  1. The scripture reading comes from Deuteronomy chapter 5.

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen.

  3. And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them,

  4. Hear, O Israels, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today,

  5. and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.

  6. The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Herob,

  7. not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant,

  8. but with us, who are all of us here alive today.

  9. The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain,

  10. out of the midst of the fire,

  11. while I stood between the Lord and you at that time

  12. to declare to you the word of the Lord.

  13. For you were afraid because of the fire,

  14. and you did not go up into the mountain.

  15. He said, I'm the Lord your God,

  16. who brought you out of the land of Egypt,

  17. out of the house of slavery.

  18. You shall have no other gods before me.

  19. You shall not make for yourself a carved image

  20. or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above

  21. or that is in the earth beneath

  22. or that is in the water under the earth.

  23. You shall not bow down to them or serve them,

  24. for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,

  25. visiting the equities of the fathers on the children

  26. to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

  27. but showing steadfast love to the thousands of those

  28. who love me and keep my commandments.

  29. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,

  30. for the Lord will not behold him guiltless

  31. who takes his name in vain.

  32. Observe the Sabbath to keep it holy

  33. as the Lord your God commanded you.

  34. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

  35. but the seventh is the Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  36. On it you shall not do any work,

  37. you or your son or your daughter

  38. or your male servant or your female servant

  39. or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock

  40. or the sojourner who is within your gates,

  41. that your male servant and your female servant

  42. may rest as well as you.

  43. You shall remember that you were a slave

  44. in the land of Egypt,

  45. and the Lord your God brought you out from there

  46. with mighty hand and an outstretched arm.

  47. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you

  48. to keep the Sabbath day.

  49. Honor your father and your mother

  50. as the Lord of your God commanded you,

  51. that your days may be long

  52. and that it may go well with you in the land

  53. that the Lord your God has given you.

  54. You shall not murder,

  55. and you shall not commit adultery,

  56. and you shall not steal,

  57. and you shall not bear false witness

  58. against your neighbor,

  59. and you shall not covet your neighbor's wife,

  60. and you shall not desire your neighbor's house,

  61. his field,

  62. or his male servant,

  63. or his female servant,

  64. his ox,

  65. or his donkey,

  66. or anything that is your neighbor's.

  67. This is the word of God.

  68. Great.

  69. Thank you, Sylvie.

  70. And good morning, Watermark Church.

  71. It is great to be back with you,

  72. I guess in a technological sense.

  73. It's wonderful to be able to gather as a family

  74. and around God's Word

  75. and to praise Him

  76. and to pray together as a church family.

  77. We were so hoping to be back together this week,

  78. but as Oscar said,

  79. alas, not yet,

  80. but hopefully soon,

  81. we'll be back at Ebenezer together.

  82. Just one last thing up front.

  83. I hope that you were as encouraged

  84. and edified as I was last week

  85. by the One Church Hong Kong service.

  86. It was so wonderful gathering

  87. as a church across the city together

  88. to celebrate what God is doing in our city,

  89. and I hope you were encouraged.

  90. It was a wonderful service for our city.

  91. Will you join me as we pray?

  92. Let's pray together,

  93. commit our time before God,

  94. and ask Him to speak to us from His Word,

  95. and then we're going to dive into

  96. the second of the Ten Commandments.

  97. Let's pray together.

  98. Lord Jesus Christ,

  99. Sovereign Father,

  100. Holy Spirit,

  101. we come before you this morning,

  102. this 10th of May,

  103. to worship you and to praise you,

  104. to give you the worship that you are due,

  105. but also, Father,

  106. to align our own hearts towards you.

  107. God, as we look at your Word this morning,

  108. we right up front need to acknowledge

  109. that we are so often tempted

  110. to stray and to put our hope and trust

  111. in all sorts of false gods and idols

  112. that really cannot satisfy.

  113. But you, Christ, have the words of life.

  114. You, Christ, are life.

  115. You, Christ, are the life-giving,

  116. life-breathing, sovereign God.

  117. And as we come and align our hearts with you,

  118. our own hearts and souls are filled with life.

  119. God, we pray this morning, do that to us.

  120. God, as we come back to you

  121. and listen to your Word,

  122. won't you breathe your life into us?

  123. Won't you give us fresh life this morning?

  124. God, give us fresh hope.

  125. Give us fresh confidence.

  126. Give us fresh security and peace in you.

  127. God, open our eyes to see your majesty

  128. and your glory.

  129. Help us, God, to trust you.

  130. We acknowledge, Father,

  131. that we have so many doubts and questions at times.

  132. God, open our eyes to see your glory.

  133. Just as we sang that song a little while ago

  134. about you deserve the greater glory,

  135. I was just reminded,

  136. God, I need to see your glory.

  137. I want to see your glory.

  138. God, do that for us this morning, we pray.

  139. Not just this morning, this week.

  140. Tomorrow, the rest of this week,

  141. as we prepare for kids to go back to school

  142. and offices to resume.

  143. God, show us your glory.

  144. Help us to see your majesty

  145. and therefore to worship you.

  146. We pray these things in your wonderful and powerful name.

  147. Amen.

  148. Amen.

  149. As a church, we are looking at this extremely well-known passage of Scripture

  150. in the Old Testament,

  151. this set of instructions that has come to be known as the Ten Commandments.

  152. But they're not commandments in any kind of arbitrary sense of the word,

  153. like ten rules or ten pieces of legislation.

  154. These are God's words that are given to us for our abundance,

  155. for our flourishing,

  156. and really intended for God's people to prosper.

  157. Now, one of the great privileges that we have

  158. is we get to see these ten words for abundant life

  159. in the context, the historical context in which they're given.

  160. And that's really important.

  161. In fact, these ten words are given twice in the Old Testament.

  162. The first time, they are given in Exodus chapter 20,

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  163. which happens right after Israel leaves Egypt.

  164. They are saved by the blood of the Lamb.

  165. They leave over Passover.

  166. They pass through the waters,

  167. and they enter into the wilderness.

  168. And there they are constituted as the nation of Israel,

  169. as God's people.

  170. And God gives His people these words of instruction

  171. for their flourishing and for abundant life.

  172. And that's really important,

  173. because what that tells us is that

  174. these words aren't given in order that Israel might become God's people.

  175. They're given because they are God's people.

  176. These words aren't given in order that Israel might earn

  177. or merit God's favor or His acceptance.

  178. They're given because they already have His favor.

  179. They already have His acceptance.

  180. They already are His chosen people.

  181. These words are intended for God's people

  182. to become everything that He wished and wanted for them to become.

  183. But then they're given a second time in Deuteronomy chapter 5,

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  184. and that's the passage that we're looking at in this series.

  185. And what happens is that the book of Deuteronomy

  186. serves as a kind of pivot or a hinge

  187. between two sections in Israel's history.

  188. The first section we've just spoken about,

  189. they leave Egypt, they go into the wilderness.

  190. And after the book of Deuteronomy,

  191. Israel enters the second portion of their history,

  192. which is when they go into the promised land,

  193. they settle there, they establish the kingdom

  194. under Saul and David,

  195. and they really become the nation of Israel

  196. in the promised land.

  197. And in between these two sections of the history

  198. lies the book of Deuteronomy.

  199. And in the book of Deuteronomy,

  200. Moses gives the sermon to the people of God,

  201. reminding them of God's faithfulness,

  202. His goodness, and His good words to them,

  203. and encouraging them and urging them

  204. that as they go into the promised land

  205. to remember God's words,

  206. to obey them, that they will prosper.

  207. And the book of Deuteronomy is Moses' sermon,

  208. his parting words before he dies,

  209. to God's people saying,

  210. as you go into the promised land,

  211. remember your God and remember His words to you.

  212. The question is,

  213. how's Israel gonna respond?

  214. Are they gonna obey God's word

  215. and experience prosper and abundance and flourishing?

  216. Or are they gonna reject it and experience demise?

  217. And the rest of the Old Testament,

  218. from Deuteronomy onwards,

  219. really catalogues Israel's decisions

  220. of how they respond to God and His word.

  221. And that same question applies for us today.

  222. For those of us that are part of God's people,

  223. how are we gonna respond to God's word

  224. and His track record of faithfulness?

  225. Are we gonna trust Him and obey Him,

  226. experience His flourishing and His abundance?

  227. Or are we gonna reject it and experience demise?

  228. Now today we get to the second of these 10 commandments.

  229. And there's three things I want us to see in this passage.

  230. What is the second commandment, firstly?

  231. Secondly, how do we break it or why do we break it?

  232. And thirdly, where do we find our hope?

  233. Where do we find the solution?

  234. So what is the commandment?

  235. Why do we break it?

  236. Where are we gonna find our hope?

  237. So what is the second commandment?

  238. Well, Sylvie read it to us, but this is what it says.

  239. Do not make an idol for yourself in the shape of anything,

  240. in the heavens above, the earth below,

  241. or underneath the earth and the waters beneath the sea.

  242. Do not bow down and worship them.

  243. Do not serve them.

  244. Because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,

  245. punishing the children for the father's iniquity

  246. to the third and fourth generation for those who hate me,

  247. but showing faithful, steadfast love

  248. to a thousand generations of those who love me

  249. and keep my commands.

  250. Now, straight away, you should see

  251. this very clear connection

  252. between the first and the second commandment.

  253. The first commandment we looked at two weeks ago,

  254. you shall have no other gods before me.

  255. And Moses is saying here that it's impossible

  256. to break the second commandment

  257. without breaking the first one.

  258. You can't have other gods or idols in your life

  259. without also, not, without breaking the first commandment

  260. of having no other gods beside me.

  261. In many ways, the first and second commandment

  262. are two sides of the same coin.

  263. They are intrinsically linked together.

  264. When we worship or revere idols or false gods in our lives,

  265. the one true God is no longer first in our heart.

  266. He no longer has exclusive rights

  267. to our affections and our devotions.

  268. Now, in the second commandment,

  269. there are actually two things that God is forbidding.

  270. On the one hand, the second commandment

  271. is regulating what we worship,

  272. that we worship the one true God alone.

  273. By forbidding idol worship,

  274. God is forbidding His people

  275. from coming to church on Sundays,

  276. declaring their allegiance and their worship to God,

  277. and yet on Monday to Friday,

  278. going and finding our hope and our trust in other gods.

  279. God is calling us to live all of our lives devoted to Him.

  280. You see, we may functionally call ourselves Christians,

  281. but actually, if our hope and our confidence

  282. isn't something else, your children or your career,

  283. that is functionally your God.

  284. We could call ourselves atheists, agnostics,

  285. worshipers of no God,

  286. but actually, if our hope and trust is in our career,

  287. our work, our money, our social approval,

  288. what people think of us,

  289. functionally, that is our God.

  290. That is what we worship.

  291. Now, I'm sure we realize that

  292. whatever thing takes on a God-like status in our life,

  293. whatever thing becomes our God

  294. has its own version of the Ten Commandments.

  295. For instance, picture your children

  296. being the most important thing in your life,

  297. the thing for which you live and exist,

  298. the thing that gives you hope and security and peace.

  299. Maybe some of your Ten Commandments might sound like this.

  300. You shall have no other interests besides your children.

  301. You shall make sure your child

  302. has all the opportunities they can.

  303. Maybe social approval,

  304. society's approval of you,

  305. is the most important thing.

  306. Then the Ten Commandments might look like this.

  307. You shall always look your confident best.

  308. You shall never make sure anybody sees any faults in you.

  309. But hoping and trusting in anything

  310. other than the sovereign God

  311. always leads to our demise and our ruin.

  312. But there's actually something else going on

  313. in the Second Commandments here.

  314. God is not only regulating what we worship,

  315. Him, the one true God,

  316. He's also regulating how we worship.

  317. In other words, in the Second Commandment,

  318. God is not only forbidding His people

  319. from worshiping false gods,

  320. He's also forbidding us from worshiping Him,

  321. the one true God,

  322. in a false or illegitimate way.

  323. How so?

  324. By creating objects or images

  325. that we think represent God,

  326. infusing them with special powers

  327. or ascribing to them spiritual properties

  328. and using them in our worship

  329. through which we worship God.

  330. It's not just that God is forbidding us

  331. from worshiping false gods

  332. like money or sex or career or power.

  333. He's also instructing us not to worship Him

  334. by taking some object, some image,

  335. infusing it with power

  336. and using it in our worship of Him.

  337. In Exodus 32, there's this famous example of this.

  338. And it actually happens while Moses is on the mountain

  339. busy getting the Ten Commandments.

  340. He's up there for about six weeks, 40 days.

  341. The Israelites are below

  342. and they feel like,

  343. where's this Moses guy?

  344. We haven't seen him for a long time.

  345. Maybe he's died up there.

  346. Maybe he's forgotten about us.

  347. And so they come to Moses' brother, Aaron,

  348. the high priest,

  349. and they say,

  350. Aaron, make a God for us

  351. that will go before us.

  352. And so Aaron makes this golden calf

  353. and Moses comes down the mountain,

  354. sees this golden calf

  355. and completely freaks out.

  356. But what's interesting is that

  357. when Aaron makes this golden calf,

  358. he's not suggesting that Israel

  359. stop worshiping Yahweh

  360. and now worship something else.

  361. In fact, he says to them,

  362. as he makes this calf,

  363. he says,

  364. Israel, here is your God.

  365. Here are the gods

  366. that have delivered you from Egypt.

  367. And then he says this.

  368. He says,

  369. Tomorrow there will be a festival,

  370. a celebration to Yahweh.

  371. You see what he's doing there?

  372. He's taking this golden calf

  373. and he's saying,

  374. here is Yahweh.

  375. He's not urging them

  376. to worship Baal or Melech

  377. or some other god

  378. of the nations around them.

  379. But he's taken some physical thing

  380. and he says this represents God.

  381. Now why did the people of Israel want that?

  382. Because as they go into the promised land,

  383. they want some physical,

  384. tangible thing

  385. that they can look to,

  386. hold on to,

  387. something that will assure them

  388. that God is with them,

  389. that God's presence is with them.

  390. As they journey on their way,

  391. they want to know

  392. that God is with them,

  393. something they can look to

  394. or hold on to

  395. for that security

  396. and that assurance

  397. that everything is going to be fine

  398. in the future.

  399. Friends,

  400. we actually find

  401. that we do this all the time.

  402. This thing of

  403. finding some object

  404. and ascribing deity to it

  405. is more common

  406. than we realize.

  407. Maybe,

  408. for some of us,

  409. we have some

  410. special object,

  411. maybe a special ornament,

  412. a pendant

  413. that your mother

  414. or your grandmother gave you

  415. and when you hold it,

  416. you feel closer to God.

  417. You feel His presence.

  418. For some people,

  419. maybe a silver cross

  420. that gives them comfort

  421. while they pray.

  422. They feel God is closer to them

  423. as they hold this cross.

  424. For some people,

  425. maybe it's a certain person.

  426. They spend time

  427. with a priest

  428. or a pastor.

  429. They feel closer to God

  430. like that person

  431. has a direct connection to God

  432. and can help them.

  433. But friends,

  434. all of that is infusing

  435. in some created thing

  436. divine and sacred properties

  437. and treating them reverentially.

  438. We're breaking

  439. the second commandment.

  440. Now,

  441. we may think,

  442. but hang on,

  443. I don't do that.

  444. I don't have any special pendants,

  445. special ornaments.

  446. I don't pray

  447. with the silver cross

  448. or beads.

  449. I don't worship God

  450. like this.

  451. But what about

  452. mental images of God?

  453. How many of us

  454. have created

  455. an image of God

  456. in our mind,

  457. an image of who God is

  458. and we worship

  459. and adore

  460. and revere that God

  461. rather than

  462. the one true God?

  463. How often do we find

  464. people saying,

  465. well,

  466. the God that I believe

  467. in would never say

  468. something like that

  469. or the God that I believe

  470. in would never allow

  471. that to happen

  472. or I don't believe

  473. in a God

  474. who does this

  475. or who judges people.

  476. My God

  477. accepts everybody

  478. unconditionally

  479. just as they are.

  480. What have we done?

  481. We've created

  482. a God in our minds

  483. and we're worshiping

  484. and bowing down

  485. a created God,

  486. a God that is no God

  487. at all.

  488. Maybe the God

  489. that you've created

  490. in your mind

  491. is a God

  492. who is just

  493. always loving,

  494. always accepting

  495. and will never judge

  496. anybody

  497. or hold anybody

  498. accountable.

  499. Well, look at what

  500. our passage says here.

  501. It actually says

  502. very interesting.

  503. God says,

  504. I am the Lord your God,

  505. I'm a jealous God,

  506. visiting the iniquity

  507. of the fathers

  508. on the children

  509. to the third

  510. and fourth generation

  511. of those who hate me.

  512. Now, what's God

  513. saying here?

  514. Well, what he's not saying

  515. is that there's such a thing

  516. called generational curses.

  517. He's not saying

  518. that we need to repent

  519. for the sins

  520. of our ancestors,

  521. the third

  522. and fourth generation.

  523. He's not saying

  524. that if one generation sins,

  525. well, sorry for the next generation,

  526. you're just going to have to

  527. bear the consequences

  528. of your parents' sins.

  529. In the book of Ezekiel,

    Ezekiel 18 chapter mention

  530. chapter 18,

  531. God is very clear

  532. that he doesn't punish children

  533. for the sins

  534. of their parents.

  535. But what he's saying

  536. is that as one generation

  537. rejects God

  538. and worships idols

  539. and false gods,

  540. as the next generation

  541. follow in the footsteps

  542. of their parents,

  543. they're going to bear

  544. the same consequences.

  545. You can't just say,

  546. well, I'm sorry,

  547. that's my upbringing.

  548. That's the way

  549. my parents taught me

  550. how to behave.

  551. You can't excuse

  552. your disobedience

  553. by pointing to your childhood

  554. or your personal history.

  555. What this means

  556. is that as each generation

  557. participates

  558. or perpetuates

  559. the sins of their parents,

  560. they face the same consequences.

  561. But the point is this.

  562. How many people say,

  563. well, God, I believe

  564. and would never judge anybody.

  565. I don't believe

  566. in a God like that.

  567. What have we done?

  568. We've created

  569. an image of God.

  570. We've created

  571. a God in our mind,

  572. a God that we worship,

  573. a God that is no God

  574. at all.

  575. Now, why do we do this?

  576. Because,

  577. like idols,

  578. it's so much safer,

  579. so much easier

  580. to control

  581. a God that is manageable,

  582. a God that we imagine,

  583. a God that suits our needs,

  584. a God that never

  585. disagrees with us

  586. or contradicts us

  587. or challenges us.

  588. And so just like people

  589. in the ancient world

  590. would create

  591. a physical,

  592. material God

  593. that they could

  594. bring out and worship,

  595. a God that would serve them,

  596. a God that they could serve

  597. in their own

  598. comfortable,

  599. convenient way,

  600. so we do the same

  601. with mental images of God.

  602. We create a God

  603. in our mind,

  604. a God that is no God

  605. at all.

  606. And yet,

  607. as Tony Reinke

  608. reminds us,

  609. there is nothing

  610. more dangerous

  611. than religious confidence

  612. in a fake God

  613. of our imagineering.

  614. This is a problem.

  615. Now,

  616. as we said,

  617. we may be tempted to think,

  618. but I don't do this.

  619. 500 years ago,

  620. a French pastor

  621. by the name of John Kelvin,

  622. very famous

  623. and brilliant man,

  624. very perceptively

  625. said this,

  626. this human heart

  627. is an idol factory,

  628. a perpetual creator

  629. of God's.

  630. And what he's saying here

  631. is that every human being

  632. from the time

  633. the world was made

  634. cannot help

  635. but find things

  636. to hold on to,

  637. to look to,

  638. to put our hope

  639. and our confidence in,

  640. things to trust,

  641. things that we look to

  642. to guarantee us

  643. a secure

  644. and prosperous future,

  645. things that we worship.

  646. John Kelvin shows us

  647. that we actually

  648. all look to things

  649. to serve

  650. with the hope

  651. that it will serve us

  652. in return.

  653. Why do we do this?

  654. Well,

  655. here's a couple of reasons.

  656. First reason is

  657. because we're made

  658. in the image of God.

  659. As human beings,

  660. we are made to worship.

  661. It's part of our DNA.

  662. We cannot help

  663. but worship

  664. because we're made

  665. to worship

  666. the one true God.

  667. Now, of course,

  668. the fall has distorted that

  669. and so we worship

  670. created things

  671. rather than

  672. the creator himself.

  673. But part of our DNA,

  674. our heart's wiring

  675. is to worship.

  676. El Mola said it like this,

  677. the human soul

  678. will find

  679. an object of worship

  680. whether on the shelf

  681. in the store,

  682. whether in our bank statements,

  683. whether in the mirror

  684. in front of us,

  685. whether in the temple

  686. or in the heavens,

  687. we were created

  688. to worship.

  689. It's part of our DNA.

  690. But here's another reason

  691. why we do this.

  692. Because idols,

  693. the false gods

  694. that we create,

  695. whether material

  696. in front of us,

  697. whether existential

  698. or whether mental

  699. images of God,

  700. the idols that we

  701. think represent God

  702. and that we worship

  703. and serve,

  704. that we hope

  705. and trust in,

  706. always lie to us

  707. about the ability

  708. to give us life.

  709. You see,

  710. false gods and idols

  711. always promise us

  712. an abundant life,

  713. a life full of joy

  714. and prosperity

  715. and peace.

  716. Don Frame,

  717. who's a brilliant theologian,

  718. said it like this.

  719. He said,

  720. idols lie to us,

  721. not because God

  722. is invisible

  723. and cannot be pictured,

  724. but because idols

  725. fail to picture

  726. what is most important

  727. about God,

  728. His personality,

  729. His ability

  730. to see,

  731. to hear,

  732. to speak,

  733. to interact

  734. with His creatures.

  735. Without personality,

  736. God cannot judge,

  737. which may seem

  738. like good news

  739. to hedonists,

  740. but it's bad news

  741. for the rest of the universe

  742. or anyone

  743. that's suffered injustice.

  744. But without personality,

  745. God also cannot love,

  746. which is bad news

  747. for all of us.

  748. You see, friends,

  749. lifeless idols

  750. cannot impart life to us.

  751. They promise us the world,

  752. but they never deliver.

  753. One of the distinctive things

  754. about the God of the Bible

  755. is that He's personable.

  756. He's relatable

  757. and He infuses us

  758. with life

  759. and fullness of life.

  760. The one who knows us the best

  761. and loves us the most,

  762. as we worship Him

  763. and come and serve Him,

  764. we find that we become

  765. more fully human.

  766. We become like Him.

  767. We become the people

  768. that God's called us

  769. and created us to be.

  770. We experience fullness of life.

  771. And on the contrary,

  772. the false gods

  773. that we are so tempted

  774. to hope and trust in

  775. are lifeless beings.

  776. They promise us the world,

  777. but actually,

  778. they suck life out of us.

  779. They suck joy out of us.

  780. They suck hope out of us.

  781. Just think about the person

  782. that lives for the next promotion at work.

  783. Someone who lives for advancing

  784. in their career.

  785. Are they more gracious?

  786. More understanding?

  787. More gentle?

  788. More sympathetic?

  789. More compassionate

  790. with those around them?

  791. Of course not.

  792. Think about the person

  793. that lives for their children's success.

  794. That their very meaning

  795. is found in their children

  796. being successful and doing well.

  797. Are they more gracious

  798. and understanding

  799. when their children make mistakes?

  800. Are they more compassionate

  801. when things don't go well?

  802. Are they more forgiving

  803. when things go wrong?

  804. Of course not.

  805. Idols promise us life

  806. and joy and freedom,

  807. but they do anything but that.

  808. They suck life out of our lives.

  809. Here's another reason.

  810. Why do we find this so tempting?

  811. Because idols promise us

  812. the illusion of being in control.

  813. The great temptation, of course,

  814. of worshipping a false god

  815. is that it promises us

  816. that we can be in control.

  817. Think about in the ancient days.

  818. You carved this idol

  819. out of a piece of wood

  820. or silver or stone.

  821. You can bring it in when you want,

  822. but you can also put it away.

  823. You can hide it

  824. when it's inconvenient,

  825. but you can also bring it out

  826. when you want to show off to others.

  827. You can worship it how you want,

  828. when you want,

  829. when it's convenient for you to worship

  830. in a way that suits you.

  831. Friends, the false gods

  832. that we hope and trust in

  833. are no different.

  834. They promise us control,

  835. but actually they take control from us.

  836. Think of the person

  837. for whom appearance and beauty

  838. is the most important thing in life.

  839. We might think,

  840. it's not such a big deal.

  841. I just want to take care of my body.

  842. Nothing wrong with wanting to look good.

  843. But scarcely can they walk past the mirror

  844. without stopping and looking.

  845. Almost all day,

  846. you're thinking,

  847. what do people think of me?

  848. How do I look?

  849. How am I perceived by those around me?

  850. A few years ago,

  851. I read a magazine article

  852. in a British magazine

  853. about a young lady

  854. that grappled with this.

  855. And listen to what she says.

  856. She says,

  857. sitting on my bed last December,

  858. I stared at the stacks of makeup

  859. scattered around my bedroom.

  860. I'd counted 213 lipsticks,

  861. 130 eyeshadow palettes,

  862. 102 blushes,

  863. 65 eyeliners,

  864. 17 mascaras.

  865. And that wasn't even all of it.

  866. After doing some initial calculations,

  867. I worked out I'd spent 15,000 pounds,

  868. 150,000 Hong Kong dollars,

  869. in the last year alone.

  870. I was buying makeup as a way

  871. to improve my mood

  872. when I was struggling with depression.

  873. Buying makeup gave me a high,

  874. a feeling of being happy and hopeful,

  875. of being in control.

  876. That made me feel better

  877. after feeling low about my job

  878. and my low self-worth.

  879. The shocking numbers confirmed

  880. what I'd been worried about.

  881. My spending habit

  882. had got seriously out of control.

  883. You see that?

  884. Idols promise us control,

  885. but they take control from us.

  886. Well, think about the person

  887. for whom wealth and financial freedom

  888. is the most important thing in our life.

  889. We tell ourselves,

  890. I'm just being a good steward.

  891. I'm taking care of my family.

  892. I'm looking after my family's wealth.

  893. But have we ever stopped to think

  894. how much is enough?

  895. And when we get there,

  896. what happens?

  897. We suddenly find it's not enough.

  898. We have a figure in our mind

  899. that if I get there,

  900. I'll feel safe,

  901. I'll feel secure,

  902. only to get there

  903. and not feel safe and secure

  904. and need a whole lot more.

  905. John Kelvin reminds us

  906. that all of us,

  907. our hearts are idle factories,

  908. perpetually creating gods

  909. that we hope and trust in.

  910. Now you may say,

  911. Kevin, speak for yourself.

  912. I've grew up in a Christian family.

  913. All I've ever done is worship God.

  914. I've never worshiped false gods around me.

  915. All my days,

  916. since the day I can remember,

  917. I've longed to live and worship God.

  918. Maybe you're not religious at all

  919. and you say,

  920. I don't worship any God.

  921. I'm a free thinker.

  922. I'm free from all religious devotion

  923. and delusion.

  924. Well, in the New Testament,

  925. in the book of Colossians,

  926. the apostle Paul writes a fascinating thing.

  927. In chapter three,

  928. he writes this.

  929. He says,

  930. put to death what is earthly in you,

  931. sexual immorality,

  932. affairs, pornography, lust,

  933. impurity, passions,

  934. evil desires,

  935. and covetousness,

  936. all of which is idolatry.

  937. And then he goes on

  938. to speak about the way

  939. that we use our mouths.

  940. He says,

  941. do not lie to one another,

  942. speaking untruthfully.

  943. Don't get angry.

  944. Stop slandering

  945. and speaking about people

  946. behind their backs.

  947. What's Paul saying here?

  948. He's saying,

  949. the things in our lives

  950. that we're most ashamed about,

  951. the vices that we try and hide

  952. and don't really want anyone to see,

  953. is actually located

  954. in a deeper issue.

  955. Those aren't just habits.

  956. They're not just personality.

  957. It's not just our upbringing.

  958. There's something going on

  959. in our hearts there.

  960. There's something that we hope

  961. and trust in

  962. that is driving

  963. and forming our behavior.

  964. Why do we lie?

  965. Maybe it's because

  966. our image is threatened.

  967. What people think of us

  968. is under threat.

  969. I wonder how many of us

  970. can relate to this.

  971. Your boss says to you,

  972. have you got that report

  973. I asked you to do

  974. and you haven't quite finished it?

  975. And so what do we say?

  976. Yeah, I've done it.

  977. As soon as I get back

  978. to my computer,

  979. I'll send it to you

  980. straight away.

  981. And then we run to our computer

  982. and frantically type away.

  983. What's going on there?

  984. Our image,

  985. our sense of having it all together,

  986. being a good employee

  987. is suddenly under threat.

  988. And so what comes out of our mouth

  989. is not quite the truth

  990. because we need to protect our idol.

  991. Friends,

  992. why do we get angry

  993. with our kids,

  994. with our spouse,

  995. with our boss,

  996. with our colleagues,

  997. with the government?

  998. Is it not because

  999. some idol is under threat?

  1000. Something that we hope

  1001. and trust in,

  1002. something that promises us

  1003. security and peace

  1004. is challenged.

  1005. We cannot help

  1006. but the anger

  1007. in our hearts

  1008. comes out.

1009. Why do people steal money

  1010. and defraud others?

  1011. Very seldom is it

  1012. because they literally

  1013. have no food

1014. to put on the table.

  1015. Often it's because

1016. that sense of being in control,

  1017. the freedom

  1018. that money promises,

  1019. that millions promises,

  1020. is too alluring

  1021. and so people steal

  1022. and defraud others.

  1023. Friends,

  1024. the bad news is

  1025. we're all idol worshippers.

1026. The heart is an idol factory,

  1027. a perpetual creator

  1028. of God's.

1029. What I want to do now

1030. is I want to ask us

1031. just to take two minutes

1032. and I've got a couple of questions

  1033. on the screen

1034. and I would love us to,

1035. if you're with somebody else,

1036. to process these questions together.

  1037. Otherwise,

1038. if you're on your own,

  1039. maybe take a journal

1040. and just write some thoughts

1041. as you process these questions.

  1042. Three questions for us.

1043. What makes you feel secure

  1044. when you have it

1045. and insecure when you don't?

1046. What causes you extreme emotion,

  1047. extreme joy,

  1048. extreme despondency,

  1049. extreme anxiety?

  1050. What do you think

1051. could possibly be an idol,

  1052. a false god,

  1053. in your life?

  1054. Let's take a couple of minutes

1055. and think about that now.

  1056. Okay.

1057. We've looked at the second command

1058. and we've looked at the way

  1059. that all of us

  1060. break it.

1061. So where do we find hope?

1062. Where do we find hope

  1063. for idolaters

  1064. like myself

  1065. and like you?

1066. In the person of Jesus Christ,

  1067. we have the hope

  1068. that we're looking for

  1069. because in the gospel,

1070. we have the good news

  1071. that we don't need

  1072. to create a God.

1073. We don't need to find a God.

1074. We don't need to serve a God

  1075. in the hope

1076. that maybe He will serve us.

  1077. In the gospel,

  1078. in Jesus Christ,

1079. we have the one true God

  1080. who came to us

  1081. to show us

1082. what God is really like,

1083. that we may come to Him

  1084. and find the life

  1085. and the freedom

1086. that we desperately long for

  1087. and we desperately need.

  1088. In Jesus Christ,

  1089. we have the hope

1090. that our hearts long for.

  1091. In his book,

  1092. Counterfeit Gods,

1093. Tim Keller has this amazing line

  1094. where he says,

  1095. in ancient times,

  1096. the gods were bloodthirsty

  1097. and hard to appease.

  1098. They demanded your all.

  1099. The gods of today

  1100. still are.

  1101. Friends,

  1102. in the gospel,

1103. we are given the great news

  1104. that we don't need

  1105. to sacrifice our lives

  1106. because in the gospel,

1107. we have a God who came

  1108. and He sacrificed Himself

  1109. for us

  1110. that we may find

  1111. His favor

  1112. and His blessing.

1113. The gods that we look to

1114. to save and rescue us,

  1115. to give us peace

  1116. and meaning

  1117. and security in life,

  1118. are bloodthirsty

  1119. and hard to appease.

  1120. But in the gospel,

  1121. we discover

  1122. the eternal God,

  1123. the uncreated one,

1124. the one who doesn't demand

  1125. of us

  1126. our blood,

  1127. our sweat,

  1128. and our tears,

1129. but the one who gave

  1130. of His own.

  1131. Friends,

  1132. don't you see

  1133. that we don't need

  1134. to create a God

1135. because God has come to us.

1136. He's come to show us

  1137. what He's really like.

1138. He's come to free us

  1139. from the delusions

  1140. that false gods bring,

  1141. the half-truths

1142. that we tempted to trust in.

1143. He's come to bring us

  1144. the reality

  1145. of who God is.

  1146. But He's also come

  1147. to give us

1148. the peace that we long for.

1149. He's come to give us joy.

1150. He's come to set us free

  1151. from shame.

1152. He's come to give us

  1153. a hope,

  1154. a living hope

  1155. that can never perish

  1156. or spoil or fade.

1157. He's come to give us

  1158. a rock-solid identity

  1159. as He says,

  1160. my sons,

  1161. my daughters,

  1162. I love you.

1163. You are chosen in me.

  1164. In John's gospel,

  1165. John introduces Jesus

  1166. and he says that

  1167. He's the eternal,

  1168. uncreated God.

  1169. He's the one

  1170. through whom

  1171. everything exists.

  1172. Everything in this world

  1173. comes into existence

  1174. because of Jesus.

1175. And then John introduces Jesus

  1176. and says,

  1177. in Him is life.

1178. And the life that was in Him

1179. is the light of the world,

1180. the light of all mankind.

  1181. The false gods

  1182. that we so easily

  1183. tempted to hope

  1184. and trust in

  1185. promise us life,

  1186. but they deliver

  1187. anything but life.

  1188. They promise fullness

  1189. of life,

1190. but actually they suck us

  1191. of life.

  1192. But in Jesus Christ,

  1193. friends,

  1194. we have true life.

1195. Jesus came and He said,

  1196. I am the resurrection

  1197. and life.

  1198. John writes His gospel,

  1199. He says,

  1200. I write these things

  1201. that you may believe

  1202. in Him

  1203. and experience life.

  1204. Jesus says,

1205. I am the bread of life.

  1206. Jesus came

  1207. and in John 17,

  1208. He's praying

  1209. to His Father

  1210. and He says,

  1211. Father,

  1212. this is eternal life

1213. that they may know You

  1214. and the Christ

  1215. that You've sent.

  1216. Friends,

  1217. Jesus,

  1218. the author of life,

  1219. came to die,

1220. to lay down His life

1221. that we who deserve death

1222. may find fullness of life.

  1223. But not only that,

  1224. John not only says

  1225. that in Jesus

  1226. do we find life,

  1227. fascinatingly,

  1228. he says,

  1229. in Jesus,

  1230. we also find grace

  1231. and truth.

  1232. In John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  1233. he says,

1234. the law came through Moses,

  1235. but grace and truth

  1236. came through Jesus.

  1237. You see,

  1238. these false idols

  1239. and the gods

  1240. that we tempted

  1241. to trust in,

  1242. the images of God

  1243. that we make up,

  1244. they lie to us.

  1245. They promise us life,

  1246. but they take life.

  1247. They promise us control

  1248. and they end up

  1249. controlling us.

  1250. In Jesus Christ,

  1251. we have the truth.

1252. Jesus came to show us

1253. what God is truly like.

  1254. He came to reveal

  1255. the Father to us.

  1256. In John,

  1257. he says,

1258. anyone that has seen me

  1259. has seen the Father.

1260. We don't need to be deluded

  1261. by a false version

  1262. of who God is,

  1263. even a version

  1264. that is 70% true.

  1265. When we've seen Jesus,

1266. we've seen the true reality

  1267. of who God is.

1268. But Jesus doesn't only show us

1269. the truth about who God is,

  1270. he also tells us

  1271. the truth about ourselves.

  1272. He tells us

  1273. that we are lost.

  1274. He tells us

  1275. that we're not really

1276. in control of our lives.

  1277. Jesus tells us

1278. that the more we think

1279. we're in control of our lives,

1280. the more lost we actually are.

  1281. Jesus comes

1282. and he tells us the truth

1283. that our sin is a problem.

  1284. A problem that is

1285. going to cost us our lives.

1286. Jesus tells us the truth

1287. that our independence from him

  1288. is actually

  1289. an act of rebellion.

  1290. An act for which

  1291. we'll be held accountable.

1292. An act for one day

1293. which we're going to face judgment.

1294. But Jesus doesn't only come

1295. and bring us the truth.

1296. He also brings us grace.

  1297. You see,

1298. the problem with the false gods

  1299. that we attempted

1300. to trust and hope in,

1301. is that while they promise us

  1302. so much,

1303. the moment we fail them,

  1304. they'll accuse you

  1305. and tell you

  1306. that you're a failure

  1307. and that you're miserable.

1308. Just think about the person

  1309. that loves and serves

  1310. beyond all else,

  1311. that hopes and trusts

  1312. in their children's success.

  1313. That for them,

1314. the success of their children

  1315. is their meaning

  1316. and purpose in life.

  1317. What happens

  1318. when your children rebel?

  1319. What happens

  1320. when your children

1321. don't do what you want?

  1322. What happens

  1323. when your children

  1324. don't follow

  1325. your intended plan

1326. and path for their lives?

1327. You feel like a failure.

  1328. What happens

  1329. when your God

1330. that you hope and trust

1331. in is your career development,

  1332. your path,

1333. and you lose your job?

1334. You don't just feel bad.

  1335. You feel worthless.

1336. You feel like a failure.

  1337. Friends,

1338. Jesus says that all of us

1339. fail Him from time to time.

  1340. We all sin.

  1341. We've all fallen short

1342. of His standards of glory.

  1343. But Jesus Christ

  1344. doesn't point the finger

1345. showing us what a failure we are.

  1346. Jesus comes

1347. and He lifts us up.

1348. And Jesus is not only truth

  1349. but grace.

1350. Jesus came to die on the cross,

1351. to have His hands smashed with nails,

1352. to have blood and water

1353. poured out of the side.

1354. Jesus came to hang on the cross

1355. to take our failures upon Himself.

1356. Jesus came to take our death

1357. that we may find life.

  1358. Friends,

  1359. Jesus is not only

  1360. the one true God,

  1361. the one by whom

  1362. and through whom

  1363. all things were made.

  1364. He's not only

1365. the exact representation of God,

1366. not only does He come

1367. and give us life and truth,

1368. He comes to give grace

1369. to sinners like you and me,

  1370. to idolaters like us.

  1371. Friends,

  1372. in Jesus Christ

1373. we have the one true God,

  1374. the eternal God,

  1375. the uncreated God,

1376. the one who is sovereign

  1377. and majestic.

1378. And yet Jesus didn't hold on

  1379. to His godliness.

  1380. He didn't grasp

  1381. at equality with God.

  1382. But He came

  1383. and He humbled Himself,

  1384. taking on the form

  1385. of a servant.

  1386. And being a servant,

  1387. what would He do?

1388. He would lay down His life,

  1389. taking on death,

  1390. the excruciating death

  1391. of a cross,

  1392. for you and I,

1393. that we might know Him,

1394. that we might know His life,

  1395. that we might experience

  1396. His peace,

  1397. His freedom,

  1398. His joy.

  1399. Friends,

  1400. this Jesus Christ alone

1401. is worthy of our worship,

1402. indeed worthy of our very lives.

1403. Do not make an idol for yourself

1404. in the shape of anything,

  1405. in the heavens above,

  1406. the earth below,

1407. or in the waters below.

  1408. Turn to Jesus,

  1409. the one true God,

  1410. and find your hope

  1411. in Him.

  1412. Let's pray together.

  1413. Father,

  1414. oh Jesus,

  1415. we come before You

  1416. this morning

  1417. because You,

  1418. God,

  1419. have life

1420. because we so need You.

  1421. Father,

1422. just a few minutes ago,

  1423. we reflected

  1424. on the things

  1425. that we are tempted

1426. to hope and trust in.

  1427. the things

  1428. that promise us

  1429. security,

  1430. the things

  1431. that promise us

  1432. joy and peace.

  1433. Father,

  1434. we want to bring

  1435. those things

  1436. before You

  1437. this morning.

  1438. We want to

  1439. acknowledge them,

  1440. but we also

1441. want to repent of them.

  1442. We want to turn

  1443. from those things

  1444. and turn to You.

  1445. Father,

  1446. in my own life,

  1447. I am so aware

  1448. that people's approval

  1449. and what people

  1450. think of me

  1451. is often

  1452. the driving force

  1453. in my life.

  1454. God,

  1455. so often,

  1456. I love the glory

  1457. that comes from man

  1458. more than the glory

  1459. that comes from You.

  1460. I love the praise

  1461. and the affirmation

  1462. from people

  1463. more than the affirmation

  1464. that comes from You.

  1465. Father,

  1466. I acknowledge

  1467. that I feel

  1468. safe and secure

  1469. if I think people

  1470. are pleased with me

  1471. rather than knowing

  1472. my security

  1473. is in You.

  1474. Father,

  1475. in my life

1476. and in all of our lives,

  1477. there are deep-seated

  1478. things that we hope

  1479. and trust in.

  1480. Christ,

  1481. won't You come

  1482. and deliver us

  1483. from those things?

  1484. won't You come

  1485. and save us?

  1486. Won't You come

  1487. and set us free?

  1488. Father,

  1489. this morning,

  1490. we want to turn

  1491. from those things

  1492. and turn to You.

  1493. We confess

  1494. that sometimes

  1495. we don't even know

  1496. how to do it

1497. and so the first step,

  1498. God,

  1499. is to

  1500. confess

  1501. and repent.

  1502. Father,

  1503. forgive us.

  1504. Forgive us,

  1505. God.

  1506. Father,

  1507. we ask that You

  1508. don't just forgive us,

  1509. You also change us,

  1510. God.

  1511. You change us,

  1512. Lord.

  1513. God,

  1514. won't You make us

  1515. more like You?

1516. Won't the life of God,

  1517. the life of heaven

  1518. infuse our souls

  1519. and our bodies

  1520. and our hearts,

  1521. God.

  1522. God,

  1523. won't You break

  1524. the power

  1525. of sin and darkness

  1526. as we sang earlier,

  1527. break the power

  1528. of these idols

  1529. in our life

  1530. and set us free,

  1531. God.

  1532. Set us free.

  1533. God,

1534. I pray that for some of us,

  1535. even right now,

  1536. we'll experience

1537. a freedom in our life.

  1538. that,

  1539. God,

  1540. this afternoon,

  1541. we'll be a different person

  1542. to who we were

  1543. this morning

  1544. because that which

  1545. has controlled our life

  1546. will be set free,

  1547. God.

  1548. I pray,

  1549. Father,

  1550. for freedom.

  1551. God,

1552. as we turn from these things

  1553. to You,

  1554. God,

  1555. won't You change us?

  1556. God,

1557. come and bring freedom now,

  1558. Lord.

  1559. As we repent

1560. and turn from these things

  1561. and turn to You,

  1562. God,

1563. we pray for Your freedom.

1564. We pray for Your joy.

  1565. We pray,

  1566. God,

  1567. for anxiety

  1568. and despondency

  1569. to flee

  1570. and pray for joyness

  1571. and fullness of life

  1572. to come.

  1573. Christ,

1574. come and have Your way.

1575. Come and be our God.

  1576. God,

1577. come and be our real God,

  1578. not just in word,

1579. but reality in our hearts.

1580. Come and be our only God.

  1581. We pray.

  1582. We pray these things

  1583. in Your name.

  1584. Amen.
