  1. Heavenly Father, I thank you that we're able to come into a building and to worship you,

  2. that we're able to pray to you, we're able to study your word,

  3. we're able to have fellowship and meet with each other.

  4. I just thank you for that, Lord.

  5. There might be some of us here who have had a hard year,

  6. and there might be also people here who have had a good year.

  7. But I ask all those distractions would just fall away,

  8. and we would just be focused on what you want to say to us and on your glory and on nothing else.

  9. In Jesus' name, amen.

  10. So we're in that time of year now where Christmas has happened.

  11. We've done all the spending.

  12. We've done all the family stuff.

  13. And we're kind of in that limbo right now between Christmas Day and New Year's

  14. where we don't know when the stores are open or what to do.

  15. And if you're anything like me, during this time over the past couple of years,

  16. I've tried to use this time to reflect on the past year or things from my past.

  17. I haven't been able to do that this year because my brother-in-law is getting married tomorrow,

  18. so it's been very chaotic.

  19. But normally I would be reflecting about certain things that I've set,

  20. like goals I've set over the past couple of years.

  21. And the funny thing is, our culture loves to set goals.

  22. You see it all in books everywhere, all in bookstores.

  23. You see it in magazines.

  24. You see it online in podcasts.

  25. All over the place.

  26. And if you're anything like me, I personally set goals for a lot of things,

  27. for my fitness, for my spending habits, even for my marriage, my friendships,

  28. and for travel plans, for my dreams that I have to travel.

  29. And maybe you're also like me, and maybe you failed at some of these goals.

  30. Or maybe you also succeeded in some of these goals.

  31. And it's interesting because Paul, in this text that we're about to look at,

  32. talks about a goal.

  33. He talks about straining towards a goal.

  34. He talks about this ultimate goal.

  35. This goal that is so great that he gave his life for this goal.

  36. So if you could turn with me to Philippians chapter 3, verses 12 to 21,

    Philippians 3:12–21

  37. I would like to take a closer look at this.

  38. So again, it's Philippians chapter 3, verses 12 to 21.

    Philippians 3:12–21

  39. And if you don't have a Bible, there's some up here.

  40. Feel free to come up and grab one wherever you want.

  41. If you don't have one, you can take it, bring it home, it's yours.

  42. Or you can just read from the screen up there.

  43. So as you're turning there, I will talk a bit about the context.

  44. So this is a letter to a church in Philippi by the Apostle Paul.

  45. Paul was writing this letter from a jail in Rome.

  46. So this is one of his famous jail epistles.

  47. And Philippi, this city, was a city refounded by the Roman emperor Augustus.

  48. And because of that, it had special status.

  49. It had status because it was the Augustian colony, which let it be exempted from certain taxes.

  50. This town was found in eastern Macedonia.

  51. It was found along an important Roman commercial road called the Ignatian Way.

  52. This church would have been mainly Gentiles.

  53. And these people in this church were friends of Paul.

  54. You can see that in his writings when he writes this letter to the Philippian church

  55. that he has this kind of friendly tone to them.

  56. And he says he's visited them a couple times.

  57. So he knows these people.

  58. So let's take a look at this.

  59. So at the beginning in verse 12.

  60. Not that I've already obtained this or am already perfect,

  61. but I press on to make it my own,

  62. because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

  63. So in the previous verses, you have to remember when you read the Bible,

  64. you have to always take everything in the context of the book that's written.

  65. You can't just pick verses out.

  66. So in the previous verses of chapter 3,

  67. Paul has been talking about, he talked about his past.

  68. He talked about how he was a Hebrew of Hebrews.

  69. He was a Pharisee.

  70. He used to persecute the church.

  71. And so he would have had this status

  72. where he would have been considered very high,

  73. almost above other people.

  74. And then he threw it all away.

  75. Why did he throw it all away?

  76. But he says that he threw it all away

  77. because everything is rubbish compared to knowing Christ,

  78. compared to knowing Jesus Christ.

  79. Another way to describe his level of how high he would have been in his society

  80. was I'm currently reading Harry Potter.

  81. And in it, there's two different types of wizards.

  82. There's pureblood wizards, and then there's halfblood wizards.

  83. And the way you're a pureblood wizard is if both your parents were wizards,

  84. one's a wizard, one's a witch.

  85. And if you're a halfblood, one is only magical, one is not.

  86. So Paul would have been a pureblood.

  87. He would have almost like a higher status.

  88. People would have came to him for advice and all that.

  89. And then he threw it all away.

  90. He says it.

  91. He got rid of it because he considered it rubbish.

  92. Now what does he mean by obtained when he says,

  93. not that I've already attained this or am already perfect?

  94. Well, if you look at verse 11, he says,

  95. that by any means possible, I may obtain the resurrection from the dead.

  96. Now some of you here might be like, oh, time out.

  97. Matt, you just said resurrection.

  98. Don't you know we live in the 21st century?

  99. These things don't exist.

  100. It's been proven by science.

  101. Well, I believe this because there's hundreds of eyewitness accounts of the resurrection.

  102. They're written down.

  103. It's the same way in the history books that are in our schools or in libraries.

  104. The way they make, they write these history books is from eyewitness accounts of ancient,

  105. like if there's something about the ancient wars, it's all written from eyewitness accounts.

  106. And it's interesting because there's more, there's more written accounts on, for the resurrection

  107. than there is for a lot of the, a lot of the great ancient wars that they're talked about in schools.

  108. And it's interesting also that people are so quick to, to throw away that the resurrection

  109. could actually happen, that this miracle could happen.

  110. But then they're so quick to hold to the theory of evolution, which is also a miracle event.

  111. The evolution theory is how, is how it's claimed that how the world came to be from a big bang.

  112. But that takes also a faith to believe in.

  113. That also takes a faith in a miracle event that happened.

  114. But there's no eyewitness accounts of that.

  115. So when Paul talks about a resurrection, we could actually believe this because there's,

  116. there's written accounts of eyewitnesses.

  117. So continuing in verses 13, brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I've made it my own.

  118. But one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.

  119. I press on towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  120. So Paul, he says he left behind, in the previous verses, he left behind the status he had.

  121. He left behind, he left behind all these like sins he committed, everything.

  122. He's, he's tried to forget about them to look forward.

  123. Many of us have past hurts.

  124. Many of us have these things that we've committed that we think are so bad that like no one could possibly love us.

  125. Many of us have past accomplishments that we put our pride in, that we hold to.

  126. How many of us can't seem to forget about our past?

  127. Now I'm not saying, and Paul isn't saying that we shouldn't just block out our past,

  128. that we shouldn't just, like we shouldn't suppress it.

  129. We should remember our past.

  130. But when our past controls us, that is when we, that is when it's wrong.

  131. And that's what Paul does.

  132. He wants to forget about the past so we can strain forward,

  133. so he can put all his hope in Jesus, in Jesus Christ.

  134. You could be here, and you don't know God.

  135. And you don't, maybe you don't want to know God.

  136. But you're tormented.

  137. You could be tormented by these pains, these hurts,

  138. or you could put all your pride in these accomplishments that you have.

  139. The world tells you to never forget your past,

  140. or to never forget where you came from.

  141. But it offers you no way to deal with the pain of your past.

  142. It says that it has certain things that could help you,

  143. but in the end, it'll always fail.

  144. And here Paul is saying there's something.

  145. There's a hope.

  146. There's something found in Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.

  147. He strains forward, and that is what he's telling the church in Philippi,

  148. the Philippians, and that's what also we could take from it.

  149. And notice how he says strain in verse 13,

  150. and press on towards the goal in verse 14.

  151. Now, I'm really into climbing.

  152. I've been climbing for about 10 years,

  153. or I guess a little bit more than 10 years now.

  154. And when you get to a certain point in rock climbing,

  155. where once you've done all the easy stuff,

  156. you have to start selecting routes that you want to spend more time in.

  157. A route is when you start from the bottom and you get to the top of the cliff.

  158. There's certain lines in the rock features that you climb,

  159. weaknesses in the rock.

  160. And when you pick these harder routes,

  161. you have to actually train for them.

  162. You have to train your fingers,

  163. your tendons have to be strengthened,

  164. you have to have a general fitness.

  165. And when you pick these routes and you put all that time in,

  166. the goal of climbing is to start from the bottom and get to the top without falling.

  167. But when it comes to climbing,

  168. when you get up to the hard parts,

  169. this thing's called the crux,

  170. the crux of the route.

  171. If you hesitate,

  172. you'll fall.

  173. If you look back,

  174. you'll fall.

  175. And it's the same thing with Olympic athletes.

  176. These people spend their entire lives for the one moment,

  177. the one opportunity they have,

  178. to try to get the gold medal.

  179. And if an Olympic runner was running the race and it was really close,

  180. if he looks back,

  181. that would actually bring him back in the race

  182. because it would reduce his speed.

  183. So when they're running,

  184. they're straining towards the goal,

  185. the prize,

  186. which to them is the gold medal.

  187. But isn't Paul already a Christian?

  188. Why must he strain?

  189. Well,

  190. any goal you set

  191. and become slack in,

  192. you won't achieve it.

  193. And when Paul says,

  194. the goal or prize,

  195. what is he talking about?

  196. He is talking about Jesus.

  197. Jesus is the ultimate prize.

  198. Jesus is the ultimate goal.

  199. The finished work of the cross,

  200. that is the goal,

  201. that is the prize.

  202. You see,

  203. when you put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ,

  204. you are instantly justified.

  205. It's like,

  206. there's this thing that's like,

  207. the already happened.

  208. Because of what Jesus did on the cross,

  209. and when you put your faith and trust in it,

  210. you're instantly justified.

  211. You are right before God.

  212. But then there's also a process after,

  213. and that process is called sanctification.

  214. So what that means is,

  215. when you put your faith and trust in Jesus,

  216. you're justified.

  217. But that doesn't mean you continue on

  218. just doing the same thing you're doing.

  219. You have to actually do a 180

  220. and go the opposite way.

  221. Before I became a Christian,

  222. I was involved in many,

  223. like,

  224. I was doing drugs,

  225. I was a heavy drinker.

  226. I come from a pretty rough past.

  227. And when I became a Christian,

  228. when I had that moment,

  229. if I continued in what I was doing,

  230. I wouldn't have been,

  231. I wouldn't have been the right way.

  232. You have to,

  233. when you become a Christian,

  234. you have to go the other way.

  235. It's a higher calling.

  236. And continuing in verse 15,

  237. Paul says,

  238. let those of us who are mature think this way.

  239. And if in anything you think otherwise,

  240. God will reveal that also to you.

  241. Only let us hold true to what we have obtained.

  242. Now when Paul says mature,

  243. he's not talking about,

  244. he's like,

  245. it's not talking about older people.

  246. When he says mature,

  247. the word in the Greek

  248. could also mean perfect.

  249. But that kind of sounds a bit,

  250. it sounds a bit like Paul's full of himself.

  251. But that's not what he's saying.

  252. What Paul is saying

  253. is those who are,

  254. who are mature slash perfect

  255. are the ones who realize

  256. they are not mature slash perfect.

  257. They're the ones who realize

  258. that they can do nothing

  259. to obtain the prize.

  260. They can do nothing

  261. to obtain the goal.

  262. They have to put all their faith

  263. and trust in Jesus Christ.

  264. They have to let him

  265. win the race for them.

  266. But some of you might be saying,

  267. but surely I've been a good person

  268. and that's enough

  269. to get me right with God.

  270. Other people could be saying,

  271. but I've served at the church

  272. for many years.

  273. Isn't that enough?

  274. Other people could say,

  275. but I tithe

  276. and I follow everything

  277. that the Bible says.

  278. Isn't that enough?

  279. It's only when you realize

  280. that the finished work

  281. of the cross

  282. and your faith in Jesus Christ

  283. is the only way to be saved.

  284. And when you realize that,

  285. that is when you start the race.

  286. That is when you get up

  287. and you start going

  288. towards the goal.

  289. But it's so easy

  290. to get pulled off to the side.

  291. So that's why Paul says

  292. we must strain,

  293. we must press on

  294. towards the goal.

  295. Now as you read Philippians,

  296. there's clearly,

  297. there's a clear distinction

  298. between two themes.

  299. One is this theme of joy.

  300. Paul says joy constantly

  301. through this.

  302. The other theme

  303. is a theme of unity.

  304. And it's interesting

  305. when you look closely at it,

  306. the only way you could get

  307. this joy that Paul talks about

  308. is in the unity.

  309. unity.

  310. And we see that

  311. in verses 15 and 16.

  312. Paul talks about being unified.

  313. He talks about

  314. that we need to,

  315. you guys need to come together

  316. and be unified.

  317. So in climbing,

  318. when you've done

  319. all your training,

  320. when you've done,

  321. when you've picked your route

  322. and when you're trying

  323. to climb it,

  324. you can't just go up

  325. and climb it on your own.

  326. You need a partner.

  327. You need a belayer.

  328. And this belayer

  329. is the person

  330. who feeds your rope out.

  331. He's the one

  332. who gives you all,

  333. gives you the slack,

  334. who keeps the rope tight

  335. in certain spots

  336. that may be a bit more dangerous.

  337. He's the one

  338. who catches you

  339. if you fall.

  340. And the rope,

  341. the rope that's

  342. between the two of you

  343. holds you together

  344. to the cliff.

  345. It is what keeps you

  346. to the cliff.

  347. And most people

  348. who climb without a rope

  349. or without a partner,

  350. unfortunately,

  351. eventually fall

  352. and they die

  353. because they have nothing

  354. to catch them.

  355. And it's the same

  356. with the church

  357. except the gospel of Christ

  358. is the rope.

  359. That is what keeps you

  360. together.

  361. And you have the belayer.

  362. You may think

  363. you don't need fellowship

  364. or you can't relate

  365. to the people

  366. at the church

  367. or you've heard it all before

  368. or the sermons

  369. might be too long

  370. or the service

  371. might be too long

  372. or it doesn't fit

  373. with the way you feel

  374. church service should be.

  375. Well,

  376. I encourage you

  377. to reflect

  378. and look around.

  379. Are you alone?

  380. Do you have

  381. unbearable stress

  382. and no one

  383. to share the burden

  384. with besides

  385. it could be yourself

  386. or your spouse?

  387. We need each other.

  388. It's all through

  389. the New Testament.

  390. It's all through

  391. Philippians.

  392. We need unity.

  393. We need to be together.

  394. And I know

  395. church isn't perfect.

  396. A lot of churches

  397. have a lot of bad things

  398. in it

  399. but we're human.

  400. We're not

  401. perfect people.

  402. And in verse 17

  403. Paul says

  404. Brothers and sisters

  405. join in imitating me

  406. and keep your eyes

  407. on those who walk

  408. according to the examples

  409. to the example

  410. you have in us.

  411. When Paul says this

  412. he's talking to them

  413. because there's many

  414. false teachers

  415. around in the area

  416. who are trying

  417. to infiltrate the church

  418. to make them

  419. go in opposite direction.

  420. And you could

  421. and the way you could

  422. tell a false teacher

  423. is someone who's

  424. contrary to the Bible.

  425. He's contrary to what

  426. they're talking.

  427. So Paul

  428. even though he is human

  429. was confident

  430. in the way he walked.

  431. So he told them

  432. to imitate him.

  433. It's the same way

  434. many people

  435. I myself

  436. will read like a biography

  437. or watch things

  438. on YouTube

  439. about interesting people

  440. and we try to copy them.

  441. We try to live out

  442. the way they live.

  443. And it's kind of the same way

  444. that's what Paul's saying

  445. here.

  446. He says

  447. I follow

  448. the Bible.

  449. I follow scriptures.

  450. So follow

  451. what I'm doing.

  452. And in verse 18

  453. Paul says

  454. for many of whom

  455. I've often told you

  456. and now tell you

  457. even with tears

  458. walk as enemies

  459. of the cross

  460. of Christ.

  461. Their end

  462. is destruction.

  463. Their God

  464. is their belly

  465. and the glory

  466. and their shame

  467. with minds

  468. set on earthly

  469. things.

  470. Now what is the enemy

  471. of the cross

  472. when he says that?

  473. An enemy of the cross

  474. is someone

  475. who's contrary

  476. to the gospel.

  477. Who lives contrary

  478. to the gospel.

  479. But you've got to

  480. look at this

  481. because it says

  482. to the cross

  483. of Christ.

  484. It doesn't say to you.

  485. It's the cross

  486. of Christ.

  487. Christ.

  488. So when there's

  489. people who live

  490. contrary to what

  491. the Bible says

  492. we're not to make

  493. them our enemies.

  494. We're to show them

  495. Jesus.

  496. We're to love

  497. on people.

  498. That is the calling

  499. of a Christian

  500. is to love on people.

  501. Not to make people

  502. our enemies.

  503. Not to segregate people.

  504. But to love on people.

  505. And that is what

  506. Paul's telling them.

  507. And you see

  508. that he cries

  509. for them.

  510. And why does he

  511. cry for them?

  512. Because when you

  513. look at this

  514. Paul knows

  515. these people

  516. that have fallen away.

  517. He would have

  518. talked to them.

  519. He's talking about

  520. Christians who have

  521. fallen away.

  522. My wife Amy

  523. is a huge fan

  524. of Christmas movies.

  525. So I've been watching

  526. Christmas movies

  527. since like

  528. beginning of November.

  529. And one of the

  530. Christmas movies

  531. we watched this year

  532. that I've never seen

  533. this version

  534. is The Christmas Carol.

  535. And there's the

  536. Jim Carrey version.

  537. So The Christmas Carol

  538. if you don't know

  539. what it is

  540. it's a book

  541. by Charles Dickens

  542. from the 19th century.

  543. And

  544. there's a moment

  545. in this

  546. in the movie

  547. where

  548. Scrooge

  549. Scrooge is a man

  550. who's

  551. very stingy

  552. with his money.

  553. He didn't like anyone.

  554. He kept to himself.

  555. The only thing he wanted

  556. to do was make

  557. more money

  558. and more money.

  559. And he didn't want

  560. to share any of it.

  561. And there's a moment

  562. on Christmas Eve

  563. in The Christmas Carol

  564. that he's visited

  565. by his deceased

  566. co-worker

  567. the person he made

  568. his business with.

  569. And his name's Marley.

  570. And Marley

  571. warns Scrooge

  572. that if he doesn't

  573. change his ways

  574. he's going to end up

  575. the same way as him.

  576. And Marley

  577. when he comes into the scene

  578. he's held by chains

  579. to a box of money.

  580. And he can't

  581. grab the box of money

  582. but he always tries

  583. to get it.

  584. But he can't

  585. because he's a ghost.

  586. He can't grab it.

  587. He's tormented.

  588. And there's a moment

  589. when Scrooge

  590. is pulled to the window

  591. as Marley is leaving

  592. after he warns him

  593. that he'd be visited

  594. by three ghosts.

  595. And he looks out.

  596. Scrooge looks out

  597. into the city

  598. and he sees

  599. an entire city

  600. of ghosts

  601. who are controlled

  602. by what they've idolized

  603. through their lives.

  604. And some are controlled

  605. by money.

  606. Some are controlled

  607. by food.

  608. Some are controlled

  609. by their lust.

  610. Some are controlled

  611. by their debts.

  612. Some are controlled

  613. by just trying

  614. to obtain power.

  615. And you see them

  616. going through

  617. all the city

  618. trying to obtain this

  619. but they can't get it.

  620. These are the people

  621. that it's showing

  622. that their end

  623. is destruction

  624. because they weren't

  625. following

  626. they didn't follow

  627. the goal.

  628. And they've tried to

  629. they've tried to

  630. when they're all this

  631. they're trying to

  632. they have no hope.

  633. But as Christians

  634. there is a hope

  635. and that hope

  636. is in Christ.

  637. And that is the only thing

  638. that will break you free

  639. from your desires.

  640. And when Paul talks

  641. about these people

  642. at their end

  643. is their destruction

  644. their God

  645. is their belly

  646. and they glory

  647. in their shame

  648. with minds

  649. set on earthly things

  650. you have to look at

  651. when he says

  652. mindset

  653. when he says

  654. mindset

  655. he's talking about

  656. people

  657. who are

  658. who are gone

  659. the other way

  660. who are

  661. who does not

  662. who aren't living

  663. the Christian life anymore

  664. they're going somewhere else

  665. their minds are

  666. completely set

  667. on another direction.

  668. It's not

  669. he's not talking about

  670. people who struggle

  671. with sins

  672. he's talking about

  673. people who

  674. who are actively

  675. who are glorifying

  676. in the way they live

  677. that are contrary

  678. to the Bible.

  679. And Paul says

  680. something very interesting

  681. in verse 20

  682. when he says

  683. but our citizenship

  684. is in heaven

  685. and from it

  686. we await a savior

  687. the Lord Jesus Christ

  688. who will transform

  689. our lowly body

  690. to be like

  691. his glorious body

  692. by the power

  693. that enables him

  694. even to subject

  695. all things

  696. to himself.

  697. Now there's two

  698. citizenships

  699. that Paul is talking about

  700. there's the worldly

  701. citizenship

  702. and to them

  703. to the Philippian church

  704. in Philippi

  705. their citizenship

  706. would have been

  707. a higher value

  708. in the Roman colonies

  709. because

  710. they were exempted

  711. from taxes

  712. they lived

  713. in a prospering city

  714. so to live there

  715. to have that citizenship

  716. was of great value

  717. to have a Roman citizenship

  718. you have to

  719. pay a high price

  720. unless you're born

  721. into it

  722. and then he talks

  723. about heaven citizenship

  724. heavenly citizenship

  725. this citizenship

  726. is a free

  727. citizenship

  728. that's offered

  729. to everyone

  730. getting a citizenship

  731. in the world

  732. is extremely hard

  733. people come

  734. overseas

  735. and they have to

  736. go through

  737. all this paperwork

  738. and spend many months

  739. trying to get a citizenship

  740. they have to pay

  741. a high fee for it

  742. but this citizenship

  743. is freely given

  744. when you put your faith

  745. and trust in Jesus

  746. all things

  747. that pull you down

  748. won't have their

  749. hold on you

  750. when you strain

  751. for the prize

  752. of seeing Jesus

  753. face to face

  754. when you run

  755. with fellow believers

  756. for the goal

  757. for the goal

  758. you're freely given

  759. your citizenship

  760. will be in heaven

  761. and Christ attained

  762. that on the cross

  763. there's nothing you can do

  764. to attain it

  765. you'll experience

  766. joy of knowing

  767. that you have

  768. a father in heaven

  769. and as we approach

  770. this new year

  771. why not set the goal

  772. of straining towards

  773. the prize

  774. of the gospel

  775. of Christ

  776. straining towards

  777. the ultimate

  778. the ultimate prize

  779. which is being

  780. which is seeing Christ

  781. face to face

  782. and if you don't

  783. know God

  784. now is the time

  785. to call out to him

  786. now is to start

  787. the race

  788. now is the time

  789. to put all the

  790. distractions of the world

  791. and to turn your eyes

  792. to Jesus

  793. now is the time

  794. to know him

  795. please stand

  796. heavenly father

  797. I thank you

  798. thank you for

  799. your word

  800. I thank you for Jesus

  801. and what he did

  802. on the cross

  803. I thank you for the

  804. finished work

  805. of Christ

  806. I'm sure there's

  807. people here

  808. I myself

  809. who struggle

  810. with constantly

  811. looking towards

  812. this goal

  813. and straining

  814. towards it

  815. I ask Lord

  816. that you would

  817. minister to us

  818. you would work

  819. in our lives

  820. you would show us

  821. that nothing else

  822. nothing else

  823. matters

  824. except

  825. except for you

  826. and for

  827. and your glory

  828. and I ask

  829. that you would

  830. you would just

  831. minister to us

  832. Lord

  833. in Jesus name

  834. Amen
