  1. So this evening, from the book of Acts, we're thinking about this truth, that a healthy church

  2. is a praying church. And we're going to look at various texts in the book of Acts

  3. in a few moments to see that, but it's important for us to remember that prayer changes the world.

  4. That's how Doug Kelly begins his really helpful book on prayer. He says,

  5. A prayer makes good things happen because it gets God's will done and thus brings down his best

  6. blessings. We pray your kingdom come, your will be done. James O. Fraser, a famous missionary in

  7. southwest China to the Lizu people, said, it will only be known on the last day how much has been

  8. accomplished in missions by the prayers of earnest believers at home. Echoing what people in church

  9. history and mission history have said, that prayer is the work of mission. J.D. Greer, in his recent

  10. book, Just Ask, which I know some of us have been reading, he says, prayer is a preordained way

  11. that God has appointed for executing his will on earth. He goes on to say, we were saved to pray.

  12. God's design is that his people's prayers be instruments achieving his purposes. That's the way God has

  13. wired the world. So since all those things are true, prayer changes the world, prayer changes mission,

  14. prayer is designed by God to achieve his purpose, then we need to ask ourselves the question, why

  15. do we struggle to pray? Why don't we pray? Perhaps a moment of honesty, I would have us say, well,

  16. often it's because we're busy. Perhaps we'd say, well, often it just seems really ordinary, or I find it

  17. really awkward. Maybe we would say, well, I pray and nothing seems to change, I kind of give up. Or I don't

  18. seem to change, so it seems pointless. If prayer is the oxygen of the soul, do we find

  19. ourselves tonight as Christians and as a local church gasping for breath? Are we lacking power

  20. because we are not praying? The Bible reminds us over and over that our efforts, even our good

  21. efforts at serving God without prayer and without the Holy Spirit will serve no effect.

  22. A healthy church is a praying church. But we struggle with prayer. The church struggles with

  23. prayer. So to counter our struggles, in part, I want to remind us from the book of Acts of the vital

  24. place of prayer in the church from the beginning, and also to remind us of stories from God's Word and

  25. church history to encourage us about the value of prayer, the priority of prayer, so that we would

  26. pray, that we'd pray together, that we'd be praying often. Spurgeon, the great preacher, said,

  27. asking is the rule of the kingdom, so that we've learned to ask boldly because we understand

  28. that God has made us to pray for his kingdom to come. So the first section of God's Word we're

  29. going to look at tonight is from Acts chapter 1, verses 6 to 14, and our big point that we're going

    Acts 1:6–14

  30. to see is that a healthy church is united in prayer. So Acts chapter 1, this is just as Jesus is about to

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  31. depart. Then they gathered round him, so that's the eleven disciples around Jesus, and asked him,

  32. Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel? He said to them, it is not for

  33. you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority, but you will receive power when

  34. the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria

  35. and to the ends of the earth. After he had said this, he was taken up before their very eyes,

  36. and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going,

  37. when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. Men of Galilee, they said, why do you stand

  38. here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in

  39. the same way you have seen him go into heaven. Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill

  40. called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath-stay's walk from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to

  41. the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas,

  42. Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.

  43. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus,

  44. and with his brothers. So that's their pattern as they are waiting for the Spirit. And then

  45. Acts chapter 2, verse 42, after Peter's sermon at Pentecost, after the Spirit has come to the church,

    Acts 2:42

  46. we read, they devoted themselves to the following things, to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship,

  47. to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. So a healthy church is united in prayer, and we see that

  48. because that's the pattern from the beginning. So here's the apostles, and the apostles are appointed

  49. by Jesus as witnesses to Christ. And Jesus has told them, and they know that they need the Spirit.

  50. And Jesus said to them, the Spirit will help you to remember all that I taught.

  51. And Jesus said to them, the Spirit will help you to speak when you find yourself having to

  52. bear witness for Jesus, even in the face of opposition. And the Spirit within them would

  53. cause them to seek the glory of Jesus, because that's what the Spirit wants, for Jesus to be

  54. glorified. So their first task, in verse 4, is to wait for the gift my Father promised.

  55. To wait for the gift of the Spirit before beginning the mission of Jesus, continuing the mission of Jesus

  56. in the world. And so we find them waiting, we find them seeing Jesus ascend, and then they return

  57. back to the city as they were commanded. And in verse 13 and 14, we meet this church, and they're a church

  58. who are praying together, and they're a mixed group, aren't they? So the apostles are there, the 11 disciples,

  59. with the exception of Judas, are there. And we find that women are there gathering to pray.

  60. We find a special mention of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and also the brothers of Jesus. So sceptical

  61. of him, before meeting the risen Lord Jesus, now they're believers in him as Lord, God, and Savior.

  62. And what does it say? They all join together constantly in prayer. So the beginning of church life

  63. was marked by seasons of united prayer. There is togetherness. They are in one place, and they have one heart.

  64. This isn't a one-off thing. This is something they're doing constantly, because they are aware

  65. of the size of their task. Jesus has left.

  66. They need to continue the mission of Jesus. They need to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth.

  67. By their preaching and teaching, by the life that they live together, they'll be drawing people into

  68. the kingdom of God. They are representing Jesus, and they know they need the Spirit, and they know

  69. they need prayer. And then after Pentecost, the first church, so these 3,000 people who are converted by

  70. Peter's sermon, what does it say about them? It says they, 242, are devoted to prayer.

  71. Here's how they express their fellowship. Here's how they express their worship in meeting together

  72. to pray. Sometimes they would do that in a formal setting. So chapter 3, verse 1, we read,

  73. one day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer, at three in the afternoon.

  74. So as every Jewish person in the vicinity would gather to pray, so these first Christians would

  75. gather to pray. Their prayers are different, because Jesus said, we call God Father. But other times,

  76. their prayers were informal. In their house meetings, they were still devoted to prayer. So at all times,

  77. formal, informal, this is a church united and devoted to prayer. And that makes sense.

  78. The apostles had been with Jesus. Jesus, the ultimate man of prayer. Remember, they asked Jesus,

  79. teach us to pray. They heard Jesus teach. When you pray, say this. Not if you pray.

  80. Followers of Jesus pray. Instinct. They heard Jesus invite them to call God Father. They know they have

  81. this wonderful new relationship. And so these brothers and sisters prayed together for the Spirit

  82. in order that they would be witnesses. Now let's just pause for breath for a moment.

  83. What connects the Lewis revivals of the 1940s and 50s? There's Duncan Campbell up there. Perhaps some

  84. of us have read the account of the Lewis revivals. Perhaps some of us have heard the stories firsthand.

  85. What connects the Lewis revivals with the growth of the church in Korea?

  86. So we're really used to seeing Koreans come to study and to come to church and we hear about

  87. Korean fellowships. In 1900, only 1% of Korea was Christian. 2000, 29%.

  88. What accounts for the revival, what accounts for the growth of church?

  89. Church is prayer. God answers prayer. We can think about that from God's Word. Perhaps one of the most

  90. fascinating accounts is when we find Moses in the Old Testament pleading for sinful Israel

  91. after they made and began worshipping before the golden calf. And God comes to Moses and says,

  92. these people have rebelled. And do you know what? I'm going to start again with you. And what's

  93. God doing? He's inviting Moses to stand in the gap, to be an intercessor, to mediate for the people,

  94. to claim the promises of God, to claim the covenant. And he prays and God answers.

  95. Peggy and Christine Smith, two elderly sisters on the island of Lewis, praying God's promises for Lewis.

  96. And God answered and revival came. Prayer is God's means of building the kingdom. And he asks his people

  97. to commit to praying together for his kingdom to come and his will to be done.

  98. And I think the question for us is, do we believe that? And if we do, will we commit to praying

  99. and praying together? So we have lots of different opportunities to pray, whether that's online on a

  100. Monday, whether that's Sunday at five o'clock, whether that's at Wednesdays in community group or centrally.

  101. And do you know, if we understood the importance of prayer, this place would be packed out, wouldn't it?

  102. As we'd be calling on God to work in our church and in our city.

  103. It would be a priority for us if we remind ourselves that healthy church is united in prayer

  104. and our prayers change the world. So us praying together is vital to God's work in our community

  105. and it's vital for us knowing God's power as a church.

  106. Will we commit to praying together?

  107. So a healthy church is united in prayer. In a way, building on what we said last week,

  108. a healthy church supports preaching with prayer. That's the second thing I want us to notice,

  109. and that's from Acts chapter 4. So Acts 3 and 4, in a one long narrative, you find Peter and John,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  110. and Peter heals a lame beggar. And this gets the attention of the Sanhedrin, and they eventually

  111. end up being arrested and they're told to stop speaking about Jesus. Chapter 4.

  112. They're then let out and we find the disciples on their release, Peter and John, coming back to the

  113. church. So Acts chapter 4, verse 23 to 31. On their release, Peter and John went back to their own

    Acts 4:23–31

  114. people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. When they heard this,

  115. they raised their voices together in prayer to God. Sovereign Lord, they said, you made the heavens

  116. and the earth and the sea and everything in them. You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your

  117. servant, our father David. Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth

  118. rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one.

  119. Psalm 2. Indeed, Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel

  120. in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed. They did what your power

  121. and will had decided beforehand should happen. Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your

  122. servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and

  123. wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus. After they prayed, the place where they were

  124. meeting was shaken and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

  125. So Peter and John are released. They go back to the church and they go back to prayer. This is their

  126. instinct. This is their oxygen. They're in a stressful and a dangerous situation. Just as Jesus faced

  127. persecution, he told his followers they too would face persecution. They are experiencing that in their

  128. arrest and that in their arrest and that becomes for them a reason to pray. First thing they do, though,

  129. is they worship God as they pray. And I think there's a really helpful reminder for us as we

  130. pause. In our anxious times,

  131. when our hearts get all unsettled,

  132. it's an invitation for us to talk to our hearts about our God.

  133. That's where peace comes from. That's where restoration

  134. in the midst of anxiety is going to come from when we talk to our hearts about who

  135. our God is. And that's what they do here.

  136. And again, just as an aside,

  137. we recognize

  138. that these first followers of Jesus, that the way that they pray matches the prayer focus of Jesus.

  139. Concern for the kingdom of God. Concern for the glory of the Father, just as they saw in Jesus,

  140. the Savior. So how do they worship as they pray?

  141. Well, notice that they pray to God, acknowledging him as creator.

  142. Verse 24,

  143. Sovereign Lord, you made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them.

  144. And that's good news. They pray to the one who is in charge.

  145. They pray to the God of revelation.

  146. So as they pray, Psalm 2, they are seeing it fulfilled in their day.

  147. Jesus is God's anointed king,

  148. and the leaders and the nations have conspired against him,

  149. but they are powerless to defeat him and his purposes.

  150. In Psalm 2, God laughs at his enemies.

  151. His victory is certain and sure,

  152. and the resurrection is that demonstration.

  153. And they pray and they worship the God of history.

  154. So in verse 27,

  155. they can recognize Herod and Pontius Pilate meeting together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel,

  156. and they're all conspiring against Jesus, God's holy servant.

  157. But, verse 28,

  158. they did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.

  159. So these evil acts from evil men fulfill God's powerful, loving will to save sinners through the blood of Jesus.

  160. So as they pray, they remember those lessons that they learned from Jesus.

  161. Focus on God first.

  162. The Lord's Prayer,

  163. Hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done.

  164. Because that's a reminder to the church.

  165. It's a reminder to us.

  166. Our God is in heaven.

  167. He does what pleases him.

  168. He is powerful.

  169. He is faithful.

  170. So when we find ourselves with anxious or doubtful hearts,

  171. speak to your heart about God.

  172. But the next thing,

  173. and this is where we're going to focus,

  174. verse 29,

  175. Now, Lord, consider their threats

  176. and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.

  177. Perhaps that surprises us how they finish that sentence.

  178. God, pay attention to the opposition that we are facing,

  179. the persecution that we're experiencing.

  180. We might expect and make it go away.

  181. But that's not how they pray.

  182. Because they heard Jesus say,

  183. persecution and suffering is normal.

  184. So they pray,

  185. please make us bold to preach.

  186. And then in verse 30,

  187. they say,

  188. stretch out your hand to heal

  189. and perform signs and wonders

  190. through the name of your holy servant, Jesus.

  191. In the early church,

  192. those miracles were a sign that these were God's men.

  193. So they're praying,

  194. please set your seal of approval on us.

  195. Please show that you are working,

  196. you are alive,

  197. and you are powerful.

  198. And see how God answered.

  199. After they prayed,

  200. the place where they were meeting was shaken,

  201. and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit

  202. and spoke the word of God boldly.

  203. So they pray as a church.

  204. God answers.

  205. The power of the Holy Spirit comes,

  206. and there is more bold preaching that happens.

  207. The church functions as witnesses of Jesus.

  208. Jesus.

  209. John Chrysostom makes the observation

  210. that the room was shaken,

  211. but these disciples were all the more unshaken.

  212. They pray.

  213. They have prayer support.

  214. They have the Spirit.

  215. It made me think of the story

  216. we've probably,

  217. many of us heard about Spurgeon's church boiler room.

  218. There was one time where some visitors came

  219. to meet the famed preacher

  220. and to see around his church,

  221. and he took them to the huge sanctuary

  222. that could see 5,000 in one sitting.

  223. And then he took them downstairs,

  224. and he said,

  225. well, here is the boiler room.

  226. I imagine they were perhaps curious

  227. as to why he would pay such attention to that.

  228. But when he opened the door,

  229. there was 100 people gathering

  230. to pray before the service

  231. for the preaching of God's Word.

  232. Spurgeon always knew

  233. and was happy to testify,

  234. my people pray for me.

  235. And he understood

  236. that was such a significant part

  237. of his fruitful ministry.

  238. In a different era,

  239. William Carey,

  240. famous as a missionary to India,

  241. he had four lifelong friends,

  242. some of whom were in ministry,

  243. some were Christian friends.

  244. And he said of going to the mission field,

  245. so of using the idea of,

  246. I guess, coal mines in the day,

  247. he said,

  248. I will go down into the pits

  249. if you will hold the ropes.

  250. He was relying on those friends'

  251. steadfast prayer ministry

  252. as he looked to preach the gospel in India.

  253. A healthy church supports preaching

  254. with prayer,

  255. is the pattern we find in the book of Acts.

  256. I was reading this week

  257. about some of the prayers

  258. that the persecuted church

  259. ask for themselves.

  260. And again, it's so striking and humbling.

  261. Just as Peter and John,

  262. they want prayer for boldness

  263. to keep preaching.

  264. So my favorite,

  265. this is one of my favorite stories of all time,

  266. but my favorite story this week

  267. from the persecuted church,

  268. from an evangelist

  269. a number of years ago in China

  270. called Wang Mingdao,

  271. who found himself imprisoned

  272. for his faith.

  273. And the church was praying for him.

  274. And so he was downhearted.

  275. He's in prison.

  276. He's an evangelist.

  277. He loves to tell people about Jesus,

  278. but there's nobody else in his cell.

  279. So what is he going to do?

  280. He has a brainwave.

  281. He realizes,

  282. this could be a ministry for some of us,

  283. if he preaches down his toilet,

  284. then the sound will carry along the pipes.

  285. And so he begins

  286. a wonderful gospel toilet bowl ministry,

  287. and he discovers months later

  288. that 96 people were converted

  289. by those sermons.

  290. The church prayed to support his preaching,

  291. and he preached in a novel way,

  292. and God worked and was glorified.

  293. Last week we said a healthy church

  294. is committed to proclaiming God's Word.

  295. That's a Sunday by Sunday pulpit thing,

  296. but that's an everyday witness

  297. from the people of God thing as well.

  298. And that needs us to pray,

  299. to pray for me and whoever's preaching,

  300. but to pray for one another,

  301. that we'd have wisdom and boldness

  302. as we look to share our faith.

  303. So again,

  304. as we think about this principle

  305. and as we look to apply it,

  306. will we commit together

  307. to make time to pray

  308. for Sunday services

  309. and for daily conversations

  310. and for global mission

  311. and for those who desperately need to hear?

  312. So think about William Carey's image.

  313. There are people all over the world

  314. going down into the pits,

  315. engaging in gospel ministry.

  316. Will we hold the ropes for them

  317. by faithfully praying?

  318. A healthy church supports preaching with prayer.

  319. And the last thing I want to say

  320. is that a healthy church

  321. seeks spiritual protection in prayer.

  322. And this takes us to Paul's farewell

  323. to the Ephesian elders.

  324. So Acts chapter 20,

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  325. and we're going to read from verse 25 to 36.

  326. Now, so Paul gathers these elders.

  327. He's been with them for three years.

  328. He's been in the region

  329. for seven or eight years or so.

  330. Now he's returning to Jerusalem

  331. and he loves this church

  332. and he shows it in his prayerful concern.

  333. So let's read Acts 20 from verse 25.

  334. Now I know that none of you

  335. among whom I have gone about

  336. preaching the kingdom

  337. will ever see me again.

  338. Therefore, I declare to you today

  339. that I am innocent of the blood of any of you.

  340. For I have not hesitated

  341. to proclaim to you the whole will of God.

  342. Keep watch over yourselves

  343. and all the flock of which

  344. the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.

  345. Be shepherds of the church of God,

  346. which he bought with his own blood.

  347. I know that after I leave,

  348. savage wolves will come in among you

  349. and will not spare the flock.

  350. Even from your own number,

  351. men will arise and distort the truth

  352. in order to draw away disciples after them.

  353. So be on your guard.

  354. Remember that for three years,

  355. I never stopped warning each of you

  356. night and day with tears.

  357. Now, I commit you to God

  358. and to the word of his grace,

  359. which can build you up

  360. and give you an inheritance

  361. among all those who are sanctified.

  362. I have not coveted anyone's silver

  363. or gold or clothing.

  364. You yourselves know

  365. that these hands of mine

  366. have supplied my own needs

  367. and the needs of my companions.

  368. In everything I did,

  369. I showed you that by this kind of hard work

  370. we must help the weak.

  371. Remembering the words

  372. the Lord Jesus himself said,

  373. it is more blessed to give

  374. than to receive.

  375. When Paul had finished speaking,

  376. he knelt down with all of them

  377. and prayed.

  378. So in verse 25 to 27,

  379. we have that testimony

  380. that he has faithfully preached

  381. the whole will of God

  382. among them.

  383. He says,

  384. I'm innocent of

  385. the blood of anyone.

  386. It's the language of Ezekiel.

  387. He sounded a warning.

  388. The warning of sin,

  389. the warning of God's judgment.

  390. He also announced

  391. the good news of salvation

  392. through faith in Jesus.

  393. And then he gives instruction

  394. to the elders.

  395. Did you notice it?

  396. Keep watch.

  397. Be shepherds.

  398. Be on guard.

  399. Using that powerful

  400. biblical image

  401. of sheep and shepherds.

  402. They are to be shepherds

  403. over the flock,

  404. aware, Paul is aware,

  405. that they need to be on guard

  406. from wolves.

  407. They need to be guarding the truth.

  408. There will be threats

  409. from within the church.

  410. There will be threats

  411. from outside the church.

  412. And so no doubt,

  413. as Paul brings this message,

  414. he anticipates

  415. that this will,

  416. at very least,

  417. lead them to pray

  418. for the church

  419. and its protection.

  420. Paul won't be there

  421. to act as shepherd any longer.

  422. So what can he do?

  423. What does he do?

  424. In verse 32,

  425. we see him pray.

  426. It says there,

  427. Now I commit you to God

  428. and to the word

  429. of his grace.

  430. Committing them to God,

  431. the good and true shepherd.

  432. Committing them to the word

  433. of grace,

  434. that word that's saved,

  435. that word that is building

  436. them in faith,

  437. that word that will,

  438. if they persevere in it,

  439. give assurance

  440. of future inheritance.

  441. He prays,

  442. commits them to God

  443. and to the word of God.

  444. And you read the letter

  445. of Ephesians,

  446. and you see Paul's

  447. consistent pattern

  448. of praying

  449. for this church

  450. that he loves

  451. and seeking their

  452. spiritual good.

  453. But he is aware

  454. of the danger

  455. and of their need

  456. of spiritual protection.

  457. It says,

  458. Jesus taught

  459. in the Lord's Prayer,

  460. lead us not into temptation,

  461. internal sinful desires.

  462. Deliver us from evil,

  463. external pressures

  464. and temptations.

  465. Paul shows us,

  466. it says,

  467. Jesus shows us

  468. that we are to seek

  469. the spiritual health

  470. and protection

  471. of the church

  472. as we pray,

  473. as we pray

  474. for one another.

  475. John Knox,

  476. church history,

  477. gives us a powerful

  478. example of this.

  479. As he was dying,

  480. these words of his

  481. are recorded.

  482. He said,

  483. I have been in meditation

  484. these last two nights

  485. upon the troubled

  486. kirk of God,

  487. the church of God,

  488. despised of the world

  489. but precious

  490. in his sight,

  491. and have called

  492. to God for it

  493. and commended it

  494. to Christ,

  495. her head.

  496. A similar language

  497. as Paul used.

  498. I have been fighting

  499. against Satan

  500. who is ever ready

  501. to assault.

  502. I have fought

  503. against spiritual

  504. wickednesses

  505. and have prevailed.

  506. John Knox,

  507. fighting until his

  508. last breath

  509. for the spiritual

  510. health and protection

  511. of the church

  512. in this country.

  513. Paul knew.

  514. Knox knew.

  515. Prayer is necessary

  516. to keep the church

  517. strong,

  518. to keep the church

  519. pure,

  520. so that the gospel

  521. will be effective

  522. in bringing many

  523. to salvation.

  524. So again,

  525. as we think about

  526. our own prayers,

  527. will we commit

  528. as we pray

  529. to pray

  530. for spiritual health,

  531. to pray protection

  532. over our local church,

  533. indeed,

  534. over our

  535. denomination

  536. as well.

  537. Book of Acts

  538. tells us

  539. in so many places

  540. a healthy church

  541. is a praying church.

  542. The Norwegian

  543. theologian

  544. Halsby,

  545. he says,

  546. the essence

  547. of prayer

  548. is opening

  549. the door

  550. of our lives

  551. to the risen

  552. Christ.

  553. Prayer is

  554. asking him

  555. to come into

  556. our human

  557. situation

  558. with his

  559. resurrection

  560. power.

  561. again,

  562. what a wonderful

  563. motivation

  564. to pray,

  565. to know the

  566. resurrection power

  567. of the Lord Jesus

  568. in our own lives,

  569. in the life

  570. of our church,

  571. in the life

  572. of our city.

  573. We pray

  574. because Jesus

  575. loves his church.

  576. We pray

  577. because Jesus

  578. bought his bride

  579. with his own

  580. precious blood.

  581. We pray

  582. because Jesus,

  583. the good shepherd,

  584. is seeking

  585. after calling

  586. other lost

  587. sheep to

  588. himself.

  589. And we pray

  590. because Jesus

  591. works through

  592. his church

  593. and through

  594. our prayers.

  595. Absolutely,

  596. yes,

  597. through our

  598. witness,

  599. but absolutely,

  600. yes,

  601. through our

  602. prayers

  603. to build

  604. his kingdom.

  605. So,

  606. the question

  607. for each

  608. one of us

  609. and the question

  610. we always need

  611. to ask of

  612. ourselves

  613. as a local

  614. church is,

  615. am I committed

  616. to prayer?

  617. And will we

  618. commit to

  619. praying together

  620. for God's

  621. kingdom to

  622. come,

  623. for God's

  624. will to be

  625. done

  626. on earth

  627. as it is

  628. in heaven?

  629. Let's

  630. pray

  631. briefly

  632. now.

  633. Lord God,

  634. thank you for

  635. the wonderful

  636. book of Acts

  637. and for the

  638. way that we

  639. can look

  640. through its

  641. pages

  642. and see

  643. how often

  644. your people

  645. found themselves

  646. praying,

  647. how essential

  648. and vital

  649. and basic

  650. it was

  651. to their

  652. spiritual life.

  653. Lord,

  654. we confess

  655. as a church

  656. and as individuals

  657. often we lack

  658. motivation to

  659. pray.

  660. Often we

  661. don't make

  662. time to

  663. pray.

  664. Often we'd

  665. rather do

  666. anything but

  667. pray.

  668. But Lord,

  669. we ask that

  670. by your

  671. spirit you

  672. would remind

  673. us of

  674. your purpose

  675. in prayer,

  676. of the

  677. privilege and

  678. priority of

  679. prayer,

  680. so that you

  681. might draw us

  682. to your throne

  683. of grace

  684. often,

  685. that you

  686. would draw

  687. us together

  688. to your throne

  689. of grace,

  690. that we

  691. would be a

  692. church united

  693. in our

  694. devotion to

  695. prayer,

  696. that we

  697. would be

  698. supporting

  699. gospel work

  700. at home

  701. and abroad

  702. in prayer,

  703. that we

  704. would be

  705. seeking the

  706. spiritual

  707. good and

  708. welfare of

  709. your church

  710. as we

  711. pray.

  712. Lord,

  713. all of us

  714. will need

  715. to make

  716. changes in

  717. order to

  718. respond.

  719. Give us

  720. wisdom to

  721. know how

  722. to make

  723. prayer a

  724. priority.

  725. Give us

  726. wisdom as

  727. church leaders

  728. to know

  729. how to

  730. keep

  731. prayer as

  732. a priority

  733. for us as

  734. a local

  735. church.

  736. Lord,

  737. without you

  738. we can do

  739. nothing.

  740. Without you

  741. we are

  742. lost.

  743. Teach us

  744. to pray.

  745. Amen.
