  1. Good morning, church. The scripture reading this morning comes from Luke chapter 12, beginning at verse 13.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen or in your bulletin.

  3. Someone in the crowd said to him, teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.

  4. But he said to him, man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?

  5. And he said to them, take care and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.

  6. And he told them a parable saying, the land of a rich man produced plentifully.

  7. And he thought to himself, what shall I do?

  8. For I have nowhere to store my crops.

  9. And he said, I will do this.

  10. I will tear down my barns and build larger ones.

  11. And there I will store all my grain and my goods.

  12. And I will say to my soul, soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years.

  13. Relax, eat, drink, be merry.

  14. But God said to him, fool, this night your soul is required of you.

  15. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?

  16. So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.

  17. And he said to his disciples, therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on.

  18. For life is more than food and the body more than clothing.

  19. Consider the ravens, they neither sow nor reap.

  20. They have neither storehouses nor barn, and yet God feeds them.

  21. Of how much more value are you than the birds?

  22. And which of you, by being anxious, can add a single hour to his span of life?

  23. If then you are not able to do a smaller thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?

  24. Consider the lilies, how they grow.

  25. They neither toil nor spin.

  26. Yet, I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

  27. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you?

  28. Oh, you of little faith.

  29. Fear not, little flock.

  30. For it is your father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

  31. Sell your possessions and give to the needy.

  32. Provide yourselves with money bags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail,

  33. where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.

  34. For where your treasure is, there your heart be also.

  35. Amen.

  36. Thank you, Angeline.

  37. Just bring this up.

  38. Great welcome again, everybody.

  39. Excuse me.

  40. My name is Chris, if you don't know me.

  41. And it's not quite as tall as Kevin.

  42. And it's just really exciting.

  43. We're coming to the end of our series, looking at why Christianity this morning.

  44. And we're going to look at how relevant faith is to life.

  45. But before we do that, I just want to pray for us that we wouldn't just kind of go through the motions in hearing someone talk for a little while,

  46. but actually God would speak to us and our hearts would be open to him.

  47. So just bow your heads with me now and let's pray.

  48. Father, I thank you that you're not a God who is absent.

  49. You're not a God who is silent.

  50. You're not a God who is distant.

  51. But you're a God who comes close to us right today, wants to speak to us today,

  52. and wants to give us life and hope and a joy in you today.

  53. And I pray, Lord, as I speak and as your word comes, Lord, I pray that it wouldn't just be words.

  54. I pray that your spirit would come in your power and open our hearts.

  55. You'd challenge us.

  56. You'd encourage us.

  57. You'd change us.

  58. And that we would see you.

  59. And we would never be the same again.

  60. In Jesus' name.

  61. Amen.

  62. Okay.

  63. Okay.

  64. Okay.

  65. If you can't hear me, just kind of throw something in my general direction.

  66. So I was in Wong Tai Sin Temple.

  67. And I was being shown around by this 17-year-old kid.

  68. And he showed me around all the different gods and everything that was going on in the temple.

  69. And at the end of the tour, me and my friend, my friend asked this guy,

  70. Oh, okay, that's really interesting, everything you shared with us.

  71. Tell me, do you have any faith or any belief?

  72. And he said to us something that I think many people in Hong Kong said.

  73. He said, I don't have time to think about that kind of thing.

  74. I'm just too busy.

  75. He's 17 years old.

  76. But you see, for many people, life is divided between kind of a sacred and secular world.

  77. A practical world where, you know, the real stuff of life happens.

  78. You know, you need jobs and relationships and the things you really care about.

  79. And then there's kind of spiritual stuff, which is maybe, is interesting if you have the time.

  80. But it's not really practically connected to the real stuff of life.

  81. And so what we realize with this is actually many people say,

  82. I'll put off thinking about faith and things until maybe I've got a bit more free time

  83. and I've got a little bit of interest.

  84. But the problem with that is life isn't divided into neat compartments.

  85. You see, your work, your relationships, in fact, everything you do

  86. is driven and shaped through a lens of a story you believe,

  87. of something of where you find your value,

  88. of where you find your sense of freedom,

  89. of the story of where you find satisfaction and rest in life.

  90. Everything you do is shaped through a lens.

  91. And that story, that lens you believe,

  92. can either enslave you or it can free you.

  93. It can either give you something meaningful and purposeful to live for

  94. or it can crush you or lead you to crushing other people.

  95. And so what I want to talk about today is just three things

  96. that I think Christianity and the gospel gives us as believers

  97. and why it's relevant in life.

  98. So we're going to talk about how it gives value for people who are status-seeking.

  99. We're going to talk about how it gives freedom for those of us who are enslaved.

  100. And we're going to talk about how it brings rest for the restless.

  101. Okay?

  102. So let's go with the first one.

  103. Value that the Christianity gives us, the gospel gives us.

  104. You know, historically, people have found their identity in a couple of different ways.

  105. One way is by looking outward into what other people around you think about you.

  106. So in traditional Chinese society,

  107. your identity and your values found in fulfilling your duties towards your family

  108. and towards the greater nation even.

  109. And in the context of that kind of story of where your identity is found

  110. and in the context of this story that we heard read,

  111. there's a traditional structure for even inheritance

  112. where the older brother is somebody.

  113. He's the one, because he's the older brother, he gets the inheritance.

  114. And in traditional culture, what happens is you keep your position by controlling other people.

  115. And so you see in this story, the sense of the person, the brother who is crying out,

  116. he says, hey, like, intervene, Jesus, in this issue that I have with my brother.

  117. And why is he even talking to Jesus?

  118. Because he feels the way that social expectations are restricting him.

  119. To have value, you do what your family or what your peers value.

  120. Be a lawyer, be a doctor, be a banker, even if you're a gifted ballet dancer.

  121. That doesn't matter, because it's what everyone else thinks valuable is what you should do.

  122. And that can be suffocating.

  123. And so this younger brother, and commentators will tell us it is a younger brother,

  124. he will reject that idea, and he shouts out to Jesus,

  125. because he sees the whole unfairness of the traditional system.

  126. And he wants the freedom to make his own choices, pursue his own dreams,

  127. because that's where he will find his value.

  128. You see, if he has got money, and he's got the freedom to do what he wants with it,

  129. then he can be somebody.

  130. But what he found is his value is not found in looking outwards to others,

  131. it's found in looking inward into what his own desires are.

  132. And the problem is that his brother is standing in the way.

  133. And so he looks to Jesus.

  134. He says,

  135. Jesus, come tell my brother to divide the inheritance.

  136. He looks to an outside authority to try and validate him.

  137. Because you see, if you actually look inward to try and be somebody to your own desires,

  138. you'll always end up needing someone else or something else to validate you.

  139. You know, we try in our culture, we're probably more,

  140. we've got a mix of both of those sense of identities in Hong Kong, right?

  141. Some of us lean more to one, some of us lean more to the other.

  142. But for people who follow their own dreams and desires,

  143. what you find is,

  144. you've got to find your identity in something outside of yourself.

  145. So you look to things like your brands,

  146. what you wear,

  147. where you shop,

  148. the car you drive,

  149. or even to your work,

  150. to give you a sense of value.

  151. You know, I spoke to one guy

  152. who got his dream job

  153. in a top company.

  154. And he had a couple of friends with him at the same time

  155. who managed to get the same job.

  156. And about a month after he got this job,

  157. he came complaining to me,

  158. saying his friends

  159. had got all the interesting,

  160. career-relevant work

  161. in their team,

  162. and he was stuck in a dead-end project,

  163. just crunching numbers.

  164. And he was beginning to despair

  165. and actually resent his friends

  166. and try and think of ways out.

  167. He's like,

  168. hey, should I go to another job?

  169. Because he thought he wasn't being valued.

  170. Because he thought others didn't appreciate him.

  171. Because he thought that something was stopping him

  172. from being somebody.

  173. He'd been there a month.

  174. You know, the atheist philosopher,

  175. Alan de Botton,

  176. he says this,

  177. he says,

  178. a work-based identity,

  179. which is a real story in our culture,

  180. is by its nature extremely unstable.

  181. We're a sacking,

  182. a profit downgrade,

  183. or a retirement away

  184. from losing an established sense of self,

  185. of who we think we are.

  186. And because of competition

  187. in a market economy,

  188. our status depends on victories over others.

  189. We end up wanting others to sink

  190. because every time they do,

  191. our own prestige will be enhanced.

  192. That doesn't describe anywhere in Hong Kong,

  193. does it?

  194. You see,

  195. in traditional society,

  196. your value comes outwardly.

  197. In individual society,

  198. it comes from your own desires and inwardly.

  199. But you've always got to be validated by others.

  200. But Jesus comes along and he says,

  201. don't look outward,

  202. don't look inward.

  203. Don't even look religiously to me.

  204. He says,

  205. what you need to do is you need to look upward

  206. to find your own ultimate identity.

  207. What he says is this.

  208. He says,

  209. do you know who your father is?

  210. He says,

  211. God feeds.

  212. He says,

  213. consider the ravens.

  214. God feeds even these little birds.

  215. How much more value are you than them,

  216. than these birds?

  217. And he goes on to say,

  218. listen,

  219. all this other stuff you're worried about,

  220. your father knows what you need.

  221. You see,

  222. what he's saying is,

  223. in the stories of our culture,

  224. you don't have to try and be somebody,

  225. or make yourself someone,

  226. or maintain your position,

  227. through some kind of performance,

  228. or some way of crushing other people.

  229. He says,

  230. I give you an identity.

  231. For those who trust me,

  232. you go from being orphans,

  233. you've got to fight it out to try and be the top dog,

  234. to actually becoming adopted sons and daughters,

  235. of the king of the whole universe.

  236. You have a rich,

  237. heavenly father.

  238. And he loves us.

  239. Isn't that amazing?

  240. He loves us.

  241. And he sent Jesus,

  242. not just for some kind of theoretical idea,

  243. which is detached from your life.

  244. He sent Jesus,

  245. to release you,

  246. and to lift you,

  247. out of the rat race,

  248. of having to try and prove yourself to be someone,

  249. from seeking value from everybody else,

  250. in your performance,

  251. so you find worth and value in his love for you.

  252. You know,

  253. if one of Lee Ka-Shing's sons,

  254. or granddaughters,

  255. came to do an apprenticeship in a company,

  256. but none of the colleagues,

  257. none of the bosses,

  258. knew who she was.

  259. Now,

  260. she may get shouted at.

  261. She may make mistakes.

  262. She's got to work hard,

  263. and do her best in the job.

  264. But at the end of the day,

  265. whether she's been shouted at,

  266. or whether she's been praised,

  267. she can walk out,

  268. and in and out of that office,

  269. with confidence,

  270. because she knows,

  271. she's the granddaughter of Lee Ka-Shing.

  272. Right?

  273. She's secure,

  274. if her identity is not in that.

  275. But Christianity says,

  276. the God of the whole universe,

  277. through Jesus,

  278. has given you status,

  279. apart from your performance,

  280. how much more secure should we be?

  281. So that means,

  282. the domestic helper,

  283. who is devalued in our society,

  284. is honored in Jesus,

  285. and is free to do her job well,

  286. without being crushed by inferiority.

  287. That means,

  288. the CEO,

  289. who is honored by society,

  290. doesn't need to crush people,

  291. or maintain his own kind of superiority,

  292. to maintain his position,

  293. because he has a heavenly father,

  294. who gives him value,

  295. apart from his social status.

  296. You see,

  297. faith in Christ,

  298. sets you free,

  299. from running on the treadmill,

  300. of seeking to be somebody,

  301. because Christ has already made us somebody.

  302. That's the first thing.

  303. It gives us value,

  304. for the status seeking.

  305. Second thing,

  306. that the gospel gives us,

  307. it gives us freedom,

  308. for the enslaved.

  309. You know,

  310. some people,

  311. live for the weekends.

  312. Okay?

  313. It's Monday morning,

  314. and they're already thinking about Friday night.

  315. That's none of you in here,

  316. I'm sure.

  317. We live for our comfort,

  318. right?

  319. Other of us,

  320. you know,

  321. Monday morning,

  322. we're thinking,

  323. what can I accomplish this week?

  324. You know,

  325. the A types,

  326. you're kind of driven,

  327. you thrive off development,

  328. achievement,

  329. accomplishment,

  330. improvement,

  331. we're very different kinds of people.

  332. But whether you're living for comfort,

  333. or whether you're living for success,

  334. or anything else like this,

  335. Bob Dylan,

  336. that great theologian,

  337. said this,

  338. the singer,

  339. he said,

  340. you've got to serve somebody.

  341. We're all serving something.

  342. And the question is,

  343. what master in your life,

  344. brings life,

  345. and love,

  346. and freedom,

  347. and which master will enslave you,

  348. or leave you trapped,

  349. in regret,

  350. fear,

  351. or insecurity,

  352. if you don't get what you want.

  353. Jesus comes to this man,

  354. and he says to him,

  355. he actually completely avoids the question,

  356. the request the man has said,

  357. and he says,

  358. take care,

  359. and be on your guard,

  360. against all covetousness,

  361. that means greed,

  362. for one's life,

  363. doesn't consist,

  364. in the abundance,

  365. of one's possessions.

  366. What he's saying is,

  367. he's saying,

  368. don't live,

  369. for the wrong treasure,

  370. in your life.

  371. Because when you look back,

  372. on your life,

  373. you'll find you've actually,

  374. wasted your life,

  375. and you're living in regret.

  376. And what he does,

  377. he then tells this story,

  378. of a rich farmer,

  379. a successful farmer.

  380. And he says,

  381. this farmer,

  382. his success wasn't enough,

  383. he was like,

  384. oh,

  385. I've got all of this,

  386. now let me build bigger barns,

  387. so I can store more,

  388. I mean,

  389. and so he's investing,

  390. bigger warehouses,

  391. he's seeking financial security,

  392. so he works hard now,

  393. so he can retire early,

  394. he can relax,

  395. eat,

  396. drink,

  397. and be merry.

  398. He wants to play golf,

  399. he wants to go to good restaurants,

  400. and have holidays,

  401. in the Maldives.

  402. That's his treasure in life.

  403. He's chasing the Hong Kong dream.

  404. Right?

  405. Doesn't everyone want that?

  406. That's the kind of system,

  407. that he,

  408. that's the story,

  409. that he's playing out.

  410. But Jesus says,

  411. there's a couple of things,

  412. that are wrong in this.

  413. The first thing is,

  414. your treasure can be taken away from you.

  415. He says,

  416. fool.

  417. That's pretty strong.

  418. He says,

  419. you fool.

  420. And Jesus says to everyone,

  421. following the Hong Kong dream,

  422. you fool.

  423. Invest in a ship,

  424. that's got holes in it,

  425. and you will see your investment sinking,

  426. before your very eyes.

  427. He says,

  428. tonight,

  429. the whole of what you've lived for,

  430. will be gone.

  431. And who's going to pick up everything that you have?

  432. You see,

  433. what he's saying is,

  434. make your kids' education your treasure,

  435. and see how insecure and fearful you are,

  436. when it comes to trying to find schools for them.

  437. Make financial security your treasure,

  438. and see how insecure and fearful you become,

  439. when the stock market crashes.

  440. You see,

  441. anything that can be taken away from you,

  442. is not a treasure that is stable enough to hold you.

  443. And the next thing he said,

  444. that comes out of this is,

  445. if something can be taken away from you,

  446. but this man cannot see it.

  447. Because you see,

  448. if you live for another treasure,

  449. which is not Jesus,

  450. it will blind you,

  451. and enslave you,

  452. to reality.

  453. I know someone,

  454. again,

  455. whose treasure was his career.

  456. He was doing really well in his career,

  457. but he had a boss,

  458. who he could never say no to,

  459. who was just unreasonable,

  460. who was exploitative,

  461. and who really was just,

  462. just really enslaving him in his job.

  463. But he would never say no,

  464. because he was afraid,

  465. of being fired,

  466. or afraid of losing his promotion opportunity.

  467. And he'd be out for a birthday meal with his wife,

  468. and his boss would call,

  469. and demand something to be done right there,

  470. which actually didn't need to be done at all,

  471. for the next few days.

  472. And despite his wife's protestations,

  473. he would just get up and do it.

  474. Until the day,

  475. when his wife sat him down,

  476. gave him an ultimatum,

  477. and said,

  478. you can either draw healthy boundaries,

  479. around your boss,

  480. or I'm leaving you.

  481. And suddenly,

  482. he saw how his self-centered desires,

  483. had blinded him,

  484. to the destructive choices that he'd made.

  485. It had enslaved him,

  486. and actually the very things that he loved,

  487. he was actually destroying.

  488. That's all of us.

  489. With any treasure that you put before Christ.

  490. Because any treasure that can be taken away,

  491. will leave you insecure,

  492. it will leave you a slave,

  493. and it will blind you.

  494. But Jesus says this,

  495. where do you get freedom?

  496. He says,

  497. make God your treasure.

  498. He says,

  499. seek first God's kingdom.

  500. Worship God before anything else.

  501. And then he says,

  502. fear not,

  503. little flock,

  504. it's your father's good pleasure

  505. to give you the kingdom.

  506. Sell your possessions,

  507. give to the needy,

  508. provide yourselves with money bags

  509. that don't grow old,

  510. with a treasure in the heavens

  511. that doesn't fail,

  512. where no thief approaches,

  513. and no moth destroys,

  514. for where your treasure is there,

  515. is your heart.

  516. You see,

  517. what is he saying?

  518. He's saying,

  519. actually,

  520. when you place your treasure in Christ,

  521. and worshipping him above everything else,

  522. it can't be taken away from you.

  523. You see,

  524. when God is your treasure,

  525. the economy can be collapsing,

  526. your kids may be failing in all their exams,

  527. the people you're trying to help,

  528. and you live for helping people,

  529. may be refusing to listen to you,

  530. but there is still,

  531. your life is not collapsed,

  532. because you still have

  533. an unshakable anchor.

  534. There is someone

  535. who nothing can take away,

  536. the place of joy that you can have,

  537. peace,

  538. security,

  539. because he says,

  540. there's no thief

  541. that can take away God from you.

  542. You see,

  543. that's why research actually shows

  544. people who have faith

  545. have far higher levels

  546. of emotional,

  547. mental,

  548. and physical well-being

  549. than those without.

  550. I didn't know that.

  551. They're more storm-resistant.

  552. It also says,

  553. he says,

  554. give to the needy,

  555. sell your possessions.

  556. Do you know what research also shows?

  557. That people of faith

  558. who really have God as their center

  559. are far more generous

  560. with their time,

  561. money,

  562. and talents,

  563. especially when it's hard times,

  564. because they've got a security

  565. that means they don't have to hold on.

  566. So if you are a believer,

  567. or if you're not,

  568. how are you doing with generosity

  569. in the times we live in right now?

  570. Because that will actually

  571. give you a window

  572. on where your treasure is.

  573. But it's not that Jesus says

  574. it just can't be taken away from you.

  575. When God is your treasure,

  576. it also sets you free.

  577. Because you have a master,

  578. a king of his kingdom,

  579. who is not there to enslave you,

  580. but he's there to free you

  581. from the slavery

  582. from your own desires.

  583. For that man,

  584. it was his greed

  585. that drove him

  586. and blinded him.

  587. But what God says is,

  588. I want to bring you

  589. into freedom.

  590. And freedom only works

  591. if you live according

  592. to your design.

  593. Do you know that?

  594. If you're a fish,

  595. and you think,

  596. hey,

  597. I'd just love to spend

  598. a little bit of time

  599. on the land.

  600. Now,

  601. you might want to do that,

  602. but let me tell you,

  603. you're going to die.

  604. You see,

  605. fish were made

  606. to flourish in water.

  607. We were made

  608. to flourish

  609. in relationship

  610. and worshiping God

  611. as the center.

  612. And so when God calls us

  613. to do things,

  614. there are commands

  615. in scripture,

  616. right?

  617. And often what we think,

  618. even if we've been Christians

  619. for a long time,

  620. deep in our hearts,

  621. we often think

  622. God's commands

  623. are restrictive to us.

  624. They're trying to hold us

  625. back from freedom.

  626. But actually,

  627. his commands are there

  628. to free you from yourself.

  629. Just think about forgiveness.

  630. You know,

  631. all the research,

  632. again,

  633. shows that forgiveness

  634. is actually

  635. both good for you

  636. and it's good for relationships

  637. and it's good for society.

  638. I mean,

  639. it's a win,

  640. okay?

  641. I talked to one lady.

  642. She'd been badly treated

  643. by a colleague.

  644. And she was bitter

  645. and angry

  646. and miserable.

  647. Every time she went to work,

  648. it was just like hell.

  649. for her.

  650. And we talked about

  651. the forgiveness

  652. that God calls us to.

  653. And she said,

  654. I don't want to forgive.

  655. Anyone ever felt like that?

  656. Right?

  657. I don't want to forgive.

  658. And I said,

  659. don't you realize

  660. that the longer

  661. you hold on to bitterness

  662. and anger,

  663. the greater the control is

  664. that that other person

  665. has over you.

  666. You realize you're a slave?

  667. Your own desires

  668. for what you think you want

  669. actually leave you to slavery.

  670. slavery.

  671. But Jesus says

  672. he died both to forgive you

  673. but also to call you

  674. to forgive others.

  675. Not just because

  676. he's trying to make life

  677. difficult for you.

  678. He wants to lead you

  679. into a freedom of life.

  680. And that goes for

  681. every command he ever gives.

  682. Even the ones

  683. that you are resisting

  684. right now in your life.

  685. He wants your freedom.

  686. freedom.

  687. So when you follow Christ

  688. as the center of your life,

  689. nothing,

  690. it cannot be,

  691. your treasure cannot be

  692. taken away from you.

  693. And it sets you free.

  694. He gives you value

  695. for status-seeking people.

  696. And thirdly,

  697. and finally,

  698. it gives you rest

  699. for the restless.

  700. You know,

  701. Jesus,

  702. at least three or four times

  703. in this passage,

  704. he says to his disciples,

  705. don't be anxious

  706. about your life.

  707. He says,

  708. which of you by being anxious

  709. can add anything more

  710. onto your life?

  711. He says,

  712. why are you anxious

  713. about your life?

  714. Like he goes,

  715. why are you worried

  716. about everything?

  717. What is he assuming?

  718. That people are anxious

  719. and restless

  720. and worried.

  721. Right?

  722. And this was

  723. 2,000 years ago

  724. before Twitter,

  725. email,

  726. Facebook,

  727. any other social media.

  728. You see,

  729. what they were anxious about

  730. was that they

  731. and their families

  732. were always two harvests

  733. away from death

  734. by starvation.

  735. That's fairly,

  736. like,

  737. reasonable,

  738. right?

  739. I mean,

  740. what we get anxious about

  741. is we get anxious

  742. about our kids

  743. don't get into

  744. the right schools,

  745. we feel like we're

  746. falling behind

  747. everybody else at work,

  748. we don't have

  749. that amazing relationship

  750. we wanted,

  751. we feel that people

  752. will reject us.

  753. Now,

  754. put that in perspective

  755. of starvation,

  756. and it's not quite

  757. in the same category.

  758. Right?

  759. But if I was to say

  760. to you,

  761. as Jesus kind of says,

  762. he says,

  763. hey,

  764. stop worrying,

  765. it's stupid.

  766. I mean,

  767. he kind of says,

  768. hey,

  769. it's not going to add

  770. anything to your life.

  771. Like,

  772. he goes for a logical

  773. argument,

  774. he doesn't leave it there,

  775. but he starts with

  776. a logical argument.

  777. But if I say to you,

  778. stop worrying,

  779. does that help you

  780. to stop worrying?

  781. No,

  782. if I say,

  783. worrying is stupid,

  784. you go,

  785. I know,

  786. but I can't help it.

  787. You see,

  788. why do we keep

  789. staying awake at night

  790. worrying?

  791. Why are we still

  792. on this treadmill

  793. in life?

  794. It's because

  795. deep inside,

  796. we're desperately

  797. insecure.

  798. All of us.

  799. And if you don't

  800. think you are,

  801. you're probably

  802. more insecure

  803. than you realize.

  804. You see,

  805. we're insecure,

  806. we want to be loved,

  807. we want to feel safe,

  808. we want to belong,

  809. we want to flourish,

  810. and those we love too.

  811. And so we want

  812. to control our world

  813. so that we can be

  814. like at the center,

  815. we can get those things.

  816. But hasn't COVID

  817. showed us

  818. we're not in control

  819. of our world?

  820. If you thought

  821. you were in 2019,

  822. you have been

  823. very severely

  824. disillusioned.

  825. The world

  826. is not,

  827. is uncertain place.

  828. People are not

  829. always safe.

  830. And the reason

  831. we hurry,

  832. the reason we strive

  833. to prove ourselves,

  834. the reason we feel

  835. like we've never

  836. done enough

  837. to really earn,

  838. to really be able

  839. to rest well,

  840. is because deep down

  841. we know that we're

  842. not totally acceptable.

  843. If you're honest.

  844. Because if others

  845. really knew

  846. what was inside of you,

  847. even if your loved ones

  848. knew everything

  849. that you actually

  850. really thought,

  851. that would be

  852. a scary prospect.

  853. And so what we want

  854. to do,

  855. we want to do

  856. anything we can

  857. to cover up,

  858. to prove and to show

  859. that we're worthy

  860. of love,

  861. we're worthy of respect,

  862. we're worthy of being

  863. noticed.

  864. That's why we're so

  865. busy all the time.

  866. And you know,

  867. what some people

  868. do with that is

  869. then they try

  870. and find their worth

  871. in religion.

  872. Religion tells you,

  873. you've messed up,

  874. you've sinned,

  875. but now just do

  876. some really good

  877. spiritual things.

  878. And that will kind of,

  879. that will get you

  880. in the right place.

  881. You know,

  882. read your Bible,

  883. go to church,

  884. give some money,

  885. give money in the offering,

  886. give even more,

  887. because then you might

  888. get a bit more

  889. kind of a sense

  890. of peace in your heart.

  891. Be a good person,

  892. help the granny

  893. across the road.

  894. Even if she doesn't

  895. want to cross,

  896. just help her anyway.

  897. Anyway.

  898. But then the next time

  899. that you screw up

  900. and shame and guilt

  901. come upon you,

  902. what have you got to do?

  903. You've just got to keep

  904. on that treadmill.

  905. It's never ending.

  906. But we've quoted this before,

  907. but I think this is really pertinent.

  908. The fourth century theologian,

  909. Augustine,

  910. said,

  911. because you have made us

  912. for yourself,

  913. our hearts are restless

  914. till they find their rest

  915. in you.

  916. You see what he's saying?

  917. He's saying there's only one place

  918. where you can be fully known

  919. and fully loved.

  920. And that's through Jesus Christ.

  921. You see what Jesus says

  922. in this passage?

  923. He says,

  924. it's your father's

  925. good pleasure

  926. to give you the kingdom.

  927. Now what's he talking about?

  928. The kingdom

  929. is the place

  930. where we are living

  931. in right,

  932. satisfying relationship

  933. under his rule.

  934. It's where we belong.

  935. It's where we are loved.

  936. It's where we flourish in him

  937. and he gets all the glory.

  938. He's at the center.

  939. What he's saying is this.

  940. The man whose greed

  941. led him to strive

  942. ceaselessly

  943. to find life

  944. in his bank balance

  945. and then for the future,

  946. he says,

  947. God has already got

  948. an abundance of life for us.

  949. He's not stingy.

  950. He wants,

  951. no,

  952. not just he wants,

  953. he actually gets pleasure

  954. from giving

  955. the kingdom to us.

  956. Do you see that?

  957. It brings a smile

  958. to his face.

  959. He's not going,

  960. oh,

  961. well,

  962. I guess I better be generous

  963. to them.

  964. That's my job as God.

  965. No,

  966. it gives him

  967. this overwhelming pleasure

  968. for us to find

  969. satisfaction in him.

  970. You see,

  971. Jesus is saying

  972. to those who are

  973. trying to control

  974. our worry,

  975. our world through worry,

  976. through restless striving.

  977. He says,

  978. come to me,

  979. all you who are weary

  980. and heavy laden,

  981. and I will give you rest.

  982. Anyone feel restless?

  983. You see,

  984. how does he give us rest?

  985. Well,

  986. the God of the whole universe,

  987. the one who sustains us,

  988. the one who's got

  989. the past,

  990. the present,

  991. and the future

  992. all in his hands

  993. right now,

  994. the one who's actually

  995. in control

  996. of your circumstances,

  997. whatever you're going

  998. through right now,

  999. the one who has

  1000. all of that,

  1001. he has the world

  1002. on his shoulders,

  1003. so you don't have

  1004. to take the weight

  1005. of the world

  1006. on your shoulders.

  1007. But more than that,

  1008. more than even just

  1009. trusting him

  1010. with your circumstances,

  1011. he says to insecure

  1012. people like you

  1013. and me,

  1014. unacceptable people,

  1015. that he's made

  1016. in exchange,

  1017. that he says,

  1018. I take your life

1019. and I give you mine.

  1020. Because on the cross,

1021. he's taking all the heap

  1022. of our restless worries

  1023. and our guilt

  1024. and our shame,

  1025. and he says,

1026. I took that on myself.

  1027. He was weighed down

  1028. with the burden

  1029. of your sin,

  1030. your guilt,

  1031. your striving,

  1032. that you could rest

  1033. in him.

  1034. And that rest

  1035. doesn't mean

  1036. you're just sitting

  1037. on the sofa,

  1038. it means heart rest.

1039. It means you can go

1040. to work and be busy,

  1041. but actually you don't

  1042. have to prove yourself.

  1043. It means he is

  1044. the sacrifice for you,

1045. so you do not need

  1046. to make yourself worthy.

  1047. It means the God

  1048. who rules the world

  1049. came down in Jesus

1050. and it was his pleasure

  1051. to crush Jesus.

  1052. That's what Isaiah 53 says.

1053. Jesus is the one person

  1054. who knows the depths

  1055. that your heart

  1056. can sink to.

1057. Do you know why he knows?

  1058. Because he's experienced

  1059. it on the cross.

  1060. He's experienced

1061. the weight of your anger,

1062. the weight of your frustration,

  1063. the weight of everything

  1064. that you go through.

  1065. He has felt that

  1066. and taken it,

1067. and yet with the full knowledge

  1068. of how bad

1069. you and I can be,

1070. yet he doesn't reject us,

1071. he doesn't turn away from us,

1072. he doesn't do all the things

  1073. that we fear

1074. from everybody else around us.

1075. Instead, he runs towards us

  1076. and his death

  1077. brings forgiveness to us,

  1078. cleanses us,

  1079. and he says,

  1080. it's my good pleasure

1081. to give you the kingdom.

1082. I want that for you.

  1083. I've done that

  1084. so you can come

  1085. and be set free

  1086. from worshipping

  1087. everything else,

1088. being slaves to everything else

1089. so that you can find

  1090. freedom in me.

1091. And that's the place of rest.

  1092. And he calls us

  1093. to follow him

1094. on that way of freedom

  1095. and flourishing.

  1096. The place where you're

  1097. fully known

  1098. and fully loved.

  1099. You know,

  1100. I often meet

  1101. either some older people

  1102. going up the steps

  1103. in the MTR

  1104. and they're carrying

  1105. these really heavy loads.

1106. And I often stop and say,

1107. hey, do you want a hand?

  1108. Can I give you a hand?

1109. And many of them say no.

1110. And what I see them doing

1111. is they're kind of like

  1112. puffing and panting,

  1113. they're exhausted,

  1114. they're kind of swearing

  1115. under their breath,

  1116. they're complaining

  1117. about everything,

1118. and they're getting up here

  1119. and I'm like,

1120. are you sure you don't want a hand?

  1121. And they're going,

  1122. no.

1123. And I look at them

  1124. and go,

  1125. you know,

  1126. it was really simple,

  1127. I could have just

1128. given you a hand up.

  1129. Why don't they?

  1130. Well,

1131. it's because of our pride.

1132. It's because we want to feel

  1133. like we've done it.

1134. It's because we want to go,

  1135. there we go,

1136. I managed it by myself.

  1137. I might have destroyed

1138. everyone else in the process,

  1139. but I managed it.

  1140. You see,

  1141. what keeps us restless

1142. when rest is available for us

  1143. in our everyday lives

  1144. is our pride.

  1145. It's because

1146. we often prefer a religion

  1147. or a non-religion

  1148. of performance

1149. to a place of rest.

  1150. But the good news

  1151. of Christianity

  1152. is for anyone

  1153. who's willing

1154. to lay down your pride,

  1155. for anyone

  1156. who's willing to say,

  1157. I don't have to be

1158. in control of my life.

  1159. I don't have to prove myself.

  1160. Jesus has done everything

  1161. to say,

  1162. there's a gift for you

  1163. today

  1164. of rest.

  1165. It's not grudging

  1166. kind of acceptance.

  1167. There's a gift.

1168. And if you are not

  1169. a Christian today,

  1170. my challenge is,

  1171. will you take

  1172. the offer

  1173. and receive

  1174. the gift

1175. of his rest to you?

1176. Or do you want to

1177. just carry on your life

  1178. on that treadmill?

  1179. Because Christ

  1180. has done everything

  1181. for us.

1182. If you are a Christian,

  1183. you know,

  1184. there's someone I know

  1185. who their relationship

  1186. with their dad

  1187. was really strained.

  1188. Growing up,

  1189. he'd been really critical,

  1190. controlling.

  1191. Nothing they did

  1192. was ever good enough.

  1193. They could never

  1194. say no to him.

  1195. They were constantly

  1196. compared with other people,

  1197. with their siblings

  1198. or others,

  1199. and they never felt

  1200. they were good enough.

  1201. And no matter

  1202. how successful

  1203. they were,

  1204. and they tried

  1205. really hard

  1206. to be successful

  1207. and to please,

  1208. they always felt

  1209. like a failure.

  1210. And they lived

  1211. with this resentment

  1212. inside of them.

  1213. And they often tried

  1214. to avoid their dad

  1215. because he always

  1216. made them feel

  1217. like a failure.

  1218. Until the penny

  1219. dropped for them,

  1220. that Jesus

  1221. didn't just die

1222. to send you to heaven.

  1223. Jesus died

  1224. to take their shame,

  1225. to take their guilt,

  1226. to even take

  1227. that sense of failure.

  1228. God was pleased

  1229. through what Christ

  1230. has done,

  1231. not through their performance,

  1232. but totally independent

  1233. of their dad's approval.

  1234. They had a status.

  1235. They had a place

  1236. of freedom.

  1237. They had a place

  1238. where they were worthy.

  1239. They were no longer

  1240. slaves to his expectations.

1241. And that set them free.

1242. I think many of us

  1243. still live

  1244. in places

  1245. where maybe

  1246. from our past,

  1247. maybe from things

  1248. that people have said

  1249. to us,

  1250. we're in bondage.

  1251. And the gospel

  1252. kind of stays up

  1253. here in our heads,

1254. but it's not sunk down

  1255. into our hearts

  1256. in these areas.

  1257. And what it did

  1258. for this person,

  1259. it set them free

  1260. to draw healthy boundaries

1261. and to actually say no

  1262. to their dad

  1263. when they had to.

  1264. It set them free

  1265. to apologize

  1266. to their dad

  1267. for resentment.

  1268. It set them free

  1269. to pity him

  1270. and to seek

  1271. how to love him

  1272. rather than

  1273. how to avoid him.

  1274. And every time

  1275. when there used

  1276. to be constant stress

  1277. before he rang

  1278. and they're going,

1279. what does he want now?

  1280. Then they had

  1281. this peaceful rest

  1282. because they knew

  1283. my heavenly father,

  1284. my heavenly father,

  1285. his opinion

  1286. counts most.

  1287. You see,

  1288. make God your treasure

1289. and he gives you value.

  1290. You find a place

  1291. of freedom.

  1292. You find a place

  1293. of rest.

  1294. Look anywhere else,

  1295. anywhere else,

  1296. and you will find

  1297. yourself enslaved,

  1298. constantly chasing,

  1299. neglecting the people

  1300. who really matter.

1301. Christ came to set us free.

  1302. That's not just a one-off

  1303. thing in the past.

  1304. That's for us today,

  1305. every day.
