  1. Father, we ask that you would make us disciples of Jesus who are gripped by the gospel, learning to live for your glory.

  2. We give you thanks and praise, Father, that you do not whitewash over the things that we do that are wrong,

  3. and you don't whitewash over the things that other people do that are wrong,

  4. but that your gospel clearly states that they're wrong, and your gospel clearly offers us hope of redemption in the person of your Son, Jesus Christ,

  5. that in light of the gospel and in light of what he has done for us, and in light of your Son and Holy Spirit and you yourself, Father, living within us,

  6. that we will begin to have power to live in a new way as we are fit for heaven by you.

  7. So we ask that the Holy Spirit would lead and guide us into all truth as we read and think upon your word this morning.

  8. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. There's lots of people in our culture, and maybe some listening in today, maybe some of you here,

  11. that as far as they're concerned, just about any spiritual path or religious way is better than Christianity.

  12. When in movies increasingly it says it's going to be biblical,

  13. it means usually that there's going to be lots of chaos, destruction, and death.

  14. And for many of us and many of our hearts, when we look at the Bible, we see how people can see that.

  15. I have to confess to you that this time that of me preaching through Samson last week and this week and next week,

  16. it's the first time in my ordained ministry that in the sermons I've preached through Samson.

  17. And it's never part of the old lectionary.

  18. And I have to confess, I sort of, you know, maybe if I go back, if I was able to go back in time,

  19. I'd be able to hear some of the sermons in Sunday school and books and all in a different way.

  20. But it seems to me as if whenever I heard the Old Testament being preached,

  21. it usually was sort of in the form of Pilgrim's Progress, you know,

  22. where there's each person represents a certain type of a character.

  23. And they were able to get very, very good moral lessons out of it or very good practical help out of it.

  24. But I don't know, maybe it's partially that my mind is just wired the wrong way or the right way.

  25. I would read these stories and I couldn't, for the life of me,

  26. figure out how I could get a positive moral out of it.

  27. And, you know, let's just be honest.

  28. What we're going to do is we're going to have an honest looking at the story of Samson.

  29. And if we're honest, you cannot get good morals out of a guy who decides to rip off 30 people.

  30. When his plan is failed, he murders 30 people and robs from them.

  31. And it just gets, it goes downhill from there.

  32. That's not the bottom of the hill.

  33. It keeps going downhill after that.

  34. So let's turn in the Bible.

  35. We're going to look at the story ourselves.

  36. Maybe some of you as well have had fears about how to look at the Bible and the Old Testament

  37. and what God is really like and how he reveals himself.

  38. And we're going to look at this ancient story.

  39. And just in terms of the context, and by the way, last week I shared that if you were dividing these,

  40. this talks about Samson in three bits, last week could have been the birth of Samson.

  41. This week could have been Samson's battles.

  42. And I couldn't think of a word that began with B for the last bit.

  43. And somebody emailed me, Andrea Burrell.

  44. And next week it's Samson brings down the house.

  45. So there's three Bs there.

  46. Brings down the house.

  47. Anyway, so what happened last week is we're now in the,

  48. Samson is the last of the 12 judges who's recorded in the book of Judges.

  49. The time of period between Israel entering the promised land and the beginning of the kingship.

  50. And it's a time of great chaos and great unfaithfulness in Israel.

  51. And Samson is born as a judge.

  52. The people of Israel are under the oppression of this pagan seafaring nation

  53. that has occupied part of Canaan named the Philistines.

  54. And Israel is under their dominion.

  55. And a very miraculous and wonderful story happens.

  56. The angel of the Lord appears to a woman who's never been able to have children.

  57. And the angel of the Lord says, good news.

  58. In a sense, you're going to have a baby.

  59. He's going to be a boy.

  60. And God is going to use this baby boy to be the beginning by which I deliver my people Israel from the Philistines.

  61. And then he says this boy is to be so special.

  62. He is to live a very special life right from birth.

  63. He used to have the vow of a Nazarite right from birth.

  64. And in fact, it even goes into the womb.

  65. He has to have this vow, a special time of being set aside to God.

  66. And then there's a spectacular miracle that goes along with it so the husband, Minoah, and his wife understand what's going on.

  67. And then the very last words of chapter 13 is that the Spirit of God begins to move in Samson.

  68. And so, you know, especially for Christians, you're reading this and now you're prepared for this to be a really remarkable baby.

  69. Like it's hard for a Christian to read this story and not think of John the Baptist, not think of Jesus, like not think of just it's going to be a remarkable baby.

  70. And now the story continues.

  71. And here's how chapter 14 begins.

  72. Samson went down to Timnah and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines.

  73. Then he came up and told his father and mother, I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah.

  74. Now get her for me as my wife.

  75. But his father and mother said to him,

  76. Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives or among all our people that you must go and take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?

  77. But Samson said to his father,

  78. Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes.

  79. And just before I read the last verse, just pause here for a second.

  80. Some of you, maybe you're having a season right now where you're having great disappointment with God.

  81. But it's a very, very common thing, struggling with disappointment with God.

  82. And right off the bat, Samson's parents must have a great disappointment with God.

  83. And even those of us who are readers, there's a bit of a disappointment about what happens here.

  84. So here we have this special baby.

  85. And this special baby is going to be the one to begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines.

  86. And the first thing we see as Samson as an adult is not that he's going to deliver Israel from the Philistines,

  87. but he wants to marry them.

  88. Like that's the opposite.

  89. And the other thing in here, and it's just a little bit of an aside, but it's an important thing.

  90. The Bible doesn't teach ethnic or racial prejudice.

  91. In fact, it's only the Bible, out of all of the religious and intellectual texts in the world,

  92. there's no spiritual or religious tradition more than the Christian faith,

  93. which completely and utterly at a very deep level condemns all prejudice and all racism

  94. because it teaches that every human being is made in the image and likeness of God.

  95. Every man and every woman equally created in the image and likeness of God.

  96. It roots our dignity at a very, very fundamental level.

  97. This phrase about Samson's parents saying about them being uncircumcised,

  98. it's a pointer to, which I don't have time to go into,

  99. but I just want to sort of highlight it,

  100. is circumcision was a sign that you were under the God's covenant,

  101. that you were his covenant people.

  102. And non-Jews could be under the covenant by acknowledging the Lord as their Lord.

  103. Moses' wife wasn't Jewish.

  104. So the issue isn't somehow that they're different.

  105. Like, it wouldn't be as if, you know, I grew up Irish and my dad and mom say,

  106. never marry a Polish person or something like that, you know,

  107. or never marry a person who's French-Canadian or anything like that.

  108. No, it's not ethnic.

  109. The circumcision thing is this little bit of a reminder in the text

  110. that God desires his covenant people to marry other people of the covenant.

  111. It's in the New Testament, it says don't be unequally yoked.

  112. It's a whole other topic that, in a sense,

  113. a Christian should just marry another Christian.

  114. I just want to highlight it, but I don't want to go any further.

  115. You can ask me about it during the break.

  116. But the main thing that's going on here is that

  117. Samson isn't doing all what he seems to be supposed to be doing.

  118. And then it says his father and his mother, verse 4,

  119. did not know that it was from the Lord,

  120. for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines.

  121. At that time, the Philistines ruled over Israel.

  122. We're reminded that the Philistines rule over Israel.

  123. And you'll notice that just before this,

  124. it said Samson says that this woman is right in my eyes.

  125. And this idea is going to be emphasized again by Samson.

  126. Look at verse 5.

  127. Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah,

  128. and they came to the vineyards of Timnah.

  129. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring.

  130. And in the original language, it's a special word for roaring.

  131. It's the word that signals that the lion is about to attack.

  132. It's not like a dog or something or an animal making noises to scare you away.

  133. It's a word that means the lion is about to attack.

  134. Verse 6 said,

  135. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him,

  136. and although he had nothing in his hand,

  137. he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat.

  138. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

  139. Then he went and talked with the woman.

  140. Once again, she was right in Samson's eyes.

  141. Now just sort of pause here for a second.

  142. We're going to talk about this a little bit more in a moment.

  143. But you can just well imagine, for many people reading this text,

  144. they wonder,

  145. Why on earth would the Holy Spirit come upon Samson,

  146. and he does something?

  147. Like, why doesn't he just catch the lion and tie it up?

  148. Like, why doesn't he catch the lion and take it somewhere else?

  149. Like, why does he do something so unbelievably violent to the lion?

  150. Like, what is it that God's Holy Spirit would come upon Samson,

  151. and he would do something like this?

  152. I mean, that would be a very, very common thing.

  153. I mean, some of you have seen the picture of the Vegans

  154. protesting against Joe Biden.

  155. And Joe Biden's wife, you know,

  156. jumping and pushing them off the stage.

  157. I mean, like for many people in our culture,

  158. why would this Holy Spirit do that?

  159. Or allow Samson to do that?

  160. And that's a bit of a puzzle,

  161. which is only going to get deeper

  162. as we see the next two times

  163. that the Holy Spirit rushes upon Samson's life.

  164. Well, what happens next?

  165. Remember, he doesn't tell his mom and dad what happened.

  166. Verse 8.

  167. So they've gone down to Timnah.

  168. They had some talk with the family

  169. about Samson marrying the woman.

  170. They've gone back,

  171. and now they're going back again.

  172. Verse 8.

  173. After some days, Samson returned to take her,

  174. and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion,

  175. and behold, there was, in the original language,

  176. it actually says a community of bees

  177. in the body of the lion and honey.

  178. There's been a bit of a miracle.

  179. Either it's been so long that the carcass is now,

  180. there's no guts or anything,

  181. it's just bones,

  182. just a skeleton and a bit of fur,

  183. and so the bees could make a hive there.

  184. It's either been so long

  185. that there's been some type of miraculous thing.

  186. It doesn't tell us.

  187. It just is.

  188. At this point in time,

  189. it's not a carcass.

  190. It's, I mean,

  191. it's not like all bloody and everything like that.

  192. It's just the stones,

  193. and there's the bees there.

  194. And in verse 9,

  195. Samson scraped it out into his hands,

  196. some of the honey,

  197. and went on eating as he went,

  198. and he came to his father and mother

  199. and gave some to them.

  200. I think this is really gross,

  201. but then there you go.

  202. And they ate,

  203. but he did not tell them

  204. that he had scraped the honey

  205. from the carcass of the lion.

  206. And now we come, I think,

  207. to the bit that Anya read.

  208. Verse 10.

  209. They go down,

  210. and here we discover this.

  211. His father went down to the woman,

  212. and Samson prepared a feast there,

  213. for so the young men used to do.

  214. As soon as the people saw him,

  215. they brought 30 companions to be with him.

  216. And just sort of to pause here for a second,

  217. there's a bit of a subtext about this

  218. in the original language.

  219. It isn't as if the families looked around

  220. and said,

  221. let's pick 30 young guys.

  222. I think, you know,

  223. I think Samson would like to hang out with you,

  224. and I think Samson would like to hang out with you,

  225. and I think he'd like to hang out with you.

  226. No, the way to understand it is,

  227. it's military-aged males

  228. who are probably in military service,

  229. who've been taken away from military service

  230. to watch Samson.

  231. Those are the 30 companions.

  232. Okay?

  233. So they're obviously a bit concerned about Samson

  234. for whatever reason,

  235. but they pick these 30 military-aged males.

  236. In fact,

  237. it's like picking 30 corporals,

  238. and they're going to be Samson's companions.

  239. So Samson, verse 12,

  240. said to them,

  241. let me now put a riddle to you.

  242. If you can tell me what it is

  243. within the seven days of the feast

  244. and find it out,

  245. then I will give you 30 linen garments

  246. and 30 changes of clothes.

  247. But if you cannot tell me what it is,

  248. if you cannot tell me what it is,

  249. then you shall give me 30 linen garments

  250. and 30 changes of clothes.

  251. And they said to him,

  252. put your riddle that we may hear it.

  253. And he said to them,

  254. out of the eater came something to eat,

  255. out of the strong came something sweet.

  256. And in three days they could not solve the riddle.

  257. Now just pause here.

  258. This is not a good character trait of Samson.

  259. Samson's trying to rip them off.

  260. Very, very simply.

  261. He would be as if,

  262. I don't know,

  263. you know,

  264. like in Back to the Future.

  265. And when's in Back to the Future,

  266. he knows who's going to win the series games

  267. and stuff like that.

  268. So he thinks he has it all rigged.

  269. He has something that they'll never guess

  270. in a million years.

  271. And this is a chance to rip them off.

  272. That's what he's doing.

  273. And so he poses it

  274. and he's probably pretty happy with himself.

  275. But they don't take very kindly to it.

  276. Look at verse 15.

  277. In verse 15,

  278. on the fourth day,

  279. they,

  280. that is the 30 military-aged young men,

  281. the 30 corporals,

  282. said to Samson's wife,

  283. entice your husband

  284. to tell us what the riddle is.

  285. Listen to this.

  286. Lest we burn you

  287. and your father's house with fire.

  288. So,

  289. nobody in this story

  290. is going to look good.

  291. Like,

  292. it's not as if you go back

  293. and say,

  294. Samson was such a terrible man.

  295. Those Philistines were so good.

  296. No.

  297. just because they're going to lose

  298. a suit

  299. each,

  300. they threaten

  301. to burn her

  302. and her family

  303. to death.

  304. That's what they threaten.

  305. So,

  306. verse 16,

  307. and Samson's wife

  308. wept over Samson

  309. and said,

  310. you only hate me.

  311. You do not love me.

  312. You have put a riddle

  313. to my people

  314. and you have not told me

  315. what it is.

  316. And he said to her,

  317. behold,

  318. I have not told my father

  319. nor my mother

  320. and shall I tell you?

  321. As if a husband

  322. should tell his wife things.

  323. Anyway,

  324. she wept before him

  325. the seven days

  326. that their feast lasted.

  327. On the seventh day

  328. he told her

  329. because she

  330. basically wore him down.

  331. Then she told the riddle

  332. to her people.

  333. Verse 18,

  334. and the men of the city

  335. said to Samson

  336. on the seventh day

  337. before the sun went down,

  338. what is sweeter than honey?

  339. What is stronger than a lion?

  340. Samson knows what's happened.

  341. He said to them,

  342. if you had not plowed

  343. with my heifer,

  344. you would not have found out

  345. my riddle.

  346. So what does Samson do?

  347. And this is going to be

  348. even made more terrible

  349. because the Holy Spirit

  350. comes upon Samson.

  351. Look what happens.

  352. And the Spirit of the Lord

  353. rushed upon him

  354. and he went down

  355. to Ashkelon

  356. and struck down

  357. thirty men of the town

  358. and took their spoil

  359. and gave the garment

  360. to those who had told

  361. the riddle.

  362. To those who had told

  363. the riddle.

  364. In hot anger

  365. he went back

  366. to his father's house

  367. and Samson's wife

  368. was given to his companions

  369. who had been his best man.

  370. So Samson goes

  371. to another city,

  372. murders thirty men,

  373. steals their stuff,

  374. goes back,

  375. gives the stuff,

  376. and walks away angry.

  377. You can see why

  378. for many years

  379. I had problems

  380. preaching on this.

  381. Like,

  382. how do you find

  383. a good moral lesson

  384. out of this?

  385. Like,

  386. there's no good moral lesson

  387. in this.

  388. And things are going

  389. to get worse

  390. before they get better.

  391. In fact,

  392. they just keep getting worse.

  393. And once again,

  394. it's even made harder

  395. because it's the Spirit

  396. of the Lord

  397. comes upon Samson.

  398. Like,

  399. why doesn't the Spirit

  400. of the Lord

  401. come upon Samson

  402. and make him calm?

  403. Like,

  404. why doesn't it say

  405. that he could just,

  406. you know,

  407. laugh it all off

  408. or negotiate

  409. or do something?

  410. But why is it

  411. that the Spirit

  412. of the Lord

  413. comes and then

  414. he goes and murders

  415. thirty people?

  416. Well,

  417. by the way,

  418. what we're going to see

  419. here in these next verses

  420. for those of you

  421. who are dads

  422. who have more than

  423. one daughter,

  424. you're going to see

  425. what you never say

  426. to somebody else.

  427. Okay?

  428. This isn't

  429. go thou and do likewise

  430. but this is a lesson

  431. of what you never,

  432. ever,

  433. ever say.

  434. Chapter 15,

  435. verse 1.

  436. After some days

  437. at the time

  438. of the wheat harvest,

  439. so Samson thinks

  440. things have cooled down,

  441. Samson went to visit

  442. his wife

  443. with a young goat

  444. and he said,

  445. I will go into

  446. my wife in the chamber

  447. but her father

  448. would not allow him

  449. to go in

  450. and her father said,

  451. I really thought

  452. you utterly hated her

  453. so I gave her

  454. to your companion.

  455. Here's the line,

  456. is not her younger sister

  457. more beautiful than she?

  458. That's not the thing

  459. a dad should ever say

  460. about one of his daughters,

  461. period.

  462. Same thing with sons.

  463. If you have two sons,

  464. don't say,

  465. oh, bye.

  466. Take the other son,

  467. he's way better looking

  468. or way smarter

  469. or way anything.

  470. Like, you just don't say this.

  471. But anyway,

  472. that's what the dad said,

  473. okay?

  474. That's on top of the fact

  475. that it's just,

  476. the Bible isn't saying

  477. that it's alright

  478. to treat women

  479. like property.

  480. It's recording

  481. a story of people

  482. who from beginning

  483. to end

  484. are deeply morally

  485. and spiritually confused.

  486. the whole story

  487. is about people's

  488. morals,

  489. religion,

  490. spirituality

  491. is all

  492. messed up.

  493. It's messed up

  494. to messed up

  495. to messed up

  496. to messed up.

  497. Verse 3,

  498. and Samson said

  499. to her,

  500. this time I shall be

  501. innocent

  502. in regard

  503. to the Philistines

  504. when I do them harm.

  505. So what does

  506. Samson do?

  507. And by the way,

  508. lots of this story

  509. is just so much

  510. like real life.

  511. Verse 4,

  512. so Samson went

  513. and caught 300 foxes,

  514. it's really jackals,

  515. and took torches

  516. and he turned them

  517. tail to tail

  518. and put a torch

  519. between each pair

  520. of tails

  521. and when he had set

  522. fire to the torches

  523. he let the foxes

  524. go into the standing

  525. grain of the Philistines.

  526. Here's the kicker,

  527. and set fire

  528. to the stack grain

  529. and the standing grain

  530. as well as the

  531. olive orchards.

  532. So what you see here

  533. is if you go

  534. and watch a superhero movie

  535. or a superhero cartoon,

  536. what you're seeing here

  537. is the superhero villain

  538. who when his will

  539. is frustrated

  540. wreaks havoc

  541. massively,

  542. way out of proportion

  543. of what's happened.

  544. Basically what he does

  545. is he burns

  546. all of their standing grain,

  547. all of their grain reserves

  548. and all of their

  549. olive orchards,

  550. two of their

  551. most important crops,

  552. all completely

  553. and utterly demolished

  554. by Samson

  555. in his anger.

  556. So how do the Philistines

  557. respond?

  558. You see,

  559. this is a story

  560. where it just goes back

  561. and their response,

  562. the Philistines' response

  563. is completely

  564. and utterly

  565. incommensurate

  566. with what's happened

  567. and completely horrible.

  568. Verse 6,

  569. then the Philistines

  570. said,

  571. who has done this?

  572. And they said,

  573. Samson,

  574. the son-in-law

  575. of the Timnite,

  576. because the dad

  577. has taken

  578. Samson's wife

  579. and given her

  580. to Samson's companion.

  581. And the Philistines

  582. came and burned

  583. her and her father

  584. with fire.

  585. In other words,

  586. they picked a time

  587. when the whole family

  588. was in the building,

  589. they locked the doors

  590. and burned the house

  591. down on them,

  592. burning them

  593. to death.

  594. It's completely

  595. and utterly

  596. horrific.

  597. But just like

  598. in politics,

  599. just like

  600. in economics,

  601. just like

  602. with neighbors,

  603. just like

  604. with nations,

  605. just like

  606. with gangs,

  607. just like

  608. with husbands

  609. and wives

  610. or dads

  611. and sons

  612. or moms

  613. and daughters,

  614. when you get

  615. into this cycle

  616. of just

  617. vengeance

  618. upon vengeance

  619. upon vengeance

  620. upon vengeance,

  621. verse 7,

  622. Samson said

  623. to them,

  624. if this is

  625. what you do,

  626. I swear

  627. I will be

  628. avenged on you

  629. and after that

  630. I will quit.

  631. That's the motto

  632. of all

  633. escalating violence.

  634. Right?

  635. I'm going to get them,

  636. that'll be it.

  637. But the person

  638. you get,

  639. they say,

  640. one moment,

  641. that's not it,

  642. I'm going to get you.

  643. And then you say,

  644. whoa,

  645. that's not over

  646. and you get you

  647. and it just gets

  648. more and more

  649. and more and more

  650. and more out of control.

  651. And in verse 8,

  652. the English standard

  653. version

  654. is being coy.

  655. When it says

  656. he struck them

  657. hip and thigh

  658. with great blow,

  659. with a great blow,

  660. it meant he kills them.

  661. I don't know

  662. if it's the 30

  663. military-aged males,

  664. but whatever it is,

  665. he kills them.

  666. And after he kills them,

  667. he went and stayed

  668. in the cleft

  669. of the rock

  670. and eat them.

  671. So is it over?

  672. Samson thinks

  673. it's over,

  674. it's not over.

  675. What Happens Next?

  676. Well,

  677. What Happens Next

  678. is very,

  679. very,

  680. very interesting

  681. and actually,

  682. even though

  683. I've read this story

  684. many times,

  685. it was only when

  686. I studied it

  687. very closely

  688. that I realized

  689. that what happens next

  690. is actually part

  691. of helping to understand

  692. what on earth

  693. is going on

  694. in the whole story

  695. and why something

  696. so crazy

  697. would actually

  698. be in the Bible.

  699. Verse 9,

  700. then the Philistines

  701. came up and encamped

  702. in Judah

  703. and made a raid

  704. on Lehi.

  705. In other words,

  706. basically what they do

  707. is they mobilize

  708. a significant armed force

  709. and they go and invade.

  710. I mean,

  711. they already rule

  712. all of Judah.

  713. But they bring

  714. their armed forces.

  715. So it would be

  716. as if in Canada,

  717. you know,

  718. all of Canada

  719. is under our government

  720. and as if they mobilize

  721. the armed forces

  722. in Petawawa

  723. and they bring them

  724. down into Ottawa

  725. to deal with a problem.

  726. They mobilize

  727. the armed forces

  728. and that's what

  729. the Philistines do.

  730. They mobilize

  731. part of their armed forces

  732. and they bring them

  733. into the area

  734. they still control

  735. but close to where

  736. where there's

  737. a majority

  738. Jewish population

  739. and in verse 10

  740. and the men of Judah

  741. said,

  742. like just like

  743. all of a sudden

  744. we look out the door

  745. today

  746. and all of a sudden

  747. there's all these

  748. armed forces guys

  749. all around us

  750. and they have their guns out

  751. like we go out

  752. and say like

  753. what's going on?

  754. Right?

  755. Like what?

  756. Like what are you doing here?

  757. What?

  758. Like are there terrorists

  759. hiding here or something?

  760. And that's exactly

  761. how the Jewish people

  762. respond to the Philistines

  763. and the men of Judah

  764. said in verse 10

  765. why have you come up

  766. against us?

  767. It's very obvious

  768. in the original language

  769. like they're puzzled

  770. like what are you doing here?

  771. And the Philistine army

  772. says we have come up

  773. to bind Samson

  774. to do to him

  775. as he did to us.

  776. Now remember

  777. in all the way

  778. through the book of Judges

  779. if you've read it

  780. from beginning to end

  781. now that God

  782. raises up a judge

  783. and usually at some point

  784. in time the judge

  785. calls forth the army

  786. the people get emboldened

  787. the spirit of the Lord

  788. comes upon the judge

  789. the Jewish people

  790. unite around

  791. the judge

  792. that God has raised up

  793. and they go

  794. and they fight the Philistines

  795. so here we have

  796. this situation

  797. the Philistine army

  798. is there in Jewish

  799. majority territory

  800. and what do the Jewish people

  801. say?

  802. The Jewish people

  803. in effect say

  804. okay listen

  805. we'll handle this

  806. you just camp here

  807. have a good time

  808. it's a nice day

  809. to have a camp

  810. like just camp

  811. just wait here

  812. we'll mobilize

  813. our forces

  814. and we'll get

  815. Samson for you

  816. that's what happens

  817. verse 11

  818. then 3,000 men of Judah

  819. went down to the cleft

  820. of the rock

  821. of Edom

  822. and said to Samson

  823. and here in the original language

  824. as well

  825. like they're puzzled

  826. like Samson

  827. do you not know

  828. that the Philistines

  829. are rulers over us?

  830. It's not a complaining point

  831. okay

  832. would be as if

  833. like

  834. it would be as if

  835. the soldiers

  836. have gone to Toronto

  837. and the people say

  838. don't you know

  839. that Trudeau won?

  840. like why are you here?

  841. like we all voted

  842. for Trudeau

  843. like what's the problem

  844. like

  845. to Samson

  846. like

  847. our guys

  848. like our guys

  849. are the rulers

  850. Samson

  851. what's going on?

  852. do you not know

  853. that the Philistines

  854. are rulers over us?

  855. what is then

  856. that this you have done

  857. to us

  858. and he said

  859. that to them

  860. still in verse 11

  861. as they did to me

  862. so I have done to them

  863. so they make a deal

  864. with Samson

  865. and the deal is

  866. they're still going to

  867. take him back

  868. to the Philistines

  869. and look at this

  870. verse 12

  871. they said to him

  872. we have come down

  873. to bind you

  874. that we may

  875. give you into the hands

  876. of the Philistines

  877. and Samson said to them

  878. swear to me

  879. that you will not

  880. attack me yourselves

  881. they said to him

  882. no we will only bind you

  883. and give you into their hands

  884. we will surely not kill you

  885. so they bound him

  886. with two new ropes

  887. and brought him up

  888. from the rock

  889. in verse 14

  890. once again

  891. we have this odd

  892. experience

  893. of the spirit of the Lord

  894. the third time

  895. the spirit of the Lord

  896. comes with power

  897. and does the spirit of the Lord

  898. come with power

  899. to make the Philistines

  900. say we're all wrong

  901. listen we have to stop

  902. this cycle of vengeance

  903. does the spirit of the Lord

  904. come upon Samson

  905. giving great words

  906. of wisdom

  907. what happens is this

  908. verse 14

  909. when they came to Lehi

  910. the Philistines

  911. came shouting to meet him

  912. then the spirit of the Lord

  913. rushed upon him

  914. and the ropes

  915. that were on his arms

  916. became as flax

  917. that has caught fire

  918. and his bonds

  919. melted off his hands

  920. and he found

  921. the fresh jawbone

  922. of a donkey

  923. and put out his hand

  924. and took it

  925. and with it

  926. as a weapon

  927. he struck

  928. one thousand Philistine men

  929. and the struck here

  930. means he kills them

  931. and Samson said

  932. with the jawbone

  933. of a donkey

  934. heaps upon heaps

  935. with the jawbone

  936. of a donkey

  937. have I struck down

  938. a thousand men

  939. and as soon as

  940. he had finished speaking

  941. he threw away

  942. the jawbone

  943. out of his hand

  944. and that place

  945. was called Ramath

  946. Lehi

  947. so

  948. what's going on

  949. with this story

  950. I'm going to ask you

  951. a very very

  952. just a question

  953. to help us

  954. to try to figure out

  955. a little bit

  956. about what's going on

  957. in this story

  958. and why this story

  959. actually is pointing

  960. to something very wise

  961. and something

  962. which is unbelievably

  963. important

  964. for every single person

  965. to understand

  966. if they are to be

  967. made right with God

  968. first question

  969. are there any

  970. Philistines

  971. living in Ottawa

  972. today

  973. no

  974. are there

  975. Philistines

  976. in the streets

  977. of New York City

  978. no

  979. are there Jewish

  980. people in Ottawa

  981. today

  982. yes

  983. just this week

  984. I talked to

  985. an Orthodox

  986. Jewish man

  987. who's a regular

  988. one of my coffee shops

  989. we had a nice

  990. pleasant conversation

  991. are there Jewish

  992. people on

  993. the streets

  994. of New York City

  995. yes there's lots

  996. of them

  997. it's actually

  998. a very large

  999. Jewish population

  1000. where are the

  1001. Philistines today

  1002. they don't exist

  1003. there's no

  1004. Philistines left

  1005. but there are

  1006. Jewish people

  1007. one of the keys

  1008. to understanding

  1009. what's going on

  1010. in this story

  1011. is to actually

  1012. go back to

  1013. chapter 14

  1014. verse 4

  1015. chapter 14

  1016. verse 4

  1017. and here we have

  1018. this very very

  1019. odd line

  1020. his father and

  1021. mother did not

  1022. know that it was

  1023. from the Lord

  1024. this is Samson

  1025. wanting to marry

  1026. a Timnite

  1027. a Philistine

  1028. woman

  1029. for God

  1030. was seeking

  1031. opportunity

  1032. against the

  1033. Philistines

  1034. you see this

  1035. is what has

  1036. happened

  1037. we discover

  1038. that the

  1039. Philistines

  1040. if you look

  1041. at the whole

  1042. story

  1043. that for 40

  1044. years the

  1045. Philistines

  1046. had ruled

  1047. Israel

  1048. if you go

  1049. back and you

  1050. read the

  1051. story

  1052. out of all

  1053. of the

  1054. major judges

  1055. not the

  1056. minor one

  1057. out of all

  1058. the major

  1059. judges

  1060. this is the

  1061. only story

  1062. where none

  1063. of the Jewish

  1064. people call

  1065. out to God

  1066. to deliver

  1067. them

  1068. that doesn't

  1069. happen

  1070. you know

  1071. why

  1072. they like

  1073. having the

  1074. Philistines

  1075. as the

  1076. rulers

  1077. they're

  1078. becoming

  1079. Philistines

  1080. it is that

  1081. phenomenon

  1082. I don't know

  1083. if it's true

  1084. but it's in

  1085. management books

  1086. of the frog

  1087. and the kettle

  1088. at first it

  1089. felt a bit

  1090. uncomfortable

  1091. but the

  1092. Philistines

  1093. were a more

  1094. advanced

  1095. civilization

  1096. than the

  1097. Jewish

  1098. people

  1099. and it

  1100. felt funny

  1101. having them

  1102. over them

  1103. but after a

  1104. while they

  1105. grew to

  1106. like the

  1107. Philistines

  1108. they liked

  1109. their gods

  1110. they liked

  1111. the way

  1112. they lived

  1113. they liked

  1114. the way

  1115. they ran

  1116. the economy

  1117. they liked

  1118. the way

  1119. they ran

  1120. their military

  1121. they liked

  1122. their religion

  1123. they liked

  1124. their spirituality

  1125. and so

  1126. after a time

  1127. after 40 years

  1128. of Philistine

  1129. rule

  1130. they've come

  1131. to the point

  1132. in time

  1133. where they

  1134. can be

  1135. completely

  1136. and utterly

  1137. puzzled

  1138. as to why

  1139. the Philistines

  1140. would come

  1141. and ever

  1142. bring an army

  1143. against them

  1144. because we're

  1145. buddies

  1146. we're buddies

  1147. they don't

  1148. want to be

  1149. delivered from

  1150. the Philistines

  1151. they want

  1152. to become

  1153. more like

  1154. the Philistines

  1155. and if God

  1156. does not

  1157. throw a monkey

  1158. wrench

  1159. into the

  1160. situation

  1161. there will

  1162. be no

  1163. Israel

  1164. and that

  1165. means there

  1166. will be no

  1167. King David

  1168. and there

  1169. will be no

  1170. Joseph and

  1171. Mary

  1172. and there

  1173. will be no

  1174. Jesus

  1175. because Israel

  1176. will become

  1177. Philistine

  1178. and there

  1179. are no

  1180. Philistines

  1181. in the

  1182. streets of

  1183. Ottawa

  1184. or of

  1185. Toronto

  1186. or of

  1187. New York

  1188. City

  1189. but there

  1190. still are

  1191. Jewish

  1192. people

  1193. God

  1194. does

  1195. something

  1196. if God

  1197. does not

  1198. act

  1199. there will

  1200. be no

  1201. Israel

  1202. now here's

  1203. another

  1204. problem

  1205. because some

  1206. of you are

  1207. wondering

  1208. okay but

  1209. that's all

  1210. weird

  1211. just this

  1212. week I

  1213. was sitting

  1214. in a

  1215. coffee shop

  1216. and there

  1217. happened to

  1218. be an

  1219. older woman

  1220. talking to

  1221. a younger

  1222. woman right

  1223. beside me

  1224. and the

  1225. older woman

  1226. was obviously

  1227. giving advice

  1228. to the

  1229. younger woman

  1230. and the

  1231. older woman

  1232. gave very

  1233. very very

  1234. very good

  1235. advice

  1236. it's the

  1237. type of

  1238. advice we've

  1239. probably given

  1240. to other

  1241. people many

  1242. times in

  1243. our lives

  1244. she said

  1245. to the

  1246. younger

  1247. woman

  1248. I didn't

  1249. hear what

  1250. it was

  1251. I just

  1252. heard this

  1253. phrase

  1254. but I guess

  1255. the younger

  1256. woman was

  1257. telling her

  1258. the different

  1259. issues

  1260. and the

  1261. older woman

  1262. says to

  1263. her

  1264. you've got

  1265. to learn

  1266. to think

  1267. outside the

  1268. box

  1269. isn't that

  1270. the type

  1271. of advice

  1272. we give

  1273. people

  1274. you've got

  1275. yourself

  1276. trapped

  1277. in a

  1278. box

  1279. you've got

  1280. to learn

  1281. how to

  1282. think

  1283. outside

  1284. the

  1285. box

  1286. and if

  1287. you think

  1288. outside

  1289. the box

  1290. you're going

  1291. to be able

  1292. to solve

  1293. the problem

  1294. now here's

  1295. the problem

  1296. for us

  1297. why is it

  1298. good advice

  1299. for us

  1300. to tell a

  1301. human being

  1302. to think

  1303. outside the

  1304. box

  1305. but why

  1306. is it

  1307. not good

  1308. for God

  1309. to think

  1310. outside the

  1311. box

  1312. huh

  1313. but why

  1314. well you

  1315. see here's

  1316. what happens

  1317. for us

  1318. as human

  1319. beings

  1320. remember

  1321. a couple

  1322. of weeks

  1323. ago

  1324. some of

  1325. you might

  1326. or might

  1327. not

  1328. remember

  1329. I said

  1330. that the

  1331. fundamental

  1332. way

  1333. that human

  1334. beings

  1335. sort of

  1336. organize

  1337. their mental

  1338. universe

  1339. about morals

  1340. and right

  1341. and wrong

  1342. is that we

  1343. drift into

  1344. this is that

  1345. we divide

  1346. the world

  1347. into good

  1348. people

  1349. and bad

  1350. people

  1351. and most

  1352. religions

  1353. and spiritualities

  1354. keep leaning

  1355. into this

  1356. to making

  1357. the world

  1358. into good

  1359. people

  1360. and bad

  1361. people

  1362. a lot

  1363. of what

  1364. we call

  1365. spirituality

  1366. North America

  1367. basically creates

  1368. a world

  1369. where like

  1370. 95%

  1371. of us

  1372. are good

  1373. and only

  1374. 5%

  1375. or maybe

  1376. 99%

  1377. but that

  1378. evil

  1379. 1%

  1380. is bad

  1381. but we

  1382. move into

  1383. thinking of

  1384. people being

  1385. basically the

  1386. world is divided

  1387. between good

  1388. people and bad

  1389. people

  1390. and one of the

  1391. things is if you

  1392. actually read the

  1393. Bible from cover

  1394. to cover

  1395. what you discover

  1396. is that the

  1397. Bible rejects

  1398. the idea

  1399. of the world

  1400. being divided

  1401. between good

  1402. people and bad

  1403. people

  1404. and that the

  1405. Bible teaches

  1406. that the

  1407. division between

  1408. good and bad

  1409. runs down

  1410. the center of

  1411. every single

  1412. human being

  1413. the world

  1414. isn't divided

  1415. between good

  1416. people and

  1417. bad people

  1418. but we

  1419. naturally think

  1420. even when we

  1421. come to

  1422. even though we

  1423. can read that

  1424. and know that

  1425. that that's what

  1426. happens for all

  1427. have sinned and

  1428. fall short of

  1429. the glory of

  1430. God

  1431. yet we

  1432. because we

  1433. sort of run

  1434. to that

  1435. default part

  1436. of our

  1437. human brain

  1438. we read a

  1439. story

  1440. and we

  1441. start to

  1442. think that

  1443. the world

  1444. is divided

  1445. between good

  1446. people and

  1447. bad people

  1448. and in a

  1449. world where

  1450. there's good

  1451. people and

  1452. bad people

  1453. who are the

  1454. only people

  1455. that God

  1456. can work

  1457. through

  1458. good people

  1459. right

  1460. it's the

  1461. only way he

  1462. can work

  1463. we put God

  1464. in a box

  1465. because then we

  1466. have to say

  1467. whoa whoa whoa

  1468. whoa whoa

  1469. whoa whoa

  1470. one moment

  1471. here does that

  1472. mean that the

  1473. only way that

  1474. God can do

  1475. anything in the

  1476. world is wait

  1477. for good people

  1478. to decide to

  1479. do it and

  1480. then he can

  1481. come along and

  1482. help them

  1483. you see this

  1484. is the

  1485. beginning of

  1486. unbelievably good

  1487. news

  1488. Israel doesn't

  1489. want to be

  1490. delivered

  1491. Israel wants

  1492. to become

  1493. Philistine

  1494. and God

  1495. throws a

  1496. monkey wrench

  1497. right into

  1498. the center

  1499. of Israel's

  1500. plans and

  1501. completely and

  1502. utterly screws

  1503. it up and

  1504. the name of

  1505. the monkey

  1506. wrench is

  1507. Samson

  1508. by the end

  1509. of the story

  1510. Israel and

  1511. the Philistines

  1512. are separate

  1513. by the end

  1514. of chapter

  1515. 16 they're

  1516. separate

  1517. Israel is

  1518. still deeply

  1519. corrupt

  1520. you see the

  1521. fact the

  1522. matter is

  1523. the fact the

  1524. matter is

  1525. is that the

  1526. Lord is

  1527. saving Israel

  1528. despite Samson

  1529. and despite

  1530. Israel

  1531. the Lord is

  1532. saving Israel

  1533. despite Israel

  1534. he's saving

  1535. Israel despite

  1536. Samson

  1537. it's a

  1538. beyond this

  1539. the topic of

  1540. this sermon

  1541. but only the

  1542. Christian worldview

  1543. helps us to

  1544. understand how

  1545. it is that God

  1546. can be completely

  1547. and utterly

  1548. free and

  1549. Samson is

  1550. completely and

  1551. utterly free

  1552. and at the

  1553. same time that

  1554. Samson is

  1555. completely and

  1556. utterly free

  1557. like you go

  1558. back and you

  1559. look at it

  1560. later on you

  1561. look at verse

  1562. three and

  1563. verse seven

  1564. Samson's doing

  1565. what is right

  1566. in my eyes

  1567. but at the

  1568. same time that

  1569. Samson is doing

  1570. what is right in

  1571. my eyes God

  1572. is doing what

  1573. is right for

  1574. Israel and

  1575. for you and

  1576. me at a

  1577. very very very

  1578. deep level

  1579. the Lord

  1580. saving Israel

  1581. despite Samson

  1582. and despite

  1583. Israel and

  1584. here's the

  1585. truth the

  1586. Lord saves

  1587. me despite

  1588. me and the

  1589. Lord saves

  1590. you despite

  1591. you despite

  1592. you he saves

  1593. you while

  1594. we were still

  1595. sinners Christ

  1596. came while

  1597. we were dead

  1598. Christ comes

  1599. while we were

  1600. his enemies

  1601. Christ comes

  1602. when we had

  1603. all turned our

  1604. back on him

  1605. Christ comes

  1606. for all he

  1607. comes despite

  1608. us to save

  1609. us sometimes

  1610. some of the

  1611. monkey wrenches

  1612. in our lives

  1613. is God

  1614. trying to get

  1615. our attention

  1616. so that we

  1617. will return

  1618. to him

  1619. you see at

  1620. no point in

  1621. time in the

  1622. book does it

  1623. say that what

  1624. Samson done

  1625. is right

  1626. the Bible

  1627. very clearly

  1628. teaches that

  1629. the end

  1630. never justifies

  1631. the means

  1632. it's one of the

  1633. ways that the

  1634. biblical worldview

  1635. is completely

  1636. different from

  1637. almost all moral

  1638. reasoning in

  1639. mainstream Canadian

  1640. thought because

  1641. in the very heart

  1642. of all mainstream

  1643. Canadian thought

  1644. the end justifies

  1645. the means

  1646. in the Bible

  1647. the end never

  1648. justifies the

  1649. means

  1650. never justifies

  1651. the means

  1652. so what is

  1653. God doing

  1654. God isn't

  1655. defensive

  1656. he's not

  1657. passive

  1658. he's not

  1659. waiting until

  1660. Israel decides

  1661. they want to

  1662. seek him

  1663. they're sinking

  1664. into a place

  1665. where they will

  1666. they don't want

  1667. that at all

  1668. but God

  1669. still loves

  1670. them

  1671. so he

  1672. invades

  1673. he invades

  1674. you see

  1675. true grace

  1676. saving grace

  1677. invades

  1678. evil

  1679. against

  1680. evil

  1681. for the

  1682. true good

  1683. of the

  1684. person

  1685. cheap grace

  1686. God

  1687. whitewashes

  1688. whitewashes

  1689. over evil

  1690. baptizes

  1691. evil

  1692. and tells

  1693. you it's

  1694. all fine

  1695. but true

  1696. grace

  1697. saving grace

  1698. costly grace

  1699. invades

  1700. evil

  1701. and deals

  1702. with evil

  1703. for the

  1704. true ultimate

  1705. good

  1706. and so what

  1707. we see here

  1708. is that God

  1709. uses the

  1710. freedom of

  1711. Samson to

  1712. begin to

  1713. deliver Israel

  1714. from the

  1715. Philistines

  1716. and it

  1717. points to

  1718. this profound

  1719. invasion

  1720. against our

  1721. will that

  1722. happens in

  1723. the person

  1724. of Jesus

  1725. I mean if

  1726. you go back

  1727. and read the

  1728. Gospels

  1729. it's quite

  1730. remarkable

  1731. it's very

  1732. clear that

  1733. his own

  1734. do not

  1735. receive him

  1736. the people

  1737. in a sense

  1738. just like in

  1739. Samson's case

  1740. the people who

  1741. should rejoice

  1742. that God

  1743. has brought a

  1744. true and

  1745. greater Samson

  1746. to come

  1747. to deliver

  1748. not just

  1749. Israel

  1750. but all

  1751. people

  1752. Philistines

  1753. and Romans

  1754. and Irish

  1755. and Polish

  1756. and French

  1757. and African

  1758. and Chinese

  1759. and all

  1760. people that

  1761. God

  1762. in the person

  1763. of Jesus

  1764. God invades

  1765. the fallen

  1766. world

  1767. God comes

  1768. from outside

  1769. the created

  1770. order into

  1771. the order

  1772. that he

  1773. himself created

  1774. and he

  1775. comes from

  1776. outside into

  1777. the created

  1778. order and he

  1779. comes when

  1780. nobody's seeking

  1781. him when nobody

  1782. wants a savior

  1783. like that and he

  1784. comes despite

  1785. our sin and he

  1786. comes and bears

  1787. our sin and it's

  1788. all an invasion

  1789. that comes from

  1790. the loving heart

  1791. of God for

  1792. our true good

  1793. when our backs

  1794. were turned to

  1795. him our fists

  1796. were raised to

  1797. him our ears

  1798. were closed to

  1799. him our mind

  1800. and heart was

  1801. hardened to

  1802. him our will

  1803. was completely

  1804. rock solid I

  1805. will never bow

  1806. to him in such

  1807. a situation

  1808. Jesus comes

  1809. to save

  1810. we'll talk about

  1811. it more next

  1812. week but in

  1813. Samson you see

  1814. all the sin of

  1815. Israel but it's

  1816. not redemptive

  1817. in Jesus you

  1818. see all the sin

  1819. of the world

  1820. laid on him

  1821. and at the

  1822. heart of the

  1823. invasion is

  1824. that he invades

  1825. to be both

  1826. sinless but bear

  1827. the sin of the

  1828. world your sin

  1829. and mine for

  1830. your good and

  1831. mine please

  1832. stand

  1833. bow our heads

  1834. in prayer

  1835. for some of us

  1836. some of us

  1837. our outward

  1838. lives look very

  1839. ordered but our

  1840. inward lives are

  1841. maybe just as

  1842. completely and

  1843. utterly chaotic and

  1844. filled with vengeance

  1845. and anger as we

  1846. see in Samson

  1847. and if you are

  1848. here in this

  1849. situation today

  1850. then this is a

  1851. profoundly important

  1852. story for you

  1853. because you see in

  1854. God's word that

  1855. God knows deeply

  1856. your internal chaos

  1857. and anger and

  1858. cycles of vengeance

  1859. and not letting go

1860. and God sees it at a

  1861. very deep level

  1862. because it's in his

1863. word and some of you

  1864. might even be it's

  1865. you've hidden it from

  1866. others and you've

  1867. hidden it from us

  1868. but you're in fact

  1869. not just your inner

  1870. life but your outer

  1871. life is consumed

  1872. with chaos and

  1873. self-centeredness and

  1874. vengeance and this

  1875. shows that God

  1876. understands it

1877. and for all of us

  1878. in different ways

1879. the word will hit us

  1880. in different ways

  1881. we'll maybe come

  1882. face to face with

  1883. how we're putting

  1884. God in a box

  1885. and our

  1886. disappointments come

  1887. because not because

  1888. God is ever

  1889. disappointing in

  1890. himself or the

  1891. gospel is ever

  1892. disappointing but

  1893. because our boxes

  1894. our boxes are

  1895. entrapping us

  1896. our boxes are

  1897. really that pot

  1898. of water and we

  1899. are the frog and

  1900. the kettle is

  1901. the water's gotten

  1902. warmer and warmer

  1903. and we don't realize

  1904. that we're so locked

1905. in our box that we

  1906. don't see the glory

  1907. of the goodness and

  1908. the love of God

  1909. and his perfect

  1910. providence and

  1911. sovereignty and our

  1912. freedom and his

  1913. love to invade into

  1914. evil for our good

  1915. and we're so trapped
