  1. The scripture reading comes from Deuteronomy chapter 5. You can find the passage in your bulletin.

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  2. Verse 1, And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them,

  3. Hear, O Israel, the statues and the ruse I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.

  4. Then in verse 6,

  5. Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

  6. As the Lord your God commanded you.

  7. Six days you shall labor and do all your work.

  8. But the seventh day is the Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  9. On it you shall not do any work.

  10. You or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock or the sojourner who is within your gates that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.

  11. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt.

  12. And the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.

  13. Therefore, the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

  14. Honor your father and your mother as the Lord your God commanded you that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God has given you.

  15. You shall not murder.

  16. Great.

  17. Thank you so much, Sherman.

  18. Thank you so much, Sherman.

  19. It is so exciting to be back.

  20. It's so great to be here together.

  21. What I'd love us to do is just before I begin to share from this passage, I'd love us just to pray and ask God to really speak to us through this.

  22. Father, we just thank you that when you speak, you call us to listen because you desire to love us through your word.

  23. And you desire to change us through your word.

  24. And you desire to make us into the people that you have created us to be through your word.

  25. And I pray you would speak this morning.

  26. Pray that you'd open our hearts to hear what you want us to hear.

  27. Lord, remove anything that is not from you.

  28. But I pray you'll come with power.

  29. Take these simple words and let them just drive, be driven right into our hearts, Lord.

  30. That we may love you more.

  31. That we may truly worship you with every area of our lives, I pray.

  32. In Jesus' name.

  33. Amen.

  34. Great.

  35. So, we have been going through the Ten Commandments online.

  36. Okay, who's been following online?

  37. Okay, most of you.

  38. So, you should know we've already gone through four of the commandments already.

  39. And so, we're going to come to commandment number five, which is honor your father and mother.

  40. So, before we start, what I'd like you to do is I'm going to do a poll.

  41. Okay.

  42. So, I want you to stand up if someone has experienced childbirth to bring you into the world.

  43. Okay, there's a few people who clearly have not experienced, that didn't have any parents.

  44. So, if you didn't stand up, then this sermon is completely irrelevant to you.

  45. You can walk out right now.

  46. You can sit down.

  47. If you did stand up, then this sermon has great relevance to you.

  48. Okay.

  49. So, you just have to decide right now whether this is relevant or not.

  50. Okay.

  51. So, this command, I'm going to dive straight into looking at this command because I think

  52. this has a real weight for all of us in where we are 2020 in Hong Kong.

  53. Honor your father and mother.

  54. First of all, what does that mean?

  55. Well, the word honor literally means to be heavy or to give weight to someone.

  56. So, it's saying you take treating your parents seriously.

  57. It means giving your parents profound respect.

  58. The opposite is to treat your parents lightly or to disrespect them as if they don't really

  59. matter in your life.

  60. And so, commentators have looked at this commandment and seen that it's actually a hinge commandment

  61. between the first four commandments, which are really about your duty towards God, worshiping

  62. him alone, having no other idols, honoring his name above all other names, and keeping the

  63. Sabbath of worship to him.

  64. The hinge and then moving on to the commands which really focus on duty towards your neighbor

  65. and how you love your neighbor.

  66. But this one comes in between them.

  67. It's the way that you move from that upward focus to that horizontal focus.

  68. And so, what you'll see is we move from loving God to loving other people through honoring

  69. our parents.

  70. Now, why does he do that?

  71. Because your parents are the first and probably some of the most influential people that you've

  72. encountered in your life.

  73. And so, what you need to remember is God gave you your parents as a gift.

  74. Okay?

  75. Some of you, whether you like that or not, your parents didn't choose you.

  76. Do you know that?

  77. And you didn't choose your parents either.

  78. And so, what that means is both ways, you are a gift to each other, but you are a broken

  79. gift in different ways.

  80. But God is in the redemption business.

  81. So, what I want us to look at is the fact that this command is saying we don't honor our

  82. parents because they deserve it.

  83. They don't honor their parents because they deserve it.

  84. Nowhere in scripture says you can only honor your parents if they've treated you really

  85. well or if they've been so sacrificially loving to you.

  86. It never says that anywhere.

  87. Because what the parents, what the Bible says is, frankly, we live in a broken world where

  88. some parents are not like that at all.

  89. But the command comes to us even if you've been hurt by your parents.

  90. And God takes that really seriously.

  91. And we'll talk about that in a little bit.

  92. But the command comes to us not to honor our parents because they merited it in some way,

  93. but to honor them because in doing so we honor God who has given them to us as our parents,

  94. as a gift.

  95. And so, that is what we are called to do.

  96. We're called to honor our parents.

  97. But why should we have this command?

  98. We honor them as we're honoring God.

  99. And I'm going to stand up here as it's easier for me to, rather than looking over.

  100. Why does God give us this command?

  101. Well, there's three reasons.

  102. Okay?

  103. Three reasons that I think God gives this command.

  104. The first reason is for our blessing.

  105. You see what he says in the passage here.

  106. He says,

  107. Honor your father and mother, as the Lord commanded you,

  108. that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that your Lord,

  109. your God, is giving you.

  110. You see what he says?

  111. That it may go well with you.

  112. Another way of saying it is that you may prosper in the land.

  113. The Israelites are on the edge of the promised land.

  114. They're about to go into this place of incredible blessing.

  115. And God says, if you want to enjoy this land as I really want you to, then take this command seriously.

  116. That actually the path of blessing for you is actually goes through this obedience to this commandment.

  117. And it's not saying, hey, like everyone's going to live to 102 or something.

  118. That's not the point of it.

  119. The point is, this is for your blessing.

  120. Paul says in Ephesians, this is the first command with a promise.

  121. It's a promise of blessing for us.

  122. Now, I don't know how many Disney movies you've watched,

  123. but so many Disney movies have this idea that there is this kind of princess or this prince,

  124. and the way that they're to get freedom and blessing in their life

  125. is to get out of the restrictions of their controlling parents.

  126. You know, think of like Snow White or Tangled or Little Mermaid or Cinderella.

  127. All of them have that narrative.

  128. This command is saying, no, the way to blessing isn't to get out from your parents.

  129. It's actually to honor your parents.

  130. And so what this means is you can be singing in church every Sunday.

  131. You can be serving all you like.

  132. You can be evangelizing out in the world.

  133. But if you are not doing this commandment well, there's going to be a hole inside of your heart.

  134. There's going to be a wound there where you are not going to experience the blessing that God wants for you.

  135. There's going to be a spiritual stuntedness in your growth until this command is taken seriously.

  136. And we know that just from psychology and sociology,

  137. we know research shows that actually the parent-child relationship is essential for emotional health,

  138. for mental health, for your own sense of identity.

  139. It's also for wisdom and guidance.

  140. Like, I would have made so many stupid mistakes if I hadn't listened to some things my parents had said.

  141. And also for social support networks, you know, for like the elderly particularly.

  142. Family is essential for creating a healthy, prospering society.

  143. And God knows that.

  144. That's why he gives us this command.

  145. And if we don't take this command seriously, there's always going to be a shadow hanging over your life,

  146. even if everything else is going well with you.

  147. And you know that if you have a difficult relationship with your parents.

  148. So he says it's for your blessing.

  149. But also, he says, actually, secondly,

  150. it's also dishonoring your parents brings curse or judgment.

  151. Now, this is a bit harder.

  152. But Deuteronomy 22 says that there's a rebellious son who is not listening to his parents.

  153. And he's basically going off the rails.

  154. And God says in Deuteronomy, he says,

  155. listen, the punishment for that son, for the harm that he's doing on the community,

  156. is death.

  157. Now, that sounds pretty harsh.

  158. But what he's saying on the point of it is,

  159. willful disobedience against your parents not only destroys your own blessing,

  160. but it can harm society and harm the relationships around you.

  161. You know that.

  162. If there is relational breakdown,

  163. you know it affects the poverty levels of both young and old.

  164. You know that?

  165. It affects the burden on hospitals and on the welfare system is totally different.

  166. Just think about the, you know, the cultural revolution.

  167. Do you know when sons and daughters denounce their parents?

  168. And you see the devastation it just brought in the whole of society.

  169. God takes this really seriously.

  170. In fact, in Romans 1, there's this passage where God goes through this list of things

  171. where people are under his judgment.

  172. And he goes, you know, people who are liars, people who are envious,

  173. people who are gossips, people who are haters of God.

  174. And you go, yeah, that sounds about right for people who are under God's judgment.

  175. And then he goes, and those who are disobedient to their parents.

  176. And you go, wow, God really takes this seriously.

  177. So why is he giving the command?

  178. He's giving it for our blessing.

  179. But he's also giving it so that we avoid his judgment

  180. and avoid harm and curse in our lives individually and as a society.

  181. But thirdly, and more important, even more importantly than those,

  182. is because it actually is a way that we worship and please God.

  183. We worship and please God.

  184. Colossians 3 verse 20 says this.

    Colossians 3:20

  185. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

  186. I don't know, if you realize this, God gave the gift of your parents,

  187. or gift of parents to teach us how to listen and how to respond to authority,

  188. including God himself.

  189. Because all of us are natural rebels.

  190. Anyone not a rebel in any way?

  191. All of us are in some ways.

  192. And primarily we're rebels against God, naturally.

  193. And where's the first place that you learn how to listen?

  194. Because you know the true saying that you don't have to teach a child to disobey you.

  195. They just do it naturally, right?

  196. I've got an eight-month-old.

  197. I know how it works.

  198. But our parents were given to us so that they would be the first place we learn how to listen,

  199. the first place we learn how to submit,

  200. the first place we learn how to lay down our will and say yes to an authority figure over us.

  201. And if you don't get to learn that,

  202. just think what misery your kids are going to grow up with every teacher,

  203. with every boss, everything the rest of their lives.

  204. It would be miserable if you don't learn that.

  205. And so what that means, if you are a parent,

  206. it's actually really important that you know that God has given you your role,

  207. not just to kind of get your kids a great education and get them a great start in life.

  208. He's given you a role that your kids will learn to listen to God through listening to you.

  209. Now that's not a stick to beat your kids up with,

  210. but there is a responsibility that God gives to you

  211. so that your kids will experience the goodness of God's rule

  212. and the grace of listening and obedience to him through you.

  213. It's serious.

  214. I mean, in honoring our parents,

  215. what we're doing is we are seeking to honor God

  216. and honor the authority that he has placed over us,

  217. and we want to please him above all else.

  218. God's serious about families.

  219. He wants us to honor him.

  220. He wants our blessing.

  221. He doesn't want our curse,

  222. and he wants us to learn how to please him.

  223. That's the why.

  224. But what I want to go on to is how do we keep this?

  225. And I'm going to spend more time on this section

  226. because when we look at this,

  227. I'm sure there's a thousand questions that just raise up in our minds as we hear this.

  228. But we've got to listen first of all and see how Jesus actually treats this command.

  229. So there's a couple of things that Jesus shows us of how he keeps us.

  230. The first thing he shows us is how he holds this command in high regard.

  231. I don't know if you know, Matthew 15,

  232. there's this scenario where the Pharisees, the religious leaders,

  233. are criticizing Jesus' disciples for not washing their hands.

  234. And Jesus comes to them and says,

  235. why do you break the commandment of God to honor your father and mother?

  236. By what you do is you say,

  237. hey, the money that you should give to your parents for supporting them,

  238. you can give to us or you can give to the temple.

  239. You don't have to support your parents,

  240. and God will accept it.

  241. It's fine.

  242. And Jesus says, no way.

  243. Your heart is far away from God's heart, he says.

  244. And what he says is this.

  245. He says, your support for your parents,

  246. and Jesus is showing us this,

  247. your support for your parents in their old age,

  248. whether it's financially or in other ways,

  249. is a key way that you honor God in that.

  250. And in Hong Kong,

  251. I think they actually do this much better than where I'm from.

  252. So you see that Jesus takes it seriously.

  253. At the cross,

  254. Jesus' mission has reached its climax.

  255. He is in utter agony.

  256. He is emotionally exhausted.

  257. He is taking the sins of the whole world on his shoulders.

  258. This is the greatest moment in history.

  259. And do you know what is right at the front of Jesus' mind?

  260. At that moment,

  261. his mother.

  262. Because he looks and he sees his mother,

  263. and he says to John, his disciple,

  264. please take care of my mother.

  265. Isn't that incredible?

  266. At that ultimate moment,

  267. he cares for his mother.

  268. And John takes her in and looks after her.

  269. You see,

  270. Jesus is saying,

  271. this is not just a cultural duty that you should do.

  272. It is an act of worship to God,

  273. because God is pleased with this.

  274. And Jesus shows you that right in the hardest moment.

  275. God has designed things so that the parents who looked after you

  276. and took care of you when you were young,

  277. that when they get old,

  278. that we are to take care of them.

  279. We're not meant to outsource all the care for our parents

  280. just to elderly homes.

  281. God designs it so that we have a responsibility.

  282. And if I'm honest,

  283. I really wrestle with this,

  284. because my parents are in the UK,

  285. and they're getting older.

  286. And so we have to really wrestle with what that looks like in our situation.

  287. I know many of you probably have similar wrestles.

  288. But I want you to see Jesus take this seriously.

  289. So he honors it.

  290. But then I also want you to see a second thing that Jesus does.

  291. This is really interesting.

  292. He shows that honoring does not always mean obeying.

  293. Here we go.

  294. Some of you are going,

  295. hmm, what's that about?

  296. Some of you are going, yes.

  297. Before you're getting too excited, Jillian,

  298. we'll hear what the Bible says.

  299. Jesus goes to celebrate the Passover in Jerusalem

  300. when he's 12 years old with his whole family.

  301. The whole village is going along.

  302. And then Mary and Joseph are on their way back,

  303. and they turn around,

  304. and they realize, where's Jesus?

  305. We've lost him.

  306. And then they spend three days,

  307. and they're stressed out of their minds,

  308. trying to find Jesus.

  309. And eventually, they come to the temple,

  310. and there is Jesus.

  311. And Mary goes to Jesus,

  312. why are you treating us like this?

  313. Didn't you know we've been looking for you everywhere?

  314. We're so stressed.

  315. How can you do this to us?

  316. And Jesus, calm as you like, says,

  317. didn't you know I had to be in my father's house?

  318. He's going,

  319. don't you realize that actually,

  320. the worship of my heavenly father

  321. has a priority,

  322. even over following your wishes

  323. in this moment.

  324. But before you think Jesus is just being

  325. a kind of rebellious,

  326. not even a teenager yet,

  327. he's 12,

  328. he then,

  329. the next line Luke says is,

  330. and Jesus went to Nazareth with his parents

  331. and was submissive to them.

  332. Do you see that tension there?

  333. You see,

  334. his heart attitude as a child

  335. is an attitude of submission,

  336. but where there is a clash

  337. between the ultimate allegiance

  338. to his heavenly father

  339. and the wishes of his parents,

  340. he says,

  341. no,

  342. my heavenly father comes first.

  343. Let me give you one more example.

  344. Luke 8.

  345. Jesus is teaching to the crowds

  346. and his mother and his brother turn up

  347. and they go,

  348. hey,

  349. we want to see you.

  350. I think food's getting cold

  351. or whatever it was.

  352. And they say,

  353. and Jesus says to them

  354. and to the crowd

  355. and everyone watching,

  356. who are my mother and brothers?

  357. Which is actually

  358. totally culturally offensive.

  359. Okay,

  360. your mother and brothers are there.

  361. He says,

  362. no,

  363. who are my mother and brothers?

  364. The person who hears my word

  365. and does it,

  366. that's my mother and brothers.

  367. Imagine the parents hearing that.

  368. But Jesus is making a point.

  369. He's saying

  370. that your family identity,

  371. your blood family ties

  372. are important and significant,

  373. but they are temporary.

  374. But your spiritual family ties

  375. are even more significant

  376. because they're eternal.

  377. and they're with me.

  378. And so,

  379. what Jesus is doing here,

  380. he's showing you

  381. that this tension,

  382. that he is to honor your parents,

  383. but also,

  384. we are to allow God

  385. to be the one

  386. that we are honoring ultimately.

  387. Now,

  388. why is that significant?

  389. significant?

  390. It's significant

  391. because

  392. it's a challenge

  393. both to Eastern culture

  394. where we often idolize our parents,

  395. and it's a challenge

  396. to Western culture

  397. where we idolize

  398. our independence.

  399. So,

  400. I'll just give you

  401. an example of this.

  402. When Fiona and I

  403. were dating,

  404. and we'd known each other

  405. a long time,

  406. so we were looking to get married

  407. actually quite early on

  408. because we'd been together

  409. for a long time

  410. as friends.

  411. And Fiona told her

  412. her parents this,

  413. and they flipped out.

  414. For 10 months,

  415. her dad didn't speak to her.

  416. Her mom would ring up

  417. very emotional

  418. at 2 a.m. in the morning

  419. saying,

  420. you cannot marry Chris.

  421. And

  422. me as an independent

  423. Westerner,

  424. I was going,

  425. well,

  426. we're trying to honor God

  427. in this.

  428. We're not going to let

  429. your parents control us

  430. in this.

  431. We

  432. mustn't be slaves

  433. to the kind of

  434. idolatrous,

  435. sinful expectations

  436. of your parents.

  437. Let's just go ahead

  438. and do it anyway.

  439. But then the

  440. Eastern kind of side

  441. goes,

  442. but actually,

  443. your parents

  444. have given you everything.

  445. Like,

  446. you owe them

  447. your life.

  448. Like,

  449. they've invested in you,

  450. so you've got to

  451. actually almost

  452. pay them back.

  453. So you can't rebel

  454. against them.

  455. You've just got to,

  456. honoring them

  457. means you do what

  458. they want

  459. and what they wish.

  460. And so there was

  461. this tension

  462. that we felt.

  463. And so,

  464. how do we get

  465. through this?

  466. Well,

  467. we're wrestling.

  468. What does it mean

  469. to honor our parents

  470. without just being

  471. independent,

  472. but also not being a

  473. slave to their

  474. expectations?

  475. And so,

  476. what do we do?

  477. We asked a lot of

  478. people for advice.

  479. And then,

  480. we decided

  481. we'd be patient.

  482. So,

  483. I moved to Hong Kong

  484. and I spent

  485. every week

  486. for one year

  487. going to Delhi,

  488. France in Tune 1,

  489. meeting my future

  490. mother-in-law

  491. and her speaking

  492. Cantonese to me

  493. and me just

  494. nodding and smiling,

  495. not understanding

  496. anything that she

  497. was talking about,

  498. but because

  499. I wanted her

  500. to see that

  501. actually I was

  502. investing in her

  503. and she was

  504. important.

  505. I wanted to

  506. honor her

  507. by trying to

  508. listen to her

  509. and engage

  510. with her.

  511. But after about

  512. a year or so

  513. of this,

  514. we came to the

  515. point where we

  516. really felt God

  517. actually saying,

  518. actually,

  519. you've been waiting

  520. long enough

  521. and I feel like

  522. you're actually

  523. more a slave

  524. to what your

  525. parents are

  526. thinking.

  527. So,

  528. we ended up

  529. after a lot

  530. of discussion,

  531. we then went

  532. back and

  533. Fiona went to

  534. her mom

  535. and asked her

  536. if we could

  537. get married.

  538. And if they

  539. had said no

  540. at that point,

  541. I think in our

  542. hearts we would

  543. have prayed about

  544. it,

  545. but we would

  546. probably have

  547. said,

  548. actually,

  549. I think we've

  550. honored you

  551. and really been

  552. trying to do

  553. what's right,

  554. but we will

  555. go ahead anyway

  556. because we believe

  557. that honors God

  558. first.

  559. but we didn't

  560. do that lightly

  561. because we need

  562. to see that in

  563. our own hearts,

  564. I can be

  565. idolatrous in

  566. both ways,

  567. independent or

  568. in slavery,

  569. but God calls

  570. us to take this

  571. command seriously

  572. and actually,

  573. by the way,

  574. as you may well

  575. know,

  576. they said yes

  577. and we've got a

  578. great relationship

  579. with them.

  580. But here's the

  581. crucial thing,

  582. you place your

  583. parents and their

  584. wishes first and

  585. you will idolize

  586. them.

  587. And you know,

  588. if you ever get

  589. married,

  590. and that's still

  591. the case,

  592. you will destroy

  593. your marriage

  594. because your

  595. spouse will

  596. always know that

  597. your parents have

  598. a greater voice

  599. than your spouse

  600. has in your

  601. marriage and

  602. they'll feel

  603. that.

  604. But also,

  605. if you honor

  606. God first,

  607. it will humble

  608. your independence

  609. and it will make

  610. you seek to love

  611. and honor them

  612. when even at

  613. times that may

  614. lead to conflict,

  615. but you don't do

  616. that lightly.

  617. So how do we

  618. honor our parents

  619. well without

  620. idolizing them?

  621. How do you get

  622. that tension

  623. right?

  624. Because actually,

  625. there's so many

  626. emotions with our

  627. parents,

  628. aren't there?

  629. I think the

  630. key to this

  631. is to realize

  632. one very important

  633. thing.

  634. Your parents

  635. are not God.

  636. your parents

  637. can never

  638. fulfill

  639. what God

  640. has said

  641. that he will

  642. fulfill.

  643. You see,

  644. your parents

  645. will always

  646. disappoint you

  647. in some way,

  648. but God

  649. will never

  650. disappoint you.

  651. You know,

  652. when you're a kid,

  653. you think your

  654. parents can do

  655. nothing wrong.

  656. When you're a

  657. teenager,

  658. you wonder if

  659. they can ever

  660. do anything

  661. right.

  662. But actually,

  663. you know that

  664. as you go

  665. through life,

  666. some of us

  667. wanted our

  668. parents to

  669. accept us

  670. and they

  671. rejected us

  672. or they were

  673. absent.

  674. Some of us

  675. wanted our

  676. parents to

  677. listen to us

  678. and understand

  679. us and they

  680. just didn't

  681. get you.

  682. Or they were

  683. too busy for

  684. you.

  685. Some of us

  686. have been

  687. disappointed

  688. because they

  689. broke promises.

  690. And even

  691. if you have

  692. amazing parents,

  693. like I've got

  694. pretty good

  695. parents,

  696. here's a truth,

  697. your parents

  698. are sinners.

  699. And so are

  700. you, by the

  701. way.

  702. But God

  703. gave you

  704. your parents

  705. to make you

  706. long for

  707. the perfect

  708. parent,

  709. your heavenly

  710. father.

  711. You see,

  712. John chapter

    John 13 chapter mention

  713. 13,

  714. there's this

  715. beautiful verse

  716. which says,

  717. Jesus says,

  718. I will not

  719. leave you

  720. as orphans,

  721. but I will

  722. come to you.

  723. If your

  724. parents have

  725. abandoned you,

  726. God says,

  727. I will never

  728. leave you

  729. alone.

  730. Today,

  731. I want to

  732. come to

  733. you,

  734. whatever your

  735. circumstance.

  736. Romans 8

  737. says this,

  738. we do not

  739. have a spirit

  740. that makes us

  741. a slave

  742. again to

  743. fear,

  744. but we have

  745. the spirit

  746. of adoption

  747. as sons

  748. and daughters

  749. by whom

  750. we cry

  751. Abba,

  752. Father.

  753. You know,

  754. when my

  755. eight-year-old

  756. son cries,

  757. doesn't matter

  758. where he is

  759. in the room,

  760. my ears

  761. prick up

  762. and I'm

  763. going to run

  764. to where he

  765. is straight

  766. away to see

  767. what's wrong.

  768. Your heavenly

  769. father is a

  770. billion times

  771. more attentive

  772. to your cry

  773. than I could

  774. ever be.

  775. he hears

  776. you,

  777. he knows

  778. you,

  779. and he

  780. cares for

  781. you.

  782. Parents may

  783. disappoint,

  784. but your

  785. heavenly father

  786. will always

  787. be faithful

  788. to you.

  789. You know,

  790. the thing

  791. that gives

  792. God the

  793. greatest

  794. happiness,

  795. the thing

  796. that he

  797. thinks is

  798. the most

  799. amazing thing

  800. that he

  801. can do,

  802. that he

  803. gets excited

  804. about,

  805. isn't to

  806. point out

  807. all your

  808. mistakes.

  809. It isn't

  810. to go,

  811. oh,

  812. I've got to

  813. love you

  814. because I'm

  815. God,

  816. but,

  817. you know,

  818. if you keep

  819. doing what

  820. you're doing,

  821. then maybe

  822. that might

  823. be in doubt

  824. in a few

  825. weeks'

  826. time.

  827. That's not

  828. what excites

  829. him.

  830. What excites

  831. him is to

  832. pour out

  833. his compassion

  834. and his

  835. love and

  836. his mercy

  837. on rebellious

  838. children like

  839. you and

  840. me,

  841. again and

  842. again and

  843. again and

  844. again and

  845. he gets

  846. excited about

  847. it.

  848. You know

  849. the prodigal

  850. son story?

  851. You know

  852. that story

  853. where the

  854. son has

  855. rebelled

  856. against his

  857. family and

  858. then he

  859. comes back

  860. and he

  861. prepares this

  862. little speech

  863. because he

  864. thinks,

  865. okay,

  866. maybe I

  867. can get

  868. my father

  869. to accept

  870. me if I

  871. just kind

  872. of make

  873. an

  874. explanation.

  875. And he

  876. gets back

  877. and while

  878. he's a

  879. long way

  880. off,

  881. the father

  882. sees him

  883. and doesn't

  884. go,

  885. oh,

  886. what have I

  887. got to

  888. say to him

  889. now?

  890. He

  891. runs

  892. with his

  893. arms open

  894. and the

  895. guy starts

  896. preparing his

  897. little speech

  898. and he cuts

  899. him short

  900. and he wraps

  901. his arms

  902. around and

  903. says,

  904. let's have

  905. a party.

  906. That's what

  907. your heavenly

  908. father is

  909. like.

  910. That's the

  911. heart of

  912. God.

  913. That's who

  914. we have to

  915. find our

  916. rest and

  917. our security

  918. and our

  919. hope in

  920. because if

  921. we do

  922. not,

  923. then we

  924. will look

  925. for it in

  926. other places

  927. and even

  928. look for it

  929. in our

  930. parents.

  931. And that

  932. will always

  933. hurt you.

  934. Some of us,

  935. our view of

  936. God as

  937. father has

  938. been colored

  939. by our

  940. own

  941. parents.

  942. But what

  943. God wants

  944. to do is

  945. to let your

  946. view of who

  947. God is

  948. reshape the

  949. way that you

  950. relate to

  951. your parents

  952. out of a

  953. security and

  954. a love.

  955. And so I'm

  956. going to give

  957. you some

  958. practical steps

  959. in how we

  960. honor our

  961. parents in a

  962. minute.

  963. But all

  964. of these

  965. are useless.

  966. Maybe not

  967. useless, but

  968. they're going

  969. to be so

  970. less effective

  971. unless you

  972. know that

  973. God doesn't

  974. love you

  975. because he

  976. has to.

  977. That God

  978. loves you

  979. because he

  980. loves to.

  981. And out

  982. of that

  983. knowledge,

  984. that's the

  985. security with

  986. which you can

  987. do these

  988. things that I'm

  989. going to share

  990. with you right

  991. now.

  992. when you

  993. are a kid,

  994. honoring

  995. fundamentally

  996. means obeying

  997. what your

  998. parents tell

  999. you, even

  1000. if you don't

  1001. like it.

  1002. Unless they're

  1003. telling you to

  1004. do something

  1005. that God has

  1006. told you not

  1007. to do.

  1008. But as you

  1009. grow through

  1010. the teenage

  1011. years and

  1012. become an

  1013. adult,

  1014. honoring your

  1015. parents begins

  1016. to look a

  1017. little bit

  1018. different in

  1019. different ways.

  1020. And so here

  1021. are some

  1022. ways that I

  1023. want to just

  1024. give you four

  1025. or five ways

  1026. that we can

  1027. actually learn

  1028. how to honor

  1029. our parents.

  1030. Here's some

  1031. practical things.

  1032. The first

  1033. one, and

  1034. this is huge,

  1035. forgive our

  1036. parents.

  1037. Do you know,

  1038. I think one

  1039. of the biggest

  1040. reasons we

  1041. struggle with

  1042. this command

  1043. is because

  1044. all of us

  1045. in some way

  1046. have been

  1047. wounded by our

  1048. parents.

  1049. Some of it

  1050. may be a

  1051. scratch,

  1052. some of it

  1053. may be a

  1054. very deep

  1055. wound in our

  1056. hearts.

  1057. But the

  1058. thing is,

  1059. like, I

  1060. hardly meet a

  1061. person in

  1062. Hong Kong

  1063. who hasn't

  1064. got some

  1065. family hurt

  1066. in their

  1067. life.

  1068. It was

  1069. emotional

  1070. absence,

  1071. they never

  1072. said I

  1073. love you,

  1074. there was

  1075. all this

  1076. kind of

  1077. expectations

  1078. placed on

  1079. you,

  1080. you never

  1081. felt that

  1082. you could

  1083. meet up to

  1084. the requirements

  1085. that were

  1086. expected,

  1087. a whole

  1088. load of

  1089. things,

  1090. even abuse

  1091. and harshness

  1092. and criticalness.

  1093. God doesn't

  1094. take those

  1095. wounds lightly.

  1096. That's why

  1097. he died for

  1098. you.

  1099. Because he

  1100. wants to

  1101. die for

  1102. you,

  1103. he died

  1104. for you

  1105. so he

  1106. can heal

  1107. you.

  1108. But some

  1109. of us

  1110. have been

  1111. masking over

  1112. those wounds

  1113. inside with

  1114. busyness,

  1115. with a whole

  1116. load of

  1117. things we've

  1118. been trying

  1119. to do in

  1120. our lives

  1121. just to

  1122. cover over

  1123. the fact

  1124. that we

  1125. actually have

  1126. deep wounds

  1127. from our

  1128. parents in

  1129. our hearts.

  1130. And we're

  1131. I think

  1132. God wants

  1133. today to

  1134. say to

  1135. some of

  1136. you,

  1137. stop

  1138. pretending

  1139. it's

  1140. fine.

  1141. I want

  1142. to take

  1143. off that

  1144. band-aid,

  1145. that plaster,

  1146. that bandage,

  1147. and I want

  1148. to bring

  1149. healing to

  1150. you.

  1151. But the

  1152. way I

  1153. want to

  1154. do that

  1155. is through

  1156. forgiveness.

  1157. You see,

  1158. forgiveness

  1159. is a

  1160. release from

  1161. the cage

  1162. of idolizing

  1163. our parents.

  1164. Do you

  1165. know,

  1166. what I mean

  1167. by that is

  1168. you idolize

  1169. your parents

  1170. when you

  1171. put too

  1172. much weight

  1173. on their

  1174. words or

  1175. their actions,

  1176. more weight

  1177. than you

  1178. put on what

  1179. Jesus says

  1180. about you

  1181. and what

  1182. Jesus has

  1183. done for

  1184. you.

  1185. And so

  1186. today we're

  1187. going to

  1188. have some

  1189. people who

  1190. will be up

  1191. to pray

  1192. with you.

  1193. If you

  1194. know that

  1195. actually there's

  1196. areas in

  1197. your life

  1198. where you

  1199. need to

  1200. work through

  1201. some forgiveness

  1202. with your

  1203. parents,

  1204. I want you

  1205. to come up

  1206. afterwards for

  1207. prayer.

  1208. Don't run

  1209. away,

  1210. don't go

  1211. another day

  1212. without dealing

  1213. with it.

  1214. Because this

  1215. is so serious

  1216. because God

  1217. wants your

  1218. blessing in

  1219. life.

  1220. And some

  1221. of those

  1222. wounds may

  1223. be very

  1224. deep.

  1225. And it's

  1226. not going to

  1227. be a quick

  1228. fix.

  1229. You need

  1230. some people

  1231. to journey

  1232. with you.

  1233. And I

  1234. want you to

  1235. come up and

  1236. talk to me

  1237. or talk to

  1238. Kevin or

  1239. Sylvie or a

  1240. CG leader or

  1241. one of the

  1242. other elders.

  1243. But don't go

  1244. away with a

  1245. festering wound

  1246. because that's

  1247. only going to

  1248. infect for

  1249. longer.

  1250. Yeah.

  1251. God wants

  1252. to bless

  1253. us.

  1254. He wants

  1255. to do it

  1256. through forgiving

  1257. our parents.

  1258. Secondly,

  1259. he wants

  1260. us to

  1261. honor our

  1262. parents through

  1263. saying sorry.

  1264. This is a

  1265. hard one.

  1266. You know,

  1267. I was talking

  1268. to someone the

  1269. other day who

  1270. said they

  1271. still had just

  1272. some real

  1273. issues with

  1274. their dad.

  1275. And God

  1276. just kind of

  1277. convicted them

  1278. in their own

  1279. heart of how

  1280. they've been

  1281. disrespecting their

  1282. father even

  1283. though there's

  1284. just been a

  1285. lot of tension.

  1286. And so they

  1287. went to their

  1288. father.

  1289. They rang him

  1290. up and said

  1291. dad I just

  1292. want to say

  1293. I'm really

  1294. sorry that I've

  1295. actually disrespected

  1296. you in different

  1297. ways in life.

  1298. And normally

  1299. the dad would

  1300. kind of just

  1301. brush it off or

  1302. do something like

  1303. that but he

  1304. didn't this time.

  1305. He actually

  1306. responded by

  1307. saying yeah

  1308. and I'm sorry

  1309. for some of

  1310. the things I've

  1311. done.

  1312. And there was

  1313. a beginning of

  1314. a healing process

  1315. which is what

  1316. God loves to do

  1317. in our family.

  1318. Do you see

  1319. saying sorry

  1320. is such a

  1321. powerful way

  1322. of honoring

  1323. God and

  1324. honoring our

  1325. parents.

  1326. Some of you

  1327. may need to do

  1328. that through

  1329. writing a letter

  1330. to them.

  1331. Some of you

  1332. may need to do

  1333. that personally.

  1334. And even if

  1335. you don't get a

  1336. great response

  1337. do it anyway

  1338. to honor Jesus.

  1339. Say sorry.

  1340. Third thing

  1341. say thank you.

  1342. You know

  1343. every birthday

  1344. every mother's

  1345. or father's

  1346. day

  1347. I write

  1348. well I've

  1349. actually

  1350. I've written

  1351. songs for my

  1352. parents.

  1353. I've written

  1354. letters to my

  1355. parents.

  1356. Poems to my

  1357. parents.

  1358. But often

  1359. one of the

  1360. things I'll do

  1361. is I'll write a

  1362. card and I'll

  1363. just say I

  1364. will detail the

  1365. things that

  1366. actually I really

  1367. appreciate about

  1368. them.

  1369. Make a list

  1370. of them.

  1371. You know I've

  1372. actually run out

  1373. of things because

  1374. I've done it so

  1375. often I've actually

  1376. I'm trying to

  1377. search my memory

  1378. for like more

  1379. things I can say.

  1380. Like mom I

  1381. thank you so

  1382. much that you

  1383. actually when we

  1384. had meals you

  1385. always served

  1386. everybody else

  1387. first before

  1388. yourself even

  1389. when we were

  1390. ungrateful.

  1391. Thank you.

  1392. Do you know

  1393. how powerful that

  1394. is?

  1395. And what you

  1396. can do is

  1397. father's day

  1398. coming up soon.

  1399. Write something

  1400. down and you

  1401. can even read

  1402. it out to

  1403. them.

  1404. I guarantee

  1405. God will use

  1406. that in a

  1407. powerful way.

  1408. Say thank

  1409. you.

  1410. Forgive.

  1411. Say sorry.

  1412. Say thank

  1413. you.

  1414. Ask them for

  1415. advice.

  1416. You know if

  1417. you're a youth

  1418. here even if

  1419. you've got the

  1420. most messed up

  1421. parents in the

  1422. world they

  1423. probably still

  1424. have quite a lot

  1425. of insight into

  1426. you.

  1427. So don't think

  1428. that your parents

  1429. actually are just

  1430. kind of annoying

  1431. old whatevers

  1432. fill in the

  1433. blank.

  1434. Your parents

  1435. actually know

  1436. you better than

  1437. you think they

  1438. do.

  1439. That doesn't

  1440. mean you have

  1441. to agree with

  1442. everything they

  1443. say.

  1444. But ask them

  1445. for advice.

  1446. That's a way to

  1447. honour them.

  1448. Finally pray for

  1449. them and look to

  1450. bless them.

  1451. How often do you

  1452. pray for your

  1453. parents?

  1454. Really how often

  1455. do you pray for

  1456. them?

  1457. Because when you

  1458. begin to pray

  1459. then you begin to

  1460. look for opportunities

  1461. to bless them.

  1462. Because some of us

  1463. actually we can be

  1464. dutiful children.

  1465. We've been dutiful

  1466. for a long time.

  1467. God doesn't just

  1468. want us to be

  1469. dutiful children.

1470. He wants us to be

  1471. loving children who

  1472. are actively looking

  1473. to bless our

  1474. parents.

  1475. And I don't know

  1476. what that looks

  1477. like for you.

  1478. It's not just going

  1479. through the motions

  1480. of family meals.

  1481. It's actually looking

  1482. how can I show

  1483. the kindness

  1484. that God has

  1485. shown to me

  1486. to my parents.

  1487. Honour your

  1488. father and mother

  1489. that it may go

  1490. well with you.

  1491. That your days

  1492. may be long.

  1493. Because we have

  1494. a great heavenly

  1495. father who loves

  1496. us and he wants

1497. us to be a conduit

  1498. of his blessing

  1499. to our families.

  1500. Let me just pray

  1501. for us.

  1502. And we're going

  1503. to come and take

  1504. communion in a

  1505. minute.

  1506. I want to invite

  1507. the communion

  1508. stewards to come

  1509. up.

  1510. But right now I

  1511. want you just to

  1512. think of what is

  1513. God saying to you?

  1514. How are you doing

  1515. with your own

  1516. parents?

  1517. Even as you think

  1518. about some of the

  1519. things that have

  1520. happened in the

  1521. past, where's your

  1522. heart towards them?

  1523. Maybe you need to

  1524. repent of the way

  1525. you've treated them

  1526. or ignored them.

  1527. Maybe you need to

  1528. repent of idolizing

  1529. them.

  1530. Maybe you just need

  1531. to come honestly

  1532. before God and just

1533. to be real about how

  1534. you feel about them.

  1535. Maybe you need to

  1536. be more active in

  1537. just saying thank

  1538. you.

  1539. Just ask the Holy

  1540. Spirit just to work

  1541. in your heart and

  1542. just respond in prayer

  1543. to him right now.

  1544. Möglichkeit he

  1545. just had to

  1546. oppose

  1547. a

  1548. man

  1549. who

  1550. you

  1551. in

  1552. and

  1553. who

  1554. have

  1555. this

1556. We're going to come to take communion in a minute.

1557. But communion is a time for rebellious children.

1558. For those of us who have treated our heavenly father badly, we haven't honored him.

1559. But there's a time where he shows you that your parents may have sacrificed a lot for you.

1560. They may be willing to give their lives for you.

1561. But they've never given their life like Christ has given his life for you.

1562. So that he can pour his love and his healing and his blessing into your life.

1563. To draw you back to himself.

1564. Your parents' love does not define you.

1565. If you're a Christian and you put your faith in Christ, his love, his father heart for you defines you.

1566. Father, we just pray that you would speak into our hearts.

1567. Heal our hearts where we are wounded.

1568. Encourage our hearts where we are indifferent.

1569. Fill our hearts with your love and your forgiveness that we can forgive with your grace.

1570. And as we take communion, I pray, Lord, that you would just minister again your kindness to us.

1571. That we are not orphans.

1572. But we are sons and daughters of the King.

  1573. In Jesus' name.

  1574. Amen.
