  1. The scripture reading comes from the Gospel of John chapter 4, starting at verse 1.

    John 4 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in the screen or in your Bible.

  3. Now, when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John,

  4. although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples,

  5. he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.

  6. Then he had to pass through Samaria.

  7. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

  8. Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well.

  9. It was about the sixth hour.

  10. A woman from Samaria came to draw water.

  11. Jesus said to her,

  12. Give me a drink, for his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

  13. The Samaritan woman said to him,

  14. How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?

  15. For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  16. Jesus answered her,

  17. If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you,

  18. Give me a drink, you would have asked him,

  19. and he would have given you living water.

  20. The woman said to him,

  21. Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep.

  22. Where do you get the living water?

  23. Are you greater than our father Jacob?

  24. He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.

  25. Jesus said to her,

  26. Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,

  27. but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.

  28. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water,

  29. welling up to eternal life.

  30. The woman said to him,

  31. Sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.

  32. Jesus said to her,

  33. Go, call your husband and come here.

  34. The woman answered him,

  35. I have no husband.

  36. Jesus said to her,

  37. You are right in saying I have no husband,

  38. for you have had five husbands,

  39. and the one you now have is not your husband.

  40. What you have said is true.

  41. The woman said to him,

  42. Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

  43. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,

  44. but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.

  45. Jesus said to her,

  46. Woman, believe me,

  47. the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

  48. You worship what you do not know.

  49. We worship what we know,

  50. for salvation is from the Jews.

  51. But the hour is coming and is now here

  52. when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.

  53. For the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

  54. God is spirit,

  55. and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

  56. The woman said to him,

  57. I know that Messiah is coming,

  58. he who is called Christ.

  59. When he comes,

  60. he will tell us all things.

  61. Jesus said to her,

  62. I who speak to you am he.

  63. Just then his disciples came back.

  64. They marveled that he was talking with a woman,

  65. but no one said,

  66. What do you seek?

  67. Or,

  68. Why are you talking with her?

  69. So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,

  70. Come,

  71. see a man who told me all that I ever did.

  72. Can this be the Christ?

  73. Amen.

  74. Amen.

  75. Great.

  76. Good morning,

  77. everybody.

  78. And it's wonderful to be with you again this morning.

  79. Again,

  80. if you're new to Watermark and you don't know me,

  81. my name is Kevin.

  82. I'm one of the leaders,

  83. one of the pastors here.

  84. And it's wonderful to be able to be with you this morning.

  85. And to kick off our new series that we're starting called,

  86. Why Christianity?

  87. For the next couple of weeks,

  88. we're going to be exploring some of the questions and the difficulties that we have

  89. when we consider the claims of Jesus Christ in the Bible.

  90. And so we're so glad that you're joining us this morning.

  91. And we're looking forward to the next couple of weeks.

  92. Now this morning,

  93. we're looking at the question,

  94. Isn't Christianity exclusivist and therefore arrogant?

  95. Isn't Christianity exclusivist and arrogant?

  96. You may have heard the story.

  97. It's based on an old Hindu parable from many,

  98. many years ago that says there were four blind men walking through the jungle.

  99. They stumble across an elephant,

  100. a very tame elephant.

  101. And each one of them takes an aspect of the element and feels it,

  102. trying to work out what it is.

  103. And so the first blind man grabs hold of the trunk and he says,

  104. This thing is long and narrow and bendy.

  105. It feels a little bit like a snake.

  106. The second man grabs a tusk and says,

  107. No, no, no.

  108. This thing is hard.

  109. It narrows.

  110. It's got a point on the end.

  111. This thing feels like a spear.

  112. The third man grabs the ear and says,

  113. No, this is flat and wavy and it creates air movement like a fan.

  114. And the fourth man grabs the elephant's leg and says,

  115. No, no.

  116. This is hard.

  117. It's solid.

  118. It's sturdy.

  119. It feels like a tree trunk.

  120. And so the parable says,

  121. Well, they're all partly right,

  122. but they're all partly wrong.

  123. Wouldn't it be arrogant?

  124. Wouldn't it be exclusivistic for any one of them to say,

  125. I have the answer.

  126. I am right.

  127. I know what's going on here.

  128. Sometimes when we think of religion and faith,

  129. it can feel a little bit like that.

  130. When somebody says,

  131. I believe something to be true,

  132. we tend to think that all religions are fundamentally the same,

  133. superficially different.

  134. They're all heading in the same direction.

  135. And it's simply arrogant.

  136. It's exclusivistic for one person,

  137. one faith to say,

  138. We believe this is how things really are.

  139. This is the truth.

  140. Sometimes when we hear people talking like that,

  141. we can feel that those people have a sense of superiority about them,

  142. as if they're looking down on anybody who believes differently from them,

  143. and judges them with a sense of,

  144. I'm right.

  145. You're wrong.

  146. I know what's going on.

  147. You don't.

  148. I'm better than you.

  149. Isn't Christianity arrogant and exclusivist?

  150. This morning,

  151. what I want to put to us is that all people are of equal value and dignity and respect.

  152. All people have freedom of religion,

  153. freedom of worship,

  154. freedom to believe what they want.

  155. And yet not all beliefs or ideas are equally valid,

  156. because not all ideas are equally true.

  157. There's four things I want us to think about this morning as we think about this question.

  158. I want to think about the nature of truth,

  159. the challenge of truth,

  160. the promise of truth,

  161. and finally,

  162. the person of truth.

  163. So let's dive straight in.

  164. Firstly,

  165. the nature of truth.

  166. We're looking at this passage that Betty read to us this morning,

  167. this encounter in John's gospel in John chapter four.

  168. And in order to understand what's going on here,

  169. it helps to understand some of the backstory.

  170. Jesus encounters this lady at a watering well in Samaria.

  171. Now,

  172. this lady that Jesus encounters is a lady who carries a lot of shame in her life.

  173. And we know this for two reasons.

  174. The first reason is the scripture tells us she's been married,

  175. five times.

  176. And the man she's with at the moment is not actually her husband.

  177. And even in our modern day,

  178. that would be quite a story.

  179. But in ancient Israel,

  180. this was nothing less than scandalous.

  181. The village in which she lives isn't a big city.

  182. It's not a mega city.

  183. These are small villages.

  184. Everybody in the town knows that this lady has had five husbands.

  185. And everybody in the town knows that she's with somebody at the moment

  186. who's not really her husband.

  187. This was a cause for great gossip and scandal all throughout the town.

  188. But the other reason we know this is because the woman is coming to the well at midday.

  189. Nobody in the ancient world went to go collect water,

  190. heavy buckets of water in the heat of the day.

  191. In the middle of the day,

  192. temperatures could get to 45,

  193. 50 degrees Celsius.

  194. No one would go to the watering well then.

  195. Everyone would go in the earliest part of the day

  196. or late in the evening to avoid the heat of the day.

  197. Why does this lady come in the middle of the day?

  198. The reason is because she knows that nobody else will be there.

  199. She's going there because it's the one time of the day

  200. that she can get away from the scowls,

  201. the looks,

  202. the comments,

  203. the mocking thoughts,

  204. the jabs of the other woman in the town.

  205. All those who know her story

  206. and are judging her.

  207. And so she comes to the watering well

  208. in the middle of the day

  209. hoping to avoid everybody else

  210. for just a bit of peace and quiet.

  211. And yet she encounters Jesus.

  212. And as she encounters Jesus,

  213. Jesus makes this radical claim

  214. because Jesus makes the unashamedly

  215. strong claim

  216. that he's nothing less than the Messiah,

  217. God in human form.

  218. And yet as we're going to see,

  219. this is not bad news.

  220. This is good news.

  221. Let's look firstly at the nature of truth.

  222. Jesus, in his conversation with this lady,

  223. makes some pretty big claims about himself.

  224. They're at the watering well

  225. and Jesus says to her,

  226. everyone who drinks of this water

  227. will be thirsty again,

  228. but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him

  229. will never be thirsty again.

  230. The water that I give

  231. will become within him or her

  232. a spring of living water

  233. welling up to eternal life.

  234. What's Jesus saying?

  235. Well, he's making a pretty big

  236. and binary claim.

  237. He's saying,

  238. to find what your heart

  239. and your soul is looking for,

  240. you have to come to me.

  241. But if you reject me,

  242. you'll never find

  243. what you're looking for

  244. in the deepest part of you.

  245. Jesus is not saying

  246. that he is a path

  247. to meaning and satisfaction in life.

  248. All the things

  249. that that lady's been looking for

  250. and the five men that she's married

  251. and the man she's with now,

  252. all the affirmation

  253. and the acceptance

  254. and the approval

  255. and the love.

  256. Jesus says,

  257. I'm not just one path

  258. to all of those things.

  259. I'm the path.

  260. Either you come to me

  261. and find what your heart is looking for

  262. or you reject me

  263. and you never find

  264. what you're looking for.

  265. Again, Jesus says to her,

  266. he says,

  267. look, go and call your husband.

  268. And she says,

  269. well, I don't have a husband.

  270. And Jesus so graciously says,

  271. what you've said is true.

  272. You're right in saying

  273. I have no husband

  274. for you've had five

  275. and the man that you're with

  276. right now is not your husband.

  277. And then Jesus says

  278. this amazing thing.

  279. He says,

  280. what you've said

  281. is just,

  282. is true.

  283. Now that's an incredible thing to say

  284. because let's be honest,

  285. what she said

  286. was technically true

  287. but it wasn't really

  288. the whole truth, right?

  289. She's being,

  290. what some people have called

  291. is economical with the truth.

  292. She's saying something

  293. that's technically true

  294. but it's actually misleading.

  295. And rather than Jesus

  296. calling her out

  297. and saying,

  298. you liar,

  299. you're deceiving me,

  300. Jesus graciously

  301. challenges her

  302. with what is really true

  303. while not judging her

  304. or exposing her

  305. to more shame.

  306. The tenderness of Jesus

  307. is just amazing.

  308. And yet,

  309. Jesus doesn't brush over it.

  310. He confronts her

  311. with the reality.

  312. Why does Jesus do that?

  313. The reason is

  314. because Jesus

  315. doesn't want this lady

  316. or any of us

  317. to be confused

  318. about the absolute,

  319. even binary nature

  320. of truth claims.

  321. Jesus is unashamedly

  322. challenging

  323. the post-truth culture

  324. by saying

  325. that truth is real,

  326. it's knowable,

  327. it's absolute,

  328. and it corresponds

  329. to reality.

  330. Jesus claiming

  331. that what is true

  332. is by nature exclusive

  333. because what is

  334. is distinct

  335. from what isn't.

  336. What's true

  337. is distinct

  338. from what's false.

  339. And friends,

  340. I want to put it to us

  341. that we all actually

  342. know this.

  343. We all,

  344. in order to function

  345. in an ordered

  346. and logical world,

  347. we all need to believe

  348. in the objective reality,

  349. the nature of truth.

  350. Imagine,

  351. you're about to step

  352. out of your apartment

  353. and your housemate

  354. or your spouse

  355. says to you,

  356. oh,

  357. it's just started raining,

  358. you better take

  359. an umbrella with you.

  360. How many of us

  361. would feel

  362. that our housemate

  363. is being arrogant,

  364. exclusivistic,

  365. to impose upon us

  366. their version

  367. of the truth?

  368. How many of us

  369. would say,

  370. that may be true of you,

  371. but that's not true

  372. for me.

  373. Don't impose

  374. your worldview upon us.

  375. Now,

  376. you can say that,

  377. but if you don't

  378. want to get wet

  379. while walking in the rain,

  380. you have to conform

  381. to the reality

  382. that walking in the rain

  383. without an umbrella

  384. is going to render you wet.

  385. You see,

  386. truth is not a social construct.

  387. It's not something

  388. people came up with

  389. to control

  390. or manipulate people.

  391. Truth corresponds

  392. to reality.

  393. Here's another example.

  394. I know this is

  395. a little bit hypothetical,

  396. but just bear with me

  397. for a second.

  398. Just imagine for a second

  399. that the airports are open

  400. and that you're actually

  401. flying on an airplane

  402. to go on holiday.

  403. I know that hasn't happened

  404. for any of us

  405. for a very long time,

  406. but just imagine

  407. that the airports are open

  408. and you're flying somewhere.

  409. How many of us

  410. want to fly on an airplane

  411. when the co-pilot

  412. says to his pilot,

  413. look,

  414. in order to land safely,

  415. you need to drop your speed,

  416. tilt the wings,

  417. and drop your altitude.

  418. How many of us

  419. want a pilot that says,

  420. don't impose your truth on me?

  421. Don't be so arrogant

  422. as to tell me

  423. what is your version of truth?

  424. That may be true for you,

  425. but that's not true for me.

  426. None of us want that,

  427. right?

  428. In order to function

  429. in an ordered

  430. and a logical world,

  431. we all actually believe

  432. in the objective nature

  433. of truth.

  434. We believe that truth

  435. corresponds to reality.

  436. A few years ago,

  437. the atheist astrophysicist

  438. Neil deGrasse Tyson,

  439. a very famous astrophysicist

  440. in the US,

  441. said this.

  442. He said,

  443. the good thing about science

  444. is that it's true

  445. whether you believe in it

  446. or not.

  447. Well,

  448. that's absolutely true,

  449. right?

  450. Whether you believe

  451. in gravitational forces

  452. or the earth is round

  453. or not,

  454. doesn't really matter.

  455. Those things are real.

  456. That is reality.

  457. But if you think about it,

  458. that's not just true

  459. for science.

  460. That's the good news

  461. about all truth.

  462. Truth is truth,

  463. and it's real

  464. whether you believe in it

  465. or not.

  466. As Os Guinness said,

  467. truth is truth

  468. even if nobody believes in it

  469. and falsehood is false

  470. even if everybody

  471. believes in it.

  472. And what that means

  473. is that truth

  474. by nature

  475. is exclusive.

  476. It makes a claim

  477. about the world.

  478. It says,

  479. this is the way the world is.

  480. This is the way

  481. the world is not.

  482. It separates what's true

  483. from what's false,

  484. what's real

  485. from what isn't,

  486. what's dependable

  487. from what is faulty.

  488. And this is the case

  489. for all truth,

  490. not just religious truth.

  491. Anything that claims

  492. to be truth

  493. by nature

  494. is exclusive.

  495. And so when someone says,

  496. there's no such thing

  497. as absolute truth,

  498. all religions

  499. are just the same,

  500. well that is actually

  501. a truth claim.

  502. That's a propositional claim

  503. about the way

  504. the world is.

  505. That's saying that

  506. the world is this way,

  507. it's not this way.

  508. I believe the world

  509. is like this.

  510. That is a false view

  511. of religion

  512. and who God is.

  513. Even the belief

  514. that there's no such thing

  515. as objective,

  516. exclusive truth

  517. is an objective truth

  518. claim about the way

  519. that the world is.

  520. And so if you think

  521. about the story,

  522. the parable of the elephant,

  523. the only way,

  524. the only reason

  525. that it seems

  526. to make sense

  527. is because that story

  528. is told

  529. from the vantage point,

  530. the viewpoint

  531. of the narrator.

  532. Somebody who claims

  533. to have absolute

  534. perfect perspective

  535. on the world,

  536. somebody who says,

  537. let me tell you

  538. about how the world is.

  539. This is what

  540. the world is like.

  541. It's like four men

  542. that stumble across

  543. an elephant.

  544. The only way

  545. you can possibly claim

  546. that no religion

  547. can see the whole truth

  548. is if you yourself

  549. have superior,

  550. comprehensive knowledge

  551. about spiritual reality,

  552. the very knowledge

  553. that you've just claimed

  554. nobody really has.

  555. You see,

  556. all truth claims

  557. by nature

  558. are exclusive.

  559. They make a claim.

  560. This is the way

  561. the world is.

  562. Secondly,

  563. the challenge of truth.

  564. Now,

  565. why do we struggle

  566. with this nature of truth?

  567. Why do we struggle

  568. with the idea

  569. that this is the way

  570. the world is?

  571. And we push back

  572. and we like the idea

  573. of living in a post-truth culture.

  574. Part of the reason

  575. is because the character

  576. of truth

  577. is that it's confrontational.

  578. It's challenging.

  579. It challenges us

  580. to say,

  581. this is a reality.

  582. You need to align your life

  583. to reality.

  584. In other words,

  585. it calls us

  586. to surrender

  587. and submit

  588. to the reality

  589. of what the truth is.

  590. There's an old story.

  591. It's a bit of a folklore story.

  592. But there's an old story

  593. of a U.S. battleship

  594. sailing somewhere

  595. along the coast

  596. of Central America.

  597. And it's twilight.

  598. It's going into the evening.

  599. There's fog all around.

  600. The weather's very bad.

  601. Nobody can really see

  602. much around them.

  603. But up ahead,

  604. the battleship sees

  605. a light flashing

  606. in its direction

  607. and realizes

  608. there's a ship

  609. in its way.

  610. And so the captain

  611. says to his radio man,

  612. get on the radio

  613. and tell that ship

  614. to adjust their course

  615. by 20 degrees,

  616. otherwise we're going

  617. to collide.

  618. And so the radio man

  619. sends this message across

  620. and the message

  621. comes back saying,

  622. no,

  623. we're not adjusting.

  624. You change your course.

  625. The captain's

  626. a bit irritated.

  627. He says,

  628. listen,

  629. tell them

  630. they better change

  631. their course quickly,

  632. otherwise this is going

  633. to end up in a collision.

  634. The message comes back

  635. saying,

  636. we're not moving.

  637. You adjust your course.

  638. The captain grabs

  639. the radio

  640. and he says,

  641. listen,

  642. this is the captain

  643. of the U.S. destroyer.

  644. I command you now

  645. to immediately

  646. adjust your course.

  647. The message comes back

  648. saying,

  649. this is the keeper

  650. of the lighthouse.

  651. I suggest

  652. you adjust

  653. your course.

  654. It's a silly story,

  655. but it illustrates

  656. the point

  657. that reality

  658. and truth

  659. are confrontational.

  660. It challenges us.

  661. When we're confronted

  662. with the reality

  663. of truth,

  664. we can't just

  665. carry on

  666. as if life

  667. is arbitrary

  668. or has no reality.

  669. Truth confronts us

  670. and says,

  671. what are you going

  672. to do

  673. with the truth

  674. that you've just

  675. been told?

  676. In this exchange

  677. with the woman,

  678. after Jesus

  679. has revealed

  680. her situation

  681. with her various

  682. romantic partners,

  683. the woman replies

  684. and says,

  685. sir,

  686. I perceive

  687. that you're a prophet.

  688. And she changes

  689. the conversation

  690. to spiritual matters,

  691. things that she thinks

  692. are a little bit

  693. more ethereal.

  694. And she says to Jesus,

  695. look,

  696. our people say

  697. that you should

  698. worship on this mountain.

  699. Your people,

  700. the Jews,

  701. say that we should

  702. worship on this mountain.

  703. Who knows really

  704. what's right

  705. and what's true.

  706. I guess they both

  707. kind of work.

  708. And Jesus replies

  709. in effect

  710. and says,

  711. look,

  712. it doesn't matter

  713. where you worship

  714. or how you worship.

  715. What matters

  716. is the condition

  717. of your heart.

  718. What's Jesus saying?

  719. Jesus is saying,

  720. look,

  721. you can do it here,

  722. you can worship there,

  723. you worship in your home

  724. or a schoolyard

  725. or a cathedral.

  726. That's not what's important.

  727. What's important

  728. is that if you want

  729. to know God,

  730. if you want to know

  731. the truth,

  732. you've got to

  733. encounter God,

  734. you've got to be truthful,

  735. not fake.

  736. You've got to be surrendered.

  737. You've got to come

  738. to Him

  739. and let Him

  740. confront you

  741. with the reality

  742. of who He is.

  743. And then she says

  744. something very interesting.

  745. She says,

  746. well,

  747. I guess,

  748. who knows how

  749. these things work out.

  750. I hear the Messiah's coming.

  751. When He comes,

  752. He'll tell us reality.

  753. And Jesus says to her,

  754. lady,

  755. the man that speaks

  756. to you

  757. is He.

  758. I am

  759. the Messiah.

  760. Jesus is confronting her

  761. with the fact

  762. that He's not only

  763. someone who's bringing

  764. the truth,

  765. He claims to be

  766. the truth.

  767. And throughout the Gospels,

  768. Jesus is constantly saying

  769. these confrontational,

  770. these challenging things.

  771. Jesus is constantly

  772. challenging the people

  773. who are listening to Him

  774. to saying,

  775. this is a reality.

  776. What are you going

  777. to do about it?

  778. Jesus says things like,

  779. whoever holds on

  780. to His life

  781. will find that He loses it.

  782. But if you're willing

  783. to lay down your life

  784. for my sake

  785. in order to know me,

  786. you'll actually find life.

  787. Jesus says things like,

  788. nobody can come

  789. to the Father.

  790. Nobody can discover

  791. the reality of who God is

  792. unless you come to me.

  793. At one point,

  794. some people are debating,

  795. should they follow Jesus

  796. or should they stick

  797. with the family business?

  798. And they're oscillating

  799. a little bit

  800. between the two.

  801. And Jesus says,

  802. either you're in

  803. or you're out.

  804. You can't be in two camps.

  805. Either you believe

  806. I am who I say I am

  807. or you reject me,

  808. but you can't just

  809. admire me.

  810. You can't sit on the fence.

  811. Jesus is constantly

  812. making statements.

  813. Things like,

  814. I am the door

  815. to reality.

  816. I am the gate.

  817. I am living water.

  818. I am truth.

  819. And what He's saying is,

  820. you can't just admire Him.

  821. You can't just tolerate Him.

  822. Jesus doesn't allow us

  823. just to consider Himself

  824. a good moral man

  825. that had some wisdom.

  826. He lays down a claim,

  827. a binary claim,

  828. an exclusive claim.

  829. And He says,

  830. what are you going to do with it?

  831. How are you going to respond

  832. to my claim

  833. that I am the way to truth?

  834. Os Guinness said it like this.

  835. He said,

  836. there's two people in the world.

  837. Those who conform their lives

  838. to the truth

  839. or those who try

  840. and conform truth

  841. to their lives.

  842. And again,

  843. we actually know

  844. that this is self-evident.

  845. That when somebody says,

  846. this is the way the world is,

  847. this is reality,

  848. we either conform to it

  849. or reject it.

  850. But you can't sit on the fence.

  851. Imagine your doctor comes to you

  852. and he says,

  853. listen,

  854. you are in an unhealthy state

  855. unless you lose some weight,

  856. you start eating healthy

  857. and you take this medication,

  858. you're going to be dead

  859. in six months' time.

  860. Well,

  861. we can philosophize

  862. all we want

  863. about how arrogant that is,

  864. how exclusivist that is.

  865. But the reality is,

  866. if you want to live

  867. longer than six months,

  868. you have to conform,

  869. align your life

  870. to the truth

  871. of what the doctor said.

  872. You see, friends,

  873. in our post-truth culture,

  874. we may be tempted to say,

  875. well,

  876. why can't I pick and choose?

  877. I'll take a bit of Jesus,

  878. the Sermon on the Mount

  879. that's about turning

  880. the other cheek

  881. and forgiving your enemies.

  882. I'll take a bit

  883. of Eastern meditation.

  884. I'll blend my own fusion

  885. of what I believe

  886. is to be true.

  887. But friends,

  888. when we do that,

  889. we form a God

  890. in our own image.

  891. We make a God

  892. who looks just like us,

  893. a God who never challenges us,

  894. but ultimately,

  895. we make up a God

  896. that doesn't have

  897. any connection

  898. to reality.

  899. The challenge of truth

  900. is that it calls us

  901. to submit,

  902. to surrender.

  903. Now,

  904. why is this so important?

  905. Well,

  906. thirdly,

  907. because the promise

  908. of truth.

  909. You see,

  910. the stakes

  911. couldn't be higher.

  912. Truth promises

  913. nothing less

  914. than freedom.

  915. In the mid-20th century,

  916. philosophers

  917. like Michel Foucault

  918. and others

  919. came up with the idea

  920. that truth

  921. and reality

  922. is relative.

  923. It's not really

  924. a real thing.

  925. Michel Foucault

  926. taught that

  927. truth and reality

  928. is a social construct,

  929. something that

  930. those in power

  931. have created

  932. in order to

  933. oppress

  934. the powerless.

  935. And so,

  936. Foucault and others

  937. were saying that

  938. when somebody,

  939. especially those in power,

  940. claim that something

  941. is right

  942. or something is true

  943. or use things

  944. like divine decree,

  945. God has said so,

  946. actually,

  947. that's a social construct

  948. to manipulate

  949. or control

  950. those that

  951. oppose them

  952. or their opponents.

  953. The great example

  954. of this,

  955. of course,

  956. is the Crusades

  957. in the Middle Ages,

  958. right,

  959. where the church

  960. was saying,

  961. we need to impose

  962. the reality of Christianity

  963. on the rest of the world.

  964. And they went

  965. in their army

  966. and try to

  967. oppose and oppress

  968. their opponents.

  969. Remember the famous saying,

  970. religion is the opium

  971. of the masses.

  972. It's used to

  973. oppress and suppress,

  974. manipulate and control

  975. people.

  976. And of course,

  977. one of the great examples

  978. of this is Nazi Germany.

  979. Hitler claimed that

  980. Jews and homosexuals

  981. and gypsies

  982. were the scourge

  983. of Germany.

  984. They were the problem

  985. of everything.

  986. They were the source

  987. of all Germany's problems.

  988. And for Germany

  989. to really be

  990. the nation

  991. it was meant to be,

  992. we need to get rid

  993. of the scourge

  994. of Germany.

  995. Hitler propagated

  996. this truth

  997. that these people

  998. were stealing

  999. the jobs

  1000. of hard-working

  1001. German nationals

  1002. and we need to

  1003. eradicate

  1004. such people

  1005. from our nation

1006. so that we can be

  1007. a pure

  1008. and a wholesome

  1009. country again.

  1010. Michel Foucault

  1011. said,

  1012. people like Hitler,

  1013. people like the Crusaders,

  1014. were constructing

  1015. truth.

  1016. Truth isn't really real.

1017. It was a social construct

  1018. to impose their will

  1019. upon others

  1020. to control

  1021. and manipulate them.

1022. But is this really true?

  1023. As we discover,

  1024. the problem

  1025. is not actually truth.

  1026. The problem

  1027. is the contortion

  1028. of truth

  1029. or the manipulation

  1030. of truth.

  1031. In fact,

  1032. the greatest problem

  1033. is half-truths.

  1034. Any authoritarian regime

  1035. or dictator

  1036. has found

  1037. that truth

  1038. is so powerful

  1039. that if you can

  1040. take something

  1041. and dress it up

  1042. as truth,

  1043. if you can make

  1044. something look

  1045. like truth,

  1046. it's a powerful weapon

  1047. that you can use

  1048. to control others.

  1049. But the problem

  1050. isn't actually

  1051. the nature

  1052. of truth itself.

  1053. It's the contortion

  1054. and the distortion

  1055. of truth.

  1056. One of Hitler's

  1057. great ministers

  1058. in parliament

  1059. was a man

  1060. by the name

  1061. of Joseph Goebbels

  1062. and he was

  1063. the minister

  1064. of propaganda.

  1065. Joseph Goebbels

  1066. said this.

  1067. He said,

  1068. if you tell

  1069. a lie

  1070. big enough

  1071. and you keep

  1072. repeating it,

  1073. people will eventually

  1074. come to believe it.

  1075. Now just pause there

  1076. for a second.

1077. What does that sound like?

  1078. That sounds like

  1079. fake news, right?

1080. If you can come up

  1081. with a lie

  1082. big enough

  1083. and keep repeating it,

  1084. people will eventually

  1085. come to believe it.

  1086. It thus becomes

  1087. vitally important

  1088. for the Nazi state

  1089. to use all

  1090. of its powers

  1091. to repress

  1092. dissent

  1093. and the truth.

  1094. For truth

  1095. is the mortal

  1096. enemy

  1097. of the lie

  1098. and thus

  1099. by extension

  1100. is the greatest

  1101. enemy

  1102. of our state.

  1103. You see what Goebbels

  1104. is saying?

  1105. He's saying

  1106. the problem is

  1107. we've come up

  1108. with a version

  1109. of truth,

  1110. a half truth.

  1111. We've come up

  1112. with a hypothesis

  1113. and we better

  1114. not let anybody

  1115. find out

  1116. what the truth is.

  1117. There's a

  1118. fascinating documentary

  1119. on Netflix

  1120. at the moment

  1121. called

  1122. The Social Dilemma.

  1123. I'm not sure

  1124. if you've seen it.

  1125. In this documentary,

  1126. the creators

  1127. interview a whole

  1128. bunch of

  1129. previous VPs,

  1130. presidents,

  1131. top executives

  1132. of a bunch

  1133. of social media

  1134. companies

  1135. from Silicon Valley.

  1136. They're talking

  1137. about the challenge

  1138. that the social

  1139. media age

  1140. that we live in

  1141. presents

  1142. and particularly

  1143. the challenge

  1144. of the smartphone

  1145. and what this

  1146. is doing

  1147. for our civilization.

  1148. One of the

  1149. people that they

  1150. interview is a man

  1151. by the name

  1152. of Tristan Harris,

  1153. a former executive

  1154. at Google.

  1155. Listen to what

  1156. Tristan Harris says.

  1157. He says,

  1158. if we don't agree

  1159. on what is true

  1160. or that there is

  1161. such a thing

  1162. as truth,

  1163. then we are toast.

  1164. This is the problem

  1165. beneath all other

  1166. problems because

  1167. if we can't agree

  1168. on what is true,

  1169. we can't navigate

  1170. out of any

  1171. of our problems.

  1172. Do you see

  1173. what he's saying?

  1174. He's saying

  1175. the problem

  1176. of fake news

  1177. in our age

  1178. is rampant

  1179. and actually

  1180. what's at stake

  1181. is nothing less

  1182. than the freedom

  1183. of our civilization.

  1184. The answer

  1185. is not to suppress

  1186. truth.

  1187. The answer

  1188. is not to deny

  1189. truth.

  1190. It's to come

  1191. to a comprehensive

  1192. understanding

  1193. that this is truth

  1194. and unless we can

  1195. agree on that,

  1196. we are toast.

  1197. We are finished.

  1198. Friends,

  1199. the ramifications

  1200. of truth

  1201. are so vitally

  1202. important because

  1203. what's at stake

  1204. is nothing less

  1205. than freedom,

  1206. both for individuals

  1207. and nations

  1208. and entire civilizations

  1209. because even though

  1210. truth demands

  1211. your submission,

  1212. your alignment,

  1213. even though it claims

  1214. certain things

  1215. are always true

  1216. and certain things

  1217. are always false,

  1218. when we align ourselves

  1219. to what's truth,

  1220. the result is always

  1221. freedom and liberty.

  1222. And it's not only

  1223. true socially

  1224. or nationally,

  1225. it's equally true

  1226. personally and individually.

  1227. I'm not sure

  1228. how many of us

  1229. have ever been

  1230. in this situation

  1231. where maybe

  1232. you know something

  1233. or you've been

  1234. sworn to secrecy

  1235. something that

  1236. you cannot tell

  1237. or maybe

  1238. you've done

  1239. something that

  1240. you're so ashamed

  1241. of,

  1242. embarrassed about

  1243. and you swear

  1244. that you're going

1245. to go to your grave

  1246. and nobody's going

1247. to find out about it.

  1248. Friends,

  1249. how are you ever

  1250. going to be free

  1251. from the burden

  1252. and the weight

  1253. of such responsibility?

  1254. The only way

1255. is to speak the truth

  1256. because truth

  1257. leads to freedom.

  1258. That's why

  1259. anyone who's engaged

  1260. in Alcoholics Anonymous

  1261. program

  1262. or another 12-step

  1263. program knows

  1264. that the very

  1265. first step

  1266. is to acknowledge

  1267. reality

  1268. because the denial

  1269. of reality

  1270. never leads

  1271. to freedom.

1272. In order to be free

  1273. you have to face

  1274. the reality

  1275. that is before you.

  1276. The ancient Hebrews

  1277. had a proverb

  1278. that said this,

  1279. buy the truth

1280. and do not sell it.

  1281. It's so simple

  1282. but it's so profound.

  1283. Whatever it costs you,

  1284. whatever the cost

  1285. involved,

  1286. buy the truth,

  1287. obtain the truth

  1288. and no matter

  1289. what it costs you,

  1290. never ever sell it.

1291. Never give up on truth

  1292. because to give up

  1293. on truth

  1294. will always cost you

  1295. more

  1296. than holding on

  1297. to truth.

  1298. Truth is costly,

  1299. it's true

  1300. but it's liberating

  1301. and it's free.

  1302. And Jesus

  1303. in one of his

  1304. most famous teachings

  1305. says this,

  1306. if you listen

  1307. to my teachings

  1308. you'll be free.

  1309. You will discover

  1310. the truth

  1311. and the truth

  1312. will set you free.

  1313. Earlier this year

  1314. I was listening

  1315. to the story

  1316. of a man

  1317. by the name

  1318. of Michael Ramston

  1319. and he was telling

  1320. the story

  1321. of how he became

  1322. a follower of Jesus.

1323. He said he grew up

  1324. in a family

  1325. that wasn't religious

  1326. at all.

1327. He grew up in Lebanon

  1328. and as a teenager

  1329. he had big questions

  1330. about life

  1331. and faith

  1332. and meaning

  1333. and purpose

  1334. and what is true

  1335. and in Lebanon

  1336. he discovers

  1337. this old missionary

  1338. and he starts asking

  1339. this missionary questions,

  1340. big questions

  1341. about life

  1342. and eventually

  1343. some of his brother

  1344. and his friends

  1345. they join this bit

  1346. of a group

  1347. and they hang out

  1348. with this missionary

  1349. asking him

  1350. these questions

  1351. of life

  1352. and this missionary

  1353. one day says

  1354. listen,

  1355. let's arrange

  1356. a weekend away

1357. and you can ask me

  1358. all the questions

  1359. that you want

  1360. and we can debate

  1361. and talk about

  1362. the nature of truth.

  1363. So they go away

  1364. for the weekend

1365. and on the Friday night

  1366. Michael Ramston

  1367. realizes that the claims

  1368. of Jesus are true

  1369. but for him

  1370. that's a problem

  1371. he didn't want

  1372. them to be true.

1373. Listen to what he says.

  1374. He says,

1375. I've come to the realization

  1376. that Christianity

  1377. was true

  1378. but I didn't want

  1379. it to be true

  1380. because I thought

  1381. it would make

  1382. my life miserable.

  1383. I was debating

  1384. how long

  1385. can I hold off

  1386. making this decision

  1387. because I thought

  1388. that becoming

  1389. a Christian

  1390. would be the end

  1391. of my happiness.

1392. So on the Saturday morning

  1393. he wakes up early

  1394. he's wrestling

  1395. with the decision.

  1396. He knows it's true

  1397. but he doesn't want

  1398. to follow Jesus

  1399. because he thinks

  1400. it'll be the end

  1401. of his happiness.

  1402. He goes up

  1403. onto a mountainside

  1404. and he smokes

  1405. 40 cigarettes.

  1406. Chain smokes

  1407. two packs of cigarettes

  1408. wrestling with this decision.

  1409. He eventually comes down

1410. and he gets his brother

1411. and his best friends together

  1412. and he says,

  1413. guys,

1414. I've got some bad news.

  1415. I've decided

  1416. tonight's the night

  1417. I'm going to become

  1418. a Christian.

1419. And this is what he says,

  1420. tonight I'm going

  1421. to sacrifice

  1422. my happiness

  1423. on the altar

  1424. of truth.

  1425. Do you see

  1426. what he's saying?

  1427. He's saying

  1428. I've discovered

  1429. the truth

  1430. and it's demanding

  1431. that I align

  1432. my life to it.

1433. Even if it costs me

  1434. my happiness,

  1435. my freedom,

  1436. my joy,

1437. I've come to the realization

  1438. I have to sacrifice

  1439. my happiness

  1440. on the altar

  1441. of truth.

  1442. Except that's not

  1443. how it turned out.

  1444. This is how

  1445. he finishes the story.

  1446. When I eventually

  1447. became a Christian,

  1448. the thing that totally

  1449. surprised me

  1450. was that I didn't

  1451. sink into some kind

  1452. of depression

  1453. as I had expected.

  1454. But unexpectedly,

  1455. I actually discovered

  1456. this inexplicable joy.

  1457. I got the opposite

  1458. of what I thought

  1459. was coming my way

  1460. as a result

  1461. of coming

  1462. to Jesus.

  1463. He thought

  1464. that he was going

  1465. to sacrifice

  1466. his happiness

  1467. and his freedom

  1468. and his joy

  1469. as he aligned

  1470. himself to truth.

  1471. But what he found

  1472. was the opposite.

1473. That coming to the truth

  1474. actually gave him

  1475. freedom.

  1476. It gave him joy.

  1477. It gave him

  1478. a happiness

  1479. he never expected

  1480. and had never

  1481. anticipated

  1482. in his life.

  1483. And that leads us

  1484. to the fourth point

  1485. which is the person

  1486. of truth.

  1487. The person of truth

  1488. is Jesus Christ.

  1489. You see,

  1490. we said earlier

  1491. that every worldview,

  1492. every claim

  1493. is binary.

  1494. It claims

  1495. that some things

  1496. are true

  1497. and some things

  1498. are not.

  1499. Even the objective

  1500. worldview that says

  1501. there's no such thing

  1502. as truth

  1503. is a truth claim

  1504. in and of itself.

  1505. But Christianity

  1506. is distinctive

  1507. in this way.

  1508. Every worldview

  1509. whether atheistic

  1510. or theistic

  1511. every worldview

  1512. says this is truth.

  1513. Here is the truth.

  1514. Jesus Christ

  1515. comes along

  1516. and says

  1517. I am truth.

  1518. I am truth.

  1519. I am the way.

  1520. I am life.

  1521. Everything we've

  1522. spoken about

  1523. this morning

  1524. comes to final

  1525. fulfillment in Jesus.

  1526. We spoke about

  1527. the nature of truth

  1528. that it's binary.

  1529. It claims

  1530. that certain things

  1531. are true

  1532. certain things are not.

  1533. Jesus comes along

  1534. and he doesn't say

  1535. I am a version of truth

1536. or a part to truth.

  1537. He says

1538. I'm the part to truth.

  1539. Either you accept me

  1540. or you reject me

  1541. but you can't sit

  1542. on the fence.

  1543. We spoke about

  1544. the challenge of truth.

  1545. It confronts us.

  1546. It calls us

  1547. to align ourselves

  1548. with reality.

  1549. Jesus comes and says

  1550. either you reject me

  1551. or you accept me

  1552. but you can't

  1553. just tolerate me.

1554. You can't just admire me.

  1555. If you're going

  1556. to follow me

  1557. your whole life

1558. has to come into alignment

1559. and you have to surrender

1560. and give your whole life

  1561. to me.

  1562. I demand wholehearted devotion.

  1563. We spoke about

  1564. the promise of truth

  1565. liberty and freedom.

  1566. Jesus comes along

  1567. and says

  1568. if anyone listens

  1569. to my teaching

1570. they will know the truth

  1571. and the truth

  1572. will set them free

  1573. because I am truth.

  1574. But there's more

  1575. to Jesus

  1576. than just his claim

  1577. to being true.

  1578. You see

  1579. just because Jesus

  1580. claims to be truth

  1581. and exclusivist

  1582. how does that

  1583. stop Christians

  1584. from being judgmental

  1585. and arrogant?

  1586. Tim Keller

  1587. helps us here.

1588. Listen to what he says.

  1589. He says

  1590. you cannot avoid

  1591. truth claims

  1592. and binaries.

  1593. The real issue

  1594. is which kinds

  1595. of truth claims

  1596. lead you to embrace

  1597. people who are

  1598. different from you

  1599. even those who

  1600. believe differently.

  1601. Which truth claims

  1602. lead to community?

  1603. Which truth claims

  1604. both humble

  1605. and affirm you

  1606. so that you aren't

  1607. afraid of people

1608. who are different from you

  1609. nor do you despise

  1610. and judge them.

  1611. You see what

  1612. Tim Keller is saying?

  1613. He's saying

  1614. how do we find

  1615. a truth claim

  1616. that contrary

  1617. to contemporary culture

  1618. it doesn't just say

  1619. well everything's true.

  1620. It actually believes

  1621. this is true.

1622. But how do we find

  1623. a truth claim?

  1624. Where do we find

  1625. a truth claim

  1626. that contrary

  1627. to traditional religion

  1628. isn't judgmental

  1629. and arrogant

  1630. towards those

  1631. that are different

  1632. from them?

  1633. That can even

  1634. be gracious

  1635. and welcoming

  1636. and loving

  1637. towards people

  1638. who even believe

  1639. differently?

  1640. Where are we going

  1641. to find such

  1642. a truth claim?

  1643. Friends the answer

  1644. is the gospel.

  1645. The gospel.

  1646. I don't know

  1647. if you picked up

  1648. in the story

  1649. in John chapter 4

    John 4 chapter mention

  1650. that Betty read

  1651. to us earlier.

  1652. This lady

  1653. experiences

  1654. the truth claim

  1655. of Jesus

  1656. and yet doesn't

  1657. experience

  1658. judgmentalism.

  1659. She starts off

  1660. coming to the well

1661. at the middle of day

  1662. to avoid the other

  1663. people in the village

  1664. because she's tired

  1665. of their judgmental

  1666. attitudes.

1667. And yet at the end

  1668. of the story

  1669. after discovering

  1670. Jesus

  1671. she puts down

  1672. her jars of water

  1673. she runs

  1674. into the village

  1675. and she tells

  1676. everybody

  1677. come to me

  1678. listen to me

  1679. I've just met

  1680. the man

  1681. who told me

  1682. everything about

  1683. my life.

  1684. For her whole life

  1685. she's tried to hide

1686. the story of her life.

  1687. She's tried to

  1688. cover up her shame.

  1689. She's tried to

  1690. let people

  1691. not find out

  1692. what's going on

  1693. her life

  1694. because she's

  1695. tired of the

  1696. judgmentalism.

  1697. She discovers

  1698. Jesus and she

  1699. says everybody

  1700. I've just met

  1701. a man

  1702. who knows

  1703. everything about

  1704. me and told

  1705. me my whole

  1706. life

  1707. you've got to

  1708. come and

  1709. discover him.

  1710. Why?

  1711. Because though

  1712. she discovered

  1713. the truth of

  1714. Jesus

  1715. she didn't

  1716. encounter

  1717. his

  1718. judgmentalism

  1719. she discovered

  1720. his grace.

  1721. Friends

  1722. in typical

  1723. religion

  1724. says that

  1725. you're accepted

  1726. and you're

  1727. affirmed

  1728. you're in

  1729. because of

  1730. what you do

  1731. because you've

  1732. met the grade

  1733. you've obeyed

  1734. the teachings

  1735. you've fulfilled

  1736. the commandments

  1737. you've done

  1738. everything that's

  1739. required of you

  1740. you've observed

  1741. the rules

  1742. but in the gospel

  1743. Jesus says

  1744. you can be

  1745. accepted

  1746. you can be

  1747. affirmed

  1748. you can be

  1749. welcomed into

  1750. his family

  1751. not because of

  1752. what you've

  1753. done

  1754. but because of

  1755. what he's

  1756. done

  1757. because he

  1758. died on the

  1759. cross to

  1760. take our

  1761. sin

  1762. and our

  1763. judgment

  1764. and our

  1765. shame

  1766. upon himself

  1767. friends

  1768. Jesus died

  1769. on the cross

  1770. to welcome

  1771. those in

  1772. who were once

  1773. on the outside

  1774. and that means

  1775. that there's no

  1776. room for arrogance

  1777. there's no room

  1778. for judgmentalism

  1779. Christians certainly

  1780. don't always get

  1781. this right

  1782. and if you've

  1783. ever been judged

  1784. by Christians

  1785. I am so sorry

  1786. but friends

  1787. the more truly

  1788. we get the gospel

  1789. the more we

  1790. understand the

  1791. nature of the

  1792. gospel

  1793. that the only

  1794. thing that I

  1795. contribute to

  1796. my salvation

  1797. is my sin

  1798. and my shame

  1799. that the reason

  1800. I'm included

  1801. is because of

  1802. Jesus grace

  1803. and his mercy

  1804. and his forgiveness

  1805. there's no ways

  1806. I can be arrogant

  1807. there's no ways

  1808. I can be judgmental

  1809. there's no ways

  1810. I can look at

  1811. those of other

  1812. religions and

  1813. look down my

  1814. nose at them

  1815. and think I'm

  1816. better than you

  1817. because when I

  1818. look at the gospel

  1819. it tells me that

  1820. I'm a sinner

  1821. I'm broken

  1822. that I'm in deep

  1823. trouble

  1824. that I need a

  1825. savior

  1826. that it's only the

  1827. mercy and the

  1828. forgiveness of

  1829. Jesus

  1830. that welcomes

  1831. me in

  1832. friends the gospel

  1833. tells me that I'm

  1834. incredibly loved and

  1835. accepted by God

  1836. not because of my

  1837. pedigree

  1838. not because of my

  1839. culture

  1840. not because of my

  1841. moral performance

  1842. but because Jesus

  1843. went to the cross

  1844. for me

  1845. but the second

  1846. thing is this

  1847. the gospel tells us

  1848. that rather than

  1849. being exclusive

  1850. Jesus is the most

  1851. inclusive man

  1852. that ever lived

  1853. in the previous

  1854. chapter to John

    John 4 chapter mention

  1855. chapter 4

  1856. and John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  1857. Jesus meets

  1858. another truth

  1859. seeker

  1860. a man by the

  1861. name of

  1862. Nicodemus

  1863. and Nicodemus

  1864. comes to Jesus

  1865. by the cover of

  1866. night in darkness

1867. and at the end of

  1868. that exchange

  1869. Jesus says one of

  1870. the most famous

  1871. words in the

  1872. entire world

  1873. he says

  1874. for God so loved

  1875. the world

  1876. that he gave his

  1877. only son

  1878. that whoever

  1879. would believe in

  1880. him will not

  1881. perish

  1882. but experience

  1883. eternal life

  1884. friends

  1885. look at what

  1886. it says

  1887. it says

  1888. who will get

  1889. to experience

  1890. eternal life

  1891. who is welcomed

  1892. by Jesus

  1893. it's whoever

  1894. whoever

  1895. whoever will

  1896. simply come to

  1897. him

  1898. friends it doesn't

  1899. matter what your

  1900. background is

  1901. what your culture

  1902. is what your

  1903. ethnicity is

  1904. it doesn't matter

  1905. what your race is

  1906. it doesn't matter

  1907. what family you

  1908. were born into

  1909. it doesn't matter

  1910. the size of your

  2017. no reason to look

  2018. down at others

  2019. to be arrogant or
