  1. Now, we have two New Testament readings at the moment. The first is from 2 Timothy.

  2. 2 Timothy chapter 3 from verse 14 into chapter 4 and verse 5.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  3. So 2 Timothy 3 verse 14 to chapter 4 verse 5.

    2 Timothy 3:14

  4. But as for you, Paul writes to Timothy,

  5. They will gather round them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

  6. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

  7. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist,

  8. discharge all the duties of your ministry.

  9. So the place of preaching and teaching God's Word is being emphasized there.

  10. And now we're going to read from Acts chapter 10.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  11. So we're about to begin a series, Healthy Habits for a Church or Habits of a Healthy Church.

  12. And the first thing that we're going to think about is preaching and teaching of God's Word and commitment to that.

  13. And so in Acts chapter 10, we have one of the many examples of preaching of Jesus that we find in the book of Acts.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  14. So Acts chapter 10 from verse 34 to verse 43.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  15. Then Peter began to speak.

  16. This is in Cornelius' house.

  17. I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism,

  18. but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.

  19. You know the message God sent to the people of Israel,

  20. announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.

  21. You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea,

  22. beginning in Galilee, after the baptism that John preached,

  23. how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power,

  24. and how he went around doing good and healing all who are under the power of the devil,

  25. because God was with him.

  26. We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem.

  27. They killed him by hanging him on a cross.

  28. But God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.

  29. He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen,

  30. by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

  31. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify

  32. that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.

  33. All the prophets testify about him,

  34. that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

  35. And we'll return to that passage in just a few moments.

  36. But before we do that, we're going to sing together the hymn,

  37. Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor.

  38. So we'll hear that and we can sing and we'll stand while we sing.

  39. Thank you.

  40. Thank you.

  41. Thank you.

  42. Thank you.

  43. Thank you.

  44. Thank you.

  45. Thank you.

  46. Thank you.

  47. Thank you.

  48. The first why question for us.

  49. Why is it that we regularly, week by week, spend one hour between the morning and the evening listening to the Bible being read and preached?

  50. Why is it that we devote time through the week to reading and teaching in small groups in different contexts regularly, week by week, month by month?

  51. It's an important question because preaching is under pressure.

  52. It's under pressure in part because of the media age.

  53. It was that drive to find more effective forms of communication.

  54. People are consuming and being discipled by different sources of information in ways like no other.

  55. And so even within the church, you'll find many people asking, is preaching still relevant?

  56. Perhaps because of that, there is even among preachers a loss of confidence.

  57. Perhaps we've heard one time too many, it's not how people learn best.

  58. Preaching won't attract people in.

  59. Asking people to listen to two sermons is simply too much.

  60. And so we have choices.

  61. Churches have choices to make.

  62. Do we cave in to that pressure?

  63. Do we try and conform?

  64. Change the way that we communicate?

  65. Or do we commit ourselves for the long haul to preaching and teaching?

  66. So our big goal today is to show, in the first instance, the central place that preaching and teaching had in the church from the beginning, by God's design.

  67. So that hopefully we ourselves and we as a church will grow in our conviction about the importance of preaching.

  68. But also at the same time, as we look at Acts chapter 10, we see an example of gospel preaching.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  69. That we might learn some of the priorities, the emphases of the apostles and others for ourselves.

  70. As we look to communicate the good news of Jesus with people around us.

  71. So think of it, in a sense, like visiting the doctor for a health checkup.

  72. If you ever find yourself doing that, when you do the BMI, you do the blood pressure, you check your heart.

  73. This is the first part of our church spiritual health check.

  74. Now, are we committed to hear God's word through preaching and teaching?

  75. And this deliberately comes first, because if we get this wrong, eventually everything else will go wrong.

  76. As I hope we will all be able to see.

  77. So let's begin simply by recognizing the place of preaching and teaching in the book of Acts.

  78. There's one verse to get us going.

  79. Acts chapter 8 and verse 4.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  80. If you don't have a Bible, I can read it for you.

  81. So this is the church is facing persecution.

  82. They're scattered.

  83. And in 8 verse 4, those who've been scattered preached the word wherever they went.

  84. So preaching is everywhere.

  85. And remember, Jesus said to the disciples, you will be my witnesses and you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.

  86. And so they are empowered by the Holy Spirit to continue the work of Jesus through preaching and teaching.

  87. Just to give a sense, in case we miss it, about how ever-present preaching is.

    Isaiah 2 chapter mention

  88. Chapter 2, as Pentecost.

  89. That's when the Holy Spirit comes on the disciples in power.

  90. And the first thing that happens, Peter begins to preach.

  91. Preaches to that huge crowd.

  92. 3,000 are converted.

  93. And we find that this first church are devoted to the apostles' teaching.

  94. So from the beginning, a church devoted to the word of God.

  95. Then in chapters 3 to 5, we find the churches preaching, but preaching largely because of opposition.

  96. They find themselves communicating the gospel before the Sanhedrin, who keep asking them questions and saying,

  97. Will you please stop talking about Jesus?

  98. And they refuse to stop.

  99. So they preach in the context of opposition.

  100. That grows.

  101. So chapter 7, chapter 8, there is preaching in the context of persecution.

  102. We have Stephen's sermon.

  103. And he eventually is martyred at the end of that.

  104. And you find Philip preaching to the Ethiopian.

  105. And it's interesting as well.

  106. So the apostles have been preaching.

  107. But there, chapters 7 and 8, there's deacons in the church who are preaching.

  108. And then we discover, as the church is scattered, everyday believers are preaching wherever they go as well.

  109. And then in chapter 9, one of the crucial turning points in the book of Acts, Saul is converted.

  110. We know him as Paul.

  111. As he is converted, what does he do?

  112. Begins preaching.

  113. Chapters 10 and 11, and this is our context,

  114. we find Peter preaching to the Gentiles.

  115. So here, just as Jesus said, you'll be my witnesses,

  116. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, to the ends of the earth.

  117. We see it begin here.

  118. And then chapters 13 to 21, we have Paul's three missionary journeys recorded.

  119. And we find churches established through the preaching and teaching of God's Word.

  120. So for those first 20 or so chapters,

  121. you can hardly move, but there's preaching happening.

  122. The church began, the church flourished,

  123. as they committed themselves to preaching and teaching the Word of God about Jesus.

  124. And they do it in different settings as well.

  125. That's one of the really interesting things about the book of Acts.

  126. So they'll preach in synagogues,

  127. lecture halls in the public square.

  128. They will preach and teach in houses.

  129. We find Philip in the middle of the desert.

  130. They're preaching in a chariot, teaching the Word of God.

  131. We find them preaching to different audiences.

  132. So sometimes that's to believers in homes.

  133. Often that's before very hostile crowds.

  134. Sometimes that's teaching that happens one to one.

  135. As we've said, it's done by different people.

  136. It's often by the apostles,

  137. but also these deacons,

  138. and also unnamed believers.

  139. The church from bottom to top believed that their message,

  140. their responsibility was to preach the gospel.

  141. And so, you know,

  142. as historians and church historians recognize

  143. the way that the Christian church

  144. ultimately transformed the Roman Empire,

  145. how does it turn the world upside down?

  146. It does it because they are totally committed

  147. to preaching and teaching the Word of God

  148. and living in response to it.

  149. And so it's really important for us to see.

  150. And it's amazing for us to think about how God worked.

  151. And I think it's important for us to be encouraged.

  152. So it was recognized by the Sanhedrin,

  153. in Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  154. that the people who are preaching are largely untrained.

  155. And that's very striking in its day.

  156. And bear in mind, too,

  157. that these first apostles,

  158. these first teachers of the gospel,

  159. they only had the Old Testament,

  160. and they wouldn't have had their own personal copies of it.

  161. And they also had the apostles teaching about Jesus.

  162. Bear in mind their context.

  163. They are working in the Roman Empire.

  164. We see how totally un-Christian and anti-Christian

  165. much of society was,

  166. whether that's Jewish leaders or the Roman establishment.

  167. They are working, operating in a context

  168. where Caesar is Lord is what you hear every day.

  169. It's a culture that was wild.

  170. A time of intense persecution.

  171. But,

  172. these first Christians,

  173. they had the Spirit,

  174. and they had the Word of God,

  175. and they had the life-changing message of Jesus.

  176. I love the way the guys in the Sanhedrin

  177. recognize

  178. the distinctive quality of Peter and John,

  179. that although they were largely unschooled,

  180. they were men who had been with Jesus.

  181. Something about their life and their message.

  182. Jesus spoke about that mustard seed

  183. that would grow into a huge tree.

  184. That's what we see happening

  185. in the book of Acts,

  186. as God's people are committed to God's Word,

  187. and that tree continues to grow today,

  188. wherever God's people are committed

  189. to preaching and teaching God's Word.

  190. And so, for our own encouragement,

  191. it's good for us to remember,

  192. we have the same Spirit

  193. that these first Christians had.

  194. We have the same good news.

  195. We have the same Lord Jesus.

  196. We have the same God

  197. who loves to save sinners.

  198. And so, in a day where we can feel weak

  199. and marginalized,

  200. where we wonder,

  201. does preaching, teaching, proclamation

  202. make any difference?

  203. We're invited always to take heart

  204. and to keep on going.

  205. From an overview,

  206. let's move directly to Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  207. and to think about preaching Christ

  208. in the book of Acts.

  209. There was lots of places,

  210. lots of places we could go,

  211. for examples of preaching

  212. in the book of Acts.

  213. And as you compare,

  214. it's very interesting

  215. to compare the different sermons

  216. as they're recorded by Luke,

  217. and you see certain key themes

  218. emerge again and again.

  219. And so, we're going to notice

  220. some of those

  221. coming here in Peter's sermon.

  222. And hopefully, we can then think about,

  223. how do I communicate the good news?

  224. Are there any gaps?

  225. Is there any help for me

  226. in thinking about

  227. how to communicate the gospel

  228. as we read the book of Acts?

  229. I hope there will be.

  230. Just to remind ourselves,

  231. the setting here

  232. in Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  233. is that Cornelius,

  234. who is a Gentile soldier,

  235. has been told by an angel

  236. to go and send

  237. for a man called Peter

  238. and to bring him

  239. so that Peter can preach to him.

  240. And so, here is Peter

  241. in this soldier's house

  242. about to preach

  243. to his household.

  244. Again, a reminder

  245. of the different audiences,

  246. different places

  247. where preaching happened.

  248. So, Luke records

  249. a summary of the sermon,

  250. and we can see six key elements

  251. of gospel preaching

  252. that we find in the book of Acts.

  253. So, we'll notice them together.

  254. First key element

  255. that you will find

  256. across loads of the sermons

  257. is a recognition

  258. and understanding

  259. that Jesus fulfills

  260. Old Testament scriptures.

  261. How do we see it here?

  262. Verse 34,

  263. I now realize

  264. how true it is

  265. that God does not show favoritism,

  266. but accepts from every nation

  267. the one who fears him

  268. and does what is right.

  269. That's not something

  270. that merges brand new

  271. in the New Testament.

  272. That's something

  273. that's promised

  274. all the way back

  275. in Genesis 12

  276. to Abraham.

  277. One of your seed

  278. will bring blessing

  279. to the nations.

  280. If you remember,

  281. Martin Patterson

  282. preached for us

  283. on our mission Sunday

  284. from Zechariah chapter 8,

    Zechariah 8 chapter mention

  285. and in verse 23,

  286. we have that picture

  287. of here's the one Jewish guy

  288. and there's ten people

  289. from different nations

  290. grabbing onto his coat.

  291. Why?

  292. Because God is with you.

  293. And there's that expectation

  294. that in the new age,

  295. God's kingdom of grace

  296. is going to go wider.

  297. Whether it's going to go global,

  298. Jesus will be acknowledged

  299. as Lord of all.

  300. And so people from all nations

  301. are called to repent

  302. and to believe.

  303. God does not show favoritism.

  304. It's not just for a few.

  305. This is good news for the nations.

  306. Verse 36,

  307. we can also see

  308. Old Testament fulfillment.

  309. You know the message

  310. God sent to the people of Israel

  311. announcing the good news of peace

  312. through Jesus Christ

  313. who is Lord of all.

  314. Maybe that makes us think

  315. of Isaiah chapter 9,

    Isaiah 9:6

  316. verses 6 and 7.

  317. Let me read those famous words

  318. that we often connect

  319. with Christmas.

  320. And actually words

  321. that are mentioned

  322. in the Hope Explored course as well.

  323. For to us a child is born,

  324. to us a son is given,

  325. and the government

  326. will be on his shoulders.

  327. And he will be called

  328. Wonderful Counselor,

  329. Mighty God,

  330. Everlasting Father,

  331. Prince of Peace.

  332. There's our word.

  333. Of the greatness of his government

  334. and peace,

  335. there will be no end.

  336. He will reign on David's throne

  337. and over his kingdom

  338. from that time on

  339. and forever.

  340. The promised Prince of Peace

  341. is here,

  342. therefore the way of peace

  343. is open.

  344. Peace,

  345. as we discover

  346. and as they declare

  347. through the broken body

  348. and the shed blood

  349. of the Lord Jesus.

  350. So what we remember today

  351. as we share the Lord's Supper,

  352. that our peace,

  353. our reconciliation

  354. comes through Jesus,

  355. the Prince of Peace,

  356. who lays down his life

  357. so that our sins

  358. could be forgiven,

  359. so that we might be

  360. reconciled to our God.

  361. So this expectation

  362. of peace

  363. is fulfilled

  364. in Jesus.

  365. And so to read

  366. the sermons

  367. of the book of Acts

  368. is to discover

  369. that these first apostles,

  370. they read the Old Testament

  371. and they saw

  372. the glory of Jesus.

  373. They read the Old Testament

  374. and they saw

  375. the ministry of Jesus

  376. being anticipated

  377. in the pages

  378. of Scripture.

  379. Second key element

  380. of gospel preaching

  381. we find in the book of Acts,

  382. an emphasis on

  383. Jesus' unique

  384. ministry.

  385. Verse 37

  386. and 38.

  387. You know what's happened

  388. throughout the province

  389. of Judea,

  390. how God anointed

  391. Jesus of Nazareth

  392. with the Holy Spirit

  393. and power

  394. and how he went around

  395. doing good

  396. and healing all

  397. who are under the power

  398. of the devil

  399. because God was with him.

  400. He is anointed

  401. as the king.

  402. At his baptism

  403. the Holy Spirit

  404. came on him.

  405. His ministry

  406. was one marked

  407. by power.

  408. And it's significant

  409. that Peter can say

  410. to his listeners,

  411. you know,

  412. so perhaps some of them

  413. had seen it firsthand,

  414. but perhaps it's true

  415. that the reputation,

  416. the stories of Jesus

  417. were spreading

  418. far and wide

  419. and he was known

  420. for doing good.

  421. His miracles,

  422. his miracles

  423. demonstrate

  424. that Jesus

  425. is none other

  426. than mighty God.

  427. Jesus does

  428. unique things

  429. to serve people,

  430. to show compassion.

  431. We thought about him

  432. healing the blind

  433. so that many people

  434. were asking,

  435. who is this?

  436. And he's not just

  437. doing good,

  438. he's also driving out

  439. evil spirits,

  440. a reminder

  441. that Jesus

  442. is a spiritual king

  443. and he's come

  444. to wage

  445. spiritual battle.

  446. And that every time

  447. Jesus drives out

  448. a demon

  449. it was an anticipation

  450. of his kingdom coming,

  451. of that promise

  452. of a world

  453. that would be free

  454. of evil.

  455. Every miracle

  456. stands as a snapshot,

  457. a trailer

  458. to the great movie

  459. of the kingdom

  460. of God,

  461. to the future hope

  462. of a world

  463. free of suffering,

  464. free of sin,

  465. free of evil

  466. where Jesus

  467. will reign

  468. over all

  469. and where we will

  470. see

  471. and celebrate

  472. his glory.

  473. So they focus

  474. on Jesus'

  475. unique ministry.

  476. And then,

  477. verse 39 and 40,

  478. they focus,

  479. Peter focuses

  480. attention on

  481. Jesus'

  482. death

  483. and resurrection.

  484. He says,

  485. they killed him

  486. by hanging him

  487. on a cross,

  488. but God

  489. raised him

  490. from the dead

  491. on the third day

  492. and caused him

  493. to be seen.

  494. They killed him,

  495. God raised him.

  496. This isn't the first time

  497. Peter is preached

  498. in this way

  499. in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  500. Pentecost sermon.

  501. He can speak

  502. directly to the leaders

  503. and say,

  504. now here was your plan,

  505. your plan was wicked,

  506. you put Jesus to death,

  507. but it was God's plan.

  508. You didn't derail

  509. God's purpose

  510. of salvation.

  511. Think about the number

  512. of times Jesus

  513. predicted his own

  514. suffering and death,

  515. as we said this morning,

  516. six times at least.

  517. The cross was

  518. God's way

  519. of salvation.

  520. And the apostles

  521. clearly understood it

  522. after

  523. Jesus rose

  524. from the dead.

  525. They were confused

  526. beforehand.

  527. How can God's king

  528. suffer and die?

  529. But after,

  530. they understood.

  531. This acceptance

  532. that was promised

  533. in verse 35,

  534. this peace

  535. that is open

  536. to all

  537. in verse 36,

  538. how will it come?

  539. It will come

  540. through the blood

  541. of Jesus

  542. being shed

  543. for many.

  544. But then there's

  545. the focus too

  546. on the resurrection.

  547. And actually

  548. when you look

  549. at the emphasis

  550. on all the gospel

  551. sermons

  552. in the book of Acts,

  553. the emphasis

  554. falls on

  555. the fact

  556. that God

  557. raised Jesus

  558. from the dead.

  559. The miracle

  560. of the resurrection

  561. is the reason

  562. to listen

  563. and to believe

  564. the good news.

  565. That the resurrection

  566. of Jesus

  567. shows God's promise

  568. fulfilled.

  569. Psalm 16,

  570. Jesus is the holy one

  571. who is not abandoned

  572. today.

  573. Isaiah 53,

  574. he was the suffering

  575. servant who would see

  576. the light of life

  577. and be satisfied.

  578. So the central

  579. events of Easter,

  580. the central events

  581. of the Christian faith,

  582. always stand central

  583. to the preaching

  584. of the gospel

  585. that we find

  586. in the book of Acts.

  587. It should always

  588. be central

  589. to our communication

  590. of the gospel message.

  591. Another emphasis

  592. you may have picked up

  593. in verse 41,

  594. and you see it often

  595. in the sermons

  596. in the book of Acts,

  597. the apostles

  598. are eyewitnesses

  599. to Jesus.

  600. Actually,

  601. you see it in verse 39,

  602. we are witnesses

  603. of everything he did.

  604. So they are witnesses

  605. to his life

  606. and to his miracles

  607. and to his teaching.

  608. Verse 40,

  609. they are witnesses

  610. to the fact

  611. that he was raised

  612. from the dead.

  613. 41,

  614. he was not seen

  615. by all the people,

  616. but by witnesses

  617. whom God had already chosen,

  618. by us who ate

  619. and drank with him

  620. after he rose from the dead.

  621. Why talk about eating

  622. and drinking with Jesus?

  623. They are eyewitnesses

  624. to a real

  625. and physical resurrection.

  626. They've been chosen

  627. by God

  628. to see

  629. the evidence

  630. of this great reversal

  631. and then to share

  632. the reality

  633. of Jesus' risen Lord

  634. and the eternity

  635. shaping significance.

  636. The emphasis

  637. from the apostles

  638. is on them

  639. as reliable eyewitnesses.

  640. Luke,

  641. in his introduction

  642. to Luke Acts,

  643. Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1:1–4

  644. verses 1 to 4,

  645. that's where the emphasis

  646. falls on reliability,

  647. on eyewitness history,

  648. on it being

  649. an orderly account.

  650. It's not myth

  651. or legend.

  652. It's truth

  653. and they stand

  654. as eyewitnesses.

  655. But they're not finished.

  656. perhaps often

  657. when we communicate

  658. the gospel,

  659. we stop

  660. at the resurrection.

  661. But they push us further.

  662. The apostles often

  663. push us further

  664. and Peter does it here.

  665. Verse 42,

  666. Jesus is Lord

  667. and judge.

  668. He commanded us

  669. to preach

  670. to the people

  671. and to testify

  672. that he is the one

  673. whom God appointed

  674. as judge

  675. of the living

  676. and of the dead.

  677. verse 38,

  678. Jesus was anointed

  679. as saviour.

  680. Verse 42,

  681. Jesus is appointed

  682. as judge.

  683. What Peter

  684. reminds Cornelius

  685. and his household

  686. and reminds us

  687. is that Jesus

  688. today occupies

  689. the place of honour

  690. and power

  691. and glory

  692. and authority

  693. in heaven.

  694. that Jesus

  695. in the future

  696. will return

  697. to judge

  698. the living

  699. and the dead.

  700. This is Jesus

  701. himself said

  702. so often

  703. in his parables,

  704. those parables

  705. that speak

  706. of separation.

  707. You know,

  708. the parable

  709. of the sheep

  710. and the goats

  711. as one example.

  712. It gives

  713. an urgency.

  714. The apostles

  715. could testify

  716. that at his trial,

  717. Jesus found himself

  718. in the dock

  719. unjustly,

  720. falsely accused.

  721. His enemies

  722. said that he

  723. had committed

  724. blasphemy,

  725. claiming to be

  726. the Son of God.

  727. But here,

  728. Peter,

  729. the apostle,

  730. testifies that

  731. Jesus will return

  732. and he will return

  733. in his exalted,

  734. glorious position

  735. as judge

  736. and king.

  737. And each one

  738. of us

  739. will stand

  740. in his courtroom,

  741. be in the dock

  742. before him

  743. as judge.

  744. And so,

  745. as Paul said

  746. to Timothy,

  747. because that's true,

  748. there's an urgency

  749. in our communication

  750. of the gospel message

  751. and there's a need

  752. for people to hear.

  753. Remember,

  754. Paul said

  755. something similar

  756. in Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  757. He spoke about

  758. God setting a time

  759. when he'll judge

  760. all people

  761. and he's given

  762. proof of that

  763. by raising Jesus

  764. from the dead.

  765. Jesus is God's

  766. judge

  767. and the proof

  768. of that

  769. was the resurrection.

  770. One last element

  771. of gospel preaching

  772. we find in the book

  773. of Acts

  774. here in Acts

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  775. chapter 10

  776. is calling people

  777. to recognize

  778. their need

  779. to believe in Jesus.

  780. Verse 43,

  781. all the prophets

  782. testify about him

  783. that everyone

  784. who believes

  785. in him

  786. receives forgiveness

  787. of sins

  788. through his name.

  789. So,

  790. in a sense,

  791. we're back

  792. to fulfillment

  793. of scripture again.

  794. Here we're invited

  795. and especially

  796. as we look forward

  797. to sharing

  798. the Lord's Supper

  799. to recognize

  800. that Jesus

  801. brings in

  802. the new covenant.

  803. And what's the promise

  804. in the book of Ezekiel

  805. when the new covenant

  806. comes,

  807. there'll be forgiveness,

  808. there'll be a new heart,

  809. there'll be a new ability

  810. for the people of God

  811. to obey.

  812. And that reality

  813. is true

  814. for all

  815. who will believe

  816. in Jesus.

  817. And so,

  818. in light

  819. of the uniqueness

  820. of Christ,

  821. in light

  822. of his identity,

  823. his power,

  824. his death

  825. and resurrection,

  826. Peter calls

  827. on Cornelius

  828. and Cornelius'

  829. household

  830. to faith,

  831. to belief,

  832. to trust

  833. in the Lord

  834. Jesus.

  835. This week,

  836. outside our

  837. school gates,

  838. some primary

  839. fives have been

  840. collecting

  841. for Ukraine.

  842. And the people

  843. who were collecting,

  844. let's just say

  845. they were very

  846. invested

  847. in their task.

  848. They didn't let

  849. anybody off

  850. the hook

  851. very easily.

  852. You know,

  853. they knew

  854. that Ukraine

  855. needed help

  856. and they guessed

  857. that people

  858. had money

  859. and so the

  860. buckets were

  861. being shaken.

  862. The request

  863. was being

  864. given

  865. repeatedly.

  866. And do you know

  867. in a sense,

  868. I think,

  869. as a church,

  870. we could do

  871. with more of that.

  872. Sometimes

  873. we're content

  874. with information

  875. transfer.

  876. forever.

  877. But the

  878. gospel

  879. proclamation

  880. calls for

  881. decision,

  882. calls people

  883. to repent

  884. and believe.

  885. We want

  886. lives to be

  887. transformed

  888. because we

  889. believe that

  890. this truth

  891. matters

  892. eternally.

  893. So what

  894. you see

  895. from Acts

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  896. chapter 10

  897. from Peter's

  898. sermon

  899. is six

  900. of the

  901. elements.

  902. You can

  903. go through

  904. the book

  905. of Acts.

  906. It would be

  907. very interesting

  908. for you

  909. if you had

  910. time to go

  911. through the

  912. book of Acts

  913. and to see

  914. all those

  915. sermons

  916. and you'll

  917. see those

  918. elements.

  919. But when we

  920. think about

  921. our own

  922. desire to

  923. share the

  924. good news

  925. of Jesus

  926. with others,

  927. perhaps some

  928. things that

  929. come out

  930. for us.

  931. One,

  932. I think a

  933. reminder that we

  934. can trust the

  935. New Testament

  936. record.

  937. that we can

  938. invite others

  939. to examine

  940. it without

  941. fear.

  942. The

  943. reliability of

  944. the Word of

  945. God, the

  946. reliability of

  947. the Gospels,

  948. the account of

  949. the resurrection,

  950. they stand up

  951. to examination

  952. and we can

  953. invite our

  954. friends to

  955. examine if

  956. they are

  957. curious, if

  958. they are

  959. even

  960. skeptical.

  961. We have

  962. eyewitness

  963. history and

  964. that history

  965. is reliable.

  966. I think too

  967. we are

  968. reminded when

  969. we look at

  970. the preaching

  971. in Acts

  972. that we

  973. focus on

  974. the uniqueness

  975. of Jesus.

  976. He isn't

  977. just one

  978. among many,

  979. he is

  980. utterly

  981. unique.

  982. Unique in

  983. his identity,

  984. unique in

  985. his powerful

  986. ministry,

  987. unique in

  988. his death

  989. and resurrection,

  990. unique in

  991. the fact that

  992. he will

  993. return as

  994. King of

  995. Kings and

  996. Lord of

  997. Lords and

  998. he will

  999. bring in

  1000. the world

  1001. we all

  1002. want.

  1003. one of

  1004. the things

  1005. that I

  1006. certainly

  1007. find

  1008. challenging

  1009. in

  1010. thinking

  1011. about

  1012. how do

  1013. we

  1014. share

  1015. the

  1016. gospel

  1017. is

  1018. this

  1019. reminder

  1020. from the

  1021. book of

  1022. Acts that

  1023. the future

  1024. is always

  1025. part of

  1026. the gospel

  1027. message.

  1028. And

  1029. indeed Paul

  1030. would say

  1031. to Timothy

  1032. that the

  1033. future

  1034. is part of

  1035. the motivation

  1036. for communicating

  1037. the gospel

  1038. message.

  1039. And maybe

  1040. one other

  1041. thing for us

  1042. to reflect

  1043. on is

  1044. how often

  1045. you find

  1046. when you

  1047. read through

  1048. the sermons

  1049. in the

  1050. book of

  1051. Acts,

  1052. whether they're

  1053. public or

  1054. whether they're

  1055. more private,

  1056. is that they

  1057. call for a

  1058. moment of

  1059. decision.

  1060. And isn't

  1061. that so often

  1062. perhaps the

  1063. hardest bit?

  1064. If we're

  1065. trying to

  1066. share something

  1067. of our

  1068. faith.

  1069. But it's

  1070. something that

  1071. people need

  1072. to hear.

  1073. Especially

  1074. when we live

  1075. in an age

  1076. where it's

  1077. like,

  1078. well that's

  1079. fine for

  1080. you but

  1081. that's

  1082. not really

  1083. my thing.

  1084. Because the

  1085. authority of

  1086. Jesus is

  1087. absolute,

  1088. because he

  1089. is Lord

  1090. and judge

  1091. over all,

  1092. everybody needs

  1093. to know

  1094. and to be

  1095. called to

  1096. respond.

  1097. What we'll

  1098. do just as

  1099. we close

  1100. is to go

  1101. back now

  1102. to 2nd

  1103. Timothy and

  1104. just think

  1105. very briefly

  1106. about three

  1107. reasons Paul

  1108. says why

  1109. we need

  1110. preaching

  1111. and teaching.

  1112. preaching.

  1113. So I

  1114. hope we

  1115. will have

  1116. this firmly

  1117. established in

  1118. our heads

  1119. that we

  1120. need

  1121. preaching

  1122. in the

  1123. context of

  1124. a spiritual

  1125. health check.

  1126. Maybe that

  1127. thing that we've

  1128. always done

  1129. and we've

  1130. never really

  1131. thought about

  1132. it.

  1133. We always

  1134. preach.

  1135. That we'd

  1136. understand its

  1137. importance.

  1138. three things

  1139. that Paul

  1140. says to

  1141. Timothy.

  1142. One,

  1143. the church

  1144. is a

  1145. community

  1146. that is

  1147. formed

  1148. by God's

  1149. word.

  1150. We're not

  1151. formed because

  1152. we share the

  1153. same culture,

  1154. because we

  1155. don't.

  1156. We're not

  1157. formed because

  1158. we share the

  1159. same lifestyle

  1160. or we share

  1161. the same

  1162. struggles or

  1163. we happen to

  1164. listen to the

  1165. same speaker.

  1166. That's not what

  1167. brings us

  1168. together.

  1169. We are

  1170. formed as we

  1171. live under

  1172. the word of

  1173. God.

  1174. Look at all

  1175. the words that

  1176. he mentions

  1177. about the

  1178. word of

  1179. God.

  1180. It's the

  1181. word of

  1182. God that

  1183. makes us

  1184. wise for

  1185. salvation.

  1186. It's the

  1187. word of

  1188. God that

  1189. teaches us.

  1190. It's the

  1191. word of

  1192. God that

  1193. rebukes and

  1194. corrects when

  1195. we are prone

  1196. to disobedience

  1197. and drift.

  1198. It's the

  1199. word of

  1200. God that

  1201. trains and

  1202. equips us.

  1203. Just as

  1204. every soldier

  1205. needs equipment,

  1206. every sports

  1207. person needs

  1208. equipment,

  1209. the equipment

  1210. we need to

  1211. live the

  1212. life of

  1213. faith is

  1214. the word

  1215. of God.

  1216. So we

  1217. are a

  1218. community

  1219. formed by

  1220. God's

  1221. word.

  1222. But

  1223. secondly,

  1224. the church

  1225. is a

  1226. community

  1227. in awe

  1228. of

  1229. God's

  1230. word.

  1231. So we

  1232. mentioned

  1233. this a

  1234. couple of

  1235. times.

  1236. Why is

  1237. Timothy to

  1238. preach?

  1239. What does

  1240. Paul say

  1241. to him?

  1242. In the

  1243. presence of

  1244. God and

  1245. of Christ

  1246. Jesus,

  1247. who will

  1248. judge the

  1249. living and

  1250. the dead,

  1251. and in

  1252. view of

  1253. his appearing

  1254. in his

  1255. kingdom,

  1256. I give

  1257. you this

  1258. charge,

  1259. preach the

  1260. word.

  1261. So because

  1262. Jesus is

  1263. judged,

  1264. because Jesus

  1265. is returning,

  1266. because Jesus

  1267. is establishing

  1268. his kingdom,

  1269. the church

  1270. is to

  1271. preach and

  1272. to be

  1273. committed to

  1274. preaching and

  1275. teaching.

  1276. Paul's

  1277. point is it's

  1278. crucial to

  1279. listen to and

  1280. obey the

  1281. word of God

  1282. if we are to

  1283. be justified,

  1284. if we are to

  1285. be ready,

  1286. if we are to

  1287. be part of

  1288. the kingdom

  1289. of God.

  1290. So we

  1291. preach and

  1292. teach with a

  1293. sense of

  1294. awe and

  1295. wonder.

  1296. Our God

  1297. and Father

  1298. and Christ

  1299. our Savior.

  1300. And finally,

  1301. Paul says to

  1302. Timothy,

  1303. the church

  1304. is a

  1305. community

  1306. holding

  1307. firmly

  1308. to God's

  1309. word.

  1310. Verse 3,

  1311. for the time

  1312. will come

  1313. when people

  1314. will not

  1315. put up

  1316. with sound

  1317. doctrine.

  1318. Verse 4,

  1319. they will

  1320. turn their

  1321. ears away

  1322. from the

  1323. truth and

  1324. turn aside

  1325. to myths.

  1326. The Bible's

  1327. always been

  1328. under attack.

  1329. Philosophers,

  1330. scientists,

  1331. artists,

  1332. governments,

  1333. the church

  1334. always faces

  1335. temptation,

  1336. or just

  1337. give people

  1338. what they

  1339. want to

  1340. hear.

  1341. Perhaps

  1342. leave the

  1343. hard bits,

  1344. soften some

  1345. of the

  1346. rough edges.

  1347. Why not

  1348. blend in

  1349. and give

  1350. a message

  1351. that culture

  1352. is going

  1353. to receive

  1354. better?

  1355. Paul knew

  1356. that temptation,

  1357. Timothy knew

  1358. that pressure,

  1359. but what

  1360. does Paul

  1361. say?

  1362. He says

  1363. to Timothy,

  1364. keep your

  1365. head.

  1366. Commit to

  1367. preaching and

  1368. teaching the

  1369. Bible in

  1370. our evangelism

  1371. and in

  1372. our

  1373. discipleship.

  1374. Just as we

  1375. close,

  1376. one question

  1377. perhaps to

  1378. help us

  1379. to reflect.

  1380. Since

  1381. this is

  1382. true,

  1383. how do

  1384. I,

  1385. how do

  1386. we approach

  1387. God's

  1388. word?

  1389. And maybe

  1390. especially

  1391. the preaching

  1392. of God's

  1393. word.

  1394. Let me

  1395. give you

  1396. three very

  1397. simple

  1398. T's

  1399. to take

  1400. away.

  1401. First,

  1402. we turn

  1403. up.

  1404. never

  1405. underestimate

  1406. the value

  1407. of long,

  1408. steady

  1409. character

  1410. formation

  1411. if we

  1412. commit

  1413. ourselves

  1414. to

  1415. sitting

  1416. under

  1417. the

  1418. preaching

  1419. of

  1420. God's

  1421. word.

  1422. But it

  1423. requires us,

  1424. doesn't it,

  1425. to tune in,

  1426. to be

  1427. engaged.

  1428. Perhaps

  1429. to think,

  1430. what is it

  1431. that helps

  1432. me to

  1433. listen and

  1434. learn the

  1435. best?

  1436. Some of

  1437. us,

  1438. it's

  1439. note

  1440. taking.

  1441. I'm

  1442. definitely

  1443. a note

  1444. taker.

  1445. I find

  1446. that really

  1447. helpful for

  1448. concentration

  1449. and

  1450. memorization.

  1451. But come

  1452. tuned in

  1453. to be

  1454. engaged,

  1455. ready to

  1456. hear and

  1457. to receive.

  1458. And the

  1459. third one,

  1460. take it

  1461. to heart.

  1462. Consider

  1463. the truth

  1464. of God's

  1465. word,

  1466. not for

  1467. others,

  1468. but for

  1469. me.

  1470. And

  1471. consider the

  1472. truth of

  1473. God's

  1474. word,

  1475. not just

  1476. for me,

  1477. but for

  1478. us.

  1479. as a

  1480. congregation.

  1481. Turn up,

  1482. tune in,

  1483. take it

  1484. to heart.

  1485. A healthy

  1486. church is

  1487. a church

  1488. that's

  1489. committed

  1490. to the

  1491. preaching

  1492. and teaching

  1493. of God's

  1494. word.

  1495. May that

  1496. always be

  1497. true of

  1498. us as a

  1499. local

  1500. church.

  1501. Let's

  1502. pray

  1503. together.

  1504. Lord,

  1505. we remember

  1506. the

  1507. apostles

  1508. declared

  1509. that salvation

  1510. is found

  1511. in no

  1512. one else,

  1513. for there

  1514. is no

  1515. other name

  1516. under heaven

  1517. given to

  1518. mankind by

  1519. which we

  1520. must be

  1521. saved.

  1522. Help

  1523. each one

  1524. of us

  1525. to believe

  1526. the gospel

  1527. and give

  1528. us courage

  1529. and confidence

  1530. and wisdom

  1531. and help

  1532. to proclaim

  1533. the gospel.

  1534. people.

  1535. We pray

  1536. that you

  1537. would protect

  1538. us individually

  1539. and as a

  1540. church from

  1541. a low

  1542. view of

  1543. your word

  1544. and a low

  1545. view of

  1546. preaching.

  1547. But rather

  1548. you would make

  1549. us a church

  1550. that is

  1551. committed

  1552. to preaching

  1553. and teaching

  1554. the Bible

  1555. as your

  1556. word,

  1557. your word

  1558. of revelation,

  1559. your word

  1560. that speaks

  1561. of your

  1562. salvation

  1563. by grace

  1564. through faith

  1565. in the

  1566. Lord Jesus.

  1567. Because our

  1568. world needs

  1569. to hear that

  1570. message more

  1571. than anything

  1572. else.

  1573. Please give

  1574. us that

  1575. conviction

  1576. and please

  1577. give us

  1578. opportunities

  1579. this week

  1580. to speak

  1581. and to

  1582. proclaim

  1583. the good

  1584. news of

  1585. Jesus.

  1586. Amen.

  1587. Now,

  1588. in just

  1589. a few

  1590. moments,

  1591. we will

  1592. be sharing

  1593. the Lord's

  1594. Supper

  1595. as the

  1596. people of

  1597. God

  1598. receiving

  1599. these

  1600. elements.

  1601. I want

  1602. to read

  1603. a verse

  1604. Corinthians

  1605. 1,

  1606. verse 21.

  1607. It says,

  1608. and it's up

  1609. on our

  1610. screen,

  1611. For since

  1612. in the

  1613. wisdom

  1614. of God

  1615. the world

  1616. through its

  1617. wisdom

  1618. did not

  1619. know him,

  1620. God

  1621. was pleased

  1622. through the

  1623. foolishness

  1624. of what

  1625. was preached,

  1626. to save

  1627. those who

  1628. believe.

  1629. The Lord's

  1630. Supper was

  1631. a gift that

  1632. Jesus gave

  1633. to the

  1634. church,

  1635. and the

  1636. Lord's

  1637. Supper

  1638. preaches

  1639. the gospel

  1640. to us.

  1641. What

  1642. message

  1643. does the

  1644. Lord's

  1645. Supper

  1646. preach to

  1647. us?

  1648. Well,

  1649. it's a

  1650. visible reminder,

  1651. isn't it,

  1652. of the cross

  1653. of the

  1654. Lord Jesus,

  1655. that by

  1656. his wounds

  1657. we are

  1658. healed,

  1659. that in

  1660. his sacrifice

  1661. we know

  1662. forgiveness,

  1663. that the

  1664. Lord's

  1665. Supper

  1666. reminds us

  1667. that we

  1668. enter into

  1669. the new

  1670. covenant

  1671. by his

  1672. blood.

  1673. God's

  1674. plan for

  1675. you and

  1676. me to

  1677. have

  1678. fellowship

  1679. with him

  1680. now and

  1681. for eternity

  1682. rests in

  1683. Jesus shedding

  1684. his precious

  1685. blood.

  1686. receiving the

  1687. elements of

  1688. the Lord's

  1689. Supper also

  1690. reminds us

  1691. in a way

  1692. that we

  1693. need a

  1694. salvation

  1695. from outside

  1696. of ourselves.

  1697. It is a

  1698. gift of

  1699. grace that

  1700. we receive

  1701. by faith.

  1702. The

  1703. Lord's

  1704. Supper,

  1705. as we

  1706. share it

  1707. together,

  1708. also reminds

  1709. us that

  1710. God has

  1711. made us

  1712. a new

  1713. community,

  1714. a new

  1715. body,

  1716. He has

  1717. called us

  1718. together,

  1719. different

  1720. backgrounds,

  1721. different

  1722. experiences,

  1723. but all

  1724. one in

  1725. Christ

  1726. Jesus,

  1727. and we

  1728. share this

  1729. meal

  1730. together

  1731. for those

  1732. of us

  1733. who are

  1734. members of

  1735. God's

  1736. church,

  1737. those who

  1738. have faith

  1739. in the

  1740. Lord Jesus.

  1741. And so

  1742. this supper

  1743. that we

  1744. share is

  1745. for all

  1746. who have

  1747. put their

  1748. faith in

  1749. Jesus,

  1750. who are

  1751. members of

  1752. God's

  1753. church,

  1754. and who

  1755. know that

  1756. we have an

  1757. ongoing need

  1758. for His

  1759. grace.

  1760. And so

  1761. in just a

  1762. moment we'll

  1763. be directed

  1764. to collect

  1765. the bread

  1766. and the

  1767. wine,

  1768. and while

  1769. that's

  1770. happening,

  1771. we'll also

  1772. stand and

  1773. we will sing

  1774. the hymn

  1775. Come Behold

  1776. the Wondrous

  1777. Mystery to

  1778. help us

  1779. reflect on

  1780. the gospel.

  1781. So let's

  1782. stand and

  1783. let's sing

  1784. and folks

  1785. will be

  1786. directed to

  1787. collect the

  1788. elements at

  1789. the appropriate

  1790. time.

  1791. Amen.

  1792. Amen.

  1793. Amen.

  1794. Amen.

  1795. Amen.

  1796. Amen.

  1797. Amen.

  1798. Amen.

  1799. Amen.

  1800. Amen.

  1801. Amen.

  1802. Amen.

  1803. Amen.

  1804. Amen.

  1805. Amen.

  1806. Amen.

  1807. Amen.

  1808. Amen.

  1809. Amen.
