  1. now just before we turn back to look chapter 19 let's pray once again

  2. lord david could pray with that desire that he would be satisfied in seeing your face

  3. being in your presence and enjoying your glory and lord we pray that the same would be true for

  4. each one of us today that you know that we've come here from different stories backgrounds

  5. circumstances and situations and for some our hearts are joyful for some our hearts are troubled

  6. for many our hearts even now are distracted but lord we pray that you would give us that desire

  7. to seek your face and that you would show us more of jesus in your word we pray amen

  8. so as we continue on the journey towards easter as we follow the journey of jesus in the gospel of

  9. luke we come to what's sometimes known as the triumphal entry jesus approaching and entering

  10. jerusalem and our question today is a very personal what is your response to king jesus

  11. what is my response to king jesus and especially as we see him come as the king of peace as it

  12. happened peace was the theme of our hope explored course this past monday and so we thought about

  13. that deep longing that we have as people for peace now whether that's peace out there and we can think

  14. about war we can think about hatred we can think about racism and we long to see an end to that

  15. and whether the longing for peace right now is is in here in our own hearts perhaps we're full of

  16. anxiety and stress and uncertainty or maybe for us when we think of our longing for peace we're thinking

  17. about peace between us and we're conscious perhaps of relationships that are strained or broken

  18. peace in our time peace in our time is something we are all going to be looking for perhaps we remember

  19. in our history at school at the time when neville chamberlain arrived back home to a hero's welcome

  20. announcing a peace in our time a great thanksgiving thanksgiving in churches because chamberlain believed he had

  21. secured peace a promise of peace a promise of peace from hitler of course that turned out to be

  22. a false promise and a false peace and perhaps even that reminds us that as much as we long for peace we also

  23. recognize peace is something that's easily lost sometimes all it takes is a careless word sometimes it's the

  24. word that's left unsaid sometimes it's words spoken in anger or we go to the attitudes and emotions

  25. in our heart perhaps because of pride perhaps because of pride or because of selfishness or an

  26. unwillingness to make the first move towards reconciliation we can live with broken peace

  27. peace is a fragile thing fragile is a spider's web and all too often it's we that break the thread

  28. so we long for it but we recognize how easily it can be lost well today there is good news for us as we

  29. consider the journey of jesus because he comes announcing himself as the lord of peace here he is in this bold

  30. public triumphant entry into jerusalem coming as the king of peace riding on a donkey and he comes to bring

  31. the deepest peace a lasting peace a spiritual peace peace between us and god and he will make peace by way of

  32. his blood by way of the cross

  33. and as he is on this journey as he comes towards jerusalem we see that there are different responses

  34. to jesus and that invites us to make our response to king jesus too

  35. how will people respond how did people respond then how do you and i respond today

  36. so let's notice and what happens when the king of peace arrives verse 28 to verse 35 we have it there

  37. it maybe you've been around and seen the excitement and the crowds that gather when a member of the royal

  38. family arrives in a city or a town or maybe a president or a prime minister comes but even if not we've

  39. definitely seen it on the television we know that there are crowds and colors and flags and cheering and

  40. gifts and honor is shown and we see some of that here don't we this is jerusalem at passover time

  41. a great time of national celebration as well as one of those national times of worship and there's

  42. always great enthusiasm and hope and expectation at this time wondering will this be the year when god's

  43. king will come will this be the year when deliverance comes will we have peace in our time peace as rome

  44. is removed most people were looking for a political peace one of the reasons why people missed the

  45. significance of jesus but but look with me a few things first of all think about the plan

  46. of jesus let's read again verse 30 and 31 these are jesus words to his disciples go to the village

  47. ahead of you and as you enter it you'll find a colt tied there which no one has ever ridden it

  48. has ever ridden untie and bring it here if anyone asks why are you untying it say the lord needs it

  49. so jerusalem's on the horizon and jesus issues these instructions he's setting his royal timetable

  50. his plan is put into effect now what do we make of that scene for some people they hear this and

  51. think well jesus has planned this in advance so that the lord needs it becomes a kind of password

  52. so jesus already pre-arranged it and for others and we hear the lord needs it and perhaps that reminds

  53. us here is jesus who is the lord the lord of creation he owns it all he has rights over it all

  54. and so the folks that own the donkey recognize the authority of jesus the lord

  55. others look at it and say well here is jesus showing that he knows the future

  56. he knows what's going to happen when his disciples go into the town he knows the conversation that's going

  57. to take place and in a sense we're not invited to know which of these are true and in fact all of

  58. them can be true at the same time but what we do know as we put those together is that here is the lord

  59. jesus deliberately directing events so that he will make this journey to the cross now that's the ultimate

  60. plan that's going on here and as we think about that we need to stop and think about who is this jesus

  61. who is directing things towards the cross luke's gospel has been building a profile for us we've

  62. jumped in towards the end of his gospel but we can think just for a couple of minutes for example back to

  63. when jesus um birth it is being announced to mary his mother by the angels and what's mary told

  64. that your son will be the son of the most high will be the son of god and he will sit on the throne of

  65. david forever and we can think about jesus baptism and we see the significance of king jesus there is

  66. the spirit comes down upon him and as the father announces this is my son i love him i'm well pleased

  67. with him when you think about the ministry of jesus and what do people recognize in the ministry of jesus

  68. they see don't they his power and authority as he teaches his power and authority in his miracles

  69. here is one who has power over sickness and storms over disease and over death itself

  70. so that people were frequently asking who is this

  71. and then we can think about the mission of jesus last week we heard him say at the house of zacchaeus

  72. that he'd come to seek and to save the lost he announces in the gospel multiple times he has come

  73. to suffer and be rejected and to die and to rise in order to bring forgiveness and eternal life

  74. and so here we have this powerful king this one with all authority this one who is god in the flesh

  75. who deliberately chooses to ride on a donkey towards his own day

  76. and so we think about all that we're told about jesus in the gospel we need to ask ourselves why

  77. why that journey why the donkey

  78. and that takes us to a really important prophecy

  79. jesus is a very conscious that he has come by the plan of god according to the promise of god's word

  80. and he's come to fulfill scripture so think about it even today and whenever a royal is moving around

  81. or a prime minister or a president their transport is making a statement

  82. it's always expensive grand there's always a grand entrance

  83. just make it a statement in jesus day when a triumphant king was riding into a city you expect a war horse

  84. and you expect this great procession you don't expect a donkey

  85. and remember jesus is lord jesus is lord over all creation if he wanted a horse he could have had a horse

  86. he chose a donkey so why is he making this statement and that's where we need to turn to the old testament

  87. and we need to turn to zechariah chapter 9

    Zechariah 9:9–11

  88. verses 9 to 11 to help us to see this so we have the words of zechariah 9 9 to 11 up there so i'm going

  89. to read them for us where we read rejoice greatly daughter zion shout daughter jerusalem and that's the

  90. picture we have at the triumphal entry see your king comes to you righteous and victorious lowly and

  91. riding on a donkey on a colt the foal of a donkey i will take away the chariots from ephraim and the

  92. war horses from jerusalem and the battle bow will be broken he will proclaim peace to the nations

  93. his rule will extend from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth

  94. as for you because of the blood of my covenant with you i will free your prisoners from the waterless pit

  95. why does jesus choose the donkey he chooses the donkey to announce i am this promised king

  96. the promised king we have here in zechariah the one who comes righteous jesus is the only truly

  97. righteous person ever to have lived never sinned always lived for the glory of god lived in full

  98. obedience to his father's will here is jesus the king who is victorious he is coming to wage war on those

  99. great enemies of satan and sin and death those enemies that we are powerless against but he will win

  100. a victory through the cross and the resurrection he is all powerful and yet he is humble and gentle and

  101. lowly and he comes riding on a donkey and he is the king of peace and he proclaims his message is a

  102. message of peace and not just peace for some but peace to all nations his rule and authority extends to

  103. all nations so he is the hope for all people he's the hope for you and for me today so in choosing the

  104. donkey jesus is announcing that those hopes of deep peace that you and i have in our hearts those longings

  105. that we have they are met in jesus in jesus we can be reconciled to god our relationship with god

  106. broken by our sin can be restored through faith in him why is it good news that jesus comes riding on

  107. the donkey well it's good news if we see for ourselves the problem of sin and the lack of peace we have with

  108. god because of our sin when the bible speaks of sin it speaks of us breaking god's good laws

  109. god is our creator and our maker and he has designed how life is to work at its best and we break those

  110. laws sometimes accidentally but often deliberately

  111. sin is rejecting god's good rule the bible declares that god is our king and we owe him our

  112. loyalty and our worship but sin is when we turn our back on god when we'd rather live our own way

  113. now we'd rather not follow him sin is when we replace our one good god with an idol where we choose to

  114. make something within creation whether that be a person or our work or our hobby or whatever it might be

  115. more important to us than the living god we find our our security and our sense of identity and purpose

  116. in a created thing and not our god the bible says that's idolatry and that's sin

  117. sin is when we resist god's good and loving will

  118. sin is when we choose darkness over light and the bible is clear and actually jesus is clear

  119. that the consequence of turning away from the light and choosing darkness is to face eternal darkness

  120. is to be cut off from god and all that is good and all that is loving forever it's the reality of hell as

  121. jesus speaks about it in the bible and so when we understand the problem of sin

  122. and the problem that it brings with our hearts and we can have no peace with god by ourselves

  123. then it's good news that jesus comes as this king bringing peace and if we're ready to listen we can

  124. receive the solution we even find it here anticipated in zechariah 9

  125. so he will proclaim verse 10 he'll proclaim peace to the nations and then in verse 11

  126. we're told about the blood of my covenant with you

  127. here's the reason for jesus journey to the cross

  128. last week in church we celebrated the lord's supper and every time we celebrate the lord's supper it's a

  129. picture of the work of jesus we take bread and it represents jesus said his body which is broken

  130. for his people we take a cup of wine which represents his blood shed for us and and jesus said this cup

  131. is the new covenant in my blood

  132. so jesus has come to bring us back into restored relationship with our god he has come to make peace

  133. but he can only do that through his blood

  134. and that explains why jesus rides on a donkey it explains why he journeys to the cross

  135. so that he might out of sheer love and mercy and grace cover our sin

  136. that he might be the sacrifice that absorbs the wrath of god that we deserve to face instead it will fall

  137. on jesus his is the blood that pays the redemption price so that we can know freedom and not slavery

  138. and not live with fear

  139. jesus experiences rejection jesus tastes death so that we might have peace that we might have peace in here

  140. in our hearts knowing forgiveness from god knowing there's no condemnation for us knowing that guilt has

  141. been removed and that we can enjoy through faith in jesus a peace that passes all understanding

  142. a peace to guard our hearts and our minds come what may

  143. but it's not just peace in here the cross actually provides peace between us between us and god

  144. there's a wonderful little section in colossians chapter 1 verses 19 and 20 it says for god was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him

    Colossians 1:19

  145. jesus is fully god and through him to reconcile to himself all things

  146. whether things on earth or things in heaven by making peace through his blood shed on the cross

  147. reconciliation peace through the blood of jesus

  148. and when we by faith trust in jesus the war is over between us and god

  149. peace breaks out and joy breaks out perhaps we

  150. remember

  151. perhaps when the the berlin wall fell and the celebrations that happened perhaps we've seen scenes of

  152. street parties at the end of world war ii well by faith in jesus as

  153. our peace is restored there's a greater joy

  154. for the people of god

  155. but it's not just peace in here it's not just peace between us that jesus came to secure it's also peace

  156. out there peace in the world by trusting in jesus as jesus comes to bring in his kingdom

  157. we can look forward with hope as the people of god

  158. to jesus future kingdom

  159. of perfect

  160. lasting peace

  161. a place of wholeness and completeness of security and tranquility

  162. when he comes to establish the new creation

  163. when he comes to deal with sin once and for all

  164. and when we get to live with peace hope and joy

  165. and perfect love

  166. so the king of peace arrives

  167. but the question still remains

  168. what will the response of the people be

  169. and more importantly for us what will our response be

  170. to this king

  171. who brings peace

  172. two responses we recognize

  173. the first is that of rejoicing

  174. there is a group who are rejoicing over the king of peace

  175. here is jesus again he's boldly publicly

  176. entering into jerusalem and these actions are calling for a decision and there's one group

  177. who bring out the royal carpet

  178. verse 35 and 36

  179. they brought the colt to jesus through their cloaks on the colt and put jesus on it

  180. as he went along

  181. people spread their cloaks on the road

  182. now this is the way for people in those days to show honor

  183. to give a glad welcome

  184. to give the smoothest ride possible

  185. perhaps for us the closest we get is towards the red carpet treatment

  186. but the way jesus is welcome to jerusalem

  187. is the same

  188. you can go to the old testament second kings nine

  189. and you'll discover

  190. that's how jehu

  191. is welcomed and honored

  192. so there are some who rejoice because god's king

  193. has come

  194. and then they join this royal chorus

  195. in verse 38

  196. blessed is the king who comes in the name of the lord

  197. peace in heaven

  198. and glory in the highest

  199. so that first

  200. part of the verse

  201. from psalm 118

    Psalms 118:26

  202. verse 26

  203. so there are some

  204. who are singing those psalms of ascent

  205. festival psalms

  206. and they recognize

  207. here is jesus the royal king

  208. who arrives to jerusalem with honor

  209. think about those verses that we sang

  210. jesus is the king who saves

  211. jesus is the king who demonstrates

  212. the love and goodness of god

  213. jesus is the lord's king

  214. and so there are some people

  215. as they're singing that psalm

  216. they recognize this is true of jesus

  217. and so they are rejoicing

  218. but then they also find themselves shouting

  219. peace in heaven

  220. and glory in the highest

  221. and that

  222. is very reminiscent of

  223. the song of the angels

  224. as jesus is born

  225. and as the angels appear

  226. to shepherds

  227. looking after their sheep

  228. that first christmas

  229. and we find in chapter 2 verse 14

  230. glory to god

  231. in the highest heaven

  232. and on earth

  233. peace

  234. to those

  235. on whom

  236. his favor

  237. rests

  238. peace

  239. and glory

  240. in earth

  241. and in heaven

  242. why

  243. because god

  244. is reconciled

  245. to the human race

  246. through jesus

  247. who is totally god

  248. and totally man

  249. there is joy

  250. for those who recognize

  251. that the events of easter

  252. are the only path

  253. to true peace

  254. that jesus has come

  255. as promised

  256. to bring

  257. lasting peace

  258. the crowds

  259. as they rejoice

  260. they do so

  261. for two reasons

  262. in verse 37

  263. they praise god

  264. in loud voices

  265. for all the miracles

  266. they've seen

  267. so they've either

  268. been there

  269. or they've heard

  270. by reputation

  271. the wonderful

  272. powerful things

  273. that jesus has done

  274. and they conclude

  275. well this

  276. isn't any

  277. ordinary person

  278. this is none

  279. other than god's

  280. promised messiah king

  281. and so they rejoice

  282. they also sing

  283. because they recognize

  284. here is one

  285. who fulfills

  286. all those

  287. old testament promises

  288. and they're reading

  289. or they're hearing

  290. the scriptures read

  291. and they're recognizing

  292. this is fulfilled

  293. jesus

  294. and so they have joy

  295. because they see

  296. jesus

  297. as the answer

  298. to their longing

  299. for peace

  300. much deeper

  301. than just a

  302. political peace

  303. peace in their

  304. hearts

  305. peace in

  306. the world

  307. peace between

  308. them and

  309. god

  310. because jesus

  311. has come

  312. and so they sing

  313. for joy

  314. just as we began

  315. with that

  316. great hymn

  317. of praise

  318. praise my soul

  319. the king of heaven

  320. to his feet

  321. thy tribute

  322. bring

  323. why

  324. because we've been

  325. ransomed

  326. healed and restored

  327. and forgiven

  328. who like we

  329. his praise

  330. should sing

  331. the people of god

  332. rejoice

  333. over the king

  334. of peace

  335. but that's not the only

  336. response

  337. and we also need to

  338. consider the second

  339. response

  340. because we see

  341. there are those

  342. who reject

  343. the king

  344. of peace

  345. for those of us

  346. who like football

  347. i wonder if you've

  348. ever been the away

  349. fan

  350. in the home

  351. end

  352. when a match

  353. is being played

  354. if so you've

  355. probably had the

  356. uncomfortable

  357. experience of

  358. of not joining

  359. in the same

  360. songs that everyone

  361. else is singing

  362. you don't celebrate

  363. the same goals

  364. as they are scored

  365. you stick out

  366. different emotions

  367. different responses

  368. well here

  369. there is a crowd

  370. joyfully praising

  371. and then there are

  372. the pharisees

  373. you can almost

  374. picture them

  375. can't you

  376. with their arms

  377. folded

  378. and they're scowling

  379. and they're ready

  380. to rebuke

  381. jesus

  382. teacher

  383. they say

  384. in verse 39

  385. rebuke

  386. your

  387. disciples

  388. here is a group

  389. of religious leaders

  390. so they've read

  391. their bibles

  392. they study

  393. their bibles

  394. that's their

  395. life

  396. but they refuse

  397. to recognize

  398. jesus as worthy

  399. they reject

  400. his claims

  401. and they would

  402. actually rebuke

  403. jesus the son

  404. of god

  405. and jesus responds

  406. verse 40

  407. i tell you

  408. if they keep

  409. quiet

  410. the stones

  411. will cry

  412. out

  413. those stones

  414. i have

  415. better

  416. judgment

  417. than the pharisees

  418. jesus saying

  419. those stones

  420. if they had

  421. voice

  422. they would

  423. worship

  424. their creator

  425. but the pharisees

  426. stand there

  427. scowling

  428. they've been

  429. blinded

  430. by pride

  431. they don't

  432. like

  433. that people

  434. are listening

  435. to jesus

  436. and he speaks

  437. with a greater

  438. authority

  439. than them

  440. they've been

  441. blinded

  442. by prejudice

  443. he comes

  444. from an

  445. unimportant

  446. time

  447. from an

  448. unimportant

  449. family

  450. and so

  451. they do

  452. not want

  453. this king

  454. who brings

  455. peace

  456. that brings

  457. us to the

  458. city of

  459. jerusalem

  460. this city

  461. whose name

  462. means city

  463. of peace

  464. we see

  465. that they

  466. too

  467. will by

  468. and large

  469. reject

  470. the king

  471. of peace

  472. and in

  473. verse 41

  474. to 44

  475. jesus does

  476. two things

  477. first

  478. the first thing

  479. we'll consider

  480. is that he

  481. announces

  482. future judgment

  483. verse 43

  484. the days

  485. will come

  486. upon you

  487. when your

  488. enemies

  489. will build

  490. an embankment

  491. against you

  492. and encircle

  493. you

  494. and hem

  495. you in

  496. on every

  497. side

  498. they will

  499. not leave

  500. one stone

  501. on another

  502. future judgment

  503. destruction

  504. of the city

  505. which happens

  506. in ad

  507. 70

  508. just like

  509. in the

  510. old testament

  511. god's

  512. people

  513. they were

  514. in covenant

  515. relationship

  516. with him

  517. and they

  518. were told

  519. if you live

  520. in obedience

  521. to me

  522. if you

  523. honor me

  524. and worship

  525. me

  526. then you'll

  527. enjoy

  528. blessing

  529. but if

  530. not

  531. you will

  532. experience

  533. curse

  534. curse

  535. for turning

  536. their back

  537. on god

  538. and what

  539. we got

  540. here

  541. jesus

  542. knows

  543. here

  544. he is

  545. he is

  546. emmanuel

  547. he is

  548. god

  549. with us

  550. he is

  551. god

  552. actually

  553. with

  554. them

  555. he's

  556. come

  557. down

  558. to love

  559. them

  560. to save

  561. them

  562. to restore

  563. them

  564. but

  565. verse 42

  566. if you

  567. even you

  568. had only

  569. known on

  570. this day

  571. what would

  572. bring you

  573. peace

  574. but now

  575. it's hidden

  576. from your

  577. eyes

  578. they didn't

  579. see

  580. jesus

  581. as the

  582. one

  583. who came

  584. to bring

  585. peace

  586. verse 44

  587. why does

  588. the judgment

  589. come

  590. it comes

  591. because you

  592. did not

  593. recognize

  594. the time

  595. of god's

  596. coming to

  597. you

  598. god came

  599. in the flesh

  600. in the person

  601. of jesus

  602. but the door

  603. was locked

  604. no red

  605. carpet was

  606. laid out

  607. rejection

  608. of the

  609. king

  610. and so

  611. he announces

  612. future

  613. judgment

  614. but he

  615. also

  616. weeps

  617. for them

  618. verse 41

  619. as he

  620. approached

  621. jerusalem

  622. and saw

  623. the city

  624. he wept

  625. over it

  626. and in

  627. this moment

  628. jesus shows

  629. us the

  630. heart of

  631. god

  632. god

  633. declared

  634. i do

  635. not take

  636. delight

  637. in the

  638. death

  639. of the

  640. wicked

  641. here we

  642. find jesus

  643. longing

  644. for them

  645. distressed

  646. that they

  647. would turn

  648. their back

  649. on their

  650. creator

  651. and their

  652. savior

  653. he doesn't

  654. gloat over

  655. his enemies

  656. who will

  657. gladly conspire

  658. to judge

  659. him falsely

  660. and to put

  661. him to

  662. death

  663. rather

  664. he is the

  665. savior who

  666. weeps

  667. and it

  668. reminds us

  669. of the

  670. tragedy

  671. of their

  672. response to

  673. jesus

  674. the scandal

  675. of their

  676. response to

  677. jesus

  678. as god's

  679. king and

  680. god's

  681. savior is

  682. rejected

  683. so the

  684. journey of

  685. king jesus

  686. because it's

  687. so public

  688. is deliberately

  689. calling for

  690. response and

  691. so today

  692. this journey

  693. of jesus is

  694. calling for

  695. our response

  696. jesus rides

  697. on a donkey

  698. and that donkey

  699. helps us to

  700. appreciate more

  701. of the gospel

  702. story here is

  703. jesus coming as

  704. god's humble

  705. king a

  706. servant king

  707. a king who

  708. would bring

  709. peace and

  710. how would

  711. he do

  712. it

  713. by journeying

  714. to jerusalem

  715. by journeying

  716. to the cross

  717. to pay for

  718. sin

  719. to face

  720. our judgment

  721. before rising

  722. again for our

  723. justification and

  724. to give us

  725. eternal life

  726. what does he

  727. invite us to do

  728. he invites us to

  729. put our faith

  730. in him

  731. to trust in him

  732. that we might

  733. have peace

  734. with god

  735. and in that

  736. journey as we've

  737. considered it

  738. he's calling

  739. each one of us

  740. to decide

  741. which side

  742. am i on

  743. in this story

  744. in this response

  745. to jesus

  746. am i rejoicing

  747. over jesus

  748. today

  749. or am i

  750. rejecting his

  751. rule and

  752. authority today

  753. in part invites

  754. us to decide

  755. on his identity

  756. do i today

  757. think that jesus

  758. is god's son

  759. and god's king

  760. who brings peace

  761. and salvation

  762. or do i not

  763. and how we

  764. respond to that

  765. will then

  766. probably determine

  767. how we respond

  768. to following him

  769. or not

  770. his identity

  771. and his mission

  772. matters

  773. life and death

  774. matters

  775. as luke records

  776. this for us

  777. in his gospel

  778. he's inviting us

  779. to heed the

  780. warnings that we

  781. find here

  782. i think we see

  783. at least three

  784. warnings

  785. one

  786. a reminder

  787. and a warning

  788. it's not enough

  789. to just be

  790. around jesus

  791. it's not enough

  792. just to be

  793. around his

  794. church

  795. we need to

  796. personally respond

  797. in repentance

  798. and faith

  799. and we can say

  800. this because

  801. these many in

  802. this crowd

  803. who are so

  804. joyfully it

  805. seems welcoming

  806. jesus will

  807. in the next

  808. week be crying

  809. crucify him

  810. crucify him

  811. caught up in a

  812. moment but their

  813. hearts were unchanged

  814. it's not enough

  815. to just be

  816. comfy

  817. to be in church

  818. and to be around

  819. god's people

  820. and to enjoy

  821. singing songs

  822. and to find

  823. friendship

  824. we need to

  825. find friendship

  826. with jesus

  827. it's also a

  828. warning to

  829. beware

  830. that same

  831. pride and

  832. prejudice in

  833. the pharisee's

  834. heart can rest

  835. in our hearts

  836. too

  837. perhaps when we

  838. think that

  839. we're fundamentally

  840. good and so

  841. we're okay with

  842. god regardless

  843. of whether we

  844. trust in jesus

  845. perhaps it's in

  846. failing to see

  847. peace with god

  848. as our greatest

  849. needs we have

  850. other things on

  851. our agenda

  852. rather than

  853. getting right

  854. with god

  855. perhaps it's

  856. failing to see

  857. sin as our

  858. deepest and

  859. most serious

  860. problem

  861. perhaps it's

  862. simply failing to

  863. take jesus

  864. seriously

  865. to write him

  866. off as not

  867. being worthy

  868. of consideration

  869. i think the

  870. third and in

  871. many ways the

  872. most solemn

  873. warning that we

  874. find in luke's

  875. gospel from

  876. jesus is a

  877. pointer to the

  878. reality of

  879. future judgment

  880. what happens to

  881. jerusalem is a

  882. foreshadowing of

  883. future judgment

  884. which is real

  885. which is inevitable

  886. which is painful

  887. and which is

  888. tragic for all

  889. who would choose

  890. to reject

  891. jesus as king

  892. jesus the most

  893. loving man who

  894. ever lived spoke

  895. about the

  896. judgment of god

  897. and the reality

  898. of hell more

  899. than anyone else

  900. in the bible

  901. it's so important

  902. for us to find

  903. peace with god

  904. through jesus and

  905. to do that

  906. today

  907. so there are

  908. warnings for us

  909. to respond to

  910. but we're also

  911. invited to rest

  912. and to rejoice

  913. peace in god's

  914. promises

  915. in god's

  916. peace

  917. and it's

  918. wonderful you

  919. think about

  920. the contrast

  921. with perhaps

  922. the fragile

  923. peace that we

  924. feel in our

  925. own relationships

  926. or in our own

  927. hearts so often

  928. in contrast to

  929. the struggle

  930. and the failures

  931. to find lasting

  932. peace in the

  933. political realm

  934. we need to

  935. recognize that

  936. jesus has

  937. secured

  938. for his

  939. people

  940. peace with

  941. god

  942. through his

  943. blood

  944. that is a

  945. finished work

  946. our faith

  947. rests in

  948. past

  949. completed

  950. actions of

  951. the lord

  952. jesus

  953. and they mean

  954. peace with

  955. us

  956. peace for

  957. us

  958. for now

  959. and for

  960. eternity

  961. but it's

  962. not just

  963. about the

  964. past

  965. think about

  966. what difference

  967. the work of

  968. jesus makes

  969. to our

  970. present

  971. we're gonna

  972. have peace

  973. in our

  974. hearts

  975. today

  976. and think

  977. about the

  978. transforming

  979. power of

  980. that as we

  981. receive grace

  982. and mercy

  983. day by day

  984. as the people

  985. of god

  986. as we know

  987. we have been

  988. forgiven by

  989. god's grace

  990. doesn't that

  991. give us the

  992. capacity

  993. to bring

  994. healing in

  995. our own

  996. relationships

  997. to pursue

  998. reconciliation

  999. and to live

  1000. with hope

  1001. and perhaps

  1002. that's the

  1003. last great

  1004. promise

  1005. is the

  1006. hope of

  1007. future

  1008. peace

  1009. so here

  1010. luke invites

  1011. us into

  1012. this royal

  1013. procession

  1014. which in

  1015. some ways

  1016. is a very

  1017. humble

  1018. procession

  1019. as jesus

  1020. rides on

  1021. a donkey

  1022. but we

  1023. have the

  1024. promise

  1025. that when

  1026. jesus

  1027. returns

  1028. things are

  1029. going to

  1030. be very

  1031. different

  1032. there'll be

  1033. an infinitely

  1034. more glorious

  1035. royal procession

  1036. to come

  1037. jesus will

  1038. return

  1039. as king

  1040. of kings

  1041. and he

  1042. will lead

  1043. his people

  1044. those who

  1045. put their

  1046. faith in him

  1047. he'll lead

  1048. his people

  1049. into the

  1050. new jerusalem

  1051. the new

  1052. creation

  1053. a place of

  1054. perfect

  1055. eternal

  1056. lasting

  1057. peace

  1058. that's our

  1059. hope

  1060. the king of

  1061. peace is our

  1062. hope in life

  1063. and in death

  1064. so as we

  1065. finish what's

  1066. our response

  1067. today

  1068. will we

  1069. reject

  1070. jesus

  1071. or will

  1072. we receive

  1073. him

  1074. and rejoice

  1075. in him

  1076. let's pray

  1077. together

  1078. lord god

  1079. we ask

  1080. that in

  1081. your mercy

  1082. and by

  1083. your spirit

  1084. you would

  1085. give to

  1086. each one

  1087. of us

  1088. a clear

  1089. vision

  1090. of who

  1091. jesus is

  1092. to see him

  1093. as your son

  1094. to see him

  1095. as your

  1096. promised king

  1097. to see him

  1098. as the one

  1099. who came to

  1100. seek and to

  1101. save the lost

  1102. who came to

  1103. lay down his

  1104. life for

  1105. sin and for

  1106. sinners

  1107. so that by

  1108. faith in jesus

  1109. by trusting

  1110. in him

  1111. by turning

  1112. away from

  1113. our sin

  1114. and turning

  1115. to jesus

  1116. we might

  1117. have peace

  1118. with you

  1119. we might be

  1120. reconciled to

  1121. you

  1122. indeed we

  1123. might be

  1124. adopted

  1125. into your

  1126. family

  1127. help us to

  1128. see the

  1129. significance of

  1130. who jesus

  1131. is

  1132. and to

  1133. understand

  1134. what jesus

  1135. did

  1136. that in

  1137. dying on

  1138. the cross

  1139. in giving

  1140. his blood

  1141. as the

  1142. new covenant

  1143. he made

  1144. a way

  1145. for sinful

  1146. people like

  1147. us to be

  1148. restored

  1149. to fellowship

  1150. to relationship

  1151. with you

  1152. a holy

  1153. god

  1154. help us

  1155. not to

  1156. take that

  1157. for granted

  1158. help us

  1159. not to

  1160. become

  1161. complacent

  1162. about that

  1163. for those

  1164. of us

  1165. who are

  1166. christians

  1167. may that

  1168. always be

  1169. the foundation

  1170. of our

  1171. hope

  1172. and lord

  1173. for those

  1174. who are

  1175. not christians

  1176. may you

  1177. give them

  1178. eyes to

  1179. see the

  1180. beauty

  1181. of the

  1182. salvation

  1183. that is

  1184. found in

  1185. jesus

  1186. lord we

  1187. pray today

  1188. for our

  1189. family and

  1190. friends

  1191. who won't

  1192. be in

  1193. church today

  1194. who won't

  1195. be worshipping

  1196. you today

  1197. whose hearts

  1198. are far

  1199. from you

  1200. lord we

  1201. pray for

  1202. our city

  1203. and our

  1204. nation

  1205. and the

  1206. nations of

  1207. the world

  1208. lord as

  1209. jesus came

  1210. as the

  1211. king of

  1212. peace

  1213. extending

  1214. his

  1215. rule

  1216. to all

  1217. nations

  1218. authority

  1219. over all

  1220. peoples

  1221. may there

  1222. be many

  1223. even

  1224. today

  1225. who would

  1226. turn

  1227. to trust

  1228. in jesus

  1229. to recognize

  1230. the wonderful

  1231. free gift

  1232. of salvation

  1233. found in

  1234. him

  1235. lord may you

  1236. renew

  1237. and revive

  1238. may you

  1239. awaken

  1240. spiritual

  1241. interest

  1242. and lord

  1243. help us

  1244. who are

  1245. your people

  1246. to be good

  1247. witnesses

  1248. for you

  1249. to be

  1250. faithful in

  1251. the way

  1252. that we

  1253. live

  1254. and the way

  1255. that we

  1256. speak

  1257. so that we

  1258. might point

  1259. others to

  1260. the hope

  1261. that we

  1262. have come

  1263. to find

  1264. for ourselves

  1265. lord as

  1266. we're invited

  1267. to pray

  1268. for one

  1269. another

  1270. we remember

  1271. different

  1272. churches

  1273. across the

  1274. country

  1275. we remember

  1276. this week

  1277. galspy

  1278. up in the

  1279. north

  1280. we thank

  1281. you for

  1282. preserving
