  1. The scripture reading comes from Philippians chapter 4 verse 1 to 9.

    Philippians 4:1–9

  2. Please follow along on the screen or on your Bible.

  3. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

  4. I entreat you, O dear, and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord.

  5. Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

  6. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  7. Again, I will say, rejoice.

  8. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.

  9. The Lord is at hand.

  10. Do not be anxious about anything.

  11. But in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

  12. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  13. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable.

  14. If there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

  15. What you have learned and received and heard and sent in me, practice these things.

  16. And the God of peace will be with you.

  17. Amen.

  18. Thank you so much, Iris.

  19. It's great to see all of you virtually.

  20. At the moment, we would love to be back together physically.

  21. But as you're online and in your home, wherever you are, I'd love you just to pray right now for God's word to really engage in our hearts.

  22. So let's bow your heads and pray.

  23. Father, just thank you that you are an incredible God.

  24. That you're the God of all the universe.

  25. And yet you're the God who wants to be with us and to bring us peace.

  26. I pray, Lord, right now, Lord, many of us are in totally different circumstances.

  27. Some of us feel very stressed.

  28. Some of us feel worried.

  29. Some of us feel all over the place.

  30. But, Lord, we pray right now you'd center our hearts on you.

  31. That your word would get into the depths of our souls and would bring joy this morning.

  32. Joy in you.

  33. So I pray, Lord, take your word.

  34. Take away my words and let you speak through what we say this morning.

  35. For the name and the glory of Jesus.

  36. Amen.

  37. Great.

  38. If you don't know me, my name is Chris.

  39. I'm one of the leaders here today.

  40. And we've been looking at this series in Philippians over the last few weeks.

  41. Now, for me, I've been in Hong Kong for nine years.

  42. And Hong Kong is one of the most incredible cities in the world.

  43. It is beautiful in scenery.

  44. It's modern.

  45. It's efficient.

  46. It's an extraordinary city.

  47. But if there's any word that I would say doesn't describe Hong Kong, it would be the word peace.

  48. And maybe also the word joy.

  49. Because, you see, in Hong Kong, we're a hurried, anxious, stressed people.

  50. And there's also so much division and conflict that has been taking place particularly over the last year or so.

  51. And so this passage is, we're going to look at with Paul writing to a pressured, anxious people.

  52. And he's going to take them through in the first two to three verses.

  53. He's going to look at dealing with some relational, bringing relational peace to people.

  54. And then he makes a promise.

  55. In verse 7, he says, the peace of God will be with you.

  56. And then he says in verse 9, the God of peace will be with you.

  57. This passage is a promise of peace.

  58. Not just to the Philippians, but to us, right where we are, right today, whatever circumstances you're in.

  59. God wants us, as his people, to be a people who love and walk in peace, no matter what our circumstances are.

  60. So, the question we're going to look at is, how do we get to be a people of peace this morning?

  61. Well, maybe let's just first start thinking about what actually is peace in the Bible.

  62. Well, let me tell you what it isn't.

  63. It isn't just being chilled out and having a laid-back personality.

  64. Because often people who are very laid-back can struggle to really care about the real realities of life.

  65. They just want to chill.

  66. Whereas, it's also not just going on a staycation without your kids.

  67. Because when you come back from staycation, the stress just comes again.

  68. You see, biblical peace is actually upward, inward, and outward.

  69. In the upward, the gospel promise here, you notice it says,

  70. the peace of God will be with you.

  71. But it's only experienced when you have the God of peace who is with you.

  72. In other words, Romans 5 says this,

  73. therefore, since we've been justified by faith, we have peace with God.

  74. This first peace is a God peace because of Jesus' death on the cross.

  75. We are no longer his enemies, but we're reconciled in relationship with him.

  76. We're his.

  77. And that peace with God then leads to the inward peace.

  78. A calm, confident trust in God where in your soul,

  79. it doesn't matter if the storms of life are going crazy,

  80. you know that God has got you.

  81. You know that you're his.

  82. You know he'll provide.

  83. You know that he is the one who anchors and holds you.

  84. And he says it surpasses understanding this peace

  85. because it's not what goes on in your brain

  86. that you're planning to try and fix your circumstances that's going to get it.

  87. It's a peace which has gone from here and it's gone down deep into here.

  88. You see, you need upward peace to get inward peace,

  89. but then that leads to outward peace.

  90. You see, that's relational peace with others.

  91. You don't have to prove yourself or fight to win in the argument

  92. because the peace of God leads us,

  93. and our reconciliation with God leads us to seek to reconcile with others

  94. and to lay down our rights and our interests.

  95. You see, Paul says here that the peace of God,

  96. upward, inward, outward,

  97. will guard your hearts

  98. and minds

  99. and minds

  100. in Christ.

  101. That word guard,

  102. it's the word which means to act like a security guard.

  103. You know,

  104. I don't know if you remember,

  105. back in 9-11,

  106. just after 9-11,

  107. I went to Los Angeles airport.

  108. And the security there

  109. was just insane.

  110. It was,

  111. you could hardly move one meter

  112. without someone asking for your ID,

  113. trying to get past it.

  114. It was just almost impossible to get through.

  115. And Paul is saying,

  116. in your heart

  117. and in your heart

  118. and in your mind,

  119. the peace

  120. of God

  121. is meant to be like security guards

  122. guarding your heart

  123. to keep it trusting in Christ.

  124. You see,

  125. you hear you're getting fired

  126. and worry comes along saying,

  127. oh,

  128. what about the future?

  129. And the peace of God says,

  130. let me see your ID,

  131. worry.

  132. You see all your friends

  133. are getting married

  134. and you're still single

  135. and fear of missing out

  136. comes to you

  137. and says,

  138. you should worry now.

  139. But the peace of God says,

  140. no entry,

  141. FOMO.

  142. You've been hurt.

  143. Resentment and bitterness

  144. are eating away at heart.

  145. They're trying to get into your heart

  146. and the peace of God says,

  147. access denied.

  148. That's what peace is.

  149. Peace is like a ballast.

  150. A ballast is what?

  151. It's the heavy weight

  152. you put in a boat

  153. which no matter whether

  154. the waves are pounding away,

  155. it keeps that boat

  156. rock solid and steady.

  157. It's not going to capsize.

  158. That's what the peace of God

  159. wants to do

  160. in us as a community.

  161. Do you want that kind of peace

  162. in your heart

  163. and in your relationships?

  164. Well,

  165. Paul is going to show us

  166. how do we get to take hold

  167. of that peace.

  168. So if we remember

  169. over the last three chapters

  170. in the book of Philippians,

  171. Paul has been writing

  172. to anxious,

  173. in anxious,

  174. troubling times.

  175. Paul's in prison

  176. because of the gospel

  177. and he's awaiting trial

  178. and possible execution.

  179. The Philippian church

  180. have been under pressure

  181. from outside

  182. and there are relational

  183. tensions inside the church.

  184. Paul has told the Philippians,

  185. guys,

  186. we're on the same team.

  187. We're united

  188. with our minds

  189. set on Christ,

  190. putting him

  191. and others' interests

  192. before our own.

  193. We're going to follow

  194. and imitate the J-curve

  195. where the way down

  196. is the way to life.

  197. The way of dying to self

  198. is the way to resurrection power.

  199. We put our hope

  200. and our minds

  201. on knowing Christ,

  202. heading towards that goal.

  203. It's been inspirational stuff.

  204. It's been a great sermon

  205. Paul has been preaching

  206. and you'd have thought

  207. that would be enough

  208. for the Philippians to go,

  209. great, we've got peace now.

  210. But Paul says,

  211. no, gospel preaching,

  212. even reading scripture

  213. or spiritual disciplines,

  214. though they are vital

  215. in the Christian life,

  216. Paul says,

  217. first of all,

  218. that if we're to be

  219. a people marinated

  220. in peace,

  221. we've got to take hold

  222. of the first path of peace

  223. which is,

  224. we need to walk

  225. that path together.

  226. This is verse 2 and 3.

  227. For Ahir,

  228. he gets specific

  229. and he names

  230. Euodia and Syntyche,

  231. two women

  232. who aren't getting on

  233. with each other.

  234. And we don't know

  235. exactly why,

  236. but it seems to be

  237. not a major sin issue

  238. because he doesn't

  239. rebuke them,

  240. but it seems to be

  241. a preference issue.

  242. Like,

  243. I like hymns,

  244. she likes rock music,

  245. we don't get on.

  246. But why does he name

  247. Euodia and Syntyche?

  248. And entreat them,

  249. urge them.

  250. You see,

  251. what he's saying is,

  252. this kind of conflict

  253. in the church

  254. is an issue.

  255. He's saying,

  256. don't let conflict

  257. just fester

  258. like an open wound.

  259. It says,

  260. it may not feel like

  261. it's a massive deal

  262. for these two women

  263. not to be talking

  264. to each other,

  265. but there is a lack

  266. of peace here.

  267. And so he says,

  268. agree in the Lord,

  269. which doesn't mean

  270. have all the same opinions,

  271. but it means

  272. live in a harmony

  273. in Christ.

  274. Make Jesus

  275. and his honour

  276. and the gospel

  277. and your mission together

  278. more important

  279. than being right

  280. or getting your own way.

  281. Because you're on

  282. the same team

  283. and your fighting

  284. is like trying to

  285. punch yourself

  286. in the face.

  287. It harms you

  288. and it harms the gospel.

  289. But then he says,

  290. okay,

  291. let's deal with this.

  292. But then he says,

  293. true companion,

  294. help these women.

  295. And we don't know

  296. exactly who

  297. this true companion is.

  298. Some people think

  299. it's Luke.

  300. But what he's saying

  301. is,

  302. you're not just

  303. going to do this

  304. by yourselves.

  305. You know,

  306. I can tell you

  307. we need community

  308. to help us

  309. in our relationships

  310. and to have peace

  311. internally as well.

  312. I can't tell you

  313. how many marriages,

  314. how many family relationships,

  315. how many CGs and churches

  316. are divided

  317. and have issues

  318. and flounder

  319. because we've either

  320. brushed conflict

  321. under the carpet

  322. and tried to avoid

  323. talking about it

  324. or because we're

  325. so independent

  326. and private

  327. and fearful

  328. of what others

  329. will think about us

  330. that we haven't

  331. invited anybody in

  332. to help us

  333. on the journey

  334. to peace together.

  335. You see,

  336. privacy

  337. kills peace

  338. because it leaves you

  339. wrestling with your issues

  340. in isolation

  341. without other

  342. mature believers

  343. that God has placed there

  344. to help you walk

  345. on that path

  346. towards peace.

  347. So let me encourage you.

  348. I don't know where

  349. you're up to

  350. but if you are going through

  351. any either relational issues

  352. or just anxiousness

  353. in your own soul

  354. right now,

  355. don't walk it alone.

  356. Talk to a member

  357. of your CG.

  358. Come and talk to a member

  359. of staff or an elder.

  360. We want to walk it together

  361. because the way of peace

  362. is a communal journey.

  363. That's the first thing.

  364. The first path to peace

  365. is walk together.

  366. Second path to peace

  367. is this in verse 4.

  368. He says,

  369. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  370. Again, I'll say it.

  371. Rejoice.

  372. Did you get what he said there?

  373. He said,

  374. In the midst of all the challenges,

  375. everything you're facing right now,

  376. rejoice in the Lord always.

  377. In Greek,

  378. the word always

  379. means always.

  380. And you just received

  381. a harsh text from your boss.

  382. Rejoice.

  383. Your spouse just left

  384. the towel on the floor

  385. for the thousandth time.

  386. Rejoice.

  387. Your economy is collapsing.

  388. Your work is on the line.

  389. You're fearful about

  390. the future of politics.

  391. Rejoice.

  392. And inside,

  393. aren't we going,

  394. Paul,

  395. what planet are you on?

  396. Could you just get

  397. a little bit of a reality check here?

  398. And Paul anticipates

  399. our kind of natural objection

  400. in our heart

  401. and he goes,

  402. No, no, no.

  403. Did you hear what I said?

  404. No, let me say it again to you

  405. if you're wondering.

  406. Rejoice.

  407. Rejoice.

  408. You see,

  409. this is not a suggestion.

  410. This is a command.

  411. And with commands,

  412. you're not meant to go,

  413. Oh, that sounds

  414. a little bit difficult.

  415. Maybe I'll just give

  416. that one a miss.

  417. No, commands,

  418. you're meant to obey them.

  419. Commands are not optional.

  420. And so Jesus,

  421. what he's saying is,

  422. Jesus calls every Christian

  423. to a life of joy.

  424. It's one of the chief markers

  425. of the Christian life.

  426. It's the pathway to peace.

  427. Romans 14 says,

  428. Paul goes,

  429. The kingdom of God

  430. is not about external things

  431. like eating and drinking.

  432. It's a matter of peace

  433. and joy

  434. in the Holy Spirit.

  435. This is what it's about.

  436. You see,

  437. what is joy really,

  438. what is he talking about here?

  439. Well,

  440. what he's not talking about

  441. is going around

  442. with a fake smile

  443. on your face,

  444. pretending that everything's fine

  445. when everything else

  446. is collapsing around you.

  447. You know,

  448. we should feel sorrow

  449. when we lose a loved one

  450. or when there is pain

  451. and difficulty

  452. in circumstances.

  453. We should feel grief

  454. when Liverpool lose

  455. in the Champions League.

  456. That is right

  457. and appropriate.

  458. But,

  459. some people are thinking

  460. that's joy,

  461. but we need to correct that.

  462. But so often,

  463. you know,

  464. and I've experienced this,

  465. many Christians,

  466. when you're feeling down,

  467. when you're feeling miserable,

  468. I've had so many come to me

  469. and say,

  470. I don't really want to go to church

  471. and engage with community

  472. because I think

  473. I'm just going to be a hypocrite

  474. singing songs

  475. and those kind of things.

  476. Because we're supposed

  477. to be happy,

  478. right,

  479. as Christians.

  480. But the thing is,

  481. we've got the total wrong idea

  482. of what joy is meant

  483. to be about here.

  484. In 2 Corinthians,

  485. Paul can say,

  486. I'm sorrowful,

  487. but I'm always rejoicing.

  488. You see,

  489. you can have sorrow and joy

  490. at the same time.

  491. Christians should be

  492. the most real people

  493. in the world,

  494. not denying our feelings.

  495. But what is joy?

  496. If that's what it's not,

  497. what is it?

  498. Well,

  499. the most simple thing

  500. we can say is,

  501. joy is a feeling

  502. or a state of happiness.

  503. In scripture,

  504. you can feel joy

  505. because of a good meal,

  506. seeing friends again

  507. like Epaphroditus.

  508. You can even feel joy,

  509. rejoice,

  510. getting your own way.

  511. The Pharisees rejoiced

  512. when Judas betrayed Jesus.

  513. So you don't even need

  514. to be a Christian

  515. to rejoice.

  516. But there is something unique

  517. about Christian,

  518. biblical joy,

  519. joy,

  520. which is it's not determined

  521. by your circumstances.

  522. You know,

  523. you can rejoice

  524. when you're in prison

  525. like Paul

  526. or when you've just been beaten

  527. like the apostles

  528. in Acts 5.

  529. It's a Christian joy.

  530. It's not primarily

  531. joy in circumstances,

  532. it's joy in Jesus.

  533. And so that means

  534. there's two things

  535. that joy is,

  536. and rejoicing.

  537. Joy is both a gift

  538. and a fight.

  539. It is both

  540. a fruit of the spirit

  541. and a choice

  542. of focus.

  543. So let me think

  544. of the first one.

  545. Why is it a gift?

  546. Have you ever

  547. tried

  548. to command

  549. a feeling?

  550. Okay,

  551. you've just heard

  552. you failed an exam.

  553. Now be happy!

  554. Okay?

  555. It doesn't work right.

  556. You can't just

  557. switch on

  558. and off

  559. your emotions.

  560. That's why

  561. this kind of rejoicing

  562. is a fruit

  563. of the spirit

  564. because

  565. it is the Holy Spirit

  566. opening your eyes

  567. to see

  568. the beauty of Jesus

  569. right where you are.

  570. You see,

  571. I've just talked

  572. to a couple people

  573. even in this past week

  574. who are going through

  575. really difficult

  576. work circumstances.

  577. And both of them

  578. have said to me,

  579. you know,

  580. everyone around me

  581. I talk to

  582. thinks I should be

  583. really worried

  584. and really stressed

  585. because this is

  586. just a tough situation

  587. but I feel like

  588. this sense of

  589. just real peace

  590. and real joy

  591. at the moment

  592. in God

  593. because I just see

  594. God is good

  595. at the moment

  596. and he's going to

  597. provide for me

  598. and everyone's

  599. looking at me

  600. like how can you

  601. do that?

  602. And the reason

  603. they can do that

  604. is because it's

  605. a work of the spirit

  606. in their lives.

  607. It's a gift

  608. from God.

  609. But the

  610. Paul actually

  611. he says,

  612. you know,

  613. I want to know

  614. the resurrection

  615. power of Jesus

  616. and resurrection

  617. power is the

  618. power to rejoice

  619. no matter what's

  620. going on in your

  621. life

  622. because of Jesus.

  623. That's why we need

  624. to pray for joy

  625. in Jesus.

  626. I don't know

  627. when the last time

  628. you actually prayed

  629. that you would

  630. actually learn

  631. how to rejoice

  632. in Jesus

  633. in your circumstances.

  634. I'm just challenged

  635. by that.

  636. But we desperately

  637. need the spirit's work.

  638. Doesn't our

  639. automatic response

  640. to that command

  641. of thinking

  642. that's just

  643. not realistic.

  644. Show that we're

  645. so self-reliant

  646. in our lives

  647. that we think

  648. it all depends

  649. on us.

  650. No,

  651. we've got to get

  652. desperate for our

  653. eyes to be focused

  654. on him

  655. and to have the spirit

  656. bring us joy

  657. in our hearts.

  658. But it's a gift

  659. but it's not just

  660. a gift.

  661. It's also a fight

  662. for focus.

  663. You see,

  664. he says rejoice

  665. in the Lord.

  666. Not rejoice

  667. because your

  668. circumstances suck.

  669. He says rejoice

  670. in the Lord

  671. because Paul

  672. has just got

  673. this active focus

  674. on Jesus

  675. all the time.

  676. We've seen it

  677. all before.

  678. Chapter 1,

  679. he says for me

  680. to live is Christ

  681. and me to die

  682. is gain.

  683. Chapter 3,

  684. I've counted

  685. everything a loss

  686. compared to the

  687. surpassing worth

  688. of knowing Jesus,

  689. my Lord.

  690. In his struggles,

  691. what he's doing,

  692. he's actually

  693. not looking down,

  694. and he's looking

  695. up and he's

  696. seeing Jesus

  697. and he's saying,

  698. I can see him

  699. and his grace

  700. in the midst

  701. of this.

  702. You see where

  703. his focus is?

  704. He's fighting

  705. to fix his eyes

  706. on Jesus.

  707. You know,

  708. part of the fight

  709. of joy is when

  710. you are feeling

  711. miserable,

  712. when you are

  713. feeling stressed

  714. and down,

  715. it's not backing

  716. out of community

  717. because you feel

  718. like a hypocrite.

  719. It's actually moving

  720. into God's people.

  721. It's getting

  722. into God's word.

  723. It's fixing,

  724. it's choosing

  725. to fix our

  726. thoughts on

  727. Jesus and say,

  728. I'm going to

  729. trust him even

  730. though I don't

  731. feel like it.

  732. It's a fight.

  733. It's putting on

  734. Jesus-centered

  735. worship music

  736. when you just feel

  737. like you've got

  738. no energy left

  739. to fight,

  740. just to help

  741. lift your eyes

  742. up to him.

  743. It's pouring out

  744. your emotions

  745. to God

  746. and trusting him

  747. and lifting him

  748. with an expectancy

  749. that the spirit

  750. will restore

  751. joy and peace

  752. into your heart

  753. in his timing.

  754. And you're going

  755. to come back

  756. again and again

  757. and that's the fight.

  758. That's the fight

  759. for joy.

  760. Some Christians

  761. think joy

  762. should just be

  763. this kind of

  764. automatic thing.

  765. They think it's

  766. just gift

  767. but no fight.

  768. But God says,

  769. no,

  770. it needs both

  771. of those things

  772. together.

  773. So what do we

  774. fight with?

  775. How do we fight?

  776. What are we

  777. rejoicing?

  778. Well,

  779. here's what we

  780. need to do.

  781. We need to get

  782. out our gospel

  783. shotgun.

  784. And we need

  785. to fire the

  786. promises of God

  787. in our circumstances.

  788. Here's what we

  789. rejoice in.

  790. First,

  791. we rejoice in

  792. grace.

  793. Philippians 3,

  794. 20 says,

  795. our citizenship

  796. is in heaven.

  797. So we rejoice

  798. in whose we are.

  799. You know,

  800. our citizenship

  801. is in heaven.

  802. You could have

  803. just been treated

  804. really unfairly

  805. at work

  806. and you're feeling

  807. miserable,

  808. angry,

  809. frustrated.

  810. Peace is gone.

  811. But when you

  812. remember,

  813. Jesus died for me

  814. when I never

  815. deserved it.

  816. He's treated me

  817. so much better

  818. than I deserve.

  819. In Christ,

  820. they can mistreat me

  821. but I have a

  822. savior who loves me,

  823. who holds me.

  824. I'm safe,

  825. I'm held,

  826. I'm secure.

  827. No one can ever

  828. take away what I

  829. have in Jesus.

  830. We can rejoice.

  831. We rejoice in grace.

  832. We rejoice in power.

  833. You wake up

  834. and you feel like

  835. you've got just

  836. to face a whole

  837. load of people

  838. or situations

  839. you just don't

  840. know how to face

  841. or you just

  842. don't want to.

  843. Anyone ever like that?

  844. Pull that gospel

  845. trigger which says,

  846. I can do all things

  847. through Christ

  848. who gives me strength.

  849. His resurrection power

  850. is at work in me

  851. right now.

  852. He's the Lord

  853. and he has this situation

  854. in his hands.

  855. He's changing me

  856. by his spirit

  857. so I can be more

  858. than a conqueror

  859. today through him.

  860. Jesus,

  861. let's go together

  862. and face this.

  863. I rejoice in power.

  864. I rejoice in grace.

  865. We rejoice in hope.

  866. You failed again.

  867. You feel the shame

  868. and stress

  869. of just constantly

  870. messing up

  871. or you're waiting.

  872. You're seeing

  873. other people's mess ups

  874. and you're waiting.

  875. You're longing

  876. for them to change.

  877. 32021 says,

  878. we await a savior,

  879. Jesus.

  880. Who will transform

  881. our lowly body

  882. into his,

  883. to be like his glorious body.

  884. You say,

  885. shame,

  886. I'm not going to live

  887. under you any longer.

  888. I have a savior

  889. who is bigger,

  890. who is more glorious,

  891. who loves me.

  892. His love is deeper.

  893. His power is greater

  894. than any failure.

  895. And he can work right now

  896. in my life

  897. and in the life

  898. of the people around me

  899. because he's going

  900. to take today,

  901. he's going to transform it

  902. for his glory

  903. because he is near,

  904. he's coming back again

  905. and he's going to do

  906. a restoration work

  907. and he's going to work

  908. even right now

  909. for his,

  910. for redemptive glory.

  911. We can rejoice

  912. in grace,

  913. in power,

  914. in hope.

  915. this ain't all there is.

  916. Our savior is returning.

  917. The Lord is near.

  918. And as we learn

  919. how to fight in that

  920. and pray for the spirit

  921. to work in our life,

  922. Jesus becomes

  923. more precious to us.

  924. The word of God,

  925. the spirit takes his word

  926. and just warms your heart.

  927. some of us

  928. don't experience

  929. that joy

  930. or that peace

  931. that joy

  932. is like a

  933. playmate with

  934. because our focus

  935. is so cluttered

  936. on so many other things.

  937. Our minds

  938. are so focused

  939. on our own plans

  940. that we often

  941. count following Christ

  942. as loss

  943. compared

  944. to the surpassing

  945. worth of everything

  946. else we want

  947. in our lives.

  948. but the path

  949. to the fortress

  950. of peace

  951. goes by the gateway

  952. of walking together

  953. and of rejoicing

  954. in Christ together.

  955. I want to just stop here

  956. and pause.

  957. We're going to come on

  958. to the last couple of points

  959. in a minute

  960. but I want you to stop

  961. and either with the person

  962. next to you

  963. or if you're on your own

  964. I've got a couple of questions

  965. that I want you just to reflect on

  966. to talk about together.

  967. What gives you

  968. the greatest joy?

  969. Does that lead

  970. to peace in God?

  971. How are you fighting

  972. for joy

  973. and peace

  974. in Jesus

  975. right now

  976. in your present circumstances?

  977. So take a couple of minutes

  978. and then we'll come back

  979. and we'll carry on

  980. with the next part.

  981. we'll see you once again.

  982. Amen.

  983. Amen.

  984. Amen.

  985. Amen.

  986. Amen.

  987. Amen.

  988. Amen.

  989. Amen.

  990. Okay.

  991. So we've looked at the pathway to peace, that fortress, which means we don't walk alone.

  992. We do it together.

  993. We rejoice always in all circumstances.

  994. But then thirdly, the passage says, pray thankfully.

  995. Here's what it says in verse six.

  996. Don't be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving,

  997. let your requests be known to God.

  998. You see, the Philippians have got good reason to be anxious.

  999. Paul is in prison and potentially about to die, and they may even be next.

  1000. They don't know.

1001. Paul's not saying at this point, just be zen.

1002. You know, don't be concerned about anything.

1003. You see, if my 11-month-old son went missing for 24 hours and I was not concerned, that would be a lack of love.

1004. The reason we get anxious and we worry is because we love things, because we care about things which seem to be under threat or out of our control.

1005. Whether it's our health, whether it's our kids, whether it's our love life, whether it's our job, whatever it is in our relationships.

1006. But Paul is saying when anxiety knocks on the door, if you want the security guards of God's peace-filled presence to be with you,

1007. stop clinging with clenched fists to what you care about most.

1008. Just like my son with his favorite toy.

1009. Surrender them open-handedly to the feet of Jesus to entrust them to him in prayer and supplication.

1010. And what he's saying is in prayer, and he's talking general prayer, that regular routine of opening your life up to relate to God,

1011. for him to come into all of your life.

  1012. That's time with God.

1013. If you don't spend time with God regularly in scripture, in seeking his face, to enjoy him,

1014. don't be surprised if you discover a restlessness in your own soul,

1015. because you've already fired the security guards of God's peace.

1016. Worry and relational tension can just walk right in if you're not doing that regularly.

1017. But then he doesn't just say general prayer, he also says supplication and request.

1018. That's specific requests for help.

1019. And he says, in everything.

1020. That means not just spiritual stuff.

  1021. It's in everything.

1022. Big stuff, little stuff, the things you think God might not even be concerned about.

1023. You know, I remember it was late.

1024. I was walking back late night from Kowloon somewhere.

1025. And I was walking back and I was feeling tired.

  1026. I was feeling miserable.

  1027. I was feeling hungry.

1028. But it was late night, so I didn't want to eat very much.

  1029. I wanted just a snack.

1030. But if you know me, I have some food intolerances and snacks I can never find anywhere that I can eat.

1031. And that all just made me feel like, oh, a little pity party of how unfair life was at that moment.

1032. But then I stopped to say to myself,

1033. God, and I prayed, God, I know that you promised to provide for me.

1034. And God, I just give you this stupid little moment to you.

1035. And I walked around the corner and there was a sushi shop.

1036. And sushi is one of the few snacks that I can eat.

1037. And I wasn't in an area where I thought there was any sushi around.

  1038. It was so late.

1039. I thought everything was shut.

1040. And I rejoiced in the Lord at that moment.

1041. But that sushi shop was actually always there.

1042. It wasn't a miraculous event in one sense.

1043. But I saw God in the ordinary everydayness, his gracious hand, because I had entrusted my care to him.

1044. And I saw, like, if I hadn't prayed, I would have just felt entitled.

1045. And I would have just not even stopped for a second thought at that moment.

1046. But instead, thankfulness filled my heart, because I saw grace, evidence, in the little things, as well as the big things.

1047. And when we have that constant attitude of prayer, we will see the glory and grace of Jesus.

1048. And it will cause us to rejoice more in him.

1049. You know, the hymn says,

1050. Oh, what peace we often forfeit.

1051. Oh, what needless pain we bear.

1052. All because we do not carry.

1053. Everything to God in prayer.

  1054. Whatever it is.

  1055. Your kid's temper tantrum.

  1056. That car park space.

  1057. Your work issues.

1058. We pray, not with demanding clenched fists that God's got to answer in our way.

1059. But with open hands, entrusting the things we care about to the God who cares more about us than we care even about him.

1060. And we do that again and again and again.

1061. Gordon Fee, who Kevin referenced last week, he's got this great quote.

  1062. He says,

1063. Peace comes because prayer is an expression of trust.

  1064. Did you hear that?

  1065. He said,

1066. Sometimes we need to wait.

1067. But actually, even in the waiting, we can thank God and see his goodness to us in Christ.

  1068. We walk together.

  1069. We rejoice always.

  1070. We pray thankfully.

1071. And the final thing is we focus on grace.

1072. Have you ever been talking to a very attractive looking person?

1073. And they had a big spot or piece of food on their face.

1074. And all you can do is fixate on that spot or that food.

1075. You can't see the person.

1076. That's what we're like in relational conflict.

  1077. That's what we're like when we're under stress.

1078. All we see is everything that's wrong.

1079. In the other person or in our circumstances.

1080. And we miss peace because like I said before, we don't see the gracious hand of God at work in our lives, in the people around us, and in the world around us.

  1081. That's why Paul says,

  1082. That's why Paul says,

1083. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, if anything is excellent or worthy of praise, think about these things.

  1084. He's saying,

  1085. He's saying,

1086. The person you have issues with, look for signs of grace.

1087. That tough situation you're in.

  1088. See where it's beautiful.

1089. See where there is truthness.

1090. See where there's something worthy of praise.

1091. And you'll see tiny reflections of a gracious, beautiful, truthful, just, pure, praiseworthy God.

1092. And make that your focus.

1093. We don't ignore issues, but we dwell on grace.

1094. And as we do these four things, we will see that we will become a kind of community that Hong Kong desperately needs.

1095. Hong Kong needs a community of peace and joy.

1096. We can't do it by ourselves.

1097. We've got to rejoice in Jesus.

1098. We've got to pray continually.

1099. We've got to fix our eyes on the right things.

1100. But if we're to be a people of that calm confidence and reconciled relationships in this sea of fear and hostility,

1101. we need to make space for it.

  1102. Can I be honest?

1103. I'm going to finish with this.

1104. Many of us are restless.

1105. Many of us are anxious.

1106. Many of us are intense relationships.

1107. Because we have an unguarded fortress in our hearts and our minds.

1108. The reason is we just haven't made space in our minds, in our hearts, and in our schedules for the rejoicing in God.

1109. And for other people to invite others in to walk with us in our issues.

1110. You know, anxious people cram their days full to try and be as efficient as possible.

1111. Anxious people are always on their phones.

1112. Anxious people are always listening to other anxious people.

1113. And always engaging with anxious news all the time.

1114. And that's what fills your mind.

1115. This church doesn't need more headless, chicken, hurried people.

1116. It needs a people who are pursuing the God of peace.

1117. So much that we're going to make radical decisions to make space to rejoice in him.

  1118. What does that mean?

  1119. Well, just think.

1120. Do you plan in your week for time to rejoice in Jesus?

  1121. Jesus.

1122. Every day, switch off your phone for 30 minutes.

1123. And focus on Christ and his word.

  1124. Pick up the phone.

  1125. Text someone.

1126. Invite them into your issues right now.

1127. Set aside a day or half a day, if you can only do that, to Sabbath.

1128. With your family or in community.

1129. And don't just think about it.

1130. You've actually got to do it.

1131. You've got to plan it.

1132. You've got to put it in there.

1133. Because your joy and your peace is at stake.

1134. Are we willing to take the steps to deal with relational conflict?

1135. Realizing that Jesus died to make us this kind of people.

1136. And the peace of God, which surpasses all your great thinking,

1137. will guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus.

1138. And the God of peace will be with us.

  1139. Do we want that?

  1140. Do we want that?

  1141. Let me pray.

1142. Maybe you just actually want to do business with God right now.

1143. Just feeling, is there a restlessness in your soul?

1144. Maybe you're actually just feeling just a bit out of sorts with God at the moment.

1145. And the idea of joy in him seems a million miles away.

1146. Maybe you've actually been pressing into God.

1147. But it feels like it's just been hard.

1148. Wherever you are, I just want you to bring where you are to God right now.

1149. I want you to be real with him.

1150. And I want you to ask him for a supernatural work of his spirit to fill you with the joy of seeing Jesus in the gospel,

  1151. in everything around you,

1152. in hope, in grace, in power,

1153. to realize that he's what you need.

  1154. Father, I pray,

1155. make us a people of peace and joy.

  1156. I pray, Lord,

1157. where there is tensions in our relationships,

1158. don't let us go another day,

  1159. just letting that drift.

  1160. Lord, I pray

1161. that we would come to you,

  1162. the God of peace,

  1163. and find mercy,

  1164. find grace,

1165. find reconciliation and power to live

  1166. a joy-filled life.

1167. Let us be more consumed with you

1168. than with all the things that we chase after,

1169. realizing to become more like you

1170. is the greatest joy we can have

1171. because you are the greatest joy there is in the world.

1172. Fill us more with that joy,

  1173. I pray.

  1174. In Jesus' name,

  1175. Amen.
