  1. Father, idols affect us in many, many different and very powerful ways, and we don't even think about it most of the time.

  2. We're not even a category that we think of.

  3. But Father, your word makes clear that the more that idols grip our heart, the harder it is for us to take you at your word.

  4. So we ask, Father, that you would continue to show mercy and grace to us this morning and pour out the Holy Spirit deeply upon us

  5. so that your word might grip us and we might take you at your word, that we might know Jesus, that we might know you, and we might be filled with the Holy Spirit.

  6. Father, this we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  7. Please be seated.

  8. So I have a couple of apologies.

  9. Last week I messed up my sermon in two ways.

  10. One of the ways, those of you who are here, and by the way, if you've listened to my sermon online, you won't know this because Andrew fixed it.

  11. But I got my 10,000 and 20,000 all mixed up, and I'm sure it was confusing to some of you that the analogy didn't make sense.

  12. The other thing was, and pray for me all the time that I don't make those mistakes.

  13. Some of you know I'll say Moses when it should have been Joshua or something else.

  14. I can get things like that mixed up.

  15. So pray for me all the time.

  16. I know many of you do, and I really appreciate it.

  17. The other mistake I made, it's sort of a mild one because I didn't talk about it in an inflammatory way,

  18. but one of the things we talked about last Sunday was rape, actually, because it's in the biblical text.

  19. And I was thinking about it while I was driving home that, I mean, that's not an abstract.

  20. Like for me as a guy, I can talk about it.

  21. But for women, many women, maybe even women who are here, that you might have experienced a rape.

  22. And I should have probably just said a little bit about that just before I talked about it in case it was triggering anything.

  23. Today, I know that there are people here who have been affected by genocide.

  24. And we're going to talk about genocide a little bit this morning.

  25. And some of you, if you're a guest, you're a bit surprised that a church would talk about such things.

  26. But that's one of the benefits you get of preaching through books in the Bible.

  27. You look at topics that, if it was up to me, I'd probably never talk about.

  28. I'd probably just give you a few positive thoughts on leadership or attitude maintenance and send you off on your way.

  29. But the Bible makes us look at things.

  30. And the wonderful thing about the Bible is the same thing that catches many Canadians by surprise,

  31. is that the Bible is so realistic about the world that it catches readers by surprise.

  32. They're expecting something religious and spiritual.

  33. Those of you who've seen the Netflix series, The Messiah, which I'm not recommending,

  34. you expect the Bible to talk a little bit like him.

  35. But the Bible talks about real life, but it's never cynical.

  36. It's never cynical.

  37. It talks about the real world in the context of the living God.

  38. And it talks about the real world in a redemptive way that we would call out to him.

  39. So today, we are going to be mentioning genocide a little bit

  40. because the text talks about it.

  41. And, you know, one of those things, we should just know that the Bible brings these things to our mind,

  42. that we can know Jesus better.

  43. So it begins.

  44. We're looking at Joshua 6, verse 1.

    Joshua 6:1

  45. I announced that at the beginning.

  46. Some of it, if not all of the text, will be up on the screen

  47. if you don't have your own Bibles.

  48. But it's really good to bring your own Bibles.

  49. And this is how the story begins.

  50. The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  51. And the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian seven years.

  52. Now, just pause.

  53. Some of you who have been going through this series with me

  54. know that it seems like every new story begins with something like that.

  55. They do evil, and the Lord delivers them into the hand of some people group.

  56. And so, well, first of all, just, I say it every week,

  57. but it's important to remember, doing evil means in particular that they,

  58. and we're going to talk about this more in a moment,

  59. that they start serving other gods and goddesses, and they serve idols.

  60. So they depart from the Lord.

  61. And the giving to them is actually a profound expression of human freedom,

  62. is that the punishment that they get is getting what they want.

  63. The punishment isn't not getting what they want.

  64. That's usually when people think about God, the God, the triune God of the Bible.

  65. They think the triune God of the Bible is a big meanie who is the no-fun God,

  66. no-pleasure God, no-joy God.

  67. And he looks around and sees things that make people happy and says,

  68. na-na-na-na-na.

  69. No, that's not the God of the Bible, actually.

  70. Like, this is a shocking thing, and the book of Judges will slowly unpack it.

  71. But often his judgment is allowing you to have what you want,

  72. like respecting your freedom.

  73. But a lot of what we want will devour us.

  74. And that's what happens here.

  75. They go after the gods of the people, and the gods of the people,

  76. the people who worship that gods, devour them.

  77. Now, there's one other important thing here,

  78. and I'm not going to spend a long time on it,

  79. but this is actually one of the big ideas of the entire book of Judges.

  80. And I might now put it in every couple of weeks,

  81. because it helps you to understand the whole book of Judges

  82. and every individual text.

  83. In Canada, many people say that all paths lead to God.

  84. But the Bible says, Christians would say, Jesus would say,

  85. it is not true that all paths lead to God.

  86. But it is true that the triune God uses many paths to bring people to himself.

  87. And that's one of the things that you're going to see.

  88. It's not that God constantly is locked into a particular pattern.

  89. He uses a prophetess and a woman with a tent peg,

  90. and he uses a warrior,

  91. and then he uses a completely and utterly debauched person like Samson later on.

  92. And he uses Gideon.

  93. And the pattern keeps changing.

  94. And it's the same thing, you know,

  95. if we were to take some time and break up into small groups,

  96. and those of us who are Christians,

  97. we were to share how we became Christians,

  98. we'd be surprised at the many different ways

  99. that God has used to bring people to himself.

  100. And that's part of the big story of Judges,

  101. is that God doesn't keep working the exact same way.

  102. He works different ways every time.

  103. And so how is it going to be different in this particular time?

  104. Well, let's start to read the story.

  105. Verse 2 of chapter 6.

  106. Verse 2 of chapter 6.

  107. And the hand of Midian overpowered Israel.

  108. And because of Midian,

  109. the people of Israel made for themselves

  110. the dens that are in the mountains

  111. and the caves and the strongholds.

  112. For whenever the Israelites planted crops,

  113. the Midianites and the Amalekites

  114. and the people of the east

  115. would come up against them.

  116. They would encamp against them

  117. and devour the produce...

  118. I skipped it too quick.

  119. They would encamp against them

  120. and devour the produce of the land as far as Gaza

  121. and leave no sustenance in Israel

  122. and no sheep or ox or donkey.

  123. Now we're up on the screen.

  124. It should be the right verse.

  125. For they would come up with their livestock

  126. and their tents.

  127. They would come like locusts in number.

  128. Both they and their camels could not be counted

  129. so that they laid waste the land as they came in.

  130. And Israel was brought very low because of Midian.

  131. And the people of Israel cried out for help to the Lord.

  132. Now just sort of pause here for a second.

  133. What's going on here is genocide,

  134. attempted genocide of the people of Israel.

  135. It's not that a foreign power has come in to conquer.

  136. It isn't that a foreign power has come in

  137. to merely live there, to occupy the land.

  138. They're doing something very, very, very different.

  139. And it's very significant.

  140. I didn't plan it,

  141. that just recently we've been remembering

  142. the anniversary of the Holocaust.

  143. There's been newspaper and other media outlets around that.

  144. The closest I came to it was as a young kid,

  145. 10, 11, 12-year-old boy.

  146. I was a Boy Scout.

  147. And I remember being in the car one day

  148. with my Boy Scout leader.

  149. And I lived in an all-Jewish neighborhood.

  150. And as I'm driving, I look over

  151. and I notice for the first time

  152. tattooed numbers on the arm of my Scoutmaster.

  153. And I asked him what it was about.

  154. And he got teary-eyed.

  155. And his wife said,

  156. well, and then she told me,

  157. he was in the camps.

  158. He is a survivor.

  159. He was a survivor of the Holocaust.

  160. And even just as relevant,

  161. maybe more relevant in this particular case,

  162. some of you might know of something

  163. which is very familiar to Ukrainians,

  164. is that in the 1930s,

  165. the Soviet Union created a forced famine

  166. in the Ukraine to punish the Ukrainians.

  167. And as a result of that forced famine,

  168. millions and millions and millions of people died.

  169. And it's remembered by Ukrainians.

  170. It's a double tragedy

  171. because all of the leading lights

  172. of North America and Western civilization

  173. were praising Soviet Union

  174. for being a great,

  175. a perfect place to live.

  176. At the same time that they were praising them,

  177. they were creating a forced famine

  178. to literally kill millions and millions

  179. of Ukrainians.

  180. So what's happening here in this story

  181. is that Midian comes in,

  182. they steal the animals,

  183. they steal the food,

  184. and after they've stolen

  185. all they can carry

  186. and all they can consume,

  187. they destroy everything else.

  188. They destroy everything else.

  189. And this is very hard for us in Canada

  190. to understand right now.

  191. Like I'm old enough

  192. that I remember

  193. when there were certain fruits

  194. you didn't get all year round.

  195. Like I remember

  196. when all of a sudden

  197. it was exciting

  198. that there was fruit in the stores again

  199. in the spring.

  200. But, you know,

  201. for much of the world,

  202. one bad crop means

  203. hundreds if not thousands

  204. of people die.

  205. And this was an intentional policy

  206. by the Midianites.

  207. And its only purpose

  208. would have been

  209. to destroy

  210. the people of Israel.

  211. And that's the situation

  212. which they're in.

  213. So,

  214. how is God going to respond?

  215. So you see in the text up there

  216. they cry out to the Lord for help.

  217. It's all part of the normal pattern.

  218. So how is God going to respond to this?

  219. Well,

  220. he breaks the pattern.

  221. He does something

  222. which is a little bit different.

  223. He sends them a sermon.

  224. Not what they were expecting.

  225. Not what they were wanting.

  226. But if you just pause

  227. and think about it for a second.

  228. I just said how kids

  229. at a certain age

  230. when they lose it

  231. they just lose it.

  232. Their poor little brains

  233. aren't developed enough.

  234. They just,

  235. their brains aren't developed enough.

  236. You know,

  237. like

  238. all you can do

  239. is try to

  240. comfort them

  241. and quiet them

  242. in some type of way.

  243. But when the kids get older,

  244. like every single one of us

  245. who has kids

  246. this is what we do.

  247. It's not just that they

  248. you know,

  249. they mess up,

  250. they do something

  251. really, really wrong

  252. and you have to end up

  253. either, you know,

  254. both disciplining them

  255. and maybe rescuing them.

  256. But the other thing

  257. that every parent does

  258. is you want them

  259. to understand

  260. that it's wrong.

  261. And hopefully

  262. you do that

  263. in a good way.

  264. I remember being

  265. in a Starbucks

  266. and a parent

  267. was trying to discipline

  268. her five-year-old kid

  269. and the way she said it is

  270. she's kept doing bad things.

  271. It was in a Starbucks

  272. connected to a chapter

  273. of Indigo Books

  274. and she kept going

  275. and taking books

  276. and sort of wrecking them.

  277. And she said,

  278. it's how she tried

  279. to teach the kid

  280. right and wrong.

  281. You're making mommy unhappy.

  282. I thought,

  283. what?

  284. I almost went over

  285. and said,

  286. that's not how you tell a kid

  287. not to do something wrong.

  288. You're making me unhappy.

  289. You know,

  290. anyway,

  291. there you go.

  292. I mean,

  293. Lord have mercy

  294. upon that parent

  295. and the poor little kid,

  296. however they're going to develop.

  297. But the fact of the matter

  298. is that we all try to explain.

  299. And so what happens here

  300. isn't what,

  301. and nobody usually wants

  302. to have that happen to them,

  303. but at the end of the day

  304. that's how we hopefully learn

  305. how to be vaguely moral,

  306. if not well,

  307. you know,

  308. more moral individuals.

  309. And so that's what happens here.

  310. God this time

  311. doesn't just deliver them.

  312. He sends them a sermon.

  313. So here you see

  314. verse 7 and 8.

  315. When the people of Israel

  316. cried out to the Lord

  317. on account of the Midianites,

  318. the Lord sent a prophet

  319. to the people of Israel

  320. and he said to them,

  321. and here's the summary

  322. of the message.

  323. So we had a,

  324. God sends a prophet

  325. that wanders around

  326. the people of Israel

  327. and this is the summary

  328. of his message.

  329. Thus says the Lord,

  330. the God of Israel,

  331. I led you up from Egypt

  332. and brought you out

  333. of the house of slavery

  334. and I delivered you

  335. from the hand of the Egyptians

  336. and from the hand

  337. of all who oppressed you

  338. and drove them out before you

  339. and gave you their land.

  340. And I said to you,

  341. I am the Lord your God.

  342. You shall not fear

  343. the gods of the Amorites

  344. in whose land you dwell,

  345. but you have not

  346. obeyed my voice.

  347. Now,

  348. this is very,

  349. very,

  350. very significant

  351. what he says.

  352. I'm going to put this up.

  353. This was a very slow lesson

  354. for Israel to learn

  355. and obviously

  356. they didn't learn

  357. about the triune God

  358. until Jesus came,

  359. although all of the hints

  360. of the fact

  361. that God is triune

  362. are all the way

  363. through the Old Testament.

  364. But unlike idols,

  365. the triune God is love

  366. and he loves ordinary people

  367. like you.

  368. Unlike idols,

  369. the triune God is love

  370. and he loves ordinary people

  371. like you.

  372. If you do a bit of research

  373. about the gods

  374. of the world at that time,

  375. the reason they created

  376. human beings

  377. was to feed them,

  378. not for the gods

  379. to feed human beings,

  380. but for the human beings

  381. to feed the gods.

  382. In a sense,

  383. a human being

  384. was just a type of slave

  385. for the God,

  386. a servant of the God.

  387. But the Bible teaches

  388. something radically,

  389. radically different

  390. and it's caught

  391. in this scripture text.

  392. I'll just put back

  393. to the scripture text.

  394. We lose the full significance

  395. of reveal.

  396. You know,

  397. we go to a bank machine

  398. and we stick our bank card

  399. in the machine

  400. and it knows our name

  401. and it reveals

  402. that it's the right bank machine

  403. by all of its signs

  404. and we just think of that

  405. as being something

  406. mechanical

  407. and something automatic.

  408. But,

  409. if you understand

  410. that from all eternity,

  411. before there was any human being

  412. that was ever made,

  413. that God the Father

  414. loved the Son

  415. and the Son

  416. loved the Father

  417. and the Holy Spirit

  418. is both the love

  419. between the Father

  420. and the Son

  421. and the Son

  422. between the Father

  423. and the Holy Spirit

  424. is a person

  425. himself

  426. and also is love

  427. and that all things

  428. were created

  429. out of God's love

  430. for human beings

  431. and only

  432. the triune God

  433. can account

  434. for the fact

  435. that we value

  436. love so highly.

  437. The idols don't love

  438. but God loves.

  439. He creates all things

  440. out of love

  441. and it's out of love

  442. that he delivers them

  443. out of Egypt.

  444. It's out of love

  445. that he delivers them

  446. constantly from their oppressors

  447. and it's out of love

  448. that he reveals himself.

  449. Think of it this way.

  450. When I do,

  451. when somebody asks me

  452. to do their wedding ceremony,

  453. I almost always say,

  454. how did you meet?

  455. Everybody meets

  456. somehow or another.

  457. You know,

  458. maybe some of you met

  459. when you were in grade 5

  460. or grade 6

  461. or grade 7

  462. or grade 8

  463. or some of you met

  464. far later than that

  465. but everybody meets

  466. the other some way

  467. and in many cases,

  468. I know it's a bit different now

  469. because you can meet people online

  470. but even then

  471. there must be something

  472. that's a little bit like that

  473. is that what happens

  474. when you meet somebody

  475. that you're going to start,

  476. you're going to fall in love

  477. is the other,

  478. for the whole process

  479. to happen,

  480. the other person

  481. has to,

  482. you have to reveal

  483. a little bit about the fact

  484. that you like the person

  485. and they have to reveal

  486. back to you a little bit

  487. about the fact

  488. that they like you

  489. and a little bit

  490. about who they are.

  491. That's how it works.

  492. I mean,

  493. for my wife and I,

  494. it begins,

  495. we're sitting at the same

  496. library table

  497. and you glance over

  498. and there's glances

  499. and there's glances

  500. and mine was the second

  501. type of glance

  502. not the first type of glance

  503. and she glances back

  504. and because I was

  505. pathologically shy

  506. around women

  507. and the more attractive

  508. the woman was,

  509. the more pathologically shy

  510. and embarrassed

  511. and awkward I would be.

  512. You know,

  513. if there is a purgatory,

  514. purgatory for me

  515. would be showing

  516. everybody films

  517. of what I was like

  518. in the presence

  519. of such a woman

  520. and that would be

  521. purgatory for me

  522. amongst other types

  523. of things.

  524. Amusing for all of you,

  525. cringeworthy

  526. and embarrassing

  527. for me.

  528. Anyway,

  529. but eventually

  530. at some point in time

  531. despite my pathological shyness

  532. it goes from glances

  533. to high

  534. to which

  535. the other person

  536. can either

  537. give the very powerful

  538. signals,

  539. what is this creep

  540. doing talking to me

  541. or they can say

  542. hi back.

  543. Right?

  544. And we don't think

  545. about it much

  546. but that's what happens

  547. is you go through

  548. a process of revealing

  549. yourself to the other person

  550. and the other person

  551. revealing themselves

  552. to you.

  553. And that's what's

  554. going on here.

  555. That's what's going on.

  556. That's what's so

  557. completely and utterly

  558. stunning about

  559. the book of Exodus.

  560. It's what's so stunning

  561. about everything

  562. in the Bible

  563. and it's just so stunning

  564. that we don't get it

  565. because we think of this

  566. as a mechanical

  567. type of process

  568. but what God does

  569. is he said

  570. listen

  571. I delivered you

  572. out of slavery

  573. in Egypt

  574. I deliver you

  575. from your oppressors

  576. and I revealed

  577. myself to you

  578. I made myself

  579. known to you

  580. to show you

  581. that I love you

  582. that I want to be

  583. in a relationship

  584. with you

  585. and I want you

  586. I'm hoping

  587. that you respond

  588. by my acts

  589. of mighty love

  590. and my love

  591. of revealing myself

  592. to you

  593. that you would

  594. reveal yourself

  595. to me

  596. and love me.

  597. and instead

  598. about not

  599. worshiping other gods

  600. I mean

  601. if next Sunday

  602. Louise came in

  603. and said to you folks

  604. one on one

  605. drink coffee

  606. by the way

  607. George has

  608. affections

  609. towards another woman

  610. he's in love

  611. with another woman

  612. as well as with me

  613. every single one

  614. of you would

  615. side with her

  616. and you'd be right

  617. to side with her

  618. because you know

  619. that just doesn't

  620. work with love

  621. and so if you

  622. think about it

  623. within that context

  624. that God is love

  625. from all eternity

  626. is out of the

  627. overflow of his love

  628. that he creates

  629. and that human beings

  630. in rebellion

  631. against God

  632. want to become

  633. their own God

  634. and turn against him

  635. and all the things

  636. that happen

  637. and God delivers

  638. out of slavery

  639. delivers out of oppression

  640. delivers us

  641. from our sins

  642. and delivers us

  643. and delivers us

  644. and reveals himself

  645. in such a way

  646. that we would

  647. know who he is

  648. just like

  649. you know

  650. at some point in time

  651. Louise revealed

  652. herself to me

  653. and I reveal myself

  654. to her

  655. and because we're

  656. finite human beings

  657. that's a process

  658. that goes on

  659. for good

  660. and sometimes

  661. really well

  662. and sometimes

  663. not very well

  664. for all of the

  665. time that you're

  666. together

  667. and then God

  668. says all I ask

  669. is that you don't

  670. worship other gods

  671. and what does the

  672. prophet say

  673. but you have not

  674. listened to my voice

  675. you have not

  676. listened to my voice

  677. now what we're

  678. going to see next

  679. is we're going to

  680. meet the first

  681. Canadian in the

  682. Bible

  683. you didn't know

  684. that but the

  685. first Canadian

  686. who could fit

  687. into any coffee

  688. I mean any

  689. coffee shop

  690. whether it's

  691. Tim Hortons

  692. or a hipster

  693. place or something

  694. like Starbucks

  695. which isn't hipster

  696. you'd

  697. you could meet

  698. this character

  699. and his name

  700. is Gideon

  701. and here's

  702. here's what

  703. happens with

  704. Gideon

  705. remember the

  706. prophet's been

  707. going giving

  708. this message

  709. verse 11

  710. God isn't

  711. just giving

  712. a sermon

  713. he's going

  714. to deliver

  715. the people

  716. of Israel

  717. verse 11

  718. now the

  719. angel of

  720. the Lord

  721. came and

  722. sat under

  723. the terebinth

  724. at Ophrah

  725. which belonged

  726. to Joash

  727. the Abizrite

  728. while his

  729. son Gideon

  730. was beating

  731. out wheat

  732. in the wine

  733. press to

  734. hide it

  735. from the

  736. Midianites

  737. and the

  738. angel of

  739. the Lord

  740. appeared to

  741. him and

  742. said to

  743. him

  744. the Lord

  745. is with

  746. you

  747. almighty

  748. man of

  749. valor

  750. now just

  751. before I

  752. go to

  753. the next

  754. verse

  755. he's not

  756. a man of

  757. valor

  758. he's hiding

  759. normally when

  760. you're going

  761. to be

  762. harvesting

  763. bringing the

  764. wheat to

  765. that point

  766. in time

  767. you go to

  768. something which

  769. is like a

  770. stage compared

  771. to the floor

  772. higher up

  773. maybe not as

  774. high as this

  775. but nice and

  776. flat and high

  777. where when you

  778. beat it and

  779. then you throw

  780. it up and the

  781. wind will blow

  782. away the stuff

  783. you don't need

  784. and the wheat

  785. which is heavier

  786. falls to the

  787. ground and that's

  788. how you separate

  789. the wheat from

  790. the chaff

  791. wine presses

  792. you dig

  793. something down

  794. in the ground

  795. and it has

  796. both a lower

  797. part and a

  798. higher part

  799. but it's still

  800. low and so

  801. what Gideon is

  802. doing is he's

  803. not up there

  804. on the threshing

  805. floor he's

  806. hiding in the

  807. wine press and

  808. trying to make

  809. the whole thing

  810. work where there's

  811. no breeze and

  812. he's doing it

  813. not because he's

  814. a mighty man of

  815. valor but because

  816. he's in fact

  817. hiding from the

  818. Midianites and

  819. God is as we'll

  820. see in a moment

  821. in Gideon's

  822. response God

  823. is

  824. is

  825. is both

  826. saying something

  827. prophetic about

  828. the future but

  829. he's also saying

  830. something that's

  831. going to try to

  832. get his attention

  833. and bring something

  834. out to develop the

  835. relationship with

  836. Gideon remember I

  837. said to you that

  838. the Lord does it

  839. not it's not that

  840. all paths lead to

  841. God but the Lord

  842. uses many many

  843. different paths to

  844. bring people to

  845. himself the thing

  846. that began my

  847. journey that led

  848. me becoming a

  849. Christian was seeing

  850. an advertisement on

  851. a telephone pole on

  852. Elgin Street

  853. that's what first got

  854. my attention

  855. didn't happen any of

  856. you probably that's

  857. what happened with

  858. me God uses

  859. different things with

  860. different people but

  861. Gideon's response is

  862. this verse 13

  863. here's where we see

  864. that he's a very very

  865. typical Canadian

  866. and Gideon said to

  867. him

  868. please sir

  869. if the Lord is with

  870. us if the Lord is

  871. with us why then is

  872. all this happened to

  873. us

  874. where all his

  875. wonderful deeds

  876. their fathers recounted

  877. to us saying did not

  878. the Lord bring us up

  879. up from Egypt

  880. but now the Lord has

  881. forsaken us given us

  882. into the hand of

  883. Midian

  884. how is this like a

  885. typical Canadian

  886. here's what the

  887. typical Canadian

  888. thinks

  889. C.S. Lewis I think

  890. it was in the 40s

  891. wrote a an essay

  892. called God in the

  893. Dark and he was

  894. referring to something

  895. that he'd noticed

  896. and as a classical

  897. scholar he realized

  898. that the way that

  899. average English people

  900. and Scottish and

  901. Irish and Welch were

  902. thinking back in the

  903. 40s was very different

  904. than how most of the

  905. world thought and was

  906. very different than

  907. how people had thought

  908. throughout most of

  909. human history and for

  910. modern English people

  911. and he's talking about

  912. the 40s it's even more

  913. true today God is on in

  914. the dark in other words

  915. God's on trial for the

  916. average modern person

  917. it's like this the

  918. triune God listen the

  919. triune God we have a

  920. whole list of charges

  921. against him he is

  922. offended against us

  923. he's homophobic he's

  924. racist he's in favor of

  925. slavery he's in favor of

  926. power he hates

  927. transgender people he

  928. only wants to spoil us

  929. and have fun he's

  930. patriarchal he's this

  931. he's that he's all of

  932. these types of things

  933. and there's we have

  934. brought charges against

  935. God and any human

  936. being who wants to go

  937. and try to defend God

  938. is a reprehensible human

  939. being who does not he's

  940. not able to think he's

  941. not aware of what's

  942. really going on in life

  943. but we have brought

  944. charges against God and

  945. God we are the

  946. prosecutors we are the

  947. judge it is like a show

  948. trial God is guilty he

  949. has no defense against the

  950. charges that we can bring

  951. against him for evil

  952. homophobia denying women

  953. the right to do what

  954. they want with their

  955. body opposed to people

  956. being able to have a

  957. doctor ask them to kill

  958. them or us being able to

  959. ask the doctor to kill one

  960. of our loved ones God is

  961. guilty and it is just what

  962. everybody knows everybody

  963. knows that God is guilty

  964. and he has no possible

  965. defense

  966. that's what Gideon says

  967. he talks like a modern

  968. Canadian he talks like most

  969. of the people that are your

  970. neighbors and your

  971. co-workers and maybe how many

  972. of you maybe how some of you

  973. think

  974. you know the older I get

  975. the more I believe that

  976. Genesis 3 and Romans 1 is

  977. empirically true if you go

  978. back and read the beginning

  979. of Genesis 3 it is that the

  980. average human being desires to

  981. be like God and when that

  982. causes their life to get

  983. messed up when Adam confronts

  984. God confronts Adam Adam says

  985. not my fault Eve

  986. God speaks to Eve

  987. not my fault

  988. the snake

  989. and that is

  990. so much how we're hardwired

  991. and if you go back and read

  992. Romans 1 later on yourself

  993. and after verse 16 and 17

  994. which says sort of the theme

  995. of the whole book you read

  996. from Romans 1 18 to the end

  997. of the chapter

  998. the book talks about the fact

  999. that we are innately

  1000. worshipers and we've exchanged

  1001. worshiping of God who

  1002. we

1003. at some fundamental level we know

1004. that the triune God exists for

  1005. worshiping other things and

1006. and then one of the things

1007. which is so significant is

1008. when it gives at the end of

1009. Romans 1 it gives evidence of

1010. the fact that there is in fact a

1011. God and that we are under his

1012. judgment the way it describes

1013. that the last little bit of it

1014. is partly it is the reality of

  1015. evil

1016. that every time we experience evil

  1017. on one level

  1018. it is God

1019. we experience in a very very tiny way

  1020. God's judgment in advance

1021. and the way we experience God's judgment

1022. in advance is by actually experiencing

  1023. murder and lies

1024. and hatred and sloth and envy and gluttony

  1025. and sexual sin

1026. and sins of the mind

  1027. and selfishness

1028. that in some way sin

  1029. is its own punishment

1030. even though we choose it

1031. and friends that is just so deeply

  1032. psychologically true

1033. but we are like Gideon

  1034. who thinks that

1035. the pain that we experience

1036. as a result of the sin

  1037. that we willingly pursue

1038. is somehow a sign that God

  1039. does not exist

1040. that it is somehow his fault

1041. and we don't see the darkness

1042. that has come over our own mind

  1043. to understand that

  1044. all of that pain

1045. is to help us to understand

  1046. many things

1047. but one of those things

1048. is that the world is broken

  1049. that I am broken

1050. and even to be able to articulate broken

1051. implies that there is something unbroken

1052. someone who made it unbroken

  1053. in this broken world

1054. and this wonderful message of the Bible

1055. is the world is broken

  1056. you are broken

  1057. I still love you

  1058. I have delivered you

1059. from the house of Egypt

  1060. I have delivered you

  1061. from your oppressors

  1062. my common grace

  1063. restrains your evil

1064. and I have sent my son

1065. to die upon the cross

  1066. for you

1067. and we will talk about that

  1068. more in a moment

1069. I have to be careful

  1070. of my time here

  1071. how does Gideon respond?

  1072. well he is

  1073. so first of all

  1074. it is very interesting

1075. the angel of the Lord

1076. who is this very interesting figure

  1077. in the Old Testament

1078. it is not clear whether it is a theophany

1079. which means an appearance of God

1080. it is not clear whether it is an angel

1081. who is a special angel

  1082. that represents the Lord

1083. it is not even clear whether

1084. in fact it might be

  1085. a pre-incarnate Jesus

1086. and it is very uncertain

  1087. about what it is

  1088. in the Old Testament

1089. but you will see that

  1090. the person speaking

1091. is the same as the Lord

1092. speaking all the way through the text

1093. it is part of the mystery

1094. of what is going on here

1095. that is never actually explained

  1096. but in verse 4

1097. so the Lord actually never defends himself

1098. why does he have to defend himself?

  1099. he is love

  1100. and you know

1101. here is the other thing

  1102. not only

  1103. is it only

  1104. the triune God

1105. that can actually be a loving God

1106. but it is actually only

  1107. the triune God

  1108. who can be good

  1109. you see

  1110. if there is only

  1111. a singular God

  1112. then

1113. how can he be good?

  1114. there is just him

  1115. unless there is something

  1116. other than him

  1117. you can't actually know

  1118. if he is good

  1119. it is only

  1120. the triune God

  1121. that

  1122. you can really see

  1123. that God is love

1124. and that God is good

1125. that there is this goodness

  1126. and love

  1127. that has existed

1128. even before there was creation

1129. and even before there was the fall

1130. he does not defend himself to us

1131. he is going to redeem them

1132. he is not going to defend himself

  1133. verse 14

1134. and the Lord turned to Gideon

  1135. and said

1136. go in this might of yours

  1137. and save Israel

1138. from the hand of Midian

  1139. but then

1140. do not I send you

1141. and Gideon said to him

  1142. please Lord

1143. how can I save Israel

  1144. behold

1145. my clan is the weakest in Manasseh

1146. and I am the least in my father's house

1147. and the Lord said to him

1148. but I will be with you

1149. and you shall strike the Midianites

  1150. as one man

  1151. in other words

  1152. even though the Midianites

  1153. are like locusts

  1154. that completely and utterly

  1155. cover the land

  1156. and completely overwhelm them

1157. and even though the Israelites

  1158. have been humbled

1159. and they've been in the process

  1160. seven years

  1161. into a genocidal process

1162. so that they are deeply removed

  1163. deeply reduced

1164. that God will make the battle

  1165. with Midian

  1166. as if

1167. as if all of Israel

  1168. is fighting one man

1169. that's what the original language means

1170. as if all of Israel

1171. is just fighting one person

1172. and Gideon said to him

1173. if now I have found favor in your eyes

1174. then show me a sign

1175. that it is you who speak with me

1176. please do not depart from here

1177. until I come to you

  1178. and bring you

  1179. out my present

  1180. or my offering

1181. and set it before you

1182. and the angel of the Lord said

  1183. I will stay

  1184. until you return

  1185. I'm going to

  1186. sort of fast forward

1187. through this next little bit

1188. what you're going to see

1189. if you go on and read

1190. because I'm going to jump down

1191. to a very very important part

  1192. of the story

1193. what you're going to see here

  1194. is that God does

  1195. a remarkable miracle

  1196. Gideon is so paganized

  1197. so canaanized

1198. that when he brings an offering

1199. to the angel of the Lord

1200. he doesn't bring an offering

1201. according to the Mosaic law

  1202. what he does

1203. is he brings an offering

1204. as if he's going to be

  1205. worshipping Baha'al

  1206. or the Asherah

1207. he brings a whole goat

1208. and he brings enough bread

1209. if you take 22 pounds of flour

  1210. and make bread

  1211. that's how much bread

  1212. he brings

1213. and he brings this broth

  1214. and the angel says

1215. the angel of the Lord says

1216. put it all on a rock

1217. and then Gideon does that

1218. and the angel of the Lord

  1219. touches it

1220. and a fire comes from the rock

1221. and consumes the whole thing

  1222. and it's like a whoa moment

  1223. and then Gideon

  1224. who has both

  1225. within his heart

  1226. and his mind

  1227. is both a worshipper

  1228. of Baal

  1229. and Baal

  1230. and the Asherah

  1231. but he also knows

  1232. things about the Lord

1233. and so he now worries

1234. that he's going to die

  1235. because he's seen

1236. the Lord face to face

1237. and the Lord speaks to him

1238. and says you're not going to die

1239. and so Gideon is relieved

  1240. and makes an altar

1241. saying the Lord is peace

1242. and then the Lord says to him

1243. you need to go to your father's house

  1244. and then we discover

  1245. that his father

  1246. is the custodian

  1247. and the sponsor

  1248. and the patron

1249. of the worship of Baal

  1250. and Asherah

  1251. in that region

1252. and he says to Gideon

1253. you've got to go Gideon

1254. and what I want you to do

1255. and what I want you to do

1256. is I'd like you to

1257. because you're just worshipping me

  1258. there's no other gods

  1259. I want you to

  1260. go and tear down

  1261. the altar to Baal

  1262. tear down the Asherah

  1263. kill a bull

  1264. and significant

1265. because bull is the way

  1266. the Baal is imaged

1267. the image of the Baal

  1268. is a bull

1269. and so I want you

  1270. to take a bull

1271. and after you've cut down

  1272. the Asherah pole

  1273. and destroyed the altar

1274. on top of the fortress

  1275. that helps to protect

  1276. the gods

  1277. and the goddesses

1278. I want you to make

  1279. the Lord's altar

1280. and I want you to

  1281. using the wood

  1282. from the Asherah pole

  1283. I want you to

  1284. sacrifice the bull

1285. but you sacrifice it to me

  1286. and Gideon does it

  1287. but he's afraid

1288. he does it in the middle

  1289. of the night

  1290. and the next morning

  1291. people come up

1292. they see that the altar

  1293. is destroyed

1294. they see that the Asherah pole

  1295. is gone

1296. they see that the bull

1297. has been all cut up

  1298. they do an inquiry

1299. and the result of the inquiry

  1300. is that they go

  1301. to Gideon's father

  1302. because he's still

  1303. under the head

  1304. of the family

1305. and they say to him

  1306. Gideon has to die

  1307. and even though

1308. the dad is the patron

  1309. of Baal

  1310. and the patron

  1311. of the Asherah

1312. the fact of the matter

  1313. is he's not going

  1314. to let his boy

  1315. die over this

  1316. I mean it's his boy

  1317. idols are one thing

  1318. your kid is another

  1319. right

  1320. so he says

1321. if you could skip ahead

  1322. to I think it's verse 31

1323. that would be very helpful

  1324. there you go

  1325. but Joash said

  1326. but Joash said

  1327. where we are

  1328. my own bible

  1329. but Joash said

  1330. to all who stood

  1331. against him

  1332. will you contend

  1333. for Baal

1334. or will you save him

  1335. whoever contends

  1336. for him

1337. shall be put to death

  1338. by morning

1339. if he is a god

  1340. let him contend

  1341. for himself

  1342. because his altar

  1343. has been broken

  1344. therefore on that day

  1345. Gideon was called

  1346. Jeroboam

  1347. that is to say

  1348. let Baal

  1349. contend against him

  1350. because he broke

  1351. down his altar

  1352. I need to wrap

  1353. it all up

  1354. let me see here

  1355. oh back there

  1356. here's the thing

  1357. about idols

  1358. and of course

  1359. power is one

  1360. of the main idols

  1361. that we all face

  1362. power kills

  1363. to protect itself

  1364. love will die

  1365. for the beloved

  1366. one of the things

  1367. that struck me

  1368. when I was reading

  1369. this story

  1370. about Joash's

  1371. speech to the people

  1372. is he puts out

  1373. this very very

  1374. very stark

  1375. challenge

1376. if Baal is a god

  1377. he can defend himself

  1378. now what struck me

  1379. the first time

1380. I read this this week

  1381. and I don't know

  1382. if it struck any

  1383. of you

  1384. is that something

  1385. very similar

  1386. happens in the

  1387. gospels

  1388. what do three

  1389. of the gospels

  1390. record

  1391. that Jesus

  1392. is hanging

  1393. on the cross

  1394. and

  1395. he's all bloody

  1396. he's been

  1397. completely and utterly

  1398. whipped

  1399. he's surrounded

  1400. by soldiers

  1401. he's hanging

  1402. on the cross

  1403. he's dying

  1404. a criminal's death

  1405. and all the leaders

  1406. the intellectuals

  1407. the religious

  1408. the spiritual

  1409. types

  1410. the cultural

  1411. influencers

  1412. they all say

  1413. he saves

  1414. others

  1415. let him save

  1416. himself

  1417. come down

  1418. from the cross

  1419. show us that you

  1420. can save yourself

  1421. if you are God

  1422. if you are the

  1423. savior

  1424. now Jesus

  1425. doesn't come down

  1426. from the cross

1427. he stays on the cross

  1428. and he dies

  1429. but we understand

  1430. that

  1431. not to be a

  1432. defeat of

  1433. Jesus

  1434. but to in fact

  1435. be his victory

  1436. a victory

  1437. which matters

  1438. to us

  1439. and we only

  1440. begin to

  1441. understand it

  1442. if we understand

  1443. that God is

  1444. love

  1445. that the triune

  1446. God is love

  1447. from all

  1448. eternity

  1449. the father

  1450. is love

  1451. the son

  1452. and the son

  1453. is love

  1454. the father

  1455. and the father

  1456. desires to have

  1457. ordinary people

  1458. like you and me

  1459. know him

  1460. so that we

  1461. will love him

  1462. and experience

  1463. his love

  1464. and we can

  1465. love him

  1466. not because

  1467. he needs love

  1468. he has the

  1469. love of the son

  1470. and the holy

  1471. spirit from all

  1472. eternity

  1473. but it is the

  1474. nature of love

  1475. to love

  1476. and to receive

  1477. love

  1478. and to give

  1479. and to be good

  1480. and it's the

  1481. very nature

  1482. of power

  1483. to sacrifice

  1484. others

  1485. so that no

  1486. power is lost

  1487. and so for

  1488. Baal

  1489. who's all about

  1490. power

  1491. for him not

  1492. to defend

  1493. himself

  1494. is in fact

  1495. an indictment

  1496. against him

  1497. but

  1498. the cultural

  1499. leaders

  1500. and the influencers

  1501. and the intellectuals

  1502. and the religious

  1503. leaders

  1504. who at the end

  1505. of the day

  1506. do not know

  1507. that God is love

  1508. but worship power

  1509. for them

  1510. what they want

  1511. to see

  1512. is a display

  1513. of power

  1514. and they do not

  1515. know

  1516. that they know

  1517. that if power

  1518. is real

  1519. that power

  1520. will act

  1521. to defend

  1522. itself

  1523. but they do

  1524. not understand

  1525. that if love

  1526. is real

  1527. love will die

  1528. for the beloved

  1529. many of you

  1530. heard the story

  1531. I'm just going

  1532. to tell part

  1533. of it right

  1534. now

  1535. my wife

  1536. and six

  1537. or seven

  1538. of my kids

  1539. at the time

  1540. were in a house

  1541. fire

  1542. caught on the

  1543. second floor

  1544. first floor

  1545. consumed with

  1546. flames

  1547. in the middle

  1548. of the night

  1549. Louise woke

  1550. up and she

  1551. woke up

  1552. the kids

  1553. and she woke

  1554. up her mom

  1555. and Louise

  1556. was able to

  1557. open a bathroom

  1558. window

  1559. which there

  1560. was enough room

  1561. about three feet

  1562. down into the

  1563. side

  1564. a shed

  1565. and I can tell

  1566. you right now

  1567. who was the

  1568. last one out

  1569. of the house

  1570. Louise

  1571. why

  1572. she opened

  1573. the window

  1574. she hands

  1575. the kids

  1576. out

  1577. she gets

  1578. the kids

  1579. out

  1580. and whenever

  1581. kid is out

  1582. she leaves

  1583. and if she

  1584. had died

  1585. not being able

  1586. to get all

  1587. of the kids

  1588. out

  1589. she would not

  1590. have viewed

  1591. herself as a

  1592. failure

  1593. because she

  1594. got all of

  1595. her kids

  1596. out

  1597. it's a nature

  1598. of love

  1599. to be willing

  1600. to die

  1601. idol

  1602. idol

  1603. worshipers

  1604. go to

  1605. great lengths

  1606. to save

  1607. their idols

  1608. but the

  1609. Lord went

  1610. to great lengths

  1611. to save

  1612. and deliver

  1613. you

  1614. think of

  1615. the lengths

  1616. that we

  1617. go

  1618. those of

  1619. us who

  1620. worship

  1621. beauty

  1622. the lengths

  1623. we go

  1624. as our

  1625. beauty

  1626. fades

  1627. I know

  1628. a woman

  1629. who asked

  1630. a doctor

  1631. to kill

  1632. her

  1633. because

  1634. she was

  1635. in

  1636. she'd

  1637. always

  1638. been

  1639. very

  1640. very

  1641. very

  1642. very

  1643. very

  1644. very

  1645. well

  1646. made

  1647. up

  1648. and

  1649. she

  1650. could

  1651. no

  1652. longer

  1653. look

  1654. beautiful

  1655. and she

  1656. wanted

  1657. to die

  1658. her idol

  1659. devoured

  1660. her

  1661. and we

  1662. worship

  1663. money

  1664. and the

  1665. money

  1666. starts

  1667. to fail

  1668. us

  1669. but we

  1670. don't

  1671. say

  1672. money

  1673. is

  1674. a

  1675. failure

  1676. no

  1677. we

  1678. save

  1679. it

  1680. we

  1681. say

  1682. no

  1683. no

  1684. no

  1685. no

  1686. the

  1687. market

  1688. will

  1689. correct

  1690. itself

  1691. it'll

  1692. work

  1693. it'll

  1694. work

  1695. it'll

  1696. work

  1697. it'll

  1698. work

  1699. and what

  1700. we see

  1701. throughout

  1702. this

  1703. entire

  1704. text

  1705. is that

  1706. God

  1707. comes

  1708. to

  1709. Gideon

  1710. when

  1711. Gideon

  1712. is still

  1713. worshipping

  1714. Baal

  1715. and Asherah

  1716. and here's

  1717. what we

  1718. learn in

  1719. the gospel

  1720. while you

  1721. were still

  1722. giving

  1723. yourself

  1724. to idols

  1725. Messiah

  1726. Jesus

  1727. died

  1728. for you

  1729. if you

  1730. go back

  1731. and read

  1732. the rest

  1733. of the

  1734. story

  1735. of Gideon

  1736. it's

  1737. after this

  1738. it even

  1739. always had

  1740. a remarkable

  1741. miracle

  1742. of the

  1743. equivalent

  1744. of how

  1745. many

  1746. bread

  1747. you

  1748. could

  1749. make

  1750. from

  1751. 22

  1752. pounds

  1753. of

  1754. flour

  1755. and a

  1756. whole

  1757. goat

  1758. and all

  1759. the

  1760. broth

  1761. all just

  1762. taken up

  1763. in fire

  1764. and the

  1765. Holy Spirit

  1766. comes upon

  1767. him

  1768. and he's

  1769. able

  1770. with the

  1771. Holy Spirit's

  1772. power

  1773. to rally

  1774. the people

  1775. of Israel

  1776. to fight

  1777. against

  1778. Midianites

  1779. and still

  1780. Gideon

  1781. can't believe

  1782. that God

  1783. has actually

  1784. spoken to him

  1785. and promised

  1786. to him

  1787. and so

  1788. there's the

  1789. famous story

  1790. of the

  1791. fleece

  1792. that could

  1793. you make

  1794. the fleece

  1795. wet

  1796. and the

  1797. ground dry

  1798. and then

  1799. God does

  1800. it and then

  1801. he says

  1802. oh just

  1803. one more

  1804. time

  1805. could you

  1806. make the

  1807. ground wet

  1808. and the

  1809. fleece

  1810. die

  1811. and the

  1812. problem

  1813. is that

  1814. that's not

  1815. a story

  1816. about seeking

  1817. God's

  1818. will

  1819. he already

  1820. knows

  1821. God's

  1822. will

  1823. God's

  1824. told him

  1825. time and

  1826. time and

  1827. time again

  1828. you're

  1829. going to

  1830. go fight

  1831. Midian and

  1832. I'm going

  1833. to destroy

  1834. them

  1835. he doesn't

  1836. need to

  1837. know

  1838. God's

  1839. will

  1840. he just

  1841. can't

  1842. believe

  1843. that God's

  1844. word

  1845. is true

  1846. you see

  1847. the more

  1848. an idol

  1849. grips your

  1850. heart

  1851. the harder

  1852. it is to

  1853. believe

  1854. that the

  1855. Lord keeps

  1856. his word

  1857. friends

  1858. gathering

  1859. together on

  1860. the Lord's

  1861. day to

  1862. worship

  1863. together

  1864. is a

  1865. chance for

  1866. us to

  1867. say Lord

  1868. those idols

  1869. have gotten

  1870. really powerful

  1871. in my heart

  1872. this week

  1873. and I

  1874. have a hard

  1875. time believing

  1876. you keep

  1877. your word

  1878. and it's a

  1879. time for us

  1880. to remember

  1881. the gospel

  1882. because the

  1883. Lord has

  1884. given us

  1885. something far

  1886. better than

  1887. a fleece

  1888. he's given

  1889. us

  1890. Jesus

  1891. dying

  1892. on a

  1893. cross

  1894. and he's

  1895. given us

  1896. the resurrection

  1897. and it's

  1898. time for us

  1899. to come

  1900. and remind

  1901. of the

  1902. gospel

  1903. we have

  1904. the Lord's

  1905. supper

  1906. what do

  1907. we remember

  1908. the new

  1909. covenant

  1910. the fact

  1911. that he

  1912. died

  1913. for us

  1914. and it's

  1915. time for

  1916. us to

  1917. once again

  1918. come back

  1919. and reset

  1920. and say

  1921. Lord I

  1922. so need

  1923. to remember

  1924. what you

  1925. did for

  1926. me

  1927. on the

  1928. cross

  1929. that while

  1930. I still

  1931. worship

  1932. idols

  1933. and I

  1934. was not

  1935. even

  1936. thinking of

  1937. you

  1938. you died

  1939. for me

  1940. knowing

  1941. the depth

  1942. that idols

  1943. have on my

  1944. heart

  1945. you died

  1946. for me

  1947. and you

  1948. died for me

  1949. knowing that

  1950. even today

  1951. even after I've

  1952. come to a

  1953. faith in you

  1954. how powerful it

  1955. is for me to

  1956. return to the

  1957. idols of money

  1958. or sex

  1959. or of race

  1960. or of ethnicity

  1961. or of politics

  1962. or of ideology

  1963. or myself

  1964. or my family

  1965. or my house

  1966. or my car

  1967. or my looks

  1968. or whatever it is

  1969. that I give my

  1970. heart to time

  1971. and time

  1972. and time again

  1973. and you

  1974. knew

  1975. all of that

  1976. and still

  1977. you died

  1978. for me

  1979. still

  1980. you died

  1981. for me

  1982. not weighing

  1983. my

  1984. my wonders

  1985. but pardoning

  1986. my offenses

  1987. not

  1988. knowing how

  1989. religious and

  1990. spiritual and

  1991. pure I am

  1992. but knowing

  1993. how far I am

  1994. for that

  1995. still you

  1996. died for

  1997. me

  1998. and so

  1999. we are

  2000. gathered

  2001. to call out

  2002. to the Lord

  2003. to say

  2004. Lord take

  2005. those idols

  2006. from my

  2007. heart

  2008. because those

  2009. idols get

  2010. close to my

  2011. heart

  2012. your word

  2013. seems

  2014. untrue

  2015. invite you

  2016. to stand

  2017. just bow our

  2018. heads in

  2019. prayer

  2020. Father

  2021. we thank you

  2022. so much

  2023. that you

  2024. call us

  2025. to gather

  2026. once a week

  2027. on the

  2028. Lord's

  2029. day

  2030. to

  2031. celebrate

  2032. the Lord's

  2033. supper

  2034. to remember

  2035. Jesus

  2036. and what

  2037. he did

  2038. for us

  2039. on the

  2040. cross

  2041. until he

  2042. returns

  2043. that we

  2044. get to

  2045. read your

  2046. word

  2047. and be

  2048. reminded of

  2049. the gospel

  2050. that you

  2051. are the

  2052. God

  2053. Father

  2054. who

  2055. delivered

  2056. your

  2057. people

  2058. who's

  2059. delivered

  2060. us

  2061. who are

  2062. your

  2063. people

  2064. who reveals

  2065. yourself

  2066. to us

  2067. idol

  2068. worshipers

  2069. like

  2070. ourselves

  2071. and we

  2072. ask

  2073. Father

  2074. that the

  2075. Holy

  2076. Spirit

  2077. would

  2078. both

  2079. grip us

  2080. with the

  2081. gospel

  2082. if there

  2083. are any

  2084. here

  2085. Father

  2086. who have

  2087. not yet

  2088. come to

  2089. know

  2090. Jesus

  2091. as Savior

  2092. and Lord

  2093. may the

  2094. Holy

  2095. Spirit

  2096. Father

  2097. move

  2098. in their

  2099. lives

  2100. that they

  2101. might call

  2102. out to

  2103. you

  2104. and say

  2105. Jesus

  2106. be my

  2107. Savior

  2108. deliver me

  2109. from my

  2110. idols

  2111. be my

  2112. Savior

  2113. and Lord

  2114. forever

  2115. thank you

  2116. Lord

  2117. that you

  2118. keep your

  2119. word

  2120. and you

  2121. will come

  2122. and take

  2123. that man

  2124. or woman

  2125. to yourself

  2126. and Father

  2127. for us

  2128. you know

  2129. the idols

  2130. that are so

  2131. close to

  2132. our heart

  2133. that make

  2134. you seem

  2135. distant

  2136. and your

  2137. word

  2138. seem

  2139. not

  2140. powerful

  2141. and true

  2142. and we

  2143. ask

  2144. once again

  2145. Father

  2146. that your

  2147. Holy Spirit

  2148. would both

  2149. grip us

  2150. with who

  2151. Jesus is

  2152. and what

  2153. he did

  2154. for us

  2155. on the

  2156. cross

  2157. but that

  2158. you would

  2159. help us

  2160. Father

  2161. to turn

  2162. from idols

  2163. to turn

  2164. from idols

  2165. to you

  2166. and we

  2167. thank you

  2168. Father

  2169. that where

  2170. you are

  2171. there is

  2172. freedom

  2173. that where

  2174. you are

  2175. there is

  2176. love

  2177. where you

  2178. are

  2179. there is

  2180. goodness

  2181. where you

  2182. are

  2183. there is

  2184. truth

  2185. Father

  2186. make us

  2187. people of

  2188. truth

  2189. of justice

  2190. of lovers

  2191. of the

  2192. good

  2193. and of

  2194. beauty

  2195. lovers

  2196. of you

  2197. and all

  2198. God's

  2199. people said

  2200. Amen
