore

  1244. our

  1245. fortunes,

  1246. O

  1247. Lord.

  1248. But as

  1249. we pray,

  1250. we should

  1251. remember,

  1252. too,

  1253. that our

  1254. Lord Jesus

  1255. Christ is

  1256. still praying

  1257. for us.

  1258. He

  1259. still

  1260. knows

  1261. our

  1262. needs.

  1263. He

  1264. still

  1265. sees

  1266. us

  1267. in

  1268. our

  1269. difficulties.

  1270. He

  1271. prays

  1272. to the

  1273. Father

  1274. for us

  1275. that we

  1276. might be

  1277. guarded

  1278. and

  1279. protected.

  1280. Hebrews

  1281. 7.25

  1282. tells us

  1283. He

  1284. always

  1285. intercedes

  1286. for His

  1287. people.

  1288. Hebrews

  1289. 4.14

  1290. reminds us

  1291. He

  1292. is still

  1293. the

  1294. great

  1295. high

  1296. priest.

  1297. Hebrews

  1298. 9.24

  1299. tells us

  1300. He

  1301. appears

  1302. in

  1303. God's

  1304. presence

  1305. for us.

  1306. Isaiah

  1307. 53.13

  1308. reminds us

  1309. He

  1310. made

  1311. intercession

  1312. for

  1313. transgressors.

  1314. And that's

  1315. a critical

  1316. part of

  1317. the ministry

  1318. of our

  1319. Lord Jesus

  1320. Christ

  1321. that is

  1322. still

  1323. going on

  1324. to this

  1325. day.

  1326. Does that

  1327. encourage you

  1328. in your own

  1329. praying?

  1330. that we

  1331. have a

  1332. Savior

  1333. who also

  1334. prays

  1335. for us

  1336. that when

  1337. we

  1338. struggle

  1339. we can

  1340. know

  1341. as our

  1342. Lord Jesus

  1343. Christ

  1344. said to

  1345. Peter

  1346. I have

  1347. prayed

  1348. for you

  1349. that your

  1350. faith may

  1351. not fail.

  1352. I have

  1353. prayed

  1354. for you

  1355. so go

  1356. and strengthen

  1357. the brothers

  1358. in the

  1359. faith.

  1360. Often

  1361. it seems

  1362. we pray

  1363. just thinking

  1364. that if

  1365. only we

  1366. could pray

  1367. hard enough

  1368. or long

  1369. enough

  1370. or loud

  1371. enough

  1372. then perhaps

  1373. then God

  1374. would hear

  1375. us.

  1376. But we

  1377. need to

  1378. remember

  1379. that Jesus

  1380. stands there

  1381. next to us

  1382. and for us

  1383. praying with

  1384. us as well

  1385. as for us

  1386. carrying our

  1387. prayers to

  1388. the Father

  1389. standing before

  1390. the Father

  1391. as the

  1392. sacrifice

  1393. with his

  1394. wounds yet

  1395. there present

  1396. in heaven

  1397. caring for

  1398. us

  1399. guarding

  1400. us

  1401. always ready

  1402. to restore

  1403. us.

  1404. Romans

  1405. 8.34

  1406. says

  1407. Christ

  1408. is at

  1409. the right

  1410. hand of

  1411. God

  1412. and is

  1413. also

  1414. interceding

  1415. for us.

  1416. He's

  1417. there as

  1418. the glorified

  1419. Savior.

  1420. He's

  1421. there as

  1422. the Son

  1423. seated at

  1424. the place

  1425. of honor

  1426. but he's

  1427. also there

  1428. interceding

  1429. still

  1430. providing

  1431. still

  1432. praying

  1433. still

  1434. ready

  1435. to restore

  1436. us

  1437. in our

  1438. need.

  1439. And what

  1440. an encouragement

  1441. is that we

  1442. have such a

  1443. Savior

  1444. and such

  1445. a mediator

  1446. who always

  1447. cares for

  1448. us

  1449. who never

  1450. forgets

  1451. us

  1452. who never

  1453. lets us

  1454. go

  1455. who never

  1456. ceases

  1457. to provide

  1458. so that

  1459. when we

  1460. plead to

  1461. God

  1462. to restore

  1463. our fortunes

  1464. we can have

  1465. confidence

  1466. when we

  1467. look back

  1468. in joy

  1469. at God's

  1470. restoring

  1471. grace

  1472. and when we

  1473. look forward

  1474. in joy

  1475. with anticipation

  1476. of God's

  1477. restoring

  1478. grace

  1479. we look

  1480. ultimately

  1481. at our

  1482. Savior

  1483. and then

  1484. in Christ

  1485. we can

  1486. say

  1487. my God

  1488. goes before

  1489. me

  1490. my God

  1491. goes with

  1492. me

  1493. my God

  1494. surrounds

  1495. me

  1496. my God

  1497. provides

  1498. for me

  1499. even

  1500. water

  1501. in the

  1502. desert

  1503. even

  1504. water

  1505. in the

  1506. desert

  1507. whether

  1508. this is

  1509. a year

  1510. of great

  1511. blessing

  1512. or a

  1513. year

  1514. of much

  1515. weeping

  1516. the promise

  1517. of the

  1518. Lord

  1519. stands

  1520. strong

  1521. weeping

  1522. may last

  1523. for a

  1524. night

  1525. but joy

  1526. comes

  1527. in the

  1528. morning

  1529. sowing

  1530. may be

  1531. tough

  1532. in the

  1533. springtime

  1534. but oh

  1535. it is

  1536. sweet

  1537. in the

  1538. autumn

  1539. when the

  1540. sheaves

  1541. are gathered

  1542. and that's

  1543. the promise

  1544. that God

  1545. will restore

  1546. all things

  1547. one day

  1548. that there

  1549. is a

  1550. future

  1551. for the

  1552. people

  1553. of God

  1554. but even

  1555. in the

  1556. meantime

  1557. even

  1558. now

  1559. in the

  1560. meantime

  1561. God

  1562. promises

  1563. that he

  1564. will season

  1565. our lives

  1566. with refreshment

  1567. that he

  1568. will use

  1569. his gracious

  1570. power

  1571. to sustain

  1572. us

  1573. that in

  1574. our need

  1575. he provides

  1576. that in

  1577. our weakness

  1578. he is strong

  1579. that in

  1580. our hunger

  1581. and in

  1582. our thirst

  1583. he prepares

  1584. a table

  1585. for us

  1586. in the

  1587. wilderness

  1588. before the

  1589. presence

  1590. of our

  1591. enemies

  1592. that he

  1593. feeds us

  1594. with himself

  1595. that our

  1596. cup

  1597. overflows

  1598. even as we

  1599. come to hear

  1600. the word

  1601. preached to us

  1602. on the

  1603. Lord's day

  1604. when we see

  1605. the eternal

  1606. word made

  1607. visible

  1608. in baptism

  1609. in the

  1610. Lord's

  1611. supper

  1612. those signs

  1613. and seals

  1614. of the

  1615. covenant

  1616. of grace

  1617. we are

  1618. nourished

  1619. and we

  1620. can marvel

  1621. in great

  1622. confidence

  1623. with the

  1624. psalmist

  1625. and say

  1626. God

  1627. has restored

  1628. my soul

  1629. and we

  1630. can say

  1631. with the

  1632. psalmist

  1633. surely

  1634. surely

  1635. goodness

  1636. and mercy

  1637. will follow

  1638. me all

  1639. the days

  1640. of my

  1641. life

  1642. for the

  1643. Lord

  1644. has done

  1645. great

  1646. things

  1647. for us

  1648. the

  1649. Lord

  1650. has done

  1651. great

  1652. things

  1653. for us

  1654. we are

  1655. glad

  1656. let's

  1657. pray to

  1658. that end

  1659. for the

  1660. year

  1661. 2022

  1662. amen

  1663. let us

  1664. pray

  1665. oh

  1666. Lord

  1667. how rich

  1668. and encouraging

  1669. is your

  1670. word

  1671. and how

  1672. precious

  1673. is the

  1674. promise

  1675. that

  1676. in Jesus

  1677. Christ

  1678. you have

  1679. done

  1680. great

  1681. things

  1682. for us

  1683. and how

  1684. thankful

  1685. we are

  1686. that beyond

  1687. what we

  1688. could hope

  1689. beyond

  1690. what we

  1691. could do

  1692. you are

  1693. our

  1694. righteousness

  1695. and you

  1696. are our

  1697. refuge

  1698. and you

  1699. are our

  1700. rest

  1701. and we

  1702. pray that

  1703. out of

  1704. that great

  1705. saving

  1706. work

  1707. that you

  1708. have done

  1709. for us

  1710. in Jesus

  1711. Christ

  1712. that we

  1713. might be

  1714. a people

  1715. who knows

  1716. how great

  1717. a God

  1718. we have

  1719. that knows

  1720. the greatness

  1721. of our

  1722. sin and

  1723. misery

  1724. in our

  1725. guilt

  1726. that knows

  1727. how great

  1728. a deliverer

  1729. you are

  1730. in your

  1731. grace

  1732. and that

  1733. knows how

  1734. we are

  1735. to be

  1736. thankful

  1737. to you

  1738. for such

  1739. a deliverance

  1740. and such

  1741. a restoration

  1742. and gratitude

  1743. but Lord

  1744. we would also

  1745. be bold

  1746. to pray

  1747. that often

  1748. in the new

  1749. year

  1750. we might

  1751. be able

  1752. to say

  1753. with joy

  1754. the Lord

  1755. has done

  1756. great things

  1757. for us

  1758. but we

  1759. would pray

  1760. that even

  1761. in the

  1762. times of

  1763. weeping

  1764. that must

  1765. come

  1766. we would

  1767. still say

  1768. the Lord

  1769. has done

  1770. great things

  1771. for us

  1772. and we

  1773. pray that

  1774. in this

  1775. coming year

  1776. our hearts

  1777. over and

  1778. over again

  1779. would be

  1780. filled with

  1781. praise

  1782. and prayer

  1783. for you

  1784. are great

  1785. and good

  1786. beyond our

  1787. imagining

  1788. and we

  1789. would also

  1790. pray

  1791. oh Lord

  1792. come

  1793. quickly

  1794. come

  1795. quickly

  1796. Lord

  1797. Jesus

  1798. and restore

  1799. everything

  1800. and fill

  1801. our hearts

  1802. and our

  1803. mouths

  1804. with laughter

  1805. and with

  1806. songs of

  1807. joy

  1808. forevermore

  1809. hear us

  1810. for we pray

  1811. in Jesus

  1812. name

  1813. Amen

  1814. excuse me

  1815. would you

  1816. please stand

  1817. for our

  1818. final item

  1819. of praise

  1820. this morning

  1821. we sang

  1822. Psalm 23

  1823. in the

  1824. Sing Psalms

  1825. version

  1826. so I thought

  1827. tonight we would

  1828. sing it in the

  1829. superior version

  1830. of the old

  1831. Scottish Psalter

  1832. so let us

  1833. sing the words

  1834. of the Psalm

  1835. together
