  1. So we're going to begin this new series thinking about the doctrine of Scripture.

  2. Let me begin with a question for us.

  3. Does what I believe about the Bible matter?

  4. Does what you believe about the Bible matter?

  5. Well, hopefully by the time we come to the end, we'll be clearer on that answer.

  6. But as people, we understand that we are people who think.

  7. We recognize, too, that the way that we think tends to shape our actions.

  8. How we think, our worldview tends to shape how we respond to our circumstances.

  9. And in our thoughts, we process and make sense of life past, present, and future.

  10. So then the question becomes, what place does the Bible, what place will the Bible have in shaping those thoughts?

  11. And the answer to that question will depend on a number of different factors.

  12. When we pick up our Bibles, do we pick it up believing it has authority or not?

  13. Do we believe that it is revelation from God or not?

  14. Do we believe all of it is revelation from God or not?

  15. Do we consider it to be reliable and without error or not?

  16. Does this book contain a guide for all that we need for a life of faith?

  17. Can it guide us to live to the glory of God in our families, in our workplaces?

  18. How we think about our money when we think about eternity?

  19. Perhaps to put it another way, and I've been thinking about this a lot this week,

  20. imagine if you never had the Bible.

  21. You never had a chance to hear its truth.

  22. You never had a chance to read it for yourself.

  23. How different would your life be?

  24. How different would your view of the world and your life be

  25. without the Bible informing your thoughts and shaping your worldview?

  26. Of course, that's a reality for hundreds of millions of people today.

  27. That's a reality for thousands of people groups today.

  28. And so part of this is connected to our desire to be a church that cares about mission

  29. because people need to hear the Bible as our fundamental conviction.

  30. I always liked what Spurgeon used to say, his desire for his church,

  31. that if the people of God were cut open, that they would bleed Bible,

  32. that we would absorb it, that it would shape our lives.

  33. It would help us to respond to circumstances, help us to know how to live.

  34. So our plan for this evening is going to be built around those texts that we read

  35. at the beginning, sharing the convictions of Peter,

  36. who believed that the writers of Scripture were carried along by the Spirit,

  37. that the whole Bible was superintended by the Spirit,

  38. so there's no error within it.

  39. Following the conviction of Paul, that the whole Bible is God-breathed,

  40. that the Word of God is God's Word, that it's inspired.

  41. And following the conviction of Jesus,

  42. who said heaven and earth will pass away, but my Word will never pass away,

  43. so God's Word is permanent and unbreakable.

  44. So having those as our sort of bedrock convictions as we continue to think,

  45. we're going to briefly see four qualities of Scripture,

  46. and then identify five reasons we need the Bible for everyday life.

  47. So we're going to cover a lot of Bible texts.

  48. I would suggest that some of these would be well worth noting,

  49. and perhaps returning to,

  50. but we will touch on each of these.

  51. The first quality of God's Word we're going to think about is sufficiency.

  52. This is the idea that God's Word is enough.

  53. So let's read from the book of Hebrews to see it.

  54. All the texts will be up on our screens,

  55. but we're in Hebrews 1, verses 1 to 4,

    Hebrews 1:1–4

  56. in our first text.

  57. In the past, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,

  58. but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son,

  59. whom he appointed heir of all things,

  60. and through whom also he made the universe.

  61. The Son is the radiance of God's glory

  62. and the exact representation of his being,

  63. sustaining all things by his powerful Word.

  64. After he had provided purification for sins,

  65. he sat down at the right hand of the majesty in heaven.

  66. So he became as much superior to the angels

  67. as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

  68. So the book of Hebrews begins with this contrast.

  69. In the past, God spoke to your ancestors,

  70. people in the Old Testament era,

  71. through the prophets,

  72. throughout time,

  73. in many times and in various ways.

  74. Sometimes speaking by a vision,

  75. sometimes speaking by a burning bush,

  76. a whole variety of ways that God spoke.

  77. But then he says,

  78. in these last days,

  79. speaking here of the final age of salvation,

  80. speaking of everyone living in between the first and the second comings of the Lord Jesus,

  81. so speaking of our day,

  82. how has God spoken?

  83. God has spoken through his Son.

  84. And who is his Son?

  85. Hebrews 1, 1-4 gives us a catalogue of qualities about Jesus.

  86. Jesus has been,

  87. verse 2,

  88. appointed the heir of all things.

  89. It is through Jesus that God made the universe.

  90. God is,

  91. Jesus is the agent of creation.

  92. The Son is the radiance of God's glory.

  93. To read about Jesus in the Gospels

  94. is to be confronted with the glory of God.

  95. Jesus is the one who is sustaining all things

  96. by his powerful word.

  97. Jesus is the one who has provided purification for sin.

  98. Jesus has come as that sacrifice,

  99. as the Savior,

  100. as our substitute,

  101. and now he sits at the right hand of the majesty in heaven,

  102. enthroned as King of kings and Lord of lords.

  103. And he is superior to the angels.

  104. He's superior to Moses.

  105. He is better than anyone and anything,

  106. as the book of Hebrews makes plain.

  107. And the conclusion there,

  108. when we think about Jesus being superior,

  109. the point is that Jesus is,

  110. for us,

  111. the final agent from God

  112. in terms of revelation and redemption.

  113. God has spoken through Jesus.

  114. No further word needs to be said.

  115. God has saved through Jesus.

  116. No further salvation need be expected.

  117. So the big idea here is that God's word contains all we need

  118. for salvation and godly living.

  119. The Bible is sufficient.

  120. God's word is enough.

  121. Jesus is the climax of revelation

  122. and redemption.

  123. We're not waiting for some fresh word.

  124. We don't need later books.

  125. We don't need to listen to anyone claiming fresh words of prophecy.

  126. Rather, we're invited to have confidence

  127. that in Jesus and in the gospel,

  128. I have all I need to know about God,

  129. all I need to know about salvation,

  130. all I need to know for a life of godliness.

  131. It's here in the Bible.

  132. It's sufficient.

  133. It's enough.

  134. J.I. Packer put it this way.

  135. He said,

  136. There are no words of God spoken to us at all

  137. except the words of Scripture.

  138. So first plank in the doctrine of the Bible

  139. is the sufficiency of Scripture.

  140. Second up, clarity.

  141. The idea that God's word is clear.

  142. Now this time we're going to go Old Testament.

  143. We're going to go to the book of Deuteronomy.

  144. Deuteronomy chapter 30.

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  145. Deuteronomy 30 from verse 11 to verse 14.

  146. Now, this is God speaking through Moses

  147. to the redeemed people of God.

  148. Now what I am commanding you today

  149. is not too difficult for you

  150. or beyond your reach.

  151. It is not up in heaven

  152. so that you have to ask

  153. who will ascend into heaven to get it

  154. and proclaim it to us

  155. so that we may obey it.

  156. Nor is it beyond the sea

  157. so that you have to ask

  158. who will cross the sea to get it

  159. and proclaim it to us

  160. so that we may obey it.

  161. No.

  162. The word is very near you.

  163. It is in your mouth

  164. and in your heart

  165. so that you may obey it.

  166. So the big idea that the Bible says about itself

  167. is that the central message of the Bible

  168. is plainly taught

  169. so that it can be understood

  170. by all with ears to hear.

  171. And especially for us in the era

  172. in which we live,

  173. the central saving message of Jesus

  174. is plainly taught

  175. so it can be understood

  176. by all who are ready to hear.

  177. So this text was spoken by Moses

  178. to the redeemed people of God.

  179. They've been set free from slavery in Egypt.

  180. They've been brought to Mount Sinai.

  181. They've entered into covenant relationship with God.

  182. And now as he gives them his command,

  183. as there's this covenant renewal going on,

  184. his point is that God's word of command is clear.

  185. It is not complicated.

  186. It is understandable.

  187. It is able to be obeyed.

  188. God is kind to them.

  189. He doesn't intend to frustrate them

  190. by hiding the truth from them.

  191. He's not hidden up in heaven.

  192. He's not hidden it in the depths.

  193. No.

  194. It's there.

  195. It's close by them.

  196. And that fits with

  197. what Moses said to the people of God

  198. that they were to pass the law on to their children.

  199. The central message of the Bible

  200. is clear enough for children to understand.

  201. For us today,

  202. the central saving message of the Bible

  203. that God doesn't save us because of our works,

  204. because of our goodness,

  205. but saves us by his grace,

  206. that's clear.

  207. That we don't save ourselves,

  208. but that we are saved by the Lord Jesus,

  209. who lives a life of perfect obedience in our place,

  210. who dies on the cross as a sacrifice

  211. or a universal substitute

  212. to take the penalty for our sin

  213. and to give us forgiveness in eternal life.

  214. That is clear in the Word of God.

  215. The clarity of Scripture says that

  216. the essential points of truth

  217. that we need to know and believe and do

  218. are clearly seen in the Word of God.

  219. Now, there are, of course,

  220. some qualifiers that we need to consider,

  221. as is true with any subject

  222. that we look to study,

  223. with any person that we want to get to know,

  224. there is a level of work and effort involved

  225. to get to know that person,

  226. that truth, better.

  227. So, to say that Scripture is clear

  228. doesn't mean that we don't need to study

  229. to understand more of God and His Word.

  230. And it is also true to say,

  231. and Peter said it of Paul's writing,

  232. that not all parts of the Bible

  233. are equally clear.

  234. What is essential is very clear,

  235. but not all parts are equally clear.

  236. And perhaps two principles

  237. beyond having to sort of work hard

  238. and try and study.

  239. One that requires us to be humble

  240. and to be asking the Spirit to help us

  241. and to guide us in our thoughts,

  242. in our understanding.

  243. But also, at a practical level,

  244. we want to use what is clear and basic

  245. to help understand the complex.

  246. Sometimes groups of Christians or churches

  247. can go wrong because they pick an obscure text

  248. and try and build a whole theology

  249. around one passage.

  250. It's really hard to understand

  251. when there's a lot more basic verses

  252. that would help to clarify.

  253. So, we use the clear help us

  254. towards understanding the more complex.

  255. But just as was the case

  256. for the people in the days of Moses,

  257. when we think about our view

  258. on the clarity of the Bible,

  259. is the Bible clear?

  260. It's connected, in a sense,

  261. to our view of God's character.

  262. Do I believe God is able to speak clearly?

  263. Do I believe that God is wise enough

  264. to get down to our level

  265. to speak so that we can understand

  266. the central message of the Bible?

  267. Calvin used to talk about God

  268. baby-talking to us.

  269. Is God's word for all?

  270. Or do we think he's made it so complicated

  271. that it's just for professionals

  272. who go to ETS or somewhere like that?

  273. When we understand the character of God,

  274. then we understand that he wants to speak to us.

  275. He wants us to be clear on salvation.

  276. Wayne Grudem, I think, puts it well.

  277. He says,

  278. The Bible is written in such a way

  279. that its teachings are able to be understood

  280. by all who read it,

  281. seeking God's help,

  282. there's humility,

  283. and being willing to follow it.

  284. So, that's clarity.

  285. The next plank

  286. in our thinking about the doctrine of Scripture

  287. is the idea of authority.

  288. And for here,

  289. we're going to turn to the book of Acts.

  290. Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  291. Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  292. which is famous for Paul's sermon in Athens,

  293. but we're going before that

  294. to what happens in Berea.

  295. And the idea of authority

  296. is the idea that God's word is final.

  297. That God's word gets the last word

  298. in every topic it addresses.

  299. So, Acts 17,

  300. beginning at verse 10.

  301. As soon as it was night,

  302. the believers sent Paul and Silas

  303. away to Berea.

  304. On arriving there,

  305. they went to the Jewish synagogue.

  306. Now, the Berean Jews

  307. were of more noble character

  308. than those in Thessalonica,

  309. for they received the message

  310. with great eagerness

  311. and examined the Scriptures

  312. every day

  313. to see if what Paul said

  314. was true.

  315. As a result,

  316. many of them believed,

  317. as did also a number

  318. of prominent Greek women

  319. and many Greek men.

  320. But,

  321. when the Jews in Thessalonica

  322. learned that Paul

  323. was preaching the word of God

  324. at Berea,

  325. some of them went there too,

  326. agitating the crowds

  327. and stirring them up.

  328. If you have time to read

  329. the first half of Acts 17,

  330. you'll discover

  331. it's the story of two cities.

  332. And more than that,

  333. it's the story of two different

  334. responses to the word of God.

  335. In Thessalonica,

  336. as Paul preaches

  337. that Christ is king,

  338. as he brings the message

  339. of Jesus Christ

  340. and him crucified,

  341. the Jews in particular

  342. are rejecting that message.

  343. And what we have

  344. is this mob mentality

  345. that's established

  346. and where they're rioting

  347. against the truth.

  348. So, Paul leaves there

  349. with Silas and some others

  350. and they arrive in Berea.

  351. And in Berea,

  352. it couldn't be any more different.

  353. Did you notice

  354. how they acted?

  355. Verse 11,

  356. they received the message

  357. with great eagerness

  358. and examined the Scriptures

  359. every day

  360. to see if what Paul said

  361. was true.

  362. So, they have the Old Testament

  363. in front of them

  364. and they're listening

  365. to Paul's Gospel

  366. and they're listening

  367. and they're checking

  368. against Scripture

  369. and they're wondering,

  370. is what Paul says

  371. in line with

  372. the promises

  373. and the prophecies

  374. that we find

  375. in the Old Testament

  376. about what Messiah

  377. would be like,

  378. about who he is

  379. and how he would suffer

  380. and how he would die

  381. and how he would rise.

  382. So, they test Paul's Gospel

  383. and when they recognize

  384. it's in line with Scripture,

  385. they believe.

  386. Many of them believe.

  387. Because they believe

  388. the authority

  389. of God's Word.

  390. and so they believe

  391. the authority

  392. of Paul's Gospel too.

  393. Their mindset

  394. as they hear

  395. this new message

  396. is that if Scripture

  397. says it,

  398. we will believe it.

  399. Others may write

  400. about it,

  401. but we're going to trust it.

  402. And their attitude

  403. is wonderful

  404. because it's also

  405. very much,

  406. show us from the Bible.

  407. It's not based

  408. on Paul's reputation.

  409. It's not based

  410. on his ability

  411. to argue.

  412. Show us from the Bible.

  413. That's a wonderful attitude

  414. for any church,

  415. any Christian

  416. to have.

  417. When we think

  418. about the question

  419. of authority,

  420. we understand

  421. that every religious group,

  422. every system of belief,

  423. every belief

  424. that we have

  425. individually

  426. will always rest

  427. on a particular

  428. authority

  429. in the sense

  430. that someone

  431. or something

  432. will always

  433. have the last word.

  434. How am I going

  435. to react

  436. in this situation?

  437. How am I going

  438. to deal

  439. with this circumstance?

  440. There will be

  441. something

  442. that we will look

  443. to to guide us.

  444. If that's not

  445. the Bible,

  446. that can be

  447. any number.

  448. That could be

  449. a scientific community.

  450. It could be

  451. contemporary culture.

  452. It could be

  453. what our parents

  454. taught us,

  455. what our peer group

  456. believes.

  457. It could be

  458. the teaching

  459. of some

  460. influential figure

  461. or a teacher

  462. in our life

  463. or online.

  464. Something will

  465. always have

  466. the last word.

  467. The doctrine

  468. of scripture

  469. says,

  470. for the people

  471. of God,

  472. for the church,

  473. it should always

  474. be the word

  475. of God.

  476. One place

  477. where we might

  478. find that this

  479. particular aspect

  480. becomes important

  481. is if you're

  482. ever in conversation

  483. and someone

  484. asks the question,

  485. well,

  486. what about

  487. mistakes in

  488. the Bible?

  489. What about

  490. perceived errors

  491. in the Bible

  492. where one part

  493. is seen to

  494. disagree with

  495. the other?

  496. How do we

  497. respond to

  498. that?

  499. Well,

  500. as Christians,

  501. our first

  502. instinct should

  503. be to trust

  504. the authority

  505. of God's

  506. inspired word.

  507. That's why we

  508. need this solid

  509. foundation of

  510. the doctrine

  511. of scripture.

  512. So we're not

  513. going to be

  514. shaken

  515. when somebody

  516. comes with

  517. those kind

  518. of questions.

  519. We also

  520. have to have

  521. an attitude,

  522. a posture

  523. of humility

  524. because some

  525. of those

  526. perceived

  527. difficulties

  528. between

  529. passage of

  530. the Bible

  531. or perceived

  532. errors

  533. are easy

  534. to resolve.

  535. A little bit

  536. of reading

  537. and you can

  538. resolve those.

  539. Others will

  540. require hard

  541. work and

  542. others,

  543. particular

  544. questions,

  545. questions we

  546. might have

  547. about the

  548. word of

  549. God.

  550. We may

  551. wrestle

  552. with for

  553. years and

  554. we may

  555. never come

  556. to resolution

  557. but will

  558. we have

  559. that humility

  560. and that

  561. trust in

  562. the authority

  563. of God's

  564. word as

  565. our foundation?

  566. I came

  567. across this

  568. from G.I.

  569. Packer which

  570. I find

  571. helpful.

  572. He said

  573. our intellectual

  574. competence is

  575. not the test

  576. and measure

  577. of divine

  578. truth.

  579. That's good

  580. news for us

  581. as Christians.

  582. measure is

  583. God's word.

  584. The last

  585. plank in

  586. this

  587. consideration

  588. of the

  589. doctrine of

  590. scripture is

  591. that God's

  592. word is

  593. necessary,

  594. the necessity

  595. of scripture.

  596. We're just

  597. going to go

  598. one book

  599. forward.

  600. We're going

  601. to go to

  602. the book

  603. of Romans

  604. here.

  605. The necessity

  606. of scripture,

  607. the idea

  608. here is that

  609. we need

  610. more than

  611. the created

  612. world if we

  613. are to know

  614. God in a

  615. saving way.

  616. We need the

  617. Bible to

  618. tell us

  619. who Jesus

  620. is,

  621. how we

  622. are to

  623. be saved,

  624. and how

  625. to live.

  626. So,

  627. chapter 1

  628. verses 16

  629. to 20

  630. where we

  631. read,

  632. For I

  633. am not

  634. ashamed of

  635. the gospel

  636. because it

  637. is the

  638. power of

  639. God that

  640. brings salvation

  641. to everyone

  642. who believes,

  643. first to

  644. the Jew,

  645. then to

  646. the Gentile.

  647. For in

  648. the gospel

  649. the righteousness

  650. of God

  651. is revealed,

  652. a righteousness

  653. that is by

  654. faith from

  655. first to

  656. last,

  657. just as it

  658. is written,

  659. the righteous

  660. will live by

  661. faith.

  662. The wrath

  663. of God

  664. is being

  665. revealed from

  666. heaven against

  667. all the

  668. godlessness

  669. and wickedness

  670. of people

  671. who suppress

  672. the truth

  673. by their

  674. wickedness,

  675. since what

  676. may be known

  677. about God

  678. is plain to

  679. them,

  680. because God

  681. has made it

  682. plain to

  683. them.

  684. For since

  685. the creation

  686. of the

  687. world,

  688. God's

  689. invisible

  690. qualities,

  691. his eternal

  692. power and

  693. divine nature

  694. have been

  695. clearly seen,

  696. being understood

  697. from what

  698. has been

  699. made,

  700. so that

  701. people are

  702. without

  703. excuse.

  704. So the

  705. word there

  706. in verse

  707. 18,

  708. there are

  709. those who

  710. suppress

  711. the truth.

  712. God

  713. is

  714. so

  715. what

  716. Paul

  717. is

  718. saying

  719. is

  720. that

  721. God

  722. has

  723. so

  724. created

  725. the

  726. world

  727. that

  728. his

  729. qualities,

  730. his glory,

  731. his power,

  732. his

  733. godness

  734. are

  735. clearly

  736. on show,

  737. but the

  738. wickedness of

  739. human hearts

  740. leads to

  741. that being

  742. suppressed.

  743. God

  744. says in

  745. his word,

  746. if we

  747. open our

  748. windows and

  749. open our

  750. eyes,

  751. we're being

  752. confronted with

  753. the glory of

  754. God day by

  755. day by

  756. day,

  757. whether we're

  758. looking in a

  759. telescope or

  760. looking in a

  761. microscope,

  762. we're seeing

  763. the glory of

  764. God in

  765. view,

  766. but it's a

  767. truth that

  768. people want

  769. to suppress.

  770. It's where

  771. the talk of

  772. intelligent design

  773. becomes a

  774. really awkward

  775. one in

  776. classrooms,

  777. a reality

  778. that's often

  779. ignored.

  780. But even

  781. then,

  782. even if

  783. our eyes

  784. were open

  785. and we

  786. looked out

  787. our window

  788. and we

  789. saw the

  790. glory of

  791. God and

  792. we recognized

  793. there was a

  794. creator,

  795. there was an

  796. intelligent design

  797. behind it

  798. all,

  799. that would

  800. not be

  801. enough

  802. for us

  803. to be

  804. saved.

  805. That's why

  806. the Bible

  807. is necessary.

  808. There is

  809. limits to

  810. what we can

  811. learn about

  812. God from

  813. creation.

  814. It can't

  815. tell us

  816. about sin.

  817. It can't

  818. tell us

  819. about salvation.

  820. it can't

  821. tell us

  822. about the

  823. person and

  824. work of

  825. Jesus.

  826. It can

  827. tell us

  828. that there

  829. is a

  830. God,

  831. but we

  832. need to

  833. know God's

  834. word in

  835. order to

  836. know salvation.

  837. Verse 16

  838. is how God

  839. has responded

  840. to that need

  841. because he has

  842. given us

  843. the gospel,

  844. the power of

  845. God that brings

  846. salvation to

  847. everyone who

  848. believes.

  849. That in

  850. God's word

  851. and in the

  852. word of the

  853. gospel,

  854. this gift of

  855. a righteousness

  856. credited to

  857. us by

  858. faith is

  859. made plain.

  860. The way of

  861. salvation through

  862. faith in

  863. Jesus is

  864. made plain.

  865. There was an

  866. article just

  867. this week by a

  868. chap called

  869. Brian Tabb

  870. who was

  871. saying that

  872. Jesus is

  873. like a

  874. great optician

  875. because what

  876. Jesus did

  877. with the

  878. disciples,

  879. he was

  880. focusing on

  881. the Emmaus

  882. road,

  883. Luke 24,

  884. but you can

  885. think more

  886. widely as he's

  887. helping his

  888. disciples with

  889. their focus.

  890. All the time

  891. he's wanting

  892. them to see

  893. his identity

  894. and his

  895. saving purpose.

  896. And that's

  897. still Jesus'

  898. desire for us

  899. today that we

  900. would see and

  901. know that at

  902. the center of

  903. the Bible,

  904. at the center

  905. of God's

  906. plan for

  907. history and

  908. for the

  909. nations,

  910. is Jesus,

  911. the only

  912. Savior for

  913. sinners.

  914. God's word is

  915. necessary because

  916. if we didn't

  917. have the Bible

  918. and we wanted

  919. to know about

  920. God, what

  921. would we be

  922. left with?

  923. We'd be left

  924. with vague

  925. spirituality.

  926. We'd be looking

  927. for answers,

  928. but we wouldn't

  929. find the answers

  930. until we find

  931. the word of

  932. God.

  933. Perhaps we,

  934. well, I think

  935. God is like

  936. this.

  937. I hope God

  938. will accept

  939. me because

  940. I'm like

  941. this, but

  942. we'd have

  943. no certainty,

  944. no sure

  945. knowledge.

  946. And so

  947. Kevin DeYoung

  948. says we

  949. need the

  950. revelation of

  951. God to

  952. know God.

  953. And the

  954. only sure,

  955. saving,

  956. final,

  957. perfect

  958. revelation of

  959. God is

  960. found in

  961. Scripture.

  962. That's the

  963. doctrine of

  964. Scripture,

  965. very briefly.

  966. It is

  967. sufficient,

  968. it is

  969. clear,

  970. it has

  971. authority,

  972. and it is

  973. necessary.

  974. Now let's

  975. pause for a

  976. moment.

  977. We've still

  978. got a little

  979. bit of work

  980. to do.

  981. But as we're

  982. catching our

  983. breath,

  984. let's ask the

  985. question,

  986. if that

  987. is true,

  988. what now?

  989. If that

  990. is true,

  991. what does

  992. that mean for

  993. my attitude

  994. to making

  995. time to

  996. read the

  997. Bible,

  998. to coming

  999. to church

  1000. and to

  1001. being under

  1002. God's

  1003. Word?

  1004. If that's

  1005. true,

  1006. if it's

  1007. sufficient and

  1008. clear and

  1009. has authority

  1010. as necessary,

  1011. shouldn't we

  1012. treasure it

  1013. as the

  1014. people of

  1015. God?

  1016. Shouldn't

  1017. we come to

  1018. depend on

  1019. it?

  1020. Shouldn't

  1021. we be

  1022. committing to

  1023. reading it

  1024. and to

  1025. giving it

  1026. first place?

  1027. Shouldn't

  1028. we want to

  1029. learn how

  1030. to apply

  1031. its truth

  1032. to our

  1033. life and

  1034. to all

  1035. of life

  1036. and to

  1037. the lives

  1038. of others?

  1039. Shouldn't

  1040. we want to

  1041. share it

  1042. with

  1043. others?

  1044. The doctrine

  1045. of Scripture

  1046. is so

  1047. valuable because

  1048. sometimes our

  1049. view of the

  1050. Word of God

  1051. gets fuzzy,

  1052. gets out of

  1053. focus,

  1054. and the

  1055. doctrine of

  1056. Scripture

  1057. is like

  1058. that lens

  1059. that reminds

  1060. us the

  1061. Bible

  1062. matters.

  1063. It's crucial

  1064. to our

  1065. life of

  1066. faith.

  1067. Sometimes

  1068. our taste

  1069. for the

  1070. Word of

  1071. God,

  1072. if we're

  1073. honest,

  1074. gets weak.

  1075. We'd

  1076. rather spend

  1077. our time

  1078. reading,

  1079. watching,

  1080. doing something

  1081. else.

  1082. So we

  1083. need the

  1084. doctrine of

  1085. Scripture

  1086. to remind

  1087. us that

  1088. God's

  1089. Word

  1090. should be,

  1091. ought to be

  1092. sweeter than

  1093. honey to

  1094. us as the

  1095. people of

  1096. God.

  1097. So I

  1098. want to

  1099. do,

  1100. for the

  1101. last of

  1102. our time

  1103. to snow,

  1104. is,

  1105. I never

  1106. use acronyms,

  1107. but we're

  1108. going to use

  1109. an acronym,

  1110. second acronym,

  1111. we scan,

  1112. if you want to

  1113. think about the

  1114. doctrine of

  1115. Scripture,

  1116. scan,

  1117. but to

  1118. think about

  1119. the Bible

  1120. for everyday

  1121. life for a

  1122. Christian,

  1123. think about

  1124. the word

  1125. sweet.

  1126. Okay,

  1127. so five

  1128. sweet truths

  1129. about the

  1130. Bible for

  1131. everyday life,

  1132. because Psalm

    Psalms 19:10

  1133. 19 verse

  1134. 10 says,

  1135. they are

  1136. sweeter,

  1137. God's

  1138. words are

  1139. sweeter than

  1140. honey,

  1141. than honey

  1142. from the

  1143. comb.

  1144. Okay,

  1145. so our

  1146. first letter

  1147. is S,

  1148. and S

  1149. stands for

  1150. sanctify,

  1151. God's

  1152. Word

  1153. sanctifies,

  1154. God's

  1155. Word is

  1156. what makes

  1157. us holy

  1158. and clean

  1159. as we

  1160. sit under

  1161. it and

  1162. allow it

  1163. to change

  1164. us.

  1165. Jesus

  1166. said,

  1167. John 17

  1168. 17,

  1169. he prayed

  1170. to his

  1171. father,

  1172. sanctify

  1173. them by

  1174. the truth,

  1175. your

  1176. Word is

  1177. truth.

  1178. So the

  1179. truths of

  1180. the Bible

  1181. are what

  1182. God uses

  1183. to make

  1184. us clean

  1185. and holy

  1186. for him.

  1187. Perhaps

  1188. an image

  1189. would be

  1190. helpful,

  1191. the image

  1192. of a

  1193. doctor.

  1194. Say you

  1195. go to a

  1196. doctor because

  1197. you've got

  1198. an infection.

  1199. Well,

  1200. the doctor

  1201. there discovers

  1202. the infection,

  1203. diagnoses the

  1204. infection,

  1205. gives medicine

  1206. to cure.

  1207. What does

  1208. the Bible

  1209. do?

  1210. The Bible,

  1211. when we

  1212. allow it,

  1213. exposes

  1214. sin and

  1215. error.

  1216. It convicts

  1217. us of

  1218. where we

  1219. go wrong

  1220. and it

  1221. shows and

  1222. enables a

  1223. new way

  1224. of life

  1225. if we

  1226. allow it

  1227. to.

  1228. It requires

  1229. the work

  1230. of the

  1231. Spirit to

  1232. shine the

  1233. light of

  1234. Scripture.

  1235. to convict

  1236. us.

  1237. It requires

  1238. the Spirit

  1239. to give us

  1240. the power

  1241. to obey

  1242. what we

  1243. read,

  1244. to say

  1245. no to

  1246. sin and

  1247. yes to

  1248. righteousness.

  1249. So if we

  1250. want to

  1251. grow in

  1252. grace,

  1253. if we

  1254. want to

  1255. grow to

  1256. be more

  1257. holy,

  1258. to be

  1259. more like

  1260. Jesus,

  1261. we need

  1262. our

  1263. Bibles.

  1264. And one

  1265. of the

  1266. things that

  1267. the Bible

  1268. will always

  1269. do,

  1270. if we

  1271. allow it,

  1272. it will

  1273. remind us

  1274. that God

  1275. is worthy

  1276. of worship

  1277. and God

  1278. alone and

  1279. not us.

  1280. Constantly

  1281. be recalibrating

  1282. our thinking.

  1283. It will

  1284. constantly

  1285. be reminding

  1286. us that

  1287. we are

  1288. called to

  1289. live for

  1290. God's

  1291. glory and

  1292. not our

  1293. own.

  1294. And it

  1295. will constantly

  1296. be showing

  1297. us the

  1298. wonder of

  1299. God and

  1300. his love.

  1301. So our

  1302. hearts may

  1303. be changed,

  1304. so our

  1305. lives may

  1306. be changed.

  1307. So God's

  1308. word sanctifies.

  1309. God's word

  1310. also warns,

  1311. and we

  1312. have that

  1313. also in

  1314. Psalm 19

    Psalms 19:11

  1315. verse 11,

  1316. by them,

  1317. by those

  1318. words of

  1319. God is

  1320. your servant

  1321. warned.

  1322. In keeping

  1323. them,

  1324. there is

  1325. great

  1326. reward.

  1327. The Bible

  1328. is very

  1329. realistic.

  1330. It's very

  1331. realistic about

  1332. the dangers

  1333. that God's

  1334. people face,

  1335. the danger

  1336. of the

  1337. devil,

  1338. our

  1339. adversary,

  1340. the deceiver,

  1341. the one who

  1342. prowls around

  1343. like a roaring

  1344. lion,

  1345. seeking whom

  1346. he may

  1347. devour.

  1348. There is

  1349. also,

  1350. in the

  1351. book of

  1352. Hebrews,

  1353. the danger

  1354. of drift.

  1355. The book

  1356. of Revelation,

  1357. the danger

  1358. of becoming

  1359. lukewarm

  1360. in our

  1361. faith.

  1362. There's the

  1363. danger of

  1364. disobedience,

  1365. there's the

  1366. danger of

  1367. disbelief.

  1368. And we

  1369. need the

  1370. Bible so

  1371. that we

  1372. keep hearing

  1373. those warnings

  1374. so that we

  1375. can check

  1376. ourselves and

  1377. see where

  1378. we need

  1379. corrected,

  1380. where we

  1381. need rebuked.

  1382. an image

  1383. perhaps to

  1384. help us.

  1385. Think of

  1386. a parent.

  1387. Why does

  1388. a parent

  1389. give warnings?

  1390. Well,

  1391. on our

  1392. best days,

  1393. parents give

  1394. warnings out

  1395. of love.

  1396. Don't touch

  1397. that,

  1398. it's hot.

  1399. Don't run

  1400. on the road,

  1401. it's busy,

  1402. you'll get

  1403. hurt.

  1404. Why do

  1405. we correct,

  1406. why do we

  1407. discipline,

  1408. again,

  1409. on our

  1410. best days?

  1411. Because of

  1412. love.

  1413. We have

  1414. a loving

  1415. Father in

  1416. heaven,

  1417. and he

  1418. uses the

  1419. Bible to

  1420. sound a

  1421. loving

  1422. warning for

  1423. us,

  1424. to warn

  1425. us of

  1426. sin,

  1427. to warn

  1428. us of

  1429. judgment,

  1430. to warn

  1431. us of

  1432. the reality

  1433. of hell,

  1434. to show

  1435. us our

  1436. need.

  1437. We have

  1438. a loving

  1439. Father who

  1440. wants to

  1441. correct us

  1442. when we

  1443. go wrong,

  1444. when we

  1445. get pulled

  1446. towards

  1447. idolatry,

  1448. when we

  1449. get pulled

  1450. into rebellion,

  1451. to return

  1452. us onto

  1453. the right

  1454. path.

  1455. So he

  1456. needs our

  1457. Bibles,

  1458. so that we

  1459. are hearing

  1460. those warnings,

  1461. to avoid

  1462. being burned,

  1463. to enjoy

  1464. the Father's

  1465. smile,

  1466. and not

  1467. the Father's

  1468. frown.

  1469. So God's

  1470. word warns.

  1471. But it

  1472. also encourages

  1473. us,

  1474. there's a

  1475. wonderful text

  1476. in Romans

  1477. 15,

  1478. Romans 15

  1479. and verse

  1480. 4,

  1481. where it

  1482. says,

  1483. everything that

  1484. was written

  1485. in the past

  1486. was written

  1487. to teach

  1488. us,

  1489. so that

  1490. through the

  1491. endurance

  1492. taught in

  1493. the scriptures

  1494. and the

  1495. encouragement

  1496. the scriptures

  1497. provide,

  1498. we might

  1499. have hope.

  1500. Scripture

  1501. encourages us,

  1502. Scripture

  1503. gives hope,

  1504. God's word

  1505. calls us to

  1506. have hope

  1507. in a God

  1508. who will not

  1509. disappoint.

  1510. As people

  1511. we're always

  1512. looking for

  1513. hope.

  1514. In just a few

  1515. weeks time we're

  1516. going to be doing

  1517. Hope Explored,

  1518. inviting family and

  1519. friends to think

  1520. about hope,

  1521. meaning and

  1522. purpose that's

  1523. found in

  1524. Jesus.

  1525. So God's

  1526. word encourages

  1527. us by pointing

  1528. us to the hope

  1529. that we have

  1530. in Jesus.

  1531. So here

  1532. perhaps the

  1533. image is that

  1534. of a coach,

  1535. I think,

  1536. in the world

  1537. of sports.

  1538. Those words

  1539. that keep you

  1540. going when

  1541. you'd rather

  1542. quit.

  1543. Words that

  1544. help you

  1545. persevere and

  1546. that renew

  1547. motivation.

  1548. And the

  1549. Bible is full

  1550. of encouragements.

  1551. full of

  1552. beautiful truths

  1553. about our

  1554. God.

  1555. God is our

  1556. refuge.

  1557. God is a

  1558. strong rock.

  1559. God's mercies

  1560. are new every

  1561. morning.

  1562. Our God is a

  1563. God of steadfast

  1564. love.

  1565. Jesus is a

  1566. Savior who

  1567. will never

  1568. leave us

  1569. or abandon

  1570. us.

  1571. In Jesus

  1572. there is no

  1573. condemnation.

  1574. There is

  1575. resurrection hope.

  1576. There is a

  1577. new heaven

  1578. and earth.

  1579. God's word

  1580. is constantly

  1581. looking to

  1582. encourage us

  1583. to keep

  1584. on going.

  1585. And so we

  1586. need the

  1587. Bible because

  1588. we need that

  1589. fresh encouragement

  1590. day by day.

  1591. The next

  1592. E to think

  1593. about.

  1594. The Bible

  1595. enlightens us.

  1596. Again this is

  1597. Psalm 19

    Psalms 19:8

  1598. verse 8

  1599. where we read

  1600. the commands

  1601. of the Lord

  1602. are radiant

  1603. giving light

  1604. to the eyes.

  1605. in the midst

  1606. of moral

  1607. darkness and

  1608. confusion.

  1609. What does

  1610. the Bible

  1611. do for us?

  1612. It shines

  1613. a clear light

  1614. for us on

  1615. how we are

  1616. to live in

  1617. our families,

  1618. in our society,

  1619. in our workplaces,

  1620. in our church.

  1621. Perhaps an

  1622. image that's

  1623. helpful to

  1624. think of a

  1625. guide leading

  1626. people on a

  1627. difficult mountain

  1628. pass.

  1629. Perhaps the

  1630. conditions become

  1631. dark but that

  1632. guide is up

  1633. ahead and he's

  1634. got the torch

  1635. and he's got

  1636. the ropes and

  1637. he knows the

  1638. way and there's

  1639. safety in

  1640. following that

  1641. path.

  1642. There is

  1643. safety in

  1644. following the

  1645. guidance of

  1646. God's Word.

  1647. We need the

  1648. Bible to hear

  1649. that voice of

  1650. true wisdom.

  1651. We know that

  1652. we're surrounded

  1653. by all kinds of

  1654. other voices and

  1655. views that

  1656. disagree sometimes

  1657. fundamentally with

  1658. what God's Word

  1659. teaches.

  1660. And so we

  1661. need the

  1662. wisdom principles

  1663. that we find

  1664. in the Bible.

  1665. Now we're not

  1666. going to find

  1667. specifics and

  1668. sometimes we can

  1669. go wrong because

  1670. we come with

  1671. very specific

  1672. questions.

  1673. Should I take

  1674. this job?

  1675. Should I move

  1676. to this place?

  1677. Should I marry

  1678. this person?

  1679. That's not what

  1680. the Bible is

  1681. concerned with in

  1682. the first instance.

  1683. It's principles

1684. for how to live a

  1685. holy life, how to

  1686. live for the glory

  1687. of God day by

  1688. day and there

  1689. are wisdom

  1690. principles to

  1691. enlighten us that

  1692. we need to be

  1693. listening to.

  1694. And then the

  1695. last thing,

  1696. God's Word does

  1697. many things more

  1698. than this, but

  1699. here's the last

  1700. thing for every

  1701. life God's Word

  1702. teaches us.

  1703. Psalm 119, that

  1704. great love song to

  1705. the Bible, verse

  1706. 68, you are good

  1707. and what you do

  1708. is good.

  1709. teach me your

  1710. decrees.

  1711. The Bible teaches

  1712. us, the Bible

  1713. trains us to come

  1714. with an open

  1715. heart, to come

  1716. with a willing

  1717. heart, to come

  1718. ready to listen

  1719. to God speaking

  1720. by his Spirit

  1721. through the Word.

  1722. It means the

  1723. Spirit is able to

  1724. teach us, the

  1725. Spirit is able to

  1726. transform us.

  1727. God's Word is

  1728. like a teacher

  1729. who brings old

  1730. and new truths

  1731. to life for us.

  1732. And so we are

  1733. called to

  1734. treasure the

  1735. Bible, recognizing

  1736. that there's

  1737. always so much

  1738. more for us to

  1739. discover.

  1740. Our God is

  1741. infinite and

  1742. eternal, so we're

  1743. never done

  1744. understanding the

  1745. character of God,

  1746. the nature of God,

  1747. the promises of

  1748. God.

  1749. We'll never grow

  1750. tired of discovering

  1751. the wonder of the

  1752. gospel.

  1753. we're always

  1754. going to need to

  1755. hear about

  1756. fighting against

  1757. sin, about

  1758. pursuing holiness,

  1759. about living for

  1760. future hope.

  1761. And so God's

  1762. Word teaches

  1763. us.

  1764. So it

  1765. sanctifies us,

  1766. it warns us,

  1767. it encourages us,

  1768. it enlightens us,

  1769. and it teaches

  1770. us.

  1771. all that's

  1772. left,

  1773. again, to

  1774. borrow the

  1775. language of the

  1776. Bible, taste and

  1777. see that God is

  1778. good.

1779. I hope that as we

  1780. see the importance

  1781. of believing the

  1782. Bible is God's

  1783. Word, as we come

  1784. to see that God

  1785. teaches us that it's

  1786. reliable, it has

  1787. authority, it's

  1788. true, it's life

  1789. giving, that we'll be

  1790. encouraged to pick it

1791. up and to read it,

  1792. to recognize how

  1793. necessary, how vital

  1794. and life giving it

  1795. is for us.

  1796. Two quotes to

  1797. finish, one from

  1798. Spurgeon, again, to

  1799. give us confidence in

1800. the Word of God and

1801. its power to work in

1802. our life and in the

  1803. lives of others.

  1804. Scripture is like a

  1805. lion.

  1806. Whoever heard of

  1807. defending a lion,

  1808. turn it loose, it

  1809. will defend itself.

  1810. And then Calvin,

  1811. Scripture is like a

  1812. pair of spectacles,

  1813. which dispels the

  1814. darkness and gives

1815. us a clear view of

  1816. God.

1817. And may that be the

1818. case for each one of

  1819. us.

  1820. Let's pray briefly.

1821. Lord, we thank you so

  1822. much for your Word.

1823. We thank you for what

  1824. it says about itself

  1825. and what it reveals

  1826. about your character

  1827. and about your

  1828. salvation.

  1829. Lord, we pray that

1830. you would give us an

  1831. increasing desire to be

  1832. people shaped by your

  1833. Word.

  1834. Give us time to

  1835. spend with you.

  1836. Give us that

  1837. discipline to make the

  1838. time.

1839. Give us open hearts to

  1840. receive from you that

  1841. increasingly we be

  1842. conformed into the

  1843. likeness of the Lord

  1844. Jesus as we are

  1845. shaped by your Word.

1846. We pray in Jesus' name.

  1847. Amen.

  1848. Amen.

  1849. So we're going to

  1850. close the formal part

  1851. of the evening

  1852. singing Psalm 19.

  1853. And then after that,

1854. if you want to stick

  1855. around, you'll be very

1856. welcome for a time of

  1857. discussion.

  1858. And after this, we'll

  1859. stick our discussion

  1860. questions up.

  1861. But let's stand for

  1862. Psalm 19, verses 7 to

    Psalms 19:7–11

  1863. 11.

  1864. Psalm 19.

  1865. Psalm 19.

  1866. Psalm 19.

  1867. Psalm 19.

  1868. Psalm 19.

  1869. Psalm 19.

  1870. Psalm 19.

  1871. Psalm 19.

  1872. Psalm 19.

  1873. Psalm 19.

  1874. Psalm 19.

  1875. Psalm 19.

  1876. Psalm 19.

  1877. Psalm 19.

  1878. Psalm 19.

  1879. Psalm 19.

  1880. Psalm 19.
