  1. I occasionally get to speak on Parliament Hill and I went to speak on

  2. Parliament Hill on Friday to some of the staff for the MPs, some of the staff are

  3. the senators and some of the permanent employees on Parliament Hill and I was

  4. there on Friday and of course for many of them they were in complete and utter

  5. shock because even those who worked on Parliament Hill were caught completely

  6. and utterly by surprise with what happened on Thursday with Andrew Scheer

  7. resigning as leader of the Conservative Party. You know you can think you know how

  8. things are going to unfold and how what's going to be happening next and when

  9. there'll be reviews and you just think you can know the future but in fact you

  10. really can't. Monday night of the same week I met with the council of the church

  11. and one of the things we did was look at the first draft of our budget for 2020

  12. and at the heart of looking at a budget of course is trying to have a bit of a

  13. sense as to how much money you're going to receive in the coming year. If you

  14. don't have any idea about the money that's going to come in it's sort of hard to

  15. hard to make some type of a budget. This church doesn't make any money from

  16. rentals or sales or anything like that. We're completely not really dependent upon

  17. the support of people who who make this their church home and of course you don't

  18. really know. It's a very human problem on one hand or very human part of the human

  19. condition to want to know the future. It's part of the human condition to sort

  20. of think you do know the future in some way but the fact of the matter is is that

  21. we don't know the future and every single one of us when we have coffee after the

  22. service we can probably tell often in tragic terms how you think something's

  23. going to happen or something's going to unfold only to be completely and utterly

  24. blindsided by something that you had not anticipated had never dreamed would

  25. happen and completely and utterly changes how your afternoon your day your

  26. week that next month is going to be. It's a very very human aspect that we both want

  27. to control think we can control but reality keeps showing us we can't control

  28. the future and we don't know the future. The text that we're going to look at in a

  29. moment is actually a text that in an odd way speaks into this human condition in a

  30. very very powerful way. I'm beginning a new sermon series if you go and listen to

  31. the whole of Handel's Messiah there's four different passages from the book of

  32. Isaiah that talk about Jesus in the book of Isaiah and I'm going to look at one

  33. each week. In this particular week I'm going to look at a prophecy made some

  34. somewhere between 735 or 734 BC about the birth of Jesus. 735 years, 735

  35. before Jesus was born a man by the name of Isaiah living in Jerusalem made a

  36. prophecy about his birth. We're going to look at that this morning. For Christians

  37. it's a very very well-known verse. So if you have your Bibles, those of you don't

  38. have your Bibles I'll put it up on the screen and here's how Isaiah chapter 7

    Isaiah 7:1

  39. verses 1, how this sort of how it gets into this particular type of prophecy.

  40. And just before we start to read it, just a couple of things. Some of you are maybe

  41. aware of the fact that there's a couple of huge controversies around this. One of the

  42. controversies is whether or not Matthew, when he quotes and talks about Matthew, I'm

  43. sorry, when Matthew talks, when the early Christians talk about Jesus and the virgin

  44. birth, whether they get it right. Whether in fact Isaiah did talk about a virgin birth.

  45. There's a big controversy about that. There's whole books written on it. I'm not going to

  46. talk about it other than to say that I'm aware of it. I've studied it. I think at the end of

  47. the day, those who hold to the traditional interpretation of it meaning virgin, I think

  48. they won the exegetical argument. I think they won the argument in terms of the ancient

  49. documents and the meaning of the ancient words, but I'm not going to get into it. There's also

  50. a big controversy as to whether Isaiah would have written this in 735 or 734 BC. There's a whole

  51. pile of people who think that it wasn't written until the 400 BCs, but I'm not going to address

  52. that either other than to say that if in fact, on one level for our topic, if in 430 BC they

  53. predicted a virgin birth, that's still a pretty big prophecy 430 years in advance. So I'm not

  54. going to get into those dating issues. I'm just going to take it as it's been traditionally

  55. understood. If you went to a traditional Jewish family, they would understand that this text was

  56. written in 734 or 735 BC, and we're just going to look at it. And here's how the text begins.

  57. It starts like this. I should be better if I actually had it in my Bible. You folks can see it.

  58. Isaiah chapter 7 is where it begins. Isaiah chapter 7. Here's how the text begins.

Isaiah 7 chapter mention Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  59. In the days of Ahaz, the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin, the king of Syria,

  60. and Pekah, the son of Hermaliah, the king of Israel, came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it,

  61. but could not yet mount an attack against it. When the house of David, that's the royal family,

  62. was told, Syria is in league with Ephraim, the heart of Ahaz, that's the king, and the heart of

  63. his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind. And I'm just going to pause there

  64. for a second. You know, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, names, names, names, right? Well,

  65. this is, interestingly enough, this is all historical stuff. These are people who, outside of the words

  66. of the Bible, there's lots of historical records that all of these people existed, and the events which

  67. are being talked about here are events which are talked about in many pagan and other sources.

  68. And what's going on is this. First of all, you have to remember that, I mean, we talk about a two-state

  69. solution nowadays for Israel. Back at this time, there was a two-state solution to a big problem,

  70. but that two-state solution was that there were two Jewish nations. There is a Jewish nation in the

  71. south whose capital was Jerusalem, and Ahaz is the king of that. That's usually referred to as Judah

  72. at this time period. There's another Jewish nation in the north. That's sometimes called Israel.

  73. Sometimes it's called Ephraim. That's what it's called here. And the king of that northern kingdom

  74. in their capital was a city called Samaria. That's mentioned here. He's the son of Hermalia. He's Pekah,

  75. the son of Hermalia. That's that king.

  76. So what's going on is this. Assyria has started to arise with a desire to be an empire,

  77. and they're conquering nations all over the place as their empire expands. And so as the power of

  78. Assyria is rising, the king of Syria and the king of Israel get very worried. And they come and they

  79. want to invade Israel. They want to invade Judah. They want to take over Jerusalem. And the reason is this.

  80. It's a very simple reason. They think that a three-nation alliance might be able to resist

  81. the growing Assyrian power. And Ahaz is terrified of Assyria, and he's also terrified of fighting Assyria

  82. with Israel and Syria. And that's why he's torn. And because the king of Jerusalem doesn't want to join

  83. the alliance, the other two countries, say, listen, all we do, we go, we take Jerusalem, we kill the king,

  84. we put in our puppet, and he's in charge of the armed forces. We have a three-nation alliance. We go and fight

  85. Assyria. And that's what's going on. Ahaz has rejected the offer to join an alliance. He's terrified of being

  86. invaded by the Assyrians and Israel. And he's terrified of the Assyrians. And that's the context. So what happens?

  87. What happens is next in verse 3. Now, one of the things you need to understand is in those days,

  88. Jewish people had prophets. And if you read through all of, for our Jewish friends who might be here

  89. today, it's called, they would refer to it as the Tanakh. And for Christians, we would refer to it as

  90. the Old Testament. And if you read through that, you'll see that there's this phenomenon in Israel

  91. known as prophets. And a way to understand what a prophet is, is a prophet is God's mouth.

  92. That's a simple way to understand what a prophet is. A prophet is God's mouth. God speaks through the prophet,

  93. and he speaks usually in one of two ways. He speaks directly into the situation that the people in front of him

  94. are dealing with. And sometimes he speaks about the future and something which is going to happen down the road.

  95. And in this particular case, Isaiah is a prophet centered in Jerusalem, the southern kingdom.

  96. And here's what happens. And the Lord said to Isaiah, verse 3,

  97. Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shir Jashub, your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool

  98. on the highway to the washer's field. And just sort of pause there for a second.

  99. Isaiah's son is sort of like a walking prophecy. His name, the name means a remnant will return.

  100. And that means it's on one hand, he's a bit of like a warning of God's judgment,

  101. because a remnant happens when everybody gets, almost everybody is destroyed and there's only a remnant left.

  102. But it's also sort of an oracle of hope that the remnant will return to what Jewish people call the promised land.

  103. And so Isaiah's son, he would have introduced him to Ahaz, and Ahaz would have thought,

  104. Oh, that's like a bit of in my face type of way to name your son and to bring him.

  105. And Ahaz is studying the water supply because he's worried about the invasion and he knows there'll be a siege.

  106. And he's studying the water supply and he's worried.

  107. But Isaiah has come because God wants him to say something to the king.

  108. And here's what he says. Verse 4,

  109. God says to Isaiah,

  110. Say to him, that's Ahaz, the king of Jerusalem,

  111. Be careful, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint

  112. because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands

  113. at the fierce anger of Rezan and Syria and the son of Remaliah.

  114. Because Syria with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah has devised evil against you,

  115. saying, let us go up against Judah and terrify it and let us conquer it for ourselves

  116. and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it.

  117. So that's the first part of this message that Isaiah comes to deliver to Ahaz.

  118. And the first part of it isn't so much don't worry.

  119. Those odd little bits about, in the original language,

  120. be careful, be quiet, is really don't do anything.

  121. Like in a sense he's saying to Ahaz,

  122. you can go back in, don't look at the water supply, don't worry about it.

  123. And then he uses a very, God uses a derogatory way

  124. of referring to the northern kingdom, Israel, and to Syria.

  125. He compares them to a force which is spent.

  126. It's as if you had a log and the log burned,

  127. and now everything in the log that is burned has been burned up,

  128. and all you have left is just the remnants.

  129. This has a little bit of a heat left to it.

  130. It's just smoldering, but it's a completely and utterly spent force.

  131. And God says to Ahaz, that's how you have to understand.

  132. Don't do anything.

  133. And Ahaz is probably thinking, well, you know,

  134. this is very easy for you to say just to do nothing,

  135. but Isaiah has a bit of another message for him.

  136. The reason he's to do nothing is seen in verse 7, which is this.

  137. Thus says the Lord God, it shall not stand, it shall not come to pass.

  138. In other words, it's not going to happen.

  139. Now, remember, this is being written in 735 or 734 B.C.,

  140. and Isaiah says, God has said to you that you aren't going to be invaded,

  141. and so all of your preparations are worthless,

  142. and even part of your fear is worthless because they're not going to invade.

  143. Now, he predicts that there'll be no invasion.

  144. He continues on with his prediction in a very, very interesting way in verses 8 and 9.

  145. For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin.

  146. And within 65 years, Ephraim, that's the northern kingdom,

  147. will be shattered from being a people.

  148. And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Hermaliah.

  149. If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all.

  150. Now, in fact, what we know from history is this.

  151. Shortly after this, of 735 or 734 B.C., shortly after this, Assyria invades Syria.

  152. And because Assyria invades Syria,

  153. the alliance between Syria and Israel breaks,

  154. and they don't, in fact, invade the southern kingdom.

  155. And, in fact, we know from history that in 732 B.C.,

  156. the Syrian nation falls to the Assyrian Empire

  157. and is completely and utterly gobbled up.

  158. And in that same move of gobbling up Syria,

  159. they gobble up the northern part of,

  160. large parts of the northern part of Israel.

  161. But northern Israel was able to keep fighting for a little bit of a longer time,

  162. even though they were constantly harassed with battles by Assyria.

  163. And in 722 B.C., the capital of Israel falls.

  164. And the nation of Israel falls to Assyria.

  165. And Assyria was a very, very, very, very brutal empire.

  166. And one of the things that the Assyrians did to trouble some nations

  167. is that they would start to have these forced marches

  168. to force the people to migrate to different parts of the world

  169. where they weren't native.

  170. And they would also take another area,

  171. and they would take some of the people from that,

  172. and they'd have a forced migration, a forced march.

  173. And, of course, the Assyrians wouldn't care

  174. if many, many people died in the way.

  175. And they'd force them to relocate in another land.

  176. And shortly after Assyria took over the northern kingdom,

  177. they began these forced migrations of the Jewish people

  178. living in what we now know of as northern Israel.

  179. And, in fact, these were to go on in waves of forced migrations

  180. and waves and waves and waves.

  181. And by the year 670 B.C.,

  182. all the Jewish people in northern Israel were gone.

  183. And, in fact, not only were they gone,

  184. they completely vanished from history.

  185. If you have a Jewish friend,

  186. not a single one of your Jewish friends

  187. is descended from the northern kingdom of Israel.

  188. Not one.

  189. Every one of those Jewish people completely vanished from history.

  190. And every Jewish person that you know

  191. is descended from the southern kingdom of Judah,

  192. whose capital was Jerusalem.

  193. In fact, if you know a little bit about Mormons,

  194. one of the Mormon beliefs is that all those lost,

  195. what they're sometimes called as the lost tribes of Israel,

  196. ten and a half tribes,

  197. they somehow got to North America,

  198. became what we now know of as First Nations people.

  199. And there's a whole pile of Mormon mythology around that.

  200. And those of us who are older might remember

  201. there used to be a weird religion in England

  202. called British Israelism.

  203. And they believed that all of those northern tribes

  204. ended up in the British Isles.

  205. And so those of us who are English and Scottish and Irish and Welch

  206. are really Jewish.

  207. And that's an old, weird thing that died years and years ago

  208. but was held for quite a while.

  209. But the northern kingdom completely vanishes.

  210. In other words, this prophecy ends up happening.

  211. Assyria doesn't invade.

  212. Assyria no longer becomes a threat.

  213. And within 65 years of this prophecy,

  214. the northern kingdom doesn't exist at all.

  215. It's quite a remarkable prophecy.

  216. So, how does Ahaz react to this?

  217. I mean, one of the things which is very surprising to people

  218. when they start reading the Bible for the first time

  219. is you expect that the Bible is going to be talking regularly about faith.

  220. It's going to be talking about people following God.

  221. It's going to talk about people following the Lord

  222. and paying attention to his word and obeying it.

  223. And that's sort of what we think is going to happen.

  224. But actually what happens regularly when you read the Bible

  225. is that that's not what happens at all.

  226. People do the opposite.

  227. So, what happens is if you look at the next few verses,

  228. if you start reading again at verse 9,

  229. at verse 10,

  230. there's a period of time which passes

  231. and God says to Isaiah,

  232. you've got to go speak Dehaz again.

  233. There's been a period of time that's taken place.

  234. The siege of Jerusalem never happened.

  235. The invasion doesn't happen.

  236. But what did Ahaz do when God spoke,

  237. even as he sees these prophecies being fulfilled?

  238. We'll look at verse 10.

  239. Again, that's later on.

  240. Some of your translations might say later.

  241. The Lord spoke to Ahaz.

  242. And this is what he says.

  243. Do I have the right text up here?

  244. Yeah, again, the Lord spoke to Ahaz.

  245. Ask a sign of the Lord your God.

  246. Let it be as deep as Sheol or high as heaven.

  247. But Ahaz said,

  248. I will not ask.

  249. I will not put the Lord to the test.

  250. And then the Lord says through Isaiah to the king,

  251. here then, O house of David,

  252. is it too little for you to weary men and women

  253. that you weary my God also?

  254. Now, there's lots of things

  255. which are very, very curious,

  256. you know, about this text.

  257. Some of you, your ears might have pricked up.

  258. Or if you look up there again,

  259. look at verse 11 again.

  260. It says,

  261. Ask a sign of the Lord your God.

  262. Let it be as deep as Sheol or as high as heaven.

  263. I've had many, many, many, many, many people

  264. over the years tell me

  265. they're not a Christian

  266. and at a very, very low time in their life

  267. they ask God to give them a sign.

  268. And they've said that if you just give me a sign

  269. and I know you exist,

  270. then I'll believe in you.

  271. And they'll tell me,

  272. and I asked for that

  273. and I asked very, very sincerely

  274. and nothing happened.

  275. Like, if God wants me to be a Christian,

  276. why didn't he give me a sign?

  277. Like, I've had many, many, many people tell me that.

  278. And many Christians as well

  279. have asked over the years

  280. for some type of a sign from God

  281. and often nothing happens

  282. when they ask for a sign for God.

  283. And so there's a very, very curious thing here,

  284. isn't it?

  285. That here God actually says to the king,

  286. I'm going to give this,

  287. I'm going to give you an opportunity.

  288. Ask me a sign

  289. and I'll give you the sign

  290. so that you know that I exist.

  291. And then it's really funny

  292. because Ahaz says,

  293. no, no, it sounds very, very pious.

  294. No, no, no, no, no, no.

  295. No, no, no, no, no, no.

  296. I'm not going to ask you

  297. of a sign of you, Lord.

  298. And it sounds very pious.

  299. But then there's this surprising response

  300. where the Lord, through Isaiah, says,

  301. why are you wearying me

  302. and wearying men?

  303. Like, why is it

  304. that Ahaz's pious response

  305. makes the Lord angry?

  306. And that's because

  307. there's something significant.

  308. And if you read

  309. the other different historical accounts,

  310. you know what it was

  311. as to why it is

  312. that he didn't want to give,

  313. ask the Lord for a sign.

  314. It's because

  315. the king of,

  316. the king, Ahaz,

  317. has already made a deal

  318. with Assyria.

  319. In other words,

  320. even though the Lord said,

  321. you don't have to worry,

  322. the invasion is going to happen,

  323. and even though

  324. Ahaz could see

  325. that the invasion didn't happen,

  326. and even though

  327. he starts to have

  328. a bit of a sense

  329. of Assyria attacking Syria

  330. because he would have had

  331. spies and messengers,

  332. even at all of those times,

  333. he doesn't believe the Lord,

  334. even though he's Jewish.

  335. He doesn't trust his word.

  336. He doesn't believe his prophet.

  337. He says,

  338. I'm going to solve

  339. this problem myself.

  340. And what I'm going to do

  341. is I'm going to take

  342. a whole pile of money

  343. and I'm going to go to Assyria

  344. and I'm going to offer

  345. to be their vassal

  346. so they don't invade me.

  347. And so Ahaz

  348. has put his faith

  349. and trust

  350. in power politics.

  351. He's put his faith

  352. and trust

  353. in his ability

  354. to manipulate events.

  355. He's put his faith

  356. and trust

  357. in having Assyria

  358. as his Lord.

  359. And now,

  360. Isaiah goes ahead

  361. and asks Ahaz

  362. a very, very, very,

  363. very uncomfortable question.

  364. You see,

  365. what happens

  366. if Ahaz

  367. asks for a sign

  368. and the Lord

  369. keeps his word

  370. just like he kept

  371. his other word

  372. and actually gives the sign?

  373. And then the fact

  374. of the matter is

  375. that he has not

  376. trusted the Lord before,

  377. that he's given

  378. a whole pile of money

  379. to Assyria,

  380. that he's put his faith

  381. and trust

  382. and hope

  383. in Assyria,

  384. that will come out.

  385. And it will come out

  386. in a very awkward way.

  387. Like, you see,

  388. what would actually happen

  389. if Ahaz had asked

  390. for a sign

  391. and had come?

  392. Does that mean

  393. he's going to go back

  394. to Assyria

  395. and ask for the money back?

  396. Is he going to have

  397. to reveal

  398. to everybody

  399. that he's made

  400. Israel,

  401. Judah,

  402. a vassal state

  403. of Assyria?

  404. He doesn't want

  405. a sign to be true.

  406. Because a sign

  407. to be true

  408. would actually

  409. screw up his life.

  410. Now, I can't speak

  411. for all of you

  412. who are here

  413. and there might be

  414. very many of you

  415. who are here

  416. who have asked

  417. the Lord for a sign

  418. and the sign

  419. didn't come.

  420. But I want to just say

  421. a couple of things

  422. about it

  423. if we just want

  424. to be really honest

  425. about it for a second.

  426. Like, first of all,

  427. there's a very,

  428. very general problem.

  429. Let's say

  430. that you were

  431. in a plane

  432. going up north

  433. and a storm comes

  434. and the first blast

  435. of the storm

  436. knocks out your radio

  437. and it drives you

  438. way, way, way

  439. and you know

  440. that you're

  441. with the pilot.

  442. He lets you know

  443. you're being driven

  444. way, way, way,

  445. way off course

  446. and then finally

  447. the plane succumbs

  448. to the storm

  449. and there's a forced

  450. landing in the water

  451. and in the process

  452. of the forced landing

  453. in the water

  454. the plane is destroyed.

  455. You're battered

  456. and bruised

  457. but you survived

  458. the plane crash

  459. and you're able

  460. to swim

  461. even though it's in

  462. you know

  463. the late spring

  464. or something like that

  465. and the water is cold

  466. you're able to swim

  467. to shore

  468. and you huddle

  469. on the side

  470. you had some

  471. waterproof matches

  472. you make a fire

  473. and you just worry

  474. about how long

  475. you'll have to

  476. be there on this

  477. piece of land

  478. before some help

  479. will come

  480. and you're there

  481. for 24 hours

  482. you're there

  483. for 36 hours

  484. you don't want to leave

  485. and nothing's happening

  486. and so you make

  487. some type of a sign

  488. you think to yourself

  489. well you know

  490. who knows

  491. we could be stuck

  492. here on this beach

  493. and if we maybe

  494. just walked a couple

  495. of miles

  496. like maybe somebody

  497. even lives

  498. a couple of miles away

  499. and it would be so dumb

  500. just to be here

  501. on the beach

  502. when there's help

  503. just a little while away

  504. and so you make

  505. some type of a note

  506. on the side

  507. so that if rescuers

  508. do come

  509. they could see

  510. that you'd been there

  511. and you start going along

  512. and everything you see

  513. just lets you know

  514. that the island

  515. is completely

  516. and utterly uninhabited

  517. but all of a sudden

  518. you come to a spot

  519. right by the water

  520. and you see

  521. two stones

  522. on end

  523. and on top of it

  524. you see a stone

  525. and on top of that

  526. you see

  527. another stone balanced

  528. and on top of that stone

  529. you see another stone balanced

  530. five stones balanced

  531. now what every single

  532. one of us would know

  533. is this

  534. human beings

  535. have been here

  536. human beings

  537. have been here

  538. because who other

  539. than a human being

  540. could have five stones

  541. so clearly set

  542. and balanced

  543. on top of each other

  544. and designed

  545. we would all know

  546. that that was created

  547. by human beings

  548. that human beings

  549. have been here

  550. and instantly

  551. your hopes

  552. would be lifted

  553. that this isn't

  554. maybe a completely

  555. and utterly

  556. unvisited island

  557. up in the north

  558. or a piece of land

  559. that maybe if I keep

  560. walking along the beach

  561. I'll find the kids

  562. who did it

  563. or the teenagers

  564. or the adults

  565. who did it

  566. or maybe I can just

  567. trust that fairly soon

  568. there'll be some hunters

  569. or some fishermen

  570. or something like that

  571. who are going to come here

  572. but a second you see

  573. five stones

  574. just five simple stones

  575. by the water

  576. you instantly know

  577. that human beings

  578. are here

  579. you instantly know

  580. that every one of us

  581. would know that

  582. well how can

  583. how

  584. how is it

  585. that we look

  586. at the universe

  587. how is it

  588. that you look

  589. at a cell

  590. which is vastly

  591. more complicated

  592. than five stones

  593. balanced

  594. how is it

  595. you look at

  596. DNA

  597. which is vastly

  598. more complicated

  599. than five stones

  600. balanced

  601. and don't see design

  602. how can that be

  603. and if you

  604. as a human being

  605. can look at the

  606. all of the miraculous

  607. things in nature

  608. and how it's so

  609. unbelievably

  610. interconnected

  611. in ways

  612. that the adaptation

  613. of genetic changes

  614. can't account

  615. just everything

  616. from the gravity

  617. the atmosphere

  618. everything about

  619. human life

  620. on this planet

  621. just screams

  622. design

  623. and how could

  624. God give you

  625. a sign

  626. if you can't

  627. see design

  628. like how would

  629. that work

  630. and that

  631. that fits in

  632. with an even

  633. deeper problem

  634. how in many ways

  635. even though

  636. we're

  637. 2800 years

  638. 2900 years

  639. after Ahaz

  640. there's still

  641. something

  642. very very

  643. very serious

  644. in our lives

  645. you see

  646. the fact

  647. the matter

  648. is

  649. is that

  650. if Ahaz

  651. had asked

  652. for a sign

  653. and God

  654. had given

  655. them the sign

  656. then that

  657. would just

  658. mess up

  659. his life

  660. because the

  661. last thing

  662. you want

  663. is an

  664. untamed

  665. God

  666. messing around

  667. in your

  668. affairs

  669. you see

  670. the fact

  671. the matter

  672. is

  673. is that

  674. when a

  675. person

  676. asks that

  677. God

  678. would give

  679. them a sign

  680. so they

  681. would

  682. believe

  683. and I'm

  684. not

  685. maybe

  686. you're

  687. all

  688. different

  689. for those

  690. of you

  691. who've

  692. gone

  693. through

  694. that

  695. but I

  696. think

  697. for many

  698. many

  699. many

  700. people

  701. they do

  702. it

  703. knowing

  704. that it

  705. will

  706. fail

  707. so they

  708. can say

  709. people like

  710. me

  711. to people

  712. like me

  713. why doesn't

  714. God give

  715. me a sign

  716. that I

  717. will

  718. believe

  719. and I

  720. think

  721. that often

  722. many other

  723. people

  724. even though

  725. they might

  726. on one

  727. level

  728. be emotionally

  729. very very

  730. distraught

  731. and they

  732. might on

  733. one level

  734. really think

  735. they want

  736. a sign

  737. from God

  738. that will

  739. help them

  740. to know

  741. that he's

  742. real

  743. and exist

  744. and you

  745. have to ask

  746. yourself

  747. is that what

  748. you really

  749. want

  750. like if that

  751. happened

  752. does that mean

  753. you're going to

  754. tell all of your

  755. friends that you've

  756. become a Christian

  757. does that mean

  758. you're going to

  759. tell your

  760. family that you've

  761. become a Christian

  762. does that mean

  763. you're going to

  764. change your life

  765. as if the

  766. Christian faith

  767. is true

  768. like do you

  769. really think

  770. you would do

  771. all of that

  772. stuff if the

  773. sign was

  774. answered

  775. and I

  776. think many

  777. times

  778. we don't

  779. actually want

  780. to have

  781. anything like

  782. that happen

  783. we're actually

  784. sort of almost

  785. relieved that

  786. God doesn't

  787. give us a sign

  788. and then we

  789. have a reason

  790. for unbelief

  791. and for many

  792. of us if we

  793. even had the

  794. sign it would

  795. just be one of

  796. those curious

  797. things that we

  798. would talk

  799. about over beer

  800. with our

  801. buddies

  802. but that there's

  803. in fact a deep

  804. part of a

  805. human being

  806. that doesn't

  807. want God to

  808. give them a

  809. sign

  810. and is quite

  811. happy with

  812. having eyes

  813. closed to

  814. design in

  815. the world

  816. so God

  817. goes ahead and

  818. does something

  819. which is very

  820. surprising he

  821. says well I'm

  822. not going to

  823. you didn't want

  824. to choose a

  825. sign I'm going

  826. to give you a

  827. sign and

  828. here's where

  829. we're going

  830. to wrap

  831. up with

  832. this very

  833. just brief

  834. examination

  835. of what the

  836. sign actually

  837. is look

  838. at verse 14

  839. therefore the

  840. Lord himself

  841. will give you

  842. a sign behold

  843. the virgin

  844. shall conceive

  845. a bearish

  846. son and

  847. you shall

  848. call his

  849. name

  850. Emmanuel

  851. and you

  852. shall call

  853. his name

  854. Emmanuel

  855. now the

  856. word for

  857. virgin

  858. usually means

  859. virgin but

  860. it can

  861. also mean

  862. young

  863. maiden

  864. and I'm

  865. not going

  866. to read the

  867. rest of the

  868. stuff that

  869. goes on with

  870. the rest of

  871. the context

  872. of it because

  873. we just need

  874. to sort of

  875. focus in on

  876. this it's very

  877. interesting that

  878. the rest of the

  879. prophecy and

  880. most of the

  881. other prophecies

  882. in the book of

  883. Isaiah it's very

  884. clear how they

  885. were fulfilled in

  886. this time this

  887. would be one of

  888. those things that's

  889. even said in a

  890. very very odd

  891. way it said in

  892. Hebrew you're not

  893. sure whether in

  894. Hebrew it should be

  895. translated in the

  896. present tense or the

  897. future tense but

  898. it's very very

  899. telling that about

  900. 250 years after

  901. this Jewish

  902. scholars were

  903. translating the

  904. Hebrew Old

  905. Testament into

  906. Greek and the

  907. Jewish scholars

  908. would have looked

  909. and seen all of

  910. the different ways

  911. that the book of

  912. Isaiah had been

  913. the prophecies had

  914. been fulfilled and

  915. fulfilled and

  916. fulfilled and

  917. fulfilled and

  918. fulfilled but when

  919. they came to this

  920. particular one they

  921. would have said to

  922. themselves that

  923. we've never

  924. particularly seen

  925. how that particular

  926. prophecy was

  927. fulfilled and

  928. therefore it's

  929. something that

  930. still has to be

  931. fulfilled in the

  932. future and they

  933. understood that it

  934. was referring to a

  935. virgin which is how

  936. it's translated into

  937. Greek which is how

  938. it makes it into our

  939. New Testament but

  940. it's a very very

  941. very very interesting

  942. prophecy that a day

  943. will come when a

  944. virgin while remaining

  945. a virgin will give

  946. birth to a baby boy

  947. and he will be

  948. known as Emmanuel

  949. which means God

  950. with us

  951. God with us

  952. and Christians

  953. believe that an

  954. angel came to

  955. Mary and asked

  956. Mary on God's

  957. behalf whether she

  958. would be willing to

  959. be that virgin

  960. whether she

  961. remaining a virgin

  962. would be willing to

  963. let God do a miracle

  964. within her womb so

  965. that a baby would be

  966. born and Christians

  967. believe that Mary

  968. said yes to that

  969. and then because

  970. Joseph understood how

  971. babies are made

  972. was going to divorce

  973. his fiancee

  974. and so an angel came

  975. and spoke on God's

  976. behalf and spoke to

  977. Joseph and made

  978. clear that in fact

  979. God had done a

  980. miracle within the

  981. womb of Mary

  982. and that that

  983. which was in the

  984. womb of Mary

  985. that little

  986. zygote

  987. was actually God

  988. himself coming to

  989. live within

  990. among us

  991. and the reason that

  992. Christians believe

  993. that anything like

  994. this is true

  995. is all because

  996. Jesus changes

  997. everything

  998. I mean those are

  999. just weird stories

  1000. and most of us

  1001. would just discount

  1002. them

  1003. but the thing

  1004. which is so

  1005. unique and

  1006. powerful about

  1007. Jesus

  1008. I talk about a

  1009. little bit in the

  1010. blog which is in

  1011. your bulletins

  1012. today

  1013. is that Jesus

  1014. lived a very very

  1015. particular type of

  1016. life

  1017. where he did

  1018. undeniable miracles

  1019. even as enemies

  1020. and opponents

  1021. even the pagan

  1022. writers who wrote

  1023. about Jesus

  1024. afterward

  1025. acknowledged that

  1026. Jesus is a man

  1027. who was supposed

  1028. to have performed

  1029. miracles

  1030. and he comes

  1031. and he predicts

  1032. that he's going to

  1033. die a death by

  1034. crucifixion

  1035. he predicts he's

  1036. going to die a

  1037. form of death

  1038. that he can't

  1039. control

  1040. he could have

  1041. said I'm going

  1042. to kill myself

  1043. or I'm going to

  1044. jump off of a

  1045. cliff or something

  1046. like that

  1047. but actually predicting

  1048. that he's going to

1049. die in a way that

  1050. only the Roman

  1051. authorities can kill

1052. him is part of his

  1053. prediction

  1054. and he predicts

  1055. that he's going to

  1056. die by crucifixion

  1057. and he predicts

  1058. that he's going to

  1059. rise from the dead

  1060. and he says that

  1061. my prediction of

  1062. my death by

  1063. crucifixion and

  1064. my true and real

  1065. resurrection will

  1066. vindicate everything

  1067. that I have said

  1068. it'll vindicate who

  1069. I am and what I've

  1070. come to do

  1071. and there is very

  1072. very very very

  1073. very large and

  1074. significant evidence

  1075. in fact if there's

  1076. one thing which

  1077. even the most

  1078. skeptical

  1079. atheist

  1080. scholar accepts

  1081. is that Jesus

  1082. died by crucifixion

  1083. under Rome

  1084. and there's very

  1085. very very strong

  1086. evidence

  1087. that Jesus really

  1088. did rise from the

  1089. dead on the third

  1090. day

  1091. and if a man

  1092. is able to

  1093. predict such a

  1094. thing and in

  1095. fact rise from

  1096. the dead

  1097. surely he's a

  1098. man who's

  1099. completely and

  1100. utterly trustworthy

  1101. to listen to

  1102. and so it is

  1103. completely and

  1104. utterly valid to

  1105. believe that

  1106. Jesus in fact was

  1107. the fulfillment of

  1108. this prophecy made

  1109. 735 years earlier

  1110. that a virgin would

  1111. give birth to a

  1112. son and that he

  1113. would be God with

  1114. us and it's very

  1115. interesting because

  1116. one of the reasons

1117. that we don't want to

1118. have God with us is

  1119. we think that God

  1120. will mess up our

  1121. lives but the way

  1122. that we actually see

  1123. God with us isn't

  1124. the way that we

  1125. fear he would be

  1126. with us he's born

  1127. of lower working

  1128. class parents he

  1129. lives a working

  1130. class life he has

  1131. virtually no

  1132. possessions he lives

  1133. amongst a conquered

  1134. people he has no

  1135. particular academic

  1136. credentials or

  1137. beauty or wisdom

  1138. or power or

  1139. privilege that

  1140. would draw us to

  1141. him all we have

  1142. is the depth of

  1143. his teaching and

  1144. the insight into

  1145. human condition

  1146. all we have is

  1147. his miracles that

  1148. heal people and

  1149. deliver them from

  1150. demons and

  1151. deliver them from

  1152. sickness that give

  1153. people life and

  1154. purpose he comes

  1155. to people and

  1156. comes to us in

  1157. the midst of all

1158. of the mess of our

  1159. lives and he is

  1160. with us in the

  1161. midst of normal

  1162. human life and

  1163. he's even with us

  1164. to the point that

  1165. we he himself said

  1166. that he would be

  1167. with us so closely

  1168. and so intensely

  1169. that the death he

  1170. dies would be the

  1171. death that we

  1172. deserve and

  1173. and that in his

  1174. dying the death

  1175. that we deserve

  1176. in a sense taking

  1177. upon himself the

  1178. doom that we

  1179. deserve he would

  1180. offer us the

  1181. destiny that he

  1182. deserves that he's

1183. with us even to the

1184. point of the evil in

  1185. our lives and the

  1186. failure of our lives

  1187. and he's with us

  1188. even to our death

  1189. and he's with us

  1190. he's with us

  1191. he's with us

1192. and he dies with us

1193. that we might be his

  1194. children that he

  1195. might live with us

1196. and this is how an

  1197. ending I'll circle

  1198. around to the

  1199. beginning of the

  1200. story

  1201. the fact the matter

1202. is is we as a

  1203. church when we make

  1204. a budget I try to

  1205. remember it remind

  1206. the council this we

  1207. have the vaguest

  1208. idea in the world

  1209. how much money will

  1210. come in in this

  1211. coming year not the

  1212. vaguest I mean we

  1213. have some ideas about

  1214. trends and all that

  1215. but we don't know

  1216. we don't know

  1217. we can pray and

  1218. make the best

  1219. attempt that we

  1220. really can but you

  1221. see here's the thing

  1222. which is really the

  1223. most significant thing

  1224. about every single

1225. one of us who wants

  1226. to know the future

  1227. who wishes that we

  1228. could know the future

  1229. who are the fact

  1230. have lots of

  1231. experience why about

  1232. things that will come

  1233. completely not really

1234. out of the blue is

1235. that for us as a

  1236. church what matters

1237. is is that Jesus is

  1238. with us that every

  1239. single day that comes

1240. before me is not a

1241. day that I have to

1242. live and try to deal

1243. with all on my own

1244. and that he knows the

  1245. future and that whether

  1246. there will be things

  1247. that come next week

  1248. next month next year

1249. which are a very very

  1250. severe blow because

  1251. Jesus is with me

  1252. through faith I don't

  1253. face it alone

  1254. and the language of

1255. God being with us is

1256. not just a language of

1257. him being with us just

1258. to be with us but it's

  1259. also part of the

  1260. language of God having

  1261. a call for us

1262. that God has a purpose

1263. or a plan for us

1264. and God is with us

1265. Jesus is with us to

  1266. fulfill that purpose or

  1267. that plan and the

  1268. wonderful wonderful

  1269. wonderful wonderful

  1270. wonderful wonderful

1271. thing about us is that

  1272. Jesus came and lived

1273. amongst us to die for

1274. us in such a way that

1275. when we put our faith

1276. and trust in him he

1277. comes to live with us

  1278. again even in the

  1279. midst of whatever pain

1280. we might have to face

  1281. whatever disappointment

1282. we might have to face

  1283. whatever setbacks we

  1284. might have to face

  1285. whatever triumphs and

1286. good things we might have

1287. to face that he is he is

1288. with us is he is with

1289. us as part of us

  1290. entering into the fact

1291. that God has called us

1292. to be his children and

1293. that when Jesus is with

1294. us and we are with him

1295. the final word about any

1296. human being who is with

1297. him is never failure it's

  1298. never disappointment it's

  1299. it's never loser it's

  1300. never hopeless it's

1301. never any foul word that

1302. when we are with Jesus and

1303. he is with us we are with

1304. him because God's call is

1305. being made real in our

1306. lives and in him the final

1307. word about any human being

1308. is welcome home child my

1309. beloved child whom I love for

1310. any person in Jesus that is

1311. the final determinate word about

1312. you and with Jesus we can live

1313. and face the things that come

1314. our way day by day knowing that

1315. he will never abandon us and

1316. that he is with us so that

1317. that call that final word about

1318. us can become more and more

1319. real in our lives as we are

1320. gripped by the wonder that Jesus

1321. is with us as Savior and Lord and

1322. friend I invite you to stand

1323. for any single one of us for those of

1324. us who are in Christ it's a very

1325. very appropriate Sunday morning to

1326. say Jesus help me to know that you

1327. are always with me make the gospel

1328. more and more and more real to me

1329. make those final words that God will

1330. speak over me more and more and

1331. more real to me so that I am able to

1332. face the things which I need to face

1333. today and tomorrow and the day after

1334. that and the day after that make who

1335. Jesus is so real to me and what he did

1336. for me so real to me and those final

1337. words so real to me and his presence

1338. more and more real to me that I

1339. might live each day well in light of

1340. that and if you were here and you've

1341. never asked Christ into your life

1342. there's no better time now than just

1343. in your own words to say Jesus I want

1344. you to be with me I want you to be

1345. with me as my Savior I want you to be

1346. with me as my Lord I want you to be

1347. with me in my plans I want you to be

1348. with me in all my undertakings and not

1349. just be with me as a pet or an

1350. adornment but to be with me as my

1351. Savior and my Lord there's no better

1352. time than today to just say that to

1353. Jesus in your own words Jesus be with

1354. me as Savior and Lord and because of

1355. this prophecy 735 years before the

1356. birth of Jesus that a virgin will be

1357. give birth to a son and his name will

1358. be Emmanuel which means God with us it

1359. means that God gave a sign that he

1360. wants to be with you and if you say to

1361. Jesus be with me he will never say no and

1362. if you think does he know what I'm like

  1363. the answer is yes

1364. if you say how on earth could he want to

1365. be with me if he really knew what I was

1366. like then all I can say is he made that

1367. prophecy 735 years into the future he

1368. knows perfectly all about you and he

1369. God would not make any promise like that

1370. if he did not want to keep it he kept

1371. that promise and he will keep the promise

1372. to enter into you and to be with you he

1373. will keep that promise he will never say

1374. no he will be your Savior and your Lord

1375. let's bow our heads in prayer

1376. father we've seen the glory of the dance

1377. we've heard the glory of the music we've

1378. heard Andrew Peterson saying that Jesus

1379. is worthy we've heard of your scripture

1380. we've heard of your promise we've heard

1381. of this spectacular prophecy that you

1382. would cause a miracle within the womb of

1383. a virgin so that a boy would be born and

1384. that he would be known as God with us and

1385. we have been told how he comes to be with

1386. us not to punish us not to destroy us not

1387. to unmake us but to actually die our death

1388. for us that he is with us even to the

1389. point of the evil in our lives and the

1390. death in our lives to make us your child

1391. by adoption and grace father we have been

1392. told those things and we ask that the

1393. Holy Spirit would move with might and

1394. power and deep conviction within us that

1395. we might be gripped more and more by the

1396. truth of the gospel that every day we

1397. will remember what your final word will

1398. be over us when our days are over not

1399. because of anything brilliant or wonderful

1400. or powerful about us but because of

1401. Jesus and that he is with us and he will

1402. help us and guarantee that that call that

1403. you have to come home and be with you and

1404. know that we are your beloved child by

1405. faith and adoption that that will be the

1406. final word spoken over us father grip us

1407. with the gospel that we might be gripped

1408. with your final words about us when we put

1409. our faith and trust in Jesus that we might

1410. live every day and face every problem and

1411. every opportunity in light of that profound

1412. truth and all God's people said amen

  1413. you
