  1. Ruth chapter 1, which you'll find up on the screen.

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  2. We'll read the whole chapter.

  3. In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land.

  4. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons,

  5. went to live for a while in the country of Moab.

  6. The man's name was Elimelech, his wife's name was Naomi,

  7. and the names of his two sons were Malon and Kilion.

  8. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah, and they went to Moab and lived there.

  9. Now Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died and she was left with her two sons.

  10. They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth.

  11. After they lived there about ten years, both Malon and Kilion also died

  12. and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.

  13. When Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them,

  14. she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there.

  15. With her two daughters-in-law, she left the place where she'd been living

  16. and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.

  17. Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law,

  18. Go back, each of you, to your mother's home.

  19. May the Lord show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands and to me.

  20. May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband.

  21. Then she kissed them goodbye, and they wept aloud,

  22. and said to her,

  23. We will go back with you to your people.

  24. But Naomi said, Return home, my daughters.

  25. Why would you come with me?

  26. Am I going to have any more sons who could become your husbands?

  27. Return home, my daughters.

  28. I am too old to have another husband.

  29. Even if I thought there was still hope for me,

  30. even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons,

  31. would you wait until they grew up?

  32. Would you remain unmarried for them?

  33. No, my daughters.

  34. It is more bitter for me than for you,

  35. because the Lord's hand has turned against me.

  36. At this they wept aloud again.

  37. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye,

  38. but Ruth clung to her.

  39. Look, said Naomi,

  40. Your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods.

  41. Go back with her.

  42. But Ruth replied,

  43. Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you.

  44. Where you go, I will go,

  45. and where you stay, I will stay.

  46. Your people will be my people,

  47. and your God, my God.

  48. Where you die, I will die,

  49. and there I will be buried.

  50. May the Lord deal with me,

  51. be it ever so severely,

  52. if even death separates you and me.

  53. When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her,

  54. she stopped urging her.

  55. So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem.

  56. When they arrived in Bethlehem,

  57. the whole town was stirred because of them,

  58. and the women exclaimed,

  59. Can this be Naomi?

  60. Don't call me Naomi, she told them.

  61. Call me Mara,

  62. because the Almighty has made my life very bitter.

  63. I went away full,

  64. but the Lord has brought me back empty.

  65. Why call me Naomi?

  66. The Lord has afflicted me.

  67. The Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.

  68. So Naomi returned from Moab,

  69. accompanied by Ruth the Moabite,

  70. her daughter-in-law,

  71. arriving in Bethlehem

  72. as the barley harvest was beginning.

  73. Amen.

  74. This is God's word for us.

  75. So we're beginning a short study

  76. in the book of Ruth,

  77. and today we're thinking about

  78. the journey or the journeys

  79. that we see Naomi's family in particular make.

  80. And I hope that it will help us

  81. as we reflect on the journey of life

  82. that we are all on,

  83. the journey of faith

  84. that many of us are on.

  85. What we see in our story today

  86. are probably some realities

  87. that we recognize.

  88. Sometimes in our lives,

  89. in our stories,

  90. we come to what we might call

  91. crossroads moments.

  92. We have important decisions to make,

  93. perhaps about the place where we'll live,

  94. the job that we might take,

  95. an opportunity to pursue or not,

  96. a decision that will shape

  97. our lives moving forward.

  98. It makes me think of the poem

  99. by Robert Frost,

  100. The Road Not Taken,

  101. and that last verse,

  102. which perhaps we find ourselves

  103. at times resonating with.

  104. He says this,

  105. I shall be telling this with a sigh

  106. somewhere ages and ages hence.

  107. Two roads diverse in a wood,

  108. and I,

  109. I took the one less traveled by,

  110. and that has made all the difference.

  111. So sometimes our life comes with decisions,

  112. and those decisions have consequences,

  113. and we see that in this story.

  114. But there are other times

  115. in our stories

  116. where life leaves us no choice,

  117. where circumstances come upon us,

  118. and if we're thinking about a journey,

  119. it's more like perhaps being in a kayak

  120. or a canoe,

  121. and we're hitting river rapids,

  122. and there's only one way we're going.

  123. A journey, perhaps,

  124. that we wouldn't choose,

  125. a situation that we wouldn't desire,

  126. but it comes nevertheless.

  127. And we see that in this story too.

  128. For us, it comes in the form of illness,

  129. and loss,

  130. and redundancy,

  131. and breakup,

  132. and how we respond to those

  133. as they come across our paths.

  134. So the story of Ruth and Naomi,

  135. I think is a really helpful one to reflect on

  136. at any time,

  137. helpful for us at the beginning of a year

  138. to remind us

  139. that wherever we find ourselves

  140. on the journey of life and faith,

  141. we need to recognize who our God is.

  142. We are presented in the book of Ruth

  143. with a God of sovereign grace,

  144. a God who is able to sustain,

  145. a God who is able to bring hope

  146. in the midst of suffering,

  147. a God of sovereign grace

  148. who's ready to seek

  149. and to save those outside of his kingdom,

  150. to bring them in,

  151. to extend his favor to them,

  152. a God who,

  153. despite difficult circumstances,

  154. continues to work out

  155. his plan of redemption,

  156. a God of sovereign mercy

  157. who's working all things

  158. for the good of his people,

  159. even when his providence is hard to bear

  160. and seems a bitter thing,

  161. as we see particularly in chapter 1.

  162. So this evening we're going to follow

  163. the journeys in order to discover

  164. more in particular about our God.

  165. So first five verses,

  166. we can think about this

  167. as Naomi and her family

  168. being on the road to nowhere.

  169. Verse 1 gives us a setting

  170. for our story.

  171. In the days when the judges ruled,

  172. there was a famine in the land.

  173. So this is happening

  174. at the time of the judges,

  175. and this isn't simply giving us

  176. a date stamp.

  177. This is also reminding us

  178. of the theological description

  179. that's behind that,

  180. the spiritual circumstances

  181. that Israel is experiencing

  182. at this time.

  183. In the very last sentence

  184. in the book of Judges,

  185. we read,

  186. in those days Israel had no king,

  187. everyone did as they saw fit.

  188. And to read the book of Judges

  189. is to come across

  190. this repeating pattern,

  191. sometimes called the judges cycle,

  192. where the people turn their back on God,

  193. perhaps they begin to worship

  194. other gods,

  195. and God brings judgment

  196. on the people,

  197. sometimes sending enemies

  198. to the land.

  199. And after a number of years,

  200. the people repent,

  201. they cry out to God,

  202. God in his mercy

  203. sends them a deliverer,

  204. the deliverer comes

  205. and gives them peace

  206. for as long as his life lasts.

  207. But then that cycle repeats again.

  208. Rebellion, disobedience, judgment,

  209. and so on.

  210. And by the end of the book of Judges,

  211. when we come out of the cycle,

  212. what we're left with

  213. is a picture of moral

  214. and social

  215. and political

  216. and religious

  217. chaos and disaster.

  218. It is not a high point

  219. in the spiritual life

  220. of God's people.

  221. And we know that

  222. the story of Ruth

  223. begins at a low point

  224. in the people's spiritual journey

  225. because we're told

  226. there's a famine in the land.

  227. And again,

  228. this famine

  229. is judgment

  230. from God

  231. because of the people's

  232. disobedience.

  233. So even as the story begins,

  234. it begins on this very dark

  235. backdrop.

  236. But it's going to allow

  237. the light of God's love

  238. and grace to shine

  239. really brightly

  240. in time

  241. in Naomi's family.

  242. And in fact,

  243. if we get to the end

  244. of the story,

  245. so if Judges ends,

  246. there was no king

  247. and everyone's doing

  248. as they see fit,

  249. by the end of the book of Ruth,

  250. we know that it's through

  251. Naomi

  252. and especially through

  253. Ruth's family

  254. that ultimately King David

  255. will come.

  256. God's choice of a king,

  257. kingship,

  258. is the answer

  259. to the sin

  260. and rebellion

  261. among the people of God.

  262. And that, of course,

  263. prepares us

  264. for the coming

  265. of our great King Jesus.

  266. So having introduced

  267. the time for us

  268. when this story happens,

  269. we're then introduced

  270. to a family.

  271. And especially,

  272. we can think about Elimelech,

  273. the head of this family,

  274. married to Naomi,

  275. two sons,

  276. Malon and Kilion.

  277. And immediately,

  278. as we're introduced to them,

  279. we see that he is faced

  280. with a choice.

  281. As there is a famine

  282. in the land,

  283. he has two roads

  284. available to him.

  285. One,

  286. he can stay

  287. in Bethlehem.

  288. Bethlehem,

  289. which means

  290. house of bread,

  291. in the promised land.

  292. What Elimelech could do

  293. is he could,

  294. with his fellow countrymen,

  295. he could lament

  296. over their sin,

  297. over their turning

  298. their backs on God.

  299. He could return to God

  300. with faith

  301. and trust in God

  302. to provide.

  303. That's one road

  304. that's available to him.

  305. Or the other one

  306. is he can go

  307. to Moab.

  308. Moab,

  309. where evidently

  310. there is no famine.

  311. Perhaps the grass

  312. seems greener

  313. on the other side

  314. there.

  315. And what we need

  316. to understand

  317. in Elimelech's case,

  318. this is not

  319. a neutral choice.

  320. This isn't,

  321. well,

  322. the choices,

  323. I guess,

  324. that most of us have.

  325. Will we live in city A

  326. or city B?

  327. Will we take job A

  328. or job B?

  329. Unless there is

  330. sin involved,

  331. there's just a wisdom choice.

  332. It's neutral

  333. from that point of view.

  334. But for Elimelech

  335. to leave Bethlehem

  336. and to head to Moab

  337. is going to

  338. show his rejection

  339. of God,

  340. living in God's place,

  341. living among

  342. God's people,

  343. choosing

  344. not to live

  345. by faith,

  346. but to

  347. make his own way

  348. in life

  349. outside of

  350. God's promised land.

  351. And that's

  352. what he does.

  353. end of verse 2,

  354. they went to Moab

  355. and lived there.

  356. And we see

  357. the sadness

  358. that comes

  359. to the family

  360. of Elimelech.

  361. Well,

  362. first we're told

  363. in verse 3

  364. that he dies.

  365. Then,

  366. having gone there

  367. apparently temporarily,

  368. we see that

  369. Naomi

  370. settles down

  371. with her sons.

  372. Her sons

  373. marry

  374. Moabite women

  375. and after

  376. 10 years

  377. they also

  378. die too.

  379. Now,

  380. we need to remember

  381. as well

  382. that Moab

  383. was enemy

  384. territory.

  385. In Deuteronomy 7,

    Deuteronomy 7:3

  386. verse 3,

  387. the people of God

  388. were forbidden

  389. to marry,

  390. but yet here

  391. we find them

  392. settling down,

  393. establishing

  394. a family.

  395. Elimelech's name

  396. means

  397. my God

  398. is,

  399. God is my king,

  400. but his name

  401. does not reveal

  402. his heart,

  403. does it?

  404. As he chooses

  405. his own way

  406. apart from God.

  407. So,

  408. after that

  409. crossroads decision,

  410. after moving

  411. towards Moab,

  412. 10 years later,

  413. verse 5,

  414. we find

  415. Naomi's world

  416. falls apart.

  417. She has no husband,

  418. she has no sons,

  419. she finds herself

  420. relatively elderly,

  421. a stranger

  422. in a strange land,

  423. a widow

  424. without support

  425. or security.

  426. This man's

  427. journey away

  428. from God,

  429. from God's place,

  430. from God's people,

  431. has led

  432. this family

  433. nowhere,

  434. so it seems.

  435. Just to pause

  436. at this point

  437. and to think about

  438. this journey

  439. in relation

  440. to ours,

  441. I think it's

  442. helpful for us,

  443. a caution for us,

  444. when we think about

  445. Elimelech's

  446. decision making.

  447. You know,

  448. the book of Proverbs,

  449. probably a verse

  450. that the junior church

  451. have learned

  452. at some point,

  453. trust in the Lord

  454. with all your heart

  455. and lean not

  456. on your own understanding

  457. and all your ways

  458. acknowledge him

  459. and he will make

  460. your paths

  461. straight.

  462. Well,

  463. that's not the way

  464. of wisdom

  465. that Elimelech

  466. chooses.

  467. The Bible says

  468. that we are to walk

  469. by faith

  470. and not by sight,

  471. but Elimelech

  472. chooses to live

  473. by sight.

  474. I can see there's

  475. bread and more,

  476. so I'm heading there

  477. rather than trusting God.

  478. We thought this morning

  479. about Jesus

  480. using the book

  481. of Deuteronomy

  482. to resist temptation

  483. by saying man

  484. shall not live

  485. by bread alone

  486. but by every word

  487. that comes from

  488. the mouth of God,

  489. but Elimelech

  490. chooses bread alone.

  491. And it's so important

  492. for us to reflect

  493. on how we make

  494. our decisions.

  495. Are we making

  496. our decisions

  497. based on trust

  498. in our God?

  499. Are we humbly

  500. depending on him

  501. or are we

  502. like Elimelech

  503. walking by sight

  504. and not by faith?

  505. So his action

  506. stands as a warning

  507. for us,

  508. but there's also

  509. wonderful hope

  510. in this story

  511. because of the mercy

  512. of God,

  513. because of God's

  514. sovereign grace.

  515. Yes,

  516. there is judgment

  517. that comes on

  518. Elimelech's family

  519. just as judgment

  520. was falling on all Israel

  521. because of their

  522. turning away from God,

  523. but also there is blessing.

  524. Naomi,

  525. though she doesn't

  526. know it yet,

  527. will know much

  528. of God's grace

  529. and much of God's goodness

  530. and much of God's

  531. blessing,

  532. even though she is

  533. part of this foolish

  534. decision to walk

  535. away

  536. to Moab.

  537. And there is hope

  538. for us,

  539. I think,

  540. then when we pray

  541. for the prodigals

  542. in our own lives,

  543. for friends and family

  544. perhaps who at one time

  545. were in church

  546. professing faith

  547. but have now

  548. wandered away.

  549. It's so helpful

  550. for us to remember

  551. the sovereign grace

  552. and mercy

  553. of God

  554. and his loving desire

  555. to save and to redeem.

  556. When we think about

  557. how God is presented

  558. in this book,

  559. we see here is a God

  560. who is in control

  561. over the nations

  562. and God who will send

  563. judgment on a nation

  564. but God who also

  565. controls the family life

  566. of Naomi,

  567. turning it for good,

  568. ultimately to show

  569. redeeming love.

  570. And so we are encouraged

  571. to place our confidence

  572. in this God.

  573. This God who,

  574. in the midst of all the chaos,

  575. has a plan,

  576. a plan to establish

  577. Ruth's family

  578. and to establish

  579. David as king

  580. and to establish

  581. the line of King Jesus.

  582. Just before we move

  583. from these verses,

  584. let's think about

  585. the gospel journey

  586. and think about

  587. the journey of Jesus

  588. and see how it compares

  589. with Elimelech.

  590. So what do we see

  591. from Elimelech?

  592. We see him leaving

  593. his home,

  594. seeking his own blessing

  595. in disobedience

  596. to God.

  597. And I compare that

  598. with Jesus,

  599. leaving his home

  600. in glory

  601. for the blessing

  602. of his people,

  603. obeying God

  604. all the way

  605. to the cross.

  606. That the judgment

  607. that falls on Jesus

  608. becomes blessing

  609. for the people

  610. of God

  611. because of his

  612. faithfulness

  613. to God's word.

  614. So that was the road

  615. to nowhere.

  616. But then in verse 6

  617. to 17,

  618. we can think about

  619. the return journey,

  620. we can think about

  621. Naomi going home.

  622. And look at verse 6

  623. to see what prompts

  624. her decision to return.

  625. When Naomi heard

  626. in Moab

  627. that the Lord

  628. had come to the aid

  629. of his people

  630. by providing food

  631. for them,

  632. she and her

  633. daughters-in-law

  634. prepared to return

  635. home from there.

  636. So the Lord

  637. had come to the aid

  638. of his people.

  639. Bear in mind

  640. that this is

  641. in the time

  642. of the judges.

  643. This presumes

  644. that we're not told

  645. that the people of God

  646. have repented of sin,

  647. that they've looked

  648. to God for mercy,

  649. and God has shown mercy

  650. that is bread

  651. once again

  652. in the house

  653. of bread.

  654. And so,

  655. Naomi

  656. recognizes

  657. the Lord's providence

  658. in this,

  659. and so

  660. she and

  661. Orpah and Ruth

  662. begin

  663. the return journey

  664. home.

  665. Well, of course,

  666. it's home for Naomi,

  667. it's not home

  668. for Orpah

  669. and Ruth.

  670. And at some point

  671. on this journey,

  672. having encouraged

  673. them to come with her,

  674. there is clearly

  675. a point where

  676. she begins

  677. to ask questions

  678. of,

  679. well,

  680. what's really best

  681. for my daughters-in-law?

  682. How will I

  683. provide for them?

  684. What kind of welcome

  685. will they receive?

  686. Where are they most likely

  687. to find

  688. their security?

  689. And so,

  690. the journey

  691. pauses

  692. almost as quickly

  693. as it begins,

  694. and we come to another

  695. crossroads moment,

  696. this time for Orpah

  697. and for

  698. Ruth.

  699. Because Naomi,

  700. in verse 8,

  701. said to her two daughters-in-law,

  702. go back,

  703. each of you,

  704. to your mother's home.

  705. She believes

  706. that those two

  707. young women

  708. will have better

  709. prospects,

  710. greater security

  711. in Moab

  712. with their families

  713. in the place

  714. that they know,

  715. the culture

  716. that they are familiar

  717. with.

  718. Naomi says,

  719. I can't provide

  720. husbands for you,

  721. so I don't have

  722. any prospects

  723. to offer.

  724. Verse 9's

  725. an interesting one

  726. because it gives us

  727. an understanding

  728. of what is

  729. driving Naomi,

  730. what's Naomi's desire

  731. for Orpah

  732. and especially

  733. for Ruth.

  734. May the Lord

  735. grant that each

  736. of you will find

  737. rest in the home

  738. of another husband.

  739. A home

  740. for Ruth

  741. with a husband

  742. who will care

  743. for her.

  744. That's her desire.

  745. Now what Naomi

  746. doesn't understand

  747. is that's also

  748. God's desire

  749. and God has a much

  750. better plan

  751. than Naomi's plan.

  752. Naomi's plan

  753. is go back to Moab

  754. and see what you

  755. can find there.

  756. But God's going

  757. to bring Ruth

  758. back to Israel

  759. to meet Boaz.

  760. That God himself

  761. will provide

  762. a lasting home

  763. for Ruth

  764. among the people

  765. of God.

  766. But if we put

  767. ourselves in

  768. Orpah and Ruth's

  769. shoes for a moment,

  770. I imagine

  771. you like me

  772. think,

  773. well Naomi's words

  774. seem fairly logical.

  775. To leave

  776. for another country

  777. with no one

  778. to provide for you,

  779. with the possibility

  780. of not receiving

  781. a warm welcome,

  782. you can imagine

  783. it might make sense

  784. to go back.

  785. And so that's

  786. exactly what Orpah

  787. chooses.

  788. Verse 14

  789. or verse 13

  790. when Naomi

  791. says,

  792. it's,

  793. no my daughters

  794. it's more bitter

  795. for me than for you

  796. because the Lord's

  797. hand is turned

  798. against me.

  799. At this they

  800. wept aloud again

  801. then Orpah

  802. kissed her

  803. mother-in-law

  804. goodbye.

  805. So Orpah

  806. chooses

  807. to return

  808. to Moab

  809. and at this point

  810. she disappears

  811. from the pages

  812. of the Bible.

  813. We don't know.

  814. Did she get married?

  815. Did she find that husband

  816. and that security?

  817. Did she raise a family?

  818. Was she happy

  819. in her life?

  820. We don't know.

  821. But even if all those

  822. things were true,

  823. even if she went home

  824. and found

  825. a husband

  826. and had a family

  827. and had a

  828. long and satisfying

  829. life,

  830. she has still

  831. turned back

  832. from life

  833. with God

  834. in God's place.

  835. It seems

  836. that she has

  837. missed

  838. the ultimate

  839. and eternal

  840. blessing on offer

  841. to her

  842. in making

  843. that journey

  844. to identify

  845. herself

  846. among

  847. the people

  848. of God.

  849. It seems

  850. that perhaps

  851. Naomi has

  852. lost sight

  853. of the reality

  854. that the greatest

  855. thing anyone

  856. can have.

  857. The greatest

  858. thing that Naomi

  859. could offer

  860. her daughters-in-law

  861. was an invitation

  862. to become part

  863. of the people

  864. of God,

  865. to know God

  866. and to know

  867. his love,

  868. to enjoy

  869. fellowship

  870. with the people

  871. of God.

  872. There is no

  873. question that

  874. Naomi loved

  875. Orpah

  876. as she loved

  877. Ruth,

  878. but it seemed

  879. like she aims

  880. too low

  881. in her aspiration

  882. and desire

  883. for her daughter-in-law.

  884. To have a

  885. happy marriage

  886. and a happy

  887. family without

  888. God

  889. is to miss

  890. the fullness

  891. that God

  892. has

  893. for any

  894. of us.

  895. So Orpah

  896. chooses

  897. at this moment

  898. of decision

  899. to go home,

  900. but what does it

  901. say about Ruth?

  902. In verse 14

  903. we discover

  904. that Ruth

  905. clung to her

  906. and that's a

  907. significant word

  908. because

  909. it's the same

  910. word that

  911. appears in

  912. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  913. 2 and

  914. verse 24.

  915. It's a marriage

  916. word speaking

  917. about the

  918. marriage of

  919. Adam and

  920. Eve as a

  921. pattern for

  922. all marriages.

  923. That's why a

  924. man leaves

  925. his father and

  926. mother and

  927. is united

  928. to his wife

  929. and they

  930. become one

  931. flesh.

  932. There's so

  933. much covenant

  934. commitment

  935. language from

  936. Ruth and that

  937. continues in

  938. her speech

  939. in verse 16.

  940. Don't urge me

  941. to leave you

  942. or to turn

  943. back from you.

  944. Where you go,

  945. I will go.

  946. Where you stay,

  947. I will stay,

  948. your people

  949. will be my

  950. people and

  951. your God

  952. my God.

  953. Words

  954. perhaps we

  955. hear fairly

  956. regularly at

  957. weddings.

  958. Even the

  959. pattern makes

  960. us think of

  961. for better,

  962. for worse,

  963. for richer,

  964. for poorer,

  965. in sickness and

  966. health,

  967. till death do

  968. us part.

  969. That's the

  970. idea behind

  971. Ruth's words.

  972. She is

  973. committing to

  974. her mother-in-law

  975. in undying

  976. love and

  977. not just

  978. committing

  979. herself to

  980. Naomi,

  981. but more

  982. significantly

  983. committing

  984. herself to

  985. Naomi's

  986. God.

  987. Verse 17,

  988. May the

  989. Lord deal

  990. with me,

  991. be it ever

  992. so severely,

  993. if even

  994. death

  995. separates you

  996. and me.

  997. Having said,

  998. your God

  999. will be my

  1000. God,

  1001. she then

  1002. swears an

  1003. oath before

  1004. the Lord,

  1005. using the

  1006. covenant

  1007. name of

  1008. God,

  1009. as her

  1010. witness that

  1011. she will

  1012. remain with

  1013. Naomi,

  1014. that the

  1015. people of

  1016. God are

  1017. her people.

  1018. Now what

  1019. can we learn

  1020. from this

  1021. leg of the

  1022. journey?

  1023. Let's think

  1024. some more

  1025. about God's

  1026. sovereign grace,

  1027. let's think

  1028. about what's

  1029. happening in

  1030. Israel.

  1031. God in

  1032. his mercy

  1033. is restoring

  1034. wayward

  1035. Israel,

  1036. there's bread

  1037. and not

  1038. famine because

  1039. of God's

  1040. mercy.

  1041. Naomi is

  1042. being restored

  1043. to the

  1044. people of

  1045. God by

  1046. the mercy

  1047. of God.

  1048. For God's

  1049. people,

  1050. judgment is

  1051. not and

  1052. will never

  1053. be God's

  1054. last word.

  1055. And we

  1056. discover too

  1057. that God's

  1058. grace comes

  1059. to an

  1060. outsider,

  1061. to a

  1062. Moabite

  1063. woman.

  1064. To many

  1065. within Israel,

  1066. this would be

  1067. shocking.

  1068. God's

  1069. promise.

  1070. But it's

  1071. a reminder

  1072. to us

  1073. that God

  1074. loves to

  1075. save.

  1076. That God's

  1077. plan has

  1078. always been

  1079. a redemption

  1080. that takes

  1081. in the

  1082. nations,

  1083. surprising

  1084. people,

  1085. surprising

  1086. places.

  1087. And again,

  1088. it's an

  1089. encouragement to

  1090. us not to

  1091. give up on

  1092. people, not

  1093. to give up

  1094. on mission.

  1095. God's arm

  1096. is not short

  1097. that he

  1098. cannot save.

  1099. God's

  1100. faith.

  1101. It reminds

  1102. us

  1103. encouragingly,

  1104. I think,

  1105. that God

  1106. works through

  1107. weak faith.

  1108. Because how

  1109. is it that

  1110. Ruth knows

  1111. about the

  1112. God of

  1113. Israel?

  1114. How does

  1115. she know

  1116. about this

  1117. covenant

  1118. keeping

  1119. God?

  1120. Well,

  1121. surely it's

  1122. through her

  1123. mother-in-law,

  1124. Naomi.

  1125. Naomi's

  1126. faith is

  1127. weak.

  1128. She is,

  1129. at the very

  1130. least,

  1131. wrestling with

  1132. a sense

  1133. of bitterness

  1134. towards God,

  1135. struggling to

  1136. see God's

  1137. kindness at

  1138. any stage.

  1139. She has

  1140. walked away

  1141. from the

  1142. promised land,

  1143. but still,

  1144. Naomi's

  1145. witness is

  1146. used for

  1147. Ruth's

  1148. salvation.

  1149. I am

  1150. sure all

  1151. of us,

  1152. when it

  1153. comes to

  1154. our witness,

  1155. feel a

  1156. sense of

  1157. our own

  1158. weakness

  1159. and inadequacy,

  1160. feel that

  1161. there are

  1162. times when

  1163. we fail

  1164. and mess

  1165. up.

  1166. Well,

  1167. he is

  1168. encouragement

  1169. that God

  1170. works through

  1171. weak people

  1172. so that he

  1173. gets the

  1174. glory,

  1175. as he

  1176. does in

  1177. Ruth's

  1178. story.

  1179. Ruth also

  1180. shows us

  1181. something of

  1182. what faith

  1183. involves,

  1184. doesn't she?

  1185. As Ruth

  1186. begins this

  1187. journey,

  1188. this

  1189. mark by

  1190. suffering

  1191. and sacrifice,

  1192. this is a

  1193. journey of

  1194. faith that

  1195. is costly

  1196. to her,

  1197. leaving all

  1198. that she

  1199. knows

  1200. behind,

  1201. moving

  1202. towards a

  1203. very

  1204. uncertain

  1205. future.

  1206. But she

  1207. does it

  1208. because she

  1209. has committed

  1210. herself to

  1211. God.

  1212. Jesus

  1213. said,

  1214. to follow

  1215. him is

  1216. to carry

  1217. a cross.

  1218. The

  1219. discipleship

  1220. is not

  1221. cheap and

  1222. easy,

  1223. it is

  1224. costly.

  1225. perhaps we

  1226. have known

  1227. something of

  1228. that mockery

  1229. or sense

  1230. of isolation

  1231. from people

  1232. because of

  1233. our faith.

  1234. And we

  1235. certainly know

  1236. that some of

  1237. our brothers

  1238. and sisters

  1239. in Christ

  1240. are imprisoned,

  1241. rejected by

  1242. their families,

  1243. will be

  1244. facing death

  1245. today because

  1246. they have

  1247. chosen to

  1248. make God

  1249. their God.

  1250. God

  1251. and again

  1252. when we

  1253. put that

  1254. into the

  1255. story of

  1256. the gospel,

  1257. we are

  1258. following

  1259. Jesus who

  1260. walked the

  1261. way of the

  1262. cross,

  1263. who was

  1264. for us

  1265. the suffering

  1266. servant,

  1267. making that

  1268. journey of

  1269. humiliation

  1270. for the sake

  1271. of his

  1272. people.

  1273. And as

  1274. we seek

  1275. to live

  1276. by faith

  1277. in him,

  1278. he tells

  1279. us that

  1280. he both

  1281. goes before

  1282. us and

  1283. is with

  1284. us,

  1285. giving us

  1286. strength,

  1287. sending us

  1288. the spirit

  1289. for our

  1290. journeys

  1291. of faith.

  1292. Well,

  1293. let's look

  1294. finally at

  1295. a journey's

  1296. end and

  1297. what we

  1298. can describe

  1299. as a

  1300. bitter

  1301. return.

  1302. I want

  1303. to notice

  1304. something

  1305. that perhaps

  1306. seems awkward

  1307. or even

  1308. painful

  1309. in our

  1310. text.

  1311. So we

  1312. read verses

  1313. 16 and

  1314. 17,

  1315. those wonderful

  1316. lovely words

  1317. of Ruth.

  1318. She just

  1319. poured out

  1320. her heart

  1321. to Naomi

  1322. in this

  1323. great expression

  1324. of undying

  1325. loyalty and

  1326. love.

  1327. These words

  1328. that are used

  1329. at weddings,

  1330. you could

  1331. easily imagine

  1332. them being

  1333. turned into

  1334. a song

  1335. or a

  1336. poem.

  1337. But how

  1338. does Naomi

  1339. respond?

  1340. In our

  1341. NIV it

  1342. says,

  1343. when Naomi

  1344. realized that

  1345. Ruth was

  1346. determined to

  1347. go with

  1348. her,

  1349. she stopped

  1350. urging her.

  1351. That could

  1352. read,

  1353. she was

  1354. silent.

  1355. Nothing to

  1356. say in

  1357. response.

  1358. And we

  1359. see more

  1360. of that

  1361. pain that

  1362. Ruth might

  1363. well have

  1364. experienced

  1365. when Naomi

  1366. begins to

  1367. share with

  1368. the women

  1369. of the

  1370. village.

  1371. Don't call

  1372. me Naomi,

  1373. Naomi means

  1374. pleasant.

  1375. Call me

  1376. Mara,

  1377. which means

  1378. bitter,

  1379. because the

  1380. Almighty has

  1381. made my

  1382. life very

  1383. bitter.

  1384. I went

  1385. away full,

  1386. but the

  1387. Lord has

  1388. brought me

  1389. back empty.

  1390. Ruth's

  1391. standing right

  1392. there.

  1393. God's

  1394. brought me

  1395. back empty.

  1396. There's

  1397. certainly no

  1398. sense in

  1399. Naomi's

  1400. word that

  1401. she looks

  1402. on her

  1403. daughter-in-law

  1404. as a

  1405. source of

  1406. comfort and

  1407. blessing,

  1408. a mercy

  1409. that she

  1410. went with

  1411. her on

  1412. this

  1413. journey.

  1414. Naomi

  1415. says,

  1416. well,

  1417. my name

  1418. is pleasant,

  1419. but that's

  1420. not my

  1421. experience.

  1422. My

  1423. experience

  1424. at God's

  1425. hand is

  1426. one of

  1427. bitterness.

  1428. Verse 21,

  1429. the Lord

  1430. has

  1431. afflicted

  1432. me or

  1433. the Lord

  1434. has

  1435. testified

  1436. against

  1437. me.

  1438. I've

  1439. been

  1440. brought

  1441. into

  1442. the

  1443. Lord's

  1444. courtroom

  1445. and

  1446. the

  1447. judgment

  1448. has

  1449. come

  1450. and

  1451. I'm

  1452. under

  1453. God's

  1454. hand.

  1455. I want

  1456. us again

  1457. to just

  1458. see a

  1459. word of

  1460. caution

  1461. here.

  1462. The

  1463. danger

  1464. of

  1465. bitterness

  1466. in our

  1467. lives.

  1468. That

  1469. bitterness

  1470. can

  1471. mean we

  1472. miss

  1473. the

  1474. blessings,

  1475. the

  1476. kindness

  1477. that

  1478. God

  1479. shows.

  1480. So what's

  1481. clear in

  1482. this whole

  1483. chapter is

  1484. that Naomi

  1485. absolutely

  1486. believes in

  1487. a God

  1488. who is

  1489. sovereign,

  1490. who is

  1491. in

  1492. control,

  1493. but all

  1494. she can

  1495. see is

  1496. his

  1497. judgment.

  1498. And at

  1499. this stage

  1500. in her

  1501. life,

  1502. she's

  1503. unable to

  1504. see his

  1505. acts of

  1506. kindness

  1507. and

  1508. mercy.

  1509. And

  1510. perhaps we

  1511. can relate

  1512. to that.

  1513. Perhaps

  1514. when

  1515. suffering

  1516. comes,

  1517. when trauma

  1518. comes,

  1519. when difficulties

  1520. come,

  1521. it can be

  1522. really hard

  1523. to see any

  1524. good purpose

  1525. in what we

  1526. are experiencing.

  1527. Perhaps we

  1528. can feel the

  1529. weight of

  1530. God's hand

  1531. being against

  1532. us.

  1533. Perhaps we

  1534. have a

  1535. sense of

  1536. God being

  1537. absent in

  1538. this

  1539. situation.

  1540. But to

  1541. just stop

  1542. and reflect

  1543. on Ruth

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  1544. chapter 1

  1545. and on

  1546. Naomi's

  1547. journey,

  1548. we

  1549. recognize

  1550. that she

  1551. has been

  1552. gifted with

  1553. a daughter-in-law

  1554. of a

  1555. beautiful

  1556. and a

  1557. bold

  1558. faith.

  1559. She has

  1560. been shown

  1561. mercy in

  1562. that she's

  1563. returning to

  1564. a place

  1565. where there

  1566. is bread

  1567. and not

  1568. famine.

  1569. That she

  1570. will know

  1571. grace beyond

  1572. judgment.

  1573. She is

  1574. being welcomed

  1575. back to

  1576. her community

  1577. and ultimately

  1578. she's going to

  1579. see her family

  1580. become part of

  1581. that great

  1582. story of

  1583. God's

  1584. redeeming

  1585. love for

  1586. the world.

  1587. And so

  1588. even in

  1589. chapter 1

  1590. there are

  1591. reminders

  1592. to us.

  1593. Even in

  1594. the hardship,

  1595. even when

  1596. life seems

  1597. bitter and

  1598. against us,

  1599. we are,

  1600. as people of

  1601. faith,

  1602. keep our

  1603. eyes open

  1604. for God's

  1605. kindness

  1606. because his

  1607. mercies are

  1608. new every

  1609. morning.

  1610. Let's

  1611. finish with

  1612. this.

  1613. Naomi,

  1614. at this

  1615. stage,

  1616. feels that

  1617. God is

  1618. against her,

  1619. that God's

  1620. hand is

  1621. against her.

  1622. God's

  1623. God's

  1624. God's

  1625. God's

  1626. question of

  1627. is God

  1628. for me

  1629. or against

  1630. me?

  1631. Whatever day,

  1632. whatever part of

  1633. our journey of

  1634. faith.

  1635. Again, we

  1636. need the

  1637. gospel and

  1638. the gospel

  1639. journey to

  1640. help us to

  1641. answer that.

  1642. To think

  1643. about the

  1644. loving

  1645. commitment of

  1646. our God

  1647. towards us,

  1648. that God

  1649. sent his

  1650. son Jesus,

  1651. and Jesus

  1652. the son

  1653. willingly

  1654. left his

  1655. home in

  1656. glory to

  1657. become one

  1658. of us and

  1659. to live here

  1660. to be God

  1661. with us.

  1662. And we need

  1663. to see Jesus

  1664. and not just

  1665. making that

  1666. journey to

  1667. earth,

  1668. but making

  1669. that journey

  1670. to earth so

  1671. he could make

  1672. that journey

  1673. to the cross,

  1674. taking judgment

  1675. for sin,

  1676. for our sin,

  1677. for the sake

  1678. of his people,

  1679. dying so we

  1680. might live,

  1681. knowing condemnation

  1682. so we might be

  1683. forgiven and

  1684. reconciled.

  1685. Jesus is the

  1686. one who came

  1687. as our

  1688. Emmanuel,

  1689. came as

  1690. God with

  1691. us,

  1692. totally committed

  1693. to us in

  1694. covenant love,

  1695. in undying

  1696. love.

  1697. And it's as we

  1698. understand the

  1699. gospel and as

  1700. our faith is in

  1701. Jesus that we

  1702. can say with

  1703. confidence that

  1704. nothing can

  1705. separate us from

  1706. the love of

  1707. God.

  1708. It's as we

  1709. come to know

  1710. the God of

  1711. redeeming love

  1712. that we are

  1713. able to

  1714. trust that

  1715. all things

  1716. will in

  1717. God's hands

  1718. and in God's

  1719. time work

  1720. together for

  1721. his glory

  1722. and for our

  1723. good.

  1724. Let's pray

  1725. to our God

  1726. together.

  1727. Father God,

  1728. we thank you

  1729. for the book

  1730. of Ruth and

  1731. we thank you

  1732. for what it

  1733. can teach

  1734. us of

  1735. your sovereign

  1736. grace and

  1737. mercy,

  1738. that you are

  1739. able to

  1740. work beyond

  1741. sin and

  1742. beyond bad

  1743. decisions.

  1744. You are able

  1745. to work in a

  1746. way that

  1747. highlights your

  1748. grace and

  1749. gains you the

  1750. glory that you

  1751. deserve.

  1752. We thank you

  1753. that your

  1754. desire is to

  1755. redeem a

  1756. people for

  1757. yourself,

  1758. that Jesus

  1759. came to

  1760. carry out

  1761. that great

  1762. work of

  1763. redemption.

  1764. And Lord,

  1765. we thank you

  1766. for where the

  1767. story of Ruth

  1768. fits into

  1769. that storyline,

  1770. that through

  1771. this family

  1772. would come

  1773. King David

  1774. and all those

  1775. promises of

  1776. an eternal

  1777. king who

  1778. would rule

  1779. and reign in

  1780. righteousness

  1781. forever,

  1782. would find

  1783. their fulfillment

  1784. in King

  1785. Jesus.

  1786. Please help

  1787. us to be

  1788. those who

  1789. would walk

  1790. by faith

  1791. and not

  1792. by sight.

  1793. Please help

  1794. us to be

  1795. those who

  1796. would count

  1797. our blessings,

  1798. that even in

  1799. the hardships

  1800. that we face,

  1801. that we would

  1802. be able to

  1803. see glimpses

  1804. of your

  1805. mercy and

  1806. your sustaining

  1807. grace.

  1808. Lord, we

  1809. pray to

  1810. have that

  1811. strong

  1812. sacrificial

  1813. faith that

  1814. Ruth had,

  1815. determining at

  1816. all costs

  1817. that you

  1818. would be

  1819. our God

  1820. and that

  1821. your people

  1822. would be

  1823. our people.

  1824. So please

  1825. help us,

  1826. please answer

  1827. our prayers,

  1828. we ask in

  1829. Jesus' name.

  1830. Amen.
