  1. Now let's turn in our Bibles to Ecclesiastes chapter 2 and we're going to read from verse 12 to verse 26.

    Ecclesiastes 2 chapter mention

  2. And today we're going to think about how the teacher of Ecclesiastes helps us to begin to topple some of our idols.

  3. So Ecclesiastes chapter 2 and at verse 12.

    Ecclesiastes 2 chapter mention

  4. Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom and also madness and folly.

  5. What more can the king's successor do than what has already been done?

  6. I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.

  7. The wise have eyes in their heads while the fool walks in the darkness.

  8. But I came to realize that the same fate overtakes them both.

  9. Then I said to myself, the fate of the fool will also overtake me.

  10. What then do I gain by being wise?

  11. I said to myself, this too is meaningless.

  12. For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered.

  13. The days have already come when both have been forgotten.

  14. Like the fool, the wise too must die.

  15. So I hated life.

  16. Because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me.

  17. All of it is meaningless.

  18. A chasing after the wind.

  19. I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun.

  20. Because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.

  21. And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish.

  22. Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil,

  23. into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun.

  24. This too is meaningless.

  25. So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.

  26. For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge, and skill.

  27. And then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it.

  28. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune.

  29. What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun?

  30. All their days their work is grief and pain.

  31. Even at night their minds do not rest.

  32. This too is meaningless.

  33. A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil.

  34. This too, I see, is from the hand of God.

  35. For without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?

  36. To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and happiness.

  37. But to the sinner, he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth

  38. to hand it over to the one who pleases God.

  39. This too is meaningless.

  40. A chasing after the wind.

  41. Amen.

  42. I wonder if we are familiar with the idea of achievement addiction.

  43. I was reading a short article from an employment counselor this week,

  44. and she was talking about that idea,

  45. and she was arguing that achievement is the alcohol of our time.

  46. So she works with high-level business folks,

  47. and she says these days the best people don't abuse alcohol,

  48. they abuse their lives.

  49. Everything else is sacrificed for the sake of achievement

  50. in their particular field.

  51. And again, she argued that an achievement addict

  52. is no different from any other kind of addict.

  53. And so how this looks in business and in the workplace

  54. is that you find people,

  55. and perhaps we recognize this in ourselves,

  56. we're living for the high of a completed project or a big sale,

  57. and you can live off that for a while,

  58. but after a time, that feeling wears off,

  59. and what happens, you're chasing after it again,

  60. but not just the same level.

  61. You want something bigger, something more significant.

  62. An achievement addict is no different from any other kind of addict.

  63. Two realms where this achievement addiction can be a big issue

  64. are addressed here by our teacher.

  65. Education and employment.

  66. In our city of Edinburgh,

  67. education and employment,

  68. two avenues where people can look for their significance.

  69. And so it's good for us that, again,

  70. our teacher returns to focus on these two topics.

  71. Because wisdom and work

  72. can become idols to us.

  73. What do we mean when we talk about idols and idolatry?

  74. Well, if something provides our sense of security

  75. and satisfaction,

  76. and it's not God,

  77. then that thing has become an idol to us.

  78. If we are looking to our wisdom

  79. or our work to create a sense of pride,

  80. an inflated view of ourself,

  81. where we're thinking,

  82. well, I am somebody because I have this level,

  83. and we look down on others

  84. because they haven't reached that level,

  85. then our wisdom or our work is an idol to us.

  86. If when we measure our lives,

  87. we say,

  88. I am someone,

  89. I have value

  90. because of what I know or what I do,

  91. or the other way around,

  92. I have no significance

  93. and I have no value

  94. because I feel like my job is worth nothing,

  95. then, again,

  96. it's a sign that we're looking to

  97. something

  98. to give to us

  99. what God is

  100. only able to give.

  101. Our sense of identity

  102. and worth and significance

  103. are supposed to come from

  104. our relationship with God.

  105. And when we look to find our sense of self

  106. from a created thing,

  107. that has become

  108. an idol to us.

  109. So our teacher here,

  110. we've seen him,

  111. he's on a search for gain,

  112. he's on a search for

  113. ultimate happiness.

  114. In some ways,

  115. he sounds like that child

  116. who's always asking the question,

  117. but why,

  118. but why,

  119. but why?

  120. He returns again

  121. to wisdom

  122. and to work

  123. to ask the question,

  124. is that where we can find

  125. ultimate gain

  126. and significance?

  127. Or should we look

  128. somewhere else?

  129. as a wise king,

  130. he claims to give us

  131. the final word.

  132. And that final word

  133. that we have in this section

  134. is that since all worldly efforts

  135. are futile

  136. in giving eternal happiness,

  137. we should find our joy in God

  138. and in his everyday gifts.

  139. gifts.

  140. Let's see how he gets us there.

  141. Beginning with the reality

  142. that there is no gain

  143. from wisdom

  144. or folly.

  145. So this is the first section,

  146. verse 12

  147. to 16.

  148. He's returning

  149. in his thoughts

  150. to consider wisdom.

  151. He's already taken us there

  152. in chapter 1,

  153. verses 13

  154. and 17.

  155. Asking the question,

  156. can wisdom

  157. or can folly

  158. answer the search

  159. for something final,

  160. something absolute?

  161. Look at what he says

  162. in verse 12.

  163. He says,

  164. I turn my thoughts

  165. to consider wisdom

  166. and madness and folly.

  167. What more can the king's

  168. successor do

  169. than what has already

  170. been done?

  171. What's he trying to say there?

  172. He's trying to say,

  173. if anyone should know

  174. the answer to this,

  175. it's me.

  176. Because Solomon

  177. was a king

  178. who was famous

  179. for his wisdom.

  180. His wisdom was given

  181. to him by God.

  182. We know the queen

  183. of Sheba

  184. travelled many hundreds

  185. of miles

  186. because Solomon's wisdom

  187. was world famous.

  188. And as he searches

  189. deeply

  190. and as he probes

  191. these questions,

  192. he is confident

  193. that he is able

  194. to provide a better answer

  195. than anyone

  196. following him.

  197. And to help

  198. in this question

  199. of do wisdom

  200. or folly

  201. provide ultimate meaning,

  202. he takes two different

  203. points of view

  204. for us.

  205. One point of view,

  206. just daily life,

  207. a day in the life,

  208. but the other point of view

  209. is from a gravesite.

  210. So in verses 13 and 14,

  211. he's considering

  212. wisdom and folly

  213. from a relative

  214. point of view.

  215. And from that point of view,

  216. he can say,

  217. I saw that wisdom

  218. is better than folly,

  219. just as light

  220. is better

  221. than darkness.

  222. So wisdom

  223. is like light,

  224. folly

  225. is like darkness.

  226. It's better

  227. to have eyes

  228. that can see

  229. rather than be blind

  230. so that you are

  231. alert to danger

  232. so that you can choose

  233. the right direction.

  234. Moral instruction

  235. is good

  236. to listen to.

  237. King Solomon

  238. would tell us,

  239. relatively speaking,

  240. wisdom is better

  241. than folly.

  242. But then,

  243. ultimately,

  244. end of verse 14,

  245. I came to realize

  246. that the same fate

  247. overtakes them both.

  248. Verse 16,

  249. the wise,

  250. like the fool,

  251. will not be long remembered.

  252. The days have already come

  253. when both have been forgotten.

  254. Like the fool,

  255. the wise, too,

  256. must die.

  257. So when we think

  258. about our ultimate destiny

  259. and when we realize

  260. we all share

  261. that same fate,

  262. whether we are wise

  263. or foolish,

  264. in a worldly setting,

  265. when we will die

  266. and be forgotten,

  267. when you can't take

  268. wisdom with you

  269. or you can't use

  270. that wisdom

  271. you value

  272. in the grave,

  273. we can see why

  274. the teacher says,

  275. well, actually,

  276. in the end,

  277. it makes no difference.

  278. Death is like

  279. that trump card

  280. that's played over

  281. every pleasure,

  282. that's played over

  283. the value of wisdom.

  284. There was a minister

  285. by the name

  286. of Haddon Robinson

  287. who's also written

  288. a good few books

  289. and he spoke about

  290. conducting a funeral service

  291. for a man

  292. who had a working knowledge

  293. of 34 different languages

  294. when he died.

  295. Now, I don't know about you,

  296. but that, to me,

  297. seems mind-boggling.

  298. That is an incredible achievement,

  299. but

  300. no eternal game.

  301. We can be dazzled

  302. by wisdom

  303. and knowledge,

  304. but without God,

  305. it doesn't lead

  306. to eternal gain.

  307. In this search

  308. for happiness,

  309. death brings

  310. that sudden stop.

  311. And so,

  312. our teacher will say,

  313. wisdom is meaningless

  314. or vanity.

  315. It's like that morning mist.

  316. It's short-lived.

  317. You cannot hold on to it.

  318. And most of all,

  319. it cannot save us

  320. in the end.

  321. And so,

  322. the wisdom of our teacher

  323. makes us reflect.

  324. Am I basing

  325. my sense of self,

  326. my sense of security,

  327. on my knowledge

  328. and wisdom?

  329. Or does my hope

  330. lie in the fact

  331. that I know

  332. my God?

  333. Am I consuming

  334. the information

  335. and the knowledge

  336. of this age,

  337. but ignoring

  338. the wisdom

  339. of God?

  340. We have an invitation

  341. in our own lives

  342. to follow the example

  343. of this teacher,

  344. assess our lives

  345. on the basis

  346. of our day-to-day,

  347. think about the wisdom

  348. that we live by,

  349. but also

  350. go to the day

  351. of your death.

  352. Are we wise

  353. towards God?

  354. Do we know God?

  355. That's the only wisdom

  356. that counts in the end.

  357. So our teacher

  358. can say

  359. there's no gain

  360. from wisdom

  361. or folly.

  362. And then he turns

  363. in verse 17

  364. to 23

  365. to say there's no gain

  366. from work.

  367. Verse 17,

  368. So I hated life

  369. because the work

  370. that is done

  371. under the sun

  372. was grievous to me.

  373. All of it

  374. is meaningless.

  375. A chasing

  376. after the wind.

  377. So our teacher

  378. King,

  379. he knows

  380. the toil

  381. of work.

  382. Of course,

  383. his situation

  384. is different

  385. than ours,

  386. thoroughly different

  387. than ours.

  388. We do not exercise

  389. a kingly role.

  390. We are not

  391. controlling

  392. a nation.

  393. But he too

  394. in that

  395. elevated position

  396. felt the burden

  397. of work.

  398. The Bible

  399. teaches us

  400. that God

  401. gave

  402. to Adam

  403. and Eve

  404. to humanity

  405. work as a good

  406. gift.

  407. But since

  408. in Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  409. chapter 3

  410. we read about this

  411. Adam and Eve

  412. turned away

  413. from God

  414. and his word

  415. choosing

  416. their own path

  417. the earth

  418. was cursed.

  419. there were

  420. those thorns

  421. and thistles

  422. which means

  423. for us

  424. work comes

  425. with exhaustion

  426. and frustration.

  427. It comes

  428. with pain

  429. attached.

  430. So we were

  431. made for it

  432. but now

  433. it's been

  434. spoiled

  435. by the fall.

  436. And so

  437. our teacher

  438. who knows

  439. that

  440. then leads

  441. us to the

  442. conclusion

  443. well in that

  444. case work

  445. is the wrong

  446. place to look

  447. for your

  448. ultimate sense

  449. of meaning

  450. and significance.

  451. And again

  452. because it's

  453. all done

  454. under the sun.

  455. Verse 18

  456. I hated

  457. all the

  458. things

  459. I had

  460. toiled

  461. for

  462. under

  463. the sun

  464. because I

  465. must leave

  466. them to the

  467. one who

  468. comes after

  469. me.

  470. That under

  471. the sun

  472. repetition

  473. in Ecclesiastes

  474. becomes something

  475. of a time

  476. marker

  477. reminding us

  478. of eternity

  479. beyond death.

  480. So again

  481. to help us

  482. to follow

  483. his conclusion

  484. he considers

  485. both working

  486. life

  487. and the

  488. end of

  489. life

  490. in these

  491. few verses.

  492. We'll think

  493. about

  494. first of all

  495. how he speaks

  496. about the

  497. nine to five

  498. in verses

  499. 22 and

  500. 23.

  501. What language

  502. does he use

  503. to describe

  504. work?

  505. Just listen

  506. to it again.

  507. What do

  508. people get

  509. for all

  510. the toil

  511. and anxious

  512. striving

  513. with which

  514. they labor

  515. under the sun?

  516. All their

  517. days their

  518. work is

  519. grief and

  520. pain.

  521. Even at

  522. night their

  523. minds do

  524. not rest.

  525. I wonder

  526. if we can

  527. relate to

  528. that.

  529. Maybe it's

  530. the anxiety

  531. of having

  532. an uncertain

  533. job future

  534. or uncertain

  535. finances.

  536. Perhaps we

  537. know in our

  538. workplace the

  539. pressure of

  540. being under

  541. staffed or

  542. under

  543. resourced for

  544. our role.

  545. Perhaps we

  546. have known

  547. grief and

  548. pain from

  549. our colleagues

  550. or grief and

  551. pain because

  552. we've been

  553. asked to do

  554. unethical

  555. things in

  556. the workplace.

  557. Have you

  558. found your

  559. work making

  560. it difficult

  561. for you to

  562. sleep?

  563. Your work

  564. making it

  565. difficult to

  566. leave it at

  567. the office so

  568. you come home

  569. and you're

  570. distracted and

  571. unable to

  572. fully engage

  573. with the

  574. people in

  575. your life

  576. because of

  577. the consuming

  578. burden of

  579. work.

  580. Our work is

  581. a gift from

  582. God and it

  583. causes us to

  584. groan.

  585. Both those

  586. things are

  587. true and

  588. both these are

  589. recognized by

  590. our teacher.

  591. So that's in the

  592. context of the

  593. nine to five but

  594. again he takes us

  595. to our destiny

  596. verses 18 to

  597. 21.

  598. From the point

  599. of view of the

  600. day of our

  601. death what does

  602. he say there?

  603. Verse 18

  604. again I hated

  605. all the things I

  606. toiled for under

  607. the sun because I

  608. must leave them to

  609. the one who comes

  610. after me and who

  611. knows whether that

  612. person will be

  613. wise or foolish.

  614. Just as we

  615. cannot take our

  616. possessions with us

  617. we cannot take our

  618. work with us it

  619. will at some

  620. point be handed

  621. over to somebody

  622. else and the

  623. other person may

  624. do a brilliant

  625. job of it or

  626. may wreck it

  627. all.

  628. And actually we

  629. just need to

  630. think about King

  631. Solomon's own

  632. life to realize

  633. this happening.

  634. So King

  635. Solomon would

  636. pass his

  637. kingdom on to

  638. his son

  639. Rehoboam and

  640. Rehoboam through

  641. his folly would

  642. lose ten of

  643. the twelve

  644. tribes.

  645. I think if we

  646. think even in

  647. terms of retirement

  648. we begin to get a

  649. glimpse into the

  650. wisdom of our

  651. teacher.

  652. For some

  653. retirement has

  654. already happened

  655. for others it's

  656. approaching.

  657. You come to

  658. retirement and you

  659. may get the gold

  660. watch, the nice

  661. pen, the lump

  662. sum payout.

  663. But there are

  664. lots of losses

  665. also.

  666. Someone else

  667. will come and

  668. will take over

  669. your work and

  670. they will likely

  671. change your

  672. systems.

  673. They will do

  674. things their own

  675. way.

  676. They will take

  677. over your desk,

  678. your office,

  679. they may take

  680. over your

  681. company.

  682. And that is for

  683. better or for

  684. worse.

  685. And either way

  686. we have no

  687. control over

  688. that.

  689. And that's just

  690. retirement.

  691. It's much more

  692. final when we

  693. think about our

  694. day.

  695. And so the

  696. teacher wants to

  697. remind us again

  698. of, in that

  699. sense, the curse

  700. associated worth

  701. with work.

  702. There is too

  703. much strain for

  704. too little

  705. gain.

  706. To help us to

  707. see that we

  708. need more than

  709. work to give

  710. us ultimate

  711. significance and

  712. happiness.

  713. As our

  714. teacher has

  715. been thinking

  716. about wisdom

  717. and folly

  718. has been

  719. thinking about

  720. work, did you

  721. notice in verse

  722. 17 and 18 the

  723. language of

  724. hate.

  725. A strong

  726. language, very

  727. striking language

  728. in the middle

  729. of this section.

  730. And what's

  731. happening there

  732. is that our

  733. teacher is

  734. hating what

  735. has become

  736. of Eden.

  737. The world

  738. as God

  739. intended it

  740. to be.

  741. This isn't

  742. cynicism or

  743. blind despair.

  744. This is the

  745. lament of a

  746. wise king.

  747. When he says

  748. in verse 17,

  749. so I hated

  750. life because

  751. the work that's

  752. done under the

  753. sun was grievous

  754. to me.

  755. This is an

  756. ache for the

  757. way in which

  758. the world is

  759. broken and for

  760. the way that

  761. that impacts us

  762. in so many

  763. ways.

  764. So let's just

  765. turn our minds

  766. for a moment

  767. back to the

  768. Garden of Eden

  769. to think about

  770. what wisdom

  771. and work

  772. looked like

  773. then.

  774. Wisdom in the

  775. Garden of Eden

  776. for Adam and

  777. Eve was knowing

  778. and enjoying

  779. life with

  780. their God.

  781. Gladly submitting

  782. to and

  783. obeying their

  784. God.

  785. Enjoying the

  786. privilege of

  787. being made in

  788. the image of

  789. God and

  790. ruling under

  791. God for

  792. him and

  793. enjoying his

  794. presence.

  795. And work in

  796. that setting

  797. was gift.

  798. And work in

  799. that setting

  800. was also an

  801. act of worship.

  802. It was duty

  803. but it was

  804. also delight.

  805. But here

  806. our teacher is

  807. coming from a

  808. different perspective.

  809. He's coming

  810. from the

  811. under the sun

  812. perspective.

  813. Coming from

  814. the imagine

  815. if you think

  816. there is no

  817. God and you

  818. live without

  819. God in your

  820. life perspective

  821. and then when

  822. you face death

  823. there's real

  824. sadness because

  825. of all these

  826. losses.

  827. All that we

  828. do not take

  829. with us.

  830. Losses because

  831. we are east

  832. of Eden.

  833. We've seen

  834. it a few

  835. times the

  836. sense of

  837. discontent

  838. that is

  839. present.

  840. To remind us

  841. again of

  842. chapter 3

  843. in verse 11.

  844. God has

  845. made everything

  846. beautiful in

  847. its time.

  848. He has also

  849. set eternity

  850. in the human

  851. heart yet no

  852. one can fathom

  853. what God has

  854. done from

  855. beginning to

  856. end.

  857. We are

  858. longing for,

  859. we are made

  860. for permanence

  861. and stability.

  862. But when we

  863. look for that

  864. sense of

  865. permanence and

  866. stability in

  867. what we know

  868. and in what

  869. we do we

  870. will only be

  871. disappointed.

  872. Death comes as

  873. the ultimate

  874. game over.

  875. And our

  876. teacher is

  877. trying to

  878. show us

  879. this.

  880. We strive

  881. for wisdom,

  882. we strive for

  883. work but they

  884. do not in

  885. the end

  886. save us.

  887. And so he

  888. wants to

  889. show that

  890. sense of

  891. discontent but

  892. he also

  893. wants to

  894. let God's

  895. light in.

  896. verses 24

  897. to 26.

  898. It's the

  899. first break

  900. in our

  901. book,

  902. first major

  903. section

  904. completed,

  905. first time

  906. the light

  907. of God

  908. really breaks

  909. in for

  910. us.

  911. Sometimes

  912. reading

  913. Ecclesiastes

  914. you can feel

  915. like you're

  916. in the

  917. darkness.

  918. I don't

  919. know if

  920. you've ever

  921. been caving

  922. or potholing

  923. but if you

  924. find yourself

  925. caving you

  926. will find

  927. yourself

  928. underground

  929. for hours

  930. at a time

  931. and confined

  932. spaces,

  933. it can be

  934. painful,

  935. it can be

  936. exhausting

  937. and after

  938. a while

  939. you're just

  940. desperate to

  941. see even

  942. just a

  943. glimpse of

  944. natural light

  945. well here

  946. is light

  947. in Ecclesiastes

  948. and why is

  949. there light

  950. all of a

  951. sudden?

  952. Because we're

  953. reminded of

  954. the reality

  955. of God

  956. because God

  957. is introduced

  958. because now

  959. we're being

  960. pointed away

  961. from these

  962. small idols

  963. of work and

  964. wisdom to

  965. the one

  966. true God

  967. now we're

  968. being directed

  969. beyond life

  970. just under

  971. the sun

  972. thinking on

  973. the horizontal

  974. to lift our

  975. eyes to

  976. remember the

  977. one who

  978. created and

  979. is above

  980. the sun

  981. and he's

  982. leading us

  983. to walk

  984. in the

  985. light of

  986. faith

  987. so as we

  988. look at this

  989. little section

  990. three wisdom

  991. choices

  992. to make

  993. in the light

  994. of this

  995. text

  996. one

  997. we are

  998. invited

  999. to choose

  1000. to enjoy

  1001. God's

  1002. ordinary

  1003. gifts

  1004. today

  1005. to live

  1006. for today

  1007. to enjoy

  1008. God's

  1009. gifts

  1010. today

  1011. verse 24

  1012. and verse

  1013. 25

  1014. a person

  1015. can do

  1016. nothing

  1017. better

  1018. than to

  1019. eat

  1020. and drink

  1021. and find

  1022. satisfaction

  1023. in their

  1024. own

  1025. toil

  1026. this too

  1027. I see

  1028. is from

  1029. the hand

  1030. of God

  1031. for without

  1032. him who

  1033. can eat

  1034. or find

  1035. enjoyment

  1036. work

  1037. is not

  1038. a God

  1039. to serve

  1040. but work

  1041. is a

  1042. gift from

  1043. God to

  1044. enjoy

  1045. so is

  1046. food

  1047. so is

  1048. drink

  1049. one

  1050. one of

  1051. the

  1052. American

  1053. presidents

  1054. Roosevelt

  1055. said

  1056. far and

  1057. away

  1058. the

  1059. best

  1060. prize

  1061. that

  1062. life

  1063. offers

  1064. is

  1065. the

  1066. chance

  1067. to

  1068. work

  1069. hard

  1070. at work

  1071. worth

  1072. doing

  1073. now as

  1074. Christians

  1075. we would

  1076. say that

  1077. the greatest

  1078. thing is to

  1079. know God

  1080. through faith

  1081. in Jesus

  1082. but we

  1083. recognize

  1084. that God

  1085. has given

  1086. work

  1087. as

  1088. a

  1089. gift

  1090. it's

  1091. important

  1092. that we

  1093. understand

  1094. why we

  1095. work

  1096. and how

  1097. we work

  1098. we're not

  1099. working to

  1100. establish a

  1101. sense of

  1102. self

  1103. we are not

  1104. invited to

  1105. work to

  1106. boost our

  1107. pride

  1108. we are not

  1109. invited to

  1110. work simply

  1111. to pay

  1112. our bills

  1113. rather

  1114. we work

  1115. with an

  1116. awareness

  1117. of God

  1118. we work

  1119. with a

  1120. sense of

  1121. thankfulness

  1122. that God

  1123. has given

  1124. me this

  1125. work

  1126. this task

  1127. to do

  1128. whether our

  1129. work is

  1130. paid or

  1131. unpaid

  1132. it is an

  1133. opportunity

  1134. for us

  1135. to be

  1136. faithful

  1137. to our

  1138. God

  1139. to be a

  1140. blessing

  1141. to others

  1142. in the

  1143. way that

  1144. we serve

  1145. and if

  1146. we're paid

  1147. in the

  1148. money that

  1149. we get

  1150. that we

  1151. can bless

  1152. others

  1153. God's

  1154. word gives

  1155. us a

  1156. new lens

  1157. through which

  1158. to view

  1159. our work

  1160. reminding

  1161. us that

  1162. we go

  1163. to work

  1164. with

  1165. God

  1166. and we

  1167. go to

  1168. work

  1169. for

  1170. God

  1171. I think

  1172. Paul put

  1173. it really

  1174. helpfully

  1175. in

  1176. Colossians

    Colossians 3:23

  1177. 3

  1178. verse 23

  1179. and 24

  1180. whatever

  1181. you do

  1182. work at

  1183. it with

  1184. all your

  1185. heart

  1186. as working

  1187. for the

  1188. Lord

  1189. not for

  1190. human

  1191. masters

  1192. since you

  1193. know that

  1194. you will

  1195. receive an

  1196. inheritance

  1197. from a

  1198. Lord as

  1199. a reward

  1200. it is a

  1201. Lord

  1202. Christ

  1203. you are

  1204. serving

  1205. so the

  1206. author

  1207. the teacher

  1208. of Ecclesiastes

  1209. says work

  1210. is a gift

  1211. food and

  1212. drink are

  1213. a gift

  1214. so practically

  1215. speaking I

  1216. imagine for

  1217. many of us

  1218. we we grew

  1219. up and we

  1220. practice the

  1221. saying of

  1222. grace before

  1223. our meals and

  1224. that's a good

  1225. thing it

  1226. reminds us

  1227. God gave us

  1228. these things

  1229. God gave us

  1230. the resources

  1231. to have

  1232. these things

  1233. do we

  1234. say grace

  1235. for our

  1236. work

  1237. too

  1238. do we

  1239. go to

  1240. our

  1241. workplaces

  1242. or do we

  1243. sit at

  1244. our desk

  1245. with a

  1246. sense of

  1247. thankfulness

  1248. for being

  1249. able to

  1250. serve God

  1251. and to

  1252. serve

  1253. others

  1254. in the

  1255. way that

  1256. he has

  1257. called

  1258. us to

  1259. we need

  1260. to choose

  1261. to enjoy

  1262. the everyday

  1263. gifts of

  1264. God

  1265. in the

  1266. way that

  1267. God

  1268. intended

  1269. and we

  1270. can go

  1271. wrong in

  1272. that

  1273. I enjoy

  1274. a game

  1275. of tennis

  1276. and I

  1277. enjoy

  1278. oranges

  1279. when you

  1280. think about

  1281. tennis and

  1282. oranges you're

  1283. supposed to

  1284. have them

  1285. as a

  1286. wee half

  1287. time

  1288. refreshment

  1289. but if you

  1290. choose to

  1291. make an

  1292. orange a

  1293. tennis ball

  1294. it will

  1295. not go

  1296. well

  1297. you will

  1298. end up

  1299. with a

  1300. mess

  1301. we are

  1302. supposed to

  1303. use God's

  1304. gifts

  1305. properly

  1306. not to

  1307. make them

  1308. into

  1309. God's

  1310. for us

  1311. food

  1312. and drink

  1313. and work

  1314. are good

  1315. gifts

  1316. and we

  1317. should take

  1318. real pleasure

  1319. in them

  1320. but the

  1321. problem for

  1322. us comes

  1323. that often

  1324. we hunger

  1325. for more

  1326. from them

  1327. than they

  1328. were ever

  1329. designed

  1330. to give

  1331. it's that

  1332. problem of

  1333. idolatry

  1334. that keeps

  1335. creeping

  1336. in

  1337. again to

  1338. help us

  1339. to remember

  1340. 1st

  1341. Corinthians

  1342. 10 31

  1343. whether you

  1344. eat or

  1345. drink or

  1346. whatever you

  1347. do

  1348. do it

  1349. all for

  1350. the glory

  1351. of

  1352. God

  1353. not

  1354. sell

  1355. now we

  1356. thought a

  1357. number of

  1358. times about

  1359. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  1360. 6 where

  1361. Jesus says

  1362. don't store

  1363. up treasures

  1364. on earth

  1365. but treasures

  1366. in heaven

  1367. for where your

  1368. treasure is

  1369. your heart

  1370. will be

  1371. also

  1372. have that

  1373. perspective

  1374. the wisdom

  1375. that we

  1376. find in

  1377. Ecclesiastes

  1378. holds two

  1379. realities

  1380. together

  1381. all of

  1382. life is

  1383. like a

  1384. mist

  1385. life is

  1386. short

  1387. compared to

  1388. eternity

  1389. and

  1390. even as we

  1391. recognize life

  1392. is like a

  1393. mist and

  1394. sometimes that's

  1395. really difficult

  1396. and confusing

  1397. joy is

  1398. possible

  1399. and good

  1400. as Dickens

  1401. would say

  1402. it is both

  1403. the best of

  1404. times

  1405. and the

  1406. worst of

  1407. times

  1408. second

  1409. wisdom

  1410. choice

  1411. choose

  1412. to honor

  1413. God

  1414. today

  1415. verse 26

  1416. to the

  1417. person who

  1418. pleases him

  1419. God gives

  1420. wisdom

  1421. knowledge

  1422. and happiness

  1423. but to the

  1424. sinner he gives

  1425. the task of

  1426. gathering and

  1427. storing up wealth

  1428. to hand it

  1429. over to the

  1430. one who

  1431. pleases God

  1432. there is the

  1433. contrast here of

  1434. the two ways

  1435. to live

  1436. person one

  1437. lives to

  1438. please God

  1439. chooses to

  1440. live under

  1441. the mercy

  1442. of God

  1443. chooses to

  1444. honor God

  1445. pleasing God

  1446. in faith

  1447. and trust

  1448. and worship

  1449. and enjoying

  1450. God's gift

  1451. and the

  1452. result

  1453. God gives

  1454. wisdom

  1455. knowledge

  1456. and happiness

  1457. that happiness

  1458. which is not

  1459. just temporary

  1460. but is

  1461. eternal

  1462. when we're in

  1463. right relationship

  1464. with God

  1465. but then there's

  1466. the other way

  1467. to live

  1468. the way of

  1469. the sinner

  1470. who chooses

  1471. to live

  1472. without God

  1473. God is not

  1474. the solid rock

  1475. that life

  1476. is built on

  1477. Jesus is not

  1478. the center

  1479. around which

  1480. our life

  1481. orbits

  1482. and the result

  1483. is loss

  1484. and no gain

  1485. just as Jesus

  1486. said in that

  1487. parable in Luke

  1488. 19

  1489. to everyone who

  1490. has more

  1491. will be given

  1492. but as for the

  1493. one who has

  1494. nothing even

  1495. what they have

  1496. will be taken

  1497. away

  1498. our teacher

  1499. reminds us

  1500. of total

  1501. loss

  1502. that we

  1503. might by

  1504. God's grace

  1505. topple those

  1506. idols that

  1507. would seek

  1508. to replace

  1509. God in

  1510. our hearts

  1511. so that we

  1512. would serve

  1513. and worship

  1514. him only

  1515. which takes

  1516. us to our

  1517. last piece

  1518. of wisdom

  1519. wisdom choice

  1520. three

  1521. choose to

  1522. rest in

  1523. the wisdom

  1524. and work

  1525. of Jesus

  1526. because ultimately

  1527. that's the one

  1528. work we all

  1529. need

  1530. it's the work

  1531. of Jesus

  1532. John chapter

  1533. four verse

  1534. thirty four

  1535. Jesus said

  1536. my food

  1537. is to do

  1538. the will

  1539. of him

  1540. who sent

  1541. me

  1542. and to

  1543. finish

  1544. his work

  1545. Jesus came

  1546. to do

  1547. the work

  1548. of God

  1549. Jesus came

  1550. to perform

  1551. the work

  1552. of the

  1553. suffering

  1554. servant

  1555. read the

  1556. gospels

  1557. and you

  1558. discover

  1559. Jesus

  1560. toiling

  1561. under the

  1562. sun

  1563. you discover

  1564. Jesus tears

  1565. under the

  1566. sun

  1567. as he

  1568. came to

  1569. a world

  1570. of poverty

  1571. as he

  1572. was not

  1573. believed in

  1574. by many

  1575. as he was

  1576. rejected

  1577. by many

  1578. as ultimately

  1579. he would go

  1580. to the cross

  1581. to be punished

  1582. for us

  1583. to be pierced

  1584. for our

  1585. transgressions

  1586. to be crushed

  1587. for our

  1588. iniquities

  1589. that his

  1590. father made

  1591. him a sin

  1592. offering

  1593. that was his

  1594. work

  1595. the work

  1596. that he

  1597. completed

  1598. those

  1599. toil

  1600. toils

  1601. and tears

  1602. of Jesus

  1603. would then

  1604. on the third

  1605. day give way

  1606. to triumph

  1607. in his

  1608. resurrection

  1609. the work

  1610. of Jesus

  1611. the work

  1612. of salvation

  1613. is a

  1614. completed

  1615. work

  1616. and because

  1617. of that

  1618. Jesus says

  1619. there's only

  1620. one work

  1621. that we

  1622. need

  1623. the one

  1624. work

  1625. that we

  1626. need

  1627. is to

  1628. believe

  1629. in Jesus

  1630. to have

  1631. our faith

  1632. in Jesus

  1633. to ask

  1634. him to

  1635. forgive

  1636. our sin

  1637. to be

  1638. our Lord

  1639. and Savior

  1640. the one

  1641. wisdom

  1642. we need

  1643. is the

  1644. wisdom

  1645. of God

  1646. who is

  1647. Jesus

  1648. 1 Corinthians

  1649. 1 and 2

  1650. Paul is

  1651. full of

  1652. that language

  1653. he says

  1654. that Jesus

  1655. is for

  1656. us

  1657. wisdom

  1658. from God

  1659. that is

  1660. our

  1661. righteousness

  1662. holiness

  1663. and

  1664. redemption

  1665. Jesus

  1666. Christ

  1667. crucified

  1668. is

  1669. God's

  1670. wisdom

  1671. for

  1672. our

  1673. salvation

  1674. it's not

  1675. the wisdom

  1676. of the

  1677. world

  1678. but it's

  1679. the wisdom

  1680. of God

  1681. the only

  1682. way for

  1683. us to

  1684. be saved

  1685. and knowing

  1686. that truth

  1687. knowing

  1688. this

  1689. Jesus

  1690. that's

  1691. what

  1692. frees

  1693. our

  1694. hearts

  1695. from

  1696. captivity

  1697. to

  1698. those

  1699. idols

  1700. where

  1701. we're

  1702. not

  1703. thinking

  1704. that

  1705. our

  1706. wisdom

  1707. and

  1708. our

  1709. work

  1710. is

  1711. all

  1712. that

  1713. we

  1714. need

  1715. it's

  1716. knowing

  1717. Jesus

  1718. and

  1719. his

  1720. finished

  1721. work

  1722. and

  1723. the

  1724. wisdom

  1725. of

  1726. God

  1727. that's

  1728. what

  1729. gives

  1730. us

  1731. the

  1732. lasting

  1733. eternal

  1734. happiness

  1735. that we're

  1736. seeking

  1737. so the

  1738. teacher in

  1739. Ecclesiastes

  1740. he's trying to

  1741. help rescue

  1742. us from

  1743. an achievement

  1744. addiction

  1745. which we can

  1746. all suffer

  1747. from

  1748. thinking that

  1749. our meaning

  1750. significance

  1751. and worth

  1752. comes from

  1753. what we

  1754. know

  1755. or what

  1756. we do

  1757. he says

  1758. to us

  1759. remember

  1760. that doesn't

  1761. last

  1762. and it

  1763. doesn't

  1764. save

  1765. and we're

  1766. invited in

  1767. God's

  1768. word to

  1769. look instead

  1770. to Jesus

  1771. the great

  1772. teacher

  1773. to his

  1774. great

  1775. work

  1776. his

  1777. great

  1778. wisdom

  1779. to

  1780. trust

  1781. in

  1782. his

  1783. achievement

  1784. and

  1785. bringing

  1786. salvation

  1787. and

  1788. eternal

  1789. life

  1790. understanding

  1791. that

  1792. is the

  1793. only

  1794. place

  1795. it's

  1796. the

  1797. right

  1798. place

  1799. and the

  1800. only

  1801. place

  1802. to

  1803. find

  1804. our

  1805. identity

  1806. so

  1807. let's

  1808. pray

  1809. in

  1810. light

  1811. of

  1812. that

  1813. Lord

  1814. God

  1815. we

  1816. recognize

  1817. how

  1818. easy

  1819. it is

  1820. to want

  1821. to build

  1822. our life

  1823. on what

  1824. we know

  1825. or what

  1826. we do

  1827. that we

  1828. can

  1829. find

  1830. our sense

  1831. of value

  1832. and self

  1833. worth

  1834. from our

  1835. degrees

  1836. or from

  1837. our

  1838. job

  1839. from our

  1840. responsibilities

  1841. Lord help

  1842. us to

  1843. understand

  1844. that while

  1845. those are

  1846. good things

  1847. they are not

  1848. ultimate

  1849. things

  1850. help us

  1851. to live

  1852. in light

  1853. of our

  1854. own

  1855. death

  1856. and in

  1857. light

  1858. of

  1859. eternity

  1860. and help

  1861. us to

  1862. trust in

  1863. and rest

  1864. in the

  1865. work

  1866. and the

  1867. wisdom

  1868. of the

  1869. Lord

  1870. Jesus

  1871. that we

  1872. be so

  1873. grateful

  1874. that on

  1875. the cross

  1876. he cried

  1877. out

  1878. it is

  1879. finished

  1880. everything

  1881. necessary

  1882. for our

  1883. salvation

  1884. had been

  1885. done

  1886. and all

  1887. we need

  1888. to do

  1889. is to

  1890. ask him

  1891. to be

  1892. our

  1893. Lord

  1894. and

  1895. saviour

  1896. and so

  1897. we pray

  1898. that he'd

  1899. help each

  1900. one of

  1901. us

  1902. to be

  1903. looking

  1904. to

  1905. him

  1906. as

  1907. saviour

  1908. so

  1909. then we'd

  1910. be able

  1911. to

  1912. approach

  1913. each day

  1914. in the

  1915. right way

  1916. to enjoy

  1917. our food

  1918. and drink

  1919. and our

  1920. family

  1921. and our

  1922. work

  1923. as good

  1924. gifts

  1925. to be

  1926. thankful

  1927. and to

  1928. use

  1929. them

  1930. well

  1931. we pray

  1932. for your

  1933. wisdom

  1934. and your

  1935. help

  1936. and we

  1937. pray in

  1938. Jesus

  1939. name

  1940. amen

  1941. now we'll

  1942. finish

  1943. with

  1944. the hymn

  1945. that comes

  1946. from the

  1947. book of

  1948. revelation

  1949. but I

  1950. think in

  1951. many ways

  1952. helps us

  1953. to reflect

  1954. on some

  1955. of the

  1956. brokenness

  1957. that we

  1958. keep returning

  1959. to in

  1960. Ecclesiastes

  1961. is he

  1962. worthy

  1963. so let's

  1964. stand

  1965. and let's

  1966. sing

  1967. together

  1968. there

  1969. do
