  1. Father, we confess before you that sometimes your word just offends us, and we want to pretend that it doesn't, but it does.

  2. Sometimes, Father, your word makes us proud when it should really be humbling us.

  3. And sometimes, Father, your word just makes us feel bad when it's actually very, very good news.

  4. Father, we need the help of your Holy Spirit that we might understand your word correctly.

  5. So we ask that the Holy Spirit would move at a very deep level of who we are so that we might, Father, enter into your word,

  6. and your word might enter into us, and in light of the gospel, that we might be changed more and more and more into the new creation

  7. that we will eventually be in fullness and glory.

  8. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. So one of the things I do sometimes when I get into conversations with people about the Christian faith,

  11. they find out I'm a Christian, at some point in time I might ask them if they actually own a Bible,

  12. if they'd be interested in reading the Bible, and sometimes they say, no, I don't have a Bible.

  13. And I say, would you like it if I gave you a New Testament or a Gospel of John?

  14. And sometimes they say yes.

  15. And one of the things I like to do sometimes when I'm working on my sermon is I like to imagine what would happen

  16. if I discovered, let's say on Monday, that they actually had been reading the Bible by themselves,

  17. and they came to me.

  18. This actually did happen to me once about a year ago.

  19. They came to me and said, George, how come it says this?

  20. Like it was something about Jesus that said, I can't remember the text, but he said, this is really bloodthirsty.

  21. And he was a bit shocked, and we ended up having a bit of a conversation about it.

  22. So I don't know how many of you caught what Ken said when he was reading from Ephesians 4, verse 17 and following.

    Ephesians 4:17

  23. It'd be helpful if you get your Bibles out and look at it, Ephesians 4, 17 and following.

  24. But you can well imagine that if your non-Christian friends saw this, they might be a little bit bothered by it.

  25. And if you don't have your Bible, I'm just going to read it very, very quickly, just the first, the little hard bit,

  26. and then we'll talk about it.

  27. And here's how it goes.

  28. Note what it says.

  29. Now this I say and testify in the Lord.

  30. And in the original language, this is like a solemn declaration.

  31. The word say, in some contexts, could be also translated as I decree.

  32. Like if you were the emperor, I decree this.

  33. It's a solemn thing.

  34. It's not said flippantly.

  35. It's not like a put-down comment, snide, or anything like this.

  36. This is something very solemn.

  37. I solemnly say and testify in the Lord.

  38. Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do in the futility of their minds.

  39. Now just listen.

  40. By the way, one of the reasons that what we're doing here is this.

  41. One of the things which some of you know, I was just in Israel and I came back.

  42. And one of the great privileges of this tour that I was able to be on in Israel is that we got to meet different Israeli officials

  43. and also some ordinary people.

  44. For instance, we had the privilege of going to an Orthodox Jewish home and seeing how they celebrate the Shabbat,

  45. the beginning of the Sabbath.

  46. But one of the things I noticed time and time again when I was speaking to Israelis,

  47. especially around problems, is they said this particular phrase,

  48. you got to see the world as it is, roll up your sleeves, and deal with it.

  49. Like, isn't that good wisdom?

  50. See the world as it is, roll up your sleeves, and deal with it.

  51. Get down to it.

  52. And so it is with this text.

  53. It's very easy for us to quickly just go over it, hope that nobody really notices, not meditate upon it,

  54. but it's a very stark text.

  55. And so what we're going to do is we're walking towards the text.

  56. We're going to camp in the text for a good part of the sermon,

  57. just trying to understand what it says and what it's not saying.

  58. So I'll begin reading at verse 17 again.

  59. Now this I say in testifying the Lord.

  60. Remember, this is a solemn thing.

  61. It's to be read solemnly.

  62. That you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do.

  63. And Paul would be saying that anybody other than a Jewish person is a Gentile.

  64. And many Christians would just see it as this is describing non-Christians.

  65. I'm going to comment on that in a moment, but that's how they would be heard at least on one level.

  66. That you must no longer walk, verse 17, and as the Gentiles do in the futility of their minds.

  67. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God

  68. because of the ignorance that is in them due to their hardness of heart.

  69. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality,

  70. greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

  71. Now, aren't you glad you invited your non-Christian friend to church today?

  72. This would be such a good text for them to hear.

  73. It's a very, very powerful and stark text.

  74. We're going to walk towards this.

  75. Now, the first thing you need to understand before I start to unpack it is this.

  76. It sounds like it's an us versus them statement, but it's not.

  77. If you understand it as an us versus them statement, you're going to misunderstand it.

  78. What Paul is doing is he's describing the baseline of every human mind.

  79. He is describing the baseline of the human mind for every human mind.

  80. So the good news is this.

  81. He's not insulting non-Christians.

  82. He also is insulting everyone here in the room.

  83. He's insulting all of us.

  84. He's saying this is how the normal human mind works in these patterns.

  85. And many of you would say, George, that doesn't help us at all.

  86. It just doesn't, in fact, seem true.

  87. It seems way, way, way too extreme.

  88. So let's just look at some of these phrases and think about it for a second

  89. and see if we actually think it's as extreme and as bad as it sounds.

  90. Look at, we're not going to begin with futility.

  91. We're going to end with futility in verse 17.

  92. Let's look at the first phrase, they are darkened in their understanding.

  93. And the word understanding there could also, some of your words, your Bible,

  94. your Bibles have thoughts.

  95. But the best word actually, the most literal word is mindset.

  96. That there's something about the actual mind itself and the way it's set that is darkened.

  97. Now, let me just ask you some thought experiments.

  98. How many of you look at things in the paper or things that are going on in community

  99. and you say to yourself, how can they not see that that is wrong?

  100. Am I the only one?

  101. Everyone does it, right?

  102. How can they not see that that is wrong?

  103. And you know what?

  104. You can be absolutely guaranteed.

  105. I don't know what your political views are.

  106. I don't know what your views are on climate change.

  107. I don't know who you voted for.

  108. But I can guarantee whatever your view is, if it was published, there'd be a whole pile of Canadians

  109. who would say, how can they not see that that is wrong?

  110. Right?

  111. That's what we say about each other.

  112. How can they not see that that is wrong?

  113. And if you think about it for yourself, if you think back on your former way of thinking,

  114. I did a bit of a faux pas about a couple of months ago.

  115. There's a neighbor of mine who goes to my old church.

  116. And I started to talk about somebody that I thought was dead.

  117. Okay?

  118. And one of the things I talked about, I was just sharing.

  119. I was just smiling.

  120. He's dead.

  121. I can say this thing about the guy in the past.

  122. And this guy in the past, this was in 1985 when I was just ordained.

  123. And I remember him going on this long rant.

  124. He said, I work in the computer business and I can tell you this.

  125. No computer will ever be so portable and ever so fast and can handle so much information

  126. that it could ever be connected to a gun that would shoot down a missile.

  127. And he went on an hour-long rant about how stupid Reagan was

  128. and how stupid anybody was to think you'd ever have computers small enough, fast enough,

  129. powerful enough to shoot down a missile.

  130. And I just shared that with a chuckle.

  131. And then the guy told me he's still alive.

  132. And then he said with a smile, I really look forward to telling him this story.

  133. Because it will make him very uncomfortable.

  134. He was in the computer business, right?

  135. That's what he said.

  136. I'm in the computer business.

  137. I know no computer will ever get like that.

  138. Well, some of you are in the computer business.

  139. We don't make those types of claims because who knows what's going to happen.

  140. But here's the thing.

  141. Remember I said, all of Canada we say, how could they not see that that was wrong?

  142. But if you think about yourself, think if somebody was to remind you of something that you said

  143. or believed a year ago, five years ago, 20 years ago, now you might say to yourself,

  144. I don't know how I couldn't see that that was wrong.

  145. What are you describing?

  146. A darkened mind.

  147. A darkened mind.

  148. In fact, just think about it for a second.

  149. Imagine you meet somebody and they come up and they start gushing to you.

  150. Oh, you should meet this woman.

  151. You should meet this man.

  152. He's a teacher.

  153. And all of his teaching is light.

  154. He is completely and utterly enlightened.

  155. Everything he sees, he sees clearly.

  156. What will every single one of us think?

  157. Nut job and cult, right?

  158. What do we not believe?

  159. In a mind which is only light.

  160. I just proved it.

  161. So why are we bothered here?

  162. Let's look at the next one.

  163. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the

  164. ignorance that is in them due to their hardness of heart.

  165. So what that just said, if you unpack it, verse 18, we have a hard heart.

  166. And because of a hard heart, we have ignorance.

  167. And because of this ignorance that comes out of a hard heart, we're alienated from God and

  168. his life.

  169. Does that sound extreme?

  170. Well, let me ask you this thought experiment.

  171. Imagine in a couple of years, human beings are able to land on Mars.

  172. And so they land on Mars, a big enough ship and a group of a team of astronauts, men and

  173. women, they get out and they have maybe, first they just walk around a little bit, but they

  174. unload some type of a rover that can move on the surface of Mars.

  175. And they hop in and the cameras are going and they're talking and everybody, like billions

  176. of people on Earth will be fixated with this when the day happens, right?

  177. And so they go around a corner and they get to be able to look down a bit of a crevice,

  178. a valley, and on the bottom they see something that can travel on the surface of Mars.

  179. And they can see that there's lights coming out of it.

  180. It means it has power and it's turned on.

  181. Now, if they said that, all of Earth would be riveted.

  182. And then if they go down and they see that there's this thing that can travel on Mars

  183. and it has obviously power and it's turned on, but there's nobody in it.

  184. Like every single one of us, we'd be worried about aliens.

  185. Are they around the corner?

  186. Are they going to kill us?

  187. Are they going to eat us?

  188. Are they going to befriend us?

  189. It'd be all this thing.

  190. But imagine if a week afterwards NASA said, don't worry about it.

  191. That thing that we found, it happened by chance.

  192. We figured out that there were some explosions and some windstorms on Mars.

  193. And a result of that, you have a rover with power turned on.

  194. Who would believe them?

  195. Zero.

  196. Let me tell you.

  197. Let me tell you.

  198. The human cell is more complicated than that device and it got turned on by chance.

  199. Why do we think that one idea is absurd and the other is the thing you have to believe to enter into polite society?

  200. Try being a politician in Canada that says you think that a cell could not just happen by itself.

  201. What Scheer is going through about abortion would be nothing compared to how everybody would hound them.

  202. You think that's too extreme?

  203. Imagine a second story.

  204. Jenny comes in on a morning into the office and she finds me dead on the ground.

  205. And she calls, there's a pool of blood.

  206. She calls the police.

  207. They come.

  208. They discovered afterwards with an autopsy that somebody had broken my back and I was paralyzed.

  209. And then they stabbed me several times and I bled to death.

  210. But, before I died, with the blood that was pooling from my chest, I write on the side, Bob Jones murdered me last night in my blood.

  211. And I hope there's no Bob Jones here.

  212. I picked a name.

  213. Maybe I should have picked Frodo Baggins.

  214. I don't know.

  215. But then we'd know there's no Frodo Baggins.

  216. So, Bob Jones murdered me last night.

  217. And if in his defense, when the police go, they arrest Bob Jones, you know, and Bob Jones said, that blood, that writing, George didn't write it.

  218. It just happened by chance.

  219. It's just the way the blood flowed.

  220. Who would believe it?

  221. But that simple message, Bob Jones murdered me, you know, whatever the date, is vastly simpler than DNA.

  222. By a huge order of magnitude.

  223. And DNA is just information, chemically put together.

  224. Why is it that we think, that we would not believe that Bob Jones killed me this evening, that that couldn't happen by chance, that we believe DNA can happen by chance?

  225. Is it possible that what we have is a hardness of heart that leads to ignorance, that means that we will not want to know the true and living God?

  226. Is it possible, in fact, that when the Bible says here they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to their hardness of the heart, that we have hard hearts when it comes to God?

  227. And consider the next thing.

  228. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality.

  229. What does this mean here?

  230. Just think about this for a second.

  231. And I'm sure this has happened to everybody here.

  232. But if you have any friends, if you have brothers and sisters, if you have any family, in fact, if you're anybody other than somebody who's lived in a test tube and behind some veil and never met a human being,

  233. at some point in time, one of these moments will come to you, your wife or your friend or your child will come to you and say,

  234. five years ago you did this and it hurt me unbelievably badly.

  235. And you realize when you think about yourself.

  236. And they said, not only did it hurt me really badly what you did, it didn't seem to bother you at all.

  237. You just kept going on.

  238. You were so caught up with just doing your own thing, you never even noticed how deeply you hurt me.

  239. Every single one of us, if we haven't had that experience yet, just wait.

  240. We get so caught up in pursuing our own pleasure, what pleases us, we don't realize the damage we might have just done to an important relationship.

  241. What does that describe?

  242. That describes what the Bible just says here, isn't it?

  243. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality.

  244. And let's look at the last one.

  245. Greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

  246. Now, at the level of the original language, impurity here is not referring to sexual purity.

  247. It's referring to a relationship with God, the true and living God, the holy, good, only good, only loving, only truthful, only just, only merciful God.

  248. And it's describing something here about the flow, the flow of our lives, so to speak.

  249. Human beings aren't static, we're in motion.

  250. And we're moving along a current.

  251. And what is part of the current that describes every human being?

  252. Well, a bit of a thought experiment.

  253. And you might not agree with it, but I think you will if you think about it.

  254. All of a sudden, I said, I think it would be a great moral evil if you touched one of those bronze door opening things underneath that exit sign over there.

  255. And if I was to go on and on and on about how great a moral evil it would be and you should never do it, what would all of you want to do?

  256. Touch it.

  257. Touch it.

  258. So, you said, why?

  259. Because the fact of the matter is, is that within every single human being there is a flow.

  260. there is a flow to do things to say to God,

  261. you're not the boss of me.

  262. You're not the boss of me.

  263. You're only the boss of me to the extent that I allow you to be the boss of me.

  264. And that describes every human mind.

  265. So all of a sudden, you see,

  266. when we Christians are afraid of the word of God and run from it,

  267. we realize, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, one second.

  268. The Bible here is describing every human mind, including you and me.

  269. Including you and me.

  270. Now, what about that first phrase way back up in verse 17,

  271. which sort of launched all of this?

  272. Now I say this, and I have to watch my time.

  273. Now I say this, now this I say, verse 17,

  274. and testifying the Lord that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do

  275. in the futility of their minds.

  276. And I describe to you how what the Bible is doing here

  277. is it's describing the baseline of every human mind.

  278. It's not an us or them statement.

  279. The other thing you need to understand here is this,

  280. that the statement, and some of you who are theologically trained

  281. know that what we see here is the doctrine of total depravity, by the way.

  282. And what this doctrine is saying here,

  283. especially if you look at the rest of the Bible,

  284. is it's not saying absolute futility,

  285. but true futility.

  286. It's not describing minds as being completely and utterly broken.

  287. If that was the case, we couldn't have any communication.

  288. Paul couldn't write and we couldn't read.

  289. But it's saying that there's something in every human mind

  290. which is broken, that's bent,

  291. that doesn't work right.

  292. It would be as if you went hunting

  293. and you didn't realize that the rifle was just not actually straight,

  294. and every time you lined it up to shoot,

  295. it always kept missing.

  296. But you just never try to adopt.

  297. It's always just missing.

  298. Or maybe it's a rifle that every time,

  299. even when you adjust this.

  300. Anyway, I don't want to forget,

  301. the mind is bent.

  302. And so here it is with futility.

  303. And every single human being is touched by it.

  304. And part of the reason that this flow that I just described

  305. about wanting to show God that he's not the boss

  306. and why this flow doesn't completely and utterly unmake us

  307. is that the rest of the Bible teaches us

  308. that there's this thing called common grace,

  309. that God spares us from the full results of our decision

  310. to say to God,

  311. you are not my boss.

  312. I am the boss.

  313. Or this, the company is the boss.

  314. Or this ideology is the boss.

  315. Or money is the boss.

  316. Or my wife is the boss.

  317. Or my husband is the boss.

  318. Or my kids are the boss.

  319. And I'll only acknowledge your authority

  320. to the extent that I allow you

  321. after I serve these other types of things.

  322. And the fact that that doesn't completely and utterly unmake us

  323. is described in other parts in the Bible

  324. as the doctrine of common grace,

  325. that God restrains things that go on within us.

  326. But what about futile?

  327. Well, it's another topic of a conversation.

  328. But what this is implying here

  329. is that there is a true meaning to life.

  330. There's a true end to life.

  331. And the Bible is telling you very solemnly and truly

  332. that there actually is the possibility

  333. of real meaning to life.

  334. At Dig and Delve, I got asked,

  335. I got to do a presentation just last weekend

  336. on Friday night.

  337. It was on intelligent design and science

  338. and whether science is leading us more and more

  339. to believe that you have to have a designer

  340. to account for what they're discovering about reality.

  341. And I got to do one of the presentations,

  342. the opening presentation to set the stage.

  343. And they ended up inviting me to be on the panel.

  344. And one of the questions that came to me was,

  345. isn't it the case that lies

  346. sometimes lead you to the truth

  347. and that lies are important to knowing the truth?

  348. What do you think about that?

  349. And my response was,

  350. do you want me to lie or tell you the truth?

  351. And I mention this because it's sort of important,

  352. is that what the Bible is saying here,

  353. and it's beyond the scope of my sermon,

  354. is that there really is meaning to life.

  355. It's not just self-declared,

  356. because there really is a God that does exist,

  357. who has created us as human beings for a purpose,

  358. and our chief end,

  359. the true meaning of our life,

  360. is to know God and enjoy him forever

  361. and bring him glory.

  362. We were made for this.

  363. What about futility?

  364. Here's the thought experiment.

  365. Imagine in the spring,

  366. you go up into the Ottawa Valley somewhere,

  367. and you go to a river where it's dammed,

  368. and if you know anything about dams,

  369. sometimes the dams have runoff areas off to the side.

  370. And you go, and you go the day before,

  371. and you see that there's people camping there.

  372. And you say to them,

  373. tomorrow at this time,

  374. they're going to open some floodgates

  375. because of the waters rising,

  376. there's going to be a runoff here,

  377. and if you don't get out of this place,

  378. you're going to drown.

  379. The water will come through with a great torrent,

  380. and will overwhelm you.

  381. But in the meantime,

  382. between now and then,

  383. they don't listen,

  384. they don't acknowledge.

  385. In fact, what happens is,

  386. one of them designs an app

  387. that if it ever got released,

  388. would make a million dollars,

  389. a five million dollars,

  390. ten million dollars,

  391. lots of money.

  392. Another person designs a poet,

  393. a poem,

  394. that if in fact you were able to show the poem,

  395. it would end up being something

  396. that would end up being put in school textbooks.

  397. It's so brilliant.

  398. Another person designs a dance.

  399. Another person designs some new camping equipment.

  400. Another person solves a problem on their computer,

  401. a mathematical equation,

  402. that had never been solved.

  403. They do all of these things,

  404. and then the next day,

  405. the water comes,

  406. but they don't actually leave,

  407. and the water comes and kills them all.

  408. Now, they've been absolutely brilliant.

  409. They've been creative in dance,

  410. in art,

  411. in technology,

  412. in math,

  413. and all of those things,

  414. but what would you say about their thinking?

  415. It was futile.

  416. It was futile.

  417. They all died.

  418. They just died.

  419. It was futile.

  420. And in fact,

  421. it might be that there was somebody in the room

  422. who was fairly average IQ

  423. with their Down syndrome kid,

  424. but they took the warning

  425. and got up out of the thing,

  426. and they're not as high an IQ,

  427. but what would you say about their thinking?

  428. It wasn't futile.

  429. They're still alive.

  430. They heard it,

  431. and that's what the Bible is saying here.

  432. You see,

  433. if you look at it,

  434. the Bible is describing

  435. the possibility of real meaning,

  436. and the Bible's description is true.

  437. And here's the thing.

  438. Why is it to read this

  439. and hear that it's true?

  440. Why does it depress people?

  441. Why does it depress people?

  442. Why does it depress people?

  443. You see,

  444. like,

  445. part of the thing is

  446. that the fact that it depresses us

  447. both says something about our pride,

  448. but it also says something about our longings.

  449. Our pride says

  450. we don't want to acknowledge

  451. that there's darkness or callousness

  452. or impurity within us,

  453. but it also,

  454. at the same time that it reveals our pride,

  455. it also reveals something about our longings,

  456. that surely our minds

  457. are meant for more than this.

  458. Surely our minds are meant

  459. to be healthy

  460. and responsive

  461. and filled with light

  462. and longing for light

  463. and pure.

  464. that this text

  465. opens something

  466. about our longings

  467. and our pride.

  468. So what does the Bible say about this?

  469. Let's look what Paul moves to

  470. very next.

  471. That's verses 20 to 24.

  472. And by the way,

  473. as you turn to this in the Bible,

  474. here's a little bit of a geek moment,

  475. okay?

  476. Those of you who are geeks,

  477. timeout,

  478. geek timeout moment,

  479. okay?

  480. Okay,

  481. you can go to,

  482. those who aren't geeks,

  483. you can go to sleep

  484. for about a minute.

  485. I'll tell the geeks

  486. this geek moment.

  487. The way that this letter

  488. is structured

  489. is very,

  490. very interesting.

  491. Verses 17 to 24

  492. basically sets up

  493. the framework

  494. to understand

  495. all moral

  496. and spiritual exhortation

  497. that makes up

  498. the rest of the letter.

  499. From verse 25

  500. to the end of chapter 6,

  501. Paul is going to talk

  502. about forgiveness,

  503. language,

  504. spiritual things,

  505. marriage,

  506. relationships,

  507. parents and children.

  508. And in a sense,

  509. if you were going to try

  510. to organize it,

  511. you could say

  512. that over here

  513. there's this basic framework

  514. and then he gives

  515. a whole pile of,

  516. for instance,

  517. that flow from it.

  518. And so in a sense,

  519. every time you looked

  520. at any moral thing,

  521. spiritual warfare,

  522. anything,

  523. you could say,

  524. okay,

  525. let's go back to this.

  526. This is the framework

  527. to understand it.

  528. Ah,

  529. here's a,

  530. for instance,

  531. end of geek moment,

  532. back to the text.

  533. So what does Paul do?

  534. Let's look at what he does.

  535. And at first,

  536. it's going to seem like

  537. it's not very much.

  538. But that's because often

  539. we don't think

  540. the gospel is very much.

  541. You see,

  542. because we are addicted

  543. to the type of

  544. immoral advice

  545. that says,

  546. try harder,

  547. improve your education.

  548. If you just know the truth,

  549. you'll do the right thing.

  550. If you just get

  551. a better willpower

  552. and you try harder,

  553. that that will be good.

  554. Where our other type

  555. of moral advice

  556. will be,

  557. you know,

  558. to appeal to our pride.

  559. Like,

  560. just think how bad

  561. people will think of you

  562. if you don't do this.

  563. Or the other thing

  564. that we'll do is,

  565. well,

  566. our moral improvement

  567. and moral exhortation

  568. often comes around

  569. to a type of bribery.

  570. If you give to people,

  571. if you give more money

  572. to the church,

  573. you'll feel better.

  574. So give more money

  575. to the church,

  576. you'll feel better.

  577. It's appealing

  578. to your own self-interest.

  579. And often,

  580. we're so used to

  581. thinking about it

  582. in those types of terms

  583. where if you can't make it,

  584. fake it.

  585. Like,

  586. you know,

  587. we're used to those

  588. types of things

  589. and when we actually see

  590. what the Bible speaks

  591. in light of the profound insight

  592. into how we actually function,

  593. we're disappointed at first.

  594. But it's wisdom.

  595. Listen to what it says.

  596. Verse 20.

  597. But this is not,

  598. but that is not the way

  599. you learned Christ.

  600. Assuming that you have heard

  601. about him

  602. and were taught in him

  603. as the truth

  604. is in Jesus.

  605. To put off

  606. your old self

  607. which belongs

  608. to your former

  609. manner of life

  610. and is corrupt

  611. through deceitful desires

  612. and to be renewed

  613. in the spirit

  614. of your minds

  615. and to put on

  616. the new self

  617. created after

  618. the likeness of God

  619. in true righteousness

  620. and holiness.

  621. So what's Paul

  622. saying here?

  623. What's going on?

  624. Early on

  625. in the book of Ephesians

  626. in chapter 2

  627. Paul uses

  628. a very, very

  629. graphic image

  630. to describe

  631. what conversion is

  632. and what it means

  633. to become a Christian.

  634. He says in a sense

  635. you want to understand

  636. what the gospel is

  637. and how you become

  638. a Christian

  639. go to a funeral home

  640. and if you go to

  641. a funeral home

  642. you find dead bodies

  643. and what you have

  644. to understand

  645. is that apart from Christ

  646. you're like a dead body.

  647. How good

  648. are dead bodies

  649. at seeking God?

  650. Well, dead bodies

  651. can't do anything

  652. they're dead.

  653. So how do you understand

  654. how conversion works?

  655. What you have to understand

  656. in conversion

  657. is that God calls you

  658. and not only

  659. does God choose you

  660. and call you

  661. but God gives you

  662. the power

  663. to make you alive

  664. to respond

  665. to his call

  666. and as you respond

  667. to it

  668. he makes you

  669. fully alive.

  670. You have the power

  671. to respond to God

  672. the same

  673. as a dead body

  674. has the power

  675. to run a marathon.

  676. None.

  677. You are completely

  678. and utterly

  679. dependent upon God.

  680. Paul uses

  681. a similar type

  682. of analogy

  683. here with us.

  684. He's just described

  685. how our minds

  686. don't work

  687. at least not

  688. in terms of

  689. any ultimate sense.

  690. There's something

  691. just bent

  692. and broken with them.

  693. And so he said

  694. here's the power

  695. it's very similar

  696. if you go back

  697. later on

  698. look at 2 Corinthians 4

    2 Corinthians 4:1–6

  699. verses 1 to 6

  700. it's a very similar

  701. type of thing

  702. and this is how

  703. the image goes.

  704. Look again

  705. at verse 20

  706. but that is not

  707. the way you learned

  708. Christ

  709. assuming that you

  710. heard about him

  711. and were taught

  712. in him

  713. as the truth

  714. is in Jesus.

  715. And this is

  716. one of those phrases

  717. that in English

  718. is very, very,

  719. very, very dense.

  720. It's really like

  721. you know how

  722. if a kid draws you

  723. a picture

  724. it's full of scribbles

  725. and it looks just cute

  726. because it's a kid

  727. but most of the lines

  728. don't really matter

  729. and they don't really

  730. illustrate anything.

  731. This is more like

  732. some of those

  733. like Chinese

  734. and Buddhist drawings

  735. where there's just

  736. a very small number

  737. of lines

  738. but every line

  739. is very, very important

  740. because there's

  741. just a few of them

  742. and it shows

  743. the real skill

  744. of the artist

  745. and that's what

  746. Paul is doing here.

  747. What he's doing here

  748. is he's saying

  749. is this

  750. George

  751. I have just described

  752. your mind

  753. and one day

  754. in the midst

  755. of your mind

  756. being the way

  757. your mind

  758. is

  759. the message

  760. of Christ

  761. came

  762. not what was

  763. this message

  764. of Christ

  765. this message

  766. of Christ

  767. is that God

  768. saw George

  769. your unbelievable

  770. need

  771. and your inability

  772. to unbend

  773. your mind

  774. and fix yourself

  775. he saw

  776. the direction

  777. and flow

  778. of your heart

  779. and your inability

  780. to fix that yourself

  781. he saw you

  782. in your weakness

  783. he saw you

  784. at your worst

  785. and God's response

  786. to that

  787. is love

  788. he loves you

  789. and so

  790. Jesus comes

  791. and lives

  792. the life

  793. that you could

  794. never live

  795. he dies a death

  796. in your place

  797. he rises

  798. from the dead

  799. he defeats

  800. that which keeps

  801. you separated

  802. from me

  803. burying it

  804. in his person

  805. he defeats

  806. death

  807. his perfect light

  808. all of

  809. what is going

  810. to be now

  811. described

  812. you hear this

  813. message

  814. and this

  815. message

  816. pierces

  817. your darkened

  818. mind

  819. not because

  820. of the power

  821. of my

  822. not because

  823. my mind

  824. is somehow

  825. special

  826. that I have

  827. an IQ

  828. that you

  829. don't

  830. I have

  831. an aptitude

  832. that you

  833. don't

  834. know

  835. the power

  836. comes from

  837. the proclamation

  838. of Jesus

  839. Christ

  840. as Savior

  841. and Lord

  842. which is

  843. humbly

  844. shared

  845. in my case

  846. by an ex-drug

  847. addict

  848. who shared

  849. that with me

  850. in a way

  851. that pierced

  852. me

  853. pierced

  854. me

  855. and that

  856. message

  857. comes to

  858. our darkened

  859. mind

  860. and what

  861. happens

  862. I

  863. my

  864. I'm

  865. I respond

  866. with yes

  867. and he

  868. becomes my

  869. Savior and

  870. Lord

  871. and how

  872. can you

  873. describe

  874. what has

  875. just now

  876. happened

  877. when I

  878. in my

  879. darkened

  880. mind

  881. have heard

  882. the gospel

  883. and it

  884. pierces

  885. me

  886. not by

  887. my

  888. power

  889. but by

  890. the power

  891. of the

  892. gospel

  893. the love

  894. the power

  895. of love

  896. the power

  897. of mercy

  898. the power

  899. of grace

  900. the power

  901. of goodness

  902. and it

  903. pierces me

  904. and how

  905. can I

  906. understand

  907. what

  908. happens

  909. well

  910. the Bible

  911. says

  912. George

  913. here's

  914. how

  915. you

  916. can

  917. understand

  918. what

  919. just

  920. happened

  921. the light

  922. of the gospel

  923. comes in

  924. and Jesus

  925. takes

  926. your old

  927. existence

  928. in Adam

  929. and he

  930. takes it

  931. off

  932. puts it

  933. away

  934. he said

  935. your old

  936. existence

  937. as Adam

  938. I paid

  939. for that

  940. on the

  941. cross

  942. and then

  943. you move

  944. to the

  945. third

  946. image

  947. and George

  948. there's

  949. you

  950. you're

  951. naked

  952. you're

  953. shivering

  954. you're

  955. pitiable

  956. I put

  957. on

  958. this new

  959. life

  960. this new

  961. life

  962. that is

  963. eternal

  964. that begins

  965. to

  966. you begin

  967. to experience

  968. eternity

  969. now

  970. but it's

  971. it's a

  972. new

  973. it's a

  974. new

  975. putting

  976. on

  977. that's

  978. my

  979. perfect

  980. fulfillment

  981. of life

  982. my perfect

  983. relationship

  984. with the

  985. father

  986. that now

  987. stands

  988. for you

  989. I died

  990. for the

  991. old

  992. thing

  993. that came

  994. on me

  995. that's

  996. why it's

  997. off of

  998. you

  999. and what

  1000. you now

  1001. have is

  1002. my standing

  1003. before God

  1004. and I put

  1005. that on

  1006. you

  1007. and my

  1008. standing

  1009. before you

  1010. and this

  1011. new

  1012. clothing

  1013. is preparing

  1014. you to

  1015. live the way

  1016. that I always

  1017. designed creation

  1018. to live

  1019. and is preparing

  1020. you for the

  1021. new heaven

  1022. and the new

  1023. earth

  1024. and I put

  1025. that on

  1026. you

  1027. I put

  1028. that on

  1029. your mind

  1030. and the

  1031. in between

  1032. thing

  1033. is it's

  1034. not just

  1035. that I

  1036. took

  1037. this off

  1038. and I put

  1039. this on

  1040. and then

  1041. off I

  1042. go and

  1043. do some

  1044. more fun

  1045. things

  1046. no

  1047. the very

  1048. very center

  1049. of who

  1050. you are

  1051. the very

  1052. center

  1053. of your

  1054. spirit

  1055. the center

  1056. of your

  1057. mind

  1058. there's

  1059. now like

  1060. an IV

  1061. and my

  1062. life

  1063. and my

  1064. wisdom

  1065. and my

  1066. mind

  1067. is coming

  1068. into you

  1069. every day

  1070. until you

  1071. die

  1072. and see

  1073. me face

  1074. to face

  1075. or I

  1076. come again

  1077. and you

  1078. see me

  1079. face

  1080. to face

  1081. and then

  1082. there is

  1083. no need

  1084. for an

  1085. IV

  1086. because you

  1087. become

  1088. a beautiful

  1089. cup

  1090. that I

  1091. will fill

  1092. with my

  1093. love

  1094. and my

  1095. life

  1096. and my

  1097. truth

  1098. and my

  1099. goodness

  1100. and my

  1101. justice

  1102. for all

  1103. eternity

  1104. and it will

  1105. always be new

  1106. and it will be

  1107. always fresh

  1108. and it will never

  1109. come to an

  1110. end and that

  1111. is your

  1112. destiny

  1113. now in

  1114. Christ

  1115. that's the

  1116. image

  1117. so how does

  1118. this help us

  1119. in the

  1120. moral

  1121. life

  1122. you see

  1123. here's the

  1124. thing

  1125. look again

  1126. at verse

  1127. verse 24

  1128. created

  1129. and put on

  1130. the new

  1131. self

  1132. created

  1133. after the

  1134. likeness of

  1135. God

  1136. and true

  1137. righteousness

  1138. and holiness

  1139. from our

  1140. point of

  1141. view

  1142. I become

  1143. converted

  1144. from God's

  1145. point of

  1146. view

  1147. he creates

  1148. me

  1149. and you

  1150. and new

  1151. a new

  1152. creation

  1153. I've used

  1154. up my

  1155. time

  1156. how does

  1157. this

  1158. matter

  1159. how does

  1160. this help

  1161. us

  1162. here's how

  1163. it helps

  1164. us

  1165. when I

  1166. look within

  1167. my life

  1168. and I

  1169. think about

  1170. whether I'm

  1171. doing bad

  1172. things or

  1173. whether I'm

  1174. doing good

  1175. things

  1176. sometimes I

  1177. think there is

  1178. good fruit in

  1179. my life

  1180. I'm not as

  1181. snarky as I

  1182. used to be

  1183. I think I

  1184. don't get

  1185. angry as

  1186. quickly as

  1187. I used

  1188. to and

  1189. I'm not

  1190. going to

  1191. start going

  1192. through all

  1193. my vices

  1194. by the way

  1195. okay you

  1196. know those

  1197. things that

  1198. George you

  1199. still got a

  1200. lot of

  1201. work to

  1202. do in

  1203. this and

  1204. this and

  1205. this and

  1206. this but

  1207. here's the

  1208. thing when

  1209. I look

  1210. within

  1211. what happens

  1212. is this

  1213. I either

  1214. get filled

  1215. with pride

  1216. because I

  1217. imagine that

  1218. there's lots

  1219. of good

  1220. fruit or I

  1221. get filled

  1222. with despair

  1223. because there's

  1224. not much

  1225. good fruit

  1226. or I

  1227. pretend

  1228. and deny

  1229. as if there

  1230. is lots of

  1231. good fruit

  1232. when everybody

  1233. around me

  1234. knows that

  1235. there isn't

  1236. see what

  1237. happens to

  1238. human beings

  1239. is this

  1240. it's all

  1241. part of

  1242. how our

  1243. minds are

  1244. bent

  1245. having good

  1246. things that

  1247. we accomplish

  1248. becomes my

  1249. hope

  1250. my identity

  1251. my fuel

  1252. but here's

  1253. the problem

  1254. I and

  1255. you and I

  1256. will never

  1257. have enough

  1258. good fruit

  1259. in your life

  1260. to silence

  1261. your conscience

  1262. or the

  1263. devil

  1264. or the

  1265. world

  1266. isn't that

  1267. true

  1268. unless all

  1269. you do

  1270. is pretend

  1271. deny and

  1272. pretend

  1273. deny and

  1274. pretend

  1275. deny and

  1276. pretend

  1277. and everybody

  1278. else is

  1279. holding their

  1280. nose like

  1281. this when

  1282. they're around

  1283. you

  1284. but you're

  1285. denying and

  1286. pretending

  1287. denying and

  1288. pretending

  1289. but when I

  1290. look into

  1291. my life

  1292. and I

  1293. want to

  1294. have the

  1295. good

  1296. accomplishments

  1297. I want to

  1298. have the

  1299. good fruit

  1300. and my

  1301. hope is

  1302. built on

  1303. that

  1304. my identity

  1305. is based

  1306. on that

  1307. my fuel

  1308. to do

  1309. other good

  1310. things

  1311. is built

  1312. on that

  1313. but the

  1314. fact of

  1315. the matter

  1316. is that

  1317. my good

  1318. fruit

  1319. there's

  1320. never

  1321. enough

  1322. to silence

  1323. my conscience

  1324. to silence

  1325. the devil

  1326. and to

  1327. silence

  1328. the world

  1329. what am I

  1330. to do

  1331. what happens

  1332. every time

  1333. we do

  1334. communion

  1335. Jesus is

  1336. about to

  1337. go to

  1338. the cross

  1339. and his

  1340. disciples

  1341. and his

  1342. 20,000

  1343. foot

  1344. in the

  1345. air

  1346. understanding

  1347. of what's

  1348. about to

  1349. happen

  1350. and he

  1351. gives them

  1352. a very

  1353. simple

  1354. habit

  1355. and discipline

  1356. to help

  1357. them learn

  1358. how to

  1359. live

  1360. their life

  1361. in light

  1362. of what

  1363. he's about

  1364. to accomplish

  1365. and what

  1366. does he

  1367. say

  1368. my body

  1369. given for

  1370. you do

  1371. this

  1372. in

  1373. remembrance

  1374. of me

  1375. the blood

  1376. of a new

  1377. covenant

  1378. a new

  1379. way of

  1380. relating

  1381. that I

  1382. have

  1383. established

  1384. it can

  1385. be for

  1386. you

  1387. this is

  1388. the blood

  1389. of the

  1390. new

  1391. covenant

  1392. do this

  1393. in

  1394. remembrance

  1395. of me

  1396. every morning

  1397. I wake

  1398. up and I

  1399. can choose

  1400. to forget

  1401. I can

  1402. just act

  1403. as if

  1404. nothing

  1405. has ever

  1406. happened

  1407. of importance

  1408. in my

  1409. life

  1410. and what

  1411. happens

  1412. is I

  1413. walk

  1414. out of

  1415. the baseline

  1416. of my

  1417. mind

  1418. but what

  1419. do I

  1420. do

  1421. as a

  1422. human

  1423. being

  1424. I'm

  1425. trying to

  1426. deal

  1427. with moral

  1428. things

  1429. I'm

  1430. trying to

  1431. deal

  1432. with

  1433. the

  1434. end

  1435. of the

  1436. day

  1437. it's

  1438. not

  1439. just

  1440. that

  1441. the

  1442. gospel

  1443. I

  1444. put

  1445. my

  1446. faith

  1447. in

  1448. Jesus

  1449. to

  1450. save

  1451. me

  1452. I

  1453. need

  1454. to

  1455. put

  1456. my

  1457. faith

  1458. in

  1459. the

  1460. gospel

  1461. every

  1462. day

  1463. to

  1464. live

  1465. I

  1466. cannot

  1467. say

  1468. to you

  1469. that

  1470. Christ

  1471. has

  1472. put

  1473. off

  1474. the

  1475. old

  1476. self

  1477. and

  1478. put

  1479. on

  1480. the

  1481. new

  1482. self

  1483. and

  1484. that

  1485. I

  1486. am

  1487. being

  1488. renewed

  1489. every

  1490. day

  1491. by

  1492. the

  1493. Holy

  1494. Spirit

  1495. and

  1496. by

  1497. God's

  1498. word

  1499. on

  1500. the

  1501. basis

  1502. of

  1503. the

  1504. fruit

  1505. of

  1506. my

  1507. accomplishments

  1508. if

  1509. I

  1510. try

  1511. to

  1512. tell

  1513. you

  1514. that

  1515. and

  1516. if

  1517. I

  1518. believe

  1519. that

  1520. for

  1521. myself

  1522. I

  1523. will

  1524. be

  1525. crushed

  1526. I

  1527. will

  1528. die

  1529. I

  1530. cannot

  1531. do

  1532. that

  1533. it

  1534. does

  1535. not

  1536. work

  1537. it

  1538. doesn't

  1539. work

  1540. for

  1541. you

  1542. I

  1543. believe

  1544. that

  1545. Christ

  1546. made

  1547. me

  1548. right

  1549. with

  1550. him

  1551. and

  1552. I

  1553. need

  1554. to

  1555. hear

  1556. that

  1557. gospel

  1558. over

  1559. and

  1560. over

  1561. and

  1562. over

  1563. again

  1564. I

  1565. can

  1566. say

  1567. to

  1568. the

  1569. Lord

  1570. Lord

  1571. my

  1572. fruit

  1573. is

  1574. not

  1575. showing

  1576. that

  1577. the

  1578. old

  1579. self

  1580. is

  1581. gone

  1582. you

  1583. have

  1584. clothed

  1585. me

  1586. with

  1587. a

  1588. new

  1589. one

  1590. and

  1591. I

  1592. have

  1593. been

  1594. renewed

  1595. by

  1596. your

  1597. Holy

  1598. Spirit

  1599. but

  1600. I

  1601. believe

  1602. in

  1603. Jesus

  1604. I

  1605. believe

  1606. he

  1607. died

  1608. on

  1609. the

  1610. cross

  1611. I

  1612. believe

  1613. he

  1614. rose

  1615. I

  1616. believe

  1617. he

  1618. came

  1619. and

  1620. gave

  1621. me

  1622. life

  1623. I

  1624. believe

  1625. his

  1626. light

  1627. came

  1628. into

  1629. who

  1630. I

  1631. am

  1632. I

  1633. believe

  1634. that

  1635. that

  1636. is

  1637. true

  1638. I

  1639. believe

  1640. I

  1641. have

  1642. an

  1643. old

  1644. self

  1645. and

  1646. a

  1647. new

  1648. I

  1649. believe

  1650. that

  1651. that

  1652. is

  1653. true

  1654. I

  1655. need

  1656. to

  1657. hear

  1658. the

  1659. gospel

  1660. what

  1661. happens

  1662. when we

  1663. start

  1664. to

  1665. believe

  1666. the

  1667. gospel

  1668. and

  1669. with

  1670. gospel

  1671. comes

  1672. more

  1673. and

  1674. more

  1675. real

  1676. to

  1677. us

  1678. as

  1679. we

  1680. remind

  1681. ourselves

  1682. of

  1683. it

  1684. as

  1685. we

  1686. preach

  1687. the

  1688. bible

  1689. about

  1690. it

  1691. and

  1692. as

  1693. we

  1694. understand

  1695. that

  1696. it's

  1697. Christ

  1698. who

  1699. takes

  1700. away

  1701. my

  1702. old

  1703. self

  1704. that

  1705. it's

  1706. Christ

  1707. who

  1708. gives

  1709. me

  1710. the

  1711. new

  1712. self

  1713. that

  1714. it's

  1715. Christ

  1716. who

  1717. gives

  1718. me

  1719. the

  1720. Holy

  1721. Spirit

  1722. that

  1723. comes

  1724. into

  1725. my

  1726. whole

  1727. myself

  1728. there's

  1729. two

  1730. things

  1731. that

  1732. come

  1733. the

  1734. first

  1735. thing

  1736. is

  1737. I

  1738. can

  1739. look

  1740. at

  1741. my

  1742. life

  1743. and

  1744. my

  1745. day

  1746. and

  1747. I

  1748. can

  1749. see

  1750. the

  1751. world

  1752. as

  1753. it

  1754. is

  1755. and

  1756. I

  1757. have

  1758. a

  1759. security

  1760. and

  1761. a

  1762. hope

  1763. to

  1764. roll

  1765. up

  1766. my

  1767. sleeves

  1768. and

  1769. in

  1770. the

  1771. power

  1772. of

  1773. Christ

  1774. to

  1775. deal

  1776. with

  1777. it

  1778. amen

  1779. remembering

  1780. the

  1781. gospel

  1782. can

  1783. roll

  1784. up

  1785. my

  1786. sleeves

  1787. see

  1788. the

  1789. world

  1790. as

  1791. it

  1792. is

  1793. and

  1794. say

  1795. Jesus

  1796. help

  1797. me

  1798. to

  1799. deal

  1800. with

  1801. it

  1802. the

  1803. other

  1804. thing

  1805. that

  1806. happens

  1807. as

  1808. the

  1809. gospel

  1810. becomes

  1811. more

  1812. real

  1813. to

  1814. our

  1815. hearts

  1816. and

  1817. to

  1818. our

  1819. minds

  1820. is

  1821. that

  1822. we

  1823. can

  1824. work

  1825. out

  1826. a

  1827. gratitude

  1828. a

  1829. security

  1830. that

  1831. comes

  1832. in

  1833. our

  1834. identity

  1835. in

  1836. Jesus

  1837. a

  1838. gospel

  1839. based

  1840. identity

  1841. that

  1842. we

  1843. can

  1844. work

  1845. out

  1846. of

  1847. gratitude

  1848. that

  1849. means

  1850. I

  1851. don't

  1852. have

  1853. to

  1854. deny

  1855. I

  1856. don't

  1857. have

  1858. to

  1859. pretend

  1860. I

  1861. don't

  1862. have

  1863. to

  1864. be

  1865. proud

  1866. of

  1867. my

  1868. accomplishments

  1869. why

  1870. Jesus

  1871. pierced

  1872. the

  1873. gospel

  1874. pierced

  1875. my

  1876. darkened

  1877. mind

  1878. and

  1879. when

  1880. the

  1881. Holy

  1882. Spirit

  1883. helped

  1884. me

  1885. to

  1886. say

  1887. yes

  1888. Christ

  1889. took

  1890. off

  1891. my

  1892. old

  1893. self

  1894. Christ

  1895. puts

  1896. on

  1897. the

  1898. new

  1899. self

  1900. Christ

  1901. renews

  1902. me

  1903. day

  1904. by

  1905. day

  1906. all

  1907. praise

  1908. and

  1909. glory

  1910. to

  1911. him

  2115. that

  2116. you

  2117. work

  2118. within

  2119. us

  2120. that

  2121. we

  2122. might

  2138. upon

  2139. us

  2140. as

  2141. individuals

  2142. as

  2143. friends

  2144. as

  2146. as

  2147. families

  2148. as

  2149. a

  2150. congregation

  2151. that

  2152. we

  2153. might

  2154. remind

  2155. each

  2156. other

  2157. the

  2158. gospel

  2159. and

  2160. be

  2161. reminded

  2162. of

  2163. the

  2164. gospel

  2165. and

  2166. that

  2167. we

  2168. see

  2169. ourselves

  2170. in

  2171. the

  2172. world

  2173. and

  2174. that

  2175. which

  2176. draws

  2177. us

  2178. forward

  2179. to

  2180. live

  2181. in

  2182. a

  2183. way
