  1. So let's turn together now back to Matthew 25 and let's read this central parable and think

  2. about that parable but the the wider teaching of Matthew 25 together. Again the kingdom of heaven

  3. will be like a man going on a journey who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them.

  4. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags and to another one bag, each according to

  5. his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who received five bags of gold went at once and put

  6. his money to work and gained five bags more. So also the one with two bags of gold gained two more

  7. but the man who'd received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.

  8. After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.

  9. The man who'd received five bags of gold brought the other five. Master he said you entrusted me

  10. with five bags of gold, see I have gained five more. His master replied well done good and

  11. faithful servant. You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things.

  12. Come and share your master's happiness. The man with two bags of gold also came. Master he said

  13. you entrusted me with two bags of gold, see I have gained two more. His master replied well done good

  14. and faithful servant. You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things.

  15. Come and share your master's happiness. Then the man who'd received one bag of gold came.

  16. Master he said I knew that you are a hard man. Harvesting where you have not sown and gathering

  17. where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground.

  18. See here is what belongs to you. His master replied you wicked lazy servant. So you knew that I harvest

  19. what I have not sown and gather what I have not scattered seed. Well then you should have put my

  20. money on deposit with the bankers so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

  21. So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. For whoever has will be

  22. given more and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have even what they have will be taken from

  23. them. And throw that worthless servant outside into the darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing

  24. of teeth. Amen. So here we are the parable that's often known as the parable of the talents.

  25. And perhaps as we come to this we can come with a question. How does Christian hope

  26. transform everyday life? I want to begin with a truth that the Christian church has what the world is

  27. looking for. I came across recently a study done crossing 28 different countries asking the question

  28. what worries the world? And the top answers is from August of last year. Now perhaps unsurprisingly

  29. COVID-19 topped the list. Now but there was also unemployment, poverty, corruption and crime.

  30. And to ask that question and to reflect on the answers it perhaps reveals that for many

  31. looking at the world today there is a sense of anxiety. The question where is the world heading? It all

  32. looks chaotic.

  33. But what does Jesus say? What does the Bible say? About where the world is heading? It's very clear that

  34. the world is not heading for chaos. It's not heading for destruction. The world and history is heading

  35. for the return of Christ Jesus the King. It's heading for the renewal of all things in and under Christ.

  36. There are many people in our world who are asking the question how can I find hope?

  37. It's the cry of the lonely and the suffering. The anxious. Perhaps it's the question that everybody

  38. asks as they take a look around and wonder what's going on. And again what does our Bible tell us about

  39. hope? What does Matthew's gospel tell us about hope? Here is Jesus speaking about the end of times and his

  40. return. And how does Matthew's gospel give us hope? Well after this, straight after this, chapters 26 to 28,

  41. we find a focus moving towards the suffering and death of Jesus and the resurrection. And that's where

  42. hope is centered because there at the cross and in the rejection, the betrayal, we see sin and evil and

  43. darkness doing its worst against the king who is altogether good. But in the resurrection, we find

  44. Jesus has defeated the darkness. Jesus is victorious over the devil and sin and death. He is the point of

  45. hope. There is hope at what we could call the midpoint of history. It's Jesus and his resurrection. And that

  46. true is the hope for the end point of history. Our hope is Jesus and the return of Christ the king. What he

  47. has started, the cross and the resurrection, he will finish. Sin, suffering, death will be defeated and

  48. destroyed. Once and for all, the world will be made new. God's people will enjoy life on this earth for all

  49. eternity with a perfect savior. Jesus is our hope. But the question for today, and I think it's a question

  50. we find in Matthew 25, is this. What difference does Christian hope make for everyday life?

  51. What difference does the return of Christ make to my tomorrow? To how I live in my family, how I go to my

  52. job? How does it shape my present living? So Matthew 25, Matthew 24 as well, Jesus teaches on the end times

  53. and on his return. And as I said, we're going to focus on the central parable in Matthew 25, but we're

  54. going to survey the key themes in all three. And here's what I want us to see. It's this. It's because

  55. Christ is coming back. His servants, that's how the people of God are described, how we're called to

  56. be servants. His servants should live with watchfulness, holiness, and faithfulness.

  57. It's a very appropriate message for today, for new office bearers. We want our office bearers,

  58. new or old, to be watchful, holy, and faithful. But that's a reality that should categorize all of

  59. God's people, all of God's servants. So let's begin, first of all, by looking at our parable,

  60. recognizing that the kingdom of heaven brings both privilege and responsibility. So our story

  61. divides itself, I think, neatly into three different scenes. Again, this is one of these parables Jesus

  62. tells, giving us a picture of the kingdom of heaven. The first scene, verses 14 and 15, we find some money

  63. being distributed. Jesus tells the story of a master who's departing on a journey, and we discover that

  64. the return of the master is an uncertain time. We don't know when that's going to happen. Verse 19,

  65. we're told it comes after a long time. So he's going on a journey, and as he does, he entrusts his

  66. property to servants. The NIV talks about bags of gold. So one of the confusing things about older

  67. translations, they talked about talents, which maybe sounds like abilities, but actually it was a weight

  68. of money, a weight of metal. So we can think about gold bags. Each bag, the experts tell us, would be

  69. worth about 20 years of wages. And those bags are distributed, verse 15, each according to his

  70. ability. So in verse 14 and 15, we discover two things. We discover that he's a master, and that

  71. master has absolute authority over his possessions and over his servants. And we discover servants,

  72. and they have an obligation of duty, an obligation to work for and to serve their master.

  73. So that's the first scene. Second scene, verses 16 to 18, we discover the servants' actions. The

  74. actions of three of those servants, two of them, we're told, verse 16, went at once. The good

  75. servants put the master's money to work and gain more. So two, take positive action.

  76. One, he digs a hole and hides the money in there. So remember, if you were here a few weeks ago,

  77. we looked at a parable where it could be common in times of war or for security to dig a hole and

  78. to put money there. But the problem is, and it becomes clear from the master's words, that he knows

  79. this isn't the right thing to do. This is a refusal to do any work. This is disobedience on behalf of this

  80. servant. So those are the actions. Two, put the money to work. One, digs a hole. And then verse

  81. 19 to 13, to 30 rather, is the day of reckoning. It's the settling of the accounts. And we're told

  82. that this takes place after a long time. And so there's certain glimpses that we get reminding us

  83. that within this parable, Jesus is teaching us about the theme. The theme is his return.

  84. So Jesus has said in Matthew 24, verse 36, about the day or hour of his return, no one knows,

    Matthew 24:36

  85. not even the angels in heaven, nor the sun, but only the father. So it's an unknown time of return

  86. when Jesus will come back. But when this master who represents Jesus comes back,

  87. he invites the servants to come. In verse 20, we can read,

  88. the man who's received five bags of gold, brought the other five. Master, he said,

  89. you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more. And then the one with two

  90. does exactly the same thing. And both of them receive the same positive verdict. Well done,

  91. good and faithful servant. That because they have shown themselves faithful with a few things,

  92. there is this positive promise. Both that they will receive more responsibility,

  93. but also there is this invitation to joy. Come and share your master's happiness. And again,

  94. this is one of those moments where it takes us beyond the parable to thinking about the return

  95. of Christ and the reality that will be true for his people sharing in the happiness, the eternal

  96. happiness of Jesus. So this parable has this wonderful kingdom come theme where Jesus is saying,

  97. faithful with a few, faithful in serving. Now you can look forward to a wonderful reward

  98. when Jesus returns. Glorious work and glorious joy in the new heavens and the new earth for those who are

  99. good and faithful. But of course there's the third servant, isn't there? That third servant who had

  100. hard words to say about his master. I knew that you were a hard man. And so he overlooked his responsibility.

  101. He actually misrepresents his master. He refuses to obey. He lacks love. He is unwilling to serve.

  102. And so the master condemns this man. Verse 26, you wicked, lazy servant.

  103. The master says, your own words condemn you. If you think I'm a hard man looking for things that I haven't

  104. worked for, then why didn't you put my money to work in the bank? And there is a negative promise.

  105. Verse 28, take the bag of gold from him. Verse 30, throw that worthless servant outside.

  106. And again, even in this final moment of judgment, there's a reminder that this is about more than

  107. just a story. This is about the return of Jesus the judge because of the language. Throw that worthless

  108. servant outside into the darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  109. darkness and misery, pictures of eternal judgment in hell for those who refuse and reject the master.

  110. Those who receive this verdict of worthless. And we have this solemn reminder from Jesus that to

  111. dishonor this master, to disobey this master is to have no place in his joy, but rather to know

  112. eternal misery. The kingdom of heaven brings privilege and responsibility as we see from this parable.

  113. Now I imagine there's elements of this story that we have seen. Possibly we've seen it in our office or

  114. workplace. Possibly we've seen it in our classroom. The boss or the teacher isn't around. They have to go

  115. away for a while and then they don't come back for a little while. Perhaps the boss is away for a meeting

  116. all afternoon. And what happens in those situations is sometimes you'll find that people will divide

  117. into two categories. Some will continue to graft, to try and work hard, to stay on task. But other people

  118. take the opportunity to laze around. Take the opportunity to take advantage of this freedom. Ah,

  119. the person in charge is away. So let's do as we please. And sadly, Jesus' parable reminds us that

  120. we can see the same with regards to Jesus. That while some will be faithful, some will not.

  121. He, Jesus, is the master. He is the one who will depart. And remember, Matthew's going to go

  122. straight from this parable to his going to the cross, rising from the tomb, and then returning

  123. to heaven. So he's going to depart to glory by way of the cross and the resurrection. Jesus is the one

  124. who gives, as it were, these spiritual bags of gold to his people. It is in Jesus that we find new life.

  125. It is in Jesus that we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. It's through trusting in Jesus that we have

  126. the hope of eternal life. It's Jesus by the Spirit who gives spiritual gifts. These are all privileges

  127. that we have in the kingdom of heaven. But Jesus, our master, calls for service.

  128. He gives each one of us, having made us in his image, having made us all unique, gifts, abilities,

  129. and opportunities. And they look very different for each one of us. And in different seasons of life,

  130. they will all be different. But we all have that responsibility, whatever our gifts, abilities,

  131. opportunities, to honor him. To be at work in his kingdom. There's that responsibility within the

  132. kingdom of heaven. And notice, and it's so important for us to notice, how does the master speak? He speaks,

  133. well done, not good and successful servant, well done, good and faithful servant. It's faithfulness

  134. that our master, the Lord Jesus, is looking for in our everyday life.

  135. So Matthew 25 in this parable is reminding us, this master who has departed, who gives gifts,

  136. who expects work, will come back one day. He will return on the day of judgment. And on that day,

  137. he will pass a verdict on all of our lives. And the question we all need to ask ourselves today,

  138. not on that day, not on that day, as today, is what will the verdict be on my life?

  139. What word am I going to hear from Jesus on that day?

  140. Because this parable tells us, in all seriousness, there will be some who will hear worthless.

  141. Why? Because they refuse the call of Jesus, the master.

  142. No faith, no obedience. Wasting of gospel privileges. Heard the gospel, had the chance of fellowship in a church.

  143. You know, we often think about the unreached people groups, hundreds of millions of people,

  144. never heard the name of Jesus. We have.

  145. If we waste those privileges, we will hear worthless.

  146. The verdict, that's not the verdict we want, is it? We want to hear, well done, good and faithful servant.

  147. We want to be those who today and every day choose to honor Jesus as master.

  148. Who live with faithfulness to him and his commands.

  149. Who use what he has given to honor him.

  150. Three actions I think we can all helpfully take.

  151. The first is that we can pray.

  152. Perhaps we need to confess the ways that we've not been faithful.

  153. Perhaps we need to pray that we would endure and persevere in faithfulness.

  154. Perhaps we need to pray to see the opportunities that God gives us to be faithful in his kingdom.

  155. Secondly, we need to encourage one another.

  156. We are called into local churches into fellowship and we need to support and spur one another on to love and good works.

  157. To encourage one another towards this kind of faithfulness.

  158. And three, we are to serve as we are able.

  159. Serve as we are able.

  160. We all have different abilities and different opportunities and those are given to us by God.

  161. And so we shouldn't grumble and we shouldn't be proud and we shouldn't be envious.

  162. Rather, we should look to think and to pray.

  163. How can I be faithful today?

  164. Recognizing the kingdom brings privilege and responsibility.

  165. Well, having thought for a few minutes about this parable in detail, let's scale back.

  166. Let's think wide angle over this whole chapter to recognize that there are three parables here from which we can draw three commands.

  167. But again, just to recognize that as Jesus teaches, Matthew 24, 25, as he knows the cross is coming, he also knows he will rise again.

  168. So he knows he must suffer and die to save sinners.

  169. He knows he must rise again to show his power and victory over sin and death and the devil.

  170. And that's the focus of Matthew 26 to 28.

  171. But he also knows, and it becomes clear from these chapters, that he will return.

  172. He will return as the last stage of the Father's salvation timetable.

  173. And here in Matthew chapter 25, he gives instructions, particular instructions.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  174. Instructions for his servants.

  175. So every Christian is called to be a servant.

  176. Instructions for servant.

  177. And how to live with faith and hope until his return.

  178. So let's look at three emphases we can get from each of these parables.

  179. First, servants of Jesus live with watchfulness.

  180. John Piper, a number of years ago, wrote a really helpful book called Don't Waste Your Life.

  181. It's a really powerful book, actually.

  182. And what prompted that, it was a story he read in a magazine.

  183. It was a story of a retired couple who obviously had made plenty of money during their working careers.

  184. And as they retired, they thought, here's what we'll do.

  185. We'll buy ourselves a fancy yacht and we'll sail around from bay to bay, coast to coast, and we'll collect shells.

  186. And I think it was Time Magazine did an article on this couple.

  187. And John Piper read, and he thought, what a tragedy.

  188. To spend years of your life lazing about collecting shells.

  189. We were made for so much more than that.

  190. We were made for eternal joy.

  191. And we were made with present purpose.

  192. And Matthew 25 gives us our purpose to use our time, to use our talents for our King.

  193. And so that first parable, the parable of these ten virgins, these ten young women, waiting for a bridegroom to begin a wedding feast, really emphasizes watchfulness.

  194. So if you have your Bible, you can turn back to 25, 1 to 13.

  195. What we discover there are two groups of young women.

  196. One group who are wise, one group who are foolish.

  197. What makes the difference is that some are prepared to wait a long time for the bridegroom to come back.

  198. Others are not prepared.

  199. So they have their lamps, they have their lights to welcome.

  200. Some bring extra oil, and some don't.

  201. And what happens at the end of the story?

  202. The cry goes out, here comes the bridegroom.

  203. Get ready.

  204. Only half hour.

  205. So some enter the feast, and some in the end are sent away.

  206. Jesus says to us, to be wise is to be ready for Christ's certain return.

  207. The return is certain.

  208. The timing is not.

  209. So we need to live as people who are watchful.

  210. But I think there's a particular emphasis that we can also take from this, from these two groups side by side, perhaps looking identical,

  211. until the point where we realize some are ready and some are not.

  212. Being around those who are ready to meet with Jesus is not enough.

  213. Being around those who have faith in the Lord Jesus, who have trusted him personally, is not enough.

  214. Faith cannot be shared.

  215. Holiness cannot be shared.

  216. Personal commitment is required.

  217. Servants of Jesus live with watchfulness.

  218. The first way to be ready is to be trusting in Jesus.

  219. But again, as we sort of think about our big question, where's the world heading?

  220. This parable reminds us, chaos is not the final destiny.

  221. The return of Christ is the opportunity, the invitation to great joy.

  222. It's where the world is heading.

  223. And so we need to be watchful and not lose sight of that.

  224. Not lose sight of our need to be right with God.

  225. Need to be right with God today.

  226. To not lose sight of what is of first importance.

  227. How easy it is to start collecting shells and not to realize we're wasting our lives.

  228. Not to lose sight of being ready to meet our maker and our master.

  229. To not lose sight of this future award.

  230. This wedding feast is such a powerful image in the Bible.

  231. The Bible speaks of eternal life as being like a wedding feast.

  232. A place of joy that lasts forever.

  233. Where Jesus is the bridegroom and the church, the people who are trusting him, they're like the bride.

  234. And so joy is our future when we are prepared for the return of Jesus by putting our trust in him.

  235. So servants of Jesus live with watchfulness.

  236. Secondly, servants of Jesus live with holiness.

  237. So sometimes we'll see different variations of the fly-on-the-wall documentary.

  238. Now whether that's following a sports team.

  239. Whether that's following a group of children in a classroom.

  240. Whether that's a fly-on-the-wall documentary looking at a particular company.

  241. One of the things that will always reveal is,

  242. how do people act behind closed doors when the boss isn't around?

  243. Does that particular group in focus maintain their values when the person in charge is away?

  244. And that's one of the great emphases of Matthew 25.

  245. Our master Jesus calls us to match his heart and his values.

  246. To live serving him even while he is absent.

  247. And what is Jesus like?

  248. Jesus is holy.

  249. As the eternal son of God, he is without sin.

  250. He is in a different moral category from us.

  251. And as Jesus, the God-man,

  252. he is the one who never sinned.

  253. But always lived to please his father.

  254. Always lived for the glory of his father.

  255. And his people are told,

  256. Be holy because I am holy.

  257. To be holy.

  258. First by trusting in Jesus that he would make us holy.

  259. And then recognizing that united to Jesus.

  260. That Jesus, by his presence and power in us,

  261. transforms us and enables us to be holy,

  262. to love as he loves.

  263. And we can see that in the third parable in Matthew 25.

  264. The parable of the sheep and the goats.

  265. Again, it's a parable of separation, isn't it?

  266. There are the sheep who receive reward,

  267. the goats who receive judgment.

  268. And within this parable,

  269. there's that call to follow the example of Christ.

  270. What do all of these,

  271. when he says,

  272. I was hungry, you gave me something to eat,

  273. I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink,

  274. I was a stranger, I needed clothes,

  275. I was ill, I was in prison.

  276. What are they?

  277. They're examples of self-giving love

  278. for the sake of others.

  279. Sacrificial love,

  280. especially for the weak and the poor.

  281. Who's that a picture of?

  282. Isn't that a picture of the Lord Jesus?

  283. Doesn't that reveal his heart,

  284. his values, his love?

  285. And so Jesus is saying,

  286. when he is absent,

  287. while we wait his return,

  288. servants of Christ are to show a measure of real,

  289. lived out obedience to the will of God

  290. in the way that we love others.

  291. It's a way of showing our practical holiness.

  292. That we would heed that command of Hebrews 12, verse 14,

    Hebrews 12:14

  293. make every effort to live in peace with everyone

  294. and to be holy.

  295. Without holiness,

  296. no one will see the Lord.

  297. So a question for us to ask,

  298. is holiness a priority for me today?

  299. Is that something I take seriously?

  300. Is that something I ever think about?

  301. Am I watchful of my words and actions,

  302. my thoughts and emotions?

  303. Is my life bearing the fruit of love

  304. towards God and to others

  305. because the Holy Lord Jesus has saved me

  306. and is empowering me

  307. and is living within me?

  308. Servants of Jesus live with holiness.

  309. And then to circle back to the central parable,

  310. to recognize that servants of Jesus

  311. live with faithfulness.

  312. So I just finished a missionary biography

  313. of a guy called James O. Fraser,

  314. who's a missionary to the Lizu people in China.

  315. And when he died,

  316. there was sort of reports

  317. from his missionary team

  318. that were recorded in the book.

  319. And what you got a sense was

  320. that they'd lost both a great leader

  321. and a great friend.

  322. They'd lost a role model

  323. and a real source of encouragement.

  324. But there was one missionary

  325. who wrote something that

  326. just really connected

  327. with my thoughts this week

  328. on this passage.

  329. When she said this,

  330. Isabel Kuhn,

  331. you may have heard of her,

  332. she wrote,

  333. it is one thing to be praised

  334. by a person who has no experience

  335. of your task.

  336. It is quite different

  337. to win a well done

  338. from one who is himself

  339. a master

  340. in that very line of things.

  341. They loved

  342. when James O. Fraser said well done

  343. because they knew

  344. that he had lived well

  345. as a missionary.

  346. Now think about

  347. what we just read,

  348. what's central to our parable

  349. is the Christian hope

  350. of hearing

  351. well done,

  352. good and faithful servant.

  353. From who?

  354. From the Lord Jesus

  355. who is the

  356. great

  357. servant.

  358. he was perfectly

  359. faithful to his service.

  360. Always found doing

  361. his father's will.

  362. Always seeking to bring

  363. his father glory

  364. all the way to the cross.

  365. Dying to serve us

  366. by saving us.

  367. And what's Jesus doing now?

  368. Still serving us.

  369. He's still living

  370. to plead our cause.

  371. He's still living

  372. to pray

  373. for his people.

  374. Always.

  375. praise.

  376. The one who says

  377. well done,

  378. good and faithful servant

  379. is the one who served us

  380. so faithfully

  381. and continues to do so.

  382. And what this parable

  383. calls us to do

  384. is to live as faithful

  385. servants in response.

  386. Knowing just how good

  387. and faithful

  388. Jesus has been

  389. to us

  390. and for us.

  391. With hearts

  392. that are full of love

  393. for him

  394. we are called

  395. to be faithful.

  396. The parable reminds us

  397. we'll be held accountable

  398. for what we do

  399. with the message

  400. and how we serve

  401. in the kingdom.

  402. And remember

  403. it's not good

  404. and successful

  405. it's good

  406. and faithful.

  407. Faithfulness is vital.

  408. Faithful in our

  409. everyday obedience.

  410. With that desire

  411. that in the end

  412. we'd hear well done

  413. not worthless.

  414. So the return

  415. of Christ

  416. fuels

  417. Christian hope.

  418. It gives us

  419. that reminder

  420. against the anxiety

  421. that panics

  422. and wonders

  423. where is the world

  424. heading.

  425. We know it's heading

  426. for the return

  427. of Christ.

  428. It speaks

  429. certain hope

  430. against the wistful

  431. thinking

  432. that hopes

  433. are we as people

  434. we can save the world

  435. we can create

  436. some kind of

  437. heaven on earth.

  438. No our hope

  439. is fixed

  440. on the Lord Jesus

  441. a living

  442. returning

  443. saviour.

  444. And because

  445. he is coming back

  446. one day

  447. because he is coming

  448. back

  449. to speak

  450. a word

  451. over us

  452. every day

  453. we are to live

  454. watchful

  455. holy

  456. faithful

  457. lives of service

  458. that we would hear

  459. well done

  460. on that day.

  461. by trusting

  462. him as saviour

  463. and living

  464. for him

  465. as king.

  466. Let's pray

  467. briefly

  468. about that now.

  469. Lord God

  470. once again

  471. we give you

  472. thanks

  473. that Jesus

  474. the master

  475. in this parable

  476. is also

  477. the suffering

  478. servant

  479. the one

  480. who gave

  481. his life

  482. as a ransom

  483. for sinners

  484. the one

  485. who ever

  486. lives

  487. to plead

  488. our cause

  489. to make

  490. intercession

  491. for us

  492. in heaven

  493. and we pray

  494. that you would

  495. help us

  496. to be faithful

  497. that even

  498. as

  499. his return

  500. can sometimes

  501. seem so

  502. distant

  503. in our minds

  504. we pray

  505. that you would

  506. help us

  507. to fix

  508. our hope

  509. fix our eyes

  510. on eternity

  511. so that we would

  512. live with

  513. watchfulness

  514. keep our eyes

  515. on the Lord

  516. Jesus

  517. so that we would

  518. live with

  519. holiness

  520. Lord we pray

  521. that you would

  522. transform

  523. our everyday

  524. reality

  525. as you would

  526. impress

  527. upon our

  528. hearts and

  529. lives

  530. the reality

  531. of the return

  532. of Christ

  533. Lord we pray

  534. that this

  535. message

  536. would be

  537. one that

  538. would be

  539. heard

  540. in our

  541. city today

  542. and heard

  543. in our

  544. nation

  545. today

  546. for those

  547. who feel

  548. hopeless

  549. for those

  550. who are

  551. terribly

  552. anxious

  553. about what's

  554. happening in

  555. the world

  556. today

  557. help them

  558. to see

  559. Jesus

  560. as that

  561. fixed

  562. point

  563. that point

  564. of certain

  565. hope

  566. and may

  567. they entrust

  568. themselves

  569. to him

  570. Lord we pray

  571. in particular

  572. this week

  573. as our

  574. church will

  575. be in

  576. general

  577. assembly

  578. we pray

  579. for ministers

  580. and elders

  581. who will

  582. gather

  583. together

  584. to hear

  585. reports

  586. and to

  587. have

  588. discussions

  589. and to

  590. make

  591. decisions

  592. Lord may

  593. we have

  594. that sense

  595. of

  596. watchfulness

  597. and may

  598. you give

  599. us as a

  600. church

  601. faithfulness

  602. may you

  603. help us

  604. to pursue

  605. holiness

  606. as a

  607. church

  608. in this

  609. nation

  610. as we

  611. seek to

  612. be about

  613. our

  614. master's

  615. business

  616. Lord we

  617. pray that

  618. you would

  619. raise up

  620. more

  621. workers

  622. for

  623. serving

  624. you here

  625. in Scotland

  626. and around

  627. the world

  628. more who

  629. could preach

  630. and teach

  631. more who

  632. could train

  633. and disciple

  634. Lord that

  635. you would

  636. continue

  637. to build

  638. your church

  639. among us

  640. Lord help

  641. us to

  642. continue to

  643. reflect

  644. to allow

  645. your word

  646. to ask

  647. questions

  648. of our

  649. hearts

  650. we pray

  651. and may

  652. you by

  653. your spirit

  654. so work

  655. in all

  656. of us

  657. that we

  658. would be

  659. ready

  660. to meet

  661. with the

  662. Lord Jesus

  663. and that it

  664. would be

  665. your will

  666. that each

  667. one would

  668. hear well

  669. done good

  670. and faithful

  671. servant

  672. as you would

  673. cause us to

  674. turn from sin

  675. and to trust

  676. in Jesus

  677. and we pray

  678. in his name

  679. Amen
