  1. Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would come with might and power and deep conviction,

  2. not just now as we receive your word, but throughout the entire service.

  3. Father, please, in your mercy, have your Holy Spirit so move the very center of who we are

  4. to able to desire to come into your presence and to receive from you and to respond to you in a worthy manner.

  5. And so grip us with the gospel that we will grow day by day into disciples of Jesus who are gripped by the gospel,

  6. learning to live for your glory.

  7. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  8. Please be seated.

  9. So, I'm going to tell you something really boring.

  10. One of the things that Jenny, who's the admin person, and I are going to do in a couple of weeks' time is we're going to set aside at least one day

  11. to go over all of the QuickBooks line entries and all of the ways that we record income and expenditures in all of our funds.

  12. And we're going to go right back to zero.

  13. Am I putting you all to sleep?

  14. But we're going to do this, right?

  15. Every single line item of QuickBooks.

  16. This is if the council on Monday night gives us permission.

  17. This is what we're going to do.

  18. Now, this sounds unbelievably boring, but it's one of those things which is boring, not urgent.

  19. We could go another couple of years without doing it.

  20. But it's actually really, really, really, really important.

  21. And a lot of times in life, you have to do things that aren't urgent, but are very important.

  22. In fact, there's a famous writer by the name of Stephen Covey who wrote a book called Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

  23. And one of the things he does is he talks about doing good effective people do quadrant two things.

  24. Effective organizations do quadrant two things.

  25. That's something which is important but not urgent.

  26. Most people live their lives dealing with the urgent, and a lot of the urgent is completely and utterly unimportant.

  27. And to spend all your time doing urgent but unimportant things is just a definition to really accomplish nothing of worth in life.

  28. So we're going to be spending this time doing something which is important, help have our finances clearer, but not urgent.

  29. I mention this because in the Bible story that we're looking at today, there are several things which make this story sort of very distant from us.

  30. But actually, the story is talking about, if you just sort of bear with me,

  31. it's talking about something which is really, really important, but people rarely feel is urgent.

  32. And since we all would like to be effective people, nobody likes to go around and say,

  33. by the way, I'm an unbelievably ineffective person.

  34. In fact, if somebody said that to us, they're probably hoping we'd say to them,

  35. oh, come on, you're actually pretty effective.

  36. They're fishing for a compliment.

  37. But nobody likes to say that.

  38. So this text, believe it or not, is actually dealing with something very, very important,

  39. but most people never think it's urgent.

  40. So if you turn your Bibles to Judges chapter 13, Judges chapter 13, verse 1.

Judges 13 chapter mention Judges 13:1

  41. And if you don't have Bibles, there's some up there.

  42. You can come and follow along with me, and you can keep the Bible if you don't have a Bible of your own.

  43. And we're going through the book of Judges.

  44. And if this was a Netflix series, we're going to begin a three-part sub-story, so to speak, in a longer story arc.

  45. And we're going to look at three stories or three episodes about Samson,

  46. a person that many people have heard of, even if they're not Christian.

  47. And if I was a—well, you'll see in a moment.

  48. This week, we're going to look at the birth of Samson.

  49. Next week, we're going to look at the battles of Samson.

  50. And if I was a good Baptist, I would know another B to begin the third episode.

  51. But all I can think of is the destruction, you know, the demise and death of Samson.

  52. And so, by the way, if some of you can come up with a B to describe that third episode,

  53. that would be very handy, and I'll announce it next week.

  54. Samson is the last of the Judges.

  55. It talks about this chaotic period in Israel after they've come into the Promised Land.

  56. They're constantly being invaded.

  57. And they're very, very disunified.

  58. And Samson is the last of these 12 judges that the Book of Judges tells us about.

  59. So that sort of gets you up to it.

  60. And this week, we're going to look at the birth, which doesn't sound very interesting,

  61. other than the fact that it's actually going to deal with something which is very important,

  62. but is never urgent.

  63. And here's how it goes.

  64. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  65. So the Lord gave them into the hand of the Philistines for 40 years.

  66. I haven't mentioned this very much, but Philistines who become eventually more and more and more important in the Bible,

  67. a way to understand who they are, they're a little bit like if you lived in the British Isles in certain centuries,

  68. and they kept being invaded by the Norse, people from what we now call Norway and Sweden and Denmark,

  69. sea raiders who would come and occupy parts of the land or maybe just come and leave.

  70. But that's what Philistines were.

  71. They weren't actually native to the land.

  72. They were sea raiding people who kept invading this land.

  73. And for 40 years, they've been oppressing the people of Israel.

  74. But here's the thing, which we're going to talk about it a lot more at the end,

  75. but I want you to notice this phrase,

  76. and the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  77. I coach people about how to speak, how to teach the Bible, and how to preach.

  78. And one of the things I do when I'm coaching people about how to preach or teach the Bible

  79. is I say that as part of their preparation, they should try to understand the entire text.

  80. They should take time to look at the entire text and try to understand every bit of it.

  81. I'm not patting myself on the back, but after the 8 o'clock service,

  82. somebody asked me about a bit of the text which I didn't talk on,

  83. and I could give them the answer.

  84. Same thing happened last week.

  85. I said, that's what you should always be able to do.

  86. But usually in a text, in a sermon, you're not giving a university lecture.

  87. You're giving a sermon, and it means you can't cover everything in the text.

  88. You sort of have to pick a path through the text.

  89. And so every week as we've been going through the book of Judges,

  90. I've picked a path through the text.

  91. And every week I've not mentioned this little phrase,

  92. and the people of Israel had gained it what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  93. But it's actually one of the most important phrases in the entire book of Judges.

  94. And you can see that in two ways.

  95. But every week it didn't make the cut, so to speak.

  96. But this week, and maybe in another one of the weeks,

  97. I just want to, we're going to camp on that a little bit.

  98. And this is actually getting at what is important but not urgent.

  99. Seven different times in the book of Judges, this phrase has come.

  100. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  101. Seven times is the number of perfection.

  102. It means it's a very, very important idea.

  103. It's part of the introduction,

  104. and it's part of half of all of the stories of the Judges.

  105. This phrase has come.

  106. And this is the last time in the book that the phrase appears.

  107. But the phrase appears, the idea appears in a different form two times in the conclusion of the book.

  108. And it's when we see how it's phrased,

  109. the semi-basic concept is phrased with different words that we understand,

  110. in a sense, the sharpness of this idea.

  111. If you turn in your Bibles to chapter 17, verse 6,

  112. which is at the beginning of a very long conclusion to the book of Judges,

  113. and you'll see this.

  114. In those days, there was no king in Israel.

  115. Note this.

  116. Everyone did what was right in his or her own eyes.

  117. Everyone did what was right in his or her own eyes.

  118. And in the conclusion, you're going to see in the two-part conclusion,

  119. just like massive foolishness and selfishness and horrendous things going on.

  120. And you realize that this phrase is another way of getting at this fundamental concept

  121. that's explained, said seven times about people did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  122. And another way to say that is that people were doing what was right in their own eyes.

  123. And to help really bring home that this is an important idea in the entire book

  124. is see the very last words of the book.

  125. If you have your Bibles, it's 21-25.

  126. And the very, very final words of the entire book say this.

  127. In those days, there was no king in Israel.

  128. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  129. Now, there's lots of things that are difficult about trying to bring a biblical text to bear.

  130. For those of us reading it today in 2020,

  131. in post-modern capitalist or post-capitalist,

  132. a knowledge-based economy like Canada in 2020,

  133. like Ottawa in 2020,

  134. there's lots of things that make bridging that gap very, very difficult sometimes.

  135. And that's why lots of times sermons can be unbelievably boring.

  136. They don't attempt to bridge that gap between the ancient world and how we live today.

  137. But here we see there's a huge problem that has to be addressed,

  138. which I'm going to talk about in a moment,

  139. which I think is this urgent thing, non-urgent thing,

  140. but actually unbelievably important.

  141. And that is, how is the fundamental way that most Canadians think about life is this.

  142. Brother, only you know what is right for you.

  143. Don't listen to your dad.

  144. Don't listen to your brother.

  145. Don't listen to religious figures like me.

  146. Sister, only you know what is right for you.

  147. And you need to pursue what is right for you.

  148. And only, don't let anybody else,

  149. don't let your roommate,

  150. don't let your sister,

  151. your mother,

  152. your father,

  153. your kids,

  154. a church,

  155. a school,

  156. a coach,

  157. don't let any,

  158. only you know what is right for you.

  159. And if you want to be really human and really whole,

  160. you need to be authentic and pursue that.

  161. In other words,

  162. do what is right in your own eyes.

  163. Now you see part of the problem.

  164. The basic anthem of Canada is do what is right in your own eyes.

  165. And the basic message of the book of Judges is,

  166. if you do what is right in your own eyes,

  167. you're more often than not doing what is evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  168. And we see a huge gap between the biblical text and us.

  169. And it would be one of the reasons why many Canadians would say,

  170. like, chuck the Bible.

  171. It's not helpful at all.

  172. It's just oppressive.

  173. Believe it or not,

  174. the way the rest of the story goes actually points to a better way than how most Canadians think.

  175. It captures the good,

  176. the true good in how Canadians think,

  177. without realizing how unbalanced and dangerous it is.

  178. And the Bible is going to point in this story,

  179. hint and show a direction towards a far better way

  180. that actually answers the real longings to how Canadians think,

  181. without the profound selfishness that goes along with how Canadians think.

  182. So let's look at how it goes.

  183. Look how the story goes.

  184. So we've already said,

  185. I have to get back to my text,

  186. we've already said,

  187. and the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  188. So the Lord gave them into the hand of the Philistines for 40 years.

  189. And then the story continues.

  190. This is the birth of Samson.

  191. There was a certain man of Zorah,

  192. of the tribe of the Danites,

  193. whose name was Manoah,

  194. and his wife was barren and had no children.

  195. And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her,

  196. Behold, you are barren and have not born children,

  197. but you shall conceive and bear a son.

  198. Therefore be careful and drink no wine or strong drink

  199. and eat nothing unclean.

  200. For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son.

  201. No razor shall come upon his head.

  202. For the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb.

  203. And he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.

  204. Now just sort of pause there to understand what they're saying is,

  205. if you go back later on and you read Numbers chapter 6,

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  206. which would have been a passage of scripture

  207. that would have been available to them at this time,

  208. you'll see that there's a special vow of a Nazarite.

  209. And the vow of the Nazarite is for a person,

  210. like a Jewish person back in those days,

  211. who's in a time of crisis.

  212. And not only crisis,

  213. but a crossroads connected to the crisis.

  214. And they really need God's presence

  215. and they really need God's direction.

  216. And so they take upon themselves for a season,

  217. a special vow to live in a sense,

  218. in a specially holy way,

  219. because they want to be in God's presence.

  220. They want to be able to call out to him

  221. for his direction and for his help and for his strength.

  222. And so the basic feature of the vow of the Nazarite,

  223. apart from the fact that it's a special time of prayer

  224. and seeking the Lord's will,

  225. is that no razor will touch your head at all.

  226. So your beard, if you're a man,

  227. your beard will grow out longer

  228. and your hair will grow longer.

  229. If you're a woman,

  230. your hair will just grow longer and longer.

  231. And the second aspect of it

  232. is that you don't have anything that's from the vine.

  233. So you can't have raisins,

  234. can't have grapes,

  235. can't have wine,

  236. can't have grape juice,

  237. anything connected to the vine,

  238. you're not allowed to have.

  239. And the third thing

  240. is that you're not allowed to be near dead bodies.

  241. And it's just like,

  242. it's just in a sense three markers.

  243. On one level, it doesn't really matter.

  244. It's the same thing

  245. how Christians would understand fasting.

  246. On one level, fasting doesn't matter

  247. other than the fact

  248. that it's a bit of a way to symbolize

  249. that you're giving up something

  250. to devote yourself more to seeking God's will.

  251. That's sort of the heart of this practice.

  252. And by the way,

  253. for those of you who aren't familiar with this story,

  254. Samson is going to violate

  255. all of the conditions of a Nazarite.

  256. Every single one of them.

  257. Some of them spectacularly.

  258. Don't be near dead bodies.

  259. The body count in Samson's life

  260. is going to be very high,

  261. all at his hand.

  262. So,

  263. he's going to violate this all the time.

  264. But that's the vow.

  265. And God's angel is saying to the parents,

  266. this baby that's going to be born to you,

  267. he's going to be a boy

  268. and he's going to be a Nazarite from birth.

  269. And his purpose is to begin to save Israel

  270. from the hand of the Philistines.

  271. So, what happens is,

  272. verse 6 and 7,

  273. Then the woman came and told her husband,

  274. A man of God came to me

  275. and his appearance was like the appearance

  276. of the angel of God.

  277. Very awesome.

  278. I did not ask him where he was from

  279. and he did not tell me his name.

  280. But he said to me,

  281. Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son.

  282. So then drink no wine or strong drink

  283. and eat nothing unclean,

  284. for the child shall be a Nazarite to God

  285. from the womb to the day of his death.

  286. Now, just sort of pause here.

  287. A little thing to notice in the story.

  288. And I've mentioned this before.

  289. The angel of the Lord is a being

  290. that appears many times in the Old Testament.

  291. And basically, it's a mystery.

  292. It's an enigma.

  293. If you go back and read theologians,

  294. it's not clear whether it's a theophany,

  295. like an appearance of God.

  296. Some people actually think

  297. that it's a pre-incarnate visitation

  298. by Jesus himself.

  299. Or it's an angel that has

  300. a special relationship with God.

  301. But it's very, very clear

  302. it's a very unique type of being.

  303. And that when this being speaks,

  304. it's God speaking.

  305. It's as if God is present right with them,

  306. speaking directly and plainly to them.

  307. And this being appears as a man.

  308. So we know from the editor

  309. that it's an angel of the Lord,

  310. but they still think it's a man.

  311. It looks like a man.

  312. And that's how they refer to this being.

  313. So she goes and tells her husband

  314. these things.

  315. So how does her husband respond?

  316. Well, actually,

  317. her husband believes her.

  318. Verse 8.

  319. Then Manoah prayed to the Lord

  320. and said,

  321. O Lord,

  322. please let the man of God,

  323. notice that,

  324. the man of God whom you sent

  325. come again to us

  326. and teach us

  327. what we are to do

  328. with the child

  329. who will be born.

  330. And God listened

  331. to the voice of Manoah.

  332. And the angel of God

  333. came again to the woman

  334. as she sat in the field.

  335. Sort of notice,

  336. that's sort of interesting,

  337. that the man,

  338. Manoah's praying it,

  339. but the angel doesn't show up

  340. to Manoah.

  341. He shows up again

  342. to Manoah's wife.

  343. But Manoah,

  344. her husband,

  345. was not with her.

  346. So the woman

  347. ran quickly

  348. and told her husband,

  349. Behold,

  350. the man who came to me

  351. the other day

  352. has appeared to me.

  353. And Manoah arose

  354. and went after his wife

  355. and came to the man

  356. and said to him,

  357. Are you the man

  358. who spoke to this woman?

  359. And he said,

  360. I am.

  361. Now just sort of pause

  362. before I read anything else.

  363. If I was in a social gathering

  364. with my wife

  365. and I meet somebody

  366. that I haven't met before

  367. and I said to him,

  368. Are you the one

  369. who spoke to this woman?

  370. My wife would be upset.

  371. Don't take any type

  372. of marital advice

  373. from this particular story.

  374. Men who are married,

  375. men who have girlfriends,

  376. never refer to your wife

  377. or your girlfriend

  378. as this woman

  379. as if she doesn't have a name.

  380. Just a mere pointer.

  381. Just because it's in the Bible

  382. doesn't mean

  383. that you should go

  384. and do likewise.

  385. A lot of times

  386. in these stories

  387. it's telling you

  388. what not to do.

  389. I just thought

  390. I'd bring that out

  391. just in case

  392. any of you

  393. were a bit confused by it

  394. and started referring

  395. to your wife

  396. as this woman

  397. because the Bible

  398. told you to do so.

  399. Don't do it.

  400. Anyway,

  401. verse 12.

  402. Continue on.

  403. And Manoah said,

  404. Now when your words

  405. come true,

  406. what is to be

  407. the child's manner of life

  408. and what is his mission?

  409. And the angel of the Lord

  410. said to Manoah,

  411. Of all that I said

  412. to the woman,

  413. let her be careful,

  414. she may not eat

  415. of anything

  416. that comes from the vine,

  417. neither let her drink

  418. wine or strong drink

  419. or eat any unclean thing.

  420. All that I commanded her,

  421. let her observe.

  422. Now just sort of

  423. notice here

  424. for a second,

  425. the angel actually

  426. leaves something out.

  427. He actually,

  428. it's a bit of a rebuke

  429. to Manoah.

  430. He says,

  431. Whatever I told her,

  432. you need to both do it.

  433. And he left out

  434. something that he'd said

  435. to the woman,

  436. so he has to actually

  437. listen to his wife.

  438. But the main thing

  439. in here is this,

  440. just to notice this,

  441. and this is going

  442. to be really important

  443. to understand that thing

  444. which is important

  445. but never urgent.

  446. What Manoah wants

  447. is he wants

  448. to know the rules

  449. and he wants

  450. to know the steps.

  451. He says,

  452. Okay God,

  453. this is really good news

  454. that we're going

  455. to have a son.

  456. So okay,

  457. what do we have to do?

  458. Okay,

  459. you've told me

  460. a few things about her

  461. and obviously

  462. that implicates me

  463. but what precisely

  464. is it we should do?

  465. And where precisely

  466. is it that this is going?

  467. And on one hand,

  468. you'll notice

  469. it's very interesting

  470. because that was part

  471. of Manoah's prayer,

  472. right?

  473. So the angel of the Lord

  474. speaks to Manoah's wife

  475. and Manoah calls out

  476. to the Lord,

  477. Could you please help us

  478. and let us know

  479. what exactly it is

  480. we want to do?

  481. And God is answering

  482. his prayer

  483. by sending the angel

  484. of the Lord

  485. a second time

  486. and now Manoah asks

  487. the angel of the Lord,

  488. Can you tell us

  489. the rules?

  490. Can you tell us

  491. the steps?

  492. Can you tell us

  493. everything that has

  494. to be done?

  495. So on one hand,

  496. the angel of the Lord

  497. is answering the prayer

  498. but the angel of the Lord

  499. doesn't answer the prayer.

  500. He doesn't tell him

  501. what to do.

  502. So it's just sort of left

  503. and let's see

  504. how it develops

  505. because in fact,

  506. the angel of the Lord,

  507. I didn't flip it,

  508. the angel of the Lord

  509. is going to answer

  510. the request

  511. but in a completely

  512. out of left field

  513. type of way,

  514. not the way

  515. that Manoah wants

  516. to be answered,

  517. not the way

  518. he's expecting

  519. and he might not

  520. even have recognized

  521. that the angel of the Lord

  522. has answered his request.

  523. But here's what happens.

  524. Verse 15,

  525. Manoah said

  526. to the angel of the Lord,

  527. please let us detain you

  528. and prepare a young goat

  529. for you.

  530. And the angel of the Lord

  531. said to Manoah,

  532. if you detain me,

  533. I will not eat

  534. of your food

  535. but if you prepare

  536. a burnt offering,

  537. then offer it

  538. to the Lord.

  539. Now this is actually

  540. part of the Lord's answer

  541. because if you read

  542. other stories

  543. with the angel of the Lord,

  544. sometimes they do eat food

  545. but his refusal

  546. to eat food

  547. and to have a sacrifice

  548. to the Lord

  549. is part of the answer

  550. that the Lord

  551. is giving to Manoah

  552. and his wife.

  553. The brackets

  554. for Manoah,

  555. verse 16,

  556. did not know

  557. that he was

  558. the angel of the Lord.

  559. Verse 17,

  560. And Manoah

  561. said to the angel

  562. of the Lord,

  563. what is your name

  564. so that when your words

  565. come true

  566. we may honor you?

  567. And actually,

  568. every English version

  569. of the Bible

  570. gets the original

  571. language incorrect.

  572. What's happened

  573. is that Manoah

  574. has become tongue-tied

  575. and in the original language

  576. that sentence,

  577. the question is completely

  578. and utterly ungrammatic

  579. because it begins

  580. with who.

  581. So he wants to say

  582. who are you

  583. but he starts to say

  584. who

  585. and then he switches

  586. in the middle

  587. of the language

  588. and realizes

  589. he shouldn't be asking

  590. who are you.

  591. So in Hebrew

  592. it's completely ungrammatic.

  593. It doesn't make any sense

  594. because it's obvious

  595. he's going to ask

  596. who are you.

  597. He starts to ask

  598. that question

  599. but then he sort of

  600. switches and ends

  601. his sentence

  602. as if he's saying

  603. what is your name?

  604. And in English

  605. they do a valid thing

  606. they straighten it all out.

  607. And he says

  608. what is your name?

  609. Verse 17

  610. so that when your words

  611. come true

  612. we may honor you.

  613. And the angel of the Lord

  614. said to him

  615. why do you ask my name?

  616. Seeing

  617. it is wonderful.

  618. We're going to talk

  619. about that in a moment

  620. but let's just sort of

  621. get to the next thing

  622. that happens

  623. which fits

  624. with this

  625. angel's name

  626. being wonderful.

  627. Not that that's

  628. the angel's name.

  629. So Manoah took

  630. the young goat

  631. with the grain offering

  632. and offered it

  633. on the rock

  634. to the Lord

  635. to the one

  636. who works wonders.

  637. And wonders here

  638. means he does

  639. the impossible.

  640. He does the

  641. inconceivable.

  642. He does the big.

  643. He does the wow.

  644. He does the

  645. whoa.

  646. He does the

  647. huh?

  648. That's what wonders

  649. is sort of

  650. trying to get at.

  651. To the one

  652. who works wonders

  653. and Manoah

  654. and his wife

  655. were watching

  656. and when the flame

  657. went up toward heaven

  658. from the altar

  659. the angel of the Lord

  660. went up

  661. in the flame

  662. of the altar.

  663. In other words

  664. the angel of the Lord

  665. the man

  666. entered the flame

  667. ascended with the flame

  668. towards heaven

  669. and vanishes

  670. in the air above him.

  671. Now Manoah

  672. and his wife

  673. were watching

  674. and when they saw this

  675. they fell on their faces

  676. to the ground.

  677. Now the rest of the story

  678. just is about

  679. whether the Lord

  680. is going to kill them

  681. and it's all important

  682. but you get the basic

  683. idea here

  684. right now.

  685. Now remember I said

  686. that the

  687. basic way

  688. that Canadians

  689. understand themselves

  690. is that you know

  691. George

  692. you need to be true

  693. to yourself.

  694. Like only you know

  695. what is really

  696. true and needful

  697. for you

  698. to be the person

  699. that you should be

  700. and don't listen

  701. to your wife

  702. don't listen

  703. to your kids

  704. don't listen to

  705. you know

  706. don't listen

  707. definitely don't listen

  708. to the bishop

  709. you know

  710. don't listen

  711. to the congregation

  712. you've got to be

  713. true to you

  714. you need to pursue

  715. being true

  716. to you

  717. and

  718. and on one level

  719. we Christians

  720. have to agree

  721. with part of

  722. that sentiment

  723. and I think

  724. this book here

  725. as I'll explain

  726. in a moment

  727. would be

  728. understand that

  729. obviously

  730. there has to be

  731. a way

  732. that

  733. whatever it is

  734. that you're

  735. supposed to be doing

  736. that it should

  737. somehow fit

  738. with you

  739. and that it

  740. shouldn't be

  741. completely and utterly

  742. foreign to you

  743. that there should be

  744. something

  745. if you in fact

  746. are a unique person

  747. that is unique

  748. about you

  749. that is

  750. expressed

  751. and reflected

  752. but consider this

  753. thought experiment

  754. you know

  755. from a very

  756. very early age

  757. I was profoundly

  758. affected

  759. by the story

  760. of Martin Luther King

  761. Jr.

  762. and the civil rights

  763. movement in the states

  764. I mean I can't

  765. communicate that to you

  766. I'm older than

  767. a lot of you

  768. and Martin Luther King

  769. died

  770. when I would have

  771. just been

  772. in junior high

  773. and so

  774. you know

  775. the early documentary

  776. like I have many

  777. memories of the

  778. of newscasts

  779. of seeing what was

  780. going on

  781. with Martin Luther King

  782. and the civil rights

  783. movement in the states

  784. and I remember

  785. going out of my way

  786. to see documentaries

  787. and other types

  788. of things

  789. because from a very

  790. very early age

  791. there was something

  792. about that story

  793. which I found

  794. very very compelling

  795. and even now

  796. unbidden to me

  797. I can see

  798. just as soon as

  799. I even tell you this

  800. I can see in my

  801. mind's eye

  802. perfectly

  803. some of the

  804. some of the

  805. iconic scenes

  806. of Martin Luther King

  807. and his leading

  808. of the civil rights

  809. movement

  810. to deal with

  811. the terrible

  812. oppression

  813. of African Americans

  814. in the United States

  815. but especially

  816. in the south

  817. I can picture

  818. these times

  819. even now as I speak

  820. it's almost making me

  821. choke up

  822. of Martin Luther King

  823. and his

  824. and the other

  825. other people

  826. who are with him

  827. it's surrounded

  828. by beefy

  829. white state troopers

  830. and jeering crowds

  831. and they're in a place

  832. that the state says

  833. they're not supposed to be

  834. and they get down

  835. on their knees

  836. and pray

  837. and as they're down

  838. on their knees

  839. to pray

  840. first the water cannons

  841. come and blast them

  842. and then you can see

  843. the troopers

  844. coming in amongst them

  845. and hitting them

  846. with their batons

  847. their wood

  848. and you can see

  849. just this

  850. profound

  851. dependence

  852. upon God

  853. and upon

  854. what is right

  855. and not showing

  856. violence

  857. as a way

  858. to defeat

  859. hatred

  860. and it has had

  861. a profound

  862. effect on me

  863. ever since I was

  864. in junior high

  865. and as a high school

  866. student

  867. and still to this day

  868. I get choked up

  869. just thinking about it

  870. and

  871. some of you

  872. have heard this

  873. but here's the thing

  874. here's the thing

  875. to think about

  876. I hope

  877. and I dream

  878. that if I

  879. could all of a sudden

  880. if I was older

  881. and if I was an American

  882. I hope and wish

  883. that I would be

  884. one of the people

  885. on my knees

  886. with Martin Luther King Jr.

  887. and every single

  888. one of us

  889. here in the room

  890. probably does as well

  891. most African Americans

  892. weren't

  893. and they were all

  894. being true

  895. to themselves

  896. they were all

  897. pursuing

  898. what was right

  899. for them

  900. and most of them

  901. weren't with

  902. Martin Luther King Jr.

  903. but were doing

  904. what was right

  905. in their own eyes

  906. and what about

  907. those beefy

  908. racist

  909. state troopers

  910. and racist

  911. jeering

  912. crowds

  913. they

  914. were being

  915. true

  916. to themselves

  917. they were doing

  918. what was right

  919. for them

  920. how does the

  921. basic message

  922. of morality

  923. in Canada

  924. address

  925. this huge

  926. problem

  927. it can't

  928. it can't

  929. see why

  930. it's important

  931. but not urgent

  932. if the

  933. fundamental

  934. way

  935. that people

  936. talk to

  937. themselves

  938. about their

  939. moral life

  940. and their

  941. self-identity

  942. and their

  943. quest

  944. does not

  945. help them

  946. to distinguish

  947. between a

  948. violent racist

  949. and Martin

  950. Luther King

  951. Jr.

  952. then how

  953. is it

  954. helpful

  955. and if it

  956. doesn't actually

  957. distinguish

  958. between Martin

  959. Luther King

  960. Jr.

  961. and the

  962. people

  963. who are

  964. with him

  965. and a

  966. large number

  967. of African

  968. Americans

  969. who weren't

  970. there but

  971. were doing

  972. what was

  973. right

  974. how does

  975. it help

  976. you

  977. how does

  978. this fit

  979. with the

  980. whole story

  981. see here's

  982. the thing

  983. which is

  984. very very

  985. interesting

  986. about the

  987. whole story

  988. we have

  989. this basic

  990. sense

  991. which I

  992. think is

  993. correct

  994. that

  995. you know

  996. the worry

  997. is

  998. that there's

  999. going to

  1000. be some

  1001. type of

  1002. a goodness

  1003. or some

  1004. type of

  1005. conformity

  1006. that will

  1007. squash us

  1008. that will

  1009. kill us

  1010. that will

  1011. kill what

  1012. is unique

  1013. in us

  1014. which is

  1015. beautiful

  1016. in us

  1017. which is

  1018. sort of

  1019. irreplaceable

  1020. in us

  1021. and we have

  1022. this deep

  1023. worry

  1024. so we go

  1025. to the

  1026. opposite

  1027. extreme

  1028. in terms

  1029. of our

  1030. moral

  1031. exhortations

  1032. but we have

  1033. this very

  1034. very very

  1035. interesting

  1036. story here

  1037. which is

  1038. in this

  1039. very very

  1040. very old

  1041. book

  1042. and the

  1043. thing which

  1044. is very

  1045. very interesting

  1046. in this

  1047. story

  1048. is that

  1049. first of

  1050. all it's

  1051. all in the

  1052. context

  1053. about being

  1054. worried about

  1055. what is

  1056. right or

  1057. wrong in

  1058. the Lord's

  1059. eyes

  1060. and for

  1061. most Canadians

  1062. when they

  1063. hear about

  1064. doing evil

  1065. in the eyes

  1066. of the Lord

  1067. they think

  1068. the Lord

  1069. is like

  1070. a scientist

  1071. watching rats

  1072. doing experiments

  1073. and the

  1074. scientists don't

  1075. care about

  1076. the rats

  1077. all they're

  1078. doing is

  1079. observing the

  1080. rats

  1081. and dealing

  1082. with the

  1083. rats for

  1084. their own

  1085. purpose

  1086. and their

  1087. own good

  1088. in a sense

  1089. they're oppressing

  1090. the rats

  1091. and many

  1092. people when

  1093. they hear

  1094. this phrase

  1095. they reject

  1096. it but this

  1097. story shows

  1098. us something

  1099. very very

  1100. different

  1101. you see

  1102. when the

  1103. angel of

  1104. the Lord

  1105. says to

  1106. the person

  1107. Minoan

  1108. his wife

  1109. my name

  1110. is wonderful

  1111. the angel

  1112. of the Lord

  1113. is saying

  1114. that my

  1115. name is in

  1116. a category

  1117. and who

  1118. I am

  1119. is in a

  1120. category

  1121. that you

  1122. have no

  1123. frame of

  1124. reference

  1125. for

  1126. there's no

  1127. words for

  1128. it and

  1129. there can't

  1130. be words

  1131. that come

  1132. from you

  1133. for it

  1134. there's

  1135. there's

  1136. something

  1137. in a sense

  1138. what the

  1139. story is

  1140. doing is

  1141. it's

  1142. modeling

  1143. the

  1144. Christian

  1145. doctrine

  1146. of

  1147. transcendence

  1148. and for

  1149. some of

  1150. us who

  1151. are very

  1152. philosophically

  1153. inclined

  1154. for some

  1155. of us

  1156. who love

  1157. abstractions

  1158. we hear

  1159. the word

  1160. transcendence

  1161. and we

  1162. get it

  1163. but most

  1164. of us

  1165. aren't

  1166. very good

  1167. at

  1168. abstractions

  1169. and what

  1170. you need

  1171. to understand

  1172. is this

  1173. story

  1174. that

  1175. there's

  1176. God

  1177. I'm

  1178. God

  1179. and I

  1180. am

  1181. transcendent

  1182. transcendent

  1183. means I

  1184. am

  1185. completely

  1186. other

  1187. I am

  1188. completely

  1189. different

  1190. and when

  1191. you have

  1192. something

  1193. which is

  1194. completely

  1195. other

  1196. and completely

  1197. different

  1198. it means

  1199. that there's

  1200. no words

  1201. for that

  1202. because it's

  1203. other

  1204. it's

  1205. different

  1206. like if

  1207. you think

  1208. about it

  1209. for a second

  1210. if for some

  1211. reason you

  1212. wanted to

  1213. try to

  1214. communicate

  1215. to a

  1216. slug

  1217. or an

  1218. earthworm

  1219. and you

  1220. were able

  1221. to try to

  1222. get down

  1223. into the

  1224. earthworm

  1225. and try to

  1226. communicate

  1227. to the

  1228. earthworm

  1229. the difference

  1230. between you

  1231. and an

  1232. earthworm

  1233. is a

  1234. finite

  1235. distance

  1236. but the

  1237. difference

  1238. between you

  1239. and the

  1240. infinite

  1241. God

  1242. is an

  1243. infinite

  1244. distance

  1245. an

  1246. infinite

  1247. distance

  1248. and his

  1249. name is

  1250. wonderful

  1251. there's no

  1252. human

  1253. category

  1254. for it

  1255. but at

  1256. the same

  1257. time

  1258. that

  1259. God

  1260. is saying

  1261. there's no

  1262. human

  1263. category

  1264. for it

  1265. God

  1266. is with

  1267. them

  1268. he's

  1269. right there

  1270. in front

  1271. of them

  1272. he's

  1273. talking

  1274. their

  1275. language

  1276. he's

  1277. listening

  1278. to them

  1279. he's

  1280. present

  1281. and there's

  1282. this other

  1283. Christian

  1284. doctrine

  1285. to try

  1286. to describe

  1287. God

  1288. is to

  1289. say that

  1290. God

  1291. is not

  1292. just

  1293. transcendent

  1294. he's

  1295. also

  1296. imminent

  1297. and

  1298. imminent

  1299. once again

  1300. is a

  1301. very

  1302. abstract

  1303. word

  1304. and some

  1305. of us

  1306. like

  1307. abstract

  1308. words

  1309. and sort

  1310. of get

  1311. it

  1312. when we

  1313. get

  1314. an

  1315. abstract

  1316. word

  1317. just as

  1318. some

  1319. people

  1320. get how

  1321. negative

  1322. one

  1323. can

  1324. have a

  1325. square

  1326. root

  1327. and I

  1328. can't

  1329. get that

  1330. but some

  1331. get that

  1332. I can't

  1333. get that

  1334. but some

  1335. abstraction

  1336. of

  1337. imminence

  1338. but those

  1339. of you

  1340. who can't

  1341. here's how

  1342. you look

  1343. at the

  1344. story

  1345. and you

  1346. have here

  1347. this

  1348. God

  1349. being present

  1350. speaking their

  1351. language

  1352. having stooped

  1353. to them

  1354. and speaking

  1355. to them

  1356. and with

  1357. them

  1358. and answering

  1359. their prayers

  1360. at the same

  1361. time

  1362. he is

  1363. transcendent

  1364. he is

  1365. completely

  1366. and utterly

  1367. other

  1368. but more

  1369. than that

  1370. why is

  1371. he present

  1372. he's there

  1373. because he's

  1374. heard their

  1375. prayers

  1376. and he's

  1377. answering

  1378. their prayers

  1379. because he

  1380. loves them

  1381. and more

  1382. than that

  1383. he's there

  1384. not just

  1385. to reveal

  1386. himself

  1387. to them

  1388. so that

  1389. the transcendent

  1390. can be

  1391. known in

  1392. some way

  1393. in an

  1394. imminent

  1395. manner

  1396. but even

  1397. more than

  1398. that

  1399. he's come

  1400. to announce

  1401. that God

  1402. is going

  1403. to do

  1404. something

  1405. to begin

  1406. to deliver

  1407. the people

  1408. of Israel

  1409. from the

  1410. Philistines

  1411. that he's

  1412. there

  1413. to deliver

  1414. them

  1415. and in

  1416. the story

  1417. arc of

  1418. the Bible

  1419. this is

  1420. going to

  1421. ultimately

  1422. point to

  1423. Jesus

  1424. because

  1425. Samson

  1426. is the

  1427. last of

  1428. the judges

  1429. he begins

  1430. to deliver

  1431. them from

  1432. the Philistines

  1433. but who

  1434. delivers them

  1435. from the

  1436. Philistines

  1437. who delivers

  1438. them from

  1439. the Philistines

  1440. is David

  1441. but what do

  1442. we know

  1443. about David

  1444. is David

  1445. does deliver

  1446. them from

  1447. the Philistines

  1448. but he

  1449. can't deliver

  1450. himself

  1451. from himself

  1452. he murders

  1453. people

  1454. he commits

  1455. adultery

  1456. he makes

  1457. rash vows

  1458. he can deliver

  1459. the people

  1460. of Israel

  1461. from Philistines

  1462. but he can't

  1463. deliver himself

  1464. and so

  1465. David himself

  1466. points to

  1467. someone who

  1468. needs to

  1469. come after

  1470. him to

  1471. keep the

  1472. arc of

  1473. deliverance

  1474. so that

  1475. he

  1476. David points

  1477. to his

  1478. greater son

  1479. and calls

  1480. him Lord

  1481. he's pointing

  1482. to the

  1483. person of

  1484. Jesus

  1485. who ultimately

  1486. will come

  1487. to deliver

  1488. us

  1489. and has

  1490. delivered us

  1491. from all

  1492. oppression

  1493. from all

  1494. slavery

  1495. and he

  1496. begins it

  1497. by abolishing

  1498. and dealing

  1499. with our

  1500. slavery to

  1501. sin

  1502. and our

  1503. slavery to

  1504. death

  1505. by defeating

  1506. death

  1507. and that

  1508. which causes

  1509. death

  1510. and his

  1511. death upon

  1512. the cross

  1513. the transcendent

  1514. God

  1515. who is also

  1516. completely and

  1517. utterly imminent

  1518. comes and

  1519. stoops

  1520. to speak to

  1521. us

  1522. to be present

  1523. with us

  1524. to be

  1525. in Christmas

  1526. God

  1527. with

  1528. us

  1529. among

  1530. us

  1531. but still

  1532. transcendent

  1533. and with

  1534. us

  1535. to

  1536. deliver

  1537. us

  1538. you see

  1539. if such

  1540. a being

  1541. does exist

  1542. if such

  1543. a story

  1544. is true

  1545. then to

  1546. know

  1547. from his

  1548. perspective

  1549. what is

  1550. really truly

  1551. good for

  1552. me

  1553. that fits

  1554. me

  1555. that is

  1556. the answer

  1557. to my

  1558. longings

  1559. and my

  1560. yearnings

  1561. is

  1562. because

  1563. every

  1564. single

  1565. human

  1566. being

  1567. if

  1568. they

  1569. are

  1570. at

  1571. all

  1572. self

  1573. reflective

  1574. knows

  1575. that

  1576. there

  1577. is

  1578. some

  1579. things

  1580. within

  1581. them

  1582. we're

  1583. all

  1584. confused

  1585. about

  1586. some

  1587. things

  1588. within

  1589. them

  1590. which

  1591. surely

  1592. will

  1593. continue

  1594. on

  1595. and

  1596. beyond

  1597. and be

  1598. something

  1599. which

  1600. is

  1601. great

  1602. and worth

  1603. keeping

  1604. but there

  1605. are

  1606. things

  1607. within

  1608. us

  1609. that

  1610. we

  1611. need

  1612. to

  1613. be

  1614. delivered

  1615. from

  1616. and if

  1617. we're

  1618. honest

  1619. we get

  1620. confused

  1621. about it

  1622. that's

  1623. what

  1624. maturity

  1625. is

  1626. about

  1627. what we

  1628. think

  1629. we

  1630. desperately

  1631. need

  1632. at

  1633. 16

  1634. is

  1635. going

  1636. to

  1637. be

  1638. looking

  1639. very

  1640. different

  1641. we

  1642. laugh

  1643. about

  1644. it

  1645. when

  1646. we're

  1647. 26

  1648. and

  1649. laugh

  1650. about

  1651. that

  1652. when

  1653. we're

  1654. 36

  1655. and

  1656. 46

  1657. and

  1658. some

  1659. people

  1660. never

  1661. learn

  1662. to

  1663. live

  1664. perpetually

  1665. confused

  1666. and the

  1667. Christian

  1668. gospel

  1669. is not

  1670. that we

  1671. Christians

  1672. have

  1673. figured

  1674. it all

  1675. out

  1676. but it's

  1677. the

  1678. complete

  1679. opposite

  1680. we

  1681. figure

  1682. it

  1683. out

  1684. that

  1685. we

  1686. can't

  1687. figure

  1688. it

  1689. out

  1690. and

  1691. we

  1692. need

  1693. the

  1694. one

  1695. who

  1696. is

  1697. completely

  1698. transcendent

  1699. and

  1700. completely

  1701. other

  1702. yet

  1703. is

  1704. completely

  1705. imminent

  1706. and

  1707. is

  1708. imminent

  1709. and

  1710. transcendent

  1711. to

  1712. come

  1713. and

  1714. deliver

  1715. us

  1716. from

  1717. all

  1718. that

  1719. binds

  1720. us

  1721. that

  1722. in

  1723. light

  1724. of

  1725. his

  1726. great

  1727. deliverance

  1728. that

  1729. we

  1730. can

  1731. now

  1732. call

  1733. out

  1734. to

  1735. him

  1736. and

  1737. know

  1738. that

  1739. he

  1740. is

  1741. the

  1742. one

  1743. that

  1744. can

  1745. see

  1746. the

  1747. uniqueness

  1748. and

  1749. the

  1750. beauty

  1751. in

  1752. each

  1753. one

  1754. of

  1755. us

  1756. that

  1757. will

  1758. last

  1759. for

  1760. all

  1761. eternity

  1762. that

  1763. part

  1764. of

  1765. every

  1766. single

  1767. human

  1768. being

  1769. that

  1770. only

  1771. we

  1772. for

  1773. all

  1774. eternity

  1775. can

  1776. contribute

  1777. to

  1778. the

  1779. great

  1780. music

  1781. of

  1782. heaven

  1783. where

  1784. we

  1785. praise

  1786. God

  1787. and

  1788. enjoy

  1789. creation

  1790. that

  1791. unique

  1792. bit

  1793. in

  1794. every

  1795. human

  1796. being

  1797. that

  1798. is

  1799. in

  1800. heaven

  1801. that

  1802. only

  1803. we

  1804. can

  1805. contribute

  1806. that

  1807. note

  1808. that

  1809. instrument

  1810. that

  1811. melody

  1812. that

  1813. unique

  1814. thing

  1815. out of

  1816. us

  1817. from

  1818. him

  1819. from

  1820. all

  1821. eternity

  1822. only

  1823. he

  1824. can

  1825. make

  1826. clear

  1827. to

  1828. us

  1829. what

  1830. is

  1831. really

  1832. true

  1833. to

  1834. who

  1835. we

  1836. are

  1837. and

  1838. it

  1839. begins

  1840. by

  1841. accepting

  1842. Jesus

  1843. as

  1844. your

  1845. savior

  1846. and

  1847. being

  1848. grounded

  1849. in

  1850. it

  1851. knowing

  1852. that

  1853. it

  1854. will

  1855. end

  1856. with

  1857. being

  1858. in

  1859. the

  1860. presence

  1861. of

  1862. God

  1863. with

  1864. great

  1865. joy

  1866. in

  1867. a

  1868. redeemed

  1869. creation

  1870. as

  1871. part

  1872. of

  1873. a

  1874. great

  1875. choir

  1876. declaring

  1877. God's

  1878. praises

  1879. and

  1880. enjoying

  1881. it

  1882. in

  1883. a

  1884. way

  1885. which

  1886. is

  1887. just

  1888. wow

  1889. and

  1890. answers

  1891. the

  1892. longings

  1893. of

  1894. our

  1895. hearts

  1896. invite

  1897. you

  1898. to

  1899. stand

  1900. and

  1901. just

  1902. in

  1903. this

  1904. moment

  1905. it's

  1906. time

  1907. to do

  1908. a

  1909. little

  1910. bit

  1911. of

  1912. work

  1913. with

  1914. God

  1915. not

  1916. only

  1917. now

  1918. but

  1919. throughout

  1920. the

  1921. rest

  1922. of

  1923. the

  1924. service

  1925. and

  1926. for

  1927. some

  1928. who've

  1929. never

  1930. yet

  1931. given

  1932. their

  1933. lives

  1934. to

  1935. Christ

  1936. there's

  1937. no

  1938. better

  1939. time

  1940. now

  1941. than

  1942. to

  1943. call

  1944. out

  1945. to

  1946. him

  1947. and

  1948. say

  1949. Lord

  1950. be

  1951. my

  1952. deliverer

  1953. and

  1954. Lord

  1955. help

  1956. me

  1957. to

  1958. trust

  1959. that

  1960. as

  1961. you

  1962. deliver

  1963. me

  1964. as

  1965. you

  1966. have

  1967. delivered

  1968. me

  1969. in

  1970. Jesus

  1971. and

  1972. continue

  1973. deliver

  1974. me

  1975. throughout

  1976. my

  1977. life

  1978. that

  1979. you

  1980. will

  1981. be

  1982. with

  1983. me

  1984. and
