  1. The scripture reading comes from Philippians chapter 1, starting in verse 18b.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen or your Bible.

  3. Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus

  4. Christ, this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will

  5. not at all be ashamed, but that with full courage, now, as always, Christ will be honored in my body,

  6. whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the

  7. flesh, that means fruitful labor for me, yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard-pressed

  8. between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain

  9. in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and

  10. continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, so that in me you may have ample cause

  11. to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. This is the word of God.

  12. Thank you, Kathy, for reading the passage. Sounds so much better when you read it than when I say it

  13. in my head. Good morning again. My name is Oscar. I'm one of the leaders here at Watermark, and it's

  14. really a privilege to be sharing the message with everyone today. Let me pray for us.

  15. Father God, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, just pray that you have your way over the next 30 or so minutes,

  16. God, that your spirit would help me with clarity of thoughts and speech, that the message would be

  17. clear and concise. And I pray for all of us listening, tuning in, that our hearts would be soft and

  18. accepting of your word, God, and I just pray that it would fall on fertile soil. Help us to see this

  19. incredible Jesus that Paul loved, to see the beauty of Christ so much more clearly. Have your way,

  20. God, today. In Jesus' name. Amen. When I was young, my ambition was to be a professional tennis player.

  21. From the age of 11 years old, I spent probably up to 25 hours a week on the court training, in the gym,

  22. and on weekends playing tennis tournaments. My parents spent an enormous amount of time,

  23. energy, and money on my tennis. I didn't have much of a social life when I was a teenager. In fact,

  24. if you ask me now, what did teenagers do in the 90s? I actually have no idea. I didn't do any of those

  25. things. Our ambition drives us to do many things. Our ambition drives us to work hard, to make sacrifices,

  26. to change our behavior because we think it would benefit us long term. Our ambition pushes us to

  27. persevere in the face of adversity because we have a vision, a goal, or a prize that we are striving

  28. towards. For some of us, maybe our ambition is to make money and retire. Perhaps if you are a university

  29. student, your ambition is to graduate, find a good job, and make a name for yourself in the world.

  30. Or maybe your ambition is to get married and have a family. As we continue our sermon series on the

  31. book of Philippians, in today's passage, we'll look at Paul's ambition. Paul lays out his life school

  32. very clearly. In verse 20, he says, it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not at all be

  33. ashamed, but that with full courage, now as always, Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life

  34. or by death. If Paul had a mission statement, this would be it. This was his reason to exist, that Jesus

  35. Christ would be honored in his body, in life, and in death. The word honored can be translated as

  36. exalted, i.e. lifted high, or magnified, i.e. made big. In a word, Paul's ambition was that the name of

  37. Jesus would be glorified, glorified through him. He deeply desired that all who knew him, from the

  38. disciples that he planted at those churches, to the prison officials who guarded him day and night,

  39. that they would see through Paul a glimpse of the beauty, the kindness, as well as the sovereignty and

  40. majesty of Jesus. And how did Paul go about doing this? How did he glorify the name of Jesus?

  41. Jesus by doing two things, by loving Jesus and by loving those around him. Sounds simple, but if we're

  42. honest, they're both pretty difficult to execute. And so, Christ-centered ambition, if we were to define it,

  43. is to glorify the name of Jesus Christ through loving him and loving others. And this morning, we'll

  44. try to unpack these verses and see what that looks like in Paul's life and in our lives.

  45. Now, if you look again at the end of verse 20, Paul desired that Christ would be honored in my body,

  46. whether by life or by death. And then in verse 21, he follows it up by saying,

  47. for me to live is Christ and to die is gain. In Paul's life, we can pretty easily imagine how he

  48. glorified Jesus. He spent all of his time spreading the gospel. He suffered for the sake of Jesus. And

  49. he did all of this joyfully, not out of guilt or compulsion, but because he had a deep love for his

  50. Lord Jesus. But then he says this interesting thing in verse 21. He says, and to die is gain.

  51. How does dying glorify the name of Jesus? How would he be able to preach the gospel if he died?

  52. Well, let's read on to see what Paul says about his own death. In verse 23, he says, I'm hard pressed

  53. between the two, i.e. living and dying. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far

  54. better. Now, is Paul saying that he desired death because his life of suffering and persecution were

  55. too much to bear and therefore death would be a release? Or is he saying that he desired death

  56. because he believed that in heaven, in paradise, he'd be able to experience all those worldly carnal

  57. pleasures that he gave up to be in ministry for most of his life? Well, of course, Paul is not saying

  58. either of these things. Paul said, to die is gain because in death, he would finally be face to face

  59. with Jesus Christ, the one he loved and the one he adored above everything else he had ever experienced

  60. in the world. Can you sense Paul's deep love, adoration and desire for Jesus?

  61. And so for the Christian, one way that Jesus is glorified is when we love him so much

  62. that we consider death as gain because we gain Christ.

  63. Now, let's not kid ourselves here. This is extremely challenging. I myself have been preparing this

  64. sermon for a little while now and this idea that death is gain is still very difficult for me to swallow

  65. because by definition, in death, we are forced to give up all that we deem as good and valuable,

  66. fun and exciting. Goodbye to all those worldly ambitions. No more retirement, playing golf and tennis

  67. every day. No more beach vacations in Thailand or Vietnam, which I personally love.

  68. Your shoe or watch collection, they will return to dust. No more marriages. No more having children.

  69. But Paul says to die is gain because in heaven, there is something infinitely greater than any of the

  70. greatest experiences or relationships that this world has to offer. So now the question is,

  71. what did Paul see or experience that gave him such an incredible level of conviction in and love for Jesus?

  72. Well, it's because Paul experienced Jesus. He had an intimate relationship with his Lord. He knew Jesus.

  73. Now, I'm sure Paul experienced Jesus in many ways. Let me just highlight two ways. First, he experienced

  74. the grace of Jesus. In your Bible, if you turn back a few books from Philippians to the book of Acts,

  75. in Acts chapter 7, there's a story about the stoning of a man named Stephen who was a disciple of Jesus.

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  76. Paul was there at the stoning of Stephen, but not defending Stephen, but actually persecuting him,

  77. encouraging his murder. Paul was a murderer. By any objective measure before he came to know Jesus,

  78. he was a terrible person. But upon repenting and giving his life to Jesus, he experienced the wonderful

  79. mercy and grace that only Jesus can offer. But Paul only experienced grace because he knew the depths

  80. of his own sin. In 1 Timothy 15, Paul says, Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am

  81. the worst. The Bible's greatest evangelist, the man who wrote a lot of the New Testament, confessed,

  82. I am the worst of sinners. But instead of moping around, feeling depressed and ashamed of his past sins,

  83. Paul lists the eyes of his heart up to the risen Christ. He sees the scars on the hands and feet of Jesus,

  84. and he rejoices knowing that his sins are not only forgiven, they're wiped from the face of the earth.

  85. And not because of anything Paul did, but only because of what our Lord Jesus did on the cross when he gave his life for us.

  86. That is grace, undeserved and unearned. And Paul experienced that.

  87. And second, Paul experienced joy in Jesus. We know from last Sunday's sermon that Jeremy gave,

  88. that Paul wrote Philippians from prison. And it wasn't, it was probably not a white collar,

  89. nice prison with three hot meals a day and a big screen TV. It was probably a dank, dark, disgusting,

  90. rat infested prison. And Paul was on death row throughout his life of ministry. Paul was beaten.

  91. He was stoned. He was persecuted. He suffered tremendously. And yet, look how joyful he was all

  92. the time. It's incredible when I think about it. Nothing, absolutely nothing can depress or bog him down.

  93. If you look at this beginning of the passage in verse 18, Paul starts out with saying,

  94. yes, and I will rejoice. He's rejoicing because the gospel is being preached,

  95. even though some of those doing the preaching are doing so out of selfish ambition.

  96. Now, Paul could have said, hey, let's stop those guys from preaching. Their intention is wrong.

  97. After all, they were probably diluting Paul's own message while he was stuck in jail. But instead,

  98. Paul sees God redeeming a bad situation for good. And for that, he rejoices.

  99. Now, you and I, we can't escape suffering and challenges in this life. When one challenge goes away,

  100. another comes. But what the life of Paul and the entire Bible shows us is that in Christ,

  101. we can experience joy in all seasons. Now, most of us will probably not face the type of suffering that

  102. Paul faced, although some of us might. But we all do suffer and struggle in our own ways, don't we?

  103. For me, this season has been a particularly challenging time for my job and career.

  104. If you didn't know, I don't work at Watermark. I've been working in finance for the past 15 or so years.

  105. And just a few months ago, I was notified by my employer that I've been losing my job.

  106. Now, if I'm honest, when I first got that call, I was pretty upset. I was angry. I was blaming

  107. everything I possibly could. But then after speaking to my wife, Celeste, and praying with her,

  108. and then doing the same with the Watermark elders and a number of other brothers in Christ,

  109. honestly, the sense that I've been feeling in my heart is one of peace and joy.

  110. Sometimes when I tell a friend that I've lost my job, they look at me like,

  111. why aren't you more angry or anxious or upset?

  112. You have three children to feed and educate in Hong Kong. Are you crazy?

  113. Maybe I am crazy. But I can just be honest with you that I feel great.

  114. I feel that God would take care of me because he's able to do immeasurably more than all I could

  115. ever ask or imagine according to the power that is at work within us.

  116. I've lost my place here. I'm sorry.

  117. Excuse me.

  118. When we suffer or lose something like a job or a boyfriend or girlfriend, or when we lose

  119. control of our teenage child, our natural response is to worry. But what the Bible teaches us is to

  120. respond in a very different way by running to Jesus and experiencing his joy. How? By getting on

  121. our knees in prayer. By asking our brothers and sisters in Christ to pray with us, to pray

  122. for us, to intercede with God on our behalf.

  123. Look at Paul. In verse 19, he writes,

  124. through your prayers and the help of the spirit of Jesus Christ,

  125. this, i.e. his time in jail,

  126. will turn out for my deliverance.

  127. Paul was a man of great faith, no doubt, but even Paul knew that

  128. he needed the prayer coverage of the saints and the power of God's spirit to carry him through

  129. his time in prison. I don't think suffering in jail was that easy for Paul. But he knew that joy

  130. doesn't come simply from positive thinking. It can only come, deep joy can only come from the one who

  131. created joy, and that is Jesus Christ.

  132. So, what did Paul experience in Jesus that made him love him so much?

  133. One, he experienced the grace of Jesus,

  134. and two, he experienced joy in Jesus.

  135. And part of Christ-centered ambition

  136. is to glorify the name of Jesus

  137. by loving him through experiencing his grace and joy,

  138. as we've just said.

  139. But it's also through loving our neighbors.

  140. It's both upward to God and outward to those around us.

  141. Although Paul desired to depart and to be with Jesus,

  142. he knew God was calling him to remain in this world for some time,

  143. to love and care for the church,

  144. to love and care for his disciples and anyone else

  145. that he met along the way.

  146. In verse 24,

  147. Paul says,

  148. To remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.

  149. Convinced of this,

  150. I know that I will remain and continue with you all

  151. for your progress and joy in the faith.

  152. Ever said to yourself,

  153. I want to help my spouse,

  154. my CG member,

  155. or my friend have more joy in Jesus?

  156. Ever thought about that?

  157. Well, Paul did.

  158. He was ambitious about spreading joy.

  159. He himself had this deep sense of joy rooted in Christ

  160. and his joy was highly contagious

  161. because he rejoiced in all circumstances,

  162. even in prison.

  163. And that was a great encouragement to the church.

  164. But Paul was also intentional about spreading joy.

  165. And he did this by serving others,

  166. putting their needs above his own.

  167. Paul prayed for the church.

  168. He visited the church.

  169. He wrote them letters.

  170. Paul prayed for the church.

  171. While in jail.

  172. He loved others and wanted those around him

  173. to receive the joy that he experienced.

  174. But loving others is not always convenient.

  175. In the midst of being persecuted in prison,

  176. Paul didn't just look inward at himself,

  177. which he could have.

  178. He was in a tough spot.

  179. Instead, he looked outward at those around him

  180. and said,

  181. God has called me to help you receive the grace and joy

  182. that I have experienced.

  183. Perhaps some of us think that before we can care for a Christian,

  184. before we can share the gospel to our friend,

  185. that we need to have our lives perfectly sorted first,

  186. that we need to have a stable job and income,

  187. or to have sent our kids off to university,

  188. before we have the mental and physical capacity to care for another person.

  189. But Paul is teaching us in this passage actually the exact opposite.

  190. In the midst of suffering,

  191. in the midst of huge uncertainty,

  192. in all seasons,

  193. God is calling us to glorify his name through loving others.

  194. Paul's life was messy.

  195. Our lives are messy.

  196. My life is incredibly messy.

  197. But it's exactly when your life is a mess

  198. that God can use you and I most effectively,

  199. because then it's not our glory,

  200. it's his glory.

  201. Now, I don't mean to pretend that we don't have pain or suffering,

  202. particularly in this time of coronavirus,

  203. what's happening in our city of Hong Kong.

  204. But what I do believe very strongly

  205. is that as we struggle and wrestle through our challenges that we face,

  206. God actually wants to bless us with his joy.

  207. And if we can come to a place

  208. where in the midst of our struggles,

  209. we rejoice in God,

  210. and we can care for somebody else,

  211. man, that is an incredible way

  212. of glorifying in the name of Jesus,

  213. is it not?

  214. But there's also often a cost

  215. when we love others.

  216. Paul said,

  217. my desire is to depart and be with Christ,

  218. for that is far better.

  219. Counterintuitively,

  220. Paul actually preferred death over life

  221. because in death,

  222. he'd be in the presence of his beloved Jesus.

  223. But he submits to God's authority

  224. to remain in the flesh

  225. because he knew that God would be able to bless others through him.

  226. And Paul can freely submit to God's will

  227. for his very existence,

  228. despite the cost to him,

  229. because he saw Jesus as the ultimate example

  230. of one who surrendered.

  231. In Philippians 2,

  232. which we will study next Sunday,

  233. Paul writes that Jesus,

  234. who is equal to the majesty in heaven

  235. in all respects,

  236. he gave up his sovereignty,

  237. becoming just a man.

  238. And if that wasn't enough,

  239. Jesus gave his very life

  240. as he suffered on that cross

  241. for you and I,

  242. the truest,

  243. purest,

  244. ultimate example

  245. of sacrifice

  246. and submission.

  247. And so for us,

  248. at times,

  249. God calls us to love others

  250. despite the risk

  251. and the cost.

  252. I think of my wife,

  253. Celeste.

  254. A few months ago,

  255. she was chatting with her boss

  256. and the topic of faith

  257. and religion

  258. came up.

  259. And Celeste quickly decided

  260. to share her testimony

  261. of how she fell in love

  262. with Jesus.

  263. Now,

  264. was that risky

  265. to share her faith

  266. in her workplace

  267. with her boss?

  268. Possibly.

  269. But was it worth it

  270. to magnify,

  271. to make Jesus known

  272. in her workplace?

  273. Absolutely.

  274. And how about for some of us

  275. who are married?

  276. Sometimes between husband and wife,

  277. when we fight with each other,

  278. there's really no right or wrong.

  279. And yet we get so frustrated

  280. and angry.

  281. How about instead of trying

  282. to rack our brains

  283. to figure out why I'm right

  284. and why my spouse is wrong,

  285. we can actually approach our spouse

  286. and say,

  287. Honey,

  288. I'm sorry.

  289. Sorry I made you upset and angry.

  290. Can you forgive me?

  291. Can we pray together?

  292. How about in our community groups?

  293. There are conflicts

  294. in our community groups,

  295. right,

  296. if we're honest.

  297. But how about

  298. when we have a conflict?

  299. Instead of approaching it

  300. with the mentality of

  301. I'm right and you're wrong,

  302. we can approach it and say,

  303. Hey,

  304. I made some mistakes.

  305. You approach that person,

  306. you say,

  307. Hey,

  308. I've wronged you.

  309. I confess.

  310. Will you forgive me?

  311. You see,

  312. humbling ourselves

  313. and apologizing

  314. is costly

  315. because,

  316. well,

  317. it hurts our pride.

  318. But in Jesus,

  319. we don't apologize

  320. out of fear,

  321. but actually

  322. out of a deep sense

  323. of security,

  324. knowing that Jesus

  325. will honor

  326. our sacrifice

  327. and our humility

  328. because he was the one

  329. who humbled himself

  330. on that cross

  331. to a far greater extent

  332. than we will ever

  333. comprehend.

  334. And when

  335. we share the gospel

  336. with someone

  337. despite the risk,

  338. and when

  339. we apologize

  340. and reconcile

  341. despite the cost,

  342. when we encourage,

  343. care for,

  344. and pray for someone

  345. and help them see

  346. the beauty of Jesus

  347. despite the inconvenience,

  348. but help them see

  349. the joy

  350. that you have

  351. and receive joy,

  352. man,

  353. we actually ourselves

  354. experience joy

  355. in Jesus.

  356. We help someone

  357. receive joy

  358. and then we receive joy

  359. in return.

  360. this is how

  361. the ecosystem

  362. of the gospel works.

  363. So now we've seen

  364. how Christ-centered ambition

  365. is to glorify

  366. the name of Jesus Christ

  367. through loving him

  368. and loving other people.

  369. But what about

  370. our other ambitions?

  371. Can Christ-centered ambition

  372. coexist

  373. with my other ambitions

  374. such as

  375. having a good career

  376. or raising a family?

  377. Well,

  378. it's really a matter

  379. of priorities.

  380. At work

  381. is our sole

  382. and most important

  383. ambition

  384. to make money

  385. or

  386. can we work hard

  387. because

  388. we honor God

  389. with our work

  390. but our priority,

  391. what is most important

  392. to us

  393. is that at work

  394. we build meaningful

  395. relationships

  396. such that we can

  397. ultimately

  398. share the gospel

  399. with our colleagues.

  400. And with our kids

  401. is our main ambition

  402. for them to

  403. get good grades

  404. and to go

  405. to a good university

  406. to find a name

  407. for themselves

  408. in the world.

  409. Or is the beauty

  410. of Jesus

  411. so precious

  412. to us

  413. as parents

  414. that above all

  415. we prioritize

  416. our children's

  417. spiritual life

  418. over their

  419. academic life

  420. by actually

  421. spending time

  422. teaching them

  423. about the love

  424. of Jesus.

  425. Or in relationships,

  426. do we only

  427. build relationships

  428. that can benefit us?

  429. Or do we

  430. prayerfully

  431. and intentionally

  432. look to

  433. invest in

  434. relationships

  435. through hospitality

  436. or discipleship

  437. or through

  438. sharing the gospel?

  439. God calls us,

  440. God calls us,

  441. Watermark,

  442. to be a people

  443. who put the gospel

  444. ambition

  445. above our own ambition

  446. because Jesus

  447. is the prize

  448. that we strive

  449. towards

  450. and glorifying

  451. him

  452. is our goal.

  453. because at the

  454. end of the day,

  455. worldly ambition,

  456. stuff that we

  457. are striving for

  458. every day,

  459. it will never

  460. satisfy us

  461. like Jesus can.

  462. Look at Paul.

  463. I imagine that

  464. he was a pretty

  465. ambitious guy.

  466. Prior to meeting

  467. Jesus,

  468. he was moving up

  469. that religious ladder

  470. pretty quickly.

  471. But after meeting

  472. Christ,

  473. Paul said,

  474. whatever was

  475. to my profit,

  476. I now consider

  477. loss,

  478. nothing

  479. for the sake

  480. of Christ.

  481. What happened?

  482. He experienced

  483. Jesus.

  484. He met Jesus,

  485. he experienced

  486. Jesus and soon

  487. realized his

  488. worldly ambitions

  489. would never

  490. satisfy him

  491. like Jesus

  492. could.

  493. And I think

  494. if we're honest,

  495. most of us

  496. would say the

  497. same thing.

  498. If our ambition

  499. is to make

  500. money,

  501. to make a lot

  502. of money,

  503. once we get

  504. to that number

  505. we think will

  506. make us happy,

  507. it never does.

  508. We always

  509. want more.

  510. If our ambition

  511. is to set up

  512. our lives

  513. to have as much

  514. comfort and

  515. pleasure as we

  516. possibly can,

  517. we'll never get

  518. there because

  519. there are always

  520. diminishing returns

  521. in worldly

  522. pleasure.

  523. Once you eat

  524. at a one

  525. Michelin star

  526. restaurant,

  527. you go to

  528. the two

  529. Michelin star

  530. and then the

  531. three.

  532. Pretty soon

  533. you'll have to

  534. make ten

  535. Michelin star

  536. restaurants and

  537. even those

  538. will never

  539. satisfy the

  540. most experienced

  541. palate.

  542. because as

  543. C.S.

  544. Lewis famously

  545. said,

  546. if we find

  547. ourselves with

  548. a desire that

  549. nothing in this

  550. world can

  551. satisfy,

  552. the most

  553. probable

  554. explanation is

  555. that we were

  556. made for

  557. another world.

  558. No ambition

  559. in this world

  560. can truly

  561. satisfy our

  562. souls except

  563. the creator

  564. himself,

  565. Jesus Christ.

  566. the world

  567. will say to

  568. you,

  569. be ambitious,

  570. prove yourself

  571. to me,

  572. accomplish more,

  573. look better,

  574. and then I

  575. will love

  576. you.

  577. What does

  578. Jesus say?

  579. Jesus says,

  580. you have nothing

  581. to prove to

  582. me,

  583. I already

  584. know you,

  585. I forged

  586. you in your

  587. mother's womb,

  588. I know you

  589. better than

  590. anyone else

  591. does,

  592. and I love

  593. you.

  594. The world

  595. says have

  596. goals,

  597. work harder,

  598. do more,

  599. sacrifice,

  600. and then

  601. you'll be

  602. happy.

  603. Jesus says,

  604. come to

  605. me,

  606. all those

  607. who are

  608. burdened,

  609. burnt out,

  610. worried and

  611. anxious about

  612. their future

  613. because of all

  614. this uncertainty,

  615. and Jesus

  616. says,

  617. come to

  618. me,

  619. and in

  620. me you

  621. will find

  622. rest,

  623. and peace,

  624. and joy,

  625. and everlasting

  626. satisfaction.

  627. You and I

  628. were created

  629. to know

  630. this Jesus.

  631. We were

  632. created to

  633. experience

  634. Jesus,

  635. to experience

  636. the joy

  637. and grace

  638. of Jesus.

  639. But to

  640. know Jesus

  641. and to

  642. experience

  643. him,

  644. we must

  645. prioritize

  646. him in

  647. our lives.

  648. When I

  649. played

  650. tennis,

  651. I missed

  652. so many

  653. school events

  654. because I

  655. was off

  656. playing a

  657. tennis

  658. tournament.

  659. In fact,

  660. I even

  661. missed my

  662. college

  663. graduation

  664. ceremony.

  665. But I

  666. believed it

  667. was totally

  668. worth it

  669. because I

  670. love

  671. tennis.

  672. I put

  673. it above

  674. most

  675. things in

  676. my

  677. life.

  678. In the

  679. same way,

  680. if we

  681. want to

  682. experience

  683. Jesus,

  684. if we

  685. want to

  686. experience

  687. his grace

  688. and joy

  689. and satisfaction

  690. in him,

  691. we need to

  692. prioritize him

  693. in our

  694. lives.

  695. Our love

  696. for Jesus

  697. grows day

  698. by day

  699. as we

  700. meditate on

  701. his word,

  702. as we

  703. pray and

  704. fast,

  705. as we

  706. spend time

  707. sharing our

  708. lives with

  709. our

  710. community.

  711. In

  712. tennis,

  713. it took

  714. me years

  715. and hitting

  716. thousands

  717. of tennis

  718. balls before

  719. I was good

  720. enough to

  721. play in

  722. university.

  723. And in

  724. our faith,

  725. it does

  726. take time

  727. as well.

  728. And every

  729. time we

  730. experience a

  731. little bit

  732. of the joy

  733. of Christ,

  734. a little bit

  735. of the grace

  736. of Christ,

  737. every time we

  738. wake up and

  739. we pray and

  740. we're satisfied

  741. in him,

  742. it's like we

  743. put a brick

  744. down and

  745. then brick

  746. by brick

  747. by brick

  748. until those

  749. bricks become

  750. a tower.

  751. And that is

  752. how our

  753. love for

  754. our beloved

  755. Jesus grows,

  756. but we

  757. must prioritize

  758. him.

  759. Let me

  760. close here.

  761. The world

  762. is constantly

  763. telling us

  764. to be

  765. ambitious

  766. for

  767. ourselves,

  768. to glorify

  769. ourselves,

  770. but that is

  771. the way to

  772. lose everything

  773. both in

  774. this life

  775. and the

  776. next.

  777. As this

  778. passage from

  779. Philippians

  780. teaches us,

  781. Christ-centered

  782. ambition is to

  783. glorify the

  784. great name

  785. of Jesus

  786. Christ above

  787. all things

  788. through loving

  789. him and

  790. through loving

  791. those, loving

  792. people around

  793. us.

  794. It's the greatest

  795. commandment to

  796. love the Lord

  797. your God with

  798. all your heart,

  799. soul, mind,

  800. and strength,

  801. and to love our

  802. neighbors as

  803. ourselves.

  804. And as we

  805. prioritize Jesus

  806. in our lives,

  807. we experience him

  808. more and we

  809. grow to love

  810. him more.

  811. We experience

  812. more of his

  813. grace and

  814. joy and

  815. become more

  816. satisfied in

  817. him and less

  818. satisfied in

  819. the stuff of

  820. the world.

  821. And as his

  822. love sinks

  823. deeper into

  824. our hearts,

  825. like Paul,

  826. we are compelled

  827. to love those

  828. around us.

  829. It'll be

  830. inconvenient,

  831. it'll be risky

  832. and costly

  833. at times,

  834. but for the

  835. glory of the

  836. name of Jesus,

  837. it'll be worth

  838. it.

  839. Watermark,

  840. may our

  841. greatest ambition

  842. be to glorify

  843. the name of

  844. Jesus Christ

  845. in our city

  846. and in our

  847. world.

  848. Let's pray.

  849. Father,

  850. Jesus,

  851. Holy Spirit,

  852. thank you for

  853. your word,

  854. which is so

  855. powerful.

  856. It changes

  857. hearts,

  858. it impacts

  859. lives,

  860. it turns

  861. dead people

  862. into life,

  863. sleepy Christians

  864. to those that

  865. are alive and

  866. on fire for

  867. you.

  868. God,

  869. as we

  870. continue to

  871. meditate on

  872. your word,

  873. not what I've

  874. said,

  875. but your word,

  876. Father,

  877. your Holy

  878. Scripture,

  879. I pray,

  880. God,

  881. that you

  882. would do

  883. an amazing

  884. work in

  885. us,

  886. Father.

  887. Help us

  888. to love

  889. Jesus,

  890. to see him,

  891. God,

  892. as Paul did,

  893. to love

  894. Jesus with

  895. an undying

  896. love,

  897. Father,

  898. and to

  899. experience

  900. joy in

  901. him,

  902. to experience

  903. more of

  904. his grace,

  905. to be more

  906. satisfied in

  907. him,

  908. such that

  909. the stuff

  910. that we're

  911. pursuing in

  912. this world,

  913. all our

  914. worldly ambitions

  915. would fade

  916. away,

  917. God.

  918. Come,

  919. Lord Jesus,

  920. help us,

  921. Father.

  922. And I pray,

  923. God,

  924. as that happens

  925. in our lives,

  926. Lord,

  927. we'd be a

  928. church that

  929. would sacrificially

  930. love others,

  931. God,

  932. despite the

  933. cost,

  934. the risk,

  935. the inconvenience,

  936. and all those

  937. things.

  938. Help us,

  939. God,

  940. to do so,

  941. not because

  942. we feel

  943. guilty,

  944. but because

  945. we love

  946. you so much,

  947. we want

  948. this good

  949. news to

  950. reach everyone,

  951. God,

  952. that we know,

  953. Father.

  954. Lord,

  955. may you be

  956. glorified in

  957. our city,

  958. in our world.

  959. We love

  960. you.

  961. Pray this in

  962. your name.

  963. Amen.

  964. Amen.
