  1. Father, we confess before you that we are far better at seeing sin in other people than seeing sin in ourselves.

  2. That we are far better at seeing evil motives and being cynical about others and very poor at seeing evil motives in ourselves.

  3. But at the same time, Father, we confess before you that we often seem to go between great pride and great despair when our proud pretensions get pricked.

  4. And so, Father, we are unstable and we give you thanks and praise that you have set it up, that your people gather once a week on your day to gather together and hear your word, to be recharged and recommitted as we hear the gospel and think about your word.

  5. And so, Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would very powerfully bring your word this morning home deep into our lives, that we might be disciples of Jesus who are gripped by the gospel, learning to live day by day for your great glory.

  6. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  7. Please be seated.

  8. Some of you, I don't know how many of you have heard of David Woods in Acts 17 Apologetics Ministries.

  9. I'd heard of him and some of you know as well, I actually spent several days, 10 days with him on a tour in Israel back in October and not just him but some other people.

  10. And I had never watched his video about his conversion.

  11. Everybody asked me on the tour, have you seen David Woods' conversion video?

  12. And I said, no, I haven't.

  13. So when I finally came back, I watched it.

  14. I was really struck by it.

  15. It just powerfully impacted me.

  16. And I think I've shared it with you.

  17. I told my family.

  18. But I've noticed something.

  19. I don't know how many of you have watched the video since I suggested, you know, Google David Woods' conversion video.

  20. But many people are deeply offended and troubled by the conversion video.

  21. Like deeply troubled and offended by it.

  22. And I've been thinking about that.

  23. I just had a conversation the other day about it by people who were worried about the man.

  24. Just, you know, full disclosure.

  25. And this fits very well with the book of Judges that we're looking at.

  26. Because the book of Judges, part of the problem we have when we read the book of Judges is that it's filled with violence and evil.

  27. Like today we're going to see a man who has sex with his slave, who murders and tortures people and produces a son who does even more murder and torture.

  28. I mean, just like your normal uplifting thought on a Sunday morning.

  29. But one of the things in the video is that part of the step of this fellow David Woods becoming a Christian is when he tries to hammer his father to death.

  30. I'll give you a warning up front about it.

  31. And I was thinking about, you know, why it is that I was so powerfully, I've never thought about hammering my father to death, by the way.

  32. But why was I so powerfully affected by it?

  33. And I think the reason was, is that I became a Christian in grade 12.

  34. Continued on with my high school.

  35. Went and did a degree in sociology and philosophy in graduate school.

  36. And, you know, to be honest, for about the next seven or eight years of my life, I would go through bouts of doubting the Christian faith and almost giving up on being a Christian.

  37. And for me, this is just saying something about me.

  38. I was never tempted by Buddhism or Hinduism.

  39. Never even for a moment was that a temptation to me.

  40. My great temptation has always been nihilism, nihilism, atheism.

  41. That's always been my thing.

  42. And part of that is, and I just, I mean, when I talk to atheists, I try to restrain myself with this.

  43. Because I actually think when somebody says they're an atheist, I said, no, you're not.

  44. You know, because if you're a real atheist, you're gripped by Dostoevsky's statement that if God is dead, all things are permissible.

  45. There is no meaning in life.

  46. There is no morality.

  47. There is no better or worse.

  48. All there is is power and appetite.

  49. Right.

  50. And I don't know what that says about me, but for me, for seven or eight years, I would go through seasons.

  51. I mean, I'm studying Marx.

  52. I'm studying Feuerbach.

  53. I'm studying Weber.

  54. I'm studying all of these.

  55. I'm studying Skinner.

  56. I'm studying all these people at school.

  57. I'm studying, you know, from a scientistic point of view and an atheistic point of view.

  58. And I'd go through these periods of deep doubt.

  59. And for me, the great temptation was that.

  60. Is that true?

  61. Am I wrong to be a Christian?

  62. And if I'm wrong to be a Christian, that is what I would believe.

  63. It would still be the case today.

  64. If I was to stop being a Christian, that is what I would believe.

  65. And that's what David Woods struggles with.

  66. And I think that's why.

  67. If any of you, if that's your temptation, then that's the video for you.

  68. If you can't even begin to understand why somebody would even think those things, don't bother watching it.

  69. It'll just offend you.

  70. But I mention all of this because one of the things, it's a common Christian problem and it's a common human problem.

  71. On one hand, there is a deep part of us that longs to arrive.

  72. And when we've arrived, then life will be easier.

  73. In Christian circles, it happens because we long that if we just had that miracle, if we just had that anointing,

  74. if we just had that powerful religious experience, and after that, life would be easier and life would be better.

  75. I wouldn't have these doubts.

  76. I wouldn't have these problems.

  77. I would have this certainty.

  78. Praise the Lord.

  79. I would walk in victory.

  80. And there's many churches that teach that.

  81. I grew up in a church that often taught that type of stuff.

  82. If you just have this one spiritual, emotional breakthrough, then life is easier.

  83. And we see it all around us in the world as well.

  84. On one hand, if I just meet the right person, if I can just marry the right person, if I can just get this degree,

  85. if I can just get this job, if I can just get this house,

  86. if I can just get these kids, if I can just learn this technique of how to deal with people,

  87. if I can just have this experience, if I can have this peak, then life will be easier.

  88. And on one hand, it's a very powerful desire and drive.

  89. And at the same time we have it, we doubt it.

  90. And in fact, often if we hear somebody else talking about this,

  91. in our hearts, we have a certain degree of despising of them

  92. because we think it's very naive.

  93. That's not how life works.

  94. But at the same time that we see that in others,

  95. we at ourselves, we always long,

  96. could there just be this moment,

  97. this relationship, this church,

  98. this fill in the blank,

  99. and then life will be better.

  100. We're going through the book of Judges.

  101. That's one of the things we do here at Church of the Messiah.

  102. You know, the Bible is 66 books.

  103. And other than Proverbs and maybe James and maybe 1 John,

  104. they all have a very, very particular order.

  105. They're written as books, and so we go through them as books.

  106. And we're getting up to chapter 8 and chapter 9 of Judges today.

  107. It's the longest text of Scripture I've ever tried to preach on in my life, 97 verses.

  108. It has caused me lots of prayer and anguish all week, I will be honest.

  109. And we've come to the story of Gideon.

  110. And often what happens when people tell the story of Gideon,

  111. they tell it in such a way that they think that by the end of the story of Gideon,

  112. he lives happily ever after.

  113. But that's, in fact, not how the story works.

  114. Like, unconsciously, we Christians tell the story or part of the story of Gideon

  115. as if it fits into this scenario.

  116. But that's literally not how the thing goes.

  117. If we were doing a Netflix of the series, limited series of the story of Gideon,

  118. there'd be at least three episodes, maybe four,

  119. depending on how you want it to break up chapter 8 and 9.

  120. Really, it should be together.

  121. But in chapter 6, and that's what we looked at a couple of weeks ago,

  122. for those of you who don't know what the story of Gideon is,

  123. it's a very, very powerful story.

  124. It's one that's historically, like, you know,

  125. I think to myself, you just watch the unfolding crisis in the Middle East,

  126. and every time you think it can't get worse, it seems to get worse.

  127. Hundreds of thousands of refugees trying to get into Turkey,

  128. banned by Turkey, attacked by Russia and Syria and others.

  129. And the story in chapter 6, 7, 8, and 9 of the book of Gideon

  130. is that there's been this people group called the Midianites and the Amalekites

  131. and their other different tribal allies.

  132. And for seven years, they come into Israel,

  133. and they don't try to take Israel over.

  134. They don't try to annex it or occupy it.

  135. All they do is they come in,

  136. they steal all the food and eat as much food as they can carry and consume.

  137. And then when they sort of load it up,

  138. what they do is they kill, they destroy all the other food.

  139. They try to destroy all the other food.

  140. For seven years, you have genocide.

  141. For seven years, you have what the Soviet Union tried to do

  142. and killed millions of people in the Ukraine

  143. by an artificial forced famine of stealing the food.

  144. All the while, while the smart people in the West

  145. were saying that the Soviet Union was a socialist, communist utopia,

  146. they were forcing, they were creating forced starvation of the Ukrainian people.

  147. And so this is what's going on in Midian,

  148. and Israel can't fight against them,

  149. and they're getting diminished and diminished and diminished.

  150. And God goes and calls Gideon,

  151. and if you look at chapter 6, in the course of chapter 6,

  152. there's two very remarkable miracles

  153. that finally convince Gideon

  154. that God is calling him to go and deal with this.

  155. The first miracle is where a large amount of food

  156. is just put on a dry rock,

  157. and the angel of the Lord representing God just touches it,

  158. and the whole thing gets consumed in fire and disappears.

  159. Just be honest, how many of us wouldn't love

  160. to have the odd miracle like that appear

  161. just to bolster our faith?

  162. Just be honest.

  163. And then the next one is the miracle around the fleeces.

  164. And then in chapter 7, it would be episode 2

  165. if we were doing a Netflix series about it,

  166. that Gideon has to actually go and fight the Midianites.

  167. And so he goes, the Spirit of God comes upon him,

  168. he goes and he gathers up the tribes,

  169. and he has 32,000 people who are going to go

  170. and march up to this battle.

  171. But in chapter 7, verse 2,

  172. the verse which is the key to understanding

  173. all four chapters, 6, 7, 8, and 9,

  174. is in chapter 7, verse 2.

  175. And God says to Gideon,

  176. I'm concerned that if all of those soldiers

  177. go and fight against Midian,

  178. that what will happen when I deliver,

  179. when I defeat the Midianites,

  180. you folks are going to boast over me.

  181. You're going to boast over me

  182. as if it's something that you accomplished.

  183. I'm concerned about that.

  184. So it's a famous story.

  185. So Gideon goes and tells people

  186. if they're afraid, you don't have to go.

  187. 22,000 people leave, leaving 10,000 soldiers.

  188. God says to Gideon, still too many people.

  189. And so then, you know,

  190. we know the famous thing about the water,

  191. and the point is there's only 300 guys

  192. left at the end of it,

  193. and then there's Gideon and 300 guys,

  194. and Gideon's still obviously afraid,

  195. and then God does another miracle,

  196. one which would have been very significant

  197. for a paganized man like Gideon,

  198. and that is that he has Gideon over here,

  199. the dream of an enemy,

  200. and how the enemy interprets the dream.

  201. And in the ancient culture,

  202. as in most of the world today,

  203. dreams can have unbelievable importance

  204. in terms of the gods speaking

  205. or gods speaking to a human being,

  206. and Gideon now really knows

  207. that God's going to do this,

  208. and there's the thing with the trumpets,

  209. et cetera, et cetera.

  210. The whole army of Midian is thrown into confusion.

  211. They fight each other.

  212. They kill each other.

  213. They scatter,

  214. and some of the Israelites come out of the mountains

  215. and chase some of them

  216. and hold the fords

  217. and kill many, many more,

  218. and that's how the story ends,

  219. and usually in Sunday school

  220. and in churches,

  221. you don't hear what happens next.

  222. You assume,

  223. and they all lived happily ever after.

  224. No.

  225. I don't have time to read all of chapter 8 and 9,

  226. but I'll just start to summarize

  227. what happens immediately after.

  228. Immediately after,

  229. a very powerful tribe

  230. that had been way up in the mountains

  231. where it was hard for the Midianites

  232. to go and fight them,

  233. they come and they've actually killed

  234. the two Midianite generals,

  235. and they come and confront Gideon

  236. and said,

  237. how come you didn't call us

  238. so we could go?

  239. What do they want to do?

  240. They basically say,

  241. we wanted to share in the glory of that victory.

  242. You robbed us of a chance to have glory.

  243. Now, Gideon, in the story,

  244. seems to give a very, very humble,

  245. et cetera, et cetera, you know, answer,

  246. but he's not humble.

  247. They're too powerful for him to deal with.

  248. In fact, one of the interesting things about this,

  249. it's a very, very common biblical lesson.

  250. Friends, how you treat very, very weak people

  251. shows you who you really are.

  252. If you meet somebody very powerful

  253. or very rich or very famous

  254. and you're nice to them,

  255. that doesn't show you who you are.

  256. It's when you meet somebody that nobody likes.

  257. If you're in an office or if you're in a school

  258. and there's the awkward, socially awkward,

  259. irritating person that absolutely nobody likes,

  260. and if you join in,

  261. that reveals what you really like.

  262. That reveals what you really like.

  263. Because we see this very next, after this,

  264. Gideon's going to try to kill

  265. the two kings of Midian that have escaped,

  266. and he comes up to a smaller city

  267. and asks for some help,

  268. and they won't give him any help.

  269. And he says, listen,

  270. when I come back successful,

  271. I'm going to torture all the leaders.

  272. And he goes to another little village

  273. that he could easily handle,

  274. and they don't give him any help as well.

  275. And he says, listen,

  276. when I come back victorious,

  277. I'm going to kill you all.

  278. I'm going to kill you all.

  279. And he gets the two kings,

  280. and he goes back,

  281. and he does torture, torture, torture,

  282. all of the elders of the first city.

  283. And he does murder all of the people

  284. of the second city.

  285. How many of you hear this in Sunday school?

  286. How many of you hear this

  287. in character studies of Gideon?

  288. And then you discover that the reason

  289. he went to capture the two kings

  290. wasn't because he was concerned

  291. for fulfilling God's will.

  292. It was a private quest for revenge

  293. because they had killed his brothers.

  294. And he actually tries to get

  295. his very young child

  296. to pick up a sword to kill them.

  297. But the child can't,

  298. so Gideon kills them.

  299. And now,

  300. we'll get to the part

  301. that we're going to read.

  302. Verse 22 of chapter 8.

  303. If you have your Bibles,

  304. you can follow along.

  305. Chapter 8, verse 22.

  306. And here's what happens.

  307. Then the men of Israel said to Gideon,

  308. because, you know,

  309. now obviously Midian's

  310. completely and utterly crushed.

  311. The men of Israel said to Gideon,

  312. rule over us,

  313. you and your son

  314. and your grandson also,

  315. for you have saved us

  316. from the hand of Midian.

  317. Don't say God did it.

  318. 300 huge army,

  319. but it's,

  320. Gideon's getting the credit.

  321. Now Gideon seems to give,

  322. in verse 23,

  323. a theologically precise

  324. and perfect response.

  325. And it is

  326. a theologically precise

  327. and perfect response.

  328. He says,

  329. I will not rule over you,

  330. and my son will not rule over you.

  331. The Lord will rule over you.

  332. And we're just going to stop here.

  333. Now, what happens now,

  334. we need to,

  335. I forgot to bring it.

  336. So just imagine for a second

  337. that I don't have a Bible here.

  338. This is like a fitness thing.

  339. I'm a fitness star,

  340. and I'm a YouTube influencer

  341. on fitness and on diet,

  342. and hundreds and hundreds

  343. of thousands of followers,

  344. and I'm now standing here

  345. talking to you.

  346. And I have a bowl here.

  347. And as I start to talk to you

  348. about what I,

  349. you know,

  350. my secrets

  351. and what I'm sharing with you,

  352. my secrets to success

  353. and perfect health,

  354. as I begin to talk to you,

  355. I open a bag

  356. of barbecue potato chips.

  357. Kettle.

  358. Southwest barbecue.

  359. Potato chips.

  360. The best tasting

  361. barbecue potato chips

  362. in the world.

  363. We'll have to make sure

  364. that's not on the,

  365. unless they want to

  366. give us an advertising dollars,

  367. Andrew.

  368. And I pour the bag

  369. of potato chips,

  370. the whole bag in there,

  371. and I have this bag.

  372. As I'm talking to you,

  373. eating potato chips,

  374. I say,

  375. I treat my body

  376. as a temple.

  377. Chomp, chomp, chomp.

  378. I never eat potato chips.

  379. Chomp, chomp, chomp.

  380. Potato chips are bad for you.

  381. You should never eat them.

  382. Chomp, chomp, chomp.

  383. I never have saturated fats.

  384. Chomp, chomp, chomp.

  385. They're going to cause you

  386. all these problems.

  387. Chomp, chomp, chomp.

  388. You get the picture.

  389. Chomp, chomp.

  390. So, Gideon says,

  391. Oh, I'm not going to rule.

  392. My sons aren't going to rule.

  393. Only the Lord will rule over you.

  394. And then look what happens

  395. in the very next verse.

  396. And Gideon said to them,

  397. verse 24,

  398. Let me make a request of you,

  399. every one of you,

  400. give me the earrings

  401. from his spoil.

  402. For they had golden earrings

  403. because they were Ishmaelites,

  404. the people that they defeated.

  405. And the people answered,

  406. We will willingly give them.

  407. And they spread a cloak

  408. and every man threw in it

  409. the earrings of his spoil.

  410. And the weight of the golden earrings

  411. that he requested

  412. were 1,700 shekels,

  413. about 20 kilos of gold.

  414. 20 kilos of gold.

  415. Because the crescent ornaments

  416. and the pendants

  417. and the purple garments

  418. worn by the kings of Midian.

  419. So, in other words,

  420. not only does he get 20 kilos of gold,

  421. he also gets some other ornaments.

  422. Earlier, I forgot to tell you,

  423. he takes the royal ornaments

  424. from the battle horses

  425. of the Midianite kings

  426. and he keeps them for himself.

  427. And then look at this.

  428. And he also takes

  429. the purple garments

  430. worn by the kings of Midian

  431. beside the collars

  432. that were around

  433. the necks of their camels.

  434. Now, we'll get to the next bit

  435. in a bit here.

  436. Now, just look at what happens.

  437. So he said,

  438. No, no, no, the Lord...

  439. So there's several things

  440. going on here.

  441. Imagine this.

  442. I hope I'm not offending

  443. anybody here.

  444. But I...

  445. And maybe afterwards

  446. you can just pray

  447. that, George,

  448. you're very cynical

  449. and you're lacking of faith.

  450. And I do know I lack faith.

  451. But when I see people saying

  452. there's going to be

  453. a miracle service

  454. at a certain time

  455. in a certain place,

  456. I think to myself,

  457. how on earth

  458. could you ever possibly know

  459. that God is going to do

  460. a miracle at that time?

  461. Like, I'm sorry,

  462. it just seems very presumptuous.

  463. Like, God does a miracle

  464. when he's going to do a miracle.

  465. How can you advertise

  466. in advance a miracle?

  467. I don't know.

  468. Like, I just find that presumptuous.

  469. But let's say,

  470. having preached on that,

  471. all of a sudden

  472. we hear some shots outside

  473. and some yelling

  474. and a guy comes walking in,

  475. stumbling in,

  476. and you can see

  477. three bullet holes

  478. in his chest,

  479. blood pouring out of it.

  480. And he comes

  481. and he falls,

  482. white-faced,

  483. right over there.

  484. We're all completely

  485. and utterly in shock.

  486. I run over

  487. and I pray,

  488. Lord,

  489. heal this man.

  490. Father,

  491. you can do this.

  492. We believe,

  493. you know,

  494. if you don't heal him,

  495. help him to be prepared

  496. to meet Jesus.

  497. But Father,

  498. we ask that you would

  499. heal this man.

  500. And in front of all

  501. of our eyes,

  502. the blood stops.

  503. The wounds are healed.

  504. Color returns to his face

  505. and he stands up

  506. and thanks me.

  507. Now,

  508. that would be a church service

  509. for the ages.

  510. But then imagine,

  511. I turn and say to you,

  512. folks,

  513. I'd like to pass the plate

  514. right now

  515. because I would really,

  516. I really,

  517. really,

  518. really would like

  519. a Porsche SUV.

  520. And it's not a donation

  521. to the church,

  522. it's a donation to me.

  523. You just saw the miracle

  524. I did,

  525. didn't you?

  526. So if you could just

  527. pass the plate,

  528. I want to keep passing

  529. and passing and passing

  530. until there's enough money

  531. in the plate

  532. for me to buy a Porsche SUV.

  533. I have a color in mind

  534. as well

  535. and I want all the features.

  536. Don't be cheap.

  537. Now you laugh,

  538. but that would be just

  539. so wrong

  540. and so offensive.

  541. Right?

  542. So here's Gideon,

  543. 300 men

  544. and I'm sure

  545. when they were holding

  546. the torches,

  547. they weren't holding them

  548. like this,

  549. they were holding them

  550. like this

  551. because their knees

  552. were going like this.

  553. And God does this

  554. remarkable thing

  555. and God does this

  556. whole miracle

  557. and then after God

  558. has done the whole miracle,

  559. Gideon asked for

  560. 20 pounds of gold

  561. and 20 kilos of gold.

  562. That's 44 pounds.

  563. That's a lot of gold.

  564. So,

  565. and it even gets worse.

  566. Look at what happens

  567. in 27 and 28.

  568. And Gideon made

  569. an ephod,

  570. ephod of it,

  571. some of the gold

  572. and put it in a city

  573. in Ophrah

  574. and all Israel

  575. hoared or prostituted

  576. themselves after it there

  577. and it became a snare

  578. to Gideon

  579. and to his family.

  580. So Midian was subdued

  581. before the people

  582. of Israel

  583. and they raised

  584. their heads no more

  585. and the land had rest

  586. for 40 years

  587. in the days of Gideon.

  588. So what he does

  589. as well is this.

  590. He makes an ephod

  591. and an ephod

  592. was something

  593. that was used

  594. in connection

  595. with worship.

  596. Only the high priest

  597. could wear it.

  598. It would be connected

  599. to going to the Ark

  600. of the Covenant

  601. and going into the tent

  602. and part of the ephod

  603. was that there was

  604. something right here

  605. that contained

  606. the umim

  607. and the thumim

  608. and in times of crisis

  609. in the context

  610. of worship of the Lord

  611. the high priest

  612. could take the umim

  613. and thumim

  614. and ask God

  615. to give them

  616. an answer and direction

  617. and that would be provided

  618. by God.

  619. And what Gideon has done

  620. is not in connection

  621. in fact in the original thing

  622. it's probably in connection

  623. to an idol

  624. that he made

  625. with some of the gold as well.

  626. And so what God

  627. what Gideon has done

  628. is said in connection

  629. with worshiping this idol

  630. I am going to have

  631. my own ephod

  632. and if you want God

  633. to speak to you

  634. if you want

  635. to hear what God

  636. has to say

  637. about your business deal

  638. your marriage

  639. your trip

  640. you come to me

  641. and I will use

  642. my ephod

  643. because I'm the one

  644. who had all these miracles

  645. happen to me

  646. and look at all the wonderful

  647. things I've done

  648. and you come to me

  649. to hear the voice of God.

  650. And needless to say

  651. it became

  652. a snare

  653. to the people.

  654. Now

  655. if you could put up

  656. the first point Andrew

  657. so one of the things

  658. we see in this text

  659. is success

  660. can be your downfall.

  661. It teaches you

  662. to boast over God

  663. and exalt yourself.

  664. success can be

  665. your downfall.

  666. It tempts you

  667. to boast over God

  668. and exalt yourself.

  669. Now let's be honest

  670. about this.

  671. If

  672. I got

  673. 300 people

  674. and

  675. there were

  676. 120 some odd

  677. thousand

  678. Soviet

  679. and Syrian

  680. and Iranian

  681. troops

  682. that were going to be

  683. coming against

  684. a particular place

  685. and I went off

  686. with 300 of you

  687. and not 300 of you here

  688. but our congregation

  689. a couple of others

  690. and the 300 of us

  691. go and God

  692. does a mighty miracle

  693. and the 120,000

  694. Russian, Syrian

  695. and Iranian

  696. troops

  697. are all defeated.

  698. I'd have a hard time

  699. not bringing that up

  700. in conversation

  701. occasionally.

  702. You know

  703. somebody's asking me

  704. for some advice

  705. and I'd say

  706. well it makes me

  707. think about that time

  708. when I defeated

  709. 120,000 Russians

  710. and Syrians

  711. and Iranians

  712. with 300 people.

  713. Did I tell you

  714. about the time?

  715. Maybe I'm the only one

  716. because I'm probably

  717. a worse sinner

  718. than most of you

  719. but it'd be pretty hard

  720. not to be tempted

  721. to do something like that

  722. on a regular basis.

  723. So regular

  724. you'd be sick

  725. and tired

  726. of hearing it.

  727. Now

  728. here's the thing

  729. that's going on

  730. in this text.

  731. Remember I said

  732. that we long

  733. for some type

  734. of experience

  735. that's going

  736. to just make

  737. things all right.

  738. Like many of us

  739. sort of wish

  740. that if God

  741. could just do

  742. a mighty miracle

  743. that we could see

  744. that would be

  745. undisputed

  746. that that would be

  747. fine.

  748. We would live

  749. with that.

  750. Life would be

  751. better after that.

  752. If only God

  753. would speak to us

  754. or communicate

  755. to us

  756. in a very powerful

  757. powerful

  758. unmistakeful way

  759. then that would

  760. be fine.

  761. If only God

  762. would do something

  763. just to vindicate

  764. us

  765. and to show

  766. that he's with us

  767. and if he could

  768. do it in a very

  769. very powerful way

  770. then life

  771. would be fine.

  772. But all of those

  773. things happen

  774. to Gideon

  775. and it hasn't

  776. changed his heart.

  777. in fact

  778. what is getting

  779. pointed at here

  780. and touched on

  781. here is something

  782. which is a very

  783. very very deep

  784. human problem

  785. and it's a deep

  786. human problem.

  787. It doesn't matter

  788. if you claim

  789. to practice

  790. Buddhism

  791. or Islam

  792. or you're an

  793. atheist

  794. or completely

  795. and utterly

  796. just indifferent

  797. to the whole

  798. topic

  799. that there's

  800. this very

  801. very very

  802. deep human

  803. bias

  804. and prejudice

  805. that makes it

  806. hard for us

  807. to imagine

  808. that

  809. if the universe

  810. is going

  811. in its proper

  812. direction

  813. or if

  814. God

  815. is going to

  816. work

  817. in a way

  818. that brings

  819. him glory

  820. then obviously

  821. it has to

  822. include me.

  823. Like it's

  824. impossible

  825. for God

  826. to be glorified

  827. and for me

  828. to do poorly

  829. because we

  830. have a very

  831. very hard

  832. time.

  833. we very

  834. very quickly

  835. blur the

  836. line between

  837. us

  838. I quickly

  839. blur the

  840. line between

  841. God and

  842. me

  843. upon God's

  844. glory and

  845. my glory

  846. God's success

  847. and my

  848. success

  849. my success

  850. and God's

  851. success

  852. it very very

  853. quickly comes

  854. that I

  855. blur those

  856. things

  857. things

  858. it's hard

  859. to imagine

  860. that I

  861. could take

  862. a stand

  863. for God

  864. or take

  865. a stand

  866. for justice

  867. and I

  868. don't get

  869. any recognition

  870. for it

  871. and I

  872. get fired

  873. and I

  874. end up

  875. having to

  876. be on

  877. welfare

  878. and I

  879. lose my

  880. house

  881. and I

  882. have to

  883. live in

  884. subsidized

  885. housing

  886. and we

  887. all in

  888. our culture

  889. think that

  890. that is a

  891. very very

  892. good argument

  893. that God

  894. doesn't exist

  895. that there's

  896. something wrong

  897. with the

  898. universe

  899. because it

  900. is just so

  901. deeply a part

  902. of our

  903. imagination

  904. that it is

  905. impossible for

  906. me to

  907. not have

  908. for the world

  909. not to be

  910. right and for

  911. me not to be

  912. able to have

  913. success

  914. but for me

  915. not

  916. it's just

  917. it's a deep

  918. thing in us

  919. I don't have

  920. time to read

  921. the rest of

  922. the story

  923. I want to

  924. unpack a

  925. couple of

  926. things but

  927. the thing

  928. if you go

  929. back and

  930. you read

  931. the book

  932. of chapter

  933. nine it

  934. even gets

  935. worse

  936. because you

  937. know it's a

  938. very very

  939. common thing

  940. in television

  941. and movies

  942. and stories

  943. the sin

  944. of the

  945. mother or

  946. the father

  947. the way

  948. that somebody

  949. has treated

  950. you and

  951. how that

  952. has consequences

  953. that go down

  954. for years

  955. and years

  956. and decades

  957. and decades

  958. afterwards

  959. and Gideon

  960. by the way

  961. one of his

  962. he ends up

  963. having many

  964. many wives

  965. he has a

  966. slave and he

  967. makes one of

  968. his slaves

  969. a concubine

  970. which means

  971. he can have

  972. sex with her

  973. and she has

  974. a kid

  975. and he names

  976. the kid

  977. my dad

  978. is king

  979. that's what

  980. Abimelech

  981. means

  982. my dad

  983. is king

  984. at the same

  985. times that he

  986. said he's

  987. not a king

  988. he names

  989. his kid

  990. my dad

  991. is king

  992. and Abimelech

  993. goes and

  994. seizes the

  995. kingdom

  996. he murders

  997. his brothers

  998. he ends

  999. up causing

  1000. he ends up

  1001. being

  1002. responsible

  1003. for the

  1004. murder

  1005. of whole

  1006. region

  1007. of Israel

  1008. and the

  1009. sins

  1010. of Gideon

  1011. and the

  1012. consequences

  1013. of Gideon's

  1014. life

  1015. and his

  1016. pride

  1017. and his

  1018. vanity

  1019. and his

  1020. arrogance

  1021. have

  1022. reverberations

  1023. throughout the

  1024. whole

  1025. about the

  1026. generation

  1027. that comes

  1028. even after

  1029. he's died

  1030. if you

  1031. could put up

  1032. the next

  1033. point

  1034. Andrew

  1035. just to

  1036. try to

  1037. bring this

  1038. home

  1039. you know

  1040. I said

  1041. that on

  1042. one hand

  1043. there's this

  1044. very very

  1045. powerful

  1046. sense

  1047. of us

  1048. as human

  1049. beings

  1050. that there

  1051. must be

  1052. some way

  1053. that we

  1054. can arrive

  1055. some way

  1056. that we

  1057. can turn

  1058. a corner

  1059. and our

  1060. life will

  1061. always be

  1062. better

  1063. whether

  1064. it's the

  1065. degree

  1066. the amount

  1067. of money

  1068. in the

  1069. bank

  1070. the academic

  1071. accomplishment

  1072. the artistic

  1073. accomplishment

  1074. the business

  1075. success

  1076. the marital

  1077. success

  1078. the success

  1079. in children

  1080. the success

  1081. in terms

  1082. of learning

  1083. how to

  1084. practice

  1085. mindfulness

  1086. so that we

  1087. can manage

  1088. our emotions

  1089. some other

  1090. technique

  1091. for managing

  1092. our emotions

  1093. some type

  1094. of yoga

  1095. breakthrough

  1096. so that we

  1097. have some

  1098. type of

  1099. ongoing

  1100. and merging

  1101. peace

  1102. and we

  1103. have this

  1104. very very

  1105. profound

  1106. sense in

  1107. so many

  1108. different ways

  1109. secular

  1110. and religious

  1111. and spiritual

  1112. and even

  1113. Christian

  1114. versions of

  1115. it

  1116. and we

  1117. have this

  1118. deep sense

  1119. that there

  1120. should be

  1121. something like

  1122. that but at the

  1123. same time we

  1124. know that that

  1125. is not true

  1126. and we make fun

  1127. of other people

  1128. who have their own

  1129. way of doing that

  1130. and we make fun

  1131. of them

  1132. and what the

  1133. story in

  1134. Judges is

  1135. teaching us

  1136. is this

  1137. if both

  1138. success and

  1139. failure keeps

  1140. you from the

  1141. triune God

  1142. then only he

  1143. can act to

  1144. save you

  1145. see that's what

  1146. happening in

  1147. the story

  1148. the story

  1149. is posing

  1150. riddles to

  1151. us

  1152. you think a

  1153. miracle will

  1154. change your

  1155. life

  1156. we'll do a

  1157. miracle of the

  1158. food

  1159. we'll do a

  1160. miracle of the

  1161. fleece

  1162. we'll do a

  1163. miracle of the

  1164. dream

  1165. we'll do a

  1166. miracle of the

  1167. battle

  1168. and Gideon's

  1169. heart is not

  1170. changed

  1171. and obviously

  1172. his failures

  1173. don't endear him

  1174. to the triune

  1175. God

  1176. nobody thinks

  1177. that his

  1178. failures

  1179. makes him

  1180. closer to

  1181. God

  1182. and so in

  1183. Gideon's

  1184. life you see

  1185. both this

  1186. mixture of

  1187. success and

  1188. failure

  1189. and if both

  1190. success and

  1191. failure keep

  1192. you from the

  1193. triune God

  1194. well then maybe

  1195. the nihilism

  1196. the nihilism

  1197. that I talked

  1198. about at the

  1199. beginning of the

  1200. service is

  1201. completely and

  1202. utterly correct

  1203. and Dostoevsky

  1204. is completely and

  1205. utterly correct

  1206. if God is

  1207. dead all things

  1208. are permissible

  1209. all that is

  1210. left is my

  1211. power and

  1212. my appetite

  1213. and my

  1214. desires

  1215. and my

  1216. comfort

  1217. and that is

  1218. all that is

  1219. left and

  1220. there is

  1221. nothing

  1222. no social

  1223. claim

  1224. no religious

  1225. or spiritual

  1226. claim can

  1227. make any

  1228. difference to

  1229. me

  1230. all that

  1231. matters is

  1232. my calculations

  1233. to maximize

  1234. myself

  1235. or maybe

  1236. there is a

  1237. God that's

  1238. just completely

  1239. and utterly

  1240. abandoned us

  1241. because the

  1242. fact of the

  1243. matter is

  1244. is if both

  1245. success and

  1246. failure do

  1247. not work

  1248. then unless

  1249. God has

  1250. mercy and

  1251. does something

  1252. for us we

  1253. have no hope

  1254. we have no

  1255. hope

  1256. only God

  1257. only God

  1258. God

  1259. now if you

  1260. could put up

  1261. the next

  1262. point just

  1263. very briefly

  1264. you will

  1265. always have

  1266. to struggle

  1267. with the

  1268. world the

  1269. flesh and

  1270. the devil

  1271. until you

  1272. die that's

  1273. one of the

  1274. messages of

  1275. the Bible

  1276. that there

  1277. is no sense

  1278. of arriving

  1279. in that sense

  1280. that we're

  1281. often looking

  1282. for but if

  1283. you could put

  1284. up the next

  1285. point Andrew

  1286. by grace

  1287. alone through

  1288. faith alone in

  1289. Christ alone

  1290. you have both

  1291. the certainty

  1292. of eternal

  1293. security and

  1294. the certainty

  1295. of help for

  1296. the daily

  1297. struggle against

  1298. the world the

  1299. flesh and

  1300. the devil so

  1301. let me unpack

  1302. all of this

  1303. see if only

  1304. God if we

  1305. have this

  1306. basic problem

  1307. and you know

  1308. one of the

  1309. things which is

  1310. so powerful

  1311. about the

  1312. Bible if you

  1313. if you listen

  1314. to the stories

  1315. is that the

  1316. the Bible

  1317. regularly surprises

  1318. us because if

  1319. we're honest about

  1320. the longings and

  1321. the yearnings and

  1322. our doubts and

  1323. our uncertainties

  1324. time and time

  1325. and time again

  1326. we see that

  1327. only the Bible

  1328. fulfills in

  1329. its own way

  1330. in a deeper

  1331. and wiser

  1332. and truer way

  1333. the longings and

  1334. the yearnings of

  1335. our hearts and

  1336. can speak to

  1337. the cynicism and

  1338. the skepticism

  1339. that we bring

  1340. against our own

  1341. longings and our

  1342. yearnings you

  1343. see if we're

  1344. honest success

  1345. and failure don't

  1346. seem to work

  1347. because it

  1348. doesn't change

  1349. this fundamental

  1350. desire I have

  1351. for glory

  1352. and to be the

  1353. center

  1354. and so what

  1355. this is preparing

  1356. us for in the

  1357. book of Judges is

  1358. what's going to

  1359. happen in the

  1360. cross

  1361. you see at the

  1362. very very heart of

  1363. reality as is

  1364. revealed in the

  1365. cross isn't a

  1366. solitary God who

  1367. is lonely who had

  1368. to create human

  1369. beings because he

  1370. had nobody to

  1371. love or she had

  1372. nobody to love

  1373. and unlike in the

  1374. stories of the

  1375. east and in

  1376. paganism it isn't

  1377. as if there was

  1378. some type of God

  1379. and there was

  1380. some cosmic

  1381. catastrophe as

  1382. if for a

  1383. moment God

  1384. forgot that he

  1385. was God and

  1386. lost control and

  1387. some catastrophe

  1388. happened it

  1389. happened somewhere

  1390. else and and

  1391. now he might or

  1392. might not deal

  1393. with and get

  1394. around to dealing

  1395. with it no the

  1396. very heart as is

  1397. revealed in Jesus

  1398. and as he unlocks

  1399. the true meaning of

  1400. the Old Testament

  1401. the very heart of

  1402. who God is is

  1403. that from all

  1404. eternity the

  1405. father is love

  1406. the son and

  1407. the Holy Spirit

  1408. is both the

  1409. means by which

  1410. that love is

  1411. communicated and

  1412. his love himself

  1413. and the son has

  1414. received the

  1415. father's love and

  1416. his love the father

  1417. back and the Holy

  1418. Spirit is both the

  1419. very means by which

  1420. that is communicated

  1421. and carried and

  1422. his love himself as

  1423. well and from all

  1424. eternity the father

  1425. has revealed himself

  1426. to the son communicated

  1427. and carried by the

  1428. Holy Spirit and the

  1429. son has revealed

  1430. himself back to the

  1431. father in delight

1432. and in love and it

  1433. is out of the

  1434. overflow of who

  1435. God is that the

  1436. triune God created

  1437. human beings and

  1438. when we decided that

1439. we would be like God

  1440. ourselves and we

  1441. bent and warped and

  1442. twist our nature God

1443. did not despise us or

  1444. abandon us because it

1445. is the very nature of

1446. God that he is love

  1447. an overflow of love

  1448. an overflow of

  1449. goodness and so in

  1450. the fullness of time

  1451. through stories like

  1452. this posing riddles to

1453. us about how is it

  1454. that we have longings

  1455. for having arrived but

1456. at the same time doubt

  1457. that we could ever

1458. arrive and how is it

  1459. that both success can

  1460. ruin us and failure

1461. ruins us and if both

  1462. success and failure

1463. ruins us and we have a

1464. longing to be whole how

1465. can that ever be and

1466. so the story is posing

1467. these riddles for us to

1468. read and enter into so

1469. that when we come to

1470. Jesus and we learn of

  1471. the father's eternal love

1472. of the son and the son's

  1473. eternal love of the

  1474. father and the Holy

  1475. Spirit both God himself

1476. but also the love that

  1477. flows between and the

  1478. creation of all things

1479. out of the overflow of

  1480. love and God never

  1481. stopping being loving and

1482. seeing you and me and

  1483. our profound unfixable

1484. need that Jesus does the

1485. exact God the son of

  1486. God does the exact

  1487. opposite of our

  1488. condition if our

1489. condition is to be so

  1490. bent that we somehow

1491. think we could be like

1492. God God the son of God

  1493. remaining in nature God

  1494. strips himself of his

1495. appearance of God of his

1496. power as God and becomes

1497. no human being is more

1498. weak than they are when

1499. then than when they are a

  1500. zygote in their mother's

1501. womb no human being is

1502. weaker than when they are a

  1503. zygote in their mother's

1504. womb and God the son of God

1505. takes into himself our human

  1506. nature becomes one person

1507. and enters our human race as a

1508. zygote in the womb of

1509. Mary and the only thing that

1510. can be lower than that is what

1511. happens at the end of his life

1512. when he dies because you can't

1513. be poorer than dead that's

  1514. something Flannery O'Connor said

1515. you can't be poorer than dead

1516. and on the cross we see this

1517. wonderful offer that God makes

1518. to us to solve the riddle of

1519. our longings and our yearnings

1520. and the riddles posed by our

  1521. cynicisms and our doubts

1522. that God the son of God says I

1523. will die a death in your place

1524. and you know George after you're

1525. dead and gone and your kids

1526. talk freely about the different

  1527. ways that you weren't a perfect

1528. dad and you bent their life out

1529. of shape and your grandkids and

1530. you know the ministry interns in

  1531. your congregations and your

1532. neighbors and all those other

1533. people and not only all the

1534. things the ways that your pride

1535. bent you out of shape and bent

1536. other people out of shape and

1537. hurt them and helped to bend them

1538. out of shape and all the things

1539. that they could say against you

1540. and all the things that they wish

1541. that could be said to you and the

1542. ways that you should be punished

1543. because of the different ways they

1544. hurt you hurt them all of those

1545. will be on me George that will

1546. unmake you and I offer to take your

1547. place and have all of that come on me

1548. because I love you and George your

1549. inability whether through success or

1550. failure to live a life that is in

1551. harmony with God the Father and the

1552. Holy Spirit and that love and that

1553. truth and that the beauty and that

1554. that wonder that's been eternally

1555. communicated between the Father and

1556. the Son through the Holy Spirit and by

1557. the Holy Spirit and your inability to

1558. ever even remotely be at home with

1559. that and my perfect at homeness in

1560. that I will offer that to you I will

1561. trade places with you George I will

1562. bear the consequence of your pride and

1563. I will offer you the destiny of my

1564. great humility and love to clothe you

1565. and there is nothing you can do by

1566. success or failure George all you can

1567. do is receive it by faith and here's the

1568. wonderful thing about this you see when

1569. you put your faith and trust in Jesus the

1570. Bible has this constant message of

1571. eternal security it means that after

1572. today if I have done before I came into

1573. this church God does not love me any

1574. more if I've done a good job in the

1575. sermon than he will if I've done a bad

1576. job in the sermon I standing with him

1577. does not depend upon my ability to

1578. accomplish these things when I put my

1579. faith and trust in Jesus and I know

1580. that he has done everything that my

1581. pride doesn't demands to be punished

1582. and he has taken that upon himself and

1583. all that my success and failure cannot

1584. accomplish because of my bended knee

1585. that he clothes him with his own he

1586. closed me with his destiny and I

1587. receive both by faith when I put my

1588. faith and trust in him it means that the

1589. moment after I die it does not matter

1590. how the world has evaluated me or how

1591. the world has evaluated you but the

1592. moment after I die or you die in Jesus

1593. the words of the triune God to you will

1594. be welcome home you are mine and I am

  1595. yours welcome home

1596. so on one hand through the gospel I

1597. have an eternal security not based on

1598. my accomplishment or my failure and at

1599. the same time as we are gripped by the

1600. gospel and it begins to soften our heart

1601. towards gratitude and soften our heart

1602. towards humility as this story of the

1603. gospel becomes that upon which we stand

1604. and that by which we begin to see the

1605. world and begin to see ourselves it

1606. means that week by week and day by day

1607. but week by week in particular when we

1608. gather together with other people who

1609. are followers of Jesus on the Lord's day

1610. to be reminded of this it gives me and

1611. gives you as the gospel grips us more

1612. and more a firm place to stand and say

1613. Lord my pride has really had a field day

1614. of wrecking my life this week my

1615. arrogance my selfishness thank you so

1616. much for what you did for me on the

1617. cross I give these things before you

1618. Lord help me to amend my life that I

1619. might be more like Jesus

1620. it gives us the certainty without the

1621. cynicism to live with Jesus by grace

1622. alone through faith alone in Christ

1623. alone you have both the certainty of

1624. eternal security and the certainty of

1625. help for the daily struggle against the

1626. world the flesh and the devil until you

1627. see God face to face and he says welcome

1628. home my beloved invite you to stand

1629. just bow our heads in prayer

1630. father just as we go into this prayer you

1631. know the state of all of our hearts and

1632. father if there is one here or more that

1633. have not yet at this time given their

1634. lives to Jesus we ask father those of us

1635. who know the the wonder of grace we ask

1636. father that you would move in a powerful

1637. way in their lives and help them even now

1638. at this time to say Jesus be my savior

1639. Jesus be my savior father save me through

1640. Jesus and father for all of us you know our

1641. hearts you know how our wake week has been

1642. you know those of us who can't forgive you

1643. know those of us who are filled with

1644. revenge you know those of us who are

1645. consumed with envy those of us who are

1646. consumed with pride with gluttony with

1647. greed with anger father you know those of

1648. us who struggle with this all this week we

1649. you're children but we still struggle with

1650. it and father we thank you that we can be

1651. reminded in your word of the gospel and we

1652. ask father that you would make us disciples

1653. of Jesus gripped by the gospel learning to

1654. live for your glory that you would grip us

1655. with this eternal security and in the power

1656. of the Holy Spirit that we can look at our

1657. day in our week in our lives with realism

1658. but without cynicism without despair but

1659. with hope and that you would bring those

1660. things to our mind that we can lay at your

1661. feet and ask for your help and your

1662. strength that we might be disciples of

1663. Jesus gripped by the gospel learning to

1664. live for your glory and all God's people

  1665. said amen
