  1. Would you please turn with me in the Word of God to Mark 6, the Gospel of Mark, Chapter 6.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  2. As we do so, let us pray and call on the Lord for illumination.

  3. O Lord, our God, we are so thankful that you have given us your Word, that you have not

  4. left us dependent upon the imaginations of our minds, the idols of our hearts, but that

  5. you have revealed yourself to us, that you have spoken clearly and beautifully of hope

  6. for sinners, of confidence in you.

  7. We pray that the Spirit will now open our hearts and our ears so that we may hear and receive

  8. your words, the words of your law and your Gospel, even as you have promised.

  9. We ask all this, gracious Father, in the name of Jesus.

  10. Amen.

  11. Mark, Chapter 6.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  12. Our verse tonight is particularly verse 50.

  13. Take heart or take courage.

  14. It is I.

  15. Do not be afraid.

  16. But we'll pick up the story at verse 30 and read down to verse 52.

  17. So Mark 6, verse 30.

    Mark 6:30

  18. Let us hear God's own Word.

  19. The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught.

  20. And he said to them, come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.

  21. For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.

  22. And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.

  23. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns

  24. and got there ahead of them.

  25. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were

  26. like sheep without a shepherd.

  27. And he began to teach them many things.

  28. And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, this is a desolate place, and

  29. the hour is now late.

  30. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to

  31. eat.

  32. But he answered them, you give them something to eat.

  33. And they said to him, shall we go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread and give it to them to

  34. eat?

  35. And he said to them, how many loaves do you have?

  36. Go and see.

  37. And when they had found out, they said, five and two fish.

  38. Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass.

  39. So they sat down in groups by hundreds and by fifties.

  40. And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing

  41. and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people.

  42. And he divided the two fish among them all, and they all ate and were satisfied.

  43. And they took up 12 baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish, and those who ate the

  44. loaves were 5,000 men.

  45. Immediately, he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side,

  46. to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.

  47. And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.

  48. And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.

  49. And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them.

  50. And about the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking on the sea.

  51. He meant to pass by them.

  52. But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out,

  53. for they all saw him and were terrified.

  54. But immediately he spoke to them and said, Take heart.

  55. It is I.

  56. Do not be afraid.

  57. And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased.

  58. And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

  59. So far, the reading of God's word.

  60. It seems to me that from reports in the media, from world events, geopolitics, things unfolding all around us,

  61. many people today are afraid.

  62. I think we live in an age of fear and of growing alarm.

  63. We're certainly concerned with the destruction of war,

  64. great hardships that have come already from that and that seem likely to come.

  65. We face difficulties on the economic front.

  66. We look around and see what seems to be a radical revolution in the culture's understanding of seemingly everything under the sun.

  67. And I think many of us are anxious about the world in which our children or our grandchildren are growing up.

  68. The world, if you're younger, the world in which you're coming of age that seems so unstable in our time.

  69. I think our instincts are either to be fearful or angry or proud,

  70. to think that in our time of crisis,

  71. we need somehow to redouble our efforts to create stability for ourselves,

  72. to build the right kind of relationship,

  73. to find the right solution to world politics that will work,

  74. to have sufficient resources,

  75. to fund our pensions,

  76. things that are good and worth pursuing but are not ultimate.

  77. But it seems that it is a moment of great instability.

  78. For many people, this has been and continues to be a time of a great deal of stress and a great deal of distress,

  79. a time of a great many questions.

  80. And when the things that surround us, that we enjoy,

  81. that we so often take for granted,

  82. are removed or threatened or challenged,

  83. it seems that we often fall prey to that great temptation

  84. to put our confidence in the creation,

  85. in the things that we build and do

  86. to try to find some stability.

  87. But that's why we as Christians are so privileged to know

  88. that our confidence, our foundation,

  89. our security rests not in anything created,

  90. but in the Creator.

  91. Not in our efforts or our policies or our disciplines.

  92. That's part of the wonderful heritage that we have from the Reformation.

  93. Before the Reformation, I think many Christians,

  94. perhaps most Christians,

  95. were dominated by a fearful outlook on the world.

  96. They feared a world full of demons

  97. and all sorts of superstitions.

  98. They sometimes feared the church and its inquisition.

  99. They feared themselves and their own propensity to sin.

  100. And they feared God.

  101. Perhaps not a proper fear of God that drives one to seek mercy,

  102. but because God was most presented only as a righteous judge

  103. who would in any case send them to hell.

  104. So Christianity was often characterized by a fearfulness

  105. that I think was encouraged,

  106. that too much confidence, too much assurance,

  107. too much peace with God will make people indifferent,

  108. will make people sinful.

  109. But when the Reformation came

  110. and when people like Luther and Calvin

  111. began to recover a sense of the power of God's Word,

  112. they were profoundly moved by verses like our text tonight.

  113. The words of Jesus,

  114. Take heart.

  115. Take courage.

  116. It is I.

  117. Don't be afraid.

  118. The message of the Gospel, you see,

  119. the message of our Savior, Jesus Christ,

  120. is indeed good news.

  121. It's good news that is designed to bring peace and hope

  122. and an ultimate heavenly stability into the hearts of his people.

  123. It is the remedy, the antidote to fear.

  124. It is the firm foundation on which we ought to rest as God's people.

  125. And one of the great fruits, it seems to me,

  126. of the Reformation is a confident and courageous kind of Christianity.

  127. Not a kind of Christianity that never faces a fear

  128. or never has a problem or is triumphalist,

  129. but a kind of Christianity that in the face of problems and fears

  130. turns with confidence to God.

  131. And from that confidence in God derives a remarkable level of courage

  132. to face the realities, the difficulties of this life.

  133. So I would like to preach to you tonight about that courage,

  134. that confidence that ought to be ours,

  135. that call of the Savior who says to us,

  136. even now, as he said to his disciples long ago,

  137. take heart.

  138. Take courage.

  139. Be courageous.

  140. Don't be afraid.

  141. Well, how is it that we can be courageous?

  142. From where does that courage come from?

  143. I think in this text,

  144. this text particularly of our Lord coming to his disciples

  145. as they struggle in the sea, in the midst of a storm,

  146. this story illustrates for us in a variety of ways

  147. how we can have courage,

  148. how Christ would have us to take courage.

  149. And the first thing that this story says to us

  150. is that we are to take courage from his presence.

  151. From his glorious presence.

  152. We see this story.

  153. It's a rather touching story in many ways.

  154. The apostles have been preaching.

  155. They come back exhausted,

  156. yet the needs of ministry continue.

  157. Jesus and the disciples are surrounded by needy people.

  158. They don't even have time to eat.

  159. Jesus says,

  160. we'd better get away so we can have some quiet for rest.

  161. They get in a boat thinking they can head off from the crowd,

  162. but the crowd filled with great need is so determined

  163. that they run ahead and gather others

  164. so that when the boat lands,

  165. there's a larger crowd there waiting.

  166. And Jesus ministers to them.

  167. Perhaps you notice that the first great act of his ministry to them,

  168. as we read it in verse 34,

  169. is he began to teach them many things.

  170. We must never disparage the critical nature

  171. of the church's teaching ministry to those in need.

  172. I think that there's nothing more foundational

  173. that we need to live the Christian life than the truth.

  174. And Jesus, in his exhaustion

  175. and in the exhaustion of his disciples,

  176. continues to teach.

  177. And then seeing the hunger,

  178. he feeds them,

  179. and a vast number, over 5,000 are there,

  180. and then still concerned about the disciples.

  181. Jesus sends them on alone,

  182. thinking apparently that the crowd won't follow

  183. if he stays there with the crowd for a while,

  184. and the disciples are sent on.

  185. But then the disciples find themselves

  186. caught on the sea in difficulty.

  187. And Jesus comes to them walking on the water,

  188. a most remarkable event in and of itself.

  189. We might be tempted to say,

  190. well, isn't that the glory of his presence,

  191. this display of his miraculous power,

  192. the amazing ability of our Lord

  193. to do what no human being could do on his own,

  194. to walk upon water,

  195. to walk upon stormy water,

  196. and come to the disciples.

  197. But I think when we look a little closer at the text,

  198. the revelation of the glorious presence of Christ

  199. is much more profound than just that miracle,

  200. as important and significant as it is in itself.

  201. But there are other things in the passage

  202. that point to the glorious character,

  203. the presence of God,

  204. of the presence of Jesus with his disciples.

  205. The first of these we see there in verse 48.

  206. He saw the disciples straining at the oars

  207. because the wind was against them.

  208. About the fourth watch of the night,

  209. he came to them walking on the sea.

  210. He was about to pass by them.

  211. He was about to pass by them.

  212. Why about to pass by them?

  213. Isn't that sort of a waste of time and energy?

  214. If he's just going to walk on by,

  215. why walk out in the first place?

  216. If we compare the word here to walk by

  217. with what we find in the Old Testament,

  218. we see that the same verb is used

  219. in the Greek version of the Old Testament

  220. to describe when Moses had asked to see God's glory.

  221. And God, as it is recorded for us in Exodus 33,

  222. had taken Moses and hidden him in the cleft of the rock

  223. and said,

  224. I will pass by.

  225. I will accommodate myself to your weakness.

  226. And as I do so,

  227. you will see the glory that I show you,

  228. which is my goodness.

  229. My goodness.

  230. You will find good news as I pass by.

  231. You will find the gospel as I pass by.

  232. That's the glory that I will show to you.

  233. And that seems to be what's on Mark's mind

  234. as he records this story

  235. and its meaning for us here in this text.

  236. How is the glory of Christ revealed?

  237. It's revealed not only in the fact

  238. that he can walk along the sea,

  239. but also that he is walking past them.

  240. He's taking the role of Yahweh himself

  241. and the revelation of his glory.

  242. And he is saying to them,

  243. I am your God come in the flesh to be with you.

  244. I am not just a wonder worker who can walk on the sea,

  245. but I am God himself who comes to you and for you.

  246. And I am here with you even now.

  247. I am that cleft in the rock.

  248. And I will hide you in my protection.

  249. My presence will give you the true stability

  250. that you're looking for.

  251. But as so often in the gospel account

  252. and from this fact,

  253. I suppose we should take a lot of encouragement.

  254. The disciples are so often wrong.

  255. They so often miss the point.

  256. It shows the great patience of our God.

  257. And the patience of our God

  258. is something that we should be reassured about often

  259. because we are so often wrong.

  260. They completely miss the point.

  261. They don't see the glory.

  262. They don't anticipate that this Jesus,

  263. whom they've seen multiply five loaves and two fish

  264. to feed over 5,000 people,

  265. they're surprised that he is glorious in this way.

  266. And so they completely mistake what was happening.

  267. Verse 49,

  268. when they saw him walking on the sea,

  269. they thought it was a ghost.

  270. Isn't that pathetic?

  271. They're still caught up in all kinds of superstitions.

  272. They can't believe their own eyes.

  273. Rather than believe that Jesus is the glorious God

  274. come to be with them and to help them

  275. and to reveal himself to them,

  276. they take refuge in some kind of superstition

  277. about ghosts on the water.

  278. And they cry out and are terrified.

  279. So not only does the Savior perform this miracle

  280. of walking on the water,

  281. not only does he seek to reveal his own glory

  282. as he would pass them by,

  283. but then he speaks to them.

  284. And here too we see something

  285. of the glory of his presence.

  286. He not only says take heart

  287. or take courage

  288. and don't be afraid,

  289. but also we read here that he says,

  290. it is I.

  291. It is I.

  292. Now that's not a bad translation

  293. of what we read in the Greek,

  294. but it misses the force

  295. of what Mark has intended for us to hear

  296. in the words of the Savior

  297. because the text literally says,

  298. take heart,

  299. I am,

  300. don't be afraid.

  301. I am.

  302. Here again you see the Savior

  303. is identifying himself

  304. with the great Old Testament God,

  305. Yahweh,

  306. who revealed himself

  307. as the great I am

  308. whose very name Yahweh

  309. is rooted in the very notion of being.

  310. Jesus is saying to them,

  311. like I told Moses long ago,

  312. I am.

  313. Or as we find him saying

  314. in the Gospel of John,

  315. before Abraham was,

  316. I am.

  317. This is a claim of divinity.

  318. No Jew would have missed it.

  319. Mark doesn't want us to miss it.

  320. This is part of the glorious presence

  321. of the Savior.

  322. We are to know

  323. that Savior is indeed true man,

  324. but here the point of this text

  325. is that he is true God,

  326. come in the flesh

  327. to be with his people,

  328. to be present with them,

  329. to show his glory,

  330. that we might be encouraged,

  331. that we might be confident,

  332. that when we face distress,

  333. we can know that the great I am,

  334. the eternal almighty God,

  335. who made all that there is,

  336. is with us in the face of Jesus Christ,

  337. and that the Savior will come to us

  338. and will help us.

  339. And that's the second point of this text,

  340. I think.

  341. It's not only his presence,

  342. the glorious presence of the Savior

  343. that's revealed,

  344. but also his power that is revealed

  345. to encourage us here.

  346. His power is displayed here

  347. for a gracious purpose,

  348. to help and to save.

  349. He saves them, doesn't he?

  350. They're straining at the oars.

  351. They were not sure

  352. they could reach the shore

  353. because the wind was against them.

  354. Caught in a storm,

  355. they are afraid,

  356. and Jesus comes to them

  357. and speaks a word,

  358. and the storm is calm.

  359. Here is power,

  360. power for a gracious purpose,

  361. to save, to provide.

  362. Once again,

  363. the disciples live up

  364. to their total inability

  365. to grasp what is going on,

  366. verse 51 and 52.

  367. They were utterly astounded.

  368. They are completely amazed

  369. because they had not understood

  370. about the loaves,

  371. but their hearts were hardened.

  372. It's as if Mark is saying,

  373. why should they have been so amazed?

  374. But the reason they are so amazed

  375. at the miracle

  376. of the calming of the storm

  377. is because they had never understood

  378. the miracle of the feeding

  379. of the 5,000.

  380. That's to say,

  381. they had never seen

  382. in Jesus Christ

  383. what they ought to have seen,

  384. what was clearly revealed to them

  385. by these actions.

  386. Look at verse 34

  387. of Mark chapter 6.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  388. When he, Jesus,

  389. went ashore,

  390. he saw a great crowd

  391. and he had compassion on them

  392. because they were like sheep

  393. without a shepherd.

  394. He had compassion on them

  395. because he was the good shepherd.

  396. His heart was filled with love

  397. for his people

  398. because he was fulfilling the duty

  399. and the privilege

  400. that the Father had given him

  401. and that he had freely undertaken,

  402. that he had come to be

  403. that good shepherd.

  404. That savior of his people.

  405. The provider for those in need.

  406. The one who would exercise

  407. gracious power for them.

  408. He had shown that

  409. by taking time to teach them.

  410. And he had shown that

  411. by providing bread and fish

  412. to nourish them.

  413. But they didn't get it.

  414. Why didn't they get it?

  415. They didn't get it

  416. because for them

  417. it was all about themselves.

  418. It was all about

  419. what they could get

  420. out of Christ.

  421. When they had rushed ahead

  422. to get ahead of Jesus

  423. in the boat

  424. before the feeding

  425. of the 5,000,

  426. why had they rushed?

  427. Was it because

  428. they were so devoted

  429. to the Savior?

  430. Was it because

  431. they were so eager

  432. to be with him,

  433. to have fellowship

  434. with him?

  435. Was it because

  436. they had sensed

  437. his glorious presence

  438. and his gracious power?

  439. No, they had rushed ahead

  440. so that they could get healed.

  441. So that they could get

  442. what they wanted.

  443. When they were hungry

  444. and he fed them,

  445. they didn't think about him

  446. but only about themselves

  447. and what they required.

  448. So too,

  449. when the crowd,

  450. when he comes,

  451. when Christ comes

  452. and he saves the disciples

  453. as they're caught

  454. in the storm,

  455. do they think about him

  456. and who he is?

  457. No, they don't get it.

  458. They don't get

  459. that this gracious power

  460. is revealing to them

  461. a Savior

  462. and a provider

  463. beyond what they

  464. could have hoped.

  465. One who will never

  466. let them go.

  467. Who will never

  468. abandon them.

  469. Who will provide

  470. for them

  471. all that they need

  472. so that they can

  473. take courage

  474. and not be afraid.

  475. So that,

  476. as things so often

  477. seem,

  478. as the world

  479. crumbles around them,

  480. they can be sure

  481. of the permanence,

  482. of the reliability,

  483. of the stability

  484. that they have

  485. and the Savior,

  486. the great I am

  487. in Christ,

  488. that God's ultimate

  489. verdict is sure

  490. that nothing

  491. can thwart

  492. his purposes.

  493. You see,

  494. the disciples here

  495. as they so often

  496. do are trying

  497. to fit God

  498. into their story.

  499. They're always asking

  500. the question,

  501. how does God

  502. apply to my life?

  503. How does God

  504. fit into what I

  505. want to do?

  506. How does God

  507. meet my needs?

  508. That's not the first

  509. question I think

  510. God would have us

  511. to ask,

  512. is it?

  513. Our question

  514. ought to be,

  515. how has God

  516. brought me

  517. into his story?

  518. How have I been

  519. brought into the

  520. great history

  521. of redemption?

  522. Which goes back

  523. to Israel

  524. in the Old Testament,

  525. back to Abraham

  526. and the patriarchs,

  527. back to the promise

  528. in the garden,

  529. back to the eternal

  530. plan of the Father

  531. and the Son

  532. with the Spirit

  533. that Christ

  534. should be given

  535. a people

  536. that he will save

  537. and redeem,

  538. a kingdom

  539. that has no end?

  540. You see,

  541. when we first know

  542. the character

  543. of our Savior,

  544. when we see

  545. how the Lord

  546. reveals his compassion

  547. and his love,

  548. his care

  549. and provision

  550. for us,

  551. it must melt

  552. our hearts

  553. if we are

  554. his people.

  555. It must enable

  556. us to say,

  557. whatever distress

  558. I face,

  559. whatever difficulty

  560. I know,

  561. I can take courage

  562. because I have

  563. such a Savior.

  564. And the Scriptures

  565. invite us to have

  566. that kind of courage

  567. even when Jesus

  568. does not come

  569. immediately

  570. to remove

  571. our distress

  572. as we would wish.

  573. think of these

  574. words in Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:32

  575. chapter 10

  576. verse 32

  577. where the author

  578. of the epistle

  579. to the Hebrews

  580. is trying to

  581. stir up in the people

  582. the kind of devotion

  583. and confidence

  584. that they have once had.

  585. Hebrews 10

  586. 32

  587. we read,

  588. Remember those

  589. earlier days

  590. when you had

  591. received the light

  592. and stood your ground

  593. in a great contest

  594. in the face

  595. of suffering?

  596. Sometimes you were

  597. publicly exposed

  598. to insult

  599. and persecution.

  600. At other times

  601. you stood side

  602. by side

  603. with those

  604. who were so treated.

  605. You sympathized

  606. with those in prison

  607. and joyfully accepted

  608. the confiscation

  609. of your property

  610. because you knew

  611. that you yourselves

  612. had better

  613. and lasting possessions.

  614. So do not

  615. throw away

  616. your confidence.

  617. It will be

  618. richly rewarded.

  619. You need to persevere

  620. so that when you

  621. have done the will

  622. of God

  623. you will receive

  624. what he has promised.

  625. For in just

  626. a very little while

  627. he who is coming

  628. will come

  629. and will not delay.

  630. But my righteous

  631. one will live

  632. by faith

  633. and if he shrinks

  634. back

  635. I will not be

  636. pleased with him.

  637. You see

  638. these were

  639. suffering people

  640. and they were

  641. prone sometimes

  642. to wonder

  643. where is God?

  644. Where is the promise

  645. of his coming?

  646. Where is the help

  647. that I need?

  648. And Hebrews

  649. says even

  650. when that help

  651. does not come

  652. as quickly

  653. as we would wish

  654. as we would

  655. like it to see

  656. as we would

  657. like to see it

  658. we're told

  659. do not throw

  660. away your confidence

  661. for in just

  662. a very little

  663. while

  664. he who is coming

  665. will come

  666. and will not

  667. delay.

  668. That's the promise.

  669. That's the promise

  670. that he's not

  671. far away

  672. that he is not

  673. late in coming

  674. that he knows

  675. our need

  676. and will use

  677. his gracious

  678. power to give

  679. us what we need

  680. to sustain us

  681. therefore take

  682. heart

  683. be courageous

  684. don't be afraid.

  685. Our courage

  686. comes not only

  687. from his presence

  688. and from his power

  689. but also from

  690. the prayer

  691. of the Savior.

  692. we need always

  693. to remember

  694. that Jesus

  695. was a man

  696. of prayer.

  697. He was a man

  698. of prayer

  699. not only

  700. to model

  701. for us

  702. the centrality

  703. of prayer

  704. the importance

  705. of prayer

  706. in the Christian

  707. life

  708. but also

  709. and above all

  710. because he was

  711. in constant

  712. fellowship

  713. and communication

  714. with the Father.

  715. So we read

  716. in verse 46

  717. of Mark

    Mark 6:46

  718. chapter 6

  719. verse 46

  720. after he had

  721. taken leave

  722. of them

  723. that is the

  724. crowd

  725. to whom he

  726. had been

  727. ministering

  728. he went up

  729. on the mountain

  730. to pray

  731. and when evening

  732. came

  733. the boat

  734. was out

  735. on the sea

  736. and he was

  737. alone

  738. on the land

  739. and he saw

  740. that they were

  741. making headway

  742. painfully

  743. straining

  744. against the oars

  745. for the wind

  746. was against them.

  747. Now

  748. did he see

  749. them in his

  750. prayers?

  751. Did he finish

  752. his prayers

  753. and then see

  754. them?

  755. I think the

  756. text is unclear

  757. but it does

  758. want to relate

  759. very carefully

  760. and very closely

  761. the prayers

  762. of the Savior

  763. to his seeing

  764. the needs

  765. of his people.

  766. And we need

  767. to remember

  768. that that is

  769. still true

  770. of the Savior

  771. today.

  772. His priestly

  773. work you'll

  774. remember is

  775. twofold.

  776. First to offer

  777. himself as the

  778. sacrifice for sin.

  779. That's the first

  780. great work of a

  781. priest to offer

  782. sacrifice.

  783. But the second

  784. work continues

  785. even to this

  786. day.

  787. The work of

  788. prayer.

  789. The priest

  790. first of all

  791. offers sacrifice

  792. for the people

  793. and then he

  794. intercedes for

  795. them.

  796. He prays for

  797. them.

  798. And the

  799. scripture tells

  800. us over and

  801. over again

  802. that Jesus

  803. Christ is

  804. still praying

  805. for us.

  806. That he still

  807. knows our

  808. need.

  809. That he still

  810. sees us in

  811. our difficulty.

  812. and he

  813. prays to the

  814. father for

  815. us that we

  816. would be

  817. guarded and

  818. protected.

  819. The Savior

  820. knows our

  821. weaknesses.

  822. He knows our

  823. doubts.

  824. He knows our

  825. difficulties.

  826. He knows even

  827. our times of

  828. indifference to

  829. the things of

  830. God.

  831. But he tells

  832. us, doesn't

  833. he, draw near

  834. for I am with

  835. you and you

  836. will receive

  837. mercy and

  838. grace to

  839. help in

  840. times of

  841. need.

  842. Again we

  843. read in

  844. Hebrews 6

  845. and 7 that

  846. Jesus is our

  847. priest forever.

  848. That he

  849. always lives to

  850. make intercession

  851. for his

  852. people.

  853. And he

  854. says to us,

  855. I have come

  856. to you that

  857. you might flee

  858. to me for

  859. refuge, that

  860. you might have

  861. strong encouragement

  862. to hold fast to

  863. the hope set

  864. before you, the

  865. sure and

  866. steadfast anchor

  867. of your soul.

  868. And that's a

  869. critical part of

  870. the work of our

  871. Savior.

  872. That he is

  873. always caring

  874. for us, that

  875. he is always

  876. guarding us, that

  877. he is always

  878. providing for us

  879. all that we

  880. need.

  881. Let us remember

  882. loved ones that

  883. we have such a

  884. Savior, that we

  885. have such a

  886. mediator who

  887. cares for us, who

  888. never forgets us.

  889. You see that's

  890. the reality that

  891. so moved our

  892. forebears in the

  893. faith with

  894. confidence in

  895. God.

  896. Perhaps some of

  897. you have heard

  898. one of the great

  899. 16th century

  900. Reformation quotes

  901. from a Spanish

  902. soldier who

  903. said he would

  904. rather face a

  905. whole army than

  906. one Calvinist

  907. committed to

  908. doing the will

  909. of God.

  910. That's a

  911. motivating confidence

  912. in God.

  913. It says, my

  914. God is with me

  915. in his presence,

  916. in his power,

  917. in his prayers,

  918. and in a world

  919. of difficulty and

  920. discouragement,

  921. of conflict and

  922. war, of political

  923. soundbites, of

  924. forces that would

  925. compete for our

  926. attention endlessly,

  927. that would jostle us

  928. like boats in a

  929. storm.

  930. We need to be

  931. reminded that in

  932. our Savior, Jesus

  933. Christ, we receive a

  934. kingdom that cannot be

  935. shaken, and that we

  936. have even now a

  937. foretaste of all that

  938. we will have fully on

  939. the last day.

  940. I was reminded of

  941. that this morning.

  942. That's why we come

  943. to church, isn't it?

  944. So that we can hear

  945. again and again,

  946. because we forget,

  947. we doubt, we're not

  948. always convinced it's

  949. true.

  950. We need to be reminded

  951. that God has made real

  952. promises to us with

  953. real words.

  954. We can see, as we did

  955. this morning, twice,

  956. real water to seal

  957. that promise to us

  958. in baptism, real bread

  959. and wine to nourish

  960. us in the supper.

  961. We come so that we

  962. can hear and sing

  963. and pray God's word

  964. together, so that we

  965. might be a people

  966. together that knows

  967. our God and that has

  968. great confidence in

  969. him.

  970. But then we read in

  971. Mark 6 that at the

  972. time, the disciples

  973. were amazed.

  974. They were

  975. astounded.

  976. That is, they were

  977. filled with wonder.

  978. That is, they were

  979. impressed.

  980. Throughout the gospel

  981. accounts, we find people

  982. being impressed.

  983. The trouble with being

  984. impressed is that it's

  985. what happens to those

  986. who go to the circus,

  987. to those who hang out

  988. with celebrities,

  989. politicians who can

  990. promise to do

  991. impressive things.

  992. our Savior does not

  993. want us to be

  994. impressed.

  995. He wants us to

  996. believe.

  997. But what is it to

  998. believe?

  999. It is here revealed to

1000. us that believing is to

  1001. see the glorious

  1002. presence of Christ and

  1003. not be afraid.

1004. To know that he is not

1005. a ghost, but he is

1006. alive and he is with

  1007. us.

1008. It is to have faith,

1009. to know and trust that

  1010. the gracious power of

  1011. our Savior is

  1012. exercised for us.

1013. to know and trust that

  1014. the guarding prayers of

  1015. our mediator surround us

  1016. at all times.

1017. To hear and believe when

  1018. he says to us,

  1019. take heart, take

  1020. courage, be

  1021. courageous, do not be

  1022. afraid.

  1023. What difficulty that we

  1024. face could ever stand

  1025. against our Savior?

1026. May God grant to each

1027. one of us that courage

1028. that we find only in

  1029. Christ.

  1030. Amen.

  1031. Let us pray.

1032. O Lord, our God, we

1033. thank you that we have

  1034. such a Savior.

1035. We pray that again and

1036. again that we might be

  1037. renewed in our

  1038. believing.

1039. We confess it is so easy

1040. for us, O Lord, to be

  1041. overwhelmed by the things

  1042. of this world.

  1043. By very real and

  1044. legitimate fears and

  1045. struggles and to take

1046. our eyes off of the

1047. Savior so that we do

  1048. not hear his gracious

  1049. word.

1050. But, O Lord, we ask

1051. that word would ring in

  1052. our hearts and minds

1053. that he is and that he

1054. is for us who are his

  1055. people.

1056. He is the mighty one

  1057. whose kingdom cannot be

  1058. toppled.

1059. By your spirit, we ask

1060. that we may embrace and

  1061. hold fast to that

  1062. blessed hope of eternal

  1063. life which you have

  1064. given us in Christ.

1065. We pray that you would

1066. fill us with that faith,

1067. O Lord, and from that

1068. faith let courage flow as

  1069. we live for you.

1070. Hear us, for we pray all

1071. of this in Christ's name.

  1072. Amen.

  1073. Amen.

1074. Would you please stand with

1075. me as we sing together our

  1076. final psalm, Psalm 121.

  1077. Amen.

  1078. Amen.

  1079. Amen.

  1080. Amen.

  1081. Amen.

  1082. Amen.

  1083. Amen.

  1084. Amen.

  1085. Amen.

  1086. Amen.

  1087. Amen.

  1088. Amen.

  1089. Amen.

  1090. Amen.
