  1. The scripture reading comes from Deuteronomy chapter 5.

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them,

  4. Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today,

  5. and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.

  6. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

  7. You shall have no other gods before me.

  8. You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,

  9. or that is on earth beneath, or that is in water under the earth.

  10. You shall not bow down to them or serve them.

  11. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.

  12. Visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

  13. but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

  14. You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain,

  15. for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

  16. Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.

  17. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

  18. but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  19. On it you shall not do any work,

  20. you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant

  21. or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock or the sojourner who is within your gates.

  22. That your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.

  23. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt,

  24. and the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.

  25. Therefore, the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

  26. Honor your father and your mother as the Lord your God commanded you,

  27. that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

  28. You shall not murder, and you shall not commit adultery,

  29. and you shall not steal, and you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor,

  30. and you shall not covet your neighbor's wife,

  31. and you shall not desire your neighbor's house,

  32. his field or his male servant or his female servant,

  33. his ox or his donkey or anything that is your neighbor's.

  34. This is the word of God.

  35. Thank you, Annabelle.

  36. Are we on?

  37. Hello? Can you hear me?

  38. Brilliant.

  39. Great. Thank you so much, guys.

  40. We're just so blessed by you as a church family.

  41. Just Etienne doesn't know how blessed he is yet to be part of Watermark,

  42. but we know how blessed we are,

  43. and just want to thank you so much for just walking with us right from,

  44. well, right from before Etienne was even an idea.

  45. So thank you so much.

  46. Let me just pray for us.

  47. Father, you want to speak to us.

  48. Open our ears to hear you.

  49. Open our hearts to be receptive to what you want to say to us.

  50. I pray, Lord, that you would come and speak with power into our lives.

  51. Show us yourself this morning, I pray.

  52. Teach us to be a community which lives under your word

  53. and loves your word and delights to obey your word.

  54. Father, I pray just take whatever I say now,

  55. and I pray that your spirit would just really bring what you want to say into people's hearts, Father.

  56. Father, so we love you.

  57. In Jesus' name.

  58. Amen.

  59. Great.

  60. So for those of you who are,

  61. this is your first time here,

  62. or whether you're at the community center,

  63. or whether you're in the overflow,

  64. or whether you're here,

  65. we've been going through a series in the Ten Commandments.

  66. And we've come to that place in the Ten Commandments

  67. where things begin to get a little bit more sensitive.

  68. Where we come to areas where some of us may have real struggles and real hurts

  69. and real areas where we wrestle with some of the things that God is saying in his word.

  70. And so what we want to do,

  71. like before I even share what we're going to talk about,

  72. which is do not commit adultery today.

  73. And in your bulletin, by the way,

  74. there's a mistake.

  75. It's not do not murder.

  76. It is do not commit adultery.

  77. But there may be areas which are going to be just touching on things

  78. which we can't share everything in this sermon.

  79. But we want to walk with you.

  80. So if there are things which actually come up from this,

  81. please don't just run away.

  82. Please come and see myself or Kevin,

  83. Sylvie, Eugenia, one of the staff,

  84. because we really want to walk with you through these issues

  85. to be the people that God calls us to be.

  86. So in 1631, there was a Bible that was printed.

  87. It was called the Wicked Bible

  88. because the printers missed out one word.

  89. It was the word not in this verse.

  90. It read, thou shalt commit adultery.

  91. Now, very quickly, it got taken off the shelves.

  92. But incredibly, it became very popular as a Bible.

  93. Everyone wanted to get their hands on it.

  94. Because people, though they knew that adultery was wrong in that culture,

  95. they secretly hoped that God would somehow accommodate

  96. to their kind of guilty pleasures in life.

  97. And I think that typifies a lot of in our society,

  98. this kind of tear between things that we think are maybe wrong,

  99. but actually the desires that we have.

  100. I mean, last year, you know, canto pop star Andy Ho,

  101. you know, Sammy Chang's husband,

  102. he was condemned widely for getting caught cheating.

  103. But I heard quite a lot of people going very sympathetically

  104. that when he apologised, he just gave in to desire,

  105. saying, oh, yeah, I understand.

  106. It's kind of natural, you know.

  107. Chimpanzees do it.

  108. So why can't we?

  109. And until 1971, I mean, Stanley Ho just died a couple of weeks ago,

  110. but polygamy was legal in Hong Kong.

  111. Even today, if you are, many people do business in mainland China,

  112. and there is a wife or a mistress or someone in mainland,

  113. and then here you have someone else.

  114. And if the spouse is accepting of that, what's the problem?

  115. Why has God got such a big deal with this?

  116. Well, what we want to do is have a look at this topic,

  117. and we want to talk about what is marriage.

  118. We want to talk about what is adultery.

  119. Then why is it such a big deal,

  120. and then how do we find freedom to obey this command?

  121. Okay, so that's where we're going.

  122. First of all, what is marriage?

  123. Marriage in Scripture is not a cultural man-made institution.

  124. It is a God-given, exclusive, lifelong commitment

  125. between one man and one woman,

  126. united together in a one-flesh relationship,

  127. with a new identity,

  128. which is in some way patterned and modeled

  129. after God's exclusive covenantal commitment to his people.

  130. And sex within that is the joyful self-giving of yourself to your spouse

  131. within that marriage covenant,

  132. primarily to deepen your sense of union and oneness together,

  133. and then secondarily for pleasure and reproduction,

  134. if biology allows.

  135. In other words, marriage and sex are gifts from God,

  136. but they are deeply spiritual signposts pointing beyond themselves

  137. to a greater reality of the nature and character of God himself.

  138. So just take the Ten Commandments.

  139. We've said before that they're actually like a big wedding ceremony.

  140. This is a relational covenant between God and his people.

  141. And they've got promises.

  142. They've got promises to be faithful to one another.

  143. And so throughout Scripture, from this point, and you move on,

  144. God keeps showing himself to be a faithful husband to his people.

  145. Let me, a couple of verses.

  146. Isaiah 54 says,

  147. For your maker is your husband.

  148. The Lord of hosts is his name.

  149. Ezekiel 16.

  150. This is an amazing passage where God describes his relationship with his people

  151. like somebody who's picked up a dirty, abandoned, ugly, unloved girl

  152. from the side of the road, and he's brought them to himself.

  153. And rather than just using her to meet his own desires,

  154. what he does is his heart is to restore her, to beautify her, to honor her.

  155. And so it says this.

  156. It says,

  157. About Israel, God's people,

  158. your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty

  159. because the splendor I had given you had made your beauty perfect.

  160. Do you see what he's saying?

  161. God's about purifying, cleansing, beautifying, restoring people,

  162. and restoring us into the glorious image bearers that he made us to be.

  163. You know, he made us to be beautiful and glorious.

  164. And his love towards that end is steadfast.

  165. That means it's not just a kind of dutiful,

  166. okay, we've got to kind of stay together for the kids kind of love.

  167. That's not God's love.

  168. God's love is he rejoices over his people with singing.

  169. It's a long-haul, promise-keeping, engaged, passionate commitment to his people.

  170. And marriage is a reflection of that.

  171. You know what the sex symbols of the Bible are?

  172. You know, the kind of romantic ideal that the Bible brings you.

  173. It's not like a steamy one-night stand that Hollywood would show you.

  174. It's actually a couple who have been married for 60 years,

  175. hand in hand, faithfully looking into each other's eyes

  176. through all the ups and downs they've been through.

  177. And at the end of it, with this glowing passion,

  178. saying to one another,

  179. you know that I love you.

  180. And the other person turns and says, yeah, I know.

  181. Because I've had 60 years of experiencing that.

  182. That's what the Bible's reflection of God's,

  183. just a tiny reflection of his faithful, passionate love.

  184. That's what marriage is meant.

  185. So what is adultery then?

  186. Well, the seventh commandment here is specifically referring

  187. to a married man or woman sleeping with someone

  188. who is not your wife or husband.

  189. It is breaking a promise with your body.

  190. You know, there's other laws about,

  191. deals with other areas of sex outside of marriage.

  192. But this one is particularly about unfaithfulness

  193. to your marriage covenant.

  194. And so one author says it's the social equivalent

  195. of breaking the first command to have no other gods.

  196. See, the most common image,

  197. do you know what the most common image for idolatry

  198. when Israel worships other gods in the Old Testament?

  199. The most common image is adultery.

  200. Just one example, Jeremiah 3 says,

  201. like a woman unfaithful to her husband,

  202. so have you been unfaithful to me, O Israel, my people.

  203. You see, since all the commandments flow out of that first one

  204. to have no other gods and to worship God alone,

  205. then to break the seventh command

  206. is to break the first command.

  207. In other words, physical adultery is idolatry.

  208. And idolatry is spiritual adultery against God.

  209. Okay?

  210. Because both of them, both idolatry,

  211. worshipping other gods,

  212. and adultery are like con artists,

  213. offering you products and saying,

  214. the grass is greener on the other side,

  215. just look over the fence.

  216. And it offers you what is not yours to take,

  217. and it promises you life.

  218. Just take the forbidden fruit.

  219. You know, it's like this.

  220. Your marriage is going through a rough patch.

  221. You feel unheard.

  222. You feel unloved.

  223. You feel disrespected, bored.

  224. And then someone comes along,

  225. and you just click with.

  226. And it seems that everything you wanted,

  227. the respect, the approval,

  228. all those other things you wanted,

  229. they seem to offer it.

  230. More than your spouse does.

  231. And if what you do is you'll say,

  232. well, let me see what that grass is like

  233. on the other side.

  234. Your heart is not just turning away

  235. from your spouse to fulfill you first.

  236. Sorry, it's not just turning towards that person.

  237. It's turning away from a promise

  238. that you've made to your spouse.

  239. And it's turning away from a promise

  240. you've made to God.

  241. So you're being unfaithful to God,

  242. and you're being unfaithful to your spouse.

  243. And you know where there's a culture

  244. where promises are broken,

  245. it creates a culture of fear,

  246. suspicion, and distrust.

  247. So when a pastor or a believer

  248. says, God is faithful and he loves you,

  249. but then you hear that he's been sleeping

  250. with his secretary,

  251. what happens?

  252. Don't many people start questioning

  253. the credibility of Christianity?

  254. They lose faith in God or in people

  255. because we know that actually our marriages

  256. are supposed to be a reflection

  257. of showing us something about God.

  258. But what if you're single?

  259. Okay, you go, hey, I'm not married.

  260. I'm not even tempted in this area.

  261. Are you free from worrying about this command?

  262. Somebody gave the right answer.

  263. Yes.

  264. No, because Jesus takes this command.

  265. I'm glad you got there.

  266. Otherwise, you can just walk out

  267. if you're single right now.

  268. Jesus takes this command

  269. and he goes,

  270. hey, it's fine.

  271. Don't worry about that, guys.

  272. It's like, this is New Testament.

  273. No, he doesn't say that.

  274. He goes, he actually makes it,

  275. like he ramps it up even harder,

  276. if I can put it like that.

  277. He goes,

  278. you've heard it said,

  279. you shall not commit adultery.

  280. Okay?

  281. We've just heard that.

  282. But I say to you

  283. that anyone who looks at a woman

  284. with lustful intent

  285. has already committed adultery

  286. with her in his heart.

  287. Thank you, Jesus.

  288. You just made things much harder.

  289. Because he's saying,

  290. if you follow the breadcrumb trail

  291. of adultery

  292. back to its source,

  293. there you'll find

  294. a heart condition

  295. of coveting.

  296. Say, coveting?

  297. How do you get that?

  298. Well, the word lustful intent

  299. here is the same word

  300. that is used in Romans 7

  301. to describe the 10th commandment,

  302. don't covet.

  303. You see, adultery

  304. is not just about

  305. who you're jumping into bed with.

  306. It's not just about marriage.

  307. Adultery is about desiring

  308. someone or something

  309. that is not yours to own.

  310. It's about,

  311. it's about sexually looking

  312. at someone

  313. or looking at someone

  314. for your own sexual gratification.

  315. You know, it's not wrong

  316. to appreciate somebody's beauty.

  317. That's a gift from God.

  318. But it's the second look.

  319. It's the lingering look.

  320. It's the movie in your mind

  321. which takes appreciation

  322. for someone made in God's image

  323. and making them

  324. into a piece of property

  325. for your own personal pleasure.

  326. It's actually failing

  327. to trust God

  328. to meet your sexual desires

  329. in his way

  330. and instead taking matters

  331. into your own hands.

  332. That's what adultery is

  333. in Scripture.

  334. So we've seen

  335. what marriage is,

  336. that faithful,

  337. passionate,

  338. beautifying love.

  339. We've seen

  340. what adultery is.

  341. And now I want to think,

  342. why is that a problem?

  343. Because some people go,

  344. okay, yeah, that's fine,

  345. but why is that an issue?

  346. Well,

  347. let's think back

  348. to what we said

  349. about even sex.

  350. And here's just

  351. a couple of things.

  352. Firstly,

  353. we can use people,

  354. adultery is using people,

  355. not serving people.

  356. If sex is actually

  357. meant to be

  358. about self-giving,

  359. not just about

  360. self-taking,

  361. do you know what?

  362. Sex is actually

  363. service.

  364. It's the best kind

  365. of service

  366. you can imagine,

  367. but it's service

  368. to somebody else.

  369. It's actually

  370. about deepening

  371. your relationship,

  372. your one flesh

  373. relationship.

  374. And though it's

  375. meant to be pleasurable

  376. in different ways,

  377. it's primarily

  378. serving your spouse.

  379. Which actually,

  380. by the way,

  381. means that

  382. you can actually

  383. get sex wrong

  384. even if you're married

  385. and you're doing it

  386. within marriage.

  387. Because you can be

  388. unfaithful

  389. by making sex

  390. all about yourself.

  391. So either,

  392. I see people doing this

  393. in a couple of ways.

  394. One is,

  395. you either withhold

  396. sex from your partner

  397. because you just

  398. don't feel in the mood

  399. for like

  400. a lot of time.

  401. or you actually

  402. demand sex

  403. because you are

  404. in the mood

  405. like all the time.

  406. And both of those

  407. get it wrong

  408. because what happens

  409. instead of us

  410. talking about it

  411. and thinking

  412. how can we serve

  413. each other,

  414. what happens

  415. it becomes

  416. this weapon of war

  417. rather than

  418. an instrument of love.

  419. Doesn't it?

  420. We use,

  421. not serve.

  422. I mean just

  423. at the heart

  424. of adultery,

  425. whether it's physical

  426. or at heart level,

  427. is actually

  428. a tyrannical dictator

  429. sitting on his throne

  430. not to serve people

  431. but to get there

  432. to use them

  433. to meet their own desires.

  434. You know,

  435. think of pornography.

  436. What's pornography?

  437. Pornography

  438. is non-relational,

  439. non-committed sex.

  440. It's using

  441. another human being

  442. made in the image

  443. of God

  444. not to honor them

  445. but as an object

  446. for your own

  447. personal pleasure.

  448. Isn't it?

  449. You know,

  450. it's Friday night,

  451. you're tired,

  452. you're bored,

  453. you're stressed,

  454. you're lonely

  455. and porn promises

  456. you an escape.

  457. It promises you life.

  458. It promises to fulfill you

  459. with just a click or two.

  460. Just like, you know,

  461. in the Garden of Eden

  462. the serpent comes

  463. to Eve

  464. and says,

  465. well,

  466. God knows

  467. if you eat of this

  468. your eyes

  469. will be opened.

  470. That's what porn promises

  471. and if you click

  472. you're saying to God

  473. you as my lover

  474. are not enough for me.

  475. I don't trust you

  476. to provide for me

  477. so I'm going to have

  478. to steal for myself.

  479. Do you know,

  480. pornography

  481. is actually robbery.

  482. I don't know

  483. if you've ever

  484. thought of that.

  485. It's grabbing for yourself

  486. what is not rightfully yours.

  487. Has anyone

  488. looked at pornography

  489. and afterwards

  490. been inspired

  491. to serve

  492. and lay down

  493. your life

  494. for other people?

  495. Anyone?

  496. I don't think so.

  497. No,

  498. it leaves you shameful.

  499. It leaves you

  500. feeling dirty inside.

  501. Why?

  502. Because every time

  503. you watch porn

  504. what happens

  505. you're committing

  506. a theft

  507. stealing the dignity

  508. and value

  509. of broken people

  510. when God

  511. created you

  512. saved you

  513. to serve

  514. to restore

  515. and to beautify

  516. people.

  517. people.

  518. Like if you just

  519. followed the scandals

  520. of the world's

  521. largest porn site

  522. porn hub

  523. have you seen that?

  524. The scandals

  525. of rape

  526. and child abuse.

  527. Can we not see

  528. that what we do

  529. in the dark

  530. has ripples effect

  531. all around the world?

  532. We use people

  533. not serve people

  534. that's why God

  535. says don't.

  536. But also

  537. what about

  538. another area

  539. what about

  540. the fantasy world

  541. in your mind?

  542. You see

  543. watching rom-coms

  544. which leads you

  545. to just fantasize

  546. about a man

  547. or woman

  548. who will just

  549. complete you.

  550. You know

  551. daydreaming

  552. about a celebrity

  553. or someone

  554. who you know

  555. who's going to

  556. become yours

  557. but you know

  558. they'll never

  559. really be yours.

  560. Who's at the center

  561. of your fantasies?

  562. Me.

  563. I'm on the throne

  564. and I want

  565. a whole load

  566. of beautiful servants

  567. to come and serve

  568. my desires.

  569. That's what we do

  570. with fantasy.

  571. That's why we're using

  572. not serving.

  573. God says don't.

  574. But then he also says

  575. it's adultery

  576. is slavery

  577. not freedom.

  578. You know

  579. the Ten Commandments

  580. starts

  581. with

  582. God saying

  583. I've brought you

  584. out of slavery

  585. and then he gives you

  586. the commands.

  587. In other words

  588. what he's saying is

  589. I've opened

  590. the prison door

  591. for you to walk out

  592. into freedom

  593. through obedience

  594. to these commands.

  595. To be a people

  596. who love

  597. like I love.

  598. But then

  599. adultery says

  600. no no

  601. stay in the prison

  602. and keep the door shut

  603. so nobody will find out

  604. that you're there.

  605. Stay hidden

  606. or maybe justify yourself

  607. by saying it works.

  608. But what do you think

  609. the prison is

  610. that adultery

  611. brings you?

  612. It's those desires

  613. that we have

  614. for approval

  615. for pleasure

  616. for control.

  617. just think about

  618. sex outside of marriage.

  619. You know

  620. a previous pastor

  621. of mine

  622. he said this

  623. he said

  624. I've married

  625. a lot of couples

  626. and

  627. you know what

  628. many of them

  629. were Christian

  630. and many of them

  631. would say

  632. yeah we know

  633. the Bible's teaching

  634. that sex outside

  635. of marriage

  636. is wrong

  637. but they've still

  638. been sleeping together

  639. for all the time

  640. and

  641. why are they doing that?

  642. He would ask them

  643. it's not because

  644. they lacked information.

  645. they all knew

  646. the right information.

  647. It's because

  648. there was a desire

  649. in their heart

  650. where they feared

  651. losing the other person

  652. or they wanted

  653. to just gratify

  654. their own desires

  655. and they would justify it

  656. saying things like

  657. I have physical needs.

  658. But it was amazing

  659. when it came

  660. for some of these people

  661. when it came to

  662. an incredible work opportunity

  663. how these so-called

  664. physical needs

  665. suddenly

  666. they didn't need it

  667. for months

  668. because that work opportunity

  669. came and they were

  670. totally sold out.

  671. Why?

  672. Because it wasn't

  673. primarily about biology

  674. it was slavery

  675. to an idol

  676. which could be replaced

  677. by another idol

  678. which came along

  679. and seemed to satisfy

  680. them more.

  681. But God says

  682. he gives you

  683. this command

  684. because he wants

  685. to set us free

  686. from the addictive

  687. nature of our desires

  688. to just self-gratify

  689. so that we're free

  690. to know how to love people

  691. and be patient

  692. and to be able

  693. to not just get

  694. instant gratification

  695. all the time.

  696. There's a freedom

  697. in that

  698. and you know

  699. without a marriage

  700. covenant commitment

  701. what we're doing

  702. is we're providing

  703. for sex

  704. we're providing

  705. a picture

  706. of a God

  707. who could walk out

  708. at any moment.

  709. A God who's just

  710. interested

  711. in playing with his people

  712. for a bit of temporary

  713. pleasure

  714. when actually

  715. the God we serve

  716. says I want to free you

  717. and I want to

  718. beautify you.

  719. So adultery

  720. it uses

  721. not serves

  722. adultery

  723. it can enslave

  724. not bring freedom

  725. last thing

  726. adultery

  727. can promise life

  728. but bring death.

  729. Do you know

  730. when self is at the center

  731. when we worship

  732. pleasure

  733. control

  734. or acceptance

  735. above God

  736. it doesn't give life

  737. it destroys.

  738. You know the story

  739. of David and Bathsheba

  740. in the Bible?

  741. it destroyed

  742. his adultery

  743. tore his family apart

  744. and you know

  745. I've got a friend

  746. one of my best friends

  747. growing up

  748. really close family

  749. and the father

  750. was just this amazing

  751. family man

  752. and then when my friend

  753. went to university

  754. suddenly he came out

  755. and said

  756. I'm leaving

  757. for another woman

  758. and they discovered

  759. that actually

  760. for seven or eight years

  761. this had been going on

  762. and none of them

  763. had known

  764. and it just

  765. tore them apart

  766. and some of you

  767. know that sense

  768. of being torn apart

  769. some of you

  770. feel that pain

  771. whether it's from

  772. your parents

  773. or whether in your

  774. own marriage

  775. and if marriage

  776. is supposed to be

  777. this mirror

  778. reflecting the beauty

  779. of God

  780. adultery is like

  781. taking a hammer

  782. to that mirror

  783. and shattering it

  784. and how many people

  785. do I know

  786. right now

  787. who are suspicious

  788. of marriage

  789. or commitment

  790. because of the fear

  791. of betrayal

  792. adultery

  793. it serves

  794. so it doesn't

  795. use to serve

  796. it uses

  797. it doesn't free

  798. it enslaves

  799. it doesn't bring life

  800. it brings death

  801. but how do we get

  802. free from this

  803. how do we get

  804. is there any hope

  805. for this

  806. in what is a very

  807. highly sexualized

  808. world that we live in

  809. Ray Ortlund

  810. who is a pastor

  811. in the states

  812. he preached a sermon

  813. on the book

  814. of 1 John

  815. and he came

  816. to this incredible

  817. promise

  818. in 1 John

  819. he says this

  820. if we walk

  821. in the light

  822. as he

  823. Jesus

  824. is in the light

  825. we have fellowship

  826. with one another

  827. and the blood

  828. of Jesus

  829. his son

  830. cleanses us

  831. from all sin

  832. and then he paused

  833. and he looked

  834. the congregation

  835. in the eye

  836. and he said

  837. I am a sexual

  838. sinner

  839. and he paused

  840. for a very long

  841. time

  842. remember the congregation

  843. said this

  844. at that moment

  845. in that interval

  846. of time

  847. I wondered

  848. if perhaps

  849. I was witnessing

  850. the last day

  851. of our church

  852. in Manuel

  853. Nashville

  854. looking back

  855. now

  856. I believe

  857. it's the first

  858. day

  859. of the new

  860. Emmanuel

  861. he continued

  862. I'm not

  863. cheating on my

  864. wife

  865. I'm not

  866. looking at porn

  867. but I am

  868. a sexual

  869. sinner

  870. if all the

  871. thoughts that

  872. went through

  873. my head

  874. this week

  875. were put up

  876. on the screens

  877. this morning

  878. none of you

  879. would want

  880. to be my

  881. friend

  882. brothers and

  883. sisters

  884. that's true

  885. of me

  886. and I think

  887. that's probably

  888. true of most

  889. of us

  890. but Jesus

  891. wants to

  892. bring

  893. not

  894. condemnation

  895. you see

  896. sexual sin

  897. hides in the

  898. dark like a

  899. cockroach

  900. but Jesus

  901. wants to bring

  902. it out into

  903. the light

  904. but don't

  905. we often

  906. fear

  907. like a

  908. cockroach

  909. getting exposed

  910. that God

  911. if we come

  912. out into

  913. the light

  914. he's going

  915. to crush

  916. us

  917. or we're

  918. going to

  919. get rejected

  920. by other

  921. people

  922. because if

  923. you knew

  924. what I was

  925. really like

  926. inside

  927. you wouldn't

  928. want to

  929. be my

  930. friend

  931. so I

  932. want to

  933. speak to

  934. those of

  935. us who

  936. know that

  937. we've

  938. actually

  939. fallen in

  940. this area

  941. maybe once

  942. maybe many

  943. times

  944. you know

  945. there's this

  946. incredible

  947. verse in

  948. the book

  949. of Hebrews

  950. Hebrews 7

  951. 25

  952. it says

  953. it says

  954. this

  955. Jesus

  956. is able

  957. to save

  958. to the

  959. uttermost

  960. those who

  961. draw near

  962. to God

  963. through him

  964. since he

  965. always

  966. lives to

  967. make

  968. intercession

  969. for them

  970. shame

  971. wants you

  972. to hide

  973. in the

  974. closet

  975. shame

  976. wants you

  977. to think

  978. there's no

  979. hope

  980. shame

  981. and

  982. don't we

  983. often think

  984. that Jesus

  985. we know

  986. Jesus is

  987. forgiving

  988. we know

  989. Jesus is

  990. loving

  991. but we

  992. think

  993. there's

  994. this little

  995. corner

  996. at the

  997. end

  998. where his

  999. love and

  1000. his

  1001. forgiveness

  1002. doesn't

  1003. reach

  1004. this kind

  1005. of dark

  1006. area in

  1007. our hearts

  1008. it doesn't

  1009. quite get

  1010. there

  1011. but this

  1012. verse says

  1013. Jesus

  1014. saves us

  1015. to the

  1016. uttermost

  1017. you know

  1018. do you know

  1019. what that

  1020. means

  1021. our sin

  1022. may be

  1023. to the

  1024. ends

  1025. of the

  1026. earth

  1027. his

  1028. grace

  1029. and

  1030. forgiveness

  1031. is to

  1032. the end

  1033. of the

  1034. universe

  1035. he saves

  1036. to the

  1037. uttermost

  1038. and he

  1039. doesn't just

  1040. say he

  1041. forgives

  1042. to the

  1043. uttermost

  1044. and then

  1045. leaves us

  1046. to try

  1047. and sort

  1048. it out

  1049. ourselves

  1050. and work

  1051. on

  1052. he says

  1053. he saves

  1054. to the

  1055. uttermost

  1056. that

  1057. means

  1058. he can

  1059. save you

  1060. from your

  1061. porn

  1062. habit

  1063. that

  1064. means

  1065. he

  1066. died

  1067. to set

  1068. you

  1069. free

  1070. from the

  1071. fantasies

  1072. that you

  1073. have

  1074. that

  1075. means

  1076. he's

  1077. given

  1078. everything

  1079. to enable

  1080. even the

  1081. adultery

  1082. in your

  1083. marriage

  1084. for God

  1085. to work

  1086. through

  1087. that

  1088. and to

  1089. save

  1090. you

  1091. in that

  1092. you see

  1093. he's in

  1094. the

  1095. restoration

  1096. business

  1097. he's in

  1098. the

  1099. beautifying

  1100. business

  1101. the

  1102. cleansing

  1103. business

  1104. because that's

  1105. the kind

  1106. of husband

  1107. he is

  1108. you see

  1109. some of you

  1110. may have

  1111. experienced

  1112. the pain

  1113. of adultery

  1114. in the past

  1115. and what's

  1116. happened even

  1117. in your marriage

  1118. you're still

  1119. together but

  1120. actually you've

  1121. you've kind of

  1122. settled for a

  1123. second rate

  1124. functional marriage

  1125. for the sake

  1126. of the kids

  1127. or whatever

  1128. Jesus didn't

  1129. die for that

  1130. Jesus died

  1131. to even save

  1132. your marriage

  1133. in that area

  1134. to bring beauty

  1135. out of the ashes

  1136. in that

  1137. because that's

  1138. the kind of

  1139. husband he is

  1140. that's to those

  1141. who have fallen

  1142. what about to

  1143. those who you

  1144. know you're

  1145. tempted

  1146. you know maybe

  1147. you started an

  1148. emotional bond

  1149. with a non-believer

  1150. or somebody else

  1151. and you know

  1152. it's not healthy

  1153. like don't wait

  1154. until you're

  1155. exposed

  1156. like Ashley

  1157. Madison

  1158. we need to

  1159. be a community

  1160. where we take

  1161. this so

  1162. seriously

  1163. you know what

  1164. Jesus says

  1165. he says

  1166. if your eye

  1167. causes you to

  1168. sin

  1169. just put some

  1170. eye shadow

  1171. on it

  1172. is that what

  1173. he says

  1174. no he says

  1175. if your eye

  1176. causes you to

  1177. sin

  1178. like rip it

  1179. out

  1180. like be

  1181. merciless

  1182. with that

  1183. thing

  1184. get ruthless

  1185. with it

  1186. you see

  1187. we often go

  1188. like yeah

  1189. but it's only

  1190. a coffee

  1191. yeah but it's

  1192. only a thought

  1193. yeah but it's

  1194. only a movie

  1195. but Jesus says

  1196. no no no

  1197. you run

  1198. like cancel

  1199. your Netflix

  1200. account

  1201. like delete

  1202. that phone

  1203. number

  1204. like text

  1205. others when

  1206. you're tempted

  1207. do whatever

  1208. it takes

  1209. not even a

  1210. hint of it

  1211. because you see

  1212. desire in the

  1213. heart looks

  1214. like a kitten

  1215. to start with

  1216. but you will

  1217. keep feeding

  1218. it it will

  1219. become a lion

  1220. and eat you

  1221. alive

  1222. and what we

  1223. need in this

  1224. church

  1225. is groups

  1226. of guys

  1227. and girls

  1228. who don't

  1229. just do

  1230. these kind

  1231. of vague

  1232. accountability

  1233. things where

  1234. we go

  1235. oh have you

  1236. looked at

  1237. porn this

  1238. week

  1239. any last

  1240. yes

  1241. okay do

  1242. better next

  1243. week

  1244. we don't

  1245. need that

  1246. we need

  1247. people who

  1248. are willing

  1249. to commit

  1250. to each

  1251. other

  1252. to be

  1253. there

  1254. night and

  1255. day for

  1256. each other

  1257. to help

  1258. each other

  1259. to walk

  1260. in the

  1261. freedom

  1262. that God

  1263. Jesus

  1264. has brought

  1265. for us

  1266. you know

  1267. people who

  1268. are going to

  1269. help each

  1270. other to

  1271. stare down

  1272. shame

  1273. and to

  1274. say I'm

  1275. not going

  1276. to live

  1277. under you

  1278. shame

  1279. Jesus

  1280. has cleansed

  1281. me

  1282. people who

  1283. are going

  1284. to walk

  1285. with each

  1286. other

  1287. and help

  1288. each other

  1289. to go

  1290. when temptation

  1291. promises us

  1292. things we're

  1293. going to go

  1294. no I'm not

  1295. going to buy

  1296. from your

  1297. promises

  1298. because your

  1299. promises are

  1300. fake

  1301. because in

  1302. Jesus I have

  1303. my acceptance

  1304. in Jesus there

  1305. is approval

  1306. my freedoms in

  1307. him he's my

  1308. faithful lover

  1309. and even if

  1310. I have to

  1311. wait maybe

  1312. I feel lonely

  1313. maybe I feel

  1314. bored

  1315. my God

  1316. says he

  1317. will satisfy

  1318. my desires

  1319. with good

  1320. things and

  1321. I will

  1322. trust him

  1323. that's the

  1324. kind of people

  1325. we need to

  1326. be for each

  1327. other

  1328. those who

  1329. fall and

  1330. those who

  1331. tempted

  1332. what about

  1333. for those

  1334. who you

  1335. know you've

  1336. been really

  1337. hurt in

  1338. this area

  1339. I want to

  1340. just appeal

  1341. to you

  1342. don't walk

  1343. alone

  1344. I've said

  1345. it before

  1346. but I want

  1347. to say it

  1348. again

  1349. don't walk

  1350. alone in

  1351. this

  1352. you see

  1353. what shame

  1354. does

  1355. shame

  1356. wants you

  1357. to stay

  1358. silent

  1359. or to live

  1360. with the

  1361. what ifs

  1362. bitterness

  1363. wants to

  1364. wants to

  1365. harden

  1366. or numb

  1367. or make

  1368. cynical

  1369. your heart

  1370. pain

  1371. wants you

  1372. just to

  1373. escape

  1374. through

  1375. busyness

  1376. or all

  1377. kinds of

  1378. other

  1379. relationships

  1380. but Jesus

  1381. comes to

  1382. you

  1383. and he

  1384. weeps

  1385. with you

  1386. Jesus

  1387. suffers

  1388. with you

  1389. and he

  1390. says this

  1391. to you

  1392. I know

  1393. what betrayal

  1394. is like

  1395. it cost

  1396. me my

  1397. life

  1398. it cost

  1399. me my

  1400. life

  1401. I understand

  1402. and so

  1403. he says

  1404. I will

  1405. never

  1406. forsake

  1407. you

  1408. because

  1409. I died

  1410. to save

  1411. you

  1412. to heal

  1413. you

  1414. to the

  1415. uttermost

  1416. Ephesians

  1417. 5

  1418. says this

  1419. and I'm

  1420. going to

  1421. close

  1422. with this

  1423. husbands

  1424. love your

  1425. wives as

  1426. Christ

  1427. loved the

  1428. church

  1429. and gave

  1430. himself up

  1431. for her

  1432. that he

  1433. might present

  1434. the church

  1435. to himself

  1436. in splendor

  1437. without spot

  1438. or wrinkle

  1439. that she

  1440. might be

  1441. holy

  1442. and without

  1443. blemish

  1444. that's the

  1445. kind of

  1446. people

  1447. Jesus

  1448. died

  1449. to make

  1450. us

  1451. let's run

  1452. to him

  1453. let's be

  1454. honest with

  1455. him

  1456. let's come

  1457. out into

  1458. the light

  1459. and let him

  1460. just work

  1461. in our

  1462. hearts

  1463. today

  1464. I want

  1465. to just

  1466. take a

  1467. minute

  1468. to

  1469. pray

  1470. I'm

  1471. going to

  1472. ask the

  1473. band

  1474. to come

  1475. up

  1476. but you

  1477. know where

  1478. you are

  1479. right now

  1480. I'm going

  1481. to ask

  1482. some of

  1483. us

  1484. afterwards

  1485. to actually

  1486. come up

  1487. for prayer

  1488. that's a

  1489. big move

  1490. because you

  1491. may feel

  1492. the sense

  1493. of oh

  1494. what other

  1495. people think

  1496. listen we

  1497. are all

  1498. sexual sinners

  1499. in this

  1500. room

  1501. Jesus

  1502. wants to

  1503. bring us

  1504. out into

  1505. the light

  1506. and to

  1507. bring healing

  1508. so I

  1509. want you

  1510. just to

  1511. do business

  1512. with God

  1513. maybe you

  1514. need to

  1515. repent

  1516. of where

  1517. you've

  1518. actually

  1519. just been

  1520. minimizing

  1521. areas of

  1522. your life

  1523. maybe you

  1524. need to

  1525. just open

  1526. your heart

  1527. up to

  1528. get healing

  1529. for him

  1530. to speak

  1531. into your

  1532. heart

  1533. just take

  1534. a minute

  1535. now to

  1536. allow him

  1537. to just

  1538. minister

  1539. to you

  1540. be real

  1541. with him

  1542. father we

  1543. are broken

  1544. people

  1545. we desperately

  1546. need you

  1547. but thank

  1548. you that you

  1549. are the one

  1550. who satisfies

  1551. our desires

  1552. with good

  1553. things

  1554. I pray for

  1555. those who

  1556. right now

  1557. really feel

  1558. this struggle

  1559. and the

  1560. wrestle

  1561. Lord

  1562. I pray

  1563. would you

  1564. come to

  1565. them

  1566. I pray

  1567. that they

  1568. wouldn't leave

  1569. here today

  1570. without talking

  1571. to someone

  1572. about it

  1573. I pray

  1574. Lord

  1575. that we

  1576. would be

  1577. a church

  1578. where it's

  1579. the safest

  1580. place to

  1581. be sinners

  1582. and sufferers

  1583. but Lord

  1584. that in this

  1585. place you

  1586. would just

  1587. bring healing

  1588. and restoration

  1589. to us

  1590. father just work

  1591. in our lives

  1592. show us that

  1593. you are more

  1594. satisfying than

  1595. anything else we

  1596. chase after

  1597. because you're

  1598. a better lover

  1599. in Jesus name

  1600. Amen

  1601. you
