  1. The scripture reading comes from Deuteronomy chapter 5. Please follow along on the screen.

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  2. And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them,

  3. Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today,

  4. and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.

  5. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

  6. You shall have no other gods before me.

  7. You shall not make for yourself a carved image,

  8. or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,

  9. or that is on the earth beneath,

  10. or that is in the water under the earth.

  11. You shall not bow down to them or serve them.

  12. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,

  13. visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children

  14. to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

  15. but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

  16. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,

  17. for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

  18. Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy,

  19. and the Lord your God commanded you.

  20. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

  21. but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  22. On it you shall not do any work,

  23. you or your son or your daughter

  24. or your male servant or your female servant,

  25. or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock,

  26. or the sojourner who is within your gates,

  27. that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.

  28. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt,

  29. and the Lord your God brought you off from there

  30. with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.

  31. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

  32. Honor your father and your mother,

  33. and the Lord your God commanded you,

  34. that your days may be long,

  35. and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

  36. You shall not murder,

  37. and you shall not commit adultery,

  38. and you shall not steal,

  39. and you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor,

  40. and you shall not covet your neighbor's wife,

  41. and you shall not desire your neighbor's house,

  42. his field,

  43. or his male servant,

  44. or his female servant,

  45. his ox,

  46. or his donkey,

  47. or anything that is your neighbor's.

  48. This is the word of God.

  49. Great. Thank you, Christina.

  50. Many of us know the importance of a name.

  51. There are many families in Watermark that are looking forward to the arrival of their first child,

  52. and you can be sure that many of those families at the moment are spending countless evenings on websites,

  53. researching names,

  54. how certain names go well with other names,

  55. which names can possibly be teased when their kids grow up and go to school.

  56. Finding names for your children is not an easy business.

  57. For those of you who maybe have to find an English name as well as a Chinese name,

  58. you've got double the work cut out for you.

  59. And then, of course,

  60. we've got to find out how our names will go with their siblings' names.

  61. Will they rhyme?

  62. They want something similar,

  63. but not too similar.

  64. Finding names for our children is complicated business.

  65. For those of us that are parents and are picking names,

  66. on the one hand,

  67. you could go for something really simple and straightforward,

  68. something uncomplicated,

  69. like Kevin Murphy.

  70. For me,

  71. when my parents were picking my names,

  72. they wanted no complicated middle names,

  73. no embarrassing names,

  74. nothing too long.

  75. My dad didn't want to write too many letters on school application forms,

  76. so he chose Simon Murphy for my brother,

  77. Kevin Murphy,

  78. Andrew Murphy.

  79. That's all there is to it.

  80. On the other hand,

  81. some people really want to honor their parents,

  82. and their generations,

  83. and their uncles,

  84. and their aunts,

  85. and their grandparents,

  86. and their great-grandparents.

  87. And so you might have a family name

  88. that gets passed down from generation to generation to generation.

  89. But then you've got the tricky business of

  90. what happens if you don't really like the family name that's being passed down?

  91. Are you going to be the one person to break the seventh generation of family names?

  92. It's all very complicated business.

  93. You could do what Elon Musk did.

  94. He and his girlfriend recently had a child,

  95. and named their son

  96. X-Ash-A12 Musk.

  97. Who knows what it means?

  98. But all of this shows that names,

  99. and picking the right names for our children,

  100. is complicated business.

  101. And part of what makes it complicated

  102. is that we realize the importance

  103. and the significance of names.

  104. Names are so much more than just describing somebody,

  105. or calling somebody's attention.

  106. It's more than just showing,

  107. or describing that person over there,

  108. as opposed to this person over here.

  109. Names carry significance.

  110. They carry meaning.

  111. Names signify relationship.

  112. I remember when Claire and I were trying to find names for our girls,

  113. when Claire was pregnant with them,

  114. and she would often throw out,

  115. what about this name?

  116. And I would say,

  117. oh no, I went to school with somebody with that name.

  118. I could never name my children that name.

  119. Why?

  120. Because names aren't just sounds.

  121. We attach relationship,

  122. and meaning,

  123. and significance to them.

  124. This morning,

  125. we are continuing looking at this body of teaching

  126. in the Old Testament.

  127. This famous body of teaching

  128. that's come to be known as the Ten Commandments.

  129. Ten words for abundant life.

  130. And these words God gave to His people

  131. as they transitioned out of Egypt

  132. and went into the Promised Land.

  133. And they are words that God gives to His people

  134. to remind them of His faithfulness and His goodness,

  135. and to call them to trust Him and obedience

  136. as they continue on their journey as the people of God.

  137. And today,

  138. we are looking at the third one of these commands,

  139. and it goes like this.

  140. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,

  141. for God will not hold him guiltless

  142. who takes His name in vain.

  143. In Scripture,

  144. God takes names very seriously.

  145. And names have deep significance,

  146. especially God-given names.

  147. Names say a lot about the nature

  148. or the character of the person.

  149. And that's why quite often in Scripture,

  150. God actually renames somebody

  151. according to the calling that He's got in their life.

  152. God takes somebody and says,

  153. I've got a plan for your life.

  154. I've got a purpose for your life.

  155. No longer will your name be this.

  156. I want to rename you this.

  157. And so God takes a man called Abram,

  158. and He renames him Abraham.

  159. God takes Sarai,

  160. and He renames her Sarah.

  161. God takes Jacob,

  162. this name that means a wrestler,

  163. a bit of a cheat and a scoundrel,

  164. and He renames him Israel.

  165. Jesus takes Simon,

  166. and He renames him Peter.

  167. And so in the Bible,

  168. this connection between a God-given name

  169. and the essentially important thing about this person,

  170. this connection between these two things

  171. is really significant.

  172. names aren't just a nice-sounding name.

  173. Names aren't just given

  174. because they rhyme with your family name.

  175. There's a deep and significant connection

  176. between who the person is

  177. and the God-given name that they receive.

  178. And then there's no more importance

  179. or significant event in this regard

  180. than when God gives Himself a name.

  181. In Exodus chapter 3,

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  182. God comes to Moses,

  183. and He calls Moses to deliver His people

  184. out of slavery in Egypt

  185. and take them into the promised land.

  186. And so He comes up with this plan

  187. to send Moses back to Egypt

  188. to deliver His people.

  189. And Moses says,

  190. Okay, God,

  191. but whom shall I say has sent me?

  192. What is your name?

  193. And God gives Himself a name.

  194. He says,

  195. Tell the people of Israel,

  196. tell the Egyptians,

  197. that I am has sent you.

  198. God gives Himself this name.

  199. It's an unusual name.

  200. And the name is,

  201. I am,

  202. or I am who I am.

  203. In Hebrew,

  204. we say Yahweh,

  205. or Jehovah.

  206. In our English Bibles,

  207. it's written Lord,

  208. capital L-O-R-D.

  209. It's a name that appears

  210. over 600 times

  211. in the Old Testament.

  212. But it's this unusual name

  213. that simply is,

  214. I am.

  215. I am who I am.

  216. And the reason God gives Himself this name

  217. is because it signifies

  218. His essential essence.

  219. that this God

  220. is the God

  221. who has no limitations.

  222. He has no hindrances.

  223. He has no beginning

  224. and no end.

  225. He's not the God

  226. of a specific geography.

  227. He's not the God

  228. of only Israel

  229. or the ancient Middle East.

  230. He's not the God

  231. of a time period,

  232. 2,000 years ago.

  233. He's not the God

  234. of a specific culture

  235. like Israel

  236. or maybe America

  237. or England.

  238. No, no.

  239. He is the supreme,

  240. unhindered,

  241. unrestricted,

  242. unrivaled,

  243. supreme God

  244. that has no limitations,

  245. no beginning,

  246. no end.

  247. He never changes.

  248. He is the absolutely

  249. supreme being.

  250. He is the great

  251. I am.

  252. God's great name,

  253. Jehovah,

  254. Yahweh,

  255. I am,

  256. signifies this

  257. magnificent essence

  258. of His being

  259. that He is the

  260. great supreme

  261. God,

  262. the one

  263. who is.

  264. before the world

  265. was made,

  266. before a single star

  267. was created,

  268. if there was a Big Bang,

  269. before any Big Bang

  270. took place,

  271. God was there.

  272. I am

  273. who I am.

  274. And then we see

  275. why God says,

  276. do not take

  277. my name

  278. in vain

  279. because names

  280. signify

  281. character,

  282. who we are

  283. and who God is.

  284. In the Old Testament,

  285. to abuse God's name

  286. was deadly serious.

  287. In Leviticus 24,

  288. it says this,

  289. whoever blasphemes,

  290. now the word blaspheme

  291. means to slander,

  292. it actually means

  293. to pierce something,

  294. to cut something

  295. into pieces.

  296. In English,

  297. we might say

  298. to shred something.

  299. Whoever blasphemes

  300. or slanders

  301. or shreds

  302. God's name

  303. shall surely

  304. be put to death.

  305. All the congregation

  306. shall stone Him,

  307. both the sojourner

  308. as well as the native,

  309. when He blasphemes

  310. the name,

  311. shall be put to death.

  312. Now, of course,

  313. this is Old Testament

  314. civil law

  315. and in the New Testament

  316. covenant under Jesus,

  317. the application

  318. of this law changes.

  319. If someone at Watermark

  320. continues to blaspheme

  321. God's name,

  322. we don't take them

  323. to the parking lot

  324. and stone them to death,

  325. thankfully.

  326. But the application

  327. would look something

  328. like church discipline.

  329. Maybe somebody continues

  330. to abuse

  331. and slander God's name,

  332. someone in the church,

  333. and may after a time,

  334. we go to the congregation

  335. and say,

  336. we've spoken

  337. and we've warned

  338. this person.

  339. If it does not stop,

  340. we might need to ask

  341. this person

  342. to leave the church.

  343. Abusing God's name

  344. is deadly serious.

  345. And this is what

  346. the third commandment

  347. is all about.

  348. It's about honoring God

  349. and honoring His glory

  350. by the way

  351. that we treat His name,

  352. not using His name

  353. and who He is

  354. for our own agenda,

  355. our own means.

  356. For those of us

  357. that grew up

  358. in Christian families

  359. or Christian culture,

  360. we may think

  361. that this means

  362. not simply blaspheming,

  363. saying something like,

  364. oh my God,

  365. or using Christ

  366. or Jesus

  367. and His name

  368. either flippantly

  369. or as a joke

  370. or even worse,

  371. as a way of swearing.

  372. Now,

  373. throughout the ages,

  374. Christians have always

  375. held that to say

  376. things like,

  377. oh my God,

  378. or to use Jesus' name

  379. as a joke

  380. or as a swear word

  381. is a clear violation

  382. of the third commandment.

  383. Christians shouldn't do that.

  384. And the reason is

  385. because God's name

  386. is holy and reverential.

  387. But it's not just that.

  388. It's not just a name.

  389. God's name is holy

  390. because God is holy.

  391. God's name is reverential

  392. because God is reverential.

  393. God's name is powerful

  394. because God Himself

  395. is powerful.

  396. And so Christians

  397. should never just casually

  398. throw out God's name.

  399. But actually,

  400. this instruction,

  401. the third commandment,

  402. is so much more

  403. than what we say

  404. because the commandment

  405. doesn't say,

  406. do not say the name

  407. of the Lord your God

  408. in vain.

  409. Do not speak His name

  410. in vain.

  411. Actually,

  412. the verb here

  413. is to carry

  414. or to take up,

  415. to bear His name.

  416. It says,

  417. do not lift up

  418. or bear God's name

  419. in vain.

  420. And here we see

  421. how broad

  422. this commandment is.

  423. Someone may say,

  424. well,

  425. I never curse.

  426. I never swear.

  427. I never use God's name

  428. irreverently.

  429. But friends,

  430. for those of us

  431. that are followers

  432. of Jesus this morning,

  433. part of what it means

  434. is when you're a Christian,

  435. when we repent of our sin

  436. and turn to Christ,

  437. is that we take up His name.

  438. We bear His name.

  439. In fact,

  440. the word Christian

  441. means a little Christ,

  442. someone who's learning

  443. to imitate

  444. or become like Christ.

  445. Friends,

  446. if you consider yourself

  447. a Christian this morning,

  448. you bear His name.

  449. You're no longer your own.

  450. You belong to Him.

  451. Friends,

  452. if we claim to be

  453. the people of God

  454. and yet live as if we're not,

  455. we take His name in vain.

  456. If we claim to follow Him

  457. and love Him

  458. and adore Him

  459. and live for His glory

  460. but then live

  461. as though we don't,

  462. we take the precious name

  463. of God

  464. and we render it meaningless,

  465. insignificant,

  466. worthless.

  467. We take it in vain.

  468. So,

  469. what does this mean

  470. for our lives?

  471. Well,

  472. the big idea is that

  473. those who bear His name

  474. or to honor the God

  475. whose name we bear

  476. by not using it

  477. for our own advantage

  478. but using God's name

  479. to glorify

  480. and magnify Him.

  481. How should we do this?

  482. Well,

  483. there's two ways practically.

  484. The first is

  485. we should never

  486. take up God's name

  487. in the service

  488. of that which is false

  489. and secondly,

  490. we should never

  491. take up God's name

  492. in the service

  493. of that which is superficial

  494. or frivolous.

  495. So,

  496. let's look practically

  497. at what that means

  498. or looks like

  499. in our lives.

  500. Firstly,

  501. let's not take up

  502. God's name

  503. in the service

  504. of that which is false.

  505. How should we do this?

  506. Well,

  507. let's be careful

  508. with honesty

  509. and truth-telling.

  510. Many of us will know

  511. that courts of law

  512. for tens of years,

  513. even hundreds of years,

  514. have often asked

  515. that when somebody

  516. comes to the court of law

  517. they put their hand

  518. on a Bible

  519. and they swear

  520. to tell the truth,

  521. the whole truth

  522. and nothing but the truth,

  523. so help me God.

  524. Well,

  525. obviously if somebody there

  526. lies

  527. or is less than honest,

  528. it's a clear violation.

  529. They've appealed

  530. to the security

  531. and the faithfulness

  532. of God's name

  533. and then are dishonoring it

  534. when they don't tell the truth.

  535. But Jesus actually

  536. says something interesting.

  537. He says that

  538. even when we give

  539. other oaths,

  540. when we swear

  541. by something

  542. in our world,

  543. we do the same thing.

  544. He says,

  545. do not swear by heaven

  546. because it's God's throne,

  547. but do not swear

  548. by the earth

  549. because it's His creation.

  550. It's in His hands.

  551. And so when we say

  552. something like,

  553. I swear on my life

  554. or I swear on the hair

  555. of my head,

  556. some of us have got

  557. less than others,

  558. even that is not

  559. in our realm,

  560. our control.

  561. It's in the realm

  562. of Jesus.

  563. Our lives are not really

  564. in our hands,

  565. how much hair we have

  566. or how little hair we have.

  567. It's not really in our hands

  568. unless you're trying

  569. to grow a beard.

  570. But even those things,

  571. it's in God's hands,

  572. right?

  573. When we make these oaths

  574. and we take on

  575. or claim something

  576. which is not really ours,

  577. it's God's,

  578. and then we are

  579. less than honest,

  580. we take God's name

  581. in vain.

  582. I remember when I was

  583. a child,

  584. I used to convince myself

  585. that if I said something

  586. that had an element

  587. of truth to it,

  588. maybe 20% truth,

  589. then I wasn't really lying.

  590. And if I convinced myself

  591. of that,

  592. then I could convince myself

  593. that if I were to lie

  594. but it was very special

  595. circumstances,

  596. well,

  597. I was off the hook.

  598. And of course,

  599. once I convinced myself

  600. of that,

  601. then any circumstances

  602. became special circumstances.

  603. I found a clever way

  604. of allowing myself

  605. to get off the hook

  606. of not being someone

  607. who lies.

  608. But for those of us

  609. that are Christians,

  610. whatever we say

  611. or we think,

  612. we do so knowing

  613. that the God

  614. who is all truth,

  615. the God in whom

  616. there is no shadow

  617. of changing,

  618. the God in whom

  619. there is nothing

  620. that is false,

  621. everything we say

  622. and think,

  623. we do before His throne

  624. and before His holiness.

  625. Christians should always

  626. be those that are honest

  627. and truth-telling.

  628. Second way we can

  629. honor God's name

  630. is by making sure

  631. there's continuity

  632. with what we say

  633. and how we behave

  634. with our conduct.

  635. I'm sure all of us

  636. have encountered Christians

  637. maybe in the workplace

  638. that are very vocal

  639. about their faith.

  640. They're always listening

  641. to Christian music

  642. at top volume

  643. in the office place.

  644. They've got their Bible

  645. on the desk

  646. on the one side

  647. and on the corner

  648. of the desk

  649. they may have a book

  650. that says God is my CEO.

  651. There may be those people

  652. that before a business meeting

  653. they'll call their colleagues

  654. and say let's really pray.

  655. I think God wants

  656. to give us this new client.

  657. They're very vocal

  658. about their faith

  659. and what church they go to

  660. and all their Christian activities

  661. and yet in the pressure

  662. moments of work

  663. they can be very obnoxious,

  664. maybe arrogant,

  665. very uncaring

  666. and unsympathetic

  667. and actually

  668. it's very evident to all

  669. that the most important person

  670. in their life

  671. is really themselves.

  672. They don't listen to others.

  673. They're always talking

  674. about themselves

  675. in conversations.

  676. They're the center

  677. of their own world.

  678. Friends,

  679. these things ought not to be so.

  680. It's not just a bad example.

  681. It's lifting up God's name

  682. and then rendering it meaningless,

  683. insignificant

  684. and worthless.

  685. Here's another way

  686. that we need to be careful

  687. about the way

  688. that we use God's word.

  689. When we take up God's word

  690. which is attest me

  691. to his name

  692. and then we twist it

  693. to say what we want it to say

  694. or even worse

  695. we twist it to say something

  696. that it doesn't say really.

  697. We take the reverence

  698. and the glory of God's name

  699. and we use it

  700. for our own agenda.

  701. We take it in vain.

  702. Now of course

  703. all Christians

  704. need to be aware of this

  705. but those for whom

  706. this is especially pertinent

  707. is pastors and preachers.

  708. Friends,

  709. when people stand

  710. before God's people

  711. and they open up God's word

  712. and say

  713. this is what God says

  714. and yet that's not

  715. what God really says

  716. is a deadly serious

  717. thing to do.

  718. God doesn't mince his words

  719. what he has to say

  720. about pastors and preachers

  721. that twist God's word

  722. for their own agenda

  723. or to say what they want to say.

  724. In the book of Jeremiah

  725. we see this happening a lot.

  726. The prophets are those

  727. who are given God's word

  728. and they're meant to call

  729. God's people to repentance

  730. to turn to God

  731. and yet rather than doing that

  732. they say what people

  733. want to hear

  734. rather than what God

  735. has given them to say.

  736. Listen to what God says.

  737. He says,

  738. The prophets

  739. are prophesying lies

  740. in my name.

  741. They are saying

  742. peace, peace

  743. when there is no peace.

  744. They are prophesying

  745. to you a lying vision

  746. worthless divination

  747. the deceit

  748. of their own minds.

  749. Friends,

  750. what this means

  751. is that anybody

  752. that stands up

  753. to preach God's word

  754. better do so

  755. in the fear of God.

  756. When you stand up

  757. and say

  758. this is what God says

  759. listen up

  760. you are calling people

  761. not to yourself

  762. but to God.

  763. We better make sure

  764. that we are honoring

  765. his name.

  766. But what that also means

  767. is that Christians

  768. ought to hold

  769. their pastors

  770. and their preachers

  771. accountable

  772. that what is being said

  773. from the pulpit

  774. is really coming

  775. directly from God's word.

  776. This is a deadly

  777. serious thing

  778. to do.

  779. How we handle

  780. God's word.

  781. So all of that

  782. is honor God's name

  783. by not taking it up

  784. in the service

  785. of what is false.

  786. But then we also

  787. need to honor God's name

  788. by not taking it up

  789. in the service

  790. of that which is

  791. superficial

  792. or frivolous.

  793. Here's a couple of ways

  794. that we can do that.

  795. We ought to be

  796. really careful

  797. when we say things

  798. like God has told me so

  799. or God told me

  800. to do this

  801. or God has said

  802. this to me.

  803. Now of course

  804. God does speak to us

  805. even today

  806. he speaks to us

  807. from his word

  808. and he can speak to us

  809. by divine revelation.

  810. And maybe it is true

  811. that sometimes

  812. God is leading

  813. and guiding us

  814. according to making

  815. certain decisions

  816. or doing things.

  817. But we need to be

  818. really careful

  819. when we attach

  820. God's name

  821. to our own agenda

  822. or our own ideas.

  823. And for two reasons.

  824. One,

  825. it can be quite manipulative.

  826. Who's going to disagree

  827. with you

  828. when you say

  829. God told me this?

  830. Right?

  831. How can you argue

  832. with God?

  833. But secondly,

  834. it's very easy

  835. and sometimes

  836. even unconsciously

  837. to attach

  838. divine authority

  839. to our own ideas

  840. or our own opinions

  841. because we want

  842. backing for them.

  843. We need to be

  844. really careful

  845. about just throwing

  846. out casually

  847. God told me this.

  848. Here's another way.

  849. We need to be

  850. really careful

  851. with our prayers.

  852. We honor God's name

  853. when we're not casual

  854. with our prayers.

  855. I've been so challenged

  856. by this recently.

  857. A few weeks ago

  858. I was reading a book

  859. and Kevin DeYoung,

  860. the great pastor,

  861. was talking about

  862. this concept

  863. with regard

  864. to the third commandment.

  865. And listen to

  866. what he said.

  867. He said,

  868. We ought to be

  869. really thoughtful,

  870. careful,

  871. and intentional

  872. with our prayers.

  873. For example,

  874. what about praying

  875. with our kids

  876. around the dinner table

  877. or before bed?

  878. In the midst

  879. of all the chaos,

  880. sometimes I'll quickly

  881. pray to God

  882. for the food

  883. or for the day

  884. and then be done.

  885. The problem

  886. is not the short prayer.

  887. The problem

  888. is that I'm

  889. thoughtlessly

  890. tossing out

  891. the name of God

  892. as just one more

  893. hurdle to clear

  894. before I can

  895. finally eat

  896. or finally get

  897. some peace

  898. and quiet

  899. in the house.

  900. No doubt,

  901. God is more patient

  902. with three-year-olds

  903. who can't sit still

  904. than he is

  905. with parents

  906. who can't slow down

  907. to get their minds

  908. and hearts right.

  909. It would be better,

  910. friends,

  911. not to pray

  912. of the meal

  913. at all

  914. if the alternative

  915. is praying

  916. God's name

  917. falsely.

  918. Man,

  919. I was so challenged

  920. by that.

  921. As a family,

  922. we pray before

  923. every meal.

  924. We ask God

  925. to bless the food

  926. and we thank him

  927. for it.

  928. But after 10 years

  929. of doing that,

  930. it's so easy

  931. for that just

  932. to become a pattern,

  933. just something you do

  934. before you can

  935. finally get to eat.

  936. Friends,

  937. it's true that Jesus,

  938. when he taught us

  939. how to pray,

  940. we pray to our

  941. Father in heaven.

  942. What a great thing

  943. it is that God

  944. is our Father.

  945. But he also taught us

  946. to pray,

  947. hallowed be your name.

  948. God,

  949. honor your name.

  950. Father in heaven,

  951. glorify your name.

  952. Friends,

  953. when we pray,

  954. we address this glorious,

  955. majestic,

  956. sovereign,

  957. limitless,

  958. unchanging,

  959. unrivaled,

  960. God with no limitations,

  961. the great I am.

  962. And yet,

  963. praying half-hearted prayers

  964. that we don't really mean,

  965. lifting up God's name

  966. and then rendering it

  967. insignificant and meaningless

  968. is something

  969. that we should avoid.

  970. Finally,

  971. last practical thing

  972. is this.

  973. We need to be careful

  974. about our worship.

  975. And particularly,

  976. I'm thinking of

  977. when the songs

  978. that we sing.

  979. How many of us

  980. have come to family worship

  981. on Sunday morning?

  982. Our minds are all

  983. over the place,

  984. our hearts are all

  985. over the place,

  986. and we sing the songs,

  987. but our hearts

  988. are not really in it.

  989. Maybe our minds

  990. are drifting

  991. and we're not really

  992. thinking about

  993. what we're singing,

  994. or maybe even worse,

  995. we are aware

  996. of what we're singing,

  997. but we're not sure

  998. if we really believe it.

  999. Friends,

  1000. it's when we

  1001. mouth these words

1002. and we sing His praises,

1003. but we're not in awe,

  1004. we're not marveling,

  1005. we're not attentive

  1006. to the awesomeness

  1007. and the majesty

  1008. and the glory

1009. of who our God is.

  1010. In the Old Testament,

  1011. the book of Samuel,

  1012. there's this priest

  1013. called Eli,

1014. and he has these two sons,

  1015. and the Bible

  1016. actually describes them

  1017. as worthless men,

  1018. and the reason is

  1019. because the priests

  1020. were to look after

1021. the worship of God's people,

  1022. and Eli's sons

1023. were meant to help him

  1024. in the worship

  1025. of God's people.

  1026. And so God's people

  1027. would bring their worship,

  1028. their sacrifices,

  1029. maybe a bull

  1030. or a goat

  1031. or a lamb,

  1032. they would bring it

  1033. to the tabernacle

  1034. as an offering

  1035. of worship.

  1036. But Eli's sons,

  1037. these worthless men,

  1038. would often take

  1039. what God's people

  1040. were bringing as worship,

1041. and they would use it

  1042. for their own advantage.

  1043. Instead of burning it

  1044. and offering it

  1045. to God,

1046. they would eat it themselves,

  1047. they would line

  1048. their own pockets,

  1049. they took what was

  1050. a sacred endeavor,

  1051. a sacred action,

  1052. and used it

  1053. for their own advantage.

  1054. And so listen

  1055. to what Samuel says.

  1056. He says,

  1057. Thus,

1058. the sin of the young men

  1059. was very great

1060. in the sight of the Lord.

  1061. For the men treated

  1062. the offering,

1063. the worship of the Lord,

  1064. with contempt,

  1065. with disdain.

1066. It wasn't that they were

  1067. worshipping a false god,

1068. they weren't telling the people

  1069. to stop worshipping Yahweh

  1070. and now worship Baal,

  1071. but the worship

  1072. that God's people

  1073. were bringing,

  1074. they were treating

  1075. with contempt,

  1076. as a light thing.

  1077. They were treating it

  1078. in vain.

  1079. Friends,

  1080. how many of us,

  1081. how many times

  1082. have treated

  1083. the offering

  1084. of the Lord

  1085. as a vain thing?

  1086. How many of us

  1087. have treated

  1088. Christ's offering?

  1089. When Jesus went

  1090. to the cross

  1091. and He offered

  1092. His blood

  1093. to cover us

  1094. from our sins,

  1095. to remove the guilt

  1096. of sin and shame

  1097. from us,

  1098. to remove from us

  1099. the penalty of death

  1100. that hung over us,

  1101. to welcome us

  1102. into our family,

  1103. into His family.

  1104. And yet,

  1105. how many of us

  1106. treat

  1107. the offering

  1108. of Christ

  1109. and His blood

  1110. as a vain

  1111. and an insignificant thing?

  1112. The Apostle Peter

  1113. reminds us

  1114. that in the Gospel

  1115. we are saved,

  1116. we are ransomed

  1117. from death,

  1118. we are brought

  1119. out of darkness

  1120. into light,

1121. not with a perishable thing

1122. such as gold or silver.

1123. Jesus didn't buy us back

  1124. with a billion dollars.

  1125. He ransomed us

  1126. from eternal death

  1127. with the precious blood

  1128. on the cross.

  1129. Friends,

1130. in the book of Romans,

  1131. the Apostle Paul,

  1132. he writes,

  1133. he says,

  1134. don't show contempt

  1135. for the riches

  1136. of God's kindness,

  1137. His patience,

  1138. His tolerance,

  1139. don't you realize

  1140. that God's patience

  1141. and His kindness

1142. is meant to lead us

  1143. to repentance,

  1144. not to abusing

  1145. His offering

  1146. of His sacrifice.

  1147. Now,

1148. as we come to a close,

  1149. look at how this

  1150. third commandment ends.

  1151. It's not just

  1152. an instruction

  1153. not to be false

  1154. and superficial.

1155. It comes with a warning.

  1156. It says,

1157. do not take the name,

  1158. the precious name

  1159. of God in vain,

  1160. for God will not

  1161. hold him guiltless

  1162. who takes His name

  1163. in vain.

  1164. Throughout history,

  1165. there have always been

  1166. men and women

  1167. that have stood up

1168. in a court of law,

  1169. put their hand

  1170. on a Bible

  1171. and said,

  1172. I promise to tell

  1173. the truth,

  1174. the whole truth,

1175. and nothing but the truth,

  1176. so help me God.

  1177. And then have proceeded

1178. to be less than honest,

  1179. to commit perjury.

1180. Why do people do that?

  1181. Well,

  1182. the reason is because

  1183. we think we can

  1184. get away with it.

  1185. We think that

  1186. no one's going

  1187. to find us out.

  1188. But look at what

  1189. God says here.

  1190. He says,

  1191. He will not allow

  1192. His name

1193. to be taken up falsely

  1194. or rendered worthlessly

1195. and do nothing about it.

  1196. Earlier this week,

  1197. I was just thinking

  1198. what I would do,

  1199. how I would respond

  1200. if someone were

  1201. to slander

  1202. or joke about

  1203. or malign

  1204. my wife.

  1205. If someone were

  1206. to take my wife

  1207. and then malign

  1208. her behind her back,

  1209. slander her

  1210. and shred

  1211. her reputation.

  1212. Well,

  1213. I'm not sure

  1214. what I would do,

1215. but I can promise you

  1216. it wouldn't be pretty.

  1217. And the reason is

  1218. because my wife

  1219. is the most precious

1220. thing in all the world

  1221. to me.

  1222. There's nothing more

  1223. precious to me

  1224. on this earth.

  1225. Nobody gets to

  1226. slander my wife

1227. and get away with it.

  1228. Nobody gets to

  1229. mess with her

  1230. or mess with her

  1231. reputation

  1232. and just get away

  1233. with it.

  1234. Friends,

  1235. God here says

  1236. that the sovereign,

  1237. majestic,

  1238. supreme God,

  1239. the great I am

  1240. is jealous

  1241. for his name.

  1242. Nobody gets

  1243. to deride him,

  1244. to slander him,

  1245. to blaspheme

  1246. the precious name

  1247. of Christ

  1248. and to get away

  1249. with it.

  1250. Friends,

  1251. playing loose

  1252. and casual

  1253. with God's name,

1254. whether it's in our prayers

  1255. or in our worship

  1256. or in our conduct

1257. or in any other way

  1258. is a deadly serious

  1259. thing to do.

1260. In the book of Acts

  1261. in chapter 5,

  1262. there is a couple

  1263. who use God's name

  1264. to advance

  1265. their own agenda.

  1266. They're pretending

  1267. to be godly

  1268. and God-honoring

  1269. and to love

  1270. and worship God

  1271. but actually

  1272. in their hearts

  1273. they want to honor

  1274. their own name.

  1275. Friends,

1276. they both end up dead.

  1277. First Ananias

  1278. and then his wife

  1279. Sapphira

1280. both on the same day.

  1281. Friends,

  1282. taking God's name

  1283. casually,

  1284. flippantly,

  1285. in a vain manner

  1286. is a deadly serious

  1287. thing to do.

  1288. And so,

  1289. is there any hope

  1290. for sinners

  1291. like you and me?

  1292. Friends,

  1293. is there any hope

  1294. for me?

  1295. I,

  1296. who this week

  1297. have blasphemed

  1298. God's name,

  1299. not with my words

  1300. but with my conduct,

  1301. with my lifestyle,

  1302. as I've lived

  1303. for my own glory

  1304. rather than

1305. the glory of his name.

  1306. 2,000 years ago,

  1307. Jesus is walking

  1308. into the street,

  1309. not walking,

  1310. he's riding a donkey

  1311. into the streets

  1312. of Jerusalem

1313. and there are all sorts

  1314. of people

  1315. that are calling out

  1316. his name.

  1317. They're describing

  1318. him as the king.

  1319. Hosanna,

  1320. Hosanna,

  1321. blessed is he

1322. who comes in the name

  1323. of the Lord.

1324. And just a few days later,

  1325. they're standing

  1326. in the public square

  1327. before Pontius Pilate

  1328. and they're saying,

  1329. we have no king

  1330. but Caesar.

  1331. Crucify him,

  1332. crucify him.

  1333. Friends,

  1334. and shockingly,

  1335. Jesus at his trial

  1336. is accused

  1337. of blaspheming

  1338. the name of God

  1339. because he's accused

  1340. of equating himself

  1341. with God.

  1342. The irony is

  1343. the only person

  1344. who ever walked

  1345. on earth

  1346. who could legitimately

  1347. claim the name

  1348. of God

  1349. is mocked,

  1350. slandered,

  1351. spat upon,

  1352. abused,

  1353. condemned,

  1354. and ultimately

  1355. condemned to death

  1356. for taking up

  1357. the name of God.

  1358. But remember

1359. that just a few days,

  1360. a few hours

  1361. before Jesus dies,

  1362. he's praying

  1363. to his father

  1364. and he says,

  1365. Father,

  1366. the hour has come.

  1367. Glorify your name.

  1368. What's he talking about?

  1369. The hour has come.

  1370. What's the hour?

  1371. It's the hour

  1372. of his death,

1373. the hour of his crucifixion,

  1374. the hour when he's

  1375. going to be nailed

  1376. to the cross.

1377. And even in the moments

1378. before he's put on trial,

  1379. the days before

  1380. his crucifixion,

1381. the cry of his heart

  1382. is not to me,

  1383. God,

  1384. not to me,

  1385. but to your name

  1386. give the glory.

  1387. Father,

  1388. glorify your name.

  1389. Father,

1390. lift up your holy name.

  1391. Jesus,

  1392. the only man

  1393. who ever perfectly

  1394. obeyed the third commandment,

  1395. the only man

  1396. that never ever

  1397. slandered

  1398. or took God's name

  1399. in vain,

  1400. the one who bore

  1401. God's name

  1402. and perfectly honored it,

  1403. Jesus is condemned

1404. to die as a criminal.

  1405. Jesus has his name

  1406. and his glory

  1407. dragged through the mud

  1408. as he's slandered

  1409. and abused

  1410. as he's nailed

  1411. to the cross.

  1412. And while he's there

  1413. on the cross

  1414. and he's struggling

  1415. to breathe

  1416. because of the weight

  1417. of his body

  1418. is hanging against

  1419. his lungs,

  1420. he's struggling

  1421. to breathe

  1422. and even still

  1423. the people

  1424. on the ground

  1425. around him

  1426. are mocking him.

  1427. They're saying,

  1428. you call yourself God?

  1429. If you're God,

  1430. save yourself.

  1431. Come down

  1432. from the cross.

  1433. And Jesus

  1434. doesn't do it.

  1435. Why?

  1436. Because he's not there

  1437. to save himself.

  1438. Friends,

  1439. he's there

  1440. to save others.

  1441. He's there

  1442. to save

  1443. the very people

1444. who just a few hours

  1445. earlier were crying out

  1446. to crucify him,

  1447. crucify him.

  1448. Friends,

  1449. he's there

  1450. to save

  1451. the very people

  1452. who down

  1453. on the ground

  1454. are mocking him,

  1455. reviling him,

  1456. spitting upon him,

  1457. condemning him.

  1458. Friends,

  1459. Jesus is there

  1460. to save those

1461. who will turn to him

  1462. in faith and repentance.

  1463. As we think

  1464. about our lives,

  1465. as I think

  1466. about my own life,

  1467. friends,

  1468. how many of us

  1469. have used God's name

  1470. for our own purposes?

1471. Maybe for some of us

  1472. we've attached

  1473. the name of Jesus

  1474. to our lives

  1475. as a cheap

1476. and easy form of grace,

1477. as a get out of jail card

  1478. to save us

  1479. from eternal hell,

  1480. but we actually

  1481. have no intention

  1482. of living

  1483. for the glory

  1484. of his name.

  1485. Friends,

  1486. Jesus came

1487. to die on the cross

  1488. for sinners

  1489. like you and I,

  1490. to save us

1491. if you'll turn to him

  1492. in faith and repentance.

  1493. Friends,

  1494. Jesus had not only

  1495. his body

  1496. but also his name

  1497. nailed to the cross

  1498. as he was executed

  1499. as a criminal

  1500. and a troublemaker.

  1501. But he gave

  1502. his name up.

  1503. He sacrificed himself

  1504. and his honor

  1505. and his name.

1506. He gave up his name

1507. that he might give us

  1508. a name.

1509. That we might be called

  1510. his beloved.

1511. That we might be called

  1512. sons and daughters

  1513. of God.

1514. That we might be called

  1515. his righteous ones.

1516. That we might no longer

  1517. live for ourselves

  1518. but for the glory

  1519. of his name.

  1520. Let's pray.

  1521. Oh Jesus,

  1522. we come before you

  1523. this morning

  1524. and God,

  1525. your word

  1526. challenges us.

  1527. Father,

  1528. we are so sorry

  1529. for the many times

  1530. we've taken your name

  1531. in vain.

  1532. God,

  1533. won't you forgive us

  1534. but not only that,

1535. won't you also change us?

  1536. Come and help us,

  1537. Lord,

1538. to not only bear your name

  1539. in our lips

1540. but to have your name

  1541. written on our hearts.

  1542. God,

  1543. may our conduct

  1544. be in align

  1545. with the words

  1546. of our mouth.

  1547. God,

  1548. come and help us,

  1549. we pray.

  1550. In your wonderful name.

  1551. Amen.

1552. Chris is going to come

  1553. and lead us

  1554. in a moment

  1555. of responding to that

  1556. and just repentance.

  1557. And so let's take

  1558. a few moments.

  1559. Let's not rush off

  1560. too quickly.

  1561. Let's listen

  1562. and really respond

  1563. to God

  1564. as Chris leads us

  1565. in this time.

  1566. Let's do that.

  1567. I believe God

  1568. is actually really

  1569. speaking to us

  1570. right now

  1571. so we don't want

  1572. to just rush

  1573. this moment.

  1574. When God speaks,

  1575. he wants us

  1576. to hear

  1577. and to respond

  1578. in repentance

  1579. and in faith

1580. and in turning to him.

  1581. And so I want

  1582. to just

  1583. read from

  1584. the last part

  1585. of Psalm 139

  1586. which says this,

  1587. Search me,

  1588. O God,

  1589. and know my heart.

  1590. Try me

  1591. and know my thoughts.

  1592. See if there is

  1593. any grievous way

  1594. in me

  1595. and lead me

  1596. in the way

  1597. everlasting.

  1598. I want us

  1599. to actually spend

  1600. just a minute

  1601. really reflecting

  1602. and asking God

  1603. and praying

  1604. that prayer.

  1605. God,

  1606. search my heart.

  1607. Search me

  1608. where I have

  1609. cheapened your name.

  1610. where I have

  1611. treated it

  1612. so lightly.

  1613. I have treated

  1614. it so casually.

  1615. I have thought

  1616. that your cross

  1617. was just a

  1618. get out of jail

  1619. free card

  1620. but I have not

  1621. realized

  1622. who you really

  1623. are.

  1624. Some of us

  1625. we need to repent

  1626. for the way

  1627. we have used

  1628. God's name.

  1629. The way that

  1630. we have used

  1631. it in prayer

  1632. like a genie

  1633. just to get

  1634. what we want

  1635. but not seeing

  1636. who he truly is.

  1637. some of us

  1638. need to repent

  1639. because

  1640. he's called us

  1641. and given us

  1642. a privilege

  1643. to be his ambassadors

  1644. and yet our lives

  1645. have not lived

  1646. in the light

  1647. of that calling.

  1648. So I want you

  1649. to take a minute

  1650. now

  1651. and pray that

  1652. prayer

  1653. search me

  1654. oh God

  1655. search me

  1656. oh God

  1657. know my heart

  1658. try me

  1659. try my thoughts

  1660. see if there's

  1661. any grievous

  1662. way

  1663. any way

  1664. that hurts

  1665. and dishonors

  1666. you

  1667. let's just

  1668. take a minute

  1669. to do that

  1670. whatever

  1671. God

  1672. or

  1673. us

  1674. see if there's

  1675. even here

  1676. and they're

  1677. in love

  1678. and they're

  1679. in love

  1680. and they're

  1681. far

  1682. in

  1683. whereas

  1684. you

  1685. see if there's

  1686. something to know

  1687. as the

  1688. forgiveness

  1689. and you

  1690. have just

  1691. heard

  1692. and let's look

  1693. at the

  1694. other

  1695. way

  1696. in YOUR

  1697. Amen.

  1698. Amen.

  1699. Amen.

1700. I believe there are some people who you've called yourself a Christian for a long time.

1701. But as you've been listening and hearing what it really means to bear the name,

1702. you realize your life has no correlation to that at all.

1703. And God is calling you today.

1704. He's calling you not to run away from Him, but to run to Him.

1705. In true repentance this morning.

1706. Father, we just come before you who are the great, the holy, the glorious,

1707. the one who just rules over all of creation.

1708. And yet you would come and die for us.

1709. You would do everything that we might bear your name.

  1710. And it's a beautiful name, Lord.

1711. But forgive us where we have diminished your name and just treated it so lightly, Lord, in our lives.

1712. Please have mercy on us.

1713. Lord, we've spoken in ways where we've spoken your name, but we've just used it for our own agendas.

1714. Lord, we've been ashamed of your name.

1715. Lord, we've been ashamed of your name.

1716. Lord, we've been ashamed of your name.

1717. And we've been to the church service on a Sunday.

1718. Or we've just read our Bibles.

1719. And afterwards, the way that we respond bears no relation at all to the people you've called us to be.

  1720. Father, forgive us.

  1721. Change us.

1722. Lord, we've been ashamed of your name.

1723. You've called us your children.

1724. You've called us ambassadors of you.

1725. You've called us chosen and dearly loved.

1726. And yet, in the light of everyone else around us, we have tried to hide the fact that we are followers of you.

1727. And for some of us, we feel like that sense of detachment from, we feel the hypocrisy in our lives.

1728. We see that our walk and our talk are so different.

1729. And so we've shied away from even sharing the gospel.

1730. We've not run to you in desperate wanting you to change.

1731. But we've used that as an excuse not to even speak your name to others.

1732. Father, have mercy on us.

1733. Call us back to yourself.

1734. Show us your unfailing love.

  1735. Show us your mercy.

1736. Show us that as sons and daughters of the King, that is an incredible privilege.

1737. Please, would you open our eyes to see you today.

  1738. To see your glory.

1739. To not treat you lightly.

1740. But to walk humbly before you.

1741. And to rejoice in your salvation.

  1742. That you forgive us.

1743. And you show us your grace.

  1744. Thank you, Lord.

  1745. In Jesus' name.

  1746. Amen.
