  1. Now, let's turn in our Bibles to the Old Testament book of Ruth.

  2. Ruth chapter 4.

    Ruth 4 chapter mention

  3. And while you're turning there, just to remind you that next Sunday evening will look slightly different.

  4. And that there's a chance for us, after we've thought about a big truth from the Bible,

  5. and what it means for everyday life.

  6. A chance for us to discuss in small groups.

  7. You don't need to stay, but hopefully be a helpful time for us to work those truths into our hearts and lives.

  8. So we're doing that for six weeks, and so everyone's very welcome to that.

  9. Ruth chapter 4.

    Ruth 4 chapter mention

  10. As we finish this wonderful story.

  11. Meanwhile, Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian redeemer he had mentioned came along.

  12. Boaz said, come over here, my friend, and sit down.

  13. So he went over and sat down.

  14. Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said, sit here.

  15. And they did so.

  16. Then he said to the guardian redeemer,

  17. Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimele.

  18. I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people.

  19. If you will redeem it, do so.

  20. But if you will not, tell me.

  21. So I will know.

  22. For no one has the right to do it except you, and I am next in line.

  23. I will redeem it, he said.

  24. Then Boaz said, on the day you buy the land from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the dead man's widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property.

  25. At this, the guardian redeemer said, then I cannot redeem it.

  26. Because I might endanger my own estate.

  27. You redeeming yourself, I cannot do it.

  28. Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal and gave it to the other.

  29. This was the method of legalizing transactions in Israel.

  30. So the guardian redeemer said to Boaz, buy it yourself, and he removed his sandal.

  31. Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people,

  32. Today you are witnesses.

  33. I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech, Kilian, and Margo.

  34. I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Malon's widow as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property,

  35. so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his home town.

  36. Today you are witnesses.

  37. Then the elders and all the people at the gate said, we are witnesses.

  38. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the family of Israel.

  39. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.

  40. Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman.

  41. May your family be like that of Herod, whom Tamar bore to Judah.

  42. So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife.

  43. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.

  44. The woman said to Naomi, praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian redeemer.

  45. May he become famous throughout Israel.

  46. He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age.

  47. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you, and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.

  48. Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for her.

  49. The woman living there said, Naomi has a son, and they named him Obed.

  50. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

  51. This thing is the family life of Perez.

  52. Perez was the father of Hezron.

  53. Hezron, the father of Ram.

  54. Ram, the father of Aminadah.

  55. Aminadah, the father of Neshon.

  56. Neshon, the father of Salmon.

  57. Salmon, the father of Boaz.

  58. Boaz, the father of Obed.

  59. Obed, the father of Jesse.

  60. And Jesse, the father of David.

  61. Amen.

  62. And that's how the book of Ruth ends.

  63. So this week, as I was reading, especially the conclusion, I was thinking, how different would the book of Ruth look if Disney did Ruth?

  64. We know that we'd done Moses.

  65. What if they did Ruth?

  66. Well, certainly they would focus on what we have in the story of Ruth.

  67. We've got this on the boy meets girl.

  68. We've got the romantic angle.

  69. What we've seen is the story of Ruth is one of love across death grids.

  70. Ruth is from Moab, a foreigner to Israel.

  71. You can imagine Disney would like the rescue.

  72. We've spoken of Boaz as a redeemer.

  73. So the idea of a heroic rescue, perhaps.

  74. And certainly, Disney, they would all live happily ever after.

  75. Then we come to the true story, to the Bible story.

  76. We see that some of those things are there, but there's also some surprises.

  77. So we have got a rescue.

  78. We have got a redeemer.

  79. But there's not so much in the way of dramatic rescue.

  80. It's taking place in a courtroom.

  81. And we do have a happily ever after, but there's a surprising focus to it.

  82. Because it's almost as if Ruth and Boaz are going to disappear out of shot.

  83. And the focus is on Naomi.

  84. And then it's on the nation of history.

  85. So we're given a happy ending, but it's a surprisingly big one.

  86. Because this story began in the dark days of the judges.

  87. And what we know about the days of the judges is that everybody was doing just whatever they wanted to do.

  88. So there was moral and spiritual, religious chaos.

  89. And in the days of the judges were told that there was no king.

  90. So the hope at the end of the judges is that God would provide a king as the answer to the darkness.

  91. And how does Ruth end?

  92. Ruth ends with a family line that leads us to King David.

  93. So the hope in the story of Ruth comes first of all in that God provides a redeemer, this man called Boaz.

  94. But he also does that so as to provide for a king called David.

  95. And so we take the whole story of Ruth in view, especially when we come to chapter 4 here.

  96. And we see again how this helps to highlight for us God's redeeming love.

  97. That this is much more than a happily ever after for Naomi or for Israel.

  98. That through Jesus, the redeemer, who is also God's king, there can be good news for each one of us.

  99. There is hope extended to a world that is lost in sin, that is knowing much hope, brokenness and confusion, just like the judges.

  100. We can find hope in the sending, in the promise of Jesus.

  101. So let's look at this story together for a little while.

  102. Looking first of all at this first scene, which takes place in the courtroom.

  103. So we can see a family rescue that is taking place in the first 12 verses here in the courtroom in Bethlehem.

  104. And I guess we, as a culture, we enjoy a good courtroom drama.

  105. We have some classics, the 12 Magnum Ends, Kill a Mockingbird, we have our John Grissoms, we like.

  106. Courtroom dramas.

  107. This one takes place in Bethlehem.

  108. And it takes place at the city gates.

  109. So let's dive into this.

  110. And let's see, first of all, the preparation for the courtroom.

  111. We see in verse 1, if you have your Bibles, Boaz goes up to the town gate.

  112. And the town gate in that day was the courtroom of his day.

  113. That's where community business happened.

  114. So he deliberately goes to the town gate.

  115. And then we see, again, God's guiding hand.

  116. Boaz is just sat down, just as the guardian redeemer he had mentioned came along.

  117. So just as we've seen all throughout the book of Ruth, God is guiding action so that Boaz might serve as redeemer.

  118. So what does Boaz say?

  119. He says, come over here, my friend, and sit down.

  120. And that's not, let's sit down for a cozy chat.

  121. This is sit down, let's transact some legal business here.

  122. And we see that because the next thing that Boaz does, verse 2, is he calls 10 of the elders of the town to sit.

  123. So they act, in that sense that we think about that, during the act as witnesses to all that's about to unfold.

  124. So the preparation has been made.

  125. And now in verses 3 to 8, we can see it here.

  126. We've got a report of what happens in the court.

  127. And it's very much driven by the words of Boaz.

  128. And so he says to his friends, here's the situation.

  129. There is Naomi.

  130. She's part of your family.

  131. She is in poverty.

  132. She's needing to sell the family land.

  133. You're in the legal position to buy it, to act as her protector.

  134. Are you willing?

  135. So this unnamed actor, and I think it's deliberately unnamed because he serves as a contrast to Boaz.

  136. He's thinking, okay, I'm being asked to care for an old lady.

  137. And when she dies, I will receive her land.

  138. And I can add it to my inheritance.

  139. So he says, yes, I am willing.

  140. And at that stage, Boaz turns to him and says, well, there's one more complicated factor.

  141. When you buy the land, you also will inherit a new wife, Ruth.

  142. And you have to raise a family with her in order to keep that land, to keep the family line of Elimelech going.

  143. And at that stage, this unnamed guardian or kinsman redeemer said, no, no, thank you.

  144. I can't do that.

  145. It seems like perhaps the cost was too high.

  146. I can mean the financial cost was too high to care for Naomi, to care for Lou.

  147. Perhaps he certainly thought that there was a risk of his estate being weakened.

  148. Boaz also deliberately draws attention to the fact that Ruth is from Moab.

  149. Perhaps he felt there was a risk to his status to take to his own home someone who is from outside of Israel.

  150. But either way, he says to Boaz, I am not willing to be the redeemer.

  151. You do.

  152. And then we come to that unusual bit in verse 7 and verse 8.

  153. We find that legal practice of the sandal swap.

  154. Legal practices, I guess, adapt over time.

  155. We discover that even here in the book of Ruth.

  156. This idea of taking off your sandal and giving it to the other party.

  157. Say, here's a transfer that's now taken place and being formalized.

  158. They didn't do that in the time of writing anymore.

  159. But with that sandal being taken and handed over, the deal is now sealed.

  160. There is an agreement that Boaz is going to function as the kinsman redeemer.

  161. He is going to pay the price to secure the land for Naomi.

  162. He's going to commit to Ruth and to raising a family with her.

  163. And that takes us to Boaz's response in verses 9 and 10.

  164. And what does he do?

  165. He asks the elders and all the people who were gathered to be witnesses.

  166. To be witnesses to those two realities.

  167. The one who will act as the kinsman redeemer to secure the family land.

  168. But also that he's going to take Ruth as his wife.

  169. To preserve Maraul's family name.

  170. And then we get verses 11 and 12.

  171. The reaction in the courtroom.

  172. Where they announce that they are willing to be witnesses.

  173. And then what we see is that they seek blessing from Boaz.

  174. One of the wonderful features of Boaz is that in every scene he is regarded as honorable.

  175. He is presented to us as a man of faith.

  176. And so this crowd, the elders and others, they seek this blessing from Boaz.

  177. And it's got some significant features.

  178. And so they want that Ruth, this Moabite foreigner,

  179. would have as significant a part in the story of Israel as Rachel and Leah.

  180. And they're mothers of the first twelve.

  181. And they became the twelve tribes of Israel.

  182. And may the Lord make the women who's coming into your home like Rachel and Leah.

  183. And together build up the family of Israel.

  184. They seek a blessing and a legacy of faith on Boaz.

  185. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.

  186. And then in verse twelve.

  187. It says,

  188. Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young man,

  189. may your family, a bit like that, of Perez,

  190. whom Tamar bore to Judah.

  191. And this is interesting.

  192. This is another one of those Old Testament legal details.

  193. Tamar, this woman Tamar,

  194. is the other famous,

  195. it's called a leperate marriage in the Old Testament.

  196. And so where there is a widow who dies without children,

  197. and it's the responsibility of a family member,

  198. a brother,

  199. to raise a family for the dead man.

  200. Tamar,

  201. Genesis thirty-eight,

  202. is the other famous story.

  203. And there's some parallels,

  204. and then some significant differences.

  205. But we get to verse twelve,

  206. and we get to the end of this courtroom scene.

  207. And what we discover is that Boaz,

  208. the hero in our story,

  209. he has,

  210. and that's it,

  211. won his case,

  212. and there's honour that's given to him.

  213. And we can imagine the courtroom breaking into cheers,

  214. perhaps.

  215. And they ask for these wonderfully large blessings

  216. to come to Boaz.

  217. But little did they know

  218. how God would answer so far above and beyond their expectations.

  219. That God's plans for this family in Bethlehem

  220. would include the future king of Israel,

  221. the king after God's own heart.

  222. Little did they know

  223. that Ruth would be in the family line of the Lord Jesus.

  224. Little did they imagine

  225. how God was going to use this little family

  226. to demonstrate God's covenant faithfulness

  227. far beyond Bethlehem

  228. to all peoples everywhere.

  229. Now before we leave the courtroom,

  230. maybe a couple of lessons to draw.

  231. First of all,

  232. thinking about Boaz.

  233. And to think about Boaz

  234. as an everyday hero of faith.

  235. You know,

  236. we think about,

  237. maybe we think about our Sunday school heroes.

  238. They're usually known for very courageous,

  239. brave acts.

  240. Maybe in battle,

  241. we think of our Gideons

  242. and our Davids even.

  243. But here is Boaz,

  244. and he's just a wonderful,

  245. upstanding man of faith.

  246. He is a model employer

  247. who seeks God's blessing

  248. on those who work in his fields.

  249. He protects and cares

  250. for those who are vulnerable

  251. as they work.

  252. He shows mercy

  253. to an outsider.

  254. He extends hospitality.

  255. We see him absolutely committed

  256. to this work of

  257. being a redeemer

  258. for Naomi and Ruth

  259. and honoring Ruth

  260. for her covenant loyalty

  261. in the dark days.

  262. In the dark days of the judges,

  263. boy,

  264. that shines bright

  265. for his faith.

  266. And isn't that a wonderful

  267. call to us

  268. as the people have gotten

  269. an encouragement to us?

  270. To be faithful

  271. in the everyday

  272. stuff of life.

  273. So much of this

  274. isn't spectacular

  275. in that sense,

  276. but called

  277. to be faithful

  278. to honor God

  279. in what

  280. we're given

  281. to do.

  282. And do you know

  283. we do that

  284. understanding

  285. that God

  286. has his plans

  287. for how he will

  288. use them.

  289. Now, we don't know

  290. what those plans are,

  291. but God does.

  292. What does he call us to do?

  293. He calls us

  294. to be faithful

  295. in the everyday

  296. stuff of life.

  297. Knowing that that's

  298. how he is able

  299. to work

  300. in and through

  301. us.

  302. Let's also think

  303. about the sacrifice

  304. of Boaz.

  305. Because we meet

  306. Boaz in chapter 2

  307. and never once

  308. do we find Boaz

  309. asking what's in it

  310. for me.

  311. He is committed

  312. to serve,

  313. to honor,

  314. to love.

  315. Never thinking

  316. about the cost

  317. to himself.

  318. Or the things

  319. are affected

  320. because he's

  321. willing to pay.

  322. And he stands

  323. in stark contrast

  324. to this guy

  325. who was supposed

  326. to act as the

  327. guardian redeemer.

  328. I would say,

  329. no, that risk

  330. is too high,

  331. that cost is too high

  332. I'm unwilling to pay.

  333. I'm unwilling

  334. to care for

  335. this old lady.

  336. I'm unwilling

  337. to extend

  338. her family life.

  339. I wonder

  340. if we recognize

  341. something of that

  342. dependency

  343. in our own

  344. hearts and lives.

  345. Perhaps

  346. to be asking,

  347. well, what's in it

  348. for me when it

  349. comes to

  350. serving the church?

  351. what's the cost

  352. going to be?

  353. Is this going

  354. to be too much

  355. of an inconvenience

  356. for me and my

  357. family for the

  358. things that I

  359. want to do?

  360. I think Boaz

  361. stands as a

  362. wonderful reminder

  363. of that call

  364. that we have

  365. knowing how God

  366. has been so

  367. kind to us

  368. and served us

  369. that he calls

  370. us to serve

  371. others,

  372. to care for

  373. others,

  374. to have a heart

  375. for those who

  376. are needy.

  377. so we don't

  378. want to be like

  379. that,

  380. but we want

  381. to be like

  382. Boaz.

  383. But then to

  384. think about

  385. the way

  386. that Boaz's

  387. story goes

  388. and we find

  389. him in this

  390. courtroom scene

  391. taking the

  392. initiative to

  393. function as

  394. the redeemer,

  395. that also helps

  396. us to think

  397. about the

  398. gospel and

  399. it helps us

  400. think about

  401. God's amazing

  402. grace.

  403. Because we

  404. find legal

  405. language being

  406. used at the

  407. gospel,

  408. we find the

  409. idea of the

  410. judge and a

  411. judgment being

  412. used in the

  413. storyline of the

  414. Bible.

  415. And what we

  416. need to understand

  417. as people is

  418. that our place

  419. in God's

  420. courtroom by

  421. nature,

  422. our standing

  423. in the drama

  424. of human history,

  425. where do we

  426. find ourselves

  427. in God's

  428. courtroom?

  429. We would

  430. find ourselves

  431. by nature

  432. in the

  433. dog,

  434. standing before

  435. God the

  436. judge guilty

  437. as charged.

  438. guilty of

  439. pride,

  440. that we

  441. live without

  442. God,

  443. guilty of

  444. idolatry,

  445. where we

  446. would make

  447. other things

  448. to be as

  449. important and

  450. more important

  451. to us than

  452. God,

  453. guilty of

  454. rebellion,

  455. where we

  456. ignore God

  457. as king and

  458. turn our

  459. back on his

  460. law.

  461. All of those

  462. realities the

  463. Bible calls

  464. sin, so we

  465. would stand

  466. in the dog

  467. guilty as

  468. charged and

  469. we would

  470. have no

  471. case for

  472. the defense.

  473. As the

  474. Bible says,

  475. every mouth

  476. will be

  477. silenced

  478. before God

  479. the righteous

  480. judge.

  481. That's us

  482. by nature

  483. without God's

  484. intervention.

  485. And then we

  486. need to see

  487. how Boaz

  488. points us

  489. to the

  490. coming of

  491. Jesus,

  492. because into

  493. this courtroom

  494. drama steps

  495. Jesus, and

  496. Jesus is

  497. willing to

  498. become our

  499. legal

  500. representative.

  501. He is the

  502. judge, but

  503. he enters

  504. the dog and

  505. he takes

  506. our place

  507. and he

  508. takes our

  509. punishment.

  510. That there

  511. on the cross

  512. the judge is

  513. judged for

  514. us.

  515. He is

  516. condemned so

  517. that we

  518. might be

  519. forgiven and

  520. set free to

  521. enjoy peace

  522. with God.

  523. That faith in

  524. Jesus means

  525. that we receive

  526. the declaration

  527. over us that

  528. we are

  529. righteous, that

  530. we are not

  531. condemned.

  532. Jesus, the

  533. judge who

  534. has taken

  535. our place,

  536. he is ready

  537. to honour

  538. us and to

  539. take us

  540. home to

  541. where he

  542. is.

  543. And so

  544. great is

  545. his love

  546. for us, a

  547. great love

  548. that far

  549. exceeds that

  550. even of

  551. Boaz.

  552. The story

  553. of Ruth

  554. and the

  555. story of

  556. Boaz, it

  557. also reminds

  558. us about

  559. how wide

  560. God's

  561. grace is.

  562. Because in

  563. God's

  564. kingdom we

  565. discover there

  566. is grace

  567. and there

  568. is a

  569. welcome for

  570. Ruth.

  571. Yes, she

  572. is from

  573. Moab and

  574. yes, she

  575. was serving

  576. other gods

  577. but now

  578. she has

  579. come to

  580. faith in

  581. the one

  582. true God

  583. and there

  584. is grace

  585. for her.

  586. And in

  587. God's

  588. wisdom and

  589. God's

  590. mercy, she

  591. is in

  592. the family

  593. tree of

  594. Jesus.

  595. How is

  596. Jesus known

  597. when he

  598. came to

  599. live among

  600. us?

  601. He was

  602. known as

  603. the friend

  604. of sinners.

  605. Some people

  606. hated him

  607. for that.

  608. Religious

  609. people should

  610. just stay

  611. with religious

  612. types.

  613. And Jesus

  614. would just

  615. come for the

  616. good.

  617. God would

  618. just want to

  619. say that

  620. that wasn't

  621. Jesus'

  622. pattern.

  623. Others

  624. loved him

  625. for the fact

  626. he was

  627. friend of

  628. sinners,

  629. especially

  630. those that

  631. everybody else

  632. despised.

  633. Those that

  634. were on the

  635. margins, they

  636. flocked to

  637. Jesus because

  638. they knew

  639. they were

  640. by mercy

  641. and grace.

  642. Yes, they

  643. would be

  644. confronted about

  645. their sin, but

  646. they would also

  647. have the

  648. prospect of

  649. forgiveness and

  650. life of God

  651. through him.

  652. And what we

  653. see in the

  654. gospels is

  655. his deliberate

  656. kindness to

  657. the least and

  658. to the most

  659. unlikely.

  660. And it's

  661. what we see

  662. all through

  663. the Bible,

  664. it's what we

  665. see in the

  666. story of

  667. grace.

  668. And so as

  669. we think

  670. about that,

  671. if that's

  672. God's

  673. pattern in the

  674. Old Testament,

  675. that plan

  676. right from

  677. the beginning

  678. to extend

  679. his blessing

  680. to all

  681. the nations,

  682. and if that

  683. was the

  684. pattern of

  685. Jesus,

  686. it makes

  687. us ask

  688. some practical

  689. questions of

  690. ourselves.

  691. Who is my

  692. welcome,

  693. brothers?

  694. How is the

  695. mercy and

  696. kindness of

  697. God expressed

  698. by me to

  699. others?

  700. What is our

  701. attitude to

  702. the poor?

  703. What is our

  704. attitude?

  705. to those who

  706. come from

  707. other nations

  708. to live

  709. among us

  710. and to

  711. worship

  712. with us?

  713. Where we

  714. be as

  715. broad as

  716. our King,

  717. as loving

  718. as King

  719. Jesus.

  720. Well,

  721. let's move

  722. from the

  723. courtroom to

  724. where our

  725. story closes

  726. in the

  727. family home

  728. of Boaz

  729. and Ruth.

  730. I hear the

  731. focus isn't

  732. just on the

  733. rescue of

  734. this family,

  735. the focus is

  736. now on the

  737. royal family

  738. line.

  739. In a sense,

  740. we might

  741. expect

  742. chapter 4,

  743. verse 13,

  744. to be where

  745. the story

  746. would end.

  747. This is the

  748. happy ending

  749. we expect.

  750. We've been

  751. looking forward

  752. to seeing

  753. Boaz and

  754. Ruth be

  755. married,

  756. and then

  757. nine months

  758. later,

  759. as the

  760. drama moves

  761. on,

  762. a son is

  763. born.

  764. If this

  765. was dizzy,

  766. you'd hear the

  767. big song,

  768. to be

  769. incredibly

  770. credited.

  771. That's not

  772. where we

  773. finish.

  774. Rather,

  775. what we

  776. see is the

  777. director of

  778. this story

  779. having this

  780. wide-angle

  781. lens on

  782. joy,

  783. so that

  784. we also

  785. find joy,

  786. verse 17,

  787. in the fact

  788. that Naomi

  789. has a

  790. son.

  791. So we're

  792. back to

  793. thinking about

  794. God's

  795. provision for

  796. Naomi.

  797. And then

  798. in verse

  799. 17 and

  800. verse 22,

  801. we're left

  802. with the

  803. good news

  804. that the

  805. nation has

  806. a king.

  807. Obey was

  808. the father

  809. of Jesse,

  810. and Jesse,

  811. the father

  812. of the

  813. king.

  814. Verse 13

  815. is also

  816. significant.

  817. Because it's

  818. only the

  819. second time

  820. in the

  821. story where

  822. God is

  823. named as

  824. an actor.

  825. We see

  826. him directing,

  827. as it were,

  828. behind the

  829. scenes,

  830. guiding in

  831. providence,

  832. but here we

  833. see the

  834. Lord enabled

  835. Ruth to

  836. conceive.

  837. In chapter

  838. 1 and

  839. verse 6,

  840. the Lord

  841. had come to

  842. aid of his

  843. people by

  844. providing

  845. food.

  846. And now

  847. the Lord

  848. has come

  849. and provided

  850. a child

  851. for Ruth

  852. and for

  853. Boaz.

  854. She had

  855. been married

  856. for 10

  857. years to

  858. Madeline,

  859. and no

  860. child ever

  861. here,

  862. by God's

  863. grace,

  864. she is

  865. able to

  866. conceive.

  867. And again,

  868. to highlight

  869. God's glory

  870. and God's

  871. grace,

  872. we find this

  873. theme throughout

  874. the story of

  875. the Bible.

  876. Women who

  877. are unable

  878. to have

  879. children,

  880. they're enabled

  881. by the

  882. grace of

  883. God to

  884. conceive.

  885. We find

  886. it back

  887. with the

  888. story of

  889. Abraham and

  890. Sarah,

  891. we find

  892. it with

  893. Rebecca and

  894. with Rachel,

  895. we find it

  896. with Hannah

  897. and we find

  898. it with

  899. Ruth.

  900. Whenever

  901. there is

  902. an act of

  903. God to

  904. enable someone

  905. to conceive

  906. and give

  907. birth to a

  908. child,

  909. we know

  910. that God

  911. is going

  912. to use

  913. that child

  914. for his

  915. own purpose.

  916. And that

  917. prepares us

  918. for the

  919. beginning of

  920. the New

  921. Testament

  922. for the

  923. greatest

  924. miraculous

  925. conception

  926. when God

  927. by the

  928. power of

  929. the Holy

  930. Spirit

  931. would cause

  932. Jesus to

  933. be conceived

  934. in the womb

  935. of the

  936. Virgin Mary,

  937. the great

  938. Redeemer,

  939. the great

  940. King has

  941. come.

  942. But back

  943. to our

  944. story,

  945. verses 14

  946. to 17,

  947. what we

  948. find is

  949. Naomi's

  950. friends

  951. gathering

  952. in the

  953. family home

  954. and it's

  955. very much

  956. her story

  957. that's in

  958. view,

  959. we would

  960. probably

  961. expect

  962. Boaz and

  963. Ruth to

  964. be in

  965. view,

  966. but the

  967. focus is

  968. on Naomi.

  969. Naomi

  970. who left

  971. many years

  972. before with

  973. a husband

  974. and two

  975. sons.

  976. Naomi

  977. who came

  978. back with

  979. Ruth to

  980. Bethlehem

  981. and she

  982. came back

  983. bitter,

  984. came back

  985. empty,

  986. came back

  987. feeling the

  988. Lord's hand

  989. was against

  990. her.

  991. Now her

  992. friends are

  993. saying,

  994. praise thee

  995. to the

  996. Lord who

  997. this day

  998. has not

  999. left you

  1000. without a

  1001. guardian

  1002. redeemer.

  1003. They can

  1004. see just

  1005. as Naomi

  1006. can see

  1007. God's

  1008. gracious

  1009. hand at

  1010. work in

  1011. her life.

  1012. Now in

  1013. chapter 2

  1014. and 3 the

  1015. focus of

  1016. the guardian

  1017. redeemer was

  1018. Boaz,

  1019. but did you

  1020. notice as we

  1021. read chapter 4

  1022. how it

  1023. switched?

  1024. None of the

  1025. guardian

  1026. redeemer in

  1027. Naomi's

  1028. like,

  1029. it is this

  1030. little child

  1031. who has

  1032. been born,

  1033. little

  1034. Obeg.

  1035. And why

  1036. is he the

  1037. kinsman

  1038. redeemer?

  1039. Because for

  1040. this elderly

  1041. widow,

  1042. having a

  1043. son in

  1044. her family

  1045. was for

  1046. her a

  1047. source of

  1048. security.

  1049. Obeg,

  1050. when he

  1051. grows up,

  1052. will be

  1053. able to

  1054. work to

  1055. provide for

  1056. Naomi and

  1057. for Ruth.

  1058. And through

  1059. Obeg,

  1060. the family

  1061. land will

  1062. be killed.

  1063. So we

  1064. have this

  1065. wonderful

  1066. story where

  1067. Naomi is

  1068. really moved

  1069. and motivated

  1070. towards,

  1071. at the

  1072. beginning,

  1073. finding a

  1074. place of

  1075. rest,

  1076. a home,

  1077. and security

  1078. for Ruth.

  1079. First of all

  1080. telling her to

  1081. go back to

  1082. her own land

  1083. and her own

  1084. people,

  1085. and then to

  1086. seek that

  1087. rest from

  1088. Boaz.

  1089. And God

  1090. provides for

  1091. Ruth through

  1092. Boaz,

  1093. but also has

  1094. provided for

  1095. Naomi.

  1096. His kindness

  1097. is so much

  1098. wider than

  1099. Naomi could

  1100. anticipate.

  1101. And then we

  1102. look at the

  1103. request and

  1104. the prayer of

  1105. blessing from

  1106. Naomi's

  1107. bride.

  1108. Verse 14,

  1109. may he,

  1110. may this

  1111. child,

  1112. Obeg,

  1113. may he

  1114. become famous

  1115. throughout

  1116. Israel.

  1117. And again,

  1118. God's going to

  1119. answer that

  1120. prayer above

  1121. and beyond.

  1122. They're asking

  1123. as Obeg

  1124. becomes the

  1125. grandfather

  1126. in the

  1127. fullness of

  1128. time of

  1129. King David.

  1130. Just as

  1131. a, in a

  1132. sense, as

  1133. a by-the-by,

  1134. God

  1135. encourages

  1136. our

  1137. dependent

  1138. prayers,

  1139. and God

  1140. encourages us

  1141. to pray

  1142. big.

  1143. Because our

  1144. God is

  1145. powerful,

  1146. and our

  1147. God is

  1148. generous,

  1149. and we

  1150. will never

  1151. out-ask

  1152. our God.

  1153. And so,

  1154. stories like

  1155. this, and

  1156. prayers like

  1157. this, as we

  1158. see their

  1159. fulfillment,

  1160. encourage us,

  1161. should encourage

  1162. us to pray

  1163. and to keep

  1164. praying for

  1165. God's kingdom

  1166. to come and

  1167. his will to be

  1168. done in our

  1169. church, in our

  1170. city, in our

  1171. families, in our

  1172. world.

  1173. And then

  1174. verse 15,

  1175. notice the

  1176. praise that

  1177. Ruth has

  1178. given.

  1179. If you're

  1180. a doctor

  1181. in law,

  1182. who loves

  1183. you, and

  1184. who's

  1185. better to

  1186. you than

  1187. seven sons

  1188. is given

  1189. birth.

  1190. And again,

  1191. what's in

  1192. view here,

  1193. it is the

  1194. covenant love,

  1195. the faithfulness,

  1196. the loyalty,

  1197. the love in

  1198. action of

  1199. Ruth.

  1200. The whole

  1201. book is

  1202. full of

  1203. covenant

  1204. faithfulness,

  1205. from Ruth,

  1206. from Boaz,

  1207. and ultimately

  1208. from God

  1209. himself.

  1210. Verse 17,

  1211. we come to

  1212. a naming

  1213. ceremony.

  1214. name.

  1215. The women

  1216. living there

  1217. said,

  1218. Naomi has

  1219. a son,

  1220. and they

  1221. named him

  1222. Obeg.

  1223. And the

  1224. name Obeg

  1225. means he

  1226. serves.

  1227. And so the

  1228. natural question

  1229. to ask is,

  1230. who is it

  1231. that Obeg

  1232. serves?

  1233. And there

  1234. are two

  1235. ways, I

  1236. think,

  1237. the story

  1238. of Ruth

  1239. invites us

  1240. to answer.

  1241. First of

  1242. all,

  1243. Obeg

  1244. serves God,

  1245. and serves

  1246. God's purposes,

  1247. because he

  1248. becomes God's

  1249. agent to

  1250. remove that

  1251. bitterness and

  1252. that emptiness

  1253. from Naomi,

  1254. providing a

  1255. future and a

  1256. security for

  1257. her.

  1258. And so he

  1259. serves God,

  1260. but he also

  1261. serves Naomi

  1262. by functioning

  1263. as that

  1264. redeemer,

  1265. by being that

  1266. source of

  1267. security and

  1268. rest.

  1269. And so

  1270. what do we

  1271. would expect?

  1272. Wow, okay,

  1273. so here's Ruth

  1274. and she's got a

  1275. child, and Naomi

  1276. has a son,

  1277. and she's got

  1278. this kinsman,

  1279. and we would

  1280. expect a

  1281. happy life

  1282. after here.

  1283. But we're

  1284. still not

  1285. done.

  1286. And we're

  1287. not done

  1288. because the

  1289. author of

  1290. the book of

  1291. Ruth has

  1292. taken us

  1293. all the way

  1294. from the

  1295. dark days

  1296. of the

  1297. judges to

  1298. the wonderful

  1299. kindness of

  1300. God in

  1301. giving the

  1302. king after

  1303. God's own

  1304. heart,

  1305. King David.

  1306. And so the

  1307. true happily

  1308. ever after

  1309. doesn't come

  1310. until we move

  1311. beyond God

  1312. providing the

  1313. redeemer at

  1314. the time of

  1315. the judges

  1316. to providing

  1317. the king

  1318. through David

  1319. and through

  1320. this royal

  1321. family.

  1322. And so we

  1323. finish with

  1324. a genealogy.

  1325. That's never

  1326. how we would

  1327. expect a great

  1328. love story to

  1329. finish.

  1330. But it's so

  1331. important to the

  1332. people of God

  1333. to see God's

  1334. faithfulness working

  1335. through the

  1336. generations,

  1337. working through

  1338. Ruth and Boaz

  1339. to take us

  1340. to David.

  1341. David.

  1342. When Matthew

  1343. came to

  1344. write his

  1345. gospel,

  1346. that's when

  1347. he started

  1348. with a

  1349. genealogy,

  1350. taking us

  1351. through this

  1352. family to

  1353. the coming

  1354. of Jesus.

  1355. In the

  1356. dark times

  1357. in which

  1358. Jesus came

  1359. to a world

  1360. lost without

  1361. God,

  1362. that genealogy

  1363. reminds the

  1364. world that

  1365. God is

  1366. faithful,

  1367. that God

  1368. is working

  1369. out his

  1370. covenant

  1371. purposes,

  1372. showing covenant

  1373. faithfulness,

  1374. working out

  1375. his plan.

  1376. And so we

  1377. leave the

  1378. wonderful book

  1379. of Ruth

  1380. behind,

  1381. having celebrated

  1382. in every

  1383. chapter God's

  1384. covenant love,

  1385. God's

  1386. redeeming love.

  1387. chapter 4

  1388. finished with

  1389. a wedding

  1390. and with

  1391. a family

  1392. tree.

  1393. And with

  1394. the covenant

  1395. commitment of

  1396. Ruth and

  1397. Boaz,

  1398. with them

  1399. coming together

  1400. and with

  1401. Obed being

  1402. born.

  1403. When we

  1404. think about

  1405. our wedding

  1406. services,

  1407. and we

  1408. have a

  1409. husband and

  1410. a wife

  1411. coming to

  1412. make vows,

  1413. with four

  1414. family,

  1415. with four

  1416. friends,

  1417. with four

  1418. children,

  1419. with four

  1420. God,

  1421. committing for

  1422. richer and

  1423. for poorer,

  1424. for sickness

  1425. and in

  1426. health,

  1427. and better

  1428. and for

  1429. worse till

  1430. death do

  1431. us part.

  1432. It's a

  1433. covenant

  1434. relationship,

  1435. binding,

  1436. lifelong,

  1437. covenant

  1438. love.

  1439. Now when we

  1440. think about

  1441. Boaz and

  1442. Ruth, we

  1443. learn what

  1444. covenant

  1445. love looks

  1446. like.

  1447. It looks

  1448. like active

  1449. service,

  1450. it looks

  1451. like sacrifice,

  1452. for the

  1453. other.

  1454. It looks

  1455. like devotion

  1456. and hard

  1457. work and

  1458. generosity

  1459. and hospitality.

  1460. And one

  1461. of the things

  1462. that we're

  1463. laying with in

  1464. the book of

  1465. Ruth is

  1466. these wonderful

  1467. figures to

  1468. admire and

  1469. to aspire

  1470. towards.

  1471. In our

  1472. marriages,

  1473. in our

  1474. families,

  1475. in our

  1476. friendships,

  1477. to be

  1478. showing this

  1479. love and

  1480. loyalty,

  1481. this active

  1482. loving

  1483. service.

  1484. But we

  1485. don't want to

  1486. stop just

  1487. for the

  1488. human

  1489. actors.

  1490. And we

  1491. need to

  1492. see God

  1493. and his

  1494. covenant

  1495. faith

  1496. with him.

  1497. That he

  1498. is committed

  1499. to loving

  1500. and to

  1501. saving sinful,

  1502. rebellious

  1503. people.

  1504. So committed

  1505. that he

  1506. will work

  1507. his plans

  1508. through history

  1509. to give us

  1510. a redeemer

  1511. who is a

  1512. king,

  1513. whose name

  1514. is Jesus.

  1515. Jesus who

  1516. came to

  1517. establish the

  1518. new covenant

  1519. with his

  1520. church by

  1521. giving his

  1522. own body

  1523. and blood

  1524. for us.

  1525. Do we

  1526. know this

  1527. love?

  1528. Do we

  1529. rest in

  1530. the covenant

  1531. love of

  1532. God?

  1533. Do we

  1534. all know

  1535. this love

  1536. for ourselves?

  1537. Let's pray

  1538. together.

  1539. Lord God,

  1540. thank you

  1541. for this

  1542. wonderful story

  1543. that we've

  1544. been able to

  1545. reflect on

  1546. for the last

  1547. few weeks.

  1548. We thank

  1549. you for

  1550. the many

  1551. pictures of

  1552. covenant

  1553. love and

  1554. faithfulness

  1555. we see in

  1556. the human

  1557. actors.

  1558. We thank

  1559. you too

  1560. for the

  1561. covenant

  1562. faithfulness

  1563. we see

  1564. from you,

  1565. our God.

  1566. Thank you

  1567. for your

  1568. work of

  1569. providence

  1570. in guiding

  1571. and directing

  1572. so that a

  1573. redeemer was

  1574. found,

  1575. so a king

  1576. would come,

  1577. ultimately

  1578. so that

  1579. King Jesus,

  1580. our great

  1581. redeemer,

  1582. would come.

  1583. Lord,

  1584. help us to

  1585. enjoy his

  1586. love and

  1587. give us the

  1588. help we

  1589. need to

  1590. reflect that

  1591. love, to

  1592. demonstrate that

  1593. love to

  1594. one another.

  1595. Lord, as we

  1596. go into a

  1597. new week,

  1598. we thank you

  1599. that if we

  1600. have faith in

  1601. Jesus, we

  1602. know that you

  1603. go with us,

  1604. that you are

  1605. absolutely

  1606. committed to

  1607. our welfare,

  1608. come what

  1609. may.

  1610. And so we

  1611. ask that we

  1612. would trust

  1613. you and

  1614. worship you.

  1615. In Jesus'

  1616. name we

  1617. pray.

  1618. Amen.

  1619. Now we

  1620. will close

  1621. singing from

  1622. Psalm 147,

  1623. the first

  1624. seven verses.

  1625. Let's stand

  1626. to sing.

  1627. tonight.

  1628. Thank you.

  1629. Thank you.

  1630. Thank you.

  1631. Thank you.

  1632. Thank you.
