  1. Here at Church of the Messiah, we preach through books of the Bible, and what I'm going to continue to do,

  2. while God gives me strength until Jesus comes back, and while I'm still the rector of this place,

  3. we're going to preach through books of the Bible, and we're going through Judges,

  4. which is what I'm going to preach on today.

  5. But by the providence of God, the text that we look at today actually has an awful lot to say about our current crisis in Canada,

  6. and I won't say, and in many parts of the world.

  7. By the providence of God, it has a lot to say.

  8. Judges 16 has a lot to say about what's going on in Canada and how we are reacting to it.

  9. So I encourage you to turn to it, and just as you're turning to Judges 16, just a couple of things.

  10. Judges is that book in the Bible which covers the time between Israel entering the Promised Land under Joshua.

  11. Joshua has died, and the time between his death and basically the first kings of Israel, Saul and then David.

  12. That time period is the time period covered in the book of Judges.

  13. And Samson, the book of Judges, is organized around 12 judges, and Samson is the last of the judges.

  14. And next week and the week after, we look at the two-part conclusion to the book.

  15. And Samson, I mean, he's one of the characters that many non-Christians know about him and know about Samson and Delilah.

  16. And that's what we're going to look at today, the story of Samson and Delilah.

  17. But here's the interesting thing.

  18. If you go back or if you remember, in Chapter 13, we see the first part.

  19. We see the birth of Samson.

  20. And we see both quite a remarkable miracle that authenticates that God's going to use this man.

  21. He says very directly, God is going to use this boy that will be born to begin to deliver Israel, God's people, from their enemies, from those who oppress them, from the idols and gods that bind them.

  22. And then in the birth story, we see that the Holy Spirit begins to move in Samson's life as he grows up.

  23. And we have very, very high hopes for him.

  24. But then in Chapter 14 and 15, which is the second part of the Samson story, all of those hopes are dashed.

  25. It's actually, I think I was sharing with you last week that for many, many years, I had fears about trying to preach on the Old Testament.

  26. Because I sort of grew up in a church context that we're always trying to find good moral lessons from the Old Testament stories.

  27. But if you're intellectually honest, you can't find good moral lessons from Chapter 14 and 15.

  28. Samson's a despicable man.

  29. And in fact, part of the mystery of the story is that the Holy Spirit comes upon Samson and he uses, the Holy Spirit's power comes upon Samson, but Samson uses that power for evil.

  30. I mean, it begins with Samson going to get married to a Philistine.

  31. I mean, rather than delivering people, Israel, from the Philistines, he wants to marry them.

  32. And he figures out a way to rip off his 30 companions who are Philistines by telling them a riddle.

  33. And after that attempt to rip them off fails, he goes to pay off his debt.

  34. And then he goes to another city and murders 30 innocent people and steals their clothes to pay off the debt.

  35. And then it gets worse.

  36. There's this cycle of vengeance and he kills other people and his people betray him.

  37. And he kills a thousand people with a jawbone.

  38. Just every time the Holy Spirit comes upon him, in a sense, Samson uses his free will to use that spirit's power for violent, selfish ends.

  39. And now we come to chapter 16, the end of the stories of Samson.

  40. It's the story that we'll talk about the death of Samson.

  41. And here's how it begins.

  42. Chapter 16, verse 1.

  43. Samson went to...

  44. Oh, I should put up the scripture text.

  45. We can do that for those of you who are here and don't have Bibles.

  46. There we go.

  47. Samson went to Gaza and there he saw a prostitute and he went into her.

  48. Just pause here for a very fraction of a second.

  49. And I haven't mentioned this, but I'm going to mention it right now.

  50. Christians, just by being Christians and trusting the Bible, end up having a side on the Palestinian Jewish question.

  51. Because for many of the Palestinian leadership in around what we now call in the Canaan area,

  52. and I'm trying to think of the right word.

  53. The word's gone from me.

  54. In that whole contested area, they basically say that the Jewish people have no historic connection to the land.

  55. And these texts that we're going through, just by being intellectually honest,

  56. show that, in fact, the Jewish people have had a connection to this land that goes back thousands and thousands of years.

  57. We, in a sense, just by trying to be...

  58. By being intellectually honest and being faithful to the Bible, both at the same time,

  59. we end up undercutting one particular side of a current political debate and supporting another side.

  60. Doesn't mean we have to support everything else that goes on.

  61. But the Philistines aren't Arabs.

  62. The Philistines are, if you know a little bit about English history,

  63. in the British Isles, what is now called England,

  64. there were these constant raids by the Norsemen, the Danes.

  65. And they would come to England and they would pillage and steal,

  66. eventually setting up more permanent settlements.

  67. But the Philistines are like the ancient Vikings.

  68. They're a sea people.

  69. And they're not Arabs.

  70. They're a sea people.

  71. And they've come from somewhere in the Mediterranean.

  72. They come in waves to steal, to set up their own colonies.

  73. And at the time of this writing, there's sort of five different groups of Philistines,

  74. five sort of families or tribes or movements,

  75. and they each have a center of power.

  76. And Gaza is one of the five centers.

  77. So these are like Vikings.

  78. They're seafaring invaders somewhere in the Mediterranean,

  79. not entirely clear where they've come from.

  80. And they've settled here in Gaza.

  81. Go back to read chapter 16, verse 1 again.

  82. Samson went to Gaza, and there he saw a prostitute.

  83. Remember I told you, this man doesn't live an exemplary life.

  84. And he went into her.

  85. The Gazites were told, Samson has come here.

  86. And they surrounded the place and set an ambush for him all night at the gate of the city.

  87. They kept quiet all night, saying, let us wait till the light of the morning,

  88. and then we will kill him.

  89. But Samson lay till midnight.

  90. And at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two posts

  91. and pulled them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders

  92. and carried them to the top of the hill that is in front of Hebron.

  93. Now, here's what's going on in the story.

  94. It's very, very important.

  95. The Philistines hate Samson.

  96. They keep attacking him.

  97. They're trying to find him.

  98. They want to kill him.

  99. And Samson goes right into one of their principal cities,

  100. inside a walled city with a closed gate.

  101. And he goes there just because he wants to satisfy his desire for sexual intercourse.

  102. I mean, this is an unbelievably foolish and reckless thing to do.

  103. And it comes, it's a little bit of a picture, a window into the soul of Samson.

  104. Samson is arrogant in his power,

  105. and he believes he is too strong to ever fail,

  106. too strong to ever be defeated,

  107. too strong to ever have his world collapse.

  108. And the story shows his great strength.

  109. The archaeological evidence from the time period suggests that in a walled city like this,

  110. the gates were two stories high.

  111. So I don't know how high that would be.

  112. It might be at the top of the arch here from the bottom to the arch.

  113. Two huge gates.

  114. And he picks them up and he carries them 75 kilometers.

  115. It's an unbelievable, well, I shouldn't say unbelievable.

  116. It's an immense feat of strength.

  117. And for his attackers, it must have just been a jaw-dropping,

  118. gobsmacking, mind-blowing demonstration of his great power.

  119. Which is why they don't attack him.

  120. They just look at this.

  121. He just rips these massive gates out of the way they're held

  122. and carries them 75 kilometers and drops them in the middle of a Jewish majority area.

  123. And in doing this, he's also completely and utterly humiliated the principal city of the Philistines.

  124. A walled city without a gate is, in a sense, defenseless.

  125. He's shamed them, he's humiliated them, and he's profoundly weakened them

  126. until they're able to finally try to get those gates either back

  127. or fix them themselves back and fix them.

  128. So part of the story is showing the fact is he does have this unbelievable strength and power,

  129. yet at the same time that goes with it, he has this arrogant belief

  130. that he is too strong to fail, too strong to be defeated,

  131. too strong to ever have his world collapse.

  132. And because he is so strong and so powerful,

  133. he can do whatever he wants in his own world.

  134. And if he feels like going into a walled city of his enemies

  135. because he has a sexual need that he wants to gratify with a prostitute,

  136. he'll do it.

  137. And to common morality and to God be,

  138. well, I don't care because I'm strong, I'm powerful,

  139. and my world will never collapse.

  140. It's in this context, you see, one of the things which is so wise about the Bible

  141. is the Bible continues to have these profound stories that are,

  142. if we read them, are meditations upon the mystery of arrogance

  143. and the mystery of strength and the mystery of power.

  144. They're profound meditations and stories which help us to think

  145. about arrogance and power and people who don't think their world can collapse.

  146. So right after this remarkable display of strength,

  147. Delilah is introduced.

  148. Verse 4,

  149. After this, he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek,

  150. which is in Philistine-majority territory,

  151. whose name was Delilah.

  152. And the lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her,

  153. seduce him and see where his great strength lies

  154. and by what means we may overpower him,

  155. that we may bind him to humble him.

  156. And we will each give you 1,100 pieces of silver.

  157. So Delilah said to Samson,

  158. please tell me where your great strength lies

  159. and how you might be bound,

  160. that one could subdue you.

  161. And in the original language,

  162. it's very clear that there are five principal tribes

  163. or movements or centers of Philistine power,

  164. and it's describing all of them.

  165. So it's all five of the lords,

  166. and whatever sub-lords and under-lords that there are,

  167. it's the lords as a whole

  168. of all of the Philistines who come together

  169. to speak to Delilah

  170. to see if they can figure out a way

  171. to overcome him.

  172. So he thinks he's too powerful

  173. and too strong to collapse,

  174. but he doesn't realize that his doom is upon him.

  175. It begins as yet just another sexual conquest

  176. on his part.

  177. He doesn't think of Delilah seducing him.

  178. He thinks of it as yet another sexual conquest

  179. to satisfy his appetites.

  180. Well, what happens?

  181. We're just going to read the first one

  182. because, and we're not going to read all three of them,

  183. but there comes to be three different sort of moments

  184. with Samson and Delilah

  185. where Delilah bugs Samson.

  186. Well, let's look at this story,

  187. and I'll tell you what they are.

  188. Samson said to her, verse 7,

  189. if they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings,

  190. blah, blah, blah, blah,

  191. bowstrings that have not been dried,

  192. then I shall become weak and be like any other man.

  193. And if you go on later on,

  194. it's going to be the same thing happens.

  195. Next, it's going to be if you take some ropes

  196. that have never been used,

  197. and then after that is if you weave my hair

  198. in a certain way and hold it with a certain type of pin.

  199. But it's always the same thing.

  200. So he says if you do all of these things,

  201. and here's the really important thing.

  202. It's going to be important later on,

  203. and I'll mention it,

  204. but notice what he says again in verse 7.

  205. If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings

  206. that have not been dried,

  207. then I shall become weak and be like any other man.

  208. This phrase is going to be repeated four times.

  209. I shall become weak and be like any other man.

  210. But she goes ahead.

  211. Verse 8,

  212. Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her

  213. seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried,

  214. just as they'll later on bring ropes

  215. and a man to weave his hair.

  216. And she bound him with them.

  217. Now she had men lying in ambush in an inner chamber,

  218. and she said to him,

  219. The Philistines are upon you, Samson.

  220. But he snapped the bowstrings as a thread of flax

  221. snaps when it touches the fire,

  222. so the secret of his strength was not known.

  223. And this thing's going to happen three times.

  224. And once again,

  225. see this is where the Bible is this,

  226. through this simple story,

  227. it invites us to enter into a profound meditation

  228. upon arrogance and power

  229. and the blindness that comes with arrogance and power.

  230. Like, for any single one of us,

  231. if we had a friend,

  232. and they told you of the first story,

  233. you'd say to them,

  234. one moment,

  235. like, time out.

  236. Your girlfriend or your boyfriend,

  237. they tried to weasel out

  238. one of the deepest secrets of your life,

  239. and then they used it to betray you,

  240. so that people could capture you

  241. and destroy you?

  242. And then the next day you went back to her or him?

  243. Like, what's wrong with this picture?

  244. You see,

  245. Samson's arrogance

  246. and his belief in his power

  247. is making him weak.

  248. So if you just skip down,

  249. skip down after it's happened three times

  250. and we skip down to verse 15,

  251. and here's how it goes.

  252. I have to turn the page.

  253. So now,

  254. verse 15,

  255. and she said to him

  256. after the third time

  257. that it hasn't worked,

  258. how can you say I love you

  259. when your heart is not with me?

  260. You have mocked me these three times

  261. and you have not told me

  262. where your great strength lies.

  263. And when she pressed him hard with her words

  264. day after day

  265. and urged him,

  266. his soul was vexed to death.

  267. And he told her all his heart

  268. and said to her,

  269. a razor has never come upon my head,

  270. for I have been a Nazarite to God

  271. from my mother's womb.

  272. If my head is shaved,

  273. then my strength will leave me

  274. and I shall become weak

  275. the fourth time

  276. and I shall become weak

  277. and be like any other man.

  278. Now,

  279. one of the things here about this,

  280. we're going to talk about this

  281. a tiny bit more.

  282. It's not,

  283. we shouldn't believe Samson here

  284. because the fact of the matter is

  285. is that he's been violating

  286. his Nazarite vows constantly.

  287. I mean,

  288. the fact of the matter is

  289. he's having sex with a woman

  290. he's not married with,

  291. which violates

  292. his Nazarite vows.

  293. He's been drinking

  294. and getting drunk

  295. and he's been not only,

  296. how do we know

  297. he's got to touch dead bodies?

  298. Because he killed the people

  299. and you can't kill them

  300. without touching a dead body.

  301. Like,

  302. his whole life

  303. has been a complete

  304. and utter

  305. disregard of the Nazarite vows

  306. and it's not as if,

  307. this story isn't as if,

  308. isn't about,

  309. that it isn't a story

  310. about religion.

  311. You see,

  312. how religion works

  313. is it's all right

  314. if you do this

  315. and you do this

  316. and you do this

  317. but you can't get your hair cut.

  318. What?

  319. Like,

  320. that's not what the Bible teaches.

  321. That God's sort of happy with him

  322. or doesn't have any consequences

  323. to his action

  324. but if he gets his hair cut

  325. then there's consequences.

  326. No.

  327. It's going to become obvious

  328. in the next little bit.

  329. Look what happens.

  330. I move it along.

  331. Andrew,

  332. help me if I didn't move it correctly

  333. because sometimes

  334. I press the button

  335. and it doesn't work.

  336. So what happens?

  337. He tells her

  338. what he thinks is going on

  339. and then in verse 18,

  340. when Delilah saw

  341. that he had told her

  342. all his heart,

  343. she sent and called

  344. the lords of the Philistines

  345. saying,

  346. come up again

  347. for he has told me

  348. all his heart.

  349. Now,

  350. he has told her

  351. all his heart,

  352. by the way,

  353. but that's,

  354. it's not dependent

  355. upon that.

  356. Then the lords

  357. of the Philistines

  358. came up to her

  359. and brought the money

  360. in their hands.

  361. She made him sleep

  362. on her knees

  363. and she called a man

  364. and had him shave off

  365. the seven locks

  366. of his head.

  367. Then she began

  368. to torment him

  369. and his strength

  370. left him.

  371. And she said,

  372. the Philistines

  373. are upon you,

  374. Samson.

  375. And he woke

  376. from his sleep

  377. and said,

  378. I will go out

  379. as at other times

  380. and shake myself free.

  381. But he did not know

  382. that the Lord

  383. had left him.

  384. Now,

  385. just sort of notice here

  386. how the story works.

  387. It isn't when his hair

  388. is cut

  389. that his strength

  390. leaves him.

  391. It's after his hair

  392. is cut

  393. as she torments him.

  394. And then we discover

  395. that it's all about

  396. the Lord leaving him,

  397. that his strength

  398. is gone.

  399. So the fact of the matter

  400. is,

  401. is his great strength

  402. was never his.

  403. It was never his.

  404. It was the Lord's presence

  405. that made him strong.

  406. It was the Lord's blessing.

  407. It was the Lord's gift.

  408. It was the Lord's

  409. undeserved favor

  410. to him

  411. that made him strong.

  412. He was made strong

  413. so he would deliver Israel

  414. and he has not done that

  415. with his strength.

  416. He's used his strength

  417. to show off,

  418. to be arrogant.

  419. And his strength

  420. has led him,

  421. the blessing of God

  422. has led him

  423. to the belief

  424. that he,

  425. his world,

  426. can never collapse.

  427. He can never be defeated.

  428. His plans will always work.

  429. And the Lord's blessing

  430. has led him

  431. to puff himself up

  432. in such a way

  433. without ever understanding

  434. that it came from the Lord,

  435. not from him.

  436. And the fact of the matter is,

  437. is he is weak

  438. like any other man.

  439. He is frail

  440. and mortal

  441. like every other

  442. human being.

  443. And so the hair is cut,

  444. she torments him,

  445. then the spirit leaves,

  446. and then we discover

  447. the reason

  448. is that the Lord

  449. has left him.

  450. And then we see

  451. the terrible state

  452. that his arrogance

  453. has brought him.

  454. Look at verse 21.

  455. And the Philistines

  456. seized him

  457. and gouged out his eyes

  458. and brought him down

  459. to Gaza

  460. and bound him

  461. with bronze shackles

  462. and he ground

  463. at the mill

  464. and the prison.

  465. But the hair of his head

  466. began to grow again

  467. after it had been shaved.

  468. Now once again,

  469. the issue isn't the hair.

  470. The issue here is,

  471. those some of you

  472. might remember

  473. if you heard me

  474. preach last week,

  475. is that if you look

  476. at the chapter 14 and 15,

  477. nobody comes out

  478. good in the stories.

  479. The Philistines

  480. don't come out good either.

  481. It's not as if

  482. this is a story

  483. about these nasty Israelites

  484. or this powerful Israelite

  485. and the Philistines

  486. are all very,

  487. very humble and godly.

  488. No, everybody in that story

  489. looks terrible.

  490. And the same thing is here.

  491. As we're going to see,

  492. this thing about

  493. the hair growing long

  494. is a bridge thing

  495. which is what's going

  496. to happen next

  497. and it shows

  498. that in fact

  499. the Philistines

  500. are just as arrogant

  501. and believe

  502. that their God

  503. means that

  504. they have a God

  505. that gives them power

  506. which means that

  507. their world

  508. won't collapse.

  509. And so they can be

  510. completely and utterly

  511. disregarding of things

  512. like hair.

  513. Why?

  514. Because,

  515. as we're going to see

  516. in a moment,

  517. it's because they have

  518. a far more powerful God

  519. and they're far more powerful

  520. and technologically

  521. advanced people

  522. and so their world

  523. can never collapse.

  524. They will ultimately

  525. triumph over all

  526. of their enemies

  527. and this text

  528. is a bridge

  529. not to make you think

  530. there's something magic

  531. about long hair

  532. but to show

  533. that the arrogance

  534. and the problem

  535. of believing

  536. that your world

  537. can never collapse

  538. is a human problem.

  539. It's a human problem.

  540. See what happens next.

  541. Verses,

  542. so Samson's humble.

  543. Verse 23.

  544. Now the lords

  545. of the Philistines,

  546. it's the same type

  547. of idea

  548. that I mentioned earlier

  549. with Delilah.

  550. It's all of the lords

  551. and the underlords.

  552. The lords of the Philistines

  553. gathered

  554. to offer a great sacrifice

  555. to Dagon,

  556. their God,

  557. and to rejoice

  558. and they said,

  559. just by the way,

  560. just before I read this,

  561. you know,

  562. you don't have to read

  563. Christopher Hitchens

  564. to have a great critique

  565. of religion.

  566. The best critique

  567. of religion

  568. in the world

  569. is the Bible.

  570. The Bible

  571. constantly critiques

  572. religion

  573. and here's how

  574. it critiques religion.

  575. Just listen to it.

  576. I'll read verse 23 again.

  577. Now the lords

  578. of the Philistines,

  579. now the lords

  580. of the Philistines

  581. gathered together

  582. to offer a great sacrifice

  583. to Dagon,

  584. their God,

  585. and to rejoice.

  586. They said,

  587. our God

  588. has given Samson

  589. our enemy

  590. into our hand.

  591. You know,

  592. because religion

  593. is just used

  594. for your own power.

  595. That's why

  596. they worship Dagon

  597. because he makes

  598. them more powerful.

  599. They think

  600. they're special.

  601. Isn't that the critique

  602. of Christopher Hitchens?

  603. People believe

  604. these fairy tales

  605. about gods

  606. but it's all about hypocrisy.

  607. It's all about their power.

  608. It's all about

  609. looking down

  610. their nose of people

  611. and that's just

  612. what the Bible's teaching.

  613. It's revealing

  614. the religious spirit,

  615. the spiritual spirit

  616. of the human problem.

  617. And it's emphasized.

  618. Look at verse 24.

  619. And when the people

  620. saw him,

  621. that's Samson,

  622. they praised their God

  623. for they said again,

  624. our God

  625. has given

  626. our enemy

  627. into our hand.

  628. the ravager

  629. of our country

  630. who has killed

  631. many of us

  632. and when their hearts

  633. were merry

  634. they said,

  635. call Samson

  636. that he may entertain us.

  637. So they called Samson

  638. out of the prison

  639. and he entertained them

  640. and they made him stand

  641. between the pillars

  642. in the very,

  643. very central place.

  644. So we here have

  645. in a very subtle way

  646. a critique

  647. of religion.

  648. And now we see this

  649. once again

  650. just as in Samson

  651. and he meets Delilah

  652. who's just a woman.

  653. I mean,

  654. this isn't being sexist

  655. but this is just

  656. imagine,

  657. like just imagine

  658. a guy who's strong enough.

  659. Just picture the most

  660. macho guys

  661. you see portrayed.

  662. A guy able to pick up

  663. two story things

  664. and carry them 75 kilometers.

  665. What does he have to worry about?

  666. A mere woman.

  667. Smaller than him.

  668. Weaker than him.

  669. And we see here

  670. that the lords

  671. of the Philistines

  672. do not know

  673. that their doom

  674. is upon them.

  675. They see a man

  676. who's weak

  677. like any other man

  678. who has had his eyes

  679. gouged out

  680. that they can humiliate him

  681. in public

  682. and they can make

  683. merry of him

  684. and they can laugh at him

  685. and they do not realize

  686. that their God

  687. is not real

  688. and their arrogance

  689. is masking

  690. the reality

  691. that they

  692. are weak

  693. and frail

  694. like every

  695. other human being.

  696. look what it says

  697. verse

  698. did I move it?

  699. 26?

  700. Yes.

  701. And Samson said

  702. to the young man

  703. who held him by the hand

  704. let me feel the pillars

  705. on which the house rests

  706. that I may lean against them.

  707. The house was full

  708. of men and women

  709. all the lords

  710. of the Philistines

  711. were there

  712. and on the roof

  713. there were about

  714. 3,000 men and women

  715. who looked on

  716. while Samson entertained.

  717. And to try to put it

  718. in the context of Canada

  719. it's imagine

  720. that you have

  721. the cabinet

  722. and in fact

  723. you have the house

  724. of commons

  725. you have the senate

  726. you have the supreme court

  727. you have the privy council

  728. you have the editors

  729. and the owners

  730. and the producers

  731. of the elite media

  732. you have the elite

  733. academics of the country

  734. you have the elite

  735. business people

  736. of the country

  737. and those are

  738. who are all there

  739. and not just for Gaza

  740. but for all five.

  741. all five

  742. of the centers

  743. of Philistine power

  744. they're all there

  745. and their key officials

  746. and their family

  747. 3,000 of them

  748. all of the elites

  749. of the elite

  750. are all there

  751. to mock Samson.

  752. And now we have

  753. this very very simple

  754. and often very misunderstood verse.

  755. Then Samson called

  756. to the Lord

  757. and said

  758. O Lord God

  759. please remember me

  760. and please strengthen me

  761. only this once

  762. O God

  763. that I may be avenged

  764. on the Philistines

  765. from my two eyes.

  766. Now just before

  767. I try to open

  768. this text up

  769. and it's not going

  770. to be on the screen

  771. those of you

  772. who actually have

  773. Bibles in your hand

  774. turn to Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  775. Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11:32

  776. verse 32

  777. and I haven't talked

  778. about this at all

  779. but it's always been

  780. in the back of my mind

  781. and I knew

  782. as I was preparing these

  783. looking through

  784. the three stories

  785. of Samson

  786. that I was going

  787. to eventually deal

  788. with it

  789. and probably today

  790. and I am dealing

  791. with it today.

  792. Those of you

  793. who have remembered

  794. how I've summarized

  795. Samson

  796. how he uses his power

  797. to murder innocent people

  798. steal their clothes

  799. wage war

  800. how he's a despicable

  801. human being

  802. look at this

  803. very very odd verse

  804. Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11:32

  805. verse 32

  806. and Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  807. for those of you

  808. who don't know

  809. the Bible very well

  810. or you're just listening

  811. in for the first time

  812. because you're puzzled

  813. about the Christian faith

  814. Hebrews 11

  815. is the famous chapter

  816. on what faith is

  817. and heroes of the faith

  818. and look what it says

  819. and what more shall I say

  820. for time would fail

  821. to tell me

  822. he's talking about

  823. heroes of the faith

  824. of Gideon Barak

  825. Samson

  826. what?

  827. how does he make it

  828. on the list?

  829. this guy who murders

  830. innocent people

  831. heaps on the list?

  832. read it again

  833. for time would fail

  834. to tell me

  835. to tell of Gideon Barak

  836. Samson Jephthah

  837. David and Samuel

  838. and the prophets

  839. who through faith

  840. conquered kingdoms

  841. enforced justice

  842. obtained promises

  843. stopped the mouths

  844. of lions

  845. quenched the power

  846. of fire

  847. escaped the edge

  848. of the sword

  849. and here's the thing

  850. that refers to Samson

  851. we're made strong

  852. out of weakness

  853. we're made strong

  854. out of weakness

  855. became mighty in war

  856. put foreign armies

  857. to flight

  858. just go back

  859. to the story

  860. in Judges chapter 16

    Judges 16 chapter mention

  861. remember I said

  862. four times in this story

  863. I will become weak

  864. like any other man

  865. he was a ladies man

  866. nobody would think

  867. he's a ladies man now

  868. two eyes

  869. gouged out

  870. they wouldn't have

  871. done it pretty

  872. by the way

  873. probably would have

  874. just been some

  875. big thing

  876. to make two

  877. gaping holes

  878. right there

  879. and his strength

  880. is gone

  881. he'd be dirty

  882. he'd be filthy

  883. it's an odd prayer

  884. and people puzzle

  885. over this thing

  886. about his two eyes

  887. the thing to do

  888. when read the story

  889. is that this isn't

  890. the arrogant

  891. Samson

  892. this is Samson

  893. filled with

  894. melancholy

  895. and regret

  896. you know

  897. for those of us

  898. who have had

  899. failures

  900. and disappointments

  901. in life

  902. and we have

  903. what I call

  904. the three o'clock

  905. and four o'clock

  906. in the morning

  907. moments

  908. when we can't

  909. sleep

  910. because it's as if

  911. some demonic

  912. being

  913. just keeps

  914. bringing our

  915. failures

  916. to our attention

  917. and that

  918. would have been

  919. Samson's life

  920. for this

  921. undisclosed

  922. length of time

  923. failure

  924. failure

  925. failure

  926. failure

  927. failure

  928. failure

  929. and now

  930. for the first time

  931. in the entire story

  932. if you look again

  933. at what he says

  934. he calls out

  935. to the Lord

  936. and says

  937. O

  938. Yahweh

  939. Adonai

  940. see we only have

  941. the word God

  942. in Canada

  943. but in the ancient

  944. world

  945. for the Jewish people

  946. there was a general

  947. name for God

  948. which was Elohim

  949. which he's going

  950. to say in a moment

  951. but they had a name

  952. which was only

  953. for Jewish people

  954. it's

  955. it's

  956. not just Elohim

  957. God in general

  958. God in the abstract

  959. it's Elohim

  960. it is

  961. my God

  962. it is

  963. as if

  964. when Jesus

  965. tells Christians

  966. that have become

  967. Christians

  968. to learn to pray

  969. to their father

  970. in heaven

  971. as dad

  972. it's daddy

  973. it's the personal

  974. intimate

  975. name

  976. and for the first

  977. time in the story

  978. he calls out

  979. in his weakness

  980. in his failure

  981. by the way

  982. the Bible never

  983. encourages deathbed

  984. conversions

  985. but this is a

  986. very very very

  987. powerful text

  988. for those

  989. who understand

  990. themselves

  991. to have been

  992. a failure

  993. no failure

  994. no person

  995. is so broken

  996. so failed

  997. such a wreck

  998. or a ruin

  999. that God

  1000. does not

  1001. love them

  1002. and so

  1003. Samson

  1004. wrecked

  1005. and ruined

  1006. and a failure

  1007. calls out

  1008. to the God

  1009. of the covenant

  1010. the forgotten

  1011. God

  1012. that he now

  1013. calls in a sense

  1014. as dad

  1015. you are

  1016. dad

  1017. of all

  1018. who put their

  1019. trust in you

  1020. you are the one

  1021. who desires

  1022. to be in covenant

  1023. with human beings

  1024. ordinary human beings

  1025. like me

  1026. and when we

  1027. enter into covenant

  1028. with a human being

  1029. like you

  1030. unworthy as we are

  1031. you invite us

  1032. to know you

  1033. not as God

  1034. in the abstract

  1035. or a mere force

  1036. or nature

  1037. but as dad

  1038. as God

  1039. that I know you

  1040. by name

  1041. and Adonai

  1042. means you are sovereign

  1043. I stand here

  1044. amidst

  1045. the mocking

  1046. cries

  1047. of 3,000

  1048. devotees

  1049. to an idol

  1050. who believe

  1051. that their

  1052. illusory

  1053. their idol

  1054. they believe

  1055. the illusion

  1056. and the delusion

  1057. that their idol

  1058. is actually real

  1059. and a God

  1060. and they are singing

  1061. his praises

  1062. and I am shackled

  1063. in their presence

  1064. and I have been

  1065. a failure

1066. but you are my father

1067. and you are in heaven

  1068. and despite

  1069. all appearances

  1070. you

  1071. are sovereign

  1072. you are

  1073. Adonai

  1074. and the word

  1075. remember

  1076. is a humble word

  1077. it's not

  1078. a word

  1079. of memory

  1080. techniques

  1081. learning how to

  1082. remember things

  1083. better

  1084. in the original

  1085. language

  1086. it's a humble

  1087. word

  1088. it's saying

  1089. have mercy upon me

1090. and worthy as I am

  1091. that you would note

  1092. me

  1093. I have nothing

  1094. that I can bring

  1095. all I have

  1096. is failure

  1097. and all I have

  1098. is weakness

  1099. and all I have

  1100. is frailty

  1101. and you are

  1102. sovereign

  1103. but you are not

  1104. just a distant

  1105. God

  1106. you are Yahweh

  1107. you are the

  1108. God who desires

  1109. to be in covenant

  1110. with me

  1111. and as he

  1112. stands

  1113. and calls out

  1114. in such a place

  1115. to such a God

  1116. he says

  1117. I ask for justice

  1118. out of humility

  1119. he only asked

  1120. for justice

  1121. in regards

  1122. to his two eyes

  1123. how does the story

  1124. continue

  1125. verse 29

  1126. and Samson

  1127. the word grasp

  1128. is a good word

1129. but it really just means

1130. he's put his hands on

  1131. the two middle pillars

  1132. on which the house

  1133. rested

  1134. and he leaned

  1135. his weight against them

  1136. his right hand

  1137. on the one

  1138. and his left hand

  1139. on the other

  1140. and by the way

  1141. he would have probably

  1142. felt as he's leaning

  1143. on them

  1144. he realizes

1145. gosh I have no strength

1146. to knock these things over

  1147. not there

  1148. not there

  1149. he's putting his hands

  1150. on them

  1151. as a reminder

  1152. that he is like

  1153. any other human being

  1154. he is mortal

  1155. he is weak

  1156. and he is frail

  1157. and he prays again

  1158. and Samson said

  1159. let me die

  1160. with the Philistines

  1161. asking

  1162. the source of strength

  1163. for strength

  1164. it's not an argument

  1165. for doctor

  1166. assisted suicide

  1167. it's a humble

  1168. acknowledgement

  1169. that he doesn't want

  1170. to have that

  1171. superhuman

  1172. arrogant

  1173. making

  1174. delusion

  1175. that comes from

  1176. arrogance

  1177. type of power

  1178. that means

  1179. that I can knock

  1180. these pillars

  1181. down

  1182. through your strength

  1183. but somehow

  1184. or another

  1185. I will not share

  1186. the fate of

  1187. all other human beings

  1188. who are mortal

  1189. I'm not asking

  1190. for some type

  1191. of vindication

  1192. of my person

  1193. that the rocks

  1194. will hit me

1195. but just bounce off me

1196. and I will be able

  1197. to walk

  1198. out of the rubble

  1199. strong

  1200. and triumphant

  1201. again

  1202. he is saying

  1203. Lord

  1204. you are the source

  1205. of my strength

  1206. give me this one

  1207. strength

  1208. one time

  1209. of strength

  1210. again

  1211. and let me

  1212. die

  1213. like any

  1214. mortal

  1215. frail

  1216. human being

  1217. in the midst

  1218. of the rubble

  1219. and it has nothing

1220. to do with his hair

  1221. verse 30

  1222. then he bowed

  1223. with all his strength

  1224. and the house

  1225. fell upon the lords

1226. and upon all the people

  1227. who were in it

  1228. so the dead

  1229. whom he killed

  1230. at his death

  1231. were more than those

  1232. whom he had killed

  1233. during his life

  1234. and his brothers

  1235. and all his family

  1236. came down

  1237. and took him

  1238. and brought him up

  1239. and buried him

  1240. between Zerah

  1241. and Eszital

  1242. in the tomb

  1243. of Manoah

  1244. his father

  1245. he had judged

  1246. Israel 20 years

  1247. I have to wrap

  1248. things up

  1249. just a couple

  1250. of things

  1251. you know

  1252. one of the

  1253. big problems

  1254. in modern

  1255. thought

  1256. is the problem

  1257. of evil

  1258. and

  1259. people

  1260. basically

  1261. saying

  1262. how can

  1263. a good God

  1264. and an all-powerful

  1265. God

  1266. let evil

  1267. happen to people

  1268. and

  1269. the Bible

  1270. has very

  1271. very powerful

  1272. resources

  1273. to talk

  1274. about that

  1275. but it's been

  1276. pointed out

  1277. by many people

  1278. that the Bible

  1279. doesn't actually

  1280. have an argument

  1281. against the problem

  1282. the problem

  1283. of evil

  1284. it has

  1285. profound

  1286. resources

  1287. about it

  1288. you can read

  1289. Job

  1290. and in particular

  1291. you look at

  1292. Jesus

  1293. and his life

  1294. and death

  1295. and his crucifixion

  1296. and his resurrection

  1297. and you realize

  1298. there's profound

  1299. resources to think

  1300. about it

  1301. in terms of

  1302. the problem

  1303. of evil

  1304. but if you

  1305. think about it

  1306. underneath

  1307. as part of

  1308. the problem

  1309. of evil

  1310. there's in fact

  1311. a different

  1312. type of an argument

  1313. which is this

  1314. that if God

  1315. really exists

  1316. if God

  1317. really is all-powerful

  1318. he's really good

  1319. then what he should

  1320. always do

  1321. is bless us

  1322. that's what he should

  1323. do

  1324. he should bless

  1325. us

  1326. he should bless

  1327. good people

  1328. but you see

  1329. the Bible

  1330. takes

  1331. is the only

  1332. book

  1333. that very wisely

  1334. deals with

  1335. a different

  1336. problem

  1337. and that is

  1338. the problem

  1339. of blessing

  1340. you see

  1341. if you think

  1342. about it

  1343. for a second

  1344. what's happened

  1345. to Samson

  1346. is he's been

  1347. blessed and blessed

  1348. and blessed

  1349. and blessed

  1350. but what's

  1351. happened to him

  1352. is his blessing

  1353. has led to

  1354. his arrogance

  1355. his blessing

  1356. has led him

  1357. to be contemptuous

  1358. an abuser

  1359. of women

  1360. and a murderer

  1361. his blessing

  1362. has led him

  1363. to the delusional

  1364. belief

  1365. that his world

  1366. can never

  1367. collapse

  1368. his blessing

  1369. has led him

  1370. to not help

  1371. other people

  1372. or be generous

  1373. but to only

  1374. feed

  1375. his own

  1376. ego

  1377. and his own

  1378. project

  1379. and we tend

  1380. not to think

  1381. about that

  1382. but you think

  1383. about it

  1384. for a second

  1385. and I'm not

  1386. casting down

  1387. rich people

  1388. but do we

  1389. really think

  1390. that the richest

  1391. people in the world

  1392. and the most

  1393. powerful people

  1394. in the world

  1395. are the nicest

  1396. people in the world

  1397. do we really

  1398. think they're

  1399. the kindest

  1400. the gentlest

  1401. the most generous

  1402. the most

  1403. self-effacing

  1404. the most

  1405. concerned

  1406. for the good

  1407. of others

  1408. don't we

  1409. in fact

  1410. constantly

  1411. recognize

  1412. that people

  1413. with profound

  1414. gifts

  1415. have problems

  1416. of deep

  1417. arrogance

  1418. and self-centeredness

  1419. and a sense

  1420. of entitlement

  1421. isn't that

  1422. in fact

  1423. a profoundly

  1424. Canadian

  1425. problem

  1426. problem

  1427. I'm going to

  1428. make a slight

  1429. political statement

  1430. how is it

  1431. that people

  1432. think that we

  1433. can shut down

  1434. all mining

  1435. and they'll

  1436. still have

  1437. iPhones

  1438. it's the

  1439. definition

  1440. of delusion

  1441. how is it

  1442. we think

  1443. that we can

  1444. shut down

  1445. shut all gas

  1446. and still

  1447. drive cars

  1448. that is the

  1449. definition

  1450. of delusion

  1451. connected

  1452. to arrogant

  1453. entitlement

  1454. and isn't

  1455. it in fact

  1456. a regular

  1457. thing

  1458. for us

  1459. to look

  1460. in the

  1461. paper

  1462. and see

  1463. that some

  1464. beautiful

  1465. movie star

  1466. or musician

  1467. who's profoundly

  1468. rich

  1469. and profoundly

  1470. talented

  1471. and profoundly

  1472. praised

  1473. has committed

  1474. suicide

  1475. out of a

  1476. deep

  1477. inner

  1478. despair

  1479. or that you

  1480. have radio

  1481. contests

  1482. occasionally

  1483. because we

  1484. ten years

  1485. ago the

  1486. person who's

  1487. talked about

  1488. everywhere and

  1489. praised and

  1490. now we don't

  1491. even know if

  1492. they're still

  1493. alive

  1494. and only the

  1495. bible talks

  1496. about the

  1497. fact we

  1498. think that

  1499. if god only

  1500. blessed us

  1501. that would

  1502. show that

  1503. god exists

  1504. but there is

  1505. a far more

  1506. deep human

  1507. problem of

  1508. blessing

  1509. turning into

  1510. arrogance

  1511. and believing

  1512. that your

  1513. world will

  1514. never collapse

  1515. so just a

  1516. couple of

  1517. thoughts to

  1518. run through

  1519. very quickly

  1520. being blessed

  1521. with great

  1522. power

  1523. can make

  1524. you arrogant

  1525. foolish

  1526. and contemptuous

  1527. of the

  1528. triune god

  1529. who is the

  1530. source of

  1531. blessing

  1532. being blessed

  1533. with great

  1534. power can

  1535. in fact make

  1536. you arrogant

  1537. foolish and

  1538. contemptuous

  1539. of the

  1540. triune god

  1541. who is the

  1542. source of

  1543. blessing

  1544. and by

  1545. the way

  1546. one of the

  1547. characteristics of

  1548. arrogant people

  1549. is they don't

  1550. think they're

  1551. arrogant

  1552. and one of the

  1553. characteristics of

  1554. proud people

  1555. is they don't

  1556. think they're

  1557. proud

  1558. and one of the

  1559. characteristics of

  1560. entitled people

  1561. is they don't

  1562. think they're

  1563. entitled

1564. they notice we notice arrogance and pride and entitlement in others

1565. and are blind to it in our own lives

1566. you see you and i easily believe that we are too powerful that you are too powerful

  1567. to collapse

1568. one of the things that this bible is the bible text is pointing to is this

1569. the bible wants to make us aware of the problem of mere blessing feeding our arrogance

1570. the bible time and time and time and time again reminds us that we human beings are frail

  1571. and we are mortal

1572. and that death comes to all

1573. but it does not tell us these stories to depress us

1574. but to wake us up

1575. that we might connect with the true and living god

1576. and so it is that we see that this jesus is the true and greater samson

1577. that in chapter 14 verse 4 when it says that god was going to use samson to begin to deliver the

1578. people of israel we see that he does begin to deliver the people of israel by the end of samson's

1579. life as i talked about last week israel is once again understanding itself as distinct from the philistines

1580. he's removed the philistine leadership and he's preparing the day for the one who will defeat philistines which is david

1581. but then when you go and you look at the story of david you realize david has the power to defeat the philistines

1582. but he cannot defeat his own sin and his own death and david himself points down the lines of history

1583. to the day when he will say oh lord my lord when he acknowledges that through his line god will send one

1584. who will look at our mortality and our frailty and our foolishness

1585. but just as yahweh entered into the old testament people

1586. out of love to desire to be in a relationship with us

1587. that yahweh that god himself will send his very son to take into himself

1588. the frailty of our human nature and as a fully human being only with and tempted in all ways as we are only without sin

1589. that he would die upon a cross bearing all that separates us from god

1590. that he would not come amongst us frail but never die that he would come amongst us to die

1591. as the lamb of god who takes away the sin of the world

1592. despised and rejected and that he would be the one who would defeat what david could not defeat

1593. that he would be the one to defeat our sin and our arrogance

1594. and our inability to save ourselves and death itself

1595. and that jesus comes as god with us to be amongst us

1596. and with us as a community and as individuals in the midst of our weakness and our frailty

1597. and the power of the gospel is to remind us day by day that i george am weak and frail

1598. but i have a savior who has defeated sin

1599. and a savior who has defeated death

1600. a savior who did this because he loves me

1601. and as a result of my putting my faith and trust in jesus

  1602. i live in my father's world

1603. i have a father who loves me

1604. and who cares for me

1605. and a savior who will walk with me through the valley of the shadow of death

1606. and even into death and beyond

1607. to be in life with the father

1608. and it is the father's world

1609. and the gospel is there to both constantly humble me

  1610. as it grips me

  1611. and constantly reassure me

1612. that my life does not depend upon me being strong and powerful enough

1613. so that my world will never collapse

1614. but that the final word about me is

1615. welcome into my kingdom my beloved son

1616. whom i've loved you and saved you out of my love

1617. not weighing your merits but pardoning your offenses

1618. and i will i have never left you

1619. i have never abandoned you

1620. i have never forsaken you

  1621. i never will

  1622. welcome

1623. the lord takes no delight in the death of a sinner

1624. he delights when you turn and call on him

1625. to redeem you as his own

1626. and in the real world

1627. the triune god is present powerful active sovereign

1628. and never needs a contingency plan

1629. and that's how the gospel invites us to live

  1630. in a world

1631. that has a lot of fear

  1632. to live

1633. knowing that the triune god

1634. he never has a contingency plan

1635. nothing catches him by surprise

  1636. he's always working on plan a

  1637. and that little

  1638. weak

  1639. frail

  1640. mortal

  1641. me

  1642. and little

  1643. weak

  1644. mortal

  1645. frail

  1646. you

1647. when you reach your hand out

  1648. to such a god

1649. in the name of jesus

1650. and you cannot possibly reach him

  1651. he can reach you

1652. and he will take your hand

1653. and he will never let you go

1654. he will hold your hand

  1655. through all your trials

  1656. and all your temptations

  1657. and all your success

  1658. and all your failure

  1659. and he

  1660. will never

  1661. let you go

1662. to the moment of your death

  1663. and beyond

  1664. his hand

  1665. is life

  1666. and it is offered

  1667. to you

  1668. invite you to stand

1669. let's bow our heads in prayer

  1670. father

1671. thank you for your word

  1672. thank you that you

  1673. confront us

  1674. like samson

  1675. with our mortality

  1676. our weakness

  1677. our frailty

  1678. that you confront us

  1679. of our arrogance

  1680. and of our delusion

  1681. not to humiliate us

  1682. not to shame us

  1683. not

  1684. to make us

  1685. live as defeated

  1686. human beings

  1687. but to help us

  1688. to wake up

  1689. to who we are

  1690. and who you are

  1691. that you are real

  1692. that you are true

  1693. that you are mighty

  1694. that you are strong

  1695. that you are just

  1696. that you are good

1697. that you are the source

  1698. of blessing

1699. and that you bless us

  1700. by redeeming us

  1701. despite ourselves

  1702. and making us

  1703. your children

  1704. when any person

  1705. calls out to you

  1706. like samson

1707. that you will be their god

1708. that jesus will be their savior

1709. and you never turn anyone away

1710. and we thank you father

  1711. for this

  1712. and we ask

1713. if there's any who are here

1714. any listening to this online

  1715. or listening to it

  1716. later on audio

  1717. that

  1718. the holy spirit father

1719. that they will give in

  1720. to the holy spirit

  1721. and allow you

  1722. to grab them

  1723. and take their hand

1724. so that they will know

  1725. jesus as their savior

1726. and you as their father

  1727. in heaven

  1728. and we ask father

1729. that you do a mighty work

  1730. in us

  1731. that we live

  1732. not out of fear

  1733. but out of faith

1734. that you are the sovereign god

  1735. you hold our hands

1736. and will never let us go

  1737. day by day

1738. and all god's people said

  1739. amen
