  1. Father, we confess before you that we have standards that we think your word should meet,

  2. and we, Father, have demands that your word should say things the way we want it to say these things.

  3. And we confess that sometimes we're afraid of what you say in your word.

  4. And we confess in all of this, Father, that we often aren't very conscious that these things go on in our lives,

  5. that we stand in judgment, that we refuse to marvel, that we are troubled and think you've made mistakes,

  6. that we think we can edit your word or improve upon it.

  7. Father, we acknowledge that we do not often know that we do these things.

  8. Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would come with might and power and deep conviction,

  9. that you would make us disciples of Jesus who are gripped by the gospel.

  10. And as we are gripped by the gospel, will you grip us, Father, with your word

  11. and bring your word deep into the very center of who we are,

  12. that we will live free, generous, and whole lives for the good of this city,

  13. for the furtherance of your kingdom, and for your great glory.

  14. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  15. Please be seated.

  16. So, here's the problem with the text.

  17. The text doesn't always begin with a problem, but sometimes it does.

  18. And today, clearly, is one of those Sundays where the text is problematic.

  19. For many of you, if you are listening to what Anna read about parents and children,

  20. there's many, many people in our culture that say that teaching like that

  21. is directly responsible for child abuse.

  22. To tell children they have to obey their parents without any type of qualification

  23. is to open the door to massive child abuse.

  24. And so, the expectation would be that I would start to try to show how,

  25. well, it doesn't mean this and doesn't mean this and doesn't mean this.

  26. But the fact of the matter is, child abuse is a problem in our society.

  27. It's a problem in every society.

  28. And so, if, in fact, the Bible does do something which encourages child abuse,

  29. that's a problem that we have to think about, we have to grapple with.

  30. But more telling, a more common thing that comes to me in coffee shops

  31. is that people will say to me,

  32. George, I can't be a Christian or I can't believe the Bible.

  33. Why would you trust the Bible when the Bible was so clearly complicit

  34. in the institution of slavery?

  35. The Bible was used to oppress slaves.

  36. And that Christians had to learn from other places

  37. that they should not support slavery.

  38. That the Bible either encourages slavery or it's silent in the face of slavery.

  39. And to be silent in the face of slavery is to be complicit in slavery.

  40. And so, how on earth are you going to try to deal with that?

  41. So, there's two big types of issues in the text before us.

  42. So, as I said, we're going to walk towards it, not away from it.

  43. So, if you have your Bibles, it's Ephesians chapter 6, verses 1 to 9.

    Ephesians 6:1–9

  44. One, interestingly enough, that people don't often realize

  45. when they make some of these complaints about the Bible

  46. is people often don't realize that the person they're complaining about,

  47. because Paul wrote this in about the year 60,

  48. he wrote it while he was in jail.

  49. He wrote it while he was in jail for following Jesus

  50. and proclaiming that Jesus was Savior and Lord.

  51. And there's other surprising things that follow from that

  52. as we look through the rest of the text.

  53. But let's just, well, just what I'm going to do,

  54. we'll read the first couple of verses.

  55. But I'm going to really begin with the slavery issue,

  56. and then I'll come back and, excuse me,

  57. talk about the children and parents issue.

  58. So, let's just begin with that.

  59. We won't spend a long time on these first four verses

  60. to get right into the slavery bit.

  61. But look, actually, there's something really important about slavery

  62. that's right there in the very first verse,

  63. but it doesn't jump out at us.

  64. Look at what it begins.

  65. Children, obey your parents and the Lord, for this is right.

  66. Now, just pause there.

  67. This is right is something which is actually quite significant for slavery.

  68. I'll draw it out in a moment.

  69. But if you come to the 8 o'clock service sometime,

  70. where we do the old 1662 Book of Common Prayer service,

  71. which is really from the 1500s, 1552,

  72. I think they added the word amen or something between 1552 and 1662,

  73. very little changes.

  74. But one of the things that we say in the service is we talk about it being

  75. our meet, right, and bounden duty that we would worship Jesus and serve him.

  76. And what this idea of meet, right, and bounden is trying to get at

  77. is it's trying to get at the idea that if, in fact, God has created all things,

  78. and so he is our creator and we live in a created order,

  79. there's certain things that just fit.

  80. They're just right.

  81. That's what the word meet means, M-E-E-T.

  82. It's an old-fashioned word,

  83. but it's trying to get this idea that it just fits.

  84. It's proper.

  85. It's proper.

  86. Not proper in terms of some hoity-toity upper-class sense,

  87. but it just is the way the world works.

  88. It's just like it's right that we eat food that's not spoiled.

  89. It's not right that we eat food that's rancid.

  90. It's right to drink clean water.

  91. It's not right to drink polluted water.

  92. There's just something right, whole.

  93. It fits with how things are.

  94. And that's what the word right means right there.

  95. That's the idea that that word right means,

  96. that there's something in the very nature of creation,

  97. the very nature of how the world is designed and maintained by God

  98. that makes it somehow right that children obey their parents.

  99. It's going to be very important in terms of what we say about parenting in a moment,

  100. but it's also very important in terms of slavery.

  101. But let's just get through the rest of the text.

  102. Look at verses the next.

  103. Oh, sorry.

  104. I jumped too quickly.

  105. Continue reading.

  106. Actually, I'll start with verse 1 again.

  107. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

  108. And now Paul is going to quote the Ten Commandments,

  109. one of the Ten Commandments.

  110. Honor your father and mother.

  111. And then he has a little bit of an editorial comment.

  112. This is the first commandment with a promise.

  113. End of editorial comment.

  114. Back to the Ten Commandments.

  115. The commandment that's part of the Ten Commandments.

  116. That it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.

  117. This is all part of children obeying your parents.

  118. And then he goes, he has something to say to parents.

  119. Just by the way, he says,

  120. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger,

  121. but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

  122. Talk about this more in a moment.

  123. Just the main thing to get out of this,

  124. this doesn't give moms a pass.

  125. The mom can provoke the kids because it just says

  126. the dads aren't allowed to provoke the kids,

  127. but the moms are.

  128. That would be the wrong way to take the text.

  129. But children, it would be both the mom and dad equally,

  130. but there's a direct, specific thing said to fathers.

  131. We'll talk about that in a moment.

  132. Let's get to slavery.

  133. And here's how it begins.

  134. And some of you are reading the ESV.

  135. You'll notice that my translation up here,

  136. my version up here, just slightly different.

  137. And I've changed just one word

  138. to bring out the literal term in the Greek.

  139. And here's how it goes.

  140. Bond servants.

  141. Some of your versions say slaves.

  142. Some of your versions say servants.

  143. Obey not your earthly masters.

  144. That's a good translation,

  145. but it's actually more literal to say

  146. your masters according to the flesh

  147. with fear and trembling,

  148. with a sincere heart,

  149. as you would Christ.

  150. Now, just sort of pause here.

  151. The reason I've brought out the original translation

  152. is that the word flesh

  153. usually is used in two different ways

  154. in the New Testament.

  155. And here it's being used in one of the two ways

  156. to emphasize frailty

  157. and finiteness.

  158. In the ancient world,

  159. the time that this was written,

  160. for children that actually managed to be born,

  161. okay,

  162. that's not talking about all the children

  163. who die through miscarriages

  164. and all the children who die in childbirth,

  165. often with the mom dying at the same time,

  166. but for children that are actually able to be born,

  167. only one out of two

  168. will actually have their sixth birthday.

  169. And in the time that Paul was writing this,

  170. in the city of Ephesus,

  171. most women will die before the age of 30.

  172. And most men won't live much longer than that.

  173. They might live till their 40s

  174. or something like that.

  175. But people don't live long lives

  176. as a general rule.

  177. And so one of the things in the ancient world

  178. is they were very, very, very conscious

  179. of how frail human beings are.

  180. And there was a word for it,

  181. this flesh, sarx.

  182. And so what Paul is saying here,

  183. it's actually,

  184. if you look at it then,

  185. you'll notice right away

  186. there's a bit of an irony here.

  187. There's a bit of a cutting down

  188. of pretensions for slave masters.

  189. And there's a bit of an irony

  190. even with the fear and trembling.

  191. But your fear and trembling

  192. around an earthly master,

  193. a master according to the flesh,

  194. a master who is finite,

  195. a master who is frail,

  196. a master who is weak.

  197. And that's how it describes masters.

  198. Not that masters are like gods,

  199. but that masters are of the earth.

  200. They are temporary.

  201. They are frail.

  202. They are finite.

  203. And then the Bible text continues.

  204. Not by way,

  205. verse 6,

  206. not by way of eye service,

  207. as people pleasers.

  208. In other words,

  209. so it said to slaves

  210. to obey your earthly masters, right?

  211. And then it goes on

  212. to describe how the slave

  213. is to do this.

  214. It's the Christian slave

  215. is not by way of,

  216. verse 6,

  217. of eye service,

  218. as people pleasers,

  219. but as bondservants

  220. or slaves of Christ,

  221. doing the will of God

  222. from the heart,

  223. rendering service

  224. with a good will

  225. as to the Lord

  226. and not to a human being,

  227. knowing that whatever good

  228. anyone does,

  229. this he will receive

  230. back from the Lord,

  231. whether he is a slave

  232. or is free.

  233. And then Paul addresses

  234. the masters,

  235. the Christians who own slaves,

  236. and he says,

  237. masters,

  238. do the same to them,

  239. to the slaves.

  240. Not that the slaves,

  241. the masters,

  242. have to obey the slaves,

  243. but that the masters

  244. are to also

  245. not be people pleasers,

  246. that they are to do

  247. the will of God

  248. from the heart,

  249. that they are to render

  250. service with a good will

  251. as to the Lord,

  252. and they are to act

  253. knowing that whatever good

  254. they do,

  255. they receive it back

  256. from the Lord.

  257. Those are the different

  258. commands to slaves,

  259. and here Paul tells

  260. the masters,

  261. do the same to the slaves.

  262. And then as well,

  263. stop your threatening,

  264. because in the ancient world,

  265. masters literally had

  266. the power of life

  267. and death

  268. over their slaves,

  269. knowing that he

  270. who is both their master

  271. and yours is in heaven,

  272. and that there is

  273. no partiality with him.

  274. So let's just think

  275. about this a little bit.

  276. The first thing

  277. to understand is this.

  278. When I was in university,

  279. it was,

  280. when I was in university,

  281. I'd become a Christian

  282. in grade 12,

  283. and I had lots of challenges

  284. to the Christian faith

  285. in grade 12,

  286. but I had a whole new

  287. type of challenges

  288. when I was in university,

  289. because it was in university

  290. that I met people

  291. who challenged me.

  292. Some of them

  293. were anthroposophists,

  294. some of them

  295. were from the Baha'i,

  296. some of them

  297. were liberal Christians,

  298. and they challenged me

  299. and said that in the Bible,

  300. the Bible doesn't teach

  301. that Jesus is God,

  302. and the Bible doesn't teach

  303. the Trinity,

  304. and they told me

  305. that the word Trinity

  306. isn't in the Bible.

  307. Now maybe if I go back in time

  308. and I replayed

  309. all the sermons

  310. that I'd heard

  311. going through church

  312. and youth group,

  313. maybe somebody in church

  314. told me that the word Trinity

  315. was in the Bible,

  316. but I couldn't remember

  317. ever hearing it.

  318. The first time I was told

  319. that the word Trinity

  320. doesn't appear in the Bible,

  321. I was told it by a Baha'i,

  322. and I thought they were wrong

  323. because the Baha'is aren't right,

  324. and so I went looking,

  325. and to my shock,

  326. the word Trinity

  327. isn't in the Bible,

  328. and to my shock,

  329. I was expecting

  330. that I could come up

  331. with two or three or four

  332. very, very simple,

  333. easy verses

  334. to show that Jesus is God

  335. and that the Trinity is true,

  336. and I couldn't find them,

  337. and I realized afterwards,

  338. and by the way,

  339. I love saying this

  340. to my Baptist friends,

  341. the reason I didn't surrender

  342. right away

  343. is because of tradition,

  344. that I knew

  345. that Christians

  346. had a tradition,

  347. that the Trinity

  348. is the right way

  349. to describe God

  350. and that Jesus

  351. claimed to be God,

  352. and so because I believed that,

  353. I kept looking in the Bible,

  354. and as I looked

  355. and looked and looked,

  356. and I'd look at Bible verses

  357. that said that this taught

  358. these different truths,

  359. but when I looked at it,

  360. it didn't seem to be saying that,

  361. and I realized

  362. what my problem was

  363. after it took a bit of time.

  364. What I was looking for

  365. was this.

  366. I was actually looking

  367. for something like

  368. the Creed in the Bible.

  369. I was looking for

  370. a passage in the Bible

  371. that said,

  372. you have to use the word

  373. Trinity to talk of God.

  374. Jesus is God,

  375. the Father.

  376. I was expecting

  377. a Creed in the Bible,

  378. and I didn't see

  379. the Creed in the Bible,

  380. and so at first

  381. it caught me by surprise,

  382. but then as I hunted

  383. and hunted and hunted,

  384. I started to understand

  385. how the Bible

  386. was communicating

  387. both of these truths,

  388. and in fact,

  389. I could literally,

  390. every sermon

  391. in the book of Ephesians,

  392. I could show

  393. how this text

  394. shows that Jesus is God.

  395. I could do it

  396. every sermon

  397. in the book of Ephesians

  398. and throughout

  399. the New Testament

  400. because it's actually

  401. part of the deep

  402. teaching of it,

  403. and the same thing

  404. happens when people

  405. look at slavery

  406. and the whole issue

  407. of how the Bible

  408. relates to slavery.

  409. What they're looking for

  410. is slavery

  411. is terribly,

  412. terribly,

  413. terribly wrong,

  414. and what you should

  415. be practicing

  416. is a type of

  417. socialist,

  418. democratic capitalism.

  419. Now,

  420. as soon as I add

  421. that last bit,

  422. you realize

  423. there's a bit

  424. of a problem

  425. with that

  426. because that wouldn't

  427. have made any sense

  428. to anybody

  429. in the first century,

  430. nor the fifth,

  431. nor the eighth,

  432. nor the twelfth,

  433. and it doesn't make

  434. a lot of sense

  435. to a lot of people

  436. in the world right now.

  437. But what you expect

  438. is you expect

  439. one thing,

  440. but actually,

  441. if you realize,

  442. okay,

  443. maybe the Bible

  444. is communicating

  445. this in a bit

  446. of a different way,

  447. just as I realize

  448. that it communicates

  449. the truth of the Trinity

  450. and the divinity

  451. of Jesus

  452. in a different way

  453. than I was expecting,

  454. and once you understand

  455. how it communicates it,

  456. you can see that it's there

  457. all the way through

  458. the New Testament.

  459. It's part of the deep

  460. structure of the New Testament

  461. and the entire Old Testament

  462. to understand

  463. the truth of Trinity,

  464. the triune God,

  465. and the divinity of Jesus.

  466. And so maybe the problem

  467. is that we're expecting

  468. it to say it in one way,

  469. but it's actually

  470. saying it in another one.

  471. And the other thing,

  472. and this I love to say

  473. to my non-Christian friends

  474. when they challenge me,

  475. because we all agree

  476. that slavery is wrong.

  477. But I like to challenge them.

  478. I like to mess with them a bit.

  479. And I like to say,

  480. you do realize

  481. that the most recent examples

  482. of,

  483. these are especially

  484. my atheist friends,

  485. you do realize

  486. that half of all

  487. of the slavery

  488. that goes on in the world

  489. right now

  490. is from atheists.

  491. Now that gets

  492. an interesting reaction.

  493. And they deny it.

  494. And I said,

  495. no, Soviet Union,

  496. Communist China,

  497. they all practice slavery.

  498. They're all atheist states.

  499. And they did it

  500. very recently.

  501. China might still

  502. be doing it.

  503. And I said,

  504. what about Islam?

  505. And if you look at it historically,

  506. Hinduism,

  507. Buddhism,

  508. all practice slavery.

  509. It's a human problem.

  510. So the question is,

  511. not just whether this is somehow

  512. just a Christian problem,

  513. and somehow if you're a Muslim

  514. or a Buddhist

  515. or a Hindu

  516. or an atheist,

  517. you get a pass.

  518. No, no,

  519. this is a far deeper

  520. human problem.

  521. And so the question is,

  522. does the Bible,

  523. is it the matter,

  524. the fact of the matter,

  525. and I don't deny

  526. that Christians

  527. throughout time have,

  528. if you go up

  529. and you look up the name,

  530. I can't remember his first name,

  531. his last name is Dabney.

  532. His books are still in print.

  533. He was considered

  534. a very, very, very

  535. deeply Orthodox Christian

  536. in the mid part

  537. of the 1800s

  538. in the United States.

  539. And the horrific thing

  540. is he wrote books

  541. defending slavery

  542. as biblical

  543. and it's abhorrent,

  544. and he was wrong.

  545. The question is,

  546. does Christianity

  547. need to bring in

  548. other ideas

  549. from outside

  550. for Christians

  551. to understand

  552. that slavery is wrong

  553. or is it actually

  554. something which is taught

  555. in the Bible

  556. that slavery is wrong?

  557. I mean,

  558. there's a bit of a question

  559. as to whether atheists

  560. need to bring in ideas

  561. from somewhere else

  562. to understand

  563. that slavery is wrong.

  564. Does Islam have to bring in

  565. ideas from somewhere else

  566. that slavery is wrong?

  567. Does Hinduism have to bring in

  568. ideas from somewhere else

  569. to understand

  570. that slavery is wrong?

  571. Does Christianity have to

  572. or is in fact

  573. a Christian teaching

  574. that slavery is wrong?

  575. That's an interesting question

  576. even with a text like this.

  577. So,

  578. what does the Bible

  579. actually teach?

  580. Here's my summary

  581. of what the Bible teaches.

  582. And I use the gospel

  583. but it could also be

  584. the whole counsel of God

  585. because I think you can see

  586. the same thing

  587. in the Old Testament

  588. but you can see it

  589. in this text

  590. which I'll try to show you.

  591. The gospel ennobles

  592. the slave,

  593. humbles the master,

  594. and dissolves slavery.

  595. The gospel ennobles

  596. the slave,

  597. humbles the master,

  598. and dissolves slavery.

  599. You see,

  600. slavery wasn't just

  601. sort of a bit of an addition.

  602. It wasn't like an accessory

  603. to the ancient world.

  604. And usually when slavery exists

  605. it becomes

  606. not just an accessory

  607. but it becomes

  608. an integral part

  609. of a set of beliefs

  610. and a worldview.

  611. A bit more,

  612. maybe not as much

  613. the case nowadays

  614. but definitely

  615. in the ancient world

  616. there's a whole worldview,

  617. a set of core beliefs

  618. that allow slavery

  619. to be seen

  620. as either reasonable

  621. or good.

  622. People will say

  623. that in fact

  624. slaves deserve it.

  625. In the ancient world

  626. you would become a slave

  627. because your parents

  628. had abandoned you

  629. when you were born.

  630. They would put you out

  631. and expose you

  632. to the elements

  633. so that you would die

  634. and a slave trader

  635. would go looking

  636. at the regular places

  637. where babies

  638. would be abandoned

  639. to die

  640. and they would

  641. take those babies

  642. they'd raise them

  643. and sell them as slaves

  644. and they would say

  645. well obviously

  646. the child deserves

  647. to be a slave

  648. the parents didn't

  649. even want him.

  650. You became a slave

  651. by getting into debt

  652. and selling yourself

  653. into slavery

  654. to pay off the debt.

  655. Surely the slave

  656. deserves to be a slave

  657. because they got into debt.

  658. Slaves,

  659. people would become slaves

  660. because they

  661. lost in battle.

  662. So they lost in battle

  663. surely they deserve

  664. to be my slave.

  665. I won,

  666. they lost,

  667. surely they deserve.

  668. I have other types

  669. of private property

  670. why isn't it right

  671. that I should be able

  672. to own a human being?

  673. If I can own a dog

  674. if I can own a cat

  675. if I can own a horse

  676. if I can own a house

  677. why shouldn't I be able

  678. to own another human being?

  679. There's nothing in nature.

  680. In fact,

  681. they would say

  682. that nature itself

  683. shows that some people

  684. are superior

  685. and other people

  686. are inferior.

  687. That some people

  688. are meant to have

  689. more property rights

  690. or more power

  691. than other types of people

  692. and that nature itself

  693. shows that there's nothing

  694. in particular human beings

  695. which mean

  696. that you shouldn't be able

  697. to own them as a slave.

  698. That there are in fact

  699. that we call them human

  700. and they look human

  701. but they are in fact lower.

  702. They don't have

  703. the full dignity of rights

  704. as a human being

  705. and nature itself shows that

  706. and the gods teach this.

  707. Religion teaches this.

  708. Reason teaches this.

  709. And it's just obvious

  710. to anybody

  711. that in fact

  712. it's right for one person

  713. to have a control

  714. over the other person

  715. because the other person

  716. is not a full person

  717. and does not have

  718. full rights

  719. and the gods

  720. and nature shows

  721. that it favors the strong

  722. and it favors the powerful

  723. and that's just right.

  724. Now by the way

  725. it's the same way

  726. they talk about abortion.

  727. It's the same way

  728. they talk about abortion.

  729. Abortion is the ugly

  730. slavery secret

  731. of the secular mind.

  732. And I don't say

  733. I don't mean to wound you

  734. if you are here

  735. and you've had an abortion.

  736. Jesus loves you.

  737. Come and speak to me.

  738. But the fact of the matter is

  739. you could take

  740. what I just said

  741. and you could look

  742. at abortion arguments

  743. and secular people

  744. the Supreme Court of Canada

  745. and all of the political parties

  746. accept the logic of slavery.

  747. There's a very interesting video online.

  748. Many of you have probably seen it.

  749. It's by a former atheist

  750. by the name of David Wood.

  751. He now runs something

  752. called Acts 17 Ministries.

  753. I encourage you

  754. to Google his conversion.

  755. If you can't remember it

  756. come and speak to me afterwards.

  757. And there's a very,

  758. very interesting part

  759. in that video.

  760. That's about 25 minutes in.

  761. 20 minutes in

  762. as he's described his atheism

  763. and everything like that.

  764. And he describes

  765. how he's lying

  766. in a hospital bed

  767. in a prison.

  768. And he describes

  769. that as he's lying there

  770. sort of beat up

  771. physically and mentally

  772. and all of a sudden

  773. he starts to look at things

  774. in a bit of a different way.

  775. And he describes

  776. three core beliefs

  777. of atheism.

  778. And as he describes

  779. these three core beliefs

  780. of atheism,

  781. he starts to describe

  782. how he's lying there

  783. and one day

  784. he begins to doubt

  785. these three,

  786. each of these three

  787. core beliefs

  788. of atheism.

  789. And he comes to the time

  790. when to his horror

  791. he realizes

  792. that he no longer believes

  793. or accepts as reasonable

  794. each of these

  795. core beliefs

  796. of atheism.

  797. And he has this very powerful

  798. way of describing it.

  799. He said that when you

  800. have to understand

  801. that these are core beliefs

  802. and it means the entire

  803. superstructure of my thought,

  804. the whole superstructure

  805. of my thought

  806. and all my arguments

  807. lies upon this

  808. super,

  809. upon this foundation.

  810. And when all of a sudden

  811. the foundation is gone

  812. the whole thing collapses.

  813. Mindful

  814. of the core beliefs

  815. of slavery.

  816. If you go back

  817. and you read,

  818. I'm not going to talk

  819. about it now

  820. but if you want to hear

  821. how I talked about

  822. husbands and wives

  823. you can listen to

  824. last week's sermon.

  825. If you go back

  826. and look at how Paul

  827. talks about husbands

  828. and wives,

  829. what does he do?

  830. He connects marriage

  831. to the doctrine

  832. of creation.

  833. That there's something

  834. about the marriage

  835. of one man

  836. to one woman

  837. which is part

  838. of the very way

  839. that God created

  840. the entire world

  841. to be.

  842. And he connects

  843. the institution

  844. of marriage

  845. to what Jesus

  846. does on the cross.

  847. And he connects

  848. the institution

  849. of marriage

  850. to what the new heaven

  851. and the new earth

  852. is going to look like.

  853. That there's something

  854. about the marriage

  855. of one man

  856. to one woman

  857. that just fits

  858. this level

  859. of creation,

  860. redemption

  861. and the future.

  862. And then if you look

  863. at how he talks

  864. about children

  865. and parents

  866. he uses this word

  867. right.

  868. That there's something

  869. just right.

  870. It just fits

  871. that it's natural

  872. that parents

  873. have the first

  874. and primary

  875. overarching

  876. responsibility

  877. for their own

  878. children.

  879. It's more important

  880. than the state's

  881. claim to the children

  882. that the parents

  883. have a direct

  884. God-given

  885. right connection

  886. to their children

  887. and that the children

  888. to obey their parents

  889. there's something

  890. right about that.

  891. It just fits

  892. with the created order

  893. and now you come

  894. to slavery

  895. and if you're

  896. in the ancient world

  897. you want to say

  898. that there's now

  899. just something right

  900. and fitting

  901. about slavery

  902. and it is

  903. not there.

  904. a huge

  905. foundation

  906. of the slavery

  907. mindset

  908. and it's

  909. not there.

  910. It's nowhere

  911. in the Bible.

  912. Nowhere

  913. in the Bible.

  914. In fact

  915. what does Paul

  916. do?

  917. He talks

  918. about masters

  919. not as if

  920. they're somehow

  921. standing in the

  922. place of God

  923. he calls them

  924. masters according

  925. to the flesh

  926. that they're weak

  927. that they're finite

  928. that they're temporary

  929. the complete

  930. opposite of an idea

  931. of something being natural

  932. masters are temporary

  933. they're fragile

  934. and it talks

  935. about the fact

  936. that the slave

  937. is obviously

  938. a Christian.

  939. What does this mean?

  940. It means that

  941. Jesus loved the slave

  942. so much

  943. that Jesus died

  944. for the slave

  945. and when the slave

  946. puts his or her

  947. faith and trust

  948. in Jesus

  949. that slave

  950. becomes

  951. if you go back

  952. and you read

  953. the rest of Ephesians

  954. and you talk about

  955. how everybody

  956. who gives their life

  957. to Jesus

  958. takes this new status

  959. it's as if God

  960. the heavenly father

  961. adopts this person

  962. and gives them

  963. it's as if God

  964. adopts them

  965. as a son

  966. with the full right

  967. of inheritance

  968. and that part

  969. of Ephesians

  970. we now discover

  971. all those things

  972. in Ephesians

  973. all these glories

  974. it talks about

  975. for a redeemed person

  976. it applies

  977. to slaves

  978. and the entire text

  979. is talking about

  980. how a slave

  981. can serve Jesus

  982. and the entire talk

  983. is about how

  984. slaves and masters

  985. have a

  986. common

  987. lord

  988. and the text

  989. very clearly

  990. says of masters

  991. that God shows

  992. no partiality

  993. none

  994. between the master

  995. and the slave

  996. all of the

  997. intellectual

  998. foundations

  999. the foundations

  1000. of slavery

  1001. are removed

  1002. all of them

  1003. the slave

  1004. is ennobled

  1005. the master

  1006. is humbled

  1007. and the foundations

  1008. that support

  1009. slavery

  1010. are dissolved

  1011. but it has

  1012. something more

  1013. here's a question

  1014. I have to look

  1015. at my time

  1016. but here's the

  1017. question

  1018. if you had to

  1019. choose between

  1020. inner freedom

  1021. and outer freedom

  1022. which would you

  1023. choose

  1024. we'd all choose

  1025. inner freedom

  1026. wouldn't we

  1027. now obviously

  1028. we'd rather have

  1029. both

  1030. we'd rather have

  1031. freedom to be able

  1032. to assemble

  1033. and speak what we

  1034. want

  1035. and we'd like to

  1036. have that

  1037. and inner freedom

  1038. at the same time

  1039. but if you think

1040. about it for a second

  1041. like you know

  1042. we're downtown

  1043. and you look at

  1044. look at the street

  1045. people

  1046. and you look at

  1047. so many of them

  1048. it's heartbreaking

  1049. you know

  1050. they have outer freedom

  1051. through the gazoo

  1052. the wazoo

  1053. you know

  1054. but the fact

  1055. of the matter is

  1056. there's a chemical

  1057. imbalance in the heads

  1058. of some of them

  1059. which means that

  1060. they have no

  1061. inner freedom

  1062. they're controlled

  1063. by their chemistry

1064. and you look at others

  1065. it's not that

  1066. all street people

  1067. fall in these three

  1068. categories

  1069. I'm not saying that

  1070. but a large number

  1071. of them do

  1072. but there's another

  1073. significant amount

  1074. of them

  1075. they've lost

  1076. their inner freedom

  1077. because of a drug

  1078. addiction

  1079. or they've lost

  1080. their inner freedom

  1081. because of an

  1082. alcohol addiction

  1083. or that there's

  1084. some other type

  1085. of chemical imbalance

  1086. within the body

  1087. which means that

  1088. they have a problem

  1089. with controlling

  1090. impulses

  1091. and you look at

  1092. these people

  1093. and they can walk

  1094. wherever they want

  1095. and I'm not saying

  1096. these people

  1097. as if I'm

  1098. it's not deriding

  1099. them at all

  1100. I'm just looking at

1101. it and we all know

  1102. we look at

  1103. we look at what

  1104. happens with

  1105. dementia

  1106. and Alzheimer's

  1107. that there can be

  1108. things that go on

  1109. within us

  1110. and inside of us

  1111. that take away

  1112. our inner freedom

  1113. and every single

1114. one of us would say

1115. if I had to choose

  1116. between outer freedom

  1117. and inner freedom

  1118. I want inner freedom

  1119. and you know

  1120. the other thing

  1121. is if you value

  1122. inner freedom

  1123. structures externally

  1124. which remove freedom

  1125. are problematic

  1126. they're problematic

1127. you look at this text

1128. and what does this text

  1129. do

  1130. what this text does

  1131. is it talks about

  1132. the inner freedom

  1133. of the slave

  1134. it talks about

  1135. the fact

  1136. that

  1137. the slave

  1138. can't control

  1139. the fact that

  1140. they're bound

  1141. can't control

  1142. the fact that

  1143. the master

  1144. will give them

  1145. certain orders

  1146. they can't control

  1147. the fact that

  1148. they belong

  1149. to somebody else

  1150. they can't control

  1151. that

  1152. and you know what

  1153. Paul writing something

  1154. wouldn't change that

  1155. but they can choose

  1156. their reaction

  1157. they can choose

  1158. to see that

1159. they can live a life

  1160. that brings glory

  1161. to God

  1162. they can choose

  1163. a life

  1164. that pursues

  1165. that which is good

  1166. knowing that

  1167. they're ultimately

  1168. serving the Lord

  1169. and you see

  1170. what the Bible text

  1171. is all

  1172. the gospel

  1173. is all about this

1174. the fact of the matter

  1175. is

1176. is that we human beings

  1177. are enslaved

1178. and are not as free

1179. as we think we are

1180. you know it's very interesting

  1181. in our culture

  1182. there's this double way

  1183. of looking at evil

  1184. on one hand

1185. often being able to get drunk

1186. is a sign of freedom

1187. but it's very very funny

1188. that in one part of a novel

1189. or one part of a movie

1190. we're being able to get drunk

1191. or sleep with lots of different people

1192. as a sign of freedom

  1193. at the same time

1194. later on in the book

1195. or in the next book

  1196. getting drunk

1197. is a sign of the fact

  1198. that you're bound

  1199. or being able to

1200. not being able to actually

  1201. keep your marriage vows

  1202. is a sign that you're bound

  1203. that there's something

  1204. problematic with you

  1205. and the Bible

  1206. doesn't describe freedom

1207. as the ability to do evil

  1208. although obviously

1209. you are free to do evil

1210. but the fact of the matter is

1211. is for you and I

1212. if you cannot do what is good

1213. if you cannot do what is true

1214. if you cannot do what is just

1215. if you cannot do what is merciful

1216. if you cannot do what is generous

1217. if you cannot do what is right

1218. if you cannot do what is whole

  1219. if you cannot forgive

  1220. you are not free

  1221. I am not free

  1222. I need freedom

  1223. it is for freedom

1224. that Christ has set us free

  1225. his presence within us

1226. the gift of the Holy Spirit

  1227. the fruit

  1228. the singular fruit

  1229. of the Holy Spirit

1230. what is the singular fruit

  1231. of the Holy Spirit

  1232. love

  1233. joy

  1234. peace

  1235. patience

  1236. kindness

  1237. goodness

  1238. faithfulness

  1239. gentleness

  1240. and self-control

1241. as the gospel grips us

  1242. it moves us

  1243. to be free

1244. and we know we are free

1245. when we can speak the truth

  1246. and know the truth

  1247. not speak lies

  1248. and know lies

1249. we know we are free

  1250. we are generous

1251. there is a thing in the paper

  1252. on Saturday

  1253. they are nameless

1254. I always read this thing

  1255. in the paper

  1256. about these financial things

  1257. and all that

  1258. and retirement readiness

  1259. just so you know

1260. I am on the Freedom 75 plan

1261. but I like to plan

  1262. long in advance

1263. and there is this couple

  1264. in the paper

  1265. their take home income

  1266. is $200,000 a year

  1267. $200,000 a year

  1268. and they can't live

  1269. within their means

  1270. and guess how much

  1271. and they travel

  1272. all over the world

  1273. guess how much money

  1274. they give in gifts

  1275. or charity

  1276. to other people

  1277. zero

  1278. zero

  1279. who is more free

  1280. a person who can't live

  1281. on $200,000 a year

1282. travels all over the world

  1283. but can't even live

  1284. within $200,000

  1285. or somebody making

  1286. a lot less money

  1287. who gives money away

  1288. who is more free

  1289. who is more free

  1290. the generous person

  1291. right

  1292. generous person

1293. and you know what else

  1294. in this text

  1295. which is so amazing

  1296. and it's not just

  1297. in this text

  1298. if you go back

  1299. and look throughout

  1300. the entire Bible

  1301. so here

  1302. how does Paul

  1303. present the gospel

  1304. time and time

  1305. and time

  1306. and time

  1307. and time

  1308. and time again

  1309. he presents the gospel

  1310. that God

  1311. the Son of God

  1312. sets aside

  1313. his glory

  1314. and divine prerogatives

  1315. and his divine splendor

  1316. and takes into himself

  1317. all the limits

  1318. of being born

  1319. in human flesh

  1320. and he ends up

  1321. bound

  1322. dying

  1323. a slave's

  1324. death

  1325. on the cross

  1326. and why

  1327. is he bound

  1328. dying a slave's

  1329. death

  1330. on a cross

  1331. so you and I

  1332. can be redeemed

  1333. and be free

  1334. and we don't get

  1335. what redeemed means

  1336. but every person

  1337. in the ancient world

  1338. knows what redeemed

  1339. means

  1340. redeemed

  1341. is when somebody

  1342. pays the price

  1343. so a slave

  1344. is no longer

  1345. a slave

  1346. that's what

  1347. redeemed

  1348. means

  1349. how does the gospel

  1350. dissolve slavery

  1351. God

  1352. the Son of God

  1353. is bound

  1354. and dies

  1355. a slave's death

1356. so that you and I

  1357. who are not

  1358. truly free

  1359. because we are

  1360. enslaved to sin

  1361. can begin

  1362. to lose

  1363. the bonds

  1364. of sin

  1365. in our lives

  1366. because Jesus

  1367. has redeemed us

  1368. out of slavery

  1369. and called us

  1370. to be

  1371. his child

  1372. that is the gospel

  1373. that is the gospel

1374. I need to wind it up

  1375. let's look back

  1376. at children

  1377. and parents

  1378. and I'll just

  1379. give us a couple

  1380. of sort of

  1381. exhortations

  1382. children

  1383. obey your parents

  1384. verse 1

  1385. children obey your

  1386. parents and the

  1387. Lord for this is

  1388. right

  1389. honor your father

  1390. and mother

  1391. this is the first

  1392. commandment with a

  1393. promise that it

  1394. may go well with

  1395. you and that you

  1396. may live long

  1397. in the land

  1398. basically

  1399. and then verse 4

  1400. fathers do not

  1401. provoke your children

  1402. to anger

  1403. but bring them up

  1404. in the discipline

  1405. and instruction

  1406. of the Lord

  1407. the gospel

  1408. ennobles children

  1409. and humbles parents

  1410. while giving parents

  1411. an important mission

  1412. remember in the

  1413. ancient world

  1414. it wasn't thought

  1415. of as wrong

  1416. to leave your

  1417. newborn out

  1418. to the elements

  1419. to die

  1420. how could anybody

  1421. reading

  1422. Ephesians

  1423. leave their child

  1424. out to die

  1425. the child

  1426. is given

  1427. this ennobling

  1428. task

  1429. of being able

1430. to live in a way

  1431. that pleases God

  1432. the child

  1433. is part

  1434. of the covenant

  1435. community

  1436. under the Lord's

  1437. authority

  1438. and care

  1439. and as the gospel

  1440. forms a child

  1441. the child

  1442. will be formed

  1443. to obey

  1444. and because

  1445. the Lord

  1446. is the Lord

  1447. and we are not

  1448. parents

  1449. who abuse

  1450. their children

  1451. are in defiance

  1452. of the Lord

  1453. are in defiance

  1454. of the Lord

  1455. and parents

  1456. it humbles us

  1457. we are not

  1458. allowed to just

  1459. provoke our kids

  1460. for the sake

  1461. of provoking them

  1462. well how do you

  1463. provoke your kid

  1464. here is the thing

  1465. one of the things

  1466. I said to all

  1467. of my kids

  1468. when they were young

  1469. once they got

  1470. to a certain age

  1471. but very very

  1472. very young age

  1473. I said to them

  1474. you are not allowed

  1475. to hit your mom

  1476. or dad in anger

  1477. now you know what

  1478. an 18 month

  1479. knows what that means

  1480. see I didn't want

  1481. my I didn't want

  1482. to stop my son

  1483. Jacob my son Jacob

  1484. and other ones

  1485. of my kids

  1486. I'd come home

1487. and he'd run at me

  1488. and start punching me

  1489. but it was how

  1490. he welcomed me

1491. okay he was having fun

  1492. we get to wrestle

  1493. but Jacob knew

  1494. when he was

  1495. punching me in fun

  1496. and when he was

  1497. punching me in anger

  1498. you know that

1499. at a very young age

  1500. moms and dads

  1501. you know when you

  1502. provoke your kids

  1503. right

  1504. I mean maybe not

  1505. when you say it

  1506. but afterwards

  1507. you go yeah

  1508. that was just

  1509. provoking them

  1510. I shouldn't

  1511. that's just poking

  1512. the kid to get

  1513. them going

  1514. shouldn't have

  1515. done it

  1516. so it limits

  1517. parents

  1518. it reminds parents

  1519. that they have

  1520. to answer to the

  1521. Lord

  1522. but here's the

  1523. mission

  1524. by the way

  1525. these

  1526. these instructions

  1527. it works in

  1528. an agrarian society

  1529. and it works

  1530. in a rich society

  1531. in a capitalist society

  1532. it's a very very

  1533. different

  1534. a very very

  1535. simple mission

  1536. and the Bible

  1537. understands

  1538. God understands

  1539. that kids are

  1540. different

  1541. some kids

  1542. have like

  1543. Tourette's

  1544. syndrome

  1545. some kids

  1546. are on

  1547. spectrums

  1548. some kids

  1549. have

  1550. they're just

  1551. wired to move

  1552. constantly

  1553. some kids

  1554. like to sit

  1555. still

  1556. but the bottom

  1557. line is

  1558. the mission

  1559. isn't that

  1560. you give your

  1561. kids as many

  1562. piano lessons

  1563. and hockey

  1564. lessons

  1565. and every

  1566. other lesson

  1567. in the world

  1568. the mission

  1569. is that you

  1570. raise children

  1571. who will obey

  1572. and who will

  1573. love Jesus

  1574. that's your

  1575. first commission

  1576. that's your

  1577. first mission

  1578. what does it

  1579. profit a parent

  1580. whose kid

  1581. knows how to

  1582. play the piano

  1583. knows how to

  1584. play the viola

  1585. can speak 53

  1586. languages

  1587. gets an A plus

  1588. and plays hockey

  1589. and plays soccer

  1590. and plays basketball

  1591. and plays everything

  1592. else and doesn't

  1593. know Jesus

  1594. than a kid

  1595. who just has fun

  1596. but knows Jesus

  1597. the mission's clear

  1598. and just to

  1599. wind up the

  1600. whole thing

  1601. none of us

  1602. have slaves

  1603. but every

  1604. single one of

  1605. us is in

  1606. positions where

  1607. sometimes we

  1608. have to obey

  1609. and sometimes

  1610. we're in

  1611. positions of

  1612. authority

  1613. and there's a

  1614. very direct

  1615. call out to

  1616. you

  1617. for those of

  1618. you who

  1619. have authority

  1620. whether it's

  1621. over a kid

  1622. or whether it's

  1623. over an

  1624. employee

  1625. remember that

  1626. one day you

  1627. will give

  1628. account to

  1629. how you've

  1630. acted to

  1631. Jesus

  1632. and how

  1633. you treat

  1634. the weak

  1635. is a deep

  1636. reflection

  1637. of the

  1638. state of

  1639. your soul

  1640. how you

  1641. treat the

  1642. person in

  1643. your workplace

  1644. that nobody

  1645. likes

  1646. and if you

  1647. join in

  1648. with them

  1649. in calling

  1650. them names

  1651. or putting

  1652. down or

  1653. making fun

  1654. of them

  1655. shame on

  1656. you

  1657. it is

  1658. revealing

  1659. what you

  1660. would do

  1661. with power

  1662. and we

  1663. have to

  1664. sometimes

  1665. in our

  1666. organizations

  1667. and in

  1668. life take

  1669. orders

  1670. and then

  1671. you can

  1672. read this

  1673. text and

  1674. meditate upon

  1675. it

  1676. there might

  1677. be very

  1678. little you

  1679. can do

  1680. in the

  1681. short run

  1682. around a

  1683. cruel and

  1684. oppressive

  1685. boss

  1686. in the

  1687. long run

  1688. in Canada

  1689. you can

  1690. quit

  1691. get another

  1692. job

  1693. but in the

  1694. short run

  1695. there might

  1696. be very

  1697. little you

  1698. can do

  1699. but you

  1700. can control

  1701. how you

  1702. react

  1703. and you

  1704. can seek

  1705. to act

  1706. out of

  1707. a good

  1708. will

  1709. remembering

  1710. that you're

  1711. serving

  1712. Jesus

  1713. first and

  1714. foremost

  1715. and he

  1716. sees

  1717. everything

  1718. that goes

  1719. on

  1720. and he

  1721. ennobles

  1722. your labor

  1723. and your

  1724. sacrifice

  1725. please stand

  1726. just you know

  1727. once again

  1728. if you're here

  1729. today and

  1730. you've never

  1731. given your

  1732. life to

  1733. Jesus

  1734. the gospel

  1735. wants to

  1736. ennoble

  1737. you

  1738. the gospel

  1739. will make

  1740. you free

  1741. it might

  1742. not give

  1743. you instant

  1744. victory

  1745. in fact it

  1746. won't give

  1747. you instant

  1748. victory over

  1749. all of the

  1750. things that

  1751. bind you

  1752. but the

  1753. presence of

  1754. the gospel

  1755. the presence

  1756. of Jesus

  1757. in your

  1758. life will

  1759. move you

  1760. towards

  1761. freedom

  1762. and if

  1763. you are

  1764. saying no

  1765. to the

  1766. gospel

  1767. and no

  1768. to Jesus

  1769. it is those

  1770. sources of

  1771. slavery

  1772. within you

  1773. because they

  1774. know the

  1775. sources of

  1776. slavery within

  1777. you and

  1778. around you

  1779. know that

  1780. if you

  1781. come to

  1782. Jesus

  1783. he will

  1784. dethrone

  1785. them

  1786. and so

  1787. there is no

  1788. better time

  1789. now than to

  1790. shut your

  1791. ears

  1792. to that

  1793. which wants

  1794. to keep you

  1795. from Jesus

  1796. and call out

  1797. to him

  1798. and say

  1799. Jesus be my

  1800. redeemer

  1801. I give myself

  1802. to you

  1803. there's no

  1804. better time

  1805. than now to

  1806. call out

  1807. for that

  1808. and for

  1809. the rest

  1810. of us

  1811. we know

  1812. those things

  1813. in our

  1814. lives

  1815. where we

  1816. are not

  1817. free

  1818. and this

  1819. is a good

  1820. time to

  1821. do some

  1822. work with

  1823. Jesus

  1824. calling out

  1825. to him

  1826. to bring

  1827. his healing

  1828. authority

  1829. to bear

  1830. in those

  1831. parts of

  1832. our lives

  1833. where we

  1834. are not

  1835. free

  1836. that the

  1837. gospel will

  1838. be more

  1839. real to

  1840. our hearts

  1841. and that

  1842. as the

  1843. gospel is

  1844. more real

  1845. to our

  1846. hearts

  1847. the

  1848. outflow

  1849. of

  1850. obedience

  1851. will

  1852. come

  1853. let's

  1854. pray

  1855. father

  1856. ask that

  1857. the

  1858. holy

  1859. spirit

  1860. would

  1861. come

  1862. with

  1863. might

  1864. and

  1865. power

  1866. and

  1867. deep

  1868. conviction

  1869. amongst

  1870. us

  1871. we

  1872. thank

  1873. you

  1874. father

  1875. for

  1876. your

  1877. word

  1878. we

  1879. thank

  1880. you

  1881. that

  1882. Jesus

  1883. became

  1884. a

  1885. slave

  1886. and

  1887. was

  1888. bound

  1889. that

  1890. people

  1891. like

  1892. me

  1893. and

  1894. those

  1895. of

  1896. us

  1897. here

  1898. and

  1899. our

  1900. friends

  1901. and

  1902. our

  1903. neighbors

  1904. and

  1905. people

  1906. to

  1907. the

  1908. ends

  1909. of

  1910. the

  1911. earth

  1912. that

  1913. as

  1914. Jesus

  1915. was

  1916. bound

  1917. and

  1918. died

  1919. a

  1920. be

  1921. delivered

  1922. from

  1923. slavery

  1924. and

  1925. be

  1926. made

  1927. free

  1928. in

  1929. Jesus

  1930. to

  1931. be

  1932. free

  1933. in

  1934. deed

  1935. to

  1936. be

  1937. free

  1938. to

  1939. be

  1940. generous

  1941. to
