  1. The scripture reading today comes from Philippians chapter 4, starting at verse 10.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen or in your Bible.

  3. I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me.

  4. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity.

  5. Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.

  6. I know how to be brought low and I know how to abound.

  7. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.

  8. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

  9. Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble.

  10. And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia,

  11. no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only.

  12. Even in Thessalonica, you sent me help for my needs once and again.

  13. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit.

  14. I have received full payment and more.

  15. I am well supplied, having received from Epiproditus the gift you sent,

  16. a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God.

  17. And my God will supply every need of yours, according to his riches, in glory in Christ Jesus.

  18. To our God and Father, be glory forever and ever.

  19. Amen.

  20. Greet every saint in Christ Jesus.

  21. The brothers who are with me greet you.

  22. All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar's household.

  23. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

  24. Amen.

  25. Amen.

  26. Great.

  27. Thank you so much, Sherman.

  28. Welcome again.

  29. My name is Chris, if you don't know me.

  30. I'm one of the pastors here at Watermark.

  31. What I'd love to do as we just get into God's word and before we get into God's word is just

  32. to pray for us this morning.

  33. So let me pray.

  34. Father, I thank you that you're a God of life, that you're a God who wants to bring us abundance

  35. of joy and of contentment and of satisfaction in you, which overflows to others, Lord.

  36. Lord, I pray even this morning that you would speak to us wherever we're up to, Lord.

  37. Whether we're wrestling with decisions, as Kevin shared.

  38. Whether we are wrestling with discontentment in our own hearts.

  39. Lord, I pray for us, Lord.

  40. I pray for those who are teachers and those who are students and those who are parents,

  41. Lord, who are going back to school.

  42. I did it last week, this week, or the coming week.

  43. Lord, I pray that for them that there would be this real sense of you bringing protection,

  44. you bringing your blessing, but also you bringing a real deeper sense of joy in you

  45. through this process.

  46. I pray that you would be at the center of all of that, Lord.

  47. I pray for our young people.

  48. I pray that they would find joy in you, even as they go back to school, that actually they

  49. would see that you are the one who places them in this place for your kingdom and your

  50. glory.

  51. So I pray for today that you would speak to us through your word in Jesus' name.

  52. Amen.

  53. Okay, great.

  54. So we've been looking at the book of Philippians, and we're coming to the last section of the

  55. book today.

  56. And we're going to look at something about gospel partnership and what's the source of

  57. healthy partnerships and relationships.

  58. Partnerships are everywhere, whether it's in marriages, whether it's in community groups,

  59. whether it's in businesses.

  60. All around, we are involved in relational partnerships with different people.

  61. But I think there is actually in society and in the world, there's a couple of different

  62. types of partnership and relationships that people enter into.

  63. I call them egret partnerships and rhino partnerships.

  64. Okay.

  65. Now an egret, if you didn't know, is a bird.

  66. It is a white bird, which hangs around on the top of elephants.

  67. And what it does, it feeds off the parasites and the insects on elephants.

  68. And it's really a win-win situation.

  69. It's kind of a consumer relationship because the egret gets food for itself and the elephant

  70. gets rid of its itch.

  71. It's like, you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours, literally.

  72. And so the problem with this kind of relationship, if for some reason the elephant has got no more

  73. insects on him, well, the elephant's feeling fine, but the egret begins to then go, hmm,

  74. get grumbling, complaining, this elephant ain't good, let me go and find another one.

  75. That's egret relationships.

  76. They're consumer relationships.

  77. We're in it for what we can get out of it.

  78. But then there are male rhinos.

  79. Now rhinos, they are self-sufficient guys.

  80. They can fend for themselves.

  81. They don't need other people.

  82. They're detached.

  83. They're distant.

  84. If they need a mate or need something, they'll come in, they'll get it, and then they'll head

  85. out and do their own thing again.

  86. You know, they're the kind of people who when the going gets tough, the tough get going,

  87. and they're going to get going by themselves.

  88. You see, these kind of relationships, these partnerships characterize much of Hong Kong.

  89. Much of what we think of as love is actually egret-style relationship.

  90. You know, you make me feel good.

  91. I'll make you feel good.

  92. We'll stay together as long as that's still the case.

  93. Otherwise, we'll look elsewhere.

  94. Or in marriage, you know, after a while, we enter into the kind of rhino style.

  95. You do your thing, and I'll do my thing.

  96. We'll live under the same roof together, but functionally, we live separate lives unless

  97. there's something we need at that moment.

  98. But the book of Philippians has been showing us a different way of doing relationships

  99. and partnerships.

  100. It's Christ-centered partnership.

  101. You see, what you've seen, the whole of Philippians, you're seeing this partnership between Paul

  102. and the Philippians, which is birthed in Jesus, sustained in Jesus, and whose goal is Jesus.

  103. You see, it flows out and is characterized by Christ's sacrificial, generous love.

  104. It overflows in the whole of the book.

  105. Paul has said, I yearn for you guys with Christ's affection.

  106. I long for you.

  107. I love you.

  108. You're my joy.

  109. You're my crown.

  110. And he's poured his life and the gospel into this little church in Philippi.

  111. And the Philippians, in return, they've sent financial gift after gift.

  112. They've sent key leaders like Epaphroditus at huge cost to themselves.

  113. And 2 Corinthians 8 tells us that actually they did all of this out of a condition of

  114. extreme poverty, not out of a sense of wealth and abundance to encourage and support Paul,

  115. even in his darkest moments and in his best times.

  116. And right now, he's in prison.

  117. It's not a great time.

  118. It's not an egret relationship.

  119. It's not a rhino relationship.

  120. It's a Christ-centered relationship.

  121. And it could have been so different because Paul, stuck in this prison cell, lonely, hungry,

  122. dark, for a while, he gets no support from the Philippians.

  123. And instead of grumpiness, he's rejoicing.

  124. He's rejoicing in Jesus.

  125. He's so satisfied in Jesus that when Epaphroditus shows up with a financial gift, he doesn't go,

  126. oh, it's about time.

  127. Where have you guys been?

  128. Talk about a relationship.

  129. He goes, I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that now at length you have revived your concern for me.

  130. And that word concern is the word that's been used at least 10 times in the book of Philippians for the word mind.

  131. And it's a word meaning you're thinking of me.

  132. You're caring for me.

  133. His rejoicing in Jesus is actually not that just his physical needs were just met right now.

  134. But he's rejoicing that when Epaphroditus came to him, it spoke to Paul that actually in Jesus, his grace has come.

  135. You're still thinking of me.

  136. And so what I want us to look at is how do our relationships, how do our partnerships, how, whether it's in our marriages, our CGs, our friendships, our churches,

  137. how can we be characterized by that kind of non-entitled, non-detached, non-grumbling, generous, other-centered love?

  138. And Paul is going to give us the secret to this.

  139. And I'm going to spend much of today looking at this one word, contentment.

  140. So we're going to look at contentment, say how do we get there, and then we're going to look at a few implications and things that flow out, the fruit of contentment.

  141. So let's just get going in chapter 4, verse 10 and 11.

  142. Paul says,

  143. You see, Paul is really keen, as he's writing to the Philippians, that they don't get the wrong idea about his situation.

  144. He's got needs, but he doesn't want to manipulate them or guilt trip them into giving more.

  145. And particularly when he's talking about money, he's trying to help them see he's not just making a subtle request for more money.

  146. Instead, he says, I'm content, guys.

  147. And that word content was actually a very popular word used by a group of philosophers at the time called Stoics.

  148. And what they thought the word contentment meant was rhino contentment, meant using your willpower, just keep calm, carry on, no matter what the storms of life are, push through by yourself, don't rely on anyone else.

  149. You've got to be detached.

  150. And Paul is not saying that.

  151. He's saying, I'm not just, I have needs, but I'm not just needy.

  152. I'm not just self-sufficient.

  153. I'm Christ-sufficient.

  154. He says, in what a situation I am, I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

  155. You see, he's saying, even when you can't provide for me, I have one who continually sustains me.

  156. And that is Christ.

  157. Now, how can Paul find that contentment?

  158. Well, he's been telling us he's been pursuing knowing Christ and knowing this God in his life.

  159. The God who commands us to praise him is not a needy God.

  160. He doesn't need our worship.

  161. He doesn't need us at all to kind of stroke his ego.

  162. He's all-sufficient.

  163. As the creator of the galaxies, he is rich beyond compare.

  164. And yet he's not.

  165. He's all-sufficient, but he's not self-sufficient in some distant, detached way where he doesn't kind of care about us or need us.

  166. Or just care about us in any way.

  167. Rather, he's a contented, joyful God.

  168. And out of the overflow of his contentment, in fact, Paul says in the book of Timothy, he says,

  169. he is the blessed God.

  170. He's the happy God.

  171. He's the contented God.

  172. And out of the overflow of that, he's told us in Philippians 2 that out of joy and contentment in himself,

  173. God both created the world, but he also sent Jesus into the world.

  174. He came down into that J-curve of humbling himself, sacrificing himself to the point of death on a cross for us,

  175. so that we might be restored.

  176. But then he raised up again to life, and he's exalted at the highest place above all other names.

  177. He's raised in power for us, seated in glory for us.

  178. And if he has loved us with that kind of sacrifice, and if he has that kind of power over even death itself,

  179. and if he has even that kind of authority over all things to command worship,

  180. then Paul in Romans will say,

  181. if God has given us Jesus, then how will he not graciously give us all things?

  182. We don't have a stingy God.

  183. We don't have one who right in our current moment, we've got to wonder whether he's going to provide for us.

  184. Paul can say, no, I can trust this God that I know in any situation because I'm his beloved child.

  185. I don't have to get grumpy and irritable right now because I rest in him.

  186. Sinclair Ferguson, who's a theologian, he said this,

  187. Christian contentment is the direct fruit of having no higher ambition than to belong to the Lord

  188. and to be totally at his disposal in the place he appoints at the time he chooses

  189. with a provision he is pleased to make.

  190. What he's saying is this.

  191. He's saying contentment is founding knowing whose you are and trusting him with where you are.

  192. My son, Etienne, when he was born, came screaming out of the womb into this dizzying world of lights and sounds and smells.

  193. It's a scary place for a little kid.

  194. But doctors, they recommend that babies have what's called skin-to-skin time.

  195. In other words, in a scary and insecure environment, what happens is you bring the baby to the mother,

  196. to the one who has given this little baby life,

  197. and it's there that that baby will discover the warmth, the safety, the protection, and the provision of his mother.

  198. And it's there, at that place, that the crying stops and peace is found.

  199. His mother will provide for him.

  200. That is Christian contentment.

  201. We want Christ more than anything.

  202. And Jesus doesn't want an egret relationship with us,

  203. where he's died for us, so we've just got to do our bit, pray,

  204. do enough things in return to make him happy with us.

  205. He doesn't want a rhino relationship with us,

  206. where if we just come to him when we've got a problem,

  207. and the rest of the time we forget about him, do our own thing.

  208. No, Paul knows, he said, I can be content in Christ,

  209. because I have a relationship with him as his beloved child,

  210. knowing him is our highest ambition.

  211. We lay our lives in his hands,

  212. because he's a father who loves us,

  213. and will supply all of our needs.

  214. That's what Christian contentment is.

  215. That trusting that even Kevin talked about just now.

  216. But how do we get there?

  217. How do we get to that place of trusting our Father,

  218. and that Christ will supply all that we need?

  219. Paul says this.

  220. He says,

  221. I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.

  222. I know how to abound.

  223. I know how to be brought low.

  224. I know how to abound in any and every circumstance.

  225. I've learned the secret.

  226. I've learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger,

  227. abundance and need.

  228. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

  229. You see, what he's saying is contentment is learnt.

  230. Did you notice that?

  231. He said, I've learnt it.

  232. You don't suddenly wake up one day content.

  233. You see, that word, when he says contentment has a secret.

  234. He says there's a secret to it.

  235. And that word is actually a word that is used by the secret societies of Paul's time

  236. for the initiation ceremony that they would come into,

  237. into that little community.

  238. And what Paul is saying is,

  239. if you want to come into the school of contentment,

  240. you don't have to have some initiation ceremony.

  241. The initiation ceremony is Christ,

  242. and the sustaining ceremony is Christ.

  243. And when he says,

  244. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,

  245. that's one of the most misunderstood phrases

  246. in all of the New Testament, I think, by Christians.

  247. Because we often think,

  248. what he means by all things is,

  249. I can achieve anything.

  250. I can get that promotion.

  251. I can fulfill my dream.

  252. I can be a success in my life through Christ.

  253. That's not what Paul is talking about.

  254. Because if you look back to verse 12,

  255. all things refers to this.

  256. He says,

  257. I know how to be brought low,

  258. and I know how to abound in plenty or hunger.

  259. You see, how do we learn contentment?

  260. That school of contentment is in the humbling

  261. and in the abundance of all of life.

  262. You see, it's through classes of being brought low,

  263. just like Jesus was humbled.

  264. Financially, you lost your job.

  265. Spiritually, you have your sin

  266. and your failure exposed to you.

  267. Socially, you experience criticism,

  268. rejection, even for your faith.

  269. Physically, Paul was beaten.

  270. He was sick.

  271. He was stoned.

  272. He was shipwrecked.

  273. All of this was his school to learn contentment.

  274. You know, when Etienne was born,

  275. and with that skin-to-skin time,

  276. he still didn't actually know how much we really loved him.

  277. You see, how is Etienne going to learn how much we love him?

  278. Well, if you're parents of older kids,

  279. you know that they learn it through all of life.

  280. That actually, the sleepless nights where you're comforting your child,

  281. the times of taxing your child to every place under the sun,

  282. the struggling with homework and helping them come through it,

  283. later on, just all the relational issues that children have,

  284. or when they have their own family,

  285. or when they see other parents and they feel the pain of parenting,

  286. then they realize,

  287. I'd never realized just how much my parents loved me

  288. and sacrificed for me until this moment.

  289. You see, that's the same with God as he takes us through life.

  290. He's wanting it through all of the ups and downs of life

  291. to show us the depth of his love

  292. so that we can only learn that contentment as you go through life

  293. in him, trusting him.

  294. You know, some of us,

  295. we think that if I can just get a job,

  296. then I'll be happy.

  297. Or you think, if I can just get my kids in school,

  298. if I can just get a boyfriend,

  299. I can just get out of COVID,

  300. then everything will be fine.

  301. Then I'll be content.

  302. I think Paul would say,

  303. don't skip classes in the school of contentment.

  304. Don't wish your present away.

  305. He's not saying you can't long for something different.

  306. He's not saying you can't have a desire that things will change.

  307. But no, in this moment,

  308. God wants to bring you contentment.

  309. You see, in Hong Kong,

  310. we live in a world of comparison.

  311. We're always comparing to everybody else.

  312. We always want to be in a different class

  313. than we're in right now.

  314. But Christians, we didn't enroll in the school of envy.

  315. We enrolled in the school of contentment in Jesus.

  316. You see, graduates of the envy school

  317. have worry and fear.

  318. You know, it's a different education system.

  319. Worry and fear tell you,

  320. look at your problems, you won't have enough.

  321. Envy tells you,

  322. look at what they have, you don't have enough.

  323. The school of contentment says,

  324. look at Jesus, he is enough

  325. for you, today, right now,

  326. whatever you're going through.

  327. So I don't know where you're up to.

  328. But Paul is not here talking about that holy discontent,

  329. you know, where you can actually want to be more like Jesus.

  330. That's good.

  331. He's not talking about passivity,

  332. just kind of hanging back and just saying,

  333. oh, God will do it and I don't have to do anything.

  334. No, Paul's ambitious.

  335. But he's talking about resting in the sovereign God

  336. and trusting in his fatherly care for us

  337. that whatever circumstances he's brought you into right now,

  338. that he'll provide.

  339. You see, he says, I know how to be brought low.

  340. But he also says,

  341. and this is really interesting,

  342. he says,

  343. I've also learned how to face plenty

  344. and how to abound.

  345. Did you notice that?

  346. I don't know if you would normally think about that,

  347. but Paul himself,

  348. he has experienced all the different things in life.

  349. He's experienced abounding with a full stomach

  350. and everything going well,

  351. and he's not living with a guilt trip of,

  352. oh, I should be suffering at this moment.

  353. No, he's rejoicing.

  354. I've learned how to face it.

  355. Some Christians actually think we should just be

  356. living in a mud hut and poor,

  357. and that's the true sense of spirituality.

  358. Other people think you've got to be totally rich

  359. and blessed and everything,

  360. and that's spirituality.

  361. And Paul's saying,

  362. I don't believe in either of those things

  363. as true spirituality.

  364. I can enjoy abundance,

  365. but with open hands.

  366. He says,

  367. I've learned contentment even in abundance.

  368. You know, Spurgeon,

  369. the English preacher,

  370. he said this.

  371. He said,

  372. it is harder to know

  373. how to be full

  374. than it is to know how to be hungry.

  375. To know how to be hungry

  376. is a sharp lesson,

  377. but to know how to be full

  378. is the harder lesson after all.

  379. Do you know what he's saying?

  380. He's saying,

  381. when you're full,

  382. when you've got your promotion,

  383. when your relationships are going great,

  384. everything's swimmingly moving on,

  385. you might thank God for that,

  386. but secretly we applaud ourselves in that.

  387. Your contentment is often more with your comfort

  388. or more with your achievement

  389. or more of all the other things that you have,

  390. but not with Christ.

  391. And that self-sufficient,

  392. rhino-like attitude towards Jesus

  393. is devastating,

  394. because when later on in your life

  395. you may be brought low,

  396. your contentment will just be blown out of the water,

  397. because it was just dependent

  398. on the things that you had,

  399. not on Christ.

  400. I think many of us,

  401. if I can be honest with us,

  402. many of us,

  403. we don't know how to be content

  404. when we're full.

  405. Many of us actually are abounding

  406. in a lot of different ways in this city,

  407. but we haven't learnt

  408. that actually Christ is enough for us

  409. and that today is a stay

  410. of the school of contentment.

  411. You know,

  412. how can you be content today?

  413. Well, if you realise

  414. that you have to run to Jesus

  415. whatever your circumstances,

  416. if you are abounding,

  417. realise your abundance

  418. is not earned at all.

  419. It is undeserved gift.

  420. That's why Paul has said,

  421. like,

  422. think about all the good things,

  423. the great things,

  424. and see it as grace from God.

  425. That's showing you

  426. that God's heavenly bank account

  427. is far richer

  428. than you could possibly imagine.

  429. He can provide

  430. abundantly more

  431. than you can ask or imagine.

  432. But hold that

  433. with surrendered open hands,

  434. because it's all on loan.

  435. It's yours to steward,

  436. it's not yours to own.

  437. And God may bring you

  438. through times of need

  439. and lack

  440. and waiting for things,

  441. humbling times.

  442. Some of us are going

  443. through that right now.

  444. But you know,

  445. that's the chance

  446. to find contentment,

  447. because in that suffering,

  448. he's showing you,

  449. you didn't need

  450. all the other things

  451. to be content.

  452. He is sufficient for you.

  453. So that all the other gifts

  454. only point you to the giver.

  455. This is what Christ

  456. is trying to do.

  457. And if you're struggling

  458. today with contentment,

  459. because this is a fight,

  460. like we talked about

  461. fighting, rejoicing,

  462. fighting for joy last week,

  463. praying in all circumstances,

  464. bringing our requests

  465. to God.

  466. When we talked about

  467. letting our focus

  468. be on Christ

  469. in everything

  470. and doing it together,

  471. that's the wrestle

  472. that we've got to go through

  473. to fight,

  474. to find contentment.

  475. And if you're struggling,

  476. look back on

  477. Christ's faithful love

  478. in your life

  479. and see where he has

  480. provided again and again.

  481. So if you're in need

  482. right now,

  483. you can have confidence.

  484. Your God will supply

  485. all of your needs.

  486. That is contentment.

  487. Now why

  488. and how does that

  489. even connect

  490. with the idea

  491. of partnership

  492. and relationship?

  493. partnership?

  494. Well,

  495. why does Paul

  496. talk about this?

  497. He talks about this

  498. because

  499. he wants to show us

  500. that when you're content

  501. in Jesus,

  502. when you're content

  503. in Jesus,

  504. when you're not grasping

  505. from others

  506. or just detached

  507. from others,

  508. you can then overflow

  509. that on his mission

  510. with sacrificial generosity

  511. and in gospel

  512. partnership with others.

  513. So here's two things

  514. that it overflows.

  515. The first thing,

  516. there is an overflow

  517. of contentment

  518. in humble,

  519. generous partnership.

  520. Verse 14 to 16.

  521. It was kind of you

  522. to share,

  523. to fellowship,

  524. to partner

  525. in my trouble.

  526. And you

  527. Philippians know

  528. that in the beginning

  529. of the gospel,

  530. when I left

  531. Macedonia,

  532. no church

  533. entered into

  534. partnership,

  535. fellowship with me

  536. in giving and receiving

  537. except you only.

  538. Even in Thessalonica,

  539. you sent me

  540. help for my needs

  541. once and again.

  542. You see,

  543. Paul,

  544. twice there,

  545. uses this word

  546. for fellowship,

  547. for partnership,

  548. which is the word

  549. koinonia.

  550. And it's a word

  551. which means

  552. to have a common life

  553. together,

  554. to have a common goal

  555. together,

  556. to be focused

  557. on the same things

  558. together.

  559. together.

  560. And the friendship

  561. that these guys

  562. had grew out

  563. of a gospel

  564. contentment that

  565. led to partnering

  566. the gospel into

  567. giving and

  568. receiving.

  569. You see,

  570. when Paul brought

  571. the gospel to

  572. the Philippians

  573. and Paul's life

  574. into them,

  575. the Philippians

  576. have responded

  577. not out of a

  578. kind of,

  579. oh,

  580. we have to give

  581. you back,

  582. but out of this,

  583. what 2 Corinthians

  584. 8 says was

  585. an abundance

  586. of joy

  587. and their

  588. extreme poverty,

  589. they overflowed

  590. in a wealth

  591. of generosity

  592. on their part.

  593. Do you get that?

  594. They had joy

  595. in Jesus'

  596. contentment,

  597. that overflowed

  598. in generosity.

  599. Contentment

  600. means

  601. that even if

  602. you feel like

  603. your reserves

  604. are running low

  605. in a relationship,

  606. you're not getting

  607. back where you want,

  608. your tank feels

  609. empty,

  610. your spouse

  611. isn't responding,

  612. your finances

  613. are tight,

  614. whatever,

  615. you can both

  616. have the resources

  617. in Christ

  618. to be able to

  619. keep loving

  620. and lavishly

  621. giving,

  622. but also

  623. you have the

  624. humility to

  625. accept help

  626. when you do

  627. have needs

  628. because you're

  629. not self-sufficient

  630. like a rhino.

  631. Now,

  632. we could play

  633. this out in

  634. marriages,

  635. we could play

  636. it out in

  637. community groups,

  638. in lots of

  639. different places.

  640. Let me make

  641. this a broader

  642. church level.

  643. The early

  644. church

  645. didn't believe

  646. in isolated

  647. congregations.

  648. You see that

  649. in Philippians.

  650. Like,

  651. we don't need

  652. help from you,

  653. we're just

  654. building God's

  655. kingdom in

  656. our little

  657. area.

  658. No,

  659. they didn't

  660. think like

  661. that.

  662. They built

  663. these connections,

  664. these partnerships,

  665. they were a

  666. network of

  667. churches that

  668. mutually supported

  669. and encouraged

  670. one another

  671. in the mission

  672. of God

  673. wherever it

  674. led.

  675. You know,

  676. I think

  677. sometimes,

  678. even when we

  679. think about

  680. mission,

  681. for example,

  682. mission trips,

  683. many people,

  684. I think we

  685. do mission trips

  686. like rhino style

  687. where we think

  688. we're the ones

  689. who are going

  690. to go and

  691. save the poor.

  692. We're the ones

  693. who are going

  694. to rescue the

  695. needy in other

  696. places.

  697. And so we go

  698. as the heroes

  699. without having

  700. the humility

  701. to realize that

  702. actually partnership

  703. is not just one

  704. way,

  705. it's two way.

  706. And we will

  707. learn through

  708. that.

  709. We need

  710. humility.

  711. But partnership,

  712. it's not just

  713. us helping

  714. others,

  715. it's not just

  716. others helping

  717. us,

  718. it's a costly

  719. sense of us

  720. contending Christ

  721. and pouring

  722. things out to

  723. people around us

  724. as we can

  725. and receiving

  726. in ways that

  727. are appropriate.

  728. One of the

  729. things in

  730. Watermark we

  731. want to do

  732. is partner

  733. with local

  734. churches,

  735. international

  736. churches,

  737. churches in

  738. Hong Kong

  739. and churches

  740. around Asia

  741. for the cause

  742. of the gospel

  743. going forth.

  744. We cannot

  745. do the

  746. mission by

  747. ourselves.

  748. That means

  749. we need to

  750. be humble

  751. enough to

  752. receive people

  753. to help us

  754. and to walk

  755. alongside us.

  756. This is one

  757. of the reasons

  758. why we had

  759. Pastor Paul

  760. from the local

  761. church come

  762. and preach to

  763. us.

  764. We've had

  765. Al Gibbs

  766. come and

  767. we've had

  768. other people

  769. who just

  770. walk alongside

  771. different people

  772. in the

  773. congregation.

  774. This is part

  775. of what

  776. pastoring is.

  777. Today Oscar

  778. is preaching

  779. at Emmanuel

  780. English Church.

  781. What a great

  782. opportunity to

  783. pastor.

  784. We have our

  785. resound

  786. church here.

  787. network that

  788. we're part

  789. of with

  790. churches in

  791. places like

  792. India and

  793. Australia and

  794. Japan.

  795. Our prayer is

  796. some of us

  797. might be able

  798. to go over

  799. and to

  800. support and

  801. encourage them

  802. just as

  803. they came

  804. over last

  805. year and

  806. many of

  807. them actually

  808. encouraged us.

  809. God's vision

  810. for kingdom

  811. ministry is

  812. global.

  813. It's not

  814. territorial.

  815. We want to

  816. give away our

  817. best people.

  818. We want to

  819. give away

  820. resources.

  821. We want to

  822. partner with

  823. people like

  824. Amelia in

  825. Taiwan so

  826. that we can

  827. actually be

  828. blessing and

  829. encouraging the

  830. work that's

  831. there.

  832. Our prayer is

  833. that actually

  834. out of

  835. watermark more

  836. and more people

  837. will be able to

  838. send to the

  839. nations for the

  840. gospel.

  841. We even had a

  842. time last year

  843. when our budget

  844. was tight and

  845. we prayed,

  846. should we be

  847. giving more to

  848. missional justice

  849. partners?

  850. God's saying

  851. yes, I will

  852. supply all of

  853. your needs and

  854. God has

  855. abundantly.

  856. Whether we are

  857. financially tight,

  858. whether we're

  859. struggling,

  860. we always want

  861. the generosity

  862. of the contentment

  863. of God to

  864. fill our hearts

  865. so that we're

  866. not just tight

  867. but we want to

  868. be lavish and

  869. humble to

  870. receive as well

  871. when we need.

  872. See, the

  873. overflow of

  874. contentment leads

  875. to humble,

  876. generous partnership

  877. but also

  878. contentment leads

  879. is the final

  880. thing, to

  881. sacrificial worship.

  882. You know, the

  883. whole of the

  884. book of

  885. Philippians is

  886. a call to be

  887. on mission,

  888. making our

  889. greatest ambition

  890. to know Christ,

  891. to follow him

  892. together, to

  893. become like him

  894. and to make him

  895. known.

  896. You know, Jesus

  897. who's the one

  898. who was brought

  899. low is also

  900. the one who

  901. is exalted

  902. and everyone

  903. in this universe

  904. that one day

  905. will bow the

  906. knee and will

  907. confess that

  908. Jesus Christ

  909. is Lord.

  910. That is the

  911. heart.

  912. It's a call for

  913. each one of us

  914. because that is

  915. true, that we

  916. are willing to

  917. follow and

  918. imitate that

  919. J-curve life

  920. of suffering

  921. which leads to

  922. resurrection glory,

  923. of humbling

  924. which leads to

  925. life, of the

  926. way down being

  927. the way up,

  928. and this joy

  929. in Christ flows

  930. out as worship

  931. and praise to

  932. him because he

  933. alone deserves

  934. it.

  935. You see, right

  936. at the end of

  937. this book,

  938. Paul says that

  939. the Philippians,

  940. your love and

  941. your generosity

  942. was a fragrant

  943. gift,

  944. acceptable and

  945. pleasing to God.

  946. That's worship

  947. language he's

  948. using.

  949. And then he

  950. said, right at

  951. the end,

  952. it is all for

  953. the glory of

  954. God the

  955. Father who

  956. provides in so

  957. many ways.

  958. John Piper says

  959. God is most

  960. glorified in us

  961. when we are most

  962. satisfied in him.

  963. But I also think

  964. when we are most

  965. satisfied in him,

  966. we will also

  967. sacrifice the most

  968. for him on his

  969. mission because we

  970. know that he will

  971. provide abundantly

  972. for us.

  973. I had seven

  974. friends.

  975. Some of them

  976. graduated with me

  977. in the UK,

  978. all single,

  979. working men

  980. and women.

  981. And they felt

  982. God calling them

  983. to the Shamshay

  984. Pole of the

  985. city we were

  986. living in at the

  987. time.

  988. They were all

  989. working in

  990. different areas.

  991. They weren't

  992. working with the

  993. church.

  994. But they went

  995. to this place,

  996. this estate,

  997. where there was

  998. about 30,000 to

  999. 50,000 people

  1000. who had no

  1001. gospel witness.

  1002. And they moved

  1003. on to the

  1004. estate and they

  1005. took years of

  1006. just this slow,

  1007. painful process of

  1008. getting to know

  1009. the neighbors,

  1010. of hosting barbecues,

  1011. of trying to love

  1012. the people.

  1013. They ran pub

  1014. quizzes.

  1015. They did anything

  1016. to reach out to

  1017. the neighborhood

  1018. so that people

  1019. could experience

  1020. the love of

  1021. Christ through

  1022. them and the

  1023. gospel.

  1024. But they also

  1025. made this

  1026. commitment.

  1027. They said if

  1028. anyone actually

  1029. wants to date

  1030. us, you've

  1031. also got to be

  1032. willing to get

  1033. on the mission

  1034. that we're on.

  1035. And so we

  1036. want, like,

  1037. we're willing to

  1038. sacrifice whatever

  1039. it takes because

  1040. God has called

  1041. us.

  1042. You know, 15

  1043. years on, many

  1044. of them are in

  1045. their kind of

  1046. 40s now.

  1047. Some of them

  1048. are married.

  1049. Some of them

  1050. are still single.

  1051. And people have

  1052. said to them,

  1053. listen guys, you

  1054. are just crazy

  1055. for giving up

  1056. those opportunities

  1057. to have children,

  1058. to have family

  1059. because of this

  1060. mission.

  1061. That's ridiculous.

  1062. Others have

  1063. said, hey, you've

  1064. sacrificed career

  1065. opportunities.

  1066. That's stupid.

1067. Just to go on to

  1068. this rough council

  1069. estate where you're

  1070. not getting a ton

  1071. of great things

  1072. back from these

  1073. people.

  1074. But if you

  1075. would actually go

  1076. and talk to them,

  1077. if you were going

  1078. to meet them,

  1079. you wouldn't find

  1080. bitter, angry,

  1081. resentful, regretful

  1082. people, you would

  1083. find this community

  1084. that radiates this

  1085. joy in Jesus.

  1086. You would find

  1087. these people who

  1088. would say, we've

  1089. walked through life

  1090. and we've seen

  1091. by our experience,

  1092. we've learned that

  1093. contentment is

  1094. found not in

  1095. having the one

  1096. as your partner,

  1097. not in finding

  1098. the greatest

  1099. career or anything

  1100. else.

  1101. It's found in

  1102. Jesus and being

  1103. with him on his

  1104. mission that people

  1105. might come to

  1106. praise him who

  1107. is the Lord of

  1108. all.

  1109. Because you see,

  1110. they're ordinary

  1111. messy people,

  1112. but their whole

  1113. lives are a

  1114. picture of

  1115. worship, that

  1116. Jesus is worth

  1117. it.

  1118. So is Jesus

  1119. enough for us?

  1120. God may not

  1121. call you, he

  1122. may call some

  1123. of us to that.

  1124. Right now, there

  1125. may be some

  1126. people that

  1127. actually that's

  1128. what God is

  1129. placing on your

  1130. heart right now.

  1131. a call for a

  1132. mission in a

  1133. way that you're

  1134. going to have to

  1135. sacrifice greatly.

  1136. Some of us, many

  1137. of us, that's not

  1138. going to be the

  1139. call in that kind

  1140. of way, but

  1141. actually the call

  1142. is always that we

  1143. would find our

  1144. contentment so much

  1145. in Christ that we

  1146. would be these

  1147. people who are

  1148. partnering with

  1149. overflowing,

  1150. generous,

  1151. humble,

  1152. sacrificial

  1153. worship to the

  1154. one seated on the

  1155. throne.

  1156. let me pray for

  1157. us.

  1158. Thank you,

  1159. Father, that you

  1160. say that my God

  1161. will supply all

  1162. our needs as we

  1163. walk with you,

  1164. all of our needs,

  1165. not just our

  1166. wants, but

  1167. everything we need

  1168. for true contentment.

  1169. According to your

  1170. riches, you are

  1171. abundantly wealthy.

  1172. Father, I pray that

  1173. we would not be

  1174. those who live with

  1175. a poverty mindset,

  1176. those who live with

  1177. an egret-like neediness,

  1178. codependency.

1179. Lord, I pray we would

1180. not be those who live

  1181. with a self-sufficiency,

  1182. but we'd see that

  1183. wherever we are

  1184. right now, you are

  1185. sufficient for us.

  1186. Give us that rest.

  1187. Give us that peace.

  1188. Even in the struggle,

  1189. even in the challenges,

  1190. we'd be of a

  1191. community that is

  1192. the most content

  1193. community in the

  1194. whole of Hong Kong,

  1195. I pray.

  1196. In Jesus' name.

  1197. Amen.
