  1. The scripture reading comes from Deuteronomy chapter 5.

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. Verse 1,

  4. And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them,

  5. Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today,

  6. and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.

  7. Then in verse 6,

  8. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt,

  9. out of the house of slavery.

  10. You shall have no other gods before me.

  11. You shall not make for yourself a carved image

  12. or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above

  13. or that is on the earth beneath

  14. or that is in the water under the earth.

  15. You shall not bow down to them or serve them,

  16. for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,

  17. visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children

  18. to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

  19. but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me

  20. and keep my commandments.

  21. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,

  22. for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

  23. Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy,

  24. as the Lord your God commanded you.

  25. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

  26. but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  27. On it you shall not do any work,

  28. you or your son or your daughter or your male servant

  29. or your female servant or your ox or your donkey

  30. or any of your livestock or the sojourner who is within your gates,

  31. that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.

  32. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt,

  33. and the Lord your God brought you out from there

  34. with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.

  35. Therefore, the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

  36. Honor your father and your mother as the Lord your God commanded you,

  37. that your days may be long

  38. and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

  39. You shall not murder, and you shall not commit adultery,

  40. and you shall not steal,

  41. and you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor,

  42. and you shall not covet your neighbor's wife,

  43. and you shall not desire your neighbor's house,

  44. his field, or his male servant, or his female servant,

  45. his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.

  46. This is the word of God.

  47. Thank you, Karen.

  48. Let's just pray briefly.

  49. Father, as we come before your word,

  50. these ten words for abundant life,

  51. God, we want to hear from you.

  52. Father, we are so aware that so many of these things

  53. touch on real points of pain in our life.

  54. I just think of last week as we spoke about relating to our parents,

  55. as we think this week about what does it mean to honor life,

  56. and the weeks to come, God, as we deal with these real areas of life

  57. that so many of us have experienced pain and hardship.

  58. God, we pray for your grace to wash over us.

  59. God, we pray that you will speak to us.

  60. We pray that we will see the good news of Jesus in these words,

  61. these ten commandments.

  62. God, I pray for this morning.

  63. God, I want you to soften our hearts, Lord.

  64. We want to meet with you and encounter you and your word.

  65. And so, God, won't you open our hearts,

  66. won't you impress upon us your greatness and your glory,

  67. your majesty, but also your mercy and your grace.

  68. God, I pray.

  69. Come help us, we pray, in your wonderful and powerful name.

  70. Amen.

  71. Amen.

  72. Amen.

  73. Okay, so once again, welcome.

  74. If you are in the overflow room, welcome to you.

  75. If you're at the community center or at home or somewhere else in the world,

  76. welcome to those of us at Ebenezer.

  77. A very warm welcome to you as well.

  78. We are, as a church, working through this very famous body of teaching

  79. called the Ten Commandments.

  80. And these ten words that God gives to his people

  81. for their abundance and their flourishing,

  82. for their well-being.

  83. And these ten commandments are broken up into two groups.

  84. The first four have to do with our relationship with God.

  85. And in them, God says, unequivocally,

  86. I want you to honor me and worship me alone.

  87. I want to be first in your heart.

  88. Make sure that I'm supreme and preeminent in your heart.

  89. Have no other gods beside me.

  90. He says that we are to honor him and glorify his name.

  91. And he actually commands us to set aside a set period of time each week

  92. where we rest but also reorientate our hearts to him,

  93. where we worship him.

  94. And then the next six commandments all have to do with the way we relate to other people.

  95. And so last week we looked at how we relate to our parents,

  96. and that was a challenging one.

  97. And today we look at this sixth commandment,

  98. and in the Hebrew language it's just two words.

  99. It says, not murder.

  100. Do not murder.

  101. And so I think that's probably all I want to say today.

  102. Please, let's not murder anybody this week,

  103. and let's take communion, okay?

  104. No, the sixth commandment is a little bit more complicated than that.

  105. And so let's dive in and see what God has to say in this passage.

  106. The ten commandments have fallen on hard times recently.

  107. Not too many people think that the ten commandments are that applicable to our life.

  108. But this one, the sixth commandment,

  109. is one that most people still think we should try and obey.

  110. I heard recently there was a poll,

  111. and 78% of people said that the sixth commandment is still a good law.

  112. It should still be obeyed and honored in society.

  113. I'm a little nervous about the other 22% that weren't so sure about that.

  114. Let's hope they don't live in Hong Kong, right?

  115. But this seems like a pretty straightforward one.

  116. Do not murder.

  117. Let's dive in and see what is God's heart behind it.

  118. And so this morning there are four things I want us to see.

  119. I want us to see God's heart behind the commandment,

  120. God's scope.

  121. In other words, what is the extent or the limit of the command?

  122. What is God actually saying?

  123. Thirdly, our hearts.

  124. And fourthly, our hope.

  125. Okay, so God's heart, God's scope, our hearts, and our hope.

  126. Okay, let's dive in.

  127. So firstly, God's heart.

  128. Now, as we said, for most people, this command is pretty straightforward.

  129. It's not a good idea to go around killing people, murdering people.

  130. That's not a good society to live in.

  131. It's not the kind of society we want to raise our children in.

  132. But in the Bible, the reason why God gives this command is actually far more profound than just utilitarian ethics.

  133. It's far more than just pragmatism.

  134. Actually, the reason for this command is deeply theological.

  135. It has something to do with God's heart.

  136. And the reason why God is against murder is because human beings are not just a matter of flesh and blood.

  137. Human beings are not just carbon atoms or DNA strands that come together.

  138. Each human being has been knitted together by God, created by God, by his will, and brought into existence by his will and for his pleasure.

  139. Each human being is God's handiwork, his artistry, his craftsmanship that displays something of his nature and his character.

  140. So think about this.

  141. Imagine you go to a world-class art museum.

  142. You go to the Tate Modern in London or the Louvre in Paris.

  143. And you see a piece of art and you think, that art doesn't speak to me at all.

  144. I mean, what is this rubbish, right?

  145. And you decide to pull out your cutting knife and you shred this piece of artwork.

  146. What's going to happen to you?

  147. Sirens, alarm, the police are going to jump on you.

  148. You're going to soon find out what it looks like to destroy somebody else's famous, beautiful artwork.

  149. Friends, God says that each human life, each human being, irrespective of how we feel or think about them, is his artwork, his craftsmanship, his artistry that he has brought into existence by his own will.

  150. But even more importantly than this, the Bible says that each human being, each human life is one of supreme value and worth because every human being is made in the image of God and carries something of the image of God on them.

  151. And what that means is that every human being, admittedly in our fallen, broken, sinful way, every human being carries something of the nature and there's an image of who God is and carries his unique fingerprint, his signature.

  152. Every human being houses God's glory to some degree.

  153. No matter what your ethnicity, no matter what your background or the color of your skin, no matter your socioeconomic status, whether you're a billionaire or you sweep the streets for a living,

  154. no matter what your personality is, whether you're very kind and gracious or you're obnoxious and rude,

  155. every human being has indescribable value and worth and dignity because every human being is created as an image bearer, a representative of who God is, of the unrivaled supreme God almighty,

  156. the majestic God who is seated on the throne.

  157. Every one of us carries something of a representation of him in our being.

  158. I'm sure you've seen this on the news.

  159. We haven't seen this in Hong Kong recently and I think that's a good thing.

  160. But in some countries, when there are big protests, especially political protests, you'll see that some countries, the people will build an effigy.

  161. An effigy is like a paper statue of, let's say, either their leader or maybe an opposing leader, the leader of a country that they don't like.

  162. They'll build this paper statue, an image, a figure of a world leader, and then they'll march it through the streets singing and chanting,

  163. and what will they do at the end?

  164. They'll burn it, right?

  165. That's right.

  166. They'll burn it.

  167. Now, why do people do that?

  168. Because it's the ultimate insult.

  169. It's the ultimate insult to take an image of somebody and to destroy it.

  170. I don't know if you remember when Saddam Hussein was toppled.

  171. One of the things, the street scenes afterwards, there was a big statue of him in the center of Iraq.

  172. And people climbed up on the statue and grabbed their sandal off their feet and would beat the face of the statue.

  173. To destroy or to insult the image of somebody is the ultimate offense.

  174. Friends, God says that every human being, from those that are still in their mother's womb to those who are on their deathbeds,

  175. all people, all persons carry something of the image of God in them and are therefore supremely valuable, have dignity and worth and respect.

  176. All human life is precious.

  177. And when we directly oppose somebody or slander somebody, when we deride them or we call them names like somebody's useless or they're a piece of rubbish,

  178. we're not just deriding a person that we disagree with.

  179. We're taking something of the nature and the image of God, that which that person represents,

  180. and are slandering or shredding the character and the assassinating the character of God.

  181. All people carry the image of God in them.

  182. All people are persons for whom ultimately Jesus died on the cross.

  183. Okay, so that's the heart of God behind this command.

  184. What is the scope of this command, secondly?

  185. So this command, as we said, is two words.

  186. Lo ratzach, not murder.

  187. But what does that actually mean?

  188. What does that involve?

  189. In the Old Testament, in the Hebrew Bible, there are seven or eight words for killing or ending someone's life or murder.

  190. And the word in this command is a very specific word.

  191. It's the word ratzach.

  192. And it doesn't just refer to ending life in general, per se.

  193. It refers to taking the unjustly taking an innocent life.

  194. Okay?

  195. The unjust taking of an innocent life.

  196. So in the Old Testament, in the Bible, God actually makes provision.

  197. There are times when it is not contrary to his will to take another life.

  198. At times in the Bible, when you're defending yourself, you're not responsible if another person loses their life.

  199. And the obvious example of this is self-defense.

  200. So in Exodus 22, it says if somebody breaks into your house in the middle of the night and wants to steal something and you get into a confrontation and that person ends up dying,

  201. you are not culpable for that person's life under the sixth commandment.

  202. It's self-defense.

  203. Now interestingly, it actually says in Exodus 22, if this happens in broad daylight and you kill the person, well then things change.

  204. And the motivation for that is in broad daylight, you might be able to call for help.

  205. There are other witnesses that can come and help you.

  206. But in the middle of the night, you're caught off God, you're defending yourself and someone dies.

  207. God's word says actually you're not culpable under the sixth commandment.

  208. Because we are required to defend our family and those that we are responsible for.

  209. Now that's true on an individual level, but it's also true on a national level.

  210. And so actually in the Old Testament, the word ratzach, our Hebrew word here, is never used when dealing with legal matters.

  211. And what that means is that in the Old Testament, capital punishment doesn't fall under the sixth commandment.

  212. Now I'm not making a case for capital punishment.

  213. There are other problems with capital punishment.

  214. And the most obvious of those is that ethnic minorities, those that are without power, are often subject to most injustice.

  215. And so there's other reasons why we might want to be careful about capital punishment.

  216. But in God's word, capital punishment was considered a defense of the image of God.

  217. To murder somebody was so serious that it required the most severe deterrent and punishment for it.

  218. And of course this also didn't apply to military campaigns.

  219. So somebody comes and attacks your nation, you shouldn't just roll over and say, no problem.

  220. We have the right to defend what is ours, and that may mean attacking other enemy soldiers.

  221. So does that make sense?

  222. Okay, maybe I should go over that again.

  223. So Phil Riken, a theologian, says this.

  224. This is what the sixth commandment is about.

  225. On the one hand, it is forbidding all deliberate premeditated murder.

  226. Okay, that's pretty obvious.

  227. It's also forbidding manslaughter committed in fits of rage.

  228. So you lose your temper with someone, and you hit them, you beat them, you are culpable and responsible for that.

  229. But it also holds responsible those who cause someone's death through reckless or careless living.

  230. So drunk driving, somebody gets killed, you are culpable and responsible for that person's life.

  231. A mother or a father leaves and abandons their children, and their children pass away, you are culpable, you are responsible for that person's life.

  232. Now this all may seem pretty straightforward.

  233. I'm not sure how many of us have recently weighed up the pros or cons of committing manslaughter.

  234. Maybe you don't get on with a colleague or a boss.

  235. I hope nobody is contemplating taking a gun to work this week.

  236. This all seems pretty straightforward.

  237. But as thinking Christians in the 21st century, I want to urge us to really think about the sixth commandment very carefully.

  238. And to weigh up what God's word says around the unjust taking of innocent life.

  239. And the reason why this is so important for us to weigh up and consider is because we live in an age, increasingly,

  240. in which is becoming not only tolerant, but fostering deliberate taking of innocent lives.

  241. And where this is seen is socially acceptable.

  242. Some writers have described our age as the age of death.

  243. Friends, we live in a time in the world when taking with the sanctity of human life,

  244. the sacredness of human life is being made subservient to personal preference or personal convenience.

  245. Friends, let us be clear here that we're living in an age where legalized and state-sanctioned killing is often seen,

  246. is now framed within the narrative as a basic human rift.

  247. Where things like aborting of pregnancy, where things like euthanasia or doctor-assisted suicide,

  248. where even personal suicide are no longer seen as moral issues,

  249. no longer seen as something that God speaks to,

  250. but are seen as a matter of personal preference, as personal convenience, as a human right.

  251. Friends, all human life, from the zygote that is formed at the moment of conception

  252. to the person that is maybe suffering dementia or end of life at 110 years old,

  253. all human life, irrespective of the color of your skin,

  254. irrespective of your nationality or where you come from,

  255. irrespective of your mental capacity or your social status or what part of the world you come from,

  256. all human life is deeply, deeply sacred

  257. because all human life carries within it the image of God.

  258. God's handiwork that God created, God brings about,

  259. it grieves God's heart and it robs Him of His glory when we insult Him,

  260. when we decide who is worthy of life and who is not.

  261. See, this is challenging, right?

  262. It's easy to think, okay, let's not murder.

  263. But in our day and age, we need to think about these things really carefully.

  264. I know we've used this analogy, but imagine somebody comes to you and says,

  265. look, I'm going away, I've got a hundred million dollar painting,

  266. I want to entrust into your care, will you take care of it for me?

  267. You say, sure, take care of it, you put it on your wall.

  268. But after a little while, you think, this is not very convenient for me.

  269. I mean, it doesn't really fit.

  270. And you take it down, you store it away,

  271. and then eventually it's getting in the way and you decide,

  272. listen, I'm just going to trash it, right?

  273. It doesn't really fit with my heart.

  274. It doesn't fit with my style.

  275. It's not very convenient for me.

  276. What's that person going to say?

  277. Friends, God comes to us and He entrusts into our hands human life.

  278. Sometimes the very young, sometimes the very old.

  279. And we live in an age in which we feel like

  280. the stewardship of those human lives

  281. are a matter of personal preference,

  282. of personal freedom.

  283. Friends, God gives us this incredible responsibility

  284. to care for His people, His creation,

  285. His image bearers.

  286. And the point here is that

  287. if we allow our moral compass

  288. to be determined by the culture of our day,

  289. we need to be very careful

  290. because the cultural times are shifting

  291. so quickly, so rapidly,

  292. that as Malcolm Muggeridge said,

  293. what one generation considers a war crime,

  294. the next generation considers an act of compassion.

  295. And so if we take our moral and ethical cues

  296. from the cultural tides in which we live in,

  297. friends, we're going to be deeply confused.

  298. But over and against this,

  299. against the shifting sands of our culture,

  300. God speaks a word.

  301. And it's a word of clarity,

  302. it's a word of truth,

  303. and God's truth is always a word of freedom.

  304. God says that He is God and that we are not.

  305. He is the one who gives life and takes it away.

  306. And that each and every human life,

  307. from the one that is fertilized one day old

  308. to the person that is a few days or weeks

  309. from their deathbed,

  310. all human life is sacred and is in His hands.

  311. And human lives are not,

  312. the value of a human life is not determined

  313. by their utility to society,

  314. but the fact that we are image bearers

  315. of the one true majestic God.

  316. Earlier this week,

  317. I was reading Revelation 4,

  318. this amazing passage that,

  319. where God is on the throne,

  320. glorious, majestic,

  321. angels are falling down and worshiping Him.

  322. And all human beings,

  323. who are in heaven,

  324. fall down on their knees.

  325. And this is what they say,

  326. worthy are you,

  327. our God and King,

  328. to receive glory and honor

  329. and praise and adoration.

  330. This majestic God,

  331. friends,

  332. has chosen that we should bear His image,

  333. should house something of His glory.

  334. Friends,

  335. human beings' value and worth

  336. is not found in our utility to society,

  337. but the fact that we are made

  338. in the image of that God,

  339. that majestic,

  340. glorious God.

  341. Okay,

  342. so that's the scope.

  343. God's heart,

  344. God's scope.

  345. Thirdly,

  346. our hearts.

  347. Our hearts.

  348. Sorry,

  349. this got a little more heavy

  350. than I intended.

  351. Okay,

  352. well,

  353. let's keep going.

  354. Scripture actually has more to say

  355. about the subject than that.

  356. It starts off talking about murder,

  357. and when we apply it to our own lives,

  358. we realize we need to think about these things.

  359. But actually,

  360. there's another level,

  361. and that is that all of us

  362. need to grapple with our own hearts.

  363. In Matthew chapter 15,

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  364. Jesus is having a debate

  365. with some religious leaders,

  366. and the reason he's having a debate,

  367. and the reason he's having a debate,

  368. is because he's eating food,

  369. and he hasn't washed his hands.

  370. And for the religious leaders in his day,

  371. this is a serious offense,

  372. because he's eating food

  373. that is defiled,

  374. or ceremonially unclean.

  375. And so they say to him,

  376. you are defiling yourself.

  377. You are going to be ceremonially unclean,

  378. because you haven't washed your hands.

  379. And so the issue here isn't hygiene.

  380. The issue is religious

  381. and ceremonial acceptance before God.

  382. And so Jesus says,

  383. don't you realize,

  384. it's not what goes into your mouth

  385. that makes you defiled or unclean,

  386. it's what comes out of your mouth.

  387. And the disciples are a little bit confused.

  388. They say,

  389. what are you talking about?

  390. And so a little later,

  391. Jesus explains to him,

  392. and he says this,

  393. what you put into your mouth,

  394. the food that you eat,

  395. just goes into your stomach

  396. and is expelled.

  397. But what comes out of your mouth,

  398. the words that you say,

  399. the anger that you say,

  400. the slander and the backbiting,

  401. the anger and the vitriol that you say,

  402. those words don't just come from your stomach,

  403. they don't just come from your mind,

  404. actually they come from your heart.

  405. And that's the problem,

  406. says Jesus.

  407. Jesus says this,

  408. out of the overflow of the heart,

  409. the mouth speaks.

  410. For out of your heart comes evil thoughts,

  411. murder, adultery, sexual immorality,

  412. et cetera, et cetera.

  413. These are the things that defile the person.

  414. Okay, so you see what Jesus is saying there.

  415. He's saying,

  416. actually maybe you've never gone and killed somebody,

  417. but when we slander somebody,

  418. when we talk about someone behind their back

  419. and we shred their character,

  420. actually the same root is in our heart.

  421. John says this in 1 John chapter 3.

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  422. He says,

  423. anybody who hates his brother is a murderer.

  424. And that sounds pretty intense, right?

  425. You think,

  426. hey,

  427. I've never killed anybody.

  428. But actually when we foster bitterness and anger

  429. and hatred in our heart,

  430. actually the same root is common to both of those.

  431. So John is saying this.

  432. He says,

  433. it would be insane if somebody came here to church on Sunday

  434. and we sang this amazing song we sang earlier,

  435. good and gracious God.

  436. Holy,

  437. holy,

  438. holy,

  439. Lord God almighty,

  440. you're good and gracious God.

  441. God,

  442. I love you.

  443. You are first and preeminent in my heart.

  444. And then Monday to Friday,

  445. they are a serial murderer,

  446. right?

  447. That wouldn't make sense.

  448. Those two things are incompatible.

  449. Well,

  450. John's saying actually the same thing.

  451. When we come to church and worship,

  452. God,

  453. you are first in my heart.

  454. I love you supremely.

  455. Jesus,

  456. have your way in my life.

  457. But then we actually are fostering or harboring

  458. or growing hatred and anger and bitterness in our hearts.

  459. There's something incompatible about that.

  460. A couple of years ago,

  461. people used to read the newspaper

  462. and they'd read about some,

  463. let's say,

  464. violent crime that took place

  465. and say,

  466. you know,

  467. the education levels these days,

  468. what are they teaching children at school?

  469. Or maybe,

  470. people would read something in the newspaper,

  471. violent crime that takes place

  472. and they'd say,

  473. you know,

  474. black people

  475. or Asians

  476. or Hispanics

  477. or those Guaylos,

  478. right?

  479. You just can't trust them these days,

  480. right?

  481. In South Africa,

  482. the country I come from,

  483. in the 1970s and 80s,

  484. if you were Caucasian like me,

  485. you were taught

  486. that people with dark skin

  487. were lesser humans than you.

  488. It was part of the system

  489. that you were taught.

  490. And so people thought

  491. that violence and murder

  492. and rage and these things

  493. were a matter of either your ethnicity

  494. or your education

  495. or your intellect levels

  496. or your upbringing.

  497. But friends,

  498. don't we know

  499. that there are some very smart people

  500. that have got very advanced educations

  501. that have become murderers

  502. and killers of others?

  503. Friends,

  504. what Jesus is saying here

  505. is that the roots of these things

  506. isn't our education

  507. or the color of our skin

  508. or what nationality

  509. or ethnicity we come from,

  510. the root of these things

  511. is our heart.

  512. It's our heart.

  513. And so Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  514. Jesus is famously

  515. on the Sermon on the Mount.

  516. He says this.

  517. He says,

  518. We've all heard it said,

  519. Do not murder

  520. and whoever murders

  521. will be held liable.

  522. Well, that makes sense, right?

  523. But then he says,

  524. But don't you realize

  525. anyone who is angry

  526. with hatred towards his brother

  527. is also liable,

  528. is going to be held liable.

  529. Anyone who insults his brother

  530. is liable to the council.

  531. Anyone who says

  532. to his brother or sister,

  533. You fool,

  534. you imbecile,

  535. is going to be liable

  536. to the fire of hell.

  537. Friends,

  538. Jesus comes here

  539. and he says that actually

  540. the root of those things

  541. is true.

  542. And so maybe we've never

  543. gone and killed somebody,

  544. but actually in our hearts

  545. there's bitter

  546. and there's resentment

  547. that is growing

  548. and we're fostering.

  549. Jesus says,

  550. We've got a problem.

  551. Friends,

  552. can I ask us,

  553. anybody here

  554. not been angry

  555. with somebody

  556. in the last six months

  557. or twelve months?

  558. Friends,

  559. anybody here

  560. never read the newspapers

  561. and just said

  562. some outrageous things

  563. about political leaders?

  564. Friends,

  565. anyone here

  566. says we've never

  567. looked at anybody

  568. and thought,

  569. You imbecile.

  570. Can't believe

  571. you are like that.

  572. Friends,

  573. I know I have.

  574. And what Jesus

  575. is saying here

  576. is that the ten commands,

  577. Jesus doesn't say,

  578. Oh, the ten commands

  579. are a bit old,

  580. let's give it a modern upgrade.

  581. What he's doing,

  582. he's going right

  583. to the heart

  584. of the ten commands.

  585. He's opening it up

  586. and he's showing

  587. what is God's heart

  588. behind it.

  589. And what's God's heart

  590. behind is that

  591. though we may be innocent

  592. before a court of law,

  593. we may be very

  594. socially acceptable,

  595. for many of us

  596. our hearts are bitter

  597. and twisted,

  598. angry,

  599. even hateful,

  600. murderous.

  601. And Jesus is showing

  602. us here

  603. that murder

  604. doesn't come out

  605. of nowhere,

  606. that it starts off

  607. with this root cause

  608. and that maybe

  609. it never grows

  610. into full-blamed murder

  611. but actually there's

  612. a root that if

  613. left unchecked,

  614. the toxicity

  615. and the anger

  616. in our hearts

  617. is going to destroy us.

  618. Friends,

  619. maybe I can ask us here,

  620. do you find yourself

  621. easily getting angry

  622. when things don't

  623. go your way,

  624. when you feel

  625. disrespected

  626. or dishonored?

  627. Maybe you're towards

  628. your wife

  629. or your husband?

  630. Friends,

  631. what about when

  632. our children

  633. don't do things

  634. the way we want

  635. them to?

  636. Can I just

  637. publicly confess here,

  638. last weekend

  639. was not a good weekend

  640. in the Murphy household.

  641. On Friday,

  642. Clenna

  643. had a disagreement

  644. and it took

  645. most of the day

  646. to thaw out

  647. that disagreement

  648. and I thought

  649. things Saturday

  650. were pretty good.

  651. On Sunday night,

  652. I don't know

  653. what was wrong

  654. with me

  655. but our kids,

  656. they weren't even

  657. that bad

  658. but they weren't

  659. listening,

  660. had to speak

  661. a couple of times

  662. and I just

  663. got so frustrated

  664. so we spoke

  665. about it,

  666. we dealt with it,

  667. half an hour later

  668. they're still not

  669. doing what I want,

  670. they're still not

  671. listening and I

  672. absolutely,

  673. I just got

  674. really,

  675. really cross.

  676. Friends,

  677. I tell you that

  678. because I've got

  679. a problem.

  680. My heart is

  681. broken and wicked.

  682. Friends,

  683. and I guess

  684. I'm probably

  685. not the only one

  686. here.

  687. Friends,

  688. do we have

  689. a string

  690. of broken

  691. relationships?

  692. Every time

  693. something goes

  694. wrong,

  695. someone disappoints

  696. you,

  697. you explode

  698. at them.

  699. Friends,

  700. do you find

  701. yourself reading

  702. the news

  703. and calling

  704. political leaders

  705. offensive names,

  706. derogatory terms?

  707. Do we find

  708. ourselves calling

  709. people cockroaches,

  710. dogs,

  711. taking somebody

  712. made in the image

  713. of God,

  714. the beautiful

  715. person that Jesus

  716. died on the cross

  717. for and reducing

  718. them to derogatory

  719. names?

  720. Friends,

  721. do people

  722. at the office

  723. know that

  724. when the

  725. pressure's on,

  726. they better

  727. not interrupt

  728. us because

  729. they never

  730. know what's

  731. going to

  732. explode,

  733. what's going

  734. to come

  735. out of our

  736. mouths when

  737. we explode?

  738. Do we speak

  739. of people as

  740. valued representatives,

  741. sons and

  742. daughters of the

  743. great king?

  744. Friends,

  745. lastly,

  746. maybe bitterness

  747. and resentment

  748. has fostered in

  749. our hearts and

  750. it's been there

  751. so long we

  752. don't even

  753. realize.

  754. It's just

  755. become normal.

  756. We are numb

  757. to the bitterness

  758. and the resentments

  759. in our hearts.

  760. Friends,

  761. do we find

  762. ourselves being

  763. passively aggressive?

  764. We are jabbing

  765. and hurting

  766. people but doing

  767. it in a socially

  768. acceptable way.

  769. Friends,

  770. in a world

  771. which is

  772. absolutely

  773. charged with

  774. hatred and

  775. bankrupt of

  776. any sort of

  777. grace and

  778. mercy,

  779. where are we

  780. going to find

  781. hope?

  782. Where are

  783. sinners like

  784. me going to

  785. find hope?

  786. Where is our

  787. world going to

  788. find hope?

  789. And so lastly,

  790. our hope.

  791. Fourth thing is

  792. this.

  793. In the gospel

  794. of Jesus,

  795. Jesus gives us

  796. the resources

  797. to deal with

  798. our hearts.

  799. And the gospel

  800. not only gives

  801. us the grace

  802. we need for

  803. forgiveness,

  804. the gospel also

  805. gives us the

  806. grace we need

  807. to change.

  808. And so let's

  809. look at those

  810. two things.

  811. Firstly,

  812. the grace for

  813. forgiveness.

  814. Friends,

  815. I know that

  816. all of us

  817. here have to

  818. live with the

  819. choices that

  820. we've made.

  821. For some

  822. of us,

  823. there's been

  824. so many years

  825. of broken

  826. relationships and

  827. hurt and

  828. harm that

  829. some

  830. relationships

  831. are destroyed.

  832. Maybe it's

  833. destroyed your

  834. marriage.

  835. Maybe it's

  836. destroyed your

  837. relationship with

  838. your parents or

  839. your relationship

  840. with your children

  841. or the family

  842. member.

  843. And friends,

  844. the reality is we

  845. might need to

  846. live with those

  847. things.

  848. You can't just

  849. click your

  850. fingers,

  851. say abracadabra,

  852. and Jesus puts

  853. everything automatically

  854. right.

  855. We have to live

  856. with the decisions

  857. we've made.

  858. Friends,

  859. maybe for some

  860. of us,

  861. we've even

  862. terminated an

  863. unplanned

  864. pregnancy.

  865. Maybe for some

  866. of us,

  867. men here,

  868. we've pressurized

  869. our wives or

  870. our girlfriends

  871. or mistresses

  872. into having

  873. an abortion.

  874. Friends,

  875. those are the

  876. decisions we

  877. have to live

  878. with.

  879. But Jesus

  880. tells us that

  881. it doesn't help

  882. us to gloss

  883. over it or to

  884. excuse it.

  885. Jesus tells us

  886. that the way to

  887. be free from our

  888. past is to

  889. acknowledge it,

  890. to own up to

  891. it,

  892. and to repent.

  893. And Jesus

  894. starts off his

  895. ministry,

  896. when he comes

  897. and he's

  898. ministering,

  899. he starts off

  900. his ministry

  901. with these

  902. incredible words

  903. of freedom.

  904. He says,

  905. repent,

  906. for the kingdom

  907. of heaven is

  908. here,

  909. follow me.

  910. When we hear

  911. those words

  912. repent,

  913. we often don't

  914. think of those

  915. as good news

  916. words.

  917. We think of

  918. those as

  919. words of

  920. condemnation,

  921. words of

  922. guilt and

  923. shame.

  924. But Jesus

  925. actually brings

  926. these words,

  927. he says,

  928. repent,

  929. turn from

  930. that,

  931. turn to me,

  932. because these

  933. are words of

  934. life.

  935. These are words

  936. of freedom.

  937. These are words

  938. of hope.

  939. The only way

  940. to be free

  941. from our past

  942. and from the

  943. shame and the

  944. guilt is to

  945. come to

  946. Jesus.

  947. And so

  948. Jesus issues

  949. this invitation

  950. to be free

  951. from our past

  952. and he says,

  953. come to me.

  954. Jesus starts

  955. off his ministry

  956. with these

  957. incredible words

  958. of freedom

  959. and hope.

  960. He says,

  961. repent and

  962. follow me.

  963. But then

  964. Jesus ends

  965. off his

  966. ministry,

  967. how?

  968. On a

  969. rugged cross.

  970. And in

  971. between those

  972. times,

  973. the gospel

  974. tells us

  975. that Jesus

  976. set his

  977. face for

  978. Jerusalem.

  979. Jesus wasn't

  980. avoiding

  981. Jerusalem.

  982. At one point

  983. his disciples

  984. and his

  985. family members

  986. say,

  987. hey,

  988. let's not

  989. go to

  990. Jerusalem.

  991. They want

  992. to kill

  993. you.

  994. And Jesus

  995. sets his

  996. face for

  997. Jerusalem.

  998. Why?

  999. Because he

  1000. sets his

  1001. face for

  1002. the cross.

  1003. Friends,

  1004. Jesus ends

  1005. up his

  1006. ministry

  1007. on a

  1008. cross on

  1009. Calvary.

  1010. And the

  1011. reason he

  1012. goes there

  1013. is to

  1014. take my

  1015. sin and

  1016. my shame

  1017. and your

  1018. sin and

  1019. your shame

  1020. and the

  1021. sin and

  1022. the shame

  1023. of all

  1024. the world,

  1025. those who

  1026. would hope

  1027. and trust

  1028. in him

  1029. and he

  1030. would bear

  1031. the wrath

  1032. and the

  1033. judgment

  1034. and the

  1035. punishment

  1036. of God

  1037. in our

  1038. place so

  1039. that we

  1040. don't have

  1041. to.

  1042. Friends,

  1043. Jesus Christ

  1044. had the wrath

  1045. and the

  1046. judgment of

  1047. God poured

  1048. out on him

  1049. so that those

  1050. who hope

  1051. and trust

  1052. in him

  1053. won't

  1054. experience it

  1055. themselves.

  1056. And so

  1057. now,

  1058. friends,

  1059. because Jesus

  1060. dies on the

  1061. cross,

  1062. not as an

  1063. example of

  1064. humility,

  1065. not just as a

  1066. picture of

  1067. non-violent

  1068. politics,

  1069. but as an

  1070. actual atoning

  1071. sacrifice for

  1072. us,

  1073. now we get

  1074. to hear the

  1075. words of

  1076. love and

  1077. acceptance rather

  1078. than the

  1079. words of

  1080. condemnation.

  1081. Friends,

  1082. do you know

  1083. that if you

  1084. are in

  1085. Jesus,

  1086. despite your

  1087. sin and my

  1088. sin,

  1089. despite your

  1090. shame and

  1091. my shame,

  1092. that God

  1093. the Father

  1094. loves you

  1095. with the

  1096. same love

  1097. that he has

  1098. for Christ

  1099. the Son

  1100. because you

  1101. are in

  1102. Christ the

  1103. Son.

  1104. Friends,

  1105. in the

  1106. gospel,

  1107. the same

  1108. grace that

  1109. forgives us

  1110. is also the

  1111. grace that

  1112. changes us.

  1113. There's this

  1114. incredible line

  1115. in the book

  1116. of Proverbs,

  1117. Proverbs

    Proverbs 15 chapter mention

  1118. chapter 15,

  1119. I think it

  1120. is,

  1121. it says

  1122. this,

  1123. a gentle

  1124. answer

  1125. turns away

  1126. wrath.

  1127. A gentle

  1128. answer turns

  1129. away wrath.

  1130. Have you ever

  1131. experienced that?

  1132. There's somebody

  1133. whose heart

  1134. is so hard

  1135. and bitter

  1136. towards you,

  1137. so angry,

  1138. that no matter

  1139. what you say,

  1140. they're just

  1141. going to

  1142. respond with

  1143. anger.

  1144. You try

  1145. and have

  1146. a conversation

  1147. and they

  1148. just want

  1149. to kill

  1150. you,

  1151. right?

  1152. Maybe not

  1153. literally,

  1154. but you try

  1155. and talk

  1156. things through

  1157. with them

  1158. and they're

  1159. just bitter

  1160. and hard

  1161. and there's

  1162. nothing you

  1163. can say

  1164. to soften

  1165. their heart

  1166. until they

  1167. experience a

  1168. moment of

  1169. love.

  1170. Have you ever

  1171. experienced

  1172. that?

  1173. I experienced

  1174. that in our

  1175. house,

  1176. I remember

  1177. about a year

  1178. ago,

  1179. one of my

  1180. daughters,

  1181. I can't

  1182. remember which

  1183. one,

  1184. there's only

  1185. two,

  1186. right?

  1187. One of my

  1188. daughters was

  1189. absolutely losing

  1190. it,

  1191. absolutely losing

  1192. it,

  1193. something was

  1194. going wrong

  1195. and I was

  1196. just saying

  1197. that's unacceptable,

  1198. it's not how

  1199. we behave,

  1200. you go to

  1201. the bathroom.

  1202. So she goes

  1203. to the bathroom

  1204. and she is

  1205. furious,

  1206. she has smokes

  1207. coming out of

  1208. her ears,

  1209. absolutely steaming

  1210. and if I try

  1211. and say that's

  1212. not how we

  1213. behave,

  1214. you stop that

  1215. right now,

  1216. that's not going

  1217. to help anything.

  1218. So I go to

  1219. the bathroom

  1220. and I sit

  1221. down there

  1222. and I say,

  1223. Sierra,

  1224. Shiloh,

  1225. whoever it

  1226. is,

  1227. I say,

  1228. I think it

  1229. is Shiloh,

  1230. I said,

  1231. Shiloh,

  1232. I've got two

  1233. things to say

  1234. to you.

  1235. The first

  1236. thing is this,

  1237. I love you

  1238. and I'll

  1239. never stop

  1240. loving you

  1241. and there's

  1242. nothing that

  1243. you can do

  1244. in all the

  1245. world that

  1246. will stop

  1247. me loving

  1248. you.

  1249. I love

  1250. you when

  1251. you're angry

  1252. and I love

  1253. you when

  1254. you're not

  1255. angry.

  1256. I will

  1257. never ever

  1258. stop loving

  1259. you.

  1260. And then

  1261. we had a

  1262. conversation

  1263. about our

  1264. anger.

  1265. And two

  1266. minutes later,

  1267. we walk

  1268. out of the

  1269. bathroom

  1270. holding hands

  1271. and we're

  1272. best friends.

  1273. The Bible

  1274. says that a

  1275. gentle word

  1276. turns away

  1277. wrath.

  1278. Friends,

  1279. in the

  1280. gospel,

  1281. Jesus doesn't

  1282. come with a

  1283. word of

  1284. condemnation.

  1285. He doesn't

  1286. come and say,

  1287. you dirty,

  1288. rotten scoundrel,

  1289. you murderous

  1290. heart,

  1291. I cannot believe

  1292. you're like

  1293. that.

  1294. Didn't I

  1295. tell you to

  1296. love people?

  1297. What does

  1298. Jesus do?

  1299. He comes

  1300. and he says,

  1301. my son,

  1302. my daughter,

  1303. those of us

  1304. that maybe

  1305. have ended

  1306. a life,

  1307. those of us

  1308. maybe who

  1309. literally are

  1310. murderers,

  1311. those of us

  1312. who've got

  1313. such bitter

  1314. and resentment

  1315. and anger

  1316. in our heart,

  1317. he comes

  1318. and he says,

  1319. my son,

  1320. my daughter,

  1321. I love

  1322. you.

  1323. Jesus comes

  1324. with a

  1325. better word.

  1326. He comes

  1327. with a

  1328. gracious word,

  1329. a gentle

  1330. word.

  1331. God the

  1332. Father comes

  1333. to us and

  1334. says,

  1335. if you are

  1336. in Christ,

  1337. it is

  1338. paid in

  1339. full.

  1340. It is

  1341. totally

  1342. forgiven.

  1343. And that

  1344. word of

  1345. love,

  1346. friends,

  1347. will melt

  1348. our hard

  1349. and angry

  1350. hearts and

  1351. will change

  1352. us to become

  1353. the kind of

  1354. people that

  1355. he's called

  1356. us to be.

  1357. Lastly,

  1358. finally,

  1359. this.

  1360. Jesus gives

  1361. us a grace

  1362. to forgive

  1363. us, but he

  1364. gives a grace

  1365. to change

  1366. us.

  1367. In

  1368. Titus

    Titus 3 chapter mention

  1369. chapter 3,

  1370. it says

  1371. this.

  1372. The

  1373. apostle Paul's

  1374. writing,

  1375. and he

  1376. says,

  1377. previously,

  1378. we were

  1379. foolish,

  1380. disobedient,

  1381. deceived,

  1382. enslaved by

  1383. our passions.

  1384. We lived

  1385. in anger

  1386. and envy.

  1387. We were

  1388. hated by

  1389. others and

  1390. we hated

  1391. them back.

  1392. Sounds like

  1393. our world,

  1394. right?

  1395. But when

  1396. the kindness

  1397. and the

  1398. love of

  1399. God our

  1400. Savior

  1401. appeared,

  1402. he saved

  1403. us.

  1404. Not because

  1405. of righteous

  1406. things that

  1407. we had

  1408. done,

  1409. but because

  1410. of his

  1411. mercy.

  1412. That's

  1413. exactly what

  1414. we've been

  1415. saying,

  1416. right?

  1417. His

  1418. incredible

  1419. mercy.

  1420. And then

  1421. he goes

  1422. on to

  1423. say,

  1424. God

  1425. saved

  1426. us

  1427. through

  1428. the

  1429. washing

  1430. of

  1431. rebirth,

  1432. through

  1433. being

  1434. born

  1435. again,

  1436. by renewal

  1437. of the

  1438. Holy Spirit

  1439. that he

  1440. pours out

  1441. on us

  1442. generously

  1443. through

  1444. Jesus

  1445. Christ

  1446. the Savior.

  1447. Friends,

  1448. this is

  1449. what Paul

  1450. is saying.

  1451. He's

  1452. saying,

  1453. God's

  1454. grace

  1455. saves

  1456. us,

  1457. but it

  1458. doesn't

  1459. just wipe

  1460. away the

  1461. past and

  1462. say,

  1463. okay,

  1464. best of

  1465. luck,

  1466. you go

  1467. and live

  1468. your life

  1469. now.

  1470. God's

  1471. grace

  1472. saves

  1473. us,

  1474. but it

  1475. also

  1476. changes

  1477. us.

  1478. He

  1479. causes

  1480. us to

  1481. be born

  1482. again.

  1483. He

  1484. gives

  1485. us

  1486. a new

  1487. heart,

  1488. a new

  1489. operating

  1490. system,

  1491. a new

  1492. motherboard,

  1493. a new

  1494. DNA

  1495. inside of

  1496. our heart

  1497. that is

  1498. aligned

  1499. with his

  1500. heart.

  1501. And then

  1502. in addition

  1503. to that,

  1504. he gives

  1505. us the

  1506. Holy Spirit.

  1507. He

  1508. starts to

  1509. form us

  1510. and change

  1511. us,

  1512. and we

  1513. start to

  1514. become

  1515. the people

  1516. that he

  1517. wants us

  1518. to become.

  1519. No longer

  1520. angry,

  1521. foolish,

  1522. disobedient,

  1523. self-justifying,

  1524. self-righteous,

  1525. gracious.

  1526. He now

  1527. makes us

  1528. tender,

  1529. forgiving,

  1530. loving those

  1531. that revile us.

  1532. Friends,

  1533. in the

  1534. gospel,

  1535. God the

  1536. Father,

  1537. Jesus Christ

  1538. the Son,

  1539. pours his

  1540. love into

  1541. our hearts.

  1542. He says,

  1543. my son,

  1544. my daughter,

  1545. I love you.

  1546. And so

  1547. look what Paul

  1548. says here.

  1549. He says,

  1550. once we

  1551. lived like

  1552. this,

  1553. angry,

  1554. bitter,

  1555. hating,

  1556. and being

  1557. hated,

  1558. but when

  1559. the kindness

  1560. and the

  1561. love of

  1562. God came

  1563. to us

  1564. through

  1565. our

  1566. Savior,

  1567. he saved

  1568. us,

  1569. not because

  1570. of our

  1571. righteousness,

  1572. but because

  1573. of his

  1574. mercy and

  1575. his grace.

  1576. In 1

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  1577. Corinthians

  1578. chapter 6,

  1579. the apostle

  1580. Paul writes,

  1581. he says,

  1582. don't you

  1583. realize the

  1584. unrighteous will

  1585. not inherit the

  1586. kingdom of

  1587. God?

  1588. Murderers,

  1589. adulterers,

  1590. greedy,

  1591. swindlers,

  1592. and then he

  1593. says,

  1594. but such

  1595. were some

  1596. of you,

  1597. such was

  1598. I,

  1599. but we've

  1600. been washed,

  1601. we've been

  1602. cleansed,

  1603. we've been

  1604. justified,

  1605. we've been

  1606. set free.

  1607. Jesus comes

  1608. and changes

  1609. us.

  1610. Friends,

  1611. Jesus died

  1612. to not only

  1613. destroy the

  1614. penalty of

  1615. sin,

  1616. but to

  1617. also destroy

  1618. the power

  1619. of sin,

  1620. to change

  1621. us,

  1622. to make

  1623. us new.

  1624. In these

  1625. words are

  1626. words of

  1627. life.

  1628. God commands

  1629. us not to

  1630. murder,

  1631. not to

  1632. unjust,

  1633. take innocent

  1634. life.

  1635. That may

  1636. seem obvious,

  1637. but God

  1638. calls us to

  1639. think carefully

  1640. about that,

  1641. how that

  1642. works in

  1643. our 21st

  1644. century world.

  1645. But more

  1646. than that,

  1647. Jesus calls

  1648. us to

  1649. examine our

  1650. own hearts,

  1651. to bring

  1652. our hearts

  1653. before him,

  1654. to be

  1655. gracious and

  1656. loving,

  1657. gentle,

  1658. and compassionate.

  1659. Let's pray

  1660. together.

  1661. Heavenly

  1662. Father,

  1663. we come

  1664. before you

  1665. this morning

  1666. because we

  1667. so need

  1668. you.

  1669. God,

  1670. your word

  1671. convicts

  1672. us.

  1673. Father,

  1674. chances are

  1675. that though

  1676. all of us

  1677. are different

  1678. by way of

  1679. personality,

  1680. background,

  1681. culture,

  1682. ethnicity,

  1683. God,

  1684. there's something

  1685. that unifies

  1686. us,

  1687. and that is

  1688. that apart

  1689. from me,

  1690. our hearts

  1691. are broken

  1692. and deeply

  1693. sinful,

  1694. but in

  1695. you,

  1696. God,

  1697. you're doing

  1698. an amazing

  1699. miracle of

  1700. grace.

  1701. You're changing

  1702. us.

  1703. Jesus,

  1704. I pray for

  1705. my brothers

  1706. and sisters

  1707. this morning.

  1708. I pray that

  1709. you do

  1710. come and

  1711. change us.

  1712. God,

  1713. may our

  1714. hearts

  1715. reflect your

  1716. hearts.

  1717. God,

  1718. may we

  1719. honor and

  1720. love every

  1721. person we

  1722. encounter,

  1723. even those

  1724. that we have

  1725. radically

  1726. different ideas

  1727. and opinions

  1728. to,

  1729. those that

  1730. are on the

  1731. opposite side

  1732. of the

  1733. political

  1734. spectrum,

  1735. may we

  1736. love them

  1737. and serve

  1738. them,

  1739. knowing,

  1740. God,

  1741. that they

  1742. are your

  1743. image

  1744. bearers,

  1745. created

  1746. by you,

  1747. fashioned

  1748. by you.

  1749. God,

  1750. we pray,

  1751. come and

  1752. work in

  1753. our hearts.

  1754. Make us

  1755. gracious and

  1756. gentle,

  1757. we pray.

  1758. In your

  1759. wonderful and

  1760. your powerful

  1761. name,

  1762. Amen.
