  1. Father, we're going to look at a part of your word that most Christians don't read or think about.

  2. And so we ask very much for your help, that the Holy Spirit would help us to understand

  3. why such an odd passage of scripture is in the Bible, why you would put it there.

  4. And Father, we ask that you would bring your word close to our heart.

  5. Make us disciples of Jesus who are gripped by the gospel, learning to live for your glory.

  6. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  7. Amen. You know, friends, it's a very interesting time, obviously, unprecedented.

  8. These are all like cliches.

  9. You know, one of the things that it's really, it'd be really interesting as we get to talk about this,

  10. maybe when the pandemic's all over.

  11. But as many of you know, there's sort of like a, there was almost a pandemic of loneliness

  12. in much of Canadian society, even before this pandemic has, at least the way it's being dealt with right now,

  13. calling for social isolation.

  14. And I, you know, I think about it a little bit for people who already struggle with loneliness and isolation,

  15. people who already are struggling with broken relationships and maybe being estranged from their family

  16. or having no family at all.

  17. To add on top of all of that, this call for social isolation, it must be very hard for many people,

  18. including many of you who are listening to this, just on top of the normal stress that comes from this.

  19. And on top of that, you know, many of us in Canada struggle with trust.

  20. You know, we've been hurt in relationships with our parents or with bosses or institutions that were supposed to help us

  21. or that we believed in at one point in time and they've let us down.

  22. And so here we have a situation where a pandemic comes into us as a culture,

  23. into people like you and me who already maybe struggle with isolation,

  24. already maybe struggle with loneliness, already maybe struggle with being alienated from others

  25. and already struggle in some cases with trust, trust of other people, trust of institutions.

  26. We're going to look at it really, as you might have heard in the prayer,

  27. we're looking at a very odd biblical text today.

  28. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Bible or maybe you're very young Christians

  29. or maybe you're just curious about what Christians would say,

  30. so you're listening in on this, sort of as almost like doing anthropological research

  31. on some strange and exotic tribe.

  32. This is a text that we're going to be looking at that Christians rarely read

  33. and they rarely, you rarely have sermons on this.

  34. The text we're looking at this week and the text we're looking at next week.

  35. We're looking at it not because we are odd, although maybe many of us are,

  36. but one of the things that we do at Church of the Messiah is we preach through books of the Bible.

  37. The Bible, Judges, was written as a book and we study it as a book.

  38. We begin at the beginning and go right through to the end.

  39. And one of the good things about that is it forces us to look at things

  40. that maybe we wouldn't otherwise look at and address topics

  41. that maybe I wouldn't have the courage to address.

  42. But that's why we're going to be looking at it.

  43. So it's an odd story.

  44. And one of the things which is especially odd about it is that...

  45. Well, here, I'll back up a little bit.

  46. The book of Judges, we're going to be looking at chapter 17 and 18.

  47. And it takes place, it's written about this time period

  48. after Moses has taken the people of Israel out of Egypt.

  49. And because of their sin, they wander in the wilderness.

  50. And now they've come to the edge of the promised land and Moses dies.

  51. And Joshua is the one who gets them into the promised land.

  52. And then Joshua dies.

  53. And the book of Judges takes place...

  54. It looks at what happens between the death of Joshua

  55. and the Israelites entering the promised land.

  56. And when you have...

  57. Many of you would have heard of the first kings of Israel, Saul, but especially David.

  58. And this time period, really, between the rise of Saul and then David,

  59. the very first kings in Israel, and coming into the promised land,

  60. that's what's being described here in the book of Judges.

  61. And one of the problems about this text is that for Christians,

  62. like there's nothing good that happens in this story.

  63. Everything in this story is bad from a Christian point of view.

  64. And to look at this text, there's an extra complication

  65. because what the Bible is describing as bad

  66. is what Canadians think of as good.

  67. So that causes a problem as well for us.

  68. And so I'm going to talk about all of those things,

  69. see how we navigate.

  70. But having said all of that,

  71. remember I said I began by talking about relationships.

  72. And once we sort of get through

  73. why it is that Christians, the Bible describes these things as bad

  74. that Canadian society describes as good,

  75. it actually opens a door to talk about

  76. the importance of personal relationships

  77. and social isolation and trust.

  78. And actually the story is a very, very profound

  79. and wise insight into things like this.

  80. So let's begin.

  81. It's Judges chapter 17.

    Judges 17 chapter mention

  82. And we're not going to be able to read all of it.

  83. Some of it, I'll just tell you the story.

  84. Some of it we'll read,

  85. but we'll begin at Judges chapter 17, verse 1.

    Judges 17:1

  86. There was a man of the hill country of Ephraim,

  87. whose name was Micah.

  88. And he said to his mother,

  89. the 1100 pieces of silver that were taken from you,

  90. about which you uttered a curse,

  91. and also spoke it in my ears.

  92. In other words, he personally heard his mom utter a curse

  93. on whoever stole her 1100 pieces of silver.

  94. Behold, the silver is with me,

  95. her son says.

  96. I took it.

  97. And his mother said,

  98. blessed be my son by the Lord,

  99. which is a very odd response.

  100. So just sort of pause there

  101. before we read the next little bit.

  102. So if you're a bit unfamiliar with the Bible,

  103. Jewish people, if you have Jewish friends,

  104. they're not part of a tribe.

  105. But originally, the Jewish people

  106. all would have been able to say

  107. which one of 12 tribes they were part of.

  108. So Ephraim is one of those tribes.

  109. So we're talking about a Jewish person here.

  110. And what Micah does is he steals

  111. 1100 pieces of silver from his mom.

  112. I don't know what that would be like in today's dollars.

  113. That might be like stealing $20 million.

  114. That's like a lot of money, $10 million.

  115. It's a pile of money.

  116. So Micah's rich.

  117. His mom is rich.

  118. He rips off his mom.

  119. And I don't know what you think about curses.

  120. And I'm not going to get into a little bit of a,

  121. I'm not going to get into a discussion about curses.

  122. But Micah believes in curses.

  123. And what motivates him to give the money back

  124. is that his mom has pronounced a curse

  125. on whoever stole the money.

  126. And Micah believes in curses.

  127. He gets very, very worried.

  128. And so this is what, how the story opens.

  129. He says to his mom that he's, he's stolen the mom.

  130. And that little bit about the Lord bless, et cetera, et cetera.

  131. It's the mom revoking the curse and asking for a blessing

  132. because it's her son.

  133. And I guess she has the money back.

  134. So what happens next?

  135. Well, here's where things get interesting.

  136. Verse three.

  137. And he restored, that's Micah,

  138. restored the 1100 pieces of silver to his mother.

  139. And his mother said,

  140. I dedicate the silver to the Lord from my hand for my son

  141. to make a carved image and a metal image.

  142. Now, therefore, I will restore it to you.

  143. So when he restored the money to his mother,

  144. his mother took 200 pieces of silver

  145. and gave it to the silversmith

  146. who made it into a carved image and a metal image.

  147. And it was in the house of Micah.

  148. And the man Micah had a shrine

  149. and he made an ephod and household gods

  150. and ordained one of his sons who became his priest.

  151. Now we'll just sort of pause there.

  152. So what's going on right here?

  153. I'll be right up front about it.

  154. So what he's actually,

  155. what the mom has done is the mom has said,

  156. I want you to make some gods, idols, gods.

  157. In a sense, they wouldn't have thought of them as idols.

  158. They would have thought of them as gods.

  159. And we think of them as idols,

  160. but they would have thought of them as gods.

  161. And even though she says that she worships the Lord,

  162. the God of Israel, the God of Christians as well,

  163. the fact of the matter is,

  164. is that she might worship some version of that God,

  165. but she has gods of her own,

  166. which she finds far more meaningful.

  167. And these gods of her own

  168. that she finds far more meaningful

  169. because she's a very spiritual person.

  170. She wants to have them represented

  171. and present, so to speak, in her life

  172. in such a way that she can give herself

  173. and get meaning in these gods of her own choosing.

  174. Like in a sense,

  175. you could say it's a curated spirituality.

  176. It's a bespoke spirituality.

  177. So here we begin to see actually part of the problem.

  178. If you think about it for a second,

  179. and for some of you listening,

  180. you can see a little bit of a problem here.

  181. In Canada, there's sort of two groups.

  182. In Canada, there's one group that sort of says,

  183. in fact, likes having a type of bespoke spirituality,

  184. a type of curated spirituality,

  185. where you take bits and pieces of things

  186. which are meaningful,

  187. and maybe it's something from Miles Davis,

  188. something from Hinduism,

  189. something from Buddhism,

  190. something from Judaism,

  191. something from the Kabbalah,

  192. and you curate it,

  193. you put it together in such a way

  194. that is very, very meaningful to you,

  195. and you would say that you're a very spiritual person.

  196. And in Canada, there's many, many people

  197. who would understand themselves in this particular way.

  198. And then, of course, in Canada,

  199. there's a large number of people

  200. who think that that's just bunk,

  201. that it's just ridiculous,

  202. that you shouldn't bother with such things.

  203. And by and large, in Canada,

  204. both groups more or less get along.

  205. They just let each other live their own life.

  206. And so here's part of the problem.

  207. The part of the problem is

  208. that if you read this whole story

  209. from the biblical point of view,

  210. what the mom and the son are doing is wrong.

  211. It's not just sort of like the way

  212. a secular, more atheistic person

  213. who hears about your love of crystals

  214. might sort of roll their eyes

  215. or something like that.

  216. But, you know, then you're going to live and let live.

  217. You just do what you do,

  218. and I'll do what I'll do,

  219. and we'll get along fine.

  220. The Bible actually views that as wrong,

  221. that it's like a very serious type of mistake.

  222. And so it's actually describing as wrong

  223. what a large number of Canadians think is good.

  224. So this idea of the mom with her different gods

  225. and her bespoke spirituality,

  226. her curated spirituality,

  227. from the biblical point of view,

  228. this is wrong.

  229. Now, that's a bit of a problem,

  230. and I'm going to address it in a moment,

  231. but it gets even worse in the next bit,

  232. because at least with this bit,

  233. it might sound as if the Bible is taking the side

  234. of those more secular friends of ours in Canada

  235. who sort of will roll their eyes at this.

  236. But in fact, the very next thing that the Bible says

  237. shows that there's a problem

  238. not just between the Bible and the Christian faith

  239. and people who like their curated spirituality,

  240. but also for the people who roll their eyes

  241. and are secular,

  242. because here's what the very next bit says.

  243. And this is, by the way,

  244. how you understand that the Bible is actually,

  245. this whole story is describing

  246. something that the Bible thinks is wrong.

  247. In fact, in terms of the book of Judges,

  248. what's happening right here is this.

  249. The way the book of Judges is structured

  250. is you have sort of two introductions.

  251. It sort of gives you a 10,000 feet in the air,

  252. biblical slash Christian understanding

  253. of what you're about to read

  254. in the rest of the book.

  255. And then from chapter three on to last week,

  256. we have the story of 12 different judges who,

  257. judges is a good word,

  258. but it really means a type of deliverer

  259. that God raises up to deliver people

  260. when they get into trouble.

  261. And what we're gonna see in this story and next story

  262. is it's as if we have two case studies

  263. of what life was like in Israel

  264. that they needed to be delivered from.

  265. They needed to be saved from.

  266. So here you can very well imagine

  267. some of you who like bespoke,

  268. curated spiritualities,

  269. I've now been a bit offensive to you.

  270. So I just ask that you grant me a little bit of mercy

  271. as we just talk about this a little bit more

  272. to at least try to maybe,

  273. yeah, just give me a little bit of mercy,

  274. a little bit of time.

  275. But this next bit in terms of describing

  276. what's wrong with what just happened

  277. and wrong in general,

  278. well, listen to it.

  279. It's chapter 17, verse 6.

  280. In those days, there was no king in Israel.

  281. That's not a big deal for most of us.

  282. Most Canadians aren't monarchists.

  283. But here's the thing.

  284. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  285. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  286. Now, here's another big problem.

  287. You see, for Canadians,

  288. that's a good thing.

  289. Like whether you believe in a type of bespoke,

  290. curated spirituality,

  291. or whether you believe that you're going to follow

  292. one of the more historic other faiths

  293. of Buddhism or Hinduism or Islam,

  294. or whether you think the whole thing is bunk,

  295. for most Canadians,

  296. other than probably those people who follow Islam,

  297. for most Canadians,

  298. this idea that everyone did what was right

  299. in their own eyes,

  300. that's actually like a good thing.

  301. Whether you, you know,

  302. are spiritual,

  303. or whether you're just like Jack Daniels

  304. in NFL football,

  305. like,

  306. doing right in your own eyes

  307. is what makes Canada great.

  308. And Canada,

  309. the world needs more of Canada.

  310. I mean,

  311. that's one of the things

  312. that they used to say on the buses

  313. and other types of slogans.

  314. And here,

  315. the Bible is using it as a short form

  316. to describe what's wrong.

  317. Now,

  318. I'm going to just highlight

  319. what happens next.

  320. What happens next

  321. is just the mom

  322. at the personal level

  323. and the,

  324. and Micah

  325. at the personal level

  326. just acting out

  327. what it means

  328. to have a bespoke,

  329. curated spirituality.

  330. And they,

  331. they set up their shrine

  332. and they set up their gods.

  333. And then they,

  334. after they,

  335. they find that there's a better person

  336. to sort of act

  337. as their spiritual advisor,

  338. their guru,

  339. their priest.

  340. And they hire him on

  341. just as people hire on coaches

  342. or hire on,

  343. you know,

  344. relationships with spirits,

  345. get financial relationships

  346. with spiritual masters.

  347. And that's what happens

  348. in the rest of the story.

  349. And then what happens

  350. in chapter 18

  351. is that this whole thing

  352. is described,

  353. it sort of moves up a level

  354. beyond the individual

  355. to the corporate level.

  356. And that's what happens

  357. in chapter 18

  358. in terms of

  359. there's a whole tribe now,

  360. which also wants to have

  361. a type of bespoke spirituality,

  362. a curated spirituality.

  363. And at the same time,

  364. they're trying to sort of

  365. just make a way

  366. for themselves,

  367. make themselves prosperous,

  368. all very,

  369. very Canadian,

  370. all sounds very,

  371. very good.

  372. And they're looking

  373. for a land to settle in.

  374. And the parts of the story

  375. which aren't very good,

  376. which we'll talk about

  377. a little bit more

  378. in a moment,

  379. are as part of that,

  380. they,

  381. and this happens,

  382. right,

  383. they steal

  384. the shrine

  385. and the gods

  386. of Micah

  387. and they steal

  388. the priest

  389. and they bring him along

  390. so that he can be

  391. the priest

  392. and these can be the gods

  393. for an entire tribe.

  394. And then there's some land

  395. that they really like

  396. and there's an area

  397. that they really like

  398. and they ask the advice

  399. of their gods

  400. through this curated priest,

  401. the priest that they've chosen

  402. for themselves,

  403. their spiritual father,

  404. their guru,

  405. their spiritual master

  406. and he gives them

  407. an ambiguous answer

  408. that basically says

  409. they should go ahead

  410. and do this

  411. and they go ahead

  412. and do it

  413. and they steal the priests,

  414. they steal the gods,

  415. they steal the spirituality,

  416. they make it their own,

  417. it's all still bespoke,

  418. isn't it?

  419. Although they stole it

  420. and they then go

  421. and they attack a land

  422. and they kill people

  423. and they steal the land

  424. and they make it their own

  425. and that's what

  426. chapter 17 and 18

  427. is all about.

  428. So how do we sort of

  429. talk about it

  430. and how do we

  431. understand

  432. what's just happened?

  433. So just to put it

  434. very bluntly

  435. for those of you

  436. who are listening in

  437. and trying to think

  438. how on earth is,

  439. what is George

  440. going to ever possibly say

  441. about such an outrageous story

  442. is the first problem

  443. is this,

  444. is many Canadians

  445. would say

  446. how dare God,

  447. at least you George,

  448. tell people

  449. how to worship?

  450. Like how dare you?

  451. Like what gives you

  452. the right

  453. to say something

  454. like that to people?

  455. And then the second thing

  456. which is even more important

  457. because

  458. you know

  459. even the secular people

  460. who roll their eyes

  461. when somebody talks

  462. about their crystals

  463. or their tarot cards

  464. or their yoga

  465. and the secular person

  466. rolls their eyes

  467. but even they

  468. probably would be

  469. a bit bothered

  470. that I'm actually

  471. telling them

  472. how to worship.

  473. And then the second thing

  474. is how dare

  475. God,

  476. the Bible,

  477. tell us how to live?

  478. Like how dare God

  479. do that?

  480. Here's what Christians

  481. would say

  482. what's going on

  483. in the stories.

  484. There used to be

  485. somebody in my

  486. immediate circle

  487. of friends

  488. family

  489. who had a daughter

  490. who had an imaginary

  491. friend.

  492. Very true.

  493. I can't remember now

  494. if it was a year or two

  495. that lasted.

  496. They were quite young

  497. but they were quite

  498. old enough to speak

  499. and they were

  500. a very,

  501. very articulate child

  502. and I'm not going to

  503. tell what the imaginary

  504. friend's name was

  505. or anything like that

  506. but this was somebody

  507. very, very well known

  508. to me and to our family

  509. and they had an imaginary

  510. friend which lasted

  511. for several years.

  512. This person would tell us

  513. about the things they did

  514. with their imaginary

  515. friend and where the

  516. imaginary friend lived

  517. and where they went to

  518. school and what they

  519. studied together.

  520. Now this would be

  521. pretty sad.

  522. It was sort of odd,

  523. endearing and odd

  524. and they were just young

  525. and everybody who knew

  526. and loved this young

  527. child,

  528. this child,

  529. hoped that they would

  530. grow out of it

  531. and they did

  532. and she's a spectacular

  533. young woman today.

  534. Just as sane

  535. as any of you

  536. or just as sane

  537. as me

  538. and she'd probably say

  539. she's more sane

  540. than me but that's

  541. a whole other story

  542. but she grew out of it

  543. but it would have been

  544. pretty sad

  545. if it continued on.

  546. Like if she continued

  547. to talk and act

  548. as if she had

  549. an imaginary friend

  550. and everybody wouldn't

  551. think it was endearing.

  552. They'd think there was

  553. something seriously

  554. wrong with this person

  555. and it would endanger

  556. this person

  557. from having real

  558. relationships

  559. with real people.

  560. So just to be

  561. completely and utterly

  562. clear,

  563. at the very heart

  564. of this text

  565. and the very heart

  566. of this Christian claim,

  567. the very heart

  568. of my belief

  569. as a Christian,

  570. as a follower

  571. of Jesus,

  572. is that there is

  573. a God that does exist

  574. who's real.

  575. In fact,

  576. he's in a sense

  577. the most real thing

  578. in existence

  579. compared,

  580. I only have,

  581. I'm real,

  582. you're real

  583. but whatever reality

  584. you have

  585. and I have

  586. only comes

  587. because this,

  588. in a sense,

  589. more deeply real,

  590. eternally real God

  591. has created you and me

  592. and sustains you and me.

  593. Our reality,

  594. in a sense,

  595. comes from him,

  596. is derived from him

  597. but he has real reality.

  598. This God has,

  599. he's real

  600. and so that's

  601. what's behind this text

  602. and so if you think

  603. about it to,

  604. in a sense,

  605. if you understand that

  606. then what you can understand

  607. is to,

  608. for those Canadians,

  609. those of us

  610. who understand

  611. and value

  612. a bespoke,

  613. curated type

  614. of spirituality,

  615. well it would be

  616. a little bit like this.

  617. My wife is real,

  618. she's not on camera,

  619. some of you know my wife

  620. but she's real

  621. and you can't just say

  622. anything you want

  623. about my wife.

  624. Like because she's real,

  625. some things are true

  626. about her

  627. and some things are false.

  628. Some things are,

  629. you might think of them

  630. as a compliment

  631. but they're actually offensive.

  632. Some of you

  633. have heard the story,

  634. if I ever write a book

  635. on marriage,

  636. it'll be,

  637. it'll be something

  638. to the effect,

  639. the subtitle will be

  640. all of the dumb wrong things

  641. that I've ever said

  642. that I want to share with you

  643. so you don't say them

  644. or something like that.

  645. I remember once

  646. I said to my wife

  647. that she was aging beautifully.

  648. I'm really dumb.

  649. I actually meant it

  650. as a compliment

  651. and I was actually

  652. taken aback

  653. when she didn't,

  654. she wasn't happy

  655. with that particular compliment

  656. but you get what

  657. I'm talking about,

  658. don't you?

  659. Is that,

  660. in a sense,

  661. if there really is

  662. a real God,

  663. then if you have

  664. a bespoke spirituality

  665. or a curated spirituality

  666. and you say things

  667. about this God,

  668. they're either just

  669. wildly wrong

  670. or just wildly wrong

  671. in a way

  672. which is offensive

  673. to some person

  674. who's real,

  675. you'll see that

  676. there's going to be,

  677. then this text

  678. can be talking about

  679. how these different ways,

  680. because what goes on

  681. in the rest of the story

  682. is you can't just set up

  683. anybody that you want

  684. to be your priest

  685. because God

  686. has determined a way,

  687. has revealed a way

  688. to have priests

  689. and you can't just say

  690. whatever you want to do

  691. is how you worship him

  692. because God

  693. has revealed who he is

  694. and what his character

  695. and nature is like

  696. and how that fits

  697. with our character

  698. and our nature

  699. and in a sense

  700. then how we can

  701. worship him

  702. in a way which fits

  703. at a very deep level

  704. with who an individual

  705. was made to be,

  706. is made to be

  707. and what God is like

  708. and so you just can't

  709. on one hand

  710. be spiritual

  711. and just say

  712. whatever you want

  713. if there actually

  714. is a real God.

  715. And to our secular friends,

  716. it's this,

  717. if one of the things

  718. which,

  719. and she's completely right,

  720. if sometime,

  721. if I'm at a church thing

  722. with a lot of church things

  723. or people that I know

  724. or, you know,

  725. another congregation

  726. or something

  727. and Louise is with me

  728. and people say hi to me

  729. and talk to me

  730. and ignore her,

  731. well,

  732. that bothers her

  733. and when I tell you that,

  734. every single one of you

  735. would agree

  736. that it's right

  737. for her to be bothered

  738. because she's right there

  739. and she's being ignored

  740. and so in a sense

  741. to our secular Canadian friends

  742. we say there really is a God

  743. who really does exist

  744. and to act as if

  745. he doesn't exist

  746. is to ignore him

  747. and is to in fact

  748. have a type of very,

  749. very fatal type of mistake.

  750. But,

  751. and that's sort of then how

  752. we'd say

  753. that this text

  754. for Christians

  755. is a warning

  756. about how

  757. you just can't sort of

  758. take bits and pieces

  759. of the Bible

  760. because the Bible

  761. is the way

  762. Christians believe

  763. that God has revealed

  764. truth about what it means

  765. to be human

  766. and truth about himself.

  767. You can't just pick and choose

  768. or go in other directions

  769. because of the reality of God

  770. and our need to learn from him

  771. how he is.

  772. And it's the same then

  773. with the morality.

  774. I talked about this more

  775. a couple of weeks ago.

  776. I just want to give you

  777. a different type of analogy.

  778. One of the problems

  779. with the right and wrong

  780. is this,

  781. that

  782. in the story

  783. what happens

  784. with the

  785. self-made gods,

  786. the curated spirituality,

  787. is

  788. because

  789. we've chosen

  790. this type of spirituality,

  791. they've chosen

  792. this spirituality

  793. for themselves,

  794. it ends up,

  795. well,

  796. it ends up just sort of

  797. never checking

  798. the selfishness

  799. of people

  800. and it never

  801. pushes back

  802. it doesn't,

  803. it ends up just in the story.

  804. If you go back

  805. and you read chapter 18,

  806. it just,

  807. in a sense,

  808. the spirituality

  809. ends up enabling evil.

  810. And I'm not saying

  811. that every Canadian

  812. who has a bespoke spirituality

  813. enables evil,

  814. but we can all sort of

  815. understand a little bit

  816. that if you choose

  817. a type of spiritual path

  818. yourself,

  819. the great danger

  820. could be

  821. that it

  822. feeds into

  823. selfishness

  824. and self-centeredness

  825. and won't act

  826. as a check

  827. on some of the things

  828. that any individual

  829. will do

  830. that's wrong.

  831. And I'll give you

  832. a bit of an illustration

  833. once again

  834. thinking about my wife.

  835. If you knew my wife,

  836. you'd know that

  837. there's many things

  838. about her

  839. that are good

  840. and beautiful.

  841. And that means

  842. that if you want

  843. to get into

  844. a relationship

  845. with my wife

  846. as a friend,

  847. there's certain types

  848. of things

  849. that fit,

  850. that work,

  851. that fit

  852. with knowing

  853. the parts of her

  854. that are good

  855. and beautiful.

  856. They just fit.

  857. There's ways of talking,

  858. there's ways of behaving

  859. that fit.

  860. And this is then

  861. just amplified,

  862. you see,

  863. because from the Christian

  864. point of view,

  865. not only is there

  866. a real God

  867. that really exists,

  868. but this real God

  869. that really exists

  870. is also the one

  871. who's created all things.

  872. It's not that he's

  873. self-centered or peevish.

  874. A couple of years ago,

  875. I was in a coffee shop

  876. and there was a chapters

  877. connected to the coffee shop

  878. or an indigo books,

  879. whatever it is

  880. that they called it back then.

  881. I can't remember.

  882. It wasn't that long ago.

  883. And there was a very hairy,

  884. distracted mom,

  885. obviously just hoping

  886. that if she gave her kid

  887. a cookie and a juice box

  888. and she could have a coffee

  889. and you could just see

  890. when she sat down

  891. and you'd go,

  892. she's just really looking forward

  893. to having this coffee.

  894. And she was really hoping

  895. that she,

  896. with the juice box

  897. or the hot chocolate

  898. and the coffee,

  899. that her child

  900. would be quiet

  901. for a couple of minutes

  902. just so she could

  903. sort of, you know,

  904. focus and have

  905. some adult time.

  906. Many of us

  907. who've had kids,

  908. we all know

  909. what that's like.

  910. But the kid

  911. very quickly

  912. got restless

  913. and the mom

  914. happened to be sitting

  915. right very close

  916. to where the books

  917. and the cards were

  918. and the kid kept getting up

  919. and grabbing a card

  920. and grabbing this

  921. and grabbing that

  922. and the mom,

  923. mom would get upset with her

  924. and this is what the mom

  925. every time said to her.

  926. She didn't say,

  927. don't touch that,

  928. it's not yours,

  929. don't touch that,

  930. it's wrong.

  931. She said,

  932. don't do that,

  933. you're making me unhappy.

  934. Now that's a terrible

  935. moral lesson.

  936. But that's not

  937. what God is like.

  938. It's not as if God,

  939. the God,

  940. the real God

  941. who really does exist,

  942. if there really is a God

  943. that really does exist

  944. that's at all

  945. described by the Bible,

  946. it's not as if he just

  947. has this peevishness

  948. that you're doing things

  949. that make me unhappy.

  950. It's in fact that

  951. the God who does exist,

  952. and by the way,

  953. the God who does exist

  954. is good

  955. and he's made things

  956. out of his goodness

  957. and out of his love

  958. and there's in a sense

  959. a type of a fittedness

  960. to many things,

  961. not for everything,

  962. but for some very important

  963. and significant things.

  964. And so it is

  965. that if to know

  966. somebody like Louise,

  967. the good and beautiful parts

  968. and the wise parts

  969. of Louise,

  970. if there's certain ways

  971. of talking,

  972. behaving,

  973. and being

  974. that just fit

  975. with that,

  976. to know her

  977. in a good way,

  978. to have her know you

  979. in a good way

  980. as friend

  981. or as child

  982. or as son-in-law

  983. or daughter-in-law

  984. or grandchild

  985. or whatever,

  986. or in my case

  987. as husband,

  988. then how much more

  989. it is with God,

  990. you see,

  991. that there's a fittedness

  992. to things,

  993. a rightness

  994. to things

  995. that's not connected

  996. to God being peevish

  997. or just saying,

  998. you're making me unhappy.

  999. And so that's why

  1000. it is that

  1001. in this particular text,

  1002. these two things

  1003. that the Bible says

  1004. that people have

  1005. to be saved from

  1006. all foundationally

  1007. go around this idea

  1008. that there really

  1009. is a God

  1010. who does exist,

  1011. who's real.

  1012. And that if,

  1013. if somebody like me

  1014. is real

1015. or my wife is real

  1016. and there's things

1017. you could say about me

1018. that would be just untrue

1019. and that would be unkind

  1020. and would be,

  1021. I would be right

  1022. to be mad

  1023. if anybody's heard

  1024. you say certain things

  1025. about me,

  1026. they'd all say,

  1027. no, George is right

  1028. to be mad.

1029. Then if God has that

  1030. even greater reality

  1031. and an even greater,

  1032. in a sense,

  1033. is-ness,

  1034. identity,

  1035. edges,

  1036. then,

  1037. well then this,

  1038. this biblical text

  1039. actually starts to make

1040. an awful lot of sense.

  1041. Now,

  1042. here's the thing

  1043. about the God

  1044. that's described

  1045. in the Bible

  1046. and this is,

  1047. by the way,

  1048. once again,

  1049. getting back

  1050. to the personal relationships

  1051. which we're going

  1052. to end up with

  1053. because I'm starting

  1054. to move towards

  1055. wrapping this all up.

  1056. But what Christians believe

1057. and we only believe this

1058. because God has told us

1059. and he has told us this

  1060. not because we have

  1061. some private knowledge

  1062. but because God has

  1063. made it known publicly

  1064. through his word

1065. and I'm going to get to

  1066. in a moment

  1067. why we would believe

  1068. anything at all

  1069. in his word

  1070. but the God

  1071. who's revealed

  1072. that actually exists

  1073. is God in Trinity.

  1074. It's the Father

  1075. from all eternity.

  1076. Before there was

  1077. anything created

  1078. that there was

  1079. the Father

  1080. and the Son

  1081. and the Holy Spirit,

  1082. three persons,

  1083. one God

  1084. and from all eternity

1085. the Father loved the Son.

  1086. From all eternity

  1087. the Father revealed himself

  1088. to the Son

  1089. and from all eternity

1090. the Son loved the Father

  1091. and revealed himself

  1092. and the Father

  1093. was in a sense

  1094. good towards the Son

  1095. and the Son

1096. was good towards the Father

  1097. and the Holy Spirit

1098. is both in a sense

  1099. that movement

  1100. between the Father

  1101. and the Son

1102. and is himself a person

  1103. that is himself revealing

  1104. and is good

  1105. and is loving

  1106. and so that God

  1107. didn't need to create

  1108. because he was lonely.

  1109. God didn't have to

  1110. sort of create

  1111. so when he actually

  1112. created something

  1113. he could be good.

  1114. God isn't self-centered.

1115. God in his very nature

  1116. the triune God

1117. is a fullness of love

  1118. a fullness of goodness

  1119. and is a person

  1120. and reveals himself

1121. and so he made human beings

  1122. to communicate

  1123. to be together.

  1124. He made us social.

1125. He made us to know others

1126. and to be known by others

1127. just as he created us

  1128. to know God

1129. and to be known by God.

1130. And so some of you might say

  1131. well George okay

1132. like how do you know that?

  1133. Well here's the thing.

  1134. Christianity I think

  1135. is unique amongst all

  1136. the bespoke spiritualities

  1137. of the world

1138. and amongst all the religions

  1139. and spiritualities

  1140. of the world.

  1141. Only the Christian faith

  1142. lays down the gauntlet

1143. and it's put in a very succinct way

  1144. in 1 Corinthians chapter 15

    1 Corinthians 15:19

  1145. verses 19 and 20.

  1146. The whole chapter

  1147. of 1 Corinthians 15

1148. would be very good to read

1149. and here's what Paul says

  1150. and Paul is writing

  1151. Paul is a convert

  1152. to the Christian faith.

1153. He's seen the risen Jesus.

  1154. He's writing to a group

1155. of people about 17 years

  1156. 18 years after

  1157. the death and resurrection

  1158. of Jesus

  1159. or 20 years after

  1160. the death and resurrection

  1161. of Jesus

  1162. and they've become Christians

  1163. and he says this

  1164. in verse 19 and 20.

  1165. If in Christ

  1166. we have hope

  1167. in this life only

  1168. we of all people

1169. are most to be pitied.

  1170. Earlier he says

  1171. in verse 17

1172. if Christ has not been raised

  1173. your faith is futile

  1174. and you are still

  1175. in your sins.

  1176. And in verse 20

  1177. but in fact Christ

  1178. has been raised

  1179. from the dead

  1180. the first fruits

  1181. of those

  1182. who have fallen asleep.

1183. And then it goes on

  1184. and talks about

  1185. the great benefits

  1186. we have

  1187. from knowing

  1188. who Jesus is.

  1189. And you see

  1190. what the Bible says

  1191. what

  1192. not the Bible says

  1193. what

  1194. the great proof

  1195. of the Christian faith

  1196. is that Jesus

  1197. really lived

  1198. that's

  1199. nobody

  1200. doubts that nowadays

  1201. no serious scholar

  1202. doubts that Jesus lived

1203. and that Jesus really died

  1204. that he died

  1205. by crucifixion.

1206. Even the most skeptical scholars

  1207. accept that Jesus died

  1208. by crucifixion.

1209. And even the most skeptical scholars

  1210. acknowledge

1211. that they've never found the body

1212. and that the grave was empty

1213. and even the most skeptical scholars

  1214. will acknowledge

1215. that many many people will die

  1216. because of ideological reasons

1217. that many many people will die

1218. because they believe in Marxism

1219. and they'll give their life

  1220. for Marxism

1221. or for some other type

  1222. of secular philosophy

  1223. or ideology

1224. but the thing which is so amazing

  1225. about the Christian faith

  1226. is that people

  1227. died

  1228. because they made

  1229. the claim

  1230. that something was true

  1231. that it happened

  1232. that Jesus

  1233. had risen

  1234. from the dead.

  1235. That's why the grave

  1236. was empty

  1237. and that's why

  1238. the Christian faith

  1239. exploded

  1240. in Jerusalem

  1241. because he prophesied

  1242. that he would die

1243. he said that his death

  1244. and resurrection

1245. would vindicate who he is

1246. and what his message is

1247. and it is because of Jesus

  1248. Jesus believed the Bible

1249. so I believe the Bible

1250. Jesus revealed what God is like

  1251. and that's why I believe it

  1252. but it so fits

  1253. and it's so true

  1254. I challenge you

1255. if you want to know more about it

  1256. you can look up

  1257. Mike Lacona

  1258. and Gary Habermas

  1259. and their case

  1260. for the resurrection

  1261. there's many books

1262. that outline why it is

1263. that it's very likely true

  1264. that God

  1265. that Jesus

  1266. is God

  1267. the Son of God

1268. that he rose from the dead

  1269. and it's really

  1270. really spectacular

  1271. here's the wonderful

  1272. good news

  1273. is that God

  1274. the same thing

  1275. that God does

  1276. to authenticate

  1277. that he's real

  1278. the same evidence

  1279. that he provides

  1280. to indicate

  1281. that he is real

1282. and he wants to know you

1283. and be known by you

  1284. is the same thing

  1285. that God does

  1286. to deliver us

1287. and to make us right

  1288. with him

  1289. the same

  1290. it's not as if

1291. you have to go to one thing

  1292. to sort of understand

  1293. why God exists

  1294. and another thing

  1295. to understand

  1296. how it is

1297. that he wants to have

  1298. a relationship with you

1299. and will make you right

  1300. with him

  1301. the same thing

1302. that will make you right

  1303. with God

  1304. because I can't make myself

  1305. right with God

  1306. by myself

  1307. I'm alienated from God

  1308. as are you

  1309. I need a savior

  1310. just as you do

  1311. and the same thing

  1312. that saves us

  1313. is the same thing

  1314. that reveals

  1315. the reality

  1316. of the true

  1317. and living God

  1318. and so it is

1319. that we get out of

1320. that what we can get

  1321. out of this

  1322. is that God

  1323. isn't just sort of

  1324. an absent God

  1325. who's all love

  1326. and doesn't care

  1327. about the mess

  1328. that you're in

  1329. doesn't care

  1330. about the sense

  1331. of shame

  1332. or the sense

  1333. of lostness

  1334. or alienation

  1335. that you might have

1336. he's come to save you

1337. he's come to save you

  1338. because he desires

  1339. to be known

  1340. by ordinary people

  1341. like you and me

  1342. and the God

  1343. who is the source

  1344. of love

  1345. the source of goodness

  1346. the source of relationship

  1347. the source of beauty

  1348. the source of goodness

  1349. the source of mercy

  1350. is the same God

  1351. that's created you

1352. and wants to know you

  1353. and has redeemed you

1354. and he held nothing back

  1355. in redeeming you

  1356. in the death

  1357. the life and death

  1358. and resurrection

  1359. of his son

1360. and so he calls you

  1361. into relationship

  1362. with himself

  1363. and he is completely

  1364. and utterly trustworthy

  1365. and as he moves

  1366. more deeply

  1367. into your life

  1368. as the gospel

  1369. grips you

  1370. you can start

  1371. to learn

  1372. to trust him more

  1373. and here's the other

  1374. wonderful thing

  1375. just as I wrap

  1376. the sermon up

1377. is he doesn't call you

  1378. just to walk

  1379. by yourself

  1380. but he calls you

  1381. to walk with him

  1382. with others

  1383. that he calls us

  1384. to be together

  1385. as his people

  1386. in a sense

  1387. not only does he

  1388. restore us

  1389. to relationship

  1390. with himself

1391. he begins to restore us

  1392. with me

  1393. to a proper relationship

  1394. with myself

1395. he begins to restore me

  1396. to a proper relationship

  1397. with each other

  1398. as he calls us

  1399. to know Jesus

  1400. to follow Jesus

  1401. and we never walk

  1402. with Jesus alone

  1403. we walk with Jesus

  1404. in the company

  1405. of other people

  1406. hopefully a good

  1407. local church

1408. and so I just want

  1409. to encourage you

  1410. to consider Jesus

1411. and I want to encourage you

  1412. if you're a Christian

  1413. and you're not connected

1414. to a good local church

1415. to pray and ask the Lord

  1416. to direct you

1417. to a good local church

  1418. where the Bible

  1419. is preached

  1420. and the gospel

  1421. is proclaimed

  1422. where you will know

  1423. that Jesus loves you

  1424. that everything

1425. that needed to be done

  1426. to make you right

  1427. with him

  1428. was dealt with

  1429. by him

1430. and all you need to do

  1431. is receive it

  1432. by faith

  1433. and as the gospel

  1434. grips you

  1435. it will grip you

  1436. to a new relationship

  1437. with God

  1438. a new relationship

  1439. with yourself

  1440. and a new relationship

  1441. with others

  1442. and a new relationship

  1443. with society

  1444. and culture

1445. to seek to not only

  1446. share Jesus

1447. but to act in such a way

1448. that the city is blessed

  1449. let's bow our heads

  1450. in prayer

  1451. Father we ask

  1452. that you draw us

  1453. to Jesus

  1454. to help us

  1455. to be gripped

  1456. by the gospel

1457. and if there are any here

1458. who have not yet known

1459. Jesus as Savior and Lord

  1460. that they will come

  1461. to a saving faith

  1462. in Jesus

  1463. in Jesus name

  1464. Amen
