  1. children, you are welcome to go out to the hall and you can enjoy a holiday junior church all

  2. together. For the rest of us, we can turn in God's word to the gospel of Luke chapter 23,

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  3. and we are going to read from verse 26 to 49.

  4. And the words will be up on our screen if you don't have a copy of the Bible on your phone or in paper form.

  5. Luke chapter 23, let's hear the word of God.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  6. As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country,

  7. and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. A large number of people followed

  8. him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned and said to them,

  9. Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep for yourselves and for your children.

  10. For the time will come when you will say, Bless to the childless women, the wombs that never bore and

  11. the breasts that never nursed. Then they will say to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills,

  12. cover us. For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?

  13. Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the

  14. place called the Skull, they crucified him there along with the criminals, one on his right,

  15. the other on his left. Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

  16. And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. The people stood watching,

  17. and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, He saved others. Let him save himself,

  18. if he is God's Messiah, the chosen one. The soldiers also came up and mocked him.

  19. They offered him wine vinegar and said, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.

  20. There was a written notice above him which read, This is the king of the Jews.

  21. One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him, Aren't you the Messiah?

  22. Save yourself on us. But the other criminal rebuked him. Don't you fear God, he said,

  23. since you are under the same sentence. We are punished justly, for we are getting what our

  24. deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong. Then he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into

  25. your kingdom. Jesus answered him, Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.

  26. It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,

  27. for the sun stopped shining, and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with

  28. a loud voice, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. When he had said this, he breathed his last.

  29. The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, Surely this was a righteous man.

  30. When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their

  31. breasts and went away. But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from

  32. Galilee, stood at a distance watching these things. Amen. And before we turn back to look at that

  33. section of God's Word, we're going to sing two sections of Psalm 22. And again, like Isaiah 53,

  34. we're going to hear prophecies of the sufferings of the Lord Jesus as Savior. So let's stand and let's sing

  35. from Psalm 22.

  36. Psalm 22.

  37. Psalm 22.

  38. Psalm 22.

  39. Psalm 22.

  40. Psalm 22.

  41. Psalm 22.

  42. Psalm 22.

  43. Psalm 22.

  44. Psalm 22.

  45. Psalm 22.

  46. Psalm 22.

  47. .

  48. .

  49. throw the dice to get my coat, among themselves my clothes they share.

  50. Come quickly, rescue me, my strength, to not be far from me, O Lord.

  51. Save me from power of evil docks, my precious life from cruel sword.

  52. Now to my brothers I'll declare the praises of your glorious name.

  53. Within their gathering I will stand, and your renown I will proclaim.

  54. Praise Him, all you that fear the Lord. Give honor to Him, Jacob's grace.

  55. All Israel's children, worship Him. Bow down with awe before His face.

  56. Amen.

  57. So as we continue to think about the journey to Easter, we come to the cross.

  58. Our theme is rescue. Our question is what did the cross achieve?

  59. I mentioned earlier this little booklet, Freed But At A Price.

  60. And it tells us of a story that some of us may remember.

  61. A few days before Easter in 2018, in the south of France, there was a hostage situation.

  62. And there was this gendarme, this police officer by the name of Arnold Beltram,

  63. who offered to take the place of the person who was held hostage,

  64. so that negotiations could continue, so that the women might be spared.

  65. Well, Arnold was shot and killed during that hostage situation.

  66. And a number of days later, as the lady, the hostage Julie, was being interviewed,

  67. she said simply, he gave his life for me.

  68. He was killed so I could live.

  69. And in a very real sense, that takes us to the heart of the very first Easter.

  70. It takes us to a world held hostage by the dark side of our nature, by our sin.

  71. And where we have no hope by ourselves of escape, and into that situation came Jesus.

  72. And Jesus' mission, as he described it himself, was to give his life as a ransom for many.

  73. A picture of a slave with no chance of escape, or indeed, of a hostage being held ransom.

  74. And the message of this first Easter is that if we believe in Jesus and what he has done on the cross,

  75. then we also can say, he died for me, so I can truly live.

  76. So as we continue to think with Luke about this journey to the cross, the journey to Jesus' death,

  77. we're going to see together a number of different events,

  78. different interactions and conversations that are going to reveal to us both the work of Christ and the heart of Christ.

  79. Helping us to see and to consider his loving rescue.

  80. And again, as we do that, let's be asking ourselves the question,

  81. what impact will this have on our lives as we think about what Jesus has done?

  82. Let's begin with the theme of substitution and with this man, Simon.

  83. So verse 26, we're introduced to him.

  84. We're told as the soldiers led Jesus away, they seized Simon and they put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.

  85. So behind this event lies the fact that Jesus is now in a severely weakened physical state,

  86. subject to multiple beatings, to cruelty and torture at the hands of the soldiers.

  87. And so he is unable any longer to carry his own cross.

  88. So this man, Simon, from North Africa, from Libya, is commanded then to carry the cross of Jesus to the place of crucifixion.

  89. And now we don't know very much about this man, Simon, but Mark tells us, Mark 15 verse 21,

    Mark 15:21

  90. that he was the father of Alexander and Rufus.

  91. And that can seem kind of an incidental detail, but it also points to the fact that Alexander, Rufus, Simon,

  92. stand as early eyewitnesses to Jesus and to his death on the cross.

  93. And they are included so that people could go and ask questions of them

  94. when Mark's gospel was written some 30 years or so after the death of Jesus.

  95. Well, here is Simon, and he's been commanded to act as a substitute.

  96. He is carrying Jesus' cross to the place of crucifixion.

  97. But if we pan back in the story just a little bit, we recognize that in a far greater sense,

  98. Jesus on this journey is functioning as a substitute for Simon.

  99. And not just for Simon, but for anyone who will believe in him.

  100. Now, why can we say that?

  101. Because here is Jesus, the Son of God, who has become fully human.

  102. Here is Jesus, he is sinless, and he is perfect.

  103. But where is Jesus going?

  104. He's going to the place of the cross so that he would bear the burden of sin,

  105. and he would face the penalty for sin,

  106. that punishment, that penalty that you and I should deserve.

  107. And so the cross becomes God's great exchange.

  108. As we look to the cross, what are we seeing?

  109. We're seeing Jesus, the God-man, experiencing what we deserve.

  110. Separation from God, punishment from God.

  111. And he experiences that why?

  112. So that we might enjoy what he deserves.

  113. Eternal life.

  114. And so this theme of substitution is central to the good news of the cross,

  115. and it's central to the Christian faith.

  116. To think about it another way, let me read for us verse 44 again.

  117. It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,

  118. for the sun stopped shining.

  119. This darkness at midday isn't natural, it's supernatural, it's an act of God.

  120. And what's happening there?

  121. On one hand, Jesus is entering the dark clouds of our human wickedness as he takes sin on himself.

  122. But he's also going into that darkness facing the penalty that sin deserves.

  123. In the Old Testament, darkness is often an image of the judgment of God.

  124. So here is Jesus, because he is bearing our sin, he is also bearing the punishment for sin.

  125. And he's going into the darkness as a substitute for all who will trust in him.

  126. It becomes clear in the cost of salvation that there is only one way to be saved.

  127. There's only one way to forgiveness, otherwise this would never happen to Jesus.

  128. And here, as we think about this theme of substitution, we're being invited to recognize the heart of Jesus.

  129. As he says to a world held hostage by sin and unbelief,

  130. I will die so that you can live and live eternally.

  131. But the cross speaks to us of more than just substitution.

  132. It also speaks to us of mercy.

  133. Mercy in the place of judgment.

  134. And to help us to see that, I want us to think about this conversation between Jesus and the women in verses 27 to 31.

  135. Many of us perhaps are familiar with the stage play Evita and the famous song,

  136. Don't Cry For Me, Argentina.

  137. Well, here is Jesus turning to this crowd, following after him's,

  138. Don't weep for me, women of Jerusalem.

  139. And we have to ask, why not?

  140. Why should they not weep for Jesus?

  141. Let's read again verse 27.

  142. A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.

  143. So we know in that culture, public mourning was a thing.

  144. Here is a group of women who are showing sympathy towards Jesus in his suffering.

  145. But Jesus responds,

  146. Do not weep for me.

  147. Weep for yourselves and for your children.

  148. Jesus is walking to his death and he knows it.

  149. And yet he says to them,

  150. Your weeping is misplaced.

  151. Don't weep for me.

  152. Weep for yourselves and for your children.

  153. Now why can he say that?

  154. Why would he say that?

  155. Let me suggest three answers for us.

  156. One, it's Friday.

  157. It's Good Friday.

  158. But Jesus knows Sunday is coming.

  159. Jesus knows in the plan of God, yes, he will die.

  160. But he will also rise in victory.

  161. And so he says,

  162. Do not weep.

  163. This is not the end of my story.

  164. He says,

  165. Don't weep for me.

  166. Weep for yourselves.

  167. Because he knows another thing is coming.

  168. He knows future judgment is coming.

  169. That's why there's that language in 29 and 30.

  170. The time will come when you will say,

  171. Blessed are the childless women.

  172. Then they will say to the mountains,

  173. Fall on us and to the hills cover us.

  174. It's language that speaks of the coming judgment of God.

  175. Last week we thought about the fact that Jesus came to the city of Jerusalem

  176. and he wept over it because they didn't recognize in his coming,

  177. is God's coming?

  178. Is God's Savior come for them?

  179. They rejected him.

  180. And so judgment would come.

  181. And so here is Jesus giving one last lament for the city,

  182. for those who would turn their back on him.

  183. And say,

  184. Don't weep for me.

  185. Weep for yourselves.

  186. Because judgment is coming because of unbelief.

  187. But he also says,

  188. Don't weep for me.

  189. Weep for yourselves.

  190. Because what Jesus doesn't want is,

  191. He doesn't want their sympathy.

  192. He wants their faith.

  193. He doesn't want tears of sympathy.

  194. He wants tears of repentance.

  195. He wants them to have a change of heart and a change of mind.

  196. To recognize he's not just another figure suffering in agony and humiliation,

  197. but he is the Son of God who has come deliberately to save them.

  198. And so he invites them to cry tears of repentance and to trust in him.

  199. And again,

  200. here is the mercy of Jesus on display for us.

  201. Experiencing a personal agony that we can only begin to imagine.

  202. But he doesn't turn inward to focus on his own suffering.

  203. Rather,

  204. he turns outward on the need for mercy for others.

  205. It's the point of the proverb in verse 31, I think.

  206. For if people do these things when the tree is green,

  207. what will happen when it is dry?

  208. Jesus is saying,

  209. If this,

  210. if the cross is going to happen to me,

  211. how much worse will be what happens to the city who rejects me?

  212. And so he offers a loving warning.

  213. Judgment is coming.

  214. Seek mercy.

  215. When we think about the story of our booklet,

  216. that story of the hostage situation in France,

  217. we find ourselves with so much admiration, don't we,

  218. for the heroic acts of bravery that we hear about and read about.

  219. Where compassion leads to action.

  220. It's what we see with Jesus.

  221. It is Jesus,

  222. the Son of God,

  223. with his heart beating,

  224. full of mercy and love,

  225. and it leads him to act,

  226. willing to come to be one of us,

  227. willing to suffer the judgment of God on our behalf,

  228. willing to display the mercy of God to the world,

  229. so that

  230. you and I don't have to face this future judgment

  231. that Jesus anticipates and promises,

  232. so that we might know mercy.

  233. And so when we think about the cross,

  234. doesn't it call us to admire Jesus

  235. in his loving sacrifice,

  236. to delight in him that he would love me

  237. and give himself for me,

  238. but not just to admire him from a distance,

  239. also to trust him personally.

  240. It makes us ask the question,

  241. will I weep over my own sin?

  242. Will I have true faith and find mercy from Jesus?

  243. That's not all that the cross achieves for us.

  244. We can move to verses 32 to 34

  245. and think about forgiveness.

  246. And here we find Jesus among his enemies.

  247. We discover in verse 32

  248. that two other men, both criminals,

  249. were also led out with him to be executed.

  250. And when they came to the place called the skull,

  251. they crucified him there.

  252. And as he is crucified,

  253. Jesus said,

  254. Father, forgive them,

  255. for they do not know what they are doing.

  256. The last few days of Jesus' life

  257. has seen this conspiracy of evil

  258. gather around Jewish leaders

  259. and Roman officials

  260. looking to execute Jesus.

  261. And now they have achieved their goal.

  262. Here is Jesus hanging on the cross

  263. in public shame.

  264. But what Jesus understands,

  265. that's why Jesus came,

  266. is that this fulfills Scripture.

  267. This fulfills the plan of God.

  268. That's why we began our service in Isaiah 53.

  269. That's why we sang Psalm 22.

  270. Isaiah 53, verse 5,

    Isaiah 53:5

  271. he was pierced for our transgressions.

  272. Verse 12,

  273. he was numbered among the transgressors.

  274. Psalm 22, verse 18,

    Psalms 22:18

  275. they divided my clothes among them.

  276. The Old Testament anticipates

  277. the work of God's anointed king,

  278. that he would be a suffering servant.

  279. And so here is Jesus,

  280. now being nailed to the cross.

  281. And even now we see

  282. his mission of mercy continues.

  283. His blood flows

  284. and prayer flows.

  285. As he says,

  286. Father, forgive them

  287. for they don't know what they are doing.

  288. When we think about the ethics of Jesus,

  289. we think about the famous sermon

  290. on the mount.

  291. Perhaps one of the most challenging statements

  292. Jesus made

  293. is when he called his followers

  294. to love your enemies

  295. and pray for those who persecute you.

  296. Matthew 5, 44.

  297. What do we see in Jesus?

  298. We see in Jesus

  299. one who practiced what he preached.

  300. He taught with authority

  301. and he lived it out.

  302. He was concerned

  303. for these ignorant Jews.

  304. They thought they were getting rid

  305. of a false Messiah.

  306. For these ignorant Romans

  307. who were executing him,

  308. thinking this was just

  309. all in a day's work,

  310. not recognizing the significance

  311. of the one

  312. that was hanging on the cross.

  313. And so he prays

  314. for forgiveness.

  315. You can look in history books

  316. and you can find records

  317. of crucifixions

  318. because Rome used crucifixion

  319. a lot as a show of force

  320. and to sort of put down uprisings.

  321. And those records

  322. are ugly and violent scenes.

  323. You will find records

  324. of people hung on the cross

  325. cursing those who are killing them

  326. and mocking them

  327. and as they die

  328. they're giving as good as they get.

  329. But not Jesus.

  330. That's not his way.

  331. He prays for forgiveness

  332. as he is providing forgiveness.

  333. And this beautiful prayer

  334. is a prayer

  335. that stretches across

  336. space and time.

  337. Perhaps we can think of his half-brothers.

  338. Those half-brothers

  339. who thought that Jesus

  340. was crazy, frankly,

  341. for his claims.

  342. But when Jesus appeared to them

  343. risen from the dead

  344. they became followers.

  345. Their sins were forgiven.

  346. They didn't know

  347. what they were doing.

  348. when you think about Saul

  349. who we know as Paul

  350. the great persecutor

  351. of the early church

  352. hated of Jesus

  353. wanted to destroy the church

  354. when the risen Jesus

  355. appears to him

  356. what happens?

  357. His sin also is forgiven.

  358. He didn't know

  359. what he was doing

  360. in rejecting Jesus.

  361. And you know

  362. this prayer

  363. is a prayer

  364. that's answered

  365. in the heart

  366. and life

  367. of everyone

  368. who is a Christian

  369. who is a follower

  370. of Jesus.

  371. Our sin

  372. is forgiven.

  373. Our ignorant

  374. rejection of Jesus

  375. in our past

  376. is forgiven.

  377. And this is a prayer

  378. that gives each of us

  379. hope if we're not

  380. followers of Jesus.

  381. As we see again

  382. the heart of mercy

  383. that Jesus on the cross

  384. would pray for forgiveness.

  385. This isn't just

  386. for those people

  387. back then.

  388. this mercy

  389. and forgiveness

  390. is available

  391. for you

  392. and for me

  393. today.

  394. If

  395. we see our need

  396. of sins

  397. being forgiven

  398. and if we trust

  399. Jesus

  400. and his work

  401. for salvation

  402. then this prayer

  403. will be answered

  404. in your life too.

  405. What else

  406. does the cross

  407. achieve

  408. as we consider

  409. this story?

  410. Let's think

  411. about salvation

  412. as we think

  413. about the thief

  414. on the cross.

  415. So verse 35

  416. to 43.

  417. But again

  418. if we go back

  419. to our hostage situation

  420. in the south of France

  421. this man

  422. Arnold

  423. he knew

  424. in the way

  425. that only people

  426. in the line of fire

  427. can know

  428. I can only save

  429. this hostage

  430. by not saving myself.

  431. I need to put myself

  432. in the place

  433. of danger

  434. in order

  435. to give

  436. safety

  437. and salvation

  438. to another.

  439. It's one of those

  440. wonderful stories

  441. of courage

  442. and sacrifice.

  443. Sometimes we hear

  444. those stories

  445. of parental love

  446. or we hear it

  447. in the context

  448. of war

  449. at one

  450. sacrificing

  451. themselves

  452. willingly

  453. for the sake

  454. of another

  455. and this is

  456. what we have

  457. in Jesus

  458. he knows

  459. there is

  460. no other way

  461. but we recognize

  462. as we read

  463. our text

  464. that the enemies

  465. of Jesus

  466. are blind

  467. to this truth.

  468. Look at verse 35

  469. here are the

  470. Jewish rulers

  471. who sneer at him

  472. they said he saved

  473. others

  474. let him save himself

  475. if he's God's Messiah

  476. the chosen one

  477. verse 36

  478. the soldiers

  479. they mock him

  480. if you are the king

  481. of the Jews

  482. save yourself

  483. one of the criminals

  484. hanging on a cross

  485. hurled insults

  486. at Jesus

  487. aren't you the Messiah

  488. save yourself

  489. and us

  490. they are blind

  491. to this

  492. truth

  493. that the human

  494. sin problem

  495. is so desperate

  496. that we are so

  497. helpless

  498. in and of

  499. ourselves

  500. we cannot

  501. save ourselves

  502. we cannot escape

  503. the darkness

  504. that separates us

  505. from God

  506. and makes us

  507. liable to the

  508. judgment of God

  509. that we can only

  510. be saved

  511. from the outside

  512. we cannot

  513. make our way

  514. up to God

  515. we need God

  516. to come down

  517. to us

  518. as he's done

  519. in the Lord

  520. Jesus

  521. who saves

  522. by the way

  523. of sacrifice

  524. and so we have

  525. this powerful

  526. reminder

  527. whenever we think

  528. about the cross

  529. that it saves us

  530. from sin

  531. but we're also

  532. reminded in

  533. Luke's gospel

  534. of what we are

  535. saved for

  536. and again

  537. Luke records

  538. and other gospel

  539. writers record

  540. something that

  541. happens in the

  542. temple

  543. as Jesus

  544. is dying

  545. so verse 45

  546. after we discover

  547. that the sun

  548. stopped shining

  549. we hear this

  550. and the curtain

  551. of the temple

  552. was torn

  553. in two

  554. so within

  555. the temple

  556. there was this

  557. location in the

  558. temple called

  559. the Holy of Holies

  560. the place where

  561. God was seen

  562. to dwell

  563. and it was

  564. separated from

  565. the rest

  566. by this huge

  567. curtain

  568. as thick

  569. as a man's

  570. hand

  571. it was a

  572. great big

  573. no entry

  574. sign

  575. saying that

  576. a holy God

  577. cannot be

  578. with sinful

  579. people

  580. or there would

  581. be

  582. destruction

  583. for

  584. people

  585. but as

  586. Jesus

  587. dies

  588. and as

  589. sin

  590. is removed

  591. what happens

  592. the barriers

  593. is torn

  594. into

  595. again another

  596. work of

  597. God

  598. saying to us

  599. in the death

  600. of

  601. Jesus

  602. the way

  603. is open

  604. to know

  605. God

  606. personally

  607. to come

  608. into

  609. God's

  610. presence

  611. presence

  612. and all

  613. because

  614. Jesus

  615. endured

  616. the cross

  617. and took

  618. the darkness

  619. but back

  620. to

  621. our

  622. events

  623. here

  624. and back

  625. to this

  626. thief

  627. on the

  628. cross

  629. verse

  630. 40

  631. we thought

  632. the last

  633. time about

  634. Zacchaeus

  635. a very

  636. unlikely

  637. candidate

  638. for salvation

  639. well here

  640. is one

  641. even less

  642. likely

  643. but what

  644. does he

  645. see

  646. when others

  647. are blind

  648. the other

  649. criminal

  650. rebuked

  651. him

  652. don't you

  653. fear

  654. God

  655. he said

  656. since you

  657. are under

  658. the same

  659. sentence

  660. so he's got

  661. this sense

  662. of fear

  663. this awe

  664. this reverence

  665. I should

  666. be here

  667. but Jesus

  668. he's on

  669. the cross

  670. and this

  671. thief has

  672. so much

  673. to teach

  674. us

  675. it can

  676. teach us

  677. what we

  678. might call

  679. the gospel

  680. ABCs

  681. how to

  682. respond

  683. to the

  684. work of

  685. Jesus

  686. the first

  687. thing that

  688. he teaches

  689. us

  690. is the

  691. importance

  692. of admitting

  693. our guilt

  694. so look at

  695. verse 41

  696. he says

  697. we are

  698. punished

  699. justly

  700. for we

  701. are getting

  702. what are

  703. deeds

  704. deserve

  705. he's not

  706. blame shifting

  707. he's not

  708. downplaying

  709. what he

  710. has done

  711. rather he

  712. acknowledges

  713. I deserve

  714. to be

  715. punished

  716. and for

  717. us

  718. to come

  719. to know

  720. Jesus as

  721. Lord

  722. we need

  723. to apply

  724. this to

  725. our own

  726. sin

  727. and to

  728. admit

  729. our guilt

  730. that we

  731. have on

  732. a daily

  733. basis

  734. treated

  735. God as

  736. insignificant

  737. that we

  738. have

  739. regarded

  740. him as

  741. having

  742. little

  743. worth

  744. that though

  745. he is

  746. our

  747. creator

  748. we have

  749. chosen

  750. to

  751. reject

  752. his

  753. rule

  754. we have

  755. sinned

  756. against him

  757. in thought

  758. and word

  759. and in

  760. deed

  761. and we

  762. need to

  763. admit

  764. that

  765. but we

  766. don't just

  767. stop there

  768. notice that

  769. this criminal

  770. he doesn't

  771. just admit

  772. guilt

  773. he also

  774. believes

  775. who

  776. Jesus

  777. is

  778. there's

  779. wonderful

  780. words

  781. in verse

  782. 41

  783. and 42

  784. he says

  785. of Jesus

  786. this man

  787. has done

  788. nothing

  789. wrong

  790. and then

  791. he said

  792. Jesus

  793. remember me

  794. when you

  795. come into

  796. your kingdom

  797. this man

  798. has done

  799. nothing

  800. wrong

  801. this man

  802. is

  803. sinless

  804. and we

  805. need to

  806. recognize

  807. as we

  808. look at

  809. Jesus

  810. he's

  811. not just

  812. one of

  813. us

  814. he is

  815. the

  816. sinless

  817. son

  818. of

  819. God

  820. and

  821. notice

  822. too

  823. that as

  824. Jesus

  825. is about

  826. to die

  827. this criminal

  828. recognizes

  829. Jesus

  830. is at

  831. the same

  832. time

  833. about

  834. to

  835. enter

  836. into

  837. his

  838. kingdom

  839. so

  840. this

  841. thief

  842. on

  843. the

  844. cross

  845. knows

  846. Jesus

  847. is

  848. God's

  849. eternal

  850. king

  851. and

  852. his

  853. only

  854. hope

  855. of

  856. salvation

  857. and

  858. so

  859. the

  860. Christian

  861. faith

  862. requires

  863. us

  864. to

  865. believe

  866. in

  867. who

  868. Jesus

  869. is

  870. but

  871. again

  872. we

  873. don't

  874. just

  875. stop

  876. there

  877. believing

  878. certain

  879. truths

  880. about

  881. Jesus

  882. we

  883. need

  884. to

  885. come

  886. to

  887. him

  888. come

  889. to

  890. him

  891. for

  892. rescue

  893. so we

  894. find

  895. when the

  896. thief

  897. says

  898. remember

  899. me

  900. Jesus

  901. when you

  902. come into

  903. your

  904. kingdom

  905. not

  906. remember

  907. me

  908. Jesus

  909. act

  910. for

  911. me

  912. Jesus

  913. receive

  914. me

  915. Jesus

  916. as

  917. the

  918. king

  919. will

  920. you

  921. grant

  922. me

  923. eternal

  924. life

  925. it's

  926. a

  927. remarkable

  928. scene

  929. here

  930. is

  931. one

  932. dying

  933. man

  934. turning

  935. to

  936. another

  937. and

  938. says

  939. save

  940. me

  941. here

  942. is

  943. a

  944. cry

  945. of

  946. faith

  947. and

  948. if

  949. his

  950. words

  951. are

  952. beautiful

  953. then

  954. so

  955. too

  956. are

  957. the

  958. words

  959. of

  960. Jesus

  961. let's

  962. think

  963. of

  964. the

  965. response

  966. of

  967. Jesus

  968. and

  969. this

  970. response

  971. in

  972. verse

  973. 43

  974. really

  975. stands

  976. as the

  977. basis

  978. for

  979. Christian

  980. hope

  981. because

  982. we can

  983. discover

  984. a few

  985. things

  986. about

  987. salvation

  988. first

  989. of all

  990. we can

  991. discover

  992. that

  993. when

  994. our

  995. faith

  996. looks

  997. to

  998. Jesus

  999. salvation

  1000. is

  1001. certain

  1002. Jesus

  1003. answered

  1004. him

  1005. truly

  1006. I

  1007. tell

  1008. you

  1009. today

  1010. you

  1011. will

  1012. be

  1013. with

  1014. me

  1015. in

  1016. paradise

  1017. here

  1018. is

  1019. Jesus

  1020. speaking

  1021. with

  1022. the

  1023. authority

  1024. of

  1025. God

  1026. come

  1027. on

  1028. the

  1029. mission

  1030. of

  1031. God

  1032. as

  1033. the

  1034. son

  1035. of

  1036. God

  1037. as

  1038. God

  1039. King

  1040. and

  1041. he

  1042. declares

  1043. salvation

  1044. will

  1045. be

  1046. accomplished

  1047. at

  1048. the

  1049. cross

  1050. and

  1051. if

  1052. you're

  1053. trusting

  1054. me

  1055. you

  1056. will

  1057. be

  1058. with

  1059. me

  1060. salvation

  1061. is

  1062. certain

  1063. when

  1064. we're

  1065. trusting

  1066. in

  1067. Jesus

  1068. we

  1069. also

  1070. discover

  1071. that

  1072. salvation

  1073. is

  1074. personal

  1075. notice

  1076. that

  1077. Jesus

  1078. said

  1079. truly

  1080. I

  1081. tell

  1082. you

  1083. today

  1084. you'll

  1085. be

  1086. with

  1087. me

  1088. now

  1089. there's

  1090. the

  1091. goal

  1092. of

  1093. salvation

  1094. to

  1095. be

  1096. with

  1097. Jesus

  1098. Jesus

  1099. in this

  1100. sense

  1101. goes ahead

  1102. of

  1103. this

  1104. criminal

  1105. Jesus

  1106. is the

  1107. first of

  1108. the

  1109. three

  1110. to

  1111. die

  1112. and

  1113. he

  1114. goes

  1115. ahead

  1116. to

  1117. prepare

  1118. the

  1119. way

  1120. to

  1121. receive

  1122. this

  1123. man

  1124. into

  1125. the

  1126. kingdom

  1127. just

  1128. as

  1129. Jesus

  1130. had

  1131. said

  1132. to

  1133. his

  1134. disciples

  1135. he

  1136. spoke

  1137. about

  1138. heaven

  1139. as

  1140. his

  1141. father's

  1142. house

  1143. said

  1144. in

  1145. my

  1146. father's

  1147. house

  1148. there

  1149. are

  1150. many

  1151. rooms

  1152. and

  1153. I'm

  1154. going

  1155. there

  1156. to

  1157. prepare

  1158. a

  1159. place

  1160. for

  1161. you

  1162. and

  1163. if

  1164. I

  1165. go

  1166. I'll

  1167. also

  1168. come

  1169. back

  1170. and

  1171. take

  1172. you

  1173. to

  1174. be

  1175. with

  1176. me

  1177. that

  1178. you

  1179. may

  1180. be

  1181. where

  1182. I

  1183. am

  1184. that

  1185. salvation

  1186. to be

  1187. in the

  1188. presence

  1189. of

  1190. Jesus

  1191. and

  1192. his

  1193. people

  1194. in a

  1195. world

  1196. made

  1197. perfect

  1198. with

  1199. sin

  1200. removed

  1201. for

  1202. all

  1203. eternity

  1204. we

  1205. also

  1206. get an

  1207. understanding

  1208. that

  1209. salvation

  1210. is

  1211. eternal

  1212. when we

  1213. think

  1214. about

  1215. this

  1216. word

  1217. paradise

  1218. a

  1219. very

  1220. rich

  1221. word

  1222. paradise

  1223. it's

  1224. actually

  1225. a

  1226. Persian

  1227. word

  1228. meaning

  1229. a

  1230. garden

  1231. or

  1232. a

  1233. park

  1234. and

  1235. perhaps

  1236. as we

  1237. think

  1238. about

  1239. that

  1240. we

  1241. go

  1242. back

  1243. to

  1244. the

  1245. very

  1246. first

  1247. garden

  1248. the

  1249. garden

  1250. of

  1251. God

  1252. the

  1253. garden

  1254. of

  1255. Eden

  1256. in

  1257. Genesis

  1258. 1

  1259. and

  1260. 2

  1261. and

  1262. what

  1263. do

  1264. we

  1265. find

  1266. was

  1267. the

  1268. reality

  1269. of

  1270. the

  1271. garden

  1272. of

  1273. Eden

  1274. there's

  1275. God's

  1276. people

  1277. Adam

  1278. and

  1279. Eve

  1280. they're

  1281. living

  1282. in

  1283. God's

  1284. place

  1285. and

  1286. they're

  1287. enjoying

  1288. God's

  1289. presence

  1290. and

  1291. that

  1292. is

  1293. salvation

  1294. God's

  1295. people

  1296. in

  1297. God's

  1298. perfect

  1299. place

  1300. enjoying

  1301. his

  1302. perfect

  1303. presence

  1304. forever

  1305. and

  1306. the

  1307. last

  1308. thing

  1309. to

  1310. recognize

  1311. about

  1312. this

  1313. salvation

  1314. and

  1315. it's

  1316. so

  1317. important

  1318. for

  1319. us

  1320. to

  1321. see

  1322. that

  1323. salvation

  1324. comes

  1325. by

  1326. grace

  1327. could

  1328. this

  1329. thief

  1330. on

  1331. the

  1332. cross

  1333. earn

  1334. his

  1335. salvation

  1336. did

  1337. he

  1338. have

  1339. a

  1340. chance

  1341. to

  1342. turn

  1343. over

  1344. a

  1345. new

  1346. leaf

  1347. and

  1348. do

  1349. some

  1350. good

  1351. deeds

  1352. did

  1353. he

  1354. have

  1355. a

  1356. chance

  1357. to

  1358. do

  1359. some

  1360. great

  1361. religious

  1362. activity

  1363. no

  1364. he

  1365. only

  1366. had

  1367. a

  1368. few

  1369. short

  1370. hours

  1371. left

  1372. to

  1373. live

  1374. and

  1375. that

  1376. reminds

  1377. us

  1378. that

  1379. he

  1380. is

  1381. saved

  1382. by

  1383. grace

  1384. through

  1385. faith

  1386. it's

  1387. free

  1388. grace

  1389. the

  1390. father

  1391. bearing

  1392. the

  1393. cost

  1394. of

  1395. salvation

  1396. and

  1397. sending

  1398. his

  1399. son

  1400. his

  1401. free

  1402. grace

  1403. and

  1404. the

  1405. son

  1406. being

  1407. willing

  1408. to

  1409. go

  1410. to

  1411. the

  1412. cross

  1413. to

  1414. die

  1415. in

  1416. our

  1417. place

  1418. for

  1419. our

  1420. sins

  1421. it's

  1422. a

  1423. gift

  1424. to

  1425. receive

  1426. by

  1427. faith

  1428. just as

  1429. this

  1430. man

  1431. couldn't

  1432. do

  1433. anything

  1434. to earn

  1435. it

  1436. neither

  1437. can

  1438. neither

  1439. do

  1440. we

  1441. it's

  1442. free

  1443. grace

  1444. what

  1445. does

  1446. the

  1447. cross

  1448. achieve

  1449. it

  1450. achieves

  1451. our

  1452. freedom

  1453. at a

  1454. price

  1455. as

  1456. I

  1457. was

  1458. reminding

  1459. myself

  1460. of

  1461. the

  1462. story

  1463. of

  1464. Arnold

  1465. Beltram

  1466. I

  1467. found

  1468. myself

  1469. wondering

  1470. I

  1471. wonder

  1472. how

  1473. this

  1474. lady

  1475. Julie

  1476. I

  1477. wonder

  1478. how

  1479. it

  1480. impacts

  1481. her

  1482. life

  1483. four

  1484. years

  1485. on

  1486. I

  1487. wonder

  1488. if

  1489. that's

  1490. a

  1491. daily

  1492. reminder

  1493. that

  1494. she's

  1495. here

  1496. because

  1497. of

  1498. the

  1499. sacrifice

  1500. of

  1501. another

  1502. or

  1503. is

  1504. that

  1505. something

  1506. that

  1507. falls

  1508. to

  1509. the

  1510. back

  1511. of

  1512. one's

  1513. mind

  1514. as

  1515. you

  1516. need

  1517. to

  1518. get

  1519. on

  1520. with

  1521. the

  1522. reality

  1523. of

  1524. life

  1525. don't

  1526. know

  1527. the

  1528. answer

  1529. to

  1530. that

  1531. one

  1532. and

  1533. in

  1534. a

  1535. sense

  1536. it's

  1537. not

  1538. really

  1539. that

  1540. important

  1541. for

  1542. us

  1543. but

  1544. when

  1545. it

  1546. comes

  1547. to

  1548. the

  1549. loving

  1550. rescue

  1551. of

  1552. Jesus

  1553. it's

  1554. hugely

  1555. important

  1556. when

  1557. it

  1558. comes

  1559. to

  1560. his

  1561. willingness

  1562. to

  1563. trade

  1564. places

  1565. with

  1566. us

  1567. to

  1568. die

  1569. so

  1570. that

  1571. we

  1572. might

  1573. live

  1574. how

  1575. we

  1576. respond

  1577. to

  1578. that

  1579. has

  1580. eternal

  1581. and

  1582. lasting

  1583. significance

  1584. one

  1585. final

  1586. observation

  1587. to

  1588. make

  1589. in

  1590. verse

  1591. 46

  1592. as

  1593. Jesus

  1594. dies

  1595. he

  1596. dies

  1597. as

  1598. an

  1599. innocent

  1600. sufferer

  1601. entrusting

  1602. himself

  1603. to

  1604. God

  1605. as

  1606. he

  1607. prays

  1608. father

  1609. into

  1610. your

  1611. hands

  1612. I

  1613. commit

  1614. my

  1615. spirit

  1616. and

  1617. they

  1618. notice

  1619. the

  1620. centurion

  1621. so

  1622. the

  1623. Roman

  1624. soldier

  1625. seeing

  1626. what

  1627. had

  1628. happened

  1629. praised

  1630. God

  1631. and

  1632. said

  1633. surely

  1634. this

  1635. was

  1636. a

  1637. righteous

  1638. man

  1639. while

  1640. others

  1641. were

  1642. blind

  1643. to

  1644. the

  1645. reality

  1646. this

  1647. Roman

  1648. executioner

  1649. he

  1650. sees

  1651. he

  1652. praises

  1653. he

  1654. believes

  1655. here

  1656. is

  1657. Jesus

  1658. a man

  1659. full

  1660. of

  1661. mercy

  1662. here

  1663. is

  1664. Jesus

  1665. a man

  1666. who

  1667. gives

  1668. forgiveness

  1669. here

  1670. is

  1671. a man

  1672. who

  1673. has

  1674. died

  1675. to

  1676. secure

  1677. salvation

  1678. and

  1679. so

  1680. he

  1681. praises

  1682. God

  1683. as

  1684. he

  1685. considered

  1686. the

  1687. cross

  1688. what

  1689. about

  1690. you

  1691. and

  1692. me

  1693. today

  1694. as

  1695. we

  1696. have

  1697. considered

  1698. the

  1699. cross

  1700. as

  1701. we

  1702. considered

  1703. the

  1704. loving

  1705. sacrifice

  1706. of

  1707. Jesus

  1708. the

  1709. son

  1710. of

  1711. man

  1712. who

  1713. came

  1714. to

  1715. give

  1716. his

  1717. life

  1718. as

  1719. a

  1720. ransom

  1721. for

  1722. many

  1723. does it

  1724. cause

  1725. us

  1726. to

  1727. worship

  1728. to

  1729. give

  1730. us

  1731. a

  1732. profound

  1733. sense

  1734. of

  1735. gratitude

  1736. does it

  1737. transform

  1738. our

  1739. hearts

  1740. and

  1741. our

  1742. lives

  1743. is

  1744. this

  1745. a

  1746. gift

  1747. that

  1748. we

  1749. have

  1750. received

  1751. have

  1752. we

  1753. come

  1754. to

  1755. that

  1756. place

  1757. where

  1758. we've

  1759. admitted

  1760. our

  1761. guilt

  1762. where

  1763. we

  1764. believe

  1765. that

  1766. Jesus

  1767. is

  1768. the

  1769. son

  1770. of

  1771. God

  1772. and

  1773. he's

  1774. the

  1775. saviour

  1776. have

  1777. we

  1778. come

  1779. to

  1780. him

  1781. because

  1782. if

  1783. we

  1784. do

  1785. we

  1786. have

  1787. this

  1788. promise

  1789. that

  1790. we'll

  1791. enjoy

  1792. life

  1793. with

  1794. him

  1795. now

  1796. and

  1797. for

  1798. all

  1799. eternity

  1800. in

  1801. the

  1802. paradise

  1803. of

  1804. heaven

  1805. let's

  1806. pray

  1807. together

  1808. lord

  1809. our

  1810. god

  1811. as

  1812. we

  1813. have

  1814. considered

  1815. the

  1816. cross

  1817. of

  1818. the

  1819. lord

  1820. jesus

  1821. and

  1822. the

  1823. price

  1824. he

  1825. paid

  1826. to

  1827. secure

  1828. salvation

  1829. we

  1830. pray

  1831. that

  1832. you

  1833. would

  1834. give

  1835. us

  1836. the

  1837. eyes

  1838. of

  1839. faith

  1840. to

  1841. see

  1842. like

  1843. that

  1844. thief

  1845. on

  1846. the

  1847. cross

  1848. to

  1849. recognize

  1850. jesus

  1851. as

  1852. the

  1853. sinless

  1854. one

  1855. to

  1856. recognize

  1857. him

  1858. as

  1859. one

  1860. with

  1861. an

  1862. eternal

  1863. kingdom

  1864. to

  1865. recognize

  1866. him

  1867. as

  1868. the

  1869. one

  1870. who

  1871. came

  1872. to

  1873. save

  1874. help

  1875. us

  1876. to

  1877. admit

  1878. our

  1879. sin

  1880. and

  1881. our

  1882. guilt

  1883. help

  1884. us

  1885. to

  1886. believe

  1887. in

  1888. him

  1889. so

  1890. that

  1891. we

  1892. would

  1893. come

  1894. to

  1895. him

  1896. in

  1897. faith

  1898. lord

  1899. we

  1900. pray

  1901. that

  1902. you'd

  1903. help

  1904. us

  1905. to

  1906. see

  1907. just

  1908. like

  1909. that

  1910. Roman

  1911. centurion

  1912. so

  1913. that

  1914. our

  1915. response

  1916. to

  1917. the

  1918. cross

  1919. us

  1920. and

  1921. we'd

  1922. be

  1923. one

  1924. of

  1925. heartfelt

  1926. praise

  1927. that

  1928. we

  1929. would

  1930. recognize

  1931. jesus

  1932. as

  1933. the

  1934. truly

  1935. righteous

  1936. one

  1937. suffering

  1938. and

  1939. dying

  1940. in

  1941. our

  1942. place

  1943. so

  1944. that

  1945. his

  1946. righteousness

  1947. might be

  1948. given

  1949. to

  1950. us

  1951. so

  1952. that

  1953. we

  1954. might

  1955. have

  1956. access

  1957. to

  1958. know

  1959. and

  1960. enjoy

  1961. life

  1962. with

  1963. you

  1964. our

  1965. god

  1966. lord

  1967. we thank

  1968. you for

  1969. this time

  1970. of year

  1971. we thank

  1972. you for

  1973. easter

  1974. and for

  1975. the

  1976. opportunity

  1977. it

  1978. gives

  1979. to

  1980. us

  1981. to

  1982. share

  1983. with

  1984. family

  1985. and

  1986. friends

  1987. and

  1988. with

  1989. our

  1990. wider

  1991. community

  1992. the

  1993. good

  1994. news

  1995. of

  1996. what

  1997. we

  1998. believe

  1999. and

  2000. so

  2001. lord

  2002. we

  2003. pray

  2004. that

  2005. you

  2006. would

  2007. be

  2008. at

  2009. work

  2010. up

  2011. and

  2012. down

  2013. this

  2014. country

  2015. and

  2016. indeed

  2017. through

  2018. the

  2019. world

  2020. as

  2021. your

  2022. people

  2023. take

  2024. different

  2025. opportunities

  2026. to

  2027. introduce

  2028. and

  2029. to

  2030. invite

  2031. we

  2032. pray

  2033. for

  2034. a

  2035. real

  2036. openness

  2037. we

  2038. pray

  2039. for

  2040. a

  2041. work

  2042. of

  2043. god

  2044. in

  2045. the

  2046. hearts

  2047. of

  2048. men

  2049. and

  2050. women

  2051. and

  2052. boys

  2053. and

  2054. girls

  2055. causing

  2056. many

  2057. to

  2058. see

  2059. and

  2060. to

  2061. believe

  2062. and

  2063. to

  2064. have

  2065. deep

  2066. and

  2067. lasting

  2068. joy

  2069. and

  2070. lord

  2071. we

  2072. pray

  2073. especially

  2074. once again

  2075. for our

  2076. children

  2077. and for

  2078. our

  2079. young

  2080. people

  2081. lord

  2082. as

  2083. we

  2084. have

  2085. been

  2086. asked

  2087. to

  2088. pray

  2089. for

  2090. our

  2091. youth

  2092. camps

  2093. we

  2094. thank

  2095. you

  2096. for

  2097. them

  2098. for

  2099. the

  2100. friendship

  2101. for

  2102. the

  2103. bible

  2104. teaching

  2105. for

  2106. the

  2107. fellowship

  2108. that

  2109. they

  2110. provide

  2111. lord

  2112. we

  2113. ask

  2114. that

  2115. where

  2116. there

  2117. are

  2118. still

  2119. important

  2120. vacancies

  2121. to be

  2122. filled

  2123. on

  2124. teams

  2125. that

  2126. you

  2127. would

  2128. bring

  2129. just

  2130. the

  2131. right

  2132. people

  2133. to

  2134. come

  2135. along

  2136. and

  2137. we

  2138. pray

  2139. that

  2140. every

  2344. be

  2345. the

  2346. ability

  2347. from

  2348. nations

  2349. and from

  2350. churches

  2351. to meet

  2352. the

  2354. needs

  2355. that there

  2365. our hearts

  2366. to make

  2367. us

  2368. generous

  2369. in
