  1. Father, we confess that sometimes we are afraid of your word, and we don't maybe even want to acknowledge it, but we're afraid of it.

  2. And sometimes, Father, we take great delight, glee, in your word because we think it gives us powers that it doesn't.

  3. Because we want power, we want to be the center.

  4. So, Father, you know the true state of our hearts, and you know the true state of our lives.

  5. And we know that you love us, that Jesus is our Savior and Lord for all who put their faith and trust in him.

  6. And so we ask that the Holy Spirit would fall with might and power and deep conviction as we open your word.

  7. Father, bring your word to the very center of who we are.

  8. And this we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. Amen.

  11. So, one of the things, if you read any book on how to preach or anything like that, one of the things they talk about in preaching is that you have to begin your sermon pretty well right away with something that's going to grab people.

  12. Like, within the first minute, you need to do something to grab people's attention and grant them a type of either tension or curiosity to enter into the sermon.

  13. And today, all I have to do is this.

  14. And I know I meant it to be funny, but I mean, it's a very serious issue, right, in terms of Canada.

  15. All I have to do is say, today, you turn in your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 5, verses 22, and the opening sentence is,

    Ephesians 5:22

  16. wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord.

  17. And instantly, I've got curiosity.

  18. Instantly, I've got tension effortlessly right off the bat.

  19. So, here's the thing.

  20. I mean, we all laughed, and I meant to get a bit of a laugh, but it's very serious.

  21. The fact of the matter is, is that you can just imagine what it would be like if on Monday, if those of you who work somewhere,

  22. if you got all your co-workers together and said you'd like to share this text with them,

  23. if I was to gather all the people in the coffee shop, and it wouldn't matter if it was a hipster coffee shop,

  24. Tim Hortons, sort of the opposite end of hipster, or Starbucks to hipsters, the opposite end of hipster as well,

  25. second cup, who goes to second cup, and if you're just to go and gather people up and read this text,

  26. there'd be all sorts of tension in the room.

  27. In fact, for many people, for many women in particular, but often for men,

  28. there'd be actually a type of physical pain and shock that such a text would be read.

  29. Like, there'd be actual shock and maybe pain and fear that such a text would be read.

  30. And if they didn't do just the normal Canadian thing, saying whatever and trying to be polite,

  31. but if they actually engaged with you, I mean, amongst other things, people would say to me,

  32. George, don't you think a text like this is unbelievably dangerous?

  33. Like, don't you think this text will lead to abuse?

  34. In fact, some people would say, George, if people believe this text, women will die.

  35. In fact, we'll be lucky if all that happens is that they end up in the emergency room,

  36. because women will die if you have a text like this and try to get people to believe it.

  37. That it's shocking that in an age when women can be fighters, pilots, and run nations,

  38. and run billion, multi-billion dollar corporations,

  39. that in an age like that, this, that a text like this would even be read without being read

  40. and then being mocked or saying that it should be discarded.

  41. And that's basically how most Canadians and most North Americans would view the text.

  42. In fact, probably, especially if I was to do it in a coffee shop where I was familiar,

  43. one of the questions would ask me is this.

  44. They'd probably say, George, do you believe this?

  45. And it would be like that, do you believe this?

  46. Like, surely you don't believe this.

  47. And if I said I did, there'd be, whoa, whoa.

  48. Right? That's the world we live in.

  49. That's the world we live in.

  50. So, what are we going to do with all of this?

  51. Well, what I'm going to do is I'm going to begin by telling you

  52. what many, many Christians in North America do about a text like this.

  53. And they're well-meaning, and I might also, I might in fact be describing some of you here in this room.

  54. Well-meaning people, well-meaning Christians, very conscious of how this text is viewed in the world.

  55. And so, how do they do?

  56. What they do is they do this.

  57. They go, in fact, many people who, many Canadian Christians would even right off the bat say,

  58. whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

  59. Time out, George.

  60. You didn't begin the text in the right spot.

  61. Like, what on earth are you doing?

  62. Like, you should have begun not with verse 22, where it says, wives, submit to your husbands.

  63. You should have begun with verse 21, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

  64. And what would happen in many Christian churches, many pulpits, including many evangelical and charismatic churches,

  65. is they would do something like this.

  66. They would say, well, George, verse 21 is before verse 22.

  67. And verse 21 gives the general principle about how Christians are to relate to each other.

  68. And the general way that Christians are to relate to each other is that they're to learn how to submit to one another.

  69. And so, therefore, that's what governs this text.

  70. That's the big idea, rather than just picking on husbands and wives.

  71. And then they would say something like this.

  72. They'd say, but because you see what's going on, is there some type of local problem that's going on in Ephesus?

  73. And then they'll begin to tell you the local problem that was going on in Ephesus.

  74. And then they'd say, so given that there's this local problem going on in Ephesus,

  75. and Paul is giving advice for a very particular problem,

  76. therefore what we need to do now here in Ottawa in 2019 is we need to understand that this is the text that everybody has to follow.

  77. And the other text, 22 to 33, is just talking about a local thing which no longer applies.

  78. Now, here's the thing. It's very, very well-meaning.

  79. But the problem is there is no local situation in Ephesus like what they're talking about.

  80. Like it doesn't exist.

  81. I don't want to offend some of you, and some of you might come up and give me some books.

  82. And in the books show me how archaeologists say this.

  83. But fundamentally, there is no particular situation like this that gets you around the problem of the text.

  84. The second thing is that at the level of the original language,

  85. and it's shown in most modern Bible translations,

  86. the reason that whole new section begins at verse 22 is because verses 15 to 21 is one sentence in Greek.

  87. It's not as if it's a series.

  88. In English Bibles, because English doesn't usually work in that way,

  89. that you can have such long sentences.

  90. So what happens is there's a whole lot of sentences,

  91. and they'll make this look like the beginning of a new sentence,

  92. and then they'll want to put this.

  93. But at the original language, 15 to 21 is one long sentence.

  94. And in fact, actually, I can tell you another thing.

  95. Sorry, time out.

  96. Geek moment for grammar nerds.

  97. Okay.

  98. In that long sentence, the submitting to one another in Christ,

  99. it's a third of three participles, and there's a governing noun, and it's verse 18.

  100. So there's the governing noun, and then three instances of what the governing verb, and blah, blah.

  101. In other words, 21 is really connected to that sentence,

  102. and it's not a brand new sentence that should begin a new paragraph.

  103. End of grammar geek moment.

  104. The other problem with the well-meaning way to try to get around the text,

  105. because you see, really what happens is they use verse 21 to deconstruct or make verses 20.

  106. Another way to put it is they use 21 to deconstruct verses 22 to 33,

  107. or a better way to put it is they use verse 21 to make verses 22 to 33 disappear.

  108. But the problem is that Paul doesn't make reference to, let's say, something like head coverings,

  109. which you might wonder then if it's referring to something a bit more local.

  110. The fact of the matter is that Paul grounds all of his argument in the fact that Jesus died for sinners,

  111. that Jesus is Savior and Lord, and the book of Genesis chapter 2, which is in creation.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  112. In other words, things which aren't local but are, in fact, universal and fundamental to the Christian faith.

  113. So it's a well-meaning attempt to deal with it, but it's not right.

  114. And so for some of you, your answer to all that will be, ouch.

  115. George, you just made the problem worse.

  116. You haven't helped the problem at all.

  117. You have made it worse.

  118. You're saying that this text is something universal that applies to husbands and wives in Ottawa in 2019.

  119. So here's my first brief point.

  120. And this is going to make you even more worried about me, but I thought I'd get it right out.

  121. I think the Bible's teaching on marriage is wise.

  122. This is obviously not the only text on marriage in the Bible.

  123. I'm not going to try to pretend it is, but I think this teaching on marriage is very wise when it's properly understood.

  124. And I know there's lots of fear and anxiety around the text, but I think we've got to walk towards it because the teaching is wise.

  125. And I hope by your prayers that I can show you that, in fact, it is very wise for Christians to understand and to walk towards.

  126. So let's start walking towards it.

  127. Let's get back to our text.

  128. So Ephesians chapter 5, verses 22 to 24.

    Ephesians 5:22–24

  129. The way the text is structured is the first three verses talk to wives.

  130. Then I think it's eight verses that talk to husbands.

  131. And then there's a concluding verse that talks to husbands and wives together.

  132. Maybe it's three and nine and one.

  133. I can't remember just off the top.

  134. But you can see there's almost three times more time he spends talking to husbands than there will be to wives.

  135. But let's look at what it says here.

  136. Verse 22, wives, submit to your own husbands.

  137. Another translation is, be subject to your own husbands as to the Lord.

  138. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its savior.

  139. Now, as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in all things to their husbands.

  140. So you can see my first point that I mentioned a little bit earlier, that the fact the text is going to ground it not in something that we might say,

  141. that sounds like it's a bit of a unique issue, but something very, very fundamental.

  142. Christ is the head of the church, that Christ is the savior, that the church, the real church, the invisible church, is his body.

  143. It's grounded in something which is not local, but in fact something which is universal.

  144. And the fact of the matter is, is submit is the word in the original language.

  145. It's not that we can sort of do around it.

  146. It's important now as we started to try to gently look into this text, is that it doesn't say wives submit to men.

  147. It doesn't say wives submit to, yeah, it doesn't say wives submit to men.

  148. It says wives submit to your own husbands.

  149. In other words, this is a text that Louise would have to read,

  150. understanding that it's referring to how she relates to me,

  151. and not how she relates to other men.

  152. It's just to her own husband.

  153. Just as, in a moment, it's a text that will be referring to me

  154. in terms of how I relate to my wife, Louise, not to all other women.

  155. But it's still very, very stark and very, very shocking in Canada.

  156. In fact, some of you might say, many Canadians would say in the coffee shop

  157. that I've actually made it worse.

  158. Once again, there's no out and dodge around the word submit.

  159. It says what it says, and it's very stark.

  160. It's a strong exhortation repeated twice.

  161. Wives submit to your own husbands.

  162. So wives, in verse 24, should submit in all things to their husbands.

  163. The text actually makes it worse.

  164. Now, it looks as if I've made it worse.

  165. But actually, it's only when we actually start to really look at the text

  166. that we start to notice that the text, that Paul, that the Bible does something

  167. which is unbelievably odd.

  168. And it's such an odd thing that happens.

  169. And let's be frank.

  170. There is a problem with patriarchy.

  171. There is a problem with patriarchy.

  172. It's not an imagined problem.

  173. It might not be as extensive as some people would say, but it's a problem.

  174. And many times, Christians, especially those who are known as evangelicals,

  175. one of the great weaknesses of their thinking is that they talk as if patriarchy is not ever a problem,

  176. just as they'll talk as if social class isn't a problem or racism isn't a problem.

  177. They refuse.

  178. We refuse to acknowledge that these are real things, real issues, real problems,

  179. prejudice, discrimination, racism, anti-Semitism, patriarchy.

  180. These are real problems in the world, and they have real impacts on how we read the Bible without realizing it.

  181. And sometimes when Christians are defending the Bible, what they don't realize is they're not actually defending the Bible.

  182. They're defending patriarchy, and they shouldn't.

  183. And they shouldn't.

  184. We shouldn't.

  185. The Bible is going to do something unbelievably odd.

  186. It's so odd that what happens is we fill in something with a patriarchal perspective that's actually not in the Bible.

  187. Look what happens next.

  188. So here it is, verse 24.

  189. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husband.

  190. What happens next?

  191. Look at what it says.

  192. We'll read all of them, and then I'll point out what's so odd about it.

  193. Husbands, love your wives.

  194. Verse 25.

  195. Husbands, love your wives.

  196. It's just the plural, right?

  197. It's not saying that husbands have more than one wife, right?

  198. So, George, love your wife as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water and the word,

  199. so that he might present the church to himself in splendor without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

  200. And notice this big thing.

  201. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

  202. It's a way of very powerfully saying that Jesus loves you and me to the point of dying on the cross.

  203. He didn't die on the cross because of something he had done.

  204. He didn't do it because it was some type of extreme sport and he wanted to win the gold medal.

  205. No, he saw your need and mine, and so out of love for you and me, he comes and dies upon the cross for you and me.

  206. So here's the thing which most of us don't notice.

  207. Okay?

  208. Normally, this is what we would expect.

  209. Louise, submit to George in all things.

  210. George, these are the types of things you should say.

  211. These are the types of things you can't say.

  212. These are the types of limits you can do.

  213. This is the type of way that, you know, these are the benchmarks.

  214. Is any of that there?

  215. None.

  216. You know what's missing in this text?

  217. The man is not given any power to command.

  218. Zero.

  219. That's what we would expect.

  220. Many Christian commentators say, well, it's assumed.

  221. And so they fill it in with patriarchy.

  222. No.

  223. It's not assumed.

  224. How do I know it's not assumed?

  225. Well, one of the things is actually a proper use of verse 21.

  226. Because in verse 21, right?

  227. It's talking about you're filled with the Holy Spirit and filled in the Holy Spirit.

  228. And if you're filled in the Holy Spirit, there's a certain way of talking with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.

  229. Rejoicing in making melody in your heart in all times.

  230. You know, there's a, I can't remember what the second one is, which is terrible.

  231. I should remember it, but I'm on a roll.

  232. And then there's a third one, submitting to one another.

  233. And does the text there say to other people, okay, George has to submit to everybody.

  234. So everybody else, this is how you can boss George around.

  235. It's not there.

  236. It's the same word.

  237. Why would you assume it's there in verse 25 when you assume it's not there in verse 21?

  238. You can't.

  239. Well, then people say, well, George, that makes no sense.

  240. Exactly.

  241. From the world's point of view, which rates everything with power.

  242. It makes no sense.

  243. But what does Jesus do?

  244. What is the Bible doing?

  245. The Bible is not saying this is how power works.

  246. So this is how you have to work.

  247. No.

  248. What does the Bible point us to?

  249. The gospel.

  250. How are we to understand marriage?

  251. Understanding the gospel.

  252. How is a husband to understand how to relate to his wife?

  253. Think about the gospel.

  254. How is the wife to understand how to think about her husband?

  255. Think about the gospel.

  256. Not think about power.

  257. Think about the gospel.

  258. And so here's the shocking thing.

  259. What you would expect normally if this was written,

  260. what, Louise, submit in all things.

  261. George, now we're expecting,

  262. you're going to say something about command and said,

  263. what does Jesus say to me?

  264. What does the Bible say?

  265. George, love your wife to the point of being willing to die for her.

  266. And not just die so she can be left in poverty and sadness.

  267. The point is that you are to understand that God's will for her is that she will be holy

  268. and she will be beautiful and she will be whole and she will be complete.

  269. And you are willing to die to your own.

  270. You have to be willing.

  271. You are exhorted, George, to die to your own will in such a way

  272. that this work of God in her will work more and more and more and more and more.

  273. And that, George, is your task.

  274. Your task, George, is not how to boss her around.

  275. Your task, if you choose to accept it,

  276. your task, mission impossible reference, sorry,

  277. your task is to be willing to die for your wife,

  278. die to your own agendas,

  279. die to all of these things and be willing to die for her.

  280. Now, I'm going to say a little bit more about it,

  281. but I want to show the big point about all of this.

  282. So if I lose you for the rest of the sermon, this is the big point.

  283. The Bible gives wise exhortations in light of the true nature of love,

  284. the true problem of sin,

  285. and the enduring truth of the gospel.

  286. That's the way to understand this text.

  287. Hopefully I have the time and I'll be able to show you

  288. that that's, in fact, what's going on.

  289. That the Bible gives wise exhortations,

  290. not, it doesn't, the Bible doesn't hit the women.

  291. It's that the, it's giving wise exhortations in light

  292. of what all of us know is the true nature of love.

  293. It's giving wise exhortations in light of what we all know

  294. about the true problem of sin.

  295. And what the world doesn't know, but we know if we're Christians,

  296. it's giving wise exhortations in light of the enduring truth of the gospel.

  297. And that's what Paul is doing here in chapter 5, verses 22 to 24.

  298. So how do I say this?

  299. What is the nature of love?

  300. We think about it for a second.

  301. When we're in deep love with somebody,

  302. the first time when we fall really in love with another person,

  303. and that love that we have for another person,

  304. it seems like it's reciprocated.

  305. I will give an example from the, so I was in love with Louise,

  306. and, you know, we go on a date or two,

  307. and then finally I get over, invited over to her house for her apartment.

  308. She was sharing an apartment with some other people.

  309. I get over, I get invited over for a meal and for tea,

  310. and I, we talk, and at the time she lived in an apartment

  311. right near James Street in Bronson.

  312. I lived out at Bank and Hunt Club.

  313. Those of you in Ottawa, that's a long way away.

  314. And we stopped talking at 2.30 in the morning.

  315. It was January.

  316. It was minus 25.

  317. Buses had stopped.

  318. Uber hadn't been invented.

  319. Taxis were for rich people.

  320. I had to walk home.

  321. 2.30 in the morning.

  322. Bronson and James to Bank and Hunt Club.

  323. Now let me ask you this question.

  324. Did I walk there along those streets thinking,

  325. how dare she keep me talking so late?

  326. This is terrible.

  327. She had no concern for me and my needs

  328. that I had to walk for so long in such a...

  329. No!

  330. I thought I was the luckiest guy in the world.

  331. I thought I was the luckiest guy in the world.

  332. Quite a few years ago in this congregation,

  333. there was a man who used to come here all the time.

  334. And he was a really, really nice guy.

  335. Loved wine.

  336. Loved good food.

  337. And he was plump.

  338. And one day,

  339. I come into a meeting with him

  340. and he looked a bit flushed.

  341. A bit pink.

  342. And I asked him what he'd done.

  343. He said,

  344. I just came from jogging.

  345. I said,

  346. you went jogging?

  347. That's bad people skills, by the way.

  348. I shouldn't have said,

  349. you went jogging?

  350. I should have said,

  351. way to go!

  352. Or something like that.

  353. But I lost it.

  354. Because if you were to pick everybody in the church

  355. as to who's going to go for a jog,

  356. he would have been like right close to the bottom of the list.

  357. Okay?

  358. Well, how come you went jogging?

  359. There was a girl,

  360. a young woman.

  361. And he liked her.

  362. She went jogging.

  363. He said,

  364. you want to go jogging?

  365. And he did.

  366. That ended up not working out,

  367. that relationship.

  368. But the point is this.

  369. Obviously,

  370. with Louise and me,

  371. with many, many adventures,

  372. eventually it did work out.

  373. But this poor fellow,

  374. it did not work out.

  375. And they never got together.

  376. But here's the point.

  377. What happens when you're really in love with another person

  378. and you know that they're in love with you?

  379. What happens?

  380. You're willing to sacrifice.

  381. The first thing about it,

  382. when you're in love,

  383. you feel the most yourself

  384. that you've ever felt in your life.

  385. Right?

  386. When you're in love,

  387. you feel like yourself.

  388. You feel powerful.

  389. You have a great identity.

  390. You feel confident.

  391. And you also,

  392. what will you do?

  393. You put yourself second

  394. so that you can do

  395. their other person's interest.

  396. You're willing to sacrifice for them.

  397. Isn't that the

  398. true nature of love?

  399. What else happens?

  400. We're going to see this in a moment.

  401. Like,

  402. you talk to somebody,

  403. you know,

  404. talk to a person

  405. and they've had a great marriage

  406. and their husband dies

  407. or they've had a great marriage

  408. and it's come,

  409. where one person really loves the other person

  410. that's come to an end through divorce

  411. or some other thing like that.

  412. And for the person

  413. who really loves the other person,

  414. it feels like a type of death.

  415. It feels as if there's

  416. something in the very center

  417. of who you are

  418. that's been ripped out

  419. because it's the very nature of love,

  420. not only that you give of yourself

  421. and that you want to give to that person,

  422. but that you become one.

  423. That in love,

  424. you want to enter into the other person's life

  425. and you want that person

  426. to enter into you

  427. and there's a type of oneness

  428. so that when there's a break,

  429. it actually feels like a type of death.

  430. It actually feels like

  431. there's something inside of you

  432. that got ripped out.

  433. That's the nature of love.

  434. Look at what happens

  435. in the rest of the text.

  436. Look at verses 28 to 30.

  437. Look at how the text talks.

  438. Right?

  439. Verse 28.

  440. In the same way,

  441. husbands should love their wives

  442. as their own bodies.

  443. He who loves his wife

  444. loves himself.

  445. This is a talking,

  446. this isn't something

  447. that like in terms of

  448. overwhelming the other person.

  449. It's describing this deep type of oneness.

  450. It's reminding the husband

  451. of the deep type of oneness

  452. that happens in love.

  453. Verse 29.

  454. For no one ever hated his own flesh,

  455. but nourishes and cherishes it

  456. just as Christ does the church

  457. because we are members of his body.

  458. And then Paul goes

  459. and he quotes from the book of Genesis.

  460. Genesis chapter 2, verse 24.

    Genesis 2:24

  461. He says,

  462. Therefore a man shall leave

  463. his father and mother

  464. and hold fast to his wife,

  465. and the two shall become one flesh.

  466. This mystery is profound,

  467. and I am saying that it refers

  468. to Christ and the church.

  469. He's using the Christ and the church

  470. in this mystery of love

  471. and the mystery of marital love

  472. in particular,

  473. that it's as if there's this one flesh.

  474. So if you go back

  475. to my point,

  476. the Bible gives true exhortations

  477. in light of the true nature of love.

  478. The submitting,

  479. the sacrificing,

  480. the becoming one.

  481. The entire teaching

  482. is shaped on the true nature of love,

  483. isn't it?

  484. But some of you might say,

  485. George,

  486. this doesn't work.

  487. This doesn't work.

  488. George,

  489. marriages end in divorce.

  490. George,

  491. there's selfishness in marriage.

  492. George,

  493. husbands abuse their wives.

  494. There can be, of course,

  495. wives abusing their husbands,

  496. but it's a bigger problem

  497. of husbands abusing their wives,

  498. especially of physical violence.

  499. And George,

  500. this all now,

  501. now all of a sudden,

  502. our critics will go,

  503. well, George,

  504. this is just all airy-fairy.

  505. But no.

  506. The Bible gives

  507. these wise exhortations

  508. in light of the true nature of love

  509. and the true problem of sin.

  510. You see,

  511. the problem is

  512. that the Bible

  513. is both more wildly optimistic

  514. than the world,

  515. but also more wildly realistic,

  516. all within the context

  517. of the truth of the gospel.

  518. You see,

  519. the problem I have often

  520. when,

  521. that many of us have

  522. when we talk to Christians,

  523. and because we live in Canada,

  524. we have it as well,

  525. on one hand,

  526. on one hand,

  527. what will the average Canadian say

  528. about,

  529. if you explain the gospel

  530. or something like that to them,

  531. and about Jesus dying for sinners,

  532. and the average Canadian will say,

  533. but people are fundamentally good.

  534. Don't they say that?

  535. People are fundamentally good.

  536. I'm a good person.

  537. But then the very,

  538. very next breath,

  539. they say,

  540. you can't have advice

  541. about this,

  542. about marriage.

  543. Why?

  544. Because people aren't

  545. fundamentally good,

  546. and they beat each other up.

  547. Well,

  548. one moment,

  549. which one is it?

  550. I mean,

  551. it's a type of a discontinuity

  552. in how a lot of us think

  553. people are fundamentally good,

  554. but you can't give this type

  555. of advice to people

  556. because they'll abuse it.

  557. Why?

  558. Well,

  559. because they're not

  560. fundamentally good.

  561. But the Bible's realistic.

  562. The Bible doesn't say

  563. people are fundamentally good.

  564. It says there's an integrity

  565. to people.

  566. There's a longing for the good.

  567. It says that there's common grace

  568. and they do good things,

  569. but it says that we are,

  570. in fact,

  571. bent by sin.

  572. And you see,

  573. this then is why

  574. the Bible is so wise.

  575. Right?

  576. If you think about it for a second,

  577. this is why

  578. the Bible is so wise.

  579. This is why,

  580. if you go back

  581. and you look later on,

  582. remember I said

  583. it sets before the wife

  584. this task

  585. of submitting to her husband

  586. as to the Lord.

  587. and it doesn't give

  588. the husband

  589. any power to command.

  590. Instead,

  591. it says to the husband,

  592. husband,

  593. love your wife

  594. as Jesus loved his church.

  595. In other words,

  596. love for the sake of her,

  597. put her so high

  598. and the need for her

  599. to be,

  600. have integrity

  601. and all of that

  602. to the point of being willing

  603. to die to yourself

  604. and in fact,

  605. even die into your own life.

  606. Be willing to die.

  607. And the wife

  608. is not given

  609. any power

  610. to command

  611. the husband.

  612. Both of them

  613. are voluntary.

  614. Why are they voluntary?

  615. Because there's

  616. the true problem

  617. of sin.

  618. You see,

  619. there's a task

  620. which is enjoined,

  621. but it's not total

  622. submission

  623. nor total dying.

  624. Wives

  625. who are here,

  626. if your husband's

  627. a jerk,

  628. I don't know

  629. if I was allowed

  630. to say that in church,

  631. I just did.

  632. That's going to

  633. really profoundly

  634. shape

  635. what on earth

  636. submission's

  637. going to look like.

  638. If your husband's

  639. abusive,

  640. that's probably

  641. going to make it

  642. that the submitting

  643. is going to be

  644. almost impossible

  645. to see

  646. because he's abusive.

  647. Because the nature

  648. of the person

  649. you're married to

  650. is in fact

  651. going to have

  652. a profound

  653. way of shaping

  654. the godly

  655. following

  656. of these

  657. exhortations.

  658. And in fact,

  659. it says more than this.

  660. It's all,

  661. it's,

  662. it's,

  663. it's,

  664. it's,

  665. it's why not only

  666. is the command

  667. voluntary,

  668. so it's up to

  669. the person

  670. who does it,

  671. but it's also

  672. because they,

  673. because the Bible

  674. understands that sin

  675. is fundamentally

  676. a problem

  677. of selfishness

  678. and it's fundamentally

  679. a problem

  680. of putting yourself

  681. at the center

  682. of the universe

  683. and viewing everything

  684. from your own

  685. perspective.

  686. Quick example

  687. of this

  688. to how sin

  689. makes us

  690. the center

  691. of the universe

  692. and,

  693. and see everything

  694. from our own

  695. perspective.

  696. If at the end

  697. of the service

  698. I was to announce

  699. that God

  700. answered our prayer

  701. in a remarkable way

  702. and has given us

  703. a building,

  704. the very first thing

  705. most of us would think

  706. is how does this

  707. affect me?

  708. If I said the building

  709. is two kilometers away,

  710. for many of us

  711. the very first thing

  712. will be how does this

  713. affect me?

  714. Not,

  715. praise God!

  716. How does this affect me?

  717. Problem of selfishness.

  718. And so that's why

  719. the text,

  720. I have to watch my time,

  721. the text

  722. is so wise.

  723. It sets before us

  724. an exhortation

  725. that's voluntary

  726. that means

  727. that the husband

  728. and the wife

  729. do it with eyes

  730. wide open

  731. in light of the reality

  732. of the other person.

  733. There's still an exhortation

  734. to deal with

  735. their own sin,

  736. their own selfishness,

  737. their own self-centeredness.

  738. And it's also

  739. very wise

  740. because everything

  741. is cast

  742. within the reality

  743. of the fact

  744. that Jesus died

  745. on the cross

  746. for sinners.

  747. sinners.

  748. And that's

  749. what brings

  750. to the third thing.

  751. It's not just

  752. in light of

  753. the true nature

  754. of love,

  755. the true problem

  756. of sin,

  757. but the enduring

  758. truth of the gospel.

  759. You see,

  760. one of the things

  761. which is so wonderful

  762. about the text

  763. is if you think

  764. about it,

  765. the husband

  766. and the wife

  767. together

  768. show the beauty

  769. of the gospel.

  770. It's not just

  771. that the husband

  772. shows the beauty

  773. of the gospel

  774. and the wife

  775. doesn't,

  776. or the wife

  777. shows the beauty

  778. of the gospel

  779. and the husband

  780. doesn't.

  781. It shows

  782. that in a good

  783. marriage,

  784. a godly marriage,

  785. it takes a husband

  786. and wife together

  787. so the beauty

  788. and the power

  789. of the gospel

  790. is seen.

  791. How does that work?

  792. Well,

  793. think about what

  794. the gospel teaches.

  795. What does the gospel

  796. teach?

  797. The gospel teaches

  798. this,

  799. that God

  800. the Father,

  801. God the Son,

  802. God the Holy Spirit,

  803. three persons,

  804. one God

  805. from all eternity,

  806. they see human beings

  807. made in the image

  808. of God

  809. and they see

  810. that we have

  811. made ourselves

  812. the center,

  813. we have made

  814. ourselves selfish,

  815. we now turn

  816. from each other,

  817. we turn from God,

  818. we turn from the

  819. created order,

  820. there's this problem

  821. of being bent

  822. away from the good

  823. that's at the center

  824. of every single

  825. human being

  826. and human beings

  827. cannot save

  828. themselves

  829. and so God

  830. the Father

  831. says to God

  832. the Son

  833. in a sense,

  834. the only way

  835. to save them

  836. is to have

  837. you

  838. enter into

  839. that world

  840. and become

  841. as one of them

  842. and die

  843. in their place

  844. and so God

  845. the Son

  846. in submission

  847. to his Father

  848. sets aside

  849. his divine glory,

  850. his divine prerogatives,

  851. his appearance

  852. as God,

  853. his majesty,

  854. he sets

  855. all of these

  856. things aside,

  857. the honor

  858. and the glory

  859. and the worth

  860. that he is owed

  861. as God,

  862. the Son of God,

  863. he sets them all

  864. aside

  865. and being

  866. still remaining

  867. fully God,

  868. he humbles himself

  869. and submits

  870. to the demands

  871. of love,

  872. submits to the

  873. Father,

  874. submits to the need

  875. of fallen human

  876. beings like you

  877. and me

  878. and enters

  879. the human story

  880. as a zygote

  881. in the womb

  882. of Mary.

  883. Submission.

  884. No gospel

  885. without submission.

  886. And how does

  887. the gospel continue?

  888. The gospel

  889. isn't all about

  890. just the submission

  891. of the Son

  892. to the demands

  893. of love

  894. and to the Father

  895. because there's

  896. no gospel

  897. without the Son

  898. of God's

  899. dying upon

  900. the cross.

  901. And so Jesus

  902. lives a sinless

  903. life,

  904. miracles,

  905. teachings,

  906. sinless life

  907. and dies upon

  908. the cross.

  909. So that you

  910. and I

  911. can be made

  912. right with God

  913. when we put

  914. our faith

  915. and trust

  916. in him.

  917. And we see

  918. in Ephesians 5

  919. not just

  920. that the Bible

  921. is giving advice

  922. around the true

  923. nature of love

  924. that when we

  925. think about it

  926. we understand

  927. that that's

  928. the true nature

  929. of love

  930. and it's

  931. giving exhortations

  932. in light of

  933. the true

  934. problem of sin

  935. which we all

  936. realize there is

  937. a true problem

  938. of sin

  939. and we as Christians

  940. but not necessarily

  941. the world

  942. we also understand

  943. that the entire

  944. advice is shaped

  945. within such a way

  946. that in a good

  947. marriage the husband

  948. and wife together

  949. make the gospel

  950. beautiful.

  951. Make the gospel

  952. beautiful

  953. to a fallen world.

  954. Need to wrap it up.

  955. verse 33

  956. however let each

  957. one of you

  958. love his wife

  959. as himself

  960. and let the wife

  961. see that she

  962. respects her husband.

  963. So I just want

  964. to try to

  965. bring it up

  966. to a

  967. final point

  968. I think

  969. I'm going to

  970. just skip

  971. through some

  972. things here

  973. you can look

  974. it up online

  975. some final

  976. things

  977. it's very

  978. interesting

  979. in this text

  980. there's two

  981. exhortations

  982. given to women

  983. the wives

  984. and two

  985. exhortations

  986. given to the

  987. husbands

  988. and they're

  989. not the same

  990. and so

  991. for those

  992. women who

  993. are married

  994. here in the

  995. room

  996. the exhortations

  997. that are given

  998. to you

  999. is to

  1000. submit

  1001. to your

  1002. husband

  1003. and to

  1004. respect

  1005. him

  1006. and

  1007. for some

  1008. of you

  1009. that's going

  1010. to be very

  1011. hard

  1012. maybe for

  1013. issues in

  1014. your past

  1015. some of you

  1016. it's because

  1017. your husband

  1018. isn't maybe

  1019. acting very

  1020. well right

  1021. now

  1022. but the

  1023. task that's

  1024. given to you

  1025. is to learn

  1026. how to

  1027. submit

  1028. and to learn

  1029. how to

  1030. respect

  1031. and one

  1032. of my

  1033. pieces of

  1034. advice to

  1035. you would

  1036. be that

  1037. next time

  1038. you give

  1039. your husband

  1040. a card

  1041. don't say

  1042. on it

  1043. I love

  1044. you

  1045. but say

  1046. on it

  1047. I respect

  1048. you

  1049. I don't

  1050. know why

  1051. the Bible

  1052. says that

  1053. rather than

  1054. something else

  1055. but that's

  1056. what the Bible

  1057. says

  1058. say I

  1059. respect

  1060. you

  1061. and maybe

  1062. rather than

  1063. saying the

  1064. different ways

  1065. that you

  1066. love him

  1067. say these

  1068. are the

  1069. ways I

  1070. respect

  1071. you

  1072. and for

  1073. husbands

  1074. who are

  1075. here

  1076. there's two

  1077. different

  1078. commands

  1079. in this

  1080. text

  1081. you go

  1082. back

  1083. and you

  1084. look

  1085. there's

  1086. two

  1087. imperatives

  1088. in the

  1089. text

  1090. given to

  1091. men

  1092. different

  1093. than the

  1094. ones

  1095. that are

  1096. given

  1097. to

  1098. the

  1099. wives

  1100. the

  1101. two

  1102. imperatives

  1103. given

  1104. to

  1105. husbands

  1106. is

  1107. this

  1108. agape

  1109. love

  1110. that's a

  1111. self-giving

  1112. putting the

  1113. other first

  1114. seeking the

  1115. true good

  1116. of the

  1117. other

  1118. agape

  1119. love your

  1120. wife

  1121. to the

  1122. point of

  1123. being willing

  1124. to set

  1125. aside

  1126. your power

  1127. and your

  1128. prerogatives

  1129. and your

  1130. agendas

  1131. and so

  1132. love your

  1133. wife

  1134. and that

  1135. obviously

  1136. also includes

  1137. love as

  1138. affection

  1139. and it

  1140. is very

  1141. appropriate

  1142. husbands

  1143. that if you

  1144. write a card

  1145. for your

  1146. wife

  1147. don't say

  1148. I respect

  1149. you

  1150. say I

  1151. love

  1152. you

  1153. and to

  1154. figure out

  1155. in the

  1156. light of

  1157. your

  1158. marriage

  1159. how it

  1160. is that

  1161. you were

  1162. to put

  1163. such love

  1164. into practice

  1165. for your

  1166. wife

  1167. and the

  1168. other thing

  1169. and this

  1170. is a

  1171. mystery

  1172. and I

  1173. don't have

  1174. time to

  1175. go into

  1176. it but it

  1177. must be

  1178. very important

  1179. because it's

  1180. in Genesis

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  1181. chapter 2

  1182. Jesus quotes

  1183. it Paul

  1184. quotes it

  1185. it's in

  1186. several parts

  1187. of the

  1188. Bible

  1189. is that

  1190. guys who

  1191. are married

  1192. you need

  1193. to learn

  1194. to set

  1195. aside and

  1196. leave your

  1197. your mother

  1198. and father

  1199. your task

  1200. is to

  1201. leave your

  1202. mother

  1203. and father

  1204. and live

  1205. with your

  1206. wife in

  1207. such a

  1208. way

  1209. that you

  1210. unite and

  1211. relate to

  1212. her

  1213. to move

  1214. towards

  1215. one flesh

  1216. that's your

  1217. task guys

  1218. that's my

  1219. task

  1220. to be

  1221. willing to

  1222. love my

  1223. wife Louise

  1224. to learn

  1225. that I

  1226. to be

  1227. challenged

  1228. to continually

  1229. love my

  1230. wife in

  1231. such a way

  1232. that I'm

  1233. willing to

  1234. die for

  1235. her

  1236. and understand

  1237. the mystery

  1238. of what it

  1239. means to

  1240. leave my

  1241. mother and

  1242. father behind

  1243. to pursue

  1244. being one

  1245. flesh with

  1246. her

  1247. that's the

  1248. task

  1249. singles

  1250. you get to

  1251. listen in on

  1252. an odd

  1253. sermon

  1254. all I can

  1255. tell you is

  1256. you've gotten

  1257. some advice

  1258. about how to

  1259. pray for your

  1260. married friends

  1261. please stand

  1262. one of the

  1263. things which I

  1264. didn't mention

  1265. in this

  1266. sermon

  1267. I'm going to

  1268. mention it

  1269. right now

  1270. which is still

  1271. technically part of

  1272. the sermon

  1273. is if you go

  1274. back and you

  1275. read verses

  1276. chapter 5

  1277. verse 15

  1278. to 21

  1279. that long

  1280. sentence

  1281. and the

  1282. sort of the

  1283. governing verse

  1284. is walk in

  1285. love

  1286. and then

  1287. but the more

  1288. specific thing

  1289. that governs

  1290. the next little

  1291. bit and governs

  1292. the rest of the

  1293. text is that we

  1294. are to learn to

  1295. live in the

  1296. spirit

  1297. and the fact

  1298. of the matter

  1299. is both

  1300. husbands and

  1301. wives and

  1302. for singles

  1303. who have the

  1304. task of living

  1305. as a single

  1306. life to the

  1307. glory of God

  1308. is the

  1309. wonderful thing

  1310. about marriage

  1311. for us as

  1312. Christians

  1313. isn't that there's

  1314. somehow on one

  1315. level something

  1316. different for

  1317. Christian marriage

  1318. than non-Christian

  1319. marriage

  1320. marriage was

  1321. instituted by

  1322. God before the

  1323. fall it's woven

  1324. into the created

  1325. order it's part of

  1326. how all marriages

  1327. are to work

  1328. it's why many

  1329. non-Christian

  1330. marriages are

  1331. better than

  1332. Christian marriages

  1333. because marriage

  1334. is integral to

  1335. the way man

  1336. and woman

  1337. male and female

  1338. were created

  1339. and it's just

  1340. there but the

  1341. thing which is

  1342. specifically helpful

  1343. for us is not

  1344. just that we

  1345. look to the

  1346. gospel to

  1347. shape how we

  1348. live our lives

  1349. and to shape

  1350. our imagination

  1351. and to shape

  1352. the healing of

  1353. our memory

  1354. and the healing

  1355. of our wounds

  1356. but to also

  1357. understand that we

  1358. don't do our

  1359. marriage alone

  1360. that for you

  1361. and me who

  1362. are in Jesus

  1363. we dwell in the

  1364. Holy Spirit

  1365. and God in

  1366. particular

  1367. joins us to

  1368. call upon the

  1369. help of the

  1370. Holy Spirit

  1371. to figure out

  1372. how to live

  1373. and embody

  1374. these exhortations

  1375. in the real

  1376. context of our

  1377. own marriage

  1378. how to repent

  1379. and what to

  1380. pursue

  1381. let's pray

  1382. Father if there

  1383. are any here

  1384. who have not

  1385. yet given

  1386. their lives

  1387. to Jesus

  1388. I ask that

  1389. you would

  1390. make the

  1391. gospel more

  1392. beautiful and

  1393. more real to

  1394. them and move

  1395. in their hearts

  1396. that they would

  1397. give their lives

  1398. to Jesus

  1399. even today

  1400. Father for

  1401. those of us

  1402. who are here

  1403. who are not

  1404. in marriage

  1405. we bless you

  1406. for them

  1407. we ask that

  1408. the Holy Spirit

  1409. would move in a

  1410. mighty and

  1411. powerful way

  1412. in the midst

  1413. of their singleness

  1414. that their life

  1415. as a single

  1416. person would be

  1417. lived in such a

  1418. way that the

  1419. gospel is made

  1420. beautiful

  1421. that they come

  1422. closer and

  1423. closer to Jesus

  1424. that they are

  1425. filled more and

  1426. more by the Holy

  1427. Spirit and know

  1428. the integrity

  1429. that they have

  1430. as a single

  1431. made in your

  1432. image and

  1433. redeemed by

  1434. Jesus and your

  1435. child by

  1436. adoption and

  1437. grace

  1438. and Father for

  1439. those of us

  1440. who are husbands

  1441. and wives

  1442. we ask that

  1443. the Holy Spirit

  1444. would move with

  1445. might and power

  1446. and deep conviction

  1447. in our marriage

  1448. that you would

  1449. help us Father

  1450. to remember

  1451. these exhortations

  1452. and that you

  1453. would fan into

  1454. flame within us

  1455. a longing and

  1456. yearning to be

  1457. so gripped by

  1458. the gospel

  1459. that we seek

  1460. to pursue

  1461. that which you

  1462. exhort us to

  1463. seek and that

  1464. we would be

  1465. willing to repent

  1466. of those things

  1467. that we need

  1468. to repent of

  1469. that our

  1470. marriages Father

  1471. that our

  1472. individual lives

  1473. and our

  1474. marriages might

  1475. make the gospel

  1476. beautiful

  1477. Father that

  1478. is our

  1479. prayer

  1480. and we

  1481. ask this in

  1482. the name of

  1483. Jesus and

  1484. all God's

  1485. people said

  1486. Amen
